Soup kitchen stalls By JOLENE OGLE PLANS to create a much-needed soup kitchen in Tewantin for the homeless have been put on hold, despite over 100 calls for help. Tribal Communities founder Peter Holliday announced last week that a soup kitchen was planned for Tewantin. Mr Holliday has since met with council staff on Friday, who advised him a number of permits were needed for the soup kitchen to go ahead. Mr Holliday said he could understand the permits are required for safe food handling and preparation, but was disappointed the planned soup kitchen for 1 April had to be postponed - he had already received 120 calls from people who either needed help or wanted to help with the soup kitchen that was meant to open last night (Wednesday) at the CWA Hall, Tewantin. But Mr Holliday is determined to find a way to help those in need in the local community. “Don’t worry… we won’t be out of action for too long,” he said. “I’ve already been in touch with local groups and I have meetings with people who can help get this up and running.” “So far, a lot of people have offered help. “There is a restaurant in Tewantin that closes at 3pm and have said we could use their kitchen. “We’re also going to meet with other groups who have commercial kitchens.” A Noosa Council spokesperson said council is doing all it can to help Mr Holliday establish the soup kitchen. “We’re helping in every way we can, but this issue does come under the State Government Act for a food permit,” the spokesperson said. “But Council will work towards waiving the fees.” The spokesperson said the venue Mr Holliday uses will have to undergo an inspection and will also require the relevant permits for food production.
It’s only the start
Local architect Robin Bristow has launched a campaign to fight for equal rights.
A LOCAL architect is calling on Noosa Council to join 35 other local governments in a motion for same-sex marriage. Robin Bristow has written to Council asking them to support a motion for same-sex marriage that will be presented to the Federal Government. Currently, Noosa Council has declined to comment on the issue publicly but Mr Bristow has released letters between himself and Noosa Council to the media. In a letter to Mr Bristow, Noosa Council CEO Brett de Chastel said Council was currently focussing on local government issues “that we have jurisdiction over”. “We leave the Commonwealth to focus on their issues and the State to focus on their issues,” the letter said. “Laws about marriage equality is not a local government matter.” Mr de Chastel wrote that since deamalgamation, Council has had no “spare time” to consider “non-council issues”, which is not likely to change in the future. “We are simply focussed on delivering local government services to our community since our reestablishment last year,” he said. “You shouldn’t take this as the council either agreeing or not agreeing with what you are trying to achieve.” Mr Bristow said he is “outraged” by the response from Noosa Council and has labelled council’s alleged refusal to hold a vote on the motion as “stonewalling”. Mr Bristow said he has gained support since the story first broke in local media and awareness marches are planned for the coming weeks. “This is only the start of the campaign,” he said. Albury City Council made headlines in November last year by voting to support marriage equality. – Jolene Ogle

To the rescue: IRB crew member from left; Julian Reid, patrol captain Lorna Macchia and IRB driver Richard Webber.
Rescue second to none By RON LANE THE recent crash of the ultra-light aircraft at Noosa Main Beach on Sunday 29 March at about 7am, was indeed a tragedy. However the response of Noosa’s rescue and emergency organisations shows that when the unfortunate occasion does arise, the teams have a system that is equal to any, giving those involved every chance of survival. What follows gives a good indication as to the teamwork and steps required when helping those in peril. As members of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club were setting their flagged area for Sunday’s patrol, they were approached by a breathless member of the public who said an ultra-light aero craft had been seen plunging into the sea approximately one hundred metres out from the mouth of the Noosa Bar. The man who had witnessed the incident immediately ran from the bar region to raise the alarm. After hearing his remarks patrol captain Lorna Macchia immediately dispatched her Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) team to the area. Patrol radio officers also notified all relevant support groups.
“
Perhaps the most important aspect of all in a rescue of this nature is the response time and this was exceptional …
“On arrival in the area we could see a wheel of the aircraft and on approaching found what appeared to be the pilot floating some 10 metres from the craft,” IRB driver Richard Webber said. “It was a male person floating on his back and he appeared to be unconscious. “Crew member Julian Reid and I were able to bring him on board and as he was breathing, we quickly returned to the patrol beach.” Patrol members immediately began working to stabilise their patient and as this was commenced paramedics arrived on the beach to take control. After working for approximately one hour, the level of stability required for transportation was achieved. The patient was then transported by helicopter to hospital. Also
Guy Tanner at this time as all precautions were being taken, IRB crew member Julian Reid, who during the rescue had become covered in aviation fuel was thoroughly soaped and washed down under the supervision of paramedics. After the patient was removed a debriefing was held for all patrol members involved. Chaired by Duty Officer from Operations Support Group Guy Tanner, this enabled lifesavers to double check their performance and also ensure that all members are themselves calm and settled. “Sometimes some of our people who are very young maybe a bit shaken up by their experience and this gives us a chance to check and ensure that everything is ok,” Tanner said. “These sessions are a vital part of our procedure. In some cases they can not only become a learning curve for us but also gives the lifesaver a

chance to look at themselves, and see how they react in a time of crises.” As a result of the debriefing the following points became apparent and happy to relate all were positive. “The leadership of patrol captain Lorna Macchia was good; this lady was extremely cool headed and organised. “Perhaps the most important aspect of all in a rescue of this nature is the response time and this was exceptional,” said Tanner. “From the time of launching of the IRB craft, to the recovery of the patient, return to the beach, and the arrival of the support teams, paramedics and fire and rescue units the response time was very good. “This tells us that those who come to holiday in our region are, in time of trouble covered by a rescue system that is second to none. For several weeks now Noosa Today has kept our people informed of the ongoing training of IRB drivers and crewies from Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads. Sunday’s rescue only serves to emphasise that the time and money spent in this area is time and money well spent.
Crash victim critical A 57-YEAR-OLD man remains in a critical condition after his plane crashed into the ocean at Noosa Main Beach on Sunday at about 7am. The man was piloting an ultra-light plane when it crashed into the ocean. The man was flown to the Royal Brisbane Hospital by RACQ Careflight helicopter where he remains in a critical condition. It is believed the pilot suffered head, chest and abdominal injuries as a result of the crash. The plane wreckage has since been removed from the ocean.

know and only 15.4 per cent were in support. This poll also found that 53 per cent of residents would be more likely to support a councillor who opposed high-rise development in new areas on the Sunshine Coast. “We have been lobbying the councillors via emails for over 12 months now,” Ms Saxton said. “Councillor O’Pray says he alone has received over 10,000 contacts from concerned residents. “At this stage, we have four councillors who have said they support us 100 per cent.” Development Watch, in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Environment Council and other community groups, is holding a Community Information Session on Saturday 11 April at 2pm at the Coolum Civic Centre. The Mayor, all councillors and Sekisui have all been invited to attend. To date, only Councillor Jason O’Pray has accepted. “At the end of the day, Development Watch asks Sekisui to respect our community and submit its proposal for assessment against our Planning Scheme,” Ms Saxton said. “We also ask council not to facilitate approval of a future development application by amending the Planning Scheme. “If council votes to amend the Planning Scheme, we also hope that this most undemocratic process will be remembered by all at the next council election.

Murder charge A 33-YEAR-OLD Kin Kin man appeared in Brisbane Magistrates’ court on Monday charged with the murder and torture of his twoyear-old son. Shane Pursell Akehurst faces one count of murder, five counts of assault causing bodily harm and one count of torture after his son died on Friday night in Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital. Police will allege the attacks took place in Akehurst’s Kin Kin home, where his son was subjected to numerous acts of violence since December last year. Further charges have not been ruled out for the man, who remains in custody.

group) showed majority support (94 per cent) for permanent job creation. “Residents aged 18-29 were the most supportive of the development overall with 80 per cent of this age group supportive of the proposal, 13 per cent neutral and just 6 per cent opposed,” Mr Aldridge said. One group fighting against the development is Development Watch Inc and they strongly dispute the latest feedback claims by Sekisui. “We monitored 472 of the 648 people it consulted at its Information Sessions and 100 per cent of the people we spoke to were against the high-rise component of the development,” the group’s president Lynette Saxton said. “In relation to Sekisui’s independent telephone survey, we obtained a copy of the questions asked and there is no mention of high-rise or changing our planning scheme. “Only 400 residents were contacted in this telephone survey - this is not a statistically valid survey number for a population of 250,000 people.” OSCAR, the peak association for residents and community associations, also commissioned a ReachTEL poll in November last year, where 1050 residents were surveyed. The results were 46.5 per cent against, 18.9 per cent undecided, 19.2 per cent said they did not
THE 63-year-old woman charged with crashing into two tourists on Noosa Parade last year May will face trial for the horrific crash that left one man without a leg. Nola Barbara Burgess is charged with drink driving and dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm after her car slammed into two tourists on the Noosa Parade roundabout on 26 May last year. One of the victims, a German national, had to have his leg amputated as a result of his injuries, while the other man sustained minor injuries. Ms Burgess appeared in Noosa Magistrates’ Court on 26 March where defence lawyers cross examined key witness and mechanic, Simon Major. Ms Burgess’ defence argued her vehicle may have “unintentionally accelerated” while coming down Noosa Parade, causing the accident - a claim Mr Major denied and said wasn’t possible as the throttle mechanism “operated smoothly and freely” when tested and had no scarring to indicate a jam. The case will now go to trial at a date yet to be set and Ms Burgess is due to face Noosa Magistrates’ Court on 28 July to answer one charge of drink driving.

WITH Sekisui having submitted amended concept plans of their controversial 20-hectare development site at Yaroomba, to Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) on Tuesday the issue is once again brightly in the spotlight. Sekisui is proposing to build a five-star international hotel, conference facilities and residential development on land it owns at Yaroomba Beach. The issue being, that 15 of the 17 proposed buildings are in excess of the town plan, meaning changes would have to be made to the planning scheme to accommodate the development. The local community has slammed the project, holding numerous protests and plastering Yaroomba and Coolum with antidevelopment placards. While little is yet known about the amendments, Sekisui House Senior Development Manager Evan Aldridge is confident that the changes will go through due to proficient community consultation by the company over the past 12 months. According to Mr Aldridge, the team had now received feedback from more than 1000 Sunshine Coast community members, with largely positive results. “As promised the team has been working through the range of comments gathered and is looking at how to best incorporate the feedback into the revised proposal to submit to Sunshine Coast Council,” Mr Aldridge said. “We remain committed to working with the community and council for the best outcome for short and long term benefits to Sunshine Coast residents. “While there is some opposition to the proposal, our community engagement program and independent survey has also found increasing strong support within the Sunshine Coast community. “Based on their existing knowledge, 64 per cent of residents were either supportive or neutral toward the development,” Mr Aldridge continued. The results highlighted majority support for all of the benefits with greatest support for sustainable building practices (82 per cent) and permanent job creation (80 per cent). The survey also highlighted community concerns around the Coast’s 15 per cent youth unemployment rate. Younger residents (18-29 age

Ginger farmers’ zest for life Youth
positive FOR most 24-year-olds, Sunday starts with a hangover and greasy food but for Craig Weston the day means a 5am start on the 170 acre farm he shares with his brother, girlfriend, ginger crop and 50 cattle. But hard work is nothing new to Craig who ran his own bobcat business only a few years earlier, before buying the farm land with his brother Mark. Craig said he never thought he would become a ginger farmer but was encouraged by his neighbour to take up the crop that now covers more than four acres of land. “We had a neighbour leasing land from us and he said why don’t we try (to grow ginger) ourselves,” Craig said. “It’s a good-selling crop, but also high risk with disease. It’s why a lot of farmers won’t grow it anymore, but we’re having great seasons.”
Craig and Mark settled in to learn the trade from their generous neighbour who also helps with labour when it is time to harvest the handpicked ginger. Craig and Mark plant their ginger crop in August for harvesting around April and May each year, with an impressive list of buyers already snapping up the brother’s crop. “We’re currently supplying all the Princes’ IGAs, including Noosa, the Brisbane and Sydney markets as well as boutique stores,” Craig said. Craig shares the workload with his long-term girlfriend Jayde Jones who doesn’t mind helping out anyway she can. “Whenever the boys need me to, I will pick, clean and wash the ginger,” she said. Jayde, 26, who is a personal trainer in Maroochydore, said she never imagined they would end up as ginger farmers, but is loving the challenge of learning a new crop and growing the farm. With only two ginger seasons under their belts, the brothers are already looking to the future with 50
cattle on hand and plans to expand into stud cattle business. Jayde said this is a part of the farming she can really get in to. “I love animals so I love to work with the cattle,” she said. “We made a rule that we wouldn’t name any of the cattle except for the bulls, because we will keep them.” The couple have no plans to take it easy in the future with Jayde busy building her personal training portfolio and Craig determined to expand the business and enjoy life on the land. “We want to get bigger and do better,” Craig said. “We’re already leasing more land to grow more crops.” Youth Positive is a chance to showcase and celebrate the talented youth in the community. Smile masks fears over level of care By KATIE DE VERTEUIL
Kathleen Anschau with son Troy Nicholls.
THE NDIS REFORMS WILL SEE THE DISABILITY SECTOR: away from eight separate State/Territory funding schemes to · Moving one uniform, national scheme. from block funding of disability service provider organisa· Changing tions by governments, to individualised funding for people with disabilities based on individual needs assessments. Australia’s old welfare and charity model of disability fund· Ditching ing, replacing it with a legislatively guaranteed “insurance” model whereby all Australians who meet the eligibility criteria are legally entitled to NDIS funding for all ‘necessary and reasonable’ supports.
TROY Nicholls of Tewantin is one of those people whose smile immediately makes you feel welcome and at ease. The 41-year-old’s bright personality, enthusiasm for life and voluntary work has made him a much-loved member of the local community. It is only in the last four years however, that, thanks to government funding, Troy has been able to move out of home and into a small town house of his own. You see, Troy was born with Williams Syndrome (WS) a genetic condition that is present at birth and affects one in 10,000 people worldwide. His limitations are intellectual, with overtones of Cerebral Palsy. A client at the Wallace Park Endeavour Foundation’s Learning and Lifestyle Centre since it first opened in 1998, Troy visits the centre three times a week. His supported living arrangements mean that he is visited three times a week with in-house help for his cooking, shopping, bank and fitness. With the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to be progressively rolled out in Queensland from July 2016, Troy and his mum Kathleen Anschau are concerned that Troy’s current lifestyle may not be able to be maintained with the reforms. “I think that most parents are as
nervous as I am about what the government will be able to provide once the new scheme comes in,” Kathleen said. “It is still such an unknown entity that we are dealing with. “At the moment the government funding we are receiving provides a ‘very adequate lifestyle’ for Troy, my hope is that this is not sacrificed by the revision of the system,” Kathleen continued. “That we are not any worse off through the NDIS.” The NDIS is a radical new way of funding disability services and supports in Australia. The most significant change is that funding for disability services and supports will be allocated directly to people with disabilities themselves rather than to service provider organisations and the introduction of individualised funding packages. The ultimate aim of this is to ensure that Australians with disability - and their families, where relevant enjoy far greater choice and control over all necessary services and supports. It is hoped that all eligible Queensland residents will be covered by the scheme by 2019. Troy and Kathleen will be one of many local families attending a NDIS Families Forum at Noosa on Wednesday 8 April. Run by The Endeavour Foundation, the forum will be relevant to local families and is a great opportunity for Sunshine Coast residents
to get answers to the questions they have about the NDIS. There will be a range of guest speakers, including parents from Newcastle, whose adult sons both have intellectual disabilities. They will share their personal journey of being in an NDIS trial site and how they have learnt to navigate the scheme. Other speakers at the event will include representatives from the Queensland National Disability Insurance Agency, and the Queensland Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services. “As a parent it is really important that we are able to gain as much information as possible as we enter into this minefield that is going on right now,” Kathleen said. “So it is great that there is an opportunity to answer a few questions at the upcoming forum. “It’s been a big step in my life to move into supported living and I really like where I live,” Troy added. “I really just want this meeting to be good, because I want to stay right where I am - that’s what I’m concerned about.” The NDIS Families Forum will be held on Wednesday 8 April, at Endeavour Foundation Wallace Park Learning and Lifestyle, 54 EumundiNoosa Road, Noosaville. The session will run from 6pm to 8.30pm and all are welcome. For more information 1800 363 328.
Business keen to give penalties a push By JOLENE OGLE IN a bid to raise employment rates and reduce the strain on local business, South Australia has abolished Saturday penalty rates. The change is part of a landmark agreement between the Shop Distributive and Allies Employees’ Association (SDA) and Business SA, and also includes the halving of Sunday penalty rates and in return, permanent staff can choose not to work on Sundays or public holidays. The agreement is currently voluntary for both employers and employees, but Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president Danielle Taylor said penalty rates were always a “topical” issue for business owners, with some employers forced to reduce their op-
erating hours to remain profitable. “This not only reduces employee income but also negatively impacts the customer,” she said. “The South Australian model is interesting because it aims to help both employees and employers. It will be interesting to see how it develops and whether something similar can be implemented in Queensland.” CCIQ Noosa said they are hopeful weekend penalty rates reform will come to Queensland. CCIQ Noosa president Sarah Fisher said CCIQ had contacted the SDA Queensland branch to see if it would support Queensland business using the template enterprise agreement here. “We hope they respond favourably,” she said. “The South Austra-
lian agreement has paved the way for an easier change at a time when Noosa and Sunshine Coast small businesses need to see penalty rate reform. “This agreement shows that when it comes to penalty rates, workers and employers can find a middle ground that allows businesses to offer increased employment opportunities.” Ms Fisher said it was pleasing to see the SDA South Australian Branch agree to a practical solution that benefited their local economy. “Hopefully we can have these discussions here,” she said. “This deal provides a workable example for other employers and unions across the country keen to overcome the barrier to growth

Share the road WHILE a recent RACQ survey of Queensland motorists has found there to be significantly more road rage incidents on the State’s roads than five years ago, police statistics show that this is not the case in Noosa. Almost 88 per cent of motorists surveyed felt road rage had become a more common issue in the last five years, and eight out of 10 female motorists believed the incidents were getting more severe. According to Noosa Heads officer in charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight the comparison of the first three months of this year and the same period last year indicates one less complaint recorded about ‘road rage.’ “Last year there were 25 complaints about road related issues such as speeding cars, and this year so far there have been 24,” Sen Sgt McReight said. Anecdotally, he and his team find the hotter the weather, the more impatience and anger on the roads with nights such as Christmas Eve especially testing as people are known to rush, instead of taking a deep breath. While Noosa’s figures are positive, RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie said road rage should not be tolerated on Queensland roads. “Motorists shouldn’t have to fear aggressive or violent attacks by other drivers,” Ms Ritchie said. “Some people quickly for-
RACQ advice to drivers to help avoid aggressive driver behaviour is to:
· Remain calm and relaxed · Drive defensively and make allowances for errors by others a ‘share the road’ rather than a ‘me first’ approach to driv· Adopt ing · Use the horn sparingly and only as a warning device unpleasant encounters or delays in the past and concen· Leave trate on the rest of the trip · And… don’t try to police other road users’ behaviours. RACQ research in 2011 into the most concerning/ annoying road user behaviours suggests that Queensland drivers are most concerned about:
1. Drivers who follow too closely/tailgate. 2. Motorists who increase their speed when you try to overtake them. 3. Motorists who throw litter out of vehicles. 4. Motorists talking/sending text messages on hand-held mobile phones. 5. Motorists who incorrectly use indicators - indicate too late or fail to indicate at all. 6. Motorists displaying aggressive behaviour - blowing horn, verbal abuse, hand signals. 7. Motorists who are not courteous - allowing room to merge/ change lanes. 8. Motorists who do not move over to allow others to overtake. 9. Motorists who block intersections. 10. Motorists who turn from the wrong lane - at multi-lane roundabouts.
get that we are all equal on the road… we are all trying to get to our destination quickly and safely.” Ms Ritchie said RACQ wants the Queensland Police Service to put a greater emphasis on targeting anti-social driving behaviours, including tailgating and cutting off other drivers. RACQ is working with the University of the Sunshine Coast on better understanding
driver behaviour and the need for more courteous driving. “It’s about sharing the road and we want to make sure that every time you get behind the wheel you don’t forget to treat others kindly on Queensland roads,” she said. “Whether you’re a motorist, cyclist, motorcyclist or pedestrian we all have to work together. “No one group owns the road.”

Poppies make the trek By KATIE DE VERTEUIL WITH only a few weeks until Anzac Day, commemorative acts are already taking place across the country. The Boyd family of Noosa were among the hundreds of people who had the honour of placing a poppy on the 100Y Memorial Plaque which will travel on board the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship and form the centrepiece of the ‘Onboard Memorial Ceremony’ that is to take place off the

Carrying 11,500 poppies, each bloom representing a fallen Anzac, the plaque was at the docks of the cruise ship, at Sydney’s Circular Quay, when Jenny Boyd and her two sons came across it. Honoured to have been invited to place a poppy on the plaque, Jenny said the experience had been particularly significant for her son Codey, given the family’s personal connections with war.
“Codey’s great, great grandfathers fought in World War One,” Jenny said. “Codey’s great grandfather was part of the Rats of Tobruk in World War Two during 1941. “We were very honoured to be involved in such a gesture.” It was however, for his ‘Poppy’ (grandfather), a dedicated member of the local RSL Club for whom Codey truly wished to dedicate the flower to. All aboard, Book in for a bargain just hop on GETTING around Noosa these Easter holidays is as easy and a hop, skip and a jump - hop on board the free holiday bus, skip the parking hassles and jump into all Noosa has to offer these holidays. From Friday 3 April to Sunday 12 April, travel is free on all local Noosa Sunbus services with the exception of routes 620, 622, 630 and 631. The Noosa Council, along with the Easter Bunny, officially launched the Easter Free Holiday Bus initiative last Wednesday and expect more than 32,000 people to use the service. Council planning and infrastructure director Martin Drydale said the council was proud to offer the service in co-operation with Sunbus and Translink. “The free holiday buses help reduce traffic congestion in Noosa and encourage residents and visitors to give public transport a try, he said. “Last Easter more than 32,000 people boarded the Free Holiday Buses, and more than 43,000 hopped on at Christmas which shows just how popular this initiative is. The free services include the following routes: Route 626 - Sunrise Beach to Tewantin. Route 627 - Sunshine Beach to Tewantin. Route 628 - Noosa Junction to Noosa Parklands.

Plus the following additional temporary service: Route 064 - between Peregian Beach and Noosa Heads. For residents living between Peregian and Noosa, instead of catching Route 620, the temporary service, Route 064 (operated by Sunbus) is for you. The Boreen Point Flexilink service and Noosa Council Cabs services will also be free from 3 to 12 April (normal booking procedures apply). Generally, a weekend timetable will operate on most public holidays. Timetables are available at www.translink.com.au or call 13 12 30.

THE annual Bookfest is back again from 1 May with a bigger venue and more than 25,000 books on offer. Run by the Rotary Noosa Daybreak, the Bookfest is one of the biggest book sales held on the Sunshine Coast and raises funds for local charities and Rotary projects. The Bookfest will run for three days from Friday 1 May to Sunday 3 May and will be held at the Noosa Leisure Centre this year. There will be an array of books for sale, great prizes as part of the raffle, plus a barbecue and special kid’s corner that will feature books for just $1. Rotary Noosa Daybreak spokesperson said many Bookfest regulars returned their books bought last year, and invested in a whole new library to tide them over for the following year. This year, the sales from the Bookfest will go directly to Smart Pups, a Pomona-based not-for-profit organisa-
tion that specialises in training assistance dogs for special needs children. “The cost to train a Smart Pup is similar to that of a guide dog, the spokesperson said. “And the waiting list for these pups is growing. Funds raised will also be allocated to a Rotary project to help build and maintain water supply and sanitation in remote areas of the Solomon Islands. “The living conditions in many of these islands in the outlying areas of the Solomon Islands are extremely primitive, with basic care often beyond the reach of many people, the Rotary Noosa Daybreak spokesperson said. “Provision of these basic facilities can prevent the spread of preventable and potentially fatal illnesses. Rotary Noosa Daybreak said a portion of the funds raised will also be used to support local campaigns and projects.
Last year's Bookfest raised muchneeded funds for Guide Dogs and other local organisations. “We are often called upon during the course of the year to assist many worthwhile local charities and causes, so a small proportion of the proceeds will be held in reserve to assist local charities on an as-required basis, they said. If you have any inquiries regarding Bookfest, or have books you wish to donate, please call 1300 791226 or visit www.noosaheadsdaybreakrotary.org Bookfest will be held at the Noosa Leisure Centre in Wallace Park on Friday 1 May to Sunday 3 May, and is open from 9am to 5pm daily.

I’m also proud to say some of the winners were existing customers and the others are now more aware of how we help in giving our community a real say its own future, Wayne said. Elma Reilly is a Tewantin local who takes a keen interest in reading Noosa Today and her as well as banking with Bendigo Bank. “I think it’s important to be aware of all the great things happening in Noosa and was thrilled to be one of the prize winners. Barely afloat
RIGHT on to the wonderful Jessie who smashed her biology test with an A grade! You go girl!
A BIG thumbs up to the IRB rescue team at Noosa Heads. We were on the beach on Sunday morning and we were impressed with how fast you were to react.
THE captain of ‘Team Australia’ appears unable to float many boats or keep his head above water. Coming the raw prawn made him unpopular with the top brass and the crew who have a double dose of disillusion. Some loyal, senior, crew members appear unable to deal with hostile landlubbers or to steer ‘The Budget’ through the narrow, turbulent waters of its first (2014) emergency. ‘Team Australia’ captain, while happily whistling ‘The Good Ship Lollypop’, assures the crew that both ships are on an even keel, sailing into smooth waters. The Budget, about to be re-launched with a new manifesto for 2015, is steering clear of submarine obstacles. Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.

WRITE off to the disrespectful person who found my very valued stingray skin wallet in Sunshine Beach with all my cards and precious photos of my son and partner inside. There wasn’t even any money you could have spent. What good is it to you? And what are you going to do with a $50 children’s footwear voucher? Remember the word karma. A MASSIVE thumbs down to the ARS truck which pulled out onto the Walter Hay Drive roundabout without even looking and while on the phone. And a big write off to his fellow passenger who gave me the finger when I honked to let him know I was there. Shame on you. You should be extra careful as you are in a large truck and could have caused serious damage or death!
I’M NOT yet sure whether it’s the weather, or is it just Queenslands politics. The Hills Hoist has to come out again for the new government’s dirty washing. It’s to be hoped the wind doesn’t blow too strong or we will be back in the laundry again. Maybe next time we shouldn’t use a cold wash cycle. It’s obviously not getting rid of the dirt. Would it be out of order to suggest we would also be better with an Upper House? We need some sort of back-up as a security on decisions made. E. Wright, Sunrise Beach.
Immortal clarification ONCE again I take keyboard in hand to write a note correcting an article in last week’s Noosa Today. Actually the story about the schedule for the series, Shakespeare’s Globe on Screen, was not in error but was slightly misleading. The first play announced, The Duchess of Malfi, is not a work of The Bard. Reading the announcement one would think this play was Shakespearean. Not so. Written in 1612-’13 by John Webster, the tragedy was first performed in 1614 at the Blackfriars Theatre and only later at the Globe Theatre. Personally I was quite pleased to think there was a Shakespearen play I’d never heard of and
JULIE Hemsley of Marcus Beach caught this little Loggerhead turtle hatchling breaking through the sand on Saturday 21 March. We recently featured the hatchling’s mother in Lenscape (Noosa Today 5 February). If you have a beautiful image of Noosa, or perhaps you have caught local wildlife in action, send your photo to newsdesk@noosatoday.net. au. got more than a little excited. Over the years, and in many theatres I have enjoyed nearly all of his plays. With the exception of the socalled King Plays they are worth seeing over and over, whether on stage or in film. The King Plays are a tad too grim for my sensibilities. Alas and alack, it was not to be. However I do look forward to attending
the plays offered in this year’s Shakespeare’s Globe on Screen series and will likely find equal enjoyment in The Duchess of Malfi. Although I do wish the editor had made it clear that Old Will had nothing to do with it. Bill Sheehy, Noosaville.

Backing the Originals By KATIE DE VERTEUIL CRAWDADDY’S saw a full house last Friday night for the East Coast Originals first fundraiser of the year. While the final count of funds raised is still to come, organisers are confident that about $2000 has been collected. East Coast Originals’ (ECO) Marcus Pluckhahn could not have been more pleased with the turn out. “The community’s response to Friday’s event was just fantastic,” Marcus said. “The venue was also really accommodating,
which made for an awesome night.” The money raised at the fund-raiser will go towards keeping the ever-popular Peregian and Cooroy Originals concerts continuing throughout the year. Marcus wished to thank everyone’s continued support of East Coast Originals as without this, the concerts would no longer be able to go ahead. “Peregian Originals, especially, is a gigantic stepping stone for up-and-coming local musicians as it gives them the chance to perform on a regular basis, to perform to a really well educated music audience,” Marcus said.

Kids bowled over by senior-level skills By JOLENE OGLE GONE are the days of lawn bowls as an “old person’s sport”, with Sunshine Beach State High School students taking to the greens to bring bowling back. Twice a week for the past nine weeks, over 50 students from Sunshine Beach SHS and volunteers from Tewantin Noosa Bowls Club have come together to enjoy an hour of bowls. Program founder and volunteer leader David Muir said it is all about getting young people out onto the green and playing the game. “When you look at bowls, most of the champions are in their twenties,” he said. “It’s all about sharing bowls with youth.” Mr Muir applied to Queensland Bowls in 2014 for a grant to help buy 15 sets of bowls for the students. After receiving the funds, the bowls program launched with 25 Year-11 students taking up the challenge. This year, the numbers have more than doubled with over 50 students learning the skill of bowls from experienced volunteers and current players Mr Muir, Bernie Smith, Dennis Coulter and Evelyn Coghlan. Mr Muir said he hopes the success of the program will encourage more schools to get involved and create an inter-school competition. “The local schools attending have shown we have talent in our local area of Noosa and with the desire to continue bowls, the students could

appreciate the efforts from the volunteers. “It’s interesting to see how the students grow throughout the bowls course,” she said. “For the boys, they will leave this course as young gentlemen after being with the older men. “It’s great interaction between the boys and older men.”

I saw a minister on the news this morning saying people can just ask not to work Sundays if they don’t want to shows how out of touch they are with the real world” Lindy McAskill: “Say people who don’t have to miss out on activities with family and friends because they can’t afford not to work weekends” Lynne Kelly: “No one is going to want to work on a Sunday without a substantial financial gain. Saturday I can understand, but Sunday? No, no, no. So I guess employers will have to shut up shop on Sundays” Chris McDonnell: “Good move that reflects the change in the retail and hospitality industries. There is still a penalty for Sunday work, by the way. Weekends have become ‘normal’ in these industries. Extra penalty for Sunday is a bit of a farce anyway as it is a day of religious observance for very few these days”

18 NOOSA TODAY | Thursday, 2 April, 2015
By KATIE DE VERTEUIL EVERY Tuesday morning at around 9am, five gentlemen gather around a small table at Pomona Bakery, strong coffees in their hands, wit and cheek in their words. Peter Farcas (wood worker) and his friends, Wayne Guse (photographer), Rolf Hohlt, (wood sculptor), Jacques van Geel (charcoal, ink and pencil artist) and Michael Downey (painter) make up what is known locally as the Tuesday Men’s coffee club artists meetings. While it is their passion for art which has brought the men together it is their unique personalities and interests that bring them back each week. “I said to my wife the other day that I have always wanted to create a group of artists who could meet once a week, wear berets, drink strong coffee and discuss life,” Peter said. “Her reply was, ‘you’ve done that.’
“I guess we have already done that, without even noticing… no berets yet though. “The nicest part is that we are all different and because of this we can talk forever about anything,” Jacques added. “The only thing we argue about is sport… oh and whose wife is held on the highest pedestal,” Michael laughed. The group was started back in 2006 by Peter and Michael whose friendship dates back to the Darwin footy field in the late ’80s. “When I moved to Pomona in 2006 me and Mike used to meet and have a coffee and chat and argue about rugby league for an hour - we followed different teams you see and mine was always weaker,” Peter said. As time passed the other gentlemen joined the group, with Robin Gregory the newest member. While they may not have solved the prob-
lems of the world, they have found mate-ship discovering and encouraged each other’s artistic interests along the way. Deciding to come together to present an eclectic selection of fine art, interesting sculptures, masterful wood working and nostalgic drawings the gentlemen currently have their very first combined exhibition on display at Pomona Railway Gallery . “Last of the Summer’s Wine” will be on display until the end of April with many of the proceeds from this exhibition to be given to a charity of the artists’ choice. “Art is a great stress relief because you are 100 per cent in the moment - it’s not something that we do fulltime but an escape from the real world every now and then,” Peter said. “It is great that we can exhibit our works together and if there is a good response it will motivate us even more to continue with our passions.”
Still living the national sporting dream Benny’s
beat BENNY PIKE
LAST Saturday, 28 March marked three years to the day until the 2018 Commonwealth Games kick off. There were some wonderful news stories over the weekend to remind us what it was like in 1982 when Brisbane hosted the friendly Games. I can tell you first-hand what it was like in Brisbane - as my role at the time was to promote the event for the two years leading up to the September action. You have to remember this was long before Dean Lukin, Robert De Castella, Lisa Curry or the Mean Machine became household names. The big sporting names in those days were Greg Chappell, Jeff Thompson, Hector Thomson and our own Grant Kenny was still at high school. Noosa’s first taste of Games came during this time when 1958 marathon winner Dave Power and family took up residence in Noosaville in an aptly named Games Motel.
The former New South Welshman was, of course, regularly pounding the pavements and loved the National Park course. His love of the sport is now etched in history and the success of Deek’s win was the impetus that sparked the revolution that followed with the annual Noosa Triathlon Festival. I regularly spoke at Rotary, Lions, beer and beef events, businesses, social events, schools and clubs during this time to build up the anticipation of what I truly believed would change Queensland forever. I lost count of the times I was told “to stop dreaming’ or “cut it out Benny, we didn’t win any gold last time”. Plus the Moscow Olympic boycott was still a pretty sore point and left a lot wary of anything to do with amateur sport. The latest Roy Morgan report detailing the nation’s most successful participatory sports only backs up the success of the ‘82 Games. Let’s take swimming - almost one in every two children under 14 and 10 per cent of adults take to the water regularly. And with millions of kids in Learn to Swim programs, the sport is here to stay. While swimming leads the way, it’s closely
followed by soccer, cycling, athletics/track and field, basketball and gymnastics. Sadly the footy codes Aussie rules and rugby league are well back, while soccer leads the way in team sports, getting the bounce over basketball, cricket and netball. Although no doubt cricket will get a boost after its World Cup victory last Sunday, Aussies are becoming pretty active in new exercisebased pursuits such as hiking, aerobics, and surfing. One of the strongest aspects from the data gathered was that kids are increasingly getting involved in team sports. I can only encourage all Mums and Dads to ensure their child plays sport, I know most kids just want to enjoy the company of their mates and fun they have being involved. Sure, some will go on to be stars but the majority will grow old remembering the grand final they won or lost. Congratulations to all competitors who competed in last weekend’s state lifesaving titles, a terrific result for all especially the Coast, as it was a trial run for next year’s national titles. Until next time.

Plan before you work from home bydesign WITH DI HENSHALL THERE are many people who have offices or studies at home. People are working their businesses from home now more than ever before. With the advent of new technologies we have some amazing, national and even international companies all working behind closed doors in houses that look nothing like the high-rise office blocks that would traditionally hold such tenants. But what do we need to make a home office successful? It should be remembered that we supposedly spend a third of our time in bed and a third of our time working. I have written many articles about the importance of making the master bedroom feel like a retreat from the madding crowd, but less focus on what we need to make our working lives more enjoyable. Whether we are working in a conventional office or a study at home there are certain aspects that need to be considered. Choosing the right room in the house for a home office is the first priority - it is not advisable to have a ‘nook’ tucked into the side of the kitchen, or a space at the side of
the dining room or lounge, if you plan to work there regularly. There is nothing worse than seeing papers strewn around and a computer stuck on a bench when you’re not working, or worse still, when friends call over. Recognise how much realistic space you need to work efficiently and with room to breathe. If a dedicated room for a home office is available, ideally this room would be well lit and well ventilated and a sense of business created by allocating storage for files and paperwork that can be hidden or closed away. Storage in home offices should be designed for the specific purpose, for example, if you use lever-arch files, design the cabinets to fit these, with the provision for expansion. Wall mounted storage units above the height of a computer, but still within arms’ reach, make it easy and accessible when working. Choose furnishings that are practical, yet still in keeping with the style the rest of the house, rather than opting for standard office fittings that may be less conducive with a stylish home environment. Standard cupboards are in most cases not really practical, it is far better to consider overhead storage and drawers. Position the desk so that when working it is easy to see people walking into the room rather than having one’s back to the entrance to the room. If space allows, a comfortable, upholstered chair for visitors will make the office more
If you plan to work at your desk regularly, make sure it is in a well-lit space that offers storage and is comfortable. welcoming, as will wall treatments such as a different paint colour to the rest of the house or even wallpaper, to give the room its own character. Lighting in any room is important and a home office must have adequate and appropriate lighting over the work surfaces, rather than relying on a central ceiling light which will invariably place the worker in shadow. Add some downlights directly
over the desk space or add a ‘task light’, table lamp or even standard lamp in front of the work area. It is exciting to work from home, but don’t underestimate the comfort level that will be required to make it successful - if up to a third of your life is going to be spent in this zone, make it work for you with the same consideration that any business would consider when designing for their workforce.
To Rachel Sellman We would sincerely like to thank you and the Century21 team for the incredible result you achieved for our us. You have facilitated the sale of our house we thought could only be a dream, and achieve a price beyond our expectations - all within about 30 days. We believe that your commitment and dedication to us as clients has been unsurpassed. First home, more choice THE Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) has renewed its call for the reinstatement of first home owner grants for existing housing ahead of the year’s first State parliamentary sitting. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said strengthening first home owner incentives should be towards the top of the political agenda for the Palaszczuk Government in 2015. “This is an important issue out there in the community, with so many Queenslanders wanting to see first home owner grants made available to buyers of all property types,” she said. “We believe it was a short-sighted move to restrict first home owner grants to new home purchases, but there’s a real opportunity now to put that right. “We’ve already held some very positive discussions with Treasurer Curtis Pitt on this issue and we’ll continue to make the case for this important economic reform. “Reinstating the full spectrum of first home owner incentives would unlock millions of dollars in investment, delivering an important boost to the Queensland economy. “It would also greatly assist Queensland’s residential housing recovery and help thousands of extra Queenslanders to realise their dream of home ownership.” Ms Mercorella said there was no sound basis for the preferential treatment which
currently exists for purchasers of newly built properties. “There needs to be a level playing field for all first home buyers in Queensland,” she said. “When grants for existing housing were abolished in 2012 first home owner rates experienced a marked decline, but this could be reversed with the reinstatement of a more even-handed scheme. “The current two-tiered system favouring one class of homebuyer over another has simply resulted in thousands of Queenslanders being locked out of the residential real estate market.

Roads go big on some TLC WALTER Hay Drive is set to reopen before Easter with more road works to begin throughout the region, as council delivers five million dollars in works as part of a roadwork program. Council said they are on track to complete the $2.2 million upgrade of Walter Hay Drive before Easter, with the project now a week ahead of schedule. Noosa Council Civil Operations Manager Allan Hull said, with weather permitting, the road will be fully completed and open to traffic before the holidays begin. “Closing Walter Hay Drive while we completed the resurfacing has saved ratepayers more than half a million dollars and slashed the project by at least two weeks,
and we’ve appreciated motorists’ patience,” Mr Hull said. It’s the latest in more than 25 roadwork projects completed across the shire this financial year under council’s five million dollar 2014/2015 asphalt overlay and re-seal program. Gibson Road is the next cab off the rank with a $744,000 upgrade to begin after Easter. It will deliver road-widening, bus stop improvements, pathway linkages, kerb and channelling construction, improved cycling facilities, landscaping and a reseal between the Eumundi-Noosa Road and Thomas Street intersections. “Gibson Road will remain open
throughout and we are fortunate to have received $200,000 from the state government for the project, which has saved ratepayers money. We also secured just over $550,000 worth of Roads to Recovery funding toward the Walter Hay Drive project in another win for the community,” Mr Hull said. Council is working through more than five million dollar’s worth of budgeted reseal and road rehabilitation works, with many projects already complete, and more on the way. “We’ve upgraded River Road at Tewantin, Noosaville’s Janet Street, Avocet Parade at Peregian Beach, Seaview Terrace at Sunshine Beach and Nairana Rest at Noosa Heads to name a few.”

More speed and more furious
Fast and Furious 7 will blaze into Noosa BCC Cinemas on Thursday 2 April.
THEY'RE fast, they’re furious and they’re about to blaze right back onto the big screen with the seventh instalment about to hit Noosa Cinemas this week. Continuing the global exploits in the unstoppable franchise built on speed, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of ‘Fast and Furious 7’. James Wan directs this chapter of the hugely successful series that also welcomes back favourites Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges, Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black. Fast and Furious 7 follows Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) as he seeks revenge against Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his crew for the death of Deckard’s brother Owen. Rated PG-13, the action-packed film will mark the final appearance of Paul Walker, who sadly passed in November, 2013 with filming only half-completed. If you really just cannot wait, Noosa BCC cinemas will also be holding an exclusive advance screening on Wednesday 1 April at 7pm. Tickets are $21. Fairy tale or… Chick Flick? By KATIE DE VERTEUIL LAST Wednesday evening elegant gowns were donned, and tiaras glistened as ladies young and old gathered at Noosa’s BCC Cinemas for the premiere of Cinderella. The ‘Chicks at the Flicks’ event proved once again to be a popular affair with delicious cupcakes, a lolly buffet and refreshing punch delighting cinema goers as they eagerly awaited what Disney had in store for the age-old favourite. With a sparkle of magic, a tickle of wit and one dreamy prince-charming, the film took

the audience on a journey of love, loss and the power of kindness. The story begins at the very beginning, with Ella (Lily James) and her mother and father lighting up the screen as the ‘picture-perfect family’. It is not long, however, before Ella’s mother falls ill and passes, closely followed by the death of her beloved father. Finding herself at the mercy of her cruel stepmother and just as nasty stepsisters, Ella struggles to stay strong and true to her mother’s words to “have courage and be kind”. While it is a tale known by many, this ver-
sion of Cinderella still cleverly gifts viewers with surprises along the way, keeping eyes glued to the screen throughout the 113 minute running time. Lily James could not have been better cast for the role as the innocent Ella, and the same can be said for Cate Blanchett, who everyone loved to hate as her evil stepmother. As for prince charming, trust me ladies, he (Richard Madden) does not disappoint. Rated PG, Cinderella is the perfect feelgood flick for the whole family. The vibrant graphics and charismatic characters of the popular fairy tale will leave you
smiling and with a little extra belief in the impossible. Oh yes… and googling ‘where on earth can I buy some of those divine glass slippers’ - Carrie Bradshaw eat your heart out! Noosa BCC Cinema’s next Chicks at the Flicks will be Pitch Perfect 2, on Wednesday 6 May. The event begins at 6pm and the movie will be screened at 7pm. All tickets are $25 and include a Chicks at the Flicks gift bag. For more information or to purchase tickets call 07-5447 5130

IN THE love fest that follows a successful festival of surfing, you tend to forget that not everyone loves the “eight days of pure stoke” as much as we do. I know a few long-time locals who used to be involved with the festival and no longer are, for various reasons, and who actually leave town to avoid it. Anyway, horses for courses. Until members of my family started participating, I used to try to avoid the lead-in week to the triathlon for fear of copping a mouthful from scowlyfaced Lycra-clad jocks doing their early morning speed trials, so I understand the sentiment, even though I know that cyclists, like surfers, come in all shapes, sizes and temperaments. The main issue with the surf festival seems to be that it brings hordes of surfers to town from all over the world. There is no doubt that festival week in March is one of the most crowded of the year, particularly if the surf is good. While four or six surfers at a time revel in the best longboard contest conditions of their lives at First Point, the outer bays are teeming with competitors getting in practice sessions alongside recreational surfers. Or so I’m told: I’m always too busy to get out there. But Noosa’s five point breaks are crowded whenever we enjoy a run of good swell, particularly when a Coral Sea low feeds us from slightly north of due east and our points offer groomed perfection while the rest of South East Queensland is out of control. This has been a fact of life for many years. (If you watch Paul Witzig’s Hot Generation, you will see that even half a century ago, a good swell brought quite a crew to town.) It is something we share with all the

great surf breaks of the world. Try surfing Malibu on the one great south swell of the summer, or anywhere on the North Shore of Oahu between November and February. Or closer to home, look at the madness of the Snapper Rocks “Super Bank”. Compared to these places, Noosa remains relatively relaxed, most of the time. In the past week, surfers have reached out to us, through the letters page of Noosa Today and via email, about “so-called professional surfers” allegedly making a meal of it at National Park on that near-perfect day, Monday, 16 March. Local surfer James Geitz wrote to NT after being dropped in on repeatedly during a two-hour session: “Maybe Phil Jarratt and the festival organisers need to remind these guys and girls to show respect to other surfers ... Just because they are professionals photographed for magazines or have been in surf movies does not exempt them from surfing etiquette ... ” Visiting surfer Peter Coleman emailed the festival office: “I am forced to send you this after my experience at National Park this morning. I was surfing with a mate who is a local
and we were repeatedly dropped in on by a bunch of young blokes who were having photos taken. They were blokes who had surfed in the contest and should have displayed a little more of the spirit of surfing than they did. Not only did they drop in, they waited until we were well involved in sections and still went, thus spoiling the wave. This is just disrespect.” Peter continued: “I watched your comp and it does not seem to engender or promote the qualities I witnessed this morning, but these blokes were simply elitist and thought they were better than everyone else, so should have all the waves.” While I’m glad Peter doesn’t seem to hold us personally responsible for the sins of others, James apparently thinks a quiet word from an old bloke wearing a lanyard and a sponsor’s cap might do the trick, which I somehow doubt. However, the side issue that both surfers raise is that the offenders were being photographed and filmed and therefore seemed to assume that others should vacate their “studio” or suffer the consequences. This is an unfortunate and growing problem.

Young guns of 2015 - Two local surfers were absolute stand-outs at the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing 2015. Sam Cruikshanks was definitely most improved in the men’s ranks, taking out the Beachbeat Logger, while Noosa Mal Club junior Tom Morat was all class in the boys’ division. Tom is seen here in a familiar nose perch. Picture: Ian Borland/NFOS Since the new hipsters began to roam the shores with their bushranger beards and stovepipes, Noosa has been targeted as a makebelieve Nirvana where lithe girls and hirsute chaps frolic in a bucolic wonderland between sessions riding their logs at perfect point breaks no-one else knows about. This was a fairy tale in Paul Witzig’s day and it is a fairy tale today. Only the drugs have changed. But if you check out any of the last half dozen or so “cool” and “alternative” surf movies, you will see the same story (and many of the same faces) in all. These little fantasies are made on the smell of an oily rag, so not surprisingly the filmers come to Noosa at festival time to take advantage of the fact that all of the best traditional surfers in the world are already here. In my experience, most filming crews are polite and genial, but there are exceptions. And as James and Peter have found, there are no bit parts for old fart recreational surfers. The best policy, I’ve found, is to keep surfing and keep smiling. Do unto others, and play the old guy card when you have to - couldn’t see you, couldn’t hear you, and if you punch me and I die, you’ll go to jail for a very long time.

LOCATED in the heart of Noosa in one of the region’s best resorts is View restaurant, where diners can enjoy scrumptious meals while surrounded by the stunning Noosa natural environment. View is headed by the talented executive chef Michael Jenkins. Classically trained, Michael infuses the flavours of Noosa through classic French technique to create a menu unique to the Noosa region. Choose from the roasted barramundi fillet, celeriac brandade, crisp pancetta, sage, parmesan and almond crumble or the flame grilled New Zealand king salmon, chestnut puree, apple and fennel and for dessert, View offers apple and rhubarb tarte tatin with vanilla ice cream or the melting chocolate pudding with white chocolate cream and chocolate crumbs, plus many other delicious delights. To sweeten the deal, View is offering two specials including two courses for only $49 or diners can select an entrée, main and dessert from the a la carte menu for $59 from Sunday to Thursday. View also offers live music every Saturday from 6pm to 9pm; the perfect soundtrack to a relaxing night with good company and great food.

No suntan is safe “Sunburn can occur in just 15 minutes at any time of year in Queensland, even on cooler winter days when the temperature is lower. “Teens also need to be mindful that sun exposure adds up during the day and can significantly damage skin and cause sunburn. The national survey also found 72 per cent of Queenslanders aged 18-24 supported the government’s full ban on solariums, which took effect on 31 December, 2014. “Despite the full ban on solariums, the sun is just as dangerous and young people need to be aware of the risk and protect their skin from this harmful source of ultraviolet radiation, Ms Clift said. “Our message to young Queenslanders is that no suntan is safe, and baking in the sun can be just as lethal as an artificial tanning bed.
THE Cancer Council has issued a warning to young Queenslanders about the dangers of sunbaking during the Easter break, with new research showing 34 per cent of 18 to 24 year olds still like to get a tan. The National Sun Protection Survey data found 16 per cent of young Queenslanders still believe a suntanned person is healthier, and 37 per cent consider their risk of getting skin cancer as low. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said the findings were alarming. “It’s concerning that so many young Queenslanders still desire a tan and think that tanned skin is a sign of health, Ms Clift said. “There is nothing healthy about sunbaking – even before the skin changes colour, significant damage can occur, greatly increasing the risk of cancer.
“We urge all Queenslanders to follow five steps to being SunSmart this Easter: Slip on protective clothing; Slop on SPF 30 or above broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen; Slap on a broad-brimmed hat; Seek shade; and Slide on wraparound sunnies. Every day, around 370 Queenslanders are told they have skin cancer. About 133,000 non-melanoma skin cancers and 3000 melanomas are diagnosed across the state each year. Sun protection is required when the UV Index is three and above, which is all year round in Queensland. If you’re heading to the beach or enjoying the great outdoors this Easter, check out the sun protection times each day at sunsmart.com,au or bom.gov.au/ uv, or install Cancer Council’s SunSmart app.
BEAUTICIAN Slip, Slop, Slap: Cancer Council data has found 34 per cent of 18 to 24 year olds still like to get a tan.

Caring for our carers “There has been substantial research into the effect of moving into an aged care facility for care recipients,” Ms Axsentieff continues. “A less studied field is the impact of this transition on the family. “Primary caregivers often devote many years of their lives to the wellbeing of their partners or parents, only to then experience stress and anxiety when the time comes to place that loved one in an aged care facility. “Providing coping skills education and support to caregivers should reduce the amount of guilt and depressive symptoms they experience. “In turn, this will support a more engaging relationship with facility staff and ultimately create better quality of life for care recipients.” Those wishing to volunteer for the study can phone 0411 955 421 or email ajh034@student.usc.edu. au. Ms Axsentieff’s project supervisors are USC’s Professor of Psychology Mary Katsikitis and Lecturer in Psychology Dr Prue Millear.
By JOLENE OGLE WE ALL have them – moments when we forget what we were looking for or when we forget to hang the washing out. Send in your senior moment to competitions@noosatoday.net.au for your chance to win two tickets to BCC Noosa 5 Cinemas. Congratulations to this month’s winner Julie Bramstead and thank you for sending in your senior moment last month. This month, locals share their senior moments. “My senior moment? Looking for my sunglasses when they’re on my head. I’ve done that a million times.” – Katie Wright “Only last week I left my house without taking my dog with me, even though we were going to the vet. I didn’t realise until I pulled up outside the vet and I didn’t have my dog with me. Bumper thought he had got away with it! But I had to go back to pick him up.” – Maggie Archer
USC Master of Clinical Psychology student Amanda Axsentieff is leading the project, called Finding Benefits Study, which is being run in conjunction with NoosaCare Inc.
“Is it just me, or do other people always walk into a room, forget what they were there for and then leave only to never remember what it was. It will always be a mystery to me and I only hope it wasn’t something important.” – Bob Bravestone
1178874-KK14-15
A UNIVERSITY of the Sunshine Coast research project is aiming to help families cope with the ongoing stress that follows the placement of elderly loved ones into aged care facilities. USC Master of Clinical Psychology student Amanda Axsentieff is leading the project, called Finding Benefits Study, which is being run in conjunction with NoosaCare Inc. Ms Axsentieff is calling for primary carers who have experienced placing a loved one in an aged care facility – be they wives, husbands, sons or daughters – to participate in the study. She said our rapidly aging population was placing strain on those charged with the care of elderly family members. “As the number of older persons increases worldwide, greater stress is placed on family members to care for individuals experiencing illnesses and disease associated with old age,” she said. “Numerous studies have suggested that caring for the elderly places a considerable toll on a person’s physical and mental health.” Ms Axsentieff said the Finding Benefits Study aimed to help families find meaning in being a caregiver.

Shirts come out on top In the
ditch POMONA BOWLS SKIRTS versus Shirts last Wednesday proved a very successful afternoon. The Shirt teams took the honours in the first set of 12 x two-bowl triples, 63 to 34 and although the ladies rallied and won the second set of 12 games 52 to 48 it was not enough points to give them the overall win. Shirts 111 d Skirts 86. Better luck next time ladies. Friday twilight bowls was very pleasant under the cloud cover. Winners were Chris Wilson and Bill Alford; runners-up Desley O’Neill and Norm Walmsley. Jackpot was won by Col Carruthers and Charlie Dewhirst. Twilight bowls will be held on Thursday afternoon, commencing at 4pm due to Easter Friday. Make sure to put your name on the board. Saturday afternoon’s final of the men’s A Grade championship between Bill Alford and Lorry Axiak - what a great game of bowls. Bill led right from the first end playing some beautiful draw bowls while Lorry was a slow starter. Just over half way through the game, down poured the rain causing a 10-minute break. Lorry came out fighting and came close to catching Bill. However Bill was not to be denied the championship and dug his heels in to win 25-17. Congratulations to Bill our new club champ. On Sunday was the feudal match between Pomona Mountain Men and Tewantin-Noosa River Men. While they were close games, the Mountain Men kept their calm and won four rinks for a total overall aggregate of 26 points. Well done Mountain Men, you also looked great in their brand new shirts. Thanks Tina for all your work. - Kitty and Jack TEWANTIN NOOSA BOWLS NO doubt we are all looking forward
to some cooler weather for the great outdoors. Tuesday ladies ‘nominated’ fours: Winners were Joan Pyers, Kerry Wilson and Mary Ross; Runners-up were Evelyn Coghlan, Heather Birt and Margaret Dodd. Wednesday men’s pairs: Winners were Tony Howard and Bob Mulvogue (2+26); runners-up were Lloyd Cairns and Alex Douglas (1 + 14 ‘on a countback’). The jackpot of $275 was not won and carries over. Thursday night’s twilight (6-9) open pairs: Winners were Scott Roney and Tony McAnelly; runners-up were Kerry Wilson and Robyn McAnelly. ‘Friendly Friday’ open triples: Winners were Peter Sprately, Geoff Glynn and Ivan Ivanusec; runners-up were Connie Johnston, Val Reinicke and Peter Larke. The Jackpot of $250 was won by teams Sinclair and Grott. Due to Easter, our Friday bowls will be played on Thursday this week and ‘Open’ pairs on Saturday. On behalf of our members we would like to wish everyone a safe a happy Easter.
- Green Master NOOSA HEADS BOWLS A BUS-LOAD of our top lady bowlers, and supporters, headed off to Tweed Heads last weekend for the finals of this year’s Super Challenge series. Noosa got two sides into the top eight but didn’t quite get to the Sunday grand final of the Bronze division. Section 8 went down to Swifts from Ipswich in the Saturday morning quarter-final, while the Section 5 girls had a good win over Tugun. In the afternoon semi they were drawn to play Swifts, and went agonisingly close, having a draw in the fours match and going down by five in the triples. A great effort by our small club, and a good excuse to break out the champers. Last Tuesday men’s pairs winners were Steve Curry and David Deane. Runners-up prize went to Bill Burkitt and Peter Gale. The top triples team on Wednesday was Cath Haddock, Fran Coules and Tricia Parker.
Open jackpot pairs on Friday saw a win to Ralphe Rickman and John Boyle, with Geoff Lewis and Judith Boakes the winners of the first-round losers section. Saturday triples winners were Roy Cornish, Ray Day and Juleen Mayze. The April edition of the popular Noosa 1500 Open Pairs will be played on Easter Monday, and this will be the last edition of this event which has been such a success since it began in February 2013. This year’s Golden Bowl, an evening to celebrate the end of the Super Challenge season, is set down for Saturday 11 April. And a reminder that Garyth Day, a benefit bowls day for the ailing Garyth Williams, will be held on Saturday 18 April. - The Chalker COOROY BOWLS A VERY busy week of bowls was had this week. The ladies had their final match in the Hinterland Challenge against leaders Mapleton. The rain stopped play stopped play for about half an hour but this didn’t dampen the spirits of both teams. Two very enjoyable games were played with Mapleton the victors. Tuesday jackpot pairs were down in numbers last week. Roy Wall and Jack Kirkman were the winners with +23. Business bowls winners were Newbies, SEC, Getting Plastered, Mutineers, Oddballs, pages, Belvedere and Jacobsons. In the High Rollers challenge, JeLS had a very tough match against the Honey Pots on Thursday night only winning by a few points. New team INCAS had their first win against Rob and Co. Bushrangers had a narrow win (1 point) against 101s who had three substitute players. Other winners included Tag Team, Night Owls, High Rollers and Royal Flush. The first round of the A Grade championships was held on Sunday morning. David Hateley-James, Bevan Mahoney and Lynne Hateley-James go through to the next round. - Julie Ainscough

THE Eagles had their third home game in a row this week, with mixed results. The kids are having fun and trying their hardest, with the youngest players improving with each game. Results for this week are as follows: Noosa Gold Under-6 played against Noosa Black; result 5 nil to Noosa Gold. Coaches award: Flynn Westman and Joshua Bostelman. All the Noosa Gold boys had a great game; today’s winning game was a real team effort with goals scored by Flynn Westman - 2, Joshua Bostelman - 1, Finn Corcoran - 2. Great defence by Matthew, Phoenix and Eddie. Under-7 Noosa Gold played the Mooloolaba Rockets in a close match, but were too good on the day winning 4-3. The star of the day Bella ‘the boot’ Hillegers, impressed all with her footwork, scored two of the goals and
took home the player of the match trophy. Harrison Howard scored the other two exciting goals for the gold. Noosa Gold Under-8 played against Bli Bli Ravens defeating them 4-3. What a hard fought, last-minute victory for the boys after leading 3-0. A great effort by all players leading to goals by Riley Mitchell and Thompson Nimac (3). Coaches award: Codey Boyd for his outstanding first half effort in goalfoiling repeated attacks and second half field play. This is a super result after losing last week where Iggy Gerber was awarded coaches award for his vision and solid defence. Noosa Black Under-8 played against Pacific Swordfish with the result 3-2 to Noosa. It’s three in a row for Noosa Blacks-U8, defeating Pacific Swordfish 3-2. Joe Maskell took home this week’s encouragement award, he had his eye on the ball and almost got his first goal but
was just beaten by the buzzer. Keiran Dow gave his all and did some great midfield runs and showed his tackling skills, while Jake McDonald stayed in the back line and defended at least four potential goals. Goal kickers - Alaska Rosenkranz (3). It was an exciting game right up to the last minute. Noosa Gold Under-9s played Buddina Dolphins. Noosa lost 9-nil but had a much better game this week. Without any subs on a hot morning the team did well to keep the Dolphins from scoring too many goals. Tom Holmes took home the coach’s award for a great first half in gold. Noosa Gold Under-10 played Buderim Dragons at Good Shepherd Luthern College. Noosa played a great game but however lost. The score was 5-0 to the Buderim Dragons. Player of the week was Brian Birchall.

Sunshine shines in the surf By NATASHA FABULIC LAST Friday was predicted to be a record breaking hot day for March and for the Queensland State Youth Surf Lifesaving Championships. The weather however was nothing compared to the red hot performance from the Sunshine Beach Nippers who dominated throughout day one at the championships hosted by Maroochydore Surf Club. For the Under-11 Girls – Jemima Bromage, Grace Howard, Lulu Korac, Grace Otto, Mikayla Smith, Abbie Tolano, Haley Tolano and Freya Wilson this was their first State Carnival experience. They were off to a flying start with Gold in the Surf Team, Silver for Cameron Relay Team 1, fifth for Team 2, along with many top-eight placings adding many points to the overall club score. The Under-13 Girls – Sophie Bolton, Siena Liesch, Charlotte McKinley Jess McMaster and Ruby Nolan – were strong also, taking home Gold for the Surf Team, Silver for the Cameron Relay, Silver for the Surf Board Rescue and Bronze for the Surf Board Relay. The Under-13 Boys – Zac Bromage, Ben Dods, Lachlan Franklin, Max Moore, Flynn Ross, Elis Jeynes and Max Smallman – also had many top-eight placings and medals awarded, notably, Gold for the Surf Team, Bronze for the Under-13 Male Cameron and Bronze for the Surf Board Relay. This year included Under-15 events and Sunshine’s Ellie Bissaker took home Gold in the Rescue Tube Race. The bus trip home was high spirited with the clever Under-11 Girls writing a new club chant but not to be outdone the boys also came up with a new club song to entertain the team during debrief.
On Saturday spirits seemed a little flat as some kids fell from the dizzy heights of team medals to the harsh reality there was two more days of competition to get through. But it wasn’t long before the calls coming over the loud speaker from the Under-14 arena that seemed to suggest the only club at the carnival was Sunshine Beach. In an amazing effort the Under-14 Boys – Zach Brewer, Tom O’Connor, Mav Pettigrove, Jonty Redwood - took Gold in Surf Teams, Cameron Relay, Board Relay and a Silver in Board Rescue. With the girls - Mikayla Barwicki, Talisa Brady, Olivia Emanuel and Katie Gleeson – following closely behind with Gold for the Surf Board Relay , Gold for Surf Board Rescue and Silver for the Surf Team. Under-15 Girls – Ellie Bissaker, Amber Dods, Hayley Moore and Alice Tilleard – also chipped in with a very solid Bronze in the Surf Teams with the buzz starting to build “those sunshine kids can really swim.” The final event of the day was a storm warning and the request to drop tents before leaving so the team was prepared for a wet return the following day. Despite heavy rain to the south and north of Maroochydore, the weather held reasonable on Sunday with just a little drizzle pre the March Past event where the March Past team carried the club reel and flag proudly amongst 26 other teams. Sunday was individual semis and finals day. There were moments of disappointment and moments of joy but overall, the Nippers were just happy to still be part of the final day competitions. Sunshine fielded a competitor in all but four of the water events on Sunday – truly an outstanding effort - and came home with medals galore and top-10 results in almost every event.

Outlaws hold up Wolves By DAMIEN MULHOLLAND THE Noosa Pirates and Gympie played Wondai Wolves in a well executed 36-4 win over the weekend. The squad is gelling more and more each hitout, with a huge welcome back to the field for Shaun Wilson, Jake Harney and Danny McMah. They definitely added some venom to the joint venture which also showed a cameo from coach Zippy. Coach Zippy will have some headaches in picking the first Outlaws’
squad coming into the first competition game where they play the very physical Caboolture Snakes up in Gympie on Saturday 18 April – get on board to start the season with bang.April 12 is the annual golf day and another day to book in - spots are going fast. Prizes, food and drinks are all included. This will be a good day out for golfers, hackers and even the cart drivers. Reggies’ coach Scotty has been signing on new and old players – they have been training at Pirate Park Tues-
day and Thursday evenings from 6pm. Only three weeks until kick off fellas. Congratulations to ex-Pirate Moey Mbye in kicking the Bulldogs to victory in golden point against the mighty Tigers. Another ex-Pirate, Captain of the Roosters Jake Friend will be returning to the field very soon, so all the best fellas. The Pirates wish everyone a happy and safe Easter, and look forward to seeing you all for next seasons kick off. Why are Pirates Pirates? Because they just aarrgghhh!
The Outlaws are showing the way.
Pirates rule the high seas - oh yes that arrrr By TRACI HOZIER It was Pirate against Pirate for some of our Under 7s.
An Under-9 Blue player fends off Coolum. Tolano. The boys will have nightmares about the sidelines with all players guilty of flirting too often resulting in the boys doing more defence than necessary. Bailey Hozier and Lachlan Ward were both rewarded with a couple of sneaky tries taking advantage of quick plays catching Palmwoods off guard. All enjoyed the physical game with much improvement, and fun had by all. Today the Under-9 Blue boys had a home game against Coolum Colts. The defence from the whole team was excellent keeping Coolum from seeing the try line. Jett, Lachy, Cohyn and Cody showed some strong running and great tackling. Joshy, Roy and Benny were great at organising the team. Jhemi, Duraki and Stoan also showing some great skills in attack and defence. And one of the boys showed great sportsmanship offering to help out the numbers for Coolum and played a magnificent game and was a very deserved winner of the man of the match - Dylan Alchin, awesome work. Keep up the good work boys. It was another amazing game for Under-9 Yellow. The communication and team work blows everyone away and every game their plays shocks us again and again. Nick took out man of the match for his consistent backing up and being there for his team. All of the newbies have come out of their shells and are part of one big happy Pirate family. Coaches Jodie and Leah
wish everyone a happy Easter and look forward to seeing everyone back after the break. Under-10 Blue had an excellent game against Palmwoods. The kids played with great enthusiasm for the entire game. After a tough match last weekend the coach was extremely happy that the team played the game we had trained and spoken about playing during the week. It was definitely a try fest and some excellent defence keeping Palmwoods scoreless. Jake scored a double with some strong running and Joel a double with some smart moves. Welcomed back front rowers Ashton and Liam, both playing well - Ashton scored and also set up one for Jack who showed some terrific backing up. Calieb, Ivan and Arlo also scored. Perhaps one of the better tries came through a great backline play from Joel to Ivan to Danyal to Nancy who scored with some determined strong running. Eric, Harry and Daniel gained valuable metres with some good runs throughout the game. A terrific team effort. This week against Coolum the Under-10 Yellow boys started a bit slow and with some poor defence they allowed the big forwards from the opposition to score. After a good rev up, the boys really started to play well and got the scoreboard ticking over nicely with some very impressive football. Caleb Hart scored strongly 1178866-AM14-15
NOOSA Pirates Jnr Rugby League - Round 4 THE boys from Under-7 White really clicked today in both attack and defence against Palmwoods. Tries were scored by Cooper Drinnen, Sam Proctor and Bailey Drinnen. Lukas Byers scored his first try and then backed it up with a second one. Cooper Ward played well at first receiver and also ran the ball hard all day. Will ‘Big Willy’ Macrae was unstoppable and Rhy North showed all the skills with palms as well as a hit and spin. Man of the match Jai Bruggy played fantastic with an off load, strong runs and no coach nagging. Everyone again tackled well. This team is very talented and all the boys improve every week. The Pirates’ Under 7s were all definitely winners today with the Yellow boys taking on the Blue team for what was a clash of mates on home territory. The Yellow boys stopped at nothing to ensure that the Blue team didn’t get much of an opportunity to score, with Brandon leading the assault in the tackling department along with Beau, Riley and Jackson. All the boys maneuvered well around the field in attack to score plenty of tries, with Hayden, Lachlan, Jack and Cooper getting across the line along with their team mates. Brandon Dwyer received player of the match for his non-stop determination in making every tackle count. Led by their coach Tim Payne, the boys are developing into a well drilled side and all continue having fun. Palmwoods Devils ventured to the Pirates home ground at Cooroy to play Under 8 Yellow, with unseasonally high temps and humidity made for a difficult match. Thanks to Paul Dwyer for running with the boys this week in what was a very physical match. The much bigger Palmwoods team meant that good tackling technique was called for. The boys with only six players were assisted by the younger Rhy North and Bailey Drinnan who played admirably against bigger and faster opponents. The usual suspects worked hard up the middle Pierce, Bailey, Zahn and Zeke with Lincoln showing great courage playing out the game with a hand injury sustained early on. Plenty of off loads in running showing the boys confidence levels are growing every week. A standout in defence this week, Lachlan was chasing everything along with Joe

as did Jackson Smith. Ryan Fox showed us his pace by scoring again this week. Jed Bullman scored twice, the first one coming off a new set play that the team has been working on during training this week. Once again Charlie Cook was very hard running the ball and tackled with enthusiasm. The second half saw some very hard and at times, physical footy. Coach Issac reminded the boys after the game about the importance of not being sucked in to the ways of the opposition. Man of the match went to Charlie Bond who had some good long runs and tackled well. Under-11 Blue were courageous today and showed they can match what was a big and strong defensive Beerwah side at Beerwah. Player of the match Zane O was in his usual top consistent form in both defence and attack. It was a clash of the titans until the 11th hour when Beerwah got over to claim the win in the last minute. Congratulations to all the boys doing a top job so early in the season. Leanne was kept busy tending to injuries, hope Cooper and Ty have recovered. The coach was very happy withtheir performance in a hard hit out today. Thanks to Cathy for her efficiency in managing the team. The Under-12 boys came out of the blocks firing, completing their sets and getting up off the line in defence to successfully score three unanswered tries but sadly couldn’t convert any of these. They still held an early 12 nil lead. Due to some fatigue and silly mistakes causing a lot of turn over, Nambour were able to get back in front leaving the boys to chase down to the end to lose in a great game 26-18. Best on ground went to Heath Robinson for never giving up and pushing foward all day in attack and defence, also great games by Lachlan Flett who took the boys foward all day and also scored himself a double. And Jack O’Connell who kept the outside solid all day and made some outstanding runs. It wasn’t the best start for the Under-14 Blue boys with Beachmere scoring a couple of quick tries. However the game soon turned around. The boys started talking to each other, moving off the line and charging in with fierce tackles. By half time, Pirates led by 22-14. The second half was stronger again with the boys tackling consistently and not giving Beachmere room to move. With 16 minutes left on the clock the game finished due to an injured Beachmere player, the Pirates wish him a speedy recovery. Player of the match was Toby Burton scoring two tries. Special mention to Reef Carlile and Corey Mackenzie. Well done a great game that Brett would have been proud of! Thursday, 2 April, 2015 | NOOSA TODAY 61

Great captures, more on horizon By JACK MANGROVE NOOSA’S looking good for Easter. The last week has seen some sensational captures and with Easter fast approaching things are looking good for anglers. The river mouth has been a hive of activity with some nice mangrove jack and jewfish being caught on live baits, soft vibes and soft plastics. Fishing close to the rock wall has been the trick and with the incoming tide, jack are hitting bait as it is brought in on the tide. Mixed catches of trevally and tailor have been taken on small metal slugs, also on the incoming tide. The Dog Beach and sand bags are still seeing plenty of good-sized whiting both on baits and surface lures. Woods Bay and around the current line has had some good trevally as well as good-sized bream and the odd jack. Gympie Terrace will be busy with family’s fishing over the break and they will be well rewarded with bream whiting and flathead. Up river jacks, flathead and school jew have been taking prawn profile soft plastics. Drifting down on the outward tide has been a successful way to catch a feed. On the beach, the southern beaches like Peregian and Marcus have some great gutters at the moment, a well-
timed evening fish on the incoming tide should see some nice jewies with large flesh baits like mullet or salted bonito as well as local squid perfect for the job. Up on the north shore, big schools of swallow tail dart have been hitting every bait that hits the water, great fun for the kids with the odd good one among them. On the reefs, it’s been a field day, pelagics and reef fish have been hitting the decks, Sunshine Reef has seen longtail and yellowfin tuna along with spotted and spanish mackerel. Small slugs matching the bait they are feeding on has been doing the job. Trolled surface baits and lures have also been picked up by the pelagics. On the bottom squire, moses perch, coral trout and sweetlip have all been on the chew, soft plastics, live and dead baits fished hard to the reef have been getting good results. One of the charter boats did a run up to Double Island with good results, pearl perch, venus tusk fish, moses perch, mowong, hussar, coral bream, amberjack, spotted mackerel, mahi mahi and cod all managed to make their way into the boat. North Reef has also seen good numbers of spotted and Spanish mackerel, with a good mixed bag also from the bottom. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.

Redwood won a bronze medal in the Belt Race. This is one of the old traditional events and was always considered to be blue ribbon. There is an old saying – belt swimmers are born they are not made; definitely one of the toughest swims on the calendar. While talking Sunshine, congratulations to their Supporter Club. At the recent Clubs Queensland black tie dinner, Sunshine Beach was named best Surf Life Saving Supporter Club, in the Small Clubs Division. This makes it two years in a row, so well done to all concerned. Noosa
Are you on track? ………..to achieve or maintain your
$$$ Financial freedom Q. What is Financial Freedom ? A. Financial Freedom is quite simply the ability for your investments and super to pay for your lifestyle. Most families who have had good earnings during their working years will need between $60,000 and $150,000 of income to maintain their quality standard of living in retirement. This means they will need more than a million dollars in investments.
was somewhat similar in competition with some outstanding results from the young up and coming. One name that comes to mind for Noosa was Cooper Williams. This young man competed in the Youth Championships and finished with an incredible four gold medals. “This young fellow,” said coach Clint Irwin, “is outstanding. He has surf awareness well beyond his years. The way he can read surf conditions for someone so young is truly outstanding.” Interesting to note that on Saturday despite the fact that his titles were contested on the weekend prior, he came down to Maroochydore Beach to just help his club mates in any way possible. Alexandra Nolan bronze medal in the U-19s Iron woman and Lana
Rogers gold in the surf race, backed up by Jordan Mercers gold in the Open Surf Board, shows strength in the ladies division. After a couple of seasons of struggle, the Noosa boat section is again on the rise. The performance of their U-23 men's crew to win the gold medal was on Saturday the talk of the beach. Hit hard in the way out they were in last place, turned the cans in third place, and came home in the finish of the year to win gold. In the words of boat sweep/ coach David Tomba (the Pocket Rocket), “That row was all heart and guts one of the best I have ever seen.” Not to be overlooked, the masters from Noosa also went well with Ross Fisher winning three gold medals and the 200 plus boat crew winning
gold and the 160 plus winning silver; just to name a few. With competition playing such a vital role in our clubs, names such as Pettigrove and Redwoods at Sunshine and French, Mercer, Irwin and Tomba at Noosa, you can be sure that the future of our young is in good hands. Well done to all concerned This week at the Bulli Surf Club in NSW, boaties from Queensland and New South Wales will gather to bid a sad farewell to surf boat legend Robby Meijer. Robby obtained his bronze in the Woonona club in 1968 and joined Bulli in 1978 and in 2001 joined Noosa giving us five great years. To his partner Cheryl remember us at Noosa and as always, we are just a phone call away. More next week on the legend of Robby Meijer.

THE state lifesaving championships are over and once again Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads have shown that there is plenty of talent among the young competitors; let’s never forget that these young ones are our future. For Sunshine veteran senior member Warick Redwood said, “For us our U-17 boys have performed well in both team events as well as individual. The club came home with some 10 medals and are very happy. There have been many outstanding performances, but perhaps one that really stood out was Mick Sloman. This young man is someone that we think we will be hearing a lot of in the seasons ahead. Another plus for Sunshine was the fact that U-17 competitor Brock
