peach tree. It was a picture she had taken while waiting to go to band with the 13-year-old playing clarinet in the Southern Downs Band. But that picture in the peach tree caught the attention of the judges and so they went to Ipswich for the regional cat-walk competition. “But we’d never done that sort of thing before, so we didn’t know what to expect,” she said. “All the girls had big dresses and heels and their hair up. Erin just had a nice party dress and ballet flats and I’d kept her hair down.” And while she didn’t do any good there - the photogenic youngster caught the eye in the photography section and the rest as they say is history.

MOVE over Miranda Kerr, there’s a new girl on the block. Thirteenyear-old Killarney schoolgirl Erin Lloyd has just taken the first major step in her much longed-for modelling career. Erin, who is in Year 8 at the Killarney State School, was this week named Miss Country Girl Australia Junior Model, winning the online photography division. Proud mum Sue said the phone call this week was a brilliant surprise for the young singer/model. “She got into the top 10 across Australia, and we were just proud of that,” Sue admitted. “When the lady rang us this week to tell us, we couldn’t believe it. She said she’d ring back in the morning when it had sunk in,” she laughed. Sue said Erin was very excited about the win, particularly as part of the prize is having her name passed on to all of the top agencies. “She is on cloud nine,” she said. However, this doesn’t mean that she is about to ditch school and travel the world. “She needs to have a solid education foundation behind her too,” her down-to-earth mother said from experience. One of eight children (and the oldest of four girls), Erin is the second model in her family with one of her older brothers also doing a little modelling in the past. Sue said they entered the competition a year ago, sending in a picture of Erin dressed as an Indian in a

Study is welcome SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council Economic Development Unit (EDU) will welcome a study tour from the Mackay Rural Production Society. The council’s Manager Planning and Development Cecil Barnard said the Mackay Rural Production Society, made up of cane growers and beef producers, will visit Warwick on 23 and 24 March and Stanthorpe on 25 and 26 March. “The group have organised to visit a number of places on the Southern Downs including Harslett Farm, Killarney Heritage Centre, Ralph Affleck’s Vintage Sawmill, Wickhams Farm, and Lamb Family Angus Cattle at Queen Mary Falls. “The society members will also experience the famous pig and calf sales market in Warwick, GrainX at Allora and then on to Stanthorpe for Suttons Apple Farm and Cidery, Law Dogs Australia, Rugby Farms, Rizzato’s Apples, Bramble
patch, Tim Carnell’s Tomatoes and Capsicums, Ballandean Estate, Sweets Strawberry Runners and the QLD College of Wine Tourism. “The group believes that these study tours have helped members and other property managers improve on property management practices as well as providing opportunities to share information with each other and those they meet when visiting. “In this way the Southern Downs also benefits, gaining knowledge of innovative agricultural ideas from other regions. “We look forward to discussing the similarities and differences between our regions and learning about economic development strategies that have been successful in central Queensland,“ he said. Anyone with questions about the visit should phone 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372).
As happy as a pig... PIGS flew - well around the track at the annual Sandy Creek Pub Pig Races on Saturday. They attracted the punters at the annual fundraising event despite a bit of a damp track. The local event raises money for Careflight and the local school and has proven a successful day over the past few years.
But then pig racing seems to be the in-thing at the moment with Kevin ‘The Pig Whisperer’ Kiley expecting his pigs Noah’s Thoroughbred Racing Pigs to do 150 gigs around Australia this year. Kev said the Sandy Creek event, though, is always a favourite and has raised a lot of money for the local charities over the years.

Woman killed in car crash A WALLANGARRA woman was killed in an accident at Severnlea on Wednesday night. Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland of Stanthorpe Police said police and emergency services responded to a two-vehicle, head-on traffic crash on New England Highway, Severnlea, about 7pm Wednesday night that resulted in the death of a local woman from Wallangarra. “It will be alleged that the 21-year-old German visitor entered the New England Highway at Reid Road before heading north towards Stanthorpe,” he said. “It is believed that the driver of the offending vehicle was travelling northbound in the southbound lane at the time of the crash and is expected to be charged with dangerous driving causing death in coming days. “Police would like to pass on their sincere condolences to the family of the woman who tragically lost her life in the crash,” he said. Mayor Peter Blundell talks during the tourism meeting.
Visiting drink drivers
Devil is in the tourism detail
STANTHORPE Police intercepted two drink drivers early Sunday morning within two hours of each other, both drivers being international visitors. “Just after midnight, police intercepted a 25-year-old man driving a vehicle in Mayfair Lane, the driver later recording .073 per cent,” Sgt Ireland said. “A short time later, a second vehicle being driven in High Street was intercepted and the driver transported to Stanthorpe police station where he recorded .058 per cent.”
by Southern Downs Regional Council. Speakers on the night included mayor Peter Blundell who spoke on the background of the current report and the way forward. Council CEO David Keenan followed and provided those present with his extensive background across tourism and economic development in other locations he has worked in.
Council manager of Planning, Cecil Barnard, then got into the detail of the report, highlighting the major recommendations. There was then an opportunity to ask questions and raise concerns, with the chief concern of those there being a reduction in funding to tourism, which was subsequently denied.

By TANIA PHILLIPS NEW South Wales will go to the polls on Saturday to elect a new state government. Will Mike Baird, who took over from Barry O’Farrell last year, and his coalition remain or will there be a Queensland-like surprise and a major swing to the Luke Foley-led Labor party? However for residents of Tenterfield and surrounds it’s all about voting for the first time as part of the new geographically huge Lismore seat. The last redistribution moved the town into the seat
held by former Lismore Mayor Thomas George. The seat now stretches from Condong/Murwillumbah in the Tweed Valley across to Tenterfield. Mr George, from the National Party/Liberal Coalition, has held the seat since 1999 watching it expand to take in Murwillumbah in 2007 and now Tenterfield. He enjoys a 24 per cent margin and picked up a 7 per cent swing in 2011. Standing against him are Christian Democratic Party member Gianpiero Battista who
quit the National Party over its CSG policy. Adam Guise, who was involved with the Bentley Blockade fighting against CSG and previously worked for Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham, is the Greens candidate. The Lismore Labor candidate is Lismore City councillor and father of four Isaac Smith. Votes can be made at the Sir Henry Parkes Memorial School of Arts in Tenterfield, Lugume Hall, Liston Hall, Urbenville Public School and Woodenbong Central.

My priorities for the next four years: 1
Getting the extra funding we need to keepp fixing our rural roads. The Nationals in government have already delivered $4.8 millionn for or Tenterfield and Kyogle Shires, including funds for planning of Tenterfield Bypass and Bolivia Hill.
2
Investing $180 million to complete the upgrade ade of Lismore Hospital.
3
Keeping Essential Energy, our local poles and wires, 100 per cent in public hands.
4
Protecting our land and water by buying back Labor’s CSG licences including PEL 445 that covers part of the Tenterfield Shire.

to keep Thomas George on 28 March Authorised by A Gordon, 40 Eden St, Lismore 2480

Our ‘death traps’ for fruitpickers
Top cars go on display QUEENS Park shone bright on Saturday morning, thanks to a display by the Queensland Chrysler Club. While the crowd wasn’t huge, there were plenty of cars on display for the enthusiasts to look over and enjoy. Photographer TERRY WEST was on hand to capture all the fun and the beautiful cars.
All the way from Brisbane were Ross, Linda, Kirra and Summer McNichol checking out the cars in the park on Saturday morning.
SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council and the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services have begun a campaign for safer housing for Southern Downs fruitpickers. According to recent Brisbane-based media reports the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) issuing notices or fines for non-complying backpacker accommodation across the state, an initiative welcomed by the SDRC. Mayor Peter Blundell said a Brisbane paper report talked about “death traps” springing up in areas around Queensland including the Lockyer Valley, Bundaberg and Stanthorpe. “People on the Southern Downs probably remember last year that council successfully prosecuted a Stanthorpe land owner for housing 74 seasonal workers in a large marquee,” he said. “Council works very closely with QFES conducting inspections of properties across the Southern Downs. “The good news is that

that our region has appropriate and safe accommodation,” he said. Council Planning Compliance officer Vicki Sawyer said during random inspections last financial year a number of rental properties that were being used for backpacker-style accommodation units were found to be non-compliant. “In some cases, the accommodation was way below standard, to the point of being a health risk with overloaded septic tanks and crowded bedrooms with restricted exit pathways,” she said. “Anyone wanting to rent short-term accommodation units to backpackers or fruit pickers must have planning approval, and for some properties this might require a change in building classification. Anyone wanting more information about compliance issues with backpacker accommodation can call 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372) for more details.

there has been a marked improvement in accommodation for fruitpickers and backpackers however both council and QFES are still finding sub-standard accommodation and issuing warnings. “This is a very serious issue - it’s frightening to think of the potential loss of life if backpackers or itinerant workers are housed in illegal accommodation. “Both council and QFES are extremely concerned about safety, and we do not want a repeat of the Childers backpacker hostel fire where lives were lost in 2000.” He said the input of backpackers and seasonal workers who picked our fruit and vegetables crops helped drive the local economy and the workers deserved safe comfortable accommodation. “If the reputation of our region is tarnished because of overcrowded or unsafe accommodation for itinerant workers, this will have serious impacts for our farmers and consequently our local economy. A NEW service will allow Southern Downs residents to access development application searches, view property details and water accounts, rates balances and dog registration information - all online. Mayor Peter Blundell says people can go to council’s website (www.sdrc.qld.gov.au) and click on the “online services“ button on the front page. “This tool will allow members of the public to view details of development applications in our region, including
applications for building works, material change of use, reconfiguring a lot, operational works and environmentally relevant activities,” he said. “Accessible information will include details such as the type of application, applicant names, location and decision dates. “The online system has a number of very useful applications - registered users will be able to view their land and property details including their rates balance and recent transactions, registered animals, wa-
ter accounts and applications they have submitted. “Council is pleased to present this new tool to the community. It will save time for everyone and will be a more transparent process. “Council is steadily building a suite of resources that help the public find out council information quickly and easily,“ he said. Anyone with questions about the new online service can phone 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372).

WEANER steers have topped at $933 at the annual Harold Curry Feature Angus and All Breed sale on Thursday 19 March in Warwick. A total of 2100 cattle were yarded, after 20-40mm of rain on the morning prior to the sale and blight saw numbers reduce from the 2300 booked. Harold Curry congratulated all vendors on their efforts in producing the quality stock that were yarded and in particular the condition they were yarded in with such a trying start to the season. All vendors were happy to see the increased returns and appreciated what could only be described as solid results. The large crowd in attendance saw the market get off to a very strong start with 35 weaner steers account Lyn-
Cattle sales. dale Partnership weighing 353kgs making 264.2 cents to return $933.38. The major prize winner on the day was George and Helen Mulherin, taking out the champion pen of Angus weaner steers which weighed 328kgs and sold for 269.2 cents to return $883.75. The Mulherins also won the champion pen of Angus weaner heifers which topped at $623.96. Following another week with little to no rain over a very widespread
area, buyers attended from southern Queensland, northern and western NSW to compete with local competition, which saw the market consistent throughout the sale with Angus steers selling from 248 cents to a top of 270 cents for a pen of 51 weaner steers account Geroma Partnership which returned $646.36. The broad ribbon winner for the other breeds weaner steers was Col Cowin with a magnificent pen of Poll Hereford steers that sold for 252.2 cents, weighing 330kgs to return $832.26. The next feature sale will be an all agents affair on 7 May, a feature weaner sale, with farmers hoping that a widespread rain event occurs prior to this event, as each dry week is seeing increased pressure on prices.

SMOOTH TALKING Presented By Your Local Toastmaster Clubs Communication underpins everything we do. Public speaking is the tip of the communication iceberg. Sometimes not working on communication and speaking skills means that you may just be missing out on taking advantage of some great opportunities. Stanthorpe Toastmasters is offering a six week “fast track” Speechcraft course commencing 7th May. Participants will have the opportunity to attend all the workshops as well as regular Toastmaster fortnightly meetings during the six week period. And, what’s in it for you? By enhancing your speaking and communication skills, your personal development improves and you become a better leader within your workplace and/or business and personal environment. Some of the skills that you learn as a public speaker include - knowing your audience and knowing your message - what you want to achieve and what you want the audience to take away as your message - connecting with the audience using eye contract, vocal variety and body language - ensuring there is a balance between information and emotional connection All of these skills are the same skills you need to be an effective communicator to connect with your clients, your customers, your team, your staff, your peers and sometimes even your best friends.

Anzacs undermined THE time of the year is here when celebrations of Anzac are in full swing. This year is of particular interest because of the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing. Australians are keen to celebrate the memory of our brave heroes who gave so much to preserve our way of life. But there was another ‘war’ that few would know about. That was the war that took place on the waterfronts of Australia. Australians need to be reminded of the fact that the waterside workers unions had been infiltrated by the communists and its leaders were subservient to that ideology. Hence, when war came there was much disruption of the loading and unloading of military supplies for our troops overseas. Even ship repairs were sabotaged by the communist-led unions. When Russia entered the war on the Allies’ side of the war, wharf disruptions didn’t immediately desist. It got so bad that Aussie troops were employed to load and unload military supplies. Because of the shortage of supplies, especially in the New Guinea war theatre, due to wharfie activities, our military suffered needless casualties. Why is this part of our history being neglected by today’s political leaders? Jay Nauss, Glen Aplin.
Search for balance WITHIN days a brand-new Queensland State Government will try to balance the budget that hopefully will be more balanced than the one they replaced. Because hope is all Queenslanders have! Power we do not have, faith we do not have, however the new leader of the Opposition is someone who has shown over about a quarter of a century a re-electable quality. Mr Springborg MP has proved to this writer that standards do matter. He is to be complimented for his ministerial expertise in managing the health portfolio in the former government. This busy new leader of the Opposition took the time to write to express his view that the “changes proposed to the Mental Health Act are crucial” and together we hope the new ALP Government does just that, as soon as possible. It will be a fascinating political period, however from one disaster after another

following the election in the form of storm and tempest, the exaltation of victory by just one seat makes the winner of the treasury benches painfully aware of the enormous responsibilities the new government faces, separated by just a handful of votes! Melba Morris, Allora.
Path to hatred DVOs will not stop domestic violence, but oftentimes they result in more hatred, resulting in one murder a week in Australia. Violence seems to be increasing and needs to be tackled at the source. There is a lack of compassion and the desire of many to be family dictators. Alcohol, drugs, stress, money matters, and mental illness can also be contributing factors. DVOs can be slapped on a person (without witnesses) when there is no threat of violence to persons or property. Even grandparents have had their children suddenly and maliciously taken away and when the grans persist in seeing the children, the grans can have a DVO taken out by a son or daughter. The complaint is often one of ‘harassment’. Challenging a DVO is expensive and causes more stress. Mixed marriages, where religious practices and ethic differences are a factor, further compound the problems. Domestic violence is becoming a growth industry and not an easy situation to rectify. It would be splendid if people started to follow the golden rule: “Do unto others what you would like them to do unto you”. Jay Nauss, Glen Aplin.

ST Marks Anzac War Memorial Anglican Church in Beaury Street, Urbenville, celebrates its centenary this year. St Marks was originally dedicated on 25 April 1915, the day that the Anzacs landed at Gallipoli Bay. The small wooden church served the community of Urbenville faithfully through the years until a freak whirly-wind blew the roof off in the spring of 1963. There were already plans afoot to build a new church as the old church was going to be shifted to the rear of the land and used as a hall. The destruction of the old hall hastened these plans. To continue the association with the Anzacs, the foundation stone for the new building was laid on 25 April 1965. The new church
has continued serving Urbenville through all the changes within the community, Upper Clarence parish and the Grafton diocese. St Marks forms an integral part of Urbenville’s Anzac Day commemorations with the day starting with a church service at St Marks. As this year is very significant in Anzac Day commemorations, St Marks Church Guild decided that the church’s centenary celebrations will be held on Sunday 26 April, beginning at 11am with a special church service, followed by planting and dedication of the Lone Pine seedling and concluding with a luncheon at the Urbenville Bowls Club. The Guild is seeking photos and memorabilia pertaining to St Marks and its history, especially photos of the old wooden church. For more information, especially regarding booking for the luncheon, contact the Guild on 6634 1322 or 6634 1208.

Celtic traditions WARWICK remembered its Celtic History on Friday and Saturday with St Mary’s Celtic Fest Markets and Dinner Dance. Father Franco Filipetto said the event attracted great numbers with 150 people taking part in Friday night’s dinner dance at the hall and a good crowd turning up for the markets on the Saturday morning. He said the area had a strong Celtic tradition because it had been settled by a lot of Irish people. Up until the 1960s the town held a St Patrick's Day march and the day was a major holiday in the area. A St Mary’s Festival was held until 2007 when it ended due to a lack of manpower.

Educating older drivers
109938
A PRESENTATION aimed at older residents in the Darling Downs district has been initiated in Toowoomba. Toowoomba Police are still conducting the very successful Mature Drivers Presentation on Road Safety for the older drivers in the community. More than 50 presentations have been held, involving over 2000 participants, in the Darling Downs district. The program started in October 2013 where at that time statistics in the Darling Downs Police District showed that drivers over 70 years of age represented only eight per cent of the driving population but were involved in 11 per cent of the road fatalities. Senior Constable Alvyn Servin was responsible for the development of the informative presentation. His experience as a Senior Forensic Crash Investigator and the Superintendent of Traffic make it a realistic and thought-provoking talk. At the conclusion of the presentation attendees are given the opportunity to ask Senior Constable Servin any questions that they may be concerned about, with roundabouts always being a popular topic. The program has received recognition, becoming a finalist in the 2014 Australian Road Safety Awards. Interested organisations are invited to book in a presentation by contacting the Crime Prevention Unit on 4631 6733 or emailing VanDenHeuvel.LorelleG@police. qld.gov.au.
Stay safe, enjoy the drive WHEN holidays come around it’s good to think about the safety of you and your family. So to ensure you get to your destinations safely here are a few tips: Prepare your car - have it serviced and check that you’re prepared for emergencies with a blanket, torch and first aid kit. Prepare yourself - be rested before a long drive, plan the trip so you share the driving and take regular breaks to avoid fatigue. If you plan to have a drink - plan not to drive. If you have children in the car ensure they are in the appropriate child restraint. If you’re travelling with pets make sure they are restrained - for everybody’s safety. Tow check when towing a trailer or caravan. Brush up on good driving techniques. Driver fatigue: WHEN setting off on a long trip don’t leave too early in the morning because your body clock believes you should still be asleep. Have a 15-minute rest every two hours. On a long trip, especially in holiday season, there are Driver Reviver stops which provide a cup of tea or coffee, so make sure you take advantage of them. Tow check: IF towing a trailer or caravan inspect: Tyre condition and tyre inflation - including spare. Towbar and towing equipment is secure. All electrical connections are secure and lights work correctly. Trailer brakes work correctly. Rear view mirrors are adjusted correctly. Safe driving: MAINTAIN a safe distance between your car and the car in front It’s a good idea to always keep a minimum three seconds gap between you and the car in front. When it’s raining and/or foggy double the distance to six seconds no matter what speed you’re doing. Smooth driving: DON’T rush into things. Plan ahead when driving. Make early decisions on braking and accelerating. Change gears and brake smoothly to avoid skidding. This will provide a smoother drive for yourself and your passengers while also provid-
· · · · · · ·
ing less wear and tear on the vehicle and helping you save on fuel costs. Keep left: WHEN driving on a dual lane road always keep to the left lane. Use the right hand lane for overtaking; turning right or when roadworks are being carried out and there is no other choice. Indicate early ALWAYS indicate when changing lanes, 30 metres wherever practical, to advise other motorists of what you are doing. Expect the unexpected DRIVE with your line of sight parallel to the road not looking down onto it. By doing this you see further into the distance so you can be better prepared if there is a problem ahead. It may even mean you can avoid a crash. Overtaking ENSURE you have enough room to go past the vehicle you are overtaking and not cut them off. Pick you time carefully as overtaking can be quite dangerous and making the wrong decision may result in a serious crash.
Slow down early ALWAYS slow down coming to an intersection especially if you are towing a van. Your braking distance will be greater than when you’re not towing, so make sure you allow for this. You must stop on a stop sign/line. Driving at night DRIVING at night requires more skill and concentration than at daytime due to your restricted vision. Oncoming headlights can obscure your vision and pedestrians can be near impossible to see. Leave a bigger gap between you and the car in front to allow for your reduced vision and reaction time. Road rage STAY relaxed and try not to let other people’s driving skills or decisions worry you. If another driver makes a mistake don’t get angry just concentrate on your own driving skills, behavior and safety. If another driver is courteous towards you, then acknowledge the good deed with a wave.

NRL Preview
★★★★★★★★
Inglis takes charge By CASEY O’CONNOR THE leadership of Greg Inglis has been a delight to watch in the opening rounds of the NRL 2015. Handed the captaincy at Souths after John Sutton’s fall from favour, Inglis is definitely owning the roll. He is more involved, more animated and more passionate. While the pressure of captaincy sometimes has a negative effect on players, Inglis is taking his game to a new level. Fans in the Burrow are beside themselves and Roosters fans cock a hoop after another win but it is Newcastle who are the surprise performers thus far. While more fancied sides are yet to get on the board, the Knights are three from three. In other performances, the video refs are under scrutiny and the concussion ruling is itself suffering some headaches. The Eels and Bunnies go head to head at Pirtek and the Tigers and Canterbury are in action at ANZ to open proceedings in round four. The Eels felt all the wrath of the Warriors last weekend. The Warriors looked intent on posting a cricket score, leading 22-0 after 21 minutes. Unfortunately their intensity dropped off in the second half opening the door for the Eels. Poor handling in the first half set the tone for the Eels, however they showed plenty of ticker to almost pull off a miraculous comeback.
The Eels can ill afford any early mistakes against the Bunnies. Already under pressure from the injury bug Nathan Peats is in doubt. The Bunnies' Dylan Walker was either brave or crazy depending on your view playing with a fractured hand in Sunday’s game. The injury to his paw is likely to sideline him for several weeks. The Bunnies will not find this an easy game but there should be more celebrations in the Burrow. The Tigers played well in patches against the Bunnies. They dominated the opening stages making several unrewarded trips to the Bunnies line. Their intensity dropped off either side of half time, and despite the final score line lost no admirers. The Dogs somehow dragged the points back to the kennel after an arm wrestle at Brookvale. The enthusiasm and flair of the Tigers might be the difference in what is shaping as a great Friday night. The Knights are three from three after their best start to any NRL season. They outlasted the Titans in a nail-biter on Sunday at CBUS Stadium showing great composure to nail the win. The Panthers, their opponents this week did little wrong in round three against the Chooks. They were simply outplayed. Perhaps the Panthers will burst the Knights’ bubble in a close one. Blues’ brothers Paul Gallen and Greg Bird look set to go head to
head this weekend at Remondis stadium but Greg Bird may have another appointment with the judiciary. The Titans are zip from three but have not had much go their way. They have lost two home games by a combined total of three points. The return of Greg Bird, Dave Taylor and Beau Falloon definitely had a positive effect on the team. The Sharks are yet to open their account this season. Against an improving Melbourne Storm their dismal defence was highlighted. The game at Remondis could go either way. Perhaps the home ground advantage will swing things in the Sharks favour. St George surprised many, putting their Canberra hoodoo behind them to steal the points in the capital as the Raiders squandered an 18-0 lead. The Dragons were their own worst enemies in a first half littered with errors, second rate defence and poor choices. Eagles skipper Jamie Lyon was sidelined with a leg injury after training last week and his organisational skills and ability with the boot were missing. The Eagles should make amends this week. The Broncos cross the ditch after a convincing win over the Cowboys. It was a solid win but coach Bennett - always a hard taskmaster - is looking for more improvement. Fans are just pleased to keep the season going in the right direction.
The Warriors are a fitter, faster group this season - however they dropped intensity in the second half against the Eels. A repeat here will be inviting trouble. The Broncos may kick home another winner here. Rooster’s fans have plenty to crow about already and against the Raiders there should be more joy. Unless Ricky’s boys can conjure something special, this could be a nightmare for the Raiders. There have been plenty of nightmares for the JT, Paul Green and the Cowboys. No rainbows on the horizon this week. They travel to Melbourne to take on the Storm on Monday night. Matt Scott is facing sanction for an uncharacteristic high shot and if suspended there will be more howls from the Cowboys. Teams however make their own luck and the Cowboy’s will need plenty of it in this game. The Storm is building and should add another win here.

DRIVERS from all over Queensland coverged on the Warwick Dragway over the weekend as part of the Mopar Muscle Weekend. Drivers from as far north as Atherton took part in the event, which attracted 80 racers - despite rain that threatened the event on Saturday afternoon. All types of cars took the track for the colourful event. Photographer TERRY WEST was on-hand to capture the action.

Cricket focus ramping up The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
INTEREST in the ICC Cricket World Cup has certainly ramped up with the charge to the finals. South Africa and the Kiwis dispelled the myth that 50 over ODI was boring when they turned on a thriller on Tuesday night. There was always going to be heartbreak for someone and again South Africa fell at the penultimate hurdle and it is the Kiwis through to their first-ever World Cup final. Who they play is in the lap of the cricket gods and will be decided in Sydney on Thursday when the Aussies and Indians go head to head. The Aussies have had the wood on the Indians all summer but this one-day side has hit their straps at the right time. Having said that, the Australians are favourites for a reason and if the stars align we should have a promoter’s dream final at the MCG on Sunday. A group of Stanthorpe enthusiasts have me green with envy - a decision to purchase tickets to Sunday’s final back early last year will see them hopefully witness the Aussies take out the final. Peter Patti, Geoff Patti, Glen Brunckhorst and Brian Westerhout headed off on Wednesday. They will make their way to the MCG via the famous Mornington Cup race meeting. Fingers crossed they will be at the MCG to see the Aussies win the World Cup. (Need my tour director to please explain where my tickets are?) - Casey MARYVALE BREAK PREMIERSHIP HOODOO IT has been a while between drinks for the Maryvale cricket team but last weekend they tasted the sweet success of victory winning the Warwick cricket premiership. In hot conditions Wheatvale sent their opposition in to bat despite Paul Cantwell winning the toss. It looked to be a fair decision as the Wheatvale bowlers ripped through the Maryvale top order. Some fine hitting by Michael Bourke and Andrew Ryan steadied the ship - Bourke top scoring with an unbeaten 51. The Maryvale tail wagged and despite their shaky start they set Wheatvale a total of 161. The Wheatvale bowling attack certainly did not make life easy for the batsmen. Ryan Collier had an outstanding spell, taking two wickets for only 12 runs in five overs. Carter Billborough continued his good form with the ball, finishing with 2/20 from seven overs. Chris and Neil Cantwell each picked up two wickets. Wheatvale began their innings in positive fashion and three premierships in a row were looking likely. Openers Ryan Collins and Brendan Moore controlled the early overs. At 0/40 Maryvale supporters could have been forgiven for thinking another premiership chance might go begging. However in a bowling performance that swung the game in Maryvale’s favour, Josh Ryan claimed the top three Wheatvale scalps and went on to take two more wickets. Also proving a headache for the batsmen was Scott McLennan who took 3/7 from 3.2 overs. Ryan’s bowling performance not only turned the game, but won him the coveted Margaret Walsh Medal. For Maryvale who have made eight appearances in grand finals since they last won the premiership 15 years ago, it was a very sweet victory. MAUGAN BENN PLAYER OF THE YEAR WARWICK Hotel Colts player Maugan Benn was named the Warwick player of the year at the presentations following the grand final. Benn finished the season with the best batting average - 61.83 and scored the most runs - 371. He also took 12 wickets. That overall performance was enough for him to take out the 2015 Denis Rettke Memorial All Rounder of the Year. Two of the rising stars of Warwick cricket
Ryan Collins (Wheatvale) and Lachlan Gross (Colts) were announced as the 2015 Wanderers Tourists. The pair will join the Brisbane Wanderers annual cricket tour in August. The touring party under the guidance of Lew Cooper will head to South West Queensland this year and the youngsters will have the opportunity to hone their skills under the guidance of former Australian and Queensland players. The President’s Volunteer Award was won by stalwart Kevin Bourke. Lachlan Gross was named Rep Player of the Year and Ryan Collins Colt of the Year. Ted Callaghan took the most wickets for the season - 21 and Rod Hansen finished with the best bowling average of 10 wickets @ 3.90. The Fielding award went to Kris McLennan. RAILWAY HOTEL RASCALS IN GF WIN THE Grand Final of the Warwick Cricket Association Reserve Grade competition was an all-Allora affair at Mayhew Oval. But it was the young Railway Hotel Rascals that came up trumps over arch rivals Allora after only their second season in the competition. Rascals defended a total of only 135 to win the game. After batting first it was down to the bowlers and some great fielding to nail the win. It was a game that went right to the wire and in a nailbiting finish, Allora were 9/133 with one hand on the premiership trophy when Nick Van Der Poel hung onto a sensational catch on the square leg boundary. Joe Morris who took 3/31 and scored 24 runs was named Player of the Final. WILD WEATHER SUSPENDS PLAY WHEN Stanthorpe golfers headed onto the course on Saturday they were looking forward to a pleasant afternoon’s play in cool conditions. Unfortunately that changed dramatically. Play was suspended when heavy rain and persistent thunder and lightning threatened player safety. Only a handful of players had completed the 18 holes when play was suspended. The match committee in consultation with Saturday’s sponsor, Mark McCosker, determined that a 14-hole competition would be held. The decision brought no complaints from Lyle Bryant who was declared winner of the day with Nick Milne finishing in second place. Both players were in the group that completed 18 holes and with Nick returning a nett 64 for the round; he was also named the 2015 winner of the Nuffield Cup. The Pike Trophy was won by club captain, Matt Waterworth who already had best score for two of the three possible rounds and with the suspension of play, could not be bettered. David Burgess picked up the pin shot at 3/12. Pro-pins were won by Dylan Barraclough at 1/10, Eric McLellan at 5/14 and Bill Pyne at 9/18. The remaining balls on offer were decided by a blind draw of cards. Amidst all the storm activity, Hannah Reeves picked up the winner’s prize for the ladies' competition while Neta Thouard took out the runnersup spot and Kay Webb collected a ball in the rundown. The Stanthorpe greens were cored and sanded last Monday with assistance from many helpers. The greens could prove a bit bumpy in the next few weeks but that might play into the hands of some golfers who will now have what they think is a good reason for missing some of their putts. Club stalwart, Trevor Ludlow is out of action for a few weeks after a fall from a ladder while working at the club. Each week Trevor helps prepare the bunkers and the club is calling on other members to step in and help while he is out of action. This Saturday the medley 4BBB Stableford is sponsored by Clive Smith and Keith Cobon. It is a shotgun start at 11.30am and the timesheet is on the board at the clubhouse. CALM RESTORED WITH the club championships done and dusted for another year, members of the Warwick golf club can slip back into enjoying golf. You can hear the odd bit of laughter emanating from the
That’s out – Maryvale’s Dave Walker was the last batsman dismissed when he was caught short of his ground and run out in Saturday’s grand final against Wheatvale.

first tee. Players, folks are laughing on the first tee, calm has been restored. Red Rooster Rumble was back in service as nothing more or less than the most relaxing game on the weekly agenda. After a countback Doug Wilson’s 22 was enough to win him honours in last week’s RRR. Unlucky runner-up was Mick Banks and rundown balls went to Laurie King 21 and Ian Wallace 19 (c/b). Pins were won by Ben Pillar (5), Doug Wilson (7), and Alan Skinner (9). Irish fourball can be a little demanding on the male golfer - it requires a level of multi-tasking and that is not the strong forte of some. You need to play golf and manage four people’s scores on one card. There were only 30 male players up to the challenge, with 37 eager ladies lining up for the challenge (the most ladies in a competition for at least eight years). The team of Mick Payne, Brendon Jones, Lennie Williams and Ron Simon were not only up to the multi-tasking challenge, they returned 97 points to claim a win. The best of the mixed team was Kerry Wharton, Charlie Morrison, Kath Morrison, and Bill Morrison scoring 88 points. Rundown balls went to Jamie Saunders, Eddy Kemp, Jesse Harris, and Nathan Jones. Collecting pins were Peter Boney (5), Neil Carney (7), Simon Macdonald (9), Eddy Kemp (11), David Craggs (13), and Alan Skinner (16). On Sunday a small but enthusiastic group went round in the four ball best ball stableford. The winners with 45 points were Dion Phillips and Peter Boney. They finished three shots in advance of runners-up Jay Roberts and Tom Smith on 42 points. Pins went the way of Dion Phillips (7), Peter Boney (11) and skinners on the ladies’ approaches. A single stroke versus par has been scheduled for Saturday with a trophy sponsored by B&K Motors. Sunday is a medley Stableford event with points accumulating for the Style Shoes crystal vase; a new annual trophy that organisers are hoping will encourage greater participation in Sunday medley competitions over 18 holes.
PENANNT TEAMS SELECTED THE 2015 Warwick Golf Club pennant teams begin competition games on Sunday at Pittsworth Golf Club. Representing division three (scratch) is the team of Geoff Hinze, Nathan Jones, Nathan Dionysius, Jay Roberts, Shane McKenzie, Tim Sutton, Charlie Morrison, Adrian Murphy and Steve Gander. The division four (handicapped) team is Brendon Jones, Gary Russell Sharam, Mark Thomas, Eamon Cockram, Jason Owens and Jamie Saunders. The junior pennant team is Dylan Barraclough, Declan Murphy, Ben O’Dea, Sam McLennan, Joshua Hynes and Tom Smith and is expected to be ultra-competitive. PERFECT DAY FOR A SHOT THANKFULLY those errant organisers who may have had a tad too much Inglewood Show the week before returned on Sunday in time to arrange a 25-metre standard pistol (Mayleigh Cup) shoot. An action match with metallic silhouette gongs nicknamed “The gully shoot“ - this was held in perfect conditions for a shoot. It was a good day for Wayne Duffy who took out the 25-metre standard and the gully shoot. In the opening event he relegated Tom Donald to second spot and Scott Johns third. The minor placegetters in the gully shoot were Scott Johns (2nd) and Ross Jackson (3rd). This Sunday is a surprise shoot so members will need to come armed and prepared with a rifle, centrefire and rimfire. Who knows what will happen. The SSAA (Inglewood Branch) Inc was delighted to recently receive a $12,700 grant from SSAA Qld for redevelopment of the pistol bay cover. The materials have been ordered and within two months construction should be completed and members can look forward to a new lid.

Wallangarra showed they will be a force in the 2015 BRL competition. They are pictured showing plenty of grunt in defence in their game against the Killarney Cutters.
Tom Cameron gets a ball away to Josh McIntosh in Saturday’s Round Robin game against Tenterfield. The Gremlins won the final by a two-point margin.
GREMLINS SNATCH ROUND ROBIN WIN A CONVERTED penalty on the full-time siren was all that separated the Stanthorpe Gremlins and Tenterfield Tigers in last Saturday’s BRL Round Robin competition. The Gremlins took home the trophy with a 20-18 win. Judging by the form of the four BRL A Grade sides in the Round Robin there will be little between the teams this season. In the final of the ladies’ league tag the Tenterfield girls had the better of the Gremlins ladies who look an improved side. The Killarney Ladies League Tag side played their first official games on Saturday and almost upset their more favoured opponents, Stanthorpe. The Killarney girls have embraced League Tag with enthusiasm. Following the round robin competition the BRL representative side was announced. The team will play in the south West trials in Miles on April 11.
portunity to do a bit of coaching Liz and it paid dividends when they won the game. The only fancy shot of the day was Val Fancourt’s “hoop in one”. Elaine Brown looked to have regained some form, but is still looking for her first “hoop in one.” Hoop runners had to deal with storm activity but the gateballers had heatwave conditions on Friday. Despite the unseasonal heat numbers were good and scores were close. Scores were pretty close for all games. In first game the White team prevailed 12-11. After the Red team took out game two 11-8 it was one apiece. The Red Team got up in the final game by just one point, giving them bragging honours for the day. In the second game Joy Newman had a great “bomb" (when two opponent balls are ‘sparked’ out in the one shot). Grace Howard played consistently while Jenny Tunbridge and Heather Widderick also played some good shots. It was great to see Carol Verwey back on the green.
UP AND DOWN CONDITIONS FOR MALLET PLAYERS IT has been a week where mallet players dealt with a variety of weather conditions. Jenny Tunbridge had an amazing split and going through the hoop at the same time. Andrea Denkewitz also had a couple of peels - (both balls going through the hoop at the same time.) The combination of Jenny Tunbridge and Val Shephard won their game against Heather Widderick and Andrew Denkewitz 26-16. Margaret Dickenson and Val Richardson defeated Effey Russell and Joy Newman 26-17. In a great team effort Margaret Dickenson had a break of five after some good work from Val Richardson. A reminder to all players that from March 31 play will commence at 9am. The early weather signs were ominous last Wednesday morning for hoop runners but after a check on the weather radar a 9am start was decided on. The smaller than usual group played two very close games. Bill Golding and Liz Elway played the last game together. Bill took the op-
SPEERS LEADS THE WAY STANTHORPE golfer Mick Speer led another good field into the clubhouse at Sporters last weekend. Runner-up was another Sporters stalwart Bob Watt, who also clamed the pin shot at the third. Rundowns went to Mark Lynam and Angelo Maugeri. Ian Anderson had the best gross and the pro pin went the way of Ian Anderson. It was a good day for Speers who not only won the round but headed home with a meat tray. Also going home in the company of a meat tray was Danny McAuliffe. An early note for Sporters diary - there will be no Sporters Golf over the Easter weekend, however tee-off this Sunday is at the normal time (7.30am - 8.30am). FIRST LADY’S GOLDEN WIN AUSTRALIA’S undisputed first lady of horse racing long ago shook off the mantle of Tommy Smith’s daughter. Gai Waterhouse’s record speaks for itself. She is one of the superstars of
the turf but last Saturday it was difficult not to compare her to her famous father when her horse Vancouver overcame an outside barrier to win the Golden Slipper. It was Waterhouse’s sixth win in the famous race, equalling TJ’s record. It is one that she now looks certain to eclipse. She revealed after the race she had been motivated to succeed in this race after one of the last conversations she had with her father. Only days before his death TJ admonished her, saying: “You make me sick - you can’t train two-year-olds.’’ Waterhouse said, “Dad’s words were my driving force to improve - I wanted to make him proud.’’ She has certainly done that in spades. It was a bittersweet day for winning jockey Tommy Berry and his family. Two years ago he was celebrating his first win in the richest twoyear-old race in the world with twin brother Nathan. Last year he and his family were mourning Nathan’s sudden death. On Saturday he dedicated the win on Vancouver to his late brother as he was joined in the celebrations by his fiancee and their very new baby boy. Nicole Ritchie, international designer was the race day International Ambassador at Rosehill last Saturday. I think Gai left no-one in any doubt as to where the real racing ambassador could be found - in the mounting yard. VALLEYS WIN SECOND TIME ROUND THE Stanthorpe knock-out semi-final was decided last weekend in the most unusual of circumstances. Under uncertain skies on Saturday Valleys and Wanderers took to the C.F. White Oval to decide who plays RSL in the Grand Final. Valleys had a commanding lead in the game and were within reach of a win when lightning forced players from the field. With no break in the storm activity, the decision was made to replay the game on Sunday. A reasonable and sensible course of action in the circumstances, however the Stanthorpe presentation night was held on Saturday night. When players regrouped on Sunday for the replay, some were probably questioning whether that was a really good decision. Valleys won the toss and their captain backed his boys to shake off the cobwebs and get the job done. Wanderers were sent in to bat and openers Rob Yates and Tim Harslett were dismissed quickly. The Valleys attack ripped through the Wanderers line-up. Josh Anderson took four wickets for 23. There were good bowling performances from Damian Anderson 3/11 and Sandro Stefanon 3/21. As they were set to do on Saturday afternoon, Valleys clinched victory in the 17th over with Jordan Lanza hitting the winning runs. Valleys dominated both Saturday and Sunday’s game with some outstanding fielding and solid batting, backed up by good bowling. Valleys will now play minor premiers RSL, who dominated the local season. Despite their outstanding performance all year, RSL have had the wobbles in recent games and Valleys are not without a chance of upsetting the favourites.
