A CRANBOURNE East man who went on an alleged stealing-anddeception spree has been bailed, pending a delayed mental-health assessment. Bradley Neil Cornelius allegedly stole credit cards, a purse, a pouch, a nappy bag and cash from two unlocked cars in mid-March, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on Monday. He allegedly used the stolen credit cards within 24 hours to buy mobile phones and SIM cards from a petrol station, and a Bluetooth sound bar, headphones and a sports singlet from a Target store in Frankston. The court was told he failed in his attempts to buy an X-Box, an X-Box game and home entertainment system with a total value of $726 from Frankston K-Mart. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Liz Millear told the court Cornelius had also been charged over the theft of shower gel from a Cranbourne Centro supermarket in February, and with stealing a $2000 set of golf clubs from an unlocked car in Cranbourne in November. Cornelius – using his own identification – allegedly sold the golf clubs for $50 to Cash Converters’ Cranbourne store, which off-loaded them to their Frankston outlet. The clubs were later retrieved by their rightful owner. The court was told Cornelius was on a 12-month community corrections order for a series of burglary, theft and deception offences.

Cornelius’ lawyer said her client was “one of those clients that continually falls through the cracks”. The accused was compliant with his treatment regime for schizophrenia – though his treatment was being cut, his lawyer said. He had been “sleeping in a tent in a park” during an extended period of transient accommodation. The lawyer said a hospital was unable to provide a timely mental-health report for Cornelius’ legal defence due to the involved “cost”. Magistrate Barry Schultz remarked the overlap of the mentalhealth system presented “one of the difficult areas of the criminal justice system”. He deferred sentencing in the hope of receiving the mentalhealth report next week, bailing Cornelius due to his young age, available treatment and family support. “It’s relatively low level offending ... he’s becoming a serial pest in terms of his dishonesty offences,” Mr Schultz said. “I’m not adverse to putting him on a community corrections order.” Cornelius’ bail conditions include reporting to police, a night curfew and living with his mother – who was willing to house him on a short-term basis. He next appears in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 9 April. See page seven for a further story on Operation Stance as police plead with the public to keep their cars and valuables secured.

Stage one now complete By BRIDGET SCOTT CRANBOURNE Park finally unveiled the first stage of its new development last week, much to the delight of local shoppers and business owners. The 112 million dollar redevelopment was a sight to see for shopaholics last Thursday, and included brand new fashion and dining precincts. Cranbourne Park is now the only centre in Australia to offer the combination of a new generation Coles, new format Target and a refreshed and expanded Kmart, all under one roof. The fashion precinct boasts more than 30 new leading brands, including a Cotton On Mega, Uniquely Lorna Jane, Bardot, Dotti, Forever New, Jeanswest, Napolean Perdis and Novo. The opening of the redevelopments will be followed by a two-week launch party, with something happening all around the clock. The second stage of

the redevelopment is due to open in September. Centre Manager Danielle Gunner said the launch party is a reward for local and loyal customers. “Our two week launch party will delight and reward customers of all ages with celebrity and family-friendly entertainers, $50,000 up for grabs and $20,000 worth of instant prizes, craft activities, gift bags, giveaways, cooking demonstrations and live music,” she said. Olympic swimmer Giaan Rooney, as well as fashion stylist Donny Galella were there for the official first day last week. Giaan launched her new active wear range, ‘Giaan’ by Spalding, at Target and was excited to finally see it on the racks. She said she wanted to create a range of clothing that could be used for more than just working out. “Women are multi-taskers,” she said.

“I want to encourage women to exercise, and to feel confident when they do.” Giaan said women will often head from their work out to other places, such as the supermarket or out for coffee. “We needed it to be functional,” she said. The gear is a mix of both high and low performance pieces, including pants, crop tops, singlets and yoga pants. Giaan said it was between seven and 10 months in the making, with her second range set to launch in September this year. Cranbourne Park first opened in 1979 with the 13 month redevelopment generating more than 700 jobs during construction, and an additional 400 ongoing jobs at the centre. The huge launch party will culminate with a performance from Nathaniel live at the centre on Saturday 11 April from 2pm.

Victim backs ex-partner By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A FAMILY-violence victim has sided with her estranged husband, claiming in court that police used excessive force during his arrest. Toufiq Jabr Karam was sporting marks to his face and a bump to his right temple as he failed to ‘show cause’ for bail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday. He was facing multiple charges including failing to appear on bail and breaching a family-violence intervention order. Police informant Senior Constable Jo Malek told the court that four police forcibly restrained the accused during a struggle after he swung an elbow backwards at an officer on 29 March. That night, Karam’s partner twice called triple zero stating the “belligerent and verbally abusive” accused refused to leave her Lynbrook house, Sen Const Malek told the court. Karam had been barred from vis-

iting the address under an intervention order since October. On that night there was a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear at court over charges including allegedly assaulting his brother and stealing a small amount of cannabis, Sen Const Malek said. The informant said Karam received a “minor torch injury” to the side of his head from one of the officers during the arrest. He was given first aid at the scene and was bandaged by a paramedic. Karam alleged in court that he was struck with a torch and punched multiple times “until a gash was spilling out with blood. “They were just beating me to a pulp.” Karam said he believed his cheekbone was fractured and shoulder dislocated during the arrest. His partner, while giving evidence in court on behalf of the accused’s bail application, said she’d believed Karam was allowed to

come over and look after the children. “There were no drugs, no weapons. He was nagging at me. He was sitting on my couch refusing to leave. He wasn’t hurting me.” Karam had suffered drug issues in the past but had been “the best father he has been in his life” since visiting the home for the past five weeks, she said. She didn’t see the arrest blowfor-blow having been directed to stay outside with some of her children. She believed Karam wasn’t treated fairly and her children saw “their daddy get attacked”. Sen Const Malek said she was concerned for the couple’s four children - also protected under the intervention order - due to Kalam’s drug issues and his partner’s support for him on the night and in court the next day. Karam told the court he had failed to appear at court on 25

March because he arrived on the wrong date and that his partner had told him the intervention order had expired. “She rang up and said I could spend some time with the kids,” he told the court. Magistrate Barry Schultz said the alleged violence could be looked at in “two ways” and was a matter for a contested hearing not a bail application. “What I have to determine is the simple matter of granting you bail, including protecting children from witnessing violence.” He said Karam’s lack of compliance with community corrections orders - including completing 30 out of 270 hours of unpaid work “doesn’t paint a pretty picture”. “In real terms you’re facing a term of imprisonment on a number of matters.” Karam was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court today (Thursday).

Second kinder torched By LACHLAN MOORHEAD SUSPICIONS have been raised after a second Casey kindergarten was set on fire in three weeks. Police are investigating the incident in which the rear of Valley Brook Pre School in Hampton Park was torched about 11pm on Sunday 29 March. The fire took CFA crews more than an hour to get under control. It is believed the fire started in a small garden shed where

paper was stored behind the Brook Court facility, before spreading to the pre-school building. It’s understood to have caused minor heat damage to the pre-school’s eaves and part of its outside panelling but the facility is expected to operate as normal after the school holidays. The latest incident comes after the disused Mossgiel Park Pre School in Endeavour Hills was gutted by fire about 1.30pm on Sunday 8 March. That blaze took 20 minutes

to get under control. It is believed the damage bill for that incident will be at least $400,000. The Mossgiel Park Pre School premises is owned by the council but was not being used. Last year it acted as a polling booth for the state election. No one is believed to be injured in either blaze. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.

I am constantly inspired by Relay For Life participants and volunteers, and their dedication to the cause. The money raised at Casey Relay For Life will help Cancer Council Victoria provide programs including: Funding some of Victoria’s brightest researchers and their cutting-edge projects each year to help detect, treat and beat cancer. Important prevention programs like PapScreen Victoria, Quit and SunSmart to make sure people have all the information they need to cut their risk of cancer. ‘Bunjil’ the creator By BRIDGET SCOTT THE new multi-million dollar facility for the City of Casey had its official sod turn and naming on Monday, with around 100 guests present to witness the occasion. The ground of the Casey Cultural Precinct, now known as ‘Bunjil’, was officially broken by City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland as his fellow councillors as others watched on. Dean Stewart officially welcomed everyone to the traditional land of the Indigenous tribes, and explained the meaning behind the new name of the centre. Bunjil, (or Eaglehawk) in Australian Aboriginal mythology is a great creator, cultural hero and ancestral being. Following this Cr Morland spoke about the importance of the 17.4 million dollar project which is scheduled to open in 2017. “This is the largest ever infrastructure planned for the City of Casey,” he said. “It’s also a first for local government.” Councillor Morland was also the Mayor when Casey Arc was officially opened 14 years ago. This new project has now taken its place in terms of the largest scale building to be designed in the City of Casey. “It will be a centre piece for residents,” Cr Morland said.

At the turning of the first sod, from left, Federal Member for La Trobe Jason Wood, Nino Occhietti, Councillor Geoff Ablett, Robin Dzedins, Councillors Rosalie Crestani, Susan Serey, Mick Morland (mayor), Rafal Kaplon, Amanda Stapledon, Sam Aziz, Wayne Smith and Louise Berkelmans and June Talbert. 136508 The precinct will feature an 800-seat regional theatre, multi-purpose exhibition space, regional art gallery, community library, civic centre and council offices, community plaza and a regional schools centre for the arts. Three City of Casey residents were called to the stage to help unveil the name, a title chosen based on their three submissions for the naming competition.

Robin Dzedins, Nino Occhietti and June Talbert each incorporated Bunjil in to their submission, and said they found that this was fitting and reflective of the building’s design. Councillor Morland said this would be an ideal meeting place for both residents and tourists. “It will be somewhere where everyone feels welcome,” he said.

Operation Stance set for car crime cut By BRIDGET SCOTT A NEW operation run by police has prompted a huge drop in the rates of auto crime. Operation Stance, which began on 22 February, has already contributed to 49 per cent reduction in theft of car and a 52 per cent reduction in theft from cars. Run by the Criminal Investigation Unit (CIU) at Narre Warren, the operation identifies hot spots in the municipality where there are high rates of certain crimes.

Casey detectives have run a number of plain clothes operations and the Operation Response Units support these by deploying marked units to crime hotspots. The operation will continue until the end of June, with at least 50 additional high visibility police officers taking part. Detective Senior Sergeant John Bergin said police have made a number of arrests. “We have checked around 200 plus people and intercepted around

100 cars,” he said. “There has already been a big reduction in theft from cars.” Sen Sgt Bergin said police at Frankston ran a similar initiative which was also very successful. He said police also wanted to make people aware of how much inconvenience car theft causes its victims. As well as losing valuables, including treasured photos, he said crime victims had to deal with making insurance claims.

Cranbourne Senior Sergeant Daniel Baynes also said the operation was a great success. “It has already had a very good impact,” he said. He said the community must support Operation Stance by partnering with police in the fight to curb these crimes. Statistics from Victoria Police revealed that between 2013 and 2014 there were 48,000 reports of theft from car in Victoria, with no signs of forced entry in 41,000 of these cases.

Loaded gun discovered A TRAFFIC controller stumbled across a loaded sawn-off shotgun in Cranbourne last week. The road worker was directing traffic at the intersection of Station and Gordon Streets around 10.45am on Tuesday 24 March when she spotted something in the bushes along the nearby disused railway line. Upon investigation the traffic controller discovered it was a sawn-off shotgun and called police. Detectives confirmed the gun was loaded. Police are urging anyone who finds a gun not to handle it, and to contact police immediately. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au.

More Men’s Sheds on horizon THE Berwick Woodworkers Club is one of many activity groups in Casey that could share in $750,000 of State Government funding made available to build new Men’s Sheds across Victoria. Narre Warre Warren MP Luke Donnellan on Tuesday confirmed that grants of up to $60,000 are now available for men’s groups to build new facilities. The funds may be used to construct a new Men’s Shed, redevelop an existing building into one, or co-locate a Men’s Shed in a multi-function community facility. Applications for the grants close on 19 June 2015, and for more information visit www.dhs.vic.gov.au/for-business-andcommunity/community-involvement/menin-the-community/mens-sheds.

Aussie-input trains By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE State Government’s revamped plan to improve the Dandenong rail corridor has been announced – more new trains, fewer level crossings but no high-capacity signalling nor Cranbourne line duplication. The government will buy 37 trains – each train would carry 20 per cent more passengers, be at least 50 per cent Australian-made and on the tracks from 2018, the government pledged. The nine promised grade separations are crossings between Dandenong and Caulfield. A new train depot and maintenance facility will be built in Pakenham. The government claims the project will boost capacity by up to 42 per cent on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines – more than 11,000 extra passengers on the morning peak. About $30 million will be paid to scrap a public-private project negotiated by the Coalition for the rail corridor’s upgrade last year. The pay-out includes buying the intellectual property of the private consortium. The government stated its plan would remove five more level crossings and deliver 12 extra new trains than the Coalition’s project. The new project’s cost has been undisclosed but is more than the $2.5 billion slated for Coalition’s public-private project. The government claimed that the Coalition had, prior to last year’s election, secretly scrapped plans for high-capacity signalling on the line. The government will trial highcapacity signalling on the Sandringham line rather than install it on the Dandenong rail corridor.

The State Government has announced major plans for the Cranbourne-Pakenham line. 137096 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Cranbourne MP Jude Perera labelled the project as a “once-ina-generation investment in better roads and better transport for Dandenong”. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the project would mean fewer delays and more services on Melbourne’s busiest rail line. “Removing level crossings will create Victorian jobs. Building trains locally will protect Victorian jobs. “This helps our transport system and our economy.” Opposition leader Matthew Guy said the original project would have been completed in 2018 - with the financial contract closed in May this year. “Daniel Andrews can’t say what it will cost, doesn’t know how it will

be funded and isn’t sure when the project will start or finish. “If the Coalition plan is so flawed, why is Daniel Andrews spending $30 million of taxpayer’s money on buying the blueprint?” The Coalition denied the government’s claim that under last year’s plan there would not have been signalling upgrades, there would be fewer grade separations and trains. Greens south-east metropolitan MP Nina Springle said the government’s commitment to fixing the “dangerously overcrowded” lines was welcomed but was disappointed by the lack of high-speed signalling. “Modern digital train signals allow more trains to be run closer together, which is the only way to grow capacity,“ Ms Springle said. Public Transport Users’ Associa-

tion spokesman Daniel Bowen said the upgrades would provide “a lot more capacity - bigger trains and more of them.” “We hope that the upgrades included in the Dandenong line will provide enough of a boost to capacity until high-capacity signalling can be rolled out.” He said there was “one omission” - the Cranbourne line would continue to be a bottleneck without plans for duplication. VECCI chief executive Mark Stone welcomed the expected job creation and boost to the rail network’s capacity and efficiency. Expressions of interest for the level crossing removals and the next generation trains will be released to the market within months, the government announced.

AS THE issue of rubbish dumping continues to plague the City of Casey, the council has revealed how much it spends on rubbish removal. Following the removal of more dumped goods from Thompsons Road in Cranbourne last week, the council has said it spends about $80,000 per year on collecting and disposing of about 3000 tonnes of illegally dumped rubbish. The council said the money spent on this waste removal would be better spent on roads, parks and community buildings. City of Casey Manager for Waste and Recycling Michael Jansen said that dumped rubbish and litter continues to be a problem facing Victorian communities, councils and the En-

vironment Protection Authority. He also identified commercial operators as some of the main offenders. “Council actively investigates offenders and enforces infringements through the Environment Protection Act and council’s local laws,” he said. “In the last 12 months, council has responded to over 1200 litter investigations and issued more than $66,000 in fines. “While this doesn’t come close to covering the cost of waste collection, it is a clear deterrent to would-be dumpers and sends a strong message that illegal dumping will not be tolerated in Casey.” He said dumped rubbish locations within the City of Casey can often be semi-rural areas, building sites and new estates,

each of which are “proactively targeted”. “Some improvements have been identified in some of these locations, but ongoing monitoring is required,” he said. Mr Jansen suggested a number of ways in which people can legally dispose of their waste, including using a transfer station or private waste collection company. Casey residents can also book a council hard waste collection twice a year by calling 9729 9100. The council encourages residents to report illegal dumping by contacting it on 9705 5200 or using the online litter report form at www.casey. vic.gov.au/litterreport. On-the-spot fines for depositing litter range from $295 to $1771 and the penalty for dropping a lit cigarette is $590.

Eggcellent excitement By BRIDGET SCOTT THE Easter Bunny hopped in early this year and paid a visit to some lucky students at Rangebank preschool. Green Gecko group kids at the Cranbourne preschool enjoyed an Easter egg hunt last week, topped off with their hand-made Easter hats and eggs. Educator Barbara Ryan-Perkins, who played the role of Easter Bunny, spread the chocolate treats far and wide while children and their parents ran around to see who could get their hands on some first. Ms Ryan-Perkins said an exciting time was had by all.

Groups urged to apply COMMUNITY groups in the City of Casey have been urged to see if they are eligible to apply for one of the three grant programs which are now open for applications. The council will now take applications for the Community Grants, Environmental Sustainability Grants and Community Service Contributions Program from Thursday 26 March until 5pm on Friday 1 May. City of Casey mayor Mick Morland encouraged groups throughout the municipality to see if they can apply. “Each year the council provides a number of opportunities for local organisations and community groups to access funds to support the work they do within the Casey community,” he said. “The programs are designed for different purposes and to target the many different groups, organisations, businesses, centres and not-for-profit organisations based in Casey or those that do work which supports and benefits the local community.” For eligibility criteria for each grants program, to apply or to find out more about information sessions visit www.casey.vic.gov.au/fundingandgrants

Dr Louis Loizou wishes to announce that Vein Solutions Medical Clinic formally located at the Casey Day Hospital has been relocated to the Narre Warren Specialist Centre 103a Prospect Hill Road (Cnr Narre Warren North Road) Narre Warren PH: 8790 3352. Dr Loizou a Phlebologist (special interest in leg vein disease) has been treating leg veins of all types in the Narre Warren area for 13 years. “We all know what varicose veins look like. We all know that they can be unsightly and can cause lots of pain and may lead to serious complications but what is not commonly known is that stripping surgery is not the only alternative for their treatment”. Modern minimally invasive techniques such as Direct Vision Sclerotheraphy, Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy, Endovenous Laser Ablation and Modified Ambulatory Phlebectomy are used in various combinations to treat leg veins and negate the need for hospitalization, general anaesthetic and long post-operative recovery. These procedures have a high safety profile are effective and affordable and patients suffering with leg vein problems such as varicose veins or even venous ulcers should arrange for an initial consultation where their treatment can be discussed. For further informaton visit our website www.veinsolutions.com.au or ring Narre Warren 8790 3352 or main rooms in Kew 9855 0990 for a consultation.

A CLYDE school which was merely a paddock of dirt a couple of years ago celebrated its first birthday last Wednesday. Rivercrest Christian College, which now boasts 174 students celebrated one year since its first day last Wednesday, 22 March. Executive principal Geoff Grace said it was hard to believe the school had already been operating for 12 months. “It seems a relatively short time since Rivercrest was a concept in our heads and on paper,” he said. “To see this turn into a vibrant new school community has been an exciting journey. “What was a paddock a couple of years ago has been transformed into a wonderful, engaging learning environment for our young Rivercrest students.” He said while the school was still in its early days, he held high hopes. “The best thing is that the Rivercrest journey is only in its infancy and we pray that there will be many fruitful years ahead,” he said.

OWNERS of deceased animals found on the side of the road will now be notified, thanks to a change in standards. Animals which have been killed on the road will now be scanned and owners notified after additional standards were recently established. Cranbourne resident Tracey Prillwitz was concerned over the previous laws which meant pets would not be checked and owners would not be notified if their animal had been found dead. “I have two dogs and if something happened to them I would hate it, and could not stand not being notified,” she said. “They’re absent and you never find out why.” Councillor Gary Rowe suggested the changes and said animals would now be scanned and owners notified. “Scanners weren’t always readily available,” he said. “Now council has ensured that there is appropriate equipment to undertake checks.”

“It will help provide closure for owners.” Council has also reminded people – now is the time to ensure their pets are registered with council. City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland said that any cat or dog which was more than three months of age must be registered in terms of where they reside. “Registration fees help provide a range of important petrelated services within the City of Casey,” he said. “Council has issued animal registration renewal; notices to all of the pet owners of dogs and cats in the municipality.” He said it was the pet owner’s responsibility to ensure their animal was registered and payment was made by 10 April. Animal registrations fees help provide services which include: Daily updating of the City of Casey Lost Pets Register. Reuniting lost pets with their families in up to 68 per cent of cases. Collection of lost and wandering pets, including 24-hour

service during peak periods. Provision of cat cages for hire, to trap feral or wandering cats. Investigation and potential prosecution of dog attacks in private and public places. Regulation of Domestic Animal Businesses to ensure dogs and cats sold in Casey are healthy, well looked after and meet mandatory microchipping requirements. Investigation and potential prosecution of alleged animal cruelty cases. Monitoring and regulation of restricted breed, declared dangerous and menacing dogs to ensure the safety of the Casey community. Investigation of reports to the State Government’s Dangerous Dog Hotline. Regular events including discounted micro-chipping days. Animal registrations can be paid online via council’s website at www.casey.vic.gov. au/pets or via BPAY, Australia Post or over the phone by calling Customer Service on 9705 5200.

PROUD students from Cranbourne West Primary School sat with their principal after being presented with achievement awards last week. Each term, 28 students are selected for awards to acknowledge their effort and achievement at school. Twenty-three students, one from each home group,

received a principal’s award which included a certificate and a small prize for positive behaviour. An additional five students were also selected for their consistently excellent behaviours and attitudes, and received a community award from O’Brien Real Estate. Parent and community li-

aison for the school Debbie Nobbs said the students selected for the O’Brien Real Estate award are those who role model the values and behaviours the school would like to see all students aspire to. Those of persistence, respect for both people and their belongings, and a desire to always do their best.

Smith out, Smith in By JARROD POTTER A FAMILIAR face will be at the helm of Cranbourne Women’s Football Club this season as assistant coach Kris Smith steps up to the VWFL top job. With 2014 coach Shaun Smith heading up to Bendigo for work opportunities, Kris Smith was keen to take the reins. The former Berwick/ Cranbourne assistant coach has been an integral part of the south-east women’s football community and is ready to help push Cranbourne back up the ladder. “It’s good – taking on the top job is an interesting one,” Smith said. “It’s surprising as I wasn’t expecting it – was expecting Shaun to be here this year – but he got that job at the Bendigo Hospital and that was the end of it.” It wasn’t just the playing group at Berwick and Cranbourne that benefited from Shaun Smith’s tutelage as Kris Smith honed his own coaching based off advice from the former Melbourne spring heel and previously from Berwick WFC coach Darren Logan.

Kris Smith will take the reins at Cranbourne Women’s Football Club Picture: JARROD POTTER this season. 68692 “Learned plenty of him (Smith) and learned plenty of Loges – Darren Logan – the previous coach before him as well – he was the coach

of Berwick before I started there and the two of them together taught me plenty,” Smith said. “Just about club culture, how

to be organised, run great training sessions – just the regular stuff you think you know, but you don’t really know until you get there.” Recruiting has gone well for the Eagles, with former Melbourne Uni player Tess McAvoy topping the list while gun duo Danielle Hardiman and Bianca Jakobsson seem to have put their sidelining long-term injuries behind them. Kirsten Macleod (shoulder) is the only major injury carried over from the pre-season, but she hopes to return to the blue and gold jumper by Round 3. Youth Girls players Hayley Wildes and Brittany Maroney round out the new recruits as they join the senior side from the South East Juniors competition. With numbers ballooning out towards 50 players, the club is also considering putting a third team into the VWFL in 2016. Cranbourne’s second VWFL season is set to kick off as its Division-1 team clashes against St Kilda Sharks at noon Sunday 12 April at the Peanut Farm Reserve.

Vikings cut down by tall Cavaliers

TigerSharks move north By JARROD POTTER OUR best swimmers will battle the rest of Australia as the Casey TigerSharks prepare for another gut-busting Australian Swimming Championships campaign. Josh Beaver, Matson Lawson, Holly Brettle and Tyrone Dobrunz are set to take on the Australia’s finest swimmers at the championships – held from 3-10 April at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. TigerSharks coach Ben Hiddlestone said despite a varied preparation – with some casting their gaze more towards Rio qualifying than World Champs – the quartet is ready to have a crack at another international qualifying encounter. “They fly out Thursday morning and we’ll see what happens up there – fingers crossed,” Hiddlestone said. “Got a bit of a mixed bag preparation I suppose – bit of ebb and flow in the lull before the Olympic year.” Commonwealth Games medallists Josh Beaver, from Tooradin, and Langwarrin’s Matson Lawson are primed for a world championships place and rate highly in the 200m backstroke and 100m backstroke respectively. Coming off his best year in the pool – with three Commonwealth Games medals earned in Glasgow alongside his ticket to Singapore for the Swim Stars meet in September – Beaver is out to impress once again as the prospect of national selection arises again for the 22-year-old backstroke specialist. “It’s hard to say but Beaver

is probably looking the best so far,” Hiddlestone said. “They’ve just come out of altitude – so you always get great peaks then great troughs form in training after that.” Beaver’s usual sparring partner Lawson is also on the hunt for more Australian success as the dual Olympian/Commonwealth Games swimmer will take to the water for the 100m freestyle to round out his national campaign. Former Victorian state record holder Holly Brettle will be out to rise back up the ranking of her beloved individual medley (IM), with the 21-year-old Beaconsfield swimmer set to impress in the 400m IM, qualifying seventh fastest in the country, and the 200m IM (eighth). “She’s had no injuries which has been a blessing this season,” Hiddlestone said. “400m IM will be her main event, but she’s got a lot of races. “Holly has a lot, the most out of all of our guys… it will be good for her to have her main race on the last day to get the sharpness throughout the meet.” Tynong’s Tyrone Dobrunz is the fourth TigerShark at the nationals and will take on Australia’s best in the three breaststroke disciplines. The TigerSharks contingent is not only battling for national glory, but a chance to represent Australia at an upcoming international swim meet including the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia and the 2015 World University Games in Gwangju City, South Korea.

FOUR bigs to the floor dominated the Vikings as Casey’s tallest timber excelled against Blackburn in its 84-77 win. With Casey’s mountainous forwards stopping any Vikings’ charge, the Cavaliers were able to turn around their form and push back into Big V Division 1’s top four. The Cavaliers stormed the defensive end to keep Blackburn without an offensive board in the second term. Stewart Baird’s men would eke out a 4130 half-time lead before the Vikings started to regain composure and sink their shots. Fighting efforts from Chris Payne (22 points) and Michael D’Agostino (14 points, 8 rebounds) were not enough to storm the Fortress as Casey held on to earn its second win of its inaugural Division-1 season. Double-doubles from Matt Witherden (19 points, 11 rebounds) and Lester Strong (13 points, 11 rebounds) were complemented nicely by sixth man Dean Johnson (15 points, 9 rebounds) and star recruit Brent Hobba (15 points, 9 rebounds) nailing their shots to round out the triumph. Casey is set to take an early-season Easter break this weekend before heading to Keilor to face the Thunder on 11 April. It was a tougher outing for the Casey women however, downed 54-69 as Chelsea proved too strong on Sunday afternoon. Best of the Cavaliers were Jess Szalek (12 points, 7 rebounds) and Sammie Johnson (10 points, 10 rebounds) while Tarryn Wilkin (9 points, 10 rebounds) went within a hair of snaring her first double-double in Cavaliers’ colours. The Cavaliers women face Keysborough on 12 April at Springers Leisure Centre.

Stingrays left floundering By JARROD POTTER WELCOME to the big league. It was a harsh arrival for the Dandenong Stingrays as the visitors were shown little hospitality in a 5.9 (39) to 14.10 (94) Gippsland-style dissection. The Power was well-and-truly on while the Stingrays floundered – as lateral switches in the defensive end and a shocking kicking efficiency proved lethal for Dandenong throughout the clash. The switching and kicking left little doubt to the crowd who was in charge as Dandenong’s lack of football acumen was inverted by the Power, who worked to the fall of the ball, fought for each other and made a contest of every stoppage.

Dandenong held on throughout the first term – snaring the early lead through skipper Lachlan Williams (two goals) and fresh-faced forward Josh Battle (two goals) - before the Power took the lead and refused to give it back for the rest of the afternoon. Defender Brandon White was positive early – effecting a number of spoils across centre-half-back – but would be brought back to earth, like the majority of his team-mates, in an overwhelming display of Gippsland’s power. The home side flexed its muscles through the second term – restricting Dandenong to a dying minutes’ goal from Battle while at the other end booting four of their own as Nick Argento (two goals) snuck under the packs and worked his way onto the scoreboard.

Bailey Rice (hip) didn’t return to the match after half-time and the Stingrays were left with no bench in the last quarter as cramp and fatigue decimated coach Craig Black’s rotations. Dandenong would be held goal-less in the final term but it could’ve been a lot worse as Gippsland’s only error of the day came from its 10 behinds missing easy-enough chances in front of goals. Bluntly assessing a poor performance, Black had little praise for his side who were well and truly smashed from pillar-to-post by the Power. “It was really disappointing,” Black said. “I think all our preparation had been going alright… to turn up and dish out a performance like that is pretty ordi-

nary from the group.” Dandenong had a hard time finding a best six throughout the mediocre effort, but Harry Prior, Battle and White proved best afield while the captain also kept his cool to affect the contest and continued to toil for the Stingrays in the despondent display. The Power’s Ben Ainsworth (five goals) and leaping Harry McKay (four goals) had the ball on a tether while Tate Marsh and Deven Costigan proved elite in the first run-around of the season. “It was pleasing as a team effort as it wasn’t one or two individuals,” coach Leigh Brown said. “We’ve worked pretty hard over the last few weeks since we narrowed the squad down, to really bring the guys closer together as a group, and it

showed today (Saturday). “I thought their pressure and their defence was really good today and it set up the win.” Gippsland hosts Murray in a Good Friday blockbuster from 1pm while Dandenong faces Geelong Falcons at Shepley Oval on Easter Saturday from 1pm.

Top Cavalier girls duly noted By JARROD POTTER THEY asked their coach if they would get an article in the newspaper after achieving the same lofty feat as their junior Casey Cavaliers counterparts. After getting through an arduous knockout competition to make the Victorian Championship (VC) grade, it’s safe to say we believe the Cavaliers girls have earned this publication’s recognition. The Casey Cavaliers under-20 girls’ junior basketball team – coached by Tim Hewitt – earned the right to play in the Victorian Junior Basketball League’s (VJBL) highest ranked division in 2015. Hewitt was thrilled to see his girls charge through the elimination phase – earning their VC berth after a pair of hard-fought victories over Western Port and Keysborough. “Stoked – we set those goals at the start of the year and to get it was fantastic,” Hewitt said. “We finished third in the pool and were put into the

Casey Cavaliers' Christin Daly helped guide her under-20 girls' team into basketball's VC grade. 136081 Picture: JARROD POTTER knock-out stage where we beat Western Port. Then against Keysborough we played really well that night – defence was awesome, we hit our shots, everything clicked

and we got in. “First time I’ve gotten in to VC, so it’s good to be back at the top.” Hewitt said the likes of Big V development player Christin Daly, Tara Burno and bottomagers Sarah Thomson, DemiLee Devlin and Susan Shaw were some of Casey’s best to look out for in the Cavaliers’ winter campaign. While the inaugural year in any new division can be hard to judge from the outset, Hewitt hopes his Cavaliers can push through to the middle section of the table and potentially have a good crack at finals. “If we can make playoffs I’d be happy, but realistically we’ll sit in the middle of the field,” Hewitt said. “It will be a case of getting that fourth-fifth through to seventh and I’d consider that a successful season.” The under-20 girls are the third Cavaliers team to make the VC grade alongside Casey’s under-14 boys and the under-12 1 boys.

Doves go to dizzy heights By DAVID NAGEL ONCE feared, but recently forgotten, Doveton will be looking to wind back the clock and repeat history in the inaugural South East Football Netball League season in 2015. The Doves, under Steve Henwood, won the inaugural Casey Cardinia league premiership in 2005, but have faded since, having not played finals since finishing top and losing the 2009 grand final to Pakenham. The Doves, who invested heavily in their failed 2013 campaign, reverted to a shoestring budget last year but have now reloaded their guns as they look to shoot to the pointy end of the table. Third-year coach Shannon Henwood - nephew of Steve - insists there is only one destination that will satisfy his club’s desire. “We’ve recruited well so there are no excuses; I’ve told the boys that our expectation is to at least play finals,” the three-time best and fairest winner said. Recruited well... that could be an early contender for the year’s biggest understatement because the Doves have added some real cream to their crop.

At the top of the list is powerhouse ruckman Russell Gabriel, the almost 26-year-old who has played at the elite level for the best part of a decade. Gabriel played two seasons with the Dandenong Stingrays and was captain in 2007, played with Frankston in 2008, before winning a Norm Walker Medal at Doveton in 2009. He has played four of the last five seasons at Frankston, interspersed with a year at East Fremantle in 2012. The Doves have further cured their biggest deficiency from last season – height – with the return of former AFLlisted player Jarrad Boumann from Wangaratta Rovers, the recruitment of 196-centimetre (six foot five inches in old money) Mitch Davies from NilmaDarnum and the return of club stalwart Nathan Wilson from Doveton Eagles. Henwood can’t wait to put that size to good use. “Last season, apart from Frankie (D’Agostino), we had no size,” he said. “This year we’re spoilt for size, with two dominant ruckman and some key-position players to kick to. “Last year we were very defensively minded, and it needed to be that way, but we’ll take it on a bit more this year.

“Obviously defence will still be important but we’ve got the players, the talls, to go the other way now.” The influx at Robinson Oval doesn’t stop there with 2005 premiership player Keith Dobson joining Peter Dye, Malis Lokeron and Nick Battle as new faces from last season. Callum Pattie will pull on the boots after a year in the coach’s box, where he’ll be replaced by former Nyora ruckman Peter Greenstreet. Henwood, who has carried the Doves’ midfield for the last few seasons, will also enjoy the company of former Oakleigh Chargers and Port Melbourne player, Sam Raru. “He’s an inside player, tough around the clinches, but has the polish to finish off his work and kick goals,” Henwood said. “Mitch Viney and Pickles (Michael Henry) are two others that are coming in injury-free for the first time in a while so we’re pretty well covered in the middle of the ground.” Henwood will stand down as captain of the club this season with Henry and Pattie taking on dual responsibility with D’Agostino as their deputy. The Doves kick off the SEFNL season with a Good Friday visit to Hampton Park.

THE round ball game is alive, thriving and growing in popularity in Casey Cardinia among boys and girls alike. Despite wet and dismal conditions, Grices Road Recreation Reserve was a sea of non-stop action last Tuesday as 350-plus boys and girls from local primary schools in Casey Cardinia contested the annual Inter Schools five-a-side Soccer Tournament held to honour the memory of former school principal and long-time Rotarian of the Narre Warren Rotary Club Graeme Maggs. The energy, enthusiasm and all-out endeavour shown by the youngsters was quite inspirational and staff from Melbourne City FC who supported the event were very impressed by the high standard of play throughout. All teams comprising boys, girls and mixed, played five games with elimination matches proving extremely competitive following the

round-robin matches in the morning. Mary McKillop proved successful in the boys’ finale, defeated St Margaret’s/Berwick Grammar School while the girls’ title was claimed by overall champions Fountain Gate over Mary McKillop. WGCA’s clear message on unruly behaviour By DAVID NAGEL THE West Gippsland Cricket Association has cracked down hard on player and crowd behaviour handing out a lengthy suspension to a spectator at a tribunal hearing on Monday night. Former Cardinia junior Tyson Browne has been placed on Cricket Victoria’s banned-players' list for the next five-years after an altercation with umpire James Leys after the WGCA Premier Division grand final between Cardinia and Kooweerup. Leys was left with his shirt-collar damaged and with scratches to his face after the incident which took place as

supporters converged on the field after Kooweerup’s 53-run victory. Browne, who has shown remorse, failed to attend Monday night’s hearing. WGCA general manager Rob Hansen said the association hoped there was a clear message to be taken from the ban. “We encourage and expect high levels of behaviour from all participants whether they be players or supporters,” he said. “We are all custodians of the game and we need to leave it in a better place than we found it.” Cardinia players Simon Parrott and Brayden Browne were also given severe reprimands by the tribunal.

The WGCA has handed down a five-year ban after this incident at the Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Premier Division grand final. 136473
