Give me five, ladies! THERE was plenty of wooing, blushing and cheering as ladies from across the coast joined some of our hottest local male celebrities at this year’s Mix FM’s Give Me 5 For Kids (GM5FK) Ladies’ Luncheon last Thursday. More than $25,000 was raised to help provide support for families with sick children, as well as buy much-needed equipment for hospitals. Turn to page 8 for story and more photos. Rego is a no-go By JOLENE OGLE LOCAL police are “astounded” at the amount of drivers caught driving unregistered vehicles, with 170 people caught so far this year. Noosa Heads Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said it was shocking to see so many peo-
ple driving unregistered cars without compulsory third party insurance. “The main reason, we find, is people simply forget to pay their registration now stickers aren’t sent out,” he said. Sen Sgt McReight said better policing technology that scanned number plates was also increasing the
number of people caught driving unregistered vehicles, plus other traffic offences including unlicensed drivers. Three people appeared in Noosa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday charged with driving an unregistered vehicle. One man was fined $1500 for the offence, which also included a fine for driving while disqualified,
while another man was fined $600 for driving an unregistered car on the road, and a third man was fined a total of $1000 for three traffic offences including driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle. The Department of Transport and Main Roads stopped sending out registration stickers from 1 October
2014, but has since released a smart phone app that allows users to check the status of their registration, or that of a car they are going to drive. The app is available by searching Qld Rego Check at your smart phone app store and allows the user to quickly check the registration status of any Queensland car. 1181353-LB17-15

A MUM’S battle against cancer has been significantly helped by the community with a total of $21,000 raised at last Thursday’s ‘A Night for Nicole’ fund-raising event at Noosa’s Waterfront Restaurant. Organised to support Peregian Springs’ family the Tsesmetzis as mother Nicole fights to save her life against a rare bone cancer ‘chondrosarcoma’, the event was completely booked out and could not have been a greater success. Nicole who was diagnosed in July 2014 has since undergone radiation therapy and numerous surgeries to relieve horrendous pain caused by a tumour in her back. Unfortunately while the 8cm tumour that was pushing on the spine and spinal cord was removed from Nicole’s back late last year, surgeons weren’t able to remove the entire tumour and in December last year Nicole underwent 10 radiation treatments. The cancer has however now spread to Nicole’s lungs and the ongoing treatment needed is currently only available overseas at the cost of $100,000. Event organiser and Nicole’s aunt Tammy James wished to
thank the community for their overwhelming support. “We would have been stoked at $10,000 so to have more than doubled that is just incredible,” Tammy said. “The money raised will take a big chunk out of funds needed for Nicole’s treatment.” Special thanks go to Noosa Waterfront for hosting the event and the various businesses that donated products for the evening. While $21,000 is a significant amount, there is still a large price tag for the Tsesmetzis’ to bear. To support the family, tickets can be bought in a major raffle to be drawn on 20 June at the Pool Café in Peregian Springs, from 6.30pm. Up for grabs are five major prize packs kindly donated by business owners including a vehicle service up to $400 at Pacific Motor Group, a $100 clothing voucher by Boom Shankar, one week accommodation at 10 Hastings Street for four people, and so much more. Tickets are only $2 and Nicole’s family will be going doorto-door around Peregian to sell them. A fund-raising website has also been set up at www.fightforlifefund.com.

More markets on the way THE Noosa riverfront may soon be host to monthly twilight markets with discussions well underway between members of Noosaville Business Association and Noose MP Glen Elmes for the project. The initiative follows the trial of the Thomas Street markets over six months last year and while the markets proved popular, issues were raised in regards to parking. Local business owners were concerned that an appropriate traffic management plan wasn’t put in place by the market owners to stop people from using private property as parking. Mr Elmes said he believed the proposed new markets would be held in a different location to ease the problems surrounding parking. The Noosaville Business Association’s Paul Blundell said the markets, which will sell a variety of ready to eat foods, showcase local artisans and live music and provide activities for the kids, had been a top priority following the trial and that he is excited to bring them to life. “At the moment we are looking at around 50 stalls to start with, with the focus on, but not limited to, local products,” Mr Blundell said. “The aim is to create a place where locals
Last year’s Thomas Street Markets were popular but parking woes sparked concerns from local businesses. can relax and mingle with their families on a Friday evening.” Strongly supportive of the initiative, Mr Elmes said the markets were a great way to not only enhance community spirit but increase tourism and provide another reason for visitors
to extend their weekend stay in the shire. “There is currently no night market in Noosa,” Mr Elmes said. “This is a free community thing to go to, where you can bring your family along and enjoy the atmosphere without an admission fee
and therefore can be enjoyed by all members of the community.” Mr Elmes is confident that the markets will complement rather than detract from the trade of local businesses in the area. “These markets will bring extra people to the area, people will come to the markets and then spread out going to the bars and restaurants afterwards,” Mr Elmes said. “And by having the markets adjacent and away from the local businesses it will free up places like Gympie Terrace allowing the markets to complement the businesses already there.” Businesses in the area will also be encouraged to take part in the markets, with stalls of their own to showcase their products. “People want to have somewhere to relax and chill out on a Friday evening,” Noosa Boathouse owner and member of Noosaville Business Association Phil Bradford said. “Noosaville is so rich in food and it will be a way to utilise the riverfront.” The next step for the proposal is council approval. If that is given it is hoped the markets will be up and running in September.
Memorial wall a touching tribute
By JOLENE OGLE ELEVEN people appeared in Noosa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday charged with drug offences, including one woman who will answer 14 drug-related charges at a later date.
The new memorial wall and stone at the Coast Guard headquarters, Munna Point. “It’s such a great idea to have the wall,” he said. “And they’ve done such a brilliant job. It’s surrounded by luscious landscaping and the wall is beautiful.”
Mr Elmes said he was proud to be among those who gathered on Sunday to witness the opening of the wall, including a number of families who had already placed plaques in memory of their loved ones.
David Gillies has been appointed the memorial wall manager. For any inquiries about the memorial wall or to place a plaque, phone the flotilla headquarters on 5474 3695.
Of those who had their matters dealt with on Tuesday, the youngest was a 17-year-old renderer who was charged with three drug-related offences including drug possession. The man’s Black Mountain home was searched on 26 March, where police found 45 grams of cannabis, plus utensils used for smoking the drug. The man was placed on a four month good behaviour bond and ordered to attend the drug diversion program. No conviction was recorded. A 24-year-old concreter also pleaded guilty to three drug-related offences including the possession of 0.6 grams of ice and a glass pipe. The man was placed on a six month good behaviour bond and ordered to attend the drug diversion program. No conviction was recorded. An 18-year-old chef pleaded guilty to possessing drug utensils including a cone piece, hose and scissors and was placed on four month good behaviour bond and ordered to attend the drug diversion program. The remaining defendants had their matters adjourned to a later date.

MORE than 60 people gathered at the Coast Guard headquarters on Sunday to celebrate the opening of the Munna Point memorial wall. Made with a sandstone-look and designed to face out to the ocean, the touching memorial wall is a place for people to spend time remembering their loved ones. The wall has been five years in the making and Coast Guard commander John Milland said the team was absolutely thrilled with the outcome. “We’re very proud of the wall,” he said. “It’s our way to engage with the community.” Mr Milland said the community had always supported the work of the Coast Guard, so the volunteer organisation wanted to give back and offer a place of remembrance for those who had been lost at sea, had their ashes scattered at sea or simply had an affinity with the river or ocean. “The memorial wall is open to anyone,” Mr Milland said. “We have provisions for over 1200 plaques and since we opened the wall, we’ve had a high response with over 50 requests for plaques.” Coast Guard patron and Member for Noosa Glen Elmes said the Coast Guard had done an amazing job building the wall.

Legacy budget delivers MAYOR Noel Playford has presented a draft Noosa budget focused on maintaining the shire’s infrastructure and delivering a $4.7 million “missing link” for the hinterland road network. The draft was based on no increase in the general rate, but the preliminary budget meeting adopted a 1.3 per cent increase. This will increase the cash balance from $772,000 to $1,350,000. The amended budget, including a new financial sustainability policy, will go before council for adoption on 29 June. “This is my last budget and therefore a legacy budget for me,” Cr Playford said. “It delivers on a commitment I made prior to the election, while a new financial sustainability policy promises to help keep council’s finances in good shape long-term.” If adopted, the budget provides $4.7 million to seal the full four-
kilometre gravel stretch of Dr Pages Road and part of Kinmond Creek Road at Cootharaba, in a project set to boost hinterland tourism. “This has been on the table for more than 20 years and when I stood for mayor at the time of de-amalgamation I promised the community I’d prioritise it,” Cr Playford said. “I’m pleased to announce that not only will this budget allow us to begin this project, it provides the funds needed to complete it, partly from savings achieved through increased efficiency. “Sealing Dr Pages Road will allow for residents and tourists to enjoy a round trip from Tewantin out through the hinterland centres of Boreen Point, Kin Kin, Cooran, Pomona and Cooroy without travelling on a single gravel road. “It will also provide an attractive route for hinterland cyclists. It’s the missing link and it stands to boost the towns’ tourism capacity.”
The draft budget has been released, with councillors expected to adopt the budget on 29 June. Cr Playford described the budget as a “triumph” for staff and councillors reflecting a whole-of-organisation effort to cut waste and improve efficiency.
Clint takes Jurassic holiday By KATIE DE VERTEUIL WHEN local pharmacist Clint Coker began researching the price of dinosaur eggs for his curious four-year-old granddaughter, he did not think he would find himself travelling to the Gobi Desert to find his own. However that is indeed what happened, the Noosa resident last month taking the journey of a lifetime on the unique ‘Dinosaurs of the Gobi Expedition’. The 16-day trip had been organised by Odyssey Travel and was hosted by editor of Australian Geographic John Pickrell. Accompanied by Mr Pickrell, and palaeontologist Dr Tsogtbaatar from the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, Clint joined three other Queensland travellers all eager to visit sites of previous dinosaur discoveries. Describing the adventure as a giant treasure hunt, Clint and the team spent nine days in the East Gobi Desert prospecting for and excavating fossils. Flying to Ulaanbaatar the capital of Mongolia, the first day was spent visiting the Institute of Palaeontology in Ulaanbaatar where finds are processed for the new museum. “From Ulaanbaatar we flew south to an airstrip servicing a new mine in the East Gobi, driving two to three hours following obscure tracks in the sand and gravel to base camp,” Clint said. “This consisted of an expedition truck and trailer, a relic from a soviet expedition, one Gir and some small tents which only survived the first night. “Numerous sand and dust storms forced

“That exercise has freed up over a million dollars to be spent on a host of brand-new initiatives,” Cr Playford said. “While future councils will not
be able to achieve such big gains as this, the new financial sustainability policy will help deliver continued improvements. “The budget also includes $300,000 to commence planning and design work for the Rufous Street redevelopment at Peregian Beach, which we are working on in collaboration with the community. “In many other areas this is a business as usual budget as it provides the funds needed to continue the upkeep and timely renewal of council’s major assets and infrastructure.” Also included in the budget is $60,000 for the refurbishment of the Sunrise Beach Shopping Centre, $85,000 for the refurbishment of the Noosa Heads Surf Club public amenities, $63,000 to rehabilitate the Sheraton boardwalk in Noosa Heads and $100,000 to give the shire’s playgrounds a new lease on life. spent the next nine days prospecting for and collecting fossils for the Institute of Palaeontology’s collections. “On the very first day we found numerous fossils and two of my fellow travellers, who unlike me had some prior experience in Winton and Richmond searching for dinosaur specimens, were gob smacked,” Clint said. “Not only with the number and quality of fossils found but with the fact that the majority were simply photographed, had the GPS co-ordinates noted and covered up.” Faced with sandstorms, ticks, scorpions, the inconvenience of a drop dunny with hessian surround that kept blowing away and an outdoor five-litre pump shower with cold water, Clint said the experience certainly wasn’t your usual vacation.

Tycoons in training on bottom line NOOSA District State High School (NDSHS) is gearing up to host Australian Business Week for the 12th straight year, and life is about to get very interesting for many Year 11 students. Australian Business Week (ABW) offers students the opportunity to acquire the skills necessary to run a company. In an exciting one-week intensive program, students experience what it is like to run a multi-million dollar company and make decisions which have real outcomes. ABW co-ordinator Alison Rexa says each team has to manage their own multi-million dollar business. “This year students will be running a Consumer Electronics Retail store, and with the help of a business mentor will discover the variety of skills needed to be part of a successful business in the 21st century,” she said. “Through the week, students in teams of 14-15 students will perform tasks having formed and named a company, with each student assigned a role. They will then review an ABW manual covering the key business areas, make decisions about price, product, their target market, staffing and training. This years’ 15 teams
must also develop a marketing strategy and host a trade display complete with promotional material and produce a 30 second commercial featuring their business. “Finally, each team will prepare a written company report, explaining decisions made and the outcomes and the impact on their company’s performance and finally, deliver an oral presentation to an audience of business people, teachers, students and parents. It makes for a full week, but will leave each participant with some valuable skills and the courage to make a difference in their chosen field,” she added. Without the support of parents, students and teachers, ABW simply wouldn’t be the success it has become, but it’s the support from local businesses that has seen the program develop in recent years. One such business is the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. Having committed to sponsoring ABW for another year, branch manager Geoff Edwards said the Community Bank was looking forward to providing mentoring support to go along with its financial assistance. “Assisting in the mentoring process during ABW is all about giving the students help where

One of our Community Bank board directors, Fred Broomhall will also be on hand to assist during the week of mentoring,” Geoff said. “I encourage any business owner who hasn’t been to ABW to come along as some of these kids are going to make great employees for some of the coast’s top businesses in years to come,” Geoff added.
Twilight fair saved by a whisker
The ABW program will conclude with an Awards Ceremony at NDSHS to be held on Thursday 25 June from 7pm. Trade displays will be open in the main hall from 6.30pm for families to view the efforts of our students. A LOCAL volunteer is fighting for the lives of nine hoop pine trees that sit on the bank of the river in Tewantin as council looks to make a decision on whether or not to cut them down. Sunshine Beach Bushcare volunteer co-ordinator Justin Campbell said he was anxious to protect the trees that could be up to 90 years old. “The hoop pines were planted by the early farm settlers ... they are an important part of the environmental landscape at Tewantin and were established long before the residential development,” he said. Council confirmed a complaint has been received in regards to the nine hoop pine trees that are located on councilowned land at the end of Cambridge Court, Tewantin. Noosa Council’s civil operations manager Allan Hull said council was in the process of making a decision in regards to the trees’ future. “Council doesn’t generally remove healthy trees unless there are mitigating factors such as a safety concern or evidence of property damage,” he said. “However, council does adopt a ‘good neighbour’ approach to managing trees near property boundaries.” Mr Hull said council has consulted with Cambridge Court residents and other stakeholders and will make a decision on what action, if any, will be taken “in due course”.

Noosa’s crowning sports glory NOOSA sport has really shone over the past few weeks. Former Noosa junior golfer Steven Bowditch, speedster Samantha Johnson and Noosa lifesaver Ian Young are all in the headlines. The big-hitting Bowditch led from start to finish to claim his second win on the rich US circuit with a 18 under victory at the Bryon Nelson title in Texas. Former coach and Noosa pro Shane Healey was impressed. “It’s a massive effort to lead wire to wire especially against such a quality field,” he was quoted as saying. Steve should be very happy with himself, as he hasn’t had a dream run on the cut throat American tour. His battle with depression has
Benny’s
beat BENNY PIKE
been well documented, making his 14-year professional career a pretty torrid affair at times. I remember Steve’s early amateur days with his highlight coming third at the world junior championships. Locally, he didn’t have to go for far for some opposition. World champ Richard Moir and Australian winner Jon O’Sullivan are both from Headlands Golf Club. I suppose the only thing better than winning $1.2million, is the victory gives him a start in next year’s US Masters.
I hope this win, will finally tip this gifted Peregian boy into the arena he deserves. The Sunshine Coast Sports Federation held its monthly athletes breakfast to present nominees their reward for their efforts from January to May. Again a quality field of national and international performances in eight sports - three world records, eight national team members, one World Cup and two Oceania champions. The oldest 33 and youngest 15, and most eyes firmly fixed on Olympic or Commonwealth Games. Tewantin’s 15-year-old Samantha Johnson was well and truly in the mix after her glittering performances at the Oceania athletics
championships in Cairns. Her first Aussie team and she came home with a gold and silver and massive smile. It was silver in the 100 hurdles and gold in the 4x100 metres relay. Samantha’s refreshing attitude was another winner ‘I had no expectations going into the event and coming home with the medals at my first International meet, is just amazing’. Fellow Noosa athlete Ashleigh Reid was another winner, bouncing back after a layoff to claim the Open high jump. The win maybe the encouragement needed to keep her focused towards the Gold Coast Games in three years. The Queen’s Honours list provides us with some wonderful
locals, to have given so much to others. Veteran Noosa lifesaver Ian Young was deservedly among this year’s list after a 43-year-service of helping save swimmers, sailors and surfers in the Noosa and Sunshine Beach area. The current Supporters Club president was awarded an Order of Australia Medal. With too many achievements to list, Ian fondly suggests ‘being involved with the design and development of the aluminium jet rescue boat was the stand-out’. He also mentioned the installation of the rescue beacon at Alexandra Bay as a turning point. To Ian, wife Mary-Jo and family, thanks and well done. Until next time.
Charity overflows for sick kids By KATIE DE VERTEUIL HELD at Sheraton Noosa Resort and Spa, the event saw the likes of Mark Darin, Todd Widdicombe, Lincoln Lewis, Chris Flannery, Matt Filippi, Peter Kuruvita, Brennon Dowrick, Matt Adamson, Stephen Priestly and Richie Geron strut their stuff which got raffled off in the name of charity. Masterchef’s talented Ashleigh Bareham was also there to support the event. Mix FM’s GM5FK appeal sees an array of fund-raising throughout the month of June for the needs of local paediatric patients. To date, more than $30 million has been raised for invaluable medical equipment and to provide support for families with sick children. This is the ninth year the luncheon has been held in Noosa and MIX F’s GM5FK co-ordinator Krystal Moore wished to thank all those getting behind the local fund-raising initiative. “We have once again received an overwhelming amount of support for this year’s event, which was completely sold out,” Krystal said. “Each year, it just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Please explain WARREN Truss, the Infrastructure Minister and Federal Member for Wide Bay needs to explain why he is so set on implementing ‘Workchoices on Water’ with his proposed changes to coastal shipping rules? We know the budget papers are all about hitting the more vulnerable in our community but what is little known is the impact budget changes will have on our maritime industry. The budget papers flagged changes for foreign vessels operating in Australian waters, including ‘better aligning employment conditions for ships in Australia with international standards”. This is code for international workers being paid as little as $2 an hour, working for 12 months in a stretch, seven days a week. And if you are thinking slave labour, you would be correct in your thoughts. Labor’s Anthony Albanese says if an Australian company seeks to move freight, maritime workers should be paid in accordance with Australian standards. Albanese goes on to say: “The government’s proposals would decimate the industry, the existence of which serves Australia’s economic, environmental, and national security interests”. Given our strong focus on national security, and the need to ensure skilled jobs for Australians and this government’s supposed commitment to the Great Barrier Reef, this policy position is incomprehensible. Either we need to ensure national security or we don’t? The United States has some of the strongest protection for its domestic shipping industry in the world, through the Jones Act, which requires that all goods transported by water between United States ports be carried on US-flagged ships, that those ships be constructed domestically, and that they are owned and crewed by US citizens and permanent residents. The United States, Japan, China, Indonesia and the Philippines ensure they deliver domestic freight securely, safely and predictably by having strong rules surrounding coastal trade? Warren Truss’s changes to shipping could spell disaster on a number of fronts - maritime jobs, skills, fuel security, national security and pose a threat to the environment. Decimating
A BIG thumbs up to the driver of the recycle bin collection truck in Bushlands Estate today. A neighbour’s little boy rushed out with their yellow topped bin, only to have the bin spill over on the road. When the driver saw what was happening, he jumped from his vehicle and helped the boy pop everything back into the bin. Thankyou young man, you gave a little boy a moment of joy! Especially when you slowed down to wave to him on your way out! He called you “Hero for the day”!
Right on to the cheery barista at Aromas, Hastings Street, who makes delicious hot chocolates. Thankyou for making a dreary morning so bright!
A BIG thumbs down to the man who didn’t even stop to see if anyone was crossing the pedestrian crossing on Mary Street, Noosaville. One more step and you would have run me over!

LENSCAPE
THANKYOU to Kathy Graham for this gorgeous photo of an echidna enjoying a stroll in the Noosa National Park. If you have a photo of Noosa’s wildlife or landscape, we would love to see it. Send your Lenscape entry in high resolution to newsdesk@noosatoday.net.au the maritime industry of this great seafaring nation makes no sense. Lucy Stanton, Labor Candidate for Wide Bay.
Melissa misled WHILE 21-year-old Melissa Murray is to be commended for expressing her concerns for the Great Barrier Reef (Letters, 4 June), she has been misled into believing that UNESCO’s decision not to class the Great Barrier Reef as ‘in danger’ was due to the efforts of the Queensland Labor Government. In truth, the UNESCO decision followed the actions and representations of the federal LNP government, via Greg Hunt, the Federal Minister for the Environment. E.J. Ash, Boreen Point.
Batting on IN RESPONSE to Tony Wellington’s letter, we, the residents of Wallace Park, really do not know what he is on about. He states that if council were to relocate the bats occupying Wallace Park for more than three years, it would cause more residents to suffer and the council “would be remiss in our duty of care to all residents”. Well, let me tell you Mr Wellington, no duty of care has ever been given by council to the residents of Wallace Park, or surrounding areas. Plenty of duty of care and preference has been given to the bats in the area. All sorts of excuses have been dredged up by council over the past three and a half years since the bats decided to invade the park ... dispersal doesn’t work (yet it has been found to be successful by a number of councils and botanical gardens) ... we need special permits (no longer applies according to the Minister of Local Government) ... bats are a protected species (even though under legislation enacted by the LNP, they can be shot) ... bats are essential to pollination, and growth of rainforests because they emit seeds in faeces (yet go and have a look at the devastation the bats have caused to Wallace Park forest, and residential gardens ... trees have been stripped, the family of wallabies which did inhabit the forest, gone, birdlife and other wildlife squeezed out). Council claims that it has sympathy and empathy for the residents’ plight and misfortune of having to daily clean patios, verandahs, rooves, vehicles, furniture, walls, windows and doors and pools because of pollution from bats yet when residents complain no-one from council will even bother to come out and view the mess. There has been no empathy from council or its representatives to those residents
who are trying to sell their properties, or to the stress they suffer due to the stench, and noise emitting from the plague proportions of bats in Wallace Park. The closest Tony Wellington has come to that is to advise that residents in the area install double-glazed windows and doors, which he seems to think will keep out the noise and smell, let alone keep residents imprisoned in their own homes. Council claims that the bats are not connected with disease ... yet the Queensland Department of Health lists nine diseases. When issued with Journal articles, and QUT studies, council’s response, both from staff, and councillors including Tony Wellington was that there have “only been three deaths” ... well Tony, how many deaths do you want? What is a satisfactory number? In truth this has gone on far too long, and the one thing that affected residents can do is ensure that Tony Wellington and others of the same ilk do not get re-elected at the next local government elections. Kay Fielden, Tewantin.
Strange at the club WE WOULD just like to recap on a very disappointing afternoon at the Noosa Yacht Club on Sunday. It was a busy time as there was a band playing and the place was humming - the four of us were looking forward to sitting back and enjoying ourselves. After asking, unfortunately there were no more tables or chairs available inside, so we thought we would sit in the new outside area. Everything was wet after a shower so we asked one of the staff for a towel to wipe the table and chairs - after a wait had to go back and ask again. Were given a few paper towels and we did the job ourselves - no problem. Started to put up the umbrella that was by our table just in case it rained again and an older bloke rushed out and told us not to put it up as it was only for sunny days (?). We told him it was broken and would not go up anyway and he basically accused us of breaking it. His attitude was rather off-putting and we felt like we were too much trouble. When we finished our drinks we left and went to the new bar and grill - Mr Jones and Me and enjoyed some more drinks, wonderful service and a lovely meal. Money that was going to be spent at the yacht club! Service is a wonderful thing and when you don’t get it you always remember that you didn’t and are likely to always go elsewhere as we did. Karen Johnston, Noosaville.
Austerity unpopular NOOSA Council’s special budget meeting last Friday highlighted significant problems within council. It seems the mayor’s rigid austerity program has disaffected staff and they have appealed to councillors for help. During councillor debate over the budget there was disunity and dissent before the mayor’s proposed zero rate rise was defeated in favour of a 1.3 per cent increase. Though lack of funds to complete capital works and failure to offset cost increases were precursors, it was the need to curb the mayor’s dictatorial style that was paramount. Noosa’s reputation has been tarnished and ratepayers need to elect a progressive council. John Lobb, Peregian Springs.
Motherhood claim WHAT a fuss! The (Federal) Treasurer makes what is virtually a “motherhood and apple pie” statement, which all but the policyless Opposition know to be true, and the wrath of inept descends on him. “Get a job to buy a house” - t’was ever so; always will be. Our first house was paid for in four years. Two full-time jobs and two parttime jobs did the trick. Geoff Roach, Cooroy.
NOOSA Today posted to Facebook announcing the twilight markets could soon be back in Noosa. We asked our Facebook likers what they thought of the return of the markets. Shandelle Kenane: “Yes, yes, yes! We really need to be able to do more family fun things around our area. Noosa needs to do more things like this. It’s great for small businesses, families and the community spirit. The handful of negative people always seems to win and the rest of our community lose the enjoyment of trying new things, meeting new people and supporting our local businesses.” Andrea Stokje: “Yes, as local business owners we support this event for Noosaville.” Cecilia Young: “Fantastic. So pleased to see this is still a possibility.” Catherine Teluma: “Yes to the markets. More, more, more.”

RETIREE WORKSHOP TYPICALLY, a third of our adult life is spent in retirement. The trick is to know what you want and why you want it, so you can create the space in your life to enjoy your ‘buzz’. ‘Buzz’ doesn’t just happen. It’s easy to be distracted by the pitfalls and think retirement’s one long holiday, all about money or that it’s enough to stay busy. ‘Buzz’ needs to be designed. And it’s much easier with an objective validated resource, the Retirement Compass, to find your buzz - to reveal what really energises you and what holds you back. Retirement Compass Workshops at Sunshine Beach, 3 and 4 July. Reserve your place by visiting youcan@retireandflourish.com.au or phone (02) 9247 7535 or 0410 320 404. FRIDAY ENVIRONMENT FORUM SITUATED centrally on the Sunshine Coast, the Yandina Creek Wetlands has resulted from continuous tidal flooding by the Maroochy River of former sugar cane land. For the last 10 years it has provided precious habitat for a great number of water birds that are now listed as ‘uncommon’ or ‘rare’. Greg Roberts, retired journalist, avid birder and conservationist believes that it is a gem worth preserving. He has been engaging community support for some time to see the wetlands saved as important habitat rather than sold for alternate uses. Mr Roberts will be the guest speaker at Noosa Parks Association’s Friday Environment Forum on 19 June. Join the audience at the Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville, from 10.30am to hear about the Yandina Creek Wetlands. Coffee and a chat will be available from 10am or meet Valda in the car park at 8.30am to enjoy birding in Wallace Park. All are welcome. Relaxed lifestyle ON OFFER is a chance to live in one of Sunshine Beach’s premiere addresses; Kiamba Court. Live surrounded by multi-million dollar properties with sublime ocean views, all within easy reach of Sunshine Beach’s charming village, the sparkling beach and Noosa National Park. Number four is set on a large 703sqm block with great views from its high northern allotment down to the coastline as far as Point Cartwright.
An inviting Mediterranean theme inside and out with terracotta tiles and neutral tones creates a sense of relaxation and calm behind the unassuming exterior of this home.
Two separate living areas, one with a built-in fireplace, offer plenty of space for the whole family to relax, while a covered balcony is the ideal place to enjoy a cuppa and take in the ocean views.
You will feel as if you are on a coastal holiday where you can rest, rejuvenate and take in the stunning views.
The heart of the home is the galley-style kitchen that features granite benchtops, quality appliances, gas cooking and provisions for a plumbed fridge.
Living is spread over two levels, with four bedrooms on offer to comfortably accommodate a large family, or plenty of guests throughout the holiday seasons.
The island benchtop provides a great breakfast bar and is the perfect place to prepare or serve food.
This home is light and airy, spacious yet cosy and as the new owners, you can simply move in and enjoy the beautiful property. Life doesn’t get much better in such a sought-after location, positioned next to the timber boardwalk to the beach, and right next to the National Park with all the beautiful beaches and walking tracks. Don’t miss your chance to view this property before it is sold.

Loan literacy at low ebb ACCORDING to new data, only 41 per cent of Australians are confident they know enough to have the right home loan to suit their needs. The statistics come from a recent survey by industry superfund-owned bank ME who said the data was cause for concern. According to the survey, only 15 per cent of the next generation home-buyers aged 18-29 years old feel they have enough information and understanding to choose a suitable homeloan. ME Head of Home Loans Patrick Nolan said the statistics showed many Australians didn't have a thorough understanding of home loans and how they operate. “We were particularly surprised that older generations of Australians - those who typically have more exposure to home loans - have low levels of home loan literacy,” he said. “Only 43 per cent of 30- to 49-year-olds and 51 per cent of those aged 50 and over
were confident with their home loan choices, far lower than anticipated. “Financial literacy is a valuable asset and one of the biggest money savers over time it pays to be informed.” The data also found even the most fundamental piece of home loan knowledge - interest rates - has many Aussies baffled. Despite the survey being conducted just days after the last RBA rate cut, 42 per cent of those surveyed couldn’t correctly state the current RBA cash rate. The over 50s were the most knowledgeable with just 28 per cent missing the mark, but almost half (42 per cent) of those aged 30 to 49 and 70 per cent of those aged 18-29 were in the dark about the cash rate. Additionally, more than a third (37 per cent) of respondents were unsure if the cash rate affected how much homeowners pay back on their mortgage, and a further 10 per cent thought it didn’t have any impact at all.
Men were better informed than women, with 46 per cent of females unsure how the cash rate affected repayments, compared to just 28 per cent of men. The survey also found a lack of clarity around home loan features including 55 per cent of respondents who had no understanding of an offset facility, 40 per cent had no understanding of a redraw facility, and 38 per cent had no understanding of interest only replacements. Mr Nolan said it was amazing more Australians don’t understand common home loan features that could help them save money. “Take offset accounts, which are a savings or transaction account linked to your home loan. The value of the offset account is deducted from your home loan when loan interest is calculated, which can save you many thousands over the life of the loan,” he said. The survey also found distinguishing
According to new data, home loan information is confusing Australians. between the different types of home loans was difficult for many people with 58 per cent of respondents admitting they had no understanding of a packaged home loan, 53 per cent had no understanding of a split/ combination home loan, 45 per cent had no understanding of an interest only home loan and 41 per cent had no understanding of a basic variable home loan. “The fact that a large proportion of Australians don’t understand the value of fixing a portion of their home loans is a concern,” Mr Nolan said. “It’s a great time to lock in record-low home loan rates, so people could be really missing out.”
Penalties against contractors for shoddy work TOUGHER penalties will apply from 1 July for contractors who commit building offences, say the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC). The increased penalties are designed to help boost compliance with building standards and provide more options for removing recalcitrant licensees. QBCC Acting Commissioner Kellie Lowe said a limited number of offences currently attracted demerit points and the number of points for each offence was insufficient to deter some contractors from doing the wrong thing. The changes will provide the QBCC with an increased number of demerit offences and an increase in the demerit points attached to some offences. For example, a contractor who carries out defective or
incomplete work and then fails to rectify the work when directed will be penalised 10 points instead of the current two. “These changes will target activities where non-compliance can have significant impacts on consumers,” Ms Lowe said. “For example, inadequate supervision is the main contributor to defective building work. By applying demerit points to supervision offences, contractors will be encouraged to closely supervise work and ensure it complies with relevant standards.”
From 1 July, tough new penalties will help boost compliance with building standards and provide more options for removing recalcitrant licensees. cancelled and be disqualified from holding

Investors pump billions into Queensland property INVESTOR housing finance commitments in Queensland have hit a seven-year high, according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data. State Treasurer Curtis Pitt said the ABS figures showed lending commitments at their highest level in Queensland since the December quarter 2007. “Housing finance in Queensland for the purchase of existing dwellings hit $4.2 billion in the April quarter 2015,” he said.
“Investor finance commitments for the construction of new dwellings remained at $625 million during the same period.
“It’s also good news for employment, with construction activity supporting jobs in the building industry,” he said.
Housing finance commitment is the key to driving the building industry, according to the state government.
“This is an encouraging result which shows that investors have confidence in Queensland Labor’s positive economic agenda.”
Mr Pitt said the Palaszczuk government would continue to work with the property sector to promote Queensland as an attractive place to invest.
“With Brisbane’s rental yields more attractive than other major capitals, further investor interest may switch towards Queensland.
According to Mr Pitt, the figures showed Queensland was open for business and investors were voting with their feet to grab a piece of Queensland real estate.
“Looking ahead, low interest rates are expected to support investor activity in Queensland housing, as investors chase higher yielding investments,” he said.
“This is particularly the case with units, townhouses and apartments, which offer investors the prospect of attractive returns in Queensland.” Thursday, 18 June, 2015 | NOOSA TODAY 29

Get set for Acca Dacca coming to Noosa on Thursday 25 June.
Show will blow you away GET ready to rock and roll all night long to the hits of AC/DC and Powderfinger when one of Australia’s best tribute shows comes to Noosa Heads Surf Club. The Acca Dacca show is a full production set to blow you away with special support from tribute band, Powdered Finger.
Acca Dacca was formed in Brisbane in 2000 by Larry Attard who, like many of us, grew up listening to AC/DC with an admiration for the rock scene they created. Larry takes on front man Bon with aplomb, with a voice so similar to the late great man’s.
Acca Dacca will belt out all the classics including Highway to Hell, You Shook me all Night Long, Thunderstruck and Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Acca Dacca comes to Noosa Heads Surf Club, Hastings Street, Noosa Heads, on Thursday 25 June from 8pm. Tickets are
$15 per person pre-sale or $20 on the door. Noosa Today has two tickets to giveaway to the Noosa Heads Surf Club show. Simply email your name and phone number to competitions@noosatoday.net.au for your chance to win.

THE 38th Annual One-Act Play Festival opens on 3 July at Noosa Arts Theatre, showcasing the three finalists of the 2015 Noosa Arts Theatre National One-Act Playwriting Competition. The annual festival is a must-see, attracting entries from playwrights throughout Australia and many other countries, vying for the $6000 prize pool. This year’s festival will open with ‘Dotty’s Inheritance’, by Queensland playwright Debra Chalmers. Reinvigorating the genre of farce, Dotty’s Inheritance explores the conflicting yet humorous relationships between a family struggling to agree on the way forward for the family business. Yvie Somerville (Dotty), Jannine Ritchie (Rachel), Tracey Simpson (Joan), Julia Verbugt (Debra), Callum, Hamaeck (Robbie), Wayne Neuendorf (Trevor), and Loretta Kung (Candy) will all star in the performance to be directed by Tania Nash. The second play is ‘Needle in the Haystack’, a drama written by Damon Lockwood of Western Australia and directed by Paul Ritchie. This intriguing play is inspired by events in September 2009 in Ohio, America, in which a man was sentenced to death by lethal injection. Frank Wilkie (Dr Robert Allusz) and Steve Mitchell (Richard) portray challenging and thought-provoking roles. The third gem to this year’s quality line-up is ‘Drowning’, a clever farce by Ian Robinson which follows the struggles of a Tamil refugee from Sri Lanka (Mohammed Shamim) who has his hopes of settlement in Australia dashed when an immigration officer (Shaun Bennett) sends him to Manus Island. Expertly directed by Melanie Myers, Drowning is certainly a play with a topical theme. During the festival, audiences will have the opportunity to vote for the ‘Nancy Cato Audience Choice Award’ to be presented after the final performance. Tickets to 38th Annual One-Act Play Festival are adults $31,concessions $27, member/ groups $25, child (U17) $22. Cut-price preview tickets are also available on 2 July when all tickets are $22. For more information or to make a booking contact 5449 9343, visit www.noosaartstheatre.org.au or drop by Noosa Arts Theatre, Tuesday to Friday 9am to 2pm on Weyba Road, Noosaville.

IT had been almost a decade since I’d hung out in Singapore, and back in those days either I had more money or stuff cost a lot less, probably a bit of both. Our mid-range hotel in Chinatown was efficient enough, but there was no room to walk around the bed, let alone swing a cat, and dining out around the Boat Quay area made Hastings Street look like a bargain. For all that, it’s still a vibrant city, fun to walk around and marvel at the West meets East anomalies on every corner, but we got the business done and got the hell out, first stop Johor Bahru, sometimes unkindly referred to as the armpit of Asia. At the other end of the causeway, inside much cheaper Malaysia, JB used to be chiefly famous as the place Singaporeans went to conduct shady deals involving cheap booze, cigarettes and recreational drugs, the supply of which made this chaotic little city a hotbed of crime and violence. Nothing much has changed, except for the arrival of the Iskandar Regional Development Authority. Funded by megabuck investors from Singapore and China, Iskandar is rapidly turning Johor state into the world’s biggest shopping mall, punctuated by country club and marina developments on dodgy reclaimed foreshore. This is but the latest round of a land grab that dates back to the Dutch and British colonists that has seen native rainforest destroyed to

Former President Mahathir is one of the most vocal critics of Iskandar, calling their mega-billion dollar project “the Singapore-isation of Johor”. Piles of dirt and construction sites were all we saw as we drove out to the Pinewood Iskandar studios, to meet our friends, the Pickerings, who are part of the mostly expat workforce making series two of the subscription TV hit Marco Polo, the first big global project out of the new colonial outpost of the venerable Pinewood Studios. While most of the outdoor scenes are shot in Hungary, here on the denuded Johor plains, Kublai Khan’s palace resides in a massive hangar.

dian gentlemen tugging at our shirts and whispering mysterious offers in our ears seemed to know the jig was up. We ducked into the nearest Starbucks to wait out the rain. Melaka offered more. My fascination with the history of the East Indies had led me down many byways, including the establishment of the Straits Settlements, the first of which was the exotic port of Melaka, which under the Chinese of the Ming Dynasty became one of the most important trading ports in South East Asia. As the spice trade grew, Melaka was taken by the Portuguese, then by the Dutch for 150 years, before finally being ceded to Britain in 1824, when it became part of the Straits Settlements trio of Melaka, Penang and Singapore. Singapore’s rise signalled Melaka’s fall as a trading port, but its historical significance has again seen it become world famous, particularly since it was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008. My guidebook told me that the Melakans had stopped at nothing to monetise their heritage listing, and they certainly weren’t kidding. There’s even a Heritage Shopping Mall. But the old town, built around the ramparts of the fortress on St Paul’s Hill and the narrow and winding Melaka River, is still charming, with its nonya cafes serving delicious food that blends the local Chinese and Malay cultures, museums on every corner and plenty of funky bars. It’s a place I’ve always wanted to visit, and perhaps I shouldn’t have waited so long. But life’s like that, and when you’re travelling, there’s always another dream just down the road.

Over a waterside feast of crabs and Tiger beer, the Pickerings made an executive decision to drive up to the historic port of Melaka (or Malacca) with us for the weekend, which gave me Friday free to explore the shady lanes and fleshpots of old Johor Bahru. I asked the cab driver to drop us in the city square, but unfortunately there is a mega-mall of that name and it took at least an hour, and the passing of seven Starbucks before we could navigate our way onto an actual street, by which time a heavy storm had drenched the streets and I found myself shuffling along wet sidewalk tiles in thongs like a 95-year-old. We eventually found a place we really didn’t want to be, which was precisely what I’d been looking for, but it was now hemmed in by malls and multiplex cinemas, and even the In-

The Empty Bowls Lunch will be held at The Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre on 21 June, with all funds raised from the event will support the Community Health and Nutrition program for TimorLeste women run by the TimorLeste Red Cross (Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste). The soup entree at the lunch will be served in handmade ceramic bowls and diners will take
home their bowl as a memento of the event. There will also be a huge raffle of other special bowls. Michael Jenkins, head chef from the Outrigger, has designed a three-course lunch including, naturally, a soup. Over 50 local ceramicists have generously donated bowls including award-winning artists Shannon Garson, Rowley Drysdale, Megan Puls, Anne Mossman, Carol Forster, Yeats Gruin, Michael Pugh, Ellen Appleby and many more. Potters from community stu-
dios such as Noosa Ceramics Centre at Wallace House, and The Ceramics Studio at The Butter Factory Arts Centre and Quixotica, and a few potters from Sydney will also be represented at the event. The Butter Factory Arts Centre Pop Up Exhibition and the Pottery Studio will also be open. Timor-Leste volunteer Anita Pereira said that the problem of malnutrition was widespread across the country. “Malnutrition is ever-present but under-reported in TimorLeste,” Anita said.
“More than half of children are chronically malnourished.” Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste are supporting mothers through education and practical programs to provide better nutrition and basic hygiene and health care for their children as well as supporting villages to grow their own food. The Empty Bowls Lunch costs $65 for members, $80 non-members, with BYO plates, cutlery and beverages. For bookings contact Sharyn on 0416 297 352 or email info@ slowfoodnoosa.com

Health effects of paint chemicals WITH countless products on the market, choosing the right building materials and finishes for any project can be difficult and overwhelming explains Rebecca Park of Paint Place Noosa. Many homeowners are therefore, now seeking information on environmental and health effects of products in an effort to make choices that support the well-being of their families. Poor indoor air quality resulting from chemical exposure can produce a range of negative health effects including headaches, tiredness and lethargy, to more severe effects such as aggravation of asthma and allergic responses. So it is worth being informed on what chemicals are present in the products you choose to put in your home. Many paints contain nasty ingredients that can trigger negative environmental impacts and have serious health consequences.
Below are the health effects of some chemicals commonly used in paints. Glycol ethers: used as solvents in resins and paints. According to the US Environmental Protection Authority, short-term exposure can result in narcosis, pulmonary edema, upper respiratory tract irritation and severe liver and kidney damage. Formaldehyde: used in the manufacture of paints, glues and resins and a preservative in consumer products and can be a major source of indoor air pollution. Formaldehyde is classified as a carcinogenic to humans by the World Health Organisation. Phthalates: chemical plasticisers used in the production of plastics, inks, paints and other products. Several phthalates are reported to disturb the endocrine system and act as a synthetic oestrogen causing deformities in male reproductive organs; premature

breast development and breast cancer Organic Compounds poisonous chemicals that can easily evaporate at room temperature and can remain airborne for up to seven years. Short-term exposure can cause headaches, dizziness, light-headedness, eye and respiratory irritation Ammonia: often a source of the “new paint smell" that can linger for a long period of time after the job is completed. Exposure to high levels can cause irritation and burns to skin, mouth, throat, lungs and eyes. A paint can be low or zero VOC and still include many of other toxic chemicals including those that mask the smell of the paint itself. To be sure your paint does not contain any nasty chemicals, look for independent certification by Good Environmental Choice Australia or other certifying bodies.

Accolades all the weather way
Enjoy your outdoor living zones all-year round with a custom Accolade screen.
WITH winter upon us, most homeowners will be restricted to how much they can use their outdoor areas. Whether it’s the howling wind, pouring rain or dust coming into your outdoor area, Accolade Weather Screens has a solution for you. Accolade Weather Screens has been providing customers with weatherproofing solutions for their outdoor area for more than a decade. Built to go around your existing patio, pergola, deck or outdoor alfresco area, each screen is custom-made
to suit your style and budget. The clear, weather resistant screens contain a PVC membrane that has the optical clarity similar to that of glass with the benefit of being safe, shatterproof and easy to operate. Accolade was awarded an Australian patent for developing an innovative alternative to PVC cafe blinds. Using the same material as cafe blinds, the PVC is stretched into a custom aluminium frame and retrofitted to suit your existing outdoor area.
An Accolade Weather Screen is perfect for weatherproofing your outdoor zone from wind and rain and can be opened using a unique tracking system from the top allowing the ground free of tracks and guides. As well as clear PVC, the screens can also be inserted with sun blockout mesh, tinted anti-glare PVC and insect membranes. To learn more about Accolade Weather Screens, visit www.accoladescreens.com.au to view their full gallery or phone 3102 1186.

Jaxon Orchard is too fast for Beachmere!
Tries abound, seven for Bailey By TRACI HOZIER UNDER 7 WHITE IT WAS a day for tries today with an astounding 17 over two games against Stanley Rivers. Bailey Drinnan crossed seven times, twin brother Cooper and Rhy North scored hat-tricks with Sam Proctor scoring twice. Jai Bruggy and Lukas Byers also scored a try apiece. Cooper Ward and Will Macrae set the platform with their hard running. The most pleasing aspect of the day was the fact that the boys kept their opposition from crossing for any tries which just shows the hunger that these young boys have for tackling. Bailey Drinnan got the Villa Noosa Man-of-the-Match award and coach Troy was last seen hobbling into that establishment for a well-earned drink and a rest. UNDER 7 YELLOW OUR little U7 Yellow Pirates stamped their authority today from the first whistle as they met with Stanley Rivers in home territory. Our Player of the Match, Jaxon Smith was unstoppable as he defended and attacked like a machine with no off switch. Cooper, Beau, Lachlan and Hayden found the try line on multiple occasions with some fancy footwork and length-of-the-field runs. Some impressive tackling by Jack, Riley and Brandon left the Rivers boys with nowhere to go. The boys showed The Wolves who were in charge and came away with what was another exhilarating game. Our Mighty Pirates certainly know how to put on a show.
UNDER 9 BLUE OUR boys had a very physical game against a big Stanley Rivers team. The team showed some great defence, with some awesome tackling from Jhemi, Stoan, Dylan, Declan, Joshy and Benny. Some great ball running from our big guys Lachlan, Jett, Cohyn and Cody and some fantastic running and tackling from our little legends Taj and Roy. All in all, it was an awesome game by the whole team. Nice work boys! Encouragement award to Declan and Man-of-the-Match trophy went to Joshy Palmer. Joshy put in a very tough display after getting an injury, but went back on to help his team. UNDER 10 YELLOW THIS week we played against Stanley Rivers at home. In wet and slippery conditions, our boys started well and really played with teamwork. Charlie Cook and Riley Coster tackled very hard. Dylan was running well out of dummy half and Ryan Fielding-Smith was busy making ground up the field. Jed Bullman scored twice, Jackson Smith and Caleb Hart also scored. A highlight of the match was Jordan scoring a fantastic, hard running try. Player of the match went to Charlie Cook. UNDER 11 BLUE IT was an early trip down to Caboolture Snakes for our U11 Noosa Blue team in wet conditions. Both of these sides have been gaining momentum with good wins in the last few weeks. The result was two evenly matched sides on the day, coming away with a draw.
Ben took home the player of the match award. Thanks John for running the team. UNDER 11 GOLD NOOSA U11 Gold travelled to Beachmere for what looked like wet weather football. But as the teams were announced and the ref blew time on, the clouds parted and the sun shone for a dry track. The game got moving slowly with some up down, up down attack and defence. The Beachmere team, although placed further down the ladder were making the boys from Noosa work hard for every metre. There were a bagful of nice creative tries laid on by the boys from Noosa. Beachmere also came away with a double finding success twice down our left corridor. All in all, it was a fair effort from the boys. Our MVP this week was the ever reliable, Ollie Boulton. UNDER 12 GOLD The boys came up against a well drilled Bribie side who fired straight out of the blocks in a cold, rainy and wet Friday night game of footy. Bribie jumped out to a 16-0 lead at half time due to their explosive centre who couldn’t be caught, but after a half time chat, Noosa came out and proved with a 0-0 half that their commitment in defence is as good as any team’s. Huge hearted efforts from two of our smallest men, 3pts to Jackson Beaumont and 2pts to Kaiden Collins, 1pt this week goes to Ethan Lewis and Heath Robinson who never give up and sometimes try just a bit too hard. Awesome effort all round.
Juniors ensure no barriers By ANITA ANDERSON EVEN threatening rain clouds and the temporary loss of lighting couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm for the latest round of touch footy. Sunshine came out on top in a close encounter with Tewantin in the first match of the under-10 division, with Nico, Charlie and Fletcher all playing well for their teams. A last minute touchdown to the Good Shepherd boys proved to be the difference in their game against Amigos. Ben, Samuel, and Zak showed great skill. The Good Shepherd girls had a hardfought win over the Purple Strikers and Paige, Ellie and Summer had mighty games. Pink Thunder gave it their best but the Pinklets proved too strong this time around. Zahara, Elle and Eve put in great performances. A gallant defensive display by the Banana Splits girls kept them in the match against the STM boys but the attacking qualities of STM got them the win. Curtis, Monique and Ethan all
produced first-rate games. The Panthers girls were always going to be in for a tough challenge in their game with Glen’s Guns and to their credit they defended until the final siren - but the boys turned in a polished performance to take the points. Parker, Levi and Ryan were standouts in this game. Even a gutsy all game effort by the Tewantin girls couldn’t stop the disciplined attacking display of the Warriors boys with Luis, Ruby and Lola standing tall for their respective teams. The under-14/16 girls division got underway with NDSHS 9s (Green) and SBST playing an entertaining game with NDSHS showing great composure to hold onto the win. Great play by Tiana, Paris and Kalen. NDSHS 8s dug deep but GSLC (Maroon) took every opportunity to take the game, with Honor, Bella and Grace leading the way. St Andrew’s produced a whole-game effort in their barnstorming win against the young NDSHS 7s side.
Showing great skill in this game were Tenay, Ashleigh and Ella. The NDSHS 10s team accounted for GSLC (gold) in their match, with Jessica and Darcy looking sharp. Sunshine Rebels showed great teamwork in their win over NDSHS 9s (Blue). Giverny, Keziah and Tyla had terrific games. Our ever-present lighting issue reared its ugly head prior to our last timeslot. Luckily we managed to get play back under way and let’s hope some funding may come our way soon to upgrade our ageing facilities. The Illuminatis had a convincing win over NDSHS 9s (Green) with Cody, Taj and Chaance having mighty games. NDSHS 9s (Blue) and The Magic Touch played out a tough match with NDSHS proving too strong in the end. Tamatoa, Harrison and Jack all played well. Dodgers and NDSHS 7 and 8s could not be separated at the final whistle and played out a thrilling drawn result, with Mitch, James and Max awarded players of the game. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

It’s the Braby Bunch Between the Ron Lane’s
flags people
RON LANE
IN AN era when club loyalty and pride are in danger of becoming a thing of the past, it is indeed very refreshing to visit the surf club at Sunshine Beach and meet up with the Braby family, all six of them; and all involved in some way with the Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving club. First of all there is the father Ron aged 75, his sons Ian 50, Scott 48 and daughter Kim aged 45. Then there are the grandsons Tom 23 and Skye 21 and if we go back to where it all started there is Ron’s dad Noel who started the family involvement by becoming a member of the Coogee surf club. “With dad then me, my sons and now my grandkids it gives our family four generations of involvement in the lifesaving movement… something I feel we should be proud of,” Ron said. “I never got my bronze medallion, so my involvement has always been on the committee side of things… always being a part of the support group.” Ron who was born in Neutral Bay North Sydney and educated at Naremburn Intermediate Boys High School arrived with his wife Jan and family in Noosa in 1979 and in 1980 his boys joined the Noosa Heads SLSC where they obtained their bronze medallions. “This was really the start of our heavy involvement with the lifesaving movement,” he added. “During our years down south I had always been a big supporter of the Freshwater club but never got my bronze. “My love of the beach life came from my dad Noel who was a member of the surf club at Coogee. “As soon as my kids could walk I put them under the famous swim coach Forbes Carlile and this of course gave them a great start.” With the boys heavily involved in the Noosa club Ron eventually put his hand up for a seat on the Supporter Club Committee. “I served for two years on the committee… with the two boys doing patrols and me on the committee the club for us became a family affair.” It was during the early ’80s that the surf club career for both boys really started to take off. “For Scott and I this November will give us 36 years in lifesaving.” Ian Braby said. “Being in a lifesaving club is like being in a good family... the people you meet… I just can’t imagine not doing it.” Ian and Scott trained in the same bronze squad. “In particular I remember two others in our squad, Russell Green who later on became a local councillor and Max Pettigrove who made a name for himself as a swim coach,” Ian said in regard to his basic training. “Also years later when we changed clubs we all joined Sunshine and now 36 years later we are still here.” Ian’s heavy involvement at Noosa started when he joined the boat section, rowing for several years first as a junior then moving up to reserve noosa.starcommunity.com.au
Noel Braby who started the family involvement by becoming a member of the Coogee surf club.
Meet the Brabys... Ron, Scott, Kim (now Langford),Tom and Ian. Picture: SUPPLIED grade. After dropping out of rowing Ian continued in competition by joining the Board of Examiners and officiating at surf carnivals, a duty he was to perform for the next ten years. “By the early ’80s Greenie (Russell Green) had moved up through the ranks to become club captain then in the ’85-’86 season I followed Russ to become captain. “This was a good season for me as I was also named Clubman of the Year,” Ian said. Also in 1988 Ian had filled in the papers to become a member of Sunshine thus making him a dual member, a unique membership he was to hold till 1996. Prior to his appointment as captain Ian had, in 1984 volunteered for the Jet Rescue Boat Team where he was to become a driver and eventually Jet Boat Captain.
“I spent fifteen years in that team and it was some of the best years of my career. “However during this time I had the misfortune to roll the boat over in big four-metre surf in the southern end of Alexandra Bay. “According to tradition,” he said with a laugh, “I had to shout a keg of beer, but I got off with shouting six cartons of beer and three chooks.” During this time the Noosa Supporter Club was in its infancy and many of the staff including Ian came from the ranks of the senior club. “Those were the good old days when we worked under the legendary manager John Ford,” Ian said. “We were on $5 an hour, and a pot of beer cost 45cents. “It was also early in this period that Dad served on the Supporter Club Committee.”
Not wanting to be left out of the activities his sister Kim represented the club in the Surf Girl Quest which was - and still is - a big fund-raiser for the clubs. In keeping with family involvement Scott was also playing his part. On obtaining his bronze with Ian he also went on to the patrol roster and then started what was to become a very active competition career. For two years he rowed boats. “It was during this time that I got my taste of really big surf,” Scott said. “It happened at the Australian Titles on Wanda Beach it was really big but I discovered I had a taste for this sort of competition.” Scott also started to paddle the skis and also developed a heavy interest in surf board riding representing his club at Branch State and National titles. During this time he was elected to the job of board and ski captain and this position placed him on the Surf Sports Committee. Then in 1986 Scott made the break and transferred to the club at Sunshine Beach and this was when his competition career really started to move. “My time at Noosa had given me a taste for the board and ski and having started my swimming at an early age set my eyes on the iron man events,” Scott said. “I ended up competing in the Nutri-Grain Iron Man and was bracketed in the top 20 in Australia travelling and competing all up the East Coast. “This was the period prior to the Uncle Tobys Series, and it was during the Uncle Tobys that I met and trained
under the legendary Rod Taylor.” On top of this Scott also competed no less than eight times in the Coolangatta Gold finishing in the top five in his age group on several occasions. On the administration side Scott served for several seasons as club captain and held a chair on the Active Committee and was heavily involved working with the Nippers. During the winter months, along with club mate Russell Green, he even played a couple of seasons of Rugby League for the Pirates. Scott and wife Simone have two sons, Tom aged 23 and Skye 21 who following the family tradition - they both joined Sunshine. “My love of competing has also carried me through 22 Noosa Triathlons, the first being in 1983 as a junior,” Scott added. “When my competition days finished… I did water safety for the Noosa Tri… as lifesavers this is right up our alley and it is also a great help to a community event.” To Scott and family they feel it is a great organisation. “I always say that we all get more out of it than we put in… the mateship fitness and education has all been incredible.” When we look at today’s society it is sad but true that we give more recognition to those winter heroes who, once a week, chase an air-inflated pig skin around a cow paddock for 80 minutes. However I feel that all members of this incredible family agreed with Scott when he said, “It’s what we get out of it personally that counts.”

Sensational river fishing
Conditions prove a dampener
By JACK MANGROVE WITH the big seas and wet and windy weather, anglers have sought sanctuary in the Noosa River. With the river fishing sensationally over the last week, it will only get better with the approach of the new moon. We will see larger tides in the evenings, so with this there should be an increase in the predatory activity as bait is brought in with the tide. But don’t rule out a fish in the morning as the morning tide is also perfect for the river. Trevally is on everyone's mind, and with a great variety in the river at the moment, we certainly are spoilt for choice. As a table fish, trevally are not up there but if you come across a nice golden trevally these are a very good table fish. Golden trevally are best eaten fresh as freezing tends to soften the flesh. Another strong tasting fish is tailor, and these are also on the chew in the river, both trevally and tailor will take live baits, fresh mullet and dead baits but the most fun is catching them on lures, with surface lures in the low light periods probably the most exciting. Woods Bay is probably one of the hot spots, but the river is full of trevally. Down towards the mouth, big bream are also on the chew, some of these fish have some real size to them and as they are spawning at the moment and are full of milt. Keeping the big ones is probably doing all anglers a service as these are the breeding stocks
By RICHARD MURRIHY
Paul Cornelissens from Victoria caught and released a 53cm flathead and a 35cm bream in Weyba Creek while on a Noosa River Fishing Safari. that help to keep the river plentiful, so if a feed of bream is what you are after, take legal fish and only photos of the big ones, let’s face it these fish are too good to catch only once. Flathead are also prolific in the river at the moment, and there have been some good quality fish boated over the last week, these are by far one of the best fish to fish soft plastics to, pink reds and
earthy colours seem to work the best with prawn profiles also a favourite for a hungry flathead. Another great addition to the soft plastic is sent, do a little research and you will find anecdotal evidence that these wipe on scents defiantly improve your catch. So, on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.
WITH Sheena and Riley just getting ready for the Caboolture trip, the text comes through that softball games have been cancelled due to the wet conditions. If the grounds were like Noosa’s Friday night, we know why. This left the men’s game in the arvo, and by 9.30am it was text out game on, so the Noosa men (and Juniors who play up) travelled down, but had a loss against the Budgie Smugglers in a pretty average performance. A few of the players need to start swinging and not leaving the ball, as we played well below par. This left Sunday where Riley, Lewis, Charles, Dylan and Shinae all would go back to Caboolture for their academy training, but again a message comes through that it’s cancelled due to the weather, followed up with training next Sunday at 8am or even earlier - got to love our kids sport.

The Fiona Winter Realty Noosa Tigers produced their best performance of the year with a 5 goal win over second placed and arch rival Maroochydore at Weyba Road last Saturday. The win extends Noosa’s winning streak to the past 11 matches against the Roos with many of the Tiger faithful surprised but ecstatic with the weekends result. In front of a strong past player’s contingent Noosa’s aggression at the contest and way in which they withstood the physical pressure that was placed upon them was outstanding. The Tigers courage never more evident when young ruckman Lachy Cameron copped a massive knock within the first five minutes of the contest but got to his feet and once again proved a winner for the home side. Noosa’s structure simply held up better with the experienced bodies of Davis and Riley in the middle a big influence on the result. The lively Jed Brain up forward again wowed the big crowd with his sublime skill and finishing being the leading goal scorer on the ground with four. Fellow youngsters Jai Fitzpatrick, Corey Boardman, Jesse Malthouse and Seb Rogers again shone through in a tough encounter showing off their skills and courage over the footy the entire day. While

it wasn’t until five minutes into the last quarter that the game was seemingly out of Maroochy’s reach, Noosa were never headed on the scoreboard from the three minute mark of the opening stanza. Down back, it was Copeland and Tickner who controlled the area for Noosa. Copeland’s first half again irrepressible while Tickner took one of the finest marks this writer has ever seen on the last line of defence. Champion utility Brett Duke controlled his area around the ball the whole day while Noosa’s best was the unheralded Harry Opie. Opie’s blanketing job on Maroochy’s key playmaker Jackson Ryan

RICHARD MURRIHY
With the grounds a bit softer and the balls a bit slipperier the Noosa Under 17s gave their visitors from Bribie a bit of a clean football lesson, taking home
was just outstanding. Opie, who is a very popular figure at the Tigers, is often unnoticed as he continually performs negating roles however last Saturday’s effort was not lost on anyone. Noosa’s depth is amazing in 2015 and with the likes of Isles, Maloney, Gellie, McKittrick and Hill to come back into the senior side; it really was a great win by the Tigers last weekend. The reserves continued their winning streak with a scrappy one point win over a very determined Maroochy. Well done boys, another terrific day had by all at Tigerland and a massive thank you to AJ who organised our past players gathering and
the points and top spot on the ladder 2511-161 to 1-3-9. Next week they travel to Caloundra who sit in 3rd spot 1 game behind them. The under 13’s both had loses with the reds going down in a close one 20-33 against Maroochydore while the blues could not repeat their last effort against Kawana and coping a loss this week. The under 11’s had a win against
for all those who attended. Also a big thanks to Geelong star Paul Couch whose insight into his career and in particular coaches and players he played under and alongside was extremely entertaining. Another massive game for the Tigers this week as they travel down the Bruce Highway to tackle the much improved Moreton Bay who sit in 4th place after going winless last season. Not to be taken lightly especially as Noosa continue to push for that double chance in season 2015. Should be a cracker see you there! Cheers, Pittsy
Kawana 9-11-65 to 3-8-26. Next week sees the last game before the holiday break so we should see some very good efforts put in by the boys who then have a couple of weeks to get over it.

By ANNETTE ADSETT THE semi-finals for Friday ladies tennis were a washout last Friday, but the Division 2 team Coolum Tourists are playing in their final at Maroochydore Friday 19 June - good luck. The Travellers came in third by a very small margin, but since it was a washout, only the first and second teams in the division play the finals. We enjoyed an excellent year of competitive tennis and good fellowship and we look forward to another great season after the holidays. The wet weather has been a disruption, but I noticed that 10 players still turned up Sunday to play between showers. Unfortunately, the junior tennis was disrupted Friday night and the courts were too wet on Saturday. Even with the weather sites on the internet it is still hard to predict when the showers are likely to come. Apologies to the families who were inconvenienced by the late call off on Saturday. Monday night was our regular tennis club meeting and before the meeting, we were able to show our local councillor the new meeting room, which he helped fund. The school holidays are nearly here with a new term of tennis coaching. If you are interested in joining next term, please contact Andrew on 0421 391 505. The social tennis will continue during the holidays and any visitors, seniors and juniors on holiday are welcome to join in. The courts have been busy lately during social tennis, so court hire is only available after 10am on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Don’t forget our night time social tennis on Monday and Thursday nights, starting at 7pm.
Dolphins in their element as the tries keep coming DESPITE grey skies on the drive up, the Noosa Dolphins arrived at Witta for the game against St Andrew’s and the sun was shining hooray! A great run from Phoenix set the tone of the day and got points on the board for the Fins. George then executed two great tries, making sure he found the mud on both occasions. Rory made a number of excellent runs, ending in a fantastic try as well as being deadly in defence. Campbell assisted with an awesome kick and a number of good runs down the wing. Charlie and Harry used their speed to run down the St Andrew’s players with some excellent defence and both got on the score board in the second half. Gus top-scored with three great tries and made a number of good runs for the team. Phoenix snatched man-of-thematch honours with another fantastic run, ball tucked under his arm, to score his second try in the second half. It was a great team effort with lots of passing practice against a good opposition and most importantly smiles all round - mud, sunshine, mates and more mud, what more could a boy ask for? U7 Fins 11 drew St Andrew’s. Travelling south to the Down
Town Clowns, the Reds faced the might of Grammar Green. From the beginning we all knew this was going to be tough. From the outset, both teams tackled each other into submission. Harassment for the ball came from both sides. Brave hit-ups were taken by Thomas, Hamish, Harry and Charlie on to be smothered and felled like giant trees as Grammar sought to stop the Red Machine. Defence of the try line was premium and the Reds gave nothing away. Time and time again the Grammar boys sought to push over for a try only to be held back by Olli, Will and Clay. Jamie’s desperation was on display as held on to his tackles like his mortgage was dependant on it. Brandon attempted to cut up the Grammar defence and ran into several brick walls. Oscar, too, tried to break the stalemate only to succumb to half of the Grammar team bringing their weight to bear. Beautiful lay-off ball came from all players and with special mention to Harry and Charlie who played well under pressure. Atticus sought to tackle the opposition into the ground and inspired the rest of the team to commit to tackles that are improving all the time. Clancy arrived late from his media commitments and brought

head to head in a classic battle. Noosa had the early ascendency only for St Andrew's to fight back and lead 14-5 at half time. The second half was a spectacle of brilliant rugby with St Andrew's trying to cling on and Noosa determined to finish over the top, which they duly did. Our forwards were magnificent. Neither team deserved to lose and as a Noosa parent, hats off to the manner and spirit shown by St Andrew's players and coaching staff, they are a credit to their club and school. Try scorers were Joey, Joel, Matt and Dan (all forwards). Kye and Hunter both landed conversions. Under-10 Fins 24 d St Andrew’s 14. Best: Joel Broderick. Noosa had the superior possession and territory against a tough opponent but didn’t seal the win until the last play of this tense match. With a minute to go it looked like Grammar had stolen it with a converted try, only for Noosa to make one final rally, complete several unstoppable phases and score in the corner. Under-11 Noosa Fins 15 d Grammar 12. Try scorers: Josh Whitehill, James Gelling, Soren Manssen. Best: James Gelling.

Amateur boxers through paces By RON LANE LAST weekend, the Noosa Box Office Amateur Boxing Club and Fitness Centre played host to one of the best amateur boxing seminars ever to be held on the Sunshine Coast. Under the supervision of Mark Evans, Queensland Development coach for Boxing Australia and totally supported and assisted by Israel Kani and his team at Noosa Box Office (NBO), the seminar was seen by all involved as a great success. With 12 coaches and 75 athletes in attendance and the first class facilities of the Noosa Box Office made available, everything was indeed very positive. With the complete endorsement of the governing body Australian Amateur Boxing Association, this type of training camps is without a doubt a major step in getting our amateur boxers on the road to the ultimate goal, the Olympic Games. Evans, who also runs a club of his own at Cooroy called Impact said, “As a result of the development program, we now hold four camps state-wide per year. At home in Cooroy, I have some 14 registered fighters and anything from 20 to 30 other members working on their fitness so that keeps me fairly busy.” Apart from his duties as Development coach, he also holds
the official position of Queensland coach. When asked about local prospects, he pointed to a young lad working out on the mats. “At present in Cooroy, we have that young kid Sam Cameron-Hands boxing in the 57 kilo division. In September, he is one of seven off to Russia to fight for Australia in the World Junior Championships. Just think of that; a 15-year-old kid from Cooroy off to Russia to fight for his country. How good is that?” he asked with a smile. But it’s not just the boys that are making their mark in the tough business of amateur boxing. Sitting on a stool close by was a pretty 16-year-old girl named Taylor Robinson who had recently returned from a trip to the Philippines where she attended a three-week High Performance Camp, Women’s Junior Division. At the completion of the camp, which was attended by mainly Asian countries, the girls got to take part in a local tournament. This all came about because Boxing Australia was able to provide $10,000 funding to send a team of five girls for the three-week camp. Those who participated deemed the camp a great experience. The effort that some made to attend the seminar was emphasized by two coaches in

particular; Chris Wilcox from the K.O.Boxing Gym in Townsville and Chris Bell from Bells Gym in Moranbah. For Wilcox, the long weekend is usually fishing and camping with the family, but this year it was a flight from Townsville with his son to attend. For Bell, it involved an 11-hour drive from his little mining town of Moranbah. However, both agree it was well worth the effort. A major factor in Wilcox being able to attend was the sponsorship they received from Yellowblock Road, Secure Fencing and Wilcox Excavation. “Without this support, we just couldn’t attend, so many thanks to all,” he said. Another couple who made the big effort was
a mother and son team - Tammy Alderton and her 13-year-old son Chase. They drove all the way from Dalby. “Chase had been playing rugby league, but we were not really happy with that, so he switched to boxing and we are much happier. This sport is just one on one. No gang tackles.” “Mums right; I am training for my first fight later this year and after training for nearly two years, I am really looking forward to it.” As he stood to walk away, this 13-year-old extended his hand and said, “Thanks for talking to us. All the best.” A dedicated and wellmannered young man. Good luck to mother and son. The success of the weekend was best summed up by Sunshine Coast boxing legend and coach Darren Obah when he said, “This is absolutely awesome. It is just what we need to help amateur boxing on the coast and all over.” Obahs career gives weight to his opinion. Not only did he hold Australian amateur titles, and represent his country in both Commonwealth and Olympic Games, but as a professional he fought a main event at the home of professional boxing Madison Square Garden New York. And from Israel Kani who hosted and assisted, “It is a pleasure to be the host and well done to all concerned. A major success.”
Bright future for Wombats WITH the local soccer season now in full stride, Cooroora’s own club is enjoying some strong results on the field. Away from the game itself, the club is enjoying some good news, too. Last week, Cooroora United president Tony McCarthy welcomed the Cooroy Community Bank branch manager Geoff Edwards to training to celebrate the purchase of new playing and training equipment. “It’s shaping up to be a great year for the Wombats. With numbers strong in the mini-roos, junior and senior ranks, the future is looking bright for the club and we’re on a real high right noosa.starcommunity.com.au
now,” Tony said. “It’s been some time since we’ve had any equipment updated, so this assistance is definitely appreciated by the club and its members. Sponsors play a key role in supporting any club, but Geoff and his team have been side by side with our club for a number of years now, and we really appreciate the support.” One of the other areas the club is looking to develop is better communication with its more than 250 club members. So the club is currently working on launching its very own app, providing up-to-date information to its players and coaches and promoting the club around the region.
“We’re excited about the project, and it’s the next step towards where we want the club to be. We’re a pretty tight, friendly club and its part of why our members love playing here,” Tony said. For Geoff Edwards, it’s great to see the club growing and making good use of the bank’s financial support. “I get out to training and games a few times each season. I love taking it all in, and it’s great to see so many enjoying playing the game they love and the support so many families, the club’s committee and so many other volunteers pro- Geoff Edwards from Bendigo Bank joins CUFC president Tony McCarthy, coach Sean Orpwood vide,” he said. and the U9 and U10 Jaguars at training last week.
