LET’S hope the Easter Bunny hopped by Hallam this weekend. Two-week-old Mitchell Simeone was probably too young to notice, but his sister Isabella, 20 months, was certainly looking foward to the delights of Easter as were mum and dad Natalie and Adrian. She didn’t see the arrest blowfor-blow having been directed to stay outside with some of her children. She believed Karam wasn’t treated fairly and her children saw “their daddy get attacked”. Sen Const Malek said she was concerned for the couple’s four children – also protected under the intervention order – due to Kalam’s drug issues and his partner’s support for him on the night and in court the next day. Karam told the court he had failed to appear at court on 25 March because he arrived on the wrong date and that his partner had told him the intervention order had expired. “She rang up and said I could spend some time with the kids,” he told the court. Magistrate Barry Schultz said the alleged violence could be looked at in “two ways” and was a matter for a contested hearing not a bail application. “What I have to determine is the simple matter of granting you bail, including protecting children from witnessing violence.” Karam was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court last Thursday.

T

including allegedly assaulting his brother and stealing a small amount of cannabis, Sen Const Malek said. The informant said Karam received a “minor torch injury” to the side of his head from one of the officers during the arrest. He was given first aid at the scene and was bandaged by a paramedic. Karam alleged in court that he was struck with a torch and punched multiple times “until a gash was spilling out with blood. “They were just beating me to a pulp.” Karam said he believed his cheekbone was fractured and shoulder dislocated during the arrest. His partner, while giving evidence in court on behalf of the accused’s bail application, said she’d believed Karam was allowed to come over and look after the children. “There were no drugs, no weapons. He was nagging at me. He was sitting on my couch refusing to leave. He wasn’t hurting me.” Karam had suffered drug issues in the past but had been “the best father he has been in his life” since visiting the home for the past five weeks, she said.

R

A FAMILY-violence victim has sided with her estranged husband, claiming in court that police used excessive force during his arrest. Toufiq Jabr Karam of Endeavour Hills was sporting marks to his face and a bump to his right temple as he failed to ‘show cause’ for bail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday. He was facing multiple charges including failing to appear on bail and breaching a family-violence intervention order. Police informant Senior Constable Jo Malek told the court that four police forcibly restrained the accused during a struggle after he swung an elbow backwards at an officer on 29 March. That night, Karam’s partner twice called triple-zero stating the “belligerent and verbally abusive” accused refused to leave her Lynbrook house, Sen Const Malek told the court. Karam had been barred from visiting the address under an intervention order since October. On that night there was a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear at court over charges

MORE than 60 south-east manufacturers are among the potential winners from a State Government plan for extra trains and fewer level crossings on the Dandenong rail corridor. The government announced last week that it would purchase 37 trains - with each of them carrying 20 per cent more passengers than current trains, be at least 50 per cent Australian-made and in service from 2018. A new train depot and maintenace facility will be built at Pakenham and nine grade separations completed between Dandenong and Caulfield. The government claims the project will boost capacity by up to 42 per cent on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines - more than 11,000 extra passengers during the morning peak. About $30 million will be paid to scrap a public-private project negotiated by the previous government for the rail corridor’s upgrade last year. South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance executive director Adrian Boden said the boost from 30 per cent to 50 per cent in Australian-made content for each train would benefit jobs. About 67 firms

Public transport users should benefit from more trains on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines. in the region are capable of supplying the new trains, he said. “There’s only a question mark as to the definition of the 50 per cent we think it should be 50 per cent of manufacturing content not (including) maintenance and design. “Manufacturing is still a staple part of the GDP of Victoria. “We’ve got a growing population and we’ve got to work to increase the number of jobs - being stable is

not good enough.” Public Transport Users’ Association spokesman Daniel Bowen said the upgrades would provide “a lot more capacity - bigger trains and more of them“. “We hope that the upgrades included in the Dandenong line will provide enough of a boost to capacity until high-capacity signalling can be rolled out.” He said there was “one omis-

sion” - the Cranbourne line would continue to be a bottleneck without plans for duplication. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams labelled the project as a “once-in-a-generation investment in better roads and better transport for Dandenong”. Opposition leader Matthew Guy defended the previous government’s plan for a public-private partnership project which was scrapped by its successor last week. “If the Coalition plan is so flawed, why is Daniel Andrews spending $30 million of taxpayers’ money on buying the blueprint? “Daniel Andrews can’t say what it will cost, doesn’t know how it will be funded and isn’t sure when the project will start or finish.” Greens south-east metropolitan MP Nina Springle said the government’s commitment to fixing the “dangerously overcrowded” lines was welcome but she was disappointed by the lack of high-speed signalling. “Modern digital train signals allow more trains to be run closer together, which is the only way to grow capacity,“ Ms Springle said. Arsonists strike at second kinder By LACHLAN MOORHEAD SUSPICIONS have been raised after a second Casey kindergarten was set on fire in three weeks. Police are investigating the incident in which the rear of Valley Brook Preshool in Hampton Park was torched about 11pm on Sunday 29 March. The fire took CFA crews more than an hour to get under control. It is believed the fire started in a small garden shed where paper was stored behind the Brook Court facility, before spreading to the pre-school building. It’s understood to have caused minor heat damage to the pre-school’s eaves and part of its outside panelling but the facility is expected to operate

as normal after the school holidays. The latest incident comes after the disused Mossgiel Park Preschool in Endeavour Hills was gutted by fire about 1.30pm on Sunday 8 March. That blaze took 20 minutes to get under control. It is believed the damage bill for that incident will be at least $400,000. The Mossgiel Park Preschool premises is owned by the council but was not being used. Last year it acted as a polling booth for the state election. No one is believed to be injured in either blaze. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or visit www.crimestoppers.com. au.

POLICE have identified the man whose dead body was found sprawled in the back seat of a burnt-out Holden in a Eumemmerring reserve last month as the owner of the car. Investigators say the incident is being treated as a murder. Dung Tri Pham. The owner of the red 2011 SV6 Holden Commodore has been identified as 40-year-old Dung Tri Pham from Hallam, who was known by police to be involved with drugs. Emergency services were called to a car fire at Olive Road Reserve by witnesses about 11.50pm on Thursday 26 March. JACK JOHNSON IS THE AUTHOR OF WHEN THE CLOCK STRIKES, A FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF GROWING UP IN DANDENONG, HIS YEARS TENDING TO THE CITY’S PIPES AND DRAINS AS A PLUMBER AND BRINGING UP A FAMILY WITH WIFE FRANCES IN THEIR BELOVED HOME IN MACPHERSON STREET.

Horror stories from the scary city’s streets WE HEARD every scary story imaginable from the big kids and some immature adults intent on frightening the daylights out of us. And this they did, for when we were at such an innocent and impressionable age, beginning to explore Our Place, we were very susceptible to these mythical tales of horror about the buildings and streets of central Dandenong. They could not frighten us about the bush, however, for we were born to the bush from generations of men and women who had pioneered Gippsland and Heathcote and parts of New South Wales. However, with the buildings of Our Place, we were not yet experienced

enough to understand the mysteries and myths that surrounded them. We soon learnt to sneak past Laurel Lodge where the Witch sat in the bay window weaving nets of cobwebs and watching, through black horn-rimmed glasses, down the gravel driveway to Langhorne Street. She was always clad in a long black dress with a high collar and on her

head was a small bonnet tied beneath her chin with black ribbon. A hat pin the size of a small stiletto with a large emblem at the end pierced the bonnet and over her shoulders she wore a black three-quarter length cloak with a stand-up collar tied at the throat with black ribbon. The story was that if you did not cross the road to the old police station house and jail she would direct her goblins and lackeys, who lived in the giant Moreton Bay Fig trees, to jump out and throw their sticky nets of heavy woven cobwebs over us. They would then drag us up the driveway into the cellar of Laurel Lodge where the witch would keep us imprisoned until she was ready to give

us the Hansel and Gretel test. We were also told that the old underground brick well out the back had no water in it and that this was where she kept kids when she had too many for the cellar. We also avoided the thick bush that grew within the grounds of Laurel Lodge. Goblins lived there, but were controlled by the good spirits next door at St James. We avoided the east side of Langhorne Street on our way to Crump’s Store or the old post office unless mum asked us to cut through the school and through the connecting back gate of Merlin, a private hospital run by Sister Ahern.

She was a close friend of mum and dad and we often picked up goods or prescriptions for her from Mr Titcher’s chemist shop in the main street. Sadly, Titcher’s did not escape the scary stories. We were convinced by the big kids that there was a mad scientist, like Dr X in the movies, who worked for Fu Man Chu and who came at night, after Mr Titcher went home, to make evil concoctions. When we became older and more worldly, we discovered the Witch of Laurel Lodge was a kindly old lady sitting in the sun in the bay window crocheting woollen shawls, not cobweb nets.

50 years ago 31 March 1965 Car Parking rear Rail Station A DEPUTATION to the Minister of Transport is seen by the Dandenong City Council as the only way the Victorian Railways can be influenced to allow its land at the Dandenong Station to be used for car parking. At the last meeting of the council, Cr Ian Fotheringham said that the council was providing facilities for the greater proportion of railway travellers at the station. “The Railways should provide sufficient parking space for their patrons”, he said. “This would allow council to clear congested roads, Foster St is a shambles now and is getting worse. “We must get cars parked on the

sides off the road and the only way we can do this is to get the use of Railway land on the north side of the railway.”

5 years ago 29 March 2010 Workers urged to get tested GREATER Dandenong workers have been urged to lay off the pies and chips and start exercising. Work Health figures revealed after more than 2000 workers were tested, close to half were at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Other results from the work health program for Greater Dandenong showed that; 94% weren’t eating enough fruit and vegetables, 79% were not getting enough exercise and 21% smoked. Work Health has partnered with Myer in Dandenong to offer checks in store. - Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 8 April 1915 The War Recruiting Public Meeting at Dandenong THE Dandenong Branch of the ANA Friendly Society initiated a movement to hold a public meeting at the Town Hall in order to arouse enthusiasm in the recruiting of volunteers for the Expeditionary Forces, and Thursday evening the hall was crowded with an enthusiastic audience. A torchlight procession, marshalled by Lieut Boyd, comprising members of the local battalion infantry, the cadets (in charge of Lieut Veal), and members of the fire brigade marched from the fire station to the town hall, and gave a display of fireworks en route.

Sir William Irvine KCMG addressed the gathering. “I have addressed many meetings in this hall, but tonight we must treat the subject with much anxiety. “There are no politics here tonight. We all belong to one political party - the party of Australia and the Empire. “When I received an invitation to address you here tonight I felt it a duty of those advancing in years to take their share. It is our duty to do what we can to raise the enthusiasm and to waken the knowledge of the people who are gathered here. “I am not at all sure, even now, whether the people of Australia have yet realised the extreme critical nature of the struggle in which we are engaged.“

20 years ago 3 April 1995 Splash for those in need PAINT will splash all over Dandenong on April 9 as part of an Australia wide joint project between Rotary and Bristol Paints. Celebrities and volunteers will use 50,000 litres of donated paint to freshen up the homes of over 500 elderly people and others in need. The project includes the preparation of the homes and all volunteers are welcome to pick up a brush. For more information contact your local Rotary club, or nearest Bristol paint store.

Snubbed out By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS POLICE have played down links between convicted paedophile priest Kevin O’Donnell and a suspicious blaze that damaged one of Dandenong’s biggest and oldest churches last Wednesday. The St Mary’s Catholic Church, which was built in 1959, was damaged by two fires - one at the altar and one in the sacristy - about 2.30am. The sacristy - an out-building storage area for vestments and silverware as well as a workshop and kitchen - was extensively damaged with flames burning through the floor. Its roof was torn open by firefighters in a bid to save the double-brick structure. Last weekend’s Easter services, which normally attract several thousand worshippers,

were moved to the nearby St Mary’s Primary School hall. The fires closely followed suspicious blazes at two Catholic churches in Brighton and St Kilda East in recent days. Accused paedophile priest Ronald Dennis Pickering had been a priest at both churches. The fires saddened current priest Declan O’Brien and a stunned group of parishioners who surveyed the damage last Wednesday. “It makes me feel sick. It’s not a good feeling,” Fr O’Brien said. He said he felt he and the church were an “innocent victim” of the suspected arsonist. “We’re not sure of the motivation of the person or persons behind this.” Greater Dandenong councillor John Kelly, one of St Mary’s

3000 parishioners and former altar-boy, said any vendetta theories were speculation. “It’s bloody disappointing if it’s someone who physically lit it - it’s a low act. “It will come back - the (structural) body of the church is saved and we have a fantastic priest and he’ll get it rocking and rolling again.” Last Wednesday Detective Senior Constable Nicholas Hayes of Greater Dandenong CIU said there was nothing yet to link the “suspicious” fire to the two other church blazes. “It’s going to be investigated to its fullest. There’s nothing to suggest the three are related at this stage.“ Anyone with information about the fires is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT…

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Hope lives on

NOBLE Park CWA members got clucky for a good cause this Easter. They delivered a basket of Easter wool chickens to Queen Elizabeth Centre (QEC) in Noble Park and throughout the year provide play mats, rugs and toys. QEC started nearly 100 years ago, saving babies from malnutrition and infection, and today provides specialised care, support and guidance to help parents manage the challenges of early parenthood. Its goal is to strengthen family resilience to build stronger communities. A KEYSBOROUGH block has sold for a record $633,000. It’s the highest price paid for land in the Somerfield estate, which launched in 2009. Intrapac Projects chief operating officer Max Shifman said the 603 square metre block had attracted overwhelming attention since going on the market. More than 85 per cent of land in the estate has sold. ANIMALS came off the worst in a rural family violence dispute at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court last Monday. A young man was accused with threatening to shoot his father’s pigs during an argument but there was more to the story. His lawyer told the court that the day before the father had left a gate open leading to a pig escaping, which was attacked by the son’s dog.

The father hit the dog with a block of wood and threatened to kill it with an axe. The magistrate dismissed the charge after hearing the rest of the family, including the son, had suffered from serious domestic violence. THERE was a painstaking 20 minutes as a Dandenong magistrate had to manually amend 12 charges ahead of an accused’s next bail hearing. When it was finished, a defence lawyer piped up that there might be a chance he would have to postpone the hearing. “If you do that, I’ll personally come down and strangle you,” the magistrate said - with a hint of jest. AN AIR of mystery surrounded a driver fined last week for careless driving. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told a witness saw the man’s four-wheel-drive veer left as it mounted speed humps in Springvale South. On one occasion, the vehicle collected a light post, on another deviation it crashed through a house’s wall. Police say no drugs or alcohol were consumed. When released from hospital, the man told police he had a migraine at the time that may have caused him to pass out. The magistrate said the incident must have been an aberration but it was a “significant deviation from the standard of care”. The man was convicted and fined $1200.

On Friday 13 to Saturday 14 March, Casey Relay for Life was held overnight uniting more than 4000 relayers from the community to take steps against cancer and show that hope lives in Casey for anyone with a cancer experience. My sincere thanks to each member of the Casey community who relayed, donated, volunteered or supported this moving community experience. Thanks to this support, this year Casey Relay for Life is expected to raise over $360,000 which will help ensure Cancer Council Victoria’s support, prevention and research programs continue. Each year, over 140,000 Australians support Cancer Council’s Relay for Life. Around the world, people in 24 countries come together at relay. I am constantly inspired by Relay for Life participants and volunteers, and their dedication to the cause. The money raised at Casey Relay for Life will help Cancer Council Victoria provide programs including: • Funding some of Victoria’s brightest researchers and their cutting-edge projects each year to help detect, treat and beat cancer; • Important prevention programs like PapScreen Victoria, Quit and SunSmart to make sure people have all the information they need to cut their risk of cancer; • Support services including a pro-bono legal assistance service to help those affected by cancer who may be struggling with issues such as wills, early access to superannuation, debt matters, or returning to work; • Experienced cancer nurses who answer calls to our information and support line, Cancer Council 13 11 20, giving people advice, information and support. I would encourage City of Casey residents to make use of this service to discuss their cancer-related questions by calling a registered nurse at the Cancer Council 13 11 20. Thank you again to everyone who relayed and helped continue the fight against cancer.

Hope lives in every step we take. Hope lives in Relay for Life. Todd Harper, Chief Executive Officer, Cancer Council Victoria.

Bus on board I AM writing to thank the residents of Dandenong and surrounding areas who welcomed the Beyondblue National Roadshow team so warmly on our recent visit. It was great to meet so many people who told us that they, or someone they know, have benefited from the work Beyondblue has done over the past 15 years. The many insightful conversations we had about mental health confirmed that there is still a great need for Beyondblue to continue raising awareness, reducing stigma, providing information and support to people with depression and anxiety, and their families, and tackling suicide. Our big blue bus will continue its travels until the end of May, encouraging people to make a pledge and tune in to their mental health, open up about common mental health problems like depression and anxiety, take action to get support if needed, and join us by supporting Beyondblue’s work. For those who missed our visit, you can always get information and find out where to get help in your area at www.beyondblue. org.au. If you, or someone you know, is having a tough time and you need to talk to someone, please contact the trained mental health professionals at our confidential support service 24/7 on 1300 22 4636 or chat online (3pm12am) or email us at www.beyondblue.org. au/getsupport. We are very grateful for the opportunity we had to work with and meet so many wonderful people. We want to thank you for your encouragement and we proudly give you our commitment to continue working to assist people with depression and anxiety and their families – wherever they live in Australia. Georgie Harman, CEO Beyondblue.

Paying for it A DRUNKEN driver with no explanation of why he repeatedly ploughed his car through a Dandenong South brothel’s front garden has been fined and disqualified from driving for four years. The ‘gentlemen’s club’ Garden of Eden wouldn’t have looked much like paradise after Daniel Bukin, 35, drove over a lawn, through a hedge and damaged a steel irrigation pipe and giant pot plant over several incursions about 10.30pm on 29 March. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Liz Millear told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday that Bukin crashed into

another car, drove out of the car park, and then sat in his car with music blaring at a “loud volume” until police arrived. As he made partial admissions, the officers noticed a “strong smell of intoxicating liquor” and a half-empty bottle of whiskey in the vehicle. Bukin repeatedly declined a blood-alcohol test, failed to give his name and address, refused to sign a bail undertaking to stay away from the brothel and gave no explanations for his behaviour, the court was told. His lawyer told the court a “distressed and remorseful” Bukin couldn’t explain his behaviour nor recollect all of the events due to a “blackout”.

The accused had told his lawyer: “There must be something wrong with me”. Magistrate Barry Schultz said alcohol was a “recurring theme” in Bukin’s criminal history, including being drunk in a public place in 2010. He said Bukin’s refusal to submit a breath test sample was the most serious of the charges. “You’re showing some insight in saying normal people don’t do what you did.” The brothel declined to seek court-ordered compensation of about $1000 from the accused. Bukin was convicted, fined $2000 and disqualified from driving for four years.

Steve Marsden will be displaying his cherished FX Holden at the Dandenong Valley All Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Holden Car Show. 137095

Holden wedding car owner vows ‘till death do us part’ By LACHLAN MOORHEAD STEVE Marsden wanted to use a vintage FX Holden for his wedding, but he couldn’t hire one anywhere. So the 33-year-old from Berwick and his wife Danielle ended up buying the 1950s car a couple of years ago and never looked back. Steve will be displaying the car - his pride and joy - at the Dandenong Valley All Holden Car Show later this month. “My wife and I have had it (the FX) for a couple of years now,” he said. “Half the reason we bought

it is because we wanted an FX for our wedding and we looked to hire one but no-one in Australia hires them out, so we looked around at buying one. “I’m a big Holden fan; I’ve got a couple of their cars. “I’d always wanted something like the FX and my wife likes old-style vintage cars, so this was my way of getting another.” Steve, a passionate member of the Eastside Cruisers Car Club, said he had bought the cream-coloured FX Holden from a man living near Mount Evelyn. “The owner collected cars

but he’d never driven this one for the last 20 years,” Steve said. “It’d had another paint job over 20 years ago, but it still comes up pretty clean. It’s all pretty much original.” The 7th Annual Dandenong Valley All Holden Street Car Show will be held from 9am to 3pm on Sunday 12 April at Greaves Reserve, Bennet Street, Dandenong. Entry is $5 for adults and free for children aged under 16 years. There’ll be activities for children, food vendors and more.

Doctor’s in the house By CASEY NEILL FORMER patients still stop Doctor Norval Yeaman in the street and beg him to return to work. He’ll turn 90 this year and hung up his stethoscope more than 18 months ago due to failing eyesight. It was his second attempt at retirement and he’s trying to make it stick. Norval stepped away from a group practice on Robinson Street, Dandenong, in 1993 and took a trip around Australia with wife Alma, a nurse. But they soon set up a makeshift clinic in their Narre Warren North home. “People started turning up here wanting to see me so we ended up carrying on,” Dr Yeaman said. Alma, who turns 87 this year, said many patients were sad to see them close their doors for good. “People will stop me in the street and say ‘Is your husband going to go back practising?’ and I have to tell them ‘No, he’s not’,” she said. Dr Yeaman was a doctor for 62 years after his principal at Shepparton High School nominated him and two other students to study medicine. He spent his first year of general practice in Barhum on the Murray River near Kerang. “You used to have to do everything yourself,” he said. “If a patient needed blood, you had to look up the directory and find out who’s the right group. “You had to call up, take the blood from them and then transfuse them. “There were a lot more issues that you had to be very careful about because you were the beginning and the end.” Dr Yeaman has seen great change in the medical profession. “When we started medicine there wasn’t even much in the way of antibiotics,” he said.

Doctor Norval Yeaman and his wife Alma. 131887 The Yeamans married and moved to Dandenong in 1953 after meeting at work at the Royal Women’s Hospital. They joined a practice in Robinson Street and worked long hours - Dr Yeaman sometimes delivered four babies in a

night, plus hospitals didn’t have casualty departments in those days. Alma clocked up 20 years as a nurse at Doveton Technical School and received the 1999 City of Casey Citizen of the Year award.

“I was just floored, wasn’t I?” she said. Alma regularly paid for underprivileged students to attend excursions. “The principal used to say to me ‘I don’t know what you come to work for, you give all your salary away’,” she said. “What I did was what anyone would have done.” The Yeamans have also raised three children. Daughter Judy runs the Andrews Centre in Endeavour Hills, a volunteer service for those less fortunate, and received an Order of Australia Medal for her efforts. Son Leslie is a urologist in Canberra. “I tried my best to talk Leslie out of doing medicine,” Alma said. “I said to him ‘Haven’t you seen enough of your father?’.” Daughter Sue from Harkaway is a midwife at Casey Hospital. “I’m very pleased that they’ve grown up into very nice adult people,” Alma said. “I think if you can achieve that as a mother you’ve done alright.” The Yeamans have for many years been heavily involved with St James Anglican Church in Dandenong. “St James would not be anything like as good at it is now without Norval,” Alma said. He interjected: “I wouldn’t quote that, that’s quite inappropriate”. But Alma insisted “That’s quite true!”. “For 41 years he was vicar’s warden and in those years it was his job with the other wardens to make sure that the church was kept in good condition,” she said. The Yeamans both shrug off praise, but conceded they had done a lot for the community over the years. “We’ve tried to. I went into nursing to try and help people and Norval certainly gave his life to medicine and to his patients,” Alma said.

Money for the shed THE Berwick Woodworkers Club is one of many activity groups in Casey that could share in $750,000 of State Government funding made available to build new men’s sheds across Victoria. Narre Warren MP Luke Donnellan said grants of up to $60,000 were available for men’s groups to build new facilities. The funds may be used to construct a new men’s shed, redevelop an existing building into a men’s shed, or co-locate a men’s shed in a multi-function community facility. “Men in the local community have constructed new networks via men’s activities programs such as the Berwick Woodworkers Club and I encourage all local men’s activity groups to apply for a grant,” Mr Donnellan said. “By encouraging local men to roll their sleeves up, the Berwick Woodworkers Club has seen them build friendships and serve the local community.” Applications that demonstrate significant partnerships and support from relevant community groups - such as the local council, neighbourhood houses or adult-learning providers - are encouraged to apply. Applications for the grants close on 19 June. For more information visit www.dhs.vic.gov.au.

New welcome By BRIDGET SCOTT THE new multi-million dollar facility for the City of Casey had its official sod turn and naming last Monday, with about 100 guests present to witness the occasion. The ground of the Casey Cultural Precinct, now known as Bunjil, was officially broken by City of Casey mayor Mick Morland as his fellow councillors and others watched on. Dean Stewart officially welcomed everyone to the traditional land of the Indigenous tribes, and explained the meaning behind the new name of the centre. tural hero and ancestral being. Following this Cr Morland spoke about the importance of the $17.4 million project which is scheduled to open in 2017. “This is the largest ever infrastructure planned for the City of Casey,” he said. “It’s also a first for local government.” Councillor Morland was also the mayor when Casey ARC, which is currently the largest building in Casey, was officially opened 14 years ago. “It will be a centrepiece for residents,” Cr Morland said. The precinct will feature an 800-seat regional theatre, multi-purpose exhibition space, regional art gallery, community

library, civic centre and council offices, community plaza and a regional schools centre for the arts. Three City of Casey residents were called to the stage to help unveil the name, a title chosen based on their three submissions for the naming competition. Robin Dzedins, Nino Occhietti and June Talbert each incorporated Bunjil in to their submission, and said they found that this was fitting and reflective of the building’s design. Councillor Morland said this would be an ideal meeting place for residents and tourists. “It will be somewhere where everyone feels welcome,” he said.

Training days By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE State Government last month opened a new $26 million training facility at Chisholm Institute’s Berwick campus. Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert officially opened the Berwick Trade Career Centre on Wednesday 25 March, which will serve as a multitrade simulated building site to support training in carpentry, plumbing, bricklaying and electrical work. Mr Herbert was also joined by Narre Warren South MP Ju-

dith Graley and Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan to unveil the new facility, which comes as the Andrews Government also announced their $50 million TAFE Back to Work Fund last week. “This new facility will help Chisholm Institute deliver more training in skills shortage occupations across the south-east, supporting locals to develop the skills they need to get the jobs they want,” Mr Herbert said. “The centre’s innovative approach to construction industry training will help students and apprentices learn to navigate

work on a building site, giving them an advantage.” The Berwick Trade Careers Centre offers training from Certificate III to Diploma level, while Certificate IV and Diploma of Building Construction, as post-trade qualifications, will be offered from the second half of 2015. Ms Graley said the Casey community was home to many young people “who are looking to gain skills.” “Too many are struggling to find work or access training and this great local facility will provide them with the opportunity to do just that,” she said.

Ishira Kanathigoda, who will be showcasing his paintings at Dandenong’s Walker Street Gallery later this month, stands next to some of his work. 137159 Picture: GARY SISSONS

WHEN Sri Lankan-born Ishira Kanathigoda moved to Australia three years ago he brought his talent for painting along with him. Later this month the Casey resident will be showcasing and speaking about his paintings at Dandenong’s Walker Street Gallery as part of the Ancient Cultures New Futures exhibition. Influenced in his early days by impressionism, all of Ishira’s art pieces displayed in the coming exhibition depict either Sri Lankan or Australian landscapes. Ishira, who also works as a banker, said his passion for art began as a child when his mother, Piyaseeli, encouraged her son to take art classes. “I was very interested in art, from a young age,” the 42-year-old said. “I started drawing, and was into art when I was 14. My mother was a teacher and identified my talents.

Police Stance hits auto crime figures

BEST BUYS OF THE WEEK

A NEW police operation has resulted in a drop in auto crime. Operation Stance, which began on 22 February, has already contributed to 49 per cent reduction in theft of car and a 52 per cent reduction in theft from cars. Police have checked more than 200 people and intercepted 100 cars. Narre Warren Detective Senior Sergeant John Bergin said police had made a number of arrests during Operation Stance. He said police were keen to highlight the inconvenience for victims when thieves rifled through their cars. As well as losing valuables, including treasured photos, he said crime victims had to deal with making insurance claims. Police urged the community to support Operation Stance by locking their cars. Victoria Police statistics revealed that between 2013 and 2014 there were 48,000 reports of thefts from cars in Victoria. In 41,000 cases there was no sign of forced entry.

“She was a history teacher but she had a very good taste in art and I was backed by my mother to come through this journey. “In my childhood she took me to a private art school and I continued to keep on doing that. “I didn’t give up.” Through the 1990s Ishira was identified as a talented emerging artist in his home country. “I did it as a hobby but I was a reputed figure in art in Sri Lanka, and demonstrated at a huge number of exhibitions,” he said. But Ishira stressed that painting was more than just a hobby for him. When he moved to Adelaide and then Victoria with his wife Hansanee and his three children, pursuing art was never far from his mind. “I was googling art events and that type of thing, to get involved in, and I found the Walker Street Gallery,” he said. “I met with David (from the gallery) and he wanted to see my pictures and he was highly impressed with my work.” In this way Ishira’s passion for art has not dimmed since moving downunder - if anything the fire is burning even brighter. “It’s a valuable part of my life, it takes up a reasonable part of my day,” he said. “There’s always a painting on my easel. “It’s a way that I express all my feelings, good or bad and the other thing is that I get away from all the pressure during the day. “I use that time to get into another world, through colours.” For more information on the exhibition, contact Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre on 9706 8441.

GREATER Dandenong Council has declared a two-week trial of extra security measures at Dandenong Civic Centre a success. Jody Bosman, the council’s city planning, design and amenity director, reported “no further significant incidents” during the trial - which included extra highly-visible guards and police patrols in the civic and library precinct. There had been mounting concern over rising mob violence in the precinct including a mass brawl in the civic square and a stabbing and assault nearby last month. “Council and Victoria Police have worked in close partnership to ensure no further incidents would occur,” Mr Bosman said. “That partnership has been very successful, with no further significant incidents being reported.” The council would continue to work closely with police “to ensure inappropriate behaviour and/or criminal acitivity is kept to an absolute minimum in public areas of the municipality”. He said the council did not disclose security arrangement details at any of its facilities “as that may compromise the effectiveness of those arrangements”. - CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

NEW HOMES & LAND

BUYERS FLOCK TO CARDINIA VIEWS RESIDENTIAL land buyers in Pakenham have welcomed Villa World’s Cardinia Views development with open arms by snapping up half of the project’s second stage. It comes after the success of the 300 plus-lot community’s first stage, which is almost 90 per cent sold. Launched in October last year, Cardinia Views is adjacent to Peet’s award-winning Cardinia Lakes community, boasts picturesque rural views and is within walking distance of the local shopping

centre including a Coles supermarket. Cardinia Views offers family-sized blocks ranging from 497sqm to more than 600sqm and priced from $179,000. Smaller lots of 409sqm are selling from $175,000. Villa World state manager, Victoria, Chris Betts said sales activity to date had been driven by large block sizes, the site’s countryside views and proximity to shops, services and community facilities. “The Pakenham town centre is just two kilometres away and it offers medical and

public transport services in addition to its retail and commercial outlets,” he said. “Numerous sporting, recreational and educational facilities are nearby, and there are plans in the pipeline for Cardinia Lakes to have its own primary school.” Mr Betts said the majority of buyers at Cardinia Views were from the local area. “They are families upgrading to a new home while staying within their existing community,” he said. Facilities in the area include a cultural centre, aquatic centre, Pakenham Golf

Course and Cardinia Lakes Parklands. Cardinia Views is located on Superior Waters, just off Windermere Boulevard, Pakenham. For more information 1800 751 115 or visit cardiniaviews.com.au. The Land Sales and Information centre on Windermere Boulevard (opposite Coles) is open noon to 5pm, seven days a week. Established in 1986, Villa World is an ASX-listed developer and one of Australia’s largest housing providers.

Her Drum role By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THERE’S a feeling of a full circle for Springvale-born actor Diana Nguyen as she prepares for her Drum Theatre debut. She and long-time friend Fiona Chau finish their final stage-tour of their comedy Phi and Me at the Dandenong theatre this month. “We want to finish with a bang back where we began,” the exuberant comedian said. It’s the original show - with some pathos added to the slapstick misunderstandings between Vietnamese ‘dragon mum’ (Nguyen) and her Australian-born teenage son (Chau). Nguyen explains that the extra

layers were an extension of the actors’ softening views since they first played it for laughs and sold out at Melbourne’s international comedy festivals. “I’m proud of the show. It’s what the original show should have been. “Audience members say that the new scene made them reflect what the mother had gone through (when they arrived in Australia).” She said there was also some poignancy in the recent death of former prime minister Malcolm Fraser, who ushered in thousands of Vietnamese refugees in the 1970s. His death, close to the 40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam

War, was been marked with gratitude by the Vietnamese community, Nguyen said. Phi and Me meanwhile is set to regenerate into an internet-based series - crowd-funded by 65 donors. The plan is to connect these characters to a wider overseas audience. “I would love to keep performing the (stage) show but theatre does take a lot of energy. “There’s only so much time we can keep performing like that.” Phi and Me: We’re Back is at Drum Theatre, 226 Lonsdale Street, Dandenong, on 18 April, 7.30pm. Bookings on 8571 1666 or at drumtheatre.com.au.

IN BRIEF

Patient GP bypass A HEALTH organisation head has called for a focus on chronic disease patients after national data suggested patients were attending emergency departments instead of their GPs. South Eastern Melbourne Medical Local chairman Nicholas Demediuk said there was a need for more co-ordinated care to save the health system budget and keep patients healthy and out of hospitals. Dr Demediuk said there was a need to focus on management of chronic disease, persistent pain and mental health. According to a recent National Health Performance Authority report, the highest rate of GP visitors were in similar low-urban-density and lower socio-economic status regions such as south-east Melbourne. In Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia, about 21 per cent of people visited GPs more than 12 times a year. “The report findings show that people who see GPs more frequently often have multiple long-term problems and need high quality, coordinated primary and hospital care,” Dr Demediuk said.

Driver park hunt THE police Dog Squad was called in to track a man who fled through Akoonah Park after evading a booze bus last month. The police chase started after a black Holden with false plates deliberately drove past the police booze bus along Soldiers Road in Beaconsfield and sped off just after 6pm on Saturday 28 March. Police drove after the car as it headed along Princes Highway in Berwick before the male driver dumped the Holden and fled into nearby Akoonah Park. The reserve was cordoned off while police dogs searched but failed to find the man. Wilson Fernandez with his miniature shoes. 135817

Picture: KIM CARTMELL

Heart is in the sole of his little shoes By CASEY NEILL A DANDENONG North man could have the world’s largest collection of tiny shoes. Wilson Fernandez started collecting the miniatures during a trip to India about 10 years ago. He now has more than 960 and is in the running for a Limca Book of Records title. “I wanted to buy shoes for myself and the family. “While we were at this shop I came across small leather sandals in miniature sizes that replicated the big ones exactly,” he said. “They were called Kolhapuri

Chappal. I was so amazed to look at the details and the craftsmanship of these miniatures.” Mr Fernandez bought the jar filled with 12 shoes but forgot about them upon his return home. “It was a year later my wife found those Kolhapuri Chappals still lying in the holiday bag,” he said. “She handed it to me with a look and reminded me of the day I was so carried away with those miniature shoes. “Over the years, during my business and pleasure travels to new places, I started looking for shoes that represent the countries and places I visited.”

Leather boots from Vienna were the second addition to his collection, and Japanese geta, Korean hwahye, Turkish sabahs, Indian kolhapuri, Pakistani mojari, Dutch klomps, moccasins, sports shoes and more have joined them. Materials include plastic, wood, straw, metal, clay, fabric and paper and the smallest pair is about three by five millimetres in size. “I love these miniatures because of their magnificent details, craftsmanship, intricate designs... ” Mr Fernandez said. He displays the shoes on his living room wall. “The wall of great miniature

shoes reminds me of the places visited, the best moments of those places, the culture, diversity, friendship and more,” he said. A friend suggested Mr Fernandez contact the Limca Book of Records. “I am sure if my collection stands out to be the highest, I may be the record holder for 2016,” he said. “I have also contacted World Records Academy. Only time will tell me if I have the largest collection of miniature shoes in the world or not. “Whatever may be the outcome of the records book I am truly excited about this unique hobby that keeps me happy and creative.”

Sticky fingers go crazy about cute critters KIDS of all ages made crazy critters and cute, cuddly creatures at Dandenong Market last week. Free school holiday craft workshop Crazy Creatures Animal Craft will run on market days throughout the school holidays. There'll be a new activity each day, from animal masks to menagerie mobiles, paper bag puppets and storyboard felt animal pictures. Award-winning face painter Sci Westwood last week guided the crafters to create Easterthemed animals, like bunnies and chicks. Workshops will be held in Market Square, Dandenong Market, corner Clow and Cleeland streets, Dandenong, from 11am to 3pm on Tuesday 7, Friday 10, Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 April. No bookings are required.

OWNERS of deceased animals found on the side of the road will now be notified thanks to a change in standards. Animals which have been killed on the road will now be scanned and owners notified. Cranbourne resident Tracey Prillwitz was concerned about the previous laws under which owners were not notified about dead pets. “I have two dogs and if something happened to them I would hate it, and could not stand not being notified,” she said. “They’re absent and you never find out why.” Councillor Gary Rowe who suggested the change said council had ensured there was appropriate equipment to undertake checks. “It will help provide closure for owners.” City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland said that any cat or dog which was more than three months of age must be registered. “Registration fees help provide a range of important pet-related services within the City of Casey,” he said. “Council has issued animal registration renewal; notices to all of the pet owners of dogs and cats in the municipality.” He said it is the pet owner’s responsibility to ensure their animal was registered and payment made by 10 April. Animal registration fees help provide services such as: Daily updating of the City of Casey Lost Pets Register. Reuniting lost pets with their families in up to 68 per cent of cases. Collection of lost and wandering pets, including 24-hour service during peak periods. Provision of cat cages for hire, to trap feral or wandering cats. Investigation and potential prosecution of dog attacks in private and public places. Animal registrations can be paid online via the council’s website at www.casey.vic.gov.au/pets or via BPAY, Australia Post or over the phone by calling customer service on 9705 5200.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST Survey to get firms out of their jams

Saving family is shop owner’s ultimate goal By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS KHAN Hazara has no shortage of drive but there’s one ultimate goal that has even eluded him. The Eumemmering refugee - and now Australian citizen - is a father of three in his mid-twenties who put in 120-hour weeks to build a small bakery into his own Halal-food supermarket Dandy Mart. He scoured Australia for a suitable site but settled close to home in 2012 - finding a good position and a lot of loyal customers in Hampton Park. He’s now happy with the business, scaling his working week to five days and sponsoring a range of community groups and festivals. But the one missing piece in his life is his family - his mother, his wife and children. The Afghan refugees are still stranded dangerously in Quetta, Pakistan, where their Hazara ethnicity makes them potential targets for persecution and bombings. Despite his desperation, his application for them to reunite with him in Australia has foundered. His latest advice from a migration lawyer is a wait of up to 12 months. “I call them every single night. I just hope to find some ways to get them here. “The family (reunion) application... no-one understands it. “When you ask them, they say the application is in the queue. “They say first bring your (immediate) family and then you can apply for your mum. “It’s really annoying. I don’t want mum to be left there by herself.” Khan has visited them four times since arriving in Australia. At times he risked being unable to return here since “there were no guarantees on a permanent visa”. He’s since remedied that situation by becoming an Australian citizen. Last week, he set off to see them again as the final leg of a business trip to Dubai, China and Thailand. Khan arrived in Australia as a refugee in 2009 after a gruelling clandestine trip through Malaysia and Indonesia. Luckily for him his detention on Christmas Island was brief. He realises many “like me” are languishing for uncertain durations in Manus Island and Nauru detention centres. He also knows many local refugees of his age remain “lost” without a vocation and beset by financial problems and mental health issues, he said. “Hazaras have been killed for so long - it affects your mind. “You don’t come here to make money, but save your life.”

TRAFFIC woes in Dandenong South are in the spotlight and businesses can have their say. The City of Greater Dandenong has commissioned a study to identify key issues and traffic choke points in the area. It comes in response to increased business concerns about congestion and the negative impacts on their operations and profits. The council, South East Business Networks (SEBN) and others will use findings from the SGS Economics and Planning study to lobby governments to alleviate the traffic issues. In an email to businesses, SEBN said it was keen to understand the adequacy of road infrastructure that businesses relied on for efficient transport and worker movement. “It is critical that we have solid evidence to support our submissions to government for funding to address traffic congestion issues and to lobby for the prioritisation of projects such as the Abbotts Road/Remington Drive road-rail grade separation,” the email said. The survey needs to be completed by Friday 10 April. Call Sandra George at SEBN on 8571 1576 or Rebecca Stroud at SGS on 8616 0331 with any questions. Read this story at dandenong.starcommunity. com.au for a link to the survey.

SKATERS, officials and fans will dress in their acid-washed, neon and grunge finest for the next South Sea Roller Derby (SSRD) bout. Home teams the Blackheart Breakers and the Dolly Rodgers will do battle in the ’90s-themed skate off Pump Up the Jams on Saturday 18 April. Breakers captain Harmin’ Miranda said the side only lost one game last year - to the Dollys. “So we very much want to make up for that slight slip-up,” she said. The Breakers are undefeated for the year after beating Ballarat Rat Pack in Daylesford in the first round of Battle for the Bay and fellow SSRD home team Cutthroat Charmers. The Dollys lost their first game for the year against Geelong’s Psychotics. The bout will be held at Springers Stadium, 400 Cheltenham Road, Keysborough. Doors open at 6pm for skates down at 7pm. There’ll be market stalls on site and a bar for over 18s. Tickets are available online at www.southsearollerderby.com and at the door. SSRD is a skater-owned, skater-operated amateur league. It will hold its next ‘freshmeat’ intake - to recruit new skaters - on Sunday 19 April at 12.30pm at The Shed, Greaves Reserve, Bennet Street, Dandenong. It’s $10 to take part. Email freshmeat@southsearollerderby.com or visit www.southsearollerderby.com for more information.

SPORT

Who’s in… and who’s out SOUTHERN football is set to return on Saturday with teams from around Greater Dandenong and Casey. Newcomers Keysborough have recruited heavily ahead of their SFL Division-2 debut against soon-to-be local rivals Doveton Eagles, while Springvale Districts have recruited the big forward ammunition needed for a return to the finals. With the controversy of last year’s no-result grand final still around Division 3, everyone will be out for a clean start without any issues. JARROD POTTER takes a look at the ins and outs around the divisions with Round 1 a mere six days away. SFL DIVISION 2 DOVETON EAGLES COACH: Daniel Macklin IN: Trent Day, Mitch Gersbeck, Daniel Macklin. OUT: Nathan Wilson, Peter Dye, Matt O’Callaghan, Sam Parlapiano, Darren Ramsdale. COBRAS are becoming Eagles rapidly under new coach Daniel Macklin while their tall stocks have taken a hit with Nathan Wilson and Peter Dye heading back to Doveton this year. Doveton Eagles will host Keysborough in its first SFL match. KEYSBOROUGH COACH: Ryan Goodes IN: Scott Chamberlain, Matthew Day, Shaun Dekkers, Jake Dunn, Shane Dunn, Will Gayfer, Nathan Kriening, George Lazaridis, Justin Tully, Greg Walker, Dylan Wheeler. OUT: Chris Bryan, Daniel Papa, David Vassallo. THE prodigal sons have returned home. With hopes of a successful season in the new ranks,

Keysborough’s numbers have skyrocketed as new coach Ryan Goodes has a problem with too many selection choices rather than previous Casey Cardinia selection nightmares. Will Gayfer, a former skipper, has returned to Rowley Allen Reserve while former coach and ruckman Chris Bryan has packed up and gone to Bonbeach. Daniel Papa and David Vassallo are the other two main clearances heading away from the Burra. Keysborough will travel for its first SFL match, facing Doveton Eagles. SPRINGVALE DISTRICTS COACH: Brett Dunne IN: James Gough, Ben Stacey, Shannon Brown, Patrick Cooke, Richard Costantino, Hugh CullenScholes, Mitch Latimer. OUT: Clinton Brooks, Chris Chalmers, Gavin Vassollo, Greg Walker. THERE was no bigger name in SFL Division 3 last year than James Gough - who dominated any opposition backline en route to 105 goals and will be the Demons’ forward coach under Brett Dunne. Losing Gavin Vassallo is not ideal as he generated a lot of the club’s midfield hard-ball gets last season, but Ben Stacey will give some added power after earning an SFL Divison-3 best and fairest last season. Springvale Districts heads to Highett to start 2015. DIVISION 3 DANDENONG COACH: Glenn Jose IN: Josh Cole, Paul Gould, Luke Harvey, Nathan Osler. OUT: Matthew Van Schajik, Brodie O’Laughlin, Rob Mackwell, Daniel Egan.

A LOT of experience has left Greaves Reserve, with the new look Redlegs set to run out under new coach Glenn Jose. With a playing/coaching resume as long as your arm - playing at Frankston Pines, Beaconsfield, Bunyip and coaching Gembrook - he has the credentials needed to push the Redlegs back up the ladder, but will need to unearth a few gems along the way to bolster his playing stocks. ENDEAVOUR HILLS COACH: Steve Muscat IN: David Vassallo, Daniel Morrison, Joel Marie, Cade Marshall, Daniel Strom. OUT: Mathew Ashenden, Daniel Batson. MOSTLY similar squad to last year. Bit more experience in the Falcons’ legs won’t do them any harm in a stronger Division-3 competition. Endeavour Hills faces Sandown at home on Saturday. HALLAM Coach: Gary Frangalas IN: Luke Barrie-Sewell, Danny Hartley, Nathan Prosser, Shane Thomas, Travis Walker. OUT: Jack Barrie-Sewell, Hayden Fredericks, Ryan Marriott, Bryce Neve, Rory Mcivor, Kieran Smith. THERE’S been a big cleanout at Frawley Road with the inaugural captain Keiran Smith and first coach Hayden Fredericks departing the Hawks after three years together, as well as losing star young duo Rory Mcivor and Bryce Neve. It leaves a lot for new coach Gary Frangalas - former Richmond/Sydney AFL player - to turn around, but on the positive side quite a lot of juniors have joined from the SEJ side. Hallam heads to Carrum Patterson Lakes first up.

Ranger Cumming returning back home By JARROD POTTER WITH a WNBL championship and two years of Townsville sunshine under her belt, Steph Cumming, 24, originally from Endeavour Hills, is set to don the green-and-gold once again as she returns to Dandenong. With her long-time SEABL coach Larissa Anderson at the helm of the Rangers in her inaugural coaching stint, once Cumming announced she had left the Fire it was just a matter of time until she signed the dotted line back at Dandenong Basketball Stadium. The livewire guard was a crucial part of the Townsville’s championship success as she rattled off 11.4 points, two assists and 2.8 rebounds a game.

Steph Cumming will return to Dandenong for the upcoming Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS WNBL season. 95000 Dandenong Basketball Asso“It’s testament to the Dandeciation CEO David Graham was nong Program that Larissa has thrilled to see the first marquee the quality of players available signing land on the roster for the for WNBL selection from our upcoming season and for it to be own backyard.” CEO David Graa returning Ranger makes it all ham said. the more exciting. “We’re all excited that Steph

is back and believe she’ll play a huge role in our championship campaign next season. “She’s a free-flowing guard with a great shot and solid defensive fundamentals. “Larissa has worked hard to lure her back to the program which I know all of Dandenong will be happy about.“ Aimie Clydesdale also signed on to stay with the Rangers after an exceptional 2014/15 WNBL season, as she stepped up to fill Kathleen Macleod’s point guard duties while the Olympic Games medallist was sidelined with a knee injury. And Rangers’ Alice Kunek has gone back to the Melbourne Boomers after two seasons at Dandenong.

LYNDALE COACH: Ivan Lajoie IN: Dale Fitzgerald, Anthony McDonald, Phillip Ross, Shannon Schofield, Daniel Vigliarolo, Michael Woodward. OUT: Ordell Buntine, Brad Carroll, Ben Cox, Trent Day, Trevor Kumetaitis, Matthew Smith. THE core of last year’s preliminary final side has left along with former coach Rod Benstead. There are a lot of ins to fill the holes, but only time will tell if they match up to the same calibre as the 2014 Pumas. Brett Tosh was announced skipper of the Pumas and will lead them out in the season opener against Dandenong. SANDOWN Coach: Rick Bean IN: Luke Newton, Owen Uaongo, Mitchell Uaongo. OUT: Jake Chapman, John Frenken, Mitch Gersbeck, Brad Hemphill, Daniel Macklin, Matthew Menzies, Michael Rossborough, Jason Toan, Jesse Tregea, Nicholas Morrish. THE ins list is impressive for Sandown Cobras – with country tall tandem Owen and Mitchell Uaongo set to star in the Cobras’ ruck. The only problem so far for Sandown has been its struggles to get clearances from Chelsea Heights as Daniel Gerandt, Richard Gow and Luke Williams have all been knocked back at the final moments before the first bounce. These ins were going to form the basis of the side, especially with a number of top calibre players like Daniel Macklin and Jason Toan leaving. Sandown will also get a onegame forward boost from Carlton/Brisbane AFL player Brendan Fevola. Sandown will travel to face Endeavour Hills.

Coach leads the push By JARROD POTTER A CLEAN slate in 2015 is just what Noble Park needed ahead of a highly anticipated Eastern Football League campaign. The Bulls have put to bed an aberrant year in 2014 – after finishing with an eightwin season to miss the finals and finish eighth. With coach Jon Knight and the club deciding to part ways with two rounds remaining last year, stability was needed for the new season and it came in the form of returning premiership coach Mick Fogarty. The biggest additions to Noble Park’s roster are former AFL midfielder Kyle Martin, two-time VFL Liston Medal winner Shane Valenti

and the return of two powerful VFL players – Ziggy Alwan and Jackson Sketcher. Everything is fresh for the 2015 season down at the Bullring as Noble Park sizes up for a tilt at EFL premiership number five. There are new look facilities as the pavilion and change rooms were upgraded throughout last year and are now no longer shoeboxsized, dark and dated. The pre-season challenges have been ticked off as practice matches and interleague duties are left behind and the only thing left is the first bounce. Noble Park will host South Croydon on Saturday from 2.10pm.

Kia Rio is ideally suited for suburbia.

FREE dash cam WITH ANY NEW MAZDA*

KIA Rio is the smallest model in the Korean carmaker’s Australian range and has been a steady seller over the years, especially following its 2011 styling transformation. The latest version was launched in 2012 and given regular updates, the most recent of which was in January 2015 with some minor styling changes, suspension tweaks and revised variant names. Working on the “if it ain’t broke…” philosophy changes to the outward appearance of the new Rio are barely noticeable and it remains a neat and attractive little vehicle. For the record there are new bumpers, front and rear, new grille pattern and metallic look headlamps. Inside, the centre instrument fascia of the dashboard has been glossed up and the audio unit redesigned. Australian Kias have previously been available in four-door sedan format but are now exclusively three or five-door hatchbacks with no return of the four-door likely in the immediate future. For a car of its size interior space in the Rio is quite impressive. Entry and exit into the front seats is relatively easy even for larger occupants, though there’s a bit more bending required to access the rear seats. Once inside there’s good headroom and acceptable legroom albeit with a bit of co-operation needed between taller front and/or rear occupants. Lateral space in the rear is OK for two adults but not for a third. Three mid-sized children will just about fit. Controls are large and well-positioned with

three large dials directly in front of the driver displaying speed, revs and fuel status. The steering wheel has both telescopic and tilt adjustment as well as audio and cruise control buttons. The boot isn’t especially long but is deep enough for a couple of relatively large suitcases with the space-saver spare wheel below the boot floor. There are small storage spaces on either side of the boot wall and a full-length cargo blind. Two naturally-aspirated petrol engines are offered, a 1.4-litre petrol engine producing 79 kW of power at 6300 rpm and 135 Nm of torque at 4200 revs, and 1.6-litre petrol with 103 kW at 6300 rpm and 167 Nm at 4850 rpm. The 1.4 can be mated to either a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic, 1.6 gets a more modern six-speed auto. The Rio model range for 2015 has been changed with three equipment levels; S, S Premium and Si. The S is available with either three or five doors and gets the 1.4-litre engine. The S Premium also gets the smaller engine but is a five-door only as is the Si but with the extra power of the 1.6-litre unit. The 1.4-litre models comes with 15-inch alloy wheels; the 1.6 uses 16-inchers. The range will be topped up with two additional models, Sport and SLi, which are due to arrive here around May 2015. Standard in all models are six airbags; ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist; hill start assist; high-mounted rear stop light; two IsoFix child seat sockets; and impact-sensing auto door unlocking. Kia’s recent decision to extend its standard warranty to seven years and unlimited kilometres adds even more value to the already well-priced Rio.
