LIFETIME OF ANTIQUE PASSION IN the mid 1960s, Andrew Pinxt arrived in Australia by ship as a 20-year-old migrant from the Netherlands seeking to make a new life for himself. When he first arrived in Australia, Andrew boarded for a time in Dandenong. Before leaving Europe, he was educated as a boilermaker/ welder and structural engineer but as a hobby in his spare time Andrew began to collect antiques. However, because it was not possible for him to bring his fledgling collection with him he had no choice but to reluctantly leave it behind with his family on his departure. In 1970 Andrew married his beloved wife Patsy and they moved to Cranbourne to establish his business and start their family. Their first home was in Narre Warren Road (Cameron Street) opposite the Melbourne Hunt Club. In those days, when Cranbourne was still a small country town with minimal services, there was no regular rubbish collection and the toilet was in the back yard. So, a part of Andrew’s regular weekly chores was to take their domestic rubbish to the local tip. The only problem was that in
the early seventies old items and unwanted goods were usually disposed of at the rubbish tip. So Andrew would visit the tip with a fully laden rubbish bin, only to return with his car full of antiques and other collectibles which had been deposited there by other residents. Andrew boasts with a smirk, that even his matrimonial bed was sourced from the local rubbish tip. In the early eighties, when Andrew and Patsy shifted their family from Cranbourne to their present property in the beautiful coastal village of Cannons Creek, they had a lot more room and
Andrew’s passion for collecting grew by the day to become a very sizable and varied collection. Andrew has been a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Cranbourne over almost four decades and in recent years he has become actively involved in voluntary projects in the tiny Pacific nation of Tonga. In 2014, Andrew’s most recent project, along with 25 other volunteers from Rotary, his family and the wider community, was to bring a much needed fresh water supply to the island of Eua in Tonga. With a desire to complete this project, Andrew has reluctantly decided to part with his much-
loved lifetime collection in order to help finance some of the remaining work needed in the Pacific nation. The added fact that he and his wife Patsy have retired and would like to down-size from their present three-acre property and spend some more time travelling in their caravan and exploring Australia has resulted in the opportunity for avid collectors to acquire items which it has taken Andrew a lifetime to put together.
