Mr Tisbury says the way will be open then for people who have been exposed to have regular health monitoring, so that any problems that develop can be caught early. A CFA spokesman responded to the Mail’s inquiries with a statement saying the matters were being considered

by the parliamentary inquiry into Fisville which was underway. “CFA welcomes the inquiry and looks forward to making a submission,” he said. The CFA has established a Fiskville Enquiry Hotline on 1800 628 616.

THERE’S no relief for Yarra Ranges MFB firefighter Mick Tisbury in the closure last week of the CFA’s Fiskville training facility. There is, however, some sense of vindication. Mr Tisbury, a firefighter for 27 years and on the executive of the United Firefighters’ Union, has been investigating and pushing for a thorough investigation into the use of toxic materials, and water contamination, at Fiskville for the past three years. It’s been a harrowing experience that started with a media report in 2011 of a suspected cancer cluster in people who had trained at Fiskville. Mr Tisbury said a series of reports and correspondence showed that it was not only people at the higher echelons of the CFA that knew of the health dangers, but in government. The CFA, however, says it has acted on information and reports and has consistently cited reports that indicate that risks identified were “low and acceptable”. CFA Chief Executive Officer, Mick Bourke, is on record as saying: “No stone has been left unturned and no expense spared in ensuring Fiskville is safe.” If anyone is convinced, it’s certainly not Mr Tisbury - or, the Victorian Government. Heads have already rolled with the sacking by the Labor Government of Worksafe Chairman, David Kransnostein, and its CEO, Denise Cosgrove, after they were unable to guarantee the water at Fiskville had been tested. Worksafe had assured the government in December that the site was safe, prompting Premier Daniel Andrews to say he had lost confidence in them. The closure of the training ground, where thousands of MFB firefighters and CFA volunteer and career fight-

ers have done training over several decades, follows the announcement in December of a parliamentary inquiry into Fiskville. Mr Tisbury, who was also an instructor at Fiskville on and off between 2001 and 2012, said he had been stonewalled at every turn in his efforts to get information, and/or action. “For the past three years using freedom of information we’ve gained access to about 180,000 pages of reports and documents,” he said. “What I am reading is horrendous, so you can imagine how bad the redacted comments are.” Mr Tisbury says nobody was listening - and if they were, they weren’t telling anyone, including the firefighters. “I was sick of asking MFB and CFA senior management and the politicians, got nowhere with Worksafe, went to the coroner and police ... the coroner wouldn’t investigate because Worksafe weren’t investigating,” he said. “I gave them (Worksafe) reams and reams of documents, including emails from CFA senior management and senior management at Fiskville in 2012, about testing water quality, asking about testing the water quality.” He said the response was damning. “Thankfully, now we have this parliamentary inquiry and these things are coming out,” he said. Mr Tisbury says he has been subject to what firefighters call the ‘Fiskville bug’. “Every time we went to Fiskville, we would come away with gastro-like symptoms and rashes; every time we would say the water smells a bit off, but the response was always ‘no ... no ... we have tested it to Class A standards.” Fiskville has been closed; perhaps permanently. But that’s only part of the story for Mr Tisbury. He is pinning his hopes on the parliamentary inquiry to bring out the

Big tick for art By KATH GANNAWAY THE Yarra Glen Biennial Art Show held over the long weekend once again got a big tick from locals, visitors and participating artists. Hand-crafted roses placed along Bell Street, and music from a number of performers over the weekend, enticed visitors to the Memorial Hall where about 500 artworks, including sculpture, were on show. Steels Creek residents, and art show committee members, Paul Kelly and Sharon Rowell were among those who left the hall on Monday with more than memories of what they said was an excellent show. They purchased David Doyle’s handcut plasma steel sculpture ‘Vineyard

tree large west view” which took out the prize for the Yarra Valley themed work. “I really like the solid medium of rusty iron, and the fact that it depicts a tree from the local area,” Ms Rowell said. Other winning entries were “Vineyard 3” a water colour by Ying Tang, and ‘Healesville Station’ an oil by Christine Cafarella-Pearce. The judges, acclaimed local artists Margaret McLaughlin and Raeline Sharp, also awarded prizes to Faye De Pasquade for best acrylic and to John Sharp for Young Artist. The People’s Choice was to be announced on Monday. Yarra Glen girls Aleshia and Makayla were among many young people who visited and gave a very positive review. “One of the things I really liked is

that it had a lot of features to it,” Mikayla said. Jane Howatt and Nola Simpson from the Bass Community Centre Watercolour Group praised the artists and the organisers for the high standard of work and the way it was hung. The professional layout was also a plus for Alison Ross and Marg Carey who commented on the variety of work and the themed arrangement. Co-ordinator, Debra Traill, said the standard of the works was acknowledged also by the judges. “Margaret and Raelene were so impressed with the quality of artwork this year that they also selected 12 pieces that they felt deserved being recognised with a Highly Commended achievement,” she said. Do you own or manage at least two hectares of land with at least 1 hectare near Stringybark Creek? Melbourne Water is launching a program which will support landholders to take actions to assist in improving the water quality of Stringybark Creek. As the caretaker of river health this is important to Melbourne Water but it also offers a range of benefits to landholders. The benefits of being involved may include: • improved access, security and quality of water • improved soil health • reduced input costs through retention of nutrients and soil on-farm.

Mum’s worr y over tall trees By KATH GANNAWAY A HEALESVILLE mother has raised concerns about the safety of trees in River Street after a branch fell within inches of her children’s play area. Brookley Scopel is calling on Yarra Ranges Council to make the trees safe, but says she is not asking for the trees to be removed. “This is an iconic street, and it would be sad to see such beautiful trees go, but my concern foremost is to make them safe for my family, and also for the public,” she said. The trees are on the road verge, along the fence line of the property, and also overhang the footpath. “It’s worrying; on windy nights I put the children to sleep in the lounge room because it’s the safest part of the house, and that’s what I’m living with. Ms Scopel has had the trees inspected by the council’s arborist in the past and says she has been assured that they are safe, despite the fact that they drop limbs regularly. She said she asks for an assessment every two years. “I ask for my own peace of mind, and it does give me peace of mind when they come out because they are experienced, but I don’t understand why they are still dropping branches. “Although I have been assured they are safe, my commonsense says they are huge and you have to ask whether they are just being allowed to become too big.” Yarra Ranges Council could not comment on specifically on Ms Scopel’s situation at this stage as their tree crews were out doing inspections after the weekend’s storms. Communications executive officer Tracey Varley said the council’s management of trees on its land included pro-active inspections and inspections in response to an average of 6000 requests each year. She said across around 2500 square kilometres of the municipality, there was estimated to be at

Brookley Scopel with the tree branch that landed near where children Lucas, 5, and Lakoda, 11, play. 135685 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY least five million trees of various types and ages growing on council-controlled land. “The council prioritises tree work in accordance with the apparent risk,” Ms Varley said. “Requests to inspect trees are assessed at the time they are received. “Trees that pose a risk to public safety are dealt with as the highest priority, subject to work loads and available resources.

Out of the trauma, Lily’s now a singing sensation WHEN the Morrow family lost their home and business in the 2009 bushfires, then 7-year-old Lily turned to singing to deal with the trauma. Now, the Marysville resident has made it to the final 10 contestants of a Korean reality TV show ‘KPop Star!’, and is well on her way to becoming Korea’s next KPop sensation. Some 400 Australians initially auditioned for the competition with only four selected to fly to Korea. Her dad, Bruce Morrow, says Lily has thrived since the start of the elimination-style competition. “After her first performance in Ko-

rea one of the judges expressed interest in signing her,” he said. “She has always been a personality and never afraid of attention. She’s a real performer.” Making Lily’s story particularly remarkable is her rise from the devastation of the Black Saturday bushfires. Bruce says his daughter was traumatised and he feared she would not return to her vibrant self. “It affected her really badly, to the point where she didn’t want to go outside,” he said. “If there was any wind she would scream, and I would explain that the trees have been there for hundreds of years, and she would just scream.”

Though she’s overcome adversity in her rise to the top, Lily and her parents still count themselves lucky. “When she left for Korea she said to me, ‘my dream is coming true’,” Bruce said. “We have had to explain to her that what’s happening is quite unbelievable. A lot of really good singers might not tick all the boxes. “Lily has arrived at the right time, they think she’s beautiful and she isn’t afraid of singing in front of millions of people - she just does it and has fun.” Lily will now compete in the finals, which are scheduled for the middle of April. Leaving Australia in October of last year, she has now been gone for

over seven months. Though it keeps her very busy, KPop Star! isn’t Lily’s only artistic project at the moment. She’s also the star of an upcoming feature film, The Weatherman’s Umbrella. Set in Marysville, the film tells the story of a young girl (played by Lily) who becomes involved in a quest to find the weatherman’s umbrella. When the weatherman puts up his umbrella it starts to rain, leaving the town at risk of never seeing rain again if the umbrella isn’t found. The film is set in many renowned locations around Marysville, and shooting is set to conclude upon Lily’s return to Australia.

Life is hectic for Lily Morrow, but it’s exciting. Also during this busy year, the girl who has her own driver and lives in a Korean Hotel will start school at Alexandra Secondary College. Bruce credits Marysville for Lily’s strong start in music and positive attitude about her success. “Garry Sullivan is Lily’s music teacher in Marysville and he is just wonderful,” he said. “One of the things we have always ingrained into her is to always stay grounded. That’s really important.” Anyone wishing to follow the progress of Lily can visit her website, www. teamlilym.wix.com/lily-m-fighting

Preventing falls of elderly DID you know that one third of people aged 65 years and over fall once or more annually? The prevention of falls and mobility-related disability among the older population is a public health challenge worldwide, with falls and fractures having a major impact not only on the older population, but their carers, health services and the community. Falls can result in injuries, loss of confidence and subsequent reduction in activity levels, independence and community participation. Because of this, falls also increase

the likelihood of admission to a residential aged care facility. The impact of falls on the community will grow substantially in the near future as the elderly population increases.

It is estimated that between 2015 and 2050 the number of people aged 60 years and older will increase by 56 per cent in most developed countries. The proportion of Australians aged 65 years or over is predicted to increase from 13 per cent in 2010 to 23 per cent by 2050, with about 2 million being over the age of 80. The good news is that recent studies by physiotherapists have confirmed that physical activity programs are an effective fall-prevention strategy. These studies have also shown that physical activity in ‘middle-aged’

adults (over the age of 40) is likely to reduce falls risk factors in later life. Physical activity for this purpose should address the two key factors associated with falls risk and reduced mobility as we age - balance and strength. However, as far as I am aware, there has been little research into the factors that stop less active people from starting these programs. Apart from the ‘I don’t have time’ excuse, physiotherapists see many who just keep stumbling at the first hurdle with pain or injuries.

The latter is known as a boom/bust cycle - where one starts an exercise program or activity with much gusto, sustains an injury or is unable to keep up the intensive program, and then stops the activity altogether. Sound familiar? The key is start with small, achievable goals, and to listen to your body. A physiotherapist or other qualified health professional can help you begin this journey by addressing existing pain or injury concerns, and then by setting out an achievable exercise regime.

es WOFG patron, Kalorama author, culinary wizard and media personality, Ann Creber. Ms Creber said it was wonderful to see women achieving so much individually, and collectively. “This (exhibition) reflects so much on the past, present and the future, she said touching on the resourcefulness and resilience of women through a fascinating and entertaining personal history. “It shows what women have achieved over the years and it tells its own story, she said. Ms Dale-Hallet said the exhibition was fundamentally about making women on farms visible.

She said looking back at how farming was represented in the past, it was about men and tractors. “Where were the women? They were not there because a lot of what women do is intangible, she said. The banners capturing the theme and issues of every one of the WOFGs over the years document the role of women and the issues that have shaped and continue to shape the lives and roles of women on farms. The exhibition is on display at The Memo in Healesville until the Gathering weekend - 20, 21 and 22 March. Visit www. yrwofg2015.org.au for information and to register.

Knee-jerk reaction TONY Abbott treads a thin line with his intention to remove ’the benefit of the doubt’, which is the basic tenet of our legal system. Before the Lindt Cafe shooting, our security services received 16 warnings about the man responsible. They took no notice. We obviously need a review of our security services protocols and Centrelink procedures, not a knee-jerk reaction leading to a reduction in our liberty. Removing an outfit like Hizb ut Tahrir is another issue, they have made it clear they wish to introduce a world caliphate under Sharia law which is the antithesis of our democratic institutions and therefore our legal system. There is no room for them in our society any more than there would be for a Nazi Party. Tony Abbott ought to consider the words of Benjamin Franklin before he goes off halfcocked: “They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty or safety. Tony Jones, Badger Creek.

Flags a mark of respect I COMMEND this newspaper’s continuing coverage of many items related to the huge loss of property and 173 human lives on Black Saturday, 7 February 2009. These memories will remain. The Australian National and Indigenous flags flew at half-mast on Saturday, 7 February, 2015, outside the Yarra Ranges Council’s Lilydale of-

fice and Yarra Glen Community Hall as a mark of respect. I know, because I walked past both of the building several times on memorial Saturday this year. Yarra Glen and District Men’s Shed received substantial funding to enable the establishment of a program for district males, including those affected one way or another by the Black Saturday fires. A suitable program for men with fire-related mental health issues was given as a strong reason pursuing donations and pitching for the 220sqm workshop to be build, an add-on to the west end of Gary Cooper basketball pavilion in McKenzie Reserve. The shed members have built their own flagpole and brick retaining wall in public soil carved out of an environmental safety island dividing the pavilion parking space in McKenzie Reserve. Mr Tony Smith, MP for Casey, presented the Yarra Glen and District Men’s Shed with an Australian ensign many, many weeks before the official opening. The national flag should be flown in conjunction with all major events, including official days of mourning, Australia Day, Anzac Day, Remembrance Day - and whenever local government (Yarra Ranges) directs. The Yarra Glen shed is public property leased from council. I observed on Saturday, 7 February 2015, no Australian or other flag flying on the mast outside the shed. Could Yarra Ranges Council, and MP for Casey Tony Smith, confirm in writing all the official protocols concerning, who, when and where any flag can be flown? Noel Buchanan, Yarra Glen.

Action on capping rates By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM A NEWLY appointed commission will ensure transparent and sustainable rate increases for residents. The government last week honoured its commitment to introduce a fair rates capping system in appointing the Essential Services Commission (ESC) to provide advice on the frame-

work. A major election promise of the Labor Government was to cap council rates at the rate of inflation and keep them aligned with the cost of living. MP for Monbulk James Merlino says this objective has been achieved with the appointment of the ESC to provide advice. “Monbulk electorate residents shouldn’t get a shock when they open

their rates notice. This is about ensuring council rates are fair and reflect the needs of our community,” he said. “Our plan means more accountability in the way councils release their rates, as well as promoting greater sustainability in the sector.” The ESC will work with local councils and collaborate with bodies such as the Municipal Association of

Victoria, Victorian Local Governance Association and LGPro. They will also consult with a sector panel established by the Minister for Local Government, Natalie Hutchins. The final framework report will be presented to the Minister for Finance and the Minister for Local Government by 31 October 2015.

Brothers in bravery don’t fear clippers By KATH GANNAWAY ‘BRAVE Buddies’ is a great name for Healesville friends Paterson, Oliver and Deacon. The boys will lose their locks on Friday, 13 March, as part of the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. With the support of family and friends they have already raised over $1600 for the cause. Paterson’s reason for shaving his head is close to home. “My mum had a brother who died at the age of 15 from leukaemia,” he said. “So I wanted to do this shave in his memory.” His buddies didn’t think twice about joining him and that, according to all three, is what being buddies is all about. “Having Ollie and Deacon joining me means everything to me,” Paterson said.

“I don’t think I could do it if I was alone.” Ollie and Deacon feel equally blessed. “I’m proud of being chosen by Paterson to be part of this and I definitely think, to me and Deacon, it means we will really be doing something that will help lots of people,” Ollie said. The big shave will take place at St Brigid’s Primary School, where the Brave Buddies are in Grade 4, at 2.45pm on Friday. The boys have garnered the support of Yarra Valley Quality Meats and Bakers Delight for a sausage sizzle and are asking for a gold coin donation to help increase their tally. Donations can be made at the school throughout the week or the day, or online at www.worldsgreatestshave.com. Search for St Brigid’s Brave Buddies under Sponsor a Team.

Rubbish clampdown in forest swoop CAMPING areas and known rubbish dumping spots came under scrutiny by Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning officers and police in February. DELWP forest officer Joy Harte said department officers spent a Sunday in the Yarra State Forest last month engaging with the public about bushfire safety, planned burning and trail bike riding. The operation was supported by Victoria Police which also carried out random breath testing and vehicle checks. Ms Harte said officers using four wheel drives and trail bikes patrolled the forest concentrating on the camping and rubbish dumping spots. “It was a great opportunity to talk to forest users about the work we do in state forests at this time of year including planned burning and bushfire safety,” Ms Harte said. “DELWP staff also spoke to visitors about the diverse range of recreation opportunities the Yarra State Forest offers,” she said. “It was disappointing to find the Britannia Creek Cave site littered with rubbish including a mattress and television. “A clean up for this area is being organised. “The day was all about how DELWP and different agencies can work with the community to better protect the Yarra State Forest.”

First gig will be a ripper TELECOM Joe is promising a high-energy, fun night at Healesville RSL on Saturday, 14 March. “It’s our first gig for the year ... and we’re ready to go,” said band member Brendan Prout. The popular home-grown Healesville band is donating its services for the event to help raise funds for a maxi taxi for the Yarra Valley. Telecom Joe formed three years ago. “Adam (Frogley) and I had been in bands back in school, and so had Ben (Wallace) and Casey (Clements), so it’s the coming together of two local bands,” Brendan said. They have established a strong following with their gutsy ’70s, ’80s and ’90s rock including the music of Jimi Hendrix, Powderfinger, Pearl Jam, The Rolling Stones, Paul Kelly, The Eagles and more.

Concert tickets, taxi and restaurant vouchers are among the prizes, and there will be a free courtesy bus on offer. Admission is $20, with doors open at 8pm. Visit www.freedombydesign.org.au or www. healesvilleRSL.com.au for more information.

Magic of Ecotopia By KATH GANNAWAY THIS year’s Ecotopia Junction Community Festival is going to be magic ... and magical! Organised by Yarra Valley ECOSS, the festival takes over the Yarra Valley Parklands each year to celebrate community in its many manifestations - food, environment, music, dance, history, storytelling, sport, fashion, family and fun. The theme this year is ‘Celebrating home-grown in the Yarra Valley’, and there will be lots of home-grown produce, talent, ideas and initiatives on show. There will also be some

great guest artists from Chris Morant, the magician/circus man of Australia’s Got Talent fame. Hip-hop artist Joelistics, fresh from his JJJ and the Asia Cup performances, will hold a hip-hop workshop and the Zucchini Clan kids band, Monkeys Wedding, Anecdote and Kung Fu will also be on solar and biodiesel-fueled stages during the day. The festival’s trademark event, the recycled fashion parade is back ... and bigger, hosted by the outrageous Hans Allover.

Market stalls will have loads of local organic produce, there will be cooking demonstrations, men’s and women’s tents, environmental information stalls, healers, the smoothycycle pedal-powered smoothies, bike and skateboard maintenance, and solar-brewed Kombucha. Local history is on show as part of the festival with the opportunity to wander through the Upper Yarra Museum, enjoy the old-style playground, blacksmith’s shop and other exhibits. The festival is on Sunday, 22 March from 10am to 4pm. Visit www.ecoss.org.au for more information.

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM A PROJECT that has seen the online publication of stories behind headstones at the Lilydale Cemetery was launched last month. ‘Stories Behind the Headstones’ was carried out by the Lilydale and District Historical Society and shares the stories of headstones dated before 1931. The project is entirely online and will be a valuable tool for anyone looking to trace their ancestors in the area. On Saturday 28 February, Yarra Ranges mayor Maria McCarthy joined members of the society at the Old Lilydale Court House for the launch of the project. Lilydale Historical Society president Lorraine Smith said she was grateful for the support of the council. “The project would not

have been possible without the $2500 grant from the Shire of Yarra Ranges, which built on our previous online work of Faces, Places and Events,” she said. Browsing through the names listed on the website reveals the fascinating stories of those who first settled in Lilydale and surrounding areas. The harrowing tale of the three Upton boys, who died of carbon monoxide poisoning one night in 1968, or the account of the electrocution of four-yearold Robert Pender, provide insight into the lives and deaths of the residents during that era. Entries into the database include as much information about the individual as possible, such as an image of the headstone, interment information, the headstone’s inscription, a biography, an obituary and references listing the source of

the information so that visitors to the site may conduct further research. The project came to life, thanks to the work of many volunteers donating their time over an extended period. Using images of headstones from photographer Sandy Ross, a team of 12 members of the Historical Society spent more than 12 months researching their stories. Various sources were used in their research, including the Lilydale Express newspaper, history books, family histories or information held in the society’s archives. During the era, the Lilydale cemetery was the final resting place for people from Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville, Yarra Junction and everywhere in between. ‘STILL Alice’ is heart-breaking in the best way possible. Dr Alice Howland (Julianne Moore, in the role that earned her a long-overdue Oscar) is a linguistics professor who is tragically diagnosed with young-onset Alzheimer’s Syndrome. As the condition wears away her mind, Alice and her family must figure out how to cope. Moore delivers a staggering performance of extraordi-

nary precision and nuance. In a flawlessly subtle progression, she vividly portrays every stage of Alzheimer’s including defiance, acceptance, the childlike later stages and the dim complacency of being hardly even aware of her memory problems. ‘Still Alice’ is a film of tremendous impact and profound sadness, yet never resorts to hysterics. The film draws us close into Alice’s personality, career and family, which makes their gradual deterioration all the more painful. With such an intimate focus, this is a film where mun-

dane situations like completing a speech, getting lost or trying to find the bathroom are unimaginably tense. Whether happy or sad, it’s gratifying when a film makes you feel so intensely, and there is still hope in the form of Alice’s struggling, loving family and the tiny fragments of her mind that never quite disappear. A beautifully poignant character study, ‘Still Alice’ is one of last year’s truly essential films for its moving and realistic depiction of a condition that affects far too many of us. - Seth Hynes

Rain patchy, but all catchments strong By KATH GANNAWAY THERE have been enough puddles in February to keep keen rain-spotters reflecting on the fact that although the rainfall is, again, up and down across the Yarra Valley, the water supply dams are, comparatively, well stocked. The end of month figure for Melbourne’s storage dams was 1,333,859 megalitres or 73.6 per cent of capacity. Keith Thomas in Warburton recorded 67mm against the average

69.5mm, with the first two months of the year registering 127.5mm, just short of the average of 148.2mm. In Hoddles Creek, Doug Armstrong recorded 78mm over seven days compared to 62mm over five days in 2014. His first two-month figures were 137mm compared to 90mm last year against an average rainfall of 76mm - so a bit above. Alma Mitchell in Healesville recorded 59.4mm over five days compared with 29.6mm over six days for February, 2014.

Keeping family wealth and peace WHEN did you last update your will? It’s a topic that most of us don’t like to think about, but wills provide crucial assistance and direction to families following the passing of a loved one. Here are some reasons why you should look into creating or updating your will: It’s easier than ever before. Lawyers can easily compile your wishes into a legal document, and can help with the technical side of drafting a will. It saves stress and worry. After drafting a will, you won’t be concerned about questions like ‘who will look after my children if something happens?’ You will have already thought that through and made your intentions clear, and that will bring peace of mind. It can prevent arguments between families. The passing of a loved one is a difficult time for families, and can be made more traumatic by arguments over the division of assets. Eliminate the possibility of conflict arising by clearly stating what your relatives will each receive. It will prevent the state from

dividing your assets. If the state is left to deal with your estate, they may divide it completely against your will. There will be no way of knowing your wishes. It’s your choice. You worked hard for everything you have, and you should be

able to control where it goes when you no longer need it. Making a will is one way you can assist your family and ensure that your assets go to the people you choose. Save the stress for yourself and others by contacting a lawyer to assist in drafting a will.

Wind to pedal power By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM FABULOUS conditions and friendly faces greeted a group of cyclists whizzing through Healesville last Saturday. The Variety Cycle is a 15-day cycling event, with a variety of cycling options from Sydney to Hobart, via Melbourne. Often referred to as the cycling equivalent of the famous yacht race, this year members of the Wild Oats yacht crew swapped wind power for pedal power to participate in the ride. The group cycled into Healesville and stopped for morning tea at Queens Park on Saturday morning before continuing their 190.5km journey to St Kilda. Variety Children’s Charity CEO Tam Johnston said it was great to see the riders so warmly welcomed into Healesville. “We’re so pleased that the Healesville community were happy to host and farewell The Variety Cycle peloton,” he said. “It’s heart-warming to be able to receive the warmth and smiles from so many local communities and spread awareness of Variety and what we do to help local kids in need, in such a unique and fun way.” The ride will finish in Hobart this Sunday 15 March and aims to raise $1 million for the charity through donations and sponsorship. To find out more or donate to the cause, visit www.varietycycle.com. au.

Getting the carbs in are Paul Thierry (Sydney), Jono Tucker (Melbourne), Peter Yates (Sydney) and Hugh Evans (Sydney).

Variety riders Mark Trounson (Mooroolbark), ‘Wild Oats’ sailor Nathan Ellis (Avalon), Bade Stapelton (Melbourne), Christopher Mapp (Sydney), Stephen Ainsworth (Sydney) and Eric Aichinger (Canberra).

Tigers bust Eagles’ hopes By CHRIS ANDERSON YVDCA WHEN the dust settled on a hotly contested day of cricket, the finals teams emerged for all grades. In DJ Strachan Shield, only Yarra Junction could unseat those in the four, but to its benefit, it knew where they stood: win or bust. The Eagles hosted Woori Yallock in a clash between two teams littered with talent. Yarra Junction opened up with the bat but struggled to make an impression. Consistent opener Marcus Hottes (30) and young star Cam Spaulding (21) put together a useful early partnership. Unfortunately for the Eagles, neither batsman could capitalise on their starts and quickly found themselves on the back foot, succumbing to Ben Hayes (2/22) and Ryan Smith (2/22). Led by the swing and pace of Si-

mon Young (2/22), the Tigers had too many aces up their sleeves, and dismissed the opposition for 108. In reply Quinton Hodgkinson (2/17) and Hayden Wilson (2/22) put the wind up the Tigers, and had them questioning their self-belief. Unfortunately for the home side, brilliant all-rounder Simon Young (49) answered the call and led his side to a three-wicket win. Seville finished its home and away season with a win in a rather uninspiring contest on the road to Healesville. Bowling first, the Bloods found some grunt, and unsettled the reigning premiers with their approach. Seville didn’t seem to cope, and despite a couple of handy knocks from Scott Rackham (21) and Ryan Akers (21) early on, they had no answers for Healesville’s rising talent Dermott Fry (4/21), who teamed well with Chance Burridge (2/20) and Dylan Moore (2/19), as the home side swept through the Blues, dismissing them for 88.

Matt Tilney (3/14) and Dean Troyhan (3/20) enjoyed the fruits of success after toiling manfully the week previously, while the newly promoted Mark Sandfort (3/11) had a second game to remember as he polished off the home side for a dismal 64. Not for the first time in recent years, Seville has earned the right to host a semi-final. Meanwhile, Mount Evelyn put its hat into the premiership ring, as they finally captured a big scalp, accounting for ladder-leader Warburton-Millgrove at home. Mount Evelyn won the toss and elected to bat in tricky conditions. Despite losing an early wicket, Gareth Fraser (59) and Chris Anderson (23) battled undeterred against an attack that possesses many threats. Eventually, Fraser broke the reins, and, with wickets in hand, slowly accelerated the scoring. With the pair falling when the whips began to crack, the Burras be-

gan to take advantage as Luke Darwall (5/34) began to tuck away some muchdeserved wickets for the visitors. But the home side eventually pushed the score to 8/151, courtesy of some hefty blows late from Jesse Fraser (22). In reply, with Chris Anderson (2/15) capturing a couple of wickets early, the home side edged their noses in front, where it remained for the majority of the visitors’ innings, despite another brilliant knock by David Lever (53). Brothers Brad (3/33) and Kane Jones (4/20) ensured the Rovers would clinch the game and a finals berth claiming vital wickets along the way. DJ STRACHAN SHIELD Woori Yallock 7/110 (S. Young 49, Q. Cricketers have a carnival By KATH GANNAWAY JUNIOR YVCA cricketers packed the Mount Evelyn pitches on Sunday for the annual Super8 knock-out series. The carnival atmosphere highlighted the emphasis on having fun but there was plenty of opportunity also to have a hard hit and build fielding skills in the lead up to the YVCA finals. Host club, Mount Evelyn, along with Healesville, Seville, Wandin/ Coldstream, Launching Place and the Ringwood District Cricket Association Girls teams made up the 150 players in the Under 12, 14 and 16 teams. Mount Evelyn took top honours in the Under 12s against the RDCA Girls, Healesville defeated Launching Place in the Under 14 and Mount Evelyn came out winners against Seville in the Under 16 games.
