In their footsteps By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM
Members of the Emerald RSL prepare for the opening of Anzac Walk tomorrow. From left: Peter Maloney (RSL president), Geoff Spring (project manager), Tony Shovelton (chair of organising committee), and Russ Nielsen (project designer). Picture: KATHRYN BERMINGHAM “We’ve also got a special tribute to Emerald’s only Victoria Cross winner, Donovan Joynt.” The memorial trail consists of eight pillars, each featuring four Emerald soldiers, as well as additional pillars to commemorate the lone pine, the Unknown Soldier, Anzac Place and Donovan Joynt. The RSL research team spent months locating the photos of as many of the fallen Diggers as possible. Tomorrow morning, an Air Force Roulettes squadron will fly overhead to salute Sir Peter, and the returned Diggers will then form a guard of honour. Following this, the Governor-
General will visit the Statue of the Unknown Soldier and the opening ceremony will commence. Sir Peter will give an address, and the plaque will be unveiled and a bomb burst will sound as the roulettes revisit the skies overhead. Emerald will revisit the early 1900s for the day, and many visitors will attend the ceremony in period costume. There will also be veteran cars and bikes, the Light Horse Brigade and the navy band from Cerberus will play music popular of the era. The walk was funded by over $100,000 in grants through the Anzac Centenary program, as well as funding from the State Government and council. The grants are part of the celebra-

OVER a year of planning and preparation will come to fruition at the opening of Anzac Walk in Emerald tomorrow. Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and Lady Cosgrove will join Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Michael Ronaldson, mayor of Cardinia Leticia Wilmot, CEO of Anzac House Michael Annett, MP for La Trobe Jason Wood and members of the Emerald RSL at the opening, which commemorates the 32 local men who lost their lives in World War I. In a touching symbolic gesture, representatives of the fallen soldiers will arrive back in Emerald on Puffing Billy, finally receiving the heroes’ welcome they deserve. Students and teachers from Emerald Primary School will also arrive by train, dressed in period costume to recreate the occasion. Emerald RSL president Peter Maloney said that members of the organising committee had spent the past few months ensuring that everything was ready for the opening. “It’s a very significant event for Emerald, and we’re preparing for around 3000 people to attend the ceremony,” he said last Wednesday. “The process has been a lot of work, but we’re very pleased with the finished product.” The walk will feature 10 different audio stations, where visitors can learn about the impact of war on the town of Emerald and hear the stories of individuals involved. They give detailed insight into the lives of locals such as Emerald’s Eliza Wright, whose sons Frederick and Sydney both died in the early stages of the war. Mr Maloney said it was important that the history of the area was preserved for future generations, and that the stories demonstrated the true effect of war. “It was important that we included information about every individual soldier, and recognised their stories and involvement in the war.

Fiskville was ‘Riskville’ By KATH GANNAWAY THERE’S no relief for Yarra Ranges MFB firefighter Mick Tisbury in the closure last week of the CFA’s Fiskville training facility. There is, however, some sense of vindication. Mr Tisbury, a firefighter for 27 years and on the executive of the United Firefighters’ Union, has been investigating and pushing for a thorough investigation into the use of toxic materials, and water contamination, at Fiskville for the past three years. It’s been a harrowing experience that started with a media report in 2011 of a suspected cancer cluster in people who had trained at Fiskville. Mr Tisbury said a series of reports and correspondence showed that it was not only people at the higher echelons of the CFA that knew of the health dangers, but in government. The CFA, however, says it has acted on information and reports and has consistently cited reports that indicate that risks identified were “low and acceptable”. CFA Chief Executive Officer, Mick Bourke, is on record as saying: “No stone has been left unturned and no expense spared in ensuring Fiskville is safe.” If anyone is convinced, it’s certainly not Mr Tisbury - or, the Victorian Government. Heads have already rolled with the sacking by the Labor Government of Worksafe Chairman, David Kransnostein, and its CEO, Denise Cosgrove, after they were unable to guarantee the water at Fiskville had been tested. Worksafe had assured the government in December that the site was safe, prompting Premier Daniel Andrews to say he had lost confidence in them. The closure of the training ground, where thousands of MFB firefighters and CFA volunteer and career fighters have done training over several decades, follows the announcement in December of a parliamentary inquiry
into Fiskville. Mr Tisbury, who was also an instructor at Fiskville on and off between 2001 and 2012, said he had been stonewalled at every turn in his efforts to get information, and/or action. “For the past three years using freedom of information we’ve gained access to about 180,000 pages of reports and documents,” he said. “What I am reading is horrendous, so you can imagine how bad the redacted comments are.” Mr Tisbury says nobody was listening - and if they were, they weren’t telling anyone, including the firefighters. “I was sick of asking MFB and CFA senior management and the politicians, got nowhere with Worksafe, went to the coroner and police ... the coroner wouldn’t investigate because Worksafe weren’t investigating,” he said. “I gave them (Worksafe) reams and reams of documents, including emails from CFA senior management and senior management at Fiskville in 2012, about testing water quality, asking about testing the water quality.” He said the response was damning. “Thankfully, now we have this parliamentary inquiry and these things are coming out,” he said. Mr Tisbury says he has been subject to what firefighters call the ‘Fiskville bug’. “Every time we went to Fiskville, we would come away with gastro-like symptoms and rashes; every time we would say the water smells a bit off, but the response was always ‘no ... no ... we have tested it to Class A standards.” Fiskville has been closed; perhaps permanently. But that’s only part of the story for Mr Tisbury. He is pinning his hopes on the parliamentary inquiry to bring out the whole truth behind Fiskville. “All I ever wanted, from the word go, was to get the truth,” he said. “I want to know what we have been exposed to. I want to know who knew,
Healesville firefighter Mick Tisbury wants the truth on Fiskville. 135699 and what they knew. I wanted the joint closed down, and I want the people who knew to be held to account.” Mr Tisbury says the way will be open then for people who have been exposed to have regular health moni-
toring, so that any problems that develop can be caught early. A CFA spokesman responded to the Mail’s inquiries with a statement saying the matters were being considered by the parliamentary inquiry into Fis-

More choices for disabled young: plea By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM TWO weeks out from the opening of its Lilydale site, Melba Support Services has called for more accommodation options for young people living with a disability. In a submission to the Senate Inquiry into the adequacy of existing residential care arrangements available, Melba maintained that residents should be able to choose where to live. Melba Support Services CEO Glenn Foard said the government
should strive to improve the choices of young people. “Government policy should assist individuals with disability exercise choice,” Mr Foard said. “Other members of the community are able to choose where they live and with whom they live. This is a fundamental right that should be afforded to people with disability.” In the submission, Melba suggests several oprtions to provide young people with more accommodation op-
tions, including initiatives run by the services including a housing development in Lilydale and a home for young women in Mount Evelyn. It draws on the personal anecdotes of young people living with disability, including that of Melba Board Member Colin Rose. After suffering a spinal cord injury that left him a quadriplegic at 23, he was left with no option but to move in with his parents. He said he felt powerless and was forced to turn to aged care.
“The only way my parents were able to get a break was for me to spend time at a nursing home, sharing accommodation with approximately 50 elderly people in the latter stages of their lives,” he said. “It was totally inappropriate for a young man in his twenties to be placed in an aged-care facility just so my parents could get some respite. “It was demoralising for me and my parents who felt guilty.” Mr Foard, along with Mr Rose, will
present further evidence when they attend the Senate Inquiry tomorrow. Meanwhile, a celebration of Melba Support Services’ relocation to Lilydale will be held on Thursday 26 March. Held at the new site, the old Swinburne University Campus LD building, the official opening will be held at 2.45pm. A barbecue, coffee van and jumping castle will be part of the festivities from 2pm-7pm.

Falls and the elderly DID you know that one third of people aged 65 years and over fall once or more annually? The prevention of falls and mobility-related disability among the older population is a public health challenge worldwide, with falls and fractures having a major impact not only on the older population, but their carers, health services and the community. Falls can result in injuries, loss of confidence and subsequent reduction in activity levels, independence and community participation. Because of this, falls also increase the likelihood of admission to a residential aged care facility. The impact of falls on the community will grow substantially in the near future as the elderly popu-
The good news is that recent studies by physiotherapists have confirmed that physical activity programs are an effective fall-prevention strategy. These studies have also shown that physical activity in ‘middleaged’ adults (over the age of 40) is likely to reduce falls risk factors in later life. Physical activity for this purpose should address the two key factors associated with falls risk and reduced mobility as we age - balance and strength. However, as far as I am aware, there has been little research into the factors that stop less active people from starting these programs. Apart from the ‘I don’t have time’ excuse, physiotherapists see

lation increases. It is estimated that between 2015 and 2050 the number of people aged 60 years and older will increase by 56 per cent in most developed countries. The proportion of Australians aged 65 years or over is predicted to increase from 13 per cent in 2010 to 23 per cent by 2050, with about 2 million being over the age of 80.
many who just keep stumbling at the first hurdle with pain or injuries. The latter is known as a boom/ bust cycle - where one starts an exercise program or activity with much gusto, sustains an injury or is unable to keep up the intensive program, and then stops the activity altogether. Sound familiar? The key is start with small, achievable goals, and to listen to your body. A physiotherapist or other qualified health professional can help you begin this journey by addressing existing pain or injury concerns, and then by setting out an achievable exercise regime.

Green Army recruits wanted By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM FOLLOWING the success of the first Green Army project in the Dandenong Ranges, the Federal Government has opened up applications for a second round of recruits. The Green Army is open to 17-24-year-olds in La Trobe, who will become part of the largest team of young Australians supporting engagagement in environmental action across the nation. La Trobe MP Jason Wood encouraged young people to become involved, saying participants gain valuable skills during the experience. “The second round of the Green Army projects are set to get underway in the coming weeks and young people who want to gain valuable skills, training and experience in environmental and heritage conservation fields are encouraged to register their interest,”
he said. The young people will work on local environmental projects, including the Dandenong Wandering Trad Project managed by Conservation Volunteers Australia and sponsored by the Community Weed Alliance of the Dandenongs. Less than two weeks ago, Mr Wood attended the graduation of the first intake of Green Army participants, telling them they had gained skills that will make them stand out to employers. He is encouraging other young people to get involved for the same reason. “Green Army participants will be able to undertake accredited training such as work readiness, conservation and land management, heritage conservation, project and human resource management and heritage trade skills,” he said.
1176466-CB11-15
“We know that after an incredibly successful round one, most participants have moved on to gain employment and all have attained their training certificates in the Green Army projects of La Trobe.” The Green Army was a key election commitment of the Coalition, with $525 million allocated to the program over four years. It is one of the Government’s major environmental initiatives and aims to support local environment and heritage conservation projects nationwide. It will also provide training to 15,000 young Australians by 2018. Young people interested in applying for the second round of the Green Army recruits can do so through appointed service providers for each state and territory. A PROJECT that has seen the online publication of stories behind headstones at the Lilydale Cemetery was launched last month. ‘Stories Behind the Headstones’ was carried out by the Lilydale and District Historical Society and shares the stories of headstones dated before 1931. The project is entirely online and will be a valuable tool for anyone looking to trace their ancestors in the area. On Saturday 28 February, Yarra Ranges mayor Maria McCarthy joined members of the society at the Old Lilydale Court House for the launch of the project. Lilydale Historical Society president Lorraine Smith said she was grateful for the support of the council. “The project would not
have been possible without the $2500 grant from the Shire of Yarra Ranges, which built on our previous online work of Faces, Places and Events,” she said. Browsing through the names listed on the website reveals the fascinating stories of those who first settled in Lilydale and surrounding areas. The harrowing tale of the three Upton boys, who died of carbon monoxide poisoning one night in 1968, or the account of the electrocution of four-yearold Robert Pender, provide insight into the lives and deaths of the residents during that era. Entries into the database include as much information about the individual as possible, such as an image of the headstone, interment information, the headstone’s inscription, a biography, an obituary and references listing the source of
the information so that visitors to the site may conduct further research. The project came to life, thanks to the work of many volunteers donating their time over an extended period. Using images of headstones from photographer Sandy Ross, a team of 12 members of the Historical Society spent more than 12 months researching their stories. Various sources were used in their research, including the Lilydale Express newspaper, history books, family histories or information held in the society’s archives. During the era, the Lilydale cemetery was the final resting place for people from Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville, Yarra Junction and everywhere in between. WHEN did you last update your will? It’s a topic that most of us don’t like to think about, but wills provide crucial assistance and direction to families following the passing of a loved one. Here are some reasons why you should look into creating or updating your will: - It’s easier than ever before. Lawyers can easily compile your wishes into a legal document, and can help with the technical side of drafting a will. It saves stress and worry. After drafting a will, you won’t be concerned about questions like ‘who will look after my children if something happens?’ You will have already thought that through and made your intentions clear, and that will bring peace of mind. It can prevent arguments between families. The passing of a loved one is a difficult time for families, and can be made more traumatic by arguments over the division of assets. Eliminate the possibility of conflict arising by clearly stating what your relatives will each receive. It will prevent the state from dividing your assets. If the
Heart-breaking portrayal Still Alice Starring: Julianne Moore, Alec Baldwin, Kristen Stewart ‘STILL Alice’ is heart-breaking in the best way possible. Dr Alice Howland (Julianne Moore, in the role that earned her a long-overdue Oscar) is a linguistics professor who is tragically diagnosed with young-onset Alzheimer’s Syndrome. As the condition wears away her mind, Alice and her family must figure out how to cope. Moore delivers a staggering performance of extraordi-
nary precision and nuance. In a flawlessly subtle progression, she vividly portrays every stage of Alzheimer’s including defiance, acceptance, the childlike later stages and the dim complacency of being hardly even aware of her memory problems. ‘Still Alice’ is a film of tremendous impact and profound sadness, yet never resorts to hysterics. The film draws us close into Alice’s personality, career and family, which makes their gradual deterioration all the more painful. With such an intimate focus, this is a film where mun-

Whether happy or sad, it’s gratifying when a film makes you feel so intensely, and there is still hope in the form of Alice’s struggling, loving family and the tiny fragments of her mind that never quite disappear. A beautifully poignant character study, ‘Still Alice’ is one of last year’s truly essential films for its moving and realistic depiction of a condition that affects far too many of us. - Seth Hynes

Kick start to life By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM LIFE begins at the Selby Community House - and has for the past 40 years. The community house will celebrate its 40th birthday at the annual Selby Fest community festival on Saturday 21 March. One of the first community houses in Victoria, the centre offers services such as childcare and playgroup, a variety of courses as well as a venue for performances and for community groups to hold meetings. House manager Tracy van Vloten said the
house was focused on promoting and serving the community. “We see ourselves as a place of social inclusion, education for those heading back into the workforce and an opportunity for mums to come together in playgroups or to provide childcare,” she said. “From our point of view, it’s the community’s house. We’re here for them.” This year the festival will host many family activities including live entertainment across three states, market stalls, fabulous food, Indigenous dance, local art, a fashion parade and more.
Dandenong Ranges Secondary Schools State Schools are Great Schools
There will be a variety of workshops, a healing space, an Indigenous dance and a dunking machine, where visitors will be able to dunk the local school principal and other well-known locals. With a focus on the beautiful Selby scenery, there will be a native wildlife and conservation Minak trail walk and a chance to get up close with furry and scaly native animals. There will be a shuttle bus operating to and from Belgrave on the day. The festival will run from 11am-6.30pm on Saturday 21 March. A NEWLY appointed commission will ensure transparent and sustainable rate increases for residents. The government last week honoured its commitment to introduce a fair rates capping system in appointing the Essential Services Commission (ESC) to provide advice on the framework. A major election promise of the Labor Government was to cap council rates at the rate of inflation and keep them aligned with the cost of living. MP for Monbulk James Merlino says this objective has been achieved with the appointment of the ESC to provide advice. “Monbulk electorate residents shouldn’t get a shock when they open their rates notice. This is about ensuring council rates are fair and reflect the needs of our community,” he said. “Our plan means more accountability in the way councils release their rates, as well as promoting greater sustainability in the sector.” The ESC will work with local councils and collaborate with bodies such as the Municipal Association of Victoria, Victorian Local Governance Association and LGPro. They will also consult with a sector panel established by the Minister for Local Government, Natalie Hutchins. The final framework report will be presented to the Minister for Finance and the Minister for Local Government by 31 October 2015.

PICTURE PERFECT IN EVERY WAY SURROUNDED by about half an acre of beautiful garden beds and shady mature trees, this character weatherboard home is one of the original properties on the ridge and has a mixture of contemporary fittings and quality craftsmanship, making it an ideal family home. Boasting about 26 squares of living space, the home has been well designed with four spacious bedrooms, home office, three bathrooms and both formal and informal living and dining areas that flow easily out onto a large timber decking with spa area that overlooks the sparkling blue water of Cardinia reservoir.
The floorplan is fantastic with bedroom areas at both ends of the home while an over-sized master bedroom with ensuite awaits privately on the lower level. This gorgeous room could also make the perfect bed and breakfast suite, subject to council approval, teenagers’ retreat or family/guest accommodation. The charming French provincial inspired kitchen is highlighted by panelled cabinetry, slide out pantry, dishwasher and modern appliances. Timber sash windows and large glass sliding doors allow plenty of light to stream throughout. The property has dual driveway access

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM FUND-RAISING is a family affair for Trinity and Mark Higgins. The Monbulk 11-year-old and her dad will shave their heads this weekend to raise money for people living with cancer. Her mum, Zara, said Trinity’s decision was out of the blue, but not unexpected. “She came to me one day and told me she wanted to shave her head for cancer, and I said if you’re sure then let’s organise it,” Zara said.

“And Mark said, ‘Well if you’re willing to do it, then I’ll do it with you.’” Trinity and Mark are participating in the Leukaemia Foundation’s ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ one of Australia’s biggest fund-raisers. Between 12 March and 15 March, more than 150,000 people will shave or colour their hair to fund research and support Australians living with blood cancer. The pair is hoping to raise $560 in donations, and are appealing to the community to dig deep for the worthy cause.

Zara said Trinity was confident in her decision, and was excited about the possibility of helping people with cancer. “She’s got beautiful hair, but I think it’s great she feels this is one way she can make a difference in other people’s lives,” she said. “The community has been really supportive, and we’re just hoping to raise as much as we can in the lead-up to the event.” Trinity and Mark will shave their heads this Saturday 14 March at Edison Bakehouse in Monbulk from noon.

Birthday boy upset the party By STEVE BROWN KNOX Garden’s first taste of Reeves Shield finals action ended in disaster when they were defeated by Eildon Park by nine wickets inside day one of a twoday affair at the weekend. The Falcons went into the game full of confidence, after defeating the Panthers only seven days before. After winning the toss, they elected to bat, but after that nothing went right. Eildon Park seamer Michael Sinclair, celebrating his 37th birthday, struck from the first over, leaving The Gardens shell-shocked, losing two wickets without a run on the board. Falcon’s skipper Steve Alderton went to the crease with his team under immense pressure, and he dug in until the tea break, but unfortunately was dismissed second ball after the interval for a tenacious 25. Knox Gardens had no answer to Sinclair as he claimed 5/7 from 11 overs and took two catches, one being a candidate for a classic catch. Meanwhile, medium-pacer, Adrian Baltruschaitis, chipped in with 3/15 from seven overs, as the batting side was bundled out for just 61 after 50 overs. Aggressive opening batting pair Cody and Ben Morris began the chase in quick fashion and the Falcons conceded defeat at 5.45pm, with Eildon Park in full control at 1/83. In the other semi-final, being played at Batterham Park, top side The Basin
Star Ben Grimes, who played in the FTGDCA representative side this year, made 38 not out in the grand final. 135703
Ben the star By STEVE UTTING TWO of the Monbulk cricket teams were lucky enough to participate in finals action over the weekend. After sneaking into fourth position, beating the top side in the semi, the Under 13s played in the grand final against Rowville. After the first night, Rowville was in a strong position at 2/80 versus Monbulk’s 5/59. On the second night, Monbulk managed to bat out their 40 overs and reach 9/121. With two early wickets, Monbulk put pressure on Rowville, but they were too strong in the end, passing the score at 5/122 in the 35th over. Ben Grimes was the star, who
retired and then came back in at the end to make 38 not out, but all boys need to be congratulated on a great season and finishing runners-up. Meanwhile, the senior 3rd XI, who finished on top of the ladder, played in their semi-final versus Ferntree Gully at home. Batting first in this splitinnings match, Monbulk batted patiently to reach 3/103 after 35 overs. Damian Howard 39 and Jason Dekkers 38 not out were the main contributors. Monbulk bowled out Ferntree Gully for 92 on the first day and reached the grand final. Skipper Tim Fogarty and his team will play in the grand final at Monbulk next weekend.
was well placed at 1/67 from 37 overs against Johnson Park. The Basin was on target for 200 until some tight finals bowling from the Sharks, in particular off-spinner Steve Devenish, with 5/40. The Bears then slumped to 7/164 with seven overs remaining, before losing the final three wickets for just one run to be all out 165. Opening batsman Joel Clarke occupied the crease for some time for his 36, while Jayden Turcinovic was the backbone of the middle-order, top scoring with 47. Johnson Park was in a similar position at 2/84 at the tea break, before Matthew Heskes made the breakthrough and it was the Sharks under pressure at 6/120 in the 59th over. Experienced tailender Andrew Gottliebsen joined Cam Bourke and the pair blunted the attack and reeled in the target with four overs to spare. Johnson Park will now play Eildon Park for the first time in a Reeves Shield Grand Final at Eildon Park. Meanwhile, on a sad note, FTGDCA stalwart and Life Member Bryan Mitchell passed away on Friday after a long illness. Bryan was an outstanding wicketkeeper, captaining the association’s country week team in 1950, and was at the helm when Upwey-Tecoma won its first A Grade premiership in 1955, before playing at Footballers and Belgrave
cricket clubs. Bryan later went on to run the association’s tribunal and was the official scorer for the league for many years. He was awarded life membership in 1999. Players from Saturday’s matches observed a minute’s silence and wore black arm bands in respect for a gentleman who will be sadly missed. Semi Finals REEVES SHIELD Eildon Park 1/83 (B. Morris 31, C.
