A FATHER was held up at gunpoint in a terrifying early morning incident outside a Hampton Park childcare centre last week. Police believe the father was approached by an offender wielding what is now thought to be an imitation handgun about 6.30am on Friday 13 March

outside the Somerville Road childcare centre. The father had already dropped off his children when he was confronted by a youth wearing a yellow bandana over his face. The victim told police the attacker threatened to shoot him unless he handed over money.

Relay’s power to move HOPE - it’s more than just a word. On the weekend, more than 4000 people took part in the Casey Relay for Life - over 24 hours from Friday night to Saturday - and each of them had those four letters in mind. The participants had all been touched by cancer in some way, directly and indirectly, and they all hope for a cure and for peace. The relay committee is also

hopeful this year’s financial return will rival recent event figures after thousands descended on Akoonah Park over the two days. The Berwick relay’s Marisa Evans said that with 111 teams taking part and 4020 individual participants, this year’s event had raised a tick over $300,000 so far for the Cancer Council. “We raised $462,000 last year, I would not be surprised if we get near that figure again," she said.

“We still count for another four weeks." A very moving candelight ceremony on Friday evening allowed attendees to remember those lost and celebrate those still here, while a number of colourful characters walked laps and provided entertainment throughout the weekend. News photographers STEWART CHAMBERS and ROB CAREW were at the relay to capture all the action.

Road in pathetic state By BRIDGET SCOTT A TROUBLESOME Clyde North road maintained by the Cardinia Shire Council has been the hot topic of conversation for a group of frustrated residents. Corrugated and the scene of several accidents, McCormacks Road has caused a stir among its residents who are fed up with its constant bad condition. Sue Miller, who has lived along the road since 2000, said there were “heaps of accidents along here”. “The road is dangerous,” she said. “Since the freeway opened, it became a popular road to use to cut through - the traffic is unbelievable.” Previously owned by the City of Casey, the boundary road came under the jurisdiction of the Cardinia Shire more than five years ago. Cardinia Shire Council’s co-ordinator of operations Mark Howard said the road was “proactively inspected every 12 weeks in accordance with council’s road management plan”. “Any defects identified during these inspections are scheduled for maintenance. “Road users may report an issue with a road to council and these requests generate an additional inspection,” he said. He said McCormacks Road has been graded 11 times in the past year and was last graded on Tuesday this week. “Unfortunately, the dry weather is causing an increase in corrugations,” he said. Ms Miller said there were three accidents within a six-week period along the road, and last October a young woman flipped her car. Ms Miller’s neighbour Kerry Bolver has also taken issue with the road and said the residents would ultimately like

Standing alongside McCormacks Road, from left, Emma Catlin, Sue Miller, Michael Bohmer and Councillor Geoff Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Ablett. 136305 the City of Casey to take over the road again. Councillor Geoff Ablett said the road was in a very unsafe state, and he had had reports of people driving along it at two to three kilometres per hour. At a council meeting on Tuesday night, he asked that officers have further discussions with Cardinia Council re-

garding the issues Casey residents have with the maintenance of the road. “We need to find a sensible solution, something needs to be done,” he said. Cr Ablett also suggested that the CEOs of both councils get together and come back with a report in a month’s time to find a solution. Ms Bolvers said it was a major safety

issue and the road had a high volume of traffic. “A lot of people use it as shortcut from Cranbourne to Pakenham and vice versa,” she said. Ms Bolvers said none of the residents had been able to get in contact with Cardinia Shire Council staff.

A 37-YEAR-old man from Hampton Park was apprehended by Mornington fisheries officers last weekend when he was found to have 16 times the legal limit of abalone. A member of the public alerted officers as well as police when they saw a man acting suspiciously in a car alongside a road in Mornington on Saturday and then later found a bag of abalone in the bushes. Following the tip-off, officers concealed themselves near the bag and waited for someone to collect it. About 45 minutes later the car returned and a man checked on the bag then left. Not long after this he returned again and after he waited for passing traffic to subdue, and loaded the bag into his boot. Fisheries officers then pounced and discovered 83 abalone in his car

boot, 26 of which were undersize. The haul as well as the man’s diving equipment was seized and he is due to be charged on summons for exceeding the abalone catch limit and taking/possessing undersize abalone. A member from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning said each year in the Port Phillip area, there are generally about 35 to 40 court cases of abalone theft plus hundreds of penalty infringements notices issued for minor offences a year. They also said there is believed to be a black market for abalone in Melbourne, “which is why we ask the public to report any suspicious or illegal fishing activity to 13 fish.” “Abalone theft threatens the sustainability of the bay and opportunities for future generations of fishers,” they said.

A Hampton Park man was apprehended after he was found to be in possession of 16 times the legal limit of abalone. 136279

FIVE offenders who assaulted a man at a Cranbourne McDonald’s and stole his car on the weekend are believed to have links to bikie gangs. The 20-year-old victim was leaving the fast food store on the South Gippsland Highway around 2.30am on Saturday (14 March) when he was confronted by the five men in the car park. One of the offenders asked the victim if he wanted to buy some ice or cannabis and when he refused, it’s understood the offender head-butted the victim three times and demanded his car keys. The offenders then made off with the victim’s car, which was later found. A 24-year-old and 25-yearold were arrested in relation to the incident and clothing adorned with bikie colours has been seized. Police are currently investigating whether the offenders are affiliated with a bikie gang. It’s also believed the offender who head-butted the victim was using crutches and wearing a moonboot at the time of the attack. The victim was taken to Casey Hospital with minor injuries to his cheek. Anyone with any information on the other offenders is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

cage fighting within the municipality. “I was horrified when I heard it would be permitted, Cr Stapledon said. “It’s a barbaric style of fighting and you’re hurting other people. “It’s violence in an arena. The councillor also asked what happened to those who didn’t make the grade to be cage fighters. Cr Crestani says “people have a right to participate in this sport if they like, saying boxing could be just as bad. Cr Gary Rowe said cage fighting was a violent form of mixed martial arts and was a bad example for the young people in the City of Casey. After the motion was carried, Cr Crestani called for a division.

CITY of Casey councillors were divided in their opinions over the controversial sport of cage fighting at a meeting on Tuesday. Some said they would have no issue if it came to the municipality. Mayfield Ward Councillor Amanda Stapledon moved a motion expressing her views against the sport and encouraged council to ask for a local law to be put in place to prevent it coming to Casey. However the motion was met with resistance, with Cr Rosalie Crestani dissenting. Cr Wayne Smith also opposed Cr Stapledon’s motion. “If we start shutting things like this down it will send them underground, Cr Crestani said. “I don’t think we should

step into this area. However Cr Stapledon said she wanted to prevent cage fighting from coming to the City of Casey in the first place. In support of her motion, Cr Stapledon read from Hansard where Minister for Local Government Ms Natalie Hutchins told parliament that “councils are sovereign bodies and they “can introduce their own bylaws if they choose to do so, they have the right to do so. In her motion, which was carried, Cr Stapledon asked council to write to the Honourable Natalie Hutchins, MP, Minister for Local Government advising of council’s opposition to cage fighting both within the City of Casey and the State of Victoria. Council will also seek further clarification on how best to prepare a local law disallowing

4. What is your favourite film? Super Troopers. 5. If you could go anywhere on holiday where would you go? Canada. Amazing scenery, wildlife and fishing. 6. What was your first car? A 1977 HX Kingswood sedan with a 253 V8, (a lot of good times in that car).

7. Tell us about a funny incident that occurred while you were working? I was working at Frankston HWP in an unmarked police vehicle and plain clothes. My partner and I were patrolling the Carrum Downs industrial area when a Holden Clubsport came up behind our police vehicle flashing his headlights and swerving from side to side trying to intimidate us to move out of his way. As we turned left into another street, the Holden Clubsport also turned left around the outside of the police car, spinning the tyres, with smoke bellowing from the vehicle and fishtailing up the road in front of us. We hit the flashing lights and siren. You should have seen his face when we spoke to him... priceless! His vehicle was impounded under the hoon legislation and as the vehicle was being towed away, I gave my partner a big high five. A member of the public observed the high five and incident and sent a letter into Victoria Police Ethical Standards Division stating how happy he was with us impounding that vehicle as the driver did the same thing every day in front of his factory.

Connecting people and communities CN He also commented on how impressed he was to see police enjoying their work. 8. If you could have anyone over for dinner, who would it be and why? Peter Brock. An Australian motorsport legend. I’m sure he would have had some great stories to tell. 9. Who is your favourite band or singer? Rock: AC/DC. ’80s: Depeche Mode and U2 and I’m very partial to a bit of Shania Twain. 10. What safety message do you have for the motoring public? Parents, be aware that your driving behaviours influence the way your children end up driving. Be a role model for their safe driving in the future. As a father of four children, I know they see and hear everything you say and do behind the wheel. Keep your children safe on the roads, there is nothing worse, as a police officer, than having to tell a parent that their child is not coming home. Unfortunately, I have had to that on too many occasions. Drive safely, please.

Fresh leaf for St Pat’s THE Blue Bears group at Rangebank Preschool celebrated with a different colour on Tuesday as the young ones got into the spirit of St Patrick’s Day. The children took part in a range of green activities such as decorating and eating shortbread shamrocks, decorating shamrocks and they also enjoyed some messy fun with green paint. All children were encouraged to come along dressed in a green outfit and were given a small insight into Ireland itself when they were shown a map, as well as a shamrock leaf.

Nominate the volunteers who help make Casey happy!

An ice forum at Narre Warren last week gave representatives from local sporting clubs an insight into how they can help stop the plague. 134189

Ice breakers By BRIDGET SCOTT A DRUG forum held in Narre Warren last week confronted its guests with frightening facts about ice and urged the local community to assist police in the fight to end the local plague. Last Wednesday 11 March, representatives from sporting clubs throughout the City of Casey gathered for a drug forum aimed at helping people come up with an official drug policy for their respective clubs. Around 50 people turned out for the forum led by the Australian Drug Foundation, which urged people to become part of the Good Sports Program. Geoff Munro, National Policy manager for the Australian Drug Foundation was a guest speaker at the event and urged people to create a policy as a way of prevention.

He said sporting clubs provided a protective environment, with local coaches often acting as a mentor to those they were in charge of. “The most important person in the club is the coach,” he said. “The coach sets the standard, but so do we all.” He said a drug policy was invaluable and was a formal statement which provided guidelines for people at the club which could act as a deterrent from drug use. Local Inspector and area commander Paul Breen also spoke at the event and asked guests and the wider community to help police stop the spread of ice. “People look at police and say what are you doing about it, but what is everyone else doing

about it?” he asked. “We are not winning the fight.” “It’s prevalent.” Peter Wearn, drug expert and director of YSAS also spoke at the forum and gave the audience an insight into the reality of the drug and the effect it has on users. Mr Wearn explained that ice causes the “flooding and release” of people’s own chemicals into the brain and described it as “pleasure at a price.” “It creeps up on people and deregulates their emotional response,” he said. “It compromises people’s ability to think normally.” The forum was one of many held throughout Victoria, with some local sporting clubs already part of the Good Sports Program.

Each year thousands of volunteers contribute to making the City of Casey a happy place to live. Parking woes spill over By BRIDGET SCOTT RESIDENTS living near Lyndhurst Primary School say they don’t know what more they can do to stop people from parking across their driveways and along their nature strips during school peak hours. Resident Amber Barton said it was a daily occurence with people collecting or dropping children off at the nearby school. “There are cars literally parking in your driveway and then people are walking across the road,” she said. Ms Barton said in one instance a car

parked right across her driveway and she was unable to get out of her house for more than 40 minutes. She also said only this week she saw a woman drive straight into her neighbour’s driveway and leave her car there. “It’s just not good enough,” she said. She said her family had also had people park across their nature strips after which her partner put stakes on the grass to deter this. “We’re part of a body corporate, so we have to maintain it,” she said. However, the couple found themselves between a rock and a hard place

after council forced them to remove the stakes. She said parking had been a problem since the school opened in 2011. Lyndhurst Primary School principal Gregory Lacey said the school was aware of a number of issues around parking - including parents using staff parking spaces and disabled spots. “It has been discussed at length at school council and has been highlighted in our school newsletter a number of times over recent years,” he said. “We continue to communicate with parents about parking etiquette and safety. There is plenty of parking around our

school if parents are prepared to walk a short distance, and we continue to remind our parents of the concerns of our neighbours as well as the serious safety issues for children.” He said staff had designated parking spaces within the school to allow for more space outside the grounds. Resident Steve Devries said as the volume of students continued to increase each year, the problem got worse. “It’s putting more pressure on surrounding streets,” he said. He suggested that people park at the nearby football oval, but said people were “too impatient.”

Young stars shine By BRIDGET SCOTT TWO students from a Hampton Park primary school have lit up the stage and dominated the field with a bright future ahead of them. River Gum Primary School students Ashley Lucey-Jannert and Patrick Sinnema have both had huge success so far this year. After the Department of Education and Training’s Performing Arts Unit auditioned students from government schools throughout Victoria, Ashley was picked to star in the Victorian State School Spectacular which is set to hit the stage at Hisense Arena on Saturday 12 September. Ashley has also been selected to take part in a performance event for the Governor of Victoria and the Minister for

Education with other members of the spectacular company. This event also serves to welcome overseas secondary students who have come to Victoria to continue their education. If this wasn’t enough excitement for the school, nineyear-old Patrick Sinnema has also had some good news of his own. He has been nominated to try out for the School Sports Victoria AFL team. He was nomainted by his local football club. The centre-half forward plays for the Hampton Park Redbacks and has won the best and fairest for the past two years. He also came fifth in the best and fairest in the South East Juniors league, playing a year above his age group. The Western Bulldogs supporter may just be AFL’s future super star forward.

Gas leak closes station A CRANBOURNE petrol station had to be closed down for an hour while police and the CFA investigated a gas leak. It understood the gas leak was detected in a valve by a customer who was filling up his car at the Caltex Service Station on Thompsons Road, near Evans Road, around 5.30pm on Thursday 12 March. The customer quickly moved his car and reported the leak to the attendant, after which police and a CFA burn-off unit were called in to secure the area. The station was closed for an hour while the site was secured.

Casey honour By BRIDGET SCOTT A NEW Avenue of Honour has been proposed for the City of Casey as the centenary of the Gallipoli landing fast approaches. This would be the eighth Avenue of Honour in the City of Casey, with existing ones along High Street in Berwick, South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne, Memorial Drive in Narre Warren North, Harkaway Road in Harkaway, Church Street in Berwick, South Gippsland Highway in Tooradin and Wilson and Scanlan streets in Berwick. River Gum Ward councillor Wayne Smith said this would be “a great opportunity to add another one to the City of Casey. Councillor Smith proposed the new avenue for the recently redeveloped Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, but said it was important the entire city benefitted from this. “The 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing is a good chance to add another one, he said. “We are also very proud of our existing ones. Councillor Rafal Kaplon also suggested one for Heatherton Road. Councillor Smith, whose motion was carried, said there had already been some inquiries made to VicRoads. Following the council meeting, council officers will now make urgent contact with the relevant sections of VicRoads to inquire if council can plant suitable trees along new sections of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road. A report will come back to council at the next meeting with the results of discussions and recommendations on how council can move forward with the project. Council will also write to VicRoads and ask them to explore the possibility of one along the existing Heatherton Road, as part of the Melbourne Boulevard Strategy and in recognition of the 100-year anniversary.

A MASKED gatecrasher armed with a knife who demanded a partygoer hand over his mobile phone was urged to give it back by his apparent accomplices. The three offenders stormed the Cranbourne North party just after midnight on Saturday, with one holding a knife and wearing a bandana over his face. Several partygoers fled the Ayres Close property through an adjacent paddock. It’s believed one of the victims who fled then returned to the house where he was confronted by the armed offender who held the knife to his stomach and demanded his phone. But it’s understood the two other intruders appeared reluctant and convinced the armed offender to give the victim back his phone. All three intruders then fled through the nearby paddock. Two of the intruders aren’t believed to have been disguised, and police are urging anyone with information about their appearance to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Treatment from head to toe FROM sleep problems to divorce and separation Casey Psychology Centre in Cranbourne offers psychological assistance from head to toe. Specialising in adolescent and adult mental health services, the bulk-billing centre can assist with a wide range of psychological issues including adjustment difficulties, anxiety and panic, assertiveness and self-esteem, bipolar affective disorder, borderline personality disorder, depression, drug and alcohol abuse and eating disorders and body image concerns. Owner and clinical psychologist, Shona Dutton said the newly established practice was opened in response

to a recognised need for quality services and community growth. “We pride ourselves on offering the community exceptional quality and affordable psychological care, for this reason free psychological services are available for all students, health care and pension card holders with a referral from a GP,” Ms Dutton said. The practice, which works predominately with adults and adolescents, also provides care for forensic and criminal behavior, grief and loss, post-natal depression, school adjustment and bullying, stress management, trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder and workplace issues.

“Our mission is to bring high quality, affordable, caring and compassionate services to all residents of Casey and the surrounding areas,” Ms Dutton said. The community-focused practice also shines a light on bipolar in the Casey region, running a 10-week relapse prevention program based on cognitive behaviour therapy principles. “The program is designed to help people improve their understanding and coping with bipolar disorder,” she said. “The aim of the group is to gain an understanding of your mood symptoms, learn practical strategies for

Ladies harness the night WHAT better way to support a good cause than by kicking up your heels and enjoying a fun night out at the local trots with friends. Girls Night Out is on again complete with food, fashion, entertainment and racing - proudly brought to you by the Cranbourne Harness Racing Club. The night, to raise funds for the Women’s Cancer Foundation, will include live entertainment, a fashion show, photo booth fun along with an Austin Powers impersonator roving around and entertaining the crowd. There will also be great prizes up for grabs on the night. Jo McKinnon will host the evening and share stories of her own time in the industry. But it’s not just a ladies night out, Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Neil Bainbridge has encouraged everyone to grab their tickets.

“Whether you’re a racing enthusiast or have never been to the races before, the Girls Night Out caters for everyone, he said. “Going to the trots already provides for a fun occasion, but the club has teamed that up with some great entertainment and food and beverage package to create a fantastic experience. He urged everyone to get a table together and secure their spots for a night that is set to be one to remember. Cost per ticket is $75, or $65 early bird price until 28 February, which includes entry to the race course, race book, threecourse meal, beverage package (beer, wine and soft drink) and entertainment. To book your spot, call the Cranbourne Harness Racing Club on 5996 1300 to book.

New tennis pavilion ... it’s an ace PEARCEDALE tennis goers can rally around once more with redevelopments to the local pavilion now completed. Works to the Pearcedale Recreation Reserve Tennis Club Pavilion are now complete with the City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland officially opening an ace new facility on Monday 2 March following the $620,000 upgrade. Council replaced the old pa-

vilion with a new communal area, kitchen, accessible toilets, changing rooms and two storage areas included in the new facility. Councillor Mick Morland commended council for the completed works in Pearcedale. “The old pavilion no longer met the expectations of the community, so the old building was torn down and this fantastic new facility built in its place, he said.

“The project demonstrates council’s commitment to providing excellent facilities for local clubs and the community to engage in sport and physical activity. He also added that council acknowledged the importance of sustainable sporting facilities in the area. “Clubs, like the Pearcedale Tennis Club, play an important

role in creating a strong community, as well as maximising opportunities for residents, and we are keen to see them succeed, he said. “The new pavilion has already been used to host a number of club functions, including the junior presentation night, and it is fantastic to see it being embraced by the club.

By BRIDGET SCOTT A BUSINESS owner who found herself jobless and homeless all on the same day has turned her life around in less than two years. Fran Rourke was made redundant from her previous job, and returned home on the same day to find an eviction notice on her door. The landlord wanted to move back in, and she had no choice but to leave. “I found myself unemployed and homeless, she said. The Cranbourne woman managed to find herself another rental property a short time after, however she wasn’t able to advertise her new business from here. Finally, she has secured her

own home, and with the help of a government program her business is now smooth sailing. After she lost her job, Ms Rourke started to receive Newstart payments but this didn’t rest easy with her. Not long after this, she discovered the NEIS program, the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme. An Australian Governmentrun program, this system helps budding business owners get the kick start they need when first entering their respective industry. “They support you for the first 12 months while you’re building your business and doing all the leg work, she said. “They provide you with the same amount of money as what

you would get from Newstart payments. Ms Rourke also attended Chisolm Institute where she did a small business course for three months. She now runs a successful quilting and embroidery business. She conducts classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and said it’s “doing pretty good. Ms Rourke had a small piece of advice for other small business owners of people who find themselves in a similar position. “Just get out and do it, because nobody else will do it for you, she said. “I could’ve stayed in the hole I dug myself, but I had two girls I wanted to raise, I had to do it for myself.

All on the line in the ring ADAM Brooks is putting it all on the line on Saturday 28 March at WarZone wrestling when he takes on KrackerJak in what could be Brooks’ last stand as a potential singles champion. Before agreeing to a rematch Lord Mark Williamson had the contract changed, preventing Brooks from challenging for the WarZone belt if he loses his next battle. This change will stay in place for as long as the belt stays around KrackerJak’s waist. Brooks passed out from injuries during WarZone 21 against KrackerJak, making the up and coming clash a battle not to be missed. This clash will be Brooks' last shot at the WarZone title and proving himself to the crowds and the kracking reigning winner. WarZone 22 will also introduce a new young gun, known for his arrogance, JXT. JXT will finally step into the WarZone ring to face off against the returning favourite Craig ‘Pitbull’ Cole, who is currently undefeated in the singles competition. The question remains, will Pitbull be run out by the new wave of challengers, or will he defend his ground like he has done so many times before? The game-changing round will be held at Berwick Secondary College Performing Arts Centre. Doors open at 6.30pm with hot food and soft drink sold at the venue. To book tickets call 0459 362 423.

Top medal for Spoljaric By JARROD POTTER VENTURING into uncharted DDCA territory, Cranbourne captain Steve Spoljaric was once again named the best in the association as he earned his fourth Alan Wookey Medal. Spoljaric, fresh to Cranbourne this season after four years at Parkfield, continued to be the form player of the competition as he rattled off 623 runs and 31 wickets in the regular season. Although he trailed throughout the night - first to Springvale South skipper Craig Slocombe then the Bloods spinning all-rounder Ruwantha Kellepotha - a sixvote haul against his old side Parkfield in Round 9 pushed the Cranbourne allrounder to the front. Spoljaric finished on 31 votes, ahead of Kellepotha (27) and Mordialloc duo Monto Perera (24) and Chathura Athukorala (18).

“It’s alright I suppose… it’s part of my job isn’t it,” Spoljaric said after winning his fourth Wookey Medal. “I thoroughly enjoy it.” Without hyperbole, DDCA president Michael Hawking called Spoljaric “the best player to ever play in the association” and Spoljaric’s numbers certainly stack up that way throughout his five DDCA seasons. After coming across from Victorian Premier Cricket where he won first grade’s highest accolade - the Ryder Medal in 2007/08 with Hawthorn-Monash University - Spoljaric has plundered all Turf 1 opposition for 3334 runs at 52.09 and 132 wickets at 13.55 combined. His final knock of 2014/15 - a gallant 88 chasing Heinz Southern Districts’ 216 in the Turf 1 semi-final - was what Spoljaric thought was his best yet - a scary sign of things to come from the dominant batsman.

“Sad to say that it was actually probably the best I’ve hit them all year, so I was probably going to be immoveable I suppose if we didn’t run out of partners, but hey, that’s cricket,” Spoljaric said. Earning the minor premiership will be what Spoljaric looks back on most fondly from season 2014/15 as Cranbourne moved from Turf 1 new kids on the block to ladder-leaders in their first season back up. He hopes the next generation of Cranbourne’s 1st XI learned a lot from their first Turf 1 season and he thought there were still bigger things to come down at Casey Fields. “Finishing top, when I thought at the start of the year we’d be doing well to play finals, with what we had,” Spoljaric said. “Being so dominant during the year - I just hope they all learn something, that’s the key and I’m sure they have.”

Cavaliers take the Fortress By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Casey Cavaliers men have got off to an ideal start to their journey as a Big V basketball Division 1 team, knocking off Melbourne Uni at ‘The Fortress’ in Cranbourne on Saturday night. In a game that ebbed and flowed from start to finish, Stewart Baird’s men bounced back from a horror shooting performance in the second quarter to record a seven point win, 71-64. And the coach admitted that the result was a relief telling the News: “I didn’t realise it leading up to it but I must’ve been putting myself under a bit of pressure. “I felt quite a bit of relief afterwards and my neck and shoulders were locked tight as if I’d been lifting weights all day. It was crazy!” Casey’s imposing front-court trio of Matt Witherden (15 points, 10 rebounds), Brent Hobba (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Lester Strong (18 points, 10 rebounds) was instrumental in the win and each finished with big double-doubles. “It was great to get the new group out on the floor and get a real win in real conditions, and get off to the best possible start,” Baird said. “Matty (Witherden) certainly had a year last year where he and Matt Pebole were the two go-to guys, so there was some curiosity as to how the situation would play out offensively but each of those three finished with a double-double and I think that’s probably the perfect scenario. “If they can consistently get doubledoubles then we’re going to win a lot more games than we lose, that’s for sure.” Moving forward, the Cavaliers will continue to work on their spacing on the floor, which Baird said “still needs a bit of work”, and their transition from defence to offence. “We just didn’t push it hard enough last weekend,” Baird said. “It surprised me because it’s something that we’ve done a lot of work on over the summer. Matt Witherden shone as one third of an imposing big three for the Casey Cavaliers on Saturday night, finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds against Melbourne Uni. 136083 “I just said to the guys to watch the Picture: JARROD POTTER way the Youth League boys play - they

rocket up and down the floor and we’ve got to get more in that mindset of pushing the ball and trying to take advantage of everything we can.” Baird was impressed with the Cavaliers’ guard play on Saturday night with Steve Michalski and James Deneefe running the point. But Baird emphasised the importance of his men continuing to look for Bevan Camilleri on the perimeter. “We need to make sure we find him when he’s open, because he didn’t see enough of it on Saturday night.” Next up for the Cavaliers is a tough early-season back-to-back this weekend - at home against Geelong on Saturday night, and away to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon. “Geelong will be interesting, they got 94 points up on Saturday night against Sunbury, who scored 90, so it was a bit of a shootout,” Baird said. “I’m hoping we can make them uncomfortable and lock them down and, hopefully, that’ll go a long way to seeing a win. “Chelsea did a great job against last year’s premiers and got a win on the road, so that definitely won’t be an easy game either. “It’s a tough weekend and at the end of the day if we can be 3-0 on Sunday night then we’ll have done a hell of a job. If we split it, well that’s probably pretty satisfying as well. But we’re aiming to win them both.” The opening weekend of the Big V season was also a winning one for the Cavaliers’ Division 2 women’s side, which demolished newcomers Pakenham 96-24. The Pakenham side was outclassed from pillar to post in its inaugural Big V game, while Casey - a likely championship contender - flexed its muscles. In a particularly even team performance, Jade Foot, Rebecca Magdich and Samantha Johnson led the way with 15 points apiece. One of the highlights of the night was a clash of sisters, with Magdich taking on her big sister Mel.

Gippsland Storm Elite Netball Development Club (Monash Storm’s development club) will again be hosting the event. “This is one of the best parts of our alignment with Monash - the ability to bring this level of our great sport to our region on a regular basis.” Gippsland Storm President Brendan Mur-

The PRC’s relocation from its former home on Racecourse Road, to a state-of-theart facility built on 608-acres of former farming land, is almost complete, with finishing touches taking place ahead of the club’s Grand Opening Raceday on Thursday 26 March. The PRC’s grand opening raceday promises to be a beauty, with free general admission, great racing, live music, and a jumping castle for the kids providing attractive options for the whole family. The PRC is also inviting everyone who attends to sign the commemorative guest book which will be located at

NARRE Warren’s rising tennis ace Destanee Aiava has added another accomplishment to an already staggering list after again being selected in Australia’s Junior Fed Cup team, which will take part in an Oceania qualifying event in Shepparton next month. A host of the nation’s best young tennis stars will head to the Shepparton and Tatura Lawn Tennis Clubs from 8 to 13 April for the qualifying event, which also includes the Junior Davis Cup team. Aiava will be joined by fellow Victorian Jaimee Fourlis, and Seone Mendez from New South Wales. Both Aiava and Mendez represented Australia at the world finals last year, while Fourlis will make her first appearance at Junior Fed Cup

level. Australia has a proud history in both competitions, having won the Junior Davis Cup six times and the Junior Fed Cup five times since the international teams competition began in 1985. Ahead of this year’s Shepparton event, both teams will take part in a training camp with former world number one and Tennis Australia performance director Pat Rafter, Davis Cup greats Tony Roche and John Newcombe, current Australian Davis Cup team captain Wally Masur, and former Australian women’s player Louise Pleming. Aiava was named Female Junior Athlete of the Year at Australian Tennis’ night of nights, the Newcombe Medal, last year.

Following an extended training block in 2013, she started the last calendar year off with a bang - reaching the third round of the Australian Junior Open at Melbourne Park in her first attempt at her home Grand Slam event. Still just 14-years-old, she followed that up with another third round appearance this year. Destanee is coached by Andrea Stoltenberg - wife of former Australian world number 19 Jason, and herself a former WTA player. When the News first spoke with Aiava way back in 2012, she explained that she pinned a list of goals on the fridge and ticked them off one-by-one as she accomplished them. On that list with a bullet “Become world number one”.

Sport Eagles had no answers VSDCA SOUTH EAST 1ST XI - qualifying final BOWING out at the first hurdle, Endeavour Hills (79) had little in the tank to stop the might of Caulfield (8/289cc). Caulfield was led by a trio of half-centuries at the top of the order as Peter Cross (55) and Ricky Damiano (53) combined with Luke Bartholomeusz (63). Bartholomeusz’s innings - plied off 170 balls against the Eagles’ attack - took the match all but out of Endeavour Hills’ grasp as he pushed the tally through to 3/191 before he was finally dismissed. Shane Peake, four wickets, was the best of the Endeavour Hills contingent as he claimed the crucial scalps of Bartholomeusz and Damiano. Matt Foenander, two wickets, and captain Chris Pereira also held up their ends to try and halt Caulfield’s charge. Thomas Hafil (25) held on as long as he could against Caulfield - seeing off the worst of the new ball - but ran out of partners as the top order folded. Cameo knocks from Ben Swift (18) and Richard Saniga (14 not out) weren’t enough to push the Eagles through to the semi-finals. Reigning premier Noble Park (203) was defeated by Ormond (256).

Magpies return to Turf 1 fold after break By JARROD POTTER DDCA Turf 2 Grand Final A ONE-YEAR vacation in Turf 2 is over for Narre Warren (6/147) as it claimed first-innings points against St Brigids/St Louis (143) after clawing its way back from a collapse. St Brigids never got out of first gear after deciding to bat first. Dean Wheeler (4/29), skipper Kaushalya Weeraratne (2/41) and John Mentiplay (2/46) struck through to force the Saints to set a minimal target. But the Saturday gremlins at Arch Brown Reserve continued to rear their head as Narre Warren

slumped - Wendell Perumal (39) was the only Magpie to soar from the top of the order as his team mates crumbled. Perumal’s dismissal was part of the procession that left Narre Warren 6/97. The revival came from Sanjeewa Weerasinghe (53) - who smacked a run-a-ball half-ton alongside Jarryd Straker (21) to take first innings points. Weerasinghe slogged his way past St Brigids - taking one over for three fours and a whopping six at Arch Brown Reserve. Another six would ensure the Magpies swooped on the first-innings victory on the first day of the scheduled two-day

grand final. But there was still a second day and Narre Warren succumbed early to give St Brigids a sniff at a reverse outright. They would pummel 9/165 declared off 33 overs, with Wheeler (5/47) and Weeraratne (3/82) snaring the scalps, to leave some headaches for Narre Warren approaching stumps. With 30 overs to see off, Perumal (25 not out) and Wheeler (18 not out) dug in to ensure there would be no St Brigids’ celebrations as Narre celebrated a two-fold triumph. Firstly, its Turf 2 flag - dusting off

a 10-year drought for the 1st XI and its triumphant return to Turf 1 in 2015/16, switching places with Coomoora. In DDCA Turf 3-6 results, Aspendale (330) powered into Turf 2 ahead of North Dandenong (175) via a resounding century from Travis Campbell (135 not out), Turf 4 belonged to St Marys (7/152) after Charith Anthony (52) helped his side glide home against Lynbrook (147), Parkdale (6/135) picked up a Turf 5 flag over St Brigids/St Louis (134) and Aspendale (147) made it two-in-turf as it picked up Turf 6 triumph over Narre North (124).

Release the hounds By JARROD POTTER DDCA Turf 1 - Grand Final MORDIALLOC (9/246) looked buried against Heinz Southern Cobras (61). The Bloodhounds were sent begging from the crease in droves on the first morning of the DDCA Turf 1 grand final as the Cobras struck... and struck... and then struck a few more times to leave Mordialloc in all sorts of trouble at 6/58. Justin Davis (3/63) seared through the top order - taking Tim Richardson (8) and Mordy skipper Monto Perera (0) in a single over rampage. Once Ian Daniel’s (21) gallant knock came to an end, it looked like Heinz would take the points on the first day... but that’s not the end of the tale by a long margin. Chathura Athukorala (72) turned the match on his own shoulders anchoring a pair of lower-order 50 run partnerships to keep the Bloodhounds alive. Firstly with Stuart Squires (13) then a sensational stand with Cameron Tomkinson (62 not out) before Athukorala was finally sent to the sheds after Davis snared the must-have wicket. But

the Bloodhounds kept sniffing out runs as Tomkinson and Nick Connellan (29) went the tonk. Connellan connected with a couple that flew onto rooves and Cheltenham Road to push Mordialloc past 200. They would finish on 246 with the 19-year-old Tomkinson undefeated in his first, and likely most memorable, Turf 1 half-century. Michael Davies (3/48) toiled for the Cobras - running through 26 overs and 14 maidens in his inaugural Turf 1 grand final appearance while Paul Stockdale (3/79) was the other major wicket taker. Sunday belonged to Mordialloc as the Bloodhounds ripped through the Cobras (61). Patience was a virtue no Heinz bat could afford as reckless shots gave Mordialloc the upper hand. Cobras’ captain Trevor Davies (25) top scored and with Matt Cox (10) proved the best two of the Reedy Reserve brigade. Ian Daniel (4/11) and Chathura Athukorala (2/17) excelled with the new leather to wipe out any chance of Heinz getting its first Turf 1 premiership, before Bloodhounds skipper Monto Perera (3/19) finished the job.

The captain led the way for Heinz, but unfortunately it was only 25 as Trevor Davies and his men struggled against Mordialloc’s Picture: JARROD POTTER bowling. 136078 “It was disappointing, but we’ll learn from it,” Cobras’ captain Trevor Davies said. “I think we bowled well most of the day (Saturday) and we bowled well at the end as the pitch flattened right out. “Winning the toss and batting first, you can take those risks and

we were in a similar position (to Mordialloc) second innings, but had to consolidate to try and get to the total. “Fourth year up (in Turf 1) it’s a good achievement for us, so we’ve definitely come a long way.” It is Mordialloc’s first DDCA Turf 1 premiership.

Sport WGCA - SEMI-FINALS

Kooweerup legend Matt Davey played a key role with the ball in his side’s semi-final win over Merinda Park. The Demons are set to Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS once again face Cardinia in a grand final. 135981

Team of the decade By RUSSELL BENNETT WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION PREMIER DIVISION - GRAND FINAL PREVIEW KOOWEERUP has been the team of the past decade in the top flight of the West Gippsland Cricket Association, and this weekend the Demons are aiming for immortality. Not since the late 1960s to mid1970s has a WGCA side won four first XI premierships in six years. Of all clubs, it was Kooweerup that achieved the feat back then. But these Demons will be out to re-write the record books of the Premier era on the weekend at Beaconsfield’s Holm Park Road when they take on their arch-rival Cardinia in a repeat of last season’s decider. After rolling Tooradin and Merinda Park respectively in the semifinals on the weekend, Cardinia and Kooweerup will face off for the fifth time in a WGCA top tier grand final since the 2006/07 decider at Paken-

ham’s Toomuc Reserve. And there’s not much - if anything - they don’t know about each other. While some of the players have changed over the years, the two teams’ tough, uncompromising style of cricket has remained. It’s a trademark shared by both. So much of top-level cricket takes place between the ears at the best of times, but this weekend at Beaconsfield that statement will be elevated to a new stratosphere. Vivid, painful memories of the Demons’ triumph last season are still firmly etched in the minds of many of Cardinia’s first XI. Set just 159 for victory, the wounded Bulls were rolled for just 126. So, Cardinia skipper Neil Barfuss, player-coach Simon Parrott, aggressive stroke-maker Alex Nooy, wicket-keeper Luke Turner, and spearhead Dean Henwood will line up for the anthem on Saturday with one thing on their minds - payback.

Make no mistake about it, either. The mind games have already started between the two sides. With so little likely to separate them onfield, both Cardinia and Kooweerup are searching for every competitive advantage they can get. “We’re very happy to be in a grand final but we’re not finished yet,” said Barfuss. “We owe them one.” Yet, the skipper of a side that’s so far undefeated this season refuses to buy into its win-loss record. His men have had a few wake-up calls along the way. “The undefeated thing doesn’t matter anymore - this is a grand final now. “There’s only one game left and that’s the one that matters.” Barfuss didn’t hesitate when it came to naming a potential Kooweerup match-winner outside of Chris O’Hara and skipper Michael Giles at the top of the order. “You can’t go past Matty Dav-

Jay Broomhall hopes the party will continue for Cranbourne Meadows when it takes on Officer in this weekend’s WGCA District Division grand final. 135983 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

It’s all or nothing By DAVID NAGEL WGCA - GRAND FINAL PREVIEW DISTRICT CRANBOURNE MEADOWS will be looking to break a 25-year-old drought when it takes on Officer in this weekend’s WGCA District Division grand final at Officer. The Rebels’ first XI has not tasted success since Peter ‘Bun’ O’Hare led his side to A Grade victory in 1988/89. A win against the Bullants will see the Rebels return to the WGCA’s top-flight, Premier Division, for next season. Skipper Brent Murdoch said the talk around the league at the start of the year - putting them in the crosshairs of relegation - only motivated them further though. “Just pumped - we were touted round one in what was called ‘relegation round’ between us and SFX,”

Murdoch said. “So what we’re able to do this year as a team has been great. To sneak into fourth spot, we knew we were always a chance.” Batting is the area where the match will be won and lost for Murdoch’s men with Murdoch (639 runs), Shannon Marum (416) and John Emery (357) leading the charge. It would be a rapid return to Premier for Officer after spending 2011/12 and 2012/13 in free-fall, following back-to-back demotions from Premier and District all the way back to Subbies. Skipper Shane White has been a crucial addition to the Bullants lower order and bowling attack charging in for 24 wickets and earning 404 runs and will be the man to watch for the Rebels. Brent Murdoch will lead his side to victory.

ey,” he said. “He could break the game open on either day - he’s done it before, having played in all those premierships.” Barfuss said Kooweerup - with their proven track record - deserved to go into the game as favourites. Unsurprisingly, Giles disagrees. “It’s a real toss of the coin, I mean, how do you tip someone?” he said. “They’ve got to go in as favourites - they’re undefeated this year.” But Giles has also played in a number of losing grand finals - as have O’Hara and Davey. “We know the adulation that comes with winning, but also the disappointment of losing,” he said. Sport doesn’t build character - it reveals it. Now we wait until Saturday to see what will be revealed at Holm Park Road.

SUB-DISTRICT TOORADIN will look for its fourth flag in six years and Pakenham will look to open its Sub-District account when the two teams collide at Holm Park Reserve Oval 2. The Seagulls have dominated this grade since the WGCA restructure at the beginning of 2009 and will be keen to continue that trend. The Seagulls will need to see off

Pakenham’s top order quickly as Josh Gonzalez (370 runs), Nic Close (324) and Greg Interlandi (288) know how to find the ropes. There are options aplenty for Tooradin up and down the order - namely Ben Spicer (364) in the batting stakes while Tim Lenders (27 wickets) has excelled with the ball. It’s the Lions to win.
