A firey centur y By KATH GANNAWAY WARBURTON Fire Brigade’s Centenary Dinner on Saturday night was a celebration of 100 years of community service, recognition of past and present members, and inspiration for the future. The dinner, at Oscars on the Yarra, was one of a number of events that will mark the milestone, including the history of the brigade exhibition at the Warburton Art Centre, and HelmART and the Community Open Day and Lantern Parade later this month. The dinner was dedicated to past and present members and, as Captain Hazel Clothier put it ... “their patient families”. There were some milestones and significant contributions recognised, including a Life Membership for member Mike Lazarus, and a gold key to a brigade vehicle named in his honour for former captain and brigade president Barry Marshall. Invited guests included CFA Board Chairman, Claire Higgins, and Chief Officer, Euan Ferguson, along with regional CFA representatives, Yarra Ranges O’Shannassy Ward representative, Cr Jim Child, and captains of neighbouring brigades. Ms Higgins said the dinner was an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifice, bravery and courage that had brought together the Warburton Fire Brigade each and every time over the past 100 years when the community had needed them. “Time and time again our volunteers put their lives on the line showing courage and bravery to keep our community safe,” she said. She also acknowledged the brigade’s active role in the community from bushfire information nights, fund-raising for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, emergency planning groups, the role they played in events such as Anzac Day and events that were part of the 100-

Thanking especially Captain Clothier, as one of only 13 captains in the history of the brigade, and President Marshall on 60 years of service, including 22 as captain, she said it was a reflection on great commitment that had produced a brigade built on a culture of teamwork and supporting each other.
Mr Ferguson spoke of the CFA’s increasingly diverse culture, which he said was seen in the fact that one third of the brigade’s members were women - including the captain. He spoke of the huge responsibility that Upper Yarra brigades had in such a high-risk bushfire environment and of the vision of the people who stepped
up to form the brigade 100 years ago and who had served over the decades. He thanked the current members and captain on behalf of the CFA. “The CFA has an important role and we rely on you,” he said. “It is incredibly important work, and it is appreciated.”
He said the community also has great respect for its CFA volunteers. “The community looks up to you with tremendous respect because they look to you as leaders in the community,” he said. See page 20 for more photos and details of awards presented on the night.

Environment Minister Lisa Neville, Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater volunteer Sue Tardif and Education Minister and Deputy Premier James Merlino look over land plans during the visit. 138518 while the Friends group was not in a position to purchase land, they were working with groups such as Trust For Nature to try to ensure that vital habitat currently in private hands were secured when it became available. She said all the research had been done to identify land, but that money was needed to make it happen. “Birds have already started to move into one of the properties,” she said, adding that some of the land was highvalue conservation which would only
LILYDALE’S Holy Fools charity has had a bitter-sweet ending to their van’s disappearance, after police located the stolen vehicle damaged and re-painted in Chirnside Park. Police from Maroondah Police Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) executed a warrant last week at a Chirnside Park address, where the van was found, along with two stolen motorbikes, stolen bikes and power tools. The van had been missing since the weekend of 22-23 March, when it was stolen with thousands of dollars of food and equipment during a break-in at Holy Fools' Swansea Road building. On the group’s Facebook page, it was announced that the van was written-off due to the damage, and that fund-raising had begun for a new van. The motorbikes were stolen from the East Melbourne area, while the tools and bikes were taken in burglaries in the Croydon Hills, Mornington and Lilydale areas. Maroondah CIU Senior Constable Matthew Brennan said the van had been spray-painted to disguise it, as it was covered in easily-identifiable logos when it was stolen. A 38-year-old Chirnside Park man was arrested, charged and remanded in relation to the thefts, and the matter is still before the court.
Crashed in fog MONBULK Police officers are urging drivers to take care during foggy mornings, after a “severe” crash yesterday morning. Leading Senior Constable Ken Tromp told the Mail that, at 6.20am on Monday 4 May, a 34-year-old Wandin East driver failed to give way on the corner of Monbulk Road and Ferndale road in Silvan, T-boning another car, driven by a 37-year-old Emerald man. “It was a pretty severe impact,” Leading Sen Const Tromp said. Both drivers received minor injuries, but were not taken to hospital. Leading Sen Const Tromp said the Wandin East man was expected to be charged with failing to give way. He asked drivers to be careful when making their way through the hills on foggy mornings, especially when the road was wet.

Ms Tardif said she felt they had been given a good hearing, and had been asked to submit concept plans. “The most important message was that research is really important for lots of reasons, and that it is not just about one bird species,” she said. “It is a state asset we have here, and we need to protect it. Ms Neville will be back in September for the release of the next batch of captive-bred birds.
THE Upper Yarra CFA's Recruitment Day has been a great success, gaining more inquiries than last year. The brigades held their Recruitment Day on 26 April at the Yarra Junction Safeway Car Park and Mall. Yarra Junction brigade member and event organiser, Steve Harry, said the brigades around Upper Yarra were looking for members who could be readily available during the day. “We got a very strong response this year and had three females come in last night,” Mr Harry said. “We needed more members during the day because that’s when people are at work and aren’t as available, which makes it hard.” He said the response gave the brigades more diversity, with the youngest person interested in joining 16 years old. “Some people were a bit scared at the thought but we got a lot of attention,” Mr Harry said. He said the age differential gave new members the chance to learn from more experienced members. A range of roles are available for new members, other than fire-fighting. To gain accreditation, the CFA requires three months of training but the brigade training schedules can adapt to the new recruits’ pace and availability. Another Recruitment Day will be held in October prior to the bushfire season. To express an interest in joining one of the Upper Yarra brigades, call Steve Harry on 0428 548 042.

require maintenance in the future if it was purchased. The other need, was for a volunteer co-ordinator. Ms Tardif said the volunteer pool had increased from 15 to 80 in recent years which was a fantastic reflection of the commitment and passion for the Helmeted Honeyeater and the reserve. But, she said, it came with a significant workload. Funding is the critical element, and

A BIG green shed at Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve (YNCR) could be a first-rate learning centre and showcase for the three Victorian State emblems for which the reserve is a critical haven. That was just part of the pitch delivered by Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater to Environment Minister Lisa Neville and Education Minister and Deputy Leader James Merlino last week. The reserve is home to a population of over 130 of the critically endangered helmeted honeyeaters, 40 lowland leadbeater possum, declared critically endangered earlier this month, and the floral emblem, Pink Heath. In a fast-paced tour of the plant nursery and the education facility, Ms Neville and Mr Merlino were briefed on the state of play with efforts to recover the animals, threats, including deer, foxes, cats, changes to the hydrology due to upstream grazing which is contributing to vegetation dieback, and the need to expand the size of the reserve to provide critical habitat for the birds. Environmental co-ordinator, James Frazer, said funds were needed to transform the shed which was currently used for education into a more functional teaching space. He said there was the potential to partner with universities and TAFE. “This could be a very good teaching space and the type of interpretive space that is warranted for our state emblems,” he said. In terms of habitat, the ministers were told the reserve would always be narrow and fragmented unless action is taken now to add land when it becomes available. Friends volunteer Sue Tardif said

Managing economic transition NEVER has it been more important for us to look after small business in Victoria and, more specifically, in the Yarra Ranges. Like most domestic economies around the world, we are experiencing a complete and inevitable restructure as we shift from a manufacturing base of large companies to specialised and high quality manufacturing, and a more service-oriented economy. For government, the hot button issue requiring management is the speed of the transformation. Slow change could see us fall behind our competitors. But change that is too rapid could result in the complete dislocation of

our workforce if they are not retrained and ready for new employment. This begs the question of government - what can we do to minimise the fallout? The cheaper and easier it is to change, the more likely business will adapt quickly and be able to afford the change rather than have to close altogether.

Two significant costs to business are logistics and red tape. Government has the power to influence these costs. Cumbersome, unnecessary red tape and infrastructure that cannot take increased demand from growing populations make it harder and more expensive to do business. The cost of such inefficiency ultimately gets passed on to consumers, which is why so many in the Yarra Ranges are feeling the pinch of higher living costs today. When living costs are high - we cut back our personal spending which forces business to make cutbacks and, sadly, it is often jobs that have to be
cut because the other expenses are less flexible. Complementing a strong infrastructure program should be brave reform to regulation, or costs will continue to increase. No longer can we afford to tolerate waste, inefficiency and the status quo. Now is the time to be bold and visionary and define what we want our economic future to look like. We need accessible education for a bright and versatile workforce. We need better roads and transport to open up access to more local and international markets that stimulate business expansion. We need less top heavy businesses and government departments so there
is more capital available for investment in projects that will keep us ahead of our international rivals. Perhaps, most of all, we need the will of our leaders in government to make it all happen. I am, like many Victorians, disappointed that the East West Link won’t be proceeding. It was a road project that would have cut delivery times and saved costs for growers and manufacturers in the Yarra Ranges. With the Victorian Budget now upon us, I urge the Andrews Government to fund infrastructure projects that will fill the significant void of not having an East West Link.

Our road to ruin By JESSE GRAHAM IT’S a road that visitors love and residents fear. Anyone who travels along the Maroondah Highway through the hills and up the Black Spur to Narbethong knows its winding corners and high speed limit make it a challenge for most drivers. When the cold weather and rains hit in autumn and winter, it’s a nightmare for emergency services crews, who are often called out to multi-car crashes and others running off of the road. On Monday, 27 April, the ambulance, SES, CFA and police were all called out to a crash a few kilometres past Selovers Lookout, where a 79-year-old Buxton woman drove off of the highway and crashed down an embankment. The car went down two metres before hitting a tree and a stump, which crumpled in the car’s doors. The driver was cut out of the car 40 minutes later and taken to Maroondah Hospital in a stable condition with neck and chest injuries and grazes. The car was expected to be written off. Healesville Police Leading Senior Constable Chris Grasby said that, according to a witness, the driver lost control and drove off the highway. He said it was the latest in a long string of crashes and accidents on the stretch of road leading to the spur, near the water tanks on the highway.
More troubling still was the fact that, according to Leading Sen Const Grasby, crashes going up the spur were becoming more common than drivers crashing on the way to Healesville, where speed was often a factor. “When you’ve got people coming off of the road driving up the hill, we’ve eliminated speed as a factor,” Leading Sen Const Grasby said. “Obviously, there’s something that’s not right with the road - it used to be people coming down the spur, but in the last 18 months to two years, we’ve had a lot more go off coming up than coming down.” Leading Sen Const Grasby said a solution needed to be found. “The road certainly needs to be looked at by an engineer or someone from VicRoads,” he said. VicRoads Metro South East Region Director, Aidan McGann, said that VicRoads was aware of the concerns about the road, and told the Mail it had been assessed in April 2013 and again in March this year. “VicRoads technical experts revisited the site to analyse the road surface and confirmed it to be in good condition,” he said. “It’s clear that there is a trend of crashes occurring and our challenge is to continue investigating what may be causing this, and how we can prevent that trend. “It may be a case of driving behaviour, or an underlying issue that needs more probing.”
Emergency services members carried a 79-year-old Buxton woman up an embankment next to the Picture: JESSE GRAHAM Maroondah Highway last week. 138451 Healesville SES Deputy Controller, Geoff Stott, said there were often crashes along the road, but said he thought the ratio was close to 50/50, in terms of driver direction, and sometimes due to heavy braking on corners. “There is more of a tendency to keep your foot on the brakes, which skids you off of the road,” he said. Proposals have been raised by emergency services members for guard rails on the left-hand side of the road towards Narbethong, but opinions are divided on their benefits and their risks to drivers. Mr McGann said that VicRoads
policies on establishing guard rails tried to balance the risks and benefits, and so were hard to implement on Maroondah highway. “In terms of providing guard rails, or wire safety rope barriers, they are installed two to three metres away from the traffic lanes to allow a stopped vehicle to be clear of traffic,” he said. “However, this isn’t always possible due to the proximity of vegetation or the edge of the road formation - wire rope barriers are also designed to minimise the risk of vehicles bouncing back onto the road. “Across the Black Spur, we have
installed guard rails and made other road safety improvements, and we will continue to investigate further options to provide a safer road.” In the meantime, Mr McGann said road users needed to be wary of the conditions they drove in, especially on wet roads. What do you think? Have you had trouble on the highway before, or do you have suggestions for drivers tackling the Healesville-Narbethong stretch? Send a letter to the editor to editor@mailnewsgroup. com.au or to 244 Maroondah Highway, Healesville, 3777.

Letters Letters raise the flag THE letters section of the Mail deserves a big round of applause for helping sort out a number of Yarra Glen issues: The ground mess north of the council tennis courts has been cleaned-up. Cheers for all the vegetation trimmers who finally got the job done. Men’s shed committee man, Paul Brewster, made certain the sausage sizzlers flew the correct ensign on the men’s shed flagpole on Anzac Day. Hip-hip-hooray! The Yarra Glen op-shop completely ignored Easter (and any reference to the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ), but somehow cobbled together a few posters about the Gallipoli landing, and added some paper flags for Anzac Day. Cheers for all the non-believers who volunteer! The Yarra Glen RSL wisely flew the Australian and New Zealand ensign side by side and included both national anthems in the 25 April ceremony. Three cheers and a medal, please! How many dollars did the Mail gain commercially from its very generous 14-page Anzac Day pre-promotion? Subdued cheers for honesty if the editor prints the question and gives a proper answer about media profiteering on Australia’s most sacred day. Not all of us are happy about the Anzac jingoism and souvenir biscuit tins. Noel Buchanan, Yarra Glen.

Dawning disappointment THE dawn service at Yarra Junction on Saturday was by any measure the most disappointing service I have ever attended. Much work had been done around the memorial precinct prior to the event, including the impressive avenue of trees to honour those Diggers who didn’t come home. Some of these who served with the 2nd Brigade battalions landed at Anzac Cove on the 25th – surviving this they went on to fight in the second battle of Krithia (Cape Helles Gallipoli) on 7/8 May, only to lose their lives. These men, along with all who served, and those men and women who still serve, deserved so much more than the lip service paid to them last Saturday. The dawn service is unique to Australia and New Zealand.
As a person next to me said at the end; “is that it; is this what I got out of bed for?” I have the utmost respect for the RSL, although having spent 20 years in the Australian Defence Force, I am not a member, but I have attended many services over the years and been the guard commander at many, including Martin Place in Sydney. The centenary has passed, and we missed the opportunity to do our Diggers proud. Hopefully a lesson has been learnt and we will do it better in future. Lest we forget. Trevor Williams, Don Valley.
Autumn is an inspiring time of year. 138489 Picture: ROB CAREW We were privileged to have a catafalque guard provided by the Australian Defence Force. Few services would have been fortunate enough to have one, but we did, although most of the crowd wouldn’t have known this, because no attempt was made to acknowledge them. The service itself lacked any semblance of structure and depth. It was not informative; in fact it was pathetic by any standard. The thousand-plus crowd who attended deserved so much more.
PRETTY angry over the proposed secret sale of this community/ratepayer owned asset. What is the reason behind it, as the park is usually packed out, come long weekends or holiday periods. What is the intention of the proceeds; perhaps they could be used to refurbish the Warburton swimming pool, or is this another asset that is to be sold because there doesn’t appear to be any interest by the council to repair it? Too many deals done behind closed doors, not enough transparency in council proceedings. As a community, we need to be available for more input into these types of decisions because in the long term, these select groups are supposed to have our interest at heart. But do they? George Kanicky, Launching Place.
Anzac papers labour of love GIVEN the extensive coverage the media has given to the Anzac Centenary over the past few months, it may seem untimely to broach this subject again. However, we think it highlights an important point in relation to modern media. One popular and valued letter-writer in the ‘Mail’ this week poses an interesting question: “How many dollars did the Mail gain commercially from its very generous 14-page Anzac Day pre-promotion?” Interestingly, this question is far from the first posed about the commercialisation of sacrosanct occasions, in particular surrounding Anzac Day. Just ask the people at Woolworths. As a media entity, we encourage a healthy level of cynicism, but always urge our readers to delve further. The media coverage not only around this region, but nationwide, has been nothing short of first-rate. It’s important to remember in many cases this coverage has been a labour of love. And we think it’s important to remember the level of dedication and commitment it requires from those producing the content, which in many cases goes above and beyond. Take, for example, the 100-page Anzac edition of our sister paper the Pakenham Gazette. Staff at the Mail, too, worked diligently to ensure such an important event was marked in the best way possible. The Mail worked hard to ensure the memory of these incredible Australians lives on, both in the present and for future generations. For the die-hard journalists, it is sometimes a bugbear there is a financial imperative in any kind of media, and newspapers are certainly no exception. But that’s the reality of modern media. In any case, we like to think it was completed insightfully and compiled in a fashion that has honoured the memory of our region’s Anzacs.

Stemming bowel cancer tide YARRA Valley Rotarians are reminding residents to make the most of life-saving bowel scans in May. Australia has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world with around 80 people dying each week from what, if found early, is one of the most curable types of cancer. Rotary has been involved in the program for around a decade and Rotarian, Dr Ian Tinney, says the benefits are proven ... and priceless. “In the process of making these screening tests available, we have found several people with bowel cancers whose lives were saved, he said.
“We have found a lot more with polyps and other bowel conditions that needed treatment and these would not have been identified without some sort of screen test; certainly not in time. Dr Tinney said one of the changes over time had been that people had got over any squeamishness about doing the test. “More and more people, having taken the first step of buying the kits, are now sending their tests back for analysis, he said. “There’s no use buying them unless they are sent back; that’s vital. The take-home kits can be purchased for $10 through pharmacies in Healesville, Seville, Wandin, Woori Yallock, Warburton and Yarra Junction.

The test is simple - just follow the clear instructions, return it to the pharmacy as soon as possible and wait for the results. One of the other satisfying outcomes from Rotary championing this life-saving program, and delivering the results, is that it has led to the Federal Government taking on a major role in providing the service in the future. “We (Rotary) are working much more in co-operation with the government than we ever have and by 2020 the government will be doing tests every two years, Dr Tinney said. “Over the last year or two, the government has come to the conclusion that it’s well worthwhile doing these scans and have really pulled their fingers out.

A RURAL Advisory Committee to be set up by Yarra Ranges Council will give farmers increased access to council, and a voice on rural matters. The council will call for expressions of interest following endorsement at last week’s council meeting of the terms of reference for the RAC. In March last year, farmers spoke out at the council’s Environment Strategy meeting, saying they felt they had no voice for their issues, that council was urban-focused and that they felt there was a disconnection between the farming community and the council. The RAC aims to provide strategic advice on issues and initiatives relevant to the management and development of the rural sector in Yarra Ranges. It will be chaired by a councillor and will include representatives of nine industry sectors - stone fruits, pome fruits, strawberries, nurseries and cut flowers, wine grapes, grazing, equine, forestry and rural service providers. representatives of the Department of Environment, Water and Land Protection (DEWLP) and Melbourne Water will also be on the committee. Cr Fiona McAllister said the RAC would respond to a demonstrated need. “The need for this has come out of a void,â€? she said. “I know our officers have tried hard to build those relationships, but there have been strong views from the rural sector and from different groups saying they lack the opportunity to engage with us at a strategic level, and on the ground. “Hopefully, by being involved at strategic level, it will deliver real benefits and save time in the long run.â€? Cr Jim Child said the group would meet four times a year and would be mutually beneficial for council and the rural sector. “I think this would be good because you would get that direct input into council for those particular areas (of the industry) and could also feed back to the advisory group, so it’s a twoway street,â€? he said.

Lifeline for the kids
Blanket cover for coat charity
By KATH GANNAWAY
By KATH GANNAWAY ONE of the things that came out of a hugely successful coat drive last year, were stories that pointed to an even wider need. The team at Yarra Valley Innate Chiropractic last year called for coats to distribute to people in need in the Yarra Valley, including homeless people and those who could not afford to buy new coats. The coats flooded in and were distributed by welfare groups and churches across the valley. Kerrie Siddle, one of the Innate team, said the success of the program, confirmed what they already knew - that there was a huge need to provide winter warmth to people of all ages. “Because of the fantastic response last year, and hearing many stories of people living in their cars and on the street, we have decided to add blankets to our drive,” Kerrie said. Kerrie said any coats or blankets that were clean, in wearable condition, and had a bit of warmth in them were candidates. The drop off points are at Yarra Valley Chiropractic clinics, 64 Hereford Road, Mount Evelyn, 4 Hoddle Street, Yarra Junction and 2 Bell Street, Yarra Glen. For more information, phone 5967 2240. Rallying for Kelly's kids from left Catherine Grbac, Kathy Fricke, Niki Silverman, Michelle Gilmour, Richelle Hoogenraad and Pastor Mike Baimbridge. 138495 there will be lots of fantastic, free family entertainment to make the day a big drawcard and a success. There will be jumping castles, a footy clinic, free Aussie Kids Rock band, a circus performer, petting zoo, kids craft and plant potting activities, a fun-filled toddler area and more. Heartland Church is sizzling sausages, and there will be snow cones, cones and One Pablo paella van. The Chamber of Commerce
is looking after cake and cookies, Ritchies IGA is providing soft drink and Valley Xpresso coffee van will be all steamed up - a perfect partner for the chamber cakes. While there is lots of free entertainment, Pastor Mike Baimbridge of Heartland urged people to be generous. “On one hand, this is a fun family event with free activities, but at the same time the central reason for the day is to raise some serious money for a future fund for the girls,” he said.
“So please, come along with money to spend on raffle tickets, to bid at the auction, and to support the other fund-raising efforts.” Kelly’s Kids’ Day is on Saturday 16 May from noon to 4pm at McKenzie Reserve. “IT’S what you do”. Kathy Fricke summed up very simply the reason the Yarra Glen community, and many others, have got behind Kelly’s Kids’ Day. “We just knew we had to do this to help,” said Kathy, who is secretary of the Yarra Glen Junior Football Netball Club. “It’s about banding together to help a family in need.” The family day at McKenzie Reserve in Yarra Glen on Saturday 16 May will raise cash for a trust fund for Kelly Crowley’s daughters, Sierra and Tahli, who survived the Labour Day crash in which their mother and brother Ethan died. The town has rallied behind a group of Kelly’s closest friends who have set up the fund to ensure the girls have what they need as they grow up, and to support them long-term. The Football Netball Club and Heartland Church have joined with Catherine Grbac, Niki Silverman and Michelle Gilmour to put on a family day as a first major fundraiser. The club has auspiced the event, taking care of insurance - a major hurdle cleared. “There was not a minute’s hesitation when we were approached to support this for the girls,” Kathy said. Catherine said that had been the response wherever they had turned for help - and they were overwhelmed and grateful. Donations by the hundreds are flooding in for an auction and mega raffle to be held on the day, and

Green Army is demobbed By JESSE GRAHAM HEALESVILLE farewelled its first Green Army group late last month, with members graduating after a six-month stint working around the town. The Healesville Green Army group officially graduated on Thursday 23 April at Coronation Park and were farewelled by a group of politicians, family and dignitaries. The Green Army had been working throughout Healesville and its surrounds with environmental and Landcare groups to improve and restore natural areas, through weed management and planting, among other means. Environment Minister Greg Hunt, who developed the Green Army program, and Casey MP Tony Smith came down for the event, joining Yarra Ranges mayor Maria McCarthy in congratulating the group. “To all of you: well done,” Mr Smith said. “I can see that you’ve had a great time doing it – you’re proud of the work you’ve done and you’ll take that knowledge and hand it on to others in the future, so well done.”

Picture: JESSE GRAHAM About 10 of the Green Army participants received certificates on behalf of the Australian Government and Conservation Volunteers Victoria, with some making heartfelt speeches to their supervisor, Sybelle Foxcroft, and others presenting her with a bouquet of flowers. Ms Foxcroft only had glowing words for her
colleagues in response. “They say all of these lovely things about me, but inside all of them live these incredible human beings who I know are going to big things in the future,” she said. “These young people here, they are going to be our future, and we have to teach young people
how to maintain our beautiful country. “When people de-stress, where do they want to go? They want to go to the mountains, the park, the ocean – we’ve got to look after it.” The Green Army’s work in Healesville came as a 2013 election pledge from Mr Smith, who promised the program would be deployed to his electorate in its first round. With their first stint finishing up, Mr Smith said he hoped the government would fund further Green Army projects in the town once it had finished its rollout. In the Yarra Ranges, other Green Army groups are beginning work in Mount Evelyn, Monbulk and along the Warburton Trail, managing weeds and assisting local Landcare and environment groups with projects. Mr Smith said the Yarra Ranges Council had been a strong supporter of the project, and helped it to hit the ground running. For more information on the Green Army, visit www.conservationvolunteers.com.au/greenarmy.
Man’s best friend is good enough for Maliki HEALESVILLE Sanctuary’s resident dingo puppy has a new lifelong friend, in the form of a friendly and furry Maremma named Dante. Dante, six months old, has been slowly introduced to one-year-old dingo pup Maliki at the sanctuary, with the pair growing closer in their daily walks and play-time. The two came out to play on Thursday 30 April, splashing in a creek, chasing each other through bushes and wrestling around while being introduced to news crews. Life Sciences Manager of Animal Behaviour Sue Jaensch told
the Mail that Maliki was originally brought to the sanctuary last year with her sister, Yani. Unfortunately, Yani died suddenly late last year, from what keepers believe was a snake bite. “It left us in a position where we had this young girl by herself,” Ms Jaensch said. “She was eight months old at the time, and so we had the unique challenge of finding a suitable companion for her.” Dingoes, Ms Jaensch said, are very territorial, so the sanctuary’s resident adult dingoes, Omeo and Dargo, were ruled out due to risks of
the adults attacking Maliki. “We chose a Maremma for a number of different reasons,” Ms Jaensch said. “Maremmas are naturally quite cautious of things – they are an animal that tends to be not-so focused on people and more focused on their environment, exactly the same as dingoes.” She said that Maliki took an instant liking to her new companion, and that the two have become as thick as thieves in their daily catchups. “Maliki’s attitude towards life changed – she was a lot more calm,
she was a lot more relaxed and definitely looks forward to those play sessions with Dante every day,” Ms Jaensch said. The pair will be exposed to each other more and more often before they are set up in the same area, where they’ll stay for the rest of their lives. Zoos Victoria is also training Maremmas to protect the critically endangered Eastern Barred Bandicoots, as part of their five-year Wildlife Conservation Master Plan. For more information on the plan, or on Maliki and Dante, visit www.zoo.org.au

Jean spent her life caring A family tribute JEAN Pockett was born in the old Castlemaine Hospital on 30 December, 1924, the middle child of John Alexander (Alec) and Edith Mary Blackmore of Toolangi. Jean’s older sister Joyce (Wilson) and younger brother Keith predeceased her; Joyce in 1997 and Keith in 2006. Jean’s parents moved to Toolangi around 1915 and much of Jean’s childhood and later life was spent in Toolangi. The first family home was near the top of Spraggs Road and later a new house named “Carinya” was built close to the main road about one and a half miles west of the school and township. From the very early days the family was closely associated with the Toolangi Methodist Church, Alec acting as lay preacher, and Edith as church organist for many years, an occupation which Jean took up later. Alec worked in the local sawmills, and became a forest overseer with the (then) Forests Commission. After leaving school, Jean lived for some time with her sister Joyce and her husband at Metcalf near Kyneton and worked on a large farm property called Granite Hill in the area. Jean eventually returned to Toolangi to rejoin the family and her younger brother Keith.
In the mid-1940s she met a handsome young man named Bob Pockett at a dance in the old Chum Creek School hall. Bob was working at Rimington’s Nursery at the time, near Toolangi. Bob and Jean courted for some years in preparation for their life together. Bob owned an old BSA motorbike with a sidecar and they enjoyed going shopping and taking drives up to the bush, particularly in the Murrindindi area with Jean’s brother Keith in his old Buick car. Bob and Jean were married at the Methodist church in Healesville on 26 March, 1949 and had photographs taken by Healesville photographer Elton Fox in his studio at the Old Mechanics Institute. It was the start of a wonderful togetherness that would take them through 65 years of marriage. The newlyweds flew to Tasmania and back on a DC3 for their honeymoon and had a memorable time visiting such places as Port Arthur, Eaglehawk Neck, Mt Field, Russell Falls, Launceston and Hobart. Married life began modestly enough in a small house at Rimington’s nursery, then Jean’s uncle, Mel Blackmore, organised a farm job for Bob at Yumbunga in Chum Creek, that came with a house.
Jean Pockett was a Toolangi girl who lived a long and full life. 138453 Not long afterwards, they purchased a 24-acre property in Toolangi. Jean was diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 1956 and took a few years to recover before in 1958 their first child, Val-
erie, arrived. David followed in 1960. Jean happily settled into her role as a wife, mother and homemaker, in a larger house. This was interspersed with her involvement in the local
community, particularly the local Methodist Church and the annual church bazaar which was always a big event. Jean also made the communion wine for church services in Toolangi. Like her mother before her, she made the communion wine, taking her slightly old raspberry jam and boiling it into liquid form and straining the seeds. She was involved with the Toolangi Red Cross, cricket club and CFA, Healesville Garden Club, Healesville Historical Society and spent many years in the mothers’ club of the Toolangi Primary School, later doing volunteer work at Healesville High School and working as a volunteer aide at Toolangi Primary School helping children learn to read. Jean always enjoyed playing tennis, usually on one of the guesthouse tennis courts, including one court patronised earlier by C.J. Dennis. Jean was a wonderful cook. She made fantastic biscuits and yoyos and was one of the best jam makers around. For years her famous raspberry jam, made on the wood stove, sold like hotcakes at the Arden Tea Rooms in Toolangi. Jean taught herself to play the organ and to read music, enjoyed listening to Gilbert and Sullivan and had a real fondness for the Welsh Male Choir, at-
tending many of their concerts in Healesville. Jean was overjoyed at the birth of each of her grandchildren, Kathryn and Matthew, and was affectionately known as Nanna. She loved them dearly and cherished the times she spent with them. Jean was kind, independent and caring. Very much her own person, she had definite opinions and if she had a view about something, then you would soon know it; though she would never do it in a hurtful way. Soon after a major heart operation in 2001 she moved into a small unit with Valerie in Healesville to be closer to medical care, then into Monda Lodge and for the last 18 months of her life, to Healesville Aged Care. Jean gently departed this life on Tuesday, 26 September, 2014 and is buried close by her parents and many members of her family at Healesville Cemetery. Jean lived through a Depression, a world war, and witnessed many changes to the world around her. She was much loved, much cared for, and lived a long and full life. And she will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank most sincerely the many people who sent sympathy cards and condolences and all those who attended Jean’s funeral service.
Cash comes running in By KATH GANNAWAY WARBURTON CFA and Upper Yarra SES have received a big boost to their equipment funding, thanks to the hundreds of people who pulled on their runners for the 2015 Community Bank Warburton Up and Running in February. Representatives of the bank and the Up and Running committee presented each organisation with $4000 recently, proceeds from the increasingly popular event. Event spokesperson Sue Hoffman said the 12th fun run was the biggest yet, drawing participants from over 190 different postcodes, including large groups from Healesville and Seaford. “The Killara Estate team awards were hotly contested, and an additional team category is planned for the next event on Sunday, 28 February, 2016,” she said. With just 10 months to go to the 2013 event, it’s a good time to visit the new website: www. warburtonupandrunning.com.au – get a team together or set a personal best goal.

The planting will be the first time that a Landcare group in

Participants will need to bring a change of footwear, such as gumboots or something waterproof, and gloves are recommended, though they can be supplied. FAMILIES across the Yarra Valley are being invited to branch out on their Mother’s Day celebrations this weekend, by taking part in a special tree planting in Badger Creek. Mt Toolebewong and District Landcare Group are holding a Mother’s Day tree planting on Sunday 10 May, along the banks of Coranderrk Creek (Badger Creek) on the corner of Badger Creek Road and Bluegum Drive. Split into three sessions, at 9am, 10am and 11am, the event is a relaxed way for residents to help the environment and create something long-lasting, according to Mt Toolebewong and District Landcare secretary, Karen Garth. “People will have instructions on how to plant, put some plants in, we’ll go for a nice walk along the creek to explain why that is so important and we’ll have a cup of tea and a biscuit to finish,” she said. The performances are excellent, Ultron is a witty and deeply intimidating villain, the cast’s chemistry still crackles and director Joss Whedon once again deftly juggles humour and pathos. The action is mind-blowingly creative and well-staged, utilising each hero’s unique abilities to thrilling effect. By KATH GANNAWAY WARBURTON Fire Brigade’s Centenary Dinner at Oscars On The Yarra on Saturday night was a celebration of 100 years of community service. Recognition came from CFA Board Chairman, Claire Higgins, and Chief Officer, Euan Ferguson. Acknowledgement also came to past and present members, including Life Membership to Mike Lazarus for his 30 years of service, and to brigade president and ex-captain, Barry Marshall, who has notched two decades as captain during his 60 years of service. Ms Higgins encouraged those in attendance to take time to reflect on the sacrifices and instances of courage that had brought together the Warburton Fire Brigade over the past century. He said the brigade had always risen to the challenge, often with volunteers putting their life on the line when the community needed.

Estate now an award-winner IN 1997, Sir Paz Estate planted the first vines on their picturesque property in the southern hills of the Yarra Valley. In 2001, their debut vintage was produced; a few barrels of Shiraz were crafted to be enjoyed by family and friends. That first vintage won a gold medal at the Yarra Valley Wine Show and went on to win a gold medal at the Victorian Wine Show. Now, nearly 20 years later, Sir Paz Estate produces an impressive portfolio of wines and has recently opened a purpose-built cellar door for everyone to sample and enjoy their award-winning wines. Open every weekend, visitors can sit at a table on the covered open deck, order a glass of their favourite wine and indulge in a meticulously crafted gourmet Mediterranean cheese or grill platter. Situated at 850 feet above sea level, the views are as spectacular as the wines. What’s more, a family member is always in the tasting room and happy to talk you through each wine and discuss any facet of the vineyard. Sir Paz Estate is open to the public every weekend and can also cater for special events. Bookings for groups are recommended. Open: 11am-5pm, Saturdays and Sundays. For more information, contact 5964 2339 or email info@sirpaz. com.

Healesville junior football UNDER 16 THE injury depleted Bloods struggled against a strong Emerald side that plenty of run. The next few weeks will see players returning from injury to provide the team with numbers to be able to match the stronger sides for run. Emerald 21.21 (147) d Healesville 2.2 (14). Goals: S. Gommers, M. Walker. UNDER 14 The team struggled against a stronger and more experienced Emerald side. The team continued to put in for the four quarters and the back line constantly repelled Emerald’s forwards’ forays. Emerald 22.9 (141) d Healesville 2.5 (17). Goals: N. Hellary, J. Collings. UNDER 12 The under-12s had perfect football conditions on Sunday at Emerald - blue skies, no wind and a dry ground. The boys knew that they were facing a good challenge this week and they responded accordingly with freeflowing, accountable football. Some very decisive passages of play were exciting to watch and the team is really embracing the idea of sharing the ball with their buddies who are in better positions. The backline was particularly solid this week and repelled plenty of good forward move-

Hyde-Thomas. Awards: A. Hyde-Thomas, C. Sibley, F. Lever. UNDER 11 The Healesville team got off to a slow start and let Emerald score a quick five goals in the first half. The Bloods then started to combine well and put pressure on the Emerald side to con-
tain their goal scoring and start scoring themselves. The backline held up well all day under numerous forward movements by Emerald. Some positive signs for the Bloods and the first win is not far away. Emerald 10.1 (61) d Healesville 3.2 (20). Goals: A. Briggs, D. Ebbels, D. Close. Awards: C. Frazzetto, J. Stoppa, Z. Hoiles, R. Dash. UNDER 10 Emerald challenged us early
in the match, but to our boys’ credit we were able lift our intensity and pull away from them as the match progressed. Our midfielders and half backs controlled the play, and our forwards got on top in the third quarter as we started to provide some more moving targets. In the end, it was probably our best team performance of the year, with 20 really solid contributors. Goals: C. Anderson 2, J. Christie, J. Johnson, C. Nyko, O. Tisbury.
Awards: J. Johnson, N. Millman, R. Fraser. UNDER 9 Great game by the boys. They kept to the game plan well, with long straight kicks, defenders keeping on their man and lots of backing up. Great goals by Anthony Druitt and great defending by Bailey. All round a good team effort. Goals: A. Druitt 2, J. Handasyde. Awards: M. Sissins, A. Druitt, B. Lewis, B. Rutley.
UNDER 14 Well played boys great team effort working as a unit. Continue to attack the footy and work as a team. Wesburn 7.9 (51) d Olinda 5.5 (35). Goals: Jack Ball 2, Angus Nelson 2, Tom Clements, Lachlan Cox, Caleb Sinniah. Best: Noah Andueza, Jack Bishop, Riley McNiff, Jack Ball, Angus Nelson and Josh Read. UNDER 12 Great weather and ground conditions made for a fast game. Wesburn 4.9 (33) d Olinda 4.4 (28). Goals: James Morgan 2, Ben Bourke, Bailey Humphrey. Overflowing with Pride for match By JESSE GRAHAM WITH just over a week until Yarra Glen hosts its second Pride Cup, the town is showing its colours, with shopfronts hosting flags supporting the anti-homophobia cause in the lead-up to match day. On Sunday 17 May, Yarra Glen Recreation Reserve will host a face-off between Yarra Glen Football Netball Club and Warburton-Millgrove in the second annual Pride Cup. The cup aims to recognise diversity and inclusion in the sport for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community and to campaign against homophobia in the sport. Last year’s event was brought about by coach Dean de Munk and assistant coach Sam Hills after Yarra Glen footballer, Jason Ball, came out as a gay footballer in 2012, to the support of his team and his community. As a show of support, the Yarra Glen Men’s Shed has been commissioned by the Yarra Ranges Council and the Yarra Glen Chamber of Commerce to construct 20 wooden versions of the rainbow pride flag, which will be put up in business windows along Bell Street in the lead-up to the match. Jason’s father, Yarra Glen Football Netball Club treasurer and Pride Cup co-ordinator, David Ball, said the community had supported the cup and its message, and that
the rainbow of the flag would feature prominently in the game. Both teams will wear specially made jumpers, which replace one of the team’s colours with the rainbow from the pride flag, which will also feature on the 50-metre line, the goal post pads and umpires’ flags. “We’re just ecstatic,” Mr Ball said. “It was quite humbling actually walking down the main street of Yarra Glen after the (2014) event, getting a lot of people congratulating the club on what they’ve done." “Generally, the support for the club for what we’ve done in the community has been outstanding.” This year’s Pride Cup will feature a special pre-match lunch, featuring keynote speaker, beyondblue chairman Jeff Kennett, gay amateur footballer Shaun Towner, among other speakers. Ex-Carlton footballer Brock McLean will be playing alongside Yarra Glen, and St Kilda Football Club players will run Auskick drills with children at the event. The 2015 Pride Cup will be the first match played on the Yarra Glen Recreation Reserve Oval, which recently had a $600,000 upgrade from the Yarra Ranges Council, and begins at 10am. Some truly epic league encounters By JUDY ORREN YVMDFNL DIVISION 1 SENIORS Belgrave 14.23 (107) d Olinda Ferny Creek 9.14 (68) THIS was an epic encounter for three quarters with neither team able to break away to a significant advantage. Belgrave led by just two points at quarter time, but Olinda snuck in front by the main break by just three behinds. The third quarter saw Belgrave have more of the ball but wasted its chances as it booted 2.7 to 1.4 for the term to take a six-point lead into the last quarter. Belgrave finished the day off well; they controlled the last term, booting five unanswered goals for the term to win by what was a comfortable 39-point margin the end. Belgrave best players: J. Pearce (1 goals), D. Collins, J. McDermott. Olinda best players: P. Rosier (1 goal), D. Noorda, C. Horner (1 goal). Wandin 22.26 (178) d Warburton Millgrove 9.7(61) WANDIN is really starting to flex its muscles and started this game off with an almighty bang; they slotted 12 goals in the first quarter to Warby’s one in an electrifying opening to which Warby had no answers. Wandin did continue to dominate the rest of the day although the goal scoring did slow down which was expected. They booted seven goals to three in the second and then held Warby to just one point in the third while they slotted four majors to take a massive 129-point lead into third quarter time. Warby did outscore Wandin in the last five goals to three, but that still didn’t add that much respectability to the scoreboard as Wandin won in a big way. Wandin best players: J. Bayliss (2 goals), J. Coombes, M. Polkinghorne (1 goal).
Warburton Millgrove best players: J. Iacono (1 goal), D. Brookes, A. Joyce (2 goals). Monbulk 11.10 (76) d Upwey Tecoma 8.13 (61) THIS was a very scrappy game that Monbulk just had the edge all day. Monbulk led at every change but the margin never blew out keeping Upwey in the contest. Monbulk led by 10 points at quarter time and stretched the margin to 22 points by the half on the back of a three goal-to-one second term. Upwey started winning more of the one-onone contests in the third, and they added four goals to two to reduce the margin to 13 points and set up a great last term. The last term was a quarter where Upwey had their chances but couldn’t split the big sticks as they booted 2.8 while Monbulk was just a little cleaner adding 3.4 to run out 15-point victors in what was a good battle all day. Monbulk best players: K. Gray (1 goal), S. Williams (3 goals), S. Van Seters. Upwey best players: J. Hevern, S. Dawson (1 goal), N. Wale-Buxton. Healesville 29.18 (192) d Mount Evelyn 10.12 (72) AT quarter time of this game, it looked like it was going to be an epic battle as Mount Evelyn led by just one goal, however, Healesville had other ideas as they slammed on eight goals to two behinds in a great display of hard running football to turn this game on its head and go into half-time with a 44-point lead. The second half was all Healesville. They continued their dominant running that Mount Evelyn just couldn’t contain. They added another eight goals to three in the third and topped the day off booting nine goals to two in the last to run out 120-point winners in what was a complete dominant performance that included 15 separate goal scorers. Healesville best players: C. Adams (1 goal), S.
Donkin (1 goal), P. Fermanis (3 goals). Mount Evelyn best players: M. Condello, D. Kift, W. Nicholson. Woori Yallock 19.13 (127) d Yarra Glen 11.11 (77) THE final margin was sizeable enough in the end but Yarra Glen was pretty plucky throughout this game. Woori led by just two points at the first change but Yarra Glen had three more scoring shots and arguably should have led. Woori showed their premiership class in the second as their skills shone out above Yarra Glen’s. They booted eight goals to three to grab a 34-point advantage by half time. The second half was a reasonably even contest as Yarra Glen didn’t let Woori have it all their own way. Woori added another eight goals to their total, while Yarra Glen slotted six which saw Woori win by a hard fought 50 points. Woori Yallock best players: C. Smedley, S. Kennedy, J. Matthews (3 goals). Yarra Glen best players: A. Moate (1 goal), A. Smith (1 goal), R. Gurney.
