Defence bid losing ‘badly’ By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG is losing in the race for valuable Land 400 defence jobs. The bid is $100 million behind South Australia’s and has been abandoned by State Government, posting zero incentives to host any of the $10 billion of army contracts up for grabs. Mayor Darryn Lyons and a key bidder yesterday fired salvos at Spring Street’s refusal to champion Geelong’s campaign. Cr Lyons said Geelong and Victoria were looking like a “laughing stock compared to South Australia and that hundreds of jobs were being jeopardised by the Andrews Government failure to back Geelong’s bid. “Geelong’s busted its guts to get this on the agenda but the State Government’s ignoring us and potentially throwing away billions to South Australia - it’s deplorable, an angry Cr Lyons said. A source from a team bidding for contracts said South Australia was clearly ahead in the race, with infrastructure and company incentives of $100 million compared to Victoria’s zero. “We receive very little contact from the Victorian Government, there’s no equivalent package of support currently on offer, he said. “As a team, we asked for the Victorian government to provide a couple of things - we’re talking a very small amount, a few hundred thousand dollars - but we’ve yet to receive any formal response. “It makes it very difficult for us to produce a bid based in Victoria when we have to continuously revisit our
decision to potentially look at Victoria ahead of South Australia. The criticism follows comments by Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson that with only a short window for international defence companies to submit their bids, it was “absolutely critical Victoria delivered an incentives package to ensure Geelong region won a “slice of this work. Cr Lyons said Geelong had staged delegations to Canberra, held workshops for industry and lobbied for a defence procurement office at Deakin University to bolster the region’s Land 400 prospects. But these efforts were “basically futile, he said, if the Andrews Government would not match or better South Australia’s incentives packages. The bidding team source told the Independent Victoria had a number of “natural advantages over South Australia but said they were not “currently being leveraged by the Victorian Government to get defence manufacturers to base themselves in Victoria. Land 400, also named Project Destrier, after the favoured mediaeval warhorse and knight’s jousting mount, will replace the Army’s old fleets of M113AS4 armoured personnel carriers, ASLAV light armoured vehicles and engineering support vehicles. The State Government maintains Victoria is well placed to attract Land 400 contracts and that the Geelong Procurement Office was set up to do so. But Ms Henderson said the office was still in the process of hiring staff and “well behind the eight-ball.

SECTIONS of Geelong big-name industry remain seemingly incapable of operating without being propped up by the taxpayer. Alcoa and Ford, both long-time dependants, have been unable to provide the jobs successive government largesse was meant to keep. These days it’s Avalon’s Jetstar operations, with a $12-million, 10-year handout that we’re told is essential to the region’s economic future. In State Parliament this week, Industry Minister Lily D’Ambrosio put the deal at $241 a flight, which she described as “in anyone’s terms ... a very good deal for Victorians”. Better than the previous mob’s one-year deal costed at “over $1000 per flight”, she said. Either way, something seems more than a little odd.
blokes who have been dossing down at the Johnstone Park War Memorial. Seems the cyclone fencing around the new library heritage centre construction site has been offering some refuge from passersby. IT might just be a crazy notion but Double Take can’t help wonder if it hasn’t found the solution to the Geelong Gaol impasse. If it can’t be sold off and developed because of its heritage status why not revert to its heritage use and put prisoners back in the place? Lord knows there’s no shortage of clientele looking for a berth inside.

WHO knew there was a Centre of Excellence in Eating Disorders? Now suffering an eating disorder is nothing to laugh about, but perhaps naming the organisation tasked with helping those who do might take some careful thought. Being excellent at eating disorders is not something to be highlighted, Double Take would have thought. Perhaps the Centre of Excellence in Eating Well might reflect the objectives a bit better.

Local charity funds hit ‘case of mistaken identity’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A LOCAL charity threatened with revocation of its charitable status was a case of mistaken identity, according to its chairman. The Independent reported two weeks ago a crackdown on local charities saw five have their charitable status revoked and a further 48 facing the same fate. UnitingCare Geelong chairman
Doug Thomson said one of the charities facing revocation was Uniting Care Concerns, a precursor to the current organisation. “Uniting Care Concerns ceased to exist on 30 June 2008 and was replaced by the current organisation, which has current charitable status,” Mr Thomson said. “Unfortunately people have confused the names and are reluctant to give donations.

VICTORIA’S most violent prisoners should be rationed to meat-free diets, according to an animal rights, group. But Double Take can’t see People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals members serving up vegan meals at Barwon Prison to inmates with the names of ’Badness’ or the killer ’General’. Then again the late Chopper Read, a one-time inmate of the old Geelong gaol, had the moniker to be useful dicing up a salad. But after what he did to his ears, inmates would be checking that they were really olives in the mix. PETA says not only is a plant-based diet less expensive, it also saves animals’ lives, protects prisoners from serious illnesses that can cost the state an arm and a leg to treat and is a great way to promote compassion and non-violence among inmates. The reason many are in the maximum security unit is that they have already done damage to arms and legs - and that’s only their minor offences.

Scams target Geelong SCAMMERS are focussing on the Geelong region with heartless fraudsters impersonating police and tax officers to relieve locals of their cash. The con artists have hit Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula with authorities warning businesses and residents they could be unsuspecting targets. Local identity Mick Robinson, from Newcomb, said he received two messages on his answering machine from the “Australian Tax office to inform you that legal proceedings against your name will proceed in the next 24 hours. “A collection officer will call soon to complete paperwork.”
A number was left for him to call, to pay the alleged debt. The Independent called the Sydney number and a man called William with a thick accent said he was from the tax office. When questioned further by the Independent about a fabricated debt the ATO pretender said he could not help. A further call brought up the same man, who did not have the ability to transfer the call to the main switchboard. Mr Robinson’s daughter-in-law from East Geelong also received a demand call from a woman at the “tax office” about an alleged $2000 debt. After she was challenged, the caller hung up. Mr Robinson said the scam should
be exposed as vulnerable locals might be ripped off. “I’ve reported it to the police and they said they had other calls of a similar nature,” he said. Police have urged anybody suspicious about cold-callers to contact them. “They tell the victim they have an outstanding tax debt or that they fraudulently or incorrectly filled out their tax return,” a police spokesman said. The caller threatens victims with legal action if they do not pay immediately and warns that their phones are tapped and not to call anyone or police would arrest them. An ATO spokeswoman said the tax office did contact taxpayers about owing money without
sending a notice or account summary. “We will not start any legal action until we have tried various other methods to collect the money, including setting up a payment plan.” Bellarine Peninsula businesses have also been warned about a scam concerning an alleged Victoria Police website. Police said the fraudster told potential marks he was looking for businesses to be part of a new police community website. He asked for $800 to be paid on the day. If they could not afford that he drops the price to a ‘today only special’. Bellarine Police Senior Sergeant Angelo Ferrara said that police had not and would never tout for funds.
Pen pals to meet at last
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
Downey HEATHER knows it was destiny that led her to embark on the trip of a lifetime. A confluence of dates representing anniversaries and memorials in the lee of Mother’s Day left her counting down the weeks since the start of the year. Heather left Grovedale for Livermore, California yesterday to meet her pen pal of 38 years, La Nor Smith, for the first time. “It was the perfect synergy of dates to leave on this visit. It was all meant to be,” Heather said between departure preparations. Heather is more used to assisting others with their holiday plans through her work at Bellarine Bayside. It was during her school years at the-then Morongo Girls College that the word-based friendship
began and flourished. “We were given options of what countries we wanted a pen friend from. Mum had been pen friends with someone in America for years and she encouraged me to do the same. “There is a genuine friendship there, it’s not just the words on paper, but we care about each other’s lives. “We have spoken on the phone off and on and now we use Facebook but we still hand write letters like we always have. “I feel as though we know each other so well, there’s no apprehension. People who have pen friends would understand how I feel about this.” The commitment has passed to a third generation with the daughter of one of Heather’s friends and La Nor’s god daughter now writing to each other.
Alcoa ’deal’ ANGLESEA deserves to know what kind of “sweet deal” any future purchaser will get “at the expense of the community’s health and the climate” if an Alcoa power plant sell-off goes ahead, says Greens MP Ellen Sandell. “The Anglesea power station receives State government subsidies estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars,” she told Parliament this week, adding the amount was uncertain because Alcoa enjoyed “complete exemption“ from freedom of information laws.
ROCK superstar Elton John will play at Geelong in December as part of his international “All The Hits Tour.” The ’Day on the Green’ performance at Mt Duneed Estate, Saturday December 12, is the second to be announced at Mt Duneed for the next summer season following the sold-out Fleetwood Mac concert.

Mum’s day to be fun day FAMILIES, friends and fitness fans from around the region will descend on the Geelong waterfront for the 2015 Mother’s Day Classic on Sunday. Geelong is among a record number of regional locations for the 2015 breast cancer research event.
The 4km and 8km events attracted more than 4500 entrants last year. The Geelong event was established in 2007 by local Julie Fisher, a breast cancer survivor, with the support of her daughter Erynne Trotter. Organisers are hoping for
“Geelong will be one of the first allocated sites for police custody officers,” he said. “This will put officers back on the beat, that will mean 30 additional police back on the streets,” Mr Iddles told the Independent. The boost is part of a budget commitment of almost $150 million over four years to introduce 400 custody officers, who will replace police on cell duties. The custody officers will have to be trained before receiving station allocations. A police shortage on the peninsula
became a hot issue in the lead up to the last state election with smaller stations on the coast opening only for limited hours, prompting an outcry from locals. This week’s budget allocated $7.8 million for more police to be stationed in the growing areas of Bellarine and Geelong and for longer opening hours at Drysdale, Portarlington and Queenscliff. In addition the roll out of custody officers will begin this year, with 400 more police to be released from babysitting duties across the state to investigate crime. In releasing the budget Police Min1183527-KK19-15
GEELONG will become one of the first service areas in Victoria to receive custody officers, freeing up more police on the beat. Police Association chief Ron Iddles said he expected 15 local police to be relieved of cell duties with custody officers taking up the role. With funding from the state budget allocated for 15 additional officers on the Bellarine that takes the progressive on-beat increase to 30 police. “It’s a good result for Geelong,’’ Mr Iddles said.
TORQUAY Netball Club urgently needs a new pavilion, South Barwon MLA Andrew Katos told parliament this week. “At the last election the coalition committed $300 000 to upgrade the Torquay Netball Club pavilion,” he said. “The girls and women who play netball in Torquay, a huge growth area, should not have to put up with such substandard facilities. I urge the minister to consider providing funding for the club.”

Geelong first to free police from ‘babysitting’ cells By PAUL MILLAR

ister Wade Noonan said: “Police who could be on the front line catching crooks are currently stuck babysitting people in the local lock up. It’s a waste of time, skills and resources. “We’re taking cops off babysitting duty and putting them back on the beat where they belong. They want to keep our community safe and we’re helping them. “More police on the beat in our growing suburbs, more drug and booze buses on the road, and more drug scientists in the forensics lab we’re giving police the resources they need to do their job and keep us safe.”
Rail ‘worst’ THE Geelong-Warrnambool rail line was “the worst serviced in the state”, parliament heard this week. Western region MLC Simon Ramsay cited comments by Colac Otway Shire chief Sue Wilkinson as he demanded the government indicate what it was doing to increase rail passenger services on the line.
Local Greens boss GEELONG’S Senator Richard Di Natale has been named head of the Australian Greens. The Otways farmer and GP replaces Christine Milne who stood down this week after replacing Bob Brown in 2012.

Culture vultures will also find a silent disco, underground performances, shadow puppets, Little Shop of Horris interactive art, light projections, pop-up choirs, rooftop cinema, drumming and theatre. And it’s all free. Mayor Darryn Lyons has been pumping the event, the second such affair, describing it as one not to miss. “I absolutely love what it brings to the heart of Geelong,” he said. “Creative, colourful and spon-
taneous performances - it’s art for everyone and is a great night out.” “It’s a night for exploring central Geelong, as ordinary spaces by day transform at night into something exciting, unexpected and very much alive.” The initial Geelong After Dark, last year, drew some 6000. It’s considered a showcase of local artistic talent - short, sharp and edgy art with surprises at every turn. The festival will run from 6 to 10pm at various sites through the city. Road safety blitz, but still a death A POLICE blitz on Geelong city centre, driver and pedestrian distraction nabbed more than 80 people, including almost 30 people on mobile phones. During the operation, 82 offences were detected in the eighthour period, including: mobile phone offences 27, disobey traffic signal 17, seat belt offence 12, unregistered vehicles 5, disobey traffic sign 2, and unlicensed 1. Geelong Highway Patrol members staged the operation in the CBD on 30 April between 9am and 5pm. Police said they were particularly disappointed with the
amount of people who continued to use their mobile phones when driving. Acting Sergeant Jamie Kahle said using a mobile phone while driving involved manual or visual distractions increasing chances of being involved in a crash. “All drivers face tough penalties for illegal use of a mobile phone or interacting with other visual display units, while driving, that are not driver’s aids,” he said. The penalties are four demerit points and a $443 fine. Meanwhile, a Leopold man
died following a head-on collision near Ballarat at the weekend. The 19-year-old was killed after a car travelling north on the Midland Highway near Yendon Number Two Road, Scotsburn, swerved onto the wrong side of the road and collided with an oncoming car just after 10am Sunday. Police said the man died at the scene. A 39-year-old woman was in a serious but stable condition with a broken leg after the crash. Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Corio federal candidates stoush:
Phone poll pollies play mum By PAUL MILLAR FEDERAL Corio MP Richard Marles has remained mute about an emerging threat to his seat from Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons. A mystery telephone poll is being used as a litmus test to determine whether Cr Lyons would have any chance of wrestling the federal Labor stronghold from Mr Marles. While the member for Corio went for
“no comment” others said “no chance” on surrendering the seat and the mayor had “no idea” who ran the poll. Yet there certainly was a poll in Labor’s heartland and it caused a rush of blood to the head when a union stalwart heard the recorded message on his telephone. John Kattwinkel, from Herne Hill, said he was quizzed on the performance of politicians from both sides of the spectrum.
“Then they asked me how I thought (the Federal member for Corio) Richard Marles was performing and I gave him five out of five,” the Labor supporter said. “Then they asked me if the mayor was doing a good job … and the next thing is they want to know whether Darryn Lyons would be a good selection as the next federal member for Corio,” Mr Kattwinkel said. “They are testing the water to see what sort of response they would get, but
vey. The mayor strenuously denied any knowledge of the survey. “I know nothing about it and why it is being done, or who is doing it, I’m just getting on with doing my job as the mayor of Geelong and I am totally focused on that,” he said. “I’m not being drawn on something that I know absolutely nothing about,” Cr Lyons said. A spokeswoman for Mr Marles said he did not wish to comment.

SUPER trawler Geelong Star is embarrassing Geelong and needs a name change, according to MP Sarah Henderson. The Corangamite Liberal called for the controversial trawler to be banned from fishing operations, labelling its work a “spectacular failure” following the recent death of eight dolphins and two fur seals in two separate incidents. “These dolphin deaths are completely unacceptable and the operation must be shut down,” Ms Henderson told the Independent. “It’s within the powers of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority to shut it down and it must take this action. It has lost the confidence of so many people and enough is enough. “But apart from banning the fishing operations I also call on operators Seafish Tasmania to change the trawler name. This vessel is no star of Geelong - the
name is an embarrassment for our city.” The AFMA has announced that mid-water trawlers in the Small Pelagic Fishery, including the Geelong Star, will only be allowed to fish during daytime hours as part of more restrictive measures. Ms Henderson welcomed the move but said it was not enough. “I do not consider that a partial ban will provide the confidence our community needs that this is a fail-safe operation,“ she said. Ms Henderson has called on her own government’s Senator Richard Colbeck, parliamentary secretary to the Minister for Agriculture, to ban the Geelong Star’s operations and demand its operator Seafish Australia show its “marine mammal exclusion device” is failsafe. The ship has suspended fishing operations following the latest dolphin deaths. “Whether the vessel is at sea
or in port, the name should be changed - I don’t want to see Geelong associated with it,” Ms Henderson said. “All the vessel’s operations take place a long way away from Geelong in southern Australia and around Tasmania - not in our waters. “In any event after these terrible dolphin deaths, it’s not a positive for our city that this vessel continue to be called Geelong Star.” Ms Henderson’s campaign against the super trawler was labelled “disingenuous” by the newly-announced Labor candidate for her seat, Libby Coker. “I was amazed to see this statement from Ms Henderson,” she said. “It is the Abbott Government which is allowing this super trawler despite warning from the expert panel. Ms Henderson is a member of the Abbott Government and has not said one word about it up in Canberra.”

North’s health centre go slow government is that opposition MPs are not to talk to Barwon Health to gather information in relation to this commitment, I ask the minister to provide an assurance that the government is committed to this health service for northern Geelong and to provide to the chamber a construction time frame for this facility.” Barwon Health North, the previous Liberal government’s response to a public campaign for a northern hospital, was to be a $28 million “innovative and integrated community-based ambulatory care service model providing an urgent care centre”, incorporating the Corio Community Centre. It reneged, however, on an election promise to build a $50m stand-alone community hospital at Waurn Ponds. Mr Ramsay said that when announced, 12 months ago, the Barwon Health North facility was heralded as unprecedented. Despite its non-hospital status, he said it “surprised many” that it took a coalition government to provide health funding to a region that was “strongly held by Labor but was ignored by both federal and state Labor MPs for decades”.
By NOEL MURPHY IT MIGHT be the number one item needed in Geelong battler northern suburbs but the Barwon Health North mini-hospital was given short shrift by Labor in this week’s State budget. Liberal MP Simon Ramsay took the Government to task in parliament for short-changing the project which he said the Department of Health wanted under way next year. “I have scanned the budget papers ... and the only reference I can find in relation to a commitment from Labor is on page 41 of budget paper four, where it indicates that the estimated cost of expenditure for Barwon Health North is now $33 million, and the expenditure as at June this year is $380,000,” he said. “There is a line item that suggests $1.7 million has been allocated for the 2015-16 financial year. I have googled Barwon Health North, but I can find no reference made to it by any of the sitting Labor MPs since that announcement in October. “Because I have been told that the directive from
Budget overlooks second city plea By NOEL MURPHY LOBBY group Committee for Geelong has panned the State budget for failing to hand down a specific ‘second city’ policy for Geelong. The committee had lodged a budget submission called for a second city policy to be developed by Regional Development Victoria, aimed at providing a strategic, long-term approach to planning and investing in the region’s future. “While there is no specific commitment from the State Government to deliver on this policy agenda, the CfG will continue to advocate for a second city policy
to be developed as part of the potential work of the Geelong Environment and Planning Authority,” CfG acting CEO Rosemary White said. Key features in the first Andrews Government Budget included 21 new Vlocity train carriages, a $70m Simonds Stadium expansion, $115m for V/ Line yards at Waurn Ponds, $30m GPAC upgrade and $12m Jetstar aid. Other initiatives include $7.5m to help auto workers and new businesses, a secondary school at Bannockburn, a Geelong work and learning centre, $8m to the NDIS and 15 new po-
lice, $3m for a Geelong Manufacturing Hub at Deakin University, $13.5m to the Portarlington Safe Harbour project. The Geelong Chamber of Commerce said Geelong was poised to benefit from a $500m Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund offering grants of up to $1 million for companies in industry sectors targeted for growth. The Infrastructure Development Fund was slammed by the Opposition, however, as “not even additional money” and “simply a grab-bag of projects that should have been funded through departments like health, sport, agriculture, environment and arts”.

$1m Balcombe murder reward bid By PAUL MILLAR TWENTY years after the stabbing death of Geelong teen Ricky Balcombe the original suspect remains the prime focus of the coldcase investigation. The 16-year-old Newcomb High School student was murdered at a rear entrance to the Market Square in May 1995 in front of many witnesses, including schoolchildren.
The teen was stabbed by a hooded attacker with a long-bladed weapon. Two witnesses died during the investigation, weakening the police case and the prime suspect, a man from Bell Post Hill, who was originally charged with the slaying, was later released, with court action also dropped. Cold case Detective Senior Sergeant Boris Buick has applied
to the Serious Crimes Rewards Committee to increase the reward for information from $50,000 to $1million. “All the information points back to the original suspect,” he said. “We’ve had a few calls, but until an eye witness comes forward and tells us they saw him do it, or that he told them he did it we cannot take the case forward.”

Breakthrough stomps musos
high pressure cleaner
By NOEL MURPHY MUSICIAN-SCIENTIST Richard Helmer’s never been one for letting the grass grow under his feet – especially on stage. The Hamlyn Heights engineer, researcher and inventor is in fact putting his feet to good use with his latest contraption, a stomp pad he’s optimistically declaring “one small step for musicians, one giant leap for sound”. Dr Helmer’s stomp pad is an e-textile accessory that gives musicians, djs and other performers a limitless array of sounds via mobile devices. As a drummer and guitarist, it’s opening new doors for him. “When I’m on stage in the
band and improvising to the audience’s response, I don’t want to be trapped by backing tracks,” he told the Independent. “I want a back beat that can keep up and follow me, adding punch when and where I need it. “Usually I have little time to set up, guests may be waiting or the unexpected happens and you don’t want to slow down proceedings. I need my equipment to be oh so simple to set up and use. “Stomp Pad feels natural, you just plug it in and it works, wherever I am. It’s also lightweight and easily transportable. “Any muso will tell you, you don’t want to be lugging around heavy gear! Pocket-sized Stomp Pad gets you tapping big beats
on your mobile device.” Dr Helmer has also invented an air guitar T-shirt that wearers play by moving their arms and body about. His invention of a boxer’s singlet with electronic sensors to distinguish between punches and what simply looks like contact could yet revolutionise the sport. He plays drums and guitar with the Geelong party band Madhouse and emerging acts The Beautiful People and Veeva. Dr Helmer’s interactive technology company Superinteractive has launched a crowd-funding campaign for the ground-breaking Stomp Pad at superactive. com.au.

Police look to rape case DNA help By NOEL MURPHY POLICE hope new DNA evidence can solve a 20-year-old Geelong rape case. A 24-year-old woman was assaulted and brutally raped on 23 September 1995 when she was on her way home from the Lyric nightclub in Geelong. Failing to locate a taxi at around 3am, the woman started walking along Little Ryrie Street when she was offered a lift home by a man parked nearby. The woman accepted the ride but when she questioned the direction he was going, the man became verbally and physically aggressive and punched her to the face.
ASSISTANCE: Police have issued this image of the suspect. She was driven to a secluded area along Dog Rocks Road in Batesford where she was physically and sexually assaulted. The man then drove the wom-
an back towards Geelong, dropping her off along Ballarat Road between Ballan and Rollins Road about 3.30 am. The man was described as southern European with dark collar-length wavy hair and of solid build. The vehicle was described as a light-coloured older model Holden Commodore sedan. Police are appealing for the person responsible to come forward and are appealing for anyone with any information that may assist with the investigation to contact Crime Stoppers. Report information confidentially online at crimestoppersvic. com.au or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Cooler days but rain stays away ANOTHER colder than normal month characterised April. Geelong was around 0.6 degrees cooler than the current 30year average and 0.7 cooler than the complete record from 1902. The main factors contributing to this result were that days were much colder than average and nights were fractionally higher. Maximum was 29.6 degrees on the 1 April and the lowest minimum was 4.3 C on April 13 and 30. April 19 was the coldest day

(15 C) and the night of the 14 and 15 April had the warmest minimum (14.5 C). This cooler result for March and April was not predicted by the Bureau of Meteorology for Geelong.

Below average rainfall was received across most of the Geelong region. Some Western District towns barely scored half the normal. Some Geelong suburbs such as Corio recorded the average figure but the urban area average (34mm) and the Breakwater AWS (28.4 mm) were disappointing. In the Otways, Mt Sabine, at the head of Geelong’s West Barwon catchment, appears to have received a whopping 233 mm. Water catchments remain on 59 per cent of capacity.

Swan Bay’s sea eagles at ‘risk’
Elissa has winter all wrapped Friday Elissa Friday
WRAPS, shawls, ponchos and capes: Do we really know the difference? Of course we do – kind of – not excluding those of us who could confidently define each one perfectly, and good on you for doing so. However, regardless of definitions, they all look great with different accessories and clothes and in slightly different ways. Whilst on my travels in Geelong looking for bargain trendy winter clothes, I found just the thing. A stylish ladies wrap, yes wrap, in Target Geelong. In grey and white hounds-tooth design it was stylish, lovely and soft feeling and nice and long to wrap up warm in, just perfect for the cold winter days ahead. There were other patterns to choose from, but this one caught my eye. Accessories were endless in store too, from bags, to scarfs, to leather gloves to complete this outfit. I spotted a gorgeous black clutch

bag, with silver colour chain handle for only $7 in the sale. Aside from the attractive price, it worked so well with the look, adding a modern twist, to quite a classic style of wrap. Nearby was a trendy looking boucle Panama knit hat for $25, a must have accessory with this look to keep warm and look trendily cool all at the same time. With casual or smart wear a knit Panama is perfect to complete an outfit in the colder months of the year. Hair up or down, the Panama hat is a classic, and will always look the business. If you pop a pair of sunglasses on too (when it’s sunny of course) the outfit will look super. Add a pair of gloves, in a neutral colour or as a way of introducing a brighter bolder colour of your choice. Lastly I spotted a pair of really nice dark blue-rinse straight-leg jeans, in the essentials section for just $10, such a bargain. Jeans are always handy to have, and they work well with all types of outfits, especially this one. Lots of jeans to choose from in store, and at that price you could get a couple of pairs. Happy shopping in Target’s Geelong stores.
RARE PAIR: The threatened Sea Eagle.

CAMPAIGNERS against microlight aircraft operations at the Bellarine Peninsula’s Swan Bay have gathered some 800 signatures arguing the airfield will endanger breeding sea eagles in the area. The protesters will lobby Bellarine MP Lisa Neville and Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons to reject the plans by Bay City Microlights for the base, on a Swan Bay farm. “As well as the parent birds, two fledglings have been observed in the nest on the shores of Swan Bay,” campaign organiser Wendy Oliver said. “The white-bellied sea eagle is one of our most endangered bird species. It is estimated that there are only 100 pairs left in Victoria, where it is listed as threatened. “The white-bellied sea eagle is sensitive to disturbance when nesting and may desert nests and young if confronted by humans or exposed to human activity. “The eagles have a flight path of several kilometres when foraging for food. That flight path lies along the foreshore of Swan Bay.” Ms Oliver claimed a microlight airfield within 2km of the nest and right beside the birds’ foraging flight path would create a significant risk of disturbance. In addition to noise, white-bellied sea eagles saw aircraft as potential predators, she said. “Although the applicant has proposed a number of conditions designed to avoid disturbance, these are not deemed to be sufficient to guarantee the survival and proliferation of these birds,” she said. “And these conditions are seen as impossible to enforce – particularly for external pilots using this proposed airfield.” Microlight aircraft have oversized hang-glider style wings and an aircraft engine, similar to those used in ultralight planes.

Letters Bali reforms I FIND Jan Johanessen's comments on the Bali executions quite appalling. It is clear that the two boys were reformed and not the individuals that committed the initial crime, as indeed a crime it was. It is also clear President Widodo had the ability to grant clemency, yet it seems Widodo chose instead to try to make himself look like a strongman, as former Premier Henry Bolte was accused of doing in regard to the hanging of Ronald Ryan. It is not a matter of what the executed men did then, but how they were recently: clearly reformed, decent men and it is a momentous disgrace that such a bizarre circus was allowed to develop every time these men were taken somewhere. I am against capital punishment, except in the circumstances describe by John Douglas, author of the book “Mindhunter”, where he dismisses the criminally insane defence many condemned serial killers attempt to use. Serial killers and paedophiles and that ghastly creature who killed Jill Meagher, I believe, abrogate their right to live amongst the community. They need to be permanently incarcerated, or gotten rid of – permanently. The Bali boys did not deserve to die, simply because they showed that had become thoroughly reformed, decent people. That does not say much for those who ordered their demise. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West
Don’t go soft I AM NOT outraged by the execution of the two Australian Bali 9 drug trafficking ringleaders – two notorious drug traffickers off our streets and those of Indonesia - permanently. Indonesia’s robust response to the drug scourge in their society – more than four million drug addicts – is to be congratulated rather than condemned. Our soft approach to drug trafficking is a sick joke. Michael J Gamble Belmont
Celebrity criminals IT HAS been well reported that the Australian media went over the top with its portrayal of the Bali nine deaths. The Federal government treated the families as if they were VIPs by supplying Commonwealth

DANIEL Andrews’ petty and disrespectful behaviour towards Geelong’s mayor, Darryn Lyons, (Independent 1 May) says much more about himself than Dan seems to realise. This damages his own reputation in the eyes of the public and leaves him with a much lower standing in comparison to the fine image of our local mayor. Darryn Lyons is full of life, he’s colourful, friendly, and one of Geelong’s greatest fans. He has the experience and the ideas to really put Geelong on the map and revive its commercial and tourism prospects to propel the city into a prosperous future. He deserves the full support and encouragement of everyone who will benefit from his vision, both in the City Of Greater Geelong and adjoining shires. Melva Stott Anglesea
Friendly tourists WE APPLAUD the moves to make Winchelsea an RV friendly town (Independent 1 May). As the owners of a motorhome since 2004, we are aware of the amount of money that the owners of visiting recreational vehicles leave behind in country towns all across Australia. In an RV friendly town, every small business in town benefits from the RV tourist, from the purchases of fuel, groceries, meals, hardware, gifts, souvenirs, coffee, clothing, motor vehicle services, batteries, tyres and more. If our local tourism gurus doubt this, they should talk to the tourism people in the many shires regu-
Needled Last week’s Independent page 1. larly placing full colour feature advertisements in RV magazines. All businesses in Geelong Otway are missing out badly with the current stance regarding the RVer, and many more towns in the area should be seeking RV friendly status. We totally reject the statements by Roger Grant who argues that motorhomers exploit beaches and bush tracks to the detriment of the local accommodation industry. Motorhomers are a different type of tourist. They spread their money across locally-owned small businesses in their travels, including reasonably priced caravan parks where they don't have to pay for things they don’t use. All they seek is electricity, water and a safe place to spend the night. Phil and Helen Parker North Geelong
Turning up the heat RAY BLACK (1 May) said he was hoping I would respond to his letter mentioning that NASA climatologists measured a slight heat increase in the oceans. The report he referred to is from Jan 2012. Here are two quotes from a NASA report last October: “The cold waters of Earth’s deep ocean have not
I CAN ASSURE Gary Oraniuk that I put no boot into any part of his anatomy (Letters, 1 May). I wished only to encourage a more nuanced view of one of medicine's more triumphant successes – vaccinations. Gary has to go overseas to frighten us with vaccine bad news. The UK compensation for sufferers from one vaccine, Pandemrix, during the 2009 swine flu epidemic, was for 60 sufferers. The 800 sufferers mentioned were spread over Europe. Some 60 million people, mostly children, were treated with Pandemrix, which was found to cause narcolepsy and catalepsy in one in 16,000 cases. The 13 deaths in Italy blamed on Novartis’Fluad were found to have no causative link with the flu vaccine. Around 7000 doses given worldwide in 2014 caused no safety concerns. The 2009 Gardasil HPV vaccination program in Andhra Pradesh funded by the Gates Foundation is subject to a case in the Indian Supreme Court. Some 16,000 girls were vaccinated and five deaths were reported. The cause of the deaths has not been established. Last month the American Medical Association announced the result of a study of 95,000 children given MMR vaccine. They found no link with autism, contrary to Gary’s earlier warning. There are always risks, however remote, in having or not having medical treatment. Assessing both risks and not being swayed by misinformation is part of the procedure. Tim Saclier Leopold

warmed measurably since 2005, according to a new NASA study, leaving unsolved the mystery of why global warming appears to have slowed in recent years. “In the 21st century, greenhouse gases have continued to accumulate in the atmosphere, just as they did in the 20th century, but global average surface air temperatures have stopped rising in tandem with the gases." The warming and cooling of the oceans are predominantly influenced by the sun, not CO2. There are many indications that the current 18 year global temperature plateau signals the peak of the current heating cycle and the Earth could be heading into a cooling cycle. Peter Rees Bell Park

An illustrated version of the book was first published in 1964 and featured paintings by Geelong’s own Robert Ingpen, one of Australia’s most prolific and successful illustrators. Ingpen worked closely with Thiele developing the setting and environmental themes.
Over 10 years later, the awardwinning book was turned into a film and became known as an Australian classic. The stage version of Storm Boy ensures the story will continue to enthral both children and adults.
Sheedy said his vision is to “introduce this classic Australian story to a new generation” and for people to fall in love with the story all over again. Performances held at the Playhouse Theatre at GPAC from 27 to 30 May.

POINTING AT PERCY: Otis Pavlovic and Anthony Mayor in Storm Boy.
1183250-LB19-15
ONE OF the most loved characters in Australian literature, Mr Percival, will be landing on GPAC’s stage this month. The classic Australian tale of a boy and pelican, Storm Boy, will come to life on stage for a whole new generation to experience. Colin Thiele’s story will be presented as a theatrical version and explores the relationships between Storm Boy and his father, pelican and Aboriginal friend Fingerbone. The play follows Storm Boy as he roams the beautiful, savage landscape of wave-beaten shores and saves three chicks after their pelican mother is shot. Tom Holloway has adapted the tale to stage in a co-production by Sydney Theatre Company with Perth’s Barking Gecko Theatre Company. Director John Sheedy said audiences will experience “an ancient form of storytelling” and an “almost Dreamtime story approach”. “Tom has brought all of these elements to the stage. I have admired his work for many years and in this collaboration the very spirit of the story is stunningly ignited,” Sheedy said. The title role will be performed by two young actors Kai Lewins and Otis Pavlovic. Storm Boy’s father, Hideaway Tom, will be played by Julian Garner and joining the cast as Fingerbone Bill is Jimi Bani.

Towering fun with all the Fawlty staff By NOEL MURPHY “BASIL!” The short, sharp admonishing tone of Sybil Fawlty to her deranged husband is one of British TV’s best-known comic phrases. The fear-stricken “Coming my little piranha fish” response it elicits from her lanky, deranged husband is another. In fact, a great many phrases from John Cleese’s immortal comedy Fawlty Towers are fixtures in the lexicon of fans and followers around the globe. The Monty Python ‘raving loony’ and his madcap efforts to run a hotel in Torquay, on the ‘British Riviera’, are widely considered the best British television series of all time. Which is why “He’s from Bar-
celona, it’d be quicker to train an ape”, “Don’t mention the war! I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it!” and “Hors d’oeuvres... vich must be obeyed at all times vitout qvestion!” are instantly recognised. And which is also why the Fawlty Functions review – with Basil, Sybil and Manuel – headed Geelong’s way is set to be a laugh-a-minute affair. Patrons are greeted at the door by Sybil, who tries all night to maintain a modicum of order and sophistication to matters. Basil, like a giant stick insect in full flight, fusses obsequiously over the patrons while Manuel’s language barrier problems brings a confused lunacy to the table. In short, anything that can go
wrong will go wrong. And diners can expect to be abused by the crazy chef or regaled by the major, whose addled marbles lend an even greater confusion to matters. The Fawlty Functions crew have worked at many restaurants and private functions over recent years, invariably to rave reviews and rapturous applause. Patrons shouldn’t expect to be mere bystanders either, they’re egged on in the show’s mad antics and never really know what’s coming their way. Fawlty Functions will appear at the Shell Club on Saturday 30 May. Oh, and don’t panic if you find a rat in your meal, it’s really just a Siberian hamster – named Basil.

What’sat on
MOST people think of the RSL only around Anzac Day but a potent reminder of its importance arises daily. The Geelong RSL venue, in Barwon Heads Rd, Belmont, supports the region’s veterans and their families by raising muchneeded funds. Although the venue becomes an annual focal point, every day is Anzac Day at the RSL. Manager Chris Bennett says the RSL is also breaking down perceptions it’s a seniors-only venue. While the regular steak night on Tuesdays and parmi-and-pot
night on Wednesdays are popular, the venue is much more. As well as a 200-seat main bistro, the RSL has a 110-seat function room with space for 150 at finger-food-style events. “We’re well-suited for private meetings and corporate functions and conferences,” Chris says. “We also have a couple of boardrooms, 16 and eight people apiece, and they’ve been going off. “With our new projectors and tables, we’ve really stepped the game up.” Families think the venue is great with its kids’ playground.

Calling for mentors
Karingal volunteer Graham O’Meara with participant Sam panning for gold at Dolly’s Creek, Meredith.
It’s all about choice “Each volunteering day is a fun day.” Every year Karingal recognises volunteer achievements and milestones, with some volunteering with the organisation for over 25 years. Karingal volunteers play a vital role in supporting people with a disability to be actively involved in the community by sharing their skills and experiences in over 100 different activities weekly.

Benefits for mentors include development or an extension of communication, organisation and leadership skills and an experience that will add to your own health and well-being or perhaps
your CV. There is also the sense of achievement that you will gain by sharing your knowledge to support someone else’s goal. To take the first step and become a mentor contact Lucinda Tucker at Volunteering Geelong on 5221 1377 or lucinda@volunteeringgeelong.org.au.

The varied activities - such as panning for gold or rock climbing - initially caught Graham’s interest but it is the social aspect that keeps him attending regularly. “The fellowship of the devoted Karingal staff and the uniqueness of each participant’s different personality has been really enjoyable.

EACH year 100 Karingal volunteers provide around 16,000 hours of service so people with a disability can live the lives they choose. THE VOLUNTEERING Geelong Step by Step Volunteer Mentor Program needs mentors. This is a great opportunity to share your valuable knowledge and experience with a person who has a disability and support them to develop the skills and confidence needed to be a volunteer. No prior mentoring experience is needed, training is provided and the role is short term, around five hours one day per week for around six to eight weeks. The Step by Step Volunteer Mentor Program was developed 18 months ago by Volunteering Geelong with the support of the City of Greater Geelong and Barwon Health. The current program is supported by the City of Greater Geelong and the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to assist their clients into volunteering. The program was created in recognition of the barriers to volunteering that may be experienced by people with a disability and the support that community organisations may need to integrate the program and develop inclusive practices. Volunteering Geelong is currently working with a number of community organisations like Diversitat who will be filling a volunteer administration role through the Step by Step Program. Garry Gow, Manager Training and Education has recruited Ashley and Adam into his team. Following some training for Ashley, Adam and their mentor their new volunteer roles will commence

MY 9.5 HOLDEN COMMODORE INTERNATIONAL
CASCADA: Styling of Holden Astra coupes is excellent with bold lines in all areas.
Holden Astra coupe’s back By EWAN KENNEDY THOUGH it’s still about 18 months before Holden shuts down its Australian assembly lines, the company is already making major moves to ensure it remains a leading force in car sales. One of Holden’s biggest moves is the reimportation of Astra models designed and built by Opel in Europe. Though it’s a German company, Opel has been controlled by General Motors for almost 90 years. Close design co-operation between Holden and Opel has worked well for Holden for decades, particularly in the Commodore field where the original models were virtually Opels with Aussie engines and beefed up suspensions. Holden Astras were sold by the tens of thousands for many years, until the decision was made in 2010 to cease imports and instead bring in lower-cost small and medium cars from GM factories in South Korea. An abortive attempt to revive the Astra nameplate was made in 2012, with Australian imports now carrying Opel Astra badges. The Opels had higher price tags to give the impression they were prestige European imports. Just 10 months later, Opel disappeared backwards, slashing prices of Astras to pre-Holden levels to clear the last of the stocks. Ah well, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Now the Astra is back and is again proudly badged as a Holden. Cleverly, the marketing people have chosen to only import the sports coupe variants, sold as Astra GTC and GTC Sport with a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine and the hot Astra VXR with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol. Styling is of major importance in any sports coupe and the Opel folks have done an exceptional job. A low nose and tall tail joined by doors with bold swage lines that form a semi-elliptical shape make a definite statement. If the lines look familiar, that’s because you’ve seen them on Opel-badged
cars. This overall Astra shape has been around for over five years now, yet still looks bang up to date. An all-new model is anticipated in about 12 to 18 months and we are really looking forward to seeing it. Inside, there’s a large instrument panel with large speedo and tacho, as well as other gauges, also in a sporting circular design. The 1.6-litre turbo engine has a useful 125 kW power and 260Nm torque if you buy an automatic. That lifts to 147 kW power and 280 Nm torque if you choose the six-speed manual. Way up in power is the Astra VXR, with genuine hot-hatch numbers of 206 kW of power and an impressive 400 Nm of torque, the latter running from 2400 to 4800 revs - this is the sort of engine that thrives on revs, though even below 2400 its happy enough to trundle along at traffic speeds. Obviously chasing genuine revheads, Astra VXR comes only with a six-speed manual gearbox. That sort of power and torque demands a genuine sporty ‘chassis’ for the VXR with 20-inch wheels and Opel’s FlexRide system that lets drivers choose from three ride settings: Standard, Sport and the track oriented setting titled ‘VXR’. The latter gives you faster steering and throttle inputs. Brembo front brakes are part of the package. We spent some serious driving time on the Holden Performance Driving Centre (PDC) at Norwell on the Gold Coast. The Astra VXR is a ‘real’ hot hatch, with huge amounts of road grip and a near neutral stance unless pushed extremely hard, when mild understeer creeps in. Braking that could be left well beyond the marks set by our driving instructors without the slightest sign of fade. This is the sort of car that ‘talks’ to you through the steering wheel and the seat of your pants - we love it. As the final tuning of the Astra VXR was done at the famed Nurburgring Nordschleife track in Germany our findings at the considerably smaller and simpler
Norwell PDC came as no surprise. Astra GTC has 18-inch alloy wheels, the Holden MyLink infotainment system with a seveninch colour screen display with satellite navigation and Pandora, Stitcher and TuneIn Radio apps. The GTC Sport gains 19-inch alloys, a body kit, alloy pedals and leather trimmed seats. As befits a hot-hatch, Holden Astra VXR has an over-the-top sports body kit, alloy pedals and a bespoke VXR steering wheel. Holden’s new Astra is an exceptional sports coupe with everything you would expect from a thoroughbred European machine. It has style, performance, handling and comfort. Should you regard yourself as a keen driver the VXR is certainly the one to covet, but there’s a lot to be said for the GTCs as well. Will a five-door Astra hatch join these three-door coupes down under? As usual, Holden refuses to comment on future products. But, may we speculate it will happen one day? Whether that day is with the current body style, or whether Holden will hold off for the next one is the big question. For the time being, the Astra is being sold as a convertible as well as the coupe described here. This time around, it loses its Astra tag and is called Holden Cascada. We have devoted a separate story to it. The complete 2015 Holden Cascada range is: GTC 1.6-litre turbo-petrol two-door coupe: $26,990 (manual), $29,190 (automatic) GTC Sport 1.6-litre turbopetrol: $29,990 (manual), $32,190 (automatic) VXR 2.0-litre turbo-petrol two-door coupe: $39,990 (manual) Note: Prices do not include government or dealer charges. Lexus sharpens up its image By EWAN KENNEDY THE three big German marques are at it hammer and tongs in the Australian sales race at the moment. No more so than in the crossover SUV field. The very British Land Rover is starting to get involved as well with its just introduced Discovery Sport. So it’s no surprise that Lexus has joined the fray with additional models, sharp pricing and a major advertising campaign. When launched the Lexus NX crossover came only as a hybrid, the NX 300h. Lexus NX 200t, the subject of this week’s road test, arrived a few months later and follows the European route of using a relatively small engine but turbocharging it to add power and, most importantly, plenty of torque. With a price list starting at $52,500 for the 2WD NX 200t, the new Lexus range is well priced in comparison with the German and British opposition. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder Lexus engine has a power output of 175 kilowatts, and 350 Nm of torque. The latter is produced all the way from 1650 to 4000 rpm, a handy range for the average driver who seldom exceeds 4000 revs, so maximum grunt is there all the time. An automatic transmission with only six forward speeds is becoming relatively rare these days so some will feel the NX is behind the field in having one. Like many current SUVs the Lexus NX is sold with either two-wheel or fourwheel drive. However, the Australian importer has put its emphasis on all-wheeldrive so the 2WD comes in just the one spec level, the Luxury. The all-wheel drive comes as Luxury, F Sport and Sports Luxury variants. Our test car was the topline Sports Luxury.
One of the first statements Akio Toyoda made when he took charge of Lexus was that he didn’t like his cars being described as conservative. That word will not be used when describing the Lexus NX. The huge ‘spindle grille’, deep swages in the doors and the sharp kick-up at the rear are more likely to be called radical than conservative. Note that the high window-line created by this style may make it difficult for smaller children to see out. It might be an idea to take the littlies on your prepurchase test drive to see what they see, or don’t see. Inside there’s the usual high quality Lexus design and materials set out in a design that’s not as radical as the exterior but which works well. The Lexus control system for the satellite navigation and other infotainment functions isn’t particularly easy to use although, presumably, regular owners of the cars will grow accustomed to it.
Lexus NX 200t Luxury and F Sport have a 10-speaker Pioneer audio system. There’s the option of a 14-speaker Mark Levinson system. The latter has Green Edge technology that produces double the output from the same amount of energy as conventional speakers. There’s Bluetooth audio streaming as well as two USB ports and an Aux port in the centre console box. The Aux can play video files through the multimedia display screen with a compatible four-pole cable. Lexus NX 200t has electronic safety features that include controlled braking, emergency brake signal, vehicle stability control, traction control, ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD). A reversing camera is standard. Lexus Dynamic Torque Control in the AWD models helps maximise traction and cornering stability. LDW+ warns the driver if NX is about
to cross lane markings without using the turn signals. It also assists with steering to avoid lane departure. The front seats give occupants good room and provide support that’s aimed at touring rather than blasting around corners. Handling dynamics are safe and competent but this isn’t a sporty SUV in the manner of the Germans in this class. Lexus has made its name over the past 25 years by providing a quiet, smooth ride in a luxurious cabin. Lexus owners say their main interest in motoring is peaceful progress in real world driving conditions. Having lived with a Lexus in that manner for a whole week we certainly agree with them The rear seat provides good legroom for most adults, but some may have to ask the folks in front to give up a little of their legroom.
Model range NX 200t Luxury 2.0-litre turbo-petrol 2WD five-door wagon: $52,500 (automatic) NX 200t Luxury 2.0-litre turbo-petrol AWD five-door wagon: $57,000 (automatic) NX 200t F Sport 2.0-litre turbo-petrol AWD five-door wagon: $63,500 (automatic) NX 200t Sports Luxury 2.0-litre turbopetrol AWD five-door wagon: $72,500 (automatic)

RADICAL: The shape of the all-new Lexus NX crossover will appeal to many.
This is hardly a criticism in this class of small-medium crossovers. Engine performance is good without being outstanding in the Normal mode which is likely to be used by most owners – choosing Sport mode certainly livens it up. There’s some turbo lag in each mode but that’s inevitable in this sort of engine and the use of a twin-scroll turbo helps minimise it. Once the engine is fully boosted and the six-speed auto has selected the correct gear Lexus NX 200t is a real pleasure to pilot. During normal driving the Lexus is likely to be at maximum torque due to the lovely spread from 1650 to 4000. This makes for relaxed driving and minimum emissions and fuel use. Fuel use during our testing was in the six to seven litres per 100 kilometres range on motorways and easy country running, rising to a more than acceptable eight to 10 litres per 100 around town. This compares well with the 7.7 L/100km official numbers. Lexus has sold the RX midsize SUV and the very large LX 4WD for many years in Australia and both have proven popular. The all-new NX is already showing every sign of outselling them both. Which comes as no surprise as this market segment is red hot at the moment.

QUALITY workmanship backed by a nationwide warranty is earning Geelong West Automotive a growing reputation as one of the top servicing and automotive repairers in the region. Award-winning mechanic Joe Atkinson says the Autumn St depot is kitted out with the latest equipment and staff are always upgrading their qualifications to be up to pace with the latest technology. “But we offer more than that,” the workshop manager says. “When customers drive away we want them to feel satisfied and safe, knowing that top-class mechanics have been working on their vehicles.” Twice named apprentice of the year, Joe says the 12-month, 20,000-kilometre national Repco warranty also gives customers peace of mind. “That warranty allows them to go to any Repco service centre around the country if they’re experiencing any problems,” he says. Experienced mechanics at Joe’s VACC workshop specialise in Toyota, Holden, Ford and Mazda. The crew services new vehicles and others under warranty while also being equipped to carry out general repair work. The depot also uses the highly acclaimed Hunter Hawkeye wheel-alignment system. “This is top of the range equipment, with highresolution cameras providing measurements that guarantee pinpoint accuracy,” Joe says. Conveniently situated in the heart of Geelong West and, the automotive centre only opened in February but already has a growing list of customers attracted to the business through the recommendation of satisfied clients.

IndySport Win buzz for Cats By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN ON THE face of it, 14th placed Geelong is confronted by a huge challenge meeting second placed Collingwood on Friday night at the G. There’s quite a spread between their respective percentages, courtesy of a couple of thumping wins the Pies have had. But the bookies have the two at identical odds and line spread, with an eye on teams the two sides have met so far this season. Geelong has encountered tough opposition in Hawthorn, Fremantle and North Melbourne, while beating the lowly Suns and a struggling Richmond. Collingwood thumped St Kilda and Carlton, held off winless Brisbane and lost to Adelaide. It’s most meritorious win was over a strangely quiet Essendon. If the quality of the opposition is any bearing, Geelong’s harder games should stand it in good stead. Coach Chris Scott, as ever, was taking a more cautious approach, while welcoming the opportunity to shine in a showpiece game. “Friday night footy is fantastic, our players enjoy playing on the big stage,” Scott said. “Collingwood is playing so well, we have to raise our game to their level. They’ve been pretty impressive. “Playing good opposition, it’s where young players can start building their reputations.” The win over Richmond, albeit by nine points, added to the buzz around the Cattery, Scott admitted. “You would prefer to say honestly that it doesn’t but the momentum is improved around the place when you win. “In some respects its validation, even subconsciously, that some of the things you are working on you are making progress with. “We’re a bit more positive. We’re still realistic with where we are at. We think we’re behind the best teams in the competition. “I’m not even sure who the best teams in the competition are. You’ve got the top three or four and then there’s a big group of 10 sides. I’m not sure who the best of them are. “I look at the draw and look further ahead and stop looking.” But it’s the middle of the AFL bell curve that means Geelong is still well in contention despite its tough start to the season. A couple of wins in the next three rounds could solidify the young Cats’ fledgling confidence. The only fly in Geelong’s footy ointment could be injuries, with reliable James Kelly joining Jimmy Bartel on the veteran’s injury list for at least a month. Scott hoped Rhys Stanley and Mitch Clark would be available, with premiership stars Andrew Mackie and Matthew Stokes getting closer to comebacks. But imported ruckman Hamish McIntosh suffered another leg injury and Billy

derrated defender Tom Lonergan, rated by Scott as in the top half dozen key defenders over the last few years, playing his 150th game.
Season to snag a salmon HEADING down the coast proved to be more than just a scenic drive with anglers banking great numbers of well-conditioned Australian salmon. Bruce and Faye Doherty have long wanted to try spinning from the rocks for salmon so when a break in the weather allowed last week the pair travelled down to Artillery Rocks. Arriving to find the swell on the rise Bruce and Faye started casting lures from a more sheltered section but it did not take long before the pair had landed numerous salmon to 1kg. With the swell still rising they decided to call it a day quite content with their success. Anglers fishing from beaches such as Bancoora have found Australian salmon responding well to lures such as sea iron sprat and sluks. The lead up to the high tide has been more favourable especially when combined with a north wind. Some of the salmon have reached the 2kg mark and are holding in the deeper gutters further down the beach. Typically the cooler months of the year see larger salmon move in enmasse which makes for a great autumn option. Other anglers fishing Bancoora have encountered gummy shark by fishing into the night with fresh squid as bait. Inside the bay Queenscliff has been the go-to location for those seeking squid. Anglers fishing both from pier and boat have found respectable numbers of squid. Anglers drifting over the grass beds just outside the Queenscliff harbour have taken squid to 1.5kg. In the harbour silver trevally respond well to 2.5” Z-Man grubs in motor oil colouration. Some of the trevally came in at an impressive 45cm and at this size they provide one of the best fight you can find on light tackle. Corio Bay remained productive for flathead and pinkie snapper at Western Beach among the moored boats. Soft plastics once again were responsible for taking greater numbers of fish. Those heading over to the grammar school lagoon had no trouble in landing pike to almost 90cm. Trolling or casting smaller slim profile hard body lures has worked a treat; just watch for teeth as these fish have a habit of biting though line. The Barwon estuary has for months now remained a great location for those seeking mulloway and bream. This past week saw some impressive captures with anglers fishing into the night boating mulloway to 90cm on fresh baits such as squid and live mullet. Just remember to take care when handling mulloway and return them to the water as quick as possible if you intend on releasing them. Bream have fallen to live bass yabbies.

Fishing the top of the high tide has proven most productive. Tuna reports from Port Fairy and Portland slowed late last week with most anglers finding them sporadic at best. Earlier in the week Chris Vasileski from Gone Fishing charters experienced some fast paced action with an eight-way hook up on school sized Bluefin tuna. After a frantic scramble Chris landed six tuna up to 20kg.
EARLY START: Darryl Luttrell was happy with this redfin. Last Sunday Apollo Bay held good numbers of tuna willing to take trolled lures. Nikita Cook and her farther Jamie launched out of Apollo Bay and successfully boated two. Nikita took the best tuna for the day weighing in at 11.75kg, made all the more impressive by the 6kg rated tackle she used to take down the fish. Nikita efforts have earned her a pending record. Darryl Luttrell took a drive to Newland Reservoir last week where walking the banks casting Rapala XR-6 spotted dog he took some beasty redfin to over 40cm. Darryl noted an early day break start paid off. A lot of anglers overlook the local rivers for trout and instead focus on the lakes which are renowned for producing much larger specimens. But with the rain over the last few weeks the upper reaches of the Barwon and Moorabool rivers has seen anglers find some healthy brown trout to 35cm. The best tactic has involved casting smaller profile lures such as Ecogear MX48s and soft plastics. Next week if the weather allows Apollo Bay is well worth the trip in search of tuna. Trolling skirted lures or Rapala X-Rap 30s are the way to go. Closer to home Queenscliff harbour will be hard to go past with 40cm plus silver trevally on the go.
Confident Warriors still searching for win By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors will head to Dandenong Thunder for Round 12 action with renewed confidence after a positive showing in its nil-all draw against league leader Heidelberg United last week. Dandenong are coming off a 4-2 loss to Oakleigh last week, where they had the resurgent Cannons in an even contest at half time with scores at 1-1 but lost their way in the second stanza with the Cannons piling on the goals. The Warriors may feel somewhat aggrieved to not have collected all three points but equally could have rued the day if not for the work of Daniel Zilic in
goals and the inaccuracy of Heidelberg’s forwards. The Warriors had the better of the first half, their best opportunity in the 29th minute being blasted over the bar after Reardo Luka rounded keeper Griffin McMaster. At the restart the home side continued to surge at goal and it was Luka again seeing his header whizz just wide of target. However Heidelberg built their attacks eventually and sustained pressure for a lengthy patch with a series of attempts. Their fortune wouldn’t fall as Zilic was on hand to deny their efforts with a keeping display to behold. Throughout the match the physical contest had the referee working hard to keep
the tempers at bay with Heidelberg notching up 6 yellow cards. In the dying minutes the tipping point came when Heidelberg’s Dan Heffernan was at the centre of a player melee, initially receiving a caution but unable to contain his anger received a follow up yellow card to receive his marching orders. With those tense moments wrapping up the match both sides almost snatched a late goal with Heidelberg hitting the bar twice, North’s Robert Zadworny spraying just wide of goal and Juso Julardzija failing to unleashing his shot after working his opponent off the ball.
