THIEVES who stole $90,000 worth of surf brand valuables from a store in Cranbourne Centro last month are believed to have been involved in robbing a surf clothes delivery truck in Narre Warren South just five days earlier. Thieves broke into Planet Surf, in the Cranbourne Centro shopping centre, through the store’s roof on Monday 23 March between 11pm and 7am the next morning, fleeing with roughly $90,000 worth of surf brand watches, wallets and sunglasses. It’s understood CCTV cameras weren’t operational at the time as the shopping centre was undergoing renovations. Five days earlier a truck – used to transport surf clothing to the Planet Surf store – was broken into while it was parked in Maple Leaf Avenue in Narre Warren South. The truck’s lock had been cut and roughly 15 to 20 boxes of Billabong and Hurley merchandise were stolen during the robbery, believed to have taken place between 5pm on Tuesday 17 and 4.30pm on Wednesday 18 March. A resident from Maple Leaf Avenue later reported seeing roughly 15 empty boxes strewn in a nearby front yard. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au.

CFA has the cramps
Shots fired at front of house
By GEORGIA WESTGARTH WITH space a major concern, Hampton Park CFA volunteers have to get changed in between the trucks and uniform hooks before undertaking emergency calls or training. “We can only do theory-based learning on site,” CFA captain Troy Smith said. Averaging 400 emergency calls a year, the Hampton Park CFA are calling for a new location to cater for the rising waiting list. “We have 20 volunteers on the waiting list to join,” Capt Smith said. “We haven’t turned back volunteers yet, but our membership base is growing and the current location can’t facilitate our members, we are very cramped as it is, into the future we may have to knock back volunteers,” he said. Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley said there was no room for growth. “Unfortunately their facilities are extremely small and outdated, lacking change rooms, adequate training areas, secure parking and everything is located within the one space, including equipment,” she said. The current arrangement of uniform hooks leaves new recruits’ overalls stored in the adjacent shed due to the lack of wall space in the main building. “New recruits have to go outside to get changed and in the shed, and in reality we would like to take more than three to four recruits on twice a year, but we can’t,” Capt Smith said. The CFA is forced to travel to industrial areas to train each week and most volunteers park on the side street and at the Robert Booth Reserve across the road due to limited parking on the premises. A volunteer of 16 years, Capt Smith said it had been spoken about since he started and had been a real concern for more than 10 years. “We’ve outgrown this facility for a
A GUNSHOT was fired into the front window of a home in Blind Bight on Sunday night. A car was seen driving away from the Fishermans Drive property around 9pm on Sunday 26 April after the shot was fired. An occupant of the house opened the front door after the shot was fired and saw a dark car driving off. No one was injured in the incident. but land needs to be secured as soon as possible,” he said. “We need to act before it’s too late; land availability in the area is very scarce, and we need to get land that’s available.” On Tuesday 14 April Ms Graley put in a constituency question to the Minister for Emergency Services Jane Garrett. “I have asked the minister to visit to not only meet with these wonderful volunteers but to also see the many challenges they face as they strive to protect
our community during its most difficult times,” she said. “However, I have been advised that the CFA does not have any immediate plans or funding allocated to replace or upgrade the Hampton Park fire station.” The team at the Hampton Park CFA are urging for immediate action in the coming 2015/2016 State Budget. “A lot of people have talked about moving us and upgrading us, but noone’s made the monetary commitment,” Captain Smith said.
Maddy’s friends gather together By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A SECOND rally for 20-year-old Maddison Murphy-West, who was found dead in her Pakenham home a year and a half ago, will be held at Casey Fields this Sunday to help raise funds for her son’s education. Maddy’s family, friends and loved ones will gather at the rally from 12.30 in memory of the smiling young woman who was found dead at her Ahern Road home in Pakenham on 23 October, 2013. Homicide squad detectives continue to investigate her death.
The anti-violence rally was first organised by Maddy’s friends last year after media reports emerged last year that she was allegedly physically assaulted in the year before her mystery death. As well as to her three-year-old son, Noah, some of the funds raised at the rally, organised this year by Maddy’s family, will also go towards victims of crime and domestic violence groups. Maddy’s mum, Paula, said the rally would always be a bittersweet memorial for her and her family. “You’ve just got to keep going,
that’s what Maddy would want anyway and that’s what the boys need,” she said. “Hopefully we get some nice weather and people roll up.” The ‘boys’ are Paula’s two-yearold son, Brydon, and Noah who she now has custody of. For more information, visit the Justice for Maddy Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ groups/657933000919370/ Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
THREE men have been charged after police raided a marijuana laboratory in Hallam last week. A 24-year-old, a 26-year-old and a 41-year-old were all arrested and charged with cultivating and trafficking a commercial quantity of cannabis after police raided the hydroponic lab on Monday 20 April. The men have been remanded in custody. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au

MORE than $100,000 worth of rare coins and jewellery was stolen from a house in Narre Warren North within half an hour. It’s understood the coins, valued at more than $50,000, were inside a safe which was taken from the Hillsley Avenue property sometime between 9.50pm and 10.15pm on Thursday 2 April. A substantial amount of jewellery was also stolen during the theft. It’s believed the raiders gained entry to the house by smashing a window.

WE REMEMBER THEM 1915-2015
Service draws massive crowd By GEORGIA WESTGARTH BOWED heads rose to the sky, as aircraft roared through the clouds above hundreds of locals who came to pay their respects on the Anzac Centenary. In Clydesdale Square on Saturday 25 April, the Cranbourne Anzac Day service had people spilling out onto High Street and over to Clydesdale Avenue. Cranbourne resident of 28 years, Sharyn Tilley, has attended the Cranbourne service for five years and said the turnout seemed bigger than usual. “I think it’s good to see so many people here, in spite of all that’s happened in the leadup everyone’s still coming out, paying their respects and doing the things they would normally do,” Ms Tilley said. “We are very multi-cultural and I think the turnout today reflects that,” she said. Only one lane was left for a slow stream of traffic on High street and the parade marched from Ritchies Supermarket to the cenotaph where the service was held from 10.30am. A local Irish pipe band played Waltzing Matilda as they led the march to the cenotaph. Sikh Volunteers Australia marched with a banner that
read, ‘Australian Sikh Community commemorating Sikhs and Aussies who laid down their lives,’ along with the Cranbourne Fire brigade, Cranbourne and Pearcedale Girl Guides, Casey district Scouts, St John ambulance, Cranbourne police and many more. The march set the scene for a poignant service presented by Cranbourne/Dandenong senior vice- president Bill Shepherd. Mr Shepherd reminded everyone of the men and women who served not only in Gallipoli but in the Battle of Fromelles and Bullecourt, the Korean War in the battle of Kapyong Springs and wars fought in Borneo, Malaya, New Guinea and Vietnam. “We remember the airmen who flew in hazardous missions over Europe in World War I, the gallant pilots who fought in the victory at Milne Bay, we remember the sailors and submariners who were away from home for long periods on hazardous missions fighting to keep the vital sea lanes open,” Mr Shepherd said. Cranbourne resident of nine years, Atesh Singh attended the service for the first time with his wife, young son and 11-year-old daughter who had been selected through St
Thomas the Apostle Catholic Primary School to attend the centenary service. “It’s important for our children to know the history and the culture and how the A fitting tribute in the sky by country developed, once they the Peninsula Aero Club. 138119 have been taught about the his- The sound of Anzac rang through Cranbourne. 138119 tory they like to come to these events because they understand the meaning,” Mr Singh said. Strike at kitchen By CASEY NEILL
to prepare food from sub-zero temperatures in freezers because there’s simply not enough room,” she said. HWU officials told the Journal that workers walked away from the kitchen between 10.30am and 2.30pm. “No one was allowed to touch the food. The majority of the food prep was left in an open room for over three hours,” a spokesman said. “In terms of food handling guidelines, generally it’s about 90 minutes. “This is danger zone in terms of food contamination, especially salmonella.”
MONASH Health has refused to confirm whether it threw away food left unattended during a kitchen strike last week - or served it up to patients. Health Workers Union (HWU) members walked off the job on Wednesday 22 April at the Kingston facility that produces meals for hospitals across the south east, including Dandenong and Casey. Union Secretary Diana Asmar said the move followed months of health and safety complaints that had “fallen on deaf ears”. “We’ve got members that have
He said the kitchen prepared about 9000 meals on an average day but Wednesdays was a ‘double production’ day. He said about 40 per cent of the day’s food was left sitting out during the strike - more than 7000 meals. “If you start giving patients food that hasn’t been prepared properly... then vulnerable patients could die,” Ms Asmar said. Monash Health spokeswoman Holly Gilligan said the hospital group “had to throw out a small amount of food in accordance with our strict food hygiene guidelines”.
She would not confirm how much food was affected or how the hospitals covered any shortfall in meals. “The safety of our patients and our staff is and continues to be Monash Health’s first priority, all food produced was produced in line with our approved Food Safety Plan,” Ms Gilligan said. “There was no impact at Dandenong Hospital, Casey Hospital or any other Monash Health site, all patients received their regular meals. “Our kitchen staff remained onsite during this time.”

Sure footing for path plan years, said the new footpath was a long time coming. “We had a meeting with Geoff about five years ago and everyone wanted it,” Mr Griffiths said. “I use the path three times a week and in winter it was very uncomfortable. “It will be great for people that don’t own a car, they can now get to the doctors in Cranbourne because there is no medical centre in Junction Village,” Mr Griffiths said. Cr Ablett’s next aim is to get more footpaths in Junction Village and hook up Mayfield Estate on the South Gippsland Highway with Lifestyle Casey Fields on Cameron Street. “I retired at 65, but I still walk, I love it, it’s great, you meet people along the way and as you get older you need the convenience,” Mr Griffiths said.

AFTER more than four years trekking through the winter sludge, Junction Village residents can now rely on solid footing on their way to Cranbourne. Half way there, the linking pathway from Junction Village to the heart of Cranbourne along the South Gippsland Highway was ready for use on Saturday 18 April and will be extended to Ballarto Road by July 2015. Councillor Geoff Ablett said residents had been concerned about the lack of a path for many years. “I’ve had quite a few complaints from residents in electric wheelchairs that were getting bogged in the colder months and now no matter the weather mums and prams, elderly, joggers and residents in wheel chairs can all use this footpath safely,” Cr Ablett said.
Granitic gravel was laid on the path which runs alongside the Avenue of Honour with no success more than four years ago. “It was fine in summer but with the amount of use it got it became a porridge in winter,” he said. Cr Ablett said other parts of Cranbourne including new estates received free walkways a part of the linking paths program which aims to deliver shared footpath connections across Casey. “This walkway was not a part of the linking paths program because there was nothing to link it to,” he said. “There’s something like 2000 homes in Junction Village that were cut off from Cranbourne services and people felt disconnected,” Cr Ablett said. He said the hallmark of Ron’s career is that he was a growth municipality engineer. “This was in three growth councils, Doncaster and Templestowe, Berwick, and Casey. “He was employed on key engineering projects associated with the rapid development of new municipalities, involving roads, bridges, sports grounds, and municipal buildings. “While there were many projects, he was a great advocate and supporter of Wilson Botanic Park in its early stages, and was very popular with fellow staff and councillors. “He was always willing to assist people across the organisation and had great empathy with community groups and clubs. “This was reflected in his personal involvement with community groups and sporting clubs, Mr Tyler said. Cr Morland said an integral part of Ron’s involvement with the Cities of Berwick and Casey was his support and involvement with the staff Social Club. “He is a life member of the club. “He also served on the Casey Cardinia Library Corporation, Cr Morland said.

HIGHLY respected Casey engineer, Ron Chidgey, was honoured with a mayoral reception and presented with a key to the City of Casey, to mark his retirement. Ron was recognised as an obliging officer, able and ready to help in the community, very often above the call of duty. Former mayors, officers, and community workers attended the function held in the civic centre on Friday 17 April. Casey Mayor Mick Morland presented Ron with the key and said he had been involved in some way with almost all projects in the Cities of Berwick and Casey during his 45-year local government career. “He is respected by councillors, staff, and the community, especially the volunteer groups, Cr Morland said. Casey chief executive Mike Tyler said Ron began his career with the City of Doncaster and Templestowe in January 1970. “This was before I started secondary school. “In 1973 he obtained his Diploma of Civil Engineering from Caulfield Institute of Technology, and on Monday 5 August 1974 began work as an engineer with the City of Berwick. “In 1980 he obtained what was then the ‘Holy Grail’ for council engineers, his municipal engineers qualification, and was appointed senior design engineer at Berwick, a senior staff appointment. “Following local government amalgamations, in July 1995 Ron was appointed manager technical services at Casey. “He was appointed community projects officer in the Community Services Division in July 1998. Mr Tyler said Ron returned to large project roots in September 2009 and took on a role in the Capital Works Programming Department.

Cops beef up security no criminal history, to be held in a maximum security prison. Causevic was held by police without charge for three days under a preventative detention order at Barwon Prison. It was the first time such an order had been exercised in Victoria. “He should be treated in the same way as any other remand prisoner,” Mr Stary said. “He should be housed in an appropriate remand facility, not in the state’s maximum security unit.” Reports have linked the three charged teenagers with Springvale’s Al-Furqan Islamic Centre in Springvale South, the same centre attended by Numan Haider who stabbed police and was shot dead outside Endeavour Hills police station last year. On Wednesday Al-Furquan announced it was permanently closing its doors. Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed last Tuesday 21 April that it would be alleged that multiple Anzac Day services were potentially being targeted and that “edged weapons” were involved. “That related to a specific threat to police members and by extension other members of the general public,” he said.

POLICE were armed at Anzac Day services throughout Casey on Saturday as thousands of people came to honour the fallen, undaunted by an alleged terrorist plot targeting services in Melbourne’s south-east. Only a week after details of the alleged terrorist attack surfaced, the Casey community gathered throughout Berwick, Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Pearcedale, and Tooradin to commemorate the special centenary of the Gallipoli landing. Twenty-four hours before Anzac Day, British police charged a 14-year-old UK boy with trying to incite beheadings and attacks on Australian Anzac Day commemoration services. The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London last Friday and was denied bail. UK prosecutors said the British teenager had incited someone “to carry out an attack at an Anzac parade in Australia with the aim of killing and/or causing serious injury to people“. “The second allegation is that on 18 March 2015, the defendant incited another person to behead someone in Austra-
lia,“ Deborah Walsh, deputy head of counter terrorism at the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service, said in a statement. The charges came after officers swooped on five Casey teenagers in morning raids on Saturday 18 April following a tip-off from British police. A 200-strong joint state and federal police counterterrorism team executed seven search warrants in Narre Warren, Hampton Park, Hallam and Eumemmerring as part of Operation Rising. As a result Harun Causevic of Hampton Park and Sevdet Ramdan Besim of Hallam were charged with conspiracy to commit acts done in preparation for, or planning, terrorist acts. A Narre Warren man, 18, is facing prohibited weapons charges. He was released on bail. Two other Narre Warren men, aged 18 and 19, were released without charge. Besim appeared briefly at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday 24 April and was further remanded. He and Causevic are expected to apply for bail on Thursday 30 April. Causevic’s lawyer Rob Stary told Channel 9 that it was inappropriate for his client, who had

Soccer surge By LACHLAN MOORHEAD CASEY council will set up a special soccer committee to help struggling clubs in the municipality. Earlier this month the council carried a motion for the Casey Association Football (Soccer) Reference Committee to be established by September this year, with meetings to be held twice a month. The motion was raised by Four Oaks councillor Rafal Kaplon in response to the “overwhelming pleas by representatives from clubs in his ward for extra resources to support the “skyrocketing growth of European football in the area. He said many soccer clubs in Casey were already using mul-
tiple reserves to cater for their growing playing lists and the council had now run out of allocation space. “Clubs are struggling to access enough oval sites due to the large numbers of players and teams they already have, and have already had to turn players back, Cr Kaplon said. Cr Kaplon said Berwick City Soccer Club, Endeavour Sporting Club and Endeavour United Soccer Club been left with no choice but to turn players away. “An Afghan community club wanted to set up in Casey and a Romanian club wanted to relocate to Endeavour Hills from Knox City Council but we haven’t been able to accommodate any new teams in the north
of the municipality, he said. “The truth is the whole Melbourne Metro Region is suffering a shortage of soccer facilities and Casey will be hardest hit with its booming population. “Therefore it was my sincere belief that the best approach forward is through a proactive rather than reactive process where council and the community can approach these issues together from a joint perspective. Casey councillors Rafal Kaplon, Rosalie Crestani, Susan Serey and Amanda Stapledon will be appointed to the reference committee. For more information, contact Casey Council on 9705 5200.

A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl has gone all the way to Casey council to have a dog park introduced to the municipality so her two pet huskies have somewhere safe to roam. Angelina Whinney-Smith submitted a 46-signature petition and a heartfelt letter to the council this month calling for a dog park to be set up in the municipality. Councillor Rosalie Crestani presented the petition to the council - which will look into the concept - and read out Angelina’s letter. Angelina, a Grade 4 student, wrote that she wanted an area in Casey she could take her two huskies to, Blizzard and Leiha, without worrying they would run off. “I think the community could benefit from this because it gives dogs the chance to safely run around and be free. This makes the dogs and owners happy,” Angelina wrote. “Lots of families can go and play there together with their dogs. We have two dogs, they are huskies, and we can’t let them off the lead or they run away. “I think lots of people would have dogs like this too, but a big playground like this would mean that those dogs have a safe lead free park, too.” Angelina’s mother, Jemma, said as far as she knew there are no specific dog parks in the municipality. Jemma said her daughter’s dog park idea had grown from

a vet when she grows up, wrote that she envisaged the park having an exercise playground for dogs, complete with tunnels, hurdles and ramps. “Dogs are an important part of the lives of our members of community and I think people would love living in this town with parks for their dogs,” she wrote. “Maybe we could set up a few of these parks in our council? I know lots of people who have dogs - almost all of my friends have them - and they think this is an awesome idea too.”

Urgent need for ninth life By GEORGIA WESTGARTH MOTHER cats being dumped after birth is a story 2nd Chance Cat Rescue founder Daniela Maslen hears all too often. On average, the private cat rescue organisation will have 30 to 50 cats and kittens in foster care. “We have a limit of 50 cats because we can’t afford to look after anymore if we aren’t selling them,” Ms Maslen said. A cat from 2nd Chance Cat Rescue will cost $200 and means the organisation can continue to rescue stray, injured and dumped cats. “We are keeping them for however long it takes to rehome them and I have to say no to more cats because I can’t afford to look after them and don’t have the space,” she said. Ms Maslen spends $140 a fortnight on dry food alone. “Because I have so many cats ready for adoption I have already invested all the money in them and can’t rescue anymore.” All of the money raised through fund-raisers and rehoming the cats goes towards food, kitty litter, medication, vet
bills, de-sexing, micro-chipping and a giveaway adoption pack. The team at 2nd Chance Cat Rescue held an adoption day on Saturday 11 April. “We had quite a few people attend but we went home with all our kittens,” Ms Maslen said. Currently, 2nd Chance Cat Rescue has 36 cats and kittens looking for a home and another 15 newborns that will be added to their growing list. “While shelters and pounds are re-homing older kittens and cats for free or at heavily discounted prices, as a private rescue we can’t follow this trend of giving a life away for free,” she said. Ms Maslen said cat colonies were a growing problem that merely culling can’t fix. “Culling the cats doesn’t help, you need to de-sex the animals and that’s where the problem stops, it’s a major problem in the City of Casey,” she said. City of Casey community safety manager Caroline Bell said all cats needed to be desexed and micro-chipped prior to registration under the Domestic Animals Act. “In addition, landowners within Botanic Ridge are pre-
cluded from owning or keeping cats,” Ms Bell said. The council, in conjunction with the Lost Dogs Home, runs reduced cost micro-chipping days twice a year but animal advocate Ms Maslen said: “The City of Casey gives people no incentive to de-sex cats apart from cheaper rates on microchipping. “People who don’t de-sex will most likely not register the animal either. Responsible pet ownership should be a must,” Ms Maslen said. “Kittens born in spring can have their own kitten in autumn. “It’s horrendous that baby kittens can be pregnant and having babies themselves, and I see this all the time. “Free de-sexing for cat owners or a discounted price for people that can’t afford it in Casey will stop the over population of cats in the area,” she said. The team at 2nd Chance Cat Rescue will attend an adoption day on Saturday 9 May at 10am to 5pm at Best Friends Pet Care Super Centre in Mornington. A raffle will be held on the day and hand-made cat themed cards will be available to buy.

Places to call home THE City of Casey council is developing a new housing strategy and is calling on the community’s ideas on how to best meet Casey’s future housing needs. A short survey is to be completed by Friday 29 May with an iPad mini and other prizes up for grabs. Residents are encouraged to share their stories which will serve as an important tool for the council in responding to the growing population and Casey’s changing housing needs. City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland said the council hopes to gain a better understanding of people’s housing choices and whether residential development in Casey is meeting the community’s needs. “The City of Casey remains one of the fastest growing regions in Australia and it is estimated that an additional 150,000 new residents will call Casey home from now until 2031,” Cr Morland said. Residents can get involved in the housing strategy by visiting caseyconversations.com.au/ housing.

Backpacks with love By GEORGIA WESTGARTH
Sally Ritter-Whelan with some much-needed backpacks ready to be picked up.
SHOES, pyjamas, a blanket and a toothbrush are just some of the items thousands of children and teenagers placed in foster and emergency care don’t have. Cranbourne resident and founder of Backpacks 4 Vic Kids, Sally Ritter-Whelan said most children were left with a garbage bag if anything. “When relocations occur most kids are often left with nothing, usually barely clothed, sometimes it’s just a pair of shorts they’re wearing or
1180169-KK15-15
a really soggy nappy,” Ms Ritter- Whelan said. Last year Ms Ritter-Whelan was shocked to hear the backpacks and nappy bags supplied to Victorian children and teenagers when relocated were packed, funded and transported from far north Queensland. “After hearing that Backpacks for Aussie Kids in far north Queensland, who are in their sixth year, were trying to meet the needs of Victoria as well, I decided I would start Backpacks 4 Vic Kids in November, with a vision to supply nappy bags and back packs to children aged 0 to 17.” The independent body linked with their sister organisations in South Australia and Goondi, far north Queensland are not for profit organisations working closely with agencies that place children in care. Ms Ritter-Whelan said the backpacks and nappy bags were given to the carer when the child arrived at their new location to help them settle in. “Our aim is to support the carers to make the first 24 to 48 hours easier on them and lighten the load on heavily overworked social welfare officers, and of course our main focus is to give the kids something to help ease the trauma of transition and relocation, something to cuddle and something to keep them warm,” Ms RitterWhelan said. The packing and sorting is all done out of a purpose-built room in Ms Ritter-Whelan’s home. “It’s been fitted out with cupboards and shelves and we organise the packs by age group,” she said. Backpacks include a blanket, soft toy, shampoo and conditioner, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, a hairbrush, deodorant, three pairs of new undies, two sets of clothes, one set of pyjamas, a torch and more. “We expect this to grow very quickly - based on the response from agencies in the last week, it appears that our goal of 600 backpacks in the first year will be well exceeded,” she said. The Backpacks 4 Vic Kids mission has asked to be expanded by agencies to include children in refugees and those that are still monitored by services under home parenting. Ms Ritter-Whelan said the high rate of children in foster care was a major concern. “Victoria is in a crisis because the need for care is increasing each year and the registration of foster carers is decreasing,” she said. The filled backpacks are ordered from the Victoria Police, the Department of Human Services and foster care agencies statewide with all items donated or fund-raised by Backpacks 4 Vic Kids. Ms Ritter-Whelan said she was hoping more people thought about their ability to foster care or consider respite for a weekend or a month. “It’s surprising who has the capacity to foster care - a university student living in an apartment had the ability to foster and did,” she said. A sausage sizzle at the Cranbourne Bunnings Warehouse at 1205 Thompsons Road will be held on Monday 8 June. To donate, visit Backpacks 4 Vic Kids on Facebook.

Tiger pounces By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE Richmond Football Club’s community development initiative ‘Tiger Paw’ roared into the Casey Indoor Leisure Centre in partnership with the YMCA on Wednesday 22 April for a day of fitness activities and nutrition. Cranbourne South Primary School and St Mary’s Primary School were treated to a look inside the life of an AFL footballer and heard stories of resilience and overcoming challenges from Richmond defender, Steven Morris. Casey Indoor Leisure Centre
manager, Tony Jackson said the fantastic day was a well-rounded approach to exposing primary aged school children to life as an elite athlete. “The students were split into two groups and got to do a lot of physical activity, running, aerobics, ball, hand eye and foot skills and were timed and tested on how high they could jump,” Mr Jackson said. Approximately 150 school children attended the day and discussed multicultural awareness and the importance of eating healthy.
Staff from Richmond’s community development team and assistant coaching staff attended the day. “The students listened to Steven Morris talk about his real life challenges and how he wasn’t drafted, the pressures he felt coming from a successful sporting family, his injures and how a level of resilience is necessary to overcome setbacks,” Mr Jackson said. The speakers also touched on sport science and sport psychology. “It was a fantastic day,” Mr Jackson said.

AGENTS ON THE BIKES... THE opportunity to embrace a truly worthwhile cause was recently put to the team at First National Neilson Partners. A decision was taken to field a team of riders in this year’s Peter Mac Ride to Conquer Cancer - a two-day, 200km bike ride with each individual participant committing to raise $2500. Importantly, all funds raised will go directly to the Peter MacCallum centre, Australia’s only public hospital dedicated to cancer research and treatment. The team of riders hope to exceed the team target of $25,000. They are tremendously grateful to their families, friends and clients who have chosen to support them to date, and at the time of writing are the top Victorian fundraising team. On 22 May, the team will be holding a fund-raising event at D’Angelo’s Estate Vineyards at Officer. The wine tasting and food event will

UNPRECEDENTED land sales and perfect positioning see Abiwood’s Clydevale estate leading the charge in the developing suburb of Clyde North as it becomes the popular new location for homebuyers in Melbourne’s south east. More than 180 blocks of land have been snapped up since the development’s launch in December 2014 as buyers have recognized the perfect combination of lifestyle and location Clydevale offers, making it the ideal new community to call home. Searching for the ideal home to complement a block of land can be a daunting process for first or second homebuyers which is why Clydevale will house a generous and innovative 42 home display village boasting all the latest designs from many of Melbourne’s best builders, set to open in 2016. Abiwood’s Clydevale incorporates three precinct areas, the Azure Precinct, Magenta Precinct and the soon to be released Auburn Precinct - and is a dominating presence with a total area covering an impressive 80 hectares of Clyde North. Construction has already commenced on the first stages of the Clydevale Azure Precinct, including the future display village area. An outdoors life is encouraged at Clydevale - with more than 12 hectares dedicated to parks, gardens, waterways and beautifully landscaped open space. Parks, ponds and playgrounds will delight the children while kilometers of walking and bike tracks provide for inspiring outdoor exercise and adventure. A quality early education centre and an indoor swimming centre will add to the lifestyle. WE REMEMBER THEM 1915-2015
Anzac legacy passes to next generation By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CRANBOURNE high school students took it upon themselves to organise and speak at an Anzac ceremony for Grade 6 primary school children. Sixteen Year 11 Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) students from Alkira Secondary College ran the ceremony at Hillsmead Primary school on
Monday 27 April. The day is a part of the VCAL students course and is included in the ‘oracy for practical purposes’ outcome, VCAL co-ordinator Ms McCallion said. “It helps increase our students’ confidence to speak in public and their ability to make lasting relationships with a variety of people.” Special guests included five
war veterans, MPs Judith Graley and Jason Wood and the president of the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Michael Newbond. Ms McCallion said the annual event was a great opportunity to develop a positive relationship between the two schools and for the VCE and Grade 6 students to show their respect.
“It is important for students to reflect upon and understand the sacrifice of those men and women who fought and are still fighting for their country, particularly at this century landmark,” Ms McCallion said. “It also allows our students to pass on the knowledge and understanding they have gained through working closely with veterans onto younger students,” she said.

THE picturesque Memorial Gardens in Tooradin were the perfect setting for a moving Anzac service on Saturday morning. The memorial was a joint effort between the Tooradin Foreshore Committee and the Kooweerup RSL. Veterans began the service by marching over the bridge and into the gardens, headed by a bagpiper. Celebrant Tracy Barker conducted the service, with speakers from Kooweerup RSL and a Cerberus Flag Team in attendance. Jeff Stokes read The Ode and listed the names of the fallen, and John Camilleri did the blessing and read The Lord’s Prayer. The captains and vice-captains of Tooradin Primary School delivered a moving message on the importance of remembering the legacy of the Anzacs. Students Lily Howes, Lochlain Van der Valk, Hannah Sellings and Sam MacDonald were then involved in the planting of a lone pine commemorative tree. They were presented with a book and certificate from Tooradin Foreshore Committee president Lindsay Mitchell. War memorabilia including hats, posters and photo albums were on display, and families were invited to lay poppies. Local sporting teams were well represented and the Tooradin Fire Brigade was also present. Gary Bould of the foreshore committee said the service was a fitting tribute. “It was well-attended and everyone was very respectful, just a really good day. “Credit must go to both the Tooradin Foreshore Committee and the Kooweerup RSL who had devoted about six months of organisation.”

HAIR & BEAUTY COURSES
THE South East Local Learning and Employment Network and the City of Casey put together a successful and hands-on Careers Expo and Try a Trade event on Tuesday 21 April. “It was fantastic we had around 3200 students attend with a big range of different exhibits, half of them being interactive,” work placement co-ordinator at South East Local Learning and Employment Network Mandy Stevens said. Students from schools throughout Casey and Cardinia had the chance to make pizza, roll dough, make ice cream, rock climb, plaster and lay bricks as well as planting as part of the horticulture exhibits, and sit on army trucks. Ms Stevens has worked with the expo since it started six years ago and said 400 students attended in year one. “Every year it’s grown, and we really tried to make this an interactive expo. “If it’s more engaged the students remember more and we had lots of giveaways, it’s an exciting day for all the students from Year 9 to Year 12,” she said. Along with interactive activities, universities and Tafe providers were available to speak with students about courses and the day offered information on
Craig Gambetta from Holmesglen gives some bricklaying tips to student Magor. music, design, health, community services and local councillors were also present. “Councillors were talking to students about jobs within the council and we had both local mayors, Cr Mick Morland and Cr Leticia Wilmot, come along and a short film was made to go on the council’s website,” Ms Stevens said. The annual event is set to continue to grow, Ms Stevens said. “A lot of kids don’t like travelling into the city and they miss out on the careers expos, it’s great that we have all these providers coming out to the south-east for our kids.”
Ms Stevens said even locals who had seen the event being advertised came along. “Next year it will be bigger and better, we are hoping to get more sponsors and even more room to fit more activities and hire marquees for more exhibits,” she said. Ms Stevens said the hospitality exhibits were always a big hit as well as fixing the motors in the automotive exhibit. “The day gives kids the opportunity to try things before they choose a course and find out what’s available and they get to make more informed decisions,” she said.

KHAN Hazara has no shortage of drive but there’s one ultimate goal that has even eluded him. The Eumemmering refugee and now Australian citizen - is a father of three in his mid-twenties who put in 120-hour weeks to build a small bakery into his own Halal-food supermarket Dandy Mart. He scoured Australia for a suitable site but settled close to home in 2012 - finding a good position and a lot of loyal customers in Hampton Park. He’s now happy with the business, scaling his working week to five days and sponsoring a range of community groups and festivals. But the one missing piece in his life is his family - his mother, his wife and children. The Afghan refugees are still stranded dangerously in Quetta, Pakistan, where their Hazara ethnicity makes them potential targets for persecution and bombings. Despite his desperation, his application for them to reunite with him in Australia has foundered. His latest advice from a migration lawyer is a wait of up to 12 months. “I call them every single night. I just hope to find some ways to get them here.
Khan Hazara outside his Dandy Mart supermarket. 137152 Picture: GARY SISSONS “The family (reunion) application... no one understands it. “When you ask them, they say the application is in the queue. “They say first bring your (immediate) family and then you can apply for your mum. “It’s really annoying. I don’t want mum to be left there by herself.” Khan has visited them four times since arriving in Australia. At times he risked being unable to return here since “there were no guarantees on a permanent visa”. He’s since remedied that situation by becoming an Australian citizen. Last week, he set off to see them again as the final leg of a business trip to Dubai,
China and Thailand. Khan arrived in Australia as a refugee in 2009 after a gruelling clandestine trip through Malaysia and Indonesia. Luckily for him his detention on Christmas Island was brief. He realises many “like me” are languishing for uncertain durations in Manus Island and Nauru detention centres. He also knows many local refugees of his age remain “lost” without a vocation and beset by financial problems and mental health issues, he said. “Hazaras have been killed for so long - it affects your mind. “You don’t come here to make money, but save your life.”

Lauren’s leading from the front By JARROD POTTER THERE has been no greater honour in Lauren Hojnacki’s Youth Girls journey than pulling on the Vic Metro jumper and proudly representing her state. So you can only imagine just how much it means to the 18-year-old from Berwick to also be appointed that side’s cocaptain. Leading her state is the apex of her football achievements so far in a long-and-successful Youth Girls career and she can’t wait to lead the side out against the rest of Australia. “I was pretty stoked to get the good news,” Hojnacki said. “I was a bit shocked - I didn’t expect it at all - and to be called to head up the leadership group for the first time was a big achievement as well because I was so happy to get into the team again for the third year. “Even more stoked to get to lead out the girls.” There’s only one objective from the campaign for Hojnacki - regaining the national championship that was lost last year to West Australia. “Definitely to get the win and have that experience now that I know what it’s like and know what I have to do to make sure the team comes out on top again and become national champions,” Hojnacki said. “Hopefully I’ll be a ruck slash key forward maybe even key back - but I do love playing centre-half forward to centrehalf back as much as possible.” The Beaconsfield Junior Football Club’s star utility is also part of the Dandenong Stingrays Youth Girls Academy. She has one hope for the final year of a highlight-filled Youth Girls career - claiming a three-peat in the South East Juniors Youth Girls competition

Tayla Hughes is leaping for joy after winning a Little Athletics state championship. 137624 Picture: JARROD POTTER with her beloved Eagles. “With all the hard training and hard work we’ve gone through in pre-season, getting to know each other and all the new girls - we definitely deserve it as we’ve definitely bonded well as a group, better than we have last year, and it’s showing on the
field,” Hojnacki said. Hojnacki and the Vic Metro side head to Mandurah, Western Australia, this weekend with the championships running from 4-9 May. She wanted to thank her parents for their unwavering support.
Cavaliers axe coach Parker By JARROD POTTER CASEY Cavaliers are on the hunt for a new Big V women’s team coach after the Casey Basketball Association severed ties with Tim Parker. Citing a breakdown in the working relationship between the coach and club, Casey Basketball Association sacked the coach after one-year, despite signing him to a two-year deal late in 2014. In a statement from the club, Casey Basketball Association confirmed: “This decision was extremely difficult, given that we are partly through the season, however, after considering all the facts, it was felt in the best interests of the Association that the decision be made now rather than later”. Parker coached the Cavaliers for 2014 and the first five games

HOP, step and jumping her way on to the top of the Little Athletics Victoria podium, Tayla Hughes has earned her second state win in as many years in her beloved triple-jump. While others lean towards the other jumping codes and running in junior athletics, Cranbourne Little Athletics Club (CLAC) rising star Hughes prefers the technical nature of triple-jump. Gravitating towards the hop, step, jump has paid off for the 13-year-old from Frankston South, as her best mark - a highflying 10.83m - was enough to take home the gold medal at the recently held Little Athletics
Victoria State Track and Field Championships. “I won it last year as well and wanted to still get the gold again this year,” Hughes said. “I was happy to win it backto-back. “To begin with I never really had trouble learning triplejump, lots of people find it hard, but I just liked it.” Tayla also finished seventh in the long jump to cap off a stellar meet at Albert Park. She switched from Frankston to Cranbourne a year ago - when track-works forced Frankston athletes to move to Springvale - but since coming across to Casey Fields she has grown fond of the team and
hopes to stay even when the track-works have been completed at Frankston. “The main reason we moved is because when the track was getting resurfaced, Frankston was going to Springvale… because it had one jumping pit, they were having less jumps,” Hughes said. “I like doing more jumping events, so I moved to Cranbourne just before the start of the season. “I’m pretty sure we’ll stay with Cranbourne.” Hughes wanted to thank her grandparents, Tom and Jenny, Cranbourne Little Athletics Club and her coach Paul for their support.

Scorpions go stingless By JARROD POTTER
Narre Warren and Cranbourne kicked off the under-12 Youth Girls' season in a new chapter for South East Juniors football. 138186
Youth Girls kick off season THE next chapter in Youth Girls football kicked off on Sunday morning with the South East Juniors (SEJ) commencing its under-12 girls’ competition. As part of its expansion of the Youth Girls’ competition the South East Juniors have expanded the opportunities for young, female footballers in the south east. The players were up and about and took to the field at Pakenham for their first sanctioned matches on Sunday, as Beaconsfield, Timbarra, Cranbourne and Narre Warren played two games apiece at the SEJ’s Little Demons Day. SEJ General Manager Shaun Connell said the under-12 girls’ competition was a booming success so far and any clubs that are interested in putting sides into the competition this year can still do so throughout the season. “We’re looking forward to the continual growth of under-12 girls in this area - it’s
Beaconsfield's Jasmine Nation celebrated her first under-12 Youth Girls' goal in amazing style. 138186 Pictures: JARROD POTTER one of our key strategies in building the Youth Girls’ competition,” Connell said. “Been a lot of hard work
by the clubs that have got it going, and we’d be happy to add teams to it throughout the year, so if anyone is interested, feel free to contact us.” “We have one of the highest rates of female participation in mixed football or female football and to be introduced to Youth Girls through the under-12 girls’ competition is another big goal for us. “Our ultimate aim is to have under-12, under-15, and under-18’s Youth Girls’ competitions and since we’re the oldest youth girls’ competition in Australia, we need to continue to underpin our growth by making it easier for girls to get involved at an ageappropriate level.” For more information about pulling on the boots as the next SEJ Youth Girls’ champion, or helping to get your daughter involved with Youth Girls’ football - contact the South East Juniors at operations@southeastjuniors. com.au or on 5995 0555.

VFL REVIEW - ROUND 2 SQUANDERING its shots, Casey Scorpions can only blame itself for a 24-point defeat to the reigning VFL premiers Footscray. Heading to Whitten Oval on Sunday, Casey failed to make the most of its trip out west as behinds proved costly in the 10.13 (73) to 15.7 (97) loss. The nimble Doggies conversely excelled in front of the big sticks and made everyone aware the side has the means and desire to go back-to-back. With only three behinds to
their name through the first term, as the wind buffeted the oval, Casey started to turn the tides in a mixed-blessing second quarter. The Scorpions kick three-goals-five to reduce the margin to 14 at the main break as Cam Pedersen - who is relishing his time up forward got the scoreboard ticking over with a three goal haul. Coach Justin Plapp rearranged the decks as the Scorpions’ prospects began sinking, with key defender Jack Hutchins becoming a key forward. The gamble worked as the former Gold Coast Sun booted two to bring the margin back to 40 at the last break.
The tailwind helped Casey jag another four-goals-five in the final term, but swirling their shots in-and-around the goals and conceding reckless free kicks was too much to overcome as the Bulldogs celebrated their first win of the season at the expense of the Scorpions. In his best match for Casey thus far, Jimmy Toumpas (28 disposals) relished his chance to shine through the midfield while Jack Grimes, Dean Terlich and Aidan Rile all put their hand up for Melbourne selection with impressive efforts. Essendon will host Casey at Windy Hill on Sunday from 3pm.

JOCs mount premiership case By JARROD POTTER VAFA DIVISION 2 - Round 3 STORMING home to mount its case for a VAFA premiership, St John’s brushed aside South Melbourne Districts in a 171-point demolition. From the first bounce the Doveton-based football side were in control and it only got worse from there for the Swans as Ben McGee’s men ran circles around the visitors. A nine-goal second term led by Aaron Thornton (seven goals), Kane Arnold (six goals) and Rohan Scott (five goals) spelled the end for South Melbourne Districts before the pain was amplified even further. The only downside for St John’s - despite the ebullient win - was its kicking conversion as 25 behinds remains far too many for a side with premiership aspirations. Skipper Glenn Costas - with a casual four goals to his name as well - was best afield while Scott and Liam O’Connor also featured prominently. Sitting second with three wins and a healthy percentage of 247.02, St John’s faces Elsternwick away on Saturday. SFL - DIVISION 2 THE move to SFL is paying off handsomely for Keysborough, with its 15-point win over Hampton rocketing the Burra to

In tough conditions at Rowley Allan Reserve, the Burra held their nerve to hunt down the visitors, who took a ninepoint lead at the half. Only three-behinds flew through the sticks in a roughand-tumble last term, but Keysborough was able to hold its lead to post its third win in as many SFL matches. Tyson King (five goals), Geoff Humphreys and Cameron Dalton were best afield as Keysborough now heads to Caulfield on Saturday in a firstversus-third showdown. 69-point hammering by Skye. In Division 3, Endeavour Hills and Hallam were vanquished in the rain Endeavour Hills tasted its first loss in 2015 as Carrum Patterson Lakes took a 39-point triumph. The Falcons were led by Shane Peake (five goals) while Shannon Rainey and Nathan Strom also excelled. Hallam - led ably by a fivegoal effort from up-and-comer Matt Neve - was no match for Moorabbin, and conceded a 20-point loss. Chris Molnar, Corey Reeves and Matt Melrose were also in the best as a dogged last-term fight back, fell just short.

ROC's Sarah Smith handled the wet conditions with ease at Toomuc Reserve during the Kangaroos' B Grade win over Pakenham. 138109 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
By DAVID NAGEL CRANBOURNE and Pakenham may have scored impressive Anzac Day victories on the weekend but this Saturday’s part-two of round three in the South East Football League will provide us with a clearer understanding of the season ahead. The split-round of matches began with Cranbourne suffocating the life out of Tooradin, conceding just two goals on its way to a 44-point victory at Casey Fields, while Pakenham continued a perfect start to the season with a clinical 57-point dissection of ROC at Toomuc Reserve. Cranbourne’s midfield of Mat Fletcher, Brad Hermans and Max Gearon proved too strong for the Seagulls, who had Michael Wallace and Adam Galea play terrific games down back to limit the damage. Meanwhile, Pakenham had too many stars for the Kangaroos to nullify, with forwards Daniel Fry and Jake Smith joining defender Nathan Brown on the best players’ list. Matt Clarke was a shining light for the Kangas with four goals. But both of those results were expected, this week we get answers to some intriguing questions when Beaconsfield host Doveton at Holm Park Reserve and Berwick rolls out the welcome mat for Narre Warren. Is Doveton any good? The Doves, who took top honours in the recruiting stakes this pre-season, are undefeated after three rounds but could quite easily be languishing. Having survived a scare against Hampton Park in the season opener they’ve fallen across the line against Tooradin and ROC, and that form, let’s be honest, it didn’t stack up too well on the weekend. The obvious highlight of this clash is going to be the battle in the ruck between Doveton’s Frankstonrecruit Russell Gabriel and Beaconsfield’s Scott Meyer - Gabriel, the winner of the Norm Walker Medal in his only season with the Doves back in 2009, against the winner of the last two years. This contest would sit comfortably on any VFL or interstate venue outside the AFL, the magnificently athletic Meyer taking on the brute-strength and ringcraft of a man who has been there and done it all before. These blokes are seriously good! Doveton will tag Beaconsfield skipper Daniel Mislicki with Jordan Temopoulos, but the spread of a group that includes Tyson Mitchem, Damien Johnston and Kane Hughes will be enough to get the Eagles across the line. Berwick will be looking for its first win of the season when it welcomes the Magpies to Edwin Flack Reserve. The Wickers have been competitive against last year’s grand finalists -Beaconsfield and Cranbourne - in the opening two rounds of the season, but will need to turn around a seven-game losing streak against the Magpies that dates back to 2011. For Berwick to win, it needs to find more avenues to goal with Mitch Johnson the only Wicker to have kicked more than two goals for the season. They need more scoreboard pressure to be applied from their elite midfielders like Ash Smith, Michael Riseley and Ben Kearns, while Jordy Andrews should be getting back to his best after an injury interrupted pre-season. Narre’s talls, like Andrew Hunter, Corie Intveen, Jordyn Flannery and Jake Richardson should have enough of an impact to get the Magpies across the Cranbourne full-forward Marc Holt was well held by Tooradin youngster Michael Wallace line. Coach unveils training squad for clash By DAVID NAGEL SOUTH East Football League interleague coach Michael ‘Jock’ Holland has announced an initial training squad of 52 players for the clash against Sunraysia at Casey Fields on Saturday 23 May. The game follows an under-19 encounter between the two leagues and will be followed by the VFL clash between Casey Scorpions and Richmond at 6pm. The Demons are undefeated in three outings with wins over the Nepean, Wimmera and Bellarine leagues and need to win to claim a top-10 ranking in the state. The squad will train at Beaconsfield’s Holm Park Reserve on Wednesday 6, Wednesday 13, Tuesday 19 and Thursday 21 May, with all sessions starting at 6.30pm.
THE SQUAD BEACONSFIELD Daniel Battaglin, Scott Meyer, Taylor Joyce, Troy McDermott, Ben Kerrigan, Damien Johnston and Daniel Johnston. BERWICK Jordy Andrews, Michael Harold, Madi Andrews, Ash

DOVETON Jarrad Boumann, Russell Gabriel and Frank D’Agostino. HAMPTON PARK Billy Thomas, Nathan Allan and Luke Nunan. NARRE WARREN Dylan Quirk, Matt Lee,
Kerem Baskaya, Kain Baskaya, Ben Wragg, Michael Collins, Ryan Morrison, Jake Richardson and Ben King. PAKENHAM Russell Lehman, Steve O’Bryan, Dean Blake, Jason Fisher, Troy Toussaint, Jake Smith and Nathan Brown. ROC Blair Allan, Matt Clarke, James Canty and Matt Rogers. TOORADIN Matt Wade, Ryan White, Agape Patolo, Kyle Van Der Pluym and Adam Galea.
Eagles’ cracking win By DAVID NAGEL IT has huffed and it has puffed but it couldn’t blow the house down ... until Saturday that is ... Cranbourne finally got reward for its effort with a 32-goal win over Tooradin at Casey Fields. The Eagles - under new-coach Simon O’Shanassy - have already shown enough to suggest they’ll be there when the whips are cracking at the pointy end of the season. But a round one draw with Narre Warren, and then a three-goal loss to Berwick - both perennial finalists mind you - had left the Eagles feeling a little underwhelmed with their return. They sorted that out with a dominant performance against the Seagulls on Anzac Day. “We need to put things in perspective, and not get carried away, but it was great to get a win on the board,” O’Shanassy said. O’Shanassy has some very talented young players at his disposal. His young goal-shooting combination of Amy Paulsen and Monalisa Groom -a former all New Zealand junior - is coming together nicely, fed beautifully by Jess O’Hanlon. Natalie Sparks and Sam Kelly are two 17-year-olds on the rise, while Tara Cecil and Alanah Hardy add polish, being two of the better players in the league. “Tara’s a great defender, everyone in the league knows that, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player like Alanah who can play in any position on the court,” O’Shanassy said. The Eagles’ head-honcho said this could be one of the most even seasons on record. “It’s a great competition this season, with six or seven teams who have a realistic chance to play finals,” he said. Tooradin has now suffered two hefty defeats, but with Alexandra Duff, Alice Ditchfield and Shona Wells leading the way it should be back in the winners circle in no time. It was more like an Anzac Day Torvill and Dean Spectacular than a netball match when Pakenham rolled ROC by 14 goals at Toomuc Reserve. The famous British ice-dancers would have been proud, as players from both sides skated their way around a playing surface that could only be described as unsafe. The game was called off mid way through the third term when both teams agreed that the courts were far too dangerous to continue playing on. All four participants from the weekend now have a break as Berwick, Beaconsfield, Doveton and Narre Warren complete round three this Saturday, while Hampton Park has the bye.

Cavaliers bouncing in By JARROD POTTER
Fresh out of umpires By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Gippsland Umpires Association is struggling that badly for numbers, that local footy is starting to be threatened. That’s the warning from GUA president Chris Behrendorff, who said the numbers of people leaving the game are affecting the umpiring ranks, as well as playing stocks. The association, which officiates over the Ellinbank and District Football League, Gippsland League, Warragul and District Junior Football league, and the AFL Gippsland Youth Girls Football League, is on the hunt for up to 50 more umpires across the field, goal, and boundary disciplines. “We struggled badly for numbers to start the season,” Behrendorff told the Gazette. “30 to 40-year-old guys fresh out of footy are really who we want. “They’re who we’re really looking for and we’re calling out for people to come and do it. “There are umpires at every club and if they did games other than their own clubs’ we’d have the right numbers, but then the clubs would be losing great club people… we’re trying to solve this problem for everyone.” Behrendorff said, when it came down to it, the GUA would provide umpires to every grade they physically could. “We’ve got a lot of loyal umpires - some will even put their hands up to do four games in a weekend,” he said. But Behrendorff admitted reserves’ players were currently suffering. “Club umpires are being used, and people will question their decisions,” he said. “It’s a combination of our experienced guys getting too old to meet the demands of umpiring senior footy, and our young umpires not being experienced enough to take their place. “We don’t have the luxury of fielding young umpires with experienced ones because there just aren’t enough of them. “I don’t doubt the football community appreciates the important role umpires play every weekend, but perhaps they don’t quite understand the seriousness of the situation.” As an added incentive, AFL Gippsland is offering a free double-pass to select AFL games during the 2015 premiership season for the first 30 umpires to register with the GUA or Sale Umpires Association before Friday, 29 May. For more information, visit the GUA website, contact GUA president Chris Behrendorff on 0412 036 689, or visit www.aflgippsland.sportingpulse.net. QUIZ NUMBER 1450 ANSWERS: 1. Martin Guptill 2. BOUNCING back in the best way possible, Casey Cavaliers men stole the show from ladder leaders La Trobe in a 78-71 Big V Division-1 triumph. Paying respect to the Anzacs before the match, the Saturday night clash held significant meaning for both sides as they went about putting on a spectacle for everyone who crammed into Casey Indoor Leisure Centre. Casey flew out of the blocks to leave the Energy sapped - posting a 46-29 lead at the main break as Matt Witherden (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Lester Strong (10 points, 8 rebounds) pushed their opponents aside. La Trobe surged in the second half to ensure it wouldn’t be all smooth sailing for Stewart Baird’s brigade, but even a 17-point turnaround in the third term wasn’t enough to discharge the Cavaliers. They would hold on through the final term to take a seven-point win and push back towards the middle of the table in Division 1’s Watson Conference. With an absolute
logjam from third to seventh, the Cavaliers’ conference is shaping to be hotly contested in the race for finals as the Casey men face one of the harder weekends on the BIG V calendar this weekend. They take a road trip to Shepparton on Saturday night for the Division 2 grand-final rematch before scrambling back home on Sunday afternoon to battle Warrandyte from 3pm. The Cavaliers women had a tumultuous week - with coach Tim Parker sacked by the Casey Basketball Association prior to the weekend - but it didn’t affect the Casey ladies on-court, who rallied to take a 55-52 win over Mornington. Sammie Johnson (12 points, 10 rebounds) hit her straps - posting her third double-double in the midst of a breakout season - while Amy McFarlane (12 points, 4 assists) and Bec Magdich (9 points, 4 rebounds) were also prominent on the scoresheet. Casey women’s team has a bye this weekend before facing Blackburn at home in the second incarnation of the Cavaliers’ Ballin’ for Breast Cancer triple-header.
Matt Witherden's double-double against La Trobe helped spur a Cavalier-upset over the fast-moving Energy. 136083 Picture: JARROD POTTER
Game on for fresh faces: Tigers claw back By RUSSELL BENNETT LANG Lang is still yet to record its first win of the senior Ellinbank and District Football League season, but from where the club has come from in recent seasons these Tigers are looking stronger and decidedly bolder. New player-coach Shane Urbans has come across from Fish Creek and is just one of an influx of new players at the showgrounds which includes Luke Damon, also from Fish Creek, Travis Reints from the Frankston Bombers, and Geoff Hibberd and Luke Forsyth from Chirnside Park. All told, there are well over a dozen fresh faces in and around the senior side in a dramatic overhaul of last season’s set-up at the Tigers den. With Brad Palmer also back at the club from Pearcedale, a snowball effect led to a host of peninsulabased players coming across. And while the Tigers have en-

on the track and that breeds excitement,” Urbans told the Gazette recently. “A lot of the young blokes have lifted their intensity and are pushing the older blokes along. It’s been really good. “Boppa (Aaron Creasey) is our senior captain, and T-Mac (Troy

Purpose behind the pink CASEY Netball will pink up for Breast Cancer Network Australia’s annual Pink Sports Day with a round of matches to be played from Monday 4 to Sunday 10 May. Pink Sports Day is an opportunity for sporting groups around Australia to show their support for, and pay tribute to, people in their local community who have been affected by breast cancer. All money raised through Pink Sports Day will go directly to BCNA to help ensure Australians affected by breast cancer receive the very best support, information, treatment and care. BCNA CEO Christine Nolan said Pink Sports Day was a chance for sporting communities to raise awareness and support for local women affected by breast cancer.
“More than 15,000 women in Australia are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. These women - mothers, wives, daughters, sisters and friends - need to know that they are supported,” Christine said. “By taking part in Pink Sports Day, Casey Netball is helping to ensure their local women know that they are not alone in their breast cancer journey, while also raising awareness of the support services available.” Casey Netball urges the local community to get behind the Pink Sports Round at Casey Netball. “Pink Sports Day is a great opportunity for the whole community to head down to our Casey Netball and support not just the teams competing on the day, but also to show support for locals affected by breast

He has again laced up the boots this season for a role in the Tigers midfield, but his focus is on developing the club’s promising youngsters. “Myself and a few of the blokes I’ve brought across have had success, so we know what that’s like and we want it again. "We’re still hungry and, hopefully, the young blokes feed off that,” he said. The Tigers will look to kick-start their season this Saturday at home against Poowong from 2pm.
