picked Nicola up for her final goodbye to her little brother and best buddy. “I wish we lived in the city so we wouldn’t have to die. “And I wish Eli had stayed alive. “This is for Eli, she said, holding up a picture she had drawn. Stefan Marnock spoke on behalf of Eli’s brothers, Blake and Jesse. Jesse shared special memories of going out into the garden with Eli to pick two cumquats, one to eat and one to throw. Blake told Eli - “I will miss you forever. Those gathered then viewed a touching collection of photos, capturing Eli’s day-to-day adventures and milestones such as his first haircut and Christmas as well as photos of him enjoying time with his family. Named Eli Ian after his “grandfather in heaven,“ Eli’s grandparents Sue, John and Glenys along with the rest of his family said it brought comfort that the two were now together. After the service, those present released balloons into the sunny blue skies in memory of Eli - the little boy who brought a sparkle to their lives.

FITTINGLY, the family of Eli Marnock lit sparklers at his funeral on Saturday to remember the little boy who lit up the lives of so many. Hundreds gathered at the Discovery Church in Mount Evelyn to farewell Eli, who died two weeks ago when a tree fell on the room where he was sleeping at the family’s The Patch home. Yet the tragic circumstances of his death were not the focus as his family was joined by hundreds of friends, members of the Patch community and emergency services personnel to say a final goodbye. One by one, father Stefan, mother Suzie and siblings Jackie, Jesse, Blake and Nicola shared their memories of a cheeky little boy who loved giggles, cuddles and above all, his family. A coffin decorated green with characters from “Dinosaur Train and surrounded by Tonka trucks were stark reminders of a young and innocent life lost. Supported by each other and showing remarkable poise, Eli’s parents were first to share memories of the two years they spent with their precious little boy. Stefan Marnock remembered Eli for his big beautiful eyes, smile and infectious laughter. He said he had a knack of making his way into everyone’s lives and hearts, especially his brothers and sisters, and how he became his grand-dad’s little shadow. Suzie spoke of buying Eli a water pistol, saying that “no-one was safe from his aim.“ “But then came that cheeky smile, and once again, he got away with it,“ she said. A lover of the outdoors, Eli first went camping at only six days old and frequently splashed and
played in puddles in the backyard. A theme throughout the service was Eli’s easygoing personality and love for his family. Celebrant Janice Tait told those gathered he was “the best baby of all, the cruisiest kid, while Stefan Marnock said that “if all babies were like Eli, you’d have 10. Bravely, Eli’s oldest sister, Jackie, spoke of the special connection shared between sister and brother. She told of his skill in spotting the McDonald’s golden arches, and the way he was always the one to ask, because “Mum couldn’t say no to Eli. The bond between the two siblings was clear. Jackie was first to hear “I love you from Eli and shared cheeky memories like Eli sneaking sips of her Pepsi or taking food from everyone’s plates. “Eli my gorgeous boy, no words can describe my endless love for you. You’ll always be my favourite, she said. “Darling boy, two years was nowhere near enough. It’s just not fair. “If life was measured by love, you would have lived forever. In what was a heart-wrenching expression of grief, Jackie then

Due place for fallen heroes By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM “TODAY is all about the 32.” Emerald RSL president Peter Maloney’s voice rang out over the crowd gathered at the opening of Anzac Walk in Emerald last Wednesday. Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and Lady Lynne Cosgrove along with other distinguished guests including Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Michael Ronaldson, CEO of Anzac House Michael Annett, MP for La Trobe Jason Wood, Cardinia Shire mayor Leticia Wilmot and members of the Emerald RSL to commemorate Emerald’s 32 soldiers who never returned from World War I. Sir Peter arrived at the ceremony on Puffing Billy, accompanied by local school children dressed in period costumes and representatives of Emerald’s fallen heroes. Welcomed by the navy band from Cerberus, he acknowledged the community’s effort in staging such an event. “What the community has done here is very special,” he told the Emerald community and invited guests, including descendants of those commemorated. “Indeed, 100 years on from the start of the First World War, you’ve decided to dedicate yourself to the memory of those who served our nation during the conflict, and those 32 local men who never returned home from their service on those distant foreign shores.” Speaking of the effects of war on the fledgling nation, Sir Peter said that “nothing before or since has had the same impact on our nation.” With total Australian casualties sitting at over 215,000, 39 per cent of
Emerald RSL president, Peter Maloney, walks with Sir Peter Cosgrove. Picture: PETER DOUGLAS Australian men aged 18-44 joined the war effort. “The First World War certainly demonstrated a feeling of nationhood,” he said. “There were the shared losses and heartbreak, and yet at the same time, there was great pride in this generation of wonderful Australians.” The walk features 10 different audio stations, where visitors can learn about the impact of the war on the town of Emerald and hear the stories of individuals involved. The stories of the soldiers are displayed on eight pillars, and four ad-
ditional pillars commemorate the lone pine, the Unknown Soldier, Anzac Place and Lieutenant Colonel Donovan Joynt. Members of the RSL beamed as the Royal Air Force Roulettes Squadron flew overhead and Sir Peter paid tribute to the beauty of the area. “It is Lynne and my first visit to Emerald, but after seeing the beauty of the area, the thrill of the train and the quiet dignity of this space; it won’t be our last visit. We must come back and spend more time,” he said. “It is a very significant day.”

Backing for a vital ser vice AS THE Member for Gembrook and Shadow Minister for Emergency Services, I will continue lobbying the Andrews Government for the muchneeded Emerald SES unit. The Emerald SES turns out to more than 1000 jobs in the area with 45 volunteers; this puts the Emerald SES as one of the busiest across the state. At the 2014 State Election I was proud to work with Unit Manager Ben Owen to see $1.8 million committed to re-building the local unit. The Emerald Community has seen

many emergencies in the local area including major fires, storm events and even flooding. On all occasions we have events like this our local SES Vol-
unteers are out in force to assist in the community. The need to build a new station will allow the unit to apply for new stateof-the-art equipment and vehicles, including the current target at the unit to raise funds for a replacement vehicle. I am proud to support the unit’s call for new facilities that will allow a safer and cleaner training area, an area for a shower after a call out and improved facilities for debriefing after major events. via services like CFA, SES, police and ambulance in the district. It is the services we rely on during days of higher distress. I encourage all in the community to support their local volunteers and offer joining if you can spare the time. There are many roles in the stations and units for all abilities. You do not need to turn out to fires or other disasters; you may be able to assist around the station or in communications or fund-raising. Finally I thank all our hard working volunteers in the hills; while this sum-
mer was a bit quiet, we are sure we will see a return to a traditional hot summer next year. To support the Emerald SES while they service an area that has 22 CFA stations, please look at signing the petition to build a new SES station for Emerald. The petition is available to sign at Emerald SES Unit, corner Old Gembrook and Sheriffs roads, http://bradbattin.com.au/emerald-ses/ and Brad Battin MP’s electorate office, at Suite 5/6-8 Langmore Lane, Berwick.

Make some noise about Maxwell affinity with the region. Up until only a few years ago, Maxwell was still living with his parents in South Belgrave, despite a million-dollar contract in the Indian Premier League. Of course, this was probably due to the fact he was travelling the globe extensively with his cricket. Nevertheless, he is still the pride of the Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association. Maxwell’s journey to superstardom seems to be following the path of fellow hyperactive batsman, David Warner. Like Maxwell, Warner burst onto the international scene through some whirlwind batting displays in Twenty20 cricket. Then, it wasn’t long before he became more than a one-hit wonder, establishing himself in the one-day and then Test teams. The region should be right behind Maxwell in the remaining weeks of the World Cup. Who knows, maybe if Australia achieves World Cup glory once again, we might see a visit from Maxwell and the Cup to this region?

IT SEEMS to be slipping by quietly that this region could soon be home to one of the brightest sporting stars in the country. Slowly but surely, Belgrave-raised Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell is taking the next step to becoming one of the most potent all-rounders in world cricket. Only weeks after taking home the Twenty20 Player of the Year award at the Allan Border Medal, Maxwell’s century against Sri Lanka last weekend showed his new maturity could be a factor at this year’s World Cup. While it’s fair to say he didn’t take much time to get his eye in, and while there were plenty of his trademark reverse sweeps, there was method to the way he attacked the bowlers. Simply, he crunched the ball to where the fielders weren’t. This is a luxury only afforded by those who have an elite game. Maxwell played his junior cricket for South Belgrave, where he no doubt learnt his trade from many fine cricketing mentors in the hills. Also, Maxwell seems to have retained a close

Play space moves beyond design barrier By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM TENDER for the construction of the Kalorama play space is expected to be called in May, with the project currently in the ‘detailed design’ phase. The concept of the space was the result of consultations with both the Kalorama community and students at Mount Dandenong Primary School. More than 70 residents attended a community meeting last year to discuss the play space and improvements that need to be made to Kalorama Reserve, the site of the project. Yarra Ranges Council also asked students to provide ideas for what they would like to see in the new area. The play space was listed in the confidential section of Yarra Ranges Council’s 10 March agenda.

Kewell jewels on offer By PETER DOUGLAS AUSTRALIA’S most valuable football export, Harry Kewell, is lacing up his boots and visiting Monbulk next month. The Harry Kewell Academy Masterclass will run a clinic in Monbulk at Monbulk Recreation Reserve on Tues-
day 14 April. Kewell is best known for his exploits with EPL club Leeds United and the Australian Socceroos. The star aims to offer personalised training, unlike anything else available in Australia, to ensure children are of-
fered the same opportunities as him. Kewell will teach respect for the ball and precisely what that means. He will hand down things he was taught early in his soccer life. A unique component of Kewell’s academy is his pledge to attend every
clinic and indeed his commitment to teaching children dedication and respect by way of ownership of the ball. Parents are encouraged to register their children, aged 8-14, via www.harrykewellacademy.com for the 4pm-7pm clinic at Monbulk Recreation Reserve, Moores Road, Monbulk.

Paul Hoffman's wife Wendy, daughter Amber and son Austin greet him at the end of the swim. he said. “I needed a goal when I was done with the channel to help me get rid of the weight.” During training for the bay crossing he shed 15 kilograms he’d put on for the channel journey. Swimming for fun is now his focus and he’ll support two swimmers in training to tackle the channel this year.

“I really got dragged around quite a bit.” Mr Hoffman took on the challenge to mark his 40th birthday. His support crew dragged him from the water eight hours into his first attempt at the swim in July 2012 following four hours of vomiting. “I always wanted to do it (the bay swim) but the channel was my focus,”

SELBY man Paul Hoffman has braved sharks to swim a marathon and set a record. The Rhodesian-born father of two, along with Michael Gregory and Steven Klugman, on 8 March swam 47 kilometres across Port Phillip Bay. “We became the first people to do the swim without a shark cage,” Mr Hoffman said. They set off from Port Arlington about 3.15am and arrived at Frankston 14 hours and seven minutes later, about 5.20pm. Mr Hoffman said only 10 other people had swum across the bay and one was in his support team - long distance swimming champion Tammy Van Wisse. She was the last person to complete the marathon and did so in a shark cage. “She kept us fed for the duration and then popped in the water for the last 13km of the swim,” Mr Hoffman said. “That was fantastic. The last couple of hours got choppy.” But it was nothing compared to his journey across the English Channel on 26 July last year. Mr Hoffman set off from Dover at 7.30pm and emerged from the water in France at 9am the following day. The course is 34km in a straight line but he swam more than 60km. “The current is quite strong and it flows up and down the channel,” he said.
BEN Lucas has already dedicated seven years to the Australian Army, but his service doesn’t end there. On Saturday 28 March, the Boronia resident will march 40 kilometres carrying 20 kilograms to raise money for the Mount Dandenong RSL and ‘Soldier On,’ a charity supporting homeless veterans. Starting at Federation Square at 3am, the solo walk is expected to take nine hours, which Ben plans to complete unaccompanied. Ben, who owns personal training business ‘Force Fit’ as well as working as a plumber, was inspired to undertake the walk after he saw a sign outside the RSL appealing for help with general maintenance and felt compelled to help. “It’s so important to keep local RSL branches alive and supporting the community,” he said. “The older guys can mentor the younger ones and it provides support for everyone involved. It’s just crucial.” On his arrival, the RSL will host a barbecue starting at noon with the community invited to attend. Ben hopes to raise $20,000 for the cause, and has set up an online fundraising page for those wishing to donate. As a member of the Army for seven years, Ben served in East Timor on a peacekeeping

Maintaining a strong link to the defence community, he is now alarmed at the rate of homelessness among returned servicemen. “The number of homeless ex-defence veterans is alarmingly high, which is simply unacceptable,” he said.
“With the help of everyone who donates, we’re trying to make an impact on the lives of people living on the streets.” To donate to the cause, search ‘Stomp to Sassafras’ on mycause.com.au or contact the Mount Dandenong RSL Club.

Pat on the Patman back By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM ATTENDING a global animal rights event in Melbourne on Friday night, Donalea Patman had every right to be proud. The Olinda resident has worked tirelessly with MP for La Trobe Jason Wood to ban ‘trophy hunters’ from
bringing back pieces of hunted endangered animals to Australia. Appearing via video link, Minister for Environment Greg Hunt announced that the importation of all lion parts into Australia is now banned. Mr Wood said it was a pleasing result after a long campaign.
“I am proud to say that Australia is taking the historic step of banning the imports of lion trophies,” Mr Wood said. “The practice of canned hunting is completely unacceptable, and I would like to thank the concerned and persistent constituent of La Trobe - Donalea
Patman - for bringing the issue to our attention.” Internationally respected conservationist Ian Michler also spoke at the event, appearing on the big screen through a live cross to South Africa. A significant crowd enjoyed entertainment from African musicians and

To support this community initiative, customers are encouraged to venture out and find a bargain on Saturday 28 March, from 8am onwards, at the Moores Road reserve, Monbulk. Through this event, the organising committee is aiming to make up the required difference from the government funding already secured. Presently, the reserve hosts senior and junior football and netball clubs, as well as senior and junior cricket clubs. The reserve is an important community resource, so organisers are hoping to commence work next year, provided the required funds can be raised. President of the Monbulk Recreation Reserve and Building Committee Paul Utting said they

One sweet-sounding hills icon By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM THE Sweet Sassafras Open Community Choir started as a way to bring together music-loving locals, but has grown to become a hills icon. Recently celebrating its 10th birthday, the choir has recorded some impressive achievements throughout its lifespan and plans to continue to strengthen into the future.
Chorister Jackie Warburton said the choir had become popular and many locals found it to be a great way to connect with others in the area. “The choir’s purpose is to bring communities together to sing for pleasure, well-being, friendship and to create opportunities for personal growth through a cappella performance, she said. Highlights of the choir’s 10 years include
the production of a CD in 2007, involvement in the Melbourne Millennium chorus and regular performances at many local fetes, carols by candlelight and local music festivals including The Basin Music Festival and the End of the Line Festival. The choir meets at Sassafrass Primary School every Monday night under the direction of Chris Risely. Jackie said the anniversary has been both
an opportunity for reflection and a time to look to the future. “The last 10 years have seen the Sweet Sassafras Open Community Choir grow and strengthen into a touchstone of musical inspiration and togetherness for the community. “Happy birthday to the choir, and here’s to 10 more.
Minibeasts a big deal KIDS can enjoy being a scientist for a day at Birdsland’s annual Minibeast Festival, on Sunday 26 April. Yarra Ranges Council, Friends of Birdsland and Melbourne Water have been joining together to create the festival which aims to let kids discover and learn about the Minibeasts that live in our waterways. Minibeasts are small animals that don’t have an internal skeleton - animals known as invertebrates. From 11am until 3pm, families can visit the festival at the Birdsland Reserve Environment Centre, 271 Mount Morton Road, Belgrave Heights, and learn all about Minibeasts. Kids can enjoy a water discover activity, wetland walks, platypus talks, sustainable cities display, find nestbox information and hear a Birdsland heritage talk. Southern Dandenong Nursery will be open on the day for plant sales and advice on indigenous plant selection for your area. There will be a barbecue and hot and cold drinks available on the day. The festival will also officially open the Blackwood Trail, which has been closed since it was left devastated by the 2009 bushfires. The council and Melbourne Water have worked together to re-open the trail which is part of the Belgrave to Lysterfield Park Trail and provides an alternative route to the Birdsland Lake trails and Wetland Walk.

JUPITER Ascending is unabashedly style over substance - and it’s awesome. When lowly housecleaner Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) learns that she is actually interplanetary royalty, she becomes tangled in the affairs of an alien noble house vying for her inheritance of the Earth. Jupiter Ascending plays to the Wachowskis’ strengths of big ideas and mindblowing spectacle, and has certain elements that might have been disastrous in the hands of more restrained directors. All of the characters are quite basic, including Jupiter, but this works well in framing her as an everyday person thrown into extraordinary situations, thus helping us relate to her. Kunis and Channing Tatum (as Jupiter’s guard Caine) have endearing, dependable chemistry (even if the romantic sub-plot is terribly hackneyed). The plot is lightweight and feels rushed in parts, as if cut for time, but Jupiter Ascending still astounds with creative, energetic action and enthralling world-building. The set design, costumes and effects are magnificently vibrant. The film takes old sci-fi tropes such as genetic engineering, harvesting humans as resources (like The Matrix) and spacefaring aristocracies (a la Dune) and makes them feel bold and fresh. Jupiter Ascending needed some rewrites (and recasting Eddie Redmayne, who absolutely sucks as the main villain), but it’s nevertheless wonderful to watch a dynamic, good-humoured space opera that has fun but thinks big at the same time. Too few mainstream sci-fi films do both these days. - SETH HYNES

Vote and be counted By PETER DOUGLAS RESIDENTS in the Lyster Ward are reminded that postal voting for the Yarra Ranges byelection is now in full-swing. Voters should be on the look-out for their ballot pack. Enrolled residents may be fined if they do not vote, this includes homeowners and tenants. Returning Officer, Evelyn Rak, from the Victorian Electoral Commission, said residents needed to embrace their chance to vote. “To make sure their vote counts, voters should carefully read and follow the instructions in the ballot pack,” she said. “All completed ballot papers
must reach the Returning Officer by 6pm on Friday 27 March, or they cannot be counted.” Those who haven’t received their pack by tomorrow should call 9752 0523 during business hours for replacement. Voting is compulsory for those who were on the Victorian roll for this by-election at 4pm on Friday 30 January, 2015. The extraordinary vacancy arose after the resignation of Cr Samantha Dunn from council in December last year. The candidate elected at this by-election will sit on council until the next general election in October next year. Meanwhile, the nine candidates met last Wednesday for a community forum at the St

Hub of top entertainment AS THE sun begins to set, the light continues to shine on Belgrave’s hub of great music, restaurants and entertainment. In times gone by, the Cameo Cinema became the centre for Belgrave’s entertainment when it opened in 1935. While there have been changes in ownership over time, and even a few years in the 1960s when it was closed, the region has continued to see it thrive. Eddie Tamir purchased The Cameo in 2003, adding new cinemas, including a bar and rear deck overlooking the outdoor cinema. The Bell Tavern, established over 17 years ago, welcomed new publicans Wendy and Richard in July 2013. On the high side of the main street, the Bell is open seven days a week. Across the road, in about 2000, The Lazy River was established as a pool room and bar. It soon became Ruby’s - ‘the’ place to hear live bands. When it closed a couple of years ago, a collective gasp might have been heard. The Scarab Bar, tucked away next door to the Bell, had some great music belting out of that tiny place, too. It closed soon after Ruby’s, but the lull was short-lived. Sooki Lounge opened in November 2013 and there was another collective gasp - of amazement this time at how the old Ruby’s building had been superbly renovated by new owners Suzana and Steve. The venue quickly became a popular spot. Gin Lane recently opened its doors as Belgrave’s newest venue, rejuvenating the old Scarab Bar site. Bubbling along (pardon the pun) around the corner in Bayview Road is Oscar’s Ale House.
The night life provides something for everyone. Established in 2008 by its owners Gypsy and Brad, it has become well-renowned for Australian Craft Beer and international imports, winning many awards, including the 2010 People’s Choice Award for best small beer venue in Australia. Some might still remember the Aztec Bar on this site for many years before that. And just out of the town centre along Monbulk Road is Micawber Tavern - established since 1923.
Whether it’s music you’ve come to hear at any of these venues, or to see a movie at the Cameo, you also have a choice of fine restaurants in Belgrave’s town centre. This includes Australian, Chinese, French, Indian, Italian, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine. Belgrave’s Cellars is in a handy spot on Main Street near the Arcade and new owner, Joe, will be happy to help you with your selection. Private group bookings are available at
some of Belgrave’s venues and restaurants, too. One of the highlights on Belgrave’s calendar - a night that begins quite differently - is the community winter solstice event, the Belgrave Lantern Parade. It starts at 4pm, the highway closes at 5.30pm for the parade to light the way with lanterns held high, and a warm glow can be felt emanating from Belgrave’s collective heart to take us further into the night, and forward ... to a new and beautiful day.

School marks golden milestone CELEBRATIONS, reflections and reminiscing will be part of the school year at Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School Bayswater as it commemorates its 50th anniversary. Opened in 1965, accommodating children from Prep to Year 6, Our Lady of Lourdes’ grew to over 430 students by 1977. For 26 years (1973-1989), the Salesian Sisters were to lead the school through a time of population growth in the Bayswater area. With the school’s expansion came many new buildings and the support of parents was indeed obvious. A strong community spirit developed at the school with families becoming involved in sports days, working bees, fetes and many fund-raising and social events. In 2015, while much smaller in size, the school continues to provide a warm community-focused school with an inclusive and vibrant learning environment for its students. The school boasts diverse cultures that are respected and celebrated. Our Lady of Lourdes is a school where Catholic faith and traditions are woven through every aspect of its work. The school looks forward to the celebrations in its Jubilee year and is ready to take on the joys and challenges of educating children in the Bayswater area for many years to come. For further information about upcoming celebrations or enrolments, contact the school office on 9729 3411.

Diverse interests well backed WITH an open-entry enrolment policy, Mater Christi College Belgrave attracts students from various backgrounds with diverse talents and interests. Students from more than 50 different primary schools commence their secondary education each year at this leading provider of girls’ Catholic education. The diverse interest of the students is supported by wide choices within the curriculum and co-curricular programs, from leadership courses to hands-on Hybrid Car mechanical work. Diversity is also apparent in the pathways chosen by graduating students. Almost 80 per cent of the 2014 Year 12 group were offered places for their first or second-preference courses including: Marketing, International Studies, Arts, Law, Pharmacy, Biomedical Science, Justice, Journalism, Education, Wildlife and Conservation Biology, Forensic Science, Environments, Science/Global Studies, Commerce/Engineering, Health Sciences, Games Design, Fine Arts, Music and Media. Principal Mary Fitz-Gerald said success was an individual experience. “For some students, completing a secondary education is an outstanding achievement to be celebrated, while for others, entry to highly competitive uni-
versity courses is the ultimate goal,” she said. “Providing girls with inspiration and the opportunities to develop confidence and experi-
ence success is vital. “From their commencement in Year 7, girls will witness other students as female leaders: as captain of the sports team
or student SRC leader or as the lead role in the school production. “When girls consistently witness other girls as role mod-
els in all areas, they will realise there is no limit to what girls can do.” Mater Christi College proudly celebrates girls’ educa-

Students are encouraged to be actively involved in the life of the college, particularly through the extensive co-curricular program that provides many opportunities in the areas of Christian outreach, performing arts, sport, music, leadership, debating and public speaking, to name just a few. Students who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to their studies and are involved in the life of the college have the opportunity to take on leadership roles at their respective year levels. There is a strong emphasis on effective communication between the college and families. Parents are invited and encouraged to be part of this college community. Mount Lilydale Mercy College has established numerous committees to provide a framework for involvement and contribution. Parent support is vital and parents may contribute in a variety of ways: Parents and Friends’ Association, Organisational Skills Program and Principal’s Advisory groups. In response to a request from the Catholic Education Office to meet the demand for boys’ secondary education, the Sisters of Mercy agreed to the changeover of the girls’ day and boarding, Prep – Year 12 school, to become a Year 7 – 12 secondary College. In January 1975, 144 boys were enrolled in what was the beginning of co-education. In the initial years the ratio of boys to girls was 1:5 in the senior classes and by 1981 the primary classes had been fazed out, facilities expanded and the ratio of boys and girls was equal. By the end of the first decade Mount Lilydale was recognized as a prominent Catholic College serving the needs of families in the Yarra Valley and is now recognized as a leading educational centre of excellence.

CONDUCTED by the Sisters of Mercy since 1896, Mount Lilydale Mercy College is a Catholic co-educational college located in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne at the gateway to the Yarra Valley. The college caters for the needs of students in an environment of care, based on gospel values. The religious order known as the Sisters of Mercy was founded in Ireland in 1831 by Catherine McAuley. Catherine was an extraordinary woman of deep faith and trust in God. She died in 1841, a mere 10 years after founding the order. In 1846, the first foundation in Australia was made in Perth. In July 1891, with sisters from Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary, a convent was established at Mansfield. From that foundation, a branch house was opened at Lilydale in 1896. In 1975, Mount Lilydale became a co-educational college after serving as a school for young ladies since its foundation. Through careful and continuous expansion, Mount Lilydale Mercy College today has an enrolment in excess of 1460 students. The first-class learning environment is animated by the spirit of freedom, love and mercy where each student experiences respect, self-worth and unconditional love. Mount Lilydale Mercy College endeavours to emphasise co-operation and justice, leading students to play their role in protecting and enhancing human values in the world of the 21st century.

No job too big or too small arborist at the Healesville Sanctuary and for many other well-known companies. But it was time for Matt to go out on his own, and for nine years he has worked hard at providing a reliable local business to residents. The team at Cut and Catch has spent many nights out in the storms, helping local families clean up after wild winds, some days spending 20 hours a day on the job. “We have 24-hour emergency callout services and can help with any types of tree removal,” Matt said. “This includes pruning and bracing, mulching and stump-grinding.” Cut and Catch is a small local company with friendly staff, a qualified arborist and is OHS compliant. Meanwhile, the business now has timber slabs available for sale. They also have access to a portable timber mill, for on-site milling. Call Matt today for a free quote and experience the honest, reliable advice and service that Cut and Catch stands by.

Whole lotta shakin’ A 2.8 MAGNITUDE earthquake shook parts of the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley last week. While the epicentre of the quake was found to be Pakenham, many local residents reported feeling the ground shaking. Via Facebook, Kaylie from Belgrave reported hearing the sound of the quake. “I could hear it coming from over the moun-
tain then the bang of the house and the rumble fade away in the distance,” she said. Tamara also reported feeling it from Mount Evelyn, as did Margaret from Woori Yallock. A summary of the earthquake by Geoscience Australia states that it occurred at 11.39pm on Tuesday, March 10.

AFTER the severe storms that hit the region on 28 February, Yarra Ranges has applied for National Disaster funding to help speed up the clean-up operation. As it stands, council expects the clean-up to take at least a month. The devastating storm left a trail of destruction around the Yarra Ranges, with council fielding hundreds of calls for assistance.
To add to the hefty clean-up task, the recent storm had followed on from two others, on 13 and 14 February. These had also caused significant damage to roads in the Dandenong Ranges. Yarra Ranges Director of Environment and Engineering, Mark Varmalis, said the scope of the clean-up operation should not be underestimated. “Cardinia Reservoir received 87mm of rain during this (recent) storm, which damaged roads around the hills, includ-
ing at Menzies Creek, Selby, The Patch and Kallista,” he said. “Road surface was washed off, debris built up and there were blocked drains and culverts. “There were also minor land-slips and a major landslip in Gordon Grove, Menzies Creek.” The storm also resulted in the tragic death of Eli Marnock, 2, from The Patch after a large gum tree fell on his family’s home.

Athletes shine at national champs By PETER DOUGLAS
LAST Saturday at Emerald Golf Club, players were faced with the task of playing a great round with only three clubs. The audible grinding of teeth was heard as players jettisoned some of their favourite clubs. When the chickens all came home to roost it was Leigh Morison (18, carrying his 1 wood, plus his 5 and 9 irons) who came in with 38 points. This was for the overall win and mastery of the B Grade cabbages. A Grade came down to a countback and it evolved that Dennis Fuller (16) just pipped Steve Town (14) when they both scored 32 points. Ian Scott (24) scored 35 and Dave Aitken (28) 34 to be the best of a pretty tatty bunch of scores Mike Litchfield picked up the nearest the pin gong on
Chelsea Thompson had to wait until Sunday afternoon to claim her silver medal for finishing second in her 200m. Especially impressive was the results of all our athletes, almost all achieving personal bests on the biggest stage. New members of all ages and abilities will always be welcomed at our club. For more information, results and training times, visit www.yarrarangesathletics. org.au
Before the meeting, Lateisha was the club’s only national champion, having won gold at last year’s championships. Lateisha went one better this year, picking up two gold medals, but has been joined in the national champion list by James Laven after his win in the 2000m steeplechase. Not to be outdone, James’s sister Georgia finished third in her 800m to claim a bronze medal.
YARRA Ranges Athletics athletes are the toast of Victoria this weekend after four athletes won medals at the Australian Junior Track and Field Championships in Sydney. Lateisha Willis was the undoubted star of the meet with two gold medals (90m hurdles and 200m hurdles) with a silver medal (4x100m relay).
Morison dominates
Game is set to tackle a killer UPPER Ferntree Gully’s round-one clash with the Heathmont Jets will also be the setting for an important fundraiser. After the Jets lost their own Simon Minson to Cystic Fibrosis last year, they will dedicate their first match of the year to raising money for the condition. Commemorative jumpers specifically
designed for the occasion will be auctioned off after the match and a luncheon will be held at the ground on the day. Club president Rob Parker said the players felt strongly about the cause. “The players wanted to do something to help, which is why we’ve organised Cystic Fibrosis round,” he said.
“We’re encouraging everyone to get down to the ground to support this very worthy cause.” The clash between Upper Ferntree Gully and Heathmont will be held at 2.10pm on Saturday 11 April, at H.E. Parker Reserve, Heathmont. To donate to Cystic Fibrosis Victoria visit www.cysticfibrosis.org.au/vic/
the 4th, Morison the 7th, Ken Sumsion the 12th, Broc Reynolds the 13th while John Fisher pocketed the pro pin pelf on the 18th. The ladies’ event showed a tight finish when two ladies could not be separated by the normal means. It was a dead heat between Phillipa Crossley and Kendra Sumsion so they had to share the spoils of victory. Ken Sumsion (30) was the star among the players at Overly Flat Golf (OFG) when he carded 45 stableford points. He was followed home at a respectful distance by Sepp Krummenacher (22) on 41 and Ken Hill (18) and Bobby Kennedy (19) who both had 40 points. Next Saturday is the qualifying round for the 4BBB championship, so there is quite a bit of jostling for the players with good form as partners.

The Monbulk cricket team emerged the number one team. 136098
Thirds claim victory in front of generous crowd IN AN entertaining weekend of cricket, the Monbulk Cricket Club third XI emerged premiers over The Basin Cricket Club. A generous crowd witnessed a great display. In the first innings, Monbulk batted first and the Basin really controlled their bowling innings well, restricting the Hawks, led by Tim Fogarty to a first innings of 4/85. Hamish Emmett batted with matu-
rity, opening the innings and weathering the Basin’s opening bowlers. Monbulk then took the field and worked really hard with the ball against a respectable batting line-up. Monbulk worked hard in the field, while the bowlers built pressure on the Basin batsmen. Rick Lamers was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets. The evergreen David Williams took two amazing catches behind the stumps.
Steve Utting also chimed in with two wickets. Ryan Howard took the first wicket of the day, finishing with two wickets. Josh Rak’s diving one-handed catch in the gully needs a special mention. At the end of day one, Monbulk had the Basin at 8/ 83, leaving Monbulk slightly ahead in the game on wickets. On day two, Monbulk came out to
bat and meant business. Matt Greggory and Rick Lamers looked settled from ball one and held off the Basin openers. The pick of the batsmen was allrounder Rick Lamers, who finished on 61 not out. Rick’s innings was well-balanced and ended with some big hitting towards the end of the innings, in conjunction with skipper Tim Fogarty. Monbulk was able to build consis-
tent partnerships and bat the full 35 overs of the second innings. Monbulk lost four more wickets and finished at 8/203. Lamers claimed the final wicket, finishing with five for the match. Monbulk third XI finished off the year in grand style after being the team to beat all year. The junior presentation night is on Sunday 22 March, and the senior presentation night is on 17 April.
Sharks in third flag win By STEVE BROWN FTGDCA JOHNSON Park has defeated Eildon Park by 48 runs to win its third Reeves Shield premiership at the weekend. The game was dominated by bowlers after tea on both days. On day one, Johnson Park captain, Andrew Devenish, elected to bat, with openers Bryn Gaunt and Steven Devenish both surviving early chances until Devenish departed with the score on 36. Feaver Medal winner Ben Stallworthy then joined Gaunt, moving the score to 74 before Adrian Baltruschaitis provided the ball of the day, having the dangerous Stallworthy caught behind for 12. Skipper Devenish and Gaunt made the most of the chances offered by the Panthers attack, and the pair went to the tea interval in a healthy position at 2/104. Panther’s leader, Cameron Cosstick, must have had a few stern words to his bowlers at the break, as they bowled at the top of off-stump to a ring field, creating scoring pressure resulting in wickets. Gaunt was out, gliding one to
slips for a patient 61 as mediumpacer Kyle Snyman stepped up for a return of 4/51 from 21 overs. Left-arm seamer Nathan CatonRobertson and Baltruschaitis each claimed two wickets. The Sharks lost their last five wickets for just 31 runs to be all out for 184 in the 78th over, losing any ascendancy they may have had at tea. Day two was a mirror image of the previous day's play, with the Morris brothers dismissed early, bringing together John Doak and wicketkeeper Nathan Hicks. The pair looked set until Hicks fell to a brilliant catch in the outfield by Barrington, but with Doak picking off everything pitched on leg stump, the Panthers were in the box seat at 3/78 at the main break. When play resumed, left-arm paceman Martin Weightman then bowled Doak for 32 with the score on 82 before Devenish threw the ball to his brother Steven and allrounder Stallworthy. Runs were hard to come by and a pressure catch on the boundary by Jordy Dunstone signalled the end for the Panthers who were at 7/59 after tea.
Off-spinner Devenish finished with 3/37 from 17, while Stallworthy claimed 3/39 from 28 overs, including 11 maidens to win the Stephen Lee Medal. In Decoite Shield, Ferntree Gully Footballers were up against neighbours Mountain Gate for the first time in a final and were in trouble early at 4/24, as Gators openers Cameron Wheeler and Marshall Bunting took control with the ball. Footballers skipper Ben Rawlings top scored with 45 but fell to Steve Deller on the last ball before tea. The steady fall of wickets saw the Ballers knocked over for 140 in a season that has seen them struggle with the bat against Mountain Gate’s attack. Bunting collected 3/30, Josh Linder 3/36 while Cam Wheeler’s 3/36 took his tally to 43 wickets for the season. At the completion of day one, the Gators were on track for the flag and promotion at 3/52. Footballers had their chances with a succession of dropped catches when play resumed, and it was left to Dewayne Bowden and Josh Linder to bring home the bacon for the Ga-
tors with four wickets to spare. Scores REEVES SHIELD Johnson Park 184 (Gaunt 61, D.
