LEST WE FORGET

HIGH PRICE PAID FOR REAL ESTATE A PAKENHAM Upper soldier’s heroic self-sacrifice in the heat of battle in Belgium caught the imagination of the community at the time.

The advertisement that appeared in the 25 January edition of the Pakenham Gazette advertising the two properties of Corporal Fox.

CORPORAL Justin Bede Fox put himself in the line of fire so his recently married mate could return to his young bride and child. As a result of that chivalrous act, he made the supreme sacrifice on 15 November 1917. When it came to settle his affairs on the home front, real estate agents Joe Clarke and Co from Dandenong thought his heroics might help fetch a better price for the 30-year-old’s two orchard properties in Pakenham Upper. The agents were banking on his courage and character to help clinch the sale, as evidenced by an article in the Pakenham Gazette on 25 January 1918. “It will be noticed from our advertising columns that on Saturday afternoon, 2 February, at the Pakenham Hotel, at 3.30, the two properties of the late Corporal Justin Fox, on Gembrook Road, will be offered for sale by public mention by Messre Joe Clarke and Co Dandenong, acting in conjunction with Mr Harold Hogan,” the report read. “The first mentioned lot (30 acres) has a comfortable dwelling and 800 fruit trees three years old and the latter 20 acres and a plantation of 200 trees, in both cases of the Jonathon and Yates varieties. “Special interest attaches to this sale, by reason of the high esteem and well merited regard of its late owner.

“It may be stated that Corporal Fox was killed as a member of the Medium Trench Mortar Corps on the 15th November last, in the neighbourhood of Armentieres. “When the call for volunteers came to the 2nd Field Artilliary Brigade, of which he was a member when he left Australia, a young married Victorian stepped out, but Corporal Fox drew him back, reminded him of his wife and child looking for his return to Australia and with a breezy ‘this is my job’ took the place of his comrade, with the sad result known.

“This death of such high-minded Australians is a national inspiration and a moral stimulus much needed in an age when the spirit of selfsacrifice seems discredited and a negligible quality assessed by modern standards.” Sadly, the sales pitch did not work and the two properties were passed in for private sale by Mr Hogan at auction, despite a fair attendance of buyers. The properties eventually sold, but there is no newspaper account of what they fetched.

Australian soldiers rest near ruins in Armentieres, Belgium, where Corporal Justin Bede Fox of Pakenham Upper performed his heroic act to save a recently married comrade. Picture: AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL COLLECTION

LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN THE attitude to masterplanned communities can sometimes be one of, “Seen one, seen them all.” Those who hold this view however, are clearly not acquainted with the communities created by Villawood Properties. For more than 25 years, Villawood Properties has been creating communities that carry its signature hallmarks of innovation and liveability. Its justlaunched Delaray community in Clyde North carries the familiar touches that have come to be associated with the company while breaking new ground in luxury and amenity. Delaray, which will ultimately feature more than 1000 homes will also be a leading edge example of Villawood Properties’ focus on creating community through its various distinguishing features.

Its state-of-the-art residents club will be the hub around which the community revolves, with its range of facilities including gymnasium and swimming pool, café and parents’ lounge. Adjoining the club will be a community garden and a Men’s Shed, both features which have proven highly popular at other Villawood Properties communities. Beyond that the community will feature 10 acres of parklands and open space, incorporating wandering paths, ideal for cycling, walking or jogging as well as picturesque wetlands. “While there is a definite Villawood Properties approach or philosophy, which we apply to every community we create, we also make a point of ensuring that each community carries its own,

very distinct characteristics,” says Villawood Properties Executive Director Tony Johnson. “What we try to do in each community is to incorporate an element of the local - whether that involves the historical or the natural character of the area. “Our buyers are discerning. They want a quality home, but they also want more than that. What we aim to give them, and Delaray is a perfect example, a sense of community. We create facilities and areas that encourage people out into their environment. “This is something which we’re continually looking to refine and improve and in Delaray you’ll see the latest step in this evolution.” For inquiries contact Nabil Harb at the Delaray Sales office on 9684 8128.
