WARWICK is one of 11 areas in Queensland which are failing to meet immunisation targets, leaving thousands of children exposed to potentially fatal diseases. The city and wider Darling Downs, including Clifton and Allora, have among the lowest vaccination rates in the state for under five-year-old kids, leading the country’s peak medical body to call for parents to take action. The Australian Medical Association said a staggering number of children in the region were not immunised, and blamed the anti-vaccination movement on the Darling Downs. The Sunshine and Gold Coast have also been identified as anti-vaccination black spots. AMA president Shaun Rudd said in some demographics, up to 15 per cent of children on the Darling Downs were left unprotected against whooping cough, measles, mumps and rubella. Overall, almost 8 per cent of one-year-olds and 7 per cent of five-year-olds were not fully inoculated in the region, he said. “We surmise that there are a number of parents in these areas who are opposed to vaccinating their children and that’s why immunising has slipped below target health levels,“ Dr Rudd said. “These vaccination objectors pose a great risk to the community.” The AMA identifies those people who oppose vaccination as the ‘worried well’. “There are parents who are concerned that inoculations may leave their children with developmental disorders such as autism, or spread the disease they’re supposed to prevent, but all evidence shows this is not the case.” Continued on Page 2

Charity tip jar stolen Casey’s tips

By SONJA KOREMANS A LOCAL business owner has given a thumbs down and hands off to the brazen thief who swiped his shop’s hard-earned tips. Warwick Eagle Boys Pizza franchisee John Rye was stunned to find the charity jar at the store had been filched on Friday night. The shop proudly donates tips from generous customers - hundreds of dollars a year - to Muscular Dystrophy Queensland. So Mr Rye and his staff were upset to discover the tips had been stolen from their counter after a busy night. “The thief took off with wads of notes leaving the jar behind,“ Mr Rye said. Friday nights are non-stop at the store so at first no one noticed the money had been stolen until a customer wanting to tip asked where it had gone, he said. “It’s hard to know how much was in the tip jar, it had been there a while on a busy night,” Mr Rye said. “I was about to empty the jar too as I was thinking it was time to send the money to muscular dystrophy.“ Mr Rye said he was surprised by the sly act. “We’ve never had anyone steal our tips, I’ve been here eight years,“ he said. “I don’t want to point the finger at customers as it may have been someone just driving through town.” The store’s CCTV footage could not reveal how it happened and Mr Rye hasn’t alerted police as he said did not want to take up their time. An Indian restaurant in the same shopping centre on the corner of Fitzroy and Albion streets has also been recently targeted by thieves. The offender or offenders attempted to break-in through the back of the Shalimar Indian Restaurant after shutting the centre’s power down last month, Mr Rye said.

Free running dog parks debate is off the leash By SONJA KOREMANS

John Rye says tips he donates to charity were stolen by a brazen thief.

THERE are plenty of dogs on the Southern Downs - and no off-leash parks. That’s how it’s going to remain for at least another year. Southern Downs Regional Council said the facilities are an expense it can’t afford in this year’s budget which is due to be handed down at the end of the month. For years, local dog owners have raised the need for designated off-leash areas, and where the best sites for such facilities would be. The issue was unleashed last budget, with council declining - but indicating it may be on the agenda this year. But SDRC mayor Peter Blundell said the provision of off-leash areas wouldn’t be considered this year either. “The dog park issue is raised regularly and from a priority point of view, it’s not up there at the moment,“ Cr Blundell said. “It is an expense and an ongoing maintenance issue. If we create dog parks, it’s not just about putting up a park and a fence and leaving it. The parks need to be maintained and depreciate over time. “I’m well aware that they are implemented in other areas, but when you are dealing with the sort of debt scenarios that we are, it’s not something that we will be putting high on the list.“ About 2000 dogs are registered in Warwick, with hundreds of warnings issued to owners walking pets off-leash in public areas each year. Jab your kids - please economic factors,“ she said. “Some of the state’s lowest socio-economic regions have the highest rates of immunisation,“ she said. It comes as Queensland Health announced it was expecting more measles cases this month. Queensland Health confirmed the 37th case of measles this year after a person with the disease arrived in Brisbane from Port Moresby this month. In a separate incident, a Queensland paramedic also contracted the infection last month. The number of people being diagnosed with measles in Australia hit a 16-yearhigh last year as scores of travellers brought the potentially fatal disease into the country and unvaccinated children fell victim to it. National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System figures data shows 340 measles cases were recorded in Australia last year, the highest number since 1998. For more information on vaccinating your kids go to www.immunise.health. gov.au.

He said the AMA had called on the Queensland Government to provide mobile vaccination vans and free transport to immunisation hubs. Dr Rudd said getting more GPs into communities would allow them to counter the myths and misinformation about vaccinations. Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service also said it was concerned that children in the region were being exposed to serious illness because of parents’ beliefs. “Some regions in Queensland show a greater resistance to immunisation, and it appears it is more to do with parents’ social ideology than access to doctors or the

Investor gold here

In brief Low flying charges A MAN has been charged with several driving offences after allegedly travelling at 50km/h above the speed limit. Police detected the 28-year-old from Toowoomba travelling at 150km/h in a 100km/h zone on the New England Highway near Clifton at 3pm on Wednesday. Warwick senior officer in charge Shane Reid said the man was issued with a traffic infringement notice for $1062, lost eight demerit points and would face court over the alleged offences. “That is a ridiculous speed to be travelling and it’s not often we see people breaking the limit by 50km/h in the region,“ Sgt Reid said.

By SONJA KOREMANS RENTS in Australian capital cities are rising at their lowest pace on record, while the Southern Downs is quietly eclipsing them as investors’ new golden child. As the hype around Sydney’s whopping property prices continues, investors are focusing on new frontiers to sink their funds into and new data shows Warwick and Stanthorpe are in their sights. Capital city rents rose an average of just 1.5 per cent over the year, according to CoreLogic RP Data’s May rental index. But in stark contrast, rental returns grew almost six per cent in Warwick during the year and 5.5 per cent in Stanthorpe during the same period, according to CoreLogic - Australia’s largest property analyst. Southern Downs Realty’s Brent Bowles said out-of-town investors were swooping on cheap houses to rent out, while retirees and families from Brisbane and the Gold Coast were also key home buyers. “Unlike capital cities, Warwick and Stanthorpe are among areas generally overlooked by media and analysts - and that means the best opportunities to buy affordably while getting solid rental yields,” Mr Bowles said. “Homes within six blocks of the CBDs are showing the greatest demand - people want to be able to walk or be close to facilities, particularly with a growing retiree population. He said a low rental vacancy rate of 1.7 per cent for Warwick, combined with cheap house prices presented investors with brilliant opportunities.

Day labour rules

Member for Southern Downs Lawrence Springborg says he regularly meets people in the region who have recently moved from the city. “A house at $180,000 will generally bring in about $220 a week or more,” Mr Bowles said. “You can come to Warwick or Stanthorpe and buy three places for the price of one in Brisbane and get a better return.” CoreLogic data also showed national average rental yield for property investors fell to just 3.7 per cent in the quarter, dragged down in particular by Melbourne (3.3 per cent) and Sydney (3.6 per cent). Anthony and Adele Blissett recently moved from the Gold Coast to Warwick with affordability and

investor opportunities in mind. Ms Blissett said the couple had looked for some time before deciding to settle in the region. “We chose Warwick because it has all the facilities of a city but feels like a country town, plus property data indicated it was a growth area for sales and rent,” Ms Blissett said. State Opposition Leader and Local Member Lawrence Springborg said the Southern Downs was ripe for investors and home hunters. “There are the obvious affordability and lifestyle factors and also

THE Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is reminding Southern Downs bargain hunters to pay attention to their consumer rights as retailers discount prices to tempt shoppers in midyear clearance sales. A number of complaints received by the OFT concern purchases made during sales which could have been avoided if consumers were aware of their rights. Fair Trading Executive Director Brian Bauer said it was important consumers remembered that their consumer rights did not stop when these sales started.

By SONJA KOREMANS A DIESEL tanker jack-knifed at Cunningham’s Gap this week, holding up traffic for kilometres. A Southern Free Times reader took this shot, saying drivers stopped as far as 20 kilometres away in Aratula, to avoid any danger from leaking fuel. “Council workers put sand down on the road for the truck to able to right itself but that just made it worse,” the reader said. “Drivers chose to stop in outlying towns rather than risk any danger to themselves with the fuel situation,” he said. Warwick Police said they were unaware of the incident.

the future outlook of improving education, business and health facilities and the NBN network coverage,” Mr Springborg said. “Technology advancements are bringing great benefits for people who are looking to semi-retire and start up a new business from home on the Southern Downs without having to go back and forth to major cities. “Just recently I met a man running an international IT business very successfully from his home in Inglewood - those are the sort of opportunities that will be attractive to investors and families.”

QUEENSLAND councils will now be able to use their own workers rather than contractors to rebuild communities following natural disasters. The Federal Government has agreed to allow reimbursement for the use of council day labour under Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements. The move follows a campaign by the Local Government Association of Queensland to convince successive federal governments that day labour saved taxpayers money. State Government figures show the use of council day labour rather than contract labour to clean up after floods and cyclones in 2011 and 2012 saved taxpayers $160 million.

Casey’s tips

Council is lost

Great to be the king

THE council has losts its way. The ratepayers have been told that our rates will rise by five per cent. We are also told that the rates will not even cover the staff wages. Then can one of our councillors tell the ratepayers how the council will pay the payments and interest on the $35 million they are in debt? Now because of their mismanagement they want to lease sports fields back to the ratepayers who have already paid the council to maintain our sporting facilities. This is a disgrace that nine (9) elected councillors have allowed this to happen. The reason this council is so far in debt is bad financial management. The blame rests entirely with the council. When amalgamation was forced onto the ratepayers of Stanthorpe we were told we would be better off. Stanthorpe Council was forced to hand over $13 million our shire had in credit, along with new machinery. We were told our workforce would be safe. Now a couple of years down the track and we have a $35 million debt. All our excellent financial staff were replaced with so-called better staff. This has now been proven wrong by the debt we have. The only way to reduce this debt would be to cut staff by half and start at the top by reducing the councillor numbers from nine (9) to five (5). I have been told that this council has nine (9) engineers who would be paid large wages, along with a car. If this is true the numbers should be reduced to three (3). Stanthorpe only had two. Before the council goes about trying to lease off sports fields it should have a good look at the cuts that have been put forward in my letter. We also have councillors who on top of their wages have travel expenses of $18,000 - this could be reduced if we had fewer councillors. The one thing that went wrong with amalgamation is Warwick Shire should have been run from Stanthorpe, where better management practices were in place. We had the best CEO in Queensland. I recommend no sporting body take up the council’s offer to lease any fields - we have already paid the council and it is their responsibility to maintain these sports fields. Darryl Coleman, Stanthorpe.

THERE are many reasons we fall apart as individuals, families and businesses; we lose our way; sometimes it’s the fault of others but mostly self is to blame. Solomon was king over Israel some millennia back, a huge responsibility and he needed more than human wisdom to help him carry out the task. He was an ordinary human being and though he didn’t end well, at his best he sought God. In every situation we must take stock, maybe re-evaluate and make some changes. Businesses fold with a debt this size in many cases; go into liquidation. Will the council put this on the ratepayer again? Do we need a CEO on our council and when did the mayor’s role become full-time? What are their daily tasks? Is every decision the council makes a wise one? The king left us with hope. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” Prov. ch3 vss 5-6. If we think we can live life alone we fool ourselves and history proves that we need a Saviour. I am praying for you Mr Blundell. Julie McFetridge, Maryvale.

Stunning security

READING in another place that our national coordinator to counter terrorism in Australia Mr Greg Moriarty, has issued the warning that he has been “stunned” by the classified intelligence briefings that are facing our nation! It could be with us for decades or even a generation. This growing security risk was something everyone should be deeply concerned about. Let us all remind the co-ordinator that this has been chillingly obvious for years as the racism propaganda has stifled Australian voices for many, many years. Politicians rabbit on about how strong to be about national citizenship, lest some be offended! Days are wasted chasing who leaked what, while the millions of interlopers grow even more brazen in their self-assurance. Turning on television is to be educated about this entirely new phenomenon! This beautiful country is apparently the envy of the world, but

Dinner

the prize will be worthless when it is blown apart by those who live among us, but plot against us. Politicians, if the casualties of terrorism come to our door they will also be at yours! It is past time to dilly-dally, with no time left at all to tolerate and procrastinate what the inevitable result will be. Open the doors and send them all packing, for you know who they are! Melba Morris, Allora.

Men of the cloth A SWAG of religious leaders have put pen to paper and written PM Tony that it’s their belief the Marriage Act should not be changed to accommodate homosexual marriage. What a surprise it is to hear that these “learned” men of the cloth are protesting homosexual marriage. It comes hot on the heels of Nationals MP Darren Chester stating that many in his electorate support homosexuals having the right to marry. How would Darren know? Did he ring around to many in his electorate? Assuming there are several thousand voters that must have taken a lot of time. Conversely, perhaps some rang him. Was his phone rung off the hook? Now Darren, really, are we expected to believe that a good majority of your electorate supports homosexual marriage? It sounds very doubtful to me. If Darren wants to find out how much support there is for homosexual marriage, he should be calling for a national referendum on the proposal and that would settle the matter once and for all. But it does appear that those advocating homosexual marriage don’t want the people to have a say in this important matter. Do they think a referendum wouldn’t give them the answer they seek? Can we trust the politicians to get anything right? Jay Nauss, Glen Aplin.

Consequences THE consequences are now upon us all! Let us move forward in an immediate direction to prevent a whole range of problems, let us use our minds to think up solutions. We are already facing consequences of many badly thought up ideas such as: the insulation program - insulation options were not revised as cellulose fibre was included - Google this and it means rat fodder. Power support WELL, what fantastic news it is to see the wind farm near Glen Innes going ahead will surely produce enough energy to power something like 47,000 homes from 25 turbines. Surely there is an opportunity here on the Granite Belt for something similar? I also see the lithium ion batteries are at a stage now that homes could pretty much support themselves in regards to their energy needs by way of solar, though do note that power companies are now scrambling to get on board. If people leave them in big numbers, who is going to pay for the poles and wires I suppose? But it certainly seems that the concept of burning coal to make hot water to make steam to turn a turbine is not the only way to meet our energy needs, although the Greens have been telling us that for many years, way back when Australia was the leader in solar power. Now we look for German technology in that regard. Chris Leamy, Wallangarra.

Cute little red noses By SONJA KOREMANS MY ... what cute little red noses you have. These Warwick littlies were among the first in the state to don face paint and put the fun into fundraising ahead of Red Nose Day next week. Two dozen children at Warwick Early Learning Centre debuted their red noses yesterday in a practice run for the national charity event on Friday. The youngsters will be popping on red clothes and plastic noses to play their part to help save the lives of babies, with gold coin donations for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome prevention. They’re also looking foward to supping on red cup cakes and playing with more red face paint paint on Friday. It will be the second year the centre’s children have helped raised money for SIDS, and this year their target is $100. Yesterday, teacher Laura Glothier painted all 30 button noses sadly too many to fit in our photo - and we commend her handiwork and the kids’ patience. Not a slick of red paint was to been seen on little hands or playroom walls. Warwick Early Learning Centre director Madelaine Ryan said she hoped the fund-raiser would help younger children take SIDS awareness into a new generation. “It also helps to raise awareness for parents as some may not understand the risk of SIDS," Ms Ryan said. National health charity SIDS and Kids is urging other Queenslanders to support Red Nose Day. The call for action comes as Queensland is revealed as having one of the high-

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show the Sunshine State accounted for over a third (35 per cent) of all SIDS cases across Australia in 2013. Despite an 80 per cent decrease

in the rate of SIDS deaths over the past 24 years, SIDS and Kids Australia CEO Associate Professor Leanne Raven said that figures were still unacceptably high, especially in Queensland and New South Wales. “Despite huge improvements over the last quarter of a century, there are still far too many devastat-

ing cases taking place each year, and we still have a long way to go,” Ms Raven said. Red Nose Day helps raise money for vital research into SIDS and Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy. Visit www.rednoseday.com.au for more information on Red Nose Day participation.

THIEVES strike homes less in Warwick during winter but one of your valuables is at risk all-year around, according to local police. Warwick Sergeant Shane Reid said the majority of thefts in Warwick are car breakins with up to five a week when offenders target the town. Vehicle break-and-enters occur in spates, leading police to believe offenders operate in groups, Sgt Reid said. “We find that property theft and unlawful entry of motor vehicles does decline in winter, but we do have small groups all-year around who if the opportunity present itself to grab something out of vehicles, they will,“ Sgt Reid said. “They will go past 20 cars and maybe they will see three or four unlocked.“ Sgt Reid said many vehicle owner in the region were too trusting. “They think that because they are in the country, they don’t need to lock their car, these are the opportunities that thieves look for.“ The loss of money or merchandise are not always the mostly costly part of a car breakin. While only a small percentage of vehicle break-ins result in the car being stolen in Warwick, vandalism and extensive engine damage usually occur when it does.

A LOCAL school has paid tribute to its much-loved science teacher who passed away recently. Roy Fox dedicated much of his life to The School of Total Education in Warwick as head of its science department and each year, at graduations, students gave extraordinary thanks to his commitment and endless efforts in teaching them. Roy attended the University of Melbourne, achieving an honours degree in science. He loved the field of study immensely and its questions around time, creation and the universe.

Roy kept abreast of the latest developments in theoretical physics and helped scores of people on weekends and after school. His patience in explaining ideas and helping students was immense. For a time, he tutored students as an alternative form of income. Roy’s generosity and willingness to engage with those in need was inexhaustible. During a year off from teaching, Roy began a counselling course with Lifeline in Toowoomba before returning to teaching again. To support the indigenous community in Warwick, Roy helped in many ways with a

group of singers who formed a choir in recent years. More recently, Roy divided his time between Stawell in Victoria and Warwick to look after his ageing mother. No matter what state he was in, Roy would rise to perform service to others. He no doubt suffered greatly during his final months in Victoria, but spent his time to care for his mother without hesitation. A reward has come however as we recognise and value his extraordinary life, his simplicity, love and service. Roy passed away in Stawell. He was 66.

SMALL businesses will now officially have access to a $20,000 tax write-off to purchase items relating to their businesses after legislation passed the Senate on Monday. A 1.5 per cent tax cut was also passed and the bill was given top priority in the Senate with its debate lasting less than an hour. The former write-off threshold was just $1000. Any small business or sole trader with an Australian Business Number is eligible for the tax deduction as long as their business has an annual turnover of less than $2 million. The tax cut is valid from budget night through to 30 June, 2017. The Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce has welcomed the small business incentive as well as a tax depreciation measure for farmers that also passed through the Senate on Monday . The accelerated depreciation is for all primary producers regardless of turnover which will see immediate write-off for new fencing and water infrastructure, and writeoff over three years for fodder storage - started from 12 May 2015 and is ongoing with no expiry date. “As a result of these measures, our farmers will now have more confidence to make the necessary investments in their farm businesses. “It means more incentive to either build the water infrastructure they need, or to better manage their land through new fencing or to have the ability to store more fodder in case of drought,” Mr Joyce said. “Accelerated depreciation measures will also encourage farmers to invest in drought preparedness when they are in a financial position to do so.” The incentive for primary producers is in addition and separate to the instant write-off for purchases for small businesses which operates for the current and the next financial years only.

WINE, dine and listen to cool jazz - that’s the invitation from Warwick Tourism Events which has added a winter dinner to the Jumpers and Jazz event this year. The inaugural winter dinner experience will provide guests with the opportunity to taste and experience the Southern Downs with a regional feast in Warwick’s historic town hall. Andrew Simpson, or Chef Drew as he is more commonly known, currently head chef with the Queensland College of Wine Tourism, will oversee the catering with students of TAFE Qld Southwest coming on board to provide the service. Rob Hamilton, Warwick Tourism and Events co-ordinator said this dinner would be a celebration of the very best of the Southern Downs region, seasonal foods complemented with some of the finest Granite Belt wines and beers. “We see this as an opportunity for festival visitors and locals to connect with regional produce, within our successful textile and yarnbombing festival framework,” he said. “With the dinner, we marry a warm winter country experience with burgeoning demand for regional food.” Chef Drew has created a menu of canapes featuring Glen Aplin mushrooms and Mallow Organic Lamb, antipasto platters featuring Stanthorpe cheeses, locally cured and smoked meats, and Coolmunda olives. Mains will include slow roasted rib fillet or pulled pork and for dessert, the famous Sutton’s Apple Pie and panacotta. Dinner guests will be entertained on the evening by stunning jazz vocalist Emma Pask in the company of the John Morrison Trio, as part of the 2015 Flying Tour presented by Queensland Music Festival. Taking with them an inimitable blend of Latin, jazz and soul, the quartet will visit a

cavalcade of small towns for an energetic series of concerts and school workshops. These city slickers couldn’t be more jazzed about the opportunity to visit places they’ve never seen and kick off in Boonah before flying off for their appearance at the Jumpers and Jazz Festival. Then it’s off to dazzle Blackall, Barcaldine, Birdsville and Jundah before wrapping up the tour in Mount Isa at the Mount Isa Celebrates concert. Described by James Morrison as “the greatest gift to jazz vocals in the last decade”, Pask’s voice, talent and style are

as unmistakable as her refreshing and unpretentious approach - both to music and to life. John Morrison, one of Australia’s best big band drummers and most gifted educators, is known for his driving, swing feel and his passion for nurturing young musicians. The Winter Dinner is at Warwick Town Hall, Palmerin Street, Warwick, on Friday 17 July from 6pm to 11pm. Tickets for the dinner and/ or performance only are available from Warwick Visitor Information Centre or www.warwicktickets.com.au.

Upsets - order of day By CASEY O’CONNOR ROUND 14 threw the cat among the pigeons for this tipster and plenty of others. Upsets were the order of the round and the fallout from Origin II is set to impact on Round 15. The Tigers upset many tipsters as they mauled the reigning premiers on Friday night. Without their Origin duo of Aaron Woods and Robbie Farah, the Tigers were expected to struggle. But it was the Bunnies who were under the pump as the Tigers controlled the game. Martin Taupau was sensational for the Tigers. He scored two powerful tries and led the side with power and aggression through the middle. While the win was a boost to the side and their supporters, there was more unsettling news early this week from the Tigers den as the board announced the resignation of CEO Grant Mayer. Jason Taylor seems to have found the key to this talented young side. Hopefully, the recent boardroom antics are not a distraction as they prepare to take on Manly at Brookvale. Manly are still basking in the afterglow of the DCE signing. While they may have their man, there is still unrest in the nest. Rumours persist about the future of embattled coach Geoff Toovey and must be taking a toll on players and coach. I can see back-to -back wins here for the Tigers. On Saturday, the all conquering Cowboys face a big test when they take on Canberra in the capital. The Raiders have been building momentum and have climbed to ninth on the ladder with expectations of a top-eight finish. Blake Austin is proving one of the signings of the season. His form at five-eighth has been outstanding. The Cowboys notched up a perfect 10 when they played an amazing get-out-of-jail card to beat Parramatta. While the outside emphasis has been on the Origin stars, coach Paul Green who has re-signed for three years has been working to improve his side's right edge defence. Much will depend on post Origin fitness, but this is the perfect opportunity for Ricky’s boys to grab another win here. Who needs DCE - that was message after the Titans win over the Bulldogs. The Gold Coast is undoubtedly the most resilient and perhaps the toughest side in the NRL. After a season where anything and everything has gone awry, they let their football do the talk-

ing, and it spoke volumes about the players and their attitude. Both sides were down on troops sans Origin, but in the end the Titans out bulldogged the Bulldogs in a get down and dirty grind. This week they host the unpredictable Warriors who blew their chances against the Roosters at Mt Smart Stadium. Warriors Manu Vatuvei created a milestone becoming the first player to score 10 or more tries in 10 consecutive seasons, but it was not enough to give the Warriors a win. The Warriors controlled the game, leading 14-0 at one point. How often have we seen it - NZ were their own worst enemy. They let in soft tries and invited the Roosters to the party. It spelt the end of their brief spell in the top eight. The Titans welcome back their Origin players and should continue their scramble to remain in the top eight. The vanquished Bulldogs will be looking for redemption when they travel to Panthers territory on Saturday. Des Hasler has been doing some howling about Origin, but is he merely deflecting criticism away from the Doggies? Hasler will have his Origin stars back in the kennel this week, however they were not beaten by the Titans because of the absent contingent. The Dogs fielded a huge side but discovered speed and stealth sometimes out gun sheer strength. The Panthers hold a narrow lead in the headto-head clashes between the two teams however the Dogs have current bragging rights. Penrith is suffering from the scourge of injury. It is uncertain whether five eighth Jamie Soward has recovered sufficiently from the shoulder injury suffered against the Eels to play in this game. Penrith are tenacious but I think the Dogs have plenty to prove to themselves and will get a win here. On Sunday, the Knights host the Sharks at Hunter Stadium. Both sides are looking for consistency in the back half of the season. The Knights released centre Joey Leilua this week. Whether this has a positive effect on the playing group is to be seen. In hindsight, Cronulla’s win over the Roosters should come as no surprise. They are an experienced hard-nosed team who can graft and grind wins. They have the champion’s niggler Michael Ennis in their ranks and could get under the skin

of their opposition. It was a well executed win and if they bring their A Game to Hunter Stadium should leave with the points. Origin II is sure to have a say in the result of the Melbourne Storm Brisbane game. Melbourne fielded their youngest ever side and did not disgrace against the Eels earning praise from their coach who is a task master. Things step up a notch for them here. The Broncos are experienced at dealing with Origin fallout. Ben Hunt has been leading the Broncos around the paddock in fine form, and they look to have the depth in their ranks to counter any issues that arise post Origin. To win here, the Broncos must overcome their Melbourne misery having not beaten the home side since Round 9 of 2010. Despite that stat, I think Brisbane will notch up another win here but it will be tough. There will be pride not just points on the line when the Roosters and Dragons go head to head on Monday night in the final game of round 15. The two sides last met in the traditional Anzac Day clash and the Dragons came away victorious. At their last outing, the Dragons went down to the Cronulla but there was much to like about their performance. Benji Marshall and Gareth Widdop worked brilliantly together and are becoming a lethal combination. Against the Sharks, the Dragons goal line defence was at times brittle and they cannot offer the Roosters any opportunities this week. It should have been game over at halftime in the Roosters Warriors clash, however the tri colours managed to get back into the game. They were forced to come from 14-nil down, and despite fewer attacking opportunities they snatched a win. Origin representatives from both sides have a good recovery period, and there will be no Origin excuses here. The Dragons hold a slight advantage in the head-to-head clashes, and I think they might breathe fire into this game and come away with another two points to cement their spot in the top four.

THERE are vastly differing reports coming from the BRL game at Wallangarra last weekend between the Stanthorpe Gremlins and the Rams. The TRL referee called the game off 19 minutes before full time, with the score at 2614 after a crusher tackle on Gremlins player Brad Crisp. Rams player Marc McGrady was placed on report following the incident. However, it was the ensuing events that forced the game to be abandoned. Rams players allegedly incited the already angry Stanthorpe supporters, and some very ugly scenes ensued. While players and coaches may claim there was no malice on the field, this is not the picture country football should portray no matter how passionate you are about your preferred team. The BRL has worked hard over the past several years to ensure the NRL Code of Conduct for players, spectators and officials is adhered to. It was disappointing therefore to hear from a neutral spectator what transpired last Saturday. This person was attending their very first BRL game and unfortunately chose this game as his first foray to local league. He will not be back. People may well say that is only one family, but that family has family and they have friends and the best and worst publicity is spread by word of mouth. While it may have seemed appropriate behaviour from all those involved, this person was thoroughly disgusted by the behaviour and language of the players on the field and similarly the spectators. Where were the ground managers or security he asked? The NRL and QRL Code of Conduct clearly states that any person can be removed from a game and barred from attending future games if their behaviour warrants such action. As I was not at the game, I cannot comment on what action should be taken, and am aware the matter is being reviewed by the BRL. In my experience, referees do not call games off for s###s and giggles. It is action that is not taken lightly. One of the concerns of course is that behaviour like this does nothing to encourage TRL referees to make the trip to BRL games to officiate. I urge all players, officials and spectators to take a long hard look at last weekend’s incidents. The BRL is an amateur competition with football played at a higher standard than some outsiders are willing to admit. Let’s not see it ruined by the actions of a few. - Casey SMITH NO.1 IT IS official - the ICC this week confirmed what Australian cricket lovers already knew, Steve Smith is the best batsman in test cricket. Smith’s somewhat heartbreaking score of 199 in the first test in the West Indies cemented his spot at the top of the world batting rankings. To say the Australian vice-captain has had a stellar season is an understatement. Over the past 18 months, Smith has plundered runs at a rate al-

Australian batsman extraordinaire Steve Smith has capped off a great season by being named NO 1 test batsman by the ICC.

It is a well-earned reward for a tenacious cricketer who had his lifelong dream of a baggy green debut in 2010 shattered when he was dropped several times from the Australian side. His rise from debutant to No 1 has been remarkable and is testament to his personal investment in his craft. Initially, Smith was brought into the Australian team as a leg spinner - “the next Shane Warne” some said. After he scored an entertaining knock of 77 at Headingley, it was apparent that while he is more than a handy leggie, his future lay as a batsman. Three years after his debut, Smith was back in the Aussie squad as they returned to England chasing the Ashes. Smith himself was chasing a permanent spot in the side. Things finally clicked for Smith in the fifth and final Test and the image of him going from 94 to 100 with an a commanding six down the ground summed up his transition from fringe player to a permanent member of Australia’s XI. It is that style of play that thrilled cricket lovers throughout last summer and beyond as Smith carved up the best bowling attacks in all forms of the game. But it is in test cricket that Smith looks most at home. He stepped up to the plate, and took on the Australian captaincy without a mere ripple in his form. When Clarke returned from injury, he stepped back seamlessly into his role as batsman and captain in waiting. If his outstanding form continues, history may well regard Steve Smith as one of our greatestever bastmen but for the moment he tops the ICC rankings, above such luminaries as Kumar Sangakkara, AB de Villiers and Australian captain Michael Clarke. COOL SUITS KAY PRESIDENT of the Stanthorpe Golf Club Stephen Kay found the cool conditions to his liking last Saturday. His recently acquired set of clubs that ping when they are hit are certainly working for the president. He easily won the club’s June monthly medal event, with a score of nett 67. Next best was Mark McCosker with a nett score of 69. Run down for the men went to scores of nett 73 and better. Dylan Barraclough now has a zero handicap and finished with the best gross of 73. He also won the pro-pin at 9/18, and had best putting of 25 for the round. Other pro-pins went to Mark McCosker at 1/10 and Len Leigh at 5/14. R. Rigg collected the pin at 3/12 and Keith Green had closest at 17. Margie Locke had a good weekend returning a nett 75 on Saturday to win the ladies medal from Madeline Jarman in second place (nett 78 after a countback). Kay Webb had best approach at the ladies 17th pin with Hannah Reeves collecting everything else for the ladies, best gross of 82, least putts of 29, pin at 3/12 and the run down with nett 78. Ian Harvey who sponsored the round ensured players started the day with the right spirit. The captain’s match play is underway. The draw on the notice board. Players should check for opponents in the first round and make sure the match is played by the due date. This Saturday, the club has scheduled a single Stableford event played for the Finch Cup spon-

Tee off is from 11am and the timesheet is on the board at the clubhouse. RRR FORMAT POPULAR 29 PLAYERS hustled and bustled for positions and points in last week’s Red Rooster rumble in Warwick. At the end of the week, the winner was declared - Brett Donovan with 22 points. Runner -up (also with 22 points) was Jesse Harris. The ball rundown went to Noah Little-Shires 22, Brad Rose 21, Gerry Morrisey 20 and, Doug Wilson 20, Leon Stickland, Phil Economidis Jamie Saunders and Ross Kingston all with 19. Chooks went to Brad Rose (11) and Jesse Harris (13 and 16). The new format for RRR is proving popular and a reminder to anyone interested in playing, you are able to play any day of the week. Down Inglewood way, the “Bad Bunch“ rode into the Inglewood SSAA Range last Sunday and shot the place up with the following arrests: First arrested was Rochelle Bynon followed by second Tom Donald and then Doug Redmond. A new rider with the bunch was Lynda Johnston who is learning the ropes. Down at the other end of the complex, a Rimfire event was far more civilised. It was won by Ray Dudgeon who defeated second-placed Adam Cooper and in third spot Stephanie Dudgeon. This week folks, it is Muzzle loading and Centre fire competitions on the range. A reminder that the fourth weekend of the month, the club holds a variety of pistol events, Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Diary date - Saturday 25 July 2015. The SSAA (Inglewood Branch) Inc 2015 AGM at lunchtime. The club is planning to have a pig on the spit for lunch following the meeting. Remember to check out the Inglewood Sporting Shooters Facebook pageImg 5803 Shooters McLENNON A WINNER THE Horse and Jockey Hotel Motel sponsored the Single Stableford competition at the Warwick Golf Club last Saturday and a hot field of more than 40 players were out on the fairways. Some players are still finding the conditions tough out there, but Kris McLennon carded 38 points to win on a countback. Pipped at the post (also with 38 points) was the big improver Phil Economidis. Run downs went to scores of 35 or better. Shane McKenzie was on fire and dominated the nearest the pins, winning five, seven and nine. Viv Roser got a look in at 11 and Greg Wallace at 13, however no-one managed to hit the green on the 16th. This Saturday is the Gray Cup Qualifier with the top eight to go through. Sponsor is Jon Pearson’s King Street Mechanical. Golfers and Redbacks supporters are reminded that the Redbacks AFL Charity Golf Day (a four person Ambrose) is on 28 June. Organisers are expecting a big crowd and timesheets for all events are in the pro shop - or give them a call on 4661 3664. CLOUDS GIVE WAY TO BOWLS IT WAS a pleasant surprise when the clouds part-

ed Saturday, giving way to a great afternoon of bowls at the Summit Club. Playing triples, Phil Davis Kurt Empen and Aaron McInnerney were too good for Andrew McGlashan Attillio Zamprogno and Wayne Thomas. The final score 28-10. The pairs game was a close affair between Maurice Zamprogno and Eddie Zanatta and opponents Brian Brown and Keith Mungall. The double Z’s get the rub of the green to win 22-19. Well played, Maurice. The final end was played with the jack thrown by the skip, winning the coin toss but only after all bowls were played first. The Champion of Champion singles event was played on Sunday. In a tight game where there were some outstanding bowls played, Roberto Capelli was successful 25-21 against Mick Mills. The 2015 Club Challenge teams have been announced: (Singles) Darren Stanley; (Pairs) Tyler Sweeney, Michael Sweeney; (Triples) Brian Wilmot Rodney Newlands and Quinton Stanley; (Rinks) Ray Spiller, Kurt Empen, Eliseo Zamprogno and Rob Capelli; (Reserve) Paul Zamprogno. The Club Challenge will be held on 27 and 28 June. This weekend Summit bowlers Len Covill, Zel, Paul Zamprogno are heading to the big smoke to play in the Salisbury Fours Carnival. This Saturday social Bowls start to roll at 1pm. A date for your diary bowlers, the closing date for nominations for the Men’s Presidents Singles is on 10 July. ZONE THREE CHAMPIONSHIPS SUCCESS THE Allora Golf Club hosted the Zone Three Championships last Sunday, and 44 golfers from across the Darling Downs competed in the event. The weather was excellent and was matched by the standard of golf. The gross winners were Hayden Gomez (71) Rod Simpson (78) and Matt Pierce (88) in A, B & C grades respectively. It was good too see the club’s own “struggling B grader” Rod Simpson feature on the day. Nett winners and runners-up were: A Grade Lindsay May (net 62); Matty May (65); B Grade: Neil Chandler (67) Darren Hedges (67); C Grade: Jim Anderson (73) and Gene McMillan (74). Another great showing by the local boys. (A touch of local knowledge perhaps.) NTPs were won by Hayden Gomez (A Grade) Aaron Simpson (B Grade) and Matt Pierce (C Grade). Approach shots went to Tony Wise (A Grade); Ross Burgess (B Grade) and Gene McMillan (C Grade). The weekend got off to a great start on Friday, with a group of 15 playing the Duck run. Winner was Garth on 23 points from Lindsay on 21. Pin shot was won by Jack. In Allora this weekend, the members will be playing for the Jenco Monthly Medal on Saturday. A reminder to all golfers that the club is hosting a round of the Holden Scramble Four Player Ambrose. The highlight of the day will be the prize of a Holden car for a hole in on the 16th. Will you be driving away in a brand new car?

Local Sport COWBOYS FALL TO HAWKS THE Warwick Cowboys Reserve Grade failed in their bid to win a third President’s Cup as unforced errors cost them the game against the Gatton Hawks. With the score at 24-nil at half time, many thought it was game over, but in the second half the Cowboys fought back to hold the Hawks scoreless in the second half and get within a converted try of their opponents. The Cowboys Reserve Grade now head into the second round of the TRL comepittion at the top of leader-board. This weekend all Cowboys sides are in action at Gelnholme Park where they take on Brothers in the first game of Round Two of the TRL. SPORTERS OUT IN FORCE AFTER a one-week break, Sporters were out in force in Stanthorpe on Sunday. Marg Locke capped off a successful weekend on the course, adding a win at Sporters to her success in the Ladies competition on Saturday. Runner-up was Tony Steele. The run-downs went to Paul Byrnes and Phil Zikan. Aaron Simmers had the Best Gross and John Walsh claimed the pin shot at the 12th. Mick Doorley did best at 17, but the Pro Pin went a begging. In the meat tray stakes, Angelo Maugeri and Terry Byrnes both tasted success. Sporters are back into it again on Sunday and tee-off this week is between 8am and 8.30am. NEWMAN BACK AND IN FORM JOY Newman is fresh from a holiday, and she was quickly back into good form at association croquet last week, pegging out to score the maximum (26 points) in her game against Andrea Denkewitz and Val Richardson (17 points). Player numbers were down a little. Grace Howard and Heather Widderick played Carol Verwey and Jenny Tunbridge. Grace showed a great return to form with a break of seven hoops in a row. Unfortunately, it was not enough as she and her partner lost the game 26 to 20. A full contingent of players hit the green for hoop runners for the first time in a while. Gwen McBean made a return after a long lay off. In the first game, Shirley Evans was on fire in the first game, top scoring with eight hoops. Teresa Pyne also scored a hoop in one. The second group played a very even 10-all draw. In the second game, Teresa Pyne scored her second “hoop in one”. A hoop in one also helped Bill Golding to his top score of the day - nine hoops. A small group braved the very bleak conditions on Saturday afternoon. Three games were played in nasty conditions. All players scored evenly with Shirley Evans adding another “hoop in one” to her tally. New players are always welcome on both

The gateball crew also had cool conditions for their games on Friday morning. Nine players braved the weather and had an enjoyable but chilly morning. The results this week were two games to white and one to red. If you are interested in giving gateball a go, contact Margaret on 4681 0475. All current players are gaining more experience and improving each week. The director of Gateball Queensland will be visiting Stanthorpe shortly to provide tuition to players. KILLARNEY CUP NOT TO BE MISSED THE Warwick Turf Club is gearing up for the Killarney Cup meeting to be held on 27 June. The popular event is proudly supported by the Killarney businesses including the Killarney Hotel Motel, the Killarney Co-op; Wickham’s Farms; Shirl and Sandy’s; Veronica’s on Willow and Smith’s Farms - the Falls Killarney. A big five race card is planned, and gates open at 11am. There will be prizes for Fashions on the Field and a bus will run from Killarney. For details or bus bookings, contact Shirl and Sandy’s or the Killarney Hotel. To get the Killarney folk in the mood, a Calcutta will be held on Friday 26 June at the Killarney Hotel. MADSEN RASMUSSEN WIN FOR WATTLES THE reigning TRL Premiers Wattles picked up more silverware lat weekend with a convincing win in last weekend’s Madsen Rasmussen Trophy at Clive Berghofer Stadium. The Warriors domi-

nated the 2015 TRL competition leaders the Gatton Hawks in a 32-14 win. Wattles went into the game with several familiar faces missing from their line-up, but their convincing win announced that they are gunning for back-to-back TRL premierships and are bang on target half way through the season. Wattles held an 18-10 lead at half time, and in a tough second half they scored three tries in 10 minutes to put the game beyond the reach of the Hawks. Wattles Corey Blades was named Player of Match and received the Steve Pollard Family Medal. As Wattles prepare for Round Two of the TRL, they have a bye this weekend. REDS SEARCH FOR PATH TO REDEMPTION IT IS almost four years since that heady night when the Queensland Reds held the Super Trophy aloft at Suncorp Stadium and it has been pretty much downhill all the way since then. The lacklustre performance by the Reds in their final game of the 2015 season was another blow to fans as they watched their team crushed by the Waratahs 31-5. It’s been a frustrating season for fans and for some just too hard to watch. The Reds managed just three wins this season, and surely that must lead to some major changes at Ballymore. The result of a review of the whole operation is due shortly - the outcome will be, to say the least, interesting. The coach’s tenure must come under the microscope although it is rumoured his position has been guaranteed by back office boys. Seventeen debutants were blooded for

Queensland this season with just Genia and Slipper playing every match. Stalwarts James Horwill, Will Genia and James Hanson have all played their last game for the Reds. Quade Cooper’s future has not been determined and Ben Tapuai’s future apparently lies in another state. One familiar face that has re-signed is Allora export Greg Holmes who has extended his contract for another year. He will head into the 2016 season as the most capped Reds player 129 appearances and sits fourth on the all- time Queensland players record. Where to from here for the Reds? The review has already brought some new faces to the table, but the path to redemption for the playing group and their exasperated fans may lie in the person who takes the coaching reins going forward. All eyes will be on the results of the review and movements and announcements from Ballymore. The Reds showed in 2009 under the right conditions it doesn’t take a lot to turn things around. Will history repeat itself? DRESSED FOR THE OCCASION JUNE long weekend - Race meeting at Injune David Kemp of B & K motors thought - Why not? Sounds like a great weekend. What’s better than a day at the Injune Races? A day at the Injune Races with most of your staff for a staff bonding day and just to add some spice, the boys should dress for the occasion - or something. We are loving the shades, but not sure if the boys would get a start in the Myer Fashions on the Field at Flemington but our sources tell us they all had a great day.

Scotney d Prickles 26-11; N. Fletcher d C. Davidson 25-10; Slave d K. Mooney 25-6; R. Vidler d W. Foster 25-23; D. Walker won on a forfeit from R. Lawson. Sunday PM - D. Walker d R. Vidler 25-9.
