Angie’s 40, fabulous and out of her ‘comfort zone’ Anniversary of family tragedy
SINGER, actor, TV presenter, model – Angie Hilton’s been a busy whirlwind of celebrity activity for almost two decades. And the young mum of two with ex-Supercats star Braith Cox is showing no signs of slowing down after turning 40 last year. Now she’s juggling television work on What’s Up Downunder with a busy family life and more plans in the pipeline. “It’s my time to keep growing and getting out of my comfort zone and exploring new possibilities, she tells the new edition of Geelong Coast magazine (GC). Those possibilities cover everything from fitness training to renovating her Newtown home with Braith. “I have both kids at school now, so the world’s opening up with a bit of freedom, she says. Angie is just one of the intriguing locals featured in the autumn GC. Local authors, musicians, artists and aid workers – even Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons modelling his flamboyant personal wardrobe – they’re all in the new GC. Local food, wine, fashions and faces are also part and parcel of the region’s premier glossy lifestyle magazine. A product of the Geelong Independent, GC is available from all good local newsagents.
Dad’s road rules push By NOEL MURPHY TAC safety advocate Norm Robinson has lashed out at authorities for failing to curb the road toll on the anniversary of his son’s death at Lovely Banks. The Bannockburn man, who headed an emotional TAC TV campaign after son Luke’s death in 2010, said too many traffic authorities and politicians were reluctant to take more-effective measures to reduce carnage on the roads. “A lot of road safety people are more interested in making themselves viable in their position than tending to road safety, Mr Robinson said. He called for consideration of several TRAGIC: Norm Robinson initiatives to ease the in the TAC campaign’s TV commercial. toll. Mr Robinson suggested changes to speeding fines included granting three warnings before fining drivers caught one to five kilometres an hour over the limit, doubling existing fines for five to 10km/h over, and impounding cars for 30 days if more than 10km/h above. WHO SAYS manners are extinct these days? Politeness is always a virtue and, if you need an example, look no further than the knife-wielding bandit who fled a North Geelong convenience store with a wad of cash on Monday night. The thief robbed the Separation St store after convincing a staff member to unlock the door around 10.30pm. He pulled out a knife and threatened the worker before saying sorry on his way out. And if you’d like to thank him back, he’s Caucasian, about 30 and 175 cm tall with an average build and unshaven. AS WELL as manners, local robbers were also high in the fashion stakes this week - namely the scumbag pictured who knocked over a Newcomb Wespac on Wednesday while dressed in a hot pink hoodie.

Joe Serra described Leary’s passing as very sad news. “We go back a long way. What a great entertainer he was.“ Said Russell William Love: “What a legend he was, they don’t make many like him any more!“
Perhaps it’s a sign of things to come. What with polite pilferers and urbane bandits setting the pace, should we expect more examples of debonaire deadbeats in haute couture extorting our hard-earned? Maybe robbers in ruffs, bandits in Boss, terrors in tutus... VALE Graeme Lear, one of the Geelong region’s best-loved long-time entertainers who has passed to a higher musical calling. Musicians across Geelong this week praised his humour, larrikinism and kindness.
A CURIOUS development this week that might get a certain group of local campaigners up and agitating again cames from the US on the touchy subject of fluoride. New research published in the journal Environmental health identified a strong correlation between water fluoridation and the prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ADHD, in the US. The study’s bound to affect attention over here, too, at least among the region’s anti-fluoridation brigade.

BIGGER crowds and positive feedback for the second Motor City Music Festival have encouraged organisers to rock Geelong again next year, according to the festival’s director. Hugo T Armstrong said the event had gone from strength to strength, so his team would soon start gearing up for another Motor City in 2016. “It was always going to be a three-year plan, this was never going to be a fly-by-night thing,” he said. Crowds were up from 5500 to 7500, the weather was perfect and adding a country twist to the festival’s family day at Geelong Showgrounds appeared to have worked, Mr Armstrong said. “There’s nothing on like this in the Geelong region on that long weekend.” More than 50 bands performed across five stages on
the opening Friday night before blues and tribute acts took over on Saturday and the change of pace to country on Sunday. Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine executive director Roger Grant said the value of the festival was hard to gauge. “These events are really important to Geelong over that long weekend because locals will stay here to go to the festival and they encourage friends to come and visit,’’ Mr Grant said. “We’re always looking for new markets and Hugo is well aware of that. The festival has so many strengths and Hugo and his team put their heart and soul into it.” The Independent is a sponor of Motor City Music Festival.

Fears Newcomb bank robber to strike again By PAUL MILLAR DETECTIVES fear a brazen armed thief who terrified bank staff during a daylight robbery at Newcomb could strike again unless caught. The masked bandit, who was wearing a distinctive pink hooded jumper, covered his face as he entered the Westpac Bank in the heart of a busy shopping complex just before lunchtime on Wednesday. The Armed Crime Squad, which has taken charge of the investigation, revealed to the Independent that the robber pulled out a black handgun and demanded cash.
A terrified staff member forced at gunpoint to hand over cash was a long-time employee of the bank, the squad said. Detectives believed that the gunman could be a local because he knew his way around the area and they were unaware of any indication he had a car waiting. The detectives were also concerned the gunman hit a bank knowing it was equipped with high-tech security and was in an area with plenty of CCTV coverage. “It’s something you do not see much of these days,’’ said the Armed
Crime Squad’s John Elliott. “It’s one out of the box, that’s for sure.” Detective Senior Constable Elliot said police “absolutely” held fears the gunman could strike again. The bandit stuffed the cash into a black backpack before fleeing on foot along Wilsons Rd. Witnesses reported several sightings of him in nearby streets. A Westpac spokeswoman said staff were receiving support and counselling. The branch reopened yesterday with additional staff on hand to help
out, while regional managers were also in attendance. Westpac called in experts to reassess security and the bank passed on CCTV footage to armed crime investigators. “We take security seriously and the safety of staff and customers are our priority,’’ the bank’s spokeswoman said. Nobody was in injured during the robbery. Police described the robber as about 175cm tall, medium build and also wearing a black balaclava, white gloves and dark tracksuit pants.

They said Coles, which recently opened a supermarket in the town, would sponsor free cooking classes for children as part of the event. “Kids will learn about good nutrition and cooking in a fun, entertaining and hands-on cooking class.”
The festival will again host more than 80 exhibitors along with entertainment and activities including celebrity chefs running cooking demonstrations using local produce. “The Artisan Smallgoods Award, in memory of the late renowned smallgoods maker Angel Cardoso, is also a feature of the festival,” the organisers said. “Bring a picnic rug, gather goodies from our stall holders and enjoy a leisurely lunch on the
lawns of the magnificent Pirra Homestead.” The organisers said entry would cost $18 for patrons aged over 18 and parking was free. The festival will be at Pirra Homestead, on Windemere Rd, on 22 March. More information is available at larafoodandwinefestival.com.au and the event’s Facebook page. Mayor fury after told KISS off By NOEL MURPHY A FAILED behind-the-scenes campaign to bring rock giants KISS to Geelong’s Simonds Stadium has drawn a frustrated response from mayor Darryn Lyons. He told the Independent the superstar band from the 1970s and ’80s was almost signed several times but this year’s KISS Australian tour would now visit
capital cities and only one regional city - Newcastle. “It’s disappointing that KISS won’t be performing in Geelong, especially when council had several discussions with the tour promoter,” Cr Lyons said. “We discussed a March date for Simonds Stadium. It’s just disappointing to miss out for the fans and for the city.” KISS publicist Chrissie Camp said promoters talked regularly
to venues across the country but could not elaborate on Geelong’s bid. Cr Lyons said he had talked at length with promoter Andrew McManus about a triple rock program featuring KISS, Alice Cooper and Motley Crew. “It was going to be big and we put in a huge amount of time with Andrew and his people. He was extremely positive. “I’m really disappointed. This
was going to be KISS at Gene Simonds Stadium. “I pulled every trick in the book to get them and I feel let down on behalf of the Geelong community.” Cr Lyons said the ongoing inability of Simonds Stadium to draw major events was a concern, given its financial support from ratepayers and taxpayers. “It’s got to be seriously looked
at - we’re talking hundreds of millions of dollars (invested) in a stadium that’s under-utilised. “I’m hopeful that when the stadium trust with the State Government is formed it will consult with people not just from football but Big Bash cricket and in particular people with an entertainment background. I look forward to meeting with Steve Bracks, who will head the trust, as soon as possible.”
Cr Lyons said State Government must help Geelong secure major events such as KISS. “We lost The Pirates of the Caribbean under the last State Government to Queensland, which gave them tax breaks and incentives to film it there. “If Geelong is to be a major events centre...we have to become major player with football, Big Bash and rock concerts.”
‘Sad’ auxiliary ladies prepare to depart Port’s rotunda Councillor steps By PAUL MILLAR in on pet claims A COMMUNITY group that has produced shorts and T-shirts to forgetful campers for decades will soon lock the doors of its historic Portarlington rotunda base for the last time at the end of the month. Bellarine Community Health Ladies Auxiliary has operated its charity shop for as long as anybody can remember, working in cramped conditions in a building that previously doubled as a weighbridge office and a band rotunda. Margaret Collins, who coordinates the volunteers, believed they had been running the op shop since the 1970s. She admitted to a touch of sadness about leaving the building but said its size presented limitations. The volunteers, about 30, will transfer their operations to sheds behind the local health centre. “It’s a bit sad but we’ve been waiting for it to happen since they refurbished it. It’ll be sad for the people who have been there a lot longer than me,” Ms Collins said. The rotunda opened in August 1910 with the town band belting out tunes to a large crowd. The weighbridge was still operating in 1958.
By NOEL MURPHY
CLOSING: Margaret Collins with the keys to the historic rotunda. 135883 Ms Collins said the quirky building was busy during holiday periods but the auxiliary raised more funds at the sheds. The building, in the heart of the
town and overlooking the bay, has been earmarked to become an information centre. Councillor Lindsay Ellis thanked the auxiliary as long-time custodians
Picture: REG RYAN of the rotunda. “Though their op shop the auxiliary has raised several hundred thousand dollars for the local community,” he said.
GEELONG Animal Welfare Society must take pet owners’ claims more seriously, councillor Kylie Fisher said yesterday. But owners need to register and microchip their animals if they expect easy resolutionS when trying to claim lost pets, she said. City Hall is reviewing its financial support of GAWS while investigating claims it failed to return pets to their rightful owners. The investigation follows recent Independent reports of ownership disputes and successive GAWS annual losses totalling almost $750,000. “Council is definitely investigating some of these accusations (and) the City’s financial support is definitely being reviewed at the same time,” Cr Fisher said. “I can imagine people being very anxious. Pets are a big part of people’s lives and families. “This is why...people need to microchip and register pets.” A new claim of GAWS refusing to return a pet emerged this week, involving a pure-bred dog with a question mark over microchipping and ownership. Cr Fisher urged pet owners to go direct to City Hall with any problems. “There are people in council dealing with these matters. It’s very emotional for people but pet owners need to register and microchip their animals if they expect easy resolution when they try to claim their lost pets.”

New cash ‘not enough’ Labor calls for more handouts THE Abbott Government announced $205,000 for Geelong’s “transition” from automotive jobs the same day state Labor slammed the government’s commitment to the sector as “not enough”. Liberal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said the latest money for IXL Backwell would “help support the manufacturing jobs of the future”. “The funding…will support the manufacture of components for a new generation heating, venting and lighting units as well as other nonautomotive parts,” she said. The money was from a government fund to support workers overcome the loss of automotive jobs in Victoria and South Australia. Backwell IXL has now received more than $1.2 million in government grants over the past three years. “The government is working hard to support
local manufacturing as our economy transitions,” Ms Henderson said. She announced the funding this week as the Government backed away from plans to reduce its $900 million Automotive Transition Scheme. State Industry Minister Lily D’Ambrosio welcomed the decision but said “it’s not enough”. “The Abbott Government must put additional funding into Melbourne’s north and Geelong two of the areas hardest hit by the decline of the automotive industry,” she said. “The Andrews Government will stand up for automotive workers and hold Tony Abbott to account.” Ms D’Ambrosio said the Andrews Government’s commitments to support industrial jobs included an “additional” $18 million for an exist- MORE CASH: Sarah Henderson at this week’s funding ing Geelong Regional Innovation and Investment announcement with Backwell IXL Metal Castings’ Bernard Brussow and John Brancatisano. 135816 Picture: REG RYAN Fund.

Bethany leaders working for kids SERVING and former leaders of Geelong’s Bethany Community Support have been included on a new state committee to help protect vulnerable children. Grant Boyd and ex-chief Aileen Ashford will sit on the ministerial advisory committee, comprising community-sector leaders experienced in working with vulnerable children. Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos said the committee was aimed at strengthening Victoria’s out-of-home care services. The committee’s first task was to recommend strategies on how to recruit more foster carers and retain those already supporting children who have experienced abuse and neglect, she said. Mr Boyd has worked for 30 years in the special education, health and community sectors as a practitioner, consultant and in senior management roles, including at the Department of Human Services. Ms Ashford is a former Commissioner for Children for Tasmania and is now chief executive officer of the Children’s Protection Society.

The First World War was a transformative experience for many women. Opportunities to take on new roles and learn new skills saw these women become ambulance drivers, doctors, farmers and fund-raisers. They travelled the world, from Cairo to the Western Front, from Samoa to Serbia; or they remained at home, ‘doing their bit’ to keep businesses, farms and households afloat while their men served King and country in far away lands.
The Responsible Authority will not decide on the application before: Saturday 28 March, 2015 If you object, the Responsible Authority will advise you of its decision. ‘Two calls’ for bullying hotline By PAUL MILLAR A hotline to report bullying at City of Greater Geelong has had two calls in its first four weeks. But a union official said the number of calls did not indicate the extent of bullying at City Hall. City chief Gillian Miles confirmed the two calls to the “access line“. “Our 2500-plus staff are encouraged to access the line or to use other existing avenues open
Union boss claims staff wary of calling service to them,“ she told the Independent. A City Hall spokesperson said “independent organisation Worklogic operated the phone line. Council has pledged $6000 for the service and $200,000 for an investigation of bullying allegations at City Hall.
Australian Services Union branch secretary Richard Duffy said workers were uncomfortable complaining to a phone service paid by the City. The process could only be truly independent with State Government in control of the investigation, he said. “Sometimes with an internal
investigation they get what they want‌we’re encouraging people to come forward but people are not comfortable with the process. “I think the (responsible) State Government minister should be looking after it.’’ Mr Duffy said three or four council workers would “put pen to paperâ€? after complaining to a
separate union hotline about City Hall bullying. “We’ll then get them in to speak to lawyers and, based on what we’ve got, we could seek a meeting with the State Government. Ms Miles appointed Ernst and Young to lead the bullying investigation.
“Ernst and Young will bring transparency and a wealth of experience to this review, she said. Ms Miles also announced the appointment of former Australian Human Rights Commission commissioner Susan Halliday to advise on the review. “It is important that I receive expert and independent advice and I am confident that this can be achieved by these two appointments, Ms Miles said.

Theatre figure’s awkward award BACK TO BACK Theatre’s Bruce Gladwin admits feeling awkward about his Australia Council Award. The passionate and compassionate artistic director, who has guided an ensemble of Geelong performers with intellectual disabilities since 1999, said the award was unexpected. “It’s a real privilege to work with those in the ensemble; my awkwardness is that the ensemble is not recognised as such. Back to BackUnder has performed in more than 20 countries under Mr Gladwin’s leadership. “I have the best job in Australia at the moment, he said after his acknowledgement for outstanding achievement in theatre. “It’s a new award and it’s a great honour to be recognised by your peers. Mr Gladwin said $50,000 in prize money accompanying the award would allow him to pursue his dreams. “At some time I’ll leave and somebody else will take over and maybe I’ll be able to take some risks that I haven’t taken before. “As an artist you don’t enter this lifestyle with any sense of security.

From page 1 “We lost eight people on the long weekend Luke died on the Labor Day long weekend, Mr Robinson said. “We always have a shocking Labor Day weekend and a horrible Easter - the least we had at Easter was when our TAC campaign was running. “I don’t care whose cages I rattle, we’re still shocking with road safety. “I had a meeting with Daniel Andrews and his idea was to give to learners in high school compulsory off-road driving training but VicRoads reckons we’d just be giving them the tools to go faster. “But Daniel Andrews’ uncle does it with bikes in New South Wales, he’s an ex-road copper, and it works. Mr Robinson floated the ideas – calling for responses from Twitter followers – on the fifth anniversary of Luke’s death. Luke, 19, was speeding when he lost control of a car on Anakie Rd. His three passengers survived the crash but one was seriously injured and the others had minor injuries. The personal stories of Mr Robinson, friends, emergency workers, work colleagues, survivors of the crash, eyewitnesses and others affected by the tragedy formed the basis for the emotional TAC campaign. Mr Robinson also raised the idea of ability-topay fines after reports a European millionaire was fined $76,000 for driving 23km/h over an 80km/h. The figure was calculated on a Finnish system aimed at imposing a supposed level of fairness on speeding fine penalties.

State stops further speed cuts
Limits reduced here, not there By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE GEELONG region is stuck with speed-limit cuts introduced under a program that the Andrews Government halted over “confusion and uncertainty“. The previous government implemented the progressive reduction of 70km/h and 90km/h limits to 60km/h and 80km/h around Victoria, completing most of the Geelong cuts before the order to stop. The cuts were on the advice of Geelong-based Transport Accident Commission (TAC), which says every 5km/h increase in speed above 60km/h doubles the risk of collisions resulting in death. But new Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the speed limit
changes caused community confusion and uncertainty. “On coming to government, Labor is reviewing former coalition policies and this is an example of a policy that created community anxiety unnecessarily and needs to be changed,” Mr Donnellan said. “VicRoads will continue to assess all roads on the basis of the road condition, accident data, volume and type of traffic and feedback from road safety partners and the community.” Mr Donnellan confirmed the government would not reverse any speed limit cuts already applied but would halt any further reductions that had been planned under the axed program. The government would only
reduce limits in the future if safety was an issue, he said. The speed limit cuts are: 90km/h to 80km/h, Bacchus Marsh Rd between Apollo Dve and Patullos Dve; Bellarine Hwy between Moolap and Leopold; Bellarine Hwy at Marcus Hill; Geelong-Portarlington Rd either side of Curlewis Rd; GeelongPortarlington Rd between Drysdale and Portarlington; Hendy Main Rd; Coombes Rd; Lower Duneed Rd; Merrawarp Rd between Barrabool Rd and Barwon River; Barrabool Rd between Ceres Rd and Devon Rd; 70km/h to 60km/h, Station St Norlane; Ash Rd Leopold; Shannon Ave Newtown; Clarendon St Drysdale; Como Rd Leopold; Earls Rd Moolap; Melaluka Rd Leopold.

WE’RE FROM THERE: Germany’s George and Barbara Schwarz join Scotland’s Anne Roy to inspect the You Picture: REG RYAN Are Here exhibition at Geelong’s National Wool Museum. 135767
Here we are, in a wool museum ROADWORK signs, fluoro jackets and safety helmets make for an unusual entry to a showcase of early Geelong but, then, the idea is a city under construction. The National Wool Museum’s You Are Here exhibition of early maps, subdivision plans and images of yesteryear, is a modest but curious peep into the city’s days of yore. A massive hand-painted diorama drafted from the top of the Terminus Hotel by J Stuart Jackson in 1891 shows the city in glorious, axonomatic black and white from Western Beach’s
farthest reaches around 180 degrees to Johnstone Park. It’s contrasted by an 18-metre panorama of the presentday waterfront, electronically stitched together from some 50 colour photos. Subdivision plans and maps advertising land sales at new suburbs such as North Shore, Herne Hill, Manifold Heights and areas such as Buckland’s Paddock in Newtown date to the 19th Century. They’re complemented by parish maps of Geelong going back to 1840, paintings of the same vintage and photos, posters, commercial brochures, aerial images and lithographic prints.
The waterfront panorama is part of a Picture the Coast project covering the entire Australia coastline. “This is a fantastic project as big as Australia itself,” said Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons. “(It’s) an opportunity for Geelong to be part of this project showcasing one of Geelong’s most important features – our iconic waterfront.” School children have been visiting the exhibition, helping with their own construction work projects on the gallery floor, while international visitors have also been encouraged to pinpoint their origins on a large wall map.

Koala cull prompts protection bid ANIMAL activists are campaigning for protection laws following a cull of almost 700 starving koalas at Cape Otway. Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) this week launched a new drive to enact national legislation to safeguard koalas from logging, secret culls and politics. “Why was a cull allowed in Victoria?” AKF boss Deborah Tabart said.
“Because somehow, and by sleight of hand, the Victorian Government escaped the federal (vulnerable species) listing (of koalas) in May 2012. “How did they do that? Why did they do that?” Ms Tabart said a proposed Koala Protection Act would give koalas the highest level of protection of any animal species in Australian history, and probably lead the way for others worldwide.
Come and chat with STEPS and our partner training organisations about how you can enrol now for our upcoming classes in :
“With recent news stories of koalas being impacted by logging and the secret culls in Victoria, it is clear that existing federal legislation is incapable of providing the level of protection needed to save the koala. “The koala has powerful enemies.” Almost 690 starving koalas were euthanased in three separate culls in 2013 and 2014 at Cape Otway, reportedly in secret to avoid a public backlash.

There were lots of beautiful cakes on display showcasing Claire’s talent, and a lovely dining style table from where customers could browse her broad portfolio of cakes. Claire said she used the same cupcake mixture in wedding cakes, with many buyers commenting on how good they tasted. “Everything is home-made from scratch and I use real eggs, flour and butter – we don’t use any pre-mixes.” Sweet Designs by Claire
bakes everything from birthday to wedding and novelty cakes. “I normally open up the shop about 8.30am but during wedding season I can be here until two or three in the morning,” Claire said. She’s been known to make up to eight cakes a weekend, which was “pretty full on”, during the six-month wedding season. Sweet Designs by Claire also makes gingerbread houses, fruit cakes, plum puddings and Pavlovas at Christmas. Happy cake shopping.

DON’T we all love cupcakes? I found some by chance, specifically white chocolate ones that got me with texture and taste so good I’m going back for more – ha-ha. Cupcakes come in all flavours, with lots of smooth, luxurious butter cream on top, so the challenge is choosing your favourite. At a recent charity event I ate a particularly yummy, moist, nottoo-sweet vanilla cupcake and wanted to know who was responsible. I soon tracked down Sweet Designs by Claire. The prices of owner Claire’s beautiful cupcakes start at $3.50. Interestingly, I learned that her parents had been cake bakers for the past 20 years, owning Merles Cakes, which they sold two years ago. Claire followed them into the business a couple of years ago. “Mum basically taught me everything I know”, she said. The first thing I noticed at her shop was the divine smell of cakes baking. Claire makes cakes in white chocolate, chocolate mud, caramel, Jaffa, peppermint, choc caramel, white choc with fresh raspberries, red velvet, marble, carrot, choc raspberry, hummingbird, banana and pineapple, moist fruit cake, and chocolate flourless. Phew! The shop’s theme colours looked fresh and pretty in white and pink.

Honestly, tough guy needs sack
IT’S ONLY young whippersnappers who went to Escalation (Double Take, 6 March). Before Escalation, we old-timers used to soak up the beats of maestro Peter Nell at Valentino’s. The food and the atmosphere were sensational. It was the place to be. Kevin V Russell Geelong

Off with their heads ‘BEWARE of the agapanthus’ is an amusing warning sign to display at a gateway, especially if these showy flowers are in the garden. The big, bushy agapanthus, with its blue or white heads, is ideal for filling up a large space. The blue can be so deep and vibrant and can provide an eye-catching display. However, we really do need to beware of the agapanthus because it is an invasive plant from South Africa that, like compatriots boneseed and gazania, is a menace if it escapes into the bush. The seeds from dead heads in our gardens are eaten and transported around the countryside by birds. This must be avoided. Fortunately, a simple precaution allows the enjoyment of these plants in a garden and also protects our native bushland. As soon as the flowers deteriorate, the heads should be cut off and destroyed so birds cannot feast on them. If this de-heading is carried out conscientiously by responsible gardeners, our native environment will not be invaded. Now is the time to take action. Melva Stott Anglesea

Smarts paying off
Duty to pensioners
MANY Australians have shown they are smart by using historically low home loan interest rates to pay off their mortgages. Roughly 25 per cent of Australians now own their own homes by taking advantage of these unsustainably low interest rates. They are wise. Interest rates will rise again given the right conditions. Perhaps sooner rather than later. Michael J Gamble Belmont
JOE HOCKEY’S statements regarding pensions are possibly misleading. The Australian Government claims it one day might not be able to pay, or have to reduce, pensions. If this is so, then all governments for decades have been remiss in their duty to make provisions for the pensions they need to pay when people retire. This is a constitutional directive that all our governments, past and future, must observe. Although Mr Hockey has claimed that the “age of entitlements” is over, this is not the case. If so, then parliamentary pensions and entitlements must go also. How many retired politicians are in receipt of massive retirement perks? Hundreds and hundreds? Many politicians are immensely rich already, such as Malcolm Turnbull, and many are appointed to lucrative positions on company boards post-retirement. Will any of these already-wealthy individuals do the right thing for the country’s supposedly diminishing coffers and forego these entitlements? I don’t think so. But the main point is that it is government’s duty to, over the decades, have set aside funds for the pensions it must pay. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West
All talkers, no action WHILE not directly advancing Avalon Airport’s and Linfox’s cause to develop what should be a freshfood export hub and Asian tourism regional bonanza, it was nevertheless heartening to note a recent report about “competitive tensions that see Melbourne Airport swoop on Avalon Airport’s every move like a hawk hunting a field mouse”. At last a journalist was prepared to shed light on what retards Avalon achieving its potential and becoming, along with Deakin University and Barwon Health, our pre-eminent regional jobs provider and heavy-lifter. Because of that perception what are our two federal politicians, the Andrews Government and an array of local advocacy groups - G21, Committee for Geelong, City of Greater Geelong’s Enterprise Geelong, Geelong Chamber of Commerce, manufacturing representatives and trades hall – doing about taking care of business while unemployment figures nudge nine per cent locally and double that figure for the youth demographic? Richard Worland Manifold Heights
All Greek to sceptics JUKKA Tuisku’s definition of ‘sceptic’ was only half right (Letters, 6 March). The classical Greek word skeptikos meant ‘thoughtful’, or in English usage ‘reflective’ and ‘inquiring’. The sense of doubt came in through the Greek despair at gaining knowledge through religious revelation and the word of priests and oracles. The more robust, inquiring nature of skeptikos

later became a strand in the empiricist philosophy that underpinned the European Enlightenment and the scientific revolution. In this sense the American Skeptics Society “promotes science literacy and critical thinking and investigates fringe science and paranormal claims“. Critical thinking and scientific method are essential in the search for knowledge, not least in the nature and causes of climate change. Where questions remain unanswered or ignored or obscured or obfuscated, even by so exalted an authority as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, sceptics keep on asking questions. Science demands it. Tim Saclier Leopold
Pause for thought JUKKA Tuisku said that a “sceptic who was unconvinced that global warming was caused by human emissions would conclude that action needs to be taken”. Global warming of any statistical significance stopped about 15 to 18 years ago, so why is there a need for any action to be taken? Even the director of NASA’s GISS climate unit, Gavin Schmidt, acknowledges the pause. Remember that the UN’s International Panel on Climate Change has a target of limiting global temperature increase by no more than 2C before the end of the century. The pause is a major embarrassment for global warmists and they desperately want it to end. Peter Rees Bell Park
‘Stupid’ to even ask TO ALL the global warming deniers, and notably Tim Saclier (Letters, 27 February), I again ask them which part of the science that predicts calamitous human induced warming of our planet do they not accept. Do they not concede that carbon dioxide (CO2) has been increasing in the atmosphere since the industrial revolution? Do they not understand that CO2 and other greenhouse gases allow high wavelength radiation radiated from the Sun to reach Earth’s surface? Do they also not appreciate that these same gases will retard the lower wavelength radiation emitted from Earth’s surface from escaping into space, resulting in a net temperature increase? It is not rocket science – even the “stupid” should be able to see that. Don Bartlett Indented Head

WHEN I left school I began working in factories amid loud machinery and, for fun, I played piano in bands three nights weekly without considering the damage to my ears. Eventually I started havingtrouble understanding conversations and noticing high notes on the piano were disappearing. I started lip-reading, trying to piece stories together from the words I could recognise. I eventually had a series oftests and stopped playing

well the noise compression works. I was out with friends for dinner at a very noisy restaurant recently and was able to understand multiple conversations, which I think was due to the directional microphones following where I was looking and the computer doing all the background noise-cancelling to make my dinner out a very enjoyable experience. My previous hearing aids could cancel out background noise but were less clear and accurate. I’ve also noticed a big change when listening to radio in my car. The Alta Pro devices seem to pick out the announcer’s voice from the mix of car engine and road noise. Marcel has tailored a specific music program for my Alta Pros, allowing me to hear high notes on the piano again. I can now enjoy conversations with family and friends, watch movies, TV, listen to music and enjoy life again. Anyone with hearing problems should contact Marcel at Hearing Aid Specialists to enjoy life again, too.

ACHTUNG BABY U2 Tribute Show
Zeppelin lands for city tribute By NOEL MURPHY THE BIGGEST rock band of the 1970s was never one for a lack of excesses. Private jets with their own fireplaces, hard drugs, wild parties, under-age groupies, even dabbling in the occult – few sins were left unattributed to ultraloud, heavy metal rock-blues-folk outfit Led Zeppelin. When the first of rock’s supergroups reformed for a one-off concert in 2007, tickets fetched thousands and set a Guinness Book of World Records listing for the greatest concert demand, with 20 million requests. Vocalist Robert Plant has resisted lead guitarist Jimmy Page’s repeated attempts to reform the band, making the prospects of ever hearing Led Zeppelin live
again miniscule – and making a tribute show in Geelong next week an essential ticket for rusted-on Zeppelin fans. But Whole Lotta Love – Led Zeppelin Celebration is not just any tribute. With vocalists Jack Jones, Amy Findlay, Jimmy Cupples, Frank Lakoudis and Shay Liza joined by a nine-piece band and string section – not to mention big-screen visuals – the threehour tribute travels through the back catalogue of the biggest band in rock history. Australian music historian Glenn A. Baker said “rock tributes don’t get any better”, while BEAT magazine’s Christie Eliezer wrote “the performers’ sheer love for the music is what makes this concert so special”.
The show debuted in Sydney in 2003 before touring nationally, featuring Led Zeppelin hits such as Rock and Roll, Kashmir, the Rain Song, Moby Dick, Ramble On, Stairway to Heaven, No Quarter, Battle of Evermore, and Immigrant Song. Established in 1968, Led Zeppelin produced nine studio and three live albums, selling 300plus million worldwide. Geelong’s Joseph Calderazzo is the creative director and a guitarist for Whole Lotta Love after starting the show at Sydney’s Iguana Bar in Kings Cross with “a couple of violins, a viola and a couple of cellos”. Geelong Performing Arts Centre hosts Whole Lotta Love – Led Zeppelin Celebration on 20 March.

BEAT BOY: Former DJ Peter Nell is back behind the decks and donning headphones for Escalation Reunion II. Picture: REG RYAN
Escos all go-go gathering that sold-out last year. Other Escalation DJs on the bill included Peter Nell, John Coppola, Murray Costoso, John Rosani and Nick Yalizis. “I’ve been inundated with enquiries for ticket sales since the event was announced via Facebook in early January,” Volpe said. “There are people making the trip from New South Wales, Queensland and even Perth to attend the night. It’s good to see that the old nightclub still means so much to people after all these years.” Volpe said other DJs set to play the reunion included Patrizio
Adamo, Paul Schroeter and Chasers’ Deejay Samstar. Volpe said the new owners had gutted the club “to bring back some class and sophistication”. “After completing the extensive renovation they are graciously allowing Escalation patrons an exclusive first look at the new St James Bar and Nightclub before its official grand opening.” Volpe said the reunion would include memorabilia giveaways, a $500 prize for best costume and “a couple of hundred familiar faces”. Anyone wanting tickets could phone him on 0417 317 808, he said.

THE LITTLE River Hotel might be under new ownership but the country-style venue with its charming atmosphere and oldfashioned friendly service remains. No surprise really, as new owner Kylie Trotter worked at the hotel as weekend manager, so she knows what patrons want from their watering hole. The hidden gem is set on an acre of land, so children have plenty of play space – there’s even a park across the road – while families enjoy the childfriendly setting indoors. MATTHEW Flinders Girls Secondary College, located in the heart of Geelong, aspires to the practices of earth-care, peoplecare and fair share. Long recognised as an innovative, supportive, inclusive and affordable learning environment, the college is about to launch an exciting new project. The Living Garden, being developed on an under-utilised concrete tennis court on the school grounds, is aimed at further strengthening the links between the school and the wider community. Students, local businesses and residents will be encouraged to have plots in the garden, which will be wheel chair accessible and open outside of school hours. The garden will be a place to grow, gather, share and reflect. Produce from the garden grown by students at the college will be shared with people in the City of Greater Geelong who would benefit most from fresh organic produce. College principal, Michelle Crofts says the school hopes the Living Garden will be the space for many community events including music events, food swaps and a farmers’ market. Every Day is “Open Day” Students learn how to grow food sustainably in the Enviro Garden. “The real learning is in understanding the problems and experimenting with possible solutions, using burgeoning technology such as 3D printing and robotics. These are just a few examples of learning at the College.” Research suggests that most students at school now will work in jobs that don’t currently exist,
will live and work in three different countries and have about six career changes. Geelong College holds it’s open day on 18 March, when prospective families can meet Mr Barr and teaching staff, and experience the college, classes and activities guided by students.

YOUNG people need to be confident, curious, resilient and empathetic to lead in their ever-changing world, says Geelong College principal Andrew Barr. “At Geelong College our young people learn to become independent global citizens,” Mr Barr says. “We understand that the most important aspect of a modern education is learning how to learn.” Mr Barr says key capabilities such as creativity, deep thinking and a heart for service to others will help make a positive contribution to a changing global society. “These capabilities are being integrated into subjects, projects, co-curricular opportunities and experiences as a part of our Vision for Learning and enable a deeper and richer understanding,” he explains. “Students experience immersions in Enviro (year four), Designing the Future (year five) and Media (year nine) where core subjects are learned and communicated through hands on themed projects. “Designing the Future, a new program, sees year five students tackling real-world problems with craftsmanship and design.

Sacred Heart College has programs to smooth over the transition between primary and secondary school.
Sacred Heart’s smooth move TRANSITION starts with an ending and finishes with a beginning. One of the biggest transitions students can make is the end of primary and the beginning of secondary school. Recognising it can be a daunting time for some, Sacred Heart College has an innovative transition program to help new students feel comfortable and happy. The program avoids rushing students through the transition period, instead gradually introducing them to the different aspects of their new school.
Open Day Tuesday 24 March
While completing year six at the start of term four, all girls receive their Sacred Heart College username and password, so they can explore the college’s intranet. During the same term most girls also receive a visit to their primary school from a Sacred Heart teacher. Sacred Heart also offers additional orientation programs such as Jumpstart and Solo Flyers, both of which are for girls who might need extra support and preparation before starting year seven. Orientation day in December
provides students with a glimpse of college life, including meeting their homeroom teacher and classmates. Orientation continues on the first day without set lessons, with the girls given time in following days to familiarise themselves with the school so they are prepared for the beginning of their normal timetables. The orientation program at Sacred Heart provides the opportunity for the girls to have a smooth transition from primary to secondary school.
Tours: 4pm and 5pm Information sessions: 5.30 and 6.30pm
We invite you to join us to see what Sacred Heart College has to ofer your daughter. Accepting enrolments for Years 7 to 12. 1176340-KC11-15

CLONARD COLLEGE Clonard invests in excellence CLONARD College has its roots buried deeply in the Brigidine traditions of strength and kindliness - a joyous celebration of learning and collegiality. The college holds dear the belief that all students are blessed with gifts and that it's the responsibility of education to enable and promote their giftedness. From an initial cohort of 40 in 1956, the college has undergone significant change in its size, infrastructure and curriculum. However, what remains static is the sense of peace and oneness that pervades the college, palpable to all who visit our school. Now accommodating 835 students, Clonard boasts a broad range of learning pathways to enable all students to enjoy success during their secondary years. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, particularly through the middle and senior years to enable them to segue easily into tertiary education or work placement. Clonards offers a comprehensive range of VCE subjects and alternate year 12 studies including VCAL and VET. The school has undergone a physical transfor-

While Clonard has doubled its size the student body has increased only minimally so the pastoral atmosphere of the school is maintained and students can enjoy the reflective, sporting and social spaces around the school. These new learning spaces represent our investment in student physical well-being as well as spiritual and academic development.
Focus on collaborative learning STUDENTS work collaboratively as equals and develop interactive, life-long learning skill while engaging intellectually and spiritually at Saint Ignatius College. They are challenged to become resourceful, resilient, independent and to be “women and men for others. They have many opportunities to contribute to college life and the wider community, and to develop as teammates, collaborators, facilitators and leaders. The college’s new Xavier Centre, a year seven and eight precinct, adds to the many outstanding learning spaces, accommodating recent growth in student numbers to over 1100. An enriching, broad academic curriculum is delivered with the latest educational technologies, a laptop program for all students across the college, pastoral care and a variety of co-curricular activities. Integral to a Jesuit Catholic education are opportunities to develop leadership, to contribute to local and overseas community service and social justice programs and to engage in immersion experiences in language and culture. The college also has 73 teams competing in 22 sports. The vibrant performing arts program enables

“When customers drive feel satisfied and safe, knowing that top-class mechanics have been working on their vehicles.” Twice named apprentice of the year, Joe says the 12-month, 20,000-kilometre national Repco warranty also gives customers peace of mind. “That warranty allows them to go to any Repco service centre around the country if they’re experiencing any problems,” he says. Experienced mechanics at Joe’s VACC workshop specialise in Toyota, Holden, Ford and Mazda. The crew services new vehicles and others under warranty while also being equipped to carry out general repair work. The depot also uses the highly acclaimed Hunter Hawkeye wheel-alignment system. “This is top of the range equipment, with highresolution cameras providing measurements that guarantee pinpoint accuracy,” Joe says. Conveniently situated in the heart of Geelong West and, the automotive centre only opened in February but already has a growing list of customers attracted to the business through the recommendation of satisfied clients.

IndySport Warriors get the Blues after narrow loss to Knights On the
bite
By JOSIP ZILIC AN OPPORTUNISTIC goal in the 72nd minute from Melbourne Knights striker Andrew Barisic has denied North Geelong Warriors its second win of the NPL season. Falling backward, Barisic lunged out his right foot to ricochet off Darren Lewis and put the ball out of Daniel Zilic’s reach to trickle over the line. In front of a large crowd, both sides cautiously approached the first 15 minutes before opening up to probe their way for clear chances. The Warriors’ first real chance came at 20 minutes when Michael Anderson charged through toward the goal area before threading a ball for Juso Julardzija only for the shot to slice wide. Soon after midweek hero Robbie Zadworny was on hand after some nice link-up play between Vito Cichello and Mark Paleka but his shot was off-cue. The Knights wrestled control after the 30-minute mark and almost capitalised when Barisic ran through onto a delightful ball to power home. However, Zilic in goals was up to the task and held on. The second half was a mirror image of the first, both teams happy to patiently build up before hitting their straps. After the 60-minute mark the Knights looked to have sensed that the midweek clash had taken a toll on the Warriors and had a series of forays toward goal. In an attempt to change things up, Warriors coach Micky Colina sent in Reardo Luka for Paleka on 70 minutes. However, two minutes later the Knights had the only goal on the board thanks to Barisic’s lunging effort. Again looking to the subs, Colina introduced Nikola Jurkovic and the Warriors mounted a 10-minute patch peppering the Knights defence. Chances fell to Julardzija, Luka and Zadworny but all were unable to stretch Chris May enough to notch up an equaliser. After the match Colina was empathetic toward his players. “The lads gave everything and are disappointed,” he said.

with zero points today hurts.” The Warriors next match is at home in the national competition of
the Westfield FFA Cup round four, taking on Mannigham Blues at home on Saturday. Kick-off is 2pm.
Cats fall in final stand as local season settles WITH the First XI not in the finals this season, Gelong Cricket Club’s Third XI flew the flag for the Kardinia Park boys only to fall at the first hurdle. Bowling first last Saturday after winning the toss, the Cats struggled to make inroads as St Kilda racked up an imposing total of 297. In reply, Geelong was never in the hunt, managing a paltry 64 all-out. This summed a season to forget for the entire club but the winter months will bring a new coach and a fresh chance to get back to the top where the Cats belong. In Geelong Cricket Association, the home-andaway season was settled. Six clubs were left to lick their wounds and prepare for next season, six will firmly have their eye on the silverware up for grabs. East Belmont topped the table and will take on Grovedale at Stinton Oval this weekend. The Lions have won both encounters between the two this season and will go in heavy favourite tomorrow. North Geelong, which finished closely behind in second, will play St Josephs at Winter Reserve. While North has had an exceptional season and the Joeys have struggled for consistency, the loss of Jake Thorne to a finger injury and the quality of St Joseph’s line up makes the winner almost impossible to pick. Expect St Joseph’s to lift on the big stage and
Local
cricket Jim Timberlake
show its true colours. And the third game will be played at Osborne Park between Geelong City and South Barwon. Both will be sweating on the availability of key players, with City star Richard Oliver spending time recently on a pre-season camp for his English county side, while Swans skipper Joel Davies appears likely to miss after receiving a yellow card last week, his second for the season and resulting in an automatic suspension. If neither plays, South will go in favourite thanks to the greater depth of its squad. In division two, Thomson took out the minor premiership and will take on St Peter’s at Marshall tomorrow. The Tigers have been in solid recent form but St Peter’s, which dominated pre-Christmas before losing a few games on the trot, appears to be regaining form just when it matters most. This will be a cracking contest but Thomson has a better list and finished top for a reason.
Modewarre plays Highton at St Peter’s in an intriguing contest. Both sides have snuck under the radar somewhat but possess enough match-winners to beat anyone on their day. Meyrick Buchanan failing to qualify for Highton might give Modewarre the upper-hand. In the final game, Torquay plays Marshall at Jarvis Oval. Torquay has had a solid season and will go in favourite against a young Marshall side that at times has been brilliant but lacks consistency. And in division three, while Shelford finished top and will start as favourite for both this week’s games against Winchelsea and the flag itself, plenty of teams have genuine claims of their own. Bannockburn will take on Meredith at Shelford Oval. Meredith has on paper the line-up to trouble any side but rarely puts it all together at once. For the Tigers it’s time to stand up after years of struggling to match it when it counts. Finally, Teesdale plays Inverleigh at Lethbridge. While Inverleigh has plenty of players capable of lifting on the big stage, Teesdale knows how to get the job done at this time of year and should get the chocolates.
SOME of the best snapper of the season were caught over the past week. Graeme Spence capitalised on ideal conditions at Portarlington to make an early start in the deeper water. Soon after his rod buckled over with a healthy 8.5kg, 90cm fish that took a pilchard. Simon Spence put in time fishing for snapper at the White Lady off St Leonards. He had already enjoyed plenty of success on flathead and whiting but the snapper had eluded him until he boated a trophy fish of 10kg and nearly 1metre in length on his whiting rod. Anglers who made early starts off Clifton Springs were rewarded with respectable sized squid to 1kg. Size three jigs in natural colours were best, with anglers pushing out to some off the deeper weed beds finding the biggest squid. Corio Bay remained hot for flathead, with many anglers landing fish to 55cm. Casting soft plastics such as Gulp Turtleback worms in Pumpkin Green did the trick. The odd larger pinkie snapper to 50cm was taken as a welcome by-catch. Pike were taken on lures cast from North Shore rocks. Anglers who fished the last two hours of the day reported the best results. The Rip held reasonable numbers of kingfish to 6kg. Jigging with green or blue knife jigs from 180g to 250g was still the way to go. Australian salmon were also breaking the surfacing in feeding frenzies, with anglers lucky enough to be in the right spot at the right time taking fish by casting metal lures into the commotion. Some of the salmon have been absolute barrels, pushing 2.5kg. Daniel Baden and I ventured offshore from Barwon Heads on Sunday morning in search of kingfish. It was not until mid-afternoon that we were able to track down a school of surface-feeding kings that were more than willing to take Slugo and Gulp plastics rigged on heavy jig heads to reach down deep under the salmon. During a frantic session in less-than-ideal conditions we boated four kingfish to 65cm and dropped some much larger models that took us by surprise. Other anglers fishing offshore from Barwon Heads found good numbers of flathead and the odd snapper while drifting baits in 40m. The Barwon River estuary remained productive for juvenile mulloway. Anglers fishing well into the night enjoyed the best results. On the freshwater front, the Barwon River around Queen’s Park produced carp to 5kg. Casting small hard-body lures such as Atomic Shads around the weed beds produced redfin to 35cm. Eric Box travelled to Lake Toolondo where he battled strong winds to set out his mudeye under floats. Over two days he caught four trout to 1.8kg and thee redfin. Over the next week, chasing surprisingly large snapper should be worthwhile, especially around first or last light with pilchards. Otherwise, try for kingfish either in The Rip or offshore from Barwon Heads on jigs or soft plastics. Freshwater enthusiasts should try casting lures over the weeds around dawn at Lake Purrumbete. Send Send reports and photos to Chris at info@raylongtackle.com.au.
