From grim to gym have been revealed with works on a huge gymnasium to commence in the coming weeks. It is expected the facility will be completed later this year, creating about 20 new jobs once finished. President of the Cranbourne Turf Club Neil Bainbridge and Committee of Management president Geoff Whiffin have both said how pleased they are with the outcome. Mr Bainbridge, who is also a part of the recreation reserve committee, said the committee of management called for expressions of

He said this developer, which will be revealed in the next few weeks, was the sole candidate. “We think it will be a very good development and return what was once a great community asset,” he said. “We were really pleased when they came forward and put together a really positive proposal.” Mr Whiffin said he will be pleased to see it returned to its former glory. “The Cranbourne Racing Centre
and Recreation Reserve Committee of Management are delighted that the facility will undergo a major revamp so it can again be utilised by the local community,” he said. “It’s an important site for many residents of Cranbourne who enjoyed its usage as the former heated pool centre and I’m sure this announcement will be welcomed by many who wanted this returned for community use.” Mr Bainbridge said more details will follow the announcement, in-

Mr Whiffin said the 24 hour fitness centre will be a “great fit” for the Cranbourne Racing Precinct. “It will be beneficial to the likes of jockeys, track riders and other industry participants in supporting their racing and training activities, as well as the wider community,” he said. “The racing precinct is an important part of the Cranbourne community and this new facility will only further enhance and support it.”

Bin fire witnesses sought by police
Call for change By BRIDGET SCOTT A CRANBOURNE mother has called for a change in disability facilities at shopping centres as she admitted she is forced to change her six-year-old daughter on the floor. Niki Harrison said she had lived and shopped in Cranbourne all her life, but said shopping was made much more difficult as she struggled to find anywhere where she could appropriately change her young daughter Abby. Ms Harrison said she was deterred from shopping locally because the only centre she had found where she could change Abby was at Fountain Gate in Narre Warren. “Why should I have to shop at Fountain Gate just so I can change my daughter?” she said. “I have lived in Cranbourne all my life and shopped here all my life.” Ms Harrison said she thought with the new developments at Cranbourne Park there would be adequate changing facilities for disabled children but was proved wrong. “With the new part of the centre, I thought surely they would cater for us,” she said.
A spokesperson from Cranbourne Park said the centre management team had met with Ms Harrison to better understand the needs of her and her child. “The team are working with Ms Harrison to review our facilities and how we can improve our existing disabled facilities,“ they said. “Cranbourne Park caters for disabled customers with three disabled toilets, more than 40 disabled car parks and two lifts.“ City of Casey Manager for Building Services James Rouse said the council did not have any jurisdiction over change facilities in private centres. “Buildings, such as shopping centres, require a building permit which is issued by a private building surveyor who is responsible for ensuring the building meets regulations,” he said. However, he suggested that the council’s Lynbrook Community Centre, which is due to open later this month, is an example of an “accessible and inclusive community facility” which does include an adult change table and hoist. Ms Harrison said she was concerned given her daughter would
POLICE have called for people who may have information on a small bin fire in Cranbourne last week to come forward. She said she had made contact with management at Cranbourne Park and said the change room there was big enough and that they simply needed a high-low bed on the wall to pull out. “I am happy to take my own sling with me,” she said.
“I just want to know I can change her.” Ms Harrison said there had been occasions where she had had to leave Abby in her dirty nappy because she had been unable to change her. Ms Harrison posted a video on her Facebook page of how she is forced to change her daughter, which now has more than 42,000 views and about 1200 shares.
Heart attack emergency at Casey RACE By BRIDGET SCOTT A 50-YEAR-OLD man with a previous medical condition remains in a critical condition after he suffered a heart attack while swimming laps at Casey RACE on Monday morning. It is understood that the Lynbrook man, who it’s believed is a regular at the aquatic centre, was seen to be struggling by someone when he was in the pool around 10am on Monday 6 April. Life savers on duty were notified and by the time they reached the man he was underwater. A defibrillator was then used and staff commenced CPR on the man and continued this until paramedics and CFA crews arrived and took over. Acting Senior Sergeant at Cranbourne Police Station Adam Mottershead said it was 21 minutes before they got a response from the man. He said the man was then taken by ambulance to Monash Medical Centre in Clayton where the News believes he still remains in the Intensive Care Unit in a critical condition and is under sedation. Acting Sen Sgt Mottershead commended the staff at Casey RACE for their quick actions. “Without the initial action by staff at the centre and their efforts, there is no way that the male would have had any chance of surviv- A 50-year-old man remains in hospital after he suffered a heart attack while swimming at Picture: GARY SISSONS Casey RACE on Monday. 137342 ing,” he said.
PARTS of a black ‘monkey bike’ were left behind near the scene of a crime in Narre Warren on Monday. A boy was seen riding a bike near Heatherlea Crescent where a grass fire occurred around 4.10pm on Monday 6 April. It is believed the bike broke as parts of it were left behind. Police have deemed the fire, which burnt a 12 by 25 metres swath of land, as suspicious. Police have said the area is a common meeting place for youths and there may have been some drug taking activity. Anyone with more information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

There’s so many reasons to ride By BRIDGET SCOTT IF ANYBODY has reason to take part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, it’s Leigh Ryan. The Cranbourne North teen will tackle the trek once again, with aims to raise much-needed funds to help those suffering, including his mother Tracey who has terminal cancer. Leigh said his main reason for completing such an event was to remind those suffering that there was support out there. “I’m not an academic but I
am a sportsman,” he said. “This way I can do what I love and raise money at the same time.” Leigh attends Sports Education Development Australia (SEDA) and last year lost a classmate, Jayden, to osteosarcoma - Leigh said the 17-yearold was an inspiration and kept fighting to his last breath. Leigh will ride in honour of Jayden, as well as his Aunty Jo, and great family friend Sarah Jane, who both lost their lives to cancer, as well as for his mother.
He said while she had been diagnosed as terminal, she didn’t let this stop her. Leigh will ride with a classmate, a teacher, Jayden’s father and possibly others on 25 October. He said he had decided to train more this year than last year for the 200-kilometre ride throughout country Victoria. If you would like to donate to Leigh, visit http://ml15. conquercancer.org.au/site/ TR/Events/Melbourne2015? px=1446422&pg=personal& fr_id=119

EIGHTEEN years ago Carol Friday guessed Leanne Smith’s newborn son would grow to be six foot four. With the now 18-year-old Jake clocking in at six foot five, Carol wasn’t far off. As a maternal health nurse for the City of Casey patrolling Berwick’s relatively new Timbarra Estate in a caravan during the late ’90s, the new mothers on the block came to rely on Carol’s parenting advice and continually trusted her instincts. “Babies don’t come with a rule book and we were all brand-new mums back then, even second or third time mums were seeing her too,” Leanne, now living in Clyde, said. “When you’re a brand-new mum, you’re not sure if anything you’re doing is right but Carol was always available, she always cared. “The world has lost a really nice lady, who touched many, many lives. “All of our thoughts go out to her family.” Last month Carol, 68, and her 29-year-old son Greig, perished when Germanwings Flight 9525 travelling from Barcelona to Dusseldorf went down in the French Alps. There were no survivors among the 150 passengers and crew. It’s believed German co-pilot Andreas Lubitz, 28, was left in sole control of the plane after the captain left the cockpit, refusing to re-open the door and allegedly initiating the plane’s descent. Carol, a talented artist, and her son, a mechanical engineer, had been enjoying a few weeks’ holiday together before Greig began work in Europe.

Because it’s someone I did know, it makes it all the more real. “She was just a lovely lady. There will be so many mums in the Casey area that knew her; she affected a lot of people’s lives in an extremely good way.”
A minute’s silence was held for Carol and Greig on Tuesday night at the City of Casey’s fortnightly council meeting. Mayor Mick Morland said council’s thoughts were with the Friday family. Upon hearing of the tragedy, Leanne dug out her son’s yellow “baby book”, a record of Jake’s weight and height written down just after he was born. Carol Friday’s name is inscribed inside the cover.

JOHN Fabian watched his son Luke accept the trophy for best original EH Holden on his behalf at last year’s Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills All Holden Car Show. The Blind Bight man suffered a fatal heart attack just one week later. Luke, 12, will present the same award to this year’s winner on Sunday 12 April. Berwick man Steve Marsden, who’ll be showing his FX Holden at the event, organised the tribute. “Luke’s rapt, he’s really looking forward to it,” he said. “It’ll mean the world to him. “He’s had a hard year and a half. He lost his mum about a year beforehand. She passed away from breast cancer. “We’ve tried to do what we can for him.” Mr Marsden said John was very well known in the car scene. “He owned a big collection of EHs so he was in several different car clubs and went to a lot of shows,” he said. Luke shares his dad’s passion. “I think he’s probably the smartest 11-year-old I’ve ever met,” Mr Marsden said. “He’s taught me things about cars I’ve never known. “He learned everything from his dad. He used to do all the polishing for his dad before all the car shows. He’d get all the cars cleaned and ready for him. “I’m sure he can’t wait to work on the cars and drive them himself on day. “I took him for a drive in the FX a few nights ago and he was so happy because he used to go out every
weekend with his dad.” The Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills event raises funds for aid, including the club’s flagship project Disaster Aid Australia. They create survival packs complete with a tent, blankets and other items needed by people after a major disaster. The 7th Annual Dandenong Valley All Holden Street Car Show will be held from 9am to 3pm on Sunday 12 April at Greaves Reserve, Bennet Street, Dandenong. Entry is $5 for adults and is free for children aged under 16 years. There’ll be activities for children, food vendors and more.

OFTEN the first port of call for anyone in trouble is to seek out a GP. It’s for this reason mental health nurse Lyndsay Coutet felt it was imperative the Hallam Medical Group provide free drug and alcohol support workshops for the Casey community. The ‘Stepping Up’ workshops will start next week for the second year, providing not just addicts with the much-needed support they need, but also their families and friends. Mr Coutet said last year’s Stepping Up workshops at Hallam Medical Group were the first that Family Drug Support facilitator Michael Miller had held at a medical clinic. A fact Mr Coutet struggled to believe. “Don’t forget, the first port of call for people is the GP,” Mr Coutet said. “When we are worried about something we talk to a GP, so we thought that would be a good thing to do, to bring the program here. “Since we started the program, people have been more educated and less stressed.”
Mental health nurse Lyndsay Coutet hopes this month's Stepping Up drug counselling workshops held in Casey help highlight to the Picture: ROB CAREW community that help is out there. 137260 There are three Stepping Up workshops being run this month in Casey, covering general information on alcohol and drugs, stages of change for users and carers, and strategies on how to communicate with someone under the influence of
alcohol or drugs. Mr Coutet - who also coordinates the Vision of Hope counselling program for carers of drug users -said the Stepping Up workshops were aimed at showing new people in Casey that help was out there if one
is willing to find it. And in most cases, Mr Coutet said, they are. “A lot of people don’t know anything about this… they don’t know we exist here,” he said “Sometimes they want to talk about it and they don’t know where to go.” The Stepping Up sessions will be held on 13, 20 and 27 April from 6.30pm to 9pm at the Hallam Medical Group - 212 Princes Highway, Hallam. “This is for people to have an understanding of their loved one who is taking drugs or alcohol, because a lot of the time we don’t know how to communicate with users,” he said. “Stepping Up is for users and loved ones of users… we want to target the new community, new people… we want to educate the community. “There’s a lot of taboos about these things and there shouldn’t be. “At least when you come here, everything is confidential.” For more information, contact Lyndsay Coutet on 9796 5400.

Stables well on course THE construction of the Cranbourne Turf Club's on-site stabling project is well on track after GG Engineering was appointed as its developers. The six-million dollar project will take place at the Cranbourne Training Complex and be home to around 240 horses. Cranbourne Turf Club president Neil Bainbridge held high hopes that horses will occupy the stables built during stage one by spring this year. The on-course stables will consist of five complexes, catering for between 40-60 horses each. Each stable site will have separate tie-up stalls as well as a mezzanine floor with office
space and a viewing balcony overlooking the track. Each site will also include tack rooms, sand rolls, feed stores, medical and bathroom facilities as well as an area for horse walkers to be installed. Mr Bainbridge said entering into this contract was a positive step forward. “After many months of planning and work behind the scene, the club is thrilled to be taking this significant step forward in this exciting project for the Cranbourne racing precinct,” he said. “On-course stabling has been envisioned for the Cranbourne Training Complex for
many years to ensure we can best grow and support the local racing industry.” He said the club looked forward to working with GG Engineering and said the stabling project would be an integral part of the Cranbourne Training Complex - the largest thoroughbred training facility in Australia. “This project will provide a significant boost to trainers looking to relocate on course,” he said. “The demand for on-course stabling at Cranbourne is high, and we are thrilled that as a club we are on the path to delivering just that.”

Make reserve playground plea By BRIDGET SCOTT A GROUP of Tooradin parents have called for a playground to be created on a vacant plot of land near their estate, as children have resorted to playing on the streets. The reserve, located on the corner of Sambur Road and Chellamah Close, currently has a footpath through the middle as well as a park bench. Mother-of-one Melinda Lenders, along with Kate Vander Der Heyden are spearheading the action and lobbying council for a new playground. Ms Lenders said there were “no facilities” on their side of the highway. “This estate is mostly families with young kids,” she said.
“The problem for us is that one of the playgrounds is on the foreshore, and that is frequented more by tourists.” “It’s hard to get a park.” Ms Lenders said there was nothing in good walking distance and said she believed council had no plans for the land at this stage. City of Casey manager for Sport and Leisure Richard Amon said that council’s Playground Strategy guided the prioritisation of upgrades and new playgrounds across the municipality. However, he agreed that there is some need for a playground in the area in question. “Considering the distance and major road barriers to the nearest playground from the residential area around Sambur Road, there is some merit
for the development of a local level playground at the vacant site in question,” he said. “Further planning and scoping is required before this particular location can be considered for inclusion in Council’s Playground Strategy and funding program.” Ms Lenders, who has lived in Tooradin since 2008, said there needed to be more entertainment for local children. “Because of the lack (of playgrounds) children are often playing on the street,” she said. “There are often mini skate ramps and basketball rings on the roads, which is quite dangerous for kids.” The group has begun a petition with 100 signatories and also written to council to voice their concerns.

LAST CHANCE TO BUY NEW UNITS AT SAFFRON GROVE BE QUICK TO GRAB A BARGAIN Construction not fully completed

Dust woes By BRIDGET SCOTT A CLYDE North resident who feels suffocated from the dust along his road has put his foot down. Michael Bohmer has lived along McCormacks Road for 15 years and said dust had become a major issue for his family. With dust suppressants now a thing of the past, he said the issues caused were endless. “Our house is so close to the road, so it cops the full brunt,” he said. “My wife washes our clothes at her mother’s house during the summer, and the dust builds up on the roof and we end up drinking it,” he said.
Mr Bohmer said since the Cardinia Shire Council took over the roads from the City of Casey in 2005, there have been no dust suppressants or other measures implemented to help curb the dust problem. “The core of my argument is that it’s a program that Casey supplies and we are Casey ratepayers, yet we miss out because it’s under Cardinia jurisdiction.” The fed-up resident said last year he found the cost of dust suppressants and deducted it out of his rates. The Casey ratepayer said he now had to book it in with Cardinia to have dust suppressants issued, and last year he sent the receipt to the City of
Casey.“Nothing has been done and it won’t be resolved,” he said. “I want them to actually do something.” Cardinia Shire Council Operations co-ordinator Mark Howard said council had not applied dust suppressants to this road during the period since it took over, as this road did not meet council's criteria for this program. “Although council is not aware of any major dust issues on this road, it is currently considering some options,” he said. Mr Bohmer said he could barely entertain guests when they came over and said the “dust affects our lives.”

A search for WWI artefacts By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A WELL-RESPECTED group of Casey artists is looking for community help as it prepares for its special Anzac Centenary exhibition later this year. Provenance Artists Inc, a not-for-profit group of local artists, was awarded the $22,605 grant in February to help put together its Holt Anzac Centenary Fine Art Exhibition to be held in July. Passionate artist Calvin Bell has now called on residents from the Holt electorate to lend
any artefacts to the group that they may have of WWI, to be used as inspiration for paintings or even displayed at the exhibition. Holt MP Anthony Byrne helped push for the federal grant, with two others also approved for local organisations, including $3420 for the Cranbourne Combined Patchworkers, and $814 for the Saffron Grove Retirement Village in Hallam. The grant will see 30 artists given the ability to paint a range
of Anzac pieces for the exhibition, of which five will be student artists, five will be hobby artists, 10 will be emerging artists and 10 will be established Provenance artists. The Holt Anzac Centenary Fine Art Exhibition will take place from 4 to 5 July at the Narre Warren Mechanics Institute Hall in Webb Street. Residents with WWI photos are encouraged to contact Provenance Artists secretary Rhonda Rawson on 9707 4286, or at randrrawson@bigpond.com.
Local artists Deborah Polman and Judy Owen are busy preparing for the Anzac Centenary Picture: GARY SISSONS Fine Art exhibition planned for later this year. 134723

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Panel shop beats the rest By BRIDGET SCOTT A CRANBOURNE panel beater was thrilled to be announced as a Peugot Approved Panel Repairer and said he hoped it would stand his business in good stead for further manufacturer approvals. Cranbourne Body Works was one of few repairers in Victoria to be chosen after a rigorous selection process. Panel beater and owner Kevin Slattery said the recognition means his 26-year-old company is getting support from manufacturers to ensure cars are properly repaired. Mr Slattery said he has seen the industry change enormously during his time. “Nowadays, people don’t want to see one single sign on their cars that there has been an

He said the technology in modern cars complicated and “not just anyone can fix them”. “The perfection that’s required for a car compared to 26 years ago is crazy,” he said. “Cars are getting complicated are all high tech - repairing
is not as simple as what it used to be.” Mr Slattery said his business has grown enormously since it started in a small factory along a dirt road in Cranbourne in 1988. “We have grown with Cranbourne,” he said.
Employment gets a shake up By LACHLAN MOORHEAD FIVE organisations from the La Trobe electorate were last week awarded lucrative Federal Government contracts to help people from the region find jobs. La Trobe MP Jason Wood last Wednesday announced these organisations had won the contracts ahead of the launch of the Government’s new ‘Jobactive’ program on 1 July. Mr Wood said Max Employment, Matchworks, AMES, Direct Recruitment Pty Ltd, and Job Prospects had been selected through a tender process to deliver one or more employment services in La Trobe. These services include Employment Providers, Work for the Dole co-ordinators, and New Enterprise Incentive Schemes. It’s understood the organisations were assessed on their ability to meet the needs of local job seekers, their past performance, and their management arrangements. The tender was conducted
by the Department of Employment in accordance with the Government’s procurement rules, and signed off by an external probity adviser. “The Coalition’s new Jobactive system will provide clearer incentives to ensure employment service providers are focused on better preparing job seekers to meet the needs of local employers and helping people to find and keep a job,” he said. “The new model includes wage subsidies for young job seekers, indigenous job seekers, the long term unemployed, the Restart subsidy for older workers as well as Relocation Assistance to help people move to take up a job. “There is also the Job Commitment Bonus to encourage young job seekers to stay in work and off welfare.” Mr Wood said the Work for the Dole service would be rolled out nationally to help job seekers to learn skills and stay active while looking for work.
“There will be new Work for the Dole co-ordinators working with local community organisations to identify activities and places. “The Government has also made changes to assist employment providers to deliver services on the ground. “This includes less red tape, the introduction of five-year contracts instead of three, a mid-contract price adjustment, larger employment regions to promote economies of scale, and an additional loading to support service delivery in regional Australia”. Local job seekers in the coming months will receive advice on which organisation will assist them with looking for work after 1 July 2015. In the meantime, job seekers are encouraged to work with their existing provider. For more information, visit the Employment Services website at www.employment.gov. au/employment-services-2015.

Class units selling fast KARIDIS Retirement Villages have been providing residents with convenient and friendly community living for six years, and new dwellings are selling fast at Saffron Grove in Hallam. The village has added 20 new spacious two and three-bedroom units to the established 76 in Saffron Grove. The boutique-style retirement village provides daily activities and includes a heated indoor spa and pool, billiard table and gym available for use between 6am to 11pm. The village is close to Fountain Gate shopping centre and allows for small pets, depending on the type, size and needs and has a bus stop at its door. They hold special functions such as Shrove Tuesday, Melbourne Cup Day
and hot cross buns for morning tea around Easter time. Village manager Jan Huggett said the beauty of Saffron Grove village was that there were enough activities to keep you involved and you could choose not to do anything as well. “We have a full range of activities, including cards, movie nights and bus trips for residents,” Ms Huggett said. “The village is compact and friendly, with very happy and settled residents and brand new units now available at very reasonable prices,” she said. The village takes pride in their residents’ happiness and tries to keep the maintenance levy as low as practical. Ms Huggett, who has been in the industry for more than 25 years, said
she loved it. “We have a great sales manager, Phil Glascott, who is very committed to seeing people make the right choices for the latter stage of their life,” she said. The master-planned community offers an established, safe and comfortable lifestyle with friendly neighbours and a community atmosphere. Ms Huggett said because the village was well established, new residents didn’t have to go through any teething problems to get the luxury of a new unit. The village will have an open day on Thursday 30 April from 10am to 2pm with a sausage sizzle and live band playing on the day. “I believe it is a wonderful option
Boutique-lifestyle village MOUNTAIN View Leongatha is a boutique-lifestyle village in the heart of South Gippsland, offering a stylish and vibrant community for the over 55s or semi-retired. Mountain View villas are new two or three-bedroom master built homes, offering single storey living, all with private rear gardens, for as little as $146,500 with no deferred management fees. Would-be residents may have money left over from the sale of their home to invest and create an additional income to supplement their pension. As anyone considering retirement living options knows, security, both financial and environmental, are of utmost importance. Also, the bonus is the ability to leave the villa to go on holiday, knowing someone else is maintaining the home. Low-maintenance, five star environmental rating with emergency on-call services offers immediate peace of mind. A bowling green, heated indoor pool and stylish residents’

With reduced living costs, more time and money available, residents can concentrate on the aspects of living that make them feel good about themselves. Whether it be bowling, golfing, boating or perhaps walking and cycling on the South Gippsland rail trail, there is plenty to do. Secure boat and caravan parking is also available on site. Leongatha is a town of 6000 people in the heart of South Gippsland. The town is a service centre for surrounding areas and has had a state-of-the-art hospital
upgrade, boasts two golf clubs, assorted shops and a cinema. Proximity to Melbourne and the Latrobe Valley, great public transport and natural clean air are other bonuses of this community. There’s plenty to explore locally, with an array of attractions, tourist sites and natural surroundings to discover. From the iconic wonder of Wilson’s Promontory National Park to the neighbouring towns of Koonwarra, Fish Creek and Meeniyan, not forgetting the magnificent coastline of Inverloch, Venus Bay and Kilcunda, the choices are endless - museums, gardens, award winning wineries and sampling artisan produce at local farmers’ markets to name a few. This is the place for residents to pursue their interests and an even better place to join friends and neighbours. TO say Andrew Bogut has come a long way since practising his ball skills as a youngster at his family’s Endeavour Hills home is arguably the biggest understatement in world sport at the moment. The milestones and records just continue to tumble for the Golden State Warriors’ defensive anchor, who passed Luc Longley’s record during the week for the most NBA games played by an Australian. Following the Warriors’ 107-92 loss on Sunday at the hands of Western Conference rivals and reigning NBA champs, the San Antonio Spurs, Bogut’s games tally now sits at 569 - two clear of Luc Longley, who won three consecutive championships from 1996 to 1998 as a pivotal member of Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls. And Bogut, who was the first overall pick by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2005 draft, is still only 30-years-old. He has battled through a series of freakish injuries over his career to date but he has still played at least 65 games (of a possible 82 regular season games) in six seasons so far. This season is set to become the seventh. Bogut, who measures in at 213 centimetres and 118 kilograms, or 7’0” and 260lbs in the old scale, is regarded by many as one of the best passing big men of his generation. He earned high praise earlier in the season from some of the most respected basketball pundits in the United States, who say that his increased role in Golden State under first-year coach Steve Kerr (a former team-mate of Longley’s) is a key factor behind the team’s success. The Warriors currently sit atop the brutally tough Western Conference with 63 wins and just 14 losses from their 77 games so far this season. Kirk Goldsberry, in an early-season article for the acclaimed ‘Grantland’ website started by ESPN journalist Bill Simmons, described just how enamoured Kerr is with Bogut’s passing game in particular. “In the pre-season, Kerr lauded Andrew
Andrew Bogut, pictured here with Noah, 7, on a visit back to Melbourne, has forged a reputation as one of the NBA’s best all-around big men. Bogut’s abilities as a passer and discussed how Bogut will help the new-look offense,” Goldsberry said, referring to an NBA.com story by Antonio Gonzalez in which Kerr was quoted as saying: “Andrew’s one of the best passing centres in the league. He’s one of the best I’ve ever seen, and so for us to get him the ball on the elbows as a dribble-handoff guy, backdoor-pass guy, that will be emphasised.” Golden State, led by MVP candidate Stephen Curry, will likely face either Russell Westbrook’s Oklahoma City Thunder, or Anthony Davis’ New Orleans Pelicans in the first round of this season’s playoffs.

WURUNDJERI spirit is alive within Beau Anthony. Anthony, 14, from Hampton Park, will take to the field as part of the Victorian/Tasmanian combined Kickstart Championships team - a team comprised of the states’ best 15-and-under Indigenous footballers. After an average match trying out for the team - held at North Melbourne Football Club’s amazing Arden Street facilities - Anthony was surprised to find he’d earned a place in the final 22-man squad that heads up to Queensland this week. “It means a lot to me,” Anthony said. “I didn’t think I was going to make it… don’t think I did a good job in the actual game when we played in the performance testing at North Melbourne.” After eight years playing football in the South East Juniors - for Hampton Park and now Narre North Foxes - the Dandenong region Kickstart representative will get the chance to take his talents to the next level as he represents the southern states - combined team. For Anthony, experienc-

footballers) and will be fun to be around them. Anthony wanted to thank his grandparents for their support and his coach Greg Brittain for helping take him to matches and training sessions. The KickStart squad heads to Cairns this week for the National Kickstart Championships from 10 to 15 April.

Can’t see the wood … for the tall timber By JARROD POTTER TAC CUP - Round 3 DANDENONG STINGRAYS v GEELONG FALCONS COMPLETING a full 180 turnaround from last week’s horror TAC Cup season start, Dandenong overcame some first-quarter gremlins to comfortable knock off Geelong by 34 points. With the ground abuzz - with full stands and car parks around Shepley Oval on Easter Saturday - all eyes were directed to a back-and-forth opening term that neither team really grasped with both hands. The Stingrays’ errors from last week crept into the early parts of the match - switches across goal and turnovers resulting in goals - leaving the home side to catch up a 13-point deficit. Lachie Batten left his man to set up a number of forward-50 entries for the Stingrays through the first half as the tempo shifted. From the first change onwards, the match belonged to the Stingrays. The defensive end abandoned its erroneous start and worked seamlessly to deny Geelong across the field. Daniel Capiron, Brandon White and Thomas Stoeffels repelled at all avenues and even without AFL Academy defensive duo Jacob Weitering and Keiran Collins, the Stingrays held strong throughout the back end. Keeping Geelong to just one goal after halftime, to all but seize victory from the last line of defence, the romping triumph went from one end to the other as the Stingrays rapidly gained momentum through the midfield. Bailey Rice, who shrugged off a pretty significant hip injury to play, and Myles Poholke ran riot across the Shepley Oval centre to set up Harry Prior and Josh Battle - Dandy’s new tall timber. Prior and Battle showed the Stingrays’ forward line is a Swiss army knife of possibilities with the duo pinch-hitting in the ruck for Jayden Bubb - who performed ably in only his second TAC Cup match - before heading forward to create aerial opportunity and set up the victory. Capping off the victory, Cranbourne’s Zak Roscoe excelled in his first TAC Cup outing booting the first two goals for Dandenong before slamming on another couple to finish with a big bag-of-four. With Dandenong furiously moving the ball up field - taking only two or three kicks to get it end to end - the waywardness of its season opening loss at the hands of Gippsland had been forgotten, leaving only smiles in the coaches box for Dandenong’s Craig Black. “We started really well and at quarter-time they were probably on top of us a little bit,” Black said. “Then we really competed really hard, got our hands on the footy and moved it a lot quicker than we did last week and got some rewards for our effort up forward. “Probably had 15 players that you could have tried to squeeze into the six (best on ground),

THE PANTHERS pantheon is set to clash once again as Devon Meadows and Pearcedale battle it out for the Larnarch Cup. The rivalry ramped back up in 2013 when Devon Meadows left Casey Cardinia Football League (now defunct) to join the Nepean Football League and get a fresh start. On the Panther duo’s Nepean battles, currently the ledger sits at two-wins apiece ahead of this weekend’s Nepean season opener. The cup resides at Glover Reserve for now following Devon Meadows’ 70-point win over Pearcedale in Round 12 last year. In the Panther-on-Panther clash, Pearcedale coach Jamie Merchan will have his Panthers up and about with new recruits Brendan Neville, Callum Searle, Michael Williams and Dan Heijden alongside Brent Timmins and three VFL listed players, including former
Dandenong Stingrays’ defender Daylan Kempster, who will be available when VFL duties aren’t calling. Pearcedale coach Jamie Merchan thought the lead up to the season had been positive for the Panthers. “We played Langwarrin and Seaford - pretty competitive against both clubs and it’s all been about educating the guys over the preseason about how we want to play,” Merchan said. “We’ve lost some quality players, but we’d like to think we’ve replaced them with players that are just as good. “Really tried to recruit good quality players around that 2426 mark… got some good quality kids as well.” Taking a win over their City of Casey rivals would be the perfect start to the Nepean season according to Merchan, but he is not expecting anything less than a hard-fought battle. “Kicking off the season with a win is super important for us,” Merchan said.
“I think certainly we like the guys to be rewarded for the effort and commitment. “Devon is a hard and tough side - they got us last year, so I’m expecting a brutal contest and hopefully we can walk away with the victory.” When the Stingrays have byes, Pearcedale will also get the services of centre-half-forward/ruck Harrison Prior. Devon Meadows will also have a few new Panthers to pick from as incoming playingcoach Glenn Michie (Newborough) has his choice from the likes of Sam Purdon (Wantirna South), Ryan Talbot (Ferntree Gully) and a swathe of junior recruits. Devon Meadows also has a pair of juniors in the Stingrays program with Kyle Beveridge and Phil Raso in line for a TAC Cup debut this season. First bounce is 2pm on Saturday at Devon Meadows’ home ground - Glover Reserve.

Clear goals in new era The newly-formed South East Football Netball League begins in earnest this Saturday with the nine-team competition setting the foundation for the future of football in the region. The News’s DAVID NAGEL gets the coaches’ thoughts on the season ahead. BEACONSFIELD 2014: Third-Premiers
Key ins: Chris Worner (Southern), Tom Wilkinson (Peninsula), Justin Olsson (Eastern). Clint Evans says: “It’s going to be a really tough year, a tough year to step up from where we were last season. Sides are going to be coming for us and we just need to make sure we’re up for it or we’ll fall back into the pack.”
BERWICK 2014: Fifth
Key ins: Ash Smith (West Coast Eagles), Ben Kearns (Morwell), Michael Riseley (NEAFL). Rhys Nisbet says: “All of our recruits are experienced and have played at a higher level and bring bigger bodies into the side. We won’t be so predictable; we’ll throw things around and have plenty of options going forward.”
CRANBOURNE 2014: Runner-up
Key ins: Chase Struth (Ballarat), Nick Morrish (Southern). Simon Goosey says: “We don’t want to rely on individuals, we want to rely on our total team game so if a player is out another can come in and play his role. Footy’s gone past the days of relying on just a few, and that’s at any level.”
DOVETON 2014: Seventh
Key ins: Russell Gabriel (Frankston), Jarrad Boumann (Wangaratta Rovers), Sam Raru (Port Melbourne). Shannon Henwood says: “What Beaconsfield did last year was show what can be done if everyone plays their
role for the team. That’s what good teams do and we’ve used Beaconsfield as an example of that all the way through the pre-season.”
HAMPTON PARK 2014: Wooden spoon
Key ins: Andrew Shipp (coaching staff), Nathan Carver (Noble Park), Brad Williams (Queensland). Matt O’Neil says: “We just weren’t fit enough last year so we started training in October. Last year was all about reducing margins but this year we expect to be a lot more competitive and hopefully surprise a few sides.”
NARRE WARREN 2014: Top
Key ins: George Angelopoulos (Karingal), Jarrod Anderson, Andrew Hunter. Chris Toner says: “It was all about attitude last year, we thought we had it but we let things go that went undetected and we weren’t pushing as hard as what we were in the past. We’re very, very hungry at the moment.”
PAKENHAM 2014: Fourth
Key ins: Damien Holmes (Kilcunda-Bass), Beau Wheeler (Wangaratta). Steve O’Bryan says: “I think our running game is a massive strength and can make us one of the best sides in the competition. We had some good results last year that has built our belief that we can beat anyone on our day.”
ROC 2014: Sixth
Key ins: Sean Roach (Mooroolbark), Matthew Ford (Mooroolbark), Chris Larosa (Warragul Industrials).
Brad Jones says: “Our best football is played being fast, being hard and being clean. We have to break the lines, create overlap and take the game on. We’ve got the leg speed and ball movement to do that.”
TOORADIN 2014: Eighth Key ins: Ben Hallas (AFL Cairns), Ryan White (AFL Mount Isa), Kyle Van Der Pluym (Eastern). Lachlan Gillespie says: “It’s almost boring but the best way for us to move forward is too play to our structures and our game plan. It sounds simple but if we can do that for four quarters instead of two I think we’ll be very hard to beat.” 2015 LADDER PREDICTION TEAM PTS NARRE WARREN . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 68 CRANBOURNE . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 56 BERWICK . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 52 BEACONSFIELD . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 40 DOVETON . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 40 ROC . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 40 PAKENHAM . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 24 TOORADIN. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 24 HAMPTON PARK . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12 This week’s games (11 April): Beaconsfield v Berwick, Cranbourne v Narre Warren, Pakenham v Hampton Park, Doveton v Tooradin, ROC- Bye.

SEFNL - Round 1 DOVETON 14.17 (101) d HAMPTON PARK 11.5 (71) IT WAS the result everyone expected heading into the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) season opener, but Hampton Park showed plenty of reasons to be proud in its 30-point loss to Doveton. Positive strides forward have been taken by Matt O’Neill and his charges this season and that was clear from the first contest. By no means embarrassed out of this contest held on a glorious Good Friday afternoon, the Hampton Park of old heading out to accept a 100-point or more demolition - is no more. Ruckman William Thomas kept stride with SEFNL elite Russell Gabriel
and fed the ball out well to Nathan Allen and Ashleigh Allen. With a functional forward line, the Redbacks slotted multiples through former AFL player Andrew Schipp, Nathan Carver and Dean Jamieson (two goals each). The Spiderland crowd had plenty of reasons to cheer for the red-and-black brigade as they booted their way back into the match with a four-goal third term. But this was Doveton’s match to lose from the first bounce - especially with a power-packed line-up featuring recruits Russell Gabriel and former AFL defender Jarrad Boumann. Doveton had every opportunity to burst open the game and help their percentage skyrocket, but whether it was early-season jitters or just a lack of finishing skill the Doves sprayed 17 be-
hinds to leave the match in the balance. A five-goal final term put an end to any hopes of Redback retaliation as the visitors took the first points of 2015 in the brand new competition. Doveton co-captain Callum Pattie showed the grey-haired Dove still knows how to fly as he soared for a few speccies while excelling at ground level with four goals. Goalsneak Mitchell Pierce (four goals) also relished the high ball, sent in ably by Doveton midfielders Mitch Viney and coach Shannon Henwood, as he finished off his day with four majors and featured in the best alongside Andrew Green, Gabriel and Dean Bianco. Hampton Park hosts Beaconsfield this weekend while Doveton will head to ROC.
Upset win heralds surprises are in store By DAVID NAGEL EXPECT the unexpected - that should be the catch-cry for the newly formed South East Netball League this season. Just one game in and the surprises are already flowing with last year’s wooden-spooner Hampton Park taking down reigning premier Doveton. And that’s just the beginning. Our new league has new coaches and players that are keen to make their mark in one of the highest standards of competition anywhere outside the elite forms of the game. Berwick’s Sarah McDermott can feel it. “The excitement around the first game is always there, but this year with so many new coaches and players, it’s even more exciting to get started and see where everyone sits,” she said. New Pakenham coach Kerry Twyford can feel it too. “The enthusiasm and the interest around the place have been great, to the point where we actually had to cut players from the senior squad,” Twyford said. “We’re looking at four strong sides,
all looking to play finals and we’ve been working really hard since December.” And at Hampton Park - an early title contender after last week’s demolition of the Doves- new coach Kylie Kiddle can’t wait to test the waters. Kiddle, who comes to the Redbacks after three years at the helm of MPNFL club Pines, is excited to be a part of the league. “I believe this is the strongest out of the three leagues (Nepean, Peninsula and South East) so to make Hampton Park successful would be very rewarding for everyone involved,” she said. The season begins this week with the highlight being the clash between perennial finalists Beaconsfield and Berwick. In other games this week, Narre Warren, under new coach, former North East Blaze player Jade Heinrich travel to Cranbourne, who are expected to be much improved under new coach Simon O’Shanassy. Reigning premier Doveton will be looking to strike its first blow of the season against Tooradin at Robinson Reserve while Twyford will coach her first home game for the Lions against Hampton Park at Toomuc.
