THREAT: An orange-bellied parrot.
MOOLAP’S $4 billion Nelson Cove project has been dealt a curve ball with news the orangebellied parrot is facing extinction from an outbreak of beak and feather disease. The former saltworks site is considered crucial habitat to the endangered bird, now down to 50 in the wild. Federal Government has demanded an urgent response to the latest threat, which has killed many of this year’s fledglings. The orange-bellied parrot has been a political issue several times in the past when its presence conflicted with develop-
ments including a petrochemical complex proposed for Point Lillias, a $220 million wind farm at Bald Hills in south-east Victoria and a Mornington Peninsula marina. The bird, which migrates annually between Tasmania and Victoria, has also been regularly involved in Tasmanian forest issues and was used against a now-failed $2 billion wind farm development on King Island. Ridley Corporation’s Nelson Cove, proposing 4000 dwellings, would create thousands of jobs. But Geelong Field Naturalists Club has cautioned against the development and Environment Minister and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville has called for a land-use
study of the area. Threatened Species Commissioner Gregory Andrews was unsure whether the disease was a problem yet for parrots in the Geelong area. “It is too early to say whether the local populations in the Geelong region have been affected, he told the Independent. “Experts will be reviewing and assessing this next week. Adult birds are much less vulnerable to the disease than nestlings, so birds that have successfully migrated to the mainland are likely to be okay. Mr Andrews said the Government had put more than $5 mil-
lion toward protecting the bird since 2006, including funding for habitat restoration in Victoria. Monitoring of a Tasmanian breeding site earlier this year found that 19 out of 26 chicks tested positive for the disease, which is common among other species such as sulphur-crested cockatoos and rainbow lorikeets. Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt has demanded an urgent response to the bird’s disease crisis and Mr Andrews has called for scientists with differing views to collaborate on the threat. As a phone repair shop, we’ve seen a lot of dead phones. Some phones decide to take up swimming as a hobby, others try to play stunt-man by seeing how long they can hold on to the roof of a moving car (as far as I know, the record is held by a particularly resilient Nokia from Wangaratta who managed to hold on for a whopping 12 seconds before it’s untimely demise, mayherestinpeace) . A great number of phones have mastered the art of altering the very fabric of space and time, rendering themselves entirely more susceptible to the forces of gravity. In an age where we can instantly share our thoughts and ideas across the entire globe from a device that its perfectly in our pockets and in what this writer can only describe as complete and utter cockamamie, we have yet to see the invention of tiny parachutes for our phones. Inconceivable!

STICK your head up and, well, you know the rest. Just ask mayor Darryn Lyons, who’s adopted the social media hashtag #onetrickpony after Geelong MP Chris Couzens branded him as such in parliament. On Twitter this week he reminded her that his trick snaffled Geelong $15.6 million in media value during his first 100 days as mayor. Seems Christine can’t take a trick! AND it wasn’t just political heads popping over Lyons - he also used social media this week to show off a couple of purple-and-white 3D-printed miniatures of his noggin as well as a mohawked Lego offering. Yet another post offered further signs of frustration with council colleagues when he circulated a photo of a lion up a tree surrounded by marauding buffaloes. “My Tuesday nights! he tweeted in a reference to council meetings. LOCK your car is the word around Geelong after the RACV posted a 50 per cent in theft claims last year.
A total 67 cars were nicked, worth $743,483 in insurance payouts, with damaged cars - malicious damage, actually - costing another $99,488. FRESH from last week’s findings about beaks growing in response to climate change, Deakin University has furthered its avian exploits with video cameras on seabirds. The purpose, apparently, was to find out how the birds find food in “different environments. Double Take advises the boffins to consider trademarking the world’s first feathered drone. LABOR’S candidate for the federal seat of Corangamite is certainly keen. In a media release this week she described herself as “Federal MP, Libby Coker. That would have come as a surprise to Liberal Sarah Henderson, who won the seat from Darren Cheeseman at the 2013 federal election. Ms Coker will have to wait at least until August 2016 for her crack at the seat. Maybe she hopes for a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Fight hits jobs By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AN ACRIMONIOUS dispute between the developer of an $80 million residential golf estate and the owners of a flower farm threatens 15 jobs. The dispute, which has reached the Supreme Court of Victoria, could lead to the closure of Geelong Flower Farm, affecting four full-time and 11 parttime staff. The claims and counter-claims include allegations of assault, bad blood and legal wrangling dating back more than a year. The dispute has widened to include legal actions in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) and Geelong
Magistrates Court as well as the Supreme Court writ. Court documents say Geelong Flower Farm has been operating on its site on the Bellarine Hwy, Moolap, for 15 years, with Bellarine Lakes Country Club developing behind. The the main dispute is over access to the battle-axe shaped Bellarine Lakes site. In the VCAT action Bellarine Lakes claims Geelong Flower Farm is operating illegally because flowers it sells are grown elswehere. Bellarine Lakes has petitioned VCAT for an order to withdraw the farm’s operating permit. Geelong Magistrates Court
heard a fencing dispute between the parties this week, with arguments over an easement to be heard in the Supreme Court on Thursday. Barrister Daniel Aghion, for Bellarine Lakes, told the magistrates court of “immense bad blood between the parties. Barrister Andrew Meagher, for Geelong Flower Farm, said his client objected to Bellarine Lakes building fences between the properties. After negotiations Geelong Flower Farm conceded to a fence on the southern boundary but continued to dispute fencing on the northern boundary.

Bunnings’ new plan to be masters of Leopold By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN BUNNINGS has snapped up an opportunity for a hardware store at Leopold after the troubled Masters chain abandoned it in 2013. A City Hall spokesperson confirmed council had received an application for an expansion of Gateway Plaza Shopping Centre to include a large format hardware store. A sign advertising the planning permit application has appeared on land beside the existing shopping centre. The Independent reported in February 2013 that Leopold lost a proposed Masters hardware store after a planning wrangle. Developer Lascorp had sought approval to extend Gateway Plaza Shopping Centre west along Bellarine Hwy as part of an 35,000-square-metre
expansion. But council adopted a Leopold structure plan maintaining the town’s western boundary, which blocked the westerly extension. An independent planning panel backed council on the boundaries in the structure plan. The planning panel heard that Lascorp “made it very clear to the panel that it wishes to develop a stand-alone bulky goods outlet on its land west of Clifton Ave”. “In the event that this option was not supported, Masters would not develop anywhere in the centre, which would be to the loss of both Leopold and the Bellarine Peninsula.” The panel backed council position that the shopping centre extension should be along Melaluka Rd instead.
Masters also won a permit for a large-format hardware store in Bacchus Marsh Rd, Corio, but has yet to carry out any work on the site. Woolworths and American hardware giant Lowe’s own Masters, while Bunnings is a stablemate of Coles in the Wesfarmers group. The home-improvement rivals have been conducting a price war and advertising blitz as Masters attempts to turn around its losses and win market share from the established Bunnings. The former owners of major Mitre 10 stores in Geelong, Keith and Barry Fagg, used landholdings to stymie development of other large-formate hardware store in the region for years. The Faggs lodged objections against planning permit applications from both Bunnings and Masters.

Jobs rally WORKERS and union leaders rallied in Geelong yesterday against the pending loss of 80 jobs from Barwon Health outsourcing laundry services. The rally called for government intervention against the outsourcing plan, which would save Barwon Health the expense of an $11 million upgrade to its own laundry.

Bridge closes DRIVERS’ collisions with support beams will force the closure of a bridge linking Newtown and Highton this long weekend. Vicroads said Queen’s Park bridge would close from 7.30pm tonight to 7am Tuesday so workers could carry out repairs in safety.
Veterans revamp VETERANS in Geelong will continue receiving face-to-face services three days a week under a revamp of existing arrangements, according to Veterans’ Affairs Minister Michael Ronaldson. He announced the changes ahead of the closure of Geelong’s Veterans Access Network office amid declining visitation.
NEW BUSINESS awards will recognise top operators in the Lara district. Lara District Community Bank and the town’s Chamber of Commerce opened nominations this week. Chamber vice-president Natalie Candy said Lara District Business Awards would recognise businesses playing “an important role in the local community”. “These awards are not like any other businesses awards – there are no written submissions and no costs to enter,” Ms Candy said.
“We’re excited to recognise the work being done in the community.” Ms Candy said winners would be announced at a presentation event in August as Victoria conducted its annual Small Business Festival. “Prizes include media exposure and substantial funds contributed to the local community group of choice.” The Geelong Independent is sponsoring the Lara District Business Awards. Managing editor Tony Galpin said the Independent was rapt to participate.
PERSONALISED coaching and peer support via the phone and social media will seek to boost the fitness of 2000 central Geelong workers in a pilot program. City Hall said Geelong Active City would work with 14 employers, with the aim of increasing participants’ physical activity by 10 to 15 minutes a day.
“I commend the chamber and community bank on establishing such an accessible awards program,” Mr Galpin said. “I’m sure local businesses will appreciate the absence of entry fees and time-consuming submission forms. The emphasis on community involvement is also a welcome point of difference.” Ms Candy said nominations forms were available at Lara District Community Bank until 30 June. Ms Candy said more information about the awards was available from the bank’s branch manager, Damien Foster, phone 5282 6430, 0434 769 972, or email mail@LDCE.com.au.

LOCAL gay marriage campaigners have welcomed Corangamite’s Sarah Henderson as their new “voice“ in federal parliament. The Liberal MP attracted national attention when she came out in favour of same-sex marriage this week, saying it was “consistent with fundamental Liberal values”. Geelong for Marriage Equality convener Sharyn Faulkner said the group was “extremely happy” with Ms Henderson, who was now “a voice in parliament that truly believes in human rights and in equality for all Australians“. “When we first met with Sarah over 18 months ago she challenged us to provide her with evidence to show that the Corangamite electorate wants marriage equality. We are proud to have been able to assist Sarah in this quest,” Ms Faulkner said. “We encouraged the City of Greater Geelong and Surf Coast Shire to support marriage equality. We have been instrumental in getting the Geelong Football Club and the AFL to support marriage equality.

nouncement earlier this week in anticipation of a party-room vote the following day. The vote failed to materialise. “I confirm that I support both marriage equality and a free vote for Coalition MPs,” she said. “I committed to consult broadly and then make my position known when the issue came before the party room. Since being elected as the Member for Corangamite I have listened to hundreds of my constituents with an open heart and an open mind. “As an MP driven by a strong sense of compassion, equity and justice, I believe our nation should follow the lead of countries such as the UK, New Zealand, Canada and Ireland and legalise same-sex marriage. “Support for marriage equality is consistent with fundamental Liberal values that embrace freedom of the individual and stable, long-term relationships. “If two people love each other and wish to commit to a life together they should have the option to be recognised equally under the law.”

Mansion bid riles green group By NOEL MURPHY are ENVIRONMENTALISTS anxious a bid to expand Campbell Point House might be the start of more incursions on Lake Connewarre and a world-recognised wildlife habitat. The high-end function centre will take its plan to Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal after suffering a first-
round knock-back at council. “A major concern is the possibility that an approval for this development would act as a precedent for further applications for development around the lake system,” Geelong Environment Council (GEC) stated in its latest newsletter. “The land is zoned rural and covered with protective planning overlays. There is also a Trust for
HIGH END: Campell Point House, $5000 a night on weekends. Nature covenant over the area of the property on the edge of the lake.”
GEC was especially concerned about potential building plans on private land where titles extended to the water’s edge. “Considering Connewarre lake is a component of the Bellarine Ramsar listing, GEC also believes that this application should trigger an environmental effects statement as there are many bird species listed under this federal act.”
Campbell Point House is on 14 hecatres off Matthews Road, Leopold. The property was used for an episode of TV’s MasterChef and a baby shower for footy WAG Rebecca Judd. The property, offering five bedroom suites, a pool, spa, tennis court, private jetty and full butler service, costs $3500 a night midweek and $5000 at weekends.
The owners want to add a new tennis court, gym, staff house, two five-bedroom log cabins, four one-bedroom garden pavilions and two four-bedroom cottage houses, each with a pool and cabana, plus a 92-space car park. St Quentin Consulting, acting for the owners, did not respond to the Independent’s request for comment.

TORQUAY nurse Kim Poyner is a tough coach tough but fair. Her goals aren’t between the big sticks or into nets or through hoops. They’re much more important. She keeps people alive; people struggling with chronic disease, frustrated by enforced changes to their lives or battling to stay on the straight and narrow. Last month she was one of six recipients of an Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association award, winning the category of best practice in chronic disease management. With a background in intensive care, for the past six years she has worked at Surfcoast Medical Centre with patients suffering such problems as heart disease and diabetes. “Consulting in the chronic disease clinic three days a week, I noticed a cohort of clients that were stuck and frustrated with their prescribed goals and health outcomes,” she said. “Some were overwhelmed, didn’t know where to start and were potentially fearful of what perceived changes were necessary in their lifestyles. “Another limiting factor was the three monthly reviews. Clients would say they were motivated for the first month and then lost their way by the time they came up for their next review.” Ms Poyner responded with monthly wellness coaching, including motivational interviews and positive psychology. The results were telling, including weight loss, slimmer waists, greater motivation and self-belief, diabetes improvements, reduced drinking and smoking, and returns to physical activity.

Mr Andrews said he had contacted the Tasmanian Government, Birdlife Australia, NESP Threatened Species Recovery Hub, Orange-bellied Parrot Recovery Team and the CSIRO ahead of an emergency meeting at Melbourne Zoo next week. “CSIRO has advised that it has capabilities that could build in resistance to the virus that causes beak and feather disease. This is a DNA virus and several approaches could be evaluated to assess resistance.” Ridley spokesman Stephen Butler said the company had never found an orange-bellied parrot on the site despite “numerous surveys” over “a number of years”. “We’re aware that surveys regularly undertaken by the Geelong Field Naturalist Club in the past have also failed to record the species at the site.” Mr Butler said Ridley had proposed a 450-hectare state-owned-and-controlled bird conservation reserve on a former saltworks site at Lara, providing “ideal habitat for migratory birds including the orange bellied parrot”. Ridley still had “no details” of the Government study, he said. “But we’re keen to be briefed as soon as possible, as timing is critical AWARDED: Torquay nurse Kim Poyner has won national recognition for her work helping patients manage chronic disease. for our investors.”

Labor ‘abandons’ city Wet May finishes weather Lindsay Smail
By NOEL MURPHY
STATE Labor has abandoned Geelong on multiple fronts, opposition leader Matthew Guy claimed this week in a savage attack on Spring Street. Mr Guy said the Andrews Government had misled Geelong about its Bay West container port proposal, stalled inexplicably on a planning authority for the central city area and given Geelong’s Land 400 defence bid no more than “a shingle on a door”. The Government had also failed to provide a sorely-needed hospital for Geelong’s north, ignored the city’s convention centre proposal, foregone East West Link job and transport opportunities and stalled on an MCG-style trust for Kardinia Park, he told the Independent. “If we’d done the same we’d be getting rightfully kicked.” Mr Guy said the Government talked up its propopsed Bay West container port east of Geelong before the election but had now revealed a non-competition clause in its plan to lease Melbourne’s port. “There’s no second port for 50 to 70 years they’ve completely misled the city.” Mr Guy had heard “absolutely nothing” about Labor’s much-vaunted Geelong planning authority. “I’ve been the planning minister and I can tell you straight out...if they wanted to put in place a planning authority you could do it in a couple of days.” Mr Guy attacked the Government’s failure to lobby for a share of the $10 billion Land 400 defence contracts. “There’s no substance and South Australia is putting tens of millions of dollars into this to get the Land 400 project. They’ve already got departments set up. “A shingle on a door out at Deakin isn’t going to cut it.“ Mr Guy said the MCG-style trust for Kardinia Park was “not a bad idea but I don’t know where it is”. The previous coalition goverment had committed $5 million for “a serious look” at developing a Geelong convention centre but Labor had done nothing, he said. Mr Guy accused the Government of “spin, all

A Government spokesperson said Geelong went backwards under the Liberals. “We’re getting Geelong back on track,” the spokesperson said. “Our Regional Rail Link will add 200 services every week between Geelong and Melbourne, while the Western Distributor will wipe 15 minutes off travel time between Melbourne and Geelong, providing a second river crossing to reduce pressure on the West Gate Bridge. “This is in contrast to the Liberals’ botched and
financially reckless East West Link which would have lost Geelong taxpayers 55 cents in every dollar spent on it.” The spokesperson said the Victorian Defence Procurement Office was promoting “Victorian business and research capabilities” for land 400. “Unlike the Liberals, we have stood by the defence industry since day one and we hope Matthew Guy is also speaking with his federal counterparts to ensure they end the long-standing uncertainty for workers in the Victorian defence industry.”
MOST of the Geelong-Otways region, except its northern area, received average to well-above average rain in May. The Bureau of Meteorology’s automatic weather station at Breakwater failed three times during the month, thereby missing approximately 20mm of rain and affecting the bureau’s published Geelong total. The rain for Breakwater, as computed by Geelong Weather Services, for May was 42.4mm, just above the latest 30-year average of 41.5mm. Mt Sabine, at the head of the Barwon catchment in the Otway Ranges, recorded an amazing 344mm, well-above its average. The region’s water storages were stationary at 57 per cent of capacity when the month ended but the level will need to increase over winter. As far as autumn overall is concerned, this year’s was drier than the most-recent 30-year average. Geelong received 93mm over autumn compared to its average 109mm. This corresponds with a slowly-drying trend in autumn over the past 30 years. May was also cooler than the 30-year average but the nights were warmer. Overall the mean May temperature for Geelong was warmer by a mere .2C. The month’s highest temperature was 22.7C on 2 May and the lowest overnight minimum was 4.4C on the 26th. The coldest day was 23 May with a maximum of 12.9C. Autumn overall was cooler by .3C than the latest 30-year average temperature. March and April were cooler and May was warmer. As for other weather phenomena in May, no storms were recorded but four days had strong wind gusts over 60km/h. The strongest was 74km/h at Breakwater on 11 May.

Parties at war over NBN ‘dud’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE NBN rollout in Corangamite is a “dud”, according to Labor candidate Libby Coker. No “pre-existing” home or business had connected so far, she said. But sitting Liberal MP Sarah Henderson hit back, saying the fixed-fibre rollout was continuing and the number of connections
to the NBN through other technologies such as wireless far outstripped results under the former Labor federal government. Ms Coker said a rollout assessment based on NBNCo information showed Corangamite was dudded then charged more for late second-rate services. “The assessment shows not one single town or suburb, small or large, in the Corangamite
region has pre-existing homes or businesses connected by fibre at this stage. Not one,” she said. “Of the 24 towns and suburbs in Corangamite the only fibre connections made available are in a few greenfield sites. “There are plans to start in only four pre-existing towns and suburbs and not one of these projects has got off the ground yet.
“Somewhere in the never never, if we do get connected, we’re going to get charged more for a second rate service. Under the Abbott Government’s policy, when this snail’s-pace rollout arrives we’ll have to either settle for a second-rate copper connection to the node or pay through the nose to get a superfast, reliable fibre connection.”
Ms Henderson said Labor would have delivered a “goldplated NBN” costing taxpayers an extra $32 billion and householders $43 a month more. She said fibre-to-the-node products would deliver speeds of up to 100 megabits a second without additional cost to householders over and above ordinary connection fees. “Under Labor in Corangamite
there were just 199 premises in greenfield areas connected and 140 on fixed wireless. Not one home was connected to the NBN’s fixed line network in established neighbourhoods in six years,” Ms Henderson said. “We now have 1333 in greenfields and 777 connected on fixed wireless, with 2260 passed by fixed wireless and another 387 on the interim satellite service.”
Cold snap delays coastal link work By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A COLD snap has delayed the final seal on a section of Geelong’s newest road, Baanip Blvd, connecting Anglesea Rd and Surf Coast Hwy. VicRoads opened the main section of Baanip Blvd to ensure the seal on the road sets correctly. When the weather permits, the final 700m between Ghazeepore and Angelsea Rds will be sealed, opening the entire length of the boulevard to traffic. All works on the new road were expected to be complete ahead of schedule by the end of this year. The project so far runs to Ghazeepore Rd but has been completed six months ahead of schedule. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the new $90.4 million road was important for the developing Armstrong Creek precinct. He said shared pedestrian and cyclist paths connecting the boulevard to the local network were also important community benefits. “When this upgrade is complete it will provide a more direct route for commuters travelling to and from Melbourne via the Geelong ring road. The upgrade will also provide a more effective route for freight and tourist traffic travelling to the Surf Coast.” The project includes extensive landscaping works and noise walls. The road has been named after Willem Baanip, a Wathaurong man who lived around Geelong in the 1800s.

Elderly ‘relief’ on bus access

NEWTOWN residents faced with the loss of their bus service have had a win with new regional timetables released this week. The Independent reported in January the proposed bus service cuts could force elderly and unwell Newtown residents to sell up and move so they were closer to public transport. More than 200 residents around the Barwon River end of West Fyans St signed a petition protesting the Public Transport Victoria (PTV) cuts. But Newtown's Kevin Boland said the timetables showed only a reduced service to the area rather than an absence of any bus access. “It’s not as frequent as it was but at least we still have a service,” Mr Boland said.

FLASHBACK: The Independent’s January story on fears of proposed bus cuts. “The older residents and those relying on the bus as their only means of transport are quite relieved.” The new timetables were released to coincide with the 21 June opening of the $3.65 billion regional rail link between Geelong and Melbourne. Bus timetables were adjusted to provide more extensive, frequent, reliable and direct services, coordinated with trains. Public transport minister Jacinta Allan said the new timetable ong

Train ‘pervert’ shocks commuters A MAN committed an indecent act in front of female commuters on a train travelling from Geelong to Melbourne, police have alleged. Victoria Police this week issued an image of a man they want to interview about the 28 April incident. A police spokesperson said two women sat opposite the man after boarding the V/Line train at Marshall about 6.30am. “During the hour-long journey the man was seen touching himself inappropriately and stopped when the women noticed what he was doing.“ One of the women used her mobile phone to take a photo of the man. The spokesperson described the man as Indian in appearance and aged in his 30s.

Letters Gee(21), that’s costly THE ALLIANCE body for the region’s councils, G21, wants to open an office in Canberra and it will only cost about $600,000-plus. Then on top of that, according to City of Greater Geelong budget figures, we ratepayers already pay $436,000 to the running of G21. Of course, the other four local shires put in as well. If G21 gets an office in Canberra ratepayers will be up for over $1 million per year – and that’s only from Geelong’s council. Not bad for a group that we never elected. Bob Thompson Ocean Grove
Unheard on fluoride BARWON Water’s marketing department had the greatest idea for a while. I was invited to partake in a community consultative meeting – me, who suffers chronic illness from fluoride. It was a very enlightening experience, addressing developments, new infrastructure and the need for a new holding basin at Airey’s Inlet along with new pumping station. The customer relations information was encouraging and Barwon Water was really concerned about getting things right with bill payments, one-on-one advice et cetera. I look forward to the next meeting. I do hope others are given the same opportunity, even one at a time, to know how the consultative committee uses its information. It is vital for the committee to have a community member who listens to the people in the street. I believe that the good people on the committee did not understood that the fluoride State Government has instructed Barwon Water to feed us in the name of dental caries contains dangerous heavy metals. Safe drinking water for all should be a priority, not care of dental caries for the minority. Sandra Camm Highton
Signs of adaptation ear, there and everywhere DEAKIN University’s latest research, revealed in Double Take (Independent, 29 May), concerns the adaptation of animal and human bodies to ensure survival as our environment becomes hotter. I'm pleased to report the good news is that certain individuals world-wide are already showing signs of developing larger appendages that will indeed keep our bodies from overheating. From Prince Charles in the Northern Hemisphere to Prime Minister Tony Abbott in Canberra, bigger ears are becoming more common.
BIG EARS: Does Tony Abbott’s head represent an evolutionary response to global warming?
The outer-ear is the thinnest part of the body and as the heated blood flows
Why did Mr Pallas ignore the fact that 62 communities throughout the affected regions in Victoria had declared themselves gas field-free? These communities include City of Greater Geelong and Surf Coast Shire, both of which are partly in the PEP 163 onshore gas exploration area. The gas field-free declarations were made because each community had determined the unconventional gas mining industry to be toxic to the environment, our water resources and health and that the industry cannot be trusted to dispose of wastewater safely. Now Ms Pallas claims these communities are “confused”? If comments like this provide an indication of what we can expect at the forthcoming parliamentary inquiry into unconventional gas mining then can we expect this type of government misinformation to be part of the inquiry process? Alan Manson Frack Free Grovedale
Pallas ‘confused’ on fracking Help our cats and koalas AT A RECENT Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA) conference Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas said the public was "confused and uncertain about unconventional gas exploration and extraction (fracking)”.
SADLY yet another Parks Victoria act of incompetence is unfolding in the Otways with the koala fiasco. Parks Victoria has been incompetent for decades on koalas, quolls, Tasmanian tigers and big cat in the Otways and Surf Coast.

through the ears it is able to release heat and become cooler, so bigger ears will be more proficient in cooling the body. Therefore, people with large ears will be preferred as marriage partners to ensure the survival of future generations. Animals should also be studied so that those developing larger ears, such as rabbits, hares and kangaroos, might well become a viable source of meat. In this debate the ears have it! Private enterprise is needed to get conservation into the 21st Century. The failing Labor State Government has put public sector unions ahead of conservation tourism and farming communities. Parks Victoria hides behind silence and has contempt for the taxpaying public, which finds it unproductive and unaccountable. Readers can report sightings of Tasmanian tigers and puma or panther-like animals to me on 0434 904 944. Michael Moss Richmond
Back from caring hospital I RECENTLY spent time in Geelong Private Hospital for a back injection. I must say it is the best hospital in Geelong for care of patients. Its nurses also give excellent care. I thank the nursing staff. Geelong Private is the most-caring hospital in the city. Brian Porter Grovedale

Grovedale Community Hub with my youngest sons, Christian and Jack. The hub was funded via an election commitment I made in 2010 but which, incredibly, was not matched by Labor. The project cost was $6.7 million, with the Napthine Government providing $2 million. The hub provides for an integrated children’s centre, Grovedale Senior Citizens Club, Grovedale Neighbourhood House, aged care and youth services. Importantly, occasional care and playgroups will also be available for families. Grovedale Community Hub will cater for growth in Grovedale and Armstrong Creek. Putting acid on deniers I NOTED with interest Tim Saclier’s letter in the 15 May Independent, denying acidification of the oceans by carbon dioxide. It seems climate change deniers are switching their tack. Just which part of the science do they not understand? Do they not accept that about 35 per cent of all carbon dioxide generated ends up in the oceans? If they don’t then where do they think it’s all going because only a fraction remains in the air? If they do accept that it’s dissolving in the oceans then how is the carbonic acid so formed not acidic? Can’t we move this debate on to how we combat this problem before it’s too late. Test old drivers AS I LEFT a shopping centre car park a car drove toward me in my lane. Fortunately, I stopped so it was a reasonably gentle knock when we made contact. I got out of my car to see at the wheel an elderly gentleman who promptly and angrily accused me of driving on the wrong side of the road! “I'll report you to the police. Don't you know how to drive,” he shrieked. Conversation was impossible – he was away with the fairies. It was further evidence we need to check the driving skills and road knowledge of older drivers annually. Michael J Gamble Belmont

Voices of rock return to city TRY THIS quick list for a catalogue of classic Australian rock hits: Great Wall, Onion Skin, Dancing In The Storm, Get Set, Everywhere You Go, Creepin’ Up Slowly, Run To Paradise, Boys Will Be Boys, Never Gonna Die. It’s a snapshot of hardrocking Aussie musical history. But how far would punters have to travel to find these seminal songs performed live by anything other than a solo or duo cover band on acoustic guitars? The live music industry has changed substantially over the life of the bands who wrote and performed these songs. Taxiride’s Jason Singh will readily attest to that, likewise his mates from Boom Crash Opera and Choirboys. Which is why they’ve joined forces to bring their hits – some 18 top-40 offerings from the ’80s, ’90s and noughties – back to the public, live and raw, soulful and powerful. And according to Singh, it’s going to be as much as hoot for him and Boom Crach Opera’s
Dale Ryder and Choirboys’ Mark Gable as it will be for audiences when the trio plays at Corio’s Gateway Hotel next month. The triumvirate’s chart success has been coupled with multi-platinum number-one albums, ARIA awards and decades of sold-out live shows. “We’ll be doing the hits, every one of them,” Singh told the Independent. “We’re all doing about five each of our own singles and then a bunch of covers of Australian classics and then an allin brawl at the end, hopefully not the audience.” Singh said the new show, christened The Voices Of was an example of how live music in Australia had changed in recent years. Maintaining a career as a working musician wasn’t getting any easier but at the ripe old age of 40, Singh said he was still writing prodigiously and excited about performing. Singh’s songwriting has struck a chord with Aussie audiences and even though the
knack of penning a hit is a difficult thing to describe he has an MO that’s been working pretty well. “Sometimes I’m lucky enough to pull one out of the sky. It’s interesting because people remember you by a song and you can define your life by one song,” he says. “I’m coming up 20 years in the industry and it’s changed a lot and you’ve got to change with it which is what The Voices Of is about,” he said. “People want to hear hit after hit these days and there comes a time in your career when you feel proud and hold very fond memories of these songs. “This was my idea. I thought, ‘Why not get together and do all our hits’. “The other blokes are my friends and they jumped at it. We’ll be paying respect to some of the biggest hits Australia’s ever had – including songs I grew up on.” Singh and friends will appear in The Voices Of at the Gateway Hotel on 11 July.

WINGING IT: Geelong personality Angie Hilton will MC the inaugural Wingmen singles night at Deakin University’s Waterfront campus.

MAKING new friends of the opposite gender can be difficult for anyone uncomfortable with late-night clubs or expensive online dating sites. But a group of event management students have come up with Wingmen, a Geelong gathering to bring together singles in an entertaining environment. Organiser ‘Dinky’ said the event, at Deakin University’s Waterfront Kitchen, was all about “friends supporting friends with the hope of meeting someone to eat with, dance with and laugh with”. “The idea of Wingmen came because people who are single don’t like going to single events all on their own, so with this they bring their mates to support them in finding someone.” Singer-presenter Angie Hilton will MC the 4 July event, with DJ Ali and singer Jason Coghill providing music. “It started as a singles night but it become open to all,“ Dinky explained. “Angie’s going to host a few games, Spicks and Specks kind of things, quizzes on music and general knowledge and motivate people to get up and dance. “We have a tarot reader coming, too. It’s all a chance to get dressed up, wear some nice clothes, hear some bands and music and just have a fun night out while getting to meet some new people.” Dinky said doors would open 7.30pm for an 8 star, with entry costing $40.

Young players in classic Pan The troupe said the directions to its production of Peter Pan –The British Musical were simple, “take the second star on the right, head straight and keep a weather eye open for mermaids, Indians and magic“. The GPAC stage would be transformed into a magical world for the show, GSODA said, taking audiences from Wendy’s home in London to the enchanting Neverland, accompanied by a catchy musical score including Wendy’s Song, Come Away, Rich Damp Cake and Braves to War. The cast of singers, dancers and actors – aged between 11 and 17 – include Maddy Iloski in the title role, Liam Ryder as Pan’s
charismatic arch-enemy, Hook, Chloe Stojanovic as Wendy and Harry Butcher and Flynn Dale as her little brothers, John and Michael. GSODA will present Peter Pan – The British Musical as part of its 50th anniversary of fostering young performers in Geelong. The not-for-profit company, whose former members include Guy Pearce, Peter ColemanWright and The Voice’s Jackson Thomas, will celebrate its halfcentury year with events including a Golden Gala and a reunion and family day in August. GSODA said its Peter Pan would be at GPAC from 20 to 27 June.

PIRATES, lost boys, fairies, crocs and clocks – the JM Barrie classic Peter Pan remains a theatre, literature and cinema favourite. Geelong’s youthful thespians are revisiting the ever-delightful Neverland fantasy, with Pan, his buccaneering nemesis Captain Hook, Wendy, Tiger Lily and their adventures on land and sea in a show to be staged this month. With Debbie Fraser as director, Emily Donoghue overseeing the vocals and Meagan Reid and Elly Gardiner handling choreography, GSODA Junior Players will use Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) to present the classic story of the boy who never wanted to grow up.

a delicious slow-cooked meal, available from 5pm to 8.30pm. Head chef Shane Rowe has used all of his 25 years’ experience to put together an extensive and thoughtful modern Australian a la carte menu. Jokers On Ryrie also offer a handy movie meal deal, so convenient with the cinema across the road, which also makes a great gift idea. The main menu is all glutenfree, with mouth-watering dishes like braised lamb shank and a 300g porterhouse served with roasted root vegetables on offer.
Seafood lovers can feast on classic King George Whiting or seared scallops wrapped in prosciutto and served with a cauliflower puree. For something a little different, Chef Rowe has created chicken saltimbocca and twice-cooked crispy-skin pork belly dishes. Mr Rafael Acosta - Rojas* Hand Surgery. Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. MBBS, FRACS, FEBOPRAS
Early help key to hand issues dupuytren’s disease
Treatments for hand conditions 1186192-ACM23-15
• dupuytren’s disease • congenital conditions • carpal tunnel / ulnar tunnel • sports injuries • osteoarthritis of the thumb and hand • trauma
EARLY treatment is the key to success for new non-surgical treatments of hand conditions, according to Australian Skin Face Body consultant Rafael AcostaRojas. The plastic and hand surgeon has been successfully treating patients non-surgically for conditions such as Dupuytren’s contracture, carpal tunnel and osteoarthritis. “We’re administering collagenase injections under ultrasoundguided nerve blocks to successfully treat Dupuytren’s disease in a pain-free manner” Mr AcostaRojas says. “It’s a relatively new treatment for adults, assisting with releasing the contracture, giving back improved movement of the finger or fingers. “There’s no incision and generally in one to two days after the
Australian Skin Face Body consulting surgeon Rafael AcostaRojas. injection the contractures are corrected. Physiotherapy is then undertaken to ensure the best result. Mr Acosta-Rojas says the earlier that progressive conditions such as Dupuytren’s can be diagnosed, the less likely they are to require an invasive solution. “It is important to go to your
GP and have your condition assessed as soon as symptoms occur.” Mr Acosta-Rojas commonly treats sports injuries to fingers, the severity of which determines the appropriate treatment. He gives presentations at medical conferences around the world and works with GPs throughout Victoria to provide patients with the latest techniques and procedures in microsurgery. Mr Acosta-Rojas, a qualified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, also has a special interest in reconstruction microsurgery of the breast, including post-cancer reconstruction following mastectomy. Patients require a referral from their GP for appointments with Mr Acosta-Rojas at Australian Skin Face Body, 50 Western Beach Road, Geelong VIC 3220.

Looking good the Firm way AUSTRALIAN Institute of Health and Welfare statistics show that Australia faces a major health crisis, with three out of five people either overweight or obese. Both present serious health consequences such as increased risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease, all of which are preventable. The team at The Firm Slimming & Health Clinic has over 20 years’ experience helping people lose weight, tone muscles and reduce the appearance of cellulite. Electrotherapy plays a crucial part in their program, helping firm and tone muscles. This noninvasive treatment is an excellent way to reshape the body and for centimetre loss. It’s also a safe, painless alternative to surgery or drugs, achieving rapid results with no recovery

Total care for Geelong feet PREVENTION rather than cure is much more than just a slogan at Manifold Podiatry & Myotherapy. Dr Simone Leembruggen says the clinic seeks out the cause of any foot-related problems rather than just treating the symptom. “When people come in we look at the whole person and look at the cause of an issue, looking at why the problem has arisen,” Dr Leembruggen explains. “Then we look at how to prevent it, to enable people to keep doing the things they love doing for as long as they can. “We want to inspire people to value their feet. Feet are important - what would we do without them?” Dr Leembruggen says education and empowering people to look after feet and prevent problems is the key. “We talk to clients about understanding what a good shoe is, how to fit shoes properly to make sure people are wearing the right shoes. “So often we see people wearing the wrong size footwear.” Dr Leembruggen says that if clients return with a similar problem the underlying cause has not been resolved. “We fully address the problem

Dentists can help patients choose the right material for their particular requirements, with each type of veneer having its own benefits. Porcelain veneers are a thin shell custom-made to fit on individual teeth. They are strong and longer-lasting compared to composite resin veneers, do not stain easily and have a natural-looking surface. Composite resin veneers are made from a tooth-coloured filling material bonded to the tooth.
The benefits of resin veneers include the usual removal of less tooth enamel, lower cost than porcelain, potentially fewer followup visits to the dentists and easier repairs if damaged. Norlane Dental Surgery can prepare quick mock-ups to show patients how veneers will look on their teeth As with all your dental care, the surgery advises all patients to discuss expectations and treatment options with their dentists. Norlane Dental Surgery is always available to discuss treatment options with patients.

DENTAL veneers are a simple option to improve smiles. The veneers are thin coverings placed over the visible part of front teeth, achieving a natural appearance. Veneers can be used to correct a wide range of dental issues, such as: teeth that are stained and cannot be whitened by bleaching; chipped or worn teeth; crooked or misaligned teeth; and uneven spaces or a large gaps between upper or lower front teeth.
FOOT & Leg Pain Clinics, one of Australia’s leading musculoskeletal podiatry practices, is having enormous success assisting pain, injuries and degenerative concerns such as osteoarthritis. The clinics offer expert help for: heel, arch, shin and knee pains; plantar fasciitis; ankle and Achilles issues; bunions; arthritis; injuries; and growing pains. Foot & Leg Pain Clinics have successfully assisted tens of thousands of patients of all ages and lifestyles, from children to leading athletes and seniors. The clinics’ holistic approach and evidence-based treatment plans are aimed at putting a permanent end to foot and leg pain. Renowned for successful patient outcomes without medications or surgery, Foot & Leg Pain Clinics’ services have assisted people with long-term complaints and others told elsewhere that nothing could be done for them. Musculoskeletal podiatrist Dr David Kavanagh, who heads the Geelong clinic at Belmont, says healing is not “a one-size-fits-all approach”. “We achieve consistent, successful and long-term outcomes
Help is available in Geelong for permanent relieve of foot and leg pain. for patients because we take an individual approach considering patients’ lifestyle, overall health and injury concerns, nutritional status and requirements and we spend time finding and addressing the cause of concerns and not just treating the symptoms,” Dr Kavanagh says. “We also take a holistic approach, keep up-to-date with the latest medical research and
treatments and have expertise in regenerative therapies such as prolotherapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP).“ Appointments at the Belmont clinic are available by phoning 1300 328 300. Anyone mentioning this article when booking receives $50 off their initial consultation.

YMCA Geelong is inviting local seniors and their families to celebrate the YMCA’s 171st birthday tomorrow. Now 62 itself, the Geelong branch is offering activities for all ages as the international organization celebrates the birthday milestone during June. YMCA Geelong chief Shona Eland says it’s all about promoting “healthy, happy and connected communities”. “Join in our celebrations and become part of the Y family,” she says. George Williams founded the
YMCA in England during a period of significant hardship, with the organisation arriving in Australia in 1851 on the back of the gold rush. A charitable, not-for profit incorporated association, the YMCA has always had a focus on providing activities for young people but now also offers seniors programs to keep participants active and health. “To find out how you can join in the activities, call the Geelong centre on 5221 8344,” Shona says. Through our programs and
services to the greater Geelong region we provide the community with an opportunity to be healthier, happier and connected. Seniors can also encourage the involvement of their grandchildren, who can be as young as pre-school-age. “Our sports programs include basketball, gymnastics, cheerleading, trampolining and judo,” Shona says. YMCA Geelong is at 25 Riversdale Rd, Newtown. More information about the centre’s activities and other facilities in the region is available at geelong.ymca.org.au.

THE TEAM at Bupa Bellarine is passionate about providing personalised care for residents by tailoring its approach to meet their individual needs and preferences. Bupa’s Person First care strategy is also extended to residents’ relatives and community members caring for people with dementia. The aged care home has set up a support group that provides a supportive, caring environment for carers to come together and share their experiences with each other while the trained employees offer their expertise on caring for dementia sufferers. The group meets once a month at Bupa Bellarine where they either hear from a guest speaker or go out on Bupa’s bus for afternoon tea. Bupa Bellarine team member Wendy Batty has received dementia-expertise training and organises the monthly gatherings. “The gatherings provide members with an outlet to openly discuss how they are feeling and how they have overcome some of the challenges they may have faced during the past month,” Wendy explains. “It’s all about connecting people experiencing similar things to let them know that they’re not

Pip Walker inspects progress on the latest stage of works at Torquay’s Star of the Sea.
THE FINAL stage of the exciting Villa Maria Catholic Homes development, Star of the Sea Retirement Village, is selling quickly with only a limited number of units left. Stage five is the culmination of the $24 million 90-bed Star of the Sea community in Torquay. Sales manager Pip Walker says it’s an exciting time, seeing the original vision finally come to fruition. “Over recent months we’ve had an overwhelming response, with people keen to join the active, vibrant community within the village,” she says. Time is still available to secure
one of the luxurious two or threebedroom units, starting as low as $465,000 and due for completion around September. Once construction of stage five is complete, work will commence on the aged care facility, co-located with the retirement village. Star of the Sea Village will be able to expand its service offering to include a fully integrated ageingin-place system supported by Home Care Packages. An ageing-in-place system provides a wonderful opportunity for village residents to seamlessly tran-
sition from retirement living to aged care. Independent living is combined with lifestyle activities and access to first-class facilities including an indoor heated pool, a gym, a movie theatre, outdoor bowls, billiards, a library and a hair salon. Star of the Sea Village welcomes people from diverse cultures, nationalities and faiths. Star of the Sea Village is open for inspection at 1 Headland Dve, Torquay. CAR SERVICES, brake checks, fixing clutches getting these jobs done quickly, efficiently and easily requires a solid handful of essentials. One is location, or being able to get to and from the mechanic shop readily. Another is quick access by the mechanic shop to spare parts, which can readily trim a day off the wait for a car’s return. A third consideration is quality work, the fourth is friendly extra care and the fifth is courtesy pick-up and drop-off. Geelong Brake and Clutch’s Denis and Lesley Williams have made meeting each of these points articles of faith at their South Geelong, business. Their clients don’t have to fight city traffic to get to them. Expert advice and product knowledge for all makes and models of vehicles – including off-road and heavy duty vehicles – makes GBC an easy choice. Superior customer service and care is the icing on the cake. GBC offers: brake rotors and pads plus rotor machining; drum brake kits and machining; clutch replacement kits and flywheel machining; and an extensive range of suspension parts; driveshaft replacement kits; and a brake and clutch hose fabrication service, all covering most vehicle makes and models including commercial vehicles and 4WDs. “We have a large range of brake and clutch parts usually on hand, making us quicker, easier to access and we take extra care of our customers,” Lesley says. “We go the extra mile to make people realise that they are important to us. And safety is the key issue too, as we all use the road”. “We‘re also happy to do no-obligation quotes.” Geelong Brake and Clutch is at 8 Dowsett St, phone 5222 7411.

A crossover between a hatch and an SUV might be just what many buyers are asking for - indeed, Mazda CX-3 has been selling its wheels off since it was launched in March. Styling is obviously a major factor in the big sales numbers, but the interesting size could also be playing its part. The familiar Mazda model names of Neo and Maxx are used for the CX-3, but are joined by two new ones. The upper-middle CX-3’s Touring and topline Akari complete the range. Pricing is highly competitive, starting at just $19,990 (plus onroads) for the 2WD petrol manual and going up to $37,690 for the topline Akari with AWD diesel with auto. We tested two autos, a 2WD Maxx petrol and an AWD Akari turbo-diesel. The CX-3 carries the latest iteration of the highly successful Mazda Kodo design language, with the usual large vertical grille and long bonnet. The front guards sweep up and over the wheels almost to the end of the front doors, where the wave-like shape is then picked up by the guards of the rear wheels. Inside there’s the latest Mazda instrument layout of a large central dial with rectangular pods on either side of it. It’s neat, compact and works well, but doesn’t have the sort of sporting twin-dial style of most in the segment. Information on the seven-inch centrally mounted display screen is accessed through a control knob handily placed on the centre console. Voice commands can be used to control audio functions, Bluetooth hands-free phone operation and reception of short text messages. There’s internet radio that can
receive something like 100,000 broadcasters. A head-up display, not on all models, shows vehicle speed and navigation directions. Mazda CX-3 offers the option of petrol or diesel power. The four-cylinder petrol has a capacity of 2.0 litres. The turbo-diesel is interesting in that it displaces just 1.5 litres and follows the latest European engineering trend of using small capacity, low friction engines aided by complex turbochargers for added power and torque. The power output of the petrol is 109 kW, the diesel puts out just 77 kW. But, it’s torque that talks and the diesel has an impressive 270 Nm between 1600 and 2500 revs. The petrol has 192 Nm, impressive for a non-turbo engine of this size, even better the petrol reaches its best torque at a very usable 2800 rpm. Mazda Australia is offering both 2WD (front drive) and AWD CX-3s to Australia. This is increasingly unusual in this SUV class as many are now coming with drive only to two wheels. Six-speed manual or automatic transmissions are offered, but the manual only comes with the front-wheel-drive petrol-engine combination. The local importer feels that some owners will still want the added traction of all-wheel-drive for use in slippery conditions, such as in snowfields. Some may even tackle mild off-road areas such as forestry trails. But don’t get too ambitious, though… Australasian crash testing has yet to be carried out, but Mazda is confident its new CX-3 will receive the maximum rating of five stars. Mazda CX-3’s seats are well shaped and there’s a fair amount of space in the back seat for a vehicle in this class. However, children rather than adults will be the more comfortable in the rear. Keep in mind this is a smallish SUV and something has to be compromised in interior space. Luggage space is good for a car of this size and the two-level-
floor option is clever. A simple design of head-up display is fitted on upmarket models and works reasonably well, but isn’t as good as the fullon HUD systems being used by others. Having said that, the Mazda readout doesn’t disappear as soon as you put on polarising sunglasses, a plus from my point of view. Mazda CX-3 is particularly quiet and smooth on good road surfaces, especially on motorways. On typical Aussie backroads it still has a degree of comfort that’s not always the norm in this class. Handling is good with a reasonably neutral feel till you try to attack corners in a sporting manner, when safe understeer settles down the driver’s ambitions. The little Mazda’s slightly higher than average seating position makes for easier ingress and egress than a lowset hatchback, but getting in and out isn’t as simple as in competitors like Ford Kuga and Holden Trax. Similarly, while there’s a better view of the traffic ahead from the Mazda, you don’t get the same benefits as are offered by taller wagons. The CX-3’s petrol engine is responsive and is never intrusive. Its fuel consumption around town was in the eight to 10 litres per 100 kilometres range during our test. On country roads and motorways getting it below seven litres was pretty easy with a bit of care in driving. During our initial drives at the media launch of the Mazda CX-3 out of Canberra we commented that the turbo-diesel was a little slow off the line. Our test car this week was noticeably better, perhaps because it had more miles under its wheels and was run in. The strong diesel torque and responsive automatic transmission made for easy hillclimbing and safe overtaking. Diesel fuel usage was about six to eight litres per 100 in suburban and city use, dropping to high fours to mid fives in the country. Mazda CX-3’s strong styling and good pricing have seen it jump to the front of the field in its class.

Snapper plus for anglers offshore TIME RUNNING OUT: Injury-riddled Cats Nathan Vardy, Daniel Menzel and Hamish McIntosh. Pictures: REG RYAN
Cats ‘to cull big injury list as cost hits $2.5m’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG faces tough decisions at the end of the season on its lengthy list of long-term injured players, according to Cats chief Brian Cook. He said the club could no longer afford to carry so many players unable to take the field. The club’s 12 players with long-term injuries of at least two months cost “around $2.5 million out of a $9 million payroll”, Cook told a Geelong Business Breakfast last week. “What we’ve learned over time is that we can’t carry the injuries that we have. “It’s been a perfect storm. Last year we had over 20 injuries.” The Cats have carried Nathan Vardy, Daniel Menzel and Josh Cowan with a series of serious injuries for up to three years. The injury list also includes Jimmy Bartel (4-6 weeks) Mitch Duncan (10-12 weeks) Lincoln McCarthy (indefinite) Cameron Delaney (indefinite) Hamish McIntosh (4-6 weeks) and Billie Smedts (4-6 weeks). Cook said the long injury list came at a time when the club was in transition. “It’s been in transition for four or five or six years and each year we’ve had a changeover of four or five or six but no more. “But I think it’s probably got to the stage where at the end of this year you’ll see as much change in our list as there has been in the last decade or so.” Cook said continually finding top-up players had added to the cost. “Our older players haven’t changed and our list management is very challenging. If you put all that together I think you’ll find that there’ll be a lot of change at the end of this year.” Cook said the future of the club was reliant on its injury rehabilitation, older players holding form and 50-game players improving. Keeping club leaders, Joel Selwood, Tom Hawkins and Harry Taylor on the field and moulding recruits Mitch Clark and Rhys Stanley into the squad was essential, he said. The club would seek midfielders and defenders to replace anticipated retirees over the next two to three years. Cook also said the increasing popularity of women’s football would lead the Cats to consider establishing a team for women in 2017 or 2018.
Chris Scott emphasised the importance of beating Essendon this week.

Battle of battlers ‘crucial to season’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG meets fellow struggler Essendon at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night in what could be a season defining game for both clubs. Separated on the ladder by only percentage, both sides suffer lengthy injury lists including key players, the Bombers this week missing inspirational captain Jobe Watson. Both sides have had topsy turvy seasons of meritorious wins mixed in with shockers.
Essendon has only one win in its past four games - against lowly Brisbane – but without a thrashing like Geelong suffered last weekend. Coach Chris Scott conceded the Essendon game was important. “It’s not right to say it’s just another game,” he said. “When you tend to be midseason and in the middle of the ladder every game becomes crucial.
“If you can take a game away from teams near you and get one yourself it makes a big difference.” Geelong and Essendon will turn the clock back with a VFL curtain-raiser on Saturday. Fans can see two games for the price of one in a formerly commonplace schedule that has become increasingly rare with reserves teams usually playing at a different venues to their AFL affiliates.
ADRIAN Cole and Mark Sesar ventured out in calm conditions off Barwon Heads last week. After anchoring in 40m and baiting up with fresh squid and mackerel, they soon boated a 5kg snapper. The pair managed another four fish from 2kg to 4kg over the next few hours. After lunch they changed tactics, drifting out an unweighted barracouta fillet among the berley trail, adding a 3kg kingfish to their catch. Fishing the late afternoon they ended the day with a 25kg seven gill shark to their impressive bag of fish. Surf Coast anglers experienced outstanding fishing for Australian salmon from rocks and beaches. Bancoora and 13th beaches produced fish to 2.5kg, with quality rather than quantity the rule. Clifton Springs held large numbers of squid. Drifting slowly over the grass beds in 3m to 4m resulted in bag-limit captures. The nearby spoil ground fished well for pinkie snapper, with anglers casting soft plastics boating fish to 45cm. Wild weather last weekend prompted some anglers to seek shelter at Queenscliff Harbour, where casting soft plastics such as Z-Man grubs caught silver trevally to 40cm. The last two hours of the run-in tide fished best. Tony Hynds travelled to Lake Tyres where he caught and released a trophy-size 90cm dusky flathead. Tony caught his big frog on a small black and orange vive intended for bream. Freshwater enthusiasts made the journey to the Eucumbene and Thredbo rivers, where large wellconditioned brown trout are usually migrating to spawn at this time of year. Andrew Orchard fished the Thredbo, banking numerous brown trout and a massive 4.2kg Atlantic salmon on a hard-body lure. Brian Long and John Mole spent a few days fishing the Eucumbene River and surrounding areas. Casting flies, they caught numerous brown trout to 3kg, with John landing a well-coloured buck. The pair noted that angler numbers were high along the Eucumbene, with most fishing shoulder-to-shoulder. Tristian Lake cast Fish Arrow soft plastics along the rock wall at Wurdi Boluc Reservoir on the weekend, eventually catching 46cm, 1.9kg redfin. Rainbow and brown trout were also caught at the reservoir, with mudeye suspended under a float the number-one method. Frankie Pucek fished the banks of Lake Wendouree last weekend, landing buck rainbow trout of 45cm. Frankie’s success came from fishing mudeye under a float and being persistent in rough conditions. Anglers should make the most of the bluefin tuna down the coast if the weather holds out over the next week. Trolling Rapala X-raps or casting stick bait lures should catch fish to 20kg, with 48m of water off Lady Julia Percy Island a great place to start searching. Closer to home, St Leonards should offer productive whiting fishing, while trout anglers could try Lake Purrumbete or Wurdi Boluc Reservoir with mudeye under a float.
Warriors welcome cup focus after 1-7 NPL thrashing By JOSIP ZILIC A WEEKEND away from NPL duties and a focus on the FFA Cup round-six match against South Springvale might be just what North Geelong Warriors need after a dismal 7-1 loss to league champion South Melbourne. But the FFA task won’t be easy, with North Geelong’s confidence bruised and South Springvale in good form. The Warriors will need to be at their best to continue their good cup form so far. Micky Colina’s men would have been buoyed with a half-time score against South Melbourne of 1-0, largely due to Daniel Zilic’s heroics in goals and with the only score resulting from a wicked deflection off Michael Grgic. However, the Warriors offered little in the way of resistance in the second half as South Melbourne ran riot. Man of the match Nick Epifano shell shocked the Warriors, setting up Leigh Minopoulos and Andy
SLIP SLIDIN’ AWAY: The Warriors’ Stipe Trbuhovic desparately tries to clear the lines. Picture: IVAN DUGANDZIC Brennan with quick goals in the 50th and 55th minutes. Not ready to stop there, Epifano again split the Warriors apart in the 62nd minute with a decisive ball to Andy Kecojevic who had just come onto the park to punish North with South’s fourth of the night.
With 10 minutes left and the match running out of steam, the Warriors were again caught out when Minopoulos turned playmaker, sending Chris Irwin through to slide a ball past Zilic. The rout continued with Minopoulos securing his brace on 85 minutes when he received a ball unmarked at the back post to bundle it in for South’s sixth. North Geelong’s only impact came when Gareth Richards was upended in the box for skipper Matt Townley to score from the spot. To rub salt into the Warriors’ already large wound, South’s last kick of the match scored its seventh goal courtesy of Iqbal Jawadi, who slotted the ball past Zilic after controlling it on the edge of the area. After the match North Geelong coaches and players sent an apology to the faithful, taking responsibility for the forgettable night and vowing never again to expose fans to a similar performance.
OFFSHORE: Mark Sesar and Adrain Cole with some of their snapper, caught off Barwon Heads.
