Hero ‘deserves two more VCs’
Jacka’s medal review
PARK’S IN HONOUR OF PERCY PAGE 5
By NOEL MURPHY AUSTRALIA’S first Victoria Cross winner deserves two more, according to the family of Albert Jacka. But the Winchelsea-district hero was a victim of “injustice for standing up to World War I superiors, his family told the Independent this week. They have the support of contemporary Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith, who agreed that Jacka’s World War I bravery deserved three crosses. Political efforts are under way to have his record reviewed to determine whether the extra VCs can be added to his medal count. Lance-Corporal Jacka received his VC – the Commonwealth’s highest military honour – for bravery at Gallipoli. Military figures including Australia’s official World War I historian, CW Bean, have long backed claims LanceCorporal Jacka deserved three VCs. But his 14th Battalion comrades argued that his straightforward nature annoyed superiors. The soldier’s family said this week that the Anzac cen-
Albert Jacka. tenary year was the right time to review his case. “He certainly should have got more, that’s quite true. It’s an injustice that should be remedied, said Maree Krohn, nee Jacka, whose father was his cousin. “He was astonishingly brave and very, very much protective of the men he led. He was revered by the men under him and he thumbed his nose at officers and that wouldn’t have gone down particularly well. Mrs Krohn said the Jacka family would be “absolutely delighted if his case was reviewed and further VCs awarded. GEELONG police are under investigation - but of a very different kind to their ethical standards department. Controversial US artist Spy Emerson, pictured, is in town researching the local constabulary for her “Hops on Cops“ project. Emerson recently drew attention in home state California with her touring Hook-Up Truck, in which she encouraged couples to get, er, intimate. All in art’s name, of course. Emerson, visiting as part of Geelong’s FIGMENT arts festival, said she planned to “exemplify and dramatise” interactions between locals and police “in the most positive way”. If Hops on Cops is, as the name could suggest, anything like Hook-Up Truck, “positive” is possibly an understatement. ITS AUDIENCE might be listening but does a local radio station return the favour? The station’s Twitter account yesterday told fol-

lowers that survey results indicated “you want more LIVE music”. But the tweet’s next line told them they were about to hear a Silverchair song “from 1999”. Maybe it was a live recording - from 16 years ago! CATS FANS could be forgiven for a pang of disappointment about Gary Ablett re-signing with the Gold Coast Suns this week. Many daydreamed of his return, perchance to set up the Cats for an audacious crack at another flag. But as former teammates including Cameron Ling noted, it was only ever a remote possibility at best. However, a recent local real estate transaction promises a tantalising consolation. Apparently an interstate player of some repute bought a house. Down the coast. At Moggs Creek. Double Take will let readers put two and two together. Or should that be 32 and two?
Charities axed By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
PROUDLY AUSTRALIAN OWNED & INDEPENDENT
Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au
A CRACKDOWN on local charities has continued with another five having their charitable status revoked and a further 48 facing the same fate. The Independent reported last month Grovedale Community Centre lost its charity licence for failing to fulfil its legal obligations. Australian Charities and Notfor-profits Commission (ACNC) has now revoked Norlane Baptist Church, Gateway Christian Care Trust, Geelong Disabled and Disadvantaged Community Participation, Ross Bush Memorial Foundation and the Ukrainian Autocephalic Orthodox Church. Among the 48 charities facing revocation are religious, educa-
tion, disability, health, medical research, welfare, youth, conservation and arts organisations. Commissioner Susan Pascoe said revocation of charity status was reserved for the most serious of cases. “We’ll act firmly and quickly where there’s evidence of serious mismanagement or misappropriation, a serious, persistent or deliberate breach of the ACNC Act, or where vulnerable people or significant charitable assets are at risk.” Ms Pascoe said the announcement showed the ACNC was committed to providing the community with an accurate, up-todate charity register and enforcing compliance. “Submitting an annual information statement to the ACNC
each year is a legislative requirement to maintaining registration,” she said. “It is not a difficult process and the ACNC can help charities that need assistance. “Annual information statements are published on the national charity register, so that the community can find out information about their activities and operations.“ Charities facing revocation include Geelong Region Medical Research Foundation, Gordon Association of Students, Uniting Care Concerns, Geelong Community Orchestra, Wathaurong Wholesale Trust, Royal Geelong Agricultural & Pastoral Society and Otway Community Conservation Network.

Faull hit-run accused charged with murder By PAUL MILLAR HOBBLING on crutches, Mark Sheen slumped into a Geelong Magistrates’ Court chair yesterday, charged with murdering Corio’s Gary Faull. The heavily tattooed 21-year-old clasped his hands in front of him and gazed around the courtroom during his brief appearance. Police arrested Sheen, of no-fixed address, without incident at Lara just
after 7pm Wednesday. Homicide detectives yesterday charged him in connection with a hitrun at Corio that resulted in the death of 65-year-old Mr Faull. He was raking leaves on his neighbour’s nature strip when a motorcycle Sheen was riding allegedly struck him on Easter Sunday. Mr Faull, a husband, father and grandfather, was taken to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital but died from his in-
juries on 14 April. His funeral was on Wednesday. In court yesterday Mr Sheen, seated between two guards, allowed his crutches to fall by his side as he listened to the brief hearing. Dressed in a black patterned Tshirt and denim jeans, he leant back in his chair as the court heard he had suffered an injury to his foot but he appeared to need no other medical aid. The court noted that he should
have an appointment with a doctor. No application was made for bail and he was remanded to face the same court on 14 August. Police have also charged another man in relation to the fatality. Corio’s Matthew Robertson will front court on the same date to answer a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice. The 30-year-old’s bail was extended in an earlier court appearance.
In brief Baby stable A FOUR-month old baby is now in a stable condition after a car smashed into her Breakwater bedroom on Sunday, according to Royal Children’s Hospital. Police said investigators were yesterday preparing to interview the driver of the car, a 21-year-old Grovedale man, who had been released from hospital with minor injuries.
Skimmer found POLICE have appealed for public help over an ATM card skimmer found in central Geelong on the weekend. Police said a customer preparing to withdraw cash pulled the skimmer from a Commonwealth Bank ATM in Ryrie St on Saturday morning after noticing the machine looked “odd”.
Three chased POLICE dogs and heat scanners helped find three wanted Geelong men on the run in bush near Anglesea just after midnight on Saturday. Police alleged the men used a stolen Ford Territory in Geelong to steal a box trailer containing motorbikes but fled on foot when the vehicle became bogged on a four-wheel-drive track off Forest Rd.
Two injured A TWO-car crash at Freshwater Creek has seriously injured two men. A man in his 60s was flown to The Alfred hospital after rescue crews spent 45 minutes trying to free him from the wreckage on Anglesea Rd, while the other victim, in his 20s, was taken to Geelong for treatment.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN KILLING dolphins and seals was unavoidable but would be minimised, proponents of controversial freezer trawler Geelong Star said yesterday. Speaking as the 95-metre vessel unloaded its first catch at Corio Quay, small pelagic fisheries chief Grahame Turk called the deaths “regrettable”. Geelong Star killed the animals on its first fishing trip while travelling from Western Australia to its new home port.
“No one likes to kill sea mammals but it’s a fact of life. Drive on roads at sunset and you kill kangaroos,” Mr Turk said. “Sometimes dolphins and seals get in the way of activities on the water.” Mr Turk said a series of systems and requirements to avoid sea mammal deaths worked “for the most part”. “We’re investigating why the system didn’t work for those particular deaths. We’re modifying the gear and having new gear flown out from Europe to be fitted before (the ship)
takes off again. “I can’t give an assurance it won’t happen again but we try to minimise those incidents. “If you want to be sure there are never any dolphins or seals killed you would have to stop all fishing.” Geelong Star professional fisherman Steven Epworth said the trawler was “not the big monster everyone thinks”. “It’s creating jobs around this town. Hopefully (the trawler’s) whole factory is from Geelong as soon as we
can train (staff) up. “We’re only taking small portions away from a big-portioned area.” The vessel’s first crew of 34 had 15 members from Geelong. A second crew will undertake the next fishing foray. The boat’s first crew was a mix of experienced fisherman, long-term unemployed people and migrants from Africa and Afghanistan. The trawler and its operations promise a $20 million windfall for Geelong’s economy.

Cross hero’s park honour By NOEL MURPHY
NAMESAKE: Percy Cherry.
PERCY Cherry was no stranger to bravery when he rushed two machine-gun posts during an attack at Malt Trench on The Somme in March 1917. Six months earlier he was injured in a duel with a German officer at Pozieres. He was out of action for three months and promoted to lieutenant before throwing himself back into action. He was temporarily a captain when he and his men found a gap
in the enemy wire and took aim at German machinegun nests. He captured one single-handedly and turned the machine-gun on the fleeing Germans before he was wounded. He had been wounded before at Gallipoli in December 1915. A company sergeant major, he was promoted to second lieutenant and transferred to Fleurbaix, Messines and the Somme. On 26 March, 1917 his battalion was ordered to storm the village of Lagincourt, on the
Hindenburg Line, where it met fierce resistance. After all other officers were dead or wounded, he solidered on to clear the village of the enemy. But the Germans counterattacked and the battle raged all day long. Wounded in the leg, he remained at his post until a shell killed him late in the afternoon. He was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for “bravery beyond description”. A Military Cross followed.
This week Percy Cherry Park was named in his honour at Curlewis, near where he was born at Drysdale in 1895. Descendant and local resident Bill Westhead said the naming helped heal the generational pain of the family’s losses while recognising the commitment of the Great War’s soldiers. “It is a symbolic day, not for the glorification of war but for the reverence of the participants,“ Mr Westhead said. “When a serviceman or wom-
an is deployed into combat their extended family is on watch. There is no peace. “The huge casualties are emotionally devastating on families and communities and the effects remain in their social fabric. “As part of this naming ceremony, we should all remember the Anzacs and those who followed and fought to preserve our country’s democratic rights and the enabling of free speech. “It’s a freedom we need to cherish every day.”

Our ‘angel’ defied risks of wartime By NOEL MURPHY COLD, hunger, disease, even discrimination at the hands of senior officers – the foes faced in war can be much more than deadly shells and bullets from the enemy. Nurses such as Kitty McNaughton learned early in the Gallipoli campaign that they were almost as much at risk of becoming a casualty as the shot and smashed men they tried to mend. The Little River woman, who had worked in hospitals at Geelong and Bairnsdale before signing on to the war in 1915, was one of the angels of Lemnos, an island near Gallipoli that fielded the conflict’s casualties. Historian Janet Butler used Sister McNauhton’s diary to immortalise her story in Kitty’s War, detailing the tribulations, depredations and achievements of Gallipoli.

Sr McNaughton worked at Cairo, Lemnos and The Somme, where she saw childhood friends killed in conflict, became ill and was transferred to England before returning to the front. She was the first theatre nurse to work for renowned Australian surgeon Colonel Sir Henry Newland and won nursing’s highest decoration, the Royal Red Cross, first class. Ms Butler wrote how Sr McNaughton nursed “severely wounded German soldiers for the British, ‘my Huns’, as she called them”. A year later she ran the operating theatre of a clearing station near the front line. “Kit finished the war as Australia’s first plastic surgery nurse, assisting the discipline’s pioneers as they repaired the shattered
faces of Australian soldiers,” Ms Butler wrote. “On her return home she married the man she had dreamt about on the way to war – Joe Ryan, a Little River farmer.” Author Katrina Hedditch detailed the Dardanelles nursing travails in Lemnos 1915: A Nursing Odyssey to Gallipoli, describing the appalling conditions nurses faced with limited food, water or supplies to treat soldiers’ maggot-riddled, gangrenous wounds. Ms Butler noted how the role of women like Sr McNaughton in war was often obscured. “Researching women has particular difficulties; they are relatively invisible in the official record,” she wrote. “The kinds of records we need to turn to are more intimate ones such as letters and diaries.”

Underground survivor By NOEL MURPHY
Roy Longmore
THEY were bred tough a century ago when Aussies threw themselves into the shocking conflagration that was Gallipoli. The last Victorian veteran – and second-last Australian – of that campaign to pass away was Bannockburn’s Roy Longmore, in 2001, aged 107. Mr Longmore rarely spoke of his time as a sapper with the 2nd Division, digging beneath Turkish posts and laying mines. He attributed his survival at Gallipoli to his subterranean occupation. “A lot of blokes would
stick their head up saying, ‘Oh, they’ll never get me,’ but they did, so I kept my head,” Longmore once said. Standing 185cm, Mr Longmore was glad to be presented with a shovel and told to tunnel after arriving at Gallipoli in October 1915. He considered himself lucky to be going underground. After the Gallipoli evacuation of 1916 he served at Pozieres, Armentieres and Villers-Bretonneux on the Western Front. Mr Longmore left Gallipoli unscathed but was wounded three times in France – with shrapnel to the right thigh,
right arm and left knee. For a time he was thought dead when injured shortly before the 1918 Armistice. “We were patrolling in a gully when suddenly half a dozen Germans appeared over a hill armed with machine guns and opened fire,“ he recalled. “Jerry riddled me, knocking me flat on my back, and the last I heard was, ‘Longy’s had it, they got him.” Luckily his mates saw Mr Longmore move and set about rescuing him. After returning his injuries kept him from farm labour and he found work driving taxis in Melbourne.
“They’re no good, these wars,” he said later. “A lot of lives lost, no use at all. There’s got to be another way of fixing up these rows without killing each other.” When Mr Longmore died, then-Veterans Affairs Minister Bruce Scott described him as “one of those who forged the Anzac legend, whose courage, service and sacrifice at Gallipoli laid down the tradition that ... helped define us as Australians”. A year earlier he was recognised as an “Australian Legend” in a series of Australia Post commemorative stamps.
Heroes restored By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN WITH the passing of Australia’s World War I veterans, keeping their service records straight is more important than ever. That’s the opinion of Portarlington and St Leonards RSL sub-branch president Brian Bergin, particularly for smaller communities. “We wanted to remember our local First World War veterans and their families in several ways,” Mr Bergin said. The branch received a federal government grant of almost $15,000 to keep local memories alive. One of the group’s key activities was restoring a hand-written book dated 1917 and recording the service of 71 veterans who enlisted and attended Portarlington Public School. The branch also developed a WWI honour board, produced a memory booklet on local veterans and presented their direct descendants with an Australian flag and a certificate.

Charles Storrer
Henry Storrer
Story of Storrers By BARRY ABLEY EAST Geelong’s Storrer St is only a short throughfare, situated between Bourke Cres and Fitzroy St, but it represents a significant part of Geelong’s Anzac history. It honours three members of the Storrer family who served in World War I, two of whom never returned. Captain Henry Haigh Storrer was the eldest son of Henry and Margaret Storrer. He enlisted on 1 October 1916, having applied for a commission in the Australian Flying Corps, and trained at Point Cook. Henry Storrer arrived in England on 28 December, spending the next seven months training in advanced flying, gunnery, navigation and wireless operation. But on 2 December 1917 his RE8 biplane crashed in strong wind during an artillery spotting flight, killing Capt Storrer and the plane’s observer. His brother, Sergeant Charles Murray Storrer, served three years in the 29th Light Horse Militia before the war, so when he enlisted on 18 August 1914 his horsemanship earned him assignment to the 4th Light Horse Regiment and promotion to sergeant two weeks later. Sgt Storrer’s regiment landed in May1915 without its horses to reinforce the infantry battalions already ashore. On 5 June 1915 a Turkish shell penetrated Sgt Storrer’s bunker during breakfast. He died of his wounds two hours later, aged 20. Sister Jessie Pringle Storrer, a cousin of Henry and Charles Storrer, trained as a nurse at Geelong Hospital before enlisting in the Australian Army Nursing Service on 18 July 1917. She nursed in India, Rangoon, Burma and West Bengal, receiving British War medal and Victory medals for her services.

MPs back review for Jacka VCs From page 1 “As you can imagine, everyone in the family is terribly proud of him. There are still a lot of cousins around and quite a few relatives and I’d say heaps of support.” Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons threw his support behind a review. “Albert Jacka epitomises the spirit of Anzac and deserves Victoria Crosses for his actions at Pozières and Bullecourt,” Cr Lyons said. “Albert Jacka was our first Victoria Cross recipient. He was 22 years of age when he landed in Gallipoli and his actions at Courtney’s Post saw him awarded the Victoria Cross.” Lance-Corporal Jacka went on from Gallipoli to

fight on the Western Front, leading his men through the Battle for Messines Ridge. Badly injured twice, he was regarded as showing
outstanding bravery throughout his time at war. Lance-Corporal Jacka was twice recommended for Distinguished Service Medals and awarded two Military Crosses. The call to review his worthiness for extra VCs has won bipartisan support from the region’s two federal MPs. Liberal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said she was “very keen to take up the case on behalf of the Jacka family”. “I would be very happy to support the extended Jacka family’s aspirations for greater recognition of Albert Jacka,” she said. Labor Member for Corio Richard Marles said he would seek to initiate the review. “From a Geelong point of view, Albert Jacka’s
one of the Geelong greats,” Mr Marles said. “He’s absolutely one of Geelong’s heroes and there’s no more appropriate time to look at a review. Ben Roberts-Smith’s voice, as a contemporary Victoria Cross winner, is pretty significant, too.” Mr Roberts-Smith, who won his VC for action in Afghanistan, said Lance-Corporal Jacka’s bravery under fire had influenced his decision to become a soldier. “Anyone who knows anything about World War I knows that this is the man that probably should have received the VC three times,” he told Seven Network’s Anzac special The Power of Ten. “The thinking is he probably didn’t get his other Victoria Crosses because he had made them (superiors) so disgruntled about the way he led.”
Geelong artist discovered the hidden beauty of Great War battlefields By NOEL MURPHY IMAGES of war often focus on the brutal, the horrifying and shocking carnage of ripped and shattered humanity; mangled bodies, surreal theatres of conflict with an air of industrial ruin, anguish. But great Geelong-born artist Arthur Streeton saw The Great War through different eyes. “War is a drab and horrifying business at the best,” a reviewer wrote back in 1920 when Streeton’s works were exhibited in Melbourne. “Mr Streeton’s canvasses are a reminder that there were blue skies and sunshine even at the front. He avoids the more ugly horrors of war, giving instead fascinating impressions of the colour and stirring life of the battle line. “Generally he makes little use of figures in his studies and yet his fine landscape views suggest the movement and tumult of war to a remarkable degree.” Streeton himself described “true pictures” of battlefields as “very quiet looking things, there’s nothing much to be seen and every-
body and everything is hidden and camouflaged”. The mayhem beneath the smoke, of course, was quite another thing altogether. But Streeton’s perspective of war at a safe distance places a chilling perspective on the otherwise ordinariness of its surroundings. One of Australia’s best-known landscape artists and a member of the famous Heidelberg School, Streeton was a latecomer to the front. He was living in London when the war broke out in his late 40s. Too old for military service, he was appointed an official Australian war artist in May 1918. Streeton’s watercolours, drawings and paintings depicted the AIF headquarters at St Gratien, Glisy and Heilly, dressing stations at Villers-Bretonneaux and destruction around Peronne. He produced more than 180 works in six months on a wage of two pounds a day. Born at Mount Duneed in 1867, Streeton was the first Australian painter to be honoured with a retrospective exhibition in his lifetime WAR SCENE: Arthur Streeton managed to find beauty on battlefronts with works such as his Somme Valley near Corbie. and the second to be knighted.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN BARWON Health would lose $642 million over the next 10 years from federal cuts, Premier Daniel Andrews warned yesterday. But Federal Liberal MP Sarah Henderson hit back, denying any cuts and saying health funding would increase annually over the next four years Mr Andrews claimed a “new analysis” revealed that Victorian hospitals would lose $13.6 billion because the Abbott Govern-
ment had walked away from key components of a National Health Reform Agreement. Reduced federal contributions to Victorian public hospitals would kick in from 1 July 2017, he said. “The Abbott Government’s cuts comes on top of $1 billion ripped out of health by the previous state Liberal government and means Victorians will wait longer in emergency departments and on elective surgery waiting lists.” Ms Henderson accused the Labor State Government of play-
ing political games. “There are no funding cuts. Rather than making these inflammatory and incorrect claims, Labor should be focused on delivering more jobs to our region. “As our budget papers make clear, hospital funding under the Abbott Government across Australia continues to go up. In fact, hospital funding goes up nine per cent this year, nine per cent next year, nine per cent the year after and six per cent in the fourth year.”

STITCHED UP: Elissa shows a jacket she jazzed up with buttons from another item of clothing. Picture: REG RYAN
Autumn
Button upscale WINTER is on its way, so it will soon be time to dig out our coats and jackets from last year to put on again. Not all of us want to rush out and buy a new coat because there’s nothing wrong with the one we have or simply because it’s actually a recent purchase and it would be soooo naughty to shop again so soon. Correction, gosh no, it’s never naughty to be a frugal shopper! However, this time it’s not about shopping for clothes, it’s about shopping for buttons. If bland buttons are occupying valuable fabric space, it’s just a real shame when you imagine what others out there could replace them. Buttons really make or break an outfit, and great ones can even compensate for jewellery on the body. Let’s face it, buttons can look like a form of jewellery; jewellery for your clothes.
Frugal
Friday Elissa Friday
Some of the elaborate ones that look so spectacular could potentially be made into a pair of earrings. I mean, of course, the ones that don’t resemble standard buttons, otherwise you would end up looking like you really are wearing buttons on your ears, ha-ha. Do you ever sigh when browsing clothes due to the lack of interesting buttons? So how about jazzing up an item of clothing you already have with new buttons? A tip on finding fab buttons, other than of course checking out your local haberdashery stores, is to look out for them on clothes in vintage shops.
You may come across a vintage item that you love or loathe but, regardless of that, check out the buttons and, if they’re special, just snip them off after purchasing the item and pop them into you sewing box. Keep them aside for that item of yours at home that really needs spicing up. I found an item of clothing with some huge fabulous-looking gold colour buttons with elaborate engraving, which I kept aside for future use on a jacket. Buttons don’t just jazz up an item, they also have the ability to make it look much more expensive regardless of whether it actually is or not. So next time you’re browsing clothes, don’t dismiss items that aren’t to your taste – keep a beady eye out for great buttons, which could be of great use. Happy shopping!

Letters Vaccines better than death I’LL LEAVE Gary Oraniuk’s claim (Letters, 17 April), that removing child care benefits from parents who deprive children of vaccinations is unconstitutional, to his knowledge of constitutional law but a few historical facts might help balance his rhetoric. In the 1930s, when Australia’s population was a quarter what it is now, diphtheria killed over 4000 people in a decade and whooping cough 2800, mainly babes and small children. Vaccination eradicated diphtheria and most whooping cough deaths by 1990. Polio was conquered by vaccination within three decades. A 1993 vaccine for haemophilus influenzae type B has reduced infections from 400 to 20 a year and a 2003 vaccine has reduced meningococcal C by twothirds. Mr Oraniuk said “many vaccines don’t work” and that they were “suspected of causing autism” but he didn’t name them. The English trial conducted by Andrew Wakefield claimed a possible link between the measlesmumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism. The trial results were later described as fraudulent and Mr Wakefield was struck off the medical register. Subsequent research by authorities in Britain and the USA found no link between MMR vaccine and autism. If a link is feared, a parent still has to weigh one risk against another – not having MMR protection. Vaccines are not “forced medication”. Parents may refuse them. In fact, there are now 40,000 Australian children under the age of seven whose parents are conscientious objectors to vaccination. Those children are at risk and spread the risk in the community. Tim Saclier Leopold
Readers myth-informed YET AGAIN readers saw another lot of myths on the Independent’s Letters page, this time about vaccination causing autism but dressed up in fine language of the law and the Australian Constitution. Anyone able to research reputable science websites can easily find that the supposed link between vaccinations and autism has long been debunked. Maybe it would be more responsible for the Inde-
A degree of exasperation
Lest we forget to make a profit ANZAC Day has been hijacked by people making money out of it. Television has many ads with ANZAC stories, while newspapers have been selling commemorative coin collections to readers who cut out a coupon, take it to a newsagent and pay $3 for a coin. Another organisation is offering the opportunity to sleep under the stars, as the ANZACs did at a Melbourne Showgrounds, with dinner and breakfast for $121 a head.
As a returned serviceman, I am ashamed of what the media is doing to sell products and increase its selling power to make more money, all in the name of ANZACs who gave their lives in the hope of us having a better life. They didn’t die so the families they left behind would be targeted by big business moguls who own newspapers, TV stations and things like the showgrounds camp. Bob Thompson Ocean Grove
pendent to provide information from medical practitioners to educate the public about the consequences of not vaccinating children rather than continuing to publish nonsense. Heather D’Cruz Geelong West
Home made for porn BOB Thompson missed the point (Letters, 17 April). Watching so-called “adult” porn in the privacy of one’s home is one thing, lusting after images on school grounds, as a headmaster and employee, surrounded by school children, is quite another. The notion we should pity the man rather than condemn him was a cop out. Michael J Gamble Belmont
People need environment ALAN Barron (Letters, 17 April) claimed environmentalism was “anti-people”. NOTHING could be further from the truth. Those who try to prevent environmental degradation are taking a long-term view and seek a sustainable future for all people. To imply, as Mr Barron did, that we have to choose between looking after the environment and looking after people is absurd. Sound environmental management is crucial to our ability to sustain ourselves. We certainly need to address the issues Mr Bar-

ron mentioned but fortunately most world leaders are far-sighted enough to try addressing environmental issues at the same time. Daryl Backwell Breamlea
Deniers make movement ALAN Barron ended his letter saying environmentalism was “anti-people”. His statements leading to this made it look like a reasonable conclusion. But was it a conclusion or a statement of his belief? Consider how it paralleled with an organised denier movement that began in the 1980s in the US when global warming first entered public awareness. Arguments then for government regulation to prevent harm to health or environment were seen as socialism by stealth. Environmentalism became the new enemy and now Mr Barron is convinced it’s a “jihad” taking us to economic oblivion. The movement has successfully created a misinformation campaign to stall action on climate change. Its websites are not hard to identify because they usually resort to accusations of conspiracies and fraud. This is where Mr Barron obtains his information, so his statements, quotes and self-promotion as a scientific sceptic cannot be taken at face value. Jukka Tuisku Barwon Heads
IT’S TIME to retire from the Independent’s climate debate. I originally wrote only to request that the Independent refrain from printing incorrect and disproven claims that the world has stopped warming. Sceptics claimed I had no proof. I provided proof, based on recent record temperatures and consistent rises in ocean temperatures. The response from Alan Barron was to repeat the disproven above-mentioned claim and to mention two words: “Henry’s Law”, which relates to gases dissolving in a body of water. Heat is not a gas and Henry’s Law has nothing to do with the function of oceans as a heat sink. But what would I know – I only have a lousy science degree! Two things are clear: the Independent is happy to reprint false claims that have already been disproven; and nobody wins in a debate with climate sceptics. So it’s time to leave this column for more constructive comments. Gavin Brown East Geelong
Fed with fiction USUALLY Alan Barron’s letters contain a few halftruths mixed in with his ramblings but his last was all fiction. He claimed UK Royal Society and Dr Rajendra Pachauri had confirmed no global warming over the past 18 years. But the facts are that no scientific organisation has made this claim and the UK Royal Society said in 2010 that global warming was accelerating. Mr Barron claimed the world had “905 million undernourished people”. The true figure is well over 3.5 billion, with global warming blamed directly for about 2.5 billion. Mr Barron also claimed that environmentalism was “guilty of ignoring real people”. Perhaps he believes we should make these “real people” continue living in the filth and pollution of the developed world. The only way to ensure the needy can improve their health and receive nourishment is to reduce CO2 and other pollutions. Bruce Fletcher Highton

The Firm Slimming & Health Clinic helps clients lose weight, tone muscles and reduce the appearance of cellulite. Electrotherapy plays a crucial part in The Firm’s program, helping firm and tone muscles to reshape the body. The non-invasive treatment is excellent for centimetre loss and muscle toning. It’s also a safe, painless alternative to surgery or drugs. The Firm combines electrotherapy with infrared treatment and customised eating plans for effective, fast, healthy weight loss. Treatment takes place in private cubicles, with pads placed on targeted areas causing muscles to contract and relax, simulating natural muscle movement that would take place during exercise on those target areas that clients want toned and firmed. No magic pill, potion or lotion delivers weight-loss, which instead involves commitment and a lifestyle change for the rewards of improved quality of life, with a slimmer, more-toned body. Anyone who wants to lose weight but struggles with attending gyms or has body areas in need of toning and firming should visit The Firm Slimming & Health Clinic.

Shorrock back in Good Times By NOEL MURPHY NOT TOO many Aussie rock stars can lay claim to 10 major hits in the US, a couple of ARIA Hall of Fame gongs, chart-toppers in the 1960s and a singing, radio, TV and theatre career still flourishing today. But, then, Glenn Shorrock’s never been just anyone. His distinctive voice put him at the front of leading bands as far back as 1962, with seminal Oz rock act The Twilights before breaking onto the world stage with The Little River Band – named after the country town at the foot of the You Yangs. He’s been up there with the world’s top acts, helped open the tough American market for all manner of Australian bands and knocked up 25 million in album sales. Now into his 50th year in the business, Shorrock’s showing no signs of easing up. He’s still writing and performing, has a new album up his sleeve and is working with a happy amalgam of the new and the nostalgic. And he’s headed Geelong’s way with the latest Apia Good Times Tour, alongside fellow Australian music veterans Kate Ceberano, Brian Cadd and Joe Camilleri to perform a grab-bag of hits from the ’60s through to today. “I’ve lived and worked through the golden age, as I term it,” Shorrock told the Independent. “Some people call it other things, I call it the golden age of popular music.
MAKING HAY: Shorrock in his heyday.
LEGEND: Glenn Shorrock, elder statesman of Australian rock. It brought people a lot of pleasure, a lot of amazing music and, yes, it has a lot to answer for but that’s another story. “I had a good seven years with LRB, my purple patch, and getting to the top of the charts in America was a great thrill. Establishing ourselves as an A-plus grade act alongside the likes of The Eagles and
Fleetwood Mac was very satisfying.” Shorrock first came to Australia’s attention as lead singer of The Twilights with hits Needle In a Haystack and What’s Wrong with the Way I Live? He later formed Axiom, which had hits Arkansas Grass and A Little Ray of Sunshine.
He also penned international hits Help Is On Its Way, Emma and Home On Monday. Reaching Geelong next month, the national Good Times tour show features a solo set of hits from each performer, with the four sharing the stage in a showcase finale.

“I’ll be down in Melbourne for rehearsals beforehand with Joe, Kate and Brian. This will be the first time I’ve done this, Joe’s done it twice before – it’s just a way of my contemporaries getting together and making music,” Shorrock said. “I’ve done it before with Doug Parkinson and Wendy Matthews with Reminiscing. Brian and me also did The Story of Sharky and the Caddman (album).” The Good Times tour will play Costa Hall on 23 May.

Chambers made for all styles By NOEL MURPHY ANYONE who has ever wondered why music can be fun, moving, emotional, driving, soaring should see Kasey Chambers playing or just listen to her. The great Aussie songstress is like a breath of fresh air when it comes to musical categorisations – those irksome pigeonholes into which people like shoving musicians. Chambers can be sweet, twangy or down-home country but can also mix it with hard grunge rock or morph across to swamp blues bordering on bayou voodoo strains – all depending on how the mood takes her. That’s the thing with country music that a lot of non-country followers don’t realise – its diversity ranges from Bob Willis, Hank Williams, George Jones and the Grand Old Opry to Steve Earle, the Del McCoury boys, Dixie Chicks and Rednex. Country is not just old time, it’s also jazz, bluegrass, rock and techno. “I try not to put boundaries on what I write,” Chambers told the Independent. “I don’t say I’m going to write or make a country song, it’s more just what pops out. “Whether it’s swamp, grunge or country, I don’t over-think too much the elements of what I do. I suppose it will always sound relatively country, it’s going to because of my voice and all that but there don’t have to be boundaries. “I listen to a bit of everything – lots of what my kids listen to, like Ed Sheeran. We all listen to him and he’s so lovely but some days it’s Eminem, then the old Bob Dylan records, Merle Haggard. “There’s no rhyme or reason – I guess that’s why my music is so different.
COUNTRY ROAD: Kasey Chambers in the backstreets of Geelong during an earlier visit.
“I like a bit of all that traditional stuff and I love stuff that’s pushing the boundaries.” Chambers likes insinuating the odd country yodel into her songs, too. “Yeah, yodelling, bring it back,” she laughed. “I’ve always got a yodel or two in every song. I kind of sneak it in so they’re not sure whether they heard it or not, they don’t know.” Chambers said juggling three kids made music tricky but strong family support – dad Bill’s in the band, her mum joins the tours and her brother’s her manager – means she can take them on the road and fashion tours around them. It’s also pretty much how music’s been much of her life, anyway. Struggles that Chambers has encountered along her career are instructional more than scars. “The music’s in my DNA but I certainly go through stages where I want to get away from music,” she said. “It’s important to get away, to listen to that, especially when it’s a job. When it feels more like a job than a passion, take a break. “Now I recognise that earlier than I did in the past – I take a break, then I miss it.” It’s a nice problem to be able to address successfully as a working muso in demand everywhere around the country. Still, Chambers knows full well the joy of writing, singing and performing, as she said, “whether it’s on stage to a sold-out crowd or playing guitar and singing harmonies with my dad in the little cafe where he jams with his band”. Kasey Chambers plays Geelong’s Costa Hall on Thursday.

Song Sung Blue BLOW OUT: Geelong West Brass Band members rehearse for their theatrical debut with New Zealand Dance Company. of what looks to be a very moving production,” he said. “We’re well-prepared, we’re putting the final touches on the music and learning some new marching choreography. “We’ll put on a brilliant performance for the people of Geelong.” New Zealand Dance Company recently flew in conductor Marc Taddei and artistic director/choreographer Shona McCullagh for a rehearsal with the Geelong band
ahead of the company’s official arrival in Geelong. “There is something in the voice of brass bands that carries the emotional weight of a community’s joys and sorrows,” McCullagh said. Promoters said Rotunda fused “shadow play, mace twirling, brass band, Maori tradition and contemporary Dance”. Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s Playhouse theatre will host Rotunda from 21 to 23 May.

GEELONG West Brass Band has scored its first theatrical gig providing backing to New Zealand Dance Company. The band will play in the troupe’s performance of Rotunda when the dance company visits Geelong for the first time. The show, which takes inspiration from Anzac war stories, will mark the centenary of Australian and New Zealand involvement in World War I. Promoters said the dance company’s first full-length production brought to life a world of traditional band rotundas, iconic landmarks among many early 20th Century communities in both countries. The show is on a national tour arriving in Geelong next month and drawing on the talent of brass bands in each city. Geelong West Brass Band had been rehearsing for its theatrical debut since the start of the year, the promoters said. The 30-piece band would be on stage throughout the 85-minute performance. Band musical director Jeff Steele said members were thrilled to be involved in the unique project. “It’s something totally new and we feel privileged to be a part

Anco experts on home turf THE TURF specialists at Anco Geelong have seen the costly mistakes homeowners make when they lay the wrong kind of lawn. As a result, the Anco experts are always keen to offer advice, ensuring clients get it right the first-time. Martin VanderVlist and Jenny Hudgell have decades of experience in the industry, supplying lawns to homes and sports grounds around the Geelong region and as far as Apollo Bay. The owner-operators of the Anco outlet on Latrobe Tce, Geelong West take the time to ensure that their customers make the right selection for their new

lawn so it looks good for years to come. “You have to ensure you have the right variety,” Martin advises. 1146767-PB30-14
Day or night, seven days a week, I can deliver a home loan to your doorstep. I’ll ensure you get all the personal service you need to select the loan that’s right for you, not just now but also in the future.

“You also have to take into account a series of factors, such as whether there will be dogs in the yard, whether there are children, whether it’s a high traffic area and whether it’s in the sun or in the shade. “It’s smart to get advice from experts - if it’s not the right lawn it can wear out quickly and then needs to be replaced. You don’t want to be doing that sort of thing twice. Anco Geelong’s hard-earned reputation comes from offering good service and expert advice. The Geelong West outlet is also stocked with the finest lawncare products, seed and fetilisers.

IndyMotor Italian Romeo charms drivers By DEREK OGDEN AH, THOSE Italians. Back in 1923, race driver Ugo Sivocci slapped a green four-leaf clover on his ‘RL’ and drove it to victory in the first of Alfa Romeo's 10 Targa Florio wins. Since then, the ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ has been the symbol of Alfa Romeo racing cars and later graced special road-going series. Latest to take on the lucky charm is the Giulietta, which, according to the maker, marks the return of the pure Italian hot hatch. The QV tops off an already refreshed Giulietta range that, with its not-to-be ignored styling, including all-new interiors, an exterior facelift and awardwinning powertrains, brings unique Italian style and sophistication to the segment. Available in three trim levels - Progression, Distinctive and the Quadrifoglio Verde hot hatch - from $29,000, plus on-road costs, it is the last that concerns us here. True to the Alfa Romeo race tradition, the Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde is equipped with a new engine and is available with twin-clutch transmission and launch control. Alternatively it can be had with a six-speed manual gearbox. Alfa Romeo has also brought out a Launch Edition model, which enhances the sports car looks of the standard Quadrifoglio Verde TCT by adding carbon-fibre mirror covers, a carbon-fibre rear spoiler and a sports body kit which comprises distinctive new side skirts, a front air dam and a rear diffuser. Combined with the new gloss black exterior highlights, the Giulietta QV Launch Edition is the ultimate Giulietta. Just 500 examples will be built globally with 50, including the test vehicle, coming to Australia priced
from $45,000, plus on-roads. The allocation consists of 25 units in Alfa Red and 25 in Launch Edition-exclusive Matte Magnesio Grey. The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Quadrifoglio exhibits a more planted stance than its siblings, thanks to a lowered sports suspension, while the legendary fourleaf clover emblem on the front wings, dark-tinted rear window glass put the onlooker in no doubt as to the hatchback’s intent. The car’s aggressive look is completed by two large exhaust tailpipes and 18-inch traditional Alfa turbine-style alloy wheels, which refuse to hide the
red, four-piston Brembo brake callipers and large 320mm brake discs. Inside the cabin, quality materials and tasteful detail represent the ultimate in Italian style. New wraparound sport seats, trimmed in leather and Alcantara with white and green stitching, offer firm yet comfortable security during the car's showcasing its impressive performance. The new leather wrapped flat-bottom sports steering wheel is trimmed in contrasting white stitching, enabling the driver to maintain a firm controlling grip, while also operating the spoke-mounted infotainment controls.

HOT HATCH: The Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV has the hallmarks of a well-cut, classic, three-button Italian suit.
Large aluminium pedals are positioned perfectly to offer the driver snappy foot shifting for a true sense of sporting action. A model-specific instrument panel is a mix of analogue and digital, and sports a built-in QV logo. Signature QV kick-plates, darkened headlining with retractable sunshade over the sunroof, unique floor mats and a leather-trimmed gear lever and parking brake lever, with white and green contrast stitching, finish off the interior décor. A new Uconnect multimedia system incorporates a 6.5-inch touchscreen in the central dashboard and comes complete with Bluetooth interface, Aux-in connector, USB port and the option of voice commands. The 6.5-inch device also has a satellite navigation system with progressive route guidance and ‘One Step Voice Entry Destination’ function for entering addresses with voice commands, developed in collaboration with Harman and Here Auto. The Giulietta QV engine has been plucked from the Alfa Romeo 4C supercar, boasting cutting-edge technology including direct fuel injection, dual continuous variable valve timing, a turbocharger and a revolutionary scavenging control system which rules out turbo lag. Mated with a twin-clutch transmission, the 1750 Turbo Petrol aluminium-block engine delivers 177 kW at 5750 rpm and 340 Nm at 2000 rpm, the latter stable in the 2000-4000 rpm range, but is already 80 per cent on hand at just 1800 rpm. TCT works in either all-automatic or sequential mode via the centre console-positioned gearshift, or steering-wheel mounted paddles. A hot hatch, eh. There are others that edge the Quadrofoglio Verde in this respect, but there is no denying the strength of the Italian style that goes with this in the new rare top-of-the-range Giulietta.

IT’S THE personal touch that sets Keleman Motors apart. Gary Keleman has been in the business since 1982, so he must be doing something right. His care and attention to detail has enhanced his hard-won reputation in the car repair trade. The personal service includes a drop off and pick up service to the city. Gary is known as a Mazda specialist but his tried and true slogan, ‘Anything on any car’, sums up his approach. “We do all major and minor repairs, including exhaust, brakes, clutches and suspension,” Gary explains. “Plus we do the full range of upgrades and servicing, including air-conditioner re-gassing.” Gary and Mazda go back a long way, including his top qualifications in the repair and servicing of the famous rotary engine. Gary uses only genuine parts in his new-car repair and servicing work. “This way our customers can be sure their factory warranties are not affected.” He says customers should be able to receive dealer level service without paying dealer level prices. “We’re always happy to give a quote so the customer knows exactly what they are up for,” he says. Gary’s recently renovated workshop boasts the latest in diagnostic and scanner equipment. “We’re proud of the quality of all work we undertake and our competitive rates.” Keleman Motors is at shop 3, 13 Crown St, South Geelong, phone 5229 9555.

LOW-IMPACT collisions typical in shopping centre car parks are annoying to say the least. Add to this the fact that people rarely own up to damaging other people’s cars. It has been noticed that drivers are often scared to back-up any further due to very limited vision. These are the occasions where reverse sensors are very welcome. Bumper Master fits reversing sensors to help customers overcome fears of backing into objects or even pedestrians. Reversing sensors help prevent damage to owners’ cars as well as the vehicles of neighbours and other motorists. They can also help when backing out of tight garages and past narrow gateposts. Bumper Master can also help owners improve the appearance of bumpers when selling vehicles. Bumpers are the first part of any car to incur damage – and first impressions are important when trying to sell. All Bumper Master repairs come with a no-questions-asked warranty to give customers peace of mind. Best of all, most bumper repairs are done for less than the cost of insurance excesses. Located behind VicRoads at 3 Dowsett St, South Geelong, Bumper Master has proven experience in providing an alternative repair service to the bumper regions of any car. Owners wanting to improve the resale value of their cars should phone Bumper Master on 5221 0138.

IndySport Cats face similar Roos bite

ANY number of similarities exist between lower-ladder foes Geelong and North Melbourne ahead of their round-four clash at Simonds Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Both are coming off close tough games, with injuries to key players and form issues among others. Geelong escaped with a win over the Suns despite playing well for less than 30 minutes of the game. The Kangaroos played better than Geelong yet suffered an agonising defeat in a quality match against Port Adelaide. It presents an interesting juxtaposition between the two: is the confidence gained from an ugly win better than the disappointment of a quality loss? Cats coach Chris Scott believed his charges’ desperate fight against the Suns would stand them in good stead. “It was a courageous win,“ he said yesterday. “We didn’t play well for big parts of the game but late in the game when the heat was on our experienced players were good and everyone played their part. “Lang, Gregory, Cockatoo were all involved and Blicavs certainly played his part.” Scott said forward Josh Walker, who replaced Tom Hawkins after he withdrew to be with his dying mother, was outstanding. “He’s a strong chance to hold his spot in the side,” Scott said. Hawkins would be included in the 25-man squad but the Cats would allow him to make the final decision on whether he played. Scott admitted the team would have a different look this week but he had a “big mix” of players to cover missing midfielders Jimmy Bartel (knee) and Mathew Stokes (Achilles). James Kelly could find himself spending more time in the middle. Geelong needs a boost from mercurial veteran Steve Johnson, who had one of his poorest games ever for the Cats last week. Hard nut Josh Caddy is also primed for an improved performance. Scott paid tribute to Kangaroo big man Todd Goldstein as the leading ruckman in the competition at the moment. But Scott said he was happy with the ruck job of recruit Rhys Stanley, with assistance from forward Mitch Clark and swingman Mark Blicavs. “We’ve got a few plans in mind,” Scott said.

Tough Cat Caddy out to avenge final loss LAST year’s semi-final loss to North Melbourne has tough Cats midfielder Josh Caddy out for revenge at Simonds Stadium on Sunday. “You never forget those losses and how disappointing it is, so I reckon there’s a little bit of that feeling that you want to beat those sides you’ve created a rivalry with,” Caddy said this week. “Since I’ve been here they’ve beaten us a couple of times. They’ve been a hard side for us and they got us in that final. “Some guys might not use that as motivation but I definitely do.” Sharing 1-2 win-loss records this season, both sides will be desperate for a win. “North are a quality side,” Caddy said.
“They've had a bit of a disappointing start to the season, as have we. If we can come out 2-2 from this week I don’t think it’s too bad considering who we’ve played. “I look back to last year and Sydney were 1-3. If we can come out at 2-2 I think that's a good result considering we haven’t played our best footy yet and our upside's massive.” Caddy said last Sunday’s narrow win over Gold Coast had been “massive” for the mood at the club. “We were probably expected to win the game but early we lost Jimmy and then Stokesy and didn’t have Tom Lonergan for the last quarter. “I think it was a really meaningful win, especially for the young guys that
we had.” Caddy praised young Cat Cory Gregson’s second half. “These sort of wins, I reckon, can mean a lot to young guys and give them confidence.” A prognosis for Stokes (achilles) and Lonergan (concussion) is yet to be released by the football department. Jimmy Bartel was scheduled for surgery yesterday on a medial ligament tear, which has ruled him out for two months. Caddy was confident the 274-game veteran would bounce back. “He’ll come in and do everything right. We know he’s a professional and that’s why he's had such a good career.
NPL status at risk as Warriors seeking redemption By JOSIP ZILIC WITH a third of the season complete but only three points to show for their endeavour, North Geelong Warriors face a tough fight maintaining National Premier League status. Their opportunity for redemption starts tomorrow at Elcho Park when the Warriors host Oakleigh. Oakleigh went down to a well-drilled Heidelberg 1-0 last week in a match that must have featured some industrious defending given the winner scored eight goals the
week before. The Warriors, however, did themselves no favours against Northcote with a lethargic display for the majority of the match. Northcote was two up before the break thanks to Aron Handakas and Evan Kounavelis. North Geelong had the one Juso Julardzija effort that tested Northcote but few other opportunities. The opening 15 minutes teetered as either side struggled to settle in possession. Then at 18th minute Handakas worked his way around Daniel
Zilic to place his shot for the 1-0 lead. Northcote’s confidence stepped up again five minutes later when Handakas shot deflected to Evan Kounavelis, who wasn’t picked up by the linesperson in a clear offside position, and headed home. With the closing minutes of the first half approaching, North Geelong pushed forward searching for something to ignite its afternoon. Nathan Long surged forward after combining well through the middle to get around the defender with a terrific ball that beat the keeper.
The ball landed for Julardzija to punish but his header didn’t have enough power, allowing the lunging defender to clear off the line. Northcote took control in the second half, almost surging further ahead late on when Handakas again found the opening but shot straight at Zilic. With the closing minutes coming fast, the Warriors were unable to find enough cohesion and intensity to make an impact, their success mid week in the FFA Cup evidently wearing on them.

ELIJAH Walsh and brother Joseph fished the Swan Bay channel again last week, using fresh Australian salmon fillets to catch a 6kg gummy that fought hard in shallow water. The bay’s entrance hosted many anglers over the past week, with large numbers of King George whiting present. Tenderised squid caught the biggest fish, with the start of the run-out tide best. Anglers fishing Corio Bay encountered pinkie snapper to 50cm around structure such as boats moored off Western Beach. Soft plastics were effective, particularly three and four-inch Gulp minnows. The Barwon River estuary’s Sheepwash section produced mulloway to 80cm. Fishing the run-in tide was key, with baits such as live mullet or squid getting bites. Paul Blackborrow travelled down to Port Fairy in search of southern bluefin tuna. After setting out a spread of lures, a Rapala Xrap was quickly devoured by a tuna of 15kg. Paul continued fishing for the rest of the day, boating another tuna of similar size. Port Fairy has been popular for tuna this season, with the fish in relatively close to shore. The most popular method has been trolling hard-body or skirted lures but many anglers have been casting stick baits at surfacefeeding fish or micro jigging to tuna holding down deep. Anglers have noted that chang- GO WEST: Paul Blackborrow ing tactics has re- with a tuna. ally saved the day in some cases. Oliver Andrews spent time last Sunday chasing bream in the mouth of the Merri River. Casting Z-Man 2.5-inch grubs and Atomic hard-body lures, Oliver banked numerous bream, his best 33cm and 39cm. The dropping temperatures signalled the start of freshwater fishing for some anglers. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir received a lot of attention from anglers seeking big redfin. Darryl Luttrell spent a few hours walking the edges casting lures and banking a 40cm redfin for his efforts. Most anglers have noticed that sunset has yielded the most fish around the lake margins. Over at Lake Bullen Merri, William Patrick fished for trout during gentleman’s hours of 11am to 2pm. Setting up from the bank next to the boat ramp, he caught a pair of Chinook salmon and a football-shaped rainbow trout just over 1kg with Powerbait on a running-sinker rig. Reece Pitt and I visited Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree on Saturday afternoon, catching good numbers of brown trout to 1kg on hard-body lures such as Laydown Minnows and Smith Panish. Casting to the edges of the rowing lanes did the trick, with the last hour of light producing the most action. Eric Box travelled up to Lake Toolondo where he fished on one of Trevor Holmes’ Victorian Inland Charters boats. Fishing mudeyes around the submerged trees, Eric caught three brown trout averaging 2kg each. Joel Shipard went north-east to walk the Ovens River around Freeburgh. Joel found small stream trout willing to take both lure and fly, although taking his first trout on fly was a highlight. Over the next week anglers should try for whiting around the grass beds off Queenscliff, while the western district will hold fantastic numbers of tuna if the weather allows. Freshwater enthusiasts should try Lake Bullen Merri for Chinook salmon and trout.

BEWARE CARBON MONOXIDE – It is a silent killer warning to homeowners and landlords who have gas heating regarding the dangers of carbon monoxide. It is a colorless, odorless poisonous gas, which can be given off by your heater without you even knowing it.
A
There have been a number of deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning in Victoria in the past few years. Energy Safe Victoria is aware of the countless near misses where people have nearly died from carbon monoxide poisoning. It is mainly faulty or un-serviced gas heaters which can cause carbon monoxide to be produced, however if there are too many exhaust fans being used in the house, this can create a negative pressure down the heater flue which can also produce carbon monoxide when the heater is in use.
Old-style gas heaters are particularly likely to leak.
Energy Safe Victoria recommend that gas heaters be serviced by a licensed or registered gasfitter before the start of winter. The carbon monoxide reading must be less than zero parts per million (ppm)
thought. “It’s very alarming how many heaters we have disconnected being due to poor irregular servicing, to many exhaust fans or poor ventilation. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind to get a heater regularly serviced.”
