Treasure in the hills

By JESSE GRAHAM IF SEEING another side of the Yarra Valley and Dandenongs off of the beaten trail and searching for hidden treasure is how you like to spend your time, you may already know about geocaching. Geocaching is an online community with one simple ideal – to conduct a worldwide outdoor treasure hunt, where people can hide and seek prizes using elaborate and fun clues, puzzles or hiding places. Playing is simple: sign up and pay once-off for a membership, download the application onto a GPS-enabled smartphone and search. The geocaches are containers hidden in remote, strange and unexpected places and given a GPS-marker on the app, which will help geocachers – or searchers – to track down the treasures within. But it isn’t as simple as walking to a spot – geocaches are often hidden in trees or under logs, magnetised to metal surfaces or feature complex puzzles to find the correct latitude and longitude of the containers. Each cache is noted as whether it is safe for children and pets to search for, the amount of time required to find it and other directions, to make sure searchers only bite off what they can chew. Here is where the fun begins – each geocache has a number of cryptic clues and descriptions, which will mean search teams may have to solve puzzles or think outside of the box if they are to succeed. The experience also gives players the opportunity to see a different side of the world around them. Even long-time residents of the Yarra Ranges can expect to see their towns in a different light, where any nook and cranny might be hiding a hidden container.

There are about 100 geocaches h i d d e n around the Healesville area alone, and a total of 2,55,612 active geocaches worldwide, with six million people signed up as geocachers. There is an honour code to the game – each cache will generally hold small trinkets as well as a notepad and writing utensil, and those finding the caches should only take items from the container if they leave behind something of equal or greater value. They are also asked to write their name in the notepad, as well as log the experience either online or through the app. Though the only necessity to find geocaches is a GPS device or a GPSenabled mobile phone, it is recommended that participants prepare for searching by taking sunscreen, water and food, as well as dressing appropriately for the conditions – some caches may be in areas of heavy sunlight, while others may take extensive hiking or searching through bushes to find. To find out more about geocaching, or to sign up, visit www. geocaching.com.

Best of

both worlds AUTUMN combines the best of both summer and winter – an ideal time to explore the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges. This first edition of Tourist News in 2015 also marks my first as editor, and it has been a pleasure to profile such a vibrant and diverse region of Victoria. Autumn brings with it not only a change in the weather, but a whole host of markets and festivals for visitors to the area to truly get a taste for its culture. This edition, you’ll meet places and faces of the Yarra Valley that will impress and delight you. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a cup of coffee or explore the great outdoors, we bring you our picks for a great day out in the valley. You’ll meet Ros Gilbert, a longserving and passionate volunteer at the Healesville Tourist Information Centre. We’ll also introduce you to other local treasures including some of the best fresh produce in the area and, as always, we’ve done the groundwork for you in finding local events. Take a wander through yesteryear on the Healesville Historic Walk, a glimpse into the rich history of this colourful town, or read up on the best of Marysville accommodation. We’ll take you ‘behind the scenes’ of the Warramate Hills, and you’ll discover the best cellars the region has to offer. With Easter on its way, check out our suggestions for ways to enjoy a fabulous family celebration, be it a fun-filled day at the Warburton Easter Fund-raiser or a relaxing lunch at one of the many scenic picnic grounds. Kath Gannaway writes that ‘one day is just not enough to discover the amazing wealth of artistic endeavour and talent in the hills’ and I would have to agree – there is just so much to see. If you need even more reasons to visit beautiful Sassafras we’ve got five for you, and our calendar is bursting with things to see and do in the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley throughout the autumn months. This autumn, step outside your comfort zone and visit a place you’ve never been for an experience unlike any other. It’s a beautiful season, so get out there and enjoy it. FESTIVALS

Cooler times, hotter interest By KATH GANNAWAY THE lower temperatures of autumn and winter pave the way for festivals that celebrate some of the cooler aspects of living in a cool climate environment. First up is the Hills PAVE Festival from 9-19 April. This year celebrates a decade of fun and festivity and includes SunFest on Sunday, 12 April. Featuring over 200 performers and artists showcasing something for every taste, age, ability and interest, PAVE will be jam-packed every day with great activities throughout the school holidays. Enjoy workshops, music, open community garden tours, the greatly anticipated Golden Cow Literacy Awards and much more. Visit www. pave.org.au. Moving indoors, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow comes to Burrinja at Upwey on Sunday, 21 June, and to Warburton on Wednesday, 1 July. It’s a festival of laughs that stuffs one of the world’s largest comedy festivals into one show. Offering a selection of Australian, international and special guest comedians, the roadshow is all the best bits of the Comedy Festival condensed into the one ‘all killer’ no filler travelling event. Phone 1300 368 333, culturetracks.info. Another birthday festival with great appeal (sorry) is the Gladysdale Apple and Wine Festival which turns 30 this year. It’s all grown up and there are promises that it will not only be bigger, but better than ever! The festival, on Sunday, 3 May, celebrates the local apple and grape harvest with bands, performers, competitions, rides and raffles, market stalls, woodchop and blacksmith demonstrations and loads of fabulous, tasty food from Devonshire teas to gourmet cheeses. Visit www.gladysdaleps.vic.ed.au. Back inside for the 32nd Annual Warburton Film Festival. Set the dates now for this fabulous film festival and don’t plan another thing for 12-14 June. Starting with the ‘Show us your Shorts’ competition for emerging filmmakers, it continues on showing films from Australia and around the world over two wonderful days and nights. Visit www. warburtonfilmfestival.com.au

HISTORY

History more than a facade By KATH GANNAWAY HEALESVILLE began as a stopping place for prospective miners en route to the goldfields of Matlock, Jericho and Woods Point. These days the travellers are more likely to be stopping for a latte, to pick up some local wine and produce for a picnic, or just browsing the many gift, fine jewellery, clothing or otherwise interesting shops that line the main strip. Many of the town’s historic buildings remain, and their stories are told as visitors and locals alike take up the invitation to “take a walk through yesteryear ...”

Beautifully crafted information posts tell the stories behind the facades.

A circular walk with easy walking access, the 3.2-kilometre return walk starts at the Courthouse in Harker Street. Stop in at the courthouse to pick up the Healesville Historic Walk map. The walk takes in 26 of the town’s notable buildings and historic sites along Nicholson Street, through to the East End and Queens Park, returning through town to the National Trust classified Mechanics Institute. Numbered pictorial plaques tell the story of each building or special place, with photos.

EASTER Seek out a live music event to make the Easter weekend hit the right note. Pictures: KATH GANNAWAY

Can’t beat Easter By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM EASTER is a great opportunity to take some time out, and what better way to spend the day than exploring the valley. Check out what’s on around the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley this Easter. A picnic in the Yarra Valley is the ideal way to spend some quality time with family this Easter. Pack a basket or host a barbecue at one of the many parks in the area. The Acacia picnic ground in Upper Ferntree Gully is a popular option among families, or take a stroll on the banks of the Yarra River in Warburton and enjoy lunch at one of the many riverside parks in the town. The Black Keys will play a show at Rochford Winery on Easter Sunday. Home of the hugely successful ‘Day on the Green’ series, this show is part of ‘Rolling Green’ - a new roster which will see winery venues host major artists. The show will form part of The Black Keys’ Australian tour and the band will be supported by Spiderbait, Band of Skulls and Bad/Dreems. Rochford Wines is located at corner Maroondah Highway and Hill Road, Coldstream. The Yarra Glen Craft Market is held at Yarra Glen Racecourse and will go ahead on Easter Sunday. Browse treasures such as fresh produce, gourmet food, wine, arts, crafts and homewares among many more, all while enjoying a day of live music and entertainment. A family favourite, you’ll enjoy a memorable shopping and dining experience at the Yarra Glen Craft Market this Easter. Warburton’s annual Easter fund-raiser will again delight locals and visitors this year, with all proceeds going back to the Warburton community. The day features free live music, a sausage sizzle, raffles and prizes. Many local restaurants and cafes will open their doors on Easter Sunday, taking the stress out of planning Easter celebrations. SkyHigh in Mount Dandenong and The Cuckoo in Olinda will both be open, as well as most local pubs and breweries. Check with the venue to avoid disappointment and secure a booking. If you celebrate Easter with chocolate, a visit to Yarra Valley Chocolaterie will satisfy cravings. Whether you choose to spend Easter exploring the valley, dining out or relaxing at home, have a safe and enjoyable Easter. 10 Autumn 2015

The local

treasures By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM What’s Healesville’s best hidden treasure? I can’t go past the wineries. With so many, there’s something to suit everyone and a visit to a local winery is a great way to experience the beautiful scenery of the area. What’s your ideal day out in the Yarra Ranges? I’d spend the day hopping from winery to winery, enjoying the many tastes and beautiful scenery of the area. I also enjoy going to B&Bs in the area - there are so many beautiful spots to enjoy. What are the top five must-see attractions? There’s more than five! I think it depends on what individual tourists are interested in but the sanctuary is very popular. We also recommend a number of local wineries and restaurants, the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie, fruit-picking, the historic railway and bushwalking. What is the best place for a coffee and a quick bite? I’d say Innocent Bystander. You can get

Ros Gilbert is a volunteer at the Healesville Tourist Information Centre.

a coffee and a quick bite or you can do wine and cheese tasting. There’s also a beautiful backdrop, making it a beautiful place to stop and get something to eat. Where’s the best location for a romantic dining experience? I love Coombe – The Melba Estate. It’s on a really beautiful property and the food is amazing. There’s also a rich history in that Dame Nellie Melba used to live at Coombe Cottage. It always makes for a great day or night out. What do you love about living in Healesville? There’s so many things. I love the feel of this place and I think it’s the people that really contribute to that. Everyone’s so friendly and you’re always running into people you know. I find that the people of Healesville are very welcoming to tourists as well, and always eager to help. How would you describe Healesville? A lovely town with a real focus on community. Scenically, it’s a beautiful spot with lots of vineyards to visit and of course the incredible wildlife all around. It’s a great spot to live or visit.

Behind the scenes visit

From wildflowers to tall gums, the flora at Warramate is a key attraction.

By KATH GANNAWAY THE view that most people get of the Warramate Hills is as they travel between Woori Yallock and Healesville (or vice-versa) along the Healesville Kooweerup Road. But, there’s much more to this little-known bushland for those who take up the opportunity for a ‘behind the scenes’ visit. The Warramate Hills rise up from the flats of the Yarra River as it snakes its way from its beginnings high up in the mountains above Warburton, to Yarra Glen and beyond. The range is hardly mountainous, it’s more a series of hills that, at a pinch, could be described as a “minimountain range”. Somehow, some 460 hectares survived privatisation attempts in the latter part of the last century to remain as a haven for native plants and animals - and walkers, photographers and bike riders. In 1992 it was named ‘The Warramate Flora and Fauna Reserve”. There are two ‘mini-mountains’ Briarty Hill at 420 metres above sea level, and Steele Hill at 395 metres. The attraction for many are the magnificent views from Steele Hill Lookout, and Briarty Hill, but there’s a

price to pay. Even walking groups rate the hill climbs as ‘challenging’ and ‘not a walk in the park’. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a walk in the park. The walks through the lower level bushland are not flat, but they aren’t too steep either, and ideal for an amble, a chance to enjoy the tranquility of the bush and, quite likely, the thrill of a wildlife encounter. (Does a deer leaping out of the bush and dashing across your path count as such an encounter? If it’s just on Christmas, and you have kids in tow ... it certainly does). Ideally, however, autumn and spring are the most comfortable times to visit. To get to Warramate, turn into Killara Road off the Warburton Highway at Seville East, and turn into Yarraloch Way. The Warramate Flora and Fauna Reserve is managed by Parks Victoria.

GARDENS

Colour me

THE heat’s off and it’s time to get out into the countryside again to explore gardens.

Autumn

Autumn in the Yarra Valley, Dandenong Ranges and the Mystic Mountains of Marysville is a spectacular time of year to be garden-hopping. It’s all about glorious colour and design that highlights the very best of exotic trees and shrubs within landscapes that are intrinsically Australian. Among the gardens on offer are several that are open as part of Open Gardens Australia*, private commercial gardens such as Alowyn and The Singing Gardens of C.J. Dennis, and the magnificent public gardens of the Dandenong Ranges. If you’re planning a trip to the Hills, and you love to talk the garden talk, as well as walk the garden walk, try to include the weekend of 26 and 27 April when the Ferny Creek Horticultural Society holds its Autumn Show. It’s a celebration not only of the beautiful autumn foliage, but of the gardening volunteers who love their gardens with a passion.

OUTDOORS

One for the thrill-seekers By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM THRILL-SEEKERS rejoice! The Yarra Valley is bursting with activities that will get your heart racing and camera clicking. Take a look at some of the best outdoor activities in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges. If views of the Yarra Valley take your breath away, don’t miss the chance to experience the valley from a hot air balloon. Offering unrivalled views of stunning vineyards, mountain ranges and rolling green fields, balloon rides take place every day of the year, weather permitting. Riders are in for an early morning, required to meet before sunrise and then watch the sun come up over one of the most beautiful regions in Australia. If you’re not an earlybird, cycling is another great way to see the best of the valley. The Warburton Rail Trail runs from Lilydale Station through to the main street of Warburton and offers riders scenic views of the valley. Stop along the way at one of the many cafes in the area and experience the history of the region by following a former significant rail line. Visit railtrails.org.au for more information on the route. Budding golfers or seasoned experts can sharpen their skills on one of the many golf courses in the region with well-established courses at Marysville and Warburton to resort courses at Yering and Wonga Park. Take your clubs if you’re heading up into the Dandenongs and stop at some of the small public courses to practice your swing. For the adrenaline junkies among us, skydiving the Yarra Valley will make for a trip to the valley you’ll never forget. Freefall for 60 seconds from 14,000 feet during a tandem skydive. If you can keep your eyes open, you’ll experience unique views of the Yarra Valley right through to Melbourne and the bay. Horse riding and Segway, gliding, caving, and rock-climbing, scaling the heights to walk through the treetops are calling to the adventurous, and even the trepidatious, to head into the great outdoors and live life on the edge a little. Finally, all ages and fitness levels will enjoy a walk through the Dandenong Ranges. The national park offers hikers many walking tracks and picnic grounds dotted throughout. The Living Bush nature walk will introduce you to spectacular native bushland, including fern gullies and eucalypt trees. A three-kilometre, medium grade track, hikers should allow about 1.5 hours to comfortably complete the walk. For more information on walks in the region, visit www.parkweb.vic.gov.au. Outdoor activities are the perfect way to experience the beauty of the valley and there are many options to explore. Don’t forget to plan a day outdoors for the perfect way to experience the Yarra Valley.

ACCOMMODATION

Some perfect

pillow-stops Character-filled cottages for a memorable getaway.

Get the Vibe!

Luxury accommodation.

By KATH GANNAWAY SO ... what’s ’the vibe’ around town on accommodation? In Marysville the big news when it comes to putting your suitcases down and your feet up, has to be the new Vibe Hotel Marysville. The luxury Vibe opened in February, adding another fabulous option to the more than 1000 accommodation beds in the area. It’s debatable which comes first when it comes to planning a getaway or longer holiday. Is it the destination, or is it the perfect accommodation? Whether it’s the ‘Mystic Mountains’ around Marysville, the magnificent forests and quaint villages of the Dandenong Ranges, or the verdant rolling hills, tall timber mountains and historic towns of the Yarra Valley, there is a perfect pillow-stop for every visitor. You could find yourself in a cottage in the forest, a loft in a mill, or a cabin in a rainforest. You could book into a chalet, villa or resort. You could pitch a tent on a patch of grass by a river, wake up to a passing alpaca ... or a mob of kangaroos, or share a bunk-house with 50 of your favourite family and friends! Could you be waited on hand and foot in a luxury hotel? Or, spend a whole weekend without seeing another soul as you hide away with a good book, and an even better bottle of wine in a cosy cabin in the woods? Of course you could! It’s all about the great escape, and making it happen. Romantic, adventurous, relaxing or rejuvenating ... it’s up to you! Google “accommodation”. Add in a place name ... and discover your next postcard address!

BY JODIE SYMONDS THERE'S nothing quite like taking that first sip of a hot cup of coffee. Whether you need your caffeine fix in the morning to kickstart your day or as a 3pm pick-up, the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley cafes can satisfy your caffeine cravings. Where we drink our coffee has changed over time, and now each town offers a diverse range of places to enjoy. The Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley both feature unique cafes to sit down for a delicious cup like The Gilded Lily in Healesville or the Miss Marple's Tearoom in Sassafras. Be waited on or grab it in a take away cup to have on the go.There is always a coffee to suit everyone’s needs. You could make your brew at home but there’s nothing quite like catching up with friends or family while sipping a cup of coffee at your local hub. Through each town you may find small cafes hidden in alleyways that are bursting with local creativity and artwork. The main streets of most towns are lined with tables and chairs that are hustling and bustling with coffee-loving customers talking about their day-to-day lives. Pick a cafe, sit down and relax as you drink your hot cappuccino, but that won’t ease those sugar cravings. Thankfully, you can order a decadent, rich mud cake or a creamy vanilla slice to accompany your coffee. So, enjoy your next coffee in perfect ambience at your local cafe. For more information on where to get the best hot beverage from your area, visit your local information centre for their recommendations.

Sweet and savoury sauces ... delicious.

mc

BY JODIE SYMONDS WHAT better way to enjoy your freshly made scone than with a generous serving of fresh homemade strawberry jam? The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges are home to some of the most delicious jams, chutneys, wines and other preserves. Using local produce, providores, cafes and restaurants can turn produce fresh from the fields, orchards and vineyards into something amazing and delicious. Whether you’re after some tangy tomato chutney to accompany your freshly cut and cooked chips, to a sweet marmalade to smother over your toast in the morning, the variety is endless. Each product is made with love and aims to get the most out of the beautiful produce from the area, therefore intensifying the flavour for the perfect accompaniment to your dish. Wineries take great pride in producing wines from local fruit that reflect the unique aspects of place and climate in which they grow. Cheeses made from milk from cows, and goats, that munch on clean, green pastures is a growing industry producing awardwinning product, popular in restaurants throughout the region and further afield. The variety, creativity and resourcefulness of the makers is worth celebrating. They fearlessly combine fruits and flavours to come up with jams, sauces, jellies and relishes that are exciting to taste. Beetroot and orange, lime and date, fig and earl grey, red wine and chilli, walnut and cherry, rhubarb and raspberry, pear and ginger ... are just a few. Seek out your local farm-gate sales, market, delicatessen or cafe to purchase some of the best preserves from around the region to plate up something extra special at home, or package into a gourmet picnic.

History and fine wine

Giverny Estate

COOMBE Yarra Valley is one of the largest and oldest family estates in the Yarra Valley. Once the home of famous opera singer Dame Nellie Melba, the farm, vineyard and stunning new hospitality facility at Coombe Cottage are still owned and operated by her descendants. The highly awarded, estate-grown wines are made by winemaker and general manager, Nicole Esdaile. They are available for tasting among the vines on the farm on St Huberts Road, or in the stylishly restored stable block facility at the new Melba Estate at the junction of the Maroondah and Melba highways in Coldstream. Coombe Farm is a James Halliday five-star winery and this year was listed as one of his ’Dark Horse’ wineries to watch. Also, it won the ‘Best Sparkling Wine’ trophy at the annual Yarra Valley Wine Show. Wines are handcrafted in small volumes, and while served in many fine capital city restaurants, the full range is only available in the estate

restaurant, cellar doors and online via the coombeyarravalley.com.au website. The estate vineyards supply wine grapes to many of Australia’s finest wine producers and award-winning wines. Nicole and Xavier Mende (vineyard manager) select from a range of clones and sites within the vineyard to produce a diverse range of wines from the region’s varietal specialties – chardonnay, pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon – and an assortment of other less common drops. The flagship wines are the sparkling Nellie Melba Blanc de Blancs, Coombe Farm Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Melba Estate Cellar Door is open for tasting seven days a week from 10am to 5pm. Large groups and buses are welcome but prior notification is advisable. The space is fresh, stylish and spacious and the staff welcoming and informative.

MARKETS

Marketing a tradition By KATH GANNAWAY THERE’S nothing new about markets. They have been around for as long as people have needed to eat, drink and dress. Places such as Victoria Market in the city, and Hobart’s Salamanca Market are iconic city markets ... and for good reason – fantastic local produce, amazing hand-crafts, trash that simply through the imagination of a new owner is restored to ‘treasure’ status. But it’s in the country towns that markets have found their renaissance in the past 20 or so years, and it’s fair to say that there’s a market or two, or three ... or four, every weekend throughout this region. There are the monthly community markets, school markets, fifth-Sunday markets, harvest markets and organic markets and autumn is an ideal time to check them out; not too hot, not too wet (with any luck). There’s that burst of energy that comes as the seasons settle and the days shorten ... and, perhaps, there’s even a few more ‘disposable’ coins in the purse as the expense of Christmas ebbs. Whether you’re looking for the ingredients for a sumptuous dinner, or a gift for a friend, a plant to fill that space left vacant after summer, or a handknitted pair of socks in preparation

Freshen up at Mont De Lancey's harvest market.

for winter, you are very likely to find what you want at a local market. Art and apples; books and beanies; clothing, cakes and cackleberries ... enough with the alphabet! Did I mention jewellery and jams? Rocking horses and rockyroad? Tools and toys? Markets can also be reason (if any were needed) to visit a new place, meet different people and enjoy the opportunity to browse or buy in a beautiful location. OPEN STUDIOS

A day just isn’t

enough By KATH GANNAWAY Above: It’s open house at Elaine Pullam’s studio ... and lots of others. Left: Brent Dakis – jeweller.

ONE day is just not enough to discover the amazing wealth of artistic endeavour and talent in the hills. That’s why, for the past 12 years, the Dandenong Ranges Open Studios has dedicated a whole weekend to the pursuit. More than 36 local hills artists and art collectives are involved, working across a diverse range of mediums including ceramics, textiles, painting, illustration, performance, woodwork and street art. If you think you’ve been there ... seen it all before, be assured, the Dandenong Ranges’ artists are an ever-changing, eclectic lot, so there is always something new and exciting to discover as you meet the makers hidden in the hills. Two new categories have been added to the program this year. Emerging Artists highlights the work of artists who are within the first five years of their practice ... so some fresh and exciting offerings there! Then there is a sprinkling of ‘oddballs’; those who push the boundaries of what you would usually expect from one of the most anticipated events for the region’s cultural calendar. The heart of Open Studios is the opportunity to meet the makers in their natural environment. Almost 5000 art-minded visitors and tourists from all over Victoria come to the Hills each autumn to meet the artists in their working studios. “It is in these curious and inspirational environments that the artists’ creative practice truly comes to life,” said event co-ordinator Amy Middleton. “It’s a unique opportunity to have a peek inside artists’ creative practices and visit hidden studios nestled among the stunning forest of the Dandenong Ranges.”

Juet Sculpture are part of the collective studios project.

In addition, all artists will be exhibiting new work in an accompanying exhibition at Burrinja in Upwey from 28 March to 3 May. An easy-to-use Open Studios guidebook with touring map is available at Burrinja (so, a great place to start your excursion) and at other popular tourist and arts locations throughout the Hills. If you could pick just one weekend to discover and celebrate the region’s rich and vibrant artistic heritage, it has to be 18 and 19 April. For further information visit: www. openstudios.org.au.
