Bus route stays THE wheels on the bus will continue to turn for Noosaville residents after a campaign to have local streets removed from route 628 was shot down in parliament last week. On 26 March, Member for Noosa Glen Elmes presented a petition to parliament with 146 signatures demanding Swan Street, Wylah Street and Creek Road, Noosaville, be removed from bus routes because petitioners didn’t believe they were suitable for use by 12.5m buses. A response to the petition was tabled in parliament on 5 May, with the Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Jackie Trad, stating “the roads in the Creek Road catchment are suitable for use by both urban and school bus services. In her response, Ms Trad said Transport and Main Roads (TMR) had commissioned an independent audit of the Noosaville roads, and
the report confirmed the roads were safe to use. In a letter to petitioners advising of the decision, Mr Elmes said the Minister’s decision was final and the “matter is now closed. The issue of buses using the Noosaville roads was first brought to the attention of Mr Elmes in 2009, and since then three successive transport ministers have come to the same conclusion, Mr Elmes said. Mr Elmes said he didn’t expect the residents of the mentioned roads would be impacted by the decision as the petition showed no signatories from Swan and Wylah streets and just 25 from Creek Road, 11 of whom are not registered on the Electoral Roll. Of the remaining signatories, 72 were listed as living in the Noosa electorate but are not registered on the Electoral Roll, while four signatories were from far-north Queensland, 21 were from Brisbane and the remaining signatories were from surrounding suburbs from Pomona to Coolum.

A VISIT to see the Queen, a mutual passion for dance and a problematic cyclone - the love-story of Cooroy’s Ray and Patricia Britten is more exciting than most fairytales. The delightful couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last Saturday, and reminiscing of the years that have passed, there certainly is plenty to their romance. At 11am on 9 April 1955, Patricia then 21 and Ray 22 professed their love for each other in Yandina Methodist Church among 120 family members and friends. It was, however, lucky that the ceremony even took place, a cyclone having ripped through the small town. “A cyclone had just come through the town the day before and almost blown the church down,” Patricia said. “There were holes in the organ and the boys had to straighten parts of the building. “Corn bags were laid down on the ground so that my dress wouldn’t get muddy.” “We thought the rain might’ve been a bad omen, but 60 years on, I’m thinking it was otherwise,” she added quite amazed at how quickly time has flown. The cleanliness of Patricia’s elegant gown was however not the only concern of the day with a last-minute rush to find frangipanis for the bride’s bouquet having become top priority for her groom. “I really wanted three frangipanis in my bouquet but with the storm it was almost impossible to find any,” Patricia said.
A beautiful couple on their wedding day. Ray and Patricia Britten on April 9, 1955 “I managed to track down the only three left in the town,” Ray continued. “I remember having to stand on a car in the yard behind the butcher and post office to reach them from the tree.” A mechanic and devoted volunteer with the local firies, Ray met Patricia a year earlier. Patricia, a nurse at Nambour hospital at the time, had joined Ray and a number of others from the area in travelling to Brisbane to see the Queen when she had come to visit. “There was a group of us from around who headed down on the
back of two ‘Morrises’ for the occasion,” Ray said. “That was back at a time when there were no seat belts, so we all piled in,” Patricia added. Discovering in each other a mutual passion for dancing, Patricia and Ray continued seeing each other at local balls across the district. While for Patricia it was Ray’s fireman uniform and “nice legs” that first sparked attraction, for Ray it was less specific. “I guess we just clicked,” he said. “You don’t really think of it at the time.”
Sixty years on, the couple happily reside in their Cooroy house and are parents of two, grandparents to six and great grandparents of two. When asked for the secret to wedded bliss, both Ray and Patricia see eye to eye. “Always talk things through,” Ray said. “And don’t give up,” Patricia added. “We’ve had our arguments, but we don’t pack up our ports and head for the hills like most young people seem to do these days. “Marriage is about taking the good with the bad.”
Big bird belongs to the community By JOLENE OGLE A LOCAL business owner is calling on the community to show their Queensland spirit by helping turn the Big Pelican maroon. Laurie Stevenson of Pelican Boat Hire said the colour change was part of Queensland Week celebrations from 30 May to 7 June; a celebration of the state’s culture, heritage and industry. The week-long celebrations centre around the state’s birthday on 6 June and this year marks 156 years since Queensland separated from New South Wales.
Throughout the celebrations, iconic landmarks will be decorated to create a sea of maroon and the Big Pelican will be the featured Noosa icon. Laurie said the event was all about showing how passionate the community is for the state of Queensland. “We want to help efforts to turn the state maroon and we are asking for the community to help too,” he said. “We want to show how passionate we are about our statehood.” Although Laurie is part owner of the Big Pelican, he

Driver jailed GRANT William Eaton, 27, pleaded guilty to failing to stop his car at a random breath test (RBT) site on 14 November last year, plus one count of dangerous driving and one count of driving while disqualified. The court heard Eaton pulled in to the RBT before speeding away and driving across a solid white line and into the path of two oncoming cars.
No-one was injured in the incident, but Sgt Campbell described Eaton’s traffic history as “atrocious” with three previous drink driving charges that “show he is a danger to road users”. When Eaton was arrested for failing to stop and for dangerous driving, he had previously been disqualified from driving for a drink driving offence on 22 October last year, when he drove with a blood alcohol content of .150 per cent. Eaton was sentenced to six months' jail with a parole date of 10 June 2015 and disqualified from driving for 15 months for the dangerous driving offence. He was also sentenced to three months' jail to be served concurrently and a further four months' driving suspension for the disqualified driving offence. Eaton was also fined $750 for failing to stop.

TWO local men were sentenced to jail at Noosa Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, with one of them to spend at least a month behind bars. Local apprentice Zachary James Howson, 18, was sentenced to six months' jail for a sickening alcohol-fuelled attack on a man in a nightclub. The court heard Howson punched a man in the face twice during an argument in the men’s bathroom of a popular nightclub on Hastings Street on 13 March this year, leaving the victim with a split lip requiring stitches and damage to his teeth. Howson’s defence lawyer said his client believed he was defending his friend who he mistakenly thought had been pushed over by the victim, but Police Prosecutor Sergeant Melissa Campbell said it was an “unprovoked attack on someone who simply wanted
to use the toilet”. Howson was supported in court by his mother, who covered her eyes when the CCTV footage of the attack was shown in court. He was ordered to pay $2000 restitution to the victim and was sentenced to six months' jail with immediate parole and faces a 12-month ban from the licensed Hastings Street venue.

Big thankyou for volunteers Established in 1989, National Volunteer Week (11-17 May) is the largest celebration of volunteerism in Australia. Noosa Today would like to take this opportunity to highlight the role of volunteers in our community who make up the more than six million Australians who volunteer. To those volunteers who give happiness each month, week or day, we say thank you for your generosity.
Sue enjoys ‘showcasing’ Noosa SUE Ingram volunteers for Tourism Noosa, and has been a part of the 95-strong Tourism Noosa volunteer team for over 10 years. Why do you volunteer? My main aim when I first joined Tourism Noosa was to get to meet like-minded people in the area as I had retired here from Sydney. I did miss the social interaction of work life and the feeling that at the end of the day you had made a difference. What do you like most about volunteering? The opportunity to showcase Noosa. This is not very hard as we have so many great tours, whether they be fishing, cruising the river and lakes ... the beautiful river and beaches, and adventure tours, not to mention the many cafes and fabulous restaurants. One week Noosa can be a quiet coastal town and the next be hosting international events like the Noosa Triathlon, attracting thousands of people to the area. Most of all however, is the feeling of a job done well when someone walks out of the office with a map and information to make their stay here as enjoyable as possible. What do you love most about Noosa? Definitely the water. Whether it is walking along the river on Gympie Terrace, taking the dog for a run along Castaways Beach or just swimming in the surf at beautiful Main Beach. Name one thing on your bucket list. I have never had a bucket list and don’t plan to make one. What I do is take every opportunity that may come along and look forward to the next. What is something most people don’t know about you? That my real name is Jennifer not Sue.
Kie Wilson-McNaught has been volunteering with RDA for the past 13 years.

Margaret goes extra mile By KATIE DE VERTEUIL NOOSA local Margaret Robertson devotes a sizeable percentage of her time to brighten up the lives of children with disabilities. Head coach of the National Special Olympics Basketball team for the past 15 years, Margaret also coaches in two special schools in Nambour and Currimundi on a weekly basis. This is a commitment she has taken on over the past four years. Margaret juggles her voluntary work with her day-job as on-site manager care-taker at Emerald Resort, Hastings Street. Why do you volunteer? I coached generic basketball for 30 years in New South Wales and was asked if I would like to coach the Special Olympics team and I just love it.
What do you like most about volunteering? It’s very very rewarding. I honestly think I get more out of it than the athletes. When the athletes start achieving and they are able to show their parents, you look over and both have a huge smile on their faces. What do you love most about Noosa? The quietness, the beauty and the friendliness. The Noosa community is also very supportive of our team. Name one thing on your bucket list. I don’t really have a bucket list, but if I were to say something it would be for our team to get another medal when we compete at the World Games in Los Angeles later this year. What is something most people don’t know about you? I collect ceramic dolls. I have about 20 now, one I have had since I was three years old.

KIE Wilson-McNaught of Boreen Point has been volunteering with Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) since 2002. Aged 24, he is especially useful with the organisation’s larger riders and is a much-loved member of the RDA team. Born with myotonic dystrophy, Kie volunteers on a weekly basis to give back to a community which has helped inspire his passion for riding and horses. Why do you volunteer? Mostly for the fun of it. I have always loved horses and the people you meet are wonderful, too. What do you like most about volunteering? For me the best part of volunteering is the social side and being able to ride the horses. It is also incredibly satisfying being able to help others while giving back to the RDA community which helped me. Volunteering is also a great way to get out of the house and into the community. What do you love most about Noosa? I love that it is a quiet place and its natural beauty. Name one thing on your bucket list. To represent Australia in basketball. What is something most people don’t know about you? I have a jet ski licence.

Business is booming for the Cooroy No Worries RV Stop.
Sea of high-energy dancers By JOLENE OGLE
Eclectic mix at No Worries By JOLENE OGLE
Cooroy No Worries RV Stop owners John Morrow and Irene Zendher. Picture: DARRYN SMITH “A lot of people ring up from inland, and they want to know if they can stay,” he said. “Then once they have a booking they make their appointments with the specialists.” Travellers are also using the stop as a place to park their RV or caravan while they visit family and friends in the local region. “There’s nowhere for them to park in town or in Noosa, so they come here, leave their van and then go to stay with friends and family,” John said. Carol Lloyd is a local Noosa resident and a regular visitor to the No Worries stop, using the site to test her equipment before she and husband, Lou, set off to travel around Australia. “We’re very excited,” she said. “We’ve been planning this for 25 years and we can’t believe its happening.” Carol said she used No Worries RV stop because of the open space, low cost and security.
“I feel so safe and secure here,” she said. “And you can stand with your arms open wide and not touch another single thing. There is so much open space.” Irene said she and John enjoy a “very broad range of people” staying at the No Worries RV stop from “grey nomads” to those visiting hospital, and for only $5 per person per night, it’s no surprise the RV stop is only getting busier. But John said there needs to be more for people who are looking for low-cost accommodation. “It’s obviously needed,” he said. “I’m dead against free parks because I don’t think rate payers should pay for other people’s mess and toilets facilities, but there are a lot of pensioners who can’t afford $50 to $60 a night for accommodation.” Cooroy No Worries RV stop is located at 154 Holts Road. Phone John or Irene on 0427 006 018 for more information.

FROM chemotherapy patients to holiday-makers to those looking for an affordable way to visit family, business is booming at the Cooroy No Worries RV stop with a wide variety of people putting the site to use. Owners John Morrow and Irene Zendher bought the land on Holts Road as a nursery and have worked to convert the space to a recreational vehicle (RV) stop, offering up to four nights stay. “We certainly couldn’t have done this without the support of (Noosa mayor) Noel Playford and (councillor) Sandy Bolton,” John said. The RV stop opened in December last year and is the only stop of its kind between Caboolture and Gympie, which means business is growing fast for John and Irene. Irene said she and John, a former dairy farmer, decided to start No Worries as a way of indulging their hobbies. “We both love to garden and we love to be social,” Irene said. “We have people coming from all over Australia including Western Australia, and lots of people from South Australia.” But what started as a personal project has fast become a necessity for many locals and visitors. John said with a lack of low-cost holiday accommodation in the local area, it was common for people to travel from out west and use the RV Stop as a base while they undergo chemotherapy treatment or other specialist treatments at Noosa and Nambour Hospitals.

Wheel good lessons By KATIE DE VERTEUIL OVER the past two weeks, almost 500 Year 11 students from across the shire had a lesson in road safety, participating in the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program (RYDA). This year’s participating schools included Noosa District High School, St Teresa Catholic College, Noosa Christian College, Sunshine Beach State High School, Noosaville Flexible learning Centre, Good Shepherd Noosaville and Coolum State High School. The RYDA program, which was held at The House with No Steps, is run by the four Rotary clubs of Noosa in conjunction with Road Safety Education and is designed to create awareness in the minds of Year 11 students when they take those first steps on their way to becoming better drivers in the years ahead. Statistics indicate that learner drivers are less vulnerable to road accidents because of parental guidance in those early days than those young adults once they get their P-plates and drive independently of the guidance of their parents or driving school instructors. The program is divided up into six different sections, covering topics like Hazards, Distractions, Risks, Stopping distances, My wheels, Road choices and Crash survivor. Road Choices is presented by the police along with a very powerful slide show and the students
Almost 500 Year 11 students from across the shire participated in the recent RYDA session at The House with No Steps.
Year 11 students from St Teresa’s Catholic College were introduced to a 5-star safety rated car as part of the RYDA course late last month. are invited to ask questions on this very important subject. Crash Survivor is another very powerful session, presented by a survivor of a tragic vehicle accident which has left him to spend the rest of his life in a wheel chair. The program is designed to instil into those young minds the consequences of making poor decisions, how one’s life and that of their family and friends can dra-
matically change because of one poor decision. Impressed with the turnout, Rotary Club of Noosa’s Tess Alexandroff believes the program should become a compulsory part of the school curriculum. “I would like to see this program made compulsory and put into the school program to make this a “must do” by all students,” Tess said.
Noosa Heads Rotary chairman Chris Shoobert agreed. “Each year 300 young people are killed on our roads, 6000 injured,” he said. “If you can save the life of just one kid then it is worth it.” With the course focusing on teaching awareness, choices and responsibilities rather than technical driving skills it did not require the students to be behind the wheel. “When you are learning to drive, there is always an adult in the car with you,” Chris continued. “So that when it is time to drive by oneself, there is often a bit of “bravado” created, with many people thinking they are bulletproof, invincible. “This course is about changing this perception and through doing so, ensure safer roads for everyone.” Thoughts from participating students of St Teresa Catholic College. Harmonie Deane, 16: “I have found the course really helpful. I am now a lot more conscious of the road safety measures and just how important they are.” Jeremy Collins, 16: “I HAVE learnt so much out of today’s sessions. The stopping distance was something which I found particularly surprising and really useful to know.” Abbie Slavion, 16: “I’ve just got my Ls and the session has given me more confidence and awareness of what to look out for when driving.”

Music and movement makes festival magic THE 2015 Cooroy Fusion Festival took over Cooroy on Saturday with an eclectic mix of body paint, musicians and hula hoopers all taking to the streets to share a little magic. The festival is an annual event kindly sponsored by Noosa Council and local businesses such as Bendigo Bank, and is designed to bring together the community for a day of free family fun. This year featured bubble soccer, an animal petting zoo, a special performance from The Voice contestant Isaac McGovern and so much more with something for everyone and every taste. Noosa Today photographer DARRYN SMITH was there to catch all the action and rainbow unicorns as they wandered the streets.

Coast put on world map Benny’s
beat BENNY PIKE
IT really doesn’t get any better for the Sunshine Coast to pat itself on the back and show off to the world this weekend. Caloundra is hosting its annual winter (they’re kidding) race carnival at Calbould Park - a terrific two days highlighted by the $175,000 Linked Plumbing Caloundra Cup and Glasshouse Handicap with an estimated $1million in total prizemoney. While it’s all good for the area with plenty of equine lovers and race experts set to fill the town and spend plenty of cash, I still reckon the best asset from Calbould Park is the live racing broadcast that will be seen across the country and Asian Sky networks. Every time, the horses wind their way around the track, the backdrop always shows the ocean and the race caller is repetitive in reminding everyone “they are watching the action from the Sunshine Coast’’. I know that happens nearly every weekend, but the emphasis is increased greatly this Saturday, with the action as part of the TAB national system along with Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. Club chairman Harry Reid and CEO Mick Sullivan have worked hard to achieve the high standards, and it is a credit to all long time Caloundra supporters who have stood by the club thru good and bad times. The action moves up the motorway to Kawana where everyone’s invited to participate
in this year’s Wishlist Charity Fun Run. Another great opportunity to take in what the Coast has to offer, running in 6k or12k runs or just walk along the foreshore raising money for a wonderful cause. This charity is one of the good ones, with 100 per cent of registrations money going to their main program Child Development service. Their program supports public hospitals in Caloundra, Nambour, Gympie and Maleny. Registration is from 6am with start 7am on Sunday. Friday sees the start of this year’s national outrigger titles out of Mooloolaba, with four International countries PNG, New Caledonia, New Zealand and Cook Islands set to join the action. Individuals will battle it out first before the teams explode over the weekend. What a way to see the Coast, 25km just sitting off the coastline as the competitors duke it out for the coveted National Titles. The Internationals will enjoy the racing, as most will be in action in the up-coming July Pacific Games in PNG, so the hit out will help their chances. For the folk looking for the treat of food and a good wine, you can’t go past the fantastic Noosa International Food and Wine festival. It kicks off today and runs through until Sunday with a smorgasbord of things to do and eat. Jimmy Berardo and team have outdone themselves with the Lions Park looking a treat. Daily entry is $40, allowing you access to more than 80 cooking classes, and entry into many of the exhibitions and tastings. What to do list- champagne breakfast, sunset concerts, food trails just to name a few. Well done to everyone involved. Until next time
Good Shepherd students Blake Walker, Evie Bryce, Jesse Hardy, Jared Wytenburg, Asher Simpson, Ben Meyer, Kaitlyn Stock and Tammy Mellish are ready to take to the stage in their school's musical performance of The Addams Family.
Addams family values are strangely entertaining PREPARATIONS are well underway for Good Shepherd Lutheran College’s upcoming musical performance of The Addams Family. Each year the college produces a spectacular that not only showcases the talents of students but provides a unique opportunity for them to work on a fullscale stage production. This musical comes as the result of six months of preparation by staff and students
and is sure to be a curtain call not to be missed. For those who are unfamiliar with the Broadway plot, The Addams Family follows the story of Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, who has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family - a man her parents have never met. If that wasn’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides
in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s ‘normal’ boyfriend and his parents. The performances will take place on Friday 22 May, at 7pm, and Saturday 23 May, at 1pm and 7pm, at The J, Noosa Junction. Tickets are on sale now and available through The J website www.thej.com.au

Shark fears are toast for Sunshine Beach kids By FRANKIE LOW AND HANNAH MCKENZIE, YEAR 6 WHAT’S more dangerous than a shark? Sunshine Beach State School recently had a shark specialist, Chris Fischer from Ocearch, visit the school to help answer this question. Ocearch, an American company, researches sharks and their movements. When the company decided to research sharks off the Australian coast, chief researcher Chris Fischer and his family called Noosa their temporary home.

that the shark is not harmed. Chris explained that faulty toasters which kill over 500 people a year were more dangerous than sharks with four fatal attacks. Chris and his team decided to name a shark after our school. The students were invited to choose a suitable name for a shark which they called ‘Sunny’. The students can now go online and track Sunny their female Tiger shark, which was tagged off Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia. Sunny is 3.83 metres long and weighs 436.8kg.

A new dawn UNLIKE Rosemary White (Noosa Today, 30 April), I came away from the Noosa Main Beach dawn service feeling honoured to have been a part of this commemoration and reflecting on the sacrifices our servicepeople make. I don’t understand why your correspondent
I WOULD like to thank the very, very generous woman who donated $100 to our fund-raiser on the weekend at the markets. You are an inspiration and a very kind person. Thank you so very much! We hope you read this. TO the group of women who took to the Noosa Main Beach on the weekend and entertained us all with their surprise dance! What a fun morning. Thankyou.
A BIG thumbs down to the man who didn’t pick up his dog’s business from the Woods on Sunday. Don’t worry, we picked it up for you! BOO to the people who thought it was OK to leave their rubbish at the barbecues by Noosa River on Gympie Terrace. Have some respect. Other people need to use the facilities.
felt the need to be directed to the service - I can only assume that this is the first such service she has attended. All one has to do is 'follow the crowd’ at such events. Noosa Main Beach is pretty small and the screen that Ms White complains about should surely have indicated to her where the service was to be held. Ms White, this was a service held in the dark many people accustomed to dawn services brought torches with them so that they could read the programs! I don’t believe that people attending this special service expected to be “comfortable“ - this was not a concert hall nor an auditorium, but a beach, certainly more comfortable than the one our Diggers landed on in 1915. I congratulate the organisers on making this a special dawn service and I am sure that next year Ms White would be only too happy to volunteer for you at one of your Anzac Day events. Jill Phillips, Sunrise Beach.
Simple solution COUNCIL has expressed concerns about the number of Illegal overnight campers clogging parking spots around Noosa, and the fact that they leave Australia without paying their fines. The answer to this growing problem seems simple - have an officer place wheel clamps on the offending vehicles, giving them 24 hours to pay the fine, otherwise the vehicle is towed and stored in a secure location at further cost to the driver. The driver has no alternative but to pay the fine in order to continue their holiday. If they choose to abandon the vehicle council can contact the hire firm, and they can pay the fine from the pre-paid hire fee of the driver, releasing the vehicle back to the hire company. The offending driver is held to account either way. The feral drums will start beating around Australia alerting their mates that Noosa is not a place to camp illegally overnight, and the problem will be solved. Greg Steele, Noosa.

I’D LIKE to dispute Councillor Wellington’s comments from last week’s story (‘Noosa’s an open book’, 7 May). As an observer of council meetings I have a contrary viewpoint - rarely do councillors publicly debate agenda items. It’s obvious that decisions have been made beforehand, particularly when there are adverse performance reports like the Capital Works Schedule (Planning and Organisation Committee, 28 April) when nobody spoke about this disgraceful outcome, no-one defended the 33.14 per cent YTD completion rate which is less than half of what it should be. There have been many operational reports where inefficiencies have passed with little or no comment. As a principal instigator in denying Westfarmers/Coles re-development of Noosa Fair’s bowls site, perhaps the councillor could explain why this and other projects have been rejected. John Lobb Peregian Springs.
Mean means test AS a means of tightening the belt, the government is into means-testing those of us on a pension, to spread the pain more evenly throughout the community. At face value, what’s wrong with that? Well nothing, providing the means test applies to all. Let’s take a few luminaries who really don’t deserve the largesse the parliament gives them. The wastage in this area is a massive burden on the taxpayer. Is it justified? Do we get any value for money? Let’s face it, both Rudd and Gillard get a $200,000 salary for the rest of their natural lives, plus perks. It’s an insult given that neither was poor in the first place. A study in 2010 by The Daily Telegraph revealed that Mr Rudd, at 53, will receive well in excess of $20 million in allowances if he lives to 85. This is despite the fact he served only two and a half years as PM. Then there are a host of other benefits: the airlines gold pass (40 business class flights a year - probably around $60,000 a year), an entitlement to his own office (worth about $120,000 a year in Brisbane) for the rest of his life, and four staff (probably at a cost of about $240,000 a year). What? The Rudds’ new multi-million dollar home doesn’t have room for a home office? He is

And Mr Rudd will receive all of these benefits on top of his wife’s estimated $210 million fortune! Add to this, Ms Gillard - a former communist who has embraced the capitalist ideal - has already ditched the brick veneer in Altona for a swanky pool-side ponderosa in leafy Adelaide, no doubt made possible by a $500,000 salary and ongoing perks. And this applies to a whole swag of retired PMs. Let’s start means-testing with them. Stan Krasnoff, Noosa.
Some democracy COUNCILLOR Tony Wellington has now made it perfectly clear (Noosa Today, 7 May) why we must endure letters from John Lobb. When you live in an open society, it is easy to find fault in the minutest of detail. Mr Lobb sits in on every Noosa Shire Council meeting and takes pot shots at every little thing he can invent. Why doesn’t he do this for his own Sunshine Coast Council? It is because they won’t let him in! He can’t find fault with his own council because he can’t find out what’s going on. So we can rest assured that things are fine in Noosa but I wouldn’t be so assured living within the boundaries of our southern neighbour. They managed the ultimate lobotomy. Steve Hall, Cooroy.
reply to J. Sing (who perhaps does not live here) it would appear that Kay Fielden is the only person other than myself who is making any effort to address the bat issue. If everyone else affected were to take some action instead of just grumbling, you would realise that Kay and myself are not the problem. Also, I do wear earplugs and can still hear the noise, and one could not be expected to wear earplugs all day, or stick them up one’s nose to reduce the smell. You point out that “at least the bat faeces doesn’t contain the nasties ours does”, but then there are not half a million humans flying over every night, screeching and yelling and dropping faeces everywhere. It is also interesting to note that people are incredibly quick to kill crocs, sharks and kangaroos when they inconvenience their lives, but we can’t touch the bats. Norah Lilley, Tewantin.
Lack of respect NOT forgetting the disrespect to Daniel Morcombe and his family, I am at a loss for words how some of our Queensland Judiciary can act with such disgusting behaviour. It’s obviously a situation of “it’s all about me”. You would have to wonder which side of the law some of them are on. Ernest Wright, Sunrise Beach.
Who’s to blame? Familiar with bats IN REPLY to Kay Thornton’s letter and cartoon - I have to say that I am fairly familiar by now with all aspects of bats and their “raison d’etre”, and am not ignorant or fearful. You mention that I moved into “their” territory, however, I can only reiterate what I have said many times - I did not buy a house next to a bat colony - there were no bats here when we first arrived, neither had there been for some time prior to that according to my neighbours. I did not buy a house on a main road, or under the aircraft flight path because, unlike the other people you mention, I would not get used to the noise, and I knew what kind of lifestyle I wanted in retirement, which did not include constant noise, smells and mess. I was interested to read in Kay Fielden’s letter (Noosa Today, 23 April) that health authorities were able to disperse bats seeking to reside in trees around Noosa Hospital. One would think that if they were able to do that there, then the same would apply to us only five minutes away. In
SO POOR Mr Jim Berardo is struggling, what a shame. So who is to blame this time? Not enough sand on the beach? Hasting Street in need of another revamp? Bad weather? No, it’s these terrible under-qualified mums and dads running pop-up restaurants and food vans everywhere, and he wants his good friends at the Noosa Council to get rid of them. I think it’s time for you to toughen up Mr Berardo and stop complaining every time your business is slowing down. We are in the middle of a recession, times are tough, and businesses all around you are closing down, especially in overpriced Noosa. And if you are going to use your connections to the council, then try to get them to remove these ridiculous laws about noise restraints imposed on most restaurants; Hastings Street has become the most boring place on the coast to dine out and people may actually come back with some music and entertainment. Six of the best KALANI is the latest development for Gympie Terrace and will present to the market six Stephen Kidd designed luxury river-view apartments. Boasting an excellent mix of design and functionality, the Kalani complex will be one of Noosa Riverfront’s best residential buildings and is the first development of its kind on Gympie Terrace in seven years. In a highly sought after location, just moments from awardwinning restaurants and boutique shopping, and centrally located to be just minutes from Hastings Street and The Junction business centre, the Kalani apartments are not expected to be on the market for long. The Kalani development will feature six apartments with two floor plans; one featuring two bedrooms and the other a threebedroom design. There will be two apartments per floor with the two ground floor apartments enjoying access to a private pool each, while the penthouse apartment will boast raked ceilings. Throughout the apartments, all living areas will face northeast to make the most of the stunning river views, winter sun and cooling breezes in warmer months, while careful consideration has been given to the layout of the apartments to ensure yearround comfort. An emphasis has been placed on creating homes that are lowmaintenance but high-lifestyle, with a great location, clever floor plans and luxurious fittings and finishes throughout the building. The plans are subject to Noosa Council’s final approval, but given the rarity of this opportunity buyers are urged to register immediately for a chance to secure an apartment.

Time is right to commit LOCAL real estate principals are calling on investors to “have a go” after the Reserve Bank of Australia cut the cash rate to two per cent earlier this month. In response to the cut, Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey urged Australians to get out and invest saying the rate cut was good news for families and small business and would stimulate economic growth and help create more jobs. “Now is the time to borrow and invest, whether you are a household or a small business, now is the time to have a go and invest,” he said. “Invest in the things that help create jobs.” Richardson and Wrench Noosa principal Shane McCauley said markets like Sydney “didn’t really need another cut”, with auction clearance rates already at 80 per cent each week, but the cut can only mean great things for the Noosa property market. “Sea-changers and investors are bringing their cheque books to Noosa and purchasing,” he said. “With interest rates at their lowest levels since the early 1960s, it makes upsizing more affordable and we are seeing a lot of that in our market. So, as our
Federal Treasurer said, now is the time to have a go.” Housing Industry Australia (HIA) economist Geordan Murray said the drop in the cash rate was in line with market expectations. “In the lead-up to (the RBA) meeting there had been a strong view that a rate cut would occur at some point in the near future, a position strongly endorsed by HIA,” he said. “While the aggregate level of new home building activity is at record levels, the strong conditions have not been experienced universally across the industry. “Conditions in home renovations market remain subdued and many regions outside of the major eastern seaboard capital cities have not seen the uplift in new home building.” Mr Murray said the low interest rate environment has played a role in boosting industry activity and the rate cut would offer the support needed to reignite business investment more broadly.
The recent rate cut is expected to further stimulate the Noosa property market.

Keep industry in the right zone NOOSA Council is asking property owners and real estate agents to help make sure new Noosaville industrial estate businesses comply with the zoning. The council’s infrastructure and planning director Martin Drydale said it was important to protect Noosaville for “industrial functions”. “Residences, community organisations, commercial and retail business, and most sport and recreational land-use activities, should not operate from industrial premises,” he said. The council has written to landlords and real estate agents to

principal industrial centre and the only industrial area in the coastal part of the shire. “The reason for having a town plan is so we can ensure various land-use types are appropriately located to best serve the community,” he said. “Property owners and real estate agents play an important
role in helping to uphold the town plan’s integrity. “Just as the community would likely object to a factory opening up in a retail precinct such as Noosa Junction, retail shops and professional offices are not appropriate in industry zoned areas.” Mr Drydale said new and

Well you be the judge at this fully-costumed rocking show performed by some of the best musicians in Queensland. This show takes you back to the ’70s - the era of free love, long hair and flairs where bands like The Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Daddy Cool, Cold Chisel, the Four Seasons, AC/DC, the Cars and
The Knack ruled the airways. Then the ’80s - the decade of decadence - where excess was the accepted thing, big hair, lycra, leg warmers, fluoro and MTV was ruled by big names like Michael Jackson, Starship, Bryan Adams, Wham, Aha, Huey Lewis, Queen, Van Halen and Bon Jovi. Have you got a favourite era? Get ready to party like its 1989 or 1973 - it doesn’t matter as this show has you covered.
Come along dressed in you most outrageous ’70s or ’80s gear and join in the fun. What you can be assure of is that you’ll get a fun-filled rocking night of all-time party rock classics from the ’70s and the ’80s. Catch the show at Tewantin Noosa RSL on Saturday 16 May in the South Bar, from 8pm. Team the free show with a dinner reservation and make a night of it. Dinner bookings recommended on 5447 1766.

Girls just want to have fun By KATIE DE VERTEUIL
It's set to be an epic battle at the Tewantin Noosa RSL on Saturday from 8pm. noosa.starcommunity.com.au
THE year is 1945 and as peace extends across Europe on VE Day, British Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret are allowed out to join in the celebrations. It is a night full of excitement, danger and the first flutters of romance for the two young royals who dress incognito so as not to
be recognised by the general public. Directed by Julian Jarrold, A Royal Night Out is a comedy-drama starring the delightful Sarah Gadon (Princess Elizabeth) and Bel Powley (Princess Margaret). Taking the audience on a journey back in time, the film’s costumes and sets conjure a flavourful sense of period.
A Royal Night Out is a story of love, the excitement of youth and the adventure of two girls who just wanna have fun. WIN A DOUBLE PASS: Here’s your chance to win a double pass to see A Royal Night Out at BCC Noosa Cinemas. Simply email your name and phone number to competitions@ noosatoday.net.au

Why I travel I’M WRITING in the sky tonight, on my way to somewhere else, sad to leave my kids and grandkids for a time, but happy as usual for the change. And tomorrow we’ll be in the other place we call home, with its usual welcoming assault on the senses, and the sweet, intoxicating feeling of an exotic other that you know so well, but never quite get over the strangeness of actually being there. My friend and colleague Ross Phillips recently turned me on to the writing of a man named Pico Iyer, and appropriately tonight, as we fly over the northern songlines, I am listening to the beautiful, soothing music of Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu while I mull over a col-
lection of Pico’s blogs, which in my view touch on the same basic tenets of people and place. In an essay called “Why We Travel” Pico writes: “We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves. We travel to open our hearts and eyes and learn more about the world than our newspapers will accommodate. We travel to bring what little we can, in our ignorance and knowledge, to those parts of the globe whose riches are differently dispersed. And we travel, in essence, to become young fools again – to slow time down and get taken in, and fall in love once more.” I love the simplicity of this passage, and I wish I had written it myself. But no, my own travel ramblings are from a less lofty height. In my forthcoming book, “Travel Gets You Nowhere”, I ruminate on a fairer for all airline policy in which total weight is the pricing consideration. Consider it for a moment. Such a policy would mean that most people would lose weight before a flight and therefore travel

healthier, while unrepentant fat bastards would be priced out of the market and wouldn’t be crowding you out of your seat in cattle class. So that’s where my head is at. But back to Pico Iyer, who quotes George Santayana in “The Philosophy of Travel” about the need to “escape into open solitudes ... to taste hardship, and to be compelled to work desperately for a moment at no matter what.” I like sitting by the pool with a paperback and a cocktail as much as the next guy, but I also identify with this concept of sharing for a moment the hardships of others as a means of placing your own blessed life in context. Says Pico: “Never more than on the road are we shown how proportional our blessings are to the difficulty that precedes them ... Few of us ever forget the connection between ‘travel’ and ‘travail’, and I know that I travel in large part in search of hardship – both my own, which I want to feel, and others’, which I need to see. Travel in that sense guides us toward a better balance of wisdom and compassion - of seeing the world clearly, and yet feeling it truly. For seeing without feeling can obviously be uncaring; while feeling without seeing can be blind.” For the next couple of months this column will be coming to you from South East Asia, from some familiar and not so familiar places. I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I know we will. Jim’s big bash AS MUCH as I love good food, the super-chef culture kind of crept up on me. God knows in the good years I tried to catch up with it, mortgaging houses to pay for fish and chips at Rick Stein’s joint in Padstow, Cornwall (where there is a sign next to the order board that says “Phil Jarratt always has a table”, but unfortunately it refers to a British union leader of the same name), shouting the family to Jeremy’s 15 in London, and throwing silly money at Wolfgang Puck’s rubbish in Los Angeles. Now I’m more than happy with a green curry at Halse Lodge or a local’s double at Gaston, and the odd special night with Mary and Michele at Little Humid, or Jim and Greg at Berardo’s, but as no-one can be unaware, it’s Food and Wine Festival time, and I wish I was there for the fun of what one local wag described to me recently as “schoolies’ week for chefs”. Jim Berardo and his vast team put heart and soul into what has become Australia’s premier foodie event. Like most events in our town, the Food and Wine Festival hasn’t had an easy road to get where it is today, and huge kudos is due to Jim and partner Greg for the hard yards they have put into it. My tip: surf all morning and eat, drink and be merry in the Lions Park all arvo. Go on, treat yourselves. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

Smooth for spring

beauty
WINTER is on the way so now is the time to get to started on hair removal to ensure smooth, hair-free skin for the next spring/summer season. Sharon Cassidy from Riverside Beauty discusses IPL technology, the most advanced technology for permanent hair removal. “Quantum Intense Pulse Light (IPL) uses a method known as selective photothermolysis which involves disabling hair growth mechanisms by raising the temperature of the hair follicle high enough to damage the germinative cells while protecting the surrounding tissue offering a safe comfortable treatment,” she said.
The eyes have it WOMEN of the Sunshine Coast rejoice – Noosa Brow Co. is open and ready to bring you perfect brows all year round. Having amassed a cult following in Brisbane, brow aficionado and Noosa Brow Co. principal Hannah Dahl set her sights on the idyllic Sunshine Coast. “Until now, the women on the Sunshine Coast haven’t had a dedicated brow and lash specialist and I am loving being able to provide that service,” Hannah said. Hannah’s technical skill and passion for transforming the face have long been the reason behind the delight of her loyal clients. “Being a perfectionist I do revel in the technical aspects of performing brow and lash services, but the ultimate joy of my work is seeing the absolute delight of my clients when they see the final results,” she said.
“A lot of this amazement comes from women who have had brow mishaps and feel like the only solution is to wait months for them to grow – knowing they don’t have to, delights them. “All of our services start with an initial consults which I think is really the most important part of the entire service. Clients often come in with particular goals, so I like to establish what those are straight away to make sure that they are getting the most out of each visit. “From there, we assess the client’s skin and tailor the methods of shaping and colouring to suit their needs.“ For details call (07) 5474 1218, email info@noosabrowco.com.au or visit online www.noosabrowco. com.au

The treatments really are fast and effective …
“Winter is the perfect time to remove unwanted hair and it truly can become a problem of the past. Using IPL there is a break of about four to six weeks between treatments so now is the time to start so you can avoid the sun and are ready for a hair-free summer. “The treatments really are fast and effective. “There are now several treatments in the market that assist with hair removal, but IPL administered by trained beauty professionals is the best way to go.” Book in now and introduce a friend and only pay $60, normally $90 for basic bikini or underarm IPL treatment. Call Riverside Beauty on 5449 9744 for a free consultation.

Ray with patients from Eden Rehabilitation Centre. Picture: Supplied
wellness INSPIRING HEALTHY LIVING
Ray shares his care EDEN Rehabilitation Centre is located only 15 minutes from Noosa in the heart of Cooroy and offers all the comforts one can expect from a private hospital. Staffed by passionate healthcare professionals, Eden is a 48-bed private hospital that has a reputation as a caring centre where patients feel at home. Recent in-patient, Ray, suffered a brain haemorrhage in late July last year and stayed at Eden Rehabilitation Centre for one month. Ray has shared his experience, which he describes as inspiring, and now volunteers at the centre to help share his joy for rehabilitation work. “I was diagnosed with a brain haemorrhage (a bleed in the brain), which resulted in memory and orientation loss such as understanding place and time, speech problems including difficultly retaining written and spoken information and word finding difficulties,” Ray said. “I was later transported to Eden Rehabilitation in Cooroy, where I was to stay for the next month, and a further three months as a day patient. It was this exposure to the specialist care and therapies at Eden that inspired me to

become a volunteer at Eden Rehabilitation.” Ray said the expertise of the health staff and interactions with other patients was motivating. “I want to inspire other patients with this motivation, as I get a lot of personal satisfaction when interacting with people and watching them improve with time,” he said. “I’m feeling that in some ways I am contributing to their well-being and quality of life. As an outpatient myself, my volunteer work is also helping my personal goal of being able to express myself fluently.”
Ray said he now takes life day by day and would eventually like to return to part-time work. “For now I am happy driving and playing golf as I used to,” he said. “One of the things I have learnt during this experience is to only look forward and never look backwards. The patients that embrace a positive outlook on their future are the ones that have more successful outcomes. “I hope through my volunteer work I can lift the spirits of other patients and provide comfort and guidance through the reflection of my own journey.”
WHEN striving for a healthy balance of mind, body and soul it can be easy to forget your teeth, but oral health can have a significant impact on your overall well-being. According to research, poor oral health and untreated oral diseases can have a negative impact on quality of life and in many cases, the mouth mirrors the condition of the body as a whole. For example, because diabetes reduces the body’s resistance to infection, it is common for oral disease in the form of gingivitis to develop, but diabetes is only one example of a disease that will manifest in the mouth. Links have been found between gum disease and blood
conditions such as stroke and heart disease, plus it is understood that a large percentage of bodily diseases have oral manifestations. This means your dentist may be the first health care professional to identify a possible health problem, making regular dental exams all the more important to help maintain a happy, healthy body. Regular brushing, flossing and examinations from a dentist are just some of the ways you can help look after your oral health. If you haven’t been for a dental exam recently, now is the perfect time to book in and see your dentist. Health and wellbeing starts with oral care.
Healthy teeth, healthy body – have you had an oral exam recently?

Relax and breathe easy WE breathe up to 30,000 times a day, so it’s critical we do it right. If you are someone who always has tight neck and shoulder muscles, dysfunctional breathing may be the cause. When you aren’t using your diaphragm (the muscle surrounding your lungs) to breathe, you rely on your neck and shoulder muscles to lift your ribs and pump fresh air around the body. Breathing using your diaphragm is how our bodies were designed but things like sitting slouched at a desk, poor posture and stress can inhibit this. Knotted muscles and a tight band across the shoulders are typical in people
who breathe incorrectly. As well as muscle pain, headaches, digestive stress, sleep apnoea, asthma and “brain fog” can occur when there is poor air circulation. Noosa Chiropractic’s Dr Mimi and Dr Neil share their tips on how to use your diaphragm when breathing: Lie on your back with knees slightly bent. Place hands (palms down) on the lower part of your abdomen. As you breathe in, slowly counting to four, you want to feel your abdomen lift up as the lungs fill with air. Breathe out slowly, counting to five, you should feel

Yukti uses certified organic herbs which are sustainably sourced, vegetable capsules and they also blend their own organic tea, chai and spice blends. Wayne heads a fully trained team that includes Akshara Day who holds a Certificate IV in Ayurveda and is currently completing an Advanced Diploma in Ayurveda at Australian Institute of Holistic Medicine (AIHM); and Jasmyn Kneen, who manufactures the products, is trained in Ayurveda (Cert IV), massage and yoga. To celebrate the launch of Yukti Botanicals, clients are invited to enjoy a free herbal infused steam bath with every massage throughout May. Visit Yukti Botanicals at 59 Rene Street, Noosaville, or phone (07) 5447 1122 to find out more. 1133324-PB20-14
BELMONDOS Organic Market has welcomed the latest addition to the market, Yukti Botanicals. The launch comes as part of Belmondos’ holistic approach to health and well-being, having embarked on an organic journey, which focuses on diet and overall lifestyle. Yukti Botanicals (pronounced yoo k-tee) brings together a natural pharmacy, day spa and treatment centre offering an unrivalled mix of natural supplements, therapies and traditional Ayurvedic medicine to the market. Well-known Noosa Ayurvedic practitioner and naturopath Wayne Celeban B.Hlth.Sc. (Nat.) Dip. (Ayur. Med.) N.Z. is on hand at the centre providing Ayurvedic and naturopathic consults. Wayne said he enjoyed offering a holistic approach to healthcare where a client’s well-being and satisfaction were central to success. “Our aim is to empower our clients with a complete approach to creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” he said. “At the same time we are creating a resultorientated clinic with qualified, professional and approachable staff who run our welcoming retail space and are highly educated about the benefits of our high-quality products. We welcome people to come and get free advice from our team.” Wayne said he and the team are passionate about providing natural, evidence-based health care solutions for the maintenance of vibrant health and well-being. While the treatment centre has many popular and effective alternative therapies, they specialise in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Keeping in theme with Belmondos wholesaling service, Yukti Botanicals offer wholesale to practitioners, in addition to hosting educational talks and visiting specialists. Yukti provides an Australian first, a complete range of Australian made, organic, Ayurvedic formulas with 33 different formulas that are compounded on site.

A matter of balance ANXIETY, depression, mood swings, difficulties coping, brain fog and sugar cravings? Naturopath Yolanda Falivene says there are multiple reasons our bodies become stressed and anxious. “We’re all too familiar with stress from work pressure, family commitments and financial issues, but are you aware that your body also reacts in exactly the same way even if you’re excited about going on holidays?” Yolanda said. “The adrenals kick in and heightened anxiety can result. Other triggers include hormone imbalance, infections, nutritional deficiencies, gut problems, lack of sleep and pain.” Yolanda said a little known genetically inherited condition called Pyroluria caused the body to produce an excess of kryptopyrroles that bind certain nutrients and excrete them. “A profound deficiency results and most of the above symptoms appear,” she said. “It is very easily identified with a simple urine test.” The gut is also an important component to helping balance moods, with 90 per cent of serotonin, your ‘happy hormone’, produced in your gut. “Studies have linked gut imbalance to mood disorders so maintaining a healthy digestive tract is paramount to a healthy mind,” Yolanda said. “Also, certain bacteria in the gut can produce enzymes that affect estrogen metabolism.” Yolanda said symptoms rarely occured in isolation and it could become very confusing for people to know where to start treating themselves. “Many end up spending a fortune on various supplements, treating only part of the problem and not always the cause,” she said. At Noosaville Natural Health Centre, Yolanda uses modern diagnostic equipment including the 3D body scan and can arrange the urinary pyrrole test to determine possible causes and prioritise treatment.

By ANITA ANDERSON SOME great touchdowns were the order of the day in the Noosa Touch under-10 division last week. Pink Thunder and Sapphires played an entertaining match with Pink Thunder the eventual winners. Alla, Breanna and Bronte all played strongly. The Amigos were too strong for Tewantin with Ben, Broc and Ryan leading the way for their teams. In a close result Good Shepherd just managed to get the win over Sunshine this time around. Atticus, Kian and Charlie had mighty games. The under-12 division has games between Banana Splits and Panthers, STM and Sunshine Rippers, and Glen’s Guns and Tewantin - with Banana Splits, STM and Glen’s Guns earning the points this week. Team players of the day went to Emily, Parker, Monique, Lulu, Alexander, Stella, Jacey and Charlotte. Ever improving skill was on display in the under-14/16 girls division across the five games. Sunshine Rebels proved too strong for GSLC Gold with Giverney, Jaidyn and Lucy all playing strongly. In a battle for Year 8 supremacy, NDSHS (Green) just had the edge over NDSHS (Blue). NDSHS 9s (Blue) went down to St Andrew’s - putting in great efforts for their teams were Rana, Chloe and Sarah. In a nail-biter between SBST and GSLC Maroon a drawn game was the end result at the full time siren. Jessie, Abbey and Phoebe produced first rate performances. NDSHS 10s had the edge over NDSHS 9s (Green) with Bronte, Kalen and Tiana playing well. With the temperature starting to drop, the under-14/16 boys finished the afternoon of games. The Magic Touch went down fighting against The Illuminatis - Jack, Hayden and Tamatoa showed great skill. NDSHS 9s (Blue) narrowly won against NDSHS 7 and 8s (Blue). NDSHS 7 and 8s (Green) had a hard-fought win against Dodgers with Hayden, James S. and Dempsey giving mighty efforts. Good Shepherd came out on top in a close encounter against NDSHS 9s (Green) - Reuben, Chaance and Hayden were standouts in this game. Please remember to thank our referees, as without them our games just wouldn’t happen. If we have any parents or players from our senior competition that would like to help out with a whistle please let us know.

erty Noosa, Gowan Lea Timbers, Supa IGA Pomona, Dolphin Plastics, Mark Bain Constructions, Classic Noosa Concrete Services and Always Cool Air-conditioning will all be on hand to cheer on our teams. “It’s our way of giving a little bit back to them, because without these sponsors we simply wouldn’t be here,” Lexie said. Pirates plundered the Sharks nest By TRACI HOZIER NOOSA JUNIOR PIRATES UNDER 7 WHITE THE boys travelled to Shark territory in round eight and put in another superb defensive display this week. For the second week in a row our opposition could only cross the try line once. Every single player tackled their hearts out. Tries were scored by Cooper Drinnan, Lukas Byers and Sam Proctor, with Bailey Drinnan scoring a double. Rhy North, Cooper Ward, Jai Bruggy and Will Macrae set up our attack with barnstorming runs all day. Coach Troy appears to be more secure with a measured display of coaching today but cannot afford to relax. UNDER 7 YELLOW The weather was perfect and the fields primed for a gutsy game of footy. Our under-7 Yellow Pirates did it tough today as they met with the Sharks at Caloundra. Hayden was able to gather a loose ball and sail through the jaws of our opposition and score a magnificent try. We don’t know what Jaxon has been eating, but the mighty Pirate once again led the way with some inspirational tackling and hit ups. Cooper, Jacko, Riley and Beau never gave up as they continued up the field to get close to the try line. Brandon and Lachlan gave it their best as they also persisted tackling, and chased throughout the game. Our boys - who dug deep and with some great teamwork and a never-give-up attitude - played with big hearts. Well done to them and Tim. UNDER 8 YELLOW Beautiful weather greeted the players at the home ground of the Caloundra Sharks. With the team decimated by injuries once again, a mash up of some experienced under-7 boys with the usual suspects made for an exciting game. A free-flowing game with much open play, allowed the speed men to run rings around the bigger but less mobile Caloundra pack. Joe
Tolano aka 'lightning legs’ even ran so fast he tripped over himself with not a player in sight. Tries awarded to Rhy North, Lachlan Ward and Bailey Drinnan. Defensively Zahn, Lincoln and Zeke as always were solid with some high impact tackles low and hard. For outstanding and much improved defense Lachlan Ward was awarded man of the match. A big thank you to stand-in coach, strapper, technical consultant and water boy Glen Tolano and the under-7 boys who stepped up to help out the older boys. UNDER 9 BLUE Under-9 Blue had a tough day down at Caloundra against some stong competition. The boys’ defence was very good with some great tackling from Stoan Condon, Benny Graf, Joshy Palmer, Roy Crozier and Dylan Alchin. The boys were much improved in their attack with some great ball running from Declan, Cohyn North, Taj Egea, Jett Cannon and Cody Reid. All in all, a great solid game from all our team. Man-ofthe-match went to Benny Graf and encouragement award went to Cohyn North. Looking forward to next week’s Women in League round at home. UNDER 10 YELLOW This week we travelled down the coast to play against a very strong Caloundra team. With our side short from injury and illness we only had nine fit players this week. A big thanks to the players from the Noosa Pirates Blue team that helped us out. The opposition defence was very strong and physical, making scoring difficult. Jed Bullman worked hard at half back, Dylan was busy, Charlie Cook made some hard tackles, Riley Coster and Jackson Smith ran hard with the ball and tackled well. Charlie Bond made some ground running up the middle and both Ryans played well out on their wing. This week Jordan was named man-of-the-match. UNDER 11 BLUE A fantastic team effort in both attack and defence
ZEE WETSUITS
have positive attitudes on and off the field. Our MVP this week went to Kanga Dean. Well done on steely defence against players three times bigger than you and springy attack across the park. UNDER 12 GOLD Well the boys played a great game in the terrible heat to play out a 10-all draw against Maroochydore with only three reserves. I couldn’t have been any prouder with the boys’ efforts, which were made a bit harder due to the man with the whistle. Awesome effort from Ryan Mcleary to claim our best-on-ground with some stinging defence and good go forward in attack, also good efforts from Kaiden Collins, Lachlan Flett and an all-round pat on the back. Well done boys great effort and commitment all round, keep up the good training and in a couple more weeks with a full squad there’s no team we can’t beat.

saw a significant win for under-11 Blue v Beachmere Black on home turf. Highlights for the coach were the slick backline movements, fantastic offloads and tireless defence. Cooper was our deserved player-ofthe-match with a hat-trick of tries. UNDER 11 GOLD It was an early home game for under-11 Gold this week. The boys played well against Caboolture on a greasy track, seeing very little ball go to ground. Caboolture were right into the game from the very start, making plenty of early metres. Solid and at times flimsy defence managed to keep the Snakes from penetrating the Noosa try line all but once. The Noosa boys have been training to keep themselves in a line and keep playing to that structure. With time, this set structure should take place and the boys will be ready for any opposition. They are an awesome group of players who continue to communicate and

THE smell of liniment is in the air again, workplace tipping competitions are intensifying and the temperature is starting to drop. All that means is that the footy season has everyone excited - clubs, players, supporters and even the sponsors. And so it is with our Noosa Pirates, who will be hosting a big round of footy this Saturday 16 May, at the Noosa District Sports Complex. It’s the start of round four and will be the first home games for the club this season. Four games will be on hand from 1pm and the Noosa Pirates’ committee is taking advantage of what will be one of only four opportunities to celebrate with supporters and sponsors this season. Club secretary Lexie Mawn says the Pirates and Noosa/Gympie joint venture side, the Northern Outlaws are looking forward to finally playing in front of their home crowd. “We’re all excited about cheering on the boys and doing our part to celebrate Women in League next Saturday,” Lexie said. “There are so many amazing

NOOSA EAGLES SOCCER NOOSA under-6 White played against the Buderim Typhoons, defeating them 4-3. This was the team’s first win of the season. Coach Sam Owen has produced a great little team here. Adler Lenitschek, the pocket rocket of the team, is a dream defender, just getting in and cleaning up near the goal line. Micah Elvy and Kiri Todhunter’s goal-keeping made it difficult for the Buderim Typhoons to get ahead of us. New to the team, Summer-lille St John has proven to be a fast runner and made some worthy attempts at goal-scoring. Eli Robinson goes from strength and with help from Charlee Benton and Charlee Owen kept the ball up our end of the field for most of the game. A couple of crafty passes from Will Holmes helped our goal-scorers Eli and Charlee Owen. Noosa under-6 Gold played the Buderim Blizzards and it was a fantastic game. At half time it was 2-0 in our favour, then in the second half they fought back and scored three great goals, with us scoring one. So a fitting end at a three-all draw. Goal scorers were Eddie Smith 2 and Ben Boden. All the boys played so well. Player of the match was Eddie Smith and the coach's trophy went to Ben Boden. Playing an evenly matched Buderim Cubs, the under-7 Gold team unfortunately failed to score, going down 4-0 to the Cubs. Player of the match Xavier Attard put his body on the line and played his most exciting game this season. Noosa under-8 Black team played against Buderim Cobras with the result 3-2 to Buderim. This week under-8 Black had their first loss for the season going down 3-2 to Buderim Cobras. It was a close game all the way through and could have gone either way. Charlie Drew did an amazing job as goalie blocking over 10 attempts in the first half alone. Alaska Rosenkranz and Ethan Messenger showed some great attacking team work with a beautiful pass from Ethan allowing Alaska to kick one of his two goals. Jaimen Slavin held up well in defence constantly marking the play, while Jake McDonald, Joe Maskell and Keiran Dow all played well keeping their eye on the ball and never giving up. Great work boys. Under-10 Gold played Buderim Strikers at Good Shepherd Lutheran College, Noosaville. The score was 9-0. Noosa won. Goals scored by Hunter Baistow 4, Innocent Sibanda 3, Ryan Lawton and Bailey Atley. Player of week was Hunter Baistow.

Calmer seas send anglers offshore By JACK MANGROVE WITH the spectacular weather we have been having, the offshore brigade has been heading out in force. Sunshine Reef has been a hot spot for snapper, sweetlip, trout and tuna. Good quality pilchards, local squid and live baits fished hard to the bottom have seen some outstanding results. Out on Chardon’s, it has been all about the pelagics, spanish mackerel, yellowfin tuna, longtail tuna and Mack tuna which have all been on the chew. Floating pillies, livies, trolled hardbody lures, micro jigs and slugs are all also working well. Clear water is the key as the pelagics hate the dirty water. North reef has also been fishing well, with a good array of reef species including cobia and pearl perch. North Reef has been a haven for spanish mackerel with big numbers of good sized fish taken. When fishing for pelagics using good quality mono leader is a must, you will get better results than with wire. In the river, the dirty water is starting to subside with the bigger tides
being the pick of the spots. Fresh mullet strips, prawns, frogmouth pillies and pippies have all been working well. There have been some great flathead in the river again, the clean water on the incoming tide seems to be the trick. Brightly coloured soft plastics, paddle vibes and live bait have all been favoured by a hungry lizard. Remember your bag and size limits, for dusky flathead a minimum size of 40cm and a maximum size of 75cm with a bag limit of five. On the beach, the large winter bream are starting to show up. With the amazing swells we have had over the last couple of weeks, beach anglers have had to stick to the river but now that things have calmed down a little, anglers are hitting the beaches in droves. On the North Shore we should see some good sized tailor as well as squire and jewies. Large pillies, fresh mullet and salted bonito are all excellent baits and should produce some great fish. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.
David Forbes with a 86cm flathead. helping to clear the river. The lower reaches of the river are still where you should concentrate your efforts. Good sized whiting are around the Frying Pan and Dog Beach. There have been a few anglers who have been able to get their hands on some good blood worms, these are a fantastic bait for whiting with some anglers hitting their bag limit while using them. Bream have been in good numbers with Woods Bay and the river mouth

There will be four perpetual trophies on offer: two donated by Noosa Heads SLSC, one by Olympic legend John Konrads and one donated by the Noosa Masters
The Masters Swim Club annual swimming carnival is on this Saturday. Swim Club in honour of late president Pat Mooney. talk JULIAN PITTS
At half time at the Palmwoods game last weekend, the competition was tight. While one side was a premiership candidate and the other winless for season 2015, it certainly didn’t show. Playing for the Mark Laing/Shane Hunt Cup, were both highly respected former captains of Nambour and Noosa respectively. The first half was a scrappy almost uninteresting affair. Whilst defender and dual Brisbane Lions premiership player Robbie Copeland’s first quarter was a pleasure to watch and the usual suspects
McKittrick, Hill and Isles were racking up touches, the lack of intensity from the Tigers was the talking point amongst locals. In saying that, Nambour were happy to make the game into a scrap and their pressure early on was particularly evident. Indeed, another highlight of the first half, although for all the wrong reasons, was the stretchering off of Cain Tickner, (Noosa’s key forward who had already kicked three goals) due to concussion from a head knock. The incident did however change the state of the game as young Seb Rogers was moved to full forward in what James Gellie must be calling a ‘masterstroke’. Rogers who was awarded the Rococos mark and goal
of the week was a leading and high marking target and began attacking the footy with far more vigour than the first half. Andrew Stewart at centre half forward never stopped presenting the entire day and was rewarded with a season high four goals as was Rogers. Young midfielder Jesse Malthouse continues his impressive form after a strong pre-season and seems to be continually running out games better and better. As mentioned earlier Nick Hill again dominated in the middle with his strength and weight of possessions, whilst Tommy Keehan was also a solid contributor for the Tigers. Copeland was not as dominant in the final three quarters, but has to be in the
best, whilst mention must be made of Big Zac McDonald, who again rucked tirelessly and continues to gain confidence from each senior appearance. Overall a good finish by the Noosa boys after a very lack luster start and a very enjoyable viewing day at Palmwoods last weekend. There was plenty of depth flowing through the ressies, who again were super impressive. Names like Winter, Hughson, Wallace, Murray, Riley and O’Dwyer are all putting their hands up once again for senior selection, so all looks good for an impressive showing against Aspley in Brisbane this Saturday. Go tigers! Pittsy

Our Under 18 girls’ team were down in numbers this week and lost to Mountain Creek in a one-sided game. The Under 15 girls had a closer game, but also went down to Mountain Creek, but showed glimpses of what they can produce in effort and determination.

The Under 15 boys went to 4 wins, 1 loss with a strong victory over neighbours Gympie 11-15-81 to 1.0-6. Hopefully a bit of goal kicking practice this week might lose some of the 15 behinds. Noosa Blue Under 13’s had a loss against Caloundra 11-15-81 to 2.0-12 and put up a good effort against a very well drilled opposition. Noosa Red 13 had a bye, so they got to enjoy Mother’s Day at home, while the Noosa Under 11 team kicked straight to get a good win against Nambour/
Glasshouse 23-11-149 to 1-5-11. This week sees the 15 and 17 boys play away, but the rest of our teams are at home. Anyone wishing to see some quality junior footy, get on down to Weyba Road and cheer them on! Games start at 9am. Don’t forget there is also the Under 6 competition at 4.30pm Friday with three Noosa teams and one from Pomona playing. Richard Murrihy

TEWANTIN NOOSA BOWLS WE are showcasing our club with an ‘extravaganza’ of bowls at Tewantin-Noosa Bowls Club from 3 to 18 May, at the same time living up to our reputation as being both capable and ‘friendly’ club due to the efforts of our many volunteers. Queensland State/District Sides competed from 3 to 6 May, where 40 teams from all over Queensland participated over the four days. It was a great event with some excellent bowls played. The Gold Coast teams featured in all the finals, but the Sunshine Coast teams flew the flag, with the women finishing third. Our men also finished third in Division 1 and second in Division 5. We are currently co-hosting heats and all the finals of the Queensland State Championships, and over the past three days two results have already been decided. The men’s singles winner in consecutive years was Canadian Ryan Bester (Broadbeach) defeating clubmate Sean Ingham in a nail-biter, 25/23. The women’s fours winners were team Clarke (Helensvale) over Team Waitai (Broadbeach). We are doing our best to fit in some social bowls around state bowls and appreciate the patience of our members. ‘Friendly Friday’ (on Thursday): winners were Connie Johnston, Val Reinicke and Peter Larke. Runners-up were our newest members Sharon Briggs, Keith Musgrave and Jenny Bowie. The jackpot of

NOOSA SOFTBALL YOU would not know Caboolture was under water last week as the sun shone brightly on the re-done diamonds this weekend. The under-15s led from the front with a sevenrun first dig to the Demons' 0. The game went into an even mode after this and ended up 8-3 Noosa’s way. Charles had a good game at catcher and provided four combined outs with Riley at short stop including a set split play (the
Johnson). Riley also chimed in with another home run, Shinai also whacked a left-handed, two bagger. Noosa scored seven more runs in the last but it reverted back. Shinae and Dylan pitched well throughout the game. The 17 Blacks had a 8-7 win while the 17 Whites had a 7-8 loss. Jarred took six catches in centre field and converted two of those to double plays, while Shinai pitched well but had a couple off radar and was supported by
Lewis at catcher who had a good game. Josh Sheehan hit a two bagger and a home run in the Blacks’ victory. The men’s team had a loss and it did not look pretty with a lot of fielding errors. They put a very young team out on the field for experience, as they were playing for grading. It was a good effort by the team.

IT WAS indeed a very busy weekend for some of our surf club people. For the Noosa Surf Club it started with a delegation attending the annual Salvation Army Red Shield Fund Raising Breakfast held at the Noosa Convention Center on Friday morning. This is a function that Noosa people look forward to attending as it is a great cause and the club always gives its total support. Following this, the Noosa Surf Club general manager Anton Mogg played host to a thank you luncheon for representatives of the Tewantin Noosa RSL Sub-branch, Noosa Shire Council and sponsors, for making the centenary commemoration Anzac Day dawn service, held on Noosa’s Main Beach, a reality. On Saturday morning the Noosa Seahorse Nippers were again active. The morning got off to a great start when a group of ladies, some of them being mums, performed a dance routine in front of the Noosa club as a fund-raiser. The group affectionately known as the Flash Mob performed before a crowd that had gathered on the lawn area to watch the Ultraman. It was a fun event which was well received and a substantial amount was raised. This will go toward supporting Noosa Seahorse program. The 45 helpers and 35 children who were in attendance were indeed blessed with surf and weather conditions that can only be described as perfect. Now in its third year, the Noosa Seahorse Nippers is one of the most outstanding success stories in the club’s 87 year history.
NOOSA’S BEST SPORTS COVERAGE
The Noosa Seahorse Nippers were on Noosa Main Beach on Saturday, in what has been described as a successful day on the beach. Picture: SUPPLIED Apart from Noosa members, Marcoola, Sunshine Beach, Mooloolaba and Peregian members were also in attendance. A Noosa club organiser Nikki Mawby said: “It is all going well and next weekend there is a possibility that Point Lookout representatives
will be in attendance. They are keen to see how things are done.” With a small, very safe one-metre wave running on to Noosa Beach, it was interesting to note the number of Seahorse Nippers, who, having been with the group since day one, are now starting to handle their small
craft with confidence. Their laughter and smiles definitely makes it all well worthwhile. At the completion of the morning's activities a team leader Donald McKill called out to one and all, “Grab a buddy,” and team leaders, lifesavers, Seahorse Nippers and mums and dads did just that. Then with arms around shoul-
ders they gave a very loud and happy chant of Seahorse, Seahorse! A perfect end to a perfect day. The traditional end of the season barbecue for Noosa was this season held at the Peregian club. Happy to relate it was an outstanding success. With Noosa and Peregian now working in conjunction, holding the function at Peregian was the thing to do. In the words of a Peregian member of long standing: “This is a good thing; the atmosphere here tonight is really great, all happy and relaxed.” Patrols at both clubs were at full strength making the workload easier to handle. Most important of all; no lives lost between the flags while lifesavers of both beaches on patrol. Noosa’s trip to Broadbeach on the Gold Coast for the IRB carnival was for all a great learning curve. Noosa was well represented with the under23s, opens and masters teams competing in the men's division and the under-23s and opens teams competing in the female. For Noosa, the open ladies made the final in their division and when you take into consideration that the girls were aged from 17 to 20, it was a good result. Competing in big surf, the experience was invaluable. Also, many thanks go to the lifesavers who worked as water safety officers for the Ultraman Australia Endurance Events.
