‘Partisan pettiness’ blamed as mayor snubbed again GREAT DIVIDE: Premier Daniel Andrews is keeping Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons out of the picture at various public announcements regarding the Geelong region.
Dan dumps Darryn By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE LABOR State Government has snubbed Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons again, this time for a crucial Jetstar announcement at Avalon. The snub was “petty and partisan”, said Liberal South Barwon MP Andrew Katos. Premier Daniel Andrews assembled an all-star cast for the major announce-
ment of Jetstar’s continued tenancy at Avalon with a 10-year $12 million injection including taxpayer funds. But the assembled media took to the Princes Hwy following the announcement, making a beeline for City Hall to seek comment from Cr Lyons. Mr Andrews also snubbed Cr Lyons last year as opposition leader when making a $100 million election promise at Simonds Stadium.
“It shows you how partisan and petty the Labor party can be,” Mr Katos said. “Whether it’s a Liberal or Labor mayor, irrespective of what state or federal government is in power you’ve still got to have respect for the mayor. “I don’t understand why Daniel Andrews is operating like this. “Irrespective of the mayor’s colour, race, sexual orientation or political ori-
entation, he should be invited when there are significant announcements. “He’s Geelong’s directly elected mayor, so when you snub the mayor you snub Geelong. “We’re not talking a small opening or launch here. This is something the mayor has been advocating for some time, fighting to keep Avalon operating.” Mr Katos said previous Liberal state
governments had invited Labor mayors to announcements in Geelong and on the Surf Coast, including Rose Hodge, Peter McMullin and Michael Crutchfield. He said protocol would normally dictate the local mayor be invited, especially in Cr Lyons’ role as chair of local councils alliance body G21. The alliance’s chief, Elaine Carbines, a former state Labor MP, was invited. Continued page 4.

IT WAS like a blast from the past when magistrate Tim Bourke told a Geelong drug dealer he was a parasite on society who should spend his prison time thinking of all the brains he had caused to rot. Decades earlier Mr Bourke’s father, Owen, had bellowed at criminals in the same no-nonsense way, leaving them in no doubt how he felt about their criminal activities. Owen Bourke’s booming voice would regularly warn offenders: “If I see you again it’s London to a brick you’ll be going to jail”. Looks like Tim Bourke is a chip off the same brick. AS IF the poor old Gordon TAFE hasn’t had enough kicks. The college was recently among a number of educational organisations and businesses that IT giant Microsoft mistakenly labelled “phishing threats”. People using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer to access Gordon’s website were greeted with a dire warning that the site could maliciously ferret out their sensitive information, like usernames, passwords and credit card details.
The mistake lasted five hours before Microsoft heard the cries of the legitimate sites. The Gordon might be hard up but Double Take just can’t see it stooping to phishing for additional funds. FOR a media guy, he was pretty media shy. Former Cats skipper Cameron Ling was spotted skulking about the bowels of the Cattery this week trying to avoid the media contingent in attendance for coach Chris Scott’s weekly press conference. As the journos, photographers and cameramen filed out to take in training, Lingy ducked into a back room, asking Indy snapper Reg Ryan how long the media invasion would last. “A week,” replied Reg, proving no help at all to the reclusive Ling. Perhaps he’s still in hiding. AN ALLEGED flasher haunting Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre might be in for a little more trouble than just a court date. After the Indy’s Facebook page posted an image of a bloke wanted for questioning over the incident, followers were quick with comments and tips to help the police investigation. But one eagle-eyed Facebooker added an extra dimension to the observations. “Nice wedding ring,” posted Carrie Bee. Best he turns himself in to police before his wife sees the post.

By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG’S construction sector “is going gangbusters” in the face of a tightening economy, with almost $1 billion in projects presently under way and another $2 billion in the wings. With major building projects completed in the past year totalling $650 million, Mayor Darryn Lyons said cranes across the city’s skyline underscored a burgeoning economy attracting investment and a reputation for technology and human capital. Key projects driving Geelong’s building industry include: stage one Epworth Geelong Hospital, due for completion mid-2016, $277m;

We’re rapidly gaining a reputation for excellence in technological capacity and human capital. “Key growth sectors are emerging, including health care and social services, education and research, advanced manufacturing, tourism, finance, insurance and professional services, ICT and agribusiness.” Cr Lyons said a recent survey of business confidence found that more than 70 per cent of businesses in the Geelong region expect increased profitability over the next 12 months. MOOVE over mauve - Geelong kids are milking their art skills and giving a set of 10 life-size, fibreglass dairy cows a bovine makeover. Dairy Australia has herded the blank cow canvasses into local schools as part of it 12-week Picasso Cows program. Dairy Australia project manager, Emily Barnes said the program aimed to help kids find the nutritional benefits of foods like milk, cheese and yoghurt as part of a balanced diet. Ms Barnes said most of the schools in the 2015 Picasso Cows program were located in metropolitan areas where many students had limited knowledge of farming life. “It is surprising the number of kids who have no idea how milk gets from the cow to the supermarket or think that yogurt actually grows on trees,” she said. “This program is designed to help schools explore the entire grass-to-glass process and keep the learning fun and creative. “The program also serves up key nutrition messages for primary school students at an age when healthy lifestyle habits can be established. “It’s an important lesson given that two in three children between the ages of nine and 16 are not meeting the Australian Dietary Guidelines’ recommendation for the dairy food group and are missing out on the essential nutrients, including calcium, that naturally occur in dairy.”
A FATHER and son have died in a collision with a tree at Sutherlands Creek, west of Geelong. Police said the Lethbridge pair, aged 40 and 18, were travelling toward Geelong when their vehicle left Steiglitz Rd on Sunday morning.

Mayor left out of the Labor picture
From page 1 “This is just pettiness and also vindictive,” Mr Katos said. “But it doesn’t surprise me.” The Independent has heard speculation about Cr Lyons planning to stand for federal politics against the ALP’s Corio incumbent, Richard Marles, adding to the political divide.
Ƭ
“It was disappointing. I don’t know why I wasn’t invited,” he said at the time. “I’ve championed those projects. I’m all about getting the most funding I can for Geelong. “As far as I am concerned, politics doesn’t come into it.” State Government did not respond for comment before the Independent went to press.
The Independent also understands that Linfox, operator of Avalon Airport, was set to invite Cr Lyons but the Andrews Government withdrew the invitation. Cr Lyons, a Liberal party member, declined to comment on the latest snub. But last year he said the Simonds Stadium snub had left him perplexed.
Toll-road plan ‘to ease traffic’ been a priority. “If the project proceeds it will be the much-needed second river crossing, which Victoria’s second largest city has been advocating for some time. It has the potential to be great for Geelong and will assist with easing congestion for the longer term.” Ms Casson said Geelong must be consulted on the project to ensure it met the region’s road transport needs. But shadow treasurer Michael O’Brien said the project had no business case or mandate. “Why would motorists pay a toll to take Daniel Andrews’ Western Distributor toll road when they can take the West Gate Bridge for free?” he said. “The one project Daniel Andrews did take to the election was the West Gate Distributor. Now he has scrapped it for an alternative at 10 times the cost.” Mr O’Brien said the project appeared to be building another freeway ending in a T-intersection, causing further inner city congestion.

Mr Andrews recently laid to rest the previous government’s East West Link, leaving a second river crossing in limbo. “Building a direct link to the Port of Melbourne and a tunnel alternative to the West Gate Bridge would cut travel times for workers and businesses across Victoria,” he said. A SURPRISE second Melbourne river crossing project could ease congestion for Geelong commuters. Premier Daniel Andrews yesterday unveiled Transurban’s proposed Western Distributor - as opposed to the Westgate Distributor - an “innovative new“ toll road project. The Transurban proposal would connect the West Gate Fwy to CityLink via a tunnel, a second river crossing and an elevated freeway along Footscray Rd. Mr Andrews said the project would relieve pressure on the West Gate Bridge, improve truck access to Melbourne’s port and significantly reduce truck traffic. Transurban estimated the project would generate 3500 construction jobs and cost up to $5.5 billion. Mr Andrews said the project would start at the end of the year and be complete by 2020 if it secured approval. The Government would assess the proposal against other plans

Fake $100s shock market staff By NOEL MURPHY FAKE $100 notes are circulating in Geelong as the latest counterfeit banknotes to hit the town. Police are investigating two incidents over the Anzac weekend at Geelong Vintage Market where two forged notes were passed but unidentified until later. The notes were passed late in the af-
ternoon as staff were about to close business for the day. “It was the end of the day, they were buying a few things and obviously they were missed and went through, owner John Lah told the Independent. “We noticed them when we were tilling. They’re shinier, they don’t have a watermark - if you hold them up it’s obvious it’s not there.
“One note was not as shiny as the other, you had to have a good look at it, and in the evening light it would be hard to spot the difference. Mr Lah warned other businesses to be wary of the dud $100s and customers trying to pass them when activity was brisk. “It was just that time of night, a few people handling transactions and trying to finish up. Most people could be dis-
tracted, he said. “We told everyone around our area and all our supervisors are checking notes. Geelong Police confirmed they were investigating the counterfeit notes but would not comment further. The latest counterfeit scam follows a flood of fake $50 notes in shops across
Geelong eight months ago. Notes were passed at Market Square Shopping Centre and as far afield as Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre. Police said young sales assistants were often targeted at busy times when their attention might be distracted. They warned of shoppers creating small disturbances to draw attention.
Jack raises the roof with 650 steins from around the world Jetstar ‘lifts By NOEL MURPHY pipe plans’ “THE man who fears to drink has no true soul. Wisdom can be gleaned from beer stein aphorisms for sure but get caught in the middle of Jack Leen’s 650-strong collection of steins and the threat of genius looms large. And that’s not counting the steins Jack's secreted away at home. Tradies and handymen will be familiar with Jack’s collection, hanging from ceiling hooks in the office of Leens Building Supplies at North Geelong. It includes just about every species of hand-held beer receptacle imaginable - in glass, ceramic, pewter, silver, wood. They’re emblazoned with brew and brewery names, hunters, stags, castles, dogs, maps, heraldry, risque figurines, forests, cottages and more. “A few of them came from European and German friends who loved the amber fluid. They played it pretty hard and it’s a sort of tradition, said Jack, who’s been amassing the collection over the past 30 years. “They’d bring in their vessels from time to time and we got some from demolitions in our early (business) days and others from customers. “It got a kind of momentum and there’s a mixture of novelty and genuine stuff here. There’s 650- plus, I smuggle the odd one home. “The Leens are all collectors. In years

Besides, as he suggests, such a mission could spell disaster. “I’m a bit of a one-pot screamer, he laughed.
THE COMMITMENT of Jetstar to Avalon for the next 10 years with a $12 million funding injection could revive plans for an avgas pipeline to the airport. VIVA Energy chief Scott Wyatt said the proposal could be “reinvigorated with the security of Avalon now assured for 10 years. Former premier Ted Baillieu made the avgas election promise in 2010 as part of an Avalon rail link concept. Mr Wyatt said Viva considered the pipe during the sale process when taking over from Shell. “We have a number of pipelines that run between Geelong and Melbourne, Mr Wyatt said. “We looked at taking a spur line off one of our product lines to Avalon. It didn’t get off the ground in time the last time but with the good news of Jetstar continuing I expect and hope that it will get reinvigorated. “It sounds easy and there is not a long distance but it costs a lot of money so hopefully we can build this pipeline in the future. “There will need to be some discussion about who pays for it.

FURNITURE SUPERSTORE $6.8m investments ‘around Bend’ INTERNATIONAL awards and millions of dollars in plant investments are just some of the good oil on a growing Lara business. Boundary Bend Olives this week launched a new $4.2 million packaging line on the back of a “massive medal haul at New York International Olive Oil Competition. General manager Nick Stahl said the packaging line put Boundary Bend “well and truly ahead of any competitor in Australia and on par with the best Europe can produce. The company was now working on a $1.6 million investment in oil storage tanks, Mr Stahl said. Monday’s launch coincided with the release of the company’s Cobram Estate 2015 First Harvest extra virgin olive oil. MOVES to welcome campervans and RVs to Winchelsea could mark a new tourism sector for the Surf Coast. Tourism chiefs have long rejected grey nomads and other socalled free campers but the Growing Winchelsea lobby argues RV owners spend an average $386 a week that local businesses should be able to harness. A petition tabled with Surf Coast Shire council this week called for Winchelsea to be formally declared an “RV Friendly Town. “We have every amenity in place for this status and look forward to welcoming our first RV overnighters to the banks of the beautiful Barwon River, said

Growing Winchelsea president Stuart Fountain. The group said RV owners had consistently made a “moderate but important contribution to the town’s economy until Surf Coast mounted a camping bylaws crackdown on RV visitors. Tourism bosses such as Tourism Greater Geelong and Bellarine boss Roger Grant have consistently argued campervans have exploited beaches and bush tracks to the detriment of the local accommodation industry. Growing Winchelsea told Surf Coast the economic benefits of becoming an RV Friendly Town were significant. “Camping is the fastest growing segment of the Australian domestic tourism market, valued at over $5.4 billion, and over the

Newtown’s tight grasp on rich list
Gallipoli tour emotional experience for Sarah By NOEL MURPHY
Little River, Torquay and Jan Juc, Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale, and Geelong West. Other lower-income suburbs included Portarlington, Indented Head and St Leonards, Anglesea, and East Geelong and Newcomb. Overall, Geelong, Queenscliff and Surf Coast had 136,250 taxpayers generating income of $6.7 billion and returning a median income of $49,480. The latest edition of the Australian Tax Office (ATO) statistics for the 2012/2013 financial year showed Victoria’s leading postcode as the town of St Andrews, in Melbourne’s north-east, with average income of $148,967. ATO second commissioner Andrew Mills said the state’s highest earners were surgeons, with an average taxable income of $358,263.
Fort ideas ‘unachievable’ “However, it is important to make very clear that Fort Queenscliff is an operational military base,” the Member for Corangamite said. Some proposals could be implemented because they would have a “minor impact” but others were “simply not achievable”, she said. The plan also proposed “sophisticated food and beverage experiences” as well as “a range of public and private events” in the fort precinct.

A PLAN to turn Fort Queenscliff into a tourist drawcard with shops and accommodation includes “a number” of unachievable proposals, according to federal MP Sarah Henderson. Borough of Queenscliff released its draft plan for the historic military facility this week, hoping to “reposition” the fort for economic benefit. Ms Henderson said the plan included “some interesting proposals”.
SARAH Kenworthy had it down in spades when she described the Anzac ethos as one of courage, mateship and values that remain relevant today. The snapshot of that Aussie esprit de corps earned her a trip to Gallipoli with a State government-sponsored Victoria Remembers tour. Sarah, in year 12 at Sacred Heart College, was one of 90 students selected from across the state. Two of her great, great uncles served in World War I, one of them, Michael Cronin, fatally. Sarah said the experience was both moving and educational. She visited Australian, British and Turkish memorials, rubbed shoulders with Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Prince Harry and shed tears at the 100th anniversary Gallipoli commemoration. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Sarah said. “And it was really emotional - all these people who showed so much courage, who fought and died. And many of them were only as young as I am. “The dawn service was a moving and solemn experience and the walk through the dark to stand with thousands of others felt like a fitting tribute to the men whose lives were forever changed by Gallipoli.” Sarah visited Istanbul before travelling to the Gallipoli Peninsula. “At the Turkish monument we happened on a performance by the imperial band, which historically provided music to stir the bravery of soldiers, and met locals military and police who were as keen to have photos with us as we were with them. “At Cape Hellas we got a special unexpected briefing from a royal marine and from the curator of the Imperial War Memorials. Our last stop was the Redoubt Cemetery, a poignant reminder of the loss of so many young lives, in what is now a very beautiful and tranquil place.”

New exercise program makes move to improve health of aged and ill By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AGE OR ill health are no longer excuses to get out of exercise, as far as YMCA fitness instructor Tegan Purser is concerned. Ms Purser is running Heartmoves, a new Heart Foundation program for people who have health-risk factors, who are overweight or have a stable chronic illness. People with high cholesterol or blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis and diabetes could still enjoy the benefits of physical activity in a safe, fun and social environment, she said. “You don’t have to get fit first to survive this exercise program. Heartmoves shows how easy it is to start moving,” Ms Purser said. The specially designed exercise program could be tailored to

GRAINCORP has won relaxed rules governing its Geelong terminal from Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) as it faces increased competition. The Independent reported in December that GrainCorp had claimed it faced “strong competition” from a proposed Bunge grain terminal at Corio Quay, which would not be subject to the same regulations. A residents group has also slammed the Bunge Australia 450,000-tonnes-a year bulk grain export terminal on land leased from Midway. The regulations were aimed at ensuring exporters had fair and transparent access to terminal facilities. ACCC chairman Rod Sims said sufficient competition already existed between Emerald Grain’s Melbourne port terminal and GrainCorp’s Geelong port terminal. Both terminals competed for grain from similar catchment areas in Victoria and southern New South Wales, he said. “The degree of spare export capacity at these terminals and the significant container grain exports from the Port of Melbourne place further competitive pressures on these two terminals. “The ACCC has therefore made a draft determination that the full application of the code is no longer required at Emerald’s MPT and GrainCorp’s Geelong terminal." Emerald and GrainCorp both submitted that their Victorian terminals competed against each other and faced competitive constraints from the domestic market, container exports and new port developments in Victoria. The exemptions relax a number of provisions including a non-discrimination requirement, dispute resolution processes, ACCC approval of capacity allocation systems and some reporting requirements.

BUCKETS to all the smokers at Moorabool St’s bus stops. I am an elderly pensioner but can’t even sit down at the bus stops any more because I am forced to keep dodging all the disgusting smoke. Why put up signs if penalties don’t apply. Joan, Grovedale
BUCKETS to Geelong Cats fans. Shame, shame, shame. I was extremely disappointed by their lack of respect for umpires at the Kangaroos game. The consistent booing and foul language was appalling, especially on the Anzac weekend, which represents brotherhood and a united front. Disappointed Citizen, Bell Post Hill
BOUQUETS to the lovely Claire and Emily at Decjuba Newtown for exceptional customer service when they obtained an item and honoured a terrific discount for me. I will certainly be warm this winter. Amanda, Highton
BUCKETS to an insurer that leaves a lot to be desired. No process, no fairness, no discussion, no customer service, no empathy, no reimbursements, no responsibility, only a lot of false advertising. All drivers should avoid colliding with anyone the company insures or be left out of pocket. Imagine If I Was Liable, Corio
BUCKETS to a caravan dealer for yelling and screaming at us to never come back when told the after-sales service was terrible. It was not nice, especially since we had bought two new caravans from the dealership in the past 15 years. The dealer forgot we talk to many caravaners. Never Again, Drysdale BUCKETS to the person or persons who left dog poo on my nature strip four times. Anyone unprepared to pick up after their dog should not have one. BUCKETS to Former Agent (Buckets & Bouquets, 24 April). If you thought some of your vendors wanted too much for their homes, you should have declined their business. But that would have been the honourable thing to do. Former Vendor, Newtown BOUQUETS to Jude and the Barwon Heads Hall committee for the twilight market initiative on Anzac Day eve. A great venue with fantastic food, wine and local crafts with music for all. Do it again, folks. Maralyn, Barwon Heads
BUCKETS to the low-lives who stole large bunches of flowers and cards, including mine, placed at a war memorial for Anzac Day. Many bunches were placed on Saturday but missing on Sunday. The lack of respect for our diggers and their families was very disappointing. Lest We Forget, St Albans Park
BOUQUETS to plumber Neil Biffin. I phoned him after hours and he arrived promptly on time the next day. He efficiently attended to a bad blockage. I thank Neil for his clean, knowledgeable work and recommend his services. Elderly Lady, Belmont
BOUQUETS to a pipe band that attended a Barwon Heads Anzac Day service. Many, many wreaths were laid at the monument while the piper played. It was a truly splendid effort on his part to play for so long. Christine, Barwon Heads

Jabbing back on vaccines
Negative by nature
I AM ALWAYS chuffed when I get a reaction to my letters in the Independent and was similarly thrilled when Heather D’Cruz and Tim Saclier stuck the boot in last week. Ms D’Cruz seems to be an academic and researcher and published author of Social Work Research in Practice: Ethical And Political Contexts yet, with all her seemingly estimable research skills, is unable to unearth the fact that the UK Government has established a 90-million-pound fund to compensate over 800 children brain-damaged by swine flu vaccine. Similarly, she is unable to find references to 13 deaths in Italy from the FLUAD vaccine. Admittedly, the Italian Government has said the connection is not yet proven while simultaneously banning two batches of the product. Also, the Indian Government is considering charges against The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for damage inflicted through a Gardasil vaccination program. Thousands of tribal children were used to test vaccines, with many “falling ill and five deaths”. A website has been set up to combat the California Government’s attempted forced vaccination law SB 277, which seeks to make vaccinations mandatory. The website’s opinion reflects my own, stating: “If there is a risk, there must be a choice”. Given there obviously is a risk, I cannot see how anyone could argue the contrary or the government bully people into vaccinating. Links to all the information quoted have been sent to the Independent to be forwarded to my adversaries. I keenly await hearing from them. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West
THERE are only two ways to reduce the major factor in the cost of living for ordinary households and their biggest expense, the cost of housing. One is to increase supply by increasing urban densities where infrastructure is already in place. The other is to decrease the demand of speculators with one, two or three houses. The first remedy is in the hands of council, which has shown it is signally inept to produce. The second method is easy to implement: scrap the concessions for negative gearing and introduce deductibility for owner-occupied housing. There are precedents for this. Interest deductibility was available for first-home owners when the Hawke Government was in office in the ‘80s. Of course, Bob Hawke also scrapped negative gearing for five minutes then backed down because of a lack of will. It’s abundantly clear negative gearing does nothing for supply. All it does is push up the price of existing housing stock. No other country in the OECD gives such concessions to pure idle speculation. In fact, most countries have much higher levels of public housing, particularly in major cities like Geelong. If we scrapped the concessions for people owning more than one house there would be bucket loads of money for public housing of appropriate densities in areas where people want to live. It would be a win for the Government, a win for the putative home owner and a win for the taxpayer. The only losers would be lazy speculators. Kevin V Russell Geelong
Right-angle wrong JUST who is responsible for the thoughtless rightangle parking areas outside Woolworths at Portarlington? I have seen so many bumps, scrapes and collisions as patrons reverse that it makes a joke of those who planned for the parking of customers’ cars. It’s keeping panel beaters in business. Maybe our ward councillor, Lindsay Ellis, could fix the problem, perhaps by making the area angle parking – please, because it is dangerous. Bob Dare Portarlington

Fun on the fringe I WOULD like to reassure Heather D’Cruz (Letters, 3 April) that one needs a high level of intelligence plus a fertile imagination to live on the fringes of reality. It certainly helped me through my tertiary education. Also, a bit of Irish ancestry probably contributes to the fun of my facetious fringe-dwelling. I believe Tim Saclier (Letters, 10 April) would agree. Thanks for your support and empathy, Tim. Melva Stott Anglesea

Jacka VCs backed I READ with interest the Independent’s report last week on Albert Jacka and offer Torquay RSL sub-branch’s moral support to his family in their quest to have his service recognised with two more Victoria Albert Jacka Crosses. Our club has a banner of a soldier in silhouette, who we have affectionately named Albert in honour of Albert Jacka. Ian Gilbank Torquay RSL sub-branch president ALBERT Jacka richly deserved two extra VCs but the British High Command would not have approved those awards - cannot have colonials thinking they are better. Albert Jacka’s life was shortened by the war. Judith Fisher South Geelong
Living in la, la, la land IT WAS interesting to see no less than four true believes in ‘anthropogenic global warming/climate change all writing in to condemn Alan Barron for his daring to suggest that modern environmentalism is “anti-people” and that the money, time, and effort could be better employed otherwise (Letters, 24 April). It is notable that of the four, I took the trouble to send three each a CD containing a huge interactive slide show covering every aspect of the subject, with over 1000 hyperlinks and that those three neither acknowledged receipt nor replied nor commented. The fourth Independent correspondent engaged in lengthy email exchanges in which he did provide some information, somewhat selectively and much of it out of date, whereas he was provided with up-to-date links to cover the points he raised. With only one exception, and that was only when it was pointed out to him, he did not check any of the links provided. This indicates quite clearly a common pattern I have previously experienced: that those promoting climate alarmism tend neither to look nor listen to

anything that calls into question their belief systems. Good news is not popular, it seems. Children putting their hands over their ears and singing “La, la, la” comes to mind. Michael Spencer Burwood

Admiration, condemnation YOU have to admire Alan Barron’s tenacity (Letters, 17 April). Here’s a man who time and time again has been found wanting when it comes to the accuracy of his statements but it seems to have little or no impact on his position. I’ve read Henry’s Law, written in 1803, and have to say Mr Barron was really clutching at straws even questioning the physics regarding rising ocean temperatures. Anyone who has some basic knowledge will understand how ridiculous his statements are. Gary Shepherd Belmont
Watts up with writer I WAS rather hoping Peter Rees might have responded to my letter of 20 March, in which I pointed out that NASA climatologists have measured that .58 watts per square metre more of sunlight is absorbed by the planet than is radiated away due to increased atmospheric CO2. This is equal to the energy of 65,000 Loy Yangs now locked in for possibly thousands of years. I thought this would be the ultimate refutation that planetary warming ceased in 1998 and that it would at least elicit some form of reply. But recent letters show Mr Rees has been able to disregard it. To show the scale of this imbalance, one can calculate that if this energy was all concentrated over Australia it would raise the temperature of the top 1km of our soils by about .9C a year. Would Mr Rees perhaps reconsider his position or maybe even point out why the NASA measurement does not undermine his case? If NASA can put men on the moon maybe this measurement is accurate, so we would be very foolish to ignore it. The other question I have previously put to sceptics in this paper but without receiving a reply is why the collateral damage of ocean acidification is not in itself sufficient to have us urgently move away from fossil fuels regardless of climate change. Geelong Gas Appliances can detect carbon monoxide threats.
BEWARE CARBON MONOXIDE – It is a silent killer warning to homeowners and landlords who have gas heating regarding the dangers of carbon monoxide. It is a colorless, odorless poisonous gas, which can be given off by your heater without you even knowing it.
A
There have been a number of deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning in Victoria in the past few years. Energy Safe Victoria is aware of the countless near misses where people have nearly died from carbon monoxide poisoning. It is mainly faulty or un-serviced gas heaters which can cause carbon monoxide to be produced, however if there are too many exhaust fans being used in the house, this can create a negative pressure down the heater flue which can also produce carbon monoxide when the heater is in use.

THE BOLD palette of leading local artist John Druce has gone on show with about 60 recent works. Nominally retired, the 76 year-old Bellarine Peninsula artist has travelled widely for the last 10 years exploring places and characters. Druce said his major themes still revolved around the exploitation and degradation of Australia’s indigenous population and the characters of out-of-the-way Australia. “Within our vast island canvas lays a myriad of lives and landscapes. We have a 60,000 yearold indigenous population and

settlements born of convict labour and stealth,” Druce explained. “It is the layers of history, deception and drama that were not taught to my generation.” Druce believed that Australians had been “indoctrinated with an imperial view that has plagued us with a 200-year Aussie amnesia”. “I have endeavoured to uncover these misguided teachings though my paintings. “It astounds me how our white authors masked the truth of this nation’s history. I feel I have only scratched the surface to unfold the greater truths and the reason for their conscious concealment. “This is not meant to be the
full story of its unearthing, just my beginning of an unravelling story.” Druce said the chance to travel the land and experience its impact on people who grew up and worked in the out-back and distant coastal areas was a “rare treat indeed”. “People have always interested me. The character in their faces has always held my attention. “Faces of the outback people are so full of character, hence my need to photograph, draw and paint them continually.” Gordon Gallery is hosting The John Druce Exhibition from 10am to 4pm weekdays until Thursday.

RICK Price has had his own (tambourine) mountains to climb but he has taken on an equally vertically challenging task in a salute to country immortal John Denver. “There’s not many who don’t know a Denver song,” Price observed on the line from Nashville where he has been based for some years. Price’s narrative concert tells the John Denver story while paying tribute to his music, covering 20 of Denver’s memorable songs. Price is backed by the Colorado Quarter, an “incredible” group of Aussie musos providing much of the soundtrack as the story unfolds through song and story-telling. Denver’s private life belied his public persona as a fresh-faced country boy, with the show revealing how his pristine public image was far removed from his troubled personal life. “It’s a nice break away from my own music. This is completely different but I have to emphasise it’s not an impersonation of John – I’m not putting on a blonde wig and glasses,” Price laughed. “But it is a salute to his music. He wrote so many timeless classics. “When I was a kid he was on radio. He was part of the fabric of my musical world – even my grandmother was a big fan. “When I was learning the material for the show I realised why this guy had been so successful. He had such a prolific period where he wrote a lot of music. “His melodies are very strong, which is why they have stood the test of time, and his lyrics had a powerful message that struck a chord with everyone.” Price also works on his own albums as well as writing and producing for other artists. A number of Australian artists had sought him out in Nashville to help with albums, he said. “If I have a connection with the songs or I have written the songs for that artist, if the artist has great songs and is a great singer, then the rest is just chopping wood, really. “I’m there as a co-writer to help them get their

“They’re such great songs,” he said. “Paul Simon’s probably, I think, one of the premier songwriters, certainly of this era... such great songs, wonderful memories and music to die for.” Shelley and Robertson will bring their Simon and Garfunkel concert to Geelong Performing Arts Centre on 9 May. The music remains timeless, etched in the memories of fans they touched at the time and generations since who have discovered their songs. With record sales of more than 70 million, Simon and Garfunkel’s best-loved songs

THEY were the voice of a generation, musician commentators with a lyrical insight into a world of beauty, contradiction and social ills. The songs of Simon and Garfunkel, folk rock heroes of the ‘60s, have become timeless over the passing decades. It’s hardly surprising tributes such as the Mark Shelley and John Robertson show headed Geelong’s way might continue to strike a powerful chord with the public. “We love Simon and Garfunkel music,” Robertson said simply. He’s the Garfunkel of the duo; lean, white and legitimately curly-haired. “We’ve been in a duo together for 26 years. We’ve got a bunch of guys in the band who love the stuff, we’ve got an audience who thinks they’re back in their teenage years when they’re listening to this magnificent music. “Every time I mention the fact that we’re doing this show, somebody will say, ‘Oh wow, I’d love to come see it’. When we asked the players that we wanted to play with us, they all say, ‘We love that music and we’d love to do it’.” Shelley, who plays Paul Simon, was of like mind.

The spacious venue can cater for large family groups and seats up to 76 patrons. Theo advises booking early to secure seats for Mothers Day. “Pre-book with Le Thai Chef and your group will receive a complementary treat for mum ranging from sweets to a bottle of Le Thai bubbly, depending on group size.” Gluten-free and vegetarian options are available. Le Thai Chef serving lunch from 11.30am to 2pm and dinner from 6pm to 10pm seven days a week at 199 Thompson Rd, North Geelong, phone 5278 9898.
Day weekend is extra special at his restaurant because mums will really be treated like royalty. “The highest level of love and respect is held for mothers in Thai culture, so our customers’ mums will be pampered and served delicious food unlike any other fine restaurant in Geelong.” After eight months in business, the response to Le Thai Chef has been “terrific”, Theo says. Le Thai Chef has even been ranked as high as Best Restaurant in Geelong on Trip Advisor. “It’s quite an achievement to be ranked that high in such a short amount of time,” Theo says. 1182328-LB18-15

LE Thai Chef has Mother’s Day covered with its exotic banquets, given a western twist. Celebrity Chef Sun has put together a variety of banquets ranging from $21.90 to $39.90. Trained in Canada and France, Sun grew up cooking Thai food and has even served his dishes to royalty. Sun incorporates all his knowledge and experience into creating “traditional Thai dishes with western presentation”. Great ideas for mum at Heights Sewing Centre
In 2 Linen’s Nina Fiorillo and Mel Ekinei.
Linen gifts galore PILLOWS, doonas, quilt covers, cushions, sheet sets – In 2 Linen is a veritable treasure trove of Manchester and linen products. Imported and sourced locally as well, the Geelong West warehouse’s stocks are a must-see for interior designers, holiday home and apartment decorators. Aged care centres, hotels, even government departments are among its regular clients.
Like any good operator, In 2 Linen’s reputation has been built on a broad range of quality products and exceptional service. Its 800g zero twist pile Turkish towels are just one example of its exception product range. Gorgeous and in a great range of hues, they won’t lose shape or colour. Better still, they’re available at affordable prices. So too, In 2 Linen’s Aussiemade microfibre pillows, goose
down doonas, cushions galore and cushion covers as well. In 2 Linen has the largest range of super king quilt covers, doonas and sheet sets. Mega queen and king sheet sets are also available for extradeep mattresses. Top modern contemporary styles right through to old world classics - with everything from formal to retro fun styles – are on offer, and the emphasis is always on quality and affordable prices.
For anyone looking for inspiration decorating a new area in the home, for gifts, for a little self-indulgence, the magic trove that is In 2 Linen has something for everyone. In 2 Linen is open seven days a week at 2/72 Weller St, Geelong West, phone 5221 1999. The In 2 Linen Manchester warehouse has plenty of offstreet parking, too.
ANYONE with a mum who loves to sew but unsure what she needs will find the right advice at Heights Sewing Centre. Heights team leader Tracey Zinn always has gift suggestions up her sleeve. “If she loves patchwork and quilting, the AccuQuilt GO! cutter will help her save time cutting out shapes and strips,” Tracey says. For anyone who just wants to make their mum more comfortable, Tracey suggests a Horn Sewing Chair, on sale from $199 to $179. For a new sewing machine, Heights has one for every mum from prices starting at $179. Brands in-store include Berina, Janome, Husqvarna Viking, Handiquilter and Babylock. Anyone buying a new overlocker or sewing machine will receive for their mum a free lesson at Heights to learn how to use the unit to its fullest potential.
The store also stocks a great range of ladies’ handkerchiefs from popular brands Rosdale and Armando Caruso. Tracey suggests a new sewing box or a nice pair of scissors could also make the cut on Mothers Day. Established since 1935, Heights Sewing Centre prides itself on “good old-fashioned customer service”, Tracey says. “We help people in every way we can and if we haven’t got the product in our vast range of haberdashery we will try sourcing it.” Heights also has a large service and repair centre at 5 Candover Street, Geelong West. Industry qualified technicians are available 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday by phoning 5229 5567. Height’s Sewing Centre is at 176 Pakington St, Geelong West, phone 5229 3558, and new premises at 1/63 Synnot St, Werribee, phone 8742 6238.

Top range for mums
THERE’S nothing quite as luxurious as snuggling into a stunning wool and cashmere dressing gown - and mum will love the range at Milana’s Lingerie and Swimwear boutique. The store’s Anita says she has a great range of dressing downs including velour, silk and pure cotton. “If you’re looking for something special for mum that’s totally gorgeous, have a look at our range of silk dressing gowns,” Anita says. The Kaye Jones range of classically-styled elegant sleepwear and dressing gowns is crafted from the finest quality materials. One of Australia’s leading sleepwear and dressing gown stylists, the nightwear collections offer a wide range of prints, colours and styles to suit all women in classic shapes and sizes.
A Milana’s gift voucher is another great gift idea for Mother’s Day.
With Kaye Jones, Milana’s is renowned for its range of MicroModal, along with French label Simone Perele and Ginia silk wear. Australian designers are also wellrepresented, with Australian-made sleepwear from Natalie Begg recently introduced alongside Melbourne designer Yuu. “We have one of the largest ranges of pure silk in Geelong,” Anita says. Nighties, pyjamas and the popular spencers are all in stock along with the wide range of lingerie for which Milana’s is so well known. Milana’s is still the go-to shop for year-round swimwear, all undergarments and mastectomy fittings. “We specialise in personal fitting with four qualified fitters in store,” Anita says. Milana’s is at 125A Pakington St, Geelong West, phone 5229 1228.

AUSTRALIAN Institute of Health and Welfare statistics show Australia faces a major health crisis, with three out of five people either overweight or obese. Both present serious health consequences, such as increased risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. But the real tragedy is that these complications are preventable. The team at The Firm Slimming & Health Clinic has over 20 years’ experience helping people lose weight, tone muscles and reduce the appearance of cellulite for over 20 years. Electrotherapy plays a crucial part in the program, helping firm and tone muscles to reshape the body. The non-invasive treatment
FOOT and Leg Pain Clinics excel in musculoskeletal medicine and tissue regeneration. As one of Australia’s leading musculoskeletal podiatry practices, the clinics utilise latest medical research and natural treatments to help heal injuries and assist degenerative concerns such as arthritis. The treatments can prevent the need for surgery and medication to alleviate mobility concerns and pain from foot and leg issues. Musculoskeletal podiatrist Dr David Kavanagh says the clinics’ regenerative injection therapies, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and proliferation-of-newtissue-injection therapy (prolotherapy), have had “outstanding results” for pain and mobility concerns, arthritis, soft-tissue injuries and degeneration.
Foot and Leg Pain Clinics can help patients without the use of surgery or ongoing medication. “We’ve assisted athletes to return to professional sport, relieved pain in people who’ve suffered for years, promoted healing and increased mobility in people who’ve been told nothing can be done for them and assisted others to avoid surgery,” Dr Kavanagh says. Similar in action, both treatments encourage natural healing
mechanisms and promote the development of new collagen. PRP, utilising components of the patient’s own blood, and prolotherapy, which uses a glucose and anesthetic solution, achieve results including: increased joint, ligament and tendon stability; enhanced muscle and cartilage repair; pain relief; and increased mobility. The treatments are also natural, non-toxic, minimally invasive and relatively fast acting. “Combine these treatments with correct diagnosis, addressing structural issues and faulty biomechanics, and the results can be outstanding and long-term,” Dr Kavanagh says. Dr Kavanagh is available for appointments at Foot and Leg Pain Clinics in Geelong by phoning 1300 328 300.

MonaLisa treatment now here Uniquelaser’s Estelle Hands, Skye Symonds, Sarah Oram and Milly Jacobs.
Special offers for Uniquelaser birthday UNIQUELASER is celebrating its first birthday in May with giveaways, VIP events, special offers and free skin consultations all month. Uniquelaser is an advanced laser hair removal and skin clinic in Westfield Geelong. Sarah Oram opened the clinic last year after identifying a gap in the aesthetic market. “Advanced skin, cosmetic and laser hair removal treatments have traditionally only been accessible to the rich and famous - my mission is to change that without any sacrifice to quality or service,” Sarah says. Uniquelaser’s success is underpinned by its mission to provide the highest quality, most effective hair removal and cosmetic treatments available at affordable prices.
“Geelong has really embraced us for the simple reason that our treatments work and our business has grown primarily via wordof-mouth. It’s now time for us to thank our loyal clients and welcome new clients,” Sarah says. “We’re not just about laser hair removal. Our team of skin and medical experts are passionate about helping clients with affordable solutions to looking and feeling their best.” Experienced cosmetic physician Dr Ed Omarjee has been performing procedures for over nine years at one of Australia’s leading cosmetic surgeries. His Uniquelaser treatments include anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, vein, mole and skin tag removal and help with excessive sweating.
“We love helping people achieve the skin they have always wanted,” Sarah says. “If you have a special event coming up we can get you looking and feeling your best without breaking the bank. We also have a great range of gift vouchers available - perfect for Mother’s Day”. Uniquelaser offers complimentary skin and laser hair removal consultations. Uniquelaser’s exclusive VIP events and offers in May include up to 60 per cent off laser hair removal, free skin consultations and a draw for clients to win back for themselves any gift vouchers purchased. Clients can follow Uniquelaser on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter or phone 5222 1995 for exclusive access to the events and special offers.
THE NEW MonaLisa Touch Laser at Australian Skin Face Body is changing women’s lives. After going through early menopause in her early 40s, Sue put up with vaginal discomfort, dryness and painful intercourse for years until her GP introduced her to Dr Fariba BehniaWillison. Vaginal atrophy, the medical term for vaginal dryness, affects more than four in 10 menopausal and post-menopausal women. The drop in hormone levels during menopause can result in a thinning and loss of elasticity of the vaginal walls, reduced blood supply and natural lubrication. Dr Behnia-Willison has successfully treated more than 2000 patients from her Adelaide-based clinic. “MonaLisa Touch is suitable for women of all ages experiencing symptoms related to vaginal atrophy, including vaginal dryness or itching, urinary urgency and incontinence, burning sensations and irritations of the vagina, fissuring of the vagina opening, vaginal laxity, pain during intercourse,” says Dr Behnia-Willison. The MonaLisa Touch therapy uses non-surgical, minimally invasive CO2
Dr Fariba Behnia-Willison laser treatment to renew the cells in the vaginal wall. Up to three treatments are typically required, four to six weeks apart. Most patients see improvements after the first session. “The process is quick - it’s a walkin and walk-out procedure and for most patients it’s painless,” says Dr Behnia-Willison. Australian Skin Face Body will host a MonaLisa Touch information session from 10am to midday on 23 May at 50 Western Beach Rd. Ample car parking is available. Reservations are available by phoning 5221 8444 or emailing desi@ asfb.com.au.

Better bodies BODY Conquest has been changing physiques and achieving marvellous results with its clients for many years. Body Conquest’s Ingrid Barclay says the major difference is that Team BC addresses the missing link to success. “Yes, we look at resistance training, we address cardio requirements and we can overhaul clients nutrition to get them eating for fat loss, improved health and far greater energy levels,” she says. “But we also address emotional eating behaviours such as
bingeing, cheating, not sticking to plan so you do achieve the body you want. “Simple strategies and practical action strategies apply in daily life. To change your body you must reprogram your thinking and change your belief systems about food and exercise. “If you want results you must be prepared to accept responsibility and adopt our past successful clients’ creed: you can either make excuses or get results but you can’t do both. “Whether you want a bikini body, strength gains, improve
your sports performance on the oval or court, Team BC will help you overcome past self-limiting beliefs and install some new success beliefs. “We provide support and understanding of all things food and supplement wise, will get you on a training program you love, can see results and can teach you the five steps of ending emotional eating. Team BC can be your body fat solution, too.” Prospective clients can contact Ingrid today for free initial consultations and take advantage of Body Conquest’s 10 per cent discount for May.

2.0 LTR TURBO DIESEL / 6 SPEED AUTO / CLIMATE CONTROL / ABS CRUISE / ALLOYS / LEATHER TRIM / HEATED SEATS / EXCELLENT SERVICE HISTORY / UVG 136 $17,750 DRIVEAWAY PRIMED TO SHOW: The new Polo GTI is a deserved running mate for the award-winning Golf GTI hot-hatch.
A winning team By DEREK OGDEN THE good sports of Volkswagen – the Golf and Polo – once again have made up a potential winning team with the new Polo GTI hanging on the tail of the Golf GTI, winner of the 2015 North American car of the year award. Now Golf’s smaller brother, the Polo GTI, is primed to show what it can do with its recent launch down-under. Volkswagen Group Australia (VGA) took the compact hothatch to the top of the mountain – the Blue Mountains, to be precise – to let the media try it out. The latest Polo GTI is powered by a new 1.8-litre TSI fourcylinder turbo-petrol engine, a smaller brother of the 2.0-litre version in the Golf GTI, mated with either a six-speed manual gearbox or seven-speed DSG automatic transmission. The GTI Polo’s powerplant puts out peak power of 141 kW, 9kW up on its predecessor, be-
tween 4300 and 6200 rpm (manual) and from 5400 to 6200 revs with the DSG double clutch auto. Torque likewise shows variations: the DSG delivers maximum torque of 250 Nm between 1250 and 5300 rpm, the manual gearbox ups that to 320Nm between 1450 and 4200rpm with no change in performance at 6.7 seconds for the sprint to 100 km/h. Both comply with Euro 5 exhaust emission standards, with official fuel consumption at 5.7 litres/100km and 132g/km carbon dioxide emissions with the DSG, and 6.1 litres, 142g/km, with the manual variant. The 70 fewer Newton metres on tap with the DSG amounted to little shortfall in performance with the DSG able to scuttle past slower traffic in mountain climbs on the launch drive. One incline did give cause for concern when, stopped at traffic lights, the Polo rolled backward on releasing the foot brake before the DSG engaged.
As befitting its sporting character, the latest Polo GTI rides on a chassis that is 10 mm lower at the front and 15 mm lower at the rear compared with the run-ofthe-mill Polo models, allowing engineers to reduce body roll to a minimum, and improve the hot little hatches’ car’s agility. Styling differences include a freshly designed front bumper, featuring foglights with static cornering function mounted in the lower area. In true Volkswagen GTI form a red grille line extends into the headlight housing. The car rolls on 17-inch Parabolica alloy wheels highlighted by the red calipers on the faderesistant brakes. BMW scores six for crossover By EWAN KENNEDY BMW X6 is a fascinating cross between the BMW X5 station wagon and a fivedoor coupe. Performance is excellent if you buy one of the topline models like the BMW X6 50i in which we have just enjoyed a exciting week. Though the all-new X6 is bigger in most dimensions than the original model it’s lighter, only by about 10kg, but this mass reduction shows clever engineering. Big and bold on the outside, BMW X6 is slightly compromised inside, a least in the rear seat. But, that’s hardly a complaint because spacious rear seats in coupes are about as rare as politicians who understand the need for sensible speed limits. In its first iteration BMW X6’s styling polarised opinions, that all changed with the introduction of the all-new second generation at the start of 2015. The lines the new X6’s rear end have been softened and now carry an almost fastback shape reminiscent of the exciting 1970’s automotive era. BMW X6’s front is big and bold and shouts out that this is a sporty BMW that’s not ashamed of being noticed. The air extractors behind the front wheel arches aren’t there at the whim of a stylist, they are part of the aerodynamic set-up and extract air quickly to aid air penetration. The interior is excellent, with a wide dashboard area featuring multiple detailed inserts and swooping curves. Sitting in pride of place are the very BMW big-dial instruments. The TwinPower V8 turbo-petrol in the X6 xDrive50i fitted to our test car generates 330 kW of power and 650 Nm of torque.
LOOK AT ME: Fastback rear end of the all-new BMW X6 works well visually. It jumps from rest to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds, an amazingly low figure for a very large SUV / coupe. Drive is to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The central infotainment screen is very wide, but rather shallow to our eyes. Those who are into tablet screens like it, though, so who are we
revheads to disagree. Access is provided through Bluetooth, USB and Aux. The internet can be accessed but only when the vehicle is stationary. Satellite navigation Professional is standard. The topline models, the 50i we tested and the 50d turbo-diesel, have 16-speaker 600 Watt entertainment that
includes a six-disc CD changer. A full suite of passive and active safety devices ensures the BMW X6 has a five-star safety rating. It even has downhill descent control should you want to tackle fairly serious off-road driving at some stage. The front seats are big, spacious and comfortable but the back seats are tight

on leg and headroom for adults. This is a coupe so you don’t get limo dimensions back there. For a vehicle of this size the space is disappointing. The big V8 petrol has the sort of grunt keen drivers just love. There’s minimal lag and the surge of acceleration makes for quick, safe overtaking – not to forget a smile on any keen drivers face. This engine climbs hills as though they don’t exist. Yet fuel consumption is routinely below 10 litres per 100 kilometres in normal driving, and only gets into the mid teens when you do thrash it along. On the motorway there’s little trouble in getting consumption of under eight litres per 100. Cornering is fast and precise, but you’re at the wheel of a two-plus tonne SUV with a relatively high centre of gravity so it certainly can never be described as nimble. Ride comfort is good, even in the high-performance variants of the X6 and this big coupe has low wind noise levels and tyre noise that isn’t greatly increased by rough Australian back roads. This big BMW coupe is a superb long distance cruiser for two people planning extended trips anywhere in this huge land downunder. Trips that can even include some light duty off-road running to take advantage of the all-wheel-drive system.

Owner of South Geelong’s Bodyshop Paint Supplies, Adam offers a one-stop shop with everything that anyone looking to restore or upgrade a car might need. Or a boat, or industrial machinery as well – he’s got everything covered. Bodyshop Paint Supplies is an auto paint retailer, dealing with all aspects of the panel trade as well as industrial coatings for machinery or boats. “We’ve got all the stuff they’ll need, everything from start to finish – and all the right stuff so they’re not led down the wrong track,” Adam says. “We want to make sure they get everything right the first time, so it’s more affordable and we’ll do great deals, too.” Bodyshop Paint Supplies carries brands including Debeer, Valspar automotive and industrial mix, House Of Kolor, HB Body, Smirdex abrasives, Durablock, Apac tools, Iwata sprayguns and airbrush equipment and Menzerna polishing compounds. A complete range of specialised tools for the industry is also available. Bodyshop Paint Supplies offers free colour-matching and, for trade customers, a free delivery service. The staff are all fully qualified tradesmen and more than happy to point customers in the right direction to achieve the best results possible. “If you’re after a custom job we carry the complete range of House Of Kolor custom paints, so why not come in and discuss your next project with us,”Adam says. Bodyshop Paint Supplies is at 5/131 Fyans St, South Geelong, phone 5229 1928.

IndySport Scott concedes ‘issues’ bite
On the Chris Pitman
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
Bay gives refuge
SHOCK AND YAWN: Josh Walker and Hamish McIntosh at training this week. 138271 stick together when things aren’t going quite perfectly. “That’s our challenge.” Geelong’s older players could be following in Steve Johnson’s footsteps as the substitute in more Geelong games this season. Scott said using older players as the sub would be part of decisionmaking for the team’s future.
“We need to put some thought into what our priorities are for the game and for the future as well. “We’ll give consideration to more experienced players being the sub as opposed to (younger).” Scott said Johnson’s response to being handed the vest was positive given the way he approached the job and had a big influence on the game and his teammates.
Picture: REG RYAN Defender Tom Lonergan will be in the Cat’s squad to meet Richmond, also coming off a disappointing loss, at the MCG on Saturday. Injured pair Andrew Mackie and Mathew Stokes would miss again but the return of Josh Cowan from injury and his good VFL performances offered increased optimism around the Cattery, Scott said.
Warriors’ first chance to show resolve from last place By JOSIP ZILIC LAST plays first in National Premier League when North Geelong hosts high-flying Heidelberg at Elcho Park on Saturday. Heidelberg has been piling on goals while keeping opponents at bay this season with a lean defensive record, including a 1-0 win against Melbourne Knights last up. In contrast, North Geelong has failed to score a goal in open play over the past four rounds even though the Warriors were on scoresheets frequently in previous weeks despite losing. Last week’s encounter against Oakleigh did little for their confidence, either, with the Warriors going down 2-0 at home. Improvements looked to be coming during the game but two moments of clinical finishing undid any good work. Oakleigh started the match with more intent, combining passes and looking settled earlier. North Geelong clicked after 10 minutes when gutsy
CROSS: Vito Chichello sends in a ball. Picture: IVAN DUGANDZIC young midfielder Nikola Jurkovic was at the centre of many of Warriors possession wins and gave Vito Cichello opportunities to get balls in behind defenders. But Oakleigh was organised and forced turnovers with ease out of defence. In the 25th minute the game came to halt when Warriors defender Nathan Long had to be stretchered
off after a collision with teammate Nikola Jurkovic. Long finished second best in their attempt to foil a shot at goal and will miss at least two weeks with strained knee ligaments. Josh Pugh replaced Long in the game. With the half coming to an end, Oakleigh scored its opening goal with only seconds left when Jake McLean sliced a diagonal ball through midfield into the path of Ben Clarke who finished with precision. North Geelong continued trying to build up its play in the second half until the 65th minute when Vlado Zoric pounced on a through-ball to calmly slot past the advancing Daniel Zilic. The Warriors introduced Reardo Luka and Stipe Trbuhovic in an attempt to change things up but the knock to the team’s confidence was apparent as long, hopeful balls failed to find avenues to goal. This week will be a crucial opportunity for the Warriors to show determination and unsettle the league leader.
CORIO Bay provided refuge from strong winds last weekend, with anglers fishing close to structures catching trevally, pinkies and Australian salmon in great numbers. The trevally took baits such as chicken, while the salmon to 1kg were taken on soft plastic lures cast into the schools breaking the surface. Grass patches out from Clifton Springs’ boat ramp remained productive for squid and flathead. Drifting slowly and casting jigs accounted for baglimit captures of squid, some nudging 1kg, while soft plastics caught some impressive flathead in shallower, clearer water. St Leonards remained the go-to location for whiting, with the area just out from the yacht club hard to go past. Fishing the start of the ebb tide with pippies or tenderised squid helped anglers take fish to 40cm. Surf Coast rock platforms produced salmon just over 2kg. Brain Long and John Mole cast metal lures from the rocks to land numerous salmon in wet, windy weather. Portland produced tuna averaging 20kg, with the fish out wider less fickle. Some anglers also caught some exceptional table fish when deepdropping with the aid of electric reels in the same area. BANKED: Michael Evans’ brown Freshwater trout. reports were encouraging, with Michael Evans landing a brown trout of 50cm and a 47cm redfin on Fish Arrow soft plastics at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir. Fishing the evenings or early morning paid off for Michael, with the fish moving into shallower water. Fishing World Geelong’s Reece Pitt fished the reservoir late Saturday afternoon, catching a redfin just over 40cm. Lake Bullen Merri hosted some large Chinook salmon on the chew. I trolled around Potters Point, boating a pair of salmon reaching 2kg on flat-lined Daiwa Double Clutches. Other anglers took salmon of the same size while trolling down deep with downriggers. Most anglers noted the salmon were willing to bite throughout the day when the weather was overcast and windy. Lake Toolondo continued producing trophy brown trout. Leigh Furness and Charlie Zammit caught a nicely coloured brown of 2.8kg on a Tassie devil and another of 1.8kg on a mudeye suspended under a float. Over the next week St Leonards should be a reasonably safe bet for whiting and squid, with gummies likely out wider. The western district tuna will also be tempting, while freshwater anglers should try Lake Bullen Merri from either the bank or a boat.
Where would your club be without you? They’re players, coaches, committee members, volunteers and supporters. And every week, their club relies on the contribution of every one of them. But they’re also farmers, tradesmen, office workers, truck drivers and much more as well. And doing those jobs safely, in safe working environments, is vital. To the workers, their families – and to their footy club. PROUD SPONSOR OF COUNTRY FOOTY FOR 13 YEARS.

GEELONG coach Chris Scott is “acutely” aware of his team’s shortcomings, exposed in the first month of the season. Scott said the coaching staff understood what the issues were internally and the areas needing improvement. The inconsistencies in Geelong’s game against North Melbourne – leaving the side struggling at one win from four - were the most disappointing, he told Wednesday’s media conference. “There are issues we’re dealing with generally across the first month of footy that haven’t been patterns through the course of the game. “We had isolated periods here and there that really cost us. “The aim for us is to work on those inconsistencies, highlight the things we do well and when that slips a bit, make sure we fix it.” Geelong’s dry scoring periods were a concern. “We’d like to score more,“ Scott said. “We prioritise stopping the opposition scoring first. But we’ve scored freely at times and not at others.” Scott said home crowd support over the last two rounds had impressed him despite Cats chief Brian Cook calling for fans to keep the faith along what could be a “bumpy ride”. “The crowd were a little more involved in the game than in the past,” Scott noted. “Embrace the position we’re in and be as positive as possible.
