Paradise within reach Noosa is home to some of the most magnificent beachside properties in Australia, with multi-million dollar luxury pads enjoying ocean views along the coast. But Noosa also boasts a bevy of grand, indulgent homes throughout the hinterland where understated style and sophistication is the order of the day. Noosa Today Home and Garden took a look inside one of Noosa’s rural gems located in Tinbeerwah – only 20 minutes from Hastings Street and just a few moments from the heart of Cooroy.

NUMBER 60 Tinbeerwah Road boasts all the must-haves of a $2.9 million property, with five bedrooms, five bathrooms and space for six cars – but it’s the little touches of luxury and opulence that set this home apart. Set on two acres of flat, lowmaintenance grounds, this property, like many located inland, enjoys privacy and a sense of other-worldliness. Peace and tranquility is easily achieved with a simple wander through the gardens without a neighbour in sight. But it is inside where you can truly escape from the outside world and relax in complete comfort. A selection of raw materials such as wooden floors and rock walls have been combined with contemporary touches to create a cosy space that is both modern and comfortable. Soft furnishings, plush carpets and a neutral palette have kept the interior of this home light and bright, while oversized windows throughout the residence offer postcard views of Noosa and its surrounds. The master suite of this home is simply breathtaking, with a window that spans the width of the wall perfectly framing spectacular views of Noosa and beyond. Plush carpets and wooden trims echo the combination of modern and raw materials to create a welcoming and comfortable space. You will truly feel like royalty waking in this space. Every detail has been considered when designing this home, right down to

Fireplaces and plush rugs feature in the living and dining zones to help warm the family on the often cool nights of the hinterland. Yet, high ceilings and louvered windows will keep the home cool in the warmer months. Offering luxury, comfort and sophisticated style, the grand homes of the Noosa hinterland are just as impressive as the multi-million dollar homes of the coast. But the benefit of buying rural is these magnificent homes are often surrounded by tranquil land and gardens where you will feel a million miles away from the outside world.

WORKING with clay is all about the magic of making something unique for your home. The good news is there’s a swag of ceramic artists in Noosa who are willing to share the joy and get you started on creating some wonderful pieces for your own home. For those of us who have dreamed of creating a unique dining set or a special piece of decoration, the ceramic group at Noosa Arts and Craft Centre (NACC) is more than happy to share their passion for clay.

Unique is ... Peop important le c anything an create they wa nt here...

Ceramic artist and painter Beatrice Prost is one of many crafty creators at NACC who produce handmade, functional and decorative homewares from small porcelain decorative pieces to large round platters. “I take pleasure in exploring the decorations of my hand-built forms,” she said. “Each one is unique. Some forms will harness the beauty of multiple glazes. Other forms will be uniquely hand-crafted from a piece of porcelain.” Beatrice says anyone is welcome to come

Single classes and courses are available at NACC, where people are encouraged to explore their most creative side. “Unique is important,” Beatrice said. “People can create anything they want here.”

Top 10 trends in tiles From CERAMICA SENIO, Noosaville

The bathroom of this Tinbeerwah home is a luxurious example of the latest in bathroom trends. Currently on the market, this bathroom is the epitome of this year’s trends, where simplicity and elegance go hand in hand. Picture: R&W NOOSA

1. TEXTURE. Things are about to get a little rough! Tactile, lumpy and uneven edges give dimension and depth to your finishes. 2. PATTERNS. Geometric and patchwork designs that add interest and focus on any floor and wall. 3. SHAPE. Time to think out of the square!Hexagons, penny rounds, diamonds and lantern shapes give walls and floors character and texture without being overpowering. 4. LOOK AT LIKES. Tiles that mimic other finishes. Concrete look, timber look, brick look and always the classic, stone look tiles. We especially love timber look tiles, hardwearing with no maintenance with the soft timber feel, great in wet areas too! 5. NO BOUNDARIES! Use tiles as a feature bedhead, ceiling feature, kitchen benchtops, kitchen skirt tile, feature stair riser and much more. 6. MOSAICS. Timeless and used for thousands of years. Stone, glass or porcelain mosaics can add texture and interest. Give a lift to a small space like a powder room floor. 7. ENCAUSTIC tiles. Vietnamese concrete tiles traditionally made by methods passed on from one generation to the next. Beautiful surface patterns created by the infusion of ochres and clays to the surface. 8. COLOUR YOUR WORLD. Bring life into your space with tones and tints of your favourite colour. 9. LOVE YOUR GROUT! Use epoxy grout to prevent cracking, discolouring and staining. We love using epoxy grout in pools, spas and wet areas. 10. LAYOUT. Get creative! Instead of just laying your tiles straight, why not lay them brick bond. We love rectangle floor tiles laid herringbone!

A guaranteed pit stop

THE bathroom – it’s the one place in the house every guest is guaranteed to enter, or at least be able to locate during a visit. It’s a place where we prepare ourselves for the outside world, or relax after a hard day’s work. So, why not give a little love back to your bathroom this year and jazz up the one part of your home that always leaves you sparkling. To get you started here are the top five bathroom trends of 2015, according to Noosa Bathroom and Kitchen Specialists’ Lyn Woodward. Luxury hotel inspired bathrooms – people want a glamorous space where they can relax and unwind. Your new bathroom will be with you for many years, so it is worth spending a little more on quality fittings and fixtures to ensure longevity; after all, quality will always be in fashion; Larger shower areas – many people are choosing to remove the bath and create a larger shower space with a frameless shower screen or single glass panel to create an open, spacious feel; Free-standing baths – for those who have the space for it, and like to have a bath, then deep, free-standing baths are popular; His and hers showers – either two separate shower outlets or two-in-one showers are also very much in trend. With a fixed monsoon shower head and a separate hand shower, you simply flick a diverter switch between the two, so you don’t have to get your hair wet if you don’t want to. Double basin vanities – great for couples, or siblings, set in wall hung vanities with stone benchtops, with tall basin mixers or wall mixer taps for that lush, hotel feel.

kitchen just right

THE kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where the family gathers to chat, eat and spend time together. It’s where family favourites are created and is the hub for creating fancy dinner parties. So, when it comes time to renovate, it’s important to get it right. CAM and TANYA MITCHELL from Mitchell Cabinetmakers share their top tips for a timeless kitchen design. WITH the influx of home renovation shows on TV, many people think a simple makeover will do wonders to the sale price of their home. In some cases this might work, but if your kitchen has old bones, it simply won’t support a makeover. We advise all our clients not to throw their money away by cutting corners when it comes to redesigning and renovating the heart of their home. If you are going to invest in a kitchen renovation, then make sure you use quality hardware and materials. As they say, kitchens and bathrooms sell homes, so make sure you create a space that is functional, and use products that are designed to last. Here are our top tips for designing a kitchen that will last a lifetime while maintaining a quality look: Invest in Blum soft-close drawer runners and hinges. Soft-close fittings means there is no more banging and damaging of the cupboards;

Little lemon lovebites FEELING a little sour? Then why not sweeten up your day with this delicious twist on the much-loved lemon meringue. With citrus in season, now is the perfect time to tantalise your tastebuds with this simple, yet divine treat and have the sneaky indulgence you know you deserve. Ingredients Cupcake base 100g butter, softened 1 cup (200g) caster sugar 2 teaspoons finely grated lemon rind 2 eggs 1 and ½ cups (225g) self-raising flour ½ cup (125ml) milk Lemon curd 1 egg, lightly whisked 50g butter 2 teaspoons lemon rind ¼ cup (60ml) lemon juice ½ cup (100g) caster sugar Meringue 3 eggwhites ¾ cup (155g) caster sugar

Method 1. Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees C and line muffin trays with paper cases. 2. Use an electric mixer to beat the butter, sugar and lemon rind until pale and creamy. 3. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well between each addition. 4. Add the flour and milk, in alternate batches, and stir with a wooden spoon until just combined. 5. Spoon mixture evenly among the lined pans and smooth the surface. 6. Bake in pre-heated oven for 15-20 minutes or until cooked through. Remove from oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. 7. Meanwhile, to make the lemon curd, combine the egg, butter, lemon rind and juice and sugar in a small saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring, for five minutes or until mixture boils and thickens. Remove from heat. Strain through a fine sieve into a clean bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge to cool and thicken. 8. Use a small knife to cut a V-shaped piece out of the top of each cake, about 1.5cm deep, leaving a 2cmwide edge. Spoon the lemon curd evenly among cupcakes.

9. Place eggwhites in a clean, dry bowl. Use an electric mixer to whisk until firm peaks form. Gradually add the sugar, beating well between each addition. Continue beating for 2-3 minutes or until sugar completely dissolves. 10. Spoon meringue on top of each cake, using a round-bladed knife to shape in peaks over the cake and enclosing the filling. Use a small brulee gun to grill the meringue until lightly golden. (Alternatively, transfer cupcakes to an oven tray; place under a pre-heated grill until lightly golden).

WHEN the 2011 floods left Craig Hubbard and Jemma Edwards’ Doonan farm ‘Shambhala’, completely wiped out, it was the local community that came to the rescue. Overwhelmed by both the natural devastation and the support that followed, the devoted farmers have gone on to establish a business which they hope will give back to the community and strengthen the shire’s agricultural industry. While the co-op was created two years ago, it has only been in the last 12 months that the business has really started to take shape, with a total of 36 local producers currently on board. “We are trying to establish a community of local food security and resilience,” Craig said. “What we have created is a local food system – a hub where local farmers can come and utilise our facilities to sell their own produce with the aim of giving growers a stable outlet and a voice. On last count the team at Shambhala was delivering to 100 families across the Sunshine Coast with the potential to reach as many as 500. The produce is not only fruit and vegetables however, with home-baked breads, natural cleaning products, milk, oil, eggs, and even tofu all available for purchase.

Parents to Isaiah, 7 and Kaia, 5, for Craig and Jemma their business is not just about helping local farmers but encouraging customers and sellers alike to go back to basics with the food they consume for the benefit of both themselves and the wider community. “We are in danger of forgetting how to grow but there is a small band of farmers around the world trying to prevent this,” Craig says, a small pile of nutrient compost cupped in his hands. “The thin layer of soil around the planet is the only thing keeping us going.” Their farm is certainly true to the pair’s ‘real food’ values, with not a pesticide in sight. Next to each row of lettuces on the farm, there is a row of marigolds, strategically placed. “They are there to attract the bees and wasps which then repel other bugs from the lettuces,” Jemma explains. “The bugs don’t come near.” As well as their online trade, Craig and Jemma attend Noosa farmers’ markets every Sunday, Kawana on Saturdays and will be attending the Big Top markets on Saturdays and Wednesdays. For more information on how to be involved with Shambhala Farm, whether as a consumer or seller, visit http://shambhalafarm.com.au.

AUTUMN for me is all about cooler days and nights, leaves turning to stunning colours and spending a lot more time outdoors in my garden. After the warm days of summer spent at the beach, riding bikes and enjoying the beautiful sights of Noosa, I can now make plans to get my garden back into order after all the summer growth ... and the recent heavy rains! There are a few things that need attending to, so here are my suggestions for autumn gardening: Lawn care – after many warm months, with irregular rain (then heavy rain), most lawns are in need of some tender loving care. The first step is to give your lawn a few cuts without the catcher. Next step is to sprinkle an organic slow release fertiliser (I like blood and bone or organic manure pellets) all over the lawn and give it a good watering in. This will help build up the level of topsoil and give the grass roots something solid to grow in. Post-summer pruning – many of our local shrubs would have grown quite a lot over summer, so now’s a great time to give them a nice prune. Don’t overdo it though, as you want to retain a good shape to all shrubs and

small trees. Cut back any branches touching the ground and growing into gutters or buildings. Start a compost bin – with all the garden clippings you can chop them up, or call in someone with a mulcher, and create a compost pile of all green waste. This is a valuable resource for your garden and when it decomposes it can all be used as mulch around your gardens. Keep green waste, don’t get rid of it. Feed fruit trees, especially citrus – with autumn here and winter around the corner, we’ll be getting ready for all the citrus trees providing abundant crops into the next few seasons. After heavy rains and a hot summer citrus trees will be in need of a good feed. Again use a quality slow release fertiliser, rotted compost or manure, organic liquid plant fertiliser and mulch, like cane or hay. For more gardening ideas visit www.soiltosupper.com

Shed mates are

men of steel By KATIE DE VERTEUIL HOME is where the heart is and hidden away in a small site off Wallum Lane, a bunch of local gentlemen are hard at work, building a home of a different kind – one that can be shared by all males of the shire. Noosa Men’s Shed was founded by Les McKenzie, who had been involved in the Gladstone Men’s Shed before moving to Noosa. While it came to life mid last year, an appropriate site was not acquired until September, with Unitywater sponsoring the group and allowing them 10 years lodging at their site in Noosa Heads. Less than a year on, the group has been thriving with around 60 members. Since taking up residence at the site, the men have been hard at work, transforming two Unitywater vacant buildings into a beautiful space which they can call their second home. What was originally a chlorine

room is in the process of being transformed into a woodwork shed, and there a wide variety of tools currently in storage ready to get the workshop buzzing in a few months. The stairs to the mezzanine have been installed, the framing for the external walls has been erected and the roof purlins are in place. The next big step is the installation of the roofing, which the men are starting to work on. The laboratory on the site was the first work completed, having been turned into a general purpose facility room complete with computer room, kitchen and office and social area. Outside, the garden is at the very beginning stage, with vegetable beds built and filled with soil, ready to be planted.

There are also a number of fruit trees and a lovely grass area out the front which the shedders have worked on and they have nearly finished a seating and recreational area. Full of life and coloured with a dash of cheek and plenty of wit, the motley crew are hard at work every Tuesday and Thursday morning, building their new home. Despite the scorching heat of the last few weeks, smiles are contagious at the site and swiping the sweat off their brows the shedders continue, hammering, sawing, digging, drilling, painting and joking. Once it hits 10am, it’s time for ‘smoko’, a shout echoes out and the men pile into their general purpose facility where a cuppa

and biscuits are shared, along with updates of progress outside and other news. Most of the men also pop ’round on Wednesdays for a lazier day, where cards are played and ‘Des’ aka ‘Kitchen Bitch’ ensures no-one goes hungry. The men have also started up beekeeping and once the main buildings are complete, there are sure to be plenty more activities to suit members’ individual interests. While some did admit the gatherings were a nice escape from the ‘missus’, the true spark of the group is the support system it creates. “It’s really about the companionship and camaraderie,” shedder Les Arthur said.“Men don’t tend to talk about their problems. “Here you feel comfortable talking about personal issues with the guys and know people will listen and you won’t be judged.”

- Neville Glover Secretary Ian Broadfoot agreed. “It gives me a place where I can just go and know I’ll be welcomed, where I can be with other men,” he said. “It’s a fellowship really and there are a lot of activities here to keep us busy.” The shed is also the perfect way to learn new skills. “We come from all walks of life and it’s uncanny but you always find someone who is an expert in the field,“

co-cordinator of the gardening group Neville Glover said. “I was always a bit of a handyman but there are so many new skills I am able to learn by coming here.” The shed also is health aware, with a strong alliance with Beyondblue. “There is no competition and I have a good laugh – I get to put up with everyone’s terrible stories and jokes,” Neville laughed. “And those with poor health can still come and have somewhere in company

to relax, it’s not like out a cafe where someone is waiting for your seat.” Noosa Men’s Shed meets every Tuesday and Thursday 8am-12 noon and Wednesday’s 1pm-4pm. The group is in desperate need of a mower and whippersnipper and is calling on anyone in the community with one that they are no longer in need of, but that is still in good condition, to help out. Fire pits are popular in urban living spaces and offer the alluring sound of a crackling fire.

Gas fireplaces create ambience and mood in any outdoor space and are easy to use with a switch to turn on.

Can’t beat fire for

ambience

IN NOOSA, we are lucky to have mild winter days that are matched with pleasant evenings best spent outdoors around a fire with friends and family. Finding the right outdoor heating to suit your lifestyle can be a challenge, with a range of options available from gas outdoor fires to wood heaters and fire pits. To help make the decision a little easier, award-winning landscaper TROY DOUGLAS of Contemporary Landscaping shares his picks for on-trend outdoor heating this winter. TWO of my favourite outdoor heating options are fire pits and gas fireplaces. Each has its own benefits, such as the easy to use gas fire that turns on with a switch compared to building a fire for a pit. But with a gas fire you lose the beautiful sound of a crackling fire on a cool night. In urban areas, I find it’s common for fire pits to be the most popular heating option as they bring a rustic feel to any yard.

Fire pits create a relaxing environment and a focal point for the outdoor space, where friends and family can gather to roast marshmallows or enjoy a drink with mates. Cost is also another benefit of fire pits, being cost effective and easy to install with low maintenance and fuelling costs. Alternatively, gas fireplaces are a luxurious choice creating a sense of romance and a relaxing ambience, more commonly

found in high-end landscaping schemes. Gas fireplaces can be installed free-standing or built into an outdoor structure to suit your landscaping design and lifestyle. At the 2014 Lanscape Queensland Awards, we received the highly commended award in residential landscaping for a backyard designed around a gas outdoor fireplace. The owners of the property

use the fireplace weekly during the colder months and said they loved both the warmth and ambience created by the fireplace. Easy to use with a flick of a switch, there are no excuses not to venture outdoors during winter and enjoy a relaxing evening by a gas fireplace. Remember to always use a licensed contractor who is part of an association such as Landscape Queensland or the HIA.

Safety heats up NOOSA Heads Fire Rescue station officer Rob Frey said it was important to be safe when using fire or gas for heating in or out of the home. Putting towels or clothing over heaters to dry is a fire waiting to happen, as well as placing combustibles too close to the flame or heat. Remember to stow away any lighters or lighting fluids after they have been used and keep them out of reach of children. If your outdoor heating has a flue, get this serviced annually by a professional and sweep the chimney regularly. If you have an open fire as your outdoor heating, it’s best to havea guard in place to prevent embers from falling out.
