It’s Eva forever By MONIQUE KUZEFF TO PLANT a tree and watch it grow to a size you can no longer wrap your arms around is an experience not everyone gets in their lifetime - but having reached 100 years of age this week Eva Dunstan has got to experience exactly that. Throughout 100 years Ms Dunstan, who has lived in Albury for the past 50 years, has been to a lot of places and done a whole lot of things including visiting Tasmania, touring New Zealand, and going three times around Australia. “So what I haven’t done and where I haven’t been (laughs) is hard to say,” Ms Dunstan said. “In my time it didn’t matter what came up you had a go.” During her childhood in Queensland and into her teenage years Ms Dunstan said when an opportunity presented itself she would snatch it up. “Whatever came up I’d take it by the horns - as far as I could see, life was too short,” she laughed. Through her smile and giggles Ms Dunstan admitted that she had not been bothered over the last few years but was grateful for a lot of things she was still capable of doing. “I’m lucky enough I can still talk and hear but it’s getting that way now that your eyesight is practically going, “ Ms Dunstan said. Even at her age Ms Dunstan said she was still competent enough to live on her own and in her own home with only the occasional hand from her son with the groceries and gardening. Ms Dunstan said her secret to reaching 100 years old was keeping herself busy all the time. “My idea is to keep myself occupied through reading, knitting and playing the accordion - but I gave that up because it’s too heavy to put on my lap now.” Throughout her lifetime Ms Dunstan worked a variety of different jobs including milking cows, working in a cafe and a hotel, and being the matron of a grammar school for 25 years. School today is nothing like what it was all those years ago Ms Dunstan said, after visiting her old school in Queensland in 1993. “When I went to school we rode on a horse and now kids go to school on a bus,” Ms Dunstan said. “We used to have a paddock and a farmyard

out the back where we would milk cows but there isn’t a cow nor a horse in sight anymore.” Ms Dunstan said there were only 10 students
in her class at school and she knew of only three others that were still alive. “Two sisters and another lady are the only oth-
ers from school who are still alive and the rest have all gone - but that’s just the way it goes.” “But life still goes on,” she laughed.

Plants aplenty for rail trail By ERIN SOMERVILLE
THE future Rail Trail through Wodonga is set to become a haven for the active and nature alike, as Parklands Albury Wodonga continues work on ‘birdscaping’ the corridor. Around 600 new plants were established along the trail on Sunday to encourage local wildlife into the future recreational area. Volunteers from Parklands Albury Wodonga, which is a community managed and community driven social enterprise, are already seeing the benefits of their work on the Wodonga section of the Rail Trail which they began a year ago. “When we arrived (on Sunday) we found rosellas in the area that we planted at the end of winter last year,” Parklands Albury Wodonga Community Ranger Ant Packer said. “It’s encouraging.” The weekend’s work included introducing native shrubs and flowers, ground covers, and grasses to the old rail corridor. The native flora is expected to keep maintenance teams less busy, while adding much-needed natural beauty to the trail. The Wodonga section of the Rail Trail between Thomas Mitchell Drive and Lawrence Street was only given the go-ahead last year. Funds to improve the corridor through planting flora have been provided by Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.
“It’s pretty degraded and there is not much in the way of native vegetation.” “We want to provide a natural space as well as cut down on maintenance.” The different varieties of plants are also expected to see the trail in bloom all year round. Parklands Albury Wodonga is encouraging residents interested in improving the Rail Trail or adopting a section to join in. Ice storm is rising By MONIQUE KUZEFF
WITHIN a week, two people were charged with over 50 methylamphetamine related offences last month in Albury. Ice is endangering health and endangering the community, Member for Albury Greg Aplin said. Over the weekend Mr Aplin got behind the ice reporting campaign that aims to encourage the community to
report suspicious drug dealings with the manufacturing or supplying of ice. Ice is a big issue nationally and when you scale down to regional towns it's obvious that this drug is posing a serious threat to communities. There has been a large increase in the recorded rates of amphetaminerelated offences in regional NSW, according to the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) . In 2014, there were 256 cases of
deal/traffic amphetamines in Albury which was a 53 per cent increase on the 167 offences recorded in 2013. Mr Aplin said the drug wasn’t just reaching young people in nightclubs but was a widespread activity that was taking place throughout the community. “The problem is greater now than it's ever been and is an issue that involves a variety of ages in our community,” Mr Aplin said.
“It's affordable and available and people are experimenting.” Earlier in the year, a group of young people turned themselves in to the police after causing havoc while using ice, Mr Aplin said. “They realised they were a risk to themselves and that they were endangering their own lives.” Mr Aplin encouraged the community to contact Crime Stoppers if they saw any activity they might assume
could relate to dealing. “You might see someone carrying an item that could be identified as a manufacture or supplier. “This drug is illegal for a reason it is devastating to people's health and makes people perform very peculiar acts.” Your call can make a difference - if you detect any suspicious activity do not hesitate to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Darkest day’s hour of need as beyondblue helps out ON THE darkest day of the year, the community will gather to bring some light and hope to those who need it most. Television presenter and beyondblue ambassador Brad McEwan will be in Albury on 21 June to share his experience of losing two family members to suicide. He will appear at this year’s Winter Solstice for Survivors of Suicide evening at Albury’s QEII Square. The popular Ten News sports presenter lost his father and brother to suicide and is a dedicated advocate for breaking down the stigma and silence of mental illness for families. He will be joined by fellow speakers 2010 Australian of the Year and mental health professional Professor Patrick McGorry AO and international keynote speaker, educator and writer Dan Haesler in helping the Border community mark the longest night of the year. The Winter Solstice event, now in its third year, has continued to gather a groundswell of support from the local community to shed light on the silent grief of suicide and to support those in the community who have lost friends or family to mental illness. Mr McEwan said to lose two family members to suicide is something you never get over. “Mental illness has had a profound effect on our family,” he said. “The scars stay with you forever. You might not see the scars, but they’re there.” Survivors of Suicide committee spokesperson Stuart Baker said the aim of the Winter Solstice event was to bring understanding and support to those dealing with the tragedy of suicide - the leading cause of death for Australians between the ages of 11 and 44. “This unique event is about helping people to understand that they’re not alone when dealing with the silence and stigma of mental illness,” Mr Baker said.
Brad McEwan will share his story of being affected by suicide at this year’s Winter Solstice event. 140504 Picture: COURTESY OF BEYONDBLUE ‘The only way to support those who have lost someone to suicide or are contemplating taking their own life is by talking about it. ‘We encourage the broader Albury Wodonga community to come together for this event. “Our hope is that the Winter Sol-
stice will become a national day to raise awareness, to engage those people affected by suicide and to support those surviving it.” Author and crossword guru David Astle will MC the evening, which will also feature performances by local band The Northern Folk, Mary Buck-
ley Harper, The Scots School Pipe Band and Scots School Dancers as well as a performance of Papillon by James Fallon drama students. In addition to the presentations and live entertainment, fires will help ward off the winter chill while curry, soup and traditional warming winter
wine gluehwein will be provided by Albury Hume Rotary Club as well as coffee, hot chocolate and tea by Inspired Coffee. The Winter Solstice will commence at 5pm on Sunday June 21 at Albury’s QEII Square, with official proceedings from 6pm.

A doggy delight
DOG owners now have a better place to play with their four-legged mates following the opening of the upgraded Logan Road off-leash dog park on Sunday. The newest pet-friendly facility has been delivered through a partnership between AlburyCity and Mars Petcare to keep the Border’s canine population healthy, social, and happy. The facility boasts agility equipment, tables and seating, and taps. More than 250 Mars Petcare associates participated in a working bee earlier this month and AlburyCity Mayor Kevin Mack said council was thrilled with the results. “Together with Mars Petcare, council provided resources and support to make the improvements in line with our 2013 Albury - A Dog Friendly City Strategy and I want to congratulate everyone involved - from both organisations - for their hard work,” he said. “Their efforts will progress our strategy and help to develop accessible, inviting and sustainable open spaces for residents with companion animals without affecting other park users." Nigel Harrison from Mars Petcare said taking time out of the office to get involved in the community was something Mars associates were very passionate about. “We believe that pets make a better world, so we are passionate about helping to make the world a better place for pets. The Logan Road Off-leash area is one of five in Albury that pet-owners will be able to use to stretch their pets’ legs, as well as their own. Additional off-leash areas include Oddies Creek Park, Alexandra Park, Heathwood Park, and Gordon Street Reserve.

It’s just $5 to help out James said a small donation towards people with spinal cord injury could have such a big outcome. “It’s a concept that has the potential to help a lot of people with the injury if we can get it as big as we want to get it. “It’s fantastic to give people a day off for a small donation to a good cause.” James said the fund-raiser had helped him to get out and about and involved with getting the idea off the ground. “I definitely think any money towards spinal injury research and spinal care is a huge benefit,” James said. “There are a lot of people around with spinal injury and unfortunately it costs a lot.”
By MONIQUE KUZEFF WHO doesn’t mind a day off from work? For just $5 not only will you be in the running for a break from the desk, but you’ll also be helping to raise money and awareness to support those impacted by spinal injury. Big Day Off (BDO) is a fund-raiser concept that was inspired by Ovens and Murray footballer James McQuillan, who suffered an injury to his spinal cord last year during an AFL match in Albury. The concept aims to raise funds for Spinal Cord Injuries Australia (SCIA) and SpinalCure Australia to help towards research and finding a cure.
So, how do you get on board? BDO chairman Jon Retford said the day off did not eat into annual leave and he encouraged businesses and staff to register on the website for their support. “Businesses donate for a day off for their staff but as business leaders they deal with planned and unplanned days off anyway, “This is just a way for them to have fun and get their staff excited by a $5 day off.” Mr Retford said James wanted to make awareness of spinal cord injuries much bigger than just a footy issue. “Unfortunately most people with the injury are under 34 and this has a big impact on families.”`

Connected to fulfilment
Local Diary

AN overseas break from a boring bank job brought focus to one of life’s drifters. Will Slater said the trip made him assess his life and values and question everything he knew about himself. As a teenager he faced times that challenged who he was and where he fitted in and as a result he made some poor decisions. However today, as CEO and co-founder of Our Connection, Mr Slater lives to educate young people about how it is possible for them to find their way and to fulfil their dreams. After being kicked out of three schools in his home town of Bendigo, Mr Slater moved to the Border where he finished Year 12 at Catholic College Wodonga. “I struggled with finding friendship groups and fitting in, and as a result of that I made some poor decisions,” Mr Slater said. “As a teenager there is uncertainty about where you’re going and what you’re doing.” He went on to spend four years working a job at a bank, trying to calculate how he might progress in the company but with time he felt as though it was not what he wanted to do with his life. “There was nothing that was really inspiring me to continue to work there. “I decided to take a trip to Indonesia because I wanted to discover more of our global community and this was the first time I had been in a developing country.” There he met people from the Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation (GK) who showed him around some villages and he was astounded by what he saw. GK aims to annihilate poverty for 5 million families by restoring the dignity of the impoverished. “Families of 15 to 20 people who were living in something the size of a bathroom. “It was pretty heartbreaking to see

that,” Mr Slater said. And then he met a young girl by the riverbank who played in the mud with just a plastic spoon and cup. “She looked up at me and gave me this incredible smile and I was so amazed to see around the dark and glum that she was incredibly happy with what she had. “To me it seemed like absolutely nothing and I contrasted that to what we have over in here and realised that kids are playing with iPads and mobile phones and are still not happy with that.” This made Mr Slater think about what success and happiness meant to him and whether working a nine to five job that he wasn’t overly contented with was something more than what it appeared.
“I came to realise that I wanted to find complete fulfilment in what I do.” “I was absolutely convinced in myself that there was something out there that was more for me and it was a mind shift.” Mr Slater said his experience overseas was truly an eye-opener which helped him realise how he could overcome his own challenges and better understand who he was. “My passion lies in education and working with education to make that suited to young people and to give them the best opportunity they could possibly have.” Our Connection aims to work with young people to help them gain a better sense of themselves, Mr Slater said.
CEO and co-founder of Our Connection Will Slater. “I feel as though I can connect and engage with young people who are struggling like I once struggled, “I’ve been through it - I know what it’s like and I know what I’ve done to be able to get myself through it.” Mr Slater aims to empower young people to learn the skills and strategies that will enable them to answer those questions they ask themselves.
DUE to unforseen circumstances, the Living Well After Cancer Program, due to run in Albury on 20 June, has been postponed. All is not lost however. Organisers have managed to gain a new date for the program to come to the Border - 22 August, and more information will be sent in early July.

Albury, the melting pot ALBURY is making its mark as a melting pot of multiculturalism as the city officially becomes a Refugee Welcome Zone. The city joined more than 112 local government areas across Australia as it signed a declaration on Saturday to officially recognise its status as part of National Refugee Week. The Refugee Welcome Zone status will see the city committed to welcoming refugees into the community,
upholding the human rights of refugees, demonstrating compassion for refugees and enhancing cultural and religious diversity in the community. Mayor Kevin Mack said he was proud to see the city become part of the Refugee Welcome Zone. “We are proud to continue our custom as a multicultural society that welcomes residents from around the globe,” he said. Albury has played a ma-
jor role in taking refugees and immigrants in the past with the former Bonegilla Migrant Camp sitting on the city’s doorstep, and Albury now home to many Bhutanese, Nepalese, Congolese, and other refugees from across the globe. This year’s pledge from Albury was made at the weekend’s colourful Family Fun Day event that showcased some of the best that refugees and their culture has to offer to community.

ON TAP Something a little different
SINCE its relaunch in December, Beer DeLuxe has gone from strength to strength, building on their reputation of offering local and interstate craft beer and providing fine casual dining with a vibrant atmosphere. Beer DeLuxe Manager Matt O’Kane said the new menu offered a wider choice of local craft beer and encouraged people to try something new when they came in. “We want to give something different to the people in the region,” Mr O’Kane said. “People are becoming more discerning in their choices and are looking to explore different tastes.” After its refurbishment, Beer DeLuxe showcases a sophisticated yet casual front with Paddy’s Irish theme still vibrant at the back of the venue - when it comes to live music and uni night Wednesdays, Paddy’s is the place to be. For those afternoons or nights when you are on the prowl for a basic but filling meal, Beer DeLuxe offers a ‘back to basics’ approach with simple food done well. “We specialise in beer food,” Armada Hospitality Director of Operations Craig Shearer said. “It’s our spin on tapas, with a focus on shared plates, burgers, pizzas and other items made with freshest of ingredients.” Beer DeLuxe has also expanded to the streets, with a future vision to hold an annual street festival in Albury. This year in May marked their first festival, which was proved a huge success that featured tasting samples and full-sized beers from 11 different participating breweries. There has been word that another beer festival will be held in October, but this time it will incorporate wine, cider and entertainment from local and interstate musicians that will run all day.
Make leisure a pleasure
Every Sunday the venue holds ‘Stone and Wood Sundays’ featuring $4 schooners, house wines and basic spirits between 4pm to 6pm with live music every Sunday. Their newest weekly offer is the Tuesday night $15 ‘Burger and Beer Deal’ where you choose a burger to go with the selected craft beer of the week.
Mr O’Kane said he wanted Beer DeLuxe to be in the forefront, where staff can talk more with customers about the beers. “We are happy to give people samples of our beers if they are unsure," he said. “When they (the customer) are hesitant, our knowledgeable staff are always happy to jump in and help out.”

FRANCHISEE Steve Bryson and his team at Harvey Norman Flooring know flooring. It’s easy to say, but with 38 years in the industry Steve has the runs on the board. “We can supply all of your floor covering needs -carpet, vinyl, bamboo, timber laminates and rugs,” he explained. “If you want to bring in your house plans or your measurements, we can help you. We are happy to better any quote on the same product.” Steve and his team are also happy to give you any advice and help you may need to ensure you get exactly what you want for your brand-new house or to give you the look you want if you are renovating. And it’s not just set and forget for Harvey Norman Flooring either. “We sell the floor coverings and then install them,” he said, adding that the experience extended to their trusted installer. “I’ve known our installer for as long as I’ve been in the business.” He has also had a very long association with Harvey Norman - an association that has taken him around Australia and given him a lot of experience across different climates and conditions. “I opened the first franchise for Harvey Norman in Victoria in Nunawading in 1994 and I’ve been all over the country,” he said. And now he brings all of that experience and knowledge to the people of Albury/Wodonga. Harvey Norman Flooring, 94 Borella Road Albury phone (02) 6023 0870.

Apt celebration of key events
CHRISTINE Capewell is an experienced civil celebrant who lives in Corowa and works throughout the district, helping individuals, couples, families and groups celebrate life through relaxed and meaningful ceremony: namings, weddings, vow renewals and end of life. Her business tag line says it all: ‘Ceremonies to celebrate your journey from beginnings to endings...and lifetimes in between.” As a qualified trauma, grief and loss counsellor, she knows firsthand the pain and sense of bewilderment that people experience when faced with the death, or the imminent death of a loved one. Throughout our lives, each of us pen a story that is unique and quite remarkable. As a funeral celebrant, Christine is also a writer and storyteller. She provides a planning service and a structure (called a Journey Remembered) that help you recall and record the important and memorable moments in life. In listening to people’s life stories, Christine becomes the keeper and carrier of their dreams and memories, the one who then converts them to written form. None of us ever know when our time is up and just spending some time remembering and reviewing and recording all that has happened can be a rich, rewarding and freeing experience. For those who know their end time is approaching through illness or age, the process of writing takes on a more profound dimension. When people do leave, what legacy or footprint will they leave for the generations to come? How will they know what gave our life meaning? What formative factors shaped our world view? What did we value, what did we delight in and how do we want to be remembered? The Journey Remembered process allows for discussion, review and documentation, so vital in the creation of a fitting end of life record or ritual? one that has been uniquely crafted for you and expressive of your wishes. This extensive, yet richly rewarding process also provides

Lester and Son Funeral Directors are also proud to announce that Premier Building and Construction have recently received an award for “Best Commercial Building in the $1-$3 million dollar (regional) division awards from the Master Builders Association of Victoria. Lester and Son are the only accredited member of the Australian Funeral Directors Association on the border. This is an assurance of quality as members are bound by a strict code of ethics and will provide a high level of professional service. Lester and Son have recently opened a new funeral home at 49 Thomas Mitchell Drive, Wodonga to complement their existing premises at Wantigong Street, North Albury. With a growing demand for personal, professional funeral care apparent, they began to develop a vision for a new, modern funeral facility in Wodonga which would comfortably service the expectations of an increasing population. It was an opportunity to expand the quality funeral care that had been offered for so many years in Albury, to families across the river in Wodonga. The new building in Wodonga offers many features and has proved to be a popular location.
The chapel area is very flexible to provide for smaller, more intimate funeral services, larger services with refreshments for up to 100 people, or it can be opened up to comfortably seat over 200 people. With standing room available at the back of the chapel and high quality speakers and multiple screens, over 300 people have easily been accommodated at services. The large on-site car parking facilities together with the adjacent street parking allow easy access for families. State-of-the-art audio visual technology has been installed to present memorable photographic tributes and there is the capacity to record or webcast funeral services as required. As well as at-need funerals, many families like to pre-plan. A plan made ahead of time is very reassuring, allowing you to record all your wishes. It can relieve the stress of relatives having to make arrangements and decisions in a time of sadness and grief. Pre-planning also allows time for comparison of funeral services, making sure that people choose the service that offers them the best value and makes them feel comfortable. At a pre-planning interview you can talk about different funeral options, get an estimate of costs, ask about ways to set aside funds to cover expenses or any questions that you may have. You can record your final wishes, which can be held at the funeral home until needed.

Plan a fitting farewell for loved ones A PRIVILEGE - that’s the way celebrant Barbara Kruse sees the opportunity to officiate at funerals and other major events in people’s lives. An experienced and soughtafter celebrant, Barbara has been conducting weddings for seven years and funerals for the past 18 months. She said it was an absolute privilege to to be asked to lead such an important and significant event in a family’s life, and it is a responsibility she does not take lightly. “When you are farewelling a family’s loved one, there is only one opportunity to get the service right,” Barbara said. She has a simple philosophy when it comes to such an important event - “nothing is too difficult” and she works with a family to ensure that the service is a loving farewell and reflects the family’s wishes and that of
the life of the person they have lost. Of course, every service is different - some, particularly for someone who has lived a full life, can be a joyous celebration of a life lived to the full while it can be very different when someone has died suddenly, at a young age or in tragic circumstances. Barbara said it was important to respect those different scenarios and to work with the family to ensure that their wishes are met and the funeral is reflective of their loved one’s achievements, interests, passions and life’s milestones. “A civil service is more responsive to the family’s wishes - it is not as ritualistic as a church service,” Barbara said. Her aim is for her services to be more personalised and less one-size fits all and she prides

herself on her attention to detail. Families and friends can participate in the service as much or as little as they wish, or feel able to do. Barbara is there to help and support through all stages of the service. For Barbara, it is important to learn about the person she is honouring and to tailor the service to them and to their family. Additionally, as Barbara has a military background she understands the requirements for a service for ex-service personal and works with the RSL to ensure an appropriate farewell. Her style has been described as “eloquent and warm. It is a description that Barbara takes pride in and something she aims for. Ensuring a dignified exit FUNERAL preplanning should be something to consider, according to the experienced team at John Hossack Funeral Services. Most people plan ahead - they plan for holidays, marriages, the future education of their children, and of course for retirement. Dying is as much a part of life as being born, but most people avoid funeral planning. Why? Because most people do not spend time thinking about their death. There are many advantages in planning ahead and obtaining a funeral bond. This includes: The opportunity to put endof-life wishes down on paper; Does the person want a traditional, religious service or are they more interested in being cremated and having their ashes scattered at sea? It is a chance to choose the music, the dress code or theme for the funeral service.
ing with the funeral director they get a better understanding of a life story. John Hossack Funeral Services work with their clients to record their fondest memories and hobbies (maybe they are an enthusiastic fisherman or motorcyclist?). Relieve your family from the trouble and hassle of planning your funeral; not only does prepanning a funeral put your mind at ease but equally as important, it eases the burden on family during their time of grief. By preplanning, the decision making process and financial burden is not left to the loved ones during the overwhelming, stressful days following your death. After all family and friends are the most important people in one’s life. Most families assume that there is enough in their loved
one’s savings account or life insurance policy to cover funeral costs, but often there are insufficient funds available to plan the beautiful and worthy funeral service they would like to have. To assist with this why not begin saving for a funeral now and thinking ahead. This doesn’t have to be a permanent decision; most of us are hesitant to pre-plan our funeral, as we think of a funeral as a permanent choice, and that once our decisions are made and the papers are signed, it can’t be reversed. This is absolutely not the case. Should the client change their mind and wish to make alterations or additions to the funeral plan, the funeral director will be more than happy to assist. To learn more about how to preplan your funeral, call the experienced team at John Hossack Funeral Services on (02) 6041 3855.

Flying on the wings of angels
ANGEL Gowns Australia wholeheartedly values the healing ability of giving and sharing with both love and compassion. Angel Gowns Australia is a registered not-for-profit charity organisation that provides services to bereaved families who have experienced the misfortune of a miscarriage, stillbirth and babies who die through being born prematurely or from an illness. Out of pure love and kindness their seamstresses volunteer to handcraft stunning angel gown garments from donated wedding dresses for those little angels who don’t quite make it home from hospital. Each angel gown is wrapped in tissue paper and placed in its own beautiful white gift box which is then presented with a crystal and a mother of pearl angel pendant and a poem to keep. These gifts are then donated to hospitals who gift them for no charge to those families who have experienced such tragedies. With over 300 volunteers consisting
of women who have also experienced such tragedies or been affected by the loss of baby, and supporting businesses, Angel Gown Australia’s mission is to provide understanding and support for families who may like to express their grief through art and craft. Through the incredible community support of volunteers from across the country and around the world, Angel Gowns Australia’s service has become prominent and known. Angel Gowns Australia also serves those families who are experiencing or have experienced the neo-natal intensive care unit, or are impacted by a child’s illness or special needs. The charity understands the necessity of bereavement and support services and that is why it has established various programs including My Tiny Sibling Program for families and siblings of an early born child, and also the Tutu Program for parents and families who are faced with unexpected challenges that come with having a child with a life-threatening illness or disability.

Memorialising precious lives
CONWAY Funeral Home is one of Wodonga’s oldest and most trusted funeral homes, and the first choice of families from Wodonga and the surrounding communities for more than 40 years. For this reason, Conway Funeral Home believes that the true value of what they do is found in helping families create healing moments that allow them to love, share and truly memorialise the memories of a life-time. Life is all about
building relationships and sharing memories; and while living life means different things to different people, having a loving event of some kind celebrates the choices made, the relationships shared and honours the memory of a loved one. While many families find great value in following the traditions of those gone before, some choose to commemorate life with more unique reflections. Whatever your wish, Conway Funeral
Home is here to assist with planning whatever is meaningful to you. They understand that the passing of a loved family member or friend is a very difficult time for those who are left to cope with their loss. Conway Funeral Home endeavors to provide the very best individual care and support through this troubling time. They know that you’re more than just a client and they would like you to feel
that you’re a part of their own family regardless of nationality, culture or religion. They are a traditional family company with a modern approach and would be privileged to serve and tailor a funeral to meet your needs. They understand how important memories are and how this is a final opportunity to say goodbye. When you are ready to plan your funeral, come and see them.

Dead-set dino disaster Jurassic World (PG) Starring: One big, unkillable dinosaur, and lots of smaller ones GENETICALLY re-created dinosaurs in a futuristic theme park run amok, and people who can’t run fast enough get eaten. But it’s not what you think - because you saw this movie about 22 or so long, long years ago. Then, it was called Jurassic Park. Now, it’s called Jurassic World. Oh, and 22 years ago, the characters were
more engaging. The human need for “bigger, faster, more teeth" has seen the boffins create a super T-Rex (what, a real T-Rex is no longer scary enough?) It’s sad, really, to see what was once a ground-breaking film devolve into this. Because the truth is, lifelike dinosaurs broke fresh ground a quarter of a century ago. But now, when empty CGI spectacle rules, it’s all pretty ho-hum. And the plot of the new
epic plays out exactly like the original. Kids lost on the island, under threat from the unkillable monster, enter lantern-jawed hero ... and it’s paint by the numbers from there. Chris Pratt is OK as the hero and principal dino-hunter, but no-one else really rates a mention. Disregarding all the above, it’s packing cinemas and will no doubt continue to do so but that’s more of a comment on us than the film. - Jason Beck

Music steeped in tradition
BUNNA Lawrie and Coloured Stone, Australia’s premier Aboriginal band, originally came from Koonibba, South Australia, on the Nullarbor Plains and are now recognised world wide. This year will mark 38 years of constant touring by Bunna Lawrie and Coloured Stone. Coloured Stone was formed in 1977
by Bunna Lawrie, lead singer and songwriter, combining rock, ska, reggae with a unique Aboriginal sound incorporating traditional instruments such as clap sticks, didgeridoo, bundawuthada (gong stone) and traditional language. Every performance from Bunna and Coloured Stone is a memorable musical experience, full of Aboriginal culture
and meaning. Coloured Stone is Bunna Lawrie on lead vocals, rhythm guitar, didgeridoo, clap sticks and gong stone, with a fourto-seven-piece backing band including lead guitar, didgeridoo, bass guitar, backing vocals, dancers and drums. Coloured Stone is at the SSA Club in Albury Wodonga, on 19 June.

Streaming is now mainstream So how do you purchase today and expect the home entertainment system to be relevant in 10 years’ time? It is not too difficult to answer. The first rule is to purchase on build quality not features. It is significantly more expensive to build the unit with top grade components than place a cheap microchip programmed for the bells and whistles of the day. It might sound strange, to have your television with the least amount of fashionable features as possible. All those features are available in separate boxes, eg Apple TV, various Android boxes and the like. The boxes will outdate every few years and for a relatively small amount you can update the box not the television. The question appears that televisions today have far more pixels than mine, so they must be better. This is not necessarily true, A budget 4K (UHD) television will probably not perform as well as a 10-year-old television with a high degree of video processing while watching your normal television and pay television programs.
Why is this information muted in the different medias? Many of the best-selling brands of yesterday, developed around a win for customer is a win for the brand, word of mouth and hardearned endorsements from magazines like Choice and counterparts around the world held currency. I found these two quotes an analogy for how the electronics market is played out. Jimi Hendrix once said “I don’t consider myself to be the best ... I don’t like compliments, they distract me”. Recently Kayne West was quoted “I’m a creative genius, there is no other word for it”. The two quotes sum up the old and the new world of electronics. Today it is possible to own one box for your visual media, One box for your audio media, a quality set of amplified speakers and a television with an on and off - the most important function. We cover all medias and set up to be ready for the next generation. Not pretty, not fashionable, it does not make the new generation electronics companies richer, however it works for all members of the family with less clutter.

THE world of information streaming has become mainstream not only for music and radio content - now the future of television viewing will evolve the same way. What does this mean for a regular household? Iview, Netflix, Stan, MOG, Pandora, Deezer and many other streaming products were never heard of a few years ago. Many new arrivals in the future will cloud the market further. Impacting on today’s market are additional market forces that dictate to you what you should buy in such a professional way you’re not even aware of very clever market manipulation from the top end of the market. Internet manipulation, professional blogs, paid for reviews and tracking cookies add to the confusion. One of the more recent comments from a client came from a person who purchased a 4K (UHD) HDMI cable at “half price of $100” online so he was ready for the future. He could have purchased the same performing high speed HDMI Cable through a specialist retailer for $10. This is one of many stories I commonly hear.

Much to look at in paper
LAST month (May) the Victorian Government released a discussion paper on apartment design. It aims to involve the community in a discussion about what is appropriate and what is not. This is particularly important as Victoria’s population
grows and medium density is no longer confined to the inner city. Increasingly, apartments are being built in outer suburbs and regional centres as investment opportunities and affordable buying options. More people, including families and the elderly, are choosing to live in
them, while many of us invest for the future in an apartment to rent out, commonly through self-managed superannuation funds. Many factors unrelated to design need to be considered when choosing an apartment. Location is the obvious one -

not just the town, suburb and street, but where in the town, where in the street. For example, is it close to transport, is it close to a noisy main road, is it walking distance to the shops? The neighbourhood is also important - are the buildings well maintained, creating a good impression for future buyers and would-be tenants? If the apartment is in a block, its location in the block is also important. If you buy a property with a view of the bins or the carpark because it is affordable and many others in the building have attractive treetop or town views, yours will compare unfavourably if it is on the sale or rental market at the same time in future. Owners corporation issues must also be considered. The Section 32 vendor statement provides information about this, but it is worth seeking more, such as the minutes of past meetings to determine whether any big expenses are looming. Also, check the building rules and try to find out whether it’s well run by an active committee of management and well maintained. The government discussion paper recognises a balancing

act: Victorians are entitled to quality of life and there has been controversy about the size of some inner city apartments. But it must be financially viable for developers to undertake such projects or they will be unwilling to do so. Some of the design points raised are important for potential buyers to consider. For example, how much light and sunlight does the apartment receive? Are any of the rooms reliant on borrowed light? What is next door to the building - or likely to be there in future? How big and functional is the apartment. For example, if it is a one-bedroom apartment could two people live comfortably together there? How high are the ceilings? Is there adequate ventilation? Does it have any storage? How convenient is the layout - for example, is the balcony filled by an air-conditioning unit? When buying an apartment try to ensure it will appeal to as many buyers or renters as possible. Even if you plan to live there, one day you may want to sell it and if you settle for second best because it is affordable your potential for capital growth may be compromised.

Design has the future in mind EVERY home/property you go to has something that makes it different from the rest. Sometimes, there are intriguing additions or placements that create the challenge to work it out or ask “why”, or more importantly, “what can I do with it to maximise efficiency and use.” The design of our feature home for this week makes it quite apparent that the designer was looking to the future, creating a family home, that in the future could quite easily be turned into accommodation for the extended family that guarantees independence and privacy. Perhaps, it could be a Bed and Breakfast to capitalise on Yackandandah’s reputation of a town of intrigue and interest. Located on the outskirts of Yackandandah township, with only one adjoining neighbour, entry to the home is via a main entry that opens to either a huge formal lounge with solid fuel heating and a cooling air-conditioner. The room is carpeted and has window furnishings and light fittings. The main and second bedroom are accessed by a hallway and share the main bathroom although it serves as a semi ensuite. The kitchen again, is of good proportions with an upright electric stove, rangehood and dishwasher as features along with timber cupboards, pantry and a tiled floor. Being at the front of the ranch-style home, you have a window allowing views over the beautiful low-maintenance garden. A sliding door from the kitchen leads to a second lounge or family room that also has timber cupboards and a sink - the size is quite good. The third and fourth bedroom are at this end of the home along with the bathroom and toilet. Outdoor living is predominantly covered and north facing with a combination of flower and vegetable gardens. A tandem carport is located on the Twist Creek Road end of the home, while at the other end there is adequate room for either a garage or workshop/storage. Any alterations or changes in use or structure as mentioned are subject to council approval. The vendor is looking to downsize, and to encourage an early sale they have reduced the price to $307,500.

Setanta O’hAilpin went on a goal-scoring spree for the competition

Cash splash for national championships STATE funding has been granted to Albury Holbrook Polocrosee Club as it prepares to host the national championships next year. Member for Albury Greg Aplin announced on Monday that the NSW Government would be delivering $7500 to the club for the 2016 Australian Polocrosse Nationals. The local club is well-known on the polocrosse circuit for its high-standard facilities, having hosted national and international polocrosse stars on its grounds in the past. The funding is part of the 2014/’15 Sport and Recreation Events Program which aims to support events that provide participation opportunities in international and national standard competition or participation opportunities at the community level that provide
a focal point for community engagement. Mr Aplin said the grant would help boost participation and interest in this sport. “Sport is a huge part of our way of life and the NSW Government recognises that,” he said. “I congratulate the Albury Holbrook Polocrosse Club on their successful application and look forward to seeing the Albury Polocrosse National Championships attracting participants from across the polocrosse community. “It is a great pleasure to provide the funds to increase sport and recreation participation opportunities in this electorate.” The Australian Polocrosse Nationals will be hosted by the local club from 18 to 24 April in 2016.

There had been one point in it at half time when Corowa Rutherglen was leading 24-23 at the break after being up 12-10 at the first quarter break.
