The next day, police executed a warrant at a Wattles Court property in Healesville, where a 25-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man were charged with possessing and trafficking a drug of dependence. All of the drugs charges at the 28 and 29 May raids related to ice, and all of those arrested were bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court later in the year. He said that police had a ‘zerotolerance’ approach to drug use and offences, and urged members of the public to continue providing information to police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or through the local station.

“Don’t accept it in your own backyard – be pro-active,” Sgt Thomson said. “With the assistance of the local public, we were able to gather a good intelligence pool that led us to the end result.

“I want the public to keep calling us up, and knowing that if they’ve got information that’s validated, we’ll act on it – we take your concerns seriously.” A Victoria Police spokesperson said on Thursday that police would be continuing their investigations.

officers were involved in the raids, which are linked to other raids carried out on 28 May in Yellingbo and 29 May in Healesville. On 28 May, police executed a warrant on Sheep Station Creek Road in Yellingbo, where a 47-year-old Yellingbo man was charged with use and trafficking a drug of dependence and proceeds of crime. A 49-year-old Yellingbo man was also charged with firearms offences, possession of a drug of dependence and proceeds of crime, while a 24-year-old Cockatoo woman was charged with use and possession of a drug of dependence and handle stolen goods.

FOUR HEALESVILLE residents will front court in October after drug raids at four properties last week. Police from Healesville, Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) and Croydon Divisional Tasking Unit raided two Don Road properties, a Maroondah Highway property and a Joffre Road property before 9am on Thursday, 11 June. Healesville Police Sergeant Stewart Thomson said the raids were conducted as part of a local investigation on ice (crystal methamphetamine), which also involved the Police Dog Squad. “Basically, the situation is that, as the result of an ongoing local drug investigation, four search warrants were conducted in the Healesville area,” Sgt Thomson said. “As a result of the warrants, a number of drugs, paraphernalia, stolen property and firearms were seized.” After the raids, a 39-year-old Healesville man was charged with use and possession of a drug of dependence, proceeds of crime and handling stolen goods. A 25-year-old Healesville woman was charged with the possession and trafficking of a drug of dependence, while a 25-year-old Healesville man has been charged with possession and trafficking a drug of dependence, handling stolen goods and proceeds of crime. A 20-year-old Healesville man was charged with firearms offences. All three the drug offences were in relation to ice, but Sgt Thomson said drugs were not found at all of the properties searched. Cannabis was also found during the searches. The four will appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 16 October three of the group were bailed, but the 25-year-old Healesville man has been remanded in custody. Sgt Thomson said about 25 police

Mixing it with Melba By JESSE GRAHAM PASSIONATE Coldstream residents are being sought for a new committee to help organise a new project linking the town with the historic Melba estate. The Melba Connection Project is being set up to establish a path that will connect the Gateway and Lodge parts of town with the Coombe Melba Estate. The concrete path will feature nodes that may contain seating, lighting, artwork, story-panels or special horticulture related to Dame Nellie Melba and her estate in town. However, the project is in its infancy, and Coldstream Voice and the Yarra Ranges Council are setting up a community information night from 7-9pm on Thursday, 18 June, at the Coldstream Community Centre. At the evening, a sub-committee will be established, featuring local residents who are passionate about the project. Coldstream Voice member, Morris Maxwell, said the project doubled as a connection between the housing and shopping areas in the town, which are currently not connected by a path. Mr Maxwell said that passionate Coldstream residents were encouraged to come along and join the discussion and the sub-committee. “We desperately need people from Coldstream to become interested,” he said. Ryrie Ward Councillor, Fiona McAllister, said the project was a way to officially honour the town’s connection with Melba and the history surrounding her. Coombe’s Lou Tickner said the project would help to beautify the town, and residents could have their say as part of it. Ideas put forward by the council for some of the features of the walk include community artwork or commissioned public art, an interpretation of the avenue of hour, or the Melba Rose. The Melba Connection Project was inspired by the conversations around the Coldstream Structure Plan and the council’s recently-released Issues and Opportunities Paper. The Yarra Ranges Council expects a project plan will be released in 2015-'16, with development to take place over a number of years. For more information, or to express interest for the sub-committee and the meeting, call Yarra Ranges Council’s Santha Press on 9294 6239.

Briefly Search warrant A HEALESVILLE man will face court later in the year after police executed a search warrant at a Healesville-Yarra Glen Road property last week. On Tuesday, 9 June, police charged a 26-year-old Healesville man with handling stolen goods and proceeds of crime. He will be summonsed to Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Back to crime POLICE are searching for a burglar who broke into the Healesville Back Clinic last week, making off with computers and cash. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said that between Friday 5 June and Monday 8 June, unknown persons broke into the Symons Street property via a rear window. Det Sgt Smithwick said that computers and cash, with a value of about $3400, were taken in the burglary, and urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Teenager in custody

Morris Maxwell, Daniel Johnson, CrFiona McAllister and Lou Tickner are encouraging passionate Coldstream residents to help map out the project. 140398 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM

A TEENAGER has been remanded in custody after being arrested for criminal damage and theft last week. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Mark Smithwick, said the 18-yearold man was arrested on Tuesday, 9 June, in relation to multiple criminal damage and theft incidents in the Lilydale area. Det Sgt Smithwick said the man had been remanded in custody and would appear in court at a later date.

WHEN Pam Druitt started work in Healesville’s only chemist shop at 14, the most technical thing about the job was the telephone. The pharmacy business has changed over the years, but Pam says people have always been core business. Pam retired after more than 50 years on 9 June, and the mountains of flowers and gifts and the constant stream of people calling in to wish her well reflected the lives she has touched in that extraordinary length of time. “It’s just overwhelming, Pam said. “Everyone has been so kind. The response to the Mail’s farewell photo on Facebook was instant with over 100 comments on the many attributes that have made Pam such a respected and treasured part of the Healesville community - her smile, kindness, and helpful and caring approach to her work. “Pam has not changed a bit, Kathryn Reed wrote. “I just had a huge flashback to being 16 again ... never lose that cackle laugh. Pam started her career at Rutherfords chemist in November 1964. The job offer ‘Do you think Pam would like to come and work here?’ came from Mr Rutherford through Pam’s sister. “She asked me on the Monday and I went in and said ‘Here I am ... ready for work’, Pam recalls. When Rutherfords sold she went with the business to McIntosh’s for just over 20 years. When McIntosh’s sold, she stayed on with George Kakafikas and Anita Beck for 15 years and has worked for the past 18 months for the current owner, Con Gentis.

PM checks on rail By JESSE GRAHAM

By KATH GANNAWAY

YARRA Glen and Healesville community members were treated to a special morning tea over the weekend, when Prime Minister Tony Abbott dropped by. Mr Abbott visited the Yarra Glen and Healesville railway stations on Saturday 13 June as part of visit to see the work to restore the Yarra Valley Railway line. After arriving in Yarra Glen with Casey MP Tony Smith and getting an update on the project by YVR vice-president Brett Whelan, the group drove down to Healesville for a morning tea with community members and volunteers. In an exclusive interview with the Mail, Mr Abbott said he was impressed with the work done by YVR volunteers. “This is a tribute to the commitment, the passion and the expertise of people who are just so totally engaged with the project,” he said. He said the initiative shown by the community to get the line re-opened from Yarra Glen to Healesville was one of the considerations when the Liberal Party pledged $3.56 million before the 2013 Federal Election. “With all of these Community Support Grants, we want to see evidence that other people have got skin in the game,” he said. “The State Government has made a substantial contribution, and local people have made a very substantial contribution in cash and in kind. “You’ve got hundreds of people who are investing hundreds of hours - weeks, months, years of their lives that’s something the Commonwealth should look at for support.” In a speech to the attendees, Mr Whelan said that more than 500 vol-

YARRA Ranges Council will consider submissions on the sale of the Warburton Caravan Park at a special meeting on 23 June. The council resolved at Tuesday night’s council meeting to appoint a committee as part of the ongoing sale process. As reported in the Mail previously, the council announcement in April identifying the preferred tenderer as a group that owns parks, including Big4 franchises, in other parts of Victoria, led to a petition calling for community consultation on the sale. Issues raised following the announcement also concerned the unsuccessful tender of the Warburton Community Bank, which would effectively retain community ownership of the park, and a lack of commitment by the council to investing any sale proceeds back into the local community. Cr Mike Clarke said he read the proposal as reflecting the need for an independent committee. “It strikes me as being an appropriate approach to take regarding submissions for the Warburton Caravan Park from the public,” he said. Cr Maria McCarthy in a briefing prior to the council said no decision had been made on whether the sale would proceed. “It’s still going through its due process,” she told the Mail. “We’re looking forward to hearing submissions regarding the caravan park, especially from community groups from the area and what their hopes and aspirations are for that space.” The committee formed on Tuesday night is made up of all councillors, subject to any councillor declaring a conflict of interest. The ward councillor for Warburton, Cr Jim Child, has previously declared a conflict of interest on this matter. The 23 June meeting will be held at 5pm at the council offices in Lilydale and will address submissions received by council in response to the public notice.

Letters Spokesman surprise I WAS surprised to see in the ‘Mail’, Geoff Biggs of Toolangi presented as a spokesman for the community. In the 1990s, Geoff was a member of the committee that created the Central Highlands Forest Management Plan that weakened the implementation of the Leadbeater’s Possum Action Statement. This allowed industrial logging to continue on

a collision path with the broader conservation needs of public forests. Since then, he has played little or no role in community life and it appears he has not kept up to date with the science. Decades ago, claims like Geoff’s that logging would ensure possum numbers were maintained were exposed as self-serving rhetoric fabricated by those who supported logging. Where is there any evidence for his claim the possums are “around a lot of other areas in

worked in the timber industry and, as such, they played an important role, deserving respect for their part in the history of the area. But the industry taskforce currently being established by Minister Neville will be considering the future of the forests and seeking a way forward. Geoff is harking back to a past era that is long gone and is clearly out of touch with the needs and aspirations of the current community. Steve Meacher, Toolangi.

Pages from the past

Joe is out of order By KATH GANNAWAY “GET a good job; earn good money; get a house”. Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey has copped heaps over his comments on housing affordability over the past week. And he should have. Debate over housing affordability has raged on every type of media, but it’s the underlying message that those simplistic comments convey to the majority of Australians, including young people and families across Yarra Ranges, that really cuts. Housing affordability is an issue for everyone, but for people living in the rural interface communities of Yarra Ranges where homelessness and housing stress present a day-to-day battle, comments like those made by Mr Hockey last week are not only infuriating, they are demoralising. What hope have we got when decision-makers in Can-

berra and Spring Street, don’t have even the remotest grip on what life is really like ‘out there’. It’s not just about housing, it’s about almost every social issue that affects lower socioeconomic groups - domestic violence, education - even vaccination. Cuts to critical programs are made with a broad-brush approach undermining the ability of individuals and the efforts of support organisations that deal with these issues at the coal face. Take the base assertion ‘get a good job’. In 2013 job opportunities for hundreds of Yarra Ranges people, young people, disadvantaged people, older people looking to reskill, were crushed when Swinburne University closed its doors in Lilydale. The Federal Government’s withdrawal of funding from the Community Legal Service as part of the 2014 budget pulled

the rug from under the very organisation that gives victims of domestic violence the legal means to take a stand. Funding cuts to the Boys to Men program which addresses the same issue at the core building respect in boys and young men, who often don’t have a significant male role model in their lives, for girls, women, and themselves. Where is the thinking when a government seriously proposes leaving the unemployed without an income for six months in communities where there is higher than average unemployment, poor school attendance and a high number of families on generational welfare. Certainly housing affordability was the catalyst, but overwhelmingly the message that many would have taken from Mr Hockey’s comment last week is one of disillusionment that the decision-makers at the highest level of government are tragically out of touch.

Barry, who recently met with a serious accident, a benefit dance will be held in Narbethong Hall on Friday 21 June. The Marysville Orchestra will provide excellent music and as all appointments will be tip top, a happy time is promised to what should constitute a record house. Healesville Footballers Encouraged THE ladies committee of the Healesville Football Club held a delightful social at ‘Marna House’ on Saturday night. Music of the ‘old-time’ night from 3AR was well received on Mr J.A Challinor’s equipment, which was operated in masterly fashion. Mrs Furmston also contributed to the musical portion. Owing to the lamented death of the club president’s father, the attendance was somewhat limited. Those present observed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect to the memory of an ardent supporter of the club, the late Mr J.G Christie. Dancing and singing were indulged in till midnight. The Healesville Railway HEALESVILLE'S claim for the retention of the railway were advanced another step at an informal meeting organised by the Tourist and Progress Association. Council moves to end some logging By JESSE GRAHAM

FOHH members James Frazer and Marita Hanigan with the Zoos Victoria Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award. 140374_01 Picture: ROB CAREW

Silver marked spot By KATH GANNAWAY FRIENDS of the Helmeted Honeyeater (FOHH) has been recognised for 25 years of achievement at the 2015 Zoos Victoria’s Hall of Fame Awards. The group, which has 200 members and is based at the Yellingbo Nature Reserve, was awarded the Honorary Life Achievement Award. Melbourne Zoo’s Leopard Lodge was transformed into a forest wonderland in celebration of Victoria’s bird emblem, the Helmeted Honeyeater for the awards which were attended by Premier Daniel Andrews, the Hon Alex Chernov AC QC, Governor of Victoria, Mrs Elizabeth Chernov, and Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water Lisa Neville. The Hall of Fame celebrates the outstanding people and supportive organisations that have made a significant contri-

bution to Zoos Victoria. Premier Daniel Andrews presented the Honorary Life Achievement Award to the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater for the group’s tireless work in the recovery of the iconic Victorian species. In addition to the Lifetime Achievement Award, Charles Tegner of the Merrin Foundation was awarded the Fighting Extinction Award for his work supporting Zoos Victoria’s Helmeted Honeyeater breeding program. FOHH was represented at the awards dinner by Environmental co-ordinator James Frazer and secretary Marita Hanigan. Ms Hanigan thanked Zoos Victoria and the many government and funding orgnaisations who contributed to the work of FOHH. Included were founder the late Steve Craig and president Bob Anderson and

vice- president Richard Case, who have been active members for the life of the group. She also recognised field ornithologist Bruce Quin. “Without his 22-plus years of work, we would not have had the good outcomes we are now looking at,” she said. Ms Hanigan said, “80,000 plants don’t grow themselves,” acknowledging the work of the nursery staff and volunteers. Her ‘biggest thanks’ went to all the volunteers and members. “I am very proud of them all and what collectively we have achieved,” she said. Both Premier Andrews and Minister Neville acknowledged the role of volunteers, staff and other organisations saying it was their outstanding work that made Victorian zoos the best in Australia.

MURRINDINDI Shire Council has thrown its hat into the ring in the debate on the critically endangered Leadbeater’s Possum, supporting a report recommending the end of logging in the Toolangi area. At its meeting on 27 May, Murrindindi councillors passed a motion to write to Environment Minister Greg Hunt and his Victorian counterpart Lisa Neville, supporting the recent up-listing of the Leadbeater’s Possum to critically endangered. Within the motion, the council also resolved to support a recommendation in the Threatened Species Scientific Committee’s report, endorsed by the Federal Government, to cease logging in the Central Highlands area to protect the possum. Murrindindi mayor Margaret Rae said the motion was a move to recognise that there had been “insufficient” action to protect the possum in the past. “I think council’s position has traditionally been that there’s room for all things within our shire, with the right sort of balance,” Cr Rae said. “Logging has its role in this economy, and the environment plays its role from a species pointof-view and tourism, which is also part of the economy as well - we’ve always supported both to the best of our ability. “I think the feeling is this particular species now is such a special one and so endangered, it is worthy of support - the feeling very strongly at council was that if something wasn’t done now, it would be too late, and none of us want to see that happen.” Mr Hunt, at the time of the up-

listing announcement, said he was inviting the State Government and Ms Neville to be part of the review and update to the possum’s draft Recovery Plan, which was last updated in the 1990s. Ms Neville, in recent interviews, has been supportive of the up-listing of the possum, but indicated an industry taskforce, with all relevant groups involved, would be the state’s approach to answering the question of how to save the possum. “I am in favour of allowing the key parties to find solutions,” she told the Mail in May. “I think everyone sitting around the table is there not to be divisive, but to find solutions.” VicForests’ general manager of Stakeholders and Planning Nathan Trushell said the body supported the review for the recovery plan, but expressed disappointment at Murrindindi Council’s motion. “I imagine that many of the thousands of hard working Victorians whose livelihoods depend on the industry would be disappointed by the position the Murrindindi Shire Council has taken, especially before the State and Federal Government have completed work that they are currently undertaking,” Mr Trushell said. He said that “more efficient surveying” had meant that Leadbeater’s Possums had been found at a “high rate” in the Toolangi area, and said colonies had been found in areas harvested for timber or burnt bushfires in recent decades. What do you think of the Murrindindi Shire Council’s decision? Write a Letter to the Editor to editor@ mailnewsgroup.com.au or to 244 Maroondah Highway, Healesville.

Conversation about beauty By JESSE GRAHAM

Join Karina Doughty, Sarah Wilcox and Anna Tuchtan for Soul Dance. 140375 Picture: ROB CAREW

Soulful dance celebration By KATH GANNAWAY SOUL Dance struck a chord when it began on the winter solstice at Warburton three years ago. Karina Doughty asked some friends with dance and facilitation backgrounds to join her to create a weekly dance experience, and over 150 Friday nights of dance later, it is more popular than ever. Karina described Soul Dance as a creative and soulful dance practice that allowed people to explore and express themselves through movement. “For some it is a powerful

weekly practice of spiritual and emotional depth - others come for a great workout, or to have a fun and playful time with friends,” she said. “The beauty of Soul Dance is that you are free to travel your own unique dance journey.” Soul dance is held every Friday night at Warburton Arts Centre and for its third birthday celebration on 19 June, there is an invitation to anyone who hasn’t been to a session before to join in for free. “Each week one of the six facilitators creates a two-hour music set with an intention in

mind,” Karina said. “That intention is shared with the participants a week in advance and can offer a point of focus or inspiration for the dance.” Soul Dance is one of the events promoted through Yarra Ranges council’s ‘Dance Tracks’, celebrating dance participation and performance and recognising the holistic health benefits of regular dance. No dance experience is required for Soul Dance. To register for a complimentary ticket visit www.facebook.com/ events/944962635555844/ .

WHAT makes us find things beautiful, valuable or worth keeping? Is value in beauty or symmetry, or does something else cause things to become valuable? These are the questions Healesville artist Ali Griffin wants to put to those who view her latest exhibition, the conversation she wants to start. In her latest exhibition, Still, Ms Griffin uses different mediums to explore the concept of beauty, particularly the idea of what makes some things more valuable than others. “Using the materials of mirrors, copper, tapestries and real things; cocoons which may or may not be alive, birds which are deceased, feathers and things that are real, but ones that are made, as well, out of resin - to show the juxtaposition of the real versus the man-made,” Ms Griffin said. “What do we value more and why do we value them more, and should we value them more? “Trying to ask that question and to say to people: what needs to happen in our world so we value what we’ve got, so we don’t destroy it?”

Healesville artist Ali Griffin will display her work in her new exhibition, Still, from 3 July at Healesville's Memo Picture: JESSE GRAHAM Hall. 140303 Ms Griffin said the themes also reflected the current discussions about how to protect the critically-endangered Leadbeater’s Possum in the Toolangi and Yellingbo areas. “I’ve done little drawings of a Leadbeater’s Possum skull sitting on a mirror, showing that there’s more than one side to the argument, but also that reflecting of the beauty,” she said, noting the popular belief that people with symmetrical faces were often seen as more beautiful. “Skulls aren’t always seen as beautiful and death isn’t always seen as beautiful, but it depends on how you look at it - the reflective of death is life,” she said. Still will be Ms Griffin’s

first solo exhibition, and she said it hoped to start conversations, open people’s minds and to make a difference in the way they thought. “I think it absolutely depends on the artist as to why they exhibit - for me, it’s basically to change the world, one little exhibition at a time,” she said. “Because I feel that art touches people on a level they don’t understand. “If we embrace it, it can change the world.” Still opens on Friday, 3 July, at 6pm at Healesville’s Memo Hall, 235 Maroondah Highway, Healesville. For more information, visit www.culturetracks.info.

ALOHA is a sleep-inducing, catastrophic wreck of a movie. Brian Gilcrest (Bradley Cooper) is a military contractor stationed in Hawaii to secure a blessing for a public project, but soon gets involved in more serious matters. Who would have thought that an innocent romantic comedy would challenge Fifty Shades of Grey as worst film of the year? Cooper is a charming actor, but his character is a self-

absorbed jerk, and Emma Stone (as his air force liaison Captain Allison Ng) is annoyingly earnest and over-the-top. Most of the character development is dryly told to us through contrived dialogue. The plot is empty and lacking in conflict, and the romantic interactions are never convincing, full of shallow overreactions and an off-putting age-gap between Cooper (40) and Stone (26). Critics and audiences have criticised Aloha for depicting a very white Hawaii, when in fact only about a quarter of Hawaiians are Caucasian.

The film pays lip-service to Hawaiian traditions with a weird mystical element that has no meaningful pay-off, and Gilcrest’s project receiving a blessing from native Hawaiian leaders feels almost incidental to the overall movie. The sub-plot about weaponised satellites not only feels more at home in the Reagan era, but it’s a very cynical rebuke of privatised space enterprises. On every level, Aloha is insultingly terrible. - SETH HYNES

SES hones vital skills By KATH GANNAWAY THE less Upper Yarra SES volunteers have to prove their skills in a real-life crash, the better. But, the skills are what save lives, and, as with anything, practice makes perfect. The unit is regularly on the look out for cars that they can dismantle. SES volunteer Bob Sanders says every car they work on is different in some aspect. “If we can nail it down in a practice situation, we can make a better job of it when it’s for real,” he said. Donated cars are used at community events where the SES demonstrate some of the specialist equipment they use to dismantle cars involved in a crash. The demonstrations are awesome. The skill required to handle immensely powerful cutters, grinders and other specialist equipment is honed to achieve the very best outcome for people injured and or trapped in vehicles involved in a crash where time is critical. Working on different makes and

models of cars is also important. “We will take just about anything, but we prefer cars with the glass still intact, because one of the critical elements is being able to practice glass management,” Mr Sanders said. With new members coming through, and older members always keen to refresh and pass on their skills, Upper Yarra SES would be very happy to hear from anyone who has a vehicle they would like to donate. The SES is also always keen to hear from community members who would like to know more about becoming a SES volunteer. The unit responds to a range of emergencies in addition to road trauma, and is involved in providing education to residents and school groups on how best to prepare for emergencies. So, a range of roles is available for volunteers of all ability and mobility levels, and accredited training is provided. Right royal result on road DRINK drivers busted over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend have sharply dropped in number, compared to last year, but speedsters have still taken to Yarra Ranges roads in their hundreds. Last week, Victoria Police released the results of Operation Regal, a statewide operation run over the Queen’s Birthday weekend from Friday 5 to Monday 8 June. In the Yarra Ranges, five drivers were charged with drink driving over the weekend, a drop of more than 70

per cent from last year’s result of 17 drink drivers being caught. But 221 drivers were issued with speeding fines on the weekend, and Acting Superintendent David Griffin, commenting on the state-wide results, said work needed to be done. Supt Griffin said that 2100 drivers were tested for drugs, with 182 returning a positive result - four of these drivers were caught in the Yarra Ranges. “Seeing one in 12 drivers testing positive for drugs is a real concern,” he said. Unregistered vehicles, unlicensed or disqualified drivers were also an is-

sue for police over the operation, with more than 1500 offences recorded state-wide across the three categories. In the Yarra Ranges, 21 drivers were found with unregistered vehicles, six drivers were caught driving while unlicensed and six were caught driving while disqualified or suspended. Overall, state-wide offences recorded over the weekend dropped by 13 per cent, but Supt Griffin said drivers were continuing to behave dangerously. “It is also worrying that 2345 people were caught speeding and 263 were using their mobile phones,” he said. “This dangerous behaviour could

easily have ended in tragedy and I hope those caught will learn their lesson before their families receive a knock at the door from one of our officers.” Four drivers were caught driving while using their mobile phones in the Yarra Ranges, 14 drivers were found to be disobeying signs or signals and three people were caught travelling without a seatbelt. The neighbouring police service area of Cardinia, meanwhile, recorded much lower offences over the weekend, with only 73 speeding drivers caught, 10 unregistered vehicles and one mobile phone offence handed out.

Drivers continued to use the road illegally, however, with four unlicensed drivers and seven disqualified or suspended drivers caught driving. One driver was charged for drunk driving, and no drivers were found to be under the influence of drugs or driving without seatbelts. Yarra Ranges and Cardinia police officers each impounded one vehicle over the weekend. The Mail repeatedly approached the Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol for comment about Operation Regal, but did not receive a response by deadline.

There is also a brand new Belling induction freestanding oven with three separate ovens as well as a new Asko dishwasher in the kitchen- the no grout finishes in the bathrooms are very beautiful and the tiles in the kitchen and laundry are exquisite. The studio/workshop outside is such stuff as dreams are made of, with sweeping views of the valley and lots of natural light. Town icon’s bakery treats Manager Kyle Bray says that customers are drawn to the personal touch provided by the employees. “We offer great customer service and enthusiastic and friendly staff to cater for our customers’ needs,” she said. Open seven days a week, from 6am to 6pm, the bakery is the perfect location on the Maroondah Highway in Healesville. It caters for groups of all sizes and offers a huge car park, capable of holding anything from motorbikes to caravans.

While sitting outside, visitors to the bakery can enjoy great views of the mountains from the relaxing outdoor setting. The grassed area allows visitors to take in the beautiful park bridge, as well as making for easy access to the park. Inside, the bakery has a friendly and relaxing vibe. It boasts an open-seating plan, plenty of table, a play area for kids and couches for the travel weary. Kylie says the bakery sells a great range of products, including the clas-

sics that have made it so renowned in the area. “We sell various pies, our famous Beestings and vanilla slice,” she said. “We also have an established range of gluten-free products. “We have something for all ages. “For the kids, we have zoomers and shortbread biscuits.” The bakery offers all-day breakfast, lunch, early dinner, vegetarian delights and catering for groups of all sizes. Perhaps, it is the homemade touch that makes the pies so good,

with pies proudly made by Beechworth Bakery employees. Among its many specialties is the Beesting - a sweet bun lightly spread with apricot jam, filled with the creamiest custard and topped with toffeed almonds. It has proved a must-try for the many visitors to the region, who have flagged the bakery as a good stopping point as they make their way to Eildon or the alpine area, or as they tour wine regions. For more information, contact the bakery on 1300 233 784.

WHETHER you’re a local or just passing through Healesville, you’ll never be disappointed with a visit to the Beechworth Bakery. The bakery has a long and proud history of serving high quality baked goods as well as supporting the local community. Originally established in Beechworth, the Healesville bakery is one of six that are located in Victorian towns. Now a Healesville icon, the bakery combines old-fashioned service with modern facilities.

I AM writing in response to the ‘Mail’ article (“Intense ‘free range’ heat”, 2 June, page 5). Currently in the Shire of Yarra Ranges you cannot be issued with a permit to conduct intensive animal husbandry such as piggeries, feedlots and broiler farms. For the hundreds of people who signed the petition saying no to Amendment C146, this is a good thing. They don’t want the offensive odours, negative environmental impacts and concerns over animal welfare that go hand in glove with such enterprises. Introducing Amendment C 146 would mean that in the future it ‘would’ be possible for these sorts of enterprises to be issued with a permit. And once the amendment was introduced, there would be no guarantee that in the future piggeries, feedlots and broiler farms would not be permitted in our shire. The council may say it wishes to promote free range farming, but introducing this amendment is not the way to go about it. “Free range is free range,” says Cr Jim Child. Yes it is. And it does not require a permit. So why change the legislation? “Farming is done differently now,” says Cr Childs. Right again. In the past 40 years, pig meat production has increased by over 50 per cent while the number of pig producers has dropped from 40,000 to just 1868. This has only been possible because these animals are now kept in ‘factory farms’: large industrialised complexes where animals are kept in a state of permanent confinement. In the mid-1960s, feedlotting started in Australia. About 40 per cent of Australia’s total beef supply is from the expanding feedlot sector. And it is these that could be permitted by introducing the amendment. In a letter sent to residents by council it is stated that “intensive animal husbandry can also be less intense free range farms where animals are not kept in enclosures” and “any farm where most food comes from outside the enclosures, i.e. the animals are not solely grazing, fall within the classification of intensive animal husbandry.” Such farms may be labelled “free range”, but it doesn’t mean council should be promoting them. If feed for stock must be supplemented by food imported into a property, it indicates that stock numbers cannot be supported by the carrying capacity of the land they are kept on.

Stock levels above the carrying capacity of the land leads to destruction of ground cover due to over-grazing. Soil exposure and subsequent erosion due to wind and rain action follows. Loss of topsoil means the enterprise cannot be sustainable as without soil in which to grow no feed can be produced. This is not the sort of “free range” farming the council should want to support either. If the council’s aim is to promote sustainable free range farming, then I fully support them. But they aren’t going to do it by introducing Amendment C146. Marilyn Comerford, Seville.

‘Op’ shops tops WHAT a great article on the Adcare Opportunity Shop, telling of sharing their ‘profits’ between several Yarra Valley schools. I thought it was a terrific way to highlight the good that ‘op’ shops can achieve in our local community. So many people would have no idea of the good these hard-working volunteers are achieving through their many hours of washing, sorting and presenting pre-used goods to be sold in their shops. Many people can benefit with the odd bargain and then to read that our schools are also the recipients of their generosity is just great to see. This is just one of many ways that everyone can contribute to our community. Keep supporting our opportunity shops with your good used items. Nancy Donovan, Seville.

Walkway a wonderful result I KNOW Archdeacon Gail Pinchbeck (Anglican and Uniting Church minister), who fell and was injured badly on the Warburton Brisbane Bridge in 2013. In complaining to council, she was apparently told ‘she had no right to be on the bridge’, as it was vehicles only. I would like to thank the residents and the petitioners for the walkway created when the bridge was repaired. Warburton benefits greatly. Gail probably does not want to be remembered, but I would want to thank her. Thanks also, of course, to the council for the wonderful result. I recommend the council names the pedestrian bridge addition as the Gail Pinchbeck walkway. But, as ever, I am sure Gail would want to remain invisible. Ivor Wolstencroft, Warburton.

Brigade’s centenary parade By JESSE GRAHAM UPPER Yarra residents came out in force at the end of last month to pay tribute as part of Warburton Fire Brigade’s 100th birthday, taking up lanterns and hitting the streets on Saturday night. The brigade held its open day on Saturday 30 May, with a day of music, food and activities from 11am, before a ceremony and unveiling of the brigade’s bell to mark the group’s centenary. When the sun went down, firefighters and community members gathered at the Alpine Lodge hotel for a torchlight march to the station at the other end of town. Uniformed volunteers from Lilydale, Belgrave, Yellingbo, Ferntree Gully, Clematis, Yarra Junction and The Basin’s CFA brigades all joined Warburton’s members for the parade, which was accompanied by performances from the Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria and Ringwood Highland Pipe Bands. Firefighters carried openwick torches, while residents applauded on the sidelines with home-made lanterns for the event, with about 70 made earlier that day in a workshop with artist Sioux Dollman.

CFA Region 13’s Kim Holland, CFA board member Michael Freshwater and Warburton Fire Brigade president Barry Marshall with the unveiled bell. Pictures: CONTRIBUTED Warburton Fire Brigade centenary co-ordinator Leila Smith said the event was “beautiful”, with one of the major highlights being the bell unveiling. “It was originally housed under the first fire station,” Ms Smith said. “We have put it back together and given it a bit of paint it’s now in pride of place at the front of the station.” The event was the culmination of the brigade’s centenary events. Ted Granlick and Rob Worlley from Hoddles Creek CFA manned the barbecue at the torchlight parade.

Interleague comp: cream hand-picked

By DENNIS FULLER WHAT appeared, to the naked eye, to be benign conditions at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday, proved to be more tricky than expected. A small but particularly troubled group hit the first tee, ready for the challenge. When the shouting and tumult had subsided, it was Steve Town (13) who floated to the top to win overall and in A Grade with 36 points. An arm wrestle ensued in B Grade, but after the scrutinisers gave the cards an exceptionally thorough scrutiny, it emerged that Allan Ecclestone (18) beat Ken Sumsion (25) on a countback when they both managed 34 points. The rest of the field found scoring at an acceptable level not on the menu for the day and many downcast golfers trudged into the tuck shop after play with little to cause a smile. Broc Reynold was nearest the

By KATH GANNAWAY THE Dandenong Ranges Junior Football League’s top youngsters represented the league well over the Queens’ Birthday weekend in the annual Interleague Competition. Playing against the Frankston District League and Mornington Peninsula League at Shepley Oval, the Under 14s came out winners, with the Under 15s, 16s, 17s putting in strong performances over the weekend. DRJFL Development Squad committee member Ian Purdon said Interleague remained an important part of the league’s program, giving players an opoortunity to hone their abilities and skills in a bigger pool. “At one level, it feeds into the AFL pathway with representatives from organisations such as Eastern Ranges and Gippsland Power going along to these carnivals to look out for future prospects,” Mr Purdon said. “If that leads to AFL, that’s great. If they go back to their clubs as better footballers, that’s good as well.”

pin on the 4th, Ross Martin the 7th, Town the 13th and Ken Hill managed a double on the 12th and the pro pin 18th. The ladies event turned into a one horse affair, when Leanne Morison gave the other ladies a thrashing to greet the judges and pocket the prize money. Wednesday’s Overly Frumpish Golf (OFG) was a bisque par event where players had to nominate whether they would use their handicap strokes on either odd or even holes. Much rumination occurred when this decision was being made. In the end a draw resulted, with Ken Sumsion (26) and Bobby Kennedy (24) sharing the spoils when they came in with +3. Geoff Whittaker (23) was the best of the rest one back on +2. Next Saturday is a stroke event which doubles as the qualification round for the club’s Match Play Championship, so the big guns will be out.

Emerald, Wandin at apex By JUDY ORREN ROUND 9 in Yarra Valley Mountain District Football Netball League saw a top-of-the-table clash in Division 2 over the weekend. Emerald is now one-game clear on top with Kinglake and Thornton Eildon fighting for second. Wandin is two games clear on top, from Woori Yallock and Monbulk. Rohan Saric-Skews sets the pace in the Under 18s for Healesville. 140467

Healesville's Robert Hunter takes a mark before an appreciative crowd. The Under 18s cracked the 100 against Olinda for its only win of the day. Final scores were 15.10 (100) Pictures: KATH GANNAWAY to 2.6 (18). 140467 Healesville best players: J. Goding, B. Miller, D. Plozza. Belgrave 23.11 (149) d Warburton Millgrove 14.7 (91) This was a great game for the first half as it went goal for goal. Belgrave led by just two points at the main break. Belgrave turned this clash on its head in the third, as it slammed on 7 goals to 1 in a quarter where they made Warby look slow and second to the ball. They raced to a 39-point lead at the last break. Belgrave finished the day off well, booting 6 goals to 3 to win by a comfortable 58 points, with Mitch Collins finishing with eight goals for the winners. Belgrave best players: B. Collins (2 goals), B. Dadswell (2 goals), P. Gough (1 goal) Warburton Millgrove best players: T. Walker, D. Noorman, L. Barnard (2 goals). Monbulk 20.17 (137) d Mount Evelyn 8.12 (60) Mount Evelyn was competitive for the first half of this game as they only trailed by 11 points at the long break. Monbulk, however, started to open up the play in the third and made its forward entries count as it booted 4 goals to 1 to grab a handy 21-point lead at three-quarter time. Monbulk finished the day off in great style as its running game came to the fore. They booted 8 goals to 1 to come away with a 77-point victory after a dominant second half. Monbulk’s R. Savory had a great game with a best-on-ground performance, booting seven goals. Monbulk best players: R. Savory (7 goals), S. Williams (3 goals), D. Ward (2 goals) Mount Evelyn best players: C. Carmody, R. Cowan (1 goal), M. Martin. Woori Yallock 17.13 (115) d Upwey Tecoma 6.8 (44) Woori played a very consistent four quarters, where they kept increasing their lead at every change. They led by 12 points at quarter time, extended that to 26 points by half time. They then really kicked away in the third as they booted 6 goals to 2 to lead by 48 points to have the game well in hand. The last quarter saw Woori finish the day well as they added another 5 goals to 2 to win by 69 points in a very impressive display. Woori Yallock best players: J. Adams (1 goal), K. Busoli (1 goal), B. Monkhorst (4 goals) Upwey Tecoma best players: B. Hinton, R. Hannagan, J. Waters. Wandin 27.19 (181) d Yarra Glen 6.6 (42) Wandin took no time to show they weren’t in the mood to give any mercy as they booted 9.7 to just 2 behinds in the first quarter to have this game in their keeping. The second quarter was at least a little more competitive with Wandin booting 4 goals to 2 and their lead was 73 points at the main break. The second half was all one-way traffic as Wandin seemed to do as they pleased. They booted 8 goals to 3 in the third and backed that up with a 6-goal-to-1 last quarter to win by 139 points in what was a very one-sided, easy win. Wandin best Players: M. Polkinghorne (4 goals), J. Messis (5 goals), J. Myers (1 goal) Yarra Glen best players: B. Ashton, D. Hurley, L. Telford (2 goals).

DIVISION 2 SENIORS Emerald 13.13 (91) d Kinglake 8.7 (55) This was a top-of-the-ladder clash with Emerald eventually coming out on top after a tight first three quarters. Defences on both sides were difficult to penetrate as goals were hard to come by. There were only three goals scored in the first term, with Kinglake leading 2.4 (16) to 1.3 (9) at the first change. The next two quarters stayed tight but it was Emerald that nudged their way in front by three-quarter time but that was just four points. Emerald’s last quarter was brilliant. Kinglake looked to have lost their run, and Emerald took advantage as they slammed on 6 goals to 1 to come away with a 6-goal win and go onegame clear in top spot. Emerald best players: J. MacKay (5 goals), A. Hellriegel (4 goals), J. Dodd (2 goals) Kinglake best players: J. Walter, T. Arnott, S. McMahon. Thornton Eildon 14.11 (95) d Gembrook Cockatoo 9.5 (59) Thornton was given a slight scare in this game as they had to fight off a very determined Gembrook. Thornton found themselves trailing at half time by three points after a low-scoring first half with scores at 4.3 (27) to 3.6 (24). The third term saw the game open up and Thornton started to get on top. They booted 6 goals to 3 to take a 16-point lead into the last change. Thornton continued their good form in the last, and showed they are certainly the real deal as a premiership threat. They finished the day booting 5 goals to 2 to win by 6 goals. Thornton’s L. Davison had a great game, booting 7 of his teams 14 goals in a best on ground display. Thornton-Eildon best players: L. Davison (7 goals), J. Herridge, D. Creed Gembrook Cockatoo best players: R. Causer (1 goal), N. Strohbeck, B. Turner. Powelltown 23.14 (152) d Alexandra 10.4 (64) Powelltown was way too good for Alexandra as they produced a good four-quarter performance to come away with a very convincing win. Powelltown didn’t blow their opposition away in the first half, but they still led by six goals at the main break. The third quarter was where Powelltown played some of their best football as they hammered home 9 goals to 2 to race to an 80-point advantage at three-quarter time. The last term was at least a bit more even with Powelltown booting 4 goals to 2. G. Newing had a good day for the winners, finishing with eight majors to his name. Powelltown best players: M. Pote, M. Lord (2 goals), J. Mullan. (1 goal) Alexandra best players: T. Horwood, B. Cooper, C. Mullins (1 goal). Yarra Junction 12.10 (82) d Yea 12.7 (79) Yarra Junction has won its second game of the year with a nail-biting three-point victory over Yea. This game was a thriller from start to finish. Yarra Junction got the early jump as they led by 14 points at quarter time but Yea bounced back in the second term, booting 4 goals to 1 to lead by five points at half time. The third term was a

reverse of the second as Yarra Junction booted 4 goals to 1, and they went into three-quarter time with a 14-point advantage. The last quarter was a beauty. Yea was coming back hard and they did boot 3 goals to 1, but it was Yarra Junction that was able to hold on to win by just three points, as they celebrated a great victory which left Yea heart broken. NOW into the second half of the season, the Under 9s, 10s, 12s, 14s and 16s travelled to Upwey to take on Upwey-Tecoma and Wandin, while the Under 11s to Monbulk and Under 12 Girls to Mount Evelyn. On a beautiful winter day, the Under 10s played probably their best footy of the year. The backline was solid and disciplined, and gave the team plenty of rebound. The midfield dominated the clearances, and the boys kept the forwardline open enough to generate 13 scoring shots and six goals. The Under 11s went into to the game quite unmanned, and as a result struggled for most of the game. As always, the boys played hard to the end and did all that was asked of them. The one-sided scoreline didn’t show the improvement the Under 12s Girls showed this weekend. Everyone got involved in the game and tried to lay tackles and all players had possessions this week. It was the best game of the year by the girls and really showed how much progress they have made this year. Great day for footy at Upwey and the Under 12s put together a solid victory. The team took a while to adjust to the small confines of the Upwey-Tecoma ground, but after some scrappy starts to quarters, worked their running game well and created plenty of scoring shots.
