Ebola scare in Geelong AMBULANCE officers went into biohazard emergency mode when they transported a suspected Ebola sufferer to Geelong hospital last month. The man displayed flu-like symptoms after recently returning from a cruise-ship tour that included Africa, a health care professional told the Independent. Ambulance crews adopted biohazard precautions when transferring him to hospital.
The Independent has seen private photos showing health staff in head-totoe protective gear while wheeling a patient on a gurney into emergency. The health care professional, who produced the images and spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Independent the patient was suspected of carrying the deadly Ebola virus. But Barwon Health denied any patients with “probable Ebola” had presented at the hospital. “Barwon Health has not had any patients with probable Ebola present at Uni-
versity Hospital Geelong,” spokesperson Kate Bibby said. “In accordance with the Victorian Ebola Disease Response Plan, no notifications were given regarding a patient with Ebola-like symptoms. “We treat all returning travellers who present with a fever as high risk and isolate them accordingly until investigations clear them. “As part of our preparedness for Ebola and other haemorrhagic disease, we actively practice the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including
access to and from the ambulance bay using this equipment.“ The case follows the testing of two children suspected of carrying Ebola at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital in February. Both were cleared. The virus has killed more than 8500 victims across western Africa, including 500 health care workers. Victorian health department spokesperson Bram Alexander said the state had a plan to deal with Ebola. “I can tell you with all honesty that

Victoria remains Ebola-free and we have very robust processes in place to manage anyone who might be returning from those areas showing signs or symptoms of Ebola infection.” Mr Alexander could not say whether other suspected Ebola cases had been treated in Victoria. “There may have been others but they would have been dealt with in the appropriate way but we don’t flag cases. The thing is there are processes we’ve got at airports and elsewhere that kick into place and appropriate action is taken.”

By NOEL MURPHY A GEELONG man will face court next month over the bizarre alleged theft of 17 coffins from a Melbourne warehouse earlier this year. “You could say the man was pretty stiff,” Inspector Tony Long of Maribyrnong Police said. “However, the media coverage of the original incident generated a huge amount of information from the public, none from the spirit world however, which saw the curtain come down on this undertaking. “He didn’t stand a ghost of a chance, really.”

HOW MANY contract tree-fellers does it take to lop the palms in Moorabool St? Not as many as you would expect. There they were early this week, just two council contractors lopping off dead branches with a chainsaw while trying to keep curious bus stop patrons clear as the fronds fell in swathes. They had a couple of witch’s hats, which offered little in the way of a barrier, although no one was taken out by a falling branch, as far as Double Take could ascertain at least. By Wednesday a third man was on the big job – still a small outfit compared to the usual crowd that turns out when City Hall takes on a similar challenge. And not an “observer“ to be seen!
Police charged the 32-year-old with handling stolen goods. He has been bailed to appear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court. Police arrested him at Clifton Springs. The coffins, worth several thousand dollars each, were allegedly stolen from a warehouse in west-suburban Braybrook. They belonged to a funeral parlour that had needed to offload them into storage, according to earlier reports. Police described the theft as bizarre. They were unaware of any
likely black or second-hand market for the coffins. “To date, seven of the stolen coffins have been recovered. However, with plenty of leads still to follow up, it’s expected there’ll be more arrests and more coffins located,” Insp Long said. “Our investigators will not rest until they’ve nailed the lid shut on this grave caper.” Police urged anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to lodge a confidential report at crimestoppersvic.com.au.

ARTS PATRONS will be happy to know Lorne Sculpture Biennale will return in 2016. The event will run on 12 March and 3 April to “help build a reflective, creative and intuitive society”, organisers announced this week. Judging by the pair of 2014 entries pictured, intuition will be essential indeed to work out just what some of the sculptures are on about. The first, Louise Palmer’s The Wild Card, featuring inverted polar bear, won the trail sculpture category. The second appears to be Tony Yap’s live-action interpretation of a Labrador’s day at the beach. We look forward – and possibly upside down – to 2016!

Mum discovers slashed bodies of son, mate
In brief
Deaths mystify police By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE VIOLENT deaths of two men at Whittington have baffled homicide squad detectives. The pair, friends who lived together in a Thatcher St house, died from fatal stab wounds. The mother of one of the men discovered their bodies on Wednesday morning. Police said the pair sustained “significant” knife wounds to their hands, arms and necks. Homicide Squad Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Sol Solomon said police were keeping an open mind on the circumstances of the deaths. No third party appeared to be involved, he said. “At this time it’s way too early to be speculating as to whether there was a third party involved. We have no information to say that is a fact.” Det Solomon said police were investigating both deaths as potential homicides until they could determine exactly what happened.
BAFFLED: Police on the scene of the deaths at Whittington. Picture: REG RYAN Police had not yet ruled out murder-suicide, he said. “Until we have a thorough crime scene investiga-
tion and a post-mortem examination, which will be done later, to know exactly what the cause of death is, or whether there was a fight or some form of physical interaction between the two males, it’s just way too soon.” The bodies of the two men, aged 23 and 30, were discovered just before 10.30am in a bedroom at the rear of the property. Earlier reports said neighbours heard screams before a woman was seen running from a house. Det Solomon said the mother who discovered the grisly scene was “not doing well”. The incident had also shaken neighbours but they had no reason for fear or alarm that a murderer might be on the loose in the area, he said. Det Solomon appealed for public assistance to help explain the mystery deaths. “If there’s anybody out there in the public who knows anything about these two gentlemen or what may have happened at this particular premises they can contact Crime Stoppers.”
Boaties’ knockout POLICE have discovered three people unconscious on a boat circling out of control half a kilometre off St Leonards. Police believe the two men and a woman, who were taken to hospital, might have been victims of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Builder appointed MELBOURNE-based Monaco Hickey will redevelop Barwon Water’s new headquarters in central Geelong, the water authority has announced. Barwon Water said the project, which has been costed at $25 million, would create up to 100 construction jobs in a “boost for the regional economy”.
Health closure A YEAR-LONG closure of Drysdale Community Health Centre will force residents to leave town for some medical services, its operator has warned. Bellarine Community Health said the centre would temporarily close from June for a “major refurbishment and extension”, with patients advised to visit clinics at Portarlington and Pont Lonsdale during the closure.
Guns stolen TWO ANTIQUE guns stolen from Newcomb’s Amazing Mill Markets could be used for criminal activities, police fear. Investigators are studying surveillance images to identify who broke into a display cabinet to steal the two 1860s rifles on Sunday night.
Anzac lighting GEELONG’S City Hall will light up with a special Anzacs tribute this month, Mayor Darryn Lyons has announced. He said an “incredibly powerful lighting show” would emblazon the building with Anzac imagery nightly from 17 April to 3 May.
Easter lock-up A POLICE warning for householders to lock up over Easter follows a spate of burglaries along the Surf Coast. Police said homes left unattended over the Easter long weekend were targets for criminals, with coastal towns like Anglesea recently recording increased rates of burglary.

‘Australian-first’ project restores decimated mussel, oyster reefs
Spit spat bring back shellfish By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
IN THE BAG: The Nature Conservancy’s Dr Chris Gillies with a bag of oysters on scallop shells for deployment. Picture: INGA FEITSMA 137091
CORIO Bay’s “functionally extinct” oyster reefs and mussel beds are being rebuilt in an Australian-first shellfish restoration project. Wilson’s Spit reef, in the bay’s outer-harbour, is one of three sites under restoration as part of the $270,000 project. The project uses scallop shells from Mantzaris Fisheries to give spat, or baby oysters and mussels, a base on which to grow until they begin forming their own beds and reefs. Queenscliff’s Victorian Shellfish Hatchery is producting the project’s spat. Experts estimate up to 90 per cent of a previously expansive shellfish population in Corio and Port Phillip bays has been decimated by a combination of overfishing, disease, heavy metal pollution and dredging. The project is a partnership between The Nature Conservancy, Fisheries Victoria and Albert Park Yachting and Angling Club. Fisheries Victoria marine scientist Dr Paul Hamer, based at the Queenscliff Marine Science Institute, said the project had just seeded Wilsons Spit reef with oyster spat. “This project will never return the bay to what it was but it will work on local scales,” Dr Hamer said. “If we can create lots of little local repair jobs it will make a big difference to the health of the bay. “At the moment we’re trying to come up with the best recipe to do it and then we can work out how to do larger reefs. “Wilsons Spit was a big oyster reef until even 20 or 30 years ago but suffered a severe impact from disease.” Dr Hamer said the project could spread to other areas up and down the south-east coast where shellfish stocks had been similarly depleted. The Nature Conservancy marine manager Dr Chris Gillies said the project was an example of people giving nature a helping hand. “Our organisation has done 80 shellfish restoration projects around the world, so we can provide an international scientific context,” Dr Gillies said. “Habitats like shellfish reefs are great habitats for providing fish with nursery grounds and they help to protect our shorelines.

BEDDED DOWN: One of the shellfish reef limestone base plots. Picture: DR CHRIS GILLIES “Shellfish are great at filtering the water to prevent harmful algal blooms. An adult oyster may filter 100 litres of water a day and a few mussels likewise. “Oyster reefs and mussel beds provide structural habitat and hard substrate for myriad other marine life to live in and on.” Dr Gillies said the project hoped to eventually create smaller partnerships with community groups such as fishing and yacht clubs and schools. “Through these partnerships they could build their own little reefs everywhere and eventually have a connected reef system throughout the bay.”

CONCERN: Keith Fagg.
PRIORITY: Darryn Lyons.
Council’s cash to city facades COUNCIL cash is pouring back into central Geelong months after the axing of a scheme to fund community projects in the suburbs. In the latest package for the city centre, Mayor Darryn Lyons has announced a new Central Geelong Major Heritage Fund to help owners restore historic buildings. The fund will offer dollar-fordollar grants for the restoration of heritage-listed facades. “Beautifying the CBD has been one of my priorities since coming into office,” Cr Lyons said. “I’m on a mission to get building owners to improve the appearance of their buildings and this fund can help them do that. “We have some amazing heritage buildings in our city centre and I would love these to be brought back to their former glory. “I know that these works can
be costly but the grants should provide a great incentive to building owners.” Deputy mayor Michelle Heagney said restoration works were “often low“ on the agenda of city building owners. But the grants would help them pay for improvements to features such as awnings, balconies and paintwork, she said. Cr Heagney hoped building owners would utilise the fund to help “bring some pride back into the heart of our city“. Applications for grants closed 15 May, she said. The new fund builds on a council commitment of more than $4 million to develop a “green spine” along Malop St. Upgrading central Geelong regularly rates among the top priorities in surveys of residents. The injection of ratepayers’ cash into the city centre follows the demise of a scheme that gave councillors $600,000 a year each
for projects in their own wards, such as playground and sports facility upgrades. The scheme, worth $7 million a year, was set up a decade ago under then-mayor Shane Dowling amid complaints council was spending too much on the city centre, to the detriment of the suburbs. The previous state government launched an investigation into the scheme after Geelong’s first directly elected mayor, Keith Fagg, quit 10 months into the job and raised concerns about the scheme’s governance. Councillors told the Independent that Mr Fagg as mayor had wanted the scheme’s annual $7 million redirected to the city centre. Acting mayor Bruce Harwood backed the scheme but council axed it before completion of the investigation, which cleared councillors of any wrongdoing in the allocation of grants.

Intern death in ‘perfect storm’ By NOEL MURPHY THE SUICIDE of a medical intern at Geelong hospital has highlighted concerns about workplace harassment and the mental health of medical students, doctors in training and health care professionals, according to the Medical Journal of Australia. The intern was one week into an internship at Barwon Health’s University Hospital Geelong, the journal reported. Together with three other sudden deaths, of psychiatry registrars at Melbourne hospitals, the tragedies were la-
belled “a perfect storm that’s been a long time coming”. Sydney University’s Dr Kimberley Ivory told the journal a recent analysis found that 59 per cent of medical trainees had “experienced at least one form of harassment or discrimination during their training”. “Medical education functions by teaching through modelling,” Dr Ivory said. “Students see a behaviour modelled by a successful older doctor and copy that behaviour; adopting and perpetuating bullying, teaching by humiliation
and, in extreme cases, sexual harassment. “Medical culture is at the core of this issue. That culture is entrenched by modelling. “There are doctors who shame doctors. And there is a stigma within the wider community as well, that doctors should be infallible.” Dr Ivory said the stigma was a “definite barrier“ stopping doctors with mental health issues from accessing support. “And that’s particularly true of young doctors in their training years because of the fear that it will somehow be detrimental to their progression.”
Dr Ivory blamed an “institutional culture” as “the root cause of this persistent, pervasive and destructive problem”. But she hoped the problems would fail to discourage prospective medical students from their chosen career path. Barwon Health told the Independent the health and well-being of its staff was “of utmost important to us”. “Barwon Health has a comprehensive staff care service in place that includes programs specifically designed to assist staff and trainees to build resilience and includes a program tailored specifically for doctors,” spokesperson Kate Bibby said.
“These services have extended hours for ease of accessibility, meeting the needs of our many shift workers. “Barwon Health expects individuals to exhibit appropriate behaviours in the workplace, and ensure our work environment is free from all forms of behaviour that are unacceptable (including bullying, harassment and discrimination). “There is a well-documented process in place for managing complaints and employees are encouraged to report inappropriate behaviour for investigation and action.” Anyone with personal issues can phone Lifeline on 13 11 14.
Naomi’s garden secrets revealed to the public this weekend ‘P-Tech’ in By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN state talks AUSTRALIA is known as the dry continent, with some parts drier than others. But it hasn’t stopped Naomi Benney from establishing an arid garden beauty at Meredith. Despite the challenging conditions on her hilltop property, Southernby Park, Ms Benney has created a stunning garden of succulents, agaves and other drought-tolerant species. “I soon found out that there was no point in fighting nature, so I just did what I could with what nature allowed,” she explained. Ms Benney found the right selection of plants to cope with poor soil on a droughtprone site with limited water resources to create her cottage-style garden filled with rustic collector’s pieces. Made of a series of themed and colourcoded sections, Ms Benney only recently completed the most recent addition to the garden. Southernby Park, at 599 Slate Quarry Rd, will welcome visitors as part of an Open Gardens Australia scheme from 10am to 4.30pm Saturday and Sunday. Entry for adults will cost $8, with children admitted free.

GEELONG will be the first recipient of a Pathways in Technology Early College High (PTech) School, Prime Minister Tony Abbott confirmed while visiting the region this week. The Independent reported last October that Geelong would host Australia’s first PTech, involving big business and industry in the delivery of the school’s curriculum. The P-Tech program has been allocated $500,000 in seed funding. Mr Abbott said he was working with State Government and its education department as the manager of public schools in Victoria. “My understanding is that those discussions are going well and we’ll have an announcement to make in the not too distant future. “And, yes, the first of the PTech schools will be here in the Geelong area.”

Drysdale seeks ‘regeneration’ would take that concept even further.” VicRoads will this month seek residents’ input on potential improvements to High St as part of community consultations over the proposed bypass. VicRoads will host drop-in consultation sessions in April, displaying latest plans and options for the bypass. Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville said the $109 million project would reduce congestion and noise while increasing safety and parking on High St.
The proposal should be considered once a proposed Drysdale bypass had reduced the street’s through-traffic, he said. “The association believes it would create a more-welcoming environment for both vehicles and pedestrians, creating a compatible space for both. “The nearest we have to it at the moment is the Ocean Grove retail precinct where cars move through slowly and there are a number of areas where pedestrians can cross safely. “But the vision we have for High St
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A BOLD community proposal seeks the “regeneration” of Drysdale’s main street. Drysdale Clifton Springs Community Association wants High St between its two town-centre roundabouts converted into a shared space for cars, pedestrians and cycles. The association modelled its plan on a dramatic change to the formerly trafficsnarled UK village of Poynton, said secretary Neil McGuiness.
The bypass would provide an alternative, more-efficient route for trucks, keeping more of them out of the town’s centre . Ms Neville said VicRoads’ engineers were investigating potential impacts on the environment and completing a range of other studies on cultural heritage, social, economic, land use planning, ecology and traffic impacts. “These community consultation sessions are the first of many opportunities for residents to see the latest plans and
options, speak directly with VicRoads experts and provide real input into the features of the bypass. I urge locals to provide their feedback including improvements to High St and intersections into and around the town to ensure the project delivers what our community needs.” VicRoads will run the consultation sessions from 3pm 15 April at Springdale Neighbourhood House and 3.30pm 22 April at Portarlington Neighbourhood House.
Police raid’s PM visits Geelong to announce jobs system shake-up By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN murder link By NOEL MURPHY A MAN will be charged with minor offences following a police raid on an Armstrong Creek house last weekend. Homicide Squad police raided the Tennyson Cls house as part of ongoing investigations into the suspected murder of Leopold’s Paul Kingsbury. The raid discovered chemicals unrelated to drugs or the suspected murder, Detective Senior Sergeant Boris Buick told the Independent. “The raid was executed in relation to the furtherance of the investigation of the suspected murder of Paul Kingsbury. “No one has been charged with murder but some things were found that will lead to charges but nothing to do with murder as such and we’re still ongoing with that investigation. “We know who took him to be killed and we know who killed him but we need someone to come forward with evidence.” Police have so far charged two men with false imprisonment and kidnapping in connection with the disappearance of Mr Kingsbury, who was last seen at Moolap on 6 July.

tive system is the four-week outcome payment.” Mr Abbott, a former Howard Government employment minister, said Work for the Dole would hold a “renewed place” in the new system. “We’re working towards a situation where if you’re longterm unemployed and you’re under 50 you’ll have to do a form of Work for the Dole.” Mr Abbott said the program would also assist Geelong people who lost their jobs at Alcoa or who were facing unemployment when Ford ceased manufacturing. “Geelong is resilient and it has the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the National Disability Insurance Agency, Deakin and some state agencies are relocating to Geelong,” he said. The new system starts on 1 July. Barwon region providers will be Advanced Personnel Management, MatchWorks, St Laurence Community Services, Staffing Solutions, Workskil Australia, RMIT University and NetGain.
PRIME Minister Tony Abbott made a surprise visit to Geelong this week to launch a national $5 billion jobs scheme. Jobactive is the latest attempt to shorten the dole queues following the Howard Government-era Job Network and the Labor’s Job Services Australia. “It’s not just a new name but a new system,” Mr Abbott told a gathering at Simonds Stadium’s Deakin Cats Community Centre. “Jobactive will focus on outcomes, not training for training’s sake.” Mr Abbott said a major change to the system included payments to job agencies for jobs as short as four weeks. “We know there are a lot of short-term jobs available, particularly in regional Australia, there are jobs that are seasonal and these are often the start of someone’s renewed connection with the labour market. “That’s why an important innovation in this new jobac-

Dry March hits region MARCH finished with disappointing rain totals around the Geelong district, further reducing levels in the region’s water storages. Totals varied from 30 to 70 per cent of average March rain, although parts of the Otway and Moorabool catchments recorded results were better than normal. Mt Sabine, at the head of the Barwon catchment, recorded 117mm, which was well-above average. Otherwise the Bellarine Peninsula and Golden Plains Shire were below normal expectations. The Geelong urban area received around 20mm, which was only 70 per cent of the rain normally received in March. In recent years Geelong’s March rain has shown a decline and it is now the driest month of the year. But this has been balanced by increases in winter and spring. Nevertheless the Bureau of Meteorology has

weather Lindsay Smail
predicted a 65 per cent likelihood of a wetter-thanaverage late autumn this year - the highest odds for a long time. Barwon Water reported the catchments had fallen to about 61 per cent of capacity this week, close to normal for this time of year. March was cooler than normal. Average daily minimums were 11.5C compared to the 30-year average of 12.3C. The average maximum was right on the average at 23.3C.
However, the mean temperature was therefore 17.4C, which was .4 C lower than average. March included two days over 30C, with the highest, 34C, recorded on 19 March usually averages four days over 30C. The warmest overnight temperature was 16.9C on 17-18 March and the lowest minimum was 7.1C on 20-21. All these figures are very close to the long-term averages for March. The Bureau of Meteorology outlook for the rest of autumn is for warmer-than-average temperatures. As for the month’s other notable weather features, three days of strong wind gusts were recorded on 5, 25 and 26 March. The strongest gust was 69km/h. No severe storms were recorded and the region had only one thunder day, on 19 March.

All opinion, no proof
IT IS with sadness I report the closure of a local business, Belmont Village Meats, at Belmont Village Shopping Centre. The suddenness of its closure for unspecified reasons, took all its clients by surprise. This business had served the community with distinction over many years. Its product was of the highest standard and the business had a strong and loyal support base. I wish its former owners and their hard-working staff all the best for the future and thank them for their service. Michael J Gamble Belmont
IT’S HARD to understand why people like Gavin Brown (Letters, 27 March) continually use meaningless jargon and nonsensical arguments when answering sceptics. What Mr Brown ought to realise is that each time a global warming theorist like himself calls for the silencing of the alternative science to climate change they effectively admit they have no answers to the claims made by sceptics. In addition, they are, by implication, discrediting their own cause by insisting Australia turns into some kind of quasi-North Korea where people are told what to think. Freedom of debate is absolutely crucial to any democracy, for without it there is no democracy. Also, it might be helpful for Mr Brown to give scientific proof or references when answering sceptics rather than just express an opinion. So far all global warming theorists have done is say they disagree – no surprises there – but have not offered any real proof for their counter claims. It’s time they did. Alan Barron Grovedale
Pioneering project I AM PLEASED to see that works have commenced on stage two of the upgrade of Pioneer Rd, Grovedale. This important $12.5m upgrade was funded in the 2014/2015 state budget by the previous coalition government. The upgrade will reduce congestion for the growing community and allow for safer access at the intersection of Pioneer Rd and Meadowvale Dve. The improvements to Pioneer Rd will provide for 350 metres of divided road with two traffic lanes and cycle lanes in each direction and a duplicated bridge over Waurn Ponds Creek. New traffic signals at the intersection of Pioneer Rd and Meadowvale Dve will replace the roundabout. Andrew Katos MP Member for South Barwon
Editor should cut fringe IS THE editor of the Independent clear about the purpose of letters to the editor? I normally expect thoughtful, factually-based arguments, not bizarre explanations for our climate and weather, related to “a rocking motion in our relationship to the Sun, producing fluctuations in our seasons and the normal seasonal balance“ (Letters, 27 March). Unfortunately, many of the letter-writers just show that a number of people in the Geelong region dwell in the fringes of reality. Heather D’Cruz Geelong West

Warming ‘pause’ supported IN THE 13 March edition of the Independent I stated there had been no global warming for 15 to 18 years and that even NASA acknowledged this. In the 27 March edition Gavin Brown said I was cherry-picking dates. However, the warming pause is not only acknowledged by NASA, but the International Panel on Climate Change, the UK meteorological office and the majority of the world’s climate organisations. The planet warmed about .3C from about 1978 to 1998, which warmists claimed was undisputable evidence of man-made global warming. But then it stopped and warmists were in denial for about a decade or so, desperately hoping for the warming to resume, even renaming ‘global warming’ to ‘climate change’. Since then there have been over 60 published scientific theories trying to account for the so-called missing heat, including a suggestion it suddenly switched from the atmosphere to the oceans in 1998 but will pop out again one day. Taylor’s made stripped back
HE’S BACK: Taylor Henderson returns to performing with new songs - and dad Cam in Geelong this month.
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN IT ALWAYS feels a bit different when a performer returns to their home town to put on a show but Taylor Henderson believes he has hit upon the right approach. He has chosen to present a more-intimate, stripped back and acoustic set for his Geelong show on 21 April at The Courthouse. “This is the only show in the whole tour that’s stripped back,” Henderson said. “I wanted to make it more of a retrospective, back to when it all began, just like sitting together in the lounge room with a guitar and singing a few songs. “I really want to let people know how the songs were written originally, where it’s just about the voice and a guitar or piano.” Playing his home town gives Henderson a chance to reconnect with fans that supported him and his dad, Cam, through the music reality television appearances on X Factor and Australia’s Got Talent. In fact, Cam is dragging out his guitar and joining his son on stage in Geelong, the first time they have performed together in five years. “We might have to find a forklift to bring him in – he’s getting on a bit, the old fella,” Henderson joked. “It will be great to bust out a couple of old ones with dad.” But despite the jocularity, Henderson said he
was looking forward to his Geelong gig. “I can’t wait but I have to because it’s near the end of the tour, and I’ll be off to the UK right afterwards to do some more work with top producers and writers.” It’s an opportunity Henderson has been working towards for some time, writing a swag of new material in preparation for a new album. Such is his trust in Geelong audiences that he will expose some new, edgier material as part of his song-writing and story-telling journey since his early success. “I want to be able to take a risk in my music instead of following the crowd. I guess its bridging between what I’m known for and what I want to become.” Henderson said he was looking forward to his hometown audience’s feedback. “It’s a chance to come and hear it first and be a part of the development. I love getting the feedback on songs and still use that in their development.” Twenty-three year old Henderson has enjoyed national fame since his reality TV appearances. The Ceres performer released a number-one self-titled album in 2013, which included charttopping single Borrow My Heart . He backed it up with number-one second album Burnt Letters last year and top-five single When You Were Mine. Henderson said tickets and tour information were available from his website, taylorhendersonofficial.com.

Lions chasing kids, families BELMONT Lions Sports Club is looking for young footballers keen to lace up and get out on the field for the 2015 season. And new players will have plenty of opportunities for a kick with the Lions. “Don’t be a benchwarmer with the bigger clubs, every kid gets a run at Belmont,” says Brendan Smith, the club’s junior football coordinator. “We also offer a great club, great mates and one of the cheapest memberships around.” Belmont is anxious to boost
its junior ranks as kids steer away from sport or head off to clubs where they believe they might be more successful, Brendan says. “But the fact is, a lot of those kids looking elsewhere won’t get much of a run. “They’ll find themselves frustrated when they should instead be getting out there and having fun, keeping fit and striking up strong friendships - all the things that football is good for.” Belmont Lions wants youngsters for Auskick and under 10s, 12s, 14s and 16s.
The club’s fee structure, which includs a free club hoodie, is $65 for Auskick, $110 for under-10s and 12s and $135 for under-14s and 16s. “Every family member and player involved is welcome, highly valued and given a fair go,” Brendan says. “We’d also welcome any parents interested in being involved in match-day support roles. “Belmont’s a great club and this really is a good opportunity.” Brendan’s happy to field enquiries on 0430 194 933 or brendan448@hotmail.com.

Beat foot, leg issues THE ROLE of feet in mobility and balance make them the basis for most physical activities, so it’s no wonder problems and pain are common. But few people realise that feet can affect and cause problems elsewhere, such as in ankles, knees, hips and backs. Bad foot posture can also pull the body out of alignment, so any pain should not be ignored. Untreated problems almost always worsen but the solution is often simple with the correct diagnosis and treatment. Foot & Leg Pain Clinics musculoskeletal podiatrist Dr David Kavanagh says people often en-
dure painful conditions for far too long. “Most conditions can be easily overcome thanks to the latest medical research and treatments. Even patients who’ve been told there’s no solution or that surgery and/or medications are their only options can now be treated with great success. “With the right diagnosis and treatment from an experienced practitioner who addresses the cause of the problem and not just the symptoms you can achieve successful long-term outcomes.” Foot & Leg Pain Clinics Belmont can help with: heel or arch pain; plantar fasciitis; ankle, shin

Simple check ‘can save life’
Plastic surgeon Ian Holten. cent of skin cancers can be successfully treated if detected early. But detection can be difficult, with skin cancers rarely felt and sometimes occurring on parts of
the body not usually exposed to the Sun. Mr Holten says the answer is to book an annual skin check. “A skin check is easy and simple and takes 20 minutes. It’s just one of those things you need to do.” Mr Holten has trained Australian Skin Face Body’s team of doctors to carry out the checks. “A skin check with an experienced GP will cost only $30 after the Medicare rebate and it could save your life,” he says. Located at 50 Western Beach Rd, Geelong, his plastic surgery, skin and laser clinic has ample car parking at the rear. “No referral is necessary, simply make an appointment by phoning 5221 8444.”

AUSTRALIAN Institute of Health and Welfare statistics show Australia faces a major health crisis, with three out of five people either overweight or obese. Both present serious health consequences, such as increased risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. But the real tragedy is that these complications are preventable. The team at The Firm Slimming & Health Clinic has over 20 years’ experience helping people lose weight, tone muscles and reduce the appearance of cellulite for over 20 years. Electrotherapy plays a crucial part in the program, helping firm and tone muscles to reshape the body. The non-invasive treatment is excellent for centimetre loss and muscle toning. It’s also a safe, painless alternative to surgery or drugs, achieving rapid results with no recovery time needed. Electrotherapy is combined with an infrared treatment and customised eating plans to ensure optimum weight loss that’s effective, fast and healthy. Treatment takes place in private individual cubicles, with pads strategically placed on target areas for pulses from the machine’s advanced computerised program to contract and re-

AT LEAST two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by 70 – one of the worst rates in the world. Leading Geelong plastic surgeon Ian Holten says each exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV) changes the structure of skin cells, eventually leading to permanent damage. “The Sun is the best natural source of vitamin D but too much exposure causes sunburn, premature ageing and damage that could lead to melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer,” he says. “Skin cancer and mole checks and talking to an expert about your level of risk and advice on early detection is a good idea.” Mr Hotlen says over 95 per

By ALISTAIR KENNEDY KIA RIO is the smallest model in the Korean carmaker’s Australian range and has been a steady seller over the years, especially following its 2011 styling transformation. The latest version was launched in 2012 and given regular updates, the most recent of which was in January 2015 with some minor styling changes, suspension tweaks and revised variant names. Working on the “if it ain’t broke…” philosophy changes to the outward appearance of the new Rio are barely noticeable and it remains a neat and attractive little vehicle. For the record there are new bumpers, front and rear, new grille pattern and metallic look headlamps. Inside, the centre instrument fascia of the dashboard has been glossed up and the audio unit redesigned. Australian Kias have previously been available in four-door sedan format but are now exclusively three or five-door hatchbacks with no return of the four-door likely in the immediate future. For a car of its size interior space in the Rio is quite impressive. Entry and exit into the front seats is relatively easy even for larger occupants, though there’s a bit more bending required to access the rear seats. Once inside there’s good headroom and acceptable legroom albeit with a bit of co-operation needed between taller front and/or rear occupants. Lateral space in the rear is ok for two adults but not for a third. Three mid-sized children will just about fit. Controls are large and well-positioned with three large dials directly in front of the driver displaying speed, revs and fuel status. The steering wheel has both telescopic and tilt adjustment as well as audio and cruise control buttons. The boot isn’t especially long but is deep enough for a couple of relatively large suitcases with the space-saver spare wheel below the boot floor. There are small storage spaces on either side of the boot wall and a full-length cargo blind. Two naturally-aspirated petrol engines are offered, a 1.4-litre petrol engine producing 79 kW of power at 6300 rpm and 135 Nm of torque at 4200 revs, and 1.6-litre petrol with 103 kW at 6300 rpm and 167 Nm at 4850 rpm. The 1.4 can be mated to either a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic, 1.6 gets a more modern six-speed auto. The Rio model range for 2015 has been changed with three equipment levels; S, S Premium and Si. The S is available with either three or five doors and gets the 1.4-litre engine. The S Premium also gets the smaller engine but is a five-door only as is the Si but with the extra power of the 1.6-litre unit. The 1.4-litre models comes with 15-inch alloy wheels; the 1.6 uses 16-inchers. The range will be topped up with two additional models, Sport and SLi, which are due to arrive here around May 2015. Standard in all models are six airbags; ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist; hill start assist; high-mounted rear stop light; two IsoFix child seat sockets; and impactsensing auto door unlocking. The S Premier and Si also get front foglamps. Information display is restricted to a small red
and black screen on the centre of the dashboard which, despite its size, is easy to read and informative. Bluetooth pairing is simple and logical and, unlike other cars where the USB and Auxiliary sockets are hidden away at the bottom of the centre storage bin, they are prominent and easily accessible at the lower end of the dashboard. Directly below them is a small tray which is clearly designed to hold a modern smartphone thus eliminating the need for cables to be draped around the front console, potentially even snagging the gear lever. An added feature with the audio system is speed dependent volume control which is standard in all models. Our test car was the 1.6-litre Rio Si automatic in a bad-boy Aurora Black that added an element of street cred that’s likely to appeal particularly to young male buyers. In the urban environment for which it’s designed Kia Rio is perfectly capable. Even on the 50-kilometre motorway section of our test course it buzzed along nicely although naturally without the cruising finesse of a larger car. Onto the rural backroads handling was wellcontrolled and sharp for a car in this class although the ride may be a tad on the firm side for those who prefer comfort over driving feel. The suspension is well sorted and brakes are on the sharp side. Drivers of manual Rios with limited confidence will no doubt appreciate the hill hold feature. In a business that throws up names such as the “BMW X3 xDrive 35i Edition Exclusive” it’s refreshing to be able to review a car with a name like Kia Rio Si which rolls easily off the tongue. With the 2014 Soccer World Cup behind us and the 2016 Olympic Games ahead, both of which centred on the Brazilian city, Kia has been getting and will continue to get plenty of free publicity for this well-equipped, cute and affordable hatchback. Kia’s recent decision to extend its standard warranty to seven years and unlimited kilometres adds even more value to the already well-priced Rio. Model range: Rio S 1.4-litre three-door hatchback: $15,990 (manual), $17,990 (automatic) Rio S 1.4-litre five-door hatch: $16,990 (manual), $18,990 (automatic) Rio S Premium 1.4-litre five-door hatch: $17,690 (manual), $19,690 (automatic) Rio Si 1.6-litre five-door hatch: $21,490 (automatic)

Truck Car Rentals has all types of vehicles for hire.
Big range of vehicles for any purpose at Truck Car WHETHER it’s for business or pleasure, Truck Car Rentals has transport requirements covered. Truck Car Rentals has an extensive range of vehicles to suit a variety of requirements, owner Graeme says. “Being a small local operation, our prices are more competitive than bigger companies. “Plus, we can offer a high level of customer service because we know the local needs.” Truck Car Rentals recently expanded its fleet to include 46 seater buses, adding to its 12 and 22 seaters. “A lot of schools around Geelong use our services when they need extra buses,” Graeme says. “We have a lot of local clubs and groups hire the smaller buses as well as families for get-togethers or outings.” Truck Car Rentals has several enclosed trucks suitable for do-it-yourself removals, requiring only a car licence. A range of light commercials and vans, tray trucks, cars and single-axle trailers for the weekend handyman are also available. “Our rates are lower during the week so that adds flexibility to small business vehicle requirements,” Graeme says. Truck Car Rentals also has everything up to prime movers and trailers, great for logistics businesses trying to cope with extra demand. “If your vehicle is in for a service or repairs, Truck Car Rentals has the answer. “Whatever your needs, we can assist in finding the right vehicle for the job.” Truck Car Rentals is at 215 Station St, Corio, phone 5275 8288 or visit truckcarrentals.com.au.

Competitors rip with lighter line
Cats big on options at dawn of a new season By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG coach Chris Scott likes to have options. He had some last year but always wanted more. So 2015 should be considered option year; a season in which the Cats have plenty of flexibility. Scott got what he wanted with the recruitment of Mitch Clark and Rhys Stanley, two athletic big men who can hold down a key position or roam the ground in the ruck. While perhaps not quite up to the running standard of Mark Blicavs, Clark and Stanley are more-developed footballers who provide match-up difficulties for opponents. That’s not to say that tall utility
Blicavs is out of a job – it just extends the number of options Scott has from week to week. Ageing stars Jimmy Bartel and James Kelly have played mainly forward and back respectively in the past two seasons but their versatility will be utilised to the maximum this season if the NAB Challenge is any guide. Ditto Steve Johnson. The Cats under Scott have always warmed to an option-style game, with defenders Harry Taylor and Andrew Mackie keen to drift forward and put their names on the scoreboard. Doing something the opposition doesn’t expect and which causes them to reshuffle is now a serious tactic in the AFL.
Geelong has been on the receiving end of it often enough – the 2008 grand final still the most glaring example. Where keeping players in regular roles and sticking to routines was once the accepted wisdom, horses for courses is becoming the way more teams try to set up. The option game has been at the heart of many lively discussions in America’s National Football League, from which AFL coaches as well as management have increasingly sought inspiration. It means AFL will become a more coach-driven game, just like the NFL where all the players do is execute instead of taking decision-making upon themselves out on the ground.
Of course, NFL games are almost entirely set plays instead of the fastflowing Aussie rules style of play, so set pieces do not translate as well. But using the flexibility offered by athletic multi-talented players allows coaches to try to create situations to the team’s advantage. And teams still need players to show skills, desire and effort, especially to overcome the lapses for which Geelong now has a reputation. The real question will be how Geelong’s coaching staff makes use of the variety on offer, starting with team selection and making changes on the fly to counter the opposition’s chess moves. It will be an interesting season.
ANGLERS contested the annual King of the Rip last weekend, wielding IGFA-rated light lines from the Barwon River estuary to Swan Bay. The impressive catches included Jason Hockey’s 3.46kg elephant fish and Keith Chapman’s 4.9kg gummy shark. Fishing World Geelong’s Michael Moore went out on Saturday night in search of whiting on the grass beds to the left of Queenscliff Harbour. Using tenderised freshly caught squid, he was soon into a frantic session that finished with 14 whiting from 40cm to 43cm. Daniel Baden and I fished glassy conditions off Barwon Heads on Sunday but the kingfish were elusive. Near Ocean Grove we found a massive school of Australian salmon cruising just under the surface and boated some exceptional fish around 3kg on metal lures fitted with single hooks. Daniel tried again with wife Lisa on Monday, enjoying similar results in mostly the same area. Indented Head held good numbers of squid to 1kg in 4m to 6m over reefy ground. Anglers reported better numbers of squid when the water was clear and the wind light enough for a slow drift. Other anglers drifted out wide in the deeper water for catches of flathead and pinkie snapper on bluebait. Heading down the Western District last week, I fished the Curdies River. Bream of 30cm to 35cm were present in good numbers and willing to take Z-Man grubs or Cranka Crabs cast hard against the banks. Port Fairy had southern bluefin tuna holding in close to shore and taking stick bait lures worked through schools of surface-feeding fish. Trolling smaller skirted lures also worked but most anglers found that casting stick baits gave the biggest adrenaline rush. Hugh Hanson took nephew Noah down to Lethbridge Lake to spin for redfin with Tassie Devils. Noah soon caught his first redfin, a 35cm fish, along with another five for the day. Darryl Luttrell ventured up to Moorabool Reservoir where he banked a beastly redfin of 44.5cm on a Z-Man grub in the Motor Oil colour. He noted that the lake had high amounts of what appeared to be algae on the surface. Heading a little further out of town, Ross Threllfall put some time in on the Ovens River. Casting Old Mate lures, Ross boated a personal-best Murray cod of 1 metre in length. He mentioned that the cod took him by surprise when it engulfed his lure right next to the boat. The Easter break should present a few worthwhile angling options. Whiting fishing should be almost at its best, especially from Queenscliff through to St Leonards, while the Barwon River estuary should produce some huge elephant fish and bream on the run-in tide. Further afield, a world-class southern bluefin tuna fishery is on our doorstep, so a trip down to Port Fairy might be worth the drive.
Warriors face ‘in-form’ Port after consecutive losses By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong hopes to bounce back from consecutive 4-3 losses against in-form Port Melbourne in National Premier League action at Elcho Park on Saturday. Port Melbourne is coming off a resounding 4-0 win against Oakleigh, with Kamal Ibrahim the danger man on everyone’s lips. His scoring form and rampant attack at opponents has been a talking point in social media circles. The Warriors went into last weekend’s Pascoe Vale match missing regulars Vito Cichello, Nathan Long and Daniel Zilic. Pascoe Vale opened the scoring on 29 minutes with a neat finish from Jake Nakic, who earlier had a couple of near misses. One minute later it was league top scorer Robbie Zadworny who levelled proceedings when he ran onto a through-ball from the middle of the park to calmly chip the approaching keeper. After the break the Warriors had an opportunity
ON THE BALL: Mark Paleka tussles for the ball against a Pascoe Vale opponent. Picture: IVAN DUGANDZIC when Juso Julardzija was upended outside the area. Josh Pugh stepped up and drove low and hard into the bottom left corner past the Alex Pavlidis for a 2-1 lead.
It didn’t last, though, with Joseph Youseff heading in a delightful cross from close range within a minute from the restart after the Warriors lost possession easily on the right flank. Four minutes later Youseff headed home from the other side at the near post again, this time from a corner. North Geelong responded when Mark Paleka opening his 2015 account with a smart goal. Under pressure from the defender, he held his ground long enough to slot the ball under Pavlidis, levelling the scores at 3-3. However, it was Youseff’s day and he made the Warriors pay with another headed near-post finish from a corner with 10 minutes left on the clock. The Warriors were unable to respond in the dying minutes. With injuries affecting the squad and two exhilarating results, it will be interesting to see how Micky Colina approaches the Port Melbourne match and whether he adjusts the line-up and its attacking style.
METRE MADE: Ross Threllfall with his personal-best Murray cod.
