“We’re also advocating to VicRoads for better crossings on the trails,” Mr Baimbridge said. “We’re aware of what needs to be done and are working to try and achieve it.” The trail follows the path of the historical railway line through the Yarra Valley, starting behind Lilydale railway station and finishing in the Warburton township. a good, long while about the need for more toilets, but we haven’t got anywhere yet,” he said. Yarra Ranges Council’s executive officer of Recreation and Active Living, Ben Baimbridge, said council was in the process of designing and installing a public toilet on the trail in Woori Yallock this year. Mr Baimbridge said that five Visitor Nodes were also being established along the trail, with water bubblers for trail users, as well as improved signage to “improve the experience” for all users.

down the number of people who used the trail annually, he believed over 200,000 people used the iconic 39-kilometre recreation trail every year, with numbers only going up. Mr Wallens said the issue of access to toilets and water was serious, with a 25-kilometre stretch between Millgrove and Mount Evelyn not immediately serviced with toilets. Without access to the toilets in some areas, Mr Wallens said that users were left stranded if nature called. “We’ve been talking to council for

flow of traffic; passing on the right and using audible warnings, such as bells; and planning trips, to know where toilets and bins are located. Mr Wallens echoed these tips, and said it was important for cyclists to not use the trail as a “training track”, and to travel at appropriate speeds near pedestrians and other users. “There is also quite an onus on pedestrians to realise that it’s a multi-use path and to be a bit careful in terms of wandering all over it,” he said. THE Friends of the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail group is imploring users of the trail to display a greater level of ‘trail etiquette’. As the cooler autumn weather hits the region, greater numbers of walkers, cyclists and horse-riders have hit the iconic trail to enjoy the beautiful surrounds. Unfortunately, there have been increased reports of the public using the trail without abiding by common-sense trail etiquette. Examples include alerting other users to your presence and not running on the middle of the track. It has also become apparent that people haven’t been using nearby toilet facilities before hitting the trail. In recent months, this has become problematic for those entrusted with ensuring the pathways and nearby areas are kept clean. Member of the Friends group, Phil Wallens, told the Mail that it was a “difficult situation” on the trail, with cyclists and pedestrians ignoring proper etiquette and risking accidents. Mr Wallens gave examples of cyclists travelling at great speeds along the track and failing to slow down or use their bell around pedestrians, as well as pedestrians and trail-users not keeping to the left. He said that, despite walking dogs off-lead being prohibited, users had been letting their dogs roam freely on the path, which posed risks to cyclists, pedestrians and other dogs. In response to these reports, Yarra Ranges Council is preparing a pamphlet and other methods of communication to help improve trail etiquette. These include being respectful to everyone on the trail; sticking to the left-hand side and checking before crossing the trail; not blocking the

No service to 2G mobiles By KATH GANNAWAY TELSTRA is investigating the cause of problems with mobile phone access in Yarra Junction over the past two weeks. A number of people contacted the Mail concerned that they were unable to get service on older model mobiles in the Yarra Junction and Warburton areas, as they could get no explanation from the service providers. A Telstra spokesman confirmed that the problem was with supply of power to the Yarra Junction mobile site, resulting in a loss of 2G mobile coverage.

Pensioner John Sykes from Yarra Junction said he was concerned that Telstra might have been looking at taking 2G connections off the tower. “I am very happy with my older phone and don’t need anything more,” he said. “I have health issues and as I no longer have a land line, having a reliable service on my mobile phone is not a luxury, it’s something I need to keep in contact. “It’s my only means of communication to contact my daughter, if I’m feeling unwell.” The disruption to the ser-

vice also affected the Yarra Junction Newsagency with one of their older EFTPOS machines off line. Alex Deans in Warburton was also experiencing a loss of reception, saying he had always been able to get one bar on his older phones, but had lost that two weeks ago. The Telstra spokesman said technicians had restored the service on Friday after power to the site was recovered. “The cause of the power issue is still being investigated, but services remain stable and heightened monitoring of the site remains in place,” he said.

ECLC back in the black HEALESVILLE’S Eastern Community Legal Centre (ECLC) was given a life-saving birthday present last week, with cut federal funds re-instated to stave off closure. At the CLC office’s first birthday celebration in Healesville on Thursday 12 March, Casey MP Tony Smith announced that the centre would have its two-year $400,000 funding grant reinstated. The announcement came near crunch-time for the centre, with ECLC CEO Michael Smith telling the Mail earlier this year that, due to a lack of funding, it was possible the Healesville office might close. Healesville’s CLC has provided over 300 people living with family violence or homelessness with free legal advice in the year since it opened its doors. The funding was originally cut from ECLC’s budget in June 2014, despite being promised when the centre was es-

tablished, leaving uncertainty about whether the office could continue running. Mr Smith, who has been vocal against the funding cuts, welcomed the announcement and said the “voices of the community” had been heard by the government. “We are overjoyed by the decision and this funding will ensure the Yarra Ranges CLC has a firm foundation for the future,” he said. Before the Healesville office opened, residents were only able to utilise ECLC’s free legal advice through outreach programs, which ran around once a month, or by visiting the organisation’s Boronia office, 40 kilometres away. Mr Smith said that, though the centre had only been running for a year, it had been widely embraced by the community, and thanked Mr Smith for campaigning for the centre in parliament. “Tony Smith has really understood the vital work of the

Community Legal Centre, particularly for women and children escaping family violence and families a long way from urban services,” Mr Smith said. “He has clearly been advocating strongly in Canberra, and we really thank him for this great achievement for our community.” MP Tony Smith said he had been in regular contact with Michael Smith and had been regularly highlighting the importance of the Healesville ECLC office to Attorney-General George Brandis. He said the returned money would help ECLC to develop and pilot new programs to help victims of domestic violence, educate the community and engage with other service providers helping vulnerable people in the community. “Outcomes and learnings from the pilot programs at Healesville will be a valuable input to other services across Australia in the future,” Tony Smith said.

close affinity with the region. Up until only a few years ago, Maxwell was still living with his parents in South Belgrave, despite a million-dollar contract in the Indian Premier League. Of course, this was probably due to the fact he was travelling the globe extensively with his cricket. Nevertheless, he is still the pride of the Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association. Maxwell’s journey to superstardom seems to be following the path of fellow hyperactive batsman, David Warner. Like Maxwell, Warner burst onto the international scene through some whirlwind batting displays in Twenty20 cricket. Then, it wasn’t long before he became more than a one-hit wonder, establishing himself in the one-day and then Test teams. The region should be right behind Maxwell in the remaining weeks of the World Cup. Who knows, maybe if Australia achieves World Cup glory once again, we might see a visit from Maxwell and the Cup to this region?

IT SEEMS to be slipping by quietly that this region could soon be home to one of the brightest sporting stars in the country. Slowly but surely, Belgrave-raised Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell is taking the next step to becoming one of the most potent allrounders in world cricket. Only weeks after taking home the Twenty20 Player of the Year award at the Allan Border Medal, Maxwell’s century against Sri Lanka last weekend showed his new maturity could be a factor at this year’s World Cup. While it’s fair to say he didn’t take much time to get his eye in, and while there were plenty of his trademark reverse sweeps, there was method to the way he attacked the bowlers. Simply, he crunched the ball to where the fielders weren’t. This is a luxury only afforded by those who have an elite game. Maxwell played his junior cricket for South Belgrave, where he no doubt learnt his trade from many fine cricketing mentors in the hills. Also, Maxwell seems to have retained a

POLICE are calling on the public for help to locate a Boronia girl who has been missing since Monday 2 March. Nine-year-old Aerodyne Handley went to Boronia railway station after separating from a group of people she was with at Boronia around 11.20am on the Monday. Her movements after that are unknown. At a police briefing on Friday, Acting Sergeant David Price said there were concerns for Aerodyne’s welfare. Anyone who knows of Aerodyne’s whereabouts, or who has other information, is asked to phone triple-zero immediately.

Make Anzac connections By KATH GANNAWAY THERE are commemorations, and there are memorials. Then there are connections. It was connections that Chair of the Victorian Anzac Centenary Committee, former Victorian Premier, Ted Baillieu, wanted to talk about at Warburton last week. Mr Baillieu was guest speaker at the annual Warburton RSL President’s Dinner held at the bowls club on Friday night, 13 March. Stopping for a photo at the impressive ‘Poppy’ memorial that is Warburton’s contribution to the Anzac Centenary commemorations, he congratulated the RSL and the community for their work and the creation of a beautiful memorial in the town. But lasting impressions, he said later, came from connections made between people, particularly young people, and the young men and women who left Australia’s shores to fight in distant places in World War I. “Most people cannot remember the other anniversaries,” he said, quizzing the more than 80 people who supported the RSL’s fund-raising dinner. “We are now into the centenary and one of our missions is to make sure that the next generation, and the generation after that, understand what this is all about,” he said.

Making connections - Anzac Centenary committee chair Ted Baillieu, centre, with Warburton RSL president, Jamie Thomas, left, and Mount Evelyn military historian, Anthony McAleer at the dinner. 136155 “We have an understanding that previous commemorations were actively undertaken, but not remembered, so we need to do this in a way that kids today, in 50 years’ time, will remember.” A slide show revealed first the history of WWI, then the connections already made. “This is not about events and memorials, it’s about the power of place,” he said, drawing people in the room into a brave new world of information technology that can facilitate those connections. “Yes, family connections are legitimate, but they’re so much harder to keep. The power of place is what it’s about,” he said, exciting at least a couple of generations to the possibilities. Among a raft of websites that can help make those connections is Summary and Fate - The AIF Project where anyone can search by name, regimental unit and streets and suburbs to find, for instance, how many

people from a particular town, or street, left Australia to fight for the Mother Country. Information on the site includes embarkation records with details such as the name, age, marital status, the date, place of and address at enlistment, their trade and next of kin, where they went, what happened to them along the way and more. “Don’t do this yourself,” Mr Baillieu said to a crowd who were obviously keen to tap into their computers. “Tell your kids, your grandkids that you don’t understand ... can’t do this, and give them the thread,” he said encouraging everyone to delegate to the younger generations of their family or school. “I know this works,” he said. “Kids come back thrilled; at least six inches taller, when they have something to give you.” The site is www.aif.adfa. edu.au/search.

A HERITAGE Overlay proposal was passed by Yarra Ranges councillors last week, despite concerns from one councillor that the process was unfair on residents. Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme Amendment C131 Healesville Heritage Study, which was proposed last year, was passed by a majority of Yarra Ranges councillors at their 10 March meeting. The overlay affects two ‘precincts’ - one in Nicholson Street (Maroondah Highway) and another in Symons Street - along with several individual properties throughout the town. Last week’s council meeting was one of the final steps for the overlay, which has been in various stages of consultation for the past year, with the council to submit the amendment to the Planning Minister for approval. Deputy mayor Jason Callanan and O’Shannassy Ward councillor Jim Child both sup-

By PETER DOUGLAS AFTER the severe storms that hit the region on 28 February, Yarra Ranges has applied for National Disaster funding to help speed up the clean-up operation. As it stands, council expects the clean-up to take at least a month. The devastating storm left a trail of destruction around the Yarra Ranges, with council fielding hundreds of calls for assistance.

ported the motion to pass the amendment at the meeting. Cr Child said the matter had been extensively discussed with residents, both through council consultation and an independent panel hearing in October last year. The panel’s report, released to council in November, detailed discussions on each of the properties affected and responded to landowner concerns. The most notable concerns from the 24 resident submissions were that the overlay could negatively impact property values and restrict further development of buildings. However, the council noted in the Panel Report that the majority of properties are located in Neighbourhood Residential Zones - areas intended for minimal further development - but said that all applications would be considered on its merits. The council also referenced a Heritage Victoria study from 2001 which concluded that,

generally speaking, the Heritage Overlay did not affect property values. Chirnside Ward councillor Andrew Witlox opposed the proposal and said he did not like the way the discussions had been conducted. Cr Witlox criticised the consultation for the overlay as not being fair on owners, who were not able to opt-out from the overlay and had to request that their properties be removed after the fact. Walling Ward councillor Len Cox said that he understood Cr Witlox’s position, but said the overlay was necessary to maintain historically significant buildings in the town. All present councillors, with the exception of Cr Witlox, voted in favour of passing the amendment. Ryrie Ward councillor Fiona McAllister was not present at the meeting to speak or vote. To add to the hefty clean-up task, the recent storm had followed on from two others, on 13 and 14 February. These had also caused significant damage to roads in the Dandenong Ranges. Yarra Ranges Director of Environment and Engineering, Mark Varmalis, said the scope of the clean-up operation should not be underestimated. “Cardinia Reservoir received 87mm of rain during this (recent) storm, which damaged roads around the hills, includ-

ing at Menzies Creek, Selby, The Patch and Kallista,” he said. “Road surface was washed off, debris built up and there were blocked drains and culverts. “There were also minor land-slips and a major landslip in Gordon Grove, Menzies Creek.” The storm also resulted in the tragic death of Eli Marnock, 2, from The Patch after a large gumtree fell on his family’s home.

Ms Hamilton said. FITTINGLY, the family of Eli Marnock lit sparklers at his funeral on Saturday to remember the little boy who lit up the lives of so many. Hundreds gathered at the Discovery Church in Mount Evelyn on Saturday 16 March to farewell Eli, who died two weeks ago when a tree fell on the room where he was sleeping at the family’s The Patch home. Yet the tragic circumstances of his death were not the focus as his family was joined by hundreds of friends, members of the Patch community and emergency services personnel to say a final goodbye. Supported by each other and showing remarkable poise, Eli’s parents were first to share memories of the two years they spent with their precious little boy. Eli’s father, Stefan Marnock, remembered Eli for his big beautiful eyes, smile and infectious laughter. He said he had a knack of making his way into everyone’s lives and hearts, especially his brothers and sisters, and how he became his grandad’s little shadow. Eli’s mother, Suzie, spoke of buying Eli a water pistol, saying that “no-one was safe from his aim. “But then came that cheeky smile, and once again, he got away with it, she said. Bravely, Eli’s eldest sister Jackie, spoke of the special connection shared between sister and brother. Jackie was first to hear “I love you from Eli and shared cheeky memories like Eli sneaking sips of her Pepsi or taking food from everyone’s plates. “Eli, my gorgeous boy, no words can describe my endless love for you. You’ll always be my favourite, she said. “Darling boy, two years was nowhere near enough. It’s just not fair. “If life was measured by love, you would have lived forever. In what was a heart-wrenching expression of grief, Jackie then picked up sister Nicola, 5, for her final goodbye to her little brother and best buddy. “I wish we lived in the city so we wouldn’t have to die. “And I wish Eli had stayed alive. “This is for Eli, she said, holding up a picture she had drawn. Stefan spoke on behalf of Eli’s brothers, Blake and Jesse. Jesse shared special memories of going out into the garden with Eli to pick two cumquats, one to eat and one to throw. Blake told Eli: “I will miss you forever. Named Eli Ian after his “grandfather in heaven, Eli’s grandparents Sue, John and Glenys, along with the rest of his family said it brought comfort that the two were now together. After the service, those present released balloons into the sunny blue skies in memory of Eli - the little boy who brought sparkle to their lives.

Cash flows in By JESSE GRAHAM SIX members of the Toolangi Fire Brigade went under the razor over the weekend to raise thousands for cancer sufferers. Adrian Lewis, Nicola Rose, Ben Rose, Dawn Hartog, Bruce McClements and Jack Walhout had their hair either coloured or sheared off on Sunday 15 March as part of the World’s Greatest Shave. The group was joined by about 30 community members, who came along to support the brigade members as hairdresser Amanda Webber set to work. Ms Rose told the Mail that, as of Monday 16 March, the group had raised over $7800, with donation pledges still to come in. She said she was stunned by the generosity of residents and friends’ donations to their campaign, and that the brigade was happy to throw their support behind the World’s Greatest Shave. Ms Rose thanked the community, which, she said, was quick to rally behind important causes. “Everyone was so generous with their donations - I think it’s

because most people have either known somebody who has been battling cancer or has battled it themselves,” Ms Rose said. “Even though the World’s Greatest Shave is for blood cancers, knowing people who have had breast cancer, ovarian cancer or skin cancer, people are touched by it and they want to do something to help.” Ms Rose said she was getting used to her clean-shaven head, though her kids were taking longer to become accustomed to it. She said that she donated her hair to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths campaign, which used donated hair to make wigs for people undergoing cancer treatments. Hair donated to the campaign must be at least 20cm in length. For more information on the World’s Greatest Shave, visit www.worldsgreatestshave.com. Tamara also reported feeling it from Mount Evelyn, as did Margaret from Woori Yallock. A summary of the earthquake by Geoscience Australia states that it occurred at 11.39pm on Tuesday, March 10.

Rubber hits the road and the mountain By KATH GANNAWAY ORGANISERS behind the annual Mountain District Car and Bike Show are gearing up for another great event in Healesville. Monbulk couple Greg and Jacqueline Sheppard started the show nine years ago and have raised tens of thousands of dollars for local charitable organisations over that time. The community benefit, and family atmosphere, along with

the variety and quality of cars, bikes and trucks, have ensured it is a popular event not only with enthusiasts, but with the broader community. Among the vehicles that regularly go on show are beautifully restored cars of all ages, work-weary trucks, chromedup bikes and cars that have become a canvas for spectacular artwork. This year is the ninth show and along with the vehicle displays and competitions, and

Trade Alley, two live bands, The Infernos and The Might Kings, will be on stage. There will be activities for the kids, and lots of food vendors, including fund-raising community groups providing food at affordable prices. The show is on Sunday 22 March, from 10am to 3pm, at the Don Road Sporting Complex in Healesville. Phone Greg or Jacqueline on 9737 2129 for more information.

Organisers Greg and Jacqueline Sheppard with Lions Pride Holden Car Club president John O’Sullivan, from Upwey. Club members from around Victoria brought around 25 cars to the show last year. 136053 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY

Jupiter ascends to great heights

CO

JUPITER Ascending is unabashedly style over substance - and it’s awesome. When lowly housecleaner Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) learns that she is actually interplanetary royalty, she becomes tangled in the affairs of an alien noble house vying for her inheritance of the Earth. Jupiter Ascending plays to the Wachowskis’ strengths of big ideas and mindblowing spectacle, and has certain elements that might have been disastrous in the hands of more restrained directors. All of the characters are quite basic, including Jupiter, but this works well in fram-

ing her as an everyday person thrown into extraordinary situations, thus helping us relate to her. Kunis and Channing Tatum (as Jupiter’s guard Caine) have endearing, dependable chemistry (even if the romantic sub-plot is terribly hackneyed). The plot is lightweight and feels rushed in parts, as if cut for time, but Jupiter Ascending still astounds with creative, energetic action and enthralling world-building. The set design, costumes and effects are magnificently vibrant. The film takes old sci-fi

’S NE IE R U V LBOT MOES E M BES RIC P

croydon

tropes such as genetic engineering, harvesting humans as resources (like The Matrix) and spacefaring aristocracies (a la Dune) and makes them feel bold and fresh. Jupiter Ascending needed some rewrites (and recasting Eddie Redmayne, who absolutely sucks as the main villain), but it’s nevertheless wonderful to watch a dynamic, good-humoured space opera that has fun but thinks big at the same time. Too few mainstream sci-fi films do both these days. - Seth Hynes

At Mount Lilydale Mercy College, we strive to create a strong sense of community where

students feel safe and connected and where relationships between staff, students and parents are based on mutual respect and have a high priority. Students are encouraged to be actively involved in the life of the college, particularly through the extensive co-curricular program that provides many opportunities in the areas of Christian outreach, performing arts, sport, music, leadership, debating and public speaking, to name just a few. Students who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to their studies, and who are involved in the life of the college, have the opportunity to

take on leadership roles at their respective year levels. There is a strong emphasis on effective communication between the college and families.

Parents are invited and encouraged to be part of this college community. Mount Lilydale Mercy College has established numerous committees to provide a framework for involvement and contribution.

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF CO-EDUCATION In response to a request from the Catholic Education Office to meet the demand for boys’ secondary education, the Sisters of Mercy agreed to the changeover of the girls’ day and boarding, Prep – Year 12 school, to become a Year 7 – 12 secondary College. In January 1975, 144 boys were enrolled in what was the beginning of co-education. In the initial years the ratio of boys to girls was 1:5 in the senior classes and by 1981 the primary classes had been fazed out, facilities expanded and the ratio of boys and girls was equal. By the end of the first decade Mount Lilydale was recognized as a prominent Catholic College serving the needs of families in the Yarra Valley and is now recognized as a leading educational centre of excellence.

St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School prides itself on engaging the students.

Fostering engagement

Teamwork is a key part of the St Joseph’s School’s environment.

Holistic learning ST Joseph’s School provides children the home team advantage, in which the positive energy and support of those around them enables the achievement of their personal best. The school has developed great writers, readers, runners, painters, batsmen and singers. As part of wellbeing at SJS, the children are encouraged to

develop trust in their peers, as evident in the photograph, and a desire to work co-operatively and create win/win successes. Recognition of similiarities and respect for our differences, is an important part of the school’s extensive well-being program. The staff, students and families of St Joseph’s School are a

community of people sharing opportunities to live the Gospel values of love, understanding, respect and service. St Joseph’s School offers children the opportunity to learn in an environment that values personal and individual care, attention to individual learning styles and developing the whole child.

ST Brigid’s Catholic Primary School is a welcoming, supportive community that values the talents and contributions of each child. The school continues to build and foster involvement in every child’s education. It’s vision centres around engagement of all students. The school is inspired by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and strives to create an environment where stidents can thrive and grow spiritu-

ally, academically, socially, emotionally and physically. St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School provides a comprehensive curriculum, which covers the essential aspects of children’s behaviour, knowledge, learning capabilities and skills. The basis of its educational philosophy is student-centred learning involving deep thinking and inquiry. As well as a strong classroom focus, which involves

varied curriculum initiatives, and importantly social and emotional learning, the school provides significant variations and initiatives that are beneficial to all its students. These range from homegrown K-Series initiatives, meditation Thursday, fitness Friday, extension of students and a strong senior leadership program. The school community has strongly worked towards building capacity.

Community Bank rates well By KATH GANNAWAY

popular credit cards. “These rate reductions will be welcomed by existing customers or anyone looking for a better deal,” she said. The bank offers a range of credit cards with rates and benefits designed to suit different needs - from the award-winning “Basic Black” to the Just Business MasterCard for savvy business owners. The bank was crowned Roy Morgan’s Business Bank of the Year for the fourth year running, a great recommendation for any business looking to tap into a better business deal,

and contribute to their local community through their banking. Wilma said it was also a great time for anyone looking to buy a home, or to renegotiate a home-loan, to call in and have a chat. Insurances, including home, car and travel, are another area where Wilma said the bank offered an excellent product and rate. Board chairman, Gary Slater, said the profit share model of community banking had proven itself in communities across the Yarra Valley, and Healesville would see even bigger benefits once the bank was in profit.

“Our focus right now is on growing our business so we can invest even further in our community,” he said. The bank has supported many community organisations and events over the past four years thanks to the Bendigo Bank’s marketing fund which provides sponsorship dollars based on the banking business at the Healesville Community Bank. Mr Slater said most recent community investments were with the Badger Creek CFA, Healesville’s 150th celebrations, the Badger Creek Men’s Shed and the Mountain District Car Show, which is on this weekend.

“These sponsorships were made possible by the banking business that Wilma and our experienced and friendly staff are building every day in Healesville,” he said. “Whatever it is, a home loan, insurances, a credit card, they will be happy to talk banking business.” The Healesville branch is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Call in or contact Wilma or one of the bank’s friendly staff on 5962 1011.

‘BIGGER Than a Bank’ is more than a slogan for the board and staff of Healesville’s Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank. Now in its fifth year, the bank provides a community-owned option for businesses and individuals in the district to tap into a competitive bank and, through their banking, support community groups and initiatives. Branch Manager, Wilma Gibson, said bank staff were delighted with the latest initiatives from Bendigo Bank which recently lowered interest rates on a number of its most

A regional partnership with the TAC and the Victorian Government.

Going the extra mile By KATH GANNAWAY WHAT drives a perfectly sensible grown-up to head back into the passenger seat of a non-related teenage learner driver? Surely, a mum, dad or other family member has done their duty having spent 120 hours on the road with a son, daughter, grandchild or other young relative on a mission to get their driver’s licence. And, for that matter how does a young learner without a ‘grown up’ to teach them to drive, find such a person. For Rhonda Rattray, having taught her son to drive, it was about knowing she had the experience, skills, temperament and time to teach other young people to drive, and survive on the roads. For 19-year-old Natasha Treller, it was about gaining not only technical driving skills, but finding someone who could help her achieve the 120 hours on the road that is a mandatory part of getting a licence. As it turns out, it’s often about more than the on-road experience. It was the L2P Learner Driver Mentor program that brought the two together. L2P is a community based volunteer program funded by VicRoads and run by Maria McLoughlin at Yarra Ranges Council’s Youth Services department. The program provides support, guidance and access to driving practice for learner drivers aged from 16 to 21 who face significant barriers to gaining the 120 hours driving. The council provides a vehicle and training and support for the community volunteers who sign up. L2P starts with time with a registered driving instructor to enable the young people to come into the program with a certain level of driving skills before being matched with a mentor. “L2P also provides opportunities for the development of personal relationships whereby the volunteer mentor empowers the young person with practical driving tools as well as social skills,” Ms McLoughlin said. “Youth mentoring provides opportunities for volunteer mentors to make a positive impact on the lives of young people, helping them achieve goals and build their confidence. “The strong and positive relationships formed and maintained are essential in achieving success with the program. Natasha is the third person Rhonda has taken for her licence. In between her first L2P driver and Natasha, she mentored a mature-aged Vietnamese woman who had come out to Australia as a fully-licensed driver, but needed to get her Victorian licence. That, she says, was more nerve-wracking than

In it together - Rhonda Rattray is steering learner driver Natasha Treller towards a safer Picture: PETER DOUGLAS driving future. 135986 anything she has had with her younger proteges. “She was used to driving a scooter in Vietnam and would cut in and out quickly,” she said. “Even now, I feel safer with Tash driving.” Open communication is the key to a successful L2P outcome, according to Rhonda. “You get to know them so well,” she said. “To start with, it’s just a teenager and an older person sitting in a car, but over 120 hours one-onone in a car, you really get to know each other.” That build up of relationship over time, enable both the mentor and the driver to tackle any is-

sues, whether they are about driving skills or behaviour, in a respectful and non-confrontational way. She said it was very much about the mutual obligation for respect and added that there was great support and advice through the program for mentors on how to deal with any situations that came up. She has learnt a lot from the L2Ps about what some of the dangers are for young drivers who will walk away from their licence test with two red ‘P’ stick-ons representing two things - the

great achievement and satisfaction of getting their ‘P’s, and the sobering fact that they are now officially in the highest risk category for drivers. Road rules, and distraction, are two of the risk factors that Rhonda sees in young drivers. “There’s a common misapprehension that once you have passed your test you don’t need to know the road rules,” she said. “They get their Learners just to get their Learners, and the road rules don’t always stay in their heads, so they will be driving down the road and they don’t know who has right of way. “Nine times out of 10 when they are going for the test the VicRoads tester will say ‘you didn’t check your mirrors enough’, that’s almost a given.” Mobile phones? “They’re really attached to these things and it’s very hard for them to put them down. They will want to check their phones at the lights and even if they are on vibrate, they still hear it and it’s a distraction. Rhonda’s solution for one driver was relegation to the glove box for the whole lesson. And, SatNavs? “We don’t use them. I like to get them to read the road signs and learn to look ahead and anticipate,” she said. “They’re distracting even for a fully-licensed driver, and even while you’re on your ‘P’s you’re still learning. “How are you going to gain those observation and concentration skills if you’re on SatNav?” Natasha had completed only 20 hours of her driving time when she started, and is now up to 80 hours and says she feels much more confident on the roads. “We’ve spent time on the local roads, but we’ve also spent time driving on the freeway,” she said. “Recently, we drove into the city, which was a great experience.” Refining her reverse-parking skills is the big challenge right now, and with Rhonda’s help, she is hoping her licence is not too far away. L2P mentoring has much to recommend it, according to Rhonda who said there’s a lot of satisfaction to be gained in being in the passenger seat with an L-plater. “It’s very rewarding to think this may help somebody become more independent,” she said. “The time on the roads is invaluable to ensuring safe driving practices for years to come.” She would like to see more people taking on the role of driving mentors to learner drivers. The L2P program has two vehicles, one based in Lilydale and the other in Yarra Junction. Anyone interested in becoming a mentor, or matching up with a mentor, should contact Ms McLoughlin at Yarra Ranges Council Youth Services on 9294 6775.

Irish theme at races By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM THE summer racing season finished in style over the weekend with the Hirsch Memorial Yarra Valley Cup. Irish was the theme of the St Patrick’s Day celebration, with the $100,000 Jack Hirsch Cup taken home by Glen Boss riding ‘Index Linked.’ As always, the race was just one of the many exciting events happening at the track on the day. An Irish-themed Fashions on the Field, live Irish music and dancing, free children’s entertainment and themed food and beer ensured a great day was had by all. Nine races rounded out the program, with many already looking forward to Yarra Valley Racing’s 2015/2016 season.

Athletes shine at nationals By PETER DOUGLAS YARRA Ranges Athletics athletes are the toast of Victoria this weekend after four athletes won medals at the Australian Junior Track and Field Championships in Sydney. Lateisha Willis was the undoubted star of the meet with two gold medals (90m hurdles and 200m hurdles) with a silver medal (4x100m relay).

Before the meeting, Lateisha was the club’s only national champion, having won gold at last year’s championships. Lateisha went one better this year, picking up two gold medals, but has been joined in the national champion list by James Laven after his win in the 2000m steeplechase. Not to be outdone, James’s sister Georgia finished third in her 800m to claim a bronze medal.

Game set to tackle a killer UPPER Ferntree Gully’s round-one clash with the Heathmont Jets will also be the setting for an important fund-raiser. After the Jets lost their own Simon Minson to Cystic Fibrosis last year, they will dedicate their first match of the year to raising money for the condition. Commemorative jumpers specifically designed for the occasion will be auctioned off after the match and a luncheon will be held at the ground on the day. Club president Rob Parker said the players felt strongly about

Formula for great golf THE Lakeside-Marysville Challenge was held on Saturday with very pleasant weather and great company. This is an annual event where members of the Albert Park Golf Club, who are not able to use their course because of the Grand Prix, come to Marysville and compete for a perpetual cup based on the best 20 scores from each club. This year Marysville was victorious with a score of 741 to Lakeside’s 723. Members from each club now know each other quite well and the Marysville club thanks the Lakeside members for their continued support of the event. The ladies’ winner from Marysville was Park Orchards member Rebecca Lee (28) with 38 points, and Susanna Lee (31, and no relation) had the best score for the Lakeside ladies with 36. Brendan Krueger from Mount Evelyn (26) won the Marysville men’s section with an excellent 44, while Henry Clayton (5) was the Lakeside winner with 40. Nearest the pins were Brad Simpson on the 4th, Ming Kuan on the 9th, Gail Leigh on the 11th and Jan Wheeler on the 18th. Gail actually scored a hole in one on the 11th so her name will go on the honour board. Thanks must go to Kellan and the volunteers who did an excellent job preparing the course, and to those who donated prizes for the raffle: Peter Lilley, Margaret and Michael Wood, Roger Thom-

Chelsea Thompson had to wait until Sunday afternoon to claim her silver medal for finishing second in her 200m. Especially impressive was the results of all our athletes, almost all achieving personal bests on the biggest stage. New members of all ages and abilities will always be welcomed at our club. the cause. “The players wanted to do something to help, which is why we’ve organised Cystic Fibrosis round,” he said. “We’re encouraging everyone to get down to the ground to support this very worthy cause.” The clash between Upper Ferntree Gully and Heathmont will be held at 2.10pm on Saturday 11 April, at H.E. Parker Reserve, Heathmont. To donate to Cystic Fibrosis Victoria visit www.cysticfibrosis.org. au/vic/

THE Dandenong Ranges Junior Football League is desperate to ensure a girls league is up and running this year. Girls football is the fastest growing area of sport Australia wide and the region’s youth will soon benefit. Along with five other local clubs, Monbulk is hoping to join in this trend, this with the league’s first girls team ... but they need assistance. The AFL has held numerous school sessions, trying to create interest, and Monbulk has their girls’ registration night this Thursday night from 5pm to 7pm at the Monbulk Reserve.

as, Sabrina and Travers Stow, and JB Hi-Fi. The clubs also appreciate the efforts of Alan and Helen Howard who co-ordinated the raffle, and to all those members who contributed to the success of the day. Lastly, thanks went out to House of Golf in Ringwood for their generous vouchers which went out to all who played on the day. On Thursday, 14 nine-holers played for par on the back 9. Members welcomed visitors Greg Adams and Bruce Edgar, and Greg won the day with square. The daily member winner for five points on -1 was Russell Cohen. In a six-way countback on -2 for the other points were Brodie Arnott, Ray Jones, Kris Carlton and Chris Burgess. Chris Burgess also won nearest the pin on the 18th. Four ladies from Marysville travelled to Woodend on Thursday to compete in the Ruby McKenzie Salver Stableford event. Some 54 ladies from throughout the district attended, a record for the event, and while there were no winners from Marysville, Jenny Coleman and Heather Jenkins received 3 and 1 Dalhousie points respectively. New coach, recruits fortify club for new season HEALESVILLE Football Netball Club has revealed an exciting newlook line-up for its 2015 season, including a new head coach. Heading the inclusions is senior coach Bryan ‘Jack’ Cole, who brings much experience, coaching both Montmorency and Geensborough football clubs. As a coach, Bryan has taken these clubs into finals consistently since

2005 and has also been involved in the AFL TAC Cup program for Northern Knights. Bryan’s playing career has been at Collingwood (AFL), Coburg (VFL) and Montmorency. Healesville will also unleash a host of handy recruits, including Jason Reynolds, who will take up a playing senior assistant role. Reynolds is a versatile player, ca-

pable of playing multiple key positions, as well as ruck. He has played in the VAFA, SFL and EFL, as well as being a three-time premiership player with Oakleigh Amateur Football Club. Joining him is Paul Fermanis, a strong midfield-forward who has played with Noble Park (EFL) and Port Melbourne (VFL). Meanwhile, tall Brogan Murray

brings much experience after being involved with the Greater Western Sydney talented athlete program. He has also represented Australia in elite international volleyball. Brogan has played with Leongatha and Northcote Cougars in the NFL. Club president Felix Fraraccio said the new additions had created a buzz around the club.

“We’re confident of being part of a successful year at Healesville,” he said. “We welcome all our new coaching staff, players and their families to the club.” Seniors regular Luke Barclay will coach the reserves, while the Under 18s coach is Thomas Chandler, who was also at the helm for last year’s premiership.

On cusp of finals glor y By CHRIS ANDERSON YVDCA THE semi-finals in the Yarra Valley District Cricket Association have been run and won, with the finalists decided. As so often has been the case in recent seasons, batsmen have succumbed to the heavy weight of nerves. But this season, a couple of individual centuries highlighted a high-scoring opening day, putting their teams on track for victory. In DJ Strachan Shield, Mount Evelyn travelled to Warburton-Millgrove full of confidence after beating the competition’s best team in the final round. In sunny conditions, the home side won the toss and elected to bat. Sensing that history was against the batting teams in finals cricket, the Burras started cautiously in an attempt to keep wickets in hand. Despite some probing bowling, brothers Ben and David Lever managed to navigate the early exchanges to set their team up, reaching the tea break at 0/99. After regaining their footing after the break, Ben (37) succumbed to some beautiful spin bowling from Jed Thompson. But David strode confidently to a masterful century. Despite some streaky strokeplay at times, his innings was littered with powerful cover drives and brutal pull-shots. Mount Evelyn did manage to squeeze itself into the contest as captain Kane Jones and brother Brad Jones collected vital wickets, including that of Lever for 116. A new-look Luke Darwall (43) preyed on a tiring fielding side, launching a stinging attack that added to the final score. But Chad Witherdin kept his cool to net figures of 5/56 and bowl the home side out for 271. Mount Evelyn made a fair fist of the fight, but was unable to build partnerships of significance. One constant for the visitors was that of opener Chris Anderson. The veteran battled staunchly through 68 overs to give his team some sniff of a late spirt towards victory, but he, and side, timed their run too

late, as he ran himself out for 98, and his team’s innings rolled up quickly for 215. David Lever (2/30) complemented his century with early wickets, while an expert spell from Luke Darwall (2/69) and Mick Walker (3/55) ensured the Burras booked their ticket to the big dance. Meanwhile, Seville couldn’t contain a withering attack from Woori Yallock and found itself 380 runs behind after day one. The Tigers have been carrying the Seville monkey on their back in recent matches, as Woori has missed some guilt-edged chances to beat the Blues this season. The big difference this game is the Tigers had the chance to bat first. After losing a wicket in the first over, George Reynolds joined Mick Dwyer, and the pair batted their team to an ominous position. Dwyer has proven this season to be their most consistent and reliable batsman. With Reynolds bringing up a much deserved half-century, Dwyer kicked on with his assault of the wilting Blues attack. Unfortunately, Dwyer fell agonising close to a century, but his 89 had his team well and truly on the front foot. Captain Daniel Mock joined Michael King and they shut the door well and truly. King (81) showed his class and experience by not giving the Blues a sniff. No one could begrudge Mock’s moment in the sun as his unbeaten 107 led his side to the monumental total of 5/380. Mock’s opposite number, Dean Troyhan (3/113), toiled manfully, but he had no answers. In reply, the Blues may as well have not turned up on the second day. Fast-bowling maestros, Simon Young (6/25) and Jackson Wright (4/25), cut a swathe through a Seville line-up. The day wrapped up quickly with the Blues bowled out for a paltry 53. This leaves us with an intriguing grand final match-up between Wabrurton-Millgrove and Woori Yallock. In RA Finger Trophy action, games followed a similar path to the top grade. Seville managed to post 225 against a persis-

tent Woori Yallock attack. Roger Oates once again led the way with an expertly made 84, while he was well supported by his old sparring partners Scott Luckhurst (29) and Mark Johnson (29). Stephen Morgan (3/93), Matt White (4/62) and veteran Tim Diggins (2/17) kept things in check to the Tigers. Woori Yallock would’ve entered day two with some confidence, as they possess the skill, and experience to challenge the total. That wasn’t to be as Seville produced an allround performance, as Ron Sandfort (4/13) and Tom Page (2/23) led a dominant bowling display to roll the Tigers for 106. In the grade’s other semi final, Coldstream had to battle hard against a well-rounded Healesville attack on day one. Surprise packet, Michael Jackson, took the honours for the home side, claiming 4/7 and putting the brakes on the Crocs, while he was wellsupported by the talented Dillon Kerr (2/35). Captain Ben Walsh ensured the Crocs wouldn’t be embarrassed with a great unbeaten knock of 81 and his team’s total of 162 proved to be more than enough. The Bloods were powerless in the face of a great bowling display from Carl Dikschei (5/17), who was well supported by Daniel Sharp (2/20), as the pair led the Crocs to a grand final appearance as they bowled out Healesville for 56.
