AUSTRALIAN Mick Fanning won his fourth Rip Curl Pro to seize an early lead in the world championship chase at Bells Beach yesterday. Fanning, a three-time world champion, won the event’s first count-back final after locking scores with Brazilian Adriano De Souza. Fanning, 33, was the form surfer of the event, although some commenters on the World Surf League website questioned whether he deserved the 8.17 score for the wave that won him the Bells title.

Fanning and De Souza entertained a large crowd on the beach, battling it out in 1.5-metre surf running through the Bells Bowl. “Bells is a special place for me and it’s the first event I ever came to as a kid,“ Fanning said afterward. “The support and the crowds here are always amazing. Fanning is now tied with American Kelly Slater and Australian Mark Richards for the most Bells titles.

Cop’s rape hearing By NOEL MURPHY

NEW IDEAS FOR SENIOR LIFE P19-23

A POLICEMAN charged with rape appeared in Geelong Magistrates’ Court yesterday. Phillip Gordon Shaw, a Western Region Victoria Police Leading Senior Constable, was initially charged with two counts of recklessly causing injury in February after a Professional Standards Command investigation. He was charged with rape last month

following further investigations. The charges stem from the same incident, which was alleged to have occurred while he was off-duty at a private residence on 26 January. Mr Shaw, who has been suspended without pay, sat glumly in court five of the Geelong court complex while waiting for magistrate Michael Coghlan to rule on an administrative measure setting his next hearing for 29 May.

Dressed in a grey suit, white shirt and red tie, he looked downward, studying his hands and occasionally shaking his head as he waited for proceedings to move along. About 180cm tall, Mr Shaw appeared fit and with his slightly receding hair bleached blond and neatly trimmed. He exited the court for some time after Mr Coghlan indicated he would not deal with the matter immediately.

On returning Mr Shaw said only, “No, your honour, when asked whether 29 May posed any problems. Mr Coghlan advised Mr Shaw to ensure he had legal representation when he returned in order to cross-examine any witnesses. Mr Shaw left the court complex through a rear door, carrying a black backpack and in the company of another man.

MICK Fanning might have won the main event at the Rip Curl Pro yesterday but Melbourne again claimed the marketing stakes. The big smoke elbowed out the locals to fly its name on flags around Bells Beach for the duration of the event, with nary a Geelong or Surf Coast Shire to be seen. Melbourne has commandeered marketing opportunities at numerous major events in the Geelong region over the past few years, most recently including Cadel Evan’s Great Ocean Road ride. Given Bells and the ocean road are somewhat way outside the metropolitan area, what’s next? The Melbourne Port Fairy Folk Festival? Stick to your own patch and let the locals grab some glory, we say. SOME of the other locals, surfers specifically, were tempted to grab a little glory of their own during the event. Used to crowded conditions with dozens often

GOLDEN Plains Shire has the worst ambulance code one response times in the state, according to an interim report into Ambulance Victoria. Nine per cent of the shire’s code one calls achieved the 15-minute target response time, the report found. Response times for Golden Plains averaged around 25 minutes. Borough of Queenscliffe was the fifth worst in the state, with 22 per cent of code ones managing the 15-minute target. Average response times for the borough were more than 21 minutes. Surf Coast Shire’s average was more than 18 minutes, while Geelong managed to achieve the 15 minute target by 29 seconds. Code one incidents are classified as presenting an immediate or potential threat to life, requiring an urgent lightsand-sirens response. Ambulance Services Minister Jill Hennessy said Victoria’s system was in crisis, with response times worse than ever.

surfing Bells at the same time, the locals could only watch as the event’s three and two-man heats played out on their home break for over a week. “Might go out at Bells for a surf - there’s only two guys in the water,” was a common quip. And wouldn’t the crowds have been thrilled! NEWS this week that the Labor State Government will clean out the local water board was interesting enough. But what really raised eyebrows, and possibly some temperatures, was associated information that members of state boards earn anywhere from $40,000 to $80,000. That’s a lot of moolah for attending monthly meetings and the odd corporate function. Excessive, some might say. The standard justification, of course, is the well-worn observation, ‘Pay peanuts, get monkeys’.

Maybe, but in the case of state boards it might be, ‘Pay bananas, get gorillas’! USUALLY low-profile Golden Plains Shire made national TV news this week - unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. Channel Nines attack dog A Current Affair paid a visit to the shire amid a ratepayer outcry over bin surveillance, plans to reduce collections from weekly to fortnightly and associated gripes about rates and council wages. A camera man chased shire boss Rod Nicholls and reporter Martin King even trawled through a council bin in a search of double standards on recycling. As other local councils get involved in all sorts of social and political issues of debatable relevance at the local government level, the segment was a timely reminder about council priorities. It’s still all about the three Rs: roads, rubbish and rates.

Jail for flouting orders after robbing cashiers By NOEL MURPHY A MAN with numerous convictions for supermarket and convenience store robberies was yesterday jailed for nine months after breaching community correction orders. Glen Bennett, of Clifton Springs, was placed on the orders for the offences in May and November but failed to complete one hour of the 280 he was meant to serve and also missed at least 15 appointments, magistrate Michael Coghlan said.

Mr Coghlan re-sentenced Bennett on multiple charges of robbery, driving while disqualified and failing to comply with the correction orders. Bennett committed multiple robberies in supermarkets and convenience stores across Geelong, typically targeting young cashiers. He would purchase some items and, as the cash register was opened, grab what money he could and ran off, Mr Coghlan said. The incidents could have been “particularly stressful” to his victims,

notably those Bennett pushed aside to get at the money. He committed robberies at various sites including Belmont, Drysdale and East Geelong. He stole some $5000 in four weeks, with the thefts captured on CCTV. Bennett told Geelong Magistrates’ Court he now understood the benefit the orders had presented to his life and how dealing with GPs and psychiatrists was important to his future. But Mr Coghlan refused to recog-

nised Bennett’s “stated desire” and pointed to a lengthy list of previous contraventions. “You’ve made no effort at all and the prospect of you completing those orders is next to negligible.” Bennett, dressed in a blue-striped shirt and black trousers, showed no emotion as he was taken into custody. He kissed his partner twice, conferred briefly with his counsel and stood in the dock flanked by two police officers, flashing a quick, wry grin to friends in the gallery.

In brief Noddy’s money A DODGY solicitor who poured Ponzi scheme cash into former Geelong brand Noddy’s Soft Drinks will spend up to eight and a half years in jail. Alan John Munt, 61, was sentenced yesterday after confessing to losing $5 million of family and friend’s money, which was revealed when Noddy’s collapsed in 2009.

Board doomed BARWON Water’s board faces the sack, Water Minister Lisa Neville warned this week. The Bellarine MP foreshadowed a clean out of water boards around the state this year, despite the terms of four of the seven local board members expiring on 30 September 2017.

Drinks limit A TWO-DRINK limit will come into force at Geelong Chamber of Commerce’s monthly After 5 networking events. The chamber said the policy reflected its “duty of care” to members and would also help keep costs down for After 5 hosts.

Coles jobs 100 NEW jobs are up for grabs at a Torquay Coles supermarket opening in June. Coles said applications were now open for a variety of positions ranging from check-out operators to delicatessen attendants and administration staff.

Circus ban SURF Coast Shire will call on Municipal Association of Victoria’s state council to “strongly advocate” for a ban on circuses with caged wild animals. This week’s call followed a Surf Coast Shire ban last year on the circuses using council-owned land.

Treatment funds TWO Geelong drug and alcohol treatment services have “funding certainty for another year”, Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson has announced. She said the Salvation Army services would each receive $100,000 for programs helping women and children with alcohol and drug “issues”.

Scrubber risk ALCOA’S for-sale Anglesea power station would have to spend $175 million to meet demands for installation of scrubbers, Surf Coast Shire’s council heard this week. A report to council said closure of the coal-fired plant, which employs 80 staff, would be economically damaging to the shire.

STORIES of the Anzacs’ sacrifice abound as the Gallipoli centenary approaches. But what was it really like to be there? Geelong Military Re-enactment Group will bring military history to life next week with a massive display encompassing Gallipoli as well as other conflicts. The display will recreate the trenches of Gallipoli and show how some of the offensives unfolded during the ill-fated campaign.

Group member Robin Mawson said the reenactments would include the Battle of Lone Pine and the Battle of the Nek as well as a Tobruk scenario from World War II. “While the re-enactments contain a bit of entertainment for the public, with the explosions, firing, and running around, they also have a story to tell,” Mr Mawson said. The re-enactments would use stunning pyrotechnics, artillery fire and vehicle movement to create a visual and aural spectacle, he said.

The re-enactment group has an array of military vehicles including jeeps and troop and gun carriers. Displays will include period encampments as part of the Anzac centenary program. Winchelsea's Barwon Park will host Gallipoli and Beyond on 18 and 19 April, with proceeds going to the National Trust, Geelong Legacy and Winchelsea community groups. 151 more jobs for Cotton On By NOEL MURPHY CLOTHING giant Cotton On expects to create 151 new jobs in its Geelong head office next year. The retailer, with more than 1300 stores around the world and 760 in Australia, also plans to open another 570 shops over the next three years as it extends its global reach. Cotton On Group (COG) wants to lift online trading to $250 million a year and achieve total sales of $1.5 billion in 2015. Spokesperson Bridget Connor told the Independent the new Geelong jobs would cover a variety of departments.

“In terms of the 570 new stores, the count will come primarily from expanding in our existing markets. Internationally, Brazil and South Africa will continue to be key regions of focus for us. “The coming weeks will also see us expand into a new country with the opening of our first store in Namibia.” Cotton On boss Nigel Austin, estimated as worth $295 million in BRW’s list of Australia’s 200 wealthiest people, recently broke with a tradition of silence to speak with the financial media about the group’s fortunes. Founded in 1991, the com-

pany has stores in 16 countries including the US, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Brazil and China. The group employs 19,000 people and heads Cotton On Foundation philanthropic groups. The company has been building its own Cotton On Group Uni in a collaboration with Deakin University that provides a “fourmodule learning platform”. The latest revelations of Cotton On’s plans follow recent criticism for a company code of conduct that insists staff “keep it real’’.

Group faces big VCAT loss bill By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A COMMUNITY group faces “unspecified” legal costs after losing its tribunal appeal against plans for a service station at Clifton Springs Drysdale Clifton Springs Community Association (DCSCA), a not-for-profit organisation, appealed to Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) over a permit to build a

service station on Jetty Rd, near the twin towns’ main roundabout. Secretary Neil McGuinness said DCSCA’s appeal failed mainly because of “insurmountable” legal hurdles. “DCSCA accepts VCAT’s ruling but wishes to express its profound disappointment with the (Geelong) council procedure that permitted the service station to go ahead,” Mr McGuinness said.

The association unsuccessfully tried to stop the permit at council hearings last year. Mr McGuinness said the grounds for the VCAT appeal included rural amenity and road safety. Environment Minister Lisa Neville, Bellarine Catchment Network chief Matt Crawley and hundreds of local residents supported DCSCA, he said.

“The association did not receive the chance to put its case to a full hearing (because), owing to the unavoidable lateness of its appeal, and lack of financial resources, it faced insurmountable legal hurdles. “DCSCA wishes to state that its motives were, from the outset, the safety and well-being of the community it represents. “It responded to significant public opposition to the service

station and sought to act honestly and correctly at all times. “It now faces the possibility of unspecified legal costs being awarded against it. As a result, DCSCA is not able to take further legal action.” Mr McGuinness said the association maintained its “solidarity with residents living near the site whose amenity, property value and quality of life have been so severely compromised”.

Factory trawler fishing to berth

CONTROVERSIAL factory freezer trawler Geelong Star is fishing its way to Corio Bay after arriving in Western Australia from Europe. The 95-metre fishing trawler, which will be based in Geelong, has an approved fishing management plan to chase a 16,500-tonne quota. Seafish Tasmania hired the trawler after larger “super-trawler” FV Margiris was banned in 2012. Geelong Star will fish for jack mackerel and redbait in a small pelagic fishery stretching from Queensland to WA. Australian Fisheries Management Authority announced it had inspected the Geelong Star upon its arrival last week. The authority said the inspection confirmed the ship complied with requirements for GPS tracking, nets to minimise seabird, seal and dolphin deaths and requirements to monitor and minimise impacts on non-target species. Ship tracking website marinetraffic.com showed Geelong Star’s last position off Albany, heading into the Great Australian Bight. The vessel’s management plan aims to minimise its impact on other commercial and recreational fisheries. The vessel master must stop hauling immediately if a marine mammal was “observed coming aboard trapped in folds of netting”, the plan said.

HE WAS once ranked third in the world as a triathlete but Greg Stewart, pictured, will be just one of the cyclists enjoying the Great Ocean and Otway Classic Ride. He’s not even riding the top distance, 200km, instead opting for the more leisurely 143km while others go for the 60km ride between Torquay and Lorne on 18 April. “I’m still racing a bit these days, although not as much. I still get a kick out of it,” said Stewart, the 1986 Australian intermediate triathlon champion. Events like the Great Ocean and Otway Classic Ride were nowhere on the horizon when he began his career, Stewart marvelled. “There were only racing cyclists around when I started 30 years ago and it’s changed so much since then. “These rides attract so many participants, in their thousands, with many more doing social rides around the place. “Cycling is so beneficial, though, and when athletes finish their more physical sports, even if they are carrying injuries, they can still hop on a bike.” Picture: REG RYAN

Campers save as axe falls on fees

AUTUMN SALE

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG region campers have been saved $30,000 after State Government reversed a coalition decision to impose new fees. Environment Minister and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville scrapped the “unfair” basic camping fees before Easter. “The fees imposed...made camping expensive for families, affected school camps and buried Parks Victoria in red tape,” she said. “From now on over 500

basic camping sites over 70 camping grounds in 19 parks throughout regional Victoria will have no fees.” The Independent reported last year that local campers faced a $30,000 fee hike from the new charges in national parks. Australian Campers Association and Victorian Outdoor Providers Network called the fees a rushed, ill-conceived cash-grab. Ms Neville said existing bookings would be honoured and fees automatically refunded.

Shadow environment minister Brad Battin said the reversal was “breathtaking hypocrisy” because a Labor-commissioned report recommended the camping fees in the first place. “Daniel Andrews must commit to properly funding Parks Victoria and ensuring the best camping facilities for families,” Mr Battin said. “We're not going to be lectured by Daniel Andrews about camping fees when we were fixing the mess left by his government in 2010.”

Sean Purcell said a lung infection caused his heart to stop while jogging nine months ago. “I was kept alive for 25 minutes by 10-plus highly-skilled strangers via CPR before a defibrillator was sourced and started my heart again,” he posted on social media this week. “Twenty minutes later the paramedics arrived and I was airlifted to the Geelong Hospital. “I was placed in a coma for five days and my wife and family were told that if I woke up I would be suffering high-end brain damage. “It’s now nine months on and I

"cardiac death" with CPR were below three per cent. “To the people on the beach that morning: you saved my life and I wake every single day and thank God that you were there for me,” he said. “I have not met any of you and I want to. “I understand your reluctance to step forward but I would like to thank you face to face for changing the course of my family’s lives as a result of your selfless act. “Because of you my children still have their dad, my parents still have their son and my wife still has her husband.” Mr Purcell asked his stranger saviours contact him on Facebook, 0475 037 839 or sean.purcell@cottononfoundation.org.

Coroner probing intern death By NOEL MURPHY THE CORONER is investigating the death of a Geelong Hospital intern suspected of suiciding a week after starting work. The man, aged around 30, was one of four recent suicides at Geelong and Melbourne hospitals cited in a Medical Journal of Australia (MJA) report on workplace harassment, workloads and mental health issues among medical staff. A coroner’s office spokesper-

son said the investigation could take several months. “It’s very early days. Autopsies, reports et cetera can take a long time,” the spokesperson said. “At this stage the death has been reported and we’re investigating and putting together the medical information.” Sydney University's Dr Kimberley Ivory told the MJA that workplace issues confronting medical staff were “a perfect storm that’s been a long time coming”.

Dr Ivory told the Independent this week she would not comment on specific health institutions but said individual cases highlighted problems at the “systemic level”. “It’s a significant problem that comes up again and again,” she said. “At the moment we’re seeing a lot of reaction, which is a good thing. We need to take advantage of that to keep a constructive conversation going to address the issue at a systemic level.

The organisation expected individuals to exhibit appropriate behaviours in the workplace and to ensure its work environment was free from all forms of unacceptable behaviour. “There is a well-documented process in place for managing complaints and employees are encouraged to report inappropriate behaviour for investigation and action.” Letters, page 11

Dr Ivory said individual medical professions must address similar problems along with “others in the workplace, administration in particular”. Barwon Health said the wellbeing of staff was of “utmost importance”. A comprehensive care service was available to assist staff and trainees to build resilience, including a program tailored specifically for doctors, Barwon Health said.

“These are very complex organisations here, made up of all sorts of individuals. Some organisations are taking it very seriously. “The College of Surgeons, regarding sexual harassment, is taking it very seriously with its response. It’s not just an issue for surgeons but across the board. “I think it’s a serious issue to be addressed but at this point we’re just looking at how to.”

Music bar dream hits sour note in city cultural area Mature-male job By NOEL MURPHY program half full ANDY POBJOY has blamed City Hall red tape for stopping him opening a music bar in central Geelong’s cultural precinct. Mr Pobjoy said he applied for a permit in early February but was still waiting even though the premises previously operated as a restaurant bar for 15 years. “Our new premises is the former site of Bamboleo – a Spanish restaurant that operated with a 12am onpremises liquor licence with a kitchen serving tapas and live flamenco music. “I understand (waiting) eight to 12 weeks if I'm making major changes to the land use or the conditions of the liquor licence but this is just red tape nonsense at its worst. “I don’t want any special treatment. I’m not asking for something unreasonable – this was a restaurant for 15 years in the middle of an area they’re trying to revitalise.” Mr Pobjoy hoped his venue, Blue Note, could initially host live performers such as pianists three nights a week for up to 50 patrons. The Independent recently reported that millions of investment dollars

information on 13 February, including clarification of the intended use of the site as a live music venue. After further discussions the applicant sought an amendment to remove the live music component and seek a liquor license for a restaurant only, effectively restarting the process, the spokesperson said.

The application was formally amended on 18 February and referred to Victoria Police and council’s community development and traffic departments eight days later. City Hall now expected to issue the permit within the legislated 60-day timeframe, the spokesperson said.

RETRENCHED Geelong workers have less than a week to enrol in a unique program to find them jobs. Coordinator Bernie Cooke said the program was only half full despite the region's outbreak of retrenchments over the past two years. Enrolments for the free four-day workshop close Thursday. “There’s a lot of good work being done to help retrenched men and women back into work but those I've spoken with say they're having issues dealing with their unemployment after being in a reliable job for such a long time,” Mr Cooke said. The Independent reported last year that Beyondblue was warning former Alcoa and Ford staff to guard against depression and other mental health issues following retrenchments. Recent figures have shown a five per cent rise in psychological distress levels across the region since 2008, in tandem with job insecurity and manufacturing sector redundancies. Geelong Region Local Learning Employment Network (GRLLEN) is running the workshop program and two others with federal funding. The workshop is for mature-aged men retrenched more than four months ago. Mr Cooke said job seekers and businesses willing to participate could phone him on 0409 139 355 or email bcooke@grllen.com.au.

WASTING food is terrible. So anything we can do to reduce it, especially at home, is great allround, in my opinion. Household food wastage covers everything from bread left to go mouldy in the pantry through to halfcut tomatoes left unfinished. Cooking and serving the amount that will actually be consumed is an obvious start but it’s also worth trying to use leftovers in the fridge, like vegetables or roast chicken from the night before. They make great fryups – just pop some into an omelette for breakfast and you’ll often be surprised how they taste better than on the day they were made. What about fresh herbs, like my favourites mint and coriander? I’m sure most home cooks regularly leave half the bunch unused, only to find it later wilted and partially glued to the base of the fridge’s salad drawer. Yes, I too am guilty of soggy coriander or tarragon herbs in our fridge. But, like me, you probably don’t want them to get to that stage over and over again, where the poor leftovers are fit only for the bin. So, let’s not waste herbs any longer. Let’s interdict the wilting process, stopping it in its tracks by preserving them nicely for use at a later cooking date. When you think your herbs are approaching their use-by date, just pop them onto your chopping board and chop finely or to your liking. Sprinkle them into one of those old-fashioned ice-cube trays, then fill the tray with water and put it straight into your freezer. Voila, next time when you’re cooking a stew, casserole or whatever hot dish needs herbs, just pop out one of the practical frozen freshherb cubes from its tray, gently drop it into the hot dish during cooking, stir it in and allow it to melt. Another option for fresh mint ice cubes is to use them in a variety of summer drinks, such as lemonades, cocktails or simply iced water. Happy cooking – or drinking!

Charity relays thanks GEELONG Relay For Life was held overnight from 21-22 March, uniting participants to take steps against cancer and show that hope lives in Geelong for anyone with a cancer experience. My sincere thanks to everyone who relayed, donated, volunteered or supported this moving community experience. Thanks to their support Geelong Relay For Life is expected to raise over $132,000, which will help ensure Cancer Council Victoria’s support, prevention and research programs continue. The money will help fund: some of Victoria’s brightest cancer researchers and their cutting-edge projects; prevention programs like PapScreen Victoria, Quit and SunSmart; support services including a pro-bono legal assistance service to help those affected by cancer who may be struggling with issues such as wills, early access to superannuation, debt matters or returning to work; and experienced cancer nurses who answer calls to our information and support line, Cancer Council 13 11 20. I encourage Geelong residents to make use of this service. Thanks again to everyone who helped continue the fight against cancer. Hope lives in Relay For Life. Climate humour missed HEATHER D’Cruz (Letters, 3 April) might care to cultivate her sense of humour. A thickening planet or a weight imbalance as Australian minerals are shipped to the northern hemisphere are interesting hypotheses on climate change and more amusing than the laughs we get from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, hockey-stick graphs, “Climategate” emails, CO2 that's stopped warming us, and miscalculated atmospheric sensitivity to CO2. The climate debate is hard work and a little levity keeps us – and our esteemed editors – in good spirits. Tim Saclier Leopold

Warming proof, in fact ALAN Barron (Letters, 3 April) claimed that by attempting to silence sceptics I admitted I had no answers. I didn’t attempt to silence sceptics. I simply

BANNED: Paddy Dewan at work.

I was bullied from surgery BARWON Health and the Royal Children’s Hospital have had no staff member more dedicated than I (Independent website, 3 April). At the Royal Children’s Hospital I was told: “If you don’t get on with me I’m going to get you”. My complaints about that sort of behavior and some clinical outcomes were inappropriately investigated and dismissed. At Barwon Health I expressed concern about administrative decisions undermining my position, interference with my overseas volunteer work and the threatened loss of my college fellowship. After introducing myself, the person I phoned about my concerns said: “Oh, I thought I would be hearing of your sacking, resignation or suicide”. As for the restructuring Barwon Health’s paediatric surgery, another surgeon’s major complication was not reviewed for 12 months until I raised concerns. The review was inadequate because the person engaged to undertake it had a conflict of interest. A committee that reviewed the paediatric surgery service included the surgeon who conducted the inadequate review, even though I alerted the hospital to conflicts of interest. Despite my lengthy submissions and being the service’s principle surgeon since 1996, just one member of the committee interviewed me, by phone only at 10pm. Another recommended my exclusion from providing care at Barwon Health. I now cannot provide surgical care for children at Barwon Health due to bullying. We need a royal commission. Paddy Dewan Parkville asked the Independent to stop printing the untrue claim that global warming has stalled. My point was not to provide proof but to point out that sceptics had refused to respond to proof

already given. Atmospheric temperatures might not rise as quickly as everybody expected but this doesn’t equal a pause in global warming. Hopefully readers won’t mind if I don’t respond to the fictional claims of Peter Rees’ (Letters, 3 April) about “warmists” hoping for more climate change, scrambling to change terms and concocting notions that the heat switched from the atmosphere to the oceans. I’ll stick to the facts. Here is the proof. First, simple science says the vast majority of Earth’s accumulated heat is trapped in ocean. Second, the oceans rise in temperature consistently every single year. Finally, the 10 hottest years on record all occurred since 1998, with 2005 and 2010 the hottest until 2014 beat the lot. These are the facts sceptics fail to answer. Case closed! Gavin Brown East Geelong

Have say on violence THIS week the Royal Commission into Family Violence released an issues paper to assist individuals and organisations in lodging written submissions. The paper includes themes and questions to aid writers in providing the most valuable information about what works and what doesn’t work in the current family violence system. The royal commission has been tasked with investigating the problem of family violence from every perspective. This issue makes up 40 per cent of all police work and is the leading contributor to death and disability in women under 45. One in every three women on any train, tram or bus or at a local supermarket is a victim of family violence. The system is broken and we must do more to keep women and children safe. Royal commissions shine a spotlight on critical issues in a way no other kind of inquiry can. I urge stakeholders, organisations and victims to make their voices heard. Submissions can be made anonymously and confidentially or can be made publicly. Submissions close 29 May. For more information on how to make a written submission and for a copy of the issues paper, visit rcfv.com.au. Fiona Richardson Minister for Prevention of Family Violence and Minister for Women

Try YMCA sports

YMCA Geelong is running come-and-try sessions this month to introduce residents of all ages to the benefits of sport.

GETTING involved in sports is easier than ever, thanks to an innovative new come-and-try system at YMCA Geelong. Traditional come-and-try days are held on weekends, interrupting precious family time. But YMCA Geelong staff have introduced a whole week for residents to try sports without taking time away from their families. Residents keen to have a go at one of the many sports featured at YMCA stadiums in Newtown and North Geelong can book in for a free group session during an actual activity session from 20-24 April, giving them the chance to experience their chosen sport in real time.

“Getting involved in sport is a great way to keep fit, meet new people and learn new skills,” says YMCA Geelong centre manager Renae Lamaro. “By extending the come-and-try sessions to a full week we’re giving residents a greater opportunity to try sports at the YMCA without taking up precious weekend time. “We believe this new system will make it easier for Geelong and region residents to access our programs.” As charitable, not-for-profit incorporated association, YMCA’s programs and services offer the greater Geelong

region’s community opportunities to be healthier, happier and connected. The sports programs include basketball, gymnastics, cheerleading, trampolining and judo. YMCA Geelong caters for all ages, from pre-school children’s modified programs to teach them how to move through play, right up to seniors programs designed to keep older residents active and healthy. To make bookings or check the availability of this month’s come-and try sessions at any of the Geelong venues, residents can phone 5223 2714.

Fab Four fuels Frazer fantasy IN CHRIS Frazer’s Beatleseque world, there is no such thing as a non-Beatles fan. “Are there people who have heard The Beatles and not been a fan?” Frazer asks quite reasonably. It’s part of the enduring popularity of the fab four that keeps fans coming back to relive the glory days with the Fabulous Beatle Boys. Frazer, who morphs into John Lennon, said it was like reanimating the life and times of The Beatles and recapturing the excitement of the unique connection they had with audiences. “We never do anything by halves and we spend every ounce of ourselves in the pursuit of this every time we step on stage,” Frazer emphasised. “It’s our thing and it’s all fuelled by the love of the music and what we do.”

It began for Frazer at the tender age of four. “It was Octopus’s Garden for me. Age four, game over,” he said. “When I picked up a guitar and started writing music it was always with a thought in the back of my head that I wanted to be them. “I wanted to see the world through their eyes and get a taste of what it was like to hold the world in your hand.” For Frazer, performing in a Beatles tribute band is more than just a matter of copying the Lennon stage presence. He shares an unusual connection with his musical alter ego. “It is funny that when you see Lennon on stage he often appears like he was just hanging out and that he was a little disconnected. “The truth is, it was because he was short-sighted and could not really see what was going on. The result is he has no fear.

“Luckily, I’m also short sighted, so the moment I take my glasses off I lose my cares and let go. What’s left is just the rock ‘n’ roll and the buzz of it all and your best mates there with you. “It also doesn’t hurt playing the same guitars, amps, wearing the same suit and shoes that he did 50 years ago to the day. When I gear up I am Lennon.” Frazer felt a responsibility to The Beatles legacy. “The Beatles were and remain the best band that’s been for personality, smarts, blend, song-craft and musical ability. Every muso now rides in their wake. “They also knew that what they were doing would be listened to for all time. They turned simple songs into recording art, which is hard to match. “I never tire of listening to The Beatles.” The Fabulous Beatle Boys play Geelong Performing Arts Centre next Friday.

Hats off to magician’s Sphinx show THE MAGICIAN who fails to pull a rabbit out of a hat usually needs another hat but Greek illusionist Sankara already wears a number of different pieces of headwear. He’s a magician, an illusionist and an escapologist but above all a showman as he brings his international Las Vegas-style act to Australia for the first time. The self-taught illusionist attempts tricks no other magician is performing as the only one in the past 10 years to have survived being buried alive under seven tonnes of earth. Sankara’s promoters said he thrived on audience participation, inviting members of the audience to become part of his two-hour stage show. “No illusion is too large or too small for him to attempt – Sankara regularly makes cars disappear,” the promoters said. “Other signature illusions include overturning a car and being cut in half by a steel blade.” Sankara has worked with both spoon-bender Uri Geller and master magician David Copperfield. Sankara was born and spent his early childhood in Crete before moving to Athens where he began training in the arts of entertainment, magic and illusion. He has since worked with the cream of Greek entertainment, which included becoming the first illusionist to appear as a finalist on Greece Has Got Talent. His shows on Greek television attracted the country’s largest ever ratings, his promoters said. Sankara will visit Geelong as part of a tour of

along with David Attard as bassist Adam Clayton and Craig Jupp as drummer Larry Mullen jnr. Last month marked the 28th year since the album that catapulted U2 into the worldwide public consciousness, The Joshua Tree, was released. But it had lost none of its significance, Cavallaro told the Indepedendent. “People still want to hear those songs,” he said. “Once we are up on that stage and the music kicks in, that’s where the change happens. “We put a lot of effort into the show. We do our shows the way U2 do theirs. “Where space allows we have a video screen set up and running behind us. U2 were the pioneers of using video on stage. “We costume up to look ex-

actly like the band members and even do a costume change to reflect their different eras.” Cavallaro said the music of U2 was quite sophisticated, with Bono boasting one of the widest vocal ranges of any rock lead singer. “It takes quite a bit to remain faithful to the original but we’re all big U2 fans, so we love it.” The popularity of tribute bands could be sheeted home to the tyranny of distance for many international acts in touring Australia, Cavallaro believed. “We’re so far away and big bands don’t tour Australia for long periods of time but people still like to hear the music – that’s where we come in.” The U2 Show - Achtung Baby plays its first gig at North Geelong’s Sphinx Hotel on 18 April.

Band Achtung like real thing THEY GOT together in the way typical of bands across the country – some ads and the old school network. At first it was just a chance for some U2 fans to get together and belt out a few of their favourite tunes from the barnstorming Irish mega-rockers. But the accuracy of their portrayal started winning The U2 Show – Achtung Baby a few gigs as its efforts at replicating the music, costumes and stage shows paid off. When Michael Cavallaro hits the stage he transforms into U2 lead singer Bono, harnessing all the star’s energy and presence, he’s backed by band founder Peter Kalamaras as The Edge on guitars, vocals and keyboards

GEELONG actors will appear in play that produced one of the early ‘90s most-iconic drama movies. Greg Shawcross will direct the Geelong Rep troupe through the stage version of Aaron Sorkin’s A Few Good Men at Geelong West’s Woodbin Theatre. The movie version starred Tom Cruise as US navy lawyer Daniel Kaffee but Jack Nicholson stole and show with his Oscar-winning portrayal of Colonel Nathan R Jessep Shawcross said the stage version was “an amazing piece of theatre that would fit well in the intimacy of the Woodbin Theatre”. A cast of 15 actors will appear in the Geelong Rep production, beginning its two-week season next Friday.

Aged care job boost

Gloria Jeans manager Emma Roulston with the cafe’s new display window at Market Square.

Grandfather inspires window display MARKET Square retailers are getting creative with newly merchandised Yarra St windows providing passers-by with a wealth of regularly changing merchandising. “We wanted to create a point of interest and showcase the fabulous merchandising our retailers do in-centre,” says centre manager Sandy Kelly-Burton. But it’s not always just about the creative merchandising, according to Joy Sollberger, who owns the shopping

centre’s Gloria Jeans Coffee outlet. “The inspiration for our April window display was my husband’s grandfather, who recently passed away, and my sixyear-old daughter, Francesca,” Joy says. “The tiny table setting in the window was assembled and stained by my daughter’s great-grandfather, Robert. It’s a bit of a memory that’s very special to our family. “Also, Francesca’s favourite activity on Friday mornings is to get a bubbicino with

her dad, Marc, so our display is recreating the very special father-daughter bond they share. “When we’ve been setting up the windows we’ve had people walk by and say things like, ‘It’s so nice to see these windows being utilised’, and, ‘It’s great to see what the retailers are doing’.” More information about activities at Market Square are available at marketsquaregeelong.com.au and facebook. com.MarketSquareSC.

Downsizing easy in Bell Park’s Lifestyle DOWNSIZING the family home might seem daunting but, according to Beryl and Ian Warren, “it’s easy – you just have to make the move”. The couple had already downsized to Hamlyn Heights but wanted to be part of a community with more of a social atmosphere. Then they discovered Lifestyle Geelong at Bell Park. Conveniently located in a familiar area near shops and services, Beryl and Ian are now looking forward to moving into their new home and enjoying the home owners’ clubhouse and resort-like amenities. With Lifestyle Geelong under construction, they visited Lifestyle Hastings to inspect its display homes, experience the facilities and speak to residents who had made the move. “The community spirit is amazing,” Beryl says. “I can see us being involved in absolutely everything.” Beryl’s childhood friend, Colleen Nielson, was initially reluctant to more into an over-50s community but changed her mind after visiting Lifestyle Hastings. “I thought, ‘This is for me’,” Colleen says. Colleen has already had a garage sale to prepare for her move to Lifestyle Geelong. She’s looking forward to less

IndyMotor Electric BMW’s road to future THE i3 is the start of future motoring according to BMW – a very bold statement that had us initially feeling sceptical, even cynical. However, the more time we spent at the wheel of the BMW i3 the more we smiled and agreed with BMW’s apparently outrageous prediction. BMW (under different names) has been in the vanguard of design for almost a century. It began designing aircraft piston engines in 1916, then very-early jet engines in 1942, before moving into tiny ‘bubble’ cars in the 1950s, finally getting into prestigious mainstream motoring in the 1970s. That long history of thinking ahead has paved the way for the electric car of the future. BMW i3 is crammed full of technology, all clothed in a spacious body that weighs just 1195 kg. The body is made from a combination of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) and aluminium. Note that the optional range-extending petrol engine brings the weight up to 1320kg, a significant difference. Styling of the BMW i3 puts function before fashion – and we like it like that. It could be described as boxy, though there are some interesting little touches that disguise the practical shape such as the dummy ‘kidney’ radiator grilles and the truncated rearmost side windows. Strong body colours, with contrasting

ZIP ZPA: BMW’S i3 can hit 100km/h in 7.2 seconds. hues in the smaller details help reduce the visual bulk. Interior styling is equally radical. The dash area has horizontal surfaces, with wood finishes from certified timber suppliers in our test car. Information is based on the use of tablet style screens that can be set up in a variety of ways. The BMW i Remote App allows smartphone owners to remotely display information such as range and current battery charge status as well as adjusting the temperature of the interior before entering the car. There are two monitors located on the dashboard, a small one in front of the

driver that shows relevant charging and performance information and a larger (260mm) one in the centre of the dash with the usual multimedia and navigation features. The BMW i3 is powered only by electricity. A 360-volt electric motor puts out 125 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque, the torque comes on song from just one rpm (that’s right, just one rpm and you’re into maximum grunt!). This provides more than enough performance for a runabout suburban hatchback. Zero to 100km in 7.2 seconds in the standard model, and 7.9 seconds in the model with the heavier (by 125kg)

Range EXtender (REX) engine. The latter is a 650cc twin-cylinder petrol unit that charges the batteries. The petrol engine never powers the i3 directly and only maintains the battery charge at its current level, it doesn’t increase the amount of energy in the batteries, simply increases the overall range of the vehicle. This is done to encourage drivers to use electrical power as often as possible to reduce exhaust emissions. Further emphasising this is the fact that the petrol tank contains a mere nine litres. As in most electric cars there’s no

gearbox as such, just a single speed transmission that provides power to the wheels, the rear wheels in the case of the i3. The biggest plus of electric, and hybrid, vehicles is that energy is put back into the batteries when slowing down or descending a hill. There are a number of charging options varying from 11 hours for a full charge through a standard domestic 10amp power point; six hours via a BMW i Wallbox accessory (approximately $1750 plus installation); down to just 30 minutes at a DC fast charging station of which there are currently only two in Melbourne and one in Sydney – with others to come. We used a standard 10-amp powerpoint in our garage. This took the best part of 10 hours if the car was fully ‘empty’ but generally only seven to nine hours to give us a decent driving range of 80 to 110 kilometres. That was using Comfort mode, we also tried Eco Pro and Eco Pro+ modes but found the lack of performance irritating at times as was the lack of air-conditioning in hot and humid Gold Coast weather. We put ourselves in the keen driver category, presumably green-oriented buyers would get better results, with BMW suggesting 120 to 150km is there if you’re prepared to work at it. IndySport Poor Cats need ‘work’ bite Bay serves as Motlop suspended Swan up an Easter gift On the Chris Pitman

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

“WE’VE GOT a bit of work to do.” It’s a phrase Geelong coach Chris Scott has had to use a few times when faced with the frailties of his side, none moreso that the 62-point drubbing at the hands of Hawthorn on Easter Monday. “The last thing we want to do is think that it’s falling apart because of one bad performance against a good team but we also need to acknowledge that we were poor,” Scott said yesterday. “We were really disappointed with the way our system worked and the way the individuals within it played. “We’re hoping, I guess, that’s it one out of the box. But hoping alone won’t change the outcome this week.

SUSPENDED: Steven Motlop will sit out this week after an unexplained “indiscretion”. Picture: REG RYAN “We’ve got a confidence in our underlying system when we play that way. Unfortunately, for big parts of the game on Monday we didn’t play

the Geelong system.” Scott also scotched theories that the issue was similar to that which plagued the Cats last season. “I don’t buy into the idea that the problems we were having last year are the problems of this year,” he declared. Scott said the changes in personnel and system meant he did not “give a second thought about the past”. The good news is that Jimmy Bartel appears to have recovered from the concussion suffered in a tackle late in the game against Hawthorn and Andrew Mackie is also in the squad after being a late withdrawal last week. The bad news is that speedster Steve Motlop is under a one week club-imposed suspension at all levels

FEELING THE HEAT: The Warriors Vito Chichello under pressure during the Port Melbourne game.

for an off-field indiscretion. Scott said the suspension was a heavy penalty for the club as well as the player. He declined to reveal the nature of the incident. “We’ve got some expectations at our footy club that need to be met by all our players and Steve hasn’t met those. “We have clear expectations of all our players. There’s no grey area. “To his credit, he acknowledges it, he admits it and is prepared to take his right whack. “We’re really happy with the way Steve’s responded in the aftermath and we’re positive that this is going to have a good outcome for the whole club and for Steve.”

SWAN Bay was popular with local anglers over the Easter break. Anglers fishing over sand patches alongside weed beds around the entry to the bay caught King George whiting to 42cm on pippies. When the bite slowed, heading out the front and drifting with size three jigs caught squid averaging 1 kg. Just round the corner at St Leonards, the area known as Bourke St provided bag-limit captures of whiting, with pippie again the bait of choice. Kingfish remained elusive off Queenscliff but the monster whiting kept anglers busy. Fishing into the dark resulted in bag-limit catches of larger fish, with the grass beds north of the harbour and the change of tide producing the best action. Big schools of Australian salmon were present over at Point Nepean and further down. Anglers trolling white occy skirts caught fish of 2kg. The Barwon River estuary threw up some trophysize elephant fish and some good bream. Oscar, Dan and Digby Ford fished the Thunderbolt with squid baits, catching and releasing eight elephants all around 2.5kg mark over two hours. Anyone after elephant fish will have to make the most of the next week or two because this species’ season normally ends in late April. Other anglers fishing the same area of the estuary caught juvenile mulloway and bream. Corio Bay’s spoil grounds returned pinkie snapper on soft plastic lures, particularly Gulp turtleback worms in the Pumpkin Green colour. Some pinkies reached 2kg, while good-size flathead were a welcome by-catch. Fishing out of Port Fairy on Easter Saturday was Tackleworld Laverton’s Ceasre Abbate, Anthony Rae and Kyle Maher trolled Rapala Xrap 30s in baitfish patterns for tuna off Port Fairy on Saturday. They boated fish from 15kg to 25kg, most of which were holding in 48 metres of water southeast of the harbour. Wayne Barry fished the annual Whyalla Snapper Championship last weekend. After attending the previous 22 competitions, Wayne won this year’s event with an 11.84kg snapper. Local freshwater angling continued improving with the cooler weather. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir hosted a lot of anglers banking redfin and trout. On Monday evening I saw numerous anglers bank redfin of 47cm on the south side, with casting distance essential to success. The main lures were Pegron Tiger minnows and Fish Arrow soft plastics, with the fish moving in a little closer as the sun set. Trent Shiller cast BoB ‘N’ Spoons along the rock wall just around the corner, landing a rainbow trout of just over 1kg. Paul Blackborrow travelled to the Mount Beauty area where he found well-conditioned rainbow and brown trout in the streams. With a Celta his lure of choice, Paul caught and released 15 trout. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir should be worth trying with lures over the next week, with persistence essential. Saltwater anglers should try for whiting at Queenscliff, fishing into the night for the larger fish.

Warriors seek springboard after Port’s wake-up call By JOSIP ZILIC THE National Premier League’s first two promoted clubs – North Geelong Warriors and Avondale – face off at Elcho Park on Saturday for a springboard away from the tail end of the ladder. North Geelong is fighting to stop goal leaks after copping 12 in the past three games, while Avondale has also suffered a series of defeats but without the free scoring. North Geelong had been finding the net until last round when it copped a 4-0 wake-up call at the

hands of Port Melbourne. North’s opening few minutes were promising as Reardo Luka came close with a dangerous volley but it didn’t last long. Port was first to the ball, capitalising on some poor decisions in the Warriors defence for Trent Rixon to open the scoring on 13 minutes with a delightful left-foot finish. Moments later Warriors skipper Matthew Townley almost ignited his team’s fortunes with a driving volley that was cleared off the line. In the closing stages of the first half Rixon was on hand again to put

the score at 2-0 when he finished a well-built-up move on 38 minutes. Things went from poor to worse for the Warriors five minutes into the second half when Ryan Opperman finished off an Alan Kearney through-ball to slot into goals. North Geelong tried to inject some pace and width by introducing Michael Anderson, Nicholas Jurcic and Tomo Trbuhovic who broke the lines and held possession for longer patches but the scores were never threatened. The match was effectively over

when Kearney converted a late penalty. Warriors coach Micky Colina paid respect to the opposition after the match, highlighting Port’s quality. “All credit to Port Melbourne, they’re a good side and didn’t let us do a great deal. In the end we showed our inexperience at this level and didn’t do enough to fight back,” Colina said. “We need some players to stand up and take accountability on the park and show who will fight for our club to stay in this competition”
