AN ABOVE-INFLATION rate hike is almost certain for local landowners in July, with the council refusing to rule out the hip-pocket sting. Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Peter Blundell has promised to keep rates fair but said an increase was inevitable due to the rising costs of infrastucture, energy, and a freeze on the council’s government funding. “It would be highly unlikely that there isn’t a rate increase given the economic climate we are in,“ Cr Blundell said. Questioned on what residents can expect, Cr Blundell declined to commit to a rate capped at inflation, saying a final figure is still being worked through as the council finalises its budget and rates schedule this month. Last year Cr Blundell delivered a 5 per cent rate increase. “We are looking at a severe financial constraint, it’s not going to be an easy budget to formulate,“ he said. As the council grapples with many of the same debt and revenue issues of State Governments and the Commonwealth, Cr Blundell said a freeze on the indexation of Financial Assistance Grants had placed an enormous strain on the books. Passion of plonk Casey’s tips

By SONJA KOREMANS THEY may be too young to drink wine but these teens have a passion for plonk and are doing their part of ensure the region’s viticulture industry is in good hands. The Stanthorpe High students have jumped into winemaking boots and all, learning how to make the precious liquid at the Queensland College of Wine Tourism (QCWT). A day in wine class can take the grade 11 and 12 students from the paddock to the chemistry lab where they taught all the technical and practical elements of grape production, bottling, cellaring and sales. No, they can’t taste, sip or even swirl and spit the results of their hard work but teacher Warren Franklin says the budding sommeliers know how to make wine the public loves.

“We have 28 students at the moment studying for their wine certificate as part of the senior curriculum and they are extremely dedicated, said Mr Franklin, the high school’s head of agriculture. Under the tutelage of leading winemaker Peter Orr, the students have lessons at the QCWT’s Banca Ridge Winery, where their wine in including varietals such as Viogner and Tempranillio is sold at cellar door. “The kids really enjoy the practical nature of the subject, that they can see what they have produced in the vineyard being taken right through the whole process to being sold to the public.” Mr Franklin said being unable to taste test may even make the students more skilled at picking a top drop than professional quaffers.

“They are banned from tasting so the students work very hard on their sensory assessment and understanding the chemistry behind wine production.“ The two-year training is part of Qeensland’s Gateway to Industry program which aims to help students make a successful transition from school into employment in the food, wine and tourism industries. Students who complete the two-year course leave with Certificate 2 in Wine Industry Operations. QCWT educator Peter Orr said his Stanthorpe High underlings were producing top caliber wines. Some of the wines have made the cut for the Royal Queensland Wine Show in July where they will be tested by masters winemakers from across Australia, Mr Orr said.

Drug drive blitz

Waste belt

SEVENTEEN people have been charged in a highway drug blitz last week. Stanthorpe region police and the Brisbane Road Side Drug Testing Unit conducted drug tests along the New England Highway at Wallangarra and Applethorpe. Seven drivers allegedly tested positive to the drug tests while 10 were charged with a range of drug related offences. Marijuana and methamphetamine were seized in the operation.

WORK began this week on the construction of a new waste transfer station to service Granite Belt residents. The Northern Granite Belt Waste Transfer Station is part of the Southern Downs and Regional Council’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan 2014-2024. The site of the waste transfer station, Taggart Road, The Summit, was chosen after an extensive search for suitable areas within the northern Granite Belt region. Accessibility of the site as well as its size were two of the many factors that contributed to the decision.

What’s in it for us? THE Federal Budget delivered some broad benefits for Southern Downs residents but there were also a few promising government commitments in the fine print for locals. There were the obvious wins for regional communities including the small business tax breaks for purchases up to $20,000, extra funds for childcare, and the dumping of the proposed changes to pension indexation. But the budget documents also outline some location specific funding including greater spending on road blackspots, particularly in and around Warwick, and the potential for funds to flow to major dam projects. That may result in more money

have a flow-on effect on job creation,” Mr Scott said. “There was also a $3 million commitment for the new heavy vehicle project at Cunninghams Gap and $750,000 for some blackspots in Warwick including Dragon, Grafton and Guy streets and some areas of Yangan to commence from July this year.” Local Member for Southern Downs Lawrence Springborg said the budget included a commitment to water infrastructure that might benefit the Southern Downs. “We have heard over the last few weeks and again in the budget last night that there is going to be a significant Northern Dams allocation of funds for water infrastructure,” Mr Springborg said. “Whether that covers off for the

Emu Swamp Dam we are not sure yet, but it is a positive for the funding around it to take shape.” Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Peter Blundell said the greatest areas of interest for the Southern Downs would be the lowering of the company tax rate for businesses and the ability to write off business related purchases for equipment worth up to $20,000. “This is designed to stimulate small business activity, with the Treasurer saying emphatically, 'now is the time to get out and have a go',” Mr Blundell said. “Primary producers will also be able to deduct spending on fencing, water infrastructure and fodder storage immediately. Let’s hope producers have enough resources to be able to take advantage of this measure.”

being provided for the Emu Swamp Dam in Stanthorpe, an upgrade to the Eight Mile Intersection in Warwick, and the alignment of the Accommodation Creek section of the New England Highway. However, Southern Downs MPs pointed out that the Eight Mile intersection would require a commitment from State Labor before it could move beyond the design stage, where it sits currently with the Department of Main Roads. Federal LNP Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott said the Southern Downs would see a doubling of its road grant money as of July under the new budget. “That financial assistance for roads was confirmed in the budget and that will not only create transport infrastructure for the region but

Brace for looming rate rise subject to discussion. “But there is a reality to be faced that either rates go up or services go down.” The SDRC is crunching the numbers on all service and program costings, with everything from garbage disposal to the Warwick Saleyards under review. The prospect of adding a waste disposal levy to residents’ rates bill was raised at the SDRC’s recent monthly meeting

“as an innovative and transparent way to involve the community of management in waste”. But it is just one of many potential changes to community provisions residents can expect this year, with Cr Blundell saying “absolutely everything is under review”. Letters

Casey’s Email tipsyour letter to: newsdesk@freetimes.com.au

Fair cop ON reading the letter by Ian McLeod (Is This Treason?, Southern Free Times, 7 May), at first I thought that it had to be tongue in cheek. However, it soon became obvious that this was the ranting of someone who is totally removed from the real world. As for his assertion that any educated person should know that God Save the Queen is the National Anthem and always will be, where did he receive his education? Advance Australia Fair has been the official national anthem for about 30 years, as far as I am aware. If he had his way, we would revert back to the Menzies era of grovelling to all things British rather than having pride in our own country. As for the British national anthem, God Save the Queen is a song of subservience with no words praising the country such as Land of Hope and Glory. Jay Nauss, Glen Aplin.

Historic offence MR McLeod, please check your facts before making your accusations of “treason” on Anzac Day. Advance Australia Fair was sung as a patriotic song as early as 1878. It replaced God Save the Queen as the official anthem on 19 April 1984. This was following a plebiscite held to choose our national anthem in 1977 which was finally passed in 1984. You are just 31 years late making your “treason” accusation. M. Wagner, Tannymorel.

Dark on Greens MODERN industrial society commenced with the use of coal and oil to power factories, trains, ships and agriculture and to generate electricity. With abundant energy, prosperity increased and people could save enough to support leisure, education, culture and environmental concerns. But the dark greens have a dream to dismantle all this, and return society to the hunter/gatherer era.

And a child is born!! A PRINCESS far away over the sea but adored by her family, and so many who see a continuance of what to this writer, are Royals that are not for turning away from their duties to the Commonwealth of Nations and so to all of us. And this world continues to horrify those of us who were born when Australia was a far different place, the little princess will, with her big brother beside her, carry on where her forebears have forged a living example. With Australians now polling 63 per cent to retain the monarchy, the 37 percenters will hopefully look elsewhere to amuse themselves! A princess named so to honour her family is something to behold, and will surely set a precedent amongst the giddy set! Welcome little Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, congratulations to her loving parents! Melba Morris, Allora.

Concern for the future TO the people who vote on the Southern Downs, what if politicians and councillors were to give two to three hours per month to secondary schools and community centres to update the information required, answer

questions, accept innovative changes and ideas so we are all ‘in the know’ and to vote accordingly and responsibly. That is, make our vote count. There is chaos closing in on each election, no one is very happy with broken promises or the $800 million plus a year we spend on wages for retired politicians. Not many have a clear up-to-date clarity on accountability, not much logic or sense in CSG or old dirty energy in a high-tech world. It’s a joke that we spend $30 million a day on obesity and related diseases. It’s a crime that we sell assets and quietly dump on the Barrier Reef. It’s unforgivable to have so many homeless when house prices have gone up five times since 2002. What hope or future do we unthinkingly, greedy adults give our next generation? I’m ashamed to be Australian for the first time in my 60 years. Donna Nevin, Killarney.

Green thumbs up By SONJA KOREMANS

IN celebration of National Volunteer Week this week (11-17 May), Cancer Council Queensland would like to extend a special thanks to our volunteers and fundraisers for their immeasurable contribution to our work. More than 40,000 supporters across the state make a difference to locals impacted by cancer every year. In South West Queensland, we are fortunate to benefit from the support of 321 registered volunteers who are dedicated to our vision for a cancer free future, in addition to thousands of community members who give of their time for events and other projects. We also have 12 volunteer branches in the local region, run by passionate members who champion our efforts to raise awareness and vital funds. CCQ was, in fact, founded by volunteers more than 50 years ago in 1961, at a time when the number of new cancer cases was rapidly increasing, but little was known about how to treat the disease. We simply could not do without the spirit, determination, and enthusiasm of volunteers. They are the heart of our work. Cancer today, more than ever, is a community problem. Every year around 25,000 Queenslanders hear the news that they have cancer. Combined with improving cancer survival rates, more people are living every day with cancer. We are committed to providing all Queenslanders with the best possible prospects of preventing, detecting, effectively treating and surviving a cancer diagnosis. Our heartfelt thanks goes to the terrific volunteers in South West Queensland - your work helps to improve cancer control and reduce the impact of cancer on our community. Together we will beat cancer. Prof Jeff Dunn AO, CEO, Cancer Council Queensland.

Happy to give ‘GIVE happy, live happy’ is the theme of National Volunteer Week 2015 - a celebration of volunteerism and an opportunity to highlight the role of millions of Australians who volunteer every year. Queenslanders interested in volunteering for CCQ can visit the ‘Support us’ section at www.cancerqld.org.au . Cancer Council Queensland is an independent, community-based charity. The achievements of Cancer Council Queensland are made possible by the generosity of Queenslanders. For more information about Cancer Council Queensland visit www.cancerqld.org.au or phone the Cancer Council on 13 11 20.

AVID green thumbs come in all sizes. Such is the conclusion after an overwhelming response from kids as young as five who applied for Landcare grants to spruce up their school and community gardens this year. More than 1700 children, many from Queensland, put their hands up for funding in the first round of junior gardener grants which are being rolled out again in July. People under 17 can apply for one of 25 grants worth $1000, with the Yates Junior Landcare Creative Gardening Grants open to schools and youth groups across Australia? Yates spokesperson Angie Thomas said the grants aimed to encourage young people to become innovative with nature and create beautiful gardens in any environment, no matter how tiny or challenging the space. “It gives kids an opportunity to learn that they can grow visually pleasing gardens in the smallest places, and also understand that gardening is about more than just planting a few seeds,” Ms Thomas said. Vertical gardens, bean teepees and muppet flower beds were among the experimental results from the last round of grants, Ms Thomas said. Landcare Australia CEO Tessa Jakszewicz said the engagement of young people by Landcare is aimed to encourage future generations protect Australia’s land and water resources. “From our first round of grants, we also received a number of reports about improved outcomes for the children themselves, including increasing confidence, self-esteem and a sense of connection with the community,” Ms Jakszewicz said. Applications for the grants close on 3 July. Details can be found at: www.juniorlandcare. com.au

ON Tuesday last week I was watching the early news and my power went off, so I could not check with Ergon. Then I noticed a car had pulled up in front of my place and a lady was on the mobile phone. I thought she may be in trouble so I went to see. She was a council worker on her way home with a young child in the car after a hard day cleaning up storm and wind damage. She had noticed the power lines were very low across the road, she rang Ergon, the police and council for assistance. I said for her to go home but she said she would stay until the services arrived in case they wanted more directions. The services came and rectified the fault, the police stopped trucks coming and a bus came from the other direction but we managed to stop him and he took another route, he would not be able to go under the line. Because of her quick thinking and caring no accidents happened. The council should be so pleased to have such a valuable employee who used her common sense avoiding a dangerous situation. The lady's name is Emily Coy. Many thanks to her from Glenis at Freestone. Glenis Lathem, Freestone.

In an unguarded moment Maurice Strong, a leader of the international green movement, said: “Isn’t the only hope for the planet that the industrialised civilisations collapse? Isn’t it our responsibility to bring that about?” Greens have thus gleefully spread the global warming scare to justify a massive political war on hydrocarbon fuels. Timothy Wirth, ex-president of the UN Foundation, spilt the beans: “We’ve got to ride this global warming issue. "Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing in terms of economic and environmental policy”. To mask their real aim of de-energising modern industry, they continually promote “alternative energy”. The only alternatives to coal, oil and gas for stable, reliable and economical grid power are nuclear energy and, in favourable locations, hydro or geothermal. Nuclear power could be one of our cheapest and safest energy sources. However Greens have opposed and denigrated it for decades, and erected such bureaucratic and financial hurdles that it is seldom considered in most pampered Western societies. They are in favour of hydro, providing it does not disturb one fish or frog on their favourite river, but they continually spruik the benefits of wind and solar power. Wind/solar can be useful in some mobile or remote locations, and for some people with deep pockets who wish to become independent of the grid. But being totally unable to supply 24/7 grid power, they need reliable backup (or massive batteries) for about 75 per cent of their rated capacity. Once we subtract the energy and resources needed to build and maintain the towers/panels, plus the roads and transmission lines, plus backup/batteries and then run it all intermittently, the whole-of-life net-contribution of wind/solar to energy supply or emission reduction is negligible or negative. Another dark green leader, Amory Lovins of the Rocky mountains Institute, said: “It would be little short of disastrous for us to discover a source of clean, cheap, abundant energy, because of what we might do with it”. Green energy policy promotes this dictum by supporting “Nothing that Works”. Viv Forbes, Rosewood.

Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service mobile women’s health nurse Kath Anning will conduct clinics in Warwick, Killarney and Stanthorpe, while fellow nurse Barbara Milne will see patients in Goondiwindi. The service is confidential and is available to all women. Ms Anning said it was a good opportunity for women to stop putting off a pap smear. “A pap smear every two years can prevent the most common form of cervical cancer in up to 90 per cent of cases and is the best protection against cervical cancer,” Ms Anning said. “All women should start having pap smears between the ages of 18 and 20 years.” The nurses will also provide a range of other services including breast awareness and sexual health testing as well as advice for issues such as continence, menopause, contraception and general well-being. Appointments are necessary. For more information or to book, phone the outpatients department. Stanthorpe Hospital on Tuesday 9 June from 9am to 3pm. Ph: (07) 4681 5260. A new centre in Warwick will be a modern therapy centre, which will ensure BUSHkids is better able to support families and the community. Picture: ROSLYN BUDD

Technology for kids in the bush THE new BUSHkids centre in Warwick is coming together - with a little help from its friends. The centre will open at 191 Wood Street in September and this week received a boost with the two laptops being donated by the Roulston Builders and Ian Mace photography as a result of Friends of BUSHkids - Warwick's fundraising efforts. BUSHkids is a not-for-profit organisation providing primary health care in rural, remote and regional communities, building capacity in local communities to identify and respond to

children who are at risk of poor health, educational and social outcomes. It provides early allied health intervention for children and families who otherwise may have been unable to access services. The current building from which BUSHkids Warwick operates is small and not designed for its purpose. This limits the range of interventions and supports that can be provided for families and children from Warwick and the surrounding communities. These limitations include:

· Limitations to size and num-

ber of group programs provided. Lack of facility for health promotion and education programs. Severely limited ability to engage children in physical activity. Unable to host other services, providers or allied health students. The new centre will be a modern therapy centre which will ensure BUSHkids is better able to support families and the community.

Big market for mums

Casey’s tips

MOTHER’S Day on the Southern Downs had people out, spoiling their mums on the weekend. Whether it be taking in some cool jazz and warm fires at Heritage Winery or out at the Ubermarkets picking up last-minute gifts and enjoying a relaxed day, mum was definitely the word. And out and about enjoying the day with his camera in hand to capture the moment was Southern Free Times photographer TERRY WEST.

Bouquets speak volumes EMBRACE the beautiful, sweet-smelling gardenia, but beware the carnation! If there had been TAFE colleges in the Victorian era, the language of flowers would have been a LOTE course. At a time when the spoken and written word was used more sparingly, and perhaps a little more wisely (no delete buttons then) there was a bloom for every emotion, virtue and character flaw. Used metaphorically in poetry, and in letters, flowers were also chosen with great purpose for posies and bouquets, to convey messages of undying love, joy, wisdom, passion ... innocence. And, while you may not be super superstitious about life in general, when it comes to choosing the flowers that could write the script for the rest of your married life ... are you really happy to leave it all to chance? Well, yes. Of course the answer is ‘yes’ - if you have a particular flower you love, a bloom that perfectly matches your eyes, or the bridesmaid’s dresses; perhaps you’ve always dreamed of re-creating the bridal bouquet your nanna carried on her wedding day. But, if you’re looking for a lovely way to bring some added symbolism to your wedding, why not embrace a fascinating tradition and hark back to the language of flowers. Orchids are one of the most popular and available blooms for bridal bouquets and with the symbolic meaning of ‘love and beauty’ are right on message. Other flowers that symbolise love include the lilac, rose and tulip. Carnations are tricky. While some lists have the red carnation symbolising ‘love’, others attribute the meaning as ‘Alas for my poor heart’. No joy either in a striped carnation which symbolises ‘refusal’! Honeysuckle is also a little ambiguous meaning ‘bonds of love’. Check out our guide to the meaning of some

Red roses and white lilies are symbolic of a pure and passionate love.107244

of the most popular wedding flowers - including some to be wary of, lest they send the wrong message! Calla Lily - Magnificent Beauty. Camellia - Gratitude. Clematis - Love Vine. Gypsophilia - Innocence, Pure of Heart. Fern - Sincerity. Freesia - Trust. Gardenia - Purity, Joy. Iris - Wisdom. Ivy - Fidelity/Marriage. Lavender - Devotion. Lily-of-the-valley - True Happiness. Jasmine - Amiability.

Orange Blossom - Purity. Orchid - Love/Rare Beauty. Rose - Love Roses - Red and White combined - Unity. Sweet Pea - Lasting Pleasure. Tuberrose - Dangerous Pleasure. Tulip - Perfect Lover. Violet - Modesty. Water Lily - Purity of Heart. Christmas Rose - Scandal. Larkspur - Infidelity. Marigold - Grief. Narcissus - Egotism. Rhododendron - Danger. White Poppy - Sleep. Yellow Rose - Jealousy.

Gold band of wedded future bliss GONE are the days when a wedding band was a simple round piece of metal that fit your beloved’s finger for eternal happiness. These days there’s the option to head down to a jewellery business in a shopping centre or a department store (because we all enjoy a little Breakfast at Tiffany’s) and spend hours finding something just right or you can spend time designing a unique ring or pairs of rings for the two of you. The sky’s the limit and so is the imagination. What happens if you find the perfect ring but it has the wrong colour stone... or it’s gold but you wanted silver... or it doesn’t have enough bling... or it only comes in one size? There are plenty of places that customise rings to suit as a pair, to match up and work around an engagement ring or to build from scratch. Choose the metal - sterling silver, white gold, yellow gold, platinum, rose gold or palladium. Find a gemstone that matches your birthday or a particular date - rubies, diamonds and emeralds are just some of the many stones on offer. Choose whether you want one big stone, a central stone with smaller stones around it or a lot of small stones. When you know what you want and can customise it to a budget that suits you, at the end of the day this is a symbol of your love and affection for the rest of your happy life together. Make it count.

Drought funding flows By SONJA KOREMANS LOCAL drought-striken farmers will soon be able share in a multimillion dollar relief package. More than 70 per cent of Queensland is drought declared from the Southern Downs to Mt Isa in the north west and Coolangatta in the south east. The Federal Government this week announced a $333 million package that includes measures to boost regional economies, along with $250 million to continue concessional loans. The Southern Downs was declared a drought-affected area in March last year. Its inclusion means local producers are eligible to access support from the package. Federal LNP Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott said the funding was critical to create jobs and ensure drought-affected communities remained viable. It would include $35 million on employment projects for people whose work opportunities have been adversely affected by drought. “Twenty local government areas from Queensland and central and northern New South Wales will benefit from up to $1.5 million each over three years for infrastructure and employment projects,” Mr Scott said. “Funding will be made avail-

Mr Scott said more drought relief measures would also be announced in the Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper. For information on the package, visit www.agriculture.gov.au/ drought.

THE Bureau of Meteorology forecasts that May to July is likely to be wetter than normal over most of Australia, excluding Tasmania, southern Victoria, the Top End and Cape York. Across the northern tropics, median rainfall is usually very low from May to July. The major climate influences for the season ahead are warmer than normal sea surface temperatures in the Indian Ocean and surrounding much of the Australian coastline. In the tropical Pacific, the bureau’s climate model suggests El Nino is likely to develop over the coming one to two months. For the Southern Downs, there is about a 75 per cent chance of 50mm to 100mm over the forecast period. Stanthorpe has recorded 59.5mm of rain so far this month, with 51mm and 61mm recorded at the two weather stations in Warwick - with most of that total being dumped in a single day, on 2 May.

sharing their family’s rollercoaster ride with mental health issues will help others. The couple will speak at a free mental health workshop in Tenterfield next month as part of the Australian Government’s drought assistance package. Mr Anderson, who ran a successful farming business for 25 years, left the land after economic factors and family illness, including chronic depression, forced the couple to build a new life. “We experienced all the ups and downs of droughts and floods, while fluctuating markets made life on the land a constant juggle,” Mr Anderson said. “And three years ago, Julie and I made the tough decision to sell up the family property

and move to Tamworth.” Drought is just one of many factors that can put people on the land at risk of depression, but the illness often has no obvious triggers, Mr Andreson said. Both he and Julie have found new jobs and happiness in the city, and want to share their learnings with others facing similar challenges. The Building Resilience workshop is open to anyone to attend. It will feature guest speakers and short life skill workshops. It is on from 9.45am - 3pm on 12 June at the Best Western Motel, Tenterfield. Morning tea and lunch are provided. RSVP by 10 June to lucyf@ acsdarm.org.au or call 0407 005 100.

ONE stressful event can be all it takes to trigger severe depression. Illness, financial hardship or a relationship breakdown can have a snowball effect and rob anyone of a healthy outlook on life, regardless of their lifestyle, age, marital status or background. But the odds of experiencing depression are much higher for those living in rural communities. Isolation, drought, and difficulty accessing mental health services are some of the challenges faced by regional families. Woolshed art is a pleasure WITH the echo of bleating sheep and the smell of freshly cut wool in mind, wandering into the Bendee woolshed and seeing the vibrant colours, patterns and textures of a vast and varied exhibition of artwork is an experience not to be missed. The Traprock Group will host its ninth Art in the Woolshed event on Sunday 7 June in the Bendee Woolshed, west of Stanthorpe. The beautiful 75-year-old woolshed is located 20 minutes west on the Springdale Road and will play host to art, music, mulled wine, good food and conversation on the day. The first Art in the Woolshed was held in 1997 as an initiative to provide members and invited guest artists and artisans, with a venue to show their creative work in a bush setting. A shearing shed proved an unusual and intriguing venue to display a range of original and handcrafted work offering a direct physical link to the country for visitors from other backgrounds. Traprock members are committed to putting on an exhibition of innovative and quality artwork so that visitors gain an immediate impression on entering the shed that this is something ‘out of the ordinary’. This year the exhibition will be extended beyond the shed,

with many of the invited artisans displaying their work at individual stalls within a marquee. This will give visitors more to space to view the range of work and the opportunity to purchase directly from the artisan. As well as an extensive art display there is a stunning range of crafts - woven, knitted, felted wool creations - as well as gold and silver jewellery, pottery, timber, silk scarves, lead lighting, sewing, leather and beadwork and more. This year Coolmunda Olives has been invited to display its organic products. Entry to the exhibition is by gold coin donation and a raffle

will be held in support of Angel Flight. Visitors to the exhibition need to remember that there is no internet connection onsite so only cash or credit cards can be used on the day. Delicious home baked treats, together with tea and coffee, will be available all day. The Stanthorpe Rotary club will provide a barbecue lunch and wine and beer is available for purchase from the bar. Music will be by Penny Davies and Roger Ilott will ensure a delightful ambience during the day. For information visit www. artinthewoolshed.com.au, Facebook, or phone (07) 4681 2057.

★★★★★★★★ ★★★★★★★★ ARIES—March 21-April 20 Delays, rearranged plans and unexpected guests are part of the present week - and you may be ready for a holiday. In love, recent uncertainties clear up and you and a mate achieve deeper understandings. TAURUS—April 21-May 22 You begin to grow curious about new places and new personalities. There is an irresistable urge to be independent. A lucky streak lasts through the weekend. Communication is a problem on the weekend. GEMINI—May 23-June 21 A loved one may seem a little remote. What is important is that he/she knows you care. Outdoor recreation is favoured all week, but be careful in tackling outdoor repairs. CANCER—June 22-July 22 This is a great week for reviewing recent events and examining current priorities. A remark you overhear or an incident you witness, could help you make a key decision. Be more generous in sharing the limelight. LEO—July 23-August 22 Finance is accented through the week. A budget review, a choice investment opportunity and a chance to sell ideas are all indicated. An overdue announcement or surprise newsletter may arrive by the weekend. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 Your partner’s possessive streak surfaces. You could feel your style is being cramped. A friend surprises you with far out ideas - and they could help you solve a major problem. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 Tempers may heat up in the work environment and for a change, you may have to bend a little. Financial projects started now should have happy results. You may find neighbours paying spontanous calls. SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 The week is highlighted by a breakthrough in a communication problem. Perhaps you can get in touch with that disappearing person? A surprise guest could tire you on the weekend - perhaps with laughter. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 It’s uncanny how easily you put your foot in your mouth this week - and the worst thing to do is to make apologies. Someone who admires you makes the first move. A financial bonanza could arrive soon. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 The week is off to a bright start. Watch that you don’t volunteer too often - you are in an extremely giving mood. The time is right for at least one major decision. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 A conflict with someone who’s a lot like you may be unavoidable, but romantic uncertainties diminish and career prizes are within your reach. Sports events are favoured on the weekend. PISCES—February 20-March 20 A dash of adventure and a splash of colour - this could be one of your most exciting weekends. Think twice before accepting any ego flattering offer. Watch out for irresponsible borrowers this week. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK During the next three months, you will find it surprisingly difficult to make some of life’s larger decisions. Perhaps it is because you are beginning to act less implulsive, temperamental and stubborn.

NRL Preview

Blues to pick and choose By CASEY O’CONNOR THE Brisbane Broncos sit alone at the top of the table after the completion of round nine of the NRL. For many the focus now shifts to selections for game one of the State of Origin. Injuries, suspensions and form are set to play a vital role in Laurie Daley’s selection of the Blues team. In the Maroon camp coach Mal Meninga is giving every indication that it will be business as usual for the Maroons with few changes. Players have just one more opportunity to impress the SOG coaches. Friday night is shaping as a battle within a battle as the incumbent Blue’s paring of Bulldogs Trent Hodkinson Josh Reynolds battle for their Origin spots against the in-form partnership of Trent Mitchell Pearce and James Maloney. The Dogs pair has been out of sorts while the Roosters combination will be out to make a statement. The Roosters were in spectacular form when they trounced the Tigers in the last round. The Bulldogs will be bolstered by the return of their captain James Graham from suspension. Their performance against the Cowboys where they mounted a strong second half challenge was an improvement. This is sure to be a torrid takeno-prisoners game. Perhaps the Roosters. On Friday night in Townsville the Cowboys will have the welcome mat out for Cowboys fans as the club celebrates its 20 year anniversary. The all-Queensland blockbuster against the Broncos will serve as the backdrop to the club’s celebrations. The Broncos toughed out a low scoring game against a much improved Penrith outfit last week while the Cowboys made it six in a row with an impressive win over the Dogs. The Cowboys are in red hot form and against the Dogs showed they are becoming less reliant on Thurston for their scoring opportunities. The Cowboys have come a long way in 20 years and on Friday night they might take one more step towards their first premiership with a win over the Broncos. The Eels managed to stay with the Storm in the first half of their clash at AAMI Park but faded badly against the relentless Storm attack. Things won’t be easier for the Eels this week when they host the Warriors. After playing a starring role in the Anzac Day Test half back Shaun Johnson came up with the big plays when they were needed against the Sharks. The Warriors will be without Konrad Hurrell who faces a lengthy ban for a knee lift that left Cronulla’s Anthony Tupou with a broken jaw. It is hard to see an Eels win here.

With just three minutes remaining on the clock, Shark’s fans believed prop Andrew Fifita had sealed a win against the Warriors. After the Sharks had worked hard to put themselves in a winning position, Shaun Johnson stepped in and spoiled the party. This was an improved performance from the Sharks. This week they play the Titans but will be without Anthony Tupou who is sidelined with a broken jaw. The Gold Coast was less than impressive against the resurgent Raiders. Without suspended Greg Bird, the Titans lacked aggression and go forward. On the back of that performance it is hard to see them troubling the Warriors. One of the highlights of the round looks to be clash between the Bunnies and the Storm. On Monday night the Bunnies notched up their first win in three weeks. There was an air of confidence around the Bunnies that has been missing in recent weeks. It is no coincidence that the win coincided with the return of halfback Adam Reynolds. John Sutton’s return from injury was short lived. An accidental poke in the eye has him in grave doubt this weekend. The Bunnies showed glimpses of their 2014 premiership form. Billy Slater returned for Melbourne and made an immediate impact. Slater grabbed the headlines but the Storm’s Kiwi Test players Jesse Bromwich, Tohu Harris and Kevin Proctor all played decisive roles and will need to be at their best here. Melbourne continues to build momentum and although the Bunnies looked good I think the home side will get the chocolates. The Dragons looked on track to extend their six match winning streak at half time on Monday night against the Rabbitohs. In the second half the Bunnies had a glut of possession close to the line. The Dragons could hold out the Bunnies but lost no admirers going down 16-10 in a tough game. In round 10 they host the Raiders who only weeks ago were being touted as contenders for the 2015 wooden spoon. The Raiders have won four of five since Sam Williams replaced Mitch Cornish in the No.7 jumper. Williams played most of the game against the Titans with a collapsed lung and will be sidelined for this game. The Raiders thrashed the Titans but have a tougher task here. Canberra has always been a bogey side for the third placed Dragons and this will be a tough game for tipsters. I am leaning towards the Dragons only because of the loss of Williams. After a flying start to the season the wheels have fallen off the Knights.

This weekend they host the Tigers who were disappointing against the Roosters after posting a big win over Canterbury. Friday night’s walloping at the hands of the Roosters was a wake up call for the young Tigers players. They were outmuscled and outplayed. The Knights’ problems in defence were exploited by Manly at Brookvale Oval. Perhaps it is time for the coach to show some players some tough love. Hard to have the Knights here. Manly’s attack finally clicked into gear against the Knights as Daley Cherry-Evans turned on a masterclass. Brett Stewart, one of Manly’s favourite sons, joined the exclusive 150 NRL tries club. He becomes only the 10th player to reach the milestone in the history of the game. Manly has a host of players to return from the casualty ward as does its Monday night opponents Penrith. Last week the Panthers welcomed Jamie Soward back to the paddock and they looked ominous against the Broncos at Suncorp. Soward’s astute kicking game was a welcomed addition to the Panthers’ game plan. Penrith back-rower Tyrone Peachey has possibly earned a stint on the sidelines after a nasty tackle on Adam Blair. Penrith looks like a side that is ready to win a game and it could come at the expense of the Sea Eagles.

Horse course YOU can’t keep a great event down. A heavy horse day in Yangan has been resheduled to Sunday 18 October after wet weather forced the muchanticipated fund-raiser to be postponed this month. Mick Bradford’s Heavy Horse Demonstration Day hosted at his Yangan property brings tourists from as far as Brisbane and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, with all pro-

ceeds donated to RACQ Care Flight. The day has helped raise more than $100,000 for charity over the past 14 years. It features the fantastic working and static displays of horse-drawn equipment, blacksmithing, wheelwrighting, haymaking, chaffmaking and corn shelling, just to name a few. The event will be held at 122 Swanfels Road, Yangan.

England eye Dizzy heights? The

spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com

ONE of Australia’s favourite sons Dizzy Gillespie this week turned down the opportunity to coach the South Australia state cricket side next season. It has further fuelled rumours that the former paceman, currently coaching Yorkshire, is set to be offered the position of head coach of the English side. This follows England’s dismal performance in Australia in the summer, their shock exit in the World Cup and their poor performance in the West Indies. It seems that the door to the Pommie side has finally slammed in the face of Kevin Pietersen. Despite scoring an unbeaten 326 for his county side Sussex this week (a career best performance) Pietersen has been told by former team mate and England’s new director of cricket Andrew Strauss to forget about a recall. Plenty of people in the old dart believe it is a petty act, and he has been knifed in the back. Some critics were going as far as saying, they believe Strauss has put personal animosity ahead of the national team. English cricket appeared to be in disarray when they toured Australia and despite some changes at the helm, things still seem to be pretty rocky. If Dizzy gets this job, it is going to be a tough gig - restoring some pride in the team and dealing with the personalities on the fringes and in the boardroom. The man who could not get a coaching job in Australia, until this recent offer, has the runs on the board however and could be instrumental in giving the Aussies plenty of headaches in England in a few months. Interesting times ahead for cricket tragics. - Casey THRILLING WIN FOR COWBOYS THE Warwick Cowboys celebrated Mother’s Day with a thrilling 30-18 win over Valley’s Roosters, and has them knocking on the door of the top five on the TRL ladder. Luke Brosnan made a welcome return from injury adding plenty of experience to the Cowboys side. The Cowboys held a four-point lead at half time, but the game was very much in the balance. Both sides traded tries early in the second half before a length-of-the-field try to Cowboys flyer Braydon Wilson gave the visitors a 26-18 lead. In the concluding stages of the game, the Roosters threatened, but the advantage swung back to the Cowboys when the Roosters full back was sin binned seven minutes from full time. Hayden McNicol picked up his second try of the game as the clock ticked down to give the Cowboys a thrilling win. In other games, the Cowboys had a 40-12 win in Reserve Grade. The Under 18 side went down 24-14 to the Roosters, and in a close game the C Grade lost 18-16. This weekend the Cowboys host Dalby at Fr Ranger Oval. CRACKING DAY THE whips were cracking as the Inglewood SSAA Cowboys round in for some Single Action fun on Sunday. There were plenty of scenarios along the way, but eventually Tom Donald was declared the winner ahead of Iain Bowen and Peter Jones. Martin Unwin got away with the Rimfire event. He defeated Ray Dudgeon and Quentin Chapman. More fun and game on the Inglewood range. With Muzzle Loading and Rimfire events scheduled, anything could happen. Remember there is always a warm welcome for visitors. TIGERS TOP THE TABLE THE Tenterfield Tigers cemented their spot at the top of the BRL ladder on Saturday with an away win over Wallangarra. In a tough local derby, the Tigers were looking down the barrel of defeat at half time. A lack of discipline and poor ball control in the first half saw them trailing the home

Hockey action at the weekend. side 12-4 at the break. In an action-packed second half, the Tigers showed more composure and points followed. Wallangarra struggled after their key playmaker Coedie Tandy was sent off in the second half. Tandy was originally sin binned, but was sent off after back chatting referee Daniel Grungo. Tenterfield wrapped up the game with a 2618, but the score could have been more with the Tigers having four tries disallowed. Tigers captain coach Brendan Minns said he was pleased with the way his players stuck to their task after a disappointing first half, adding that there was still plenty of improvement in the side. “It was a strong team win,” Minns said. Speaking after the game, Minns said he was pleased with the way former Texas player Bennett Sutton had slotted into the Tenterfield side and along with Brad Ashcroft was best on field for the Tigers on Saturday. The Tigerettes continued their unbeaten run with a 28-4 win over the Ramettes. Despite the score line, this was an entertaining game and the Wallangarra girls are certainly showing a good deal of improvement. The Ladies League tag competition continues to grow in popularity both with players and spectators. This week the Tigers travel to Killarney and the Rams play the Gremlins at Sullivan Oval after their big win over Killarney last weekend. In their first home game of the season, the Gremlins thrashed an under-strength Cutters side 60-4. The 2014 premiers are struggling with player

numbers this season and battling a rising injury toll. The Cutters fielded only 12 players at the start of the game, and in the first half suffered a major blow to their chances when Kyle Daley was knocked unconscious, suffering a serious concussion. With no bench players to call on in the second half, Killarney could do little to stem the flow of tries against them as the Gremlins scored a procession of tries. Brad Britton continues to shine in his first year in “A” grade, scoring another double. Kyle Marsh was again one of the most consistent on the paddock and after his good showing in the South West Country rep side added another two tries to his tally for the season while team mate Lee Hicks also scored a pair. Other try scorers were Jason Wilmot, Tom Cameron and Tom Jensen. Wilmot added the extras with eight conversions. The Gremlinettes got the day off to a winning start for the locals with a tough 18-12 win over the Killarney girls. It is the first season of League Tag for the Killarney girls, and they showed plenty of skill in their game on Saturday. PERFECT CONDITIONS FOR BATES MEMORIAL THE weather gods certainly turned it on for the annual Maureen Bates Memorial Day on Sunday. A big crowd turned out in picture perfect condition. Matt Goddard and Henry Kelly (birthday boy) celebrated with a win and also returned the best gross round. Goddard also took the Pro Pin. Runners-up were Hannah Reeves and Keith Allen. The cricket boys dominated the run-downs

with balls to Rod Pettiford and Brett Lacey and Josh Anderson and Anthony Marino aka Woggy, who also had the Pin shot at the 12th. In case you had not noticed, Jack Frost has returned, so Sporters will tee off this Sunday at the later time - between 8.30-9am. BEARS CATCH WATTLES NAPPING TRL defending premiers, Wattles travelled to Oakey in round seven and the Bear handed them a wake-up call. The premiers were chasing their fifth successive win, but came up against a determined Oakey Bears outfit. The Bears were quickly out of the blocks and shocked the premiers to take a 36-10 lead at the half time break. Wattles scored 26 points in the second half in a great comeback, but Oakey hung on for a 48-36 win. Wattles reserve grade had more success with a 38-22 win. Wattles C Grade, the Millmerran Rams posted another big win with a 62-nil win. The Millmerran Rams are dominating the Clive Berghofer Cup 2nd Division competition and have scored 128 points at their past two outings. In round eight, Wattles will be looking to bounce back with a win when they host Goondiwindi. BRANDON TAKES OUT RUMBLE JOHN Brandon scored 19 points to collect the goodies in last Friday’s Red Rooster Rumble. There was a small but competitive field out and about John Brandon edged out runner-up Neville Heard who finished with18 points. Clive Pulley, Gordon McKeen and Greg Wallace each received a ball in the run down. Pulley grabbed the pin on seven; John Francis had success at nine but five seemed out of everyone’s reach.

minded to check in 20 minutes before tee time. SINGLE STABLEFORD AT 'GARRA GOLFERS played a single stableford round last Saturday in Wallangarra. The sponsor was Dennis McMeniman, and he apparently also ordered some good weather. Kevin Williams returned 41 points, a score good enough to win the round. John Green grabbed second place with Peter Williams and Brendan McMillan finished in third place. Young Harry Donnelly had the shot of the day, taking the pin on 3/15. Scott Williams took the pin at nine while Tony Murphy hit a beauty on 11 for the pin on that hole. John Green won the Jackpot on hole 11. We are unable to confirm reports that John shouted the bar; however we can confirm an unnamed player who had one or two unfortunate Tee shots did indeed shout a few extra drinks. This weekend Sue and Taffy Edwards are sponsoring a Two Ball Ambrose at the ’Garra. ACTION AT ALLMAN PARK THE whips will be cracking at Allman Park on Saturday when the Warwick Turf Club host the 121st Warwick Picnic races. The club has another big five race program scheduled for Saturday. After the close of nominations, a total of 89 horses were nominated for the program. It is almost a month since local galloper Rip Rip Woodchip’s last start and he is ideally placed in the Grove Juice Squeeze Benchmark 70 Handicap over 110 metres and looks destined for another battle with arch-rival Bombproof. The Ergon Energy Benchmark 55 has attracted 20 nominations. The Ken Waller trained Easy To Smile has solid form leading into this race. Five-year-old Grey Derby, who was successful at his first race start at the last Allman Park meeting, lines up with a strong field in the Peter Stewart Automotive Class B over the 1100 metre journey. The two Maiden events over the 1100 metre and 1350 metre journeys have attracted big nominations. Everything points to another great day of racing at Allman Park with pre-purchased tickets available for the coffee club Marquee. Ladies don’t forget the Fashions on the Field competition. A Calcutta evening will be held on Friday night at the Palace Hotel to kick start the meeting.

McKENZIE GALLOPS AWAY WITH WIN THE Horse and Jockey Hotel Motel sponsored the Men’s single stableford competition on Saturday. Shane McKenzie had the whip hand, carding 39 points to gallop away with a convincing win. Runner-up was John Brack with a score of 36. In the run down, John Francis Eamon Cockram, Charlie Morrison Viv Roser and Laurie King each picked up a ball. Shane McKenzie also collected the pin at five. Dennis Murphy tasted success on 7, Charlie Morrison 9, Brendon Jones 11, Don Maher 13 and Eamon Cockram at 16. Saturday the trophy hunters will be out in force in an effort to get their name on the prestigious Cunningham Trophy. It’s a single stroke event and is sponsored by Bob Lindenberg. On Sunday, the club is hosting a four ball Ambrose event in support of Akooramak. The timesheets are in the pro shop (4661 3664). A reminder to all golfers that if you are looking for new clubs fitted exactly to your swing and idiosyncrasies, Jake Hartvigson from Mizuno in conjunction with Rob McConnell’s golf shop will be holding a club fitting and demo day on Wednesday June 10 from 10am - 1pm. Make your booking early to avoid disappointment. QUALITY ON DISPLAY AT SUMMIT THE 2015 A Grade singles played at the Summit Bowls Club last weekend showcased the depth of quality bowlers at the club. The standard was outstanding and any number of players could have won the Championships. In the end, it came down to two of the club’s most experienced to fight it out for the title, Rob Capelli and Len Covill. There were some quality and competitive bowls played in the lead-up rounds. In the semis, Len Covill had a 25-12 win over Keith Mungall.

tactics the visiting Toowoomba club recently showed them and from the results it was obvious all players benefited from the visit. The red team had a successful day with three wins; 14-10, 14-4. 11-9. The white team won the fourth game 11- 9. Heather was the most improved player on the day. Gateball games only last half an hour, so it is easy to slot in extra players who cannot make the 9am start. Players welcomed Tenterfield visitor Lorraine who tried the game for the first time. LEADERS AFTER SECOND ROUND AFTER the second round of the Stanthorpe Golf club championships, Dylan Barraclough has taken a handy lead in “A” grade, and it is hard to see him being run down. In the “B” grade, Bill Pyne and Mark McCosker are on equal points but Aaron Simmers and Kev Rowling are hot on their heels. Lance Eagle had a good round to jump to a one stroke lead in the “C” grade ahead of Viv Thouard, who had a few too many putts at the last hole. There are three players within three shots of this pair. The C Grade is a very open affair and we could be in for an exciting finish. Last Saturday, Bill Pyne had the best round of the day. Pyne finished with nett 66, taking the top prize for the day. That round also elevated him to equal first place in the B grade section of the club championships. Runner-up Dylan Barraclough had another solid round of nett 69. He also collected the pro-pin shot at 9/18.
