Grant takes centre stage for his curtain call honour...
2015
Show stopper By LACHLAN MOORHEAD
1170560-ACM06-15
AFTER performing in his Grade 3 play, Grant Alley’s drama teacher told him he might be better suited behind the stage rather than acting on it. Now for close to half a century the 64-year-old Keysborough man has been a member of the community theatre company CLOC, formerly known as the Cheltenham Light Opera Company. Having served as president, treasurer and technical director of CLOC – involved with the group for 46 years – Grant will be officially recognised today (Monday) with a Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to the performing arts. Grant didn’t finished his university course in accounting and computer science and said he always wanted letters after his name – now he has them. “I started getting involved in theatre back in Grade 3 at school,” Grant said, who started building sets when he was 10. “For once in my life I performed on stage and at the end my teacher suggested I design and build the sets instead. “So I started doing that.” Grant joined the Cheltenham Light Opera Company as a member of its production team in 1969, when he was 18. He has overseen the company which began with a budget of $600 and now operates on at least $300,000 per show. Theatre, Grant said with adoration, is like a fatal disease – “you can’t escape it”. “There’s something about theatre that is all encompassing,” he said. “It’s challenging and demanding and hard but enormously satisfying, bringing joy for the public and those involved with it.” Grant, who keeps a part of all the
sets he makes, gave up his job as an executive at Coles Myer in 2003 to be able to focus full-time on his volunteering at CLOC, where he was president for 15 years. As technical director Grant is responsible for every technical design of every show – with the company staging two productions a year – but despite his dedication to CLOC, Grant admits he was still “gobsmacked” to learn he had been an awarded an OAM. “You watch people get accolades on stage and this award is great recognition, not just me but for all those other people pushing the buttons behind the scenes,” he said. And while Grant has seen many other community theatre companies fall by the wayside, he is determined to ensure CLOC remains a viable entity for decades to come. “I’m focused on moving the company into a stable position, getting backing, and making it into something that’s going to move forward and survive,” he said. “As part of that I stood down from the president’s role to become treasurer to appoint a younger person to take over that role, who I can mentor.” Former Dandenong RSL Club stalwart James Banks, who now lives in NSW, was also among those honoured on the Queen’s Birthday. He was awarded an OAM for his service to veterans and their families. James was a long-time member of the Dandenong RSL Club and part of the club’s bowls committee from 1967 to 1986. Two Greater Dandenong firies were also honoured with Australian Fire Service Medals. For their stories turn to pages 5 and 8.
Grant Alley has been recognised for his backstage work. “There’s something about theatre, you can’t escape it,” he says. 140038

Judge urges police to support accused By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A JUDGE has successfully pleaded with police not to press for a criminal record against a man who gatecrashed a 50th birthday party in Noble Park and struck a patron with a tree branch. “Are we so sanctimonious that he doesn’t deserve a second chance,”presiding magistrate Jack Vandersteen told police prosecutors at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. “(He’s) very young. As parents, it could be one of our kids one day.” Police agreed, allowing the magistrate to order him to be assessed for diversion and avoid a criminal record. The 18-year-old Narre Warren accused had been drinking vodka with mates in Melbourne’s CBD, lost his admission ticket to a soccer match and tried to get home by train on 7 February, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on Monday 1 June.
He disembarked in Noble Park, got into an altercation with an “aggressive” group of males and armed himself with two branches from a wheelbarrow. Police prosecutor Constable Ryan Johnson said the accused later swung the branches as he entered a private birthday party at Noble Park RSL. After striking a patron with a branch, the accused was cornered and “overpowered” by other guests, Const Johnson said. In the scuffle, the victim’s shoulder was reportedly dislocated - though the accused’s lawyer questioned the lack of medical evidence. The victim also suffered a small cut under his right eye and abrasions to his right arm and leg. The accused, who wrote a letter of apology to the victim, faced a single count of unlawful assault with weapons. Const Johnson said the accused
was co-operative, apologetic and regretful during a police interview. The man’s lawyer told the court that the “disoriented” accused didn’t normally drink, had no idea why he disembarked at Noble Park station and had retreated to the RSL subbranch for “safety”. Armed with glowing references for the accused, the lawyer pleaded for diversion on the basis of his youth, no prior criminal history and overcoming serious physical and sexual abuse as a child. If rejected, the recorded offence would dent the man’s ambitions to help domestic abuse victims as a youth worker, and “undo some of the good work he’s done”, the lawyer said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he would not take into account the shoulder injury because police withdrew the relevant charge. The magistrate pleaded with police to drop their opposition, so he
could place the accused on diversion. “You cannot underestimate the impact of the things (he’s) gone through,” Mr Vandersteen said to police prosecutors. “His father was threatening to kill the mother with a knife... it’s remarkable he’s come as far as he has.” He said it was ironic that police had supported the family, particularly the mother, as domestic violence victims in the past, yet not in this case. Police prosecutor Sergeant Andrew Gannon said the accused was unsuitable because it was an unprovoked attack at a family function at a licensed premises. But after an interval, police dropped their opposition - despite three police prosecutors initially rejecting diversion. The accused will be assessed for diversion later this month.
Staff in God’s hands as shop closes By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A DANDENONG shop that has been selling Christian books since 1977 has closed its doors for the last time. Glenys, from Word in Langhorne Street, said the convenience of online shopping had forced the bricks and mortar store onto the web. “Everything’s changed in the world. Right across the board it seems to be the world trend and the trend most customers prefer, but our customers don’t want to, they prefer coming in,” she said. “People are terribly upset and sad. The shop has been in Dandenong for 38 years.” Glenys said the store’s inspirational Christian-based books, CDs, DVDs, giftware, Bibles and books to help understand different faiths was the best literature in Dandenong. “All our books have beautiful messages,” she said. “This place is like a home for people, I treat them as if I was home and welcome them. “I’ve bought some seats so there’s somewhere for them to sit and sometimes they need a cuppa and if they’re not feeling well I’ll get them a glass of water. “We love our customers, we re-

Glenys said the store has had many success stories since it originally opened in Mason Street, Dandenong. “Often we have people come in and speak about their personal and private stories and I’m privileged to hear them and be a part of their confidence - I’m going to miss my beautiful customers,” she said. Three part time workers have lost
their job but full-timer Glenys said she is not worried about the future with the closure of the shop on Saturday 30 May. “I’ll look for another job but the difference is when you know God is in control of your life, you know you haven’t been abandoned and that God is going to lead you onto another chapter. “We’ve always called it God’s shop, I caretake and I’ve got a manager but it’s God’s shop and it

A DRAMATIC citizen’s arrest by a group of community crusaders has led to a police raid in Dandenong where stolen property and a double edged sword were seized. Residents saw a man acting suspiciously outside an Alysha Avenue property in Lyndhurst just after noon on Saturday 30 May and restrained him until police arrived and took over. Two of the man’s accomplices fled the scene, one driving off in a white Toyota Hiace van. The arrest led to a police raid on a Dandenong property that night where detectives found stolen items and a double edged sword. The Dandenong man, 22, has been charged in relation to residential and commercial burglaries, including the theft from a Subway in Narre Warren last month, and carrying out an indictable offence while on bail. He has also been charged with drugs and weapons offences. Police also said he was in possession of stolen house keys. Detective Senior Constable Daniel Jacobi said residents had been on the lookout for suspicious behaviour after a number of burglaries in Lyndhurst over the previous fortnight in which a white van was thought to be involved. They had also set up a Facebook page to alert the community. He said a resident had seen a man acting suspicious near a white van on Saturday and had contacted others to help confront and restrain him. While Det Sen Const Jacobi welcomed the arrest, he warned the community against vigilantism. “We don’t really want people to do this sort of thing,” he said. “We’d prefer they would call police because we don‘t know how the offender is going to act towards them, but in this case everyone is OK and it’s a good result.” It’s believed the driver of the van, also thought to be involved in the thefts, is Asian with a solid build and aged in his mid-20s, and was wearing brown tracksuit pants and a brown hoodie at the time.
wouldn’t have gone unless it was right.” Glenys said the bookshop had always had an online presence, but customers will no longer get personalised assistance. “It’s just pick a book, press a button and put it in the basket. “We sort of know the stock and can guide customers in specific situations to the appropriate material and they won’t have that online.”

Burger gut feeling shoots for the hipsters By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THERE seems to be a sudden appetite for hipster in Springvale. Alex Vuong and chef John Liu had a gut feel that their youthful ‘ItalianAustralian’ burger restaurant Cultural Commons would be a breath of fresh air among a glut of Vietnamese and Chinese eateries. “We’re getting a lot of people saying they’ve been waiting for a long time for something like this in their neighbourhood,” Mr Vuong said. The hit dish has been the soft-shell crab burgers served with beer-battered chips and aioli. More than 1500 have been devoured since the restaurant opened in February. It’s a lighter meal than a beef patty and is a revelation for diners who are
Eat local, dinE global used to prying apart crab shells, Mr Vuong said. The 180-gram grass-fed-beef burgers have also been a popular choice. “We just got into this at the right time – burgers are starting to pick up in the food industry,” Mr Vuong said. Mr Vuong had learnt the trade at his parents’ Chinese-style roast duck and pork restaurant. When it closed in 2013, Mr Vuong and Mr Liu leapt at the chance of starting afresh on the same premises.
“It’s very modern and hipstery for Springvale – we wanted to target the younger crowd,” Mr Vuong said. “I realised Springvale is changing very dramatically and there’s a shortage of Western food. There needed to be more variety.” He said his parents Tong and Connie, who had run successful eateries in Victoria Street and Springvale, were initially sceptical of the ‘fusion’ venture. “They didn’t know which audience we were targeting. Now they’re all smiles.” Cultural Commons at 12 Queens Avenue, Springvale, is open from 11am to 10pm from Tuesday to Friday and 9am to 10pm on Saturday and Sunday. Phone 8555 2343.

The first annual report of the branch states
that 100 families have been welcomed and given advice. Families in distress have been given assistance at the rate of about one a month. The area for visiting covers Clayton, Springvale and Noble Park. In many cases, after the first visit, we have found the greatest problem is that of loneliness of housewives. Seeking help in its work the committee stated it needed the co-operation of every organisation. 20 years ago 12 June 1995 Uni passes Test THE U3A Dandenong has enjoyed a very successful first year. The number of members has grown rapidly, the range of courses increased and the group is financially sound. University president Max Oldmeadow, who is

5 years ago 7 June 2010 JAYCO to add 150 jobs with 87M caravan production line A massive $7 million expansion has triggered a jobs explosion at Dandenong South caravan manufacturing giant Jayco. The requirement for additional factory space is due to the high demand for recreational vehicles and subsequent increase in production volumes. Opportunities for full-time jobs were available for skilled and unskilled workers, including general labourers, electricians, plumbers and furniture assemblers. - Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

Russ fired on by tradition By Cam Lucadou-Wells IT’S fitting that Dandenong CFA life member and Springvale resident Russell Gray has joined his dad’s esteemed ranks by being awarded an Australian Fire Service Medal. In childhood, Mr Gray would sneak into the back of his father Deputy Chief Officer Peter Gray’s car at night to see first-hand how fireys tackle blazes. He would absorb and later mirror his father’s “hands-on” style, taking home and carefully tinkering and refining equipment such as hose nozzles. His father was the first Victorian to be awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal - an award that Mr Gray has also at-
tained in today’s Queen’s Birthday honours list. Mr Gray, 65, who is still active as a trainer in the CFA, describes the medal as “the pinnacle”. “These things are usually instigated by your peers. “You don’t think about these things during your work. You just do the best job you can.” His award recognises his 43 years of diligent service, his willingness to develop others and “uncompromising thoroughness” in product-testing equipment. Mr Gray - who describes himself as “more practical than theoretical” - has headed working groups that tested and recommended hose nozzles, hoses and fire truck designs.
He has never been shy to point out product flaws to a grateful brigade or manufacturer. “I was born into a fire brigade family,” Mr Gray said. “That was all we spoke about. “I’d see all this equipment being brought home to fix. I’d watch what (Peter) did - he’d pull things apart, mend the hoses and sew them. He paid tribute to the “just get on with it”, practical mentors in the brigade such as engineer and foreman Ken Talbot. One of Mr Gray’s proudest achievements is coaching Dandenong CFA to three state simulated fire-run titles in four years; his regret was that Mr Talbot didn’t live to see it.
Invoices used in cover up bid A DISGRACED former Education Department director has told an anti-corruption inquiry that he remains good friends with Chandler Park Primary School’s suspended principal Peter Paul. Nino Napoli stood accused at the Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission (IBAC) hearing of running a $2.5 million ‘banker school’ fraud ring that funnelled away Education Department funds much of which went to his relative’s companies.
On the stand at the County Court of Victoria in William Street, Melbourne, Mr Napoli said he sent two backdated letters to Chandler Park Primary School to “protect the principal”. One referred to a $90,000 student resource package component dated 2012 to employ a member staff. He was asked why Mr Paul did not complain to superiors about receiving “obviously backdated” letters. “Well, I knew Peter pretty
well,” Mr Napoli said. “I don’t know whether he knew that (they were) suspect invoices but he knew that a whole stack of activity was being paid from his school.” When questioned about Mr Paul and the school’s business manager Mary Hannett being “fairly well rewarded” with overseas trips paid by the Education Department, Mr Napoli said: “They did fairly well, I would say.” The hearing continues.

Smash spree By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN has been ordered to compensate victims for more than $5000 in damage and thefts after smash-and-grabbing from 10 cars in one night in Dandenong and Dandenong North. Troy Olierook pleaded guilty in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday after bloodstains linked him to each break-in on Herbert, Bruce and David streets in May 2014. During the heists, the fatherof-two grabbed items such as a wallet with $900 cash, a bag containing books and religious documentation, GPS systems, a radio, and sunglasses. In total, $2640 of goods were stolen with $3130 of claimed vehicle damage. He also pleaded guilty to possession of a machete found in his intercepted car in Doveton on 6 June 2014, which he claimed to police was to pro-
tect himself from “someone after him”. On 7 June, police found cannabis and amphetamine hidden in his car during an intercept in Dandenong. A full search uncovered two “gear bags” of ice weighing 22.6 grams in his underwear, police prosecutor Constable Troy Johnson told the court on Monday. Olierook’s lawyer said the accused had been “high” – and without recollection of his smash-and-grab spree. The accused now wanted to re-establish a timber flooring business since he was 21, following in the footsteps of his father’s success in the same industry. According to the lawyer, Olierook’s ice “experimentation” was set in train when his back was injured in a car crash and his business went bankrupt. Olierook was sentenced to
seven days’ jail for handling a stolen TV last year but because of a raft of belatedly-withdrawn charges had spent more than four months in pre-sentence detention. His prison time was a “period of forced abstinence” from ice and cannabis, his lawyer said. Since his release in March, he had been drug-free and has recently fathered a four-month girl. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Olierook’s drug offending predated the car crash, but took into account Olierook’s changed circumstances. Mr Vandersteen also considered the “dead time” spent in pre-sentence detention for “charges you haven’t been found guilty of”. He convicted and fined Olierook $2350 on top of ordering full restitution to the smashand-grab victims.
Two arrested after raid Murder charge nets heroin and cocaine POLICE seized a large haul of heroin and cocaine from a Springvale property last month. Detectives raided the Ellen Street house at 11am on Friday 29 May, seizing 115 grams of heroin, 85 grams of cocaine, two grams of methamphetamine and a quantity of cannabis. Two men were arrested at the scene, with one re-
leased on bail and one remanded in custody. Springvale Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Smart said the raid was a “good result”, with the seizure a “commercial quantity” of the drugs. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or visit www. crimestoppers.com.au.
POLICE have charged an 18-year-old man of no fixed address with murder following the suspicious death of a woman in Clayton South. Officers arrested Mataio Jordon Aleluia in Dandenong soon after a woman’s body was found in a car parked at Keeley Reserve about 3.30pm on 3 June. Paramedics were called to treat her but she could not be revived. Mr Aleluia appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court last Thursday, 4 June, where he was remanded in custody to return to court on 24 September.

KEYSBOROUGH’S Keith Pakenham has dedicated more than 30 years of his life to the CFA. His efforts were recognised with an Australian Fire Service Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List on 8 June. “It was a bit of a surprise. It wasn’t something I was expecting at all,” he said. “I accept it on behalf of a lot of CFA members who don’t get noticed. “I’m probably only noticed because I take the odd photo or two.” That’s quite the understatement – Mr Pakenham is the official CFA photographer and travels around Victoria to capture fires and incidents. He carried an old 35 millimetre camera in his turnout gear in the early days. “At the end of a fire I’d snap a few photos,” he said. “When everybody went home to sleep I’d start up the computer and go to the dark room.” He’d then drive to the Journal’s office in Walker Street in Dandenong with his notes and images, drive back home for 30 minutes’ sleep and head to work as an electronics engineer. “The CFA were the quiet achievers,” he said. “People would have no idea what was going on. “It was just a way of getting the story out there and letting people know what
we’d managed to achieve overnight.” Aside from his photography role, Mr Pakenham has served in a range of positions since being appointed as Apparatus Officer in 1991. He progressed through the officer ranks to become Noble Park Fire Brigade captain in 1999, a position he held until transferring to Dandenong in 2003 where he regularly fulfils crew or sector command roles. He received a National Medal and a National Emergency Medal for his dedicated efforts during the Black Saturday campaign. Mr Pakenham joined the CFA in 1984 after marrying and moving to Keysborough. “I was a member of St John Ambulance as a cadet,” he said. “I was looking to join another community organisation. I picked the CFA. “You become part of a new extended family. “Being in the CFA is interesting and exciting “You get involved in all sorts of things, not just bushfires.” Mr Pakenham said he’d seen more than his fair share of factories go up in smoke and had enjoyed travelling interstate and joining strike teams. On the lighter side, he helped to rescue a kitten from a wall cavity at the Sandown Hotel and freed
many people from locked toilets. He recalled one unlucky groom-to-be who was handcuffed to traffic lights on Princes Highway in Springvale at 3am while out on his buck’s night. “It was winter and he was a bit blue when we got him,” he said. “Someone called the police but they were good cuffs, even the police couldn’t undo them. “We had to come in with bolt cutters.” Through the laughs and the tragedies, Mr Pakenham’s wife Susan has supported him. “You cook tea and pop it on the table and say ‘tea’s ready’ and the pager goes off and he runs away for a few hours,” she said. Mr Pakenham interjected: “Our best friend is the microwave.” “He’s come home to a lot of cold dinners,” Mrs Pakenham said.

The Journal is trying to find Thomas Leonard Harris who was the first baby born at Dandenong Hospital after the town was proclaimed a city in March 1959. We’d also love to hear from others whose birth was featured in the pages of the Journal. Phone 5945 0666 or email journal@ starnewsgroup.com.au. FALSE alarm bells rang on Twitter with news of a possible bomb threat at the Department of Health and Human Services building on Thursday. Turns out it was just a drill but there was some collateral damage - caterers were unable to deliver lunch due to the lock-out. IT WAS one of those warm, fuzzy family affairs in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday. An accused man, who had just watched his brother being sentenced to jail, pleaded for the court’s mercy for his own vehicle-stealing case. There was some confusion over the accused’s criminal history though - that was before the court realised the reams of prior offences belonged to the accused’s father. For the record, he was disqualified from driving for six months, and ordered to per-
form 125 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12-month community corrections order.
THERE was another point of discomfort in the same court matter when the magistrate ordered the accused to provide an “intimate sample”. The magistrate, upon registering the accused’s anxiety, clarified that it involved swabbing inside the accused’s mouth for a DNA record.
DANDENONG police are remaining poker faced about their chances of catching bandits who burst in on an underground card game being held in a barber shop on 26 April. Two masked men - both wearing gloves and bandanas, and one wielding a shotgun - burst in through the back door of the Heatherton Road shop about 10pm yelling at the dozen poker players to get on the floor before stealing their cash. Most of the players fled out the front door of the store, but several others did as ordered and dropped to the ground. The raiders escaped out the back door with the pot. Anyone who can help police hold ’em should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

RE: Save our spaces plea In view of the ever-increasing number of multi-storey and multi-dwelling planning applications being approved and acted upon, there is also an everincreasing loss of open space. What has happened to the back yards where children of past generations were able to play safely and invite their friends? There appears to be major effort to direct children into passive passtimes and away from open-air pursuits. A casual look at the map

Giving spirit set to live on By CASEY NEILL
A DANDENONG businessman is honouring his late son’s memory by educating the poorest children in the Himalayas. Bruce Parker, a former commando who has run HM GEM Engines in Dandenong for 25 years, last week released Spirit High: The Mick Parker Story. Proceeds from the mountain climber’s biography will go to the new Michael Parker Foundation. “It’s about providing education for disadvantaged children, particularly in remote areas of Nepal and northern Pakistan and also Australia,” Bruce said. “On many occasions Michael gave away all of the money he had on him. “It’s a continuation of what his life’s work would have been about.” Michael scaled the world’s highest mountains without bottled oxygen, guides or Sherpas. He climbed nine of the world’s 14 peaks that are higher than 8000 metres - three of them twice. He died on 21 May in 2009 at age 36, shortly after reaching the summit of Makalu in the Himalayas. Bruce said he was climbing with the United Kingdom’s top mountaineer, Roland Hunter, and had a virus. “He passed out several times on the way into the mountain,” he said. “The weather was abhorrent and the remainder of the expedition decided to abandon the expedition but Michael and Roland decided to stay on for one more crack at the summit. “They had a very small window of opportunity so they pushed themselves very hard. “They were successful.”
Bruce Parker with a copy of Spirit High. 139039 They completed the five to sevenday descent in just two and a half. “Michael passed out several times during that walkout,” he said. They flew back to Kathmandu and celebrated at Sam’s Bar, where the owner tried to get a meal into him because “he looked absolutely terrible”. “At about 1.30am he left the bar,” Bruce said.
“His time of death was recorded as being 2am. “He died in his sleep.” Receiving the news was “probably the most difficult thing that I’ve ever experienced”. “The consolation – if there is a consolation - is that he died doing what he loved doing,” Bruce said. “He said to his mother and I on a

number of occasions that he was never, ever happier than when he was on a big mountain.” He said that unlike many other climbers, Michael had a lot of time for the locals. “Nepal’s probably one of the poorest countries in the world and he knew that education or lack of was the common denominator,” he said. “In those remote areas there are
very few schools and in villages where there are no schools basic education is carried out by the older people in the village and usually consists of a pointed stick with lessons scratched in the dirt. “He would use his own money to take those materials into some places when he went climbing. “He could see how they were received and he felt it made a big difference. “His intention was to do it on a bigger scale.” The Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation already works with Nepalese schools. “But the areas where the schools are, are not remote areas,” Bruce said. So the Michael Parker Foundation is working in conjunction with World Expeditions Foundation, which provides volunteers to supervise and help locals to build schools. The foundation will also support the Commando Welfare Trust, which Bruce and ex-commanding officer Graham Ferguson started in 2010 in the wake of a Black Hawk helicopter crash in Afghanistan. “A number of our commandos were killed and some seriously injured,” he said. “These soldiers’ dependents would be in a position where they would struggle as far as education is concerned. “We fill the gap where department of veteran’s affairs, or DVA, and Legacy don’t go. “They don’t pay school fees, for example. They might in certain circumstances stretch for a school uniform. “We provide the very best education for the kids because that’s what their dads could have done.” Visit michaelparkerfoundation.org. au to donate.

Brakes on skate park By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A LAST-MINUTE safety audit has indefinitely delayed Greater Dandenong Council’s keenly anticipated opening of a cutting-edge skate park in Noble Park. The $1-million-plus Ross Reserve skate park had been expected to open this month until concerns were raised last month about its cavernous vertical bowl. Last month, councillor Peter Brown insisted that the council launch an independent safety audit after inspecting what he described as a “massive” and “unprotected” six or seven metre drop into the bowl. “It will not be long before we have a dead body to deal with,” he warned council officers and councillors in an email. Cr Brown said last week that some treated his warnings as “alarmist” but there was “an obligation” on the council to restrict access to the bowl. “You don’t have a high tower dive at a pool unattended by
Councillor Peter Brown at the skate park. 140051 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS life guards. It’s the equivalent of that – except there’s no water, just concrete.” He said the council – which had completed an internal safety audit – would also launch a peer review and a safety assessment by Victoria Police to deter crimes such as graffiti. “I support the skate park but we as a council must establish the highest safety benchmarks for this facility.
“I don’t know how long it takes but it won’t be open until (the) council is satisfied.” Greater Dandenong council had described the park’s unique range of elements including a snake run and street course as suitable for pre-teens to over40s as well as skaters, BMX and scooter riders. The council’s engineering services director Julie Reid
said the depth of the skate park would be less than 3.5 metres. “The works are in still progress and the final project cost and date of opening are yet to be confirmed. “All safety precautions will be taken so far as reasonably practicable for a facility of this nature.” The skate park, co-designed by specialist skate park creator
Baseplate and skater legend Jon McGrath, is nevertheless anticipated to be a hit. Skateboarding Victoria president Bernie Griffiths predicted the skate park would be one of the most popular in the country, attracting skaters from interstate and overseas. “It’s because it’s got Jon McGrath’s name on it and there’s an enormous range of opportunities to have fun. “The design is right. It has the challenges that skaters are seeking and rivals St Kilda’s park – some of the snake run and bowl features are probably better than St Kilda.” Vice-president Nick Buskens said vertical bowls were designed for “high-end” professional skaters and spectacular competitions, though the overall park catered for all abilities. Last month, an unhelmeted 17-year-old boy died from a head injury at a Tasmanian skate ramp but casualties were uncommon, Mr Buskens said.
Women sentenced for attacking bus driver A NOBLE Park mother and daughter have been sentenced over an attack on a bus driver in Dandenong. Tahlya and Courtney Evans, aged 40 and 22, pleaded guilty to assault and damage charges in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 June over the 29 November incident. They punched, bit and spat on bus driver and father of five Faavae Tuiloma
as they disembarked at Dandenong Railway Station. Both received community corrections orders – Tahlya 18 months and Courtney 12 months – which will require them to complete treatment programs. Mr Tuiloma, 44, picked up the women at Dandenong Plaza Shopping Centre about 2.50pm. They failed to use their Myki cards when they boarded and Mr Tuiloma
asked them to pay the fare when the bus reached its destination. “All of a sudden she punched me in the chest. All of a sudden she ripped my shirt off. I just defended myself, pushing her,” he said last year. “The second time I pushed this big lady in the mouth I feel my thumb went straight in her mouth and she bit it. Mr Tuiloma said friends had asked why he let two women beat him up, and
said he had “a strong respect for women”. “I know I was injured but in my heart I’m glad I let them go,” he said. The women came forward on 15 December after police released CCTV footage of the incident and appealed for witnesses. IN BRIEF Multi-theft arrests
FOUR teenagers were arrested last month in relation to 40 thefts from cars in Noble Park and Keysborough. They are also believed to have stolen four cars, two of which are still missing. The group of boys, aged from 14 to 17, were arrested around 4am on Thursday 28 May, with two being remanded and two released on bail. The thefts took place throughout Noble Park and Keysborough in the last month. Keysborough Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Smart said the area had been getting “hit pretty hard” with theft of and theft from cars and commended his team on the results. Legal help for Centrelink aid PEOPLE running into Centrelink hurdles are eligible for free legal advice at Victoria Legal Aid’s Dandenong office. VLA commonwealth entitlements program manager Len Jaffit said many people didn’t realise they have the right to request a review of Centrelink decisions. “Many people struggle to understand Centrelink’s complex processes and legal help is important in helping them to examine all their options,” Mr Jaffit said. VLA regional managing lawyer Elissa Scott said the service was particularly important in Greater Dandenong, which has significant youth unemployment, large numbers of residents unfamiliar with English and a high percentage of people living with a disability. The advice can help clients under Centrelink investigation, charged with social security offences or when their benefits are reduced, refused or overpaid. In some cases, VLA lawyers have helped people who were unfairly asked to repay mistakenly overpaid benefits. “It helps to know your rights and options when you are notified of a Centrelink decision, especially if you think you’re been unfairly treated,” Ms Scott said. Legal advice is available at the Dandenong office from Monday to Friday. For an appointment, phone 9767 7111 or the multi-lingual help line on 1300 792 387.

BUDDING boffins can pursue their passion in purpose-built labs at Keysborough College. The school opened the Heather Lindsey STEM Centre at its Banksia Campus in Springvale South last Wednesday 3 June. The science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) building was named after the school’s first principal following the Springvale, Heatherhill, Coomoora and Chandler secondary college amalgamation in 2008. Campus principal Patrick Boyd said Ms Lindsey retired last year but was at the official opening and was thrilled. “I think that it’s very fitting that the founding principal of Keysborough College be remembered in such a way,” he said. “It was due to Heather’s great planning that we were able to raise the college funds to build the centre. “It was built through college funds only, there was no government money.” Mr Boyd said architects designed the centre with input from teachers and guidance from Monash University’s science faculty. “It was primarily designed for students who show a high interest and aptitude in maths and science,” he said. “We have a select-entry Year 10 course which offers students an inquiry-based science, technology and maths curriculum with application to real-life technology-based problems. “It’s very much a course where we’re building application rather than just straight knowledge.
Kevin and Angel test out the new STEM centre. 138958 Pictures: GARY SISSONS “We’ve taken the advice of our colleagues at Monash University and the course is designed to point students towards the STEM streams at university. “A lot of what we’re doing here is aimed to try and improve the uptake of girls to science, and in particular to engineering.” Mr Boyd said STEM was the way forward for Australia, particularly after the mining bubble burst. “We’re now looking to be rerecognised as a clever country and it’s certainly within these STEM ar-
eas that we are particularly clever,” he said. The centre includes two wet labs for senior chemistry, building and biochemistry and a dry lab for senior physics, robotics and electronic technologies. There’s also a space for information and communication technologies (ICT) and design, including game making and 3D printing. A large, flexible space for mathematics can seat up to 60 students and there is a theatrette for lectures. “It really is our best building so far,” Mr Boyd said.

HELEN Shaikhan is undaunted by cooking for large numbers of people. She and three other asylum seekers will be cooking up a multi-flavoured banquet of Sri Lankan, Burmese, Afghan and Iranian cuisine for this month’s inaugural Friends of Refugees awards. Ms Shaikhan, an Iranian-born asylum seeker, hopes to open a Persian restaurant - if granted permanent residency. She is currently barred from paid work due to her bridging visa conditions, but is quick to volunteer to cook up breads, pilau and soup - including weekly communal meals at her church and Friends of Refugees. “She has a big family and loves cooking for her family. She learnt recipes from her mother and just by watching what other cooks do,” Friends of Refugees chief executive Sri Samy said. The event will also feature human rights QC Julian Burnside, Real Australians Say Welcome campaigner Peter Drew and Greater Dandenong Mayor Sean O’Reilly as speakers. Several asylum seekers will also perform music on the night.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Tasty time for online food By CASEY NEILL THE South East Food Hub is hungry for growth. It started in Dandenong a year ago as a pilot project for delivering local produce to local people in Casey, Cardinia, Greater Dandenong and the Yarra Ranges - an area under-represented in both customer access to fresh food and easy producer access to market. “We try to help the smaller farmers in the local area to have an outlet for their produce and get a fair price for their food,” operations manager Naomi Atkins said. “We will supply businesses or individuals. They just hop online, order what there is available from the list and then we get it from the farmers directly. “We get all the food in here, repack it and then it gets sent out on a Tuesday.” Fruit, vegetables, juices, jams, preserves, cheese and eggs are on
the hub menu, and meat and other produce are on the cards. About 10 farmers are filling the 60-plus orders placed with the hub each week. “You can order as much or as little as you want,” Ms Atkins said. “Generally people will pick the buying group that’s closest to them and it gets delivered to a central point and then they would go and pick it up.” The not-for-profit hub outgrew its initial Cheltenham Road warehouse space, occupied by charity Avocare, and is now based at Calfresco Organics in Kooweerup. “Hopefully, as we expand, we’re going to need more staff and a bigger area. Watch this space,” Ms Atkins said. “It’s a bit of catch 22 at the moment. “We’ve got some farmers we
want to bring on board, but until we get bigger it’s a bit tricky actually getting their produce in because they don’t want to deliver for nothing. “If it were bigger quantities they would do so. “We need to grow our customer base.” Ms Atkins wants to see the hub movement grow, too. “I would love for everybody to know about it and to have the opportunity to get great fresh produce and keep farming sustainable for the smaller farmers,” she said. “For some of them I think their main outlet is going to be through farmers markets and you get a day like this (pouring with rain) on a Sunday morning and who wants to go to those?” Visit www.southeastfoodhub. org or www.facebook.com/sefoodhub to get involved.

Granny’s grant builds business work.” Tatiana said the business mentoring from Rob Jagger was a great help, too. “I’ve got a degree in economics but because I studied long ago, Rob was a help to refresh and give some new advice,” she said. Word about Nina’s pelmeni and vareniki spread from family and friends to a Russian restaurant. “They asked if mum could work for them to make dumplings,” Tatiana said. “Mum didn’t really want to work for somebody, she was 65 years old. “So they asked if she could just make the dumplings.” They set up in a Glen Eira City Council kitchen incubator designed to give new businesses a cheap place to start out. Tatiana said they expected From Granny to stay there for a few years but big orders started rolling in and they had to find a new space. “We didn’t plan to do it so quick,” she said. They moved to a Dandenong South factory last December.

shops as well,” Tatiana said. “Hopefully in the next couple of months we’ll start doing a bit of marketing.” The Journal supports the grants program

THREE people in a Dandenong South factory are churning out a tonne of Russian dumplings every month. From Granny’s started shortly after Nina Kuzovova and her daughter Tatiana moved from north-east Russia two years ago. In March it was among five businesses to receive City of Greater Dandenong Business Grants Program support - $8000 plus about $2000 in marketing and advice from the Small Business Mentoring Service. The program is designed to encourage business growth, attract investment and generate jobs. “The money was great because it did help us to purchase the dough mixer and some machinery,” Tatiana said. “But it’s more than the money - it’s the help that comes from someone else believing in what you’re doing. That’s given me an energy to keep going. “It’s hard in the beginning but the thing is that not only you believe that it’s going to

SENIORS ENJOYING LIFE
Pair of veterans find comfort in warming quilts Maxwell Alwyn Llewelyn Max joined the Army on 14 April 1942 at 19 years of age. After only weeks of training he was transferred to Canungra, Queensland, and from there his battalion was transported by a small ship in a convey of more than 50 ships being escorted by submarines to New Guinea. Max served in the 3rd Division 4th Brigade - Headquarters. During his four years’ service he was posted to Jacquinot Bay, Milne Bay, Lae, Finch Haven, Madang and other areas along the North Coast. On one occasion Max was transported by a Short Sunderland flying boat to Australia on compassionate leave.
Max and three other soldiers served together over the four years and stayed in contact after discharge. Max and one other still survive, both more than 90 years old, and still keep in regular contact with the others’ widows. Max has been supported throughout his life by his family and friends and since moving to Saffron Grove Retirement Village he has been enjoying the companionship of many more friends. Reginald Tokely Reg was conscripted into the British Army’s 7th Battalion, Royal Corp of Signals in early 1940, just before his 21st birthday. He was stationed at Whitby, Yorkshire, before he was sent
over to France. To get their trucks, filled with men and equipment, off the boat, they had to drive over floating petrol drum in the sea, with only the sight of the reflector of the truck in front for guidance! From there he moved to Belgium and at Ostend, Reg and his two mates were required to re-establish a telegraph office for the oncoming troops to use while the rest of the troops stayed on the other side of the river. While there Germans troops unwittingly camped beside them and began shelling the British troops on the other side of the river but Reg and his friends remained hidden. This was the second time Reg’s life had been saved. The first was while he was training and he
Reg Tokely, second from left, with his daughter Di Tokely and Max Llewelyn, right, and his wife Alice with their Quilts of Valour. went absent without leave to get married. When he returned to barracks the next day the place was empty because his entire troop had been deployed and were captured in Crete and never heard
of again. Since moving to Saffron Grove Retirement Village, Hallam, he has settled to a more companionable life. Saffron Grove is at 8 Saffron Drive, Hallam. 1187118-KC24-15

Print does the job on employment Emma data shows 1.4 million job seekers use print newspapers each month. Job seekers from certain industries are more likely to use print newspapers for job hunting. Those looking for work in public administration are 46 percent more likely to use print newspaper’s employment sections with similar results for mining (44 percent), and teachers and lecturers (27 percent) more likely to use print. Businesses looking to find the right candidate should employ print newspapers as part of their search, or risk missing out on a large pool of potential candidates.

Cara Stewart from St John’s said the schools strong tradition in music has brought through some of the most talented year 12 students she’s seen. “This year they were pretty outstanding and are student leaders as well as being fantastic musicians,” she said. This year’s Rock ’n’ Roll High School focused on stage craft.
“It was about putting on a good show and how to interact with other band members and the audience instead of just standing there and signing - it’s about putting on a show,” Ms Stewart said. On Friday 22 May students were treated to a performance from their teachers and Melbourne rock band Warbirds, followed by workshops and a question and answer session. “The Warbirds spoke a lot about how to get gigs and get paid to perform, the importance of being in a band with people that you like and also got down to things like who pays the sound engineers at gigs, social media, networking and promotion and recording. “It was really great for the students,” she said.
Year 12 student Monica said the event was inspiring. “It helped me establish a stronger bond with my peers and my passion for music. "The atmosphere was absolutely fantastic from the aweinspiring performance given by the Warbirds,” she said. The Rock ’n’ Roll High School was established as a replacement for the traditional music camp and Ms Stewart said the event really allows the students to let their hair down. “We had about 40 students perform on Saturday, a couple of the girls jazzed up a classical piano piece, we had a violin and piano duet do a combination of video game theme songs and had about 150 in the audience,” she said.

According to owner David Scaunich and manager Paul Stevenson they sell quality farm fresh eggs, chicken, beef, lamb, pork and other produce direct to the public. “The quality farm fresh produce is prepared in store by a dedicated team of butchers and staff,” David said. “Our best features are that things are freshly prepared daily, we offer in-store personal service and we have the ability to offer personal service from the smallest customers to the largest wholesale order.” They also have on-site parking, making it a quick, enjoyable shopping experience.

Our very own Golden Gator By JARROD POTTER HEADING overseas for a better chance to enter the college arena, Endeavour Hills’ basketballer Damien Rance is reaping the benefits of making an early move to America. Rance, 19, has signed on the dotted line with San Francisco State University (SFSU) ahead of the upcoming NCAA basketball season after playing out his final year of high school at Pope John XXIII High School. The road to becoming a Golden Gator was challenging to say the least as Rance packed his bags and left for greater opportunity abroad. He featured in Dandenong’s Victorian Youth Championship Men campaign in 2013 and also played SEABL that year, but craved the chance to play a better standard of basketball in the United States. Lining up for Pope John XXIII High School, Rance thoroughly enjoyed his time in New Jersey as he plied his craft in a successful side that picked up a state championship. “Going overseas to end my high school career has always been a plan of mine,” Rance said. “Talking to my trainer and mentor Luke Sunderland helped me with this process - I saw this as a head start into my college career, as the game is different and so is the lifestyle. “Another factor was being exposed to hundreds of colleges - It’s hard for all colleges to
reach out to Australia and see the talent there.” His high school basketball resumé is dotted with achievements including nomination for a McDonald’s All American honour, high school state championship and earning a Peach Jam National Championship with the New Jersey Playaz. These accolades led to a lot of prospective offers, but his love of the bay lifestyle and a familiar face helped make his decision easier as he picked SFSU. “I went on a visit to SFSU and I really enjoyed my time there,” Rance said. “It is a great city, met some great people within the school and team and the opportunity to play and be a part of a growing team is very exciting to me. “I had a previous relationship with Coach Vince Inglima (Assistant Coach) whom had coached me while he was an import for Dandenong Rangers.” At 200cm and still growing, Rance doesn’t mind mixing it with the guards or forwards and his versatility as a swingman has impressed wherever he played. “I am a hybrid player; I can play both outside and inside, depending on my match up,” Rance said. “Personally I like playing at the three - this is where I feel most comfortable. “I love hitting a big three in the last minutes of the game, boost my team to go on a run and also

tournament and make a good run my first year,” Rance said. “As years go on, we aim to go deeper into the tournament and winning the whole thing. “I am very happy to be attending SFSU and do not plan on leaving.” Rance is set to make his SFSU debut in November.

Hendawitharana in a spin By JARROD POTTER AN EIGHT-WICKET haul in a trial match all but secured spinning all-rounder Dulnath Hendawitharana a spot in the Cricket Victoria/ School Sport Victoria under-15 team. It was hard to keep the 14-year-old legspinner out of a trial match earlier this year as Hendawitharana snaffled up eight scalps and caught the selectors’ attention. “One of my cricket highlights was probably when I took eight-for in one of the trial games for the Victorian squad to get into the team,” Hendawitharana said. “My first wicket was my best wicket - just pitched on leg stump and hit the top of off. “It feels good to make the team - not many of my previous family members have played before, so I’m pretty stoked about it.” Hendawitharana, from Dandenong North, was thrilled with the chance to spin for his state and chip in from the lower order. “I love to bat mostly, but I’ve been picked as a bowler - I’m a leg-spinner,” he said.
“I like being an all-rounder because if you have a bad day with the bat you can always make it up with the ball and keep going. “I just started bowling when I was young and it came out well and my coach just told me to go with it so I stuck with it.” He’s no bunny down the tail end though, as the versatile right-hander loves to slog the red leather like Kumar Sangakkara or David Warner and tick off boundary after boundary. He also plays junior cricket for Noble Park and seniors for Hawthorn-Monash University in Victorian Premier Cricket after making a VPC fourths debut at 12-years-of-age with Prahran. Hendawitharana could see green-and-gold colours with a stellar outing at the tournament, as the best cricketers from the School Sport Australia 15-and-under Cricket Championships will form a Cricket Australia XI to take part in the Under-17 National Championships in September. Hendawitharana wanted to thank his coach Saliya Ahangama for his support. The Victorians head off next week for the championships, held from 13-19 June in Darwin.
SOMEBODY may have to give Lachlan Batten a belting at the beginning of every round, as Batten’s shake up proved the deciding factor in Dandenong’s impressive 19-point win over Northern Knights. After six weeks on the TAC Cup sidelines nursing a busted bicep - Batten, 18, finally returned to action for Dandenong, but it almost ended instantly after a clash of heads in the opening term. The Stingrays’ vice-captain had been roaming the defensive end before copping a big knock from a pair of Northern’s tall forwards - leaving the 175cm defender to be taken from the field in the hands of the trainers. He wasn’t seen for the rest of the term - as he went through the process to rule out concussion - but after getting the doctor’s confirmation Batten was given the all clear to get back out there. “It did hurt at the time - felt a bit dizzy,” Batten said. “One bloke came across my left shoulder and another came from the other side so it was a bit of a double hit - wasn’t too bad. “They weren’t going to let me come out again and had to go through the concussion test ... and came out firing. “Firing” is a fair understatement though. Batten was unstoppable in the forward arc crumbing the talls’ and creating his own chances en route to a three-goal haul in the second term. His efforts starting tipping the clash in the Sting-

rays’ favour as Batten’s brigade booted away from Northern. His return to the defensive end happened after half-time where he resumed his kick-out duties and helped steer the Stingrays out of danger.

Aris play for the final eight OUR last remaining hope in the National Cup championship battled it out yesterday evening. FFV State League 1 side South Springvale hosted NPL side North Geelong Warriors for a spot in the final eight of the Victorian qualifiers for the FFA Cup on Sunday afternoon after the Dandenong Journal went to print. Aris famously made a run into the inaugural
FFA Cup’s Round of 16 before being eliminated by Palm Beach Sharks and finished second overall in the Dockerty Cup - a late goal ending South Springvale’s fairytale run. For more on Aris’ Round-6 clash yesterday - click onto the Dandenong Journal website www.dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

The beginning of the end By JARROD POTTER MEN from all walks of life and all backgrounds must change their behaviour towards women. On Saturday taking a stand against violence towards women on behalf of their communities were Noble Park and Balwyn Football Clubs. The sides put aside their rivalry and stood together to halt the suburban scourge - domestic violence and violence towards women. Inspector Bruce Kitchen recited the humble, yet powerful White Ribbon Oath on Saturday and was joined in refrain by all who attended the blockbuster Queen’s Birthday clash. “I swear never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.” Members of the Greater Dandenong community - from Victorian Parliament, the council, the players, supporters and members of Noble Park Football Club - sent out the unified, strong message. The Bulls also had a team of junior footballers take the oath alongside their senior counterparts to ensure the next generation is aware of this problem before they begin their own romantic lives. Improvement has arisen in the community recently, as total family incident reports to Victoria Police have dropped from 2243 to 2133 between 2012/13 to 2013/14. But this number remains alarmingly high across Greater Dandenong and has grown 66 per cent from 2009/10 - at that time 1421 reported incidents. It has resulted in some harrowing statistics - a woman is killed almost every week in Australia by a partner or ex-partner and one-in-three women will suffer some form of abuse at the hands of a partner or ex-partner in their lives. Noble Park president David Allan said the clubs wanted to band together to support a cause and violence towards women is a problem that resonates throughout the state. “It’s the first year we’ve done it and it’s a cause that’s very relevant to both clubs as violence against women doesn’t discriminate on socio-economic grounds and can happen any-

where,” Allan said. “It’s important that we see ourselves as a vehicle to spread that message to the broader community. “We’d like the White Ribbon Day to become a regular fixture… we’ll do everything we can to continue further awareness and the message that comes with it.”
EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE - Round 8
Bulls get carved up By JARROD POTTER POUNCED on by more nimble opposition, Noble Park suffered its biggest loss of the season at the hands of perennial rival Balwyn. Balwyn kicked 10 goals on the trot to showcase the might of its four-strong forward line Jeff Gobbels, Luke Barker, Brendan Goss and Blake Broadhurst - en route to a 66-point triumph at Moodemere Street. Outside of a scintillating first quarter - with Kyle Martin (4 goals) jagging two of his bag in a lead-out performance from the goal square Noble Park struggled to match pace or intensity with Balwyn. While some may point to the legion of unavailable players - Shayne Allan, Ziggie Alwan, Jackson Sketcher and Brett Dore among others - as a reason for the Noble Park capitulation, rest assured the Bulls would not want any excuse against its name after the woeful performance. It was evident instead that Balwyn was more determined and far more willing to put their bodies on the line to get the job done. Seemingly half the Tigers’ outfit walked off the field limping or with a bandage or two, but the Balwyn line-up just shrugged off the pain and resumed the task at hand. Dan Donato’s charges walked all over Mick Fogarty’s men, in scenes reminiscent of the 2013 EFL grand final when these two coaches last clashed. Outside of some consolation goals in the fourth term - once the match was well-and-truly run and won - the Bulls could not find enough scoreboard pressure to put the Tigers on the back foot. Gallantly fighting from the defensive end, Piva Wright made the most of his promotion back to the first side as he held Broadhurst to two goals and Jarryd Plymin also endeavoured from the last line.
The midfield brigade - Craig Anderson and Sam Monaghan - were impressive early and once Martin switched from deep forward to the centre square, he helped rally the Bulls with 28 possessions. Noble Park drops to third on the EFL Division-1 ladder - behind Balwyn and Vermont - and travel on Saturday to face last placed Lilydale.

Keysborough MP Martin Pakula, the Victorian Attorney-General, believed the message is strongest served by friends and family at the local level to ensure domestic violence, or keeping silent about it, is no longer an option. “It’s extraordinarily important,” Pakula said. “This is about men telling other men that violence against women is inexcusable and telling men to stand up when they see something or hear
something that shouldn’t be happening. “Noble Park Football Club is a real leader in this community and for it to be taking such a powerful stand... to hear that message so strongly put by the club will have a real impact.” More information on the White Ribbon organisation is available via their website www.whiteribbon.org.au.

SPORT NPL 1 - Round 15
Down the mighty Murray By JARROD POTTER A MAGNIFICENT first half was enough for Dandenong City to brush aside regional powerhouse Murray United in a 3-2 triumph. With limited soccer action around Greater Dandenong on Saturday, all eyes focused on Frank Holohan Soccer Complex to witness City grind out a win following a second-half capitulation. The first half left most believing the match would be a one-sided thrashing as City’s Dario Matkovic and Chris Antoniadis combined to slot three goals in the first 25 minutes. Matkovic in particular impressed with a beguiling free kick that flew past Murray keeper Nathan Brown. While the early action belonged to the Dandy boys, Murray didn’t throw in the towel and generated a number of chances ap-
proaching the half. A 3-0 lead at the main break should have seen Dandenong City home comfortably, but City failed to capitalise on its opportunities, and as the shadows grew longer, Murray’s resolve grew stronger. Murray slotted two goals in 20 minutes to get back within one of City. No matter who was shooting, whether Ash Cattermole, Keegan Ziada or first-half star Matkovic, City could not pierce the net again and had to scramble to retain the three points. In the end Murray’s efforts were in vain as Dandenong City held on by the skin of its teeth - led by the backmen Chris Sanita and Chris Ross - to take the one-goal triumph. “We made life tough for ourselves,” Dandenong City coach Aaron Healey said.

COACHES and staff of the Calder Cannons scored their first win on the big stage when the aptly named Calder Cannon took out the GRV to-the-city final at Sandown Park on Thursday evening. Cheered on by a large crew of syndicate members and supporters track side, Calder Cannon was only moderately away from box eight before navigating his way through the field and going on to win by four lengths in a smart time of 41.90. Syndicate manager Paul Groves has been involved in greyhound racing since 2008 and Thursday’s triumph is one he’ll never forget. “I’ve won some non-penalty races at Sandown on a Sunday but last night was my first full stakes
winner, and being a $14,950 final it makes it extra special,” Groves said. “We bought him at the Ready to Race sales and at that stage he had never had a race start, or had even been named - we didn’t have high expectations for him, just to get him to the track would have been satisfying.” Groves, a teacher at Salesian College, was an assistant coach at TAC Cup club Calder last year and through the year fellow coaches and staff became interested in getting involved in greyhound ownership. Although many of the syndicate members are new to greyhound racing, they’re already hungry for more. “We’ve already purchased a pup, and luckily Calder Cannon’s
Calder Cannon - and his namesake the Calder Cannons Football Club - had a scintillating win on Thursday night. 140143 prize money has paid for him to be educated and cared for up to 20 months of age,” he added. Groves has extensive knowl-
edge of the greyhound racing industry, and is open to helping out groups who are interested in getting involved in greyhound ownership.
