AS FAMILIES and a young couple set up picnics, or wandered off into the bush at Dom Dom Saddle on Sunday, Zee Meyer was setting up a photo of her missing husband, Warren. Seven Easter Sundays have been endured since Warren Meyer was last seen by Zee, their daughter Renee, and son Julien. A vigil at the place where Warren set out on a bushwalk on 23 March, 2008, never to be seen again, brought family and friends together to light a candle to remember him, and to thank those who have provided support to the family as they searched for his remains, and continue to search for answers. The family believes that Warren met his death at the hands of shooters, as reported in the Mail on 24 March, and are campaigning for a renewed investigation into his death, and for a coronial inquest. They hope that their presence on Dom Dom Saddle, and keeping Warren’s disappearance in the media spotlight might prompt someone to come forward with the information they need to finally know what happened. They hope it will prick someone’s conscience. “You should have the freedom to put on a pair of hiking boots, go on a 10-kilometre walk in a park setting in warm, sunny conditions, and have the expectation that you will return safely to your family,” Zee said. She said Warren had such a zest for life and would have had the strongest will to live. “He would have fought the toughest fight to get back to us,” she said. Instead, she said, “He died alone in the hills around here, and that is not easy for a family to reconcile with. “Seven years later we are still dealing with the consequences of that day.” Zee spoke of life without Warren

and said one of their deepest regrets was that he did not witness Renee and Julien’s marriages, welcome their partners Ewan and Brooke into the family, or hold his first grandchild, Cooper and other grandchildren she said would no doubt follow. Renee spoke also of the bittersweet unreality they had lived with for the past seven years, saying it still felt raw and unreal. “We are hoping from this that someone has empathy with how we feel and will come forward.” Her almost whispered closing comment is heart-breaking, and very real. “I just hope it was quick.” Zee’s brother, Allan Spencer addressed some of the issues that their campaign raised. He said while police searching did a fantastic job, he labelled the police investigation as ‘pathetic’. He spoke in particular of shooters who were shooting indiscriminately on the Saturday and Sunday. “We know Warren would have been on the track when this shooting started on Sunday morning,” he said. He said reports indicated that the shooting stopped soon after that time and that the shooters presumably left the area. As part of their ‘What happened to Warren? Speak up’ campaign, the family wants to speak to campers, trailbike riders, and hikers who might have seen or heard excessive levels of shooting in the area on that weekend. They are also appealing for a trailbike rider to come forward who they say spoke to a disorientated man in his mid-thirties who was asking for help in the area. The “What happened to Warren? Speak up“ campaign can be found at warrenmeyer.com.au, or on Twitter@ SpeakUp4Warren. Anybody with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Something to sprout about By KATH GANNAWAY AFTER 60 years, the not so humble Brussels sprout is about to get the recognition it deserves. The Adams sprout farms in Coldstream, just past Dame Nellie Melba’s Coombe Cottage, make for a real slice of rural life as visitors make their way up the Melba and Maroondah highways to Yarra Glen and Healesville. The inaugural Big Sprout Fest on Sunday, 12 April, will celebrate the Adams family’s pioneering contribution to Australia’s sprout production with the unveiling of a ‘Big Sprout’. Made of fibreglass, and inspired by a Big Strawberry at Cobram, the exact size and form of the Big Sprout is a secret, but, essentially, it will represent the 1200 tonnes of sprouts that are hand-picked annually on the farms. Bruce Adams is at the helm of the family business which was started by his father, Arthur, and his uncles, David, Charles and Raymond, the only surviving brother. The brothers started growing cabbages on the land about 60 years ago and, looking for a challenge, decided to break into the sprout market. At one point the Adams farms laid claim to the title of the largest sprout producers in the Southern Hemisphere. Bruce’s daughter, Narelle, one of the organisers of the festival, says they are still in contention with the title between their farms and a similar operation in Adelaide. Narelle says the family is looking forward to the festival which will showcase the sprout with cooking demonstrations and tastings, market stalls, tractor rides and farm tours, children’s activities, hot air balloon rides and the reveal of The Big Sprout. The festival is at Adams Farms, 681 Maroondah Highway, Coldstream from 10am to 3pm with the big reveal at about 1pm. Car parking is $2 with proceeds to the Coldstream CFA.

In brief Lucky to be alive THREE people were lucky to be alive after a car rolled down an embankment and into a tree in Yarra Glen late last month. The driver of the car, a man aged in his late teens, was driving towards Eltham on the Yarra Glen-Eltham Road before noon on Saturday 28 March, when he lost control, rolled his car down an embankment and hit a tree. He was trapped in the car for an hour and was rescued by emergency services, before being airlifted to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition. A woman and a baby, also in the car at the time of the crash, were also taken to hospital. Police, SES, fire brigade and paramedics all attended the scene of the crash.

Lock it up rurally POLICE are reminding residents on rural properties to protect their gear, after a chainsaw was stolen from an unlocked shed in Hoddles Creek. Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant, Mark Smithwick, said that on the weekend of 28-29 March, an unknown person entered an unlocked shed on a Sheep Station Creek Road property and stole a chainsaw. Det Sgt Smithwick said that people on rural properties often left sheds unlocked, which made them more accessible for would-be thieves. “We’re getting a bit of this,” he said. “We’re reminding people to lock their sheds up.” Anyone with information on the stolen chainsaw is asked to call Lilydale Police on 9739 2300 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Extra TV query DOES anyone you know currently have an unexplained new television set? Police are appealing for information after a television set was stolen in a Wandin residential burglary. Overnight on Thursday 19 and Friday 20 March, a Parker Road property was broken into, and a television set was stolen. Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity or who has information is asked contact Lilydale police on 9739 2300 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Bad year for smoky vintage By JESSE GRAHAM THE YARRA Valley’s wine industry representatives tried to clear the air with the government on planned burns last week, raising concerns of devastating smoke damage to the region’s wines. Prominent winemakers and industry representatives met with Victorian Opposition Leader Matthew Guy, Eildon MP Cindy McLeish and Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe last week to try and campaign for a change to planned burning schedules. The issue with the burns, according to the winemakers, is that Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) planned burning and VicForests’ coupe regeneration burns during the key wine-growing and harvesting season results in smoke tainting wine grapes. Wine Yarra Valley CEO Richard Howden told the politicians that there needed to be more flexibility with planned burns, to avoid damage to wineries. “There seems to be little flexibility and it’s the most sensitive time for us,” he said. The smoke taint cannot be detected without intensive tests on the fruit or until the wine is produced, by which time wineries could be hundreds of thousands of dollars out of pocket. Ms Fyffe, who has an extensive background in winemaking, said that smoke taint could “destroy a label completely” if a tainted wine was sold to the public. Pointing to burns conducted last week that left Healesville shrouded in smoke, the winemakers said the impact on tourism and the wine industry was potentially devastating.

Back, wine industry representatives, Dave Bicknell, Franco D’Anna, Mark O’Callaghan, Richard Howden and Mac Forbes met with, front, Eildon MP Cindy McLeish, Opposition Leader Matthew Guy, Picture: JESSE GRAHAM and Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe last week in Healesville. 137128 Mr Guy appeared sympathetic to the winemakers’ concerns and said at the meeting that the current burning schedule seemed “insensitive” to wineries and to tourists visiting the area around Easter. “Insensitive is probably the most polite way of putting it,” he said. He said that all burns should be halted for a week on either side of the Easter long weekend, to minimise the smoke deterring tourists or blanketing the region. Environment, Climate Change and Water Minister Lisa Neville told

the Mail that a balance needed to be struck between the burns and the wine industry. “Ultimately, these decisions aren’t made by politicians, but are made by the Chief Fire Officers who assess the risk, current weather conditions and the need for them to occur,” she said. “I’ve asked the department to work with the wine industry to reduce impacts of smoke on the industry and we will continue these discussions with the industry.” In response to questions from the

Mail, DELWP and VicForests issued a joint statement and said the best conditions for burning tended to be in autumn - when wine grapes ripened and were due to be harvested. “DELWP is committed to engaging with vignerons regarding their harvest periods and, whenever possible, will try to incorporate this into their burning scheduling,” the statement said. Environmental groups have also raised concerns about the smoke caused by planned burns. For the full story, see next week’s Mail.

THE MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT

PROUDLY AUSTRALIAN OWNED & INDEPENDENT

AS A regular cyclist around the Yarra Ranges, and a father of kids who ride bikes, I fully support the proposed one to one and a half metre passing laws. It amazes me the RACV and Cindy McLeish are against the sensible amendment to protect the most vulnerable road-users. The current laws are highly subjective, which makes them practically useless, while the proposed laws give people a concrete minimum distance drivers can visualise as they come up behind bikes. With a multitude of road hazards to swerve around like potholes, broken glass and car doors opening, kids who just naturally wobble, and with drivers who may misjudge their vehicle width, it’s critical that cyclists have a safety buffer around them - as it is always them who comes off second best. Most car drivers around Healesville are very courteous and provide a good buffer already (thankyou), but there is a very small minority who seem to enjoy terrorising cyclists by driving as close as possible, their games literally playing with the lives of others. Cyclists are legitimate road users, but need laws such as these to provide a minimum protection to the road users who have no protection in the case of a crash. If laws such as minimum passing distance can be promoted with existing laws, such as it being legal to ride two abreast, hopefully it will make it safer and more enjoyable for this great recreation activity and commuting option enjoyed by thousands around the state. David Blair, Healesville.

niture, two dragster bikes taken, a Lister diesel generator, cars, and many more antiques? We were shown no quotes; no permit was shown to us for the demolition. I rang the planning department in my name requesting a copy of a permit for demolition; I was told a permit wasn’t needed. I rang back five minutes later, under an assumed name, and was told, yes, you do need a permit to demolish. Where is it? As for health and safety, foam, treated pine, and fibreglass were burnt, under order from your council people. A lot of people are under the impression we built the shed on someone else’s property. We did not. We will not give up until this great injustice is put right. Maria McCarthy, you have never been to our property. You have no idea what has been done to us and you don’t care. We live on nine acres in the bush; we weren’t hurting anyone else with our lifestyle. Sometimes, due to hardship, the rules could be bent a little. Stop thinking of us as a problem. Treat us like human beings; we lost more than valuables, we have lost faith in the council. You should be ashamed. Thank you, again, Fiona McAllister, for your support. This includes habitat restoration in Yellingbo ($640,000) and in the Coranderrk bushland ($1,104,000), establishing a second wild population of both animals at Haining Farm ($400,000), creating a facility to train threatened species in predator avoidance ($30,000 initially) and to create a captive insurance population of lowland Leadbeater’s possums at the sanctuary ($129,806 per annum), among other plans. Ms Lowry said the lowland Leadbeater’s possum in Yellingbo was being focused on, due to its extremely low numbers in the wild and current uncertainty about the central highlands species’ habitat in

She said the walk also represented the journey into the future as Coranderrk is to be restored as a living place of belonging where everyone, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, will be welcome. The walkers were welcomed to Coranderrk by Wurundjeri

Elder, Allan Wandin and invited to take part in informal discussions and look over the displays. Ms Collins said the day was relaxed and informal and noted one of the highlights as the opportunity for people to spend time together on Coranderrk. She also thanked Victoria Police Aboriginal Liaison Officer, Belinda Dawson, and Healesville police who kept the walkers safe on their journey.

the Toolangi State Forest. “We have a criteria to determine which species we work with, and we decided to focus on that population because it’s the most likely to go extinct,” she said. Other key species in the plan include the eastern barred bandicoot, which is currently extinct in the wild, the mountain pygmy possum and the orange-bellied parrot. Ms Lowry said that captive breeding was not the only answer to saving the animals, and that some projects include training Maremma dogs and using drones to inspect feralproof fencing for the bandicoots. The Federal Government is currently reviewing the classification for the Leadbeater’s possum - the species is currently endangered, but is proposed to have its classification upgraded to critically endangered. MORE than 80 people took part in the third Annual Walk to Coranderrk, commemorating the trek over the Great Divide by Aboriginal people in 1863. The walk, on Saturday, 28 March, started at Commemoration Park in Healesville with the Djirri Djirri Dancers performing traditional dances and a brief talk on the history behind the walk. The five kilometre walk through Healesville to Coranderrk Station in Barak Lane, commemorates the trek made by Wurundjeri elders William Barak, Simon Wonga and others during early 1863 as they searched for a permanent home for their people. The 40-strong group came from Acheron, over the Black Spur, to the Watts River and selected land at the junction of the Yarra River and Coranderrk Creek, now Badger Creek. Wurundjeri descendent, Brooke Collins said the walk acknowledged and honoured the quest of Indigenous people to find a place of their own. “An important aspect about this year’s walk is that even though we are focusing on Cor-

THEY say you can’t put a price on a life, but Zoos Victoria and the Healesville Sanctuary did just that last month, putting out a $30 million plan that could make the difference between survival and extinction. Zoos Victoria released its 2014-’19 Wildlife Conservation Master Plan late last month, detailing $30 million in plans and programs it aims to run in the next five years to stop 20 native species from going extinct. Yellingbo’s helmeted honeyeaters (Heho) and lowland Leadbeater’s possums are two of the species in the plan that will potentially have their slide towards extinction reversed if the plan is successful. The plan was launched to Healesville Sanctuary staff on Wednesday 25 March, when Zoos Victoria’s Director of Wildlife Conservation and Science, Rachel Lowry, came to the sanctuary with CEO, Jenny Gray. Ms Lowry, who wrote the plan, said that Zoos Victoria would contribute at least $10 million towards the plan, but needed the support of government, private donors and residents to rally up the funds to save the animals. “It’s a costed plan because we know we can’t do it on our own and we are going to need people to help and support us,” she said. “It’s not intended to be a document for any one part of

The team at Holmwood Aged Care revel in making each day for the residents just that little bit extra special, so when two horses from the acclaimed Gallipoli television series visited, they knew they were onto a winner. The event was kindly donated by Le Pine Funerals here in Healesville. Having been part of the community for nearly 40 years, Holmwood Aged Care has a proud history of providing a renowned level of service to their residents, while maintaining their focus on great accommodation and exceptional care. While the team puts a lot of effort into their social activities program, they were especially

proud of securing this opportunity for residents. After all, there’s a reason Holmwood Aged Care is known for being a home away from home. Gallipoli, the seven-part Australian TV mini-series, was telecast on the Nine Network this year and also marked the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign. The visit gave residents the opportunity to interact with the famous horses and help to make the residents really feel at home. After all, there’s no better mix than a couple of horses and Holmwood Aged Care’s semi-rural setting located in the Healesville township. Of course, this occasion brought back many memories for certain residents who have strong ties to The Gallipoli Campaign that took place from 1915 to 1916.

Resident Jean Anderson meets some animal celebrities who popped in at the aged care facility. One of whom is Alma Hunter, who’s knitting 100 red poppies to pay her respects to the brave soldiers who fought in

Gallipoli. Ms Hunter’s dedication to her knitting has been spurred on and encouraged by Holmwood’s regular activity

sessions that include arts and crafts on a regular basis. For a tour of Holmwood Aged Care, and for further in-

formation, contact Holmwood Aged Care, 17-19 Lalors Road, Healesville, or phone 5962 4321.

Aurrum offers a friendly, supportive environment in which the residents can enjoy a great lifestyle.

The finest of food fare at home By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM YOU may be surprised to learn that some of the best food in the valley isn’t served up at a restaurant. Aurrum aged care facility recently announced a partnership with Spotless Group and Melbourne chef and writer Karen Martini to bring the highest quality food to the centre. Ms Martini has also been announced as the food ambassador at Aurrum.

Kathleen Collings, general manager of Aurrum Healesville said the innovative menu range was designed to cater to the tastes of residents. “We are excited to introduce this new dining experience to the Yarra Valley at Aurrum Healesville, to a community that has embraced high quality food,” she said. Some of the delicious dishes that will be served up to residents include

a winter minestrone; lamb shanks braised with beer, honey and oregano; filo pie with greens, ricotta, fetta and pumpkin seeds; chicken, leek and mushroom pie; and rigatoni bolognaise with peas and basil. Ms Martini said she hoped some of her favourite home-cooked dishes would provide a feeling of warmth and familiarity. “My tuna orecchiette is inspired by

the classic tuna-bake,” she said. “And my lamb shoulder dish is cooked so that the meat falls off the bone and wrapped in my home-made pita bread with yoghurt and cucumber provides a hands-on convivial dish that our residents can share together or with their family for special celebration events.” The partnership was trialled with great success for the months leading up to the announcement.

Aurrum has five aged care facilities in Victoria and New South Wales, offering over 600 beds with another 150 currently under construction. The care provider is built around a core philosophy of delivering clinical care excellence for resident and families. Aurrum Healesville is located at 27 Smith Street, Healesville. All hi-tech in practice THE staff at A Grade Medical in Lilydale pride themselves on doing things differently. Specialising in providing services to women, the elderly and the working community, the family practice is looking forward to opening its doors to the public in the last week of April. Offering bulk billing, professional doctors and a convenient location, the clinic has developed a strategy in delivering medical attention to diverse sectors of the community. Practice principal Shaun Perera says that the practice is working to set itself apart from other healthcare providers in the area. “Our main difference is that we will come to you - our practice will give special attention to the needs of the working community and elderly in the area,” he said. The clinic is running a number of health campaigns to endeavour to improve the health of the community. Their digital advertising strategy will be the first in Australia, using LCD screens facing the street to attract passers-by. Operating with the slogan “the advanced healthcare clinic,” the practice is also running a campaign to prompt clients on their monthly, quarterly and yearly health checks as well as providing health updates.

The focus of the practice is to provide a different service to other competitive GP practices around the area and offer similar or better services. While patients wait for their appointments, they’ll be able to take advantage of the free wifi offered by the clinic or to view a digital screen informing visitors of upcoming local events. With a user friendly website and advanced medical technology integrated, the practice certainly lives up to its name as a high-quality clinic. Mr Perera said the clinic was proud to be a part of the local community. “Lilydale is a picturesque area and the people are friendly and humble,” he said. “I am very proud to say that our first centre will be in Lilydale, and there are many more to come.” Coming from diverse backgrounds, the practice’s friendly and professional staff have many years of experience and a wealth of knowledge. The practice has also gained support from Medicare Local. A Grade Medical is located at 8 William Street East, Lilydale. The practice may be contacted on 9735 4442 or agrademedlilydale@outlook.com

Natural hearing provides maintenance of lifestyle for the people of Yarra Valley communities, through individually tailored hearing solutions. Through their business, they support the local community while creating hearing awareness through free hearing tests on an annual basis. Natural Hearing supplies many professional services, which include hearing tests, and tinnitus assessment and management. They offer free trials of worldleading digital hearing aids, which are tailored to each individual, as well as pre-employment hearing tests. The organisation is a contracted provider with Worksafe Victoria and can offer advice and referral to a doctor when required. The business prides itself on its presence five days a week, where the people of the Yarra Valley are most welcome to attend, upon appointment. Makin’ quite a Ruckus By KATH GANNAWAY THEY kick it up, and people far and wide love it. Yarra Valley band ‘Ruckus’ have been favourites on the local country rock scene for over a decade, but it’s not only the locals who love their music ... and their words. Their latest album ‘Love This Country’ is rating well with the title single entering the Australian top 40 Country charts at No 26. The band has been hitting the high notes on a number of fronts, including blitzing the Canberra Country Music, Blues and Root Awards coming away with eight awards. ‘Love this Country’ got Best Country Album, and there were seven more ‘bests’ to follow - Engineering and Production, Album Cover Artwork, Contemporary Country, Traditional Country, Country Rock, Honky Tonk

and Alternate Country. Three of their songs also made it into the finals of the Australian Songwriters Association and they made it into the top 10 in the country music section of ‘Songs Alive’ in March. Founding band member Mick Abrey says the new album has seven original songs and four covers. Mick said he and the other band members Barry Tiplady, Roly Kretchmar, Craig Nichols, and Penelope Somerville were thrilled when they heard about their success in Canberra. “We actually found out beforehand with a call saying we’d better get up there because we’d just about cleaned up,” Mick said. “It was awesome, but we were doing the Lilydale Show and didn’t want to let them down, so we couldn’t go up ourselves to collect the awards.” Apart from their music, the band

has a reputation for reliability and for their support of local events and charities. “If we think something is worthwhile, we will try to help out as much as possible,” Mick said. The Easter fund-raiser at Warburton, held over the weekend, is a good example with Ruckus firm favourites and a definite drawcard. Asked about favourite songs, Mick didn’t hesitate. “I think for the audience, it’s ‘We Are Australian’,” he said. “We get into trouble if we don’t play that one. “I love them all,” he added, dodging the question of a personal favourite. “We all really enjoy playing new, original stuff. “The original material means a lot to us.” There’s a special mention, however, for ‘Devil Pub’, a parody of ‘The Devil

Ruckus, from left, Barry Tiplady, Penny Somerville, Mick Abrey, Roly Kretchmar and Craig Nichols. Went Down To Georgia’ that trades the fiddle contest for a drinking contest, and always leaves the audience on a high. “It’s a favourite to finish with ...

Big Eyes (M) Starring: Amy Adams, Christoph Waltz, Danny Huston, Krysten Ritter BIG Eyes is a carefully-crafted portrait of a heartbreaking art scandal and a fantastic redemption for director Tim Burton. The film is based on the life of painter Margaret Keane (Amy Adams), whose husband Walter (Christoph Waltz) took credit for her world-famous paintings for over a decade. Amy Adams (in the role that earned her a Golden Globe) is riveting as Margaret Keane. She superbly conveys the melancholy that defined Margaret’s work, and her despair and inner conflict at her husband’s deception is palpable.

’S NE IE R U V LBOT MOES E M BES RIC P

Margaret is trapped in a lie she is partially complicit in, and her journey of mustering up the courage to break free is an enthralling display of subtle power. Christoph Waltz is one of the best, most versatile actors of his generation, and his persona as Walter can best

be described as poisonously charming. For the past decade or more, Tim Burton has been (with some exceptions) creatively stagnant, endlessly re-hashing and wearing out his quirky style. But Big Eyes marks his return to Big Fishlevel clarity. Big Eyes is steady, precise, poignant, very funny in the right places and appealingly stylised, with the fanciful flourishes complementing the film’s artistic focus (rather than overwhelming everything, like in Alice in Wonderland or Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). Absorbing, tense and impeccably acted, Big Eyes is one of the most polished biopics in several years. - Seth Hynes

Even triplets did their bit By KATH GANNAWAY HEALESVILLE was like most other towns around Australia in 1915, with almost everyone stepping up to support the war effort. Age was no barrier, as the Ross triplets found. The girls, Mena, Gwendoline Parker and Jean, were born on 25 March, 1915, and before you could say “watch the dicky bird” they were doing their bit, charming passers-by who were happy to buy a photo of the cute threesome to help our soldiers overseas. Gwendoline’s daughter, Annette (Heritage) Hill, has delightful memories of the girls who went to school at Healesville State School and grew into beautiful young women, married and raised their own families. The girls were born in a house in Nicholson Street, in the ‘CBD’ of a town that was barely 50 years old. The house was around where Main Street Quality Butchers is now, and their parents, Lachlan and Madge Ross were expecting two, not three! “They had to borrow a neighbour’s clothes basket when triplets arrived, and someone made them a pram, which is in one of the photos,” Annette said. “The girls were placed in the pram, on show in the main street, and photos were sold for sixpence to raise money for the war effort. “They were gorgeous, dressed in broderie anglaise petticoats and dresses which were boiled in a copper out-

side and cold starched and ironed dry,” said Annette retelling stories handed down through the family. The stories paint a vivid picture of hard times in the lead-up to the war, and during the war. “Lachlan was a saddler whose shop was part of what is now the Yarra Valley Clinic waiting room,” she said.

“Business owners could wait years to be paid with their families being provided with whatever they needed, and that’s how they came by the pram.” Mena married Bill Marshall and they had two children, Jean married Ern Hogg and they also had two children.

Gwendoline Parker married Frank Heritage and their three children were Annette and brothers Robert (Robbie) and Keith. Among the many stories of the triplets is another connection with the war. “Mena’s name was Mena Mary and she was named after the camp that Nanna Ross’s brother was stationed at

while serving in Egypt,” Annette explained. “When he found out he was not impressed. It was a hellhole.” The Ross triplets were undoubtedly the town’s littlest heroes when it came to the war effort, and that’s a nice thing to reflect upon in such a doubly-special centenary year.

ANIMAL Aid is a not-for-profit animal welfare organisation with shelters in Coldstream, Bairnsdale and Sale. To complement their welfare work, they also have pet dog training, a commercial boarding facility, veterinary clinic and grooming salon. All profits from these businesses are directed back to assist animals in need. Animal Aid operates as an open-door shelter and provides refuge and the chance to find a new home to homeless pets. Their primary aim is to responsibly re-home as many pets as they can. Debra Boland said the business aimed to please. “Animal Aid is an organisation that chooses to be great, not big,” she said. “We aim to provide service that supports all aspect of pet ownership. “We have all the basic items that a pet owner may require.” Ms Boland said the biggest attraction was the animals that were available for adoption. “They have found themselves here for many reasons and all have an individual story,” she said. “They come in all shapes, species and sizes. “Most are cats and dogs, but we also have rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, sheep, pigs, poultry and, occasionally, exotic birds.” Animal Aid prides itself on encouraging the community to be more responsible in relation to pet ownership. This includes promoting

financial contributions, they are able to help about 6000 pets each year. The business has 35 part time and full time staff, with a 350-strong volunteer crew. For details contact 9739 0300, visit www.aminalaid.org. au or email enquiries@animalaid.org.au

 Connecting people with local sport…

Cars are mountain up By KATH GANNAWAY JACQUELINE and Greg Sheppard have pulled off another spectacular Mountain District Car and Bike Show at the Healesville Sporting Complex. The couple are the inspiration and the muscle behind the show which has been running for eight years and raised tens of thousands of dollars for local charities. Hundreds of cars and bikes come from all around Yarra Ranges and beyond each year for the show which has been a successful part of Healesville’s summer events calendar for several years. This year was no different, with hot rods and chromed-up bikes lining up on Sunday, 22 March with classics and vintage beauties. Yarra Valley enthusiasts held their own in the head-turning stakes with Rob Holland’s 1936 Chev Master 6 wheel equipped speedster a rare treat for those who know their cars; and there

William Monk from Yarra Junction is comfortable behind the wheel of his 1966 left-hand drive Ford F100. 136991 were a few of those. Mr Holland, from Healesville, said it was probably unique. “They made three for the 1936 Melbourne to Sydney Rally and we believe this is the only one left,” he said. William Monk from Yarra Junction built his 1966 American Ford F100 from the ground up. Mr Monk said he bought it from a chap in Woori Yallock

who brought two of them out to Australia. “I’ve built it from the ground up and everything on the vehicle is as it was when it was brand-new in America,” he said. Ms Sheppard said the aim of the show was to raise money and support community groups, but there’s added benefits for Healesville with the show providing a great family day for locals, and showcasing the town to car enthusiasts from all around the state.
