■ Residents still not happy as new broiler plan hatched...

Pecking order By JOLENE OGLE A PROPOSED broiler farm is back before the council after the applicant was asked to reply to a number of concerns raised by councillors last year. The council deferred the matter of the Ridgewood broiler farm in September last year to allow the applicant to address a number of matters including measures to mitigate dust nuisance for residents living along Top Forestry Road, as well as minimise road maintenance requirements such as sealing the road. The applicant was also asked to investigate whether and alternate haul route was possible, whether chicken pick-up times could be limited to 6am to 7pm and to identify how unacceptable odour impacts on future residents could be addressed. The applicant was also asked to provide an infrastructure agreement that included all proposed road works or maintenance measures to be undertaken on Top Forestry Road. Noosa Council confirmed the applicant lodged a response to the issues on 4 June. Outspoken community group No Broiler Farm Cooroy (NBFC) slammed the revised plan application as a “huge fail”. NBFC co-convenor Julia Walkden said in a letter to members that the latest version of the development application addressed just one of Noosa Council’s many concerns by

agreeing to seal Top Forestry Road. “While dust from this road may not be an issue, the eight shed broiler complex would still be a huge source of dust, noise and odour,” she said. “The applicant’s refusal to change the haul route means heavy vehicles would still be using inadequate roads, including narrow, winding CooroyBelli Creek Road and the town streets of Maple, Crystal and Myall. “Important traffic safety and amenity issues remain and the rest of the community will be just as affected.” Ms Walkden said there is a list of problems with the revised proposal including the dust and odour modelling for the proposal still relying on Nambour and Tewantin weather records, chicken pick-up times are still planned for early morning, and heavy vehicles will still travel through Cooroy causing delays and road safety problems. Noosa Council said residents are welcome to comment on the documents provided by the applicant. All comments will need to be submitted in writing to the council by 17 July. The matter will be reported to a future council meeting for a decision. Noosa Today attempted to contact the applicant for comment but no response was received by the time of going to press.

Noosa sends invite AS temperatures drop in Melbourne a touch of Noosa sunshine has arrived, thanks to Tourism Noosa’s winter marketing campaign You Could Be Here. The campaign is Tourism Noosa’s biggest winter campaign yet, showcasing beautiful Noosa to Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and New Zealand. Launched in Melbourne this week, the You Could Be Here campaign is designed to entice interstate visitors to Noosa for the winter season. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said the campaign was a colourful message showing that in the time it takes to rise on these wintry mornings in southern cities, get ready and travel to work, you could be relaxing in the warmth of Noosa. “The You Could Be Here campaign which this year extends into Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and New Zealand was officially launched in Melbourne on Monday,” he said. “A new initiative is a Noosa Pop-Up Beach House themed exhibition space at the highly visible Federation Square. “Located on the corner of Melbourne’s busiest intersection

of Swanston and Flinders streets, the Noosa Pop-Up Beach House will open early morning to early evening for a week to entice Melburnians to discover reasons why Noosa is such a great holiday choice at this time of year.” As part of the activities, a range of events will take place throughout each day, commencing on Monday morning with a live activation with Melbourne’s leading radio station, Nova FM. There will also be cooking demonstrations with Noosa chef Shane Bailey from Noosa Boathouse, body art painting with Julie Tattam of the Australian Body Art Festival and jazz musician Andrew Swann from the Noosa Jazz Festival. Visitors to the Noosa Pop-Up Beach House will also have the opportunity to win a Noosa holiday including flights, accommodation, and weekend passes to the Noosa Jazz Festival in September. In addition to Federation Square being full of Noosa inspiration, a stunning Noosa winter image will also be prominently displayed on the digital screen above Young and Jacksons Hotel and Tourism Noosa’s signature Noosa Melbourne tram will be rolling through the streets each

Noosa Councillor Frank Wilkie said Melbourne was an important market for Noosa. “Melbourne is our highest yielding market with a spend of $122 million to the year ending December 2014,” he said. “The You Could Be Here campaign is all about showcasing Noosa’s beautiful winter weather to those in cooler regions, and positions Noosa as the ideal holiday choice.”

The campaign has been launched to coincide with the largest trade event in the world, the Australian Tourism Exchange, the Melbourne Bridal Expo, and Tourism Noosa’s visit to the International Media Marketplace where appointments have been made with key Australians and international media. In other regions, Tourism Noosa has secured advertising on Sydney buses, billboards in the Canberra airport while parliament is sitting and a print advertising campaign in New Zealand, plus social media campaigns in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra.

Floating land sculptures in horizon NINE local artists have been commissioned by Noosa Council to produce sculptural installations along the foreshores of Tewantin and Boreen Point for this year’s Floating Land event. Seven of the artists have been directly involved in previous Floating Land events and will produce works in the Reflect category and two artists have been commissioned in the Re-imagine category. Together, the artists’ works will highlight the connections between art, the environment and people, linking these elements at the waterfront of Lake Cootharaba and the Noosa River at Tewantin. The sculptural works will be installed and on display for various periods during the seven-week period of Floating Land 2015, which will be held from 27 August to 18 October. Councillor Tony Wellington said the bi-annual festival has become a much-respected “green art” festival, since its inception in 2001. “With its emphasis on outdoor sculpture and installation works,

Right: Ross Annels has been chosen to work in the reflect category. Picture: SUPPLIED plus its celebration of the natural environment, the festival really is accessible to everyone,” he said. Cr Wellington said it was difficult for the committee to select artists from the wide range of proposals submitted. “We are blessed in Noosa and across the Sunshine Coast to have

so many exceptionally talented and creative individuals,” he said. “Certainly Floating Land is a magnificent showcase for that talent. There is something for everyone in this year’s event, from interactive soundscapes to striking sculptural forms. Some of the works on display will require

direct participation of the local community, particularly school children. “Personally, I am really looking forward to this 8th iteration of the Floating Land arts festival.” The 2015 festival program will include an exhibition of temporal artwork in the environment, a seven-week retrospective exhibition at the Noosa Regional Gallery showcasing images from Floating Land events and works created as part of the 2015 artist-in-residence program at local schools, plus the Re-imagine Forum at The J, as well we workshops, presentations and activities. The artists chosen for this year’s event include Kari and Ross Annels, Lyndon Davis, Leah Barclay, Rene Bahloo, Kris Martin, Elizabeth Poole and Simon McVerry who will work in the reflect category, plus Lisa Brummel and Julie Wall who were selected to work in the re-imagine category. Rental return plea By JOLENE OGLE

A TEWANTIN woman is pleading for the return of her daughter’s wallet after it was left on a supermarket bench last week. On 15 June, Karen Glaser went to pay rent at a bank in Tewantin, and as the bank wasn’t yet open, she popped to the shops to run some errands. Karen accidently left her purple crocodile skin-style wallet on the counter with over $1000 inside. It wasn’t until she had crossed the road and went into a newsagent that she realised she had lost her purse but by the time she had run back to the supermarket, the wallet was gone. “It’s just overwhelming,” Karen said. “I couldn’t believe it had happened.” Karen, who works two part-

time jobs to make ends meet, said she knew the money would be gone but was also upset she would now have to replace all the cards in her wallet including her licence, medicare card, Blue Card and so much more. Karen’s mum, Marilyn, wrote to Noosa Today upset the wallet wasn’t handed into the store when it was found. “So much for decency and honesty,” she said. “She was left with $3 in her bank!” Marilyn had this message for the person who had taken the distinctive purple wallet; “If the person who took her purse can’t find it in their heart to return her money and purse, would you at least return the rest of the items, bearing in mind that her address is on the back of the licence,” she said. Ironically, just a few months

The missing wallet is similar to the one shown, purple in colour, made from vinyl and with a faux crocodile skin style cover. ago Karen found a wallet across the road from the RSL. “There was cash in the wallet and a RSL card,” Marilyn said. “Karen took (the wallet) across to the RSL and the grateful owner claimed it. My daughter said to me, ‘I’d just like to think that

if ever I lost my purse that some honest person would do the same for me’. I guess that was not to be.” If anyone has any information about the missing wallet, phone Noosa Today on 5455 6964 from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Short wait for long weekend THE countdown is on to the 14th annual Noosa Long Weekend Festival, with the event now only one month away and tickets selling fast to the 75 live music, dance, theatre, supper clubs, cabaret, literature, food and visual art events being held between 14 and 26 July. Festival director Ian Mackellar said the response to this year’s line-up had been overwhelmingly positive, with a number of events having sold out weeks in advance. “An Evening with the Queensland Ballet led by artistic director Li Cunxin (author of autobiography Mao’s Last Dancer) has been so popular that we have scheduled another performance,” he said. “Dusty Live in Concert starring Monique Montez has sold out, as has a number of food related events and the premier seating for the Opera Australia production The Magic Flute.” Mr Mackellar said last year’s festival was undoubtedly a hard act to follow with more than 10,000 visitors to 35 venues and locations. “But we’ve worked hard to lift the bar even higher in 2015 and are thrilled to have Opera Australia perform a fully staged production of its

Event organisers said the winner of the Miss Showgirl competition will be wellpresented and mannered and will represent Noosa Shire with a great personality and a passion for the beautiful Noosa shire. “It is a traditional and honourable position that has seen many young ladies gain a wealth of knowledge, confidence and wonderful expe-

riences on their journeys,” they said. “The right girl may even get to travel the world as they progress through the levels via representing our sub-chamber at the Brisbane Ekka.” There are prizes up for grabs including cash with the winners announced at the show ball on Saturday 29 August at Pomona Memorial Hall. Beck with Johanna Allen in a double-bill program - Leading Ladies - and we have the quick-witted and fiery group Los Nachos Trios touring Australia for the first time,” he said. Mr Mackellar said the 2015 Noosa Long Weekend Festival features more than 75 events at various locations around Noosa including literature events, forums, live music, theatre performances, interactive art, films, cabaret and supper clubs. Jonah, Isaac and the teacher Carol Sharpe with Smart Pups Laddie and Harvey.

Smart pups keep kids on toes OVER the past four years, 12 Smart Pups in training have been part of daily school life at Sunshine Beach State School. The local school is dedicated to raising awareness about the valuable role these Assistance Dogs play in the day-to-day lives of children with special needs. Smart Pups help children and their recipient families achieve greater quality of life through the loving companionship of a skilled furry best friend for life, or in other words, a trained and fully qualified Smart Pups Assistance Dog. Currently there are two Smart Pups in foster care at the school - ‘Laddie’ who is being fostered with one of their teachers, Carol Sharpe, and ‘Harvey’ fostered by one of their families, Penny and Jonah. The Smart Pup program is a winwin situation having a puppy in training in the school environment. Not only is the puppy exposed to many situations that they would not come across outside of the school environment, the students learn about

taking care of and sometimes assist in the training of the puppy learning the proper instructions and language. “Many of my friends in different classes are so jealous of me being in the class with the Smart Pup, I love coming to school each day because I know the dog will be there waiting for me,” student Isaac said enthusiastically. Over the years, it has been observed by teachers and parents that having a dog in training in the classroom helps develop student responsibility and keeps the class very calm and focused. Smart Pups has been operating for four years, and in that time has placed a total of 34 dogs with families across Australia. Placed at 12-18 months of age, Smart Pup Assistance Dogs are granted public access and become an integral part of the recipient family’s life accompanying them on shopping trips, family outings and even holidays. Smart Pups receive no official funding from the Government and relies on donations, grants and fun-raising activities to continue the program.

THE Tewantin State School student choir were the main attraction at the recent Citizenship Ceremony at The J, Noosa Heads, that welcomed over 60 new citizens, singing Give me a Home Among the Gumtrees. The audience joined in the performance, dancing and singing along to the well-rehearsed concert. “Noosa politicians and locals welcomed families such as the Mander family who travelled 16,000 kilometres from “swampy, chilly old England” to live near the “warm and sunny beaches of Noosa”. The Mander family began their journey from England when registered nurse and mum, Louise Mander, became ill with pneumonia and spent her days recovering watching travel shows to Australia. Louise fell in love. After talking to her husband, Matthew, and three children, Jacob, Hope and Ben, the family decided to make the move to Noosa in 2010. The family scoured the Sunshine Coast looking for their next family home and knew where they wanted to settle when they went to the “beautiful country town” of Cooroy. The family has settled into their new life with Jacob and Hope attending the University of the Sunshine Coast, while Jacob also coaches the Under 13 soccer team for Cooroy and competes in the Cooroy men’s team. Ben attends Noosa District High School in Year 11 and has just qualified to run in the Queensland State Finals for Cross Country representing both the Sunshine Coast and

Watch the power of togetherness IN THE lead-up to the 2000 Sydney Olympics a Sunshine Coast Taskforce was formed to help our region gain maximum benefits from the event. It was an independent committee heading by Coolum businesswoman Dianne Swan, with members chosen from a variety of community sectors. There were people representing all three shires and Noosa mayor Bob Abbot played a strong role. There was overlapping success from those Games, including some great business opportunities for companies in Eumundi, Nambour and Gympie. Plus there came Olympic pools in Kawana and Noosa, an equestrian centre in Doonan and a university athletics track and basketball complex in Caloundra. The highest profile country to train here on the Coast was the defending Olympic rowing champions Holland, who based themselves out of Twin Waters and used the upper reaches of the Maroochy River. Thankfully events such as the Noosa and Mooloolaba triathlons activated the increase of interest of teams and individuals to call the Coast home for pre-training. Council CEO Brett de Chastel has got it right – “We’ll certainly encourage teams to come but we’re not going to provide financial incentives or exclude our communities from the venues.” Mr de Chastel is referring to the push from some who are suggesting our local venues can be offered for exclusive use to teams in the lead-up to the Gold Coast Games 2018. He goes on to say: “We are having discussions

As one of the country’s pre-eminent and most admired conductors, Mr Gill will spend time with music teachers from across the state providing inspiration on how they can engage students and their parents by being engaged teachers. Mr Gill will be joined by some of Queensland’s best music teachers and presenters, including Maree Henessey from Brisbane’s Somerville House who is also Lead

with various representatives from different countries about the Games and we are working closely with Tourism Noosa”. Which sadly is not the way to go with sport involvement. Coast Sport defines its own boundaries and is contested in most sports between Caboolture and Gympie. Tourism plays no role other then the marketing and branding of the bigger events, on which they do a good job. Allow me to suggest, for the good of the entire Sunshine Coast, there already is a 2018 Games Committee in place headed by para gold medallist and uni professor Brendan Burkett. The group already has State Government, schools, tourism, chamber of commerce and Coast Sports Federation involvement. Noosa councillor Sandy Bolton is the patron of the federation, so really all the bases are covered. So please work with this committee, as I am sure Big Bob would agree – let’s take a united approach to achieve great results. I suppose I should offer similar advice to Noosa Chamber of Commerce president Sarah Fisher, before her group gets too far with their push for a new convention centre. Ms Fisher’s group is targeting a 1000-seat complex – “the feasibility study is being done by volunteers who shared the vision of the project.” The J appears to be the spot chosen for the new venue, and the study should be ready in four months. Sarah, why not join forces with the already established arts and convention group which has 30 years involvement and built a major complex for the entire Sunshine Coast? Let’s all start thinking of the future. Until next time …

FRIDAY NPA ENVIRONMENT FORUM PATTERNED fens consisting of a series of pools and ridges are found extensively in the northern hemisphere, but less than 20 years ago this wetlands ecosystem was identified for the first time on Fraser Island. Others have since been located across the Great Sandy Region. These subtropical fens are globally unique and provide important habitat for rare wildlife. Dr Patrick Moss of Queensland University’s School of Geography, has been studying the fens of the Great Sandy Region. He observes that they are a valuable botanical and fire archive. Dr Moss will discuss the patterned fens at Moon Point and Wathumba on Fraser Island, as well as those near Rainbow Beach during his presentation at NPA’s Friday Environment Forum on 26 June. All are welcome to join the audience at the Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville, from 10.30am. Coffee is on offer from 10am or meet Valda in the car park at 8.30am to enjoy interpretive birding in Wallace Park. More at www.noosaparks.org.au and you can “like NPA on Facebook.

LETTERS Loss of hard-earned I HAVE just had my daughter arrive at my house stressed and crying. Yesterday, 15 June. She went to pay her rent at the bank, but as the bank had not yet opened she went across to the supermarket to buy some things. It was there that she accidently left her purse containing $1,123 plus change on the counter. The purse contained her licence, Medicare card, Centrelink card, Bankcard and various shopping cards. It wasn’t until she went across to the newsagents that she realised the purse was missing. But by the time she got back to the supermarket it was gone. So much for decency and honesty! She was left with a whole $3 in her bank! To the person who took her purse, think again or have you already spent her hard-earned money? My daughter is doing it tough and this is a great loss to her. She works two part-time jobs to make ends meet but is still struggling. If the person who took her purse can’t find it in their heart to return her money and purse, would you at least return the rest of the items, bearing in mind that her address is on the back of the licence. Also the police are reviewing the CCTV footage taken in the store. Ironically a few months ago my daughter found a wallet across the road from the RSL. There was cash in the wallet and an RSL card. She took it across to the RSL and the grateful owner claimed it. My daughter said to me, “I’d just like to think that if ever I lost my purse that some honest person would do the same for me” I guess that was not to be. We would greatly appreciate it if anyone knows anything about the purse or who found it could contact my daughter Karen on 0400 441 306. M Glaser, Tewantin.

Victimless crime NOT that many years ago Australian newspapers saw fit to print the names and addresses of men who had been found guilty of “homosexual crimes”. The newspaper journalists and editors were proud of the fact that they were exposing criminal activity and providing an important factual service to their readers. Often the result of this so-called innocent reporting was that many men lost their jobs, committed suicide, were publically ridiculed and were rejected by their friends and family. How quickly times have changed – or have they? Alarmingly today we are again seeing this same kind of reporting with regards to drug arrests together with the sickening deja vu of the same moral excuses of the journalists and editors – “Oh, but we are only reporting the facts”. As with the victimless crime of homosexuality the fate of Australian drug laws are written on the wall. Progressive societies are rapidly moving away from criminalising drugs to treating the matter as a medical and social issue. The failure of The War on Drugs is well documented and the decriminalisation of drugs is supported by many high-profile Australians such as a former federal police commissioner, Mark Palmer. The implementation of decriminalising drugs in other countries has provided us with a mass of scientific data on its success which clearly shows us this is the only rational path for Australia to follow. Prominent local political parties such as the Australian Sex Party have policies that bravely tackle the issue of drug decriminalisation and soon progressive action on this matter will happen - like it or not. It is easy to see with hindsight how quick it was for the newspapers of that time to be coopted into the so-called “moral outrage” of the day without seeing the damage it would cause to the lives of ordinary people. How can the reporting of a chef caught by police having a joint at his home serve anything but to highlight the ridiculousness of the current legislation – a complete waste of the police’s time, of the journalist’s time and perhaps causing lasting damage to the life of an ordinary Australian. Not long into the future we will again look back on this kind of reporting with shame and embarrassment and realise that we have learnt nothing from our past mistakes. Robin Bristow, Noosaville.

Consider well-being THERE is a flying fox management guideline issued by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection and under those guidelines councils can remove flying fox colonies: 3.3. The SoMI may include advice to residents noosa.starcommunity.com.au

Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville, 4566 or email: newsdesk@noosatoday.net.au

that, under the relevant code of practice, council is authorised to use non-lethal methods to: 3.3.1. Destroy a flying-fox roost, 3.3.2. Drive away, or attempt to drive away, a flying-fox from a flying-fox roost, and 3.3.3. Disturb a flying-fox in a flying-fox roost. In deciding to take any action council should consider the well-being impacts and concerns that nearby residents are experiencing. This issue is obviously affecting Kay Fielden’s well-being but what has the number of complaints got to do with council using nonlethal methods to remove the flying foxes. We are talking about a ratepayer who has had enough - I suspect Ms Fielden’s well-being is at risk and I believe that council has an overriding duty of care in this regard as they are established near her residence. Whether they would move next to another house during attempts to move them is hypothetical. If relocation is performed correctly this won’t happen. These management guidelines clearly state: “Potential management actions can range from minimal intervention, through to moderate vegetation modification, through to complete clearing of roost vegetation and driving flyingfoxes away.” These guidelines do not mention anything about relocation being likely to make matters worse, they talk about moderate interventions such as “nudging” or “buffering”, processes by which the impact of an existing roost may be managed by its reduction. Councillor Wellington says that relocation attempts show that new camps are established between 200 to 900 metres from the target camp. The guidelines state: “Consider having staff on lookout immediately prior to dawn, so that driving away can commence before flying-foxes land at the site. Staff at the roost site should be fully prepared prior to dawn, and mobile team/s on standby, to enable a co-ordinated response. Each team should consider using multiple non-lethal methods simultaneously (for example, foggers, sound and light).” It seems if these guidelines were followed there would not be any close re-establishment - surely council can give it a go to make life a bit better for Ms Fielden and others in the area concerned. The research I have done has not established it as a fact that attempted relocation will make matters worse. If they are not moved straight away when they are in the early stages of making a roost they will settle and it will be harder. This is where council has failed - relocation should have occurred in the early stages of them setting up camp. I wonder what would happen if Councillor Wellington or the mayor lived in the same house? I am sure something would have a happened long ago. Ross Taylor, Pomona.

Our turn to bat REFERRING to Kay Fielden’s letter (Noosa Today, 18 June), I have followed the recent correspondence in the paper about the bat problem in Wallace Park and can well understand how upsetting it must be for the residents of this area. Coincidentally I happened to have read this same week in the Sunshine Coast Daily of the bat problem that had existed in Coolum. In this case the Sunshine Coast Council had taken steps to move the bats on from the area, much to the relief of Coolum residents. It was mentioned that for the first time in some years, real estate in the affected street has successfully sold. This makes me wonder if the Sunshine Coast Council and the Noosa Council have had joint discussion and exchange of expertise about what appears to be a common serious bat problem? The obvious point here is that although they are two quite separate councils involved here, the geographic distance between Coolum and Wallace Park is very short, especially when flying distance is considered. One has to ask the obvious question. If the bats have been moved on from Coolum, where did they go? Could they have moved to Wallace Park? Perhaps the Noosa Council, the Sunshine Coast Council and Wallace Park residents

Light’s on, no-one home I HAD a phone call yesterday from a very polite gentleman informing me that it is important to ensure our solar panels are clean so as not to miss out on the full effect of the sun’s rays. I listened to his every pre-recorded words as the rain and clouds blocked out the view of the postman delivering our new electricity account. He finished with “press 1 if you would like further information.“ Being my usual anything for a laugh self and also being a smarty as we don’t have solar panels I pressed 2, but they obviously don’t clean household windows. E. Wright, Sunrise Beach.

A serve for Lobb FOR many years I have read and tolerated the negative tirades of Peregian Springs resident John Lobb. Not once do I recall a positive statement or offer by Mr Lobb. It would be appreciated if Mr Lobb would share with us what contributions he, personally, has made to our community. Has he been a member of any voluntary organisation to improve the lot of those less fortunate? Has he submitted to Noosa Council any economic budget which would be of assistance to council and us, as residents? Over to you, Mr Lobb! Charles Wilson, Noosa Heads.

Blowing in the wind LORD of the Admiralty, Sir Pository of Wisdom (AKA Minister for Women), suffering from a bad case of flatulence, has declared war on any new-fangled inventions involving wind. He believes that these are ‘awful’ and have caused his health problems. Although an exponent of the power of hot air and wind, ‘reduce, reduce, reduce’ has become his new three-word mantra. For whatever it takes to get Team Australia sailing back to the last century, his crew of sloganeers will, like automatons, spin for the team. Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.

Mayor doesn’t rate NOOSA mayor Noel Playford last year delivered to Noosa a zero rates increase however only achieved this with an austerity budget, dismissal of more than 100 workers, under delivery of council’s asset maintenance schedule (roads, bridges, stormwater and drainage), slash and burn of community grants. Even given this poor result the mayor again proposed a zero rates increase for next year, which was not supported by fellow councillors who proposed 1.3 per cent increase. This increase will fall short in correcting the damage done with the previous zero increase. Answers need to be given why the mayor proposed zero increase next year but planned 3.5 per cent rates increase each year for the next 10 years. Jeff Nuske, Noosa Heads.

Comedic double bill NOW that’s what I call perfect program planning. The ABC on Tuesday 16 June screened The Killing Season, followed appropriately on Wednesday 17 June with Would I Lie to You. These must be two of the best comedies on TV this year. E. Wright Sunrise Beach.

He doesn’t like it JOHN Lobb doesn’t like the Noosa Council we get it, we know, he’s been telling us since before de-amalgamation. So why must we read about it again and again in just about every other issue of our Noosa papers? I’m curious, can anyone with a fixation on a single topic get their raves published ad nauseam or is this just a special consideration reserved for John Lobb? Woody Dass, Noosaville.

SUNSHINE BEACH 20 Depper Street Thank You to Mike, and the Team at Century 21. Quite frankly, if you are going to buy or sell a home at Sunshine Beach then you need to be with Agents who “live and breathe” the area!!! Over the past 15 years we have bought and sold with Mike several times and, contrary to popular belief, it has been a simple, no fuss, dare I say, even pleasant experience. It’s not just Bricks and Mortar to him. He really tries to fit the client to the property and leave no stone unturned in trying to make the entire process stress - free for all parties concerned; this includes some above and beyond the call after sales care. Mike is passionate about his job, knows the area like the back of his hand, listens, is personable and doesn’t promise what he can’t deliver. Great service, keen professionalism and dedication to the objective are a brilliant combination that gets the job done. Again thanks Mike, we’ll be back!!!! Regards Merrilyn Nagorcka

SUNSHINE BEACH 2 Bowman Street When I made the decision to sell my Sunshine Beach Investment property I contacted multiple agents, including Century 21 Conolly Hay Group, as I have worked with Rachel in her previous rolls, I knew she would be the right person to not only facilitate the sale of our house but to achieve an incredible result. I believe that Rachel’s dedication and enthusiasm to me as a client has been inimitable. Her focus on the end result was beyond question and her encouraging advice and detailed reporting during the process was appreciated. From my first meeting with Rachel I had every confidence I was in the right hands and have no hesitation in recommending her to others who value professionalism, honesty and integrity. Again, Thank you for all your hard work. Paul Street

Units popular as building runs hot WITH dwelling approvals hitting record high levels over recent months, CoreLogic RP Data senior research analyst Cameron Kusher has highlighted the biggest moving regions. According to CoreLogic there were 214,331 dwelling approvals over the past year, 45.9 per cent of which were for units. Mr Kusher said the surge in dwelling approvals had co-incided with very low interest rates and surging demand from the investment segments of the market. Across the combined capital cities more than half of all dwelling approvals were for units and in each capital city (except Adelaide, Perth and Hobart) more than 50 per cent of approvals over the past year were for units, according to Mr Kusher. “Data from the 2011 Census shows that across the country, units are more than twice as likely to be rented as houses,” he said. “This would indicate a clear preference from the investment segment which is currently so active, for units over houses.” Mr Kusher said while the number of new dwellings being approved was significant, it was worthwhile examining on a smaller scale the regions where the new housing supply was being approved. “Looking at dwelling approvals across SA4 regions of the country, we have listed the top 20 regions for approvals for both houses and units over the 2014-15 financial year to April 2014,” he said.

Apartment living is on the rise according to CoreLogic RP Data’s latest statistics. “For houses, the region with the greatest

LIVETODAY Taking nothing away from Owen Wright’s history-making performance at the Fiji Pro last week (two perfect 20 point heats in the one event), it was great to see Coolum’s Julian Wilson continue the brilliant form he’s shown all year. Although Wright outflanked him from the outset in a one-sided final, Jules surfed brilliantly and confidently up to that point, looking like, well, a world champion. His second place puts him number four on the rankings, just behind Owen, with both Aussies shaping up as contenders to slow down the Brazilian Storm. Picture: WSL

Less is more in old Ipoh brine PHIL JARRATT

UNLESS we told you, you’d probably never spot this sexy new hotel cleverly built over and around an ancient cafe. Fittingly, the eight standard rooms are designed to blend in with the structure’s original elements think peeling paint, worn wood floors and chipped plaster. Lonely Planet Guide to Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, 2013. I’m not a slave to travel guides by any means, but I was glad that I’d downloaded an e-version of the Lonely Planet Guide as we arrived in Ipoh, described as “one of Malaysia’s more pleasant midsized cities, chock-full of colonial architecture”, but the 100-yearold railway station proved disappointing, despite its debts to the Taj Mahal and Moorish grandeur. The hotel attached to it was “closed for renovation” but there were no workmen in sight and our taxi driver said it had been closed a very long time, so I flipped open the Lonely Planet again to the quirky entry above, and asked the driver to take us to the Sekeping Kong Heng. I calculated we were no more than a few blocks from it, but he’d never heard of it, and we circled the block twice before I spotted the faded sign above the “ancient cafe”. Even in the Chinese cafe, where a few crusty old locals were slurping up their noodle lunches, no-one seemed too sure, but they pointed to an alley alongside and we wheeled our bags along the brickwork.

A Chinese man of about my age called to us from behind a scruffy window, and I wondered if he was selling postcards or something for erectile dysfunction, but when we inquired about the hotel he replied in perfect English that yes, indeed, this was the reception desk for the Sekeping, and his name was David and would we like a guided tour? Our bags were placed in a goods basket and winched upwards as David opened the padlocked gate and led us up the meshmetal staircase. The Sekeping had clearly grown in and around the cluster of dilapidated shophouses since the Lonely Planet visit, and we were led through a rabbit warren of chic rooms and studios, roof gardens and a stark concrete pool looking out over the clock towers and steeples of the old town. From here in one broad sweep you got a feel for how this place must have been more than a century ago, when it was one of the most prosperous towns in South East Asia, with the British making a fortune from tin mining and the Chinese from feeding and clothing them. We chose a room in the mid-range (about $70) and spent about an hour marvelling at its industrial chic minimalism. Some of the walls looked more or less original, scarred and chipped, and the window frames and shutters were paint-peeled and battered. There was a concrete bench under the window and a hard chair that would be my office, and the bed (the only comfortable thing in the room) afforded a clear view of the metal-framed and glass-encased shower and toilet, perhaps not exactly what you need when you’re living on a diet of Asian street food. But we loved the Sekeping, and found

it hard to leave the confines of the courtyard below, where crude concrete and brickwork walls gave way to a boutique, air-conditioned cafe and wine bar, and even a barber shop. And not a hipster in sight! As for the rest of Ipoh, well, not so much. I read somewhere that the city was becoming a magnet for Australian retirees. As much as we liked the Sekeping, we won’t be joining them. From Ipoh we took a bus up the mountains and onto the Cameron Highlands, where we stayed at the quaint Hillview Inn in Tana Rata. The Hillview must have had a postcard view back in the day, but besablock mega-development has seen to that, as it has over much of the Camerons, where the tea plantations and strawberry farms are punctuated by new shopping malls and mock-Tudor resort hotels. But the Camerons are still a Mecca for bushwalkers and backpackers, and the ramshackle streets of Tana Rata echo the golden years of the denim trail through Asia. On a cool evening last week, I found a bottle shop on the main street where I purchased a Chilean chardonnay for $10 and took it down the road to a rough-looking Indian joint where we sat at a bench just above the noise and fumes of the motorcycles and enjoyed the best $3 meal I’ve had for about 35 years. Now we’re at the northernmost point of our journey, on the tiny island of Rebak in the Langkawi group, just below Thailand, chilling out for a while before heading to the east coast. This is a one-resort island, Indian owned and managed, with an almost exclusively Indian clientele. The food is excellent, but it ain’t three bucks a meal, I can tell you.

To peel or not to peel?

SHARON Cassidy from Riverside Beauty answers the question - to peel or not to peel? “The skin is a live organ whose cellular components undergo a dynamic and continuous renewal process,” she said. “The velocity and efficacy of the skin drops as we age. Discolouration, sagginess, open pores and dullness are the earliest consequence of this physiological process.” According to Sharon, acids are among the most innovative technology and dermo

cosmetic products available to aesthetic professionals are the most versatile treatment option able to address a variety of aesthetic concerns. “Chemical solutions are used to create controlled aggression on top of the skin,” Sharon said. “With an increased cell turnover after acid stimuli, peels offer benefits such as attenuation of wrinkles, refined pores, replenishment and tightening of the tissue. “All peels have two common goals. They exfoliate to remove imperfections located

on the top layer of the skin and upon the different characteristics of the acids used, stimulate the skin's renewal system resulting in better hydration, more even skin tone and luminosity. “Peels are a versatile weapon to achieve spectacular skin changes and can be combined with other therapies such as IPL or microdermabrasion.” To find out more about using acids to rejuvenate your skin, phone Riverside Beauty on 5449 9744 or drop into their salon on Thomas Street, Noosaville.

The clear choice

1184345-KC20-15

DISCOVER the benefits of certified organic bone broths and stay healthy this winter. Noosa Cleanse, Australia’s first certified organic unpasteurised cold press juice company is now offering 24-hour certified organic bone broths which are designed to heal the gut lining and reduce areas of inflammation. Produced and available from Belmondos Organic Market in Noosaville, the broths are made of organic produce including include chicken, carrot, celery, onion, celtic sea salt, black peppercorns and can also be used as

a nourishing and healing alternative to conventional bouillon cubes and store-bought stock. The broths are endorsed by Dr Vivienne Taylor of Ibuki Health and Wellness. “Poorly digested food particles are absorbed directly through the gut wall into the blood stream causing the immune system to react to these food antigens, setting up an antigen/antibody response – hence the start of Auto Immune diseases throughout the body. All disease starts in the gut

as we have known for centuries – heal and seal the gut lining damaged by abnormal microflora with bone broth,” she said. “Unprocessed organic grass-fed meat, chicken or fish broths provide the building blocks for the rapidly growing cells of the gut lining to repair as well as soothing any areas of inflammation in the gut”. To order your Noosa Cleanse broth email orders@ noosacleanse.com.au or visit www.noosacleanse.com. au and enjoy some certified healthy goodness.

A little goes a long way UP to 80 per cent of Australian households are involved in some kind of bird feeding. Dave from Noosaville Stockfeed and Pet Supplies asks the question, are we creating a generation of bird bludgers dependent on handouts? While this topic is still up for debate, what is of concern for our local avian friends is the feeding of sunflower seed. What’s the best way to feed native birds? To put it simply, moderation is the key and try to avoid black sunflower seed as a rule. The oil content of black sunflower is quite high and along with over feeding the grey striped variety it can cause certain birds to suffer a nutritional imbalance. Imbalanced diets often result in poor bone and feather development which may severely impede the animal’s ability to fly and reduce its life expectancy.

Are we creating a generation of bird bludgers dependent on handouts? So like all good things, moderation is the key and also let them naturally forage for some of their own food source.

Jack turns seven this month and enjoys walkies along the Noosa River and Noosa Main Beach and loves to make friends with everyone he meets. Jack’s mum, Christina, said he has a beautiful nature. “Jack is always wagging his tail and is just so happy all the time despite suffering from severe epilepsy for most of his young life,” she said. “Jack’s attitude is ‘whatever’. IT was a full team effort with the whole Junior Pirates Junior Rugby League Under Seven White team receiving Man-of-the-Match honours. The Whites took on the Sharks at Cooroy in a tight game between two welldrilled teams. The Pirates Whites tackled their hearts out with fantastic defence from Cooper Ward, Sam Proctor and Cooper Drinnan. Jai Bruggy led from the front as captain with some great charges and Lukas Byers ran the ball hard every time he touched it. Bailey Drinnan scored three tries and Rhy North also crossed for a four pointer. It was a great team effort with the whole side receiving manof-the match honours. There was no stopping the Under Seven Yellow team, as Player of the Match Cooper Payne showed them who was in charge defending and attacked like a super hero. Hayden, Jacko, Lachlan and Jaxon all proved too strong as they attacked the line with precision and came away with some spectacular tries. Riley continues to improve his game each week as he gets involved in both attack and defence, always with a smile on his face. Brandon defended and ran hard as he left some blood on the field for the sharks to trail. In the Under 8s, the Coolum Colts were the unlucky opposition this week for the under 8 Yellow Noosa Pirates. Pierce and Zahn continue to show no fear in attack with both boys running head on into the opposition. Lincoln’s linking runs and off-loads created excellent attacking opportunities in open play. Joe Tolano once again chased everything down like a

little terrier and must run several kilometres during each match. Lachlan Ward was rewarded with a sneaky try with excellent reading of the play on last tackle options. Under 9 Blue Today, the boys travelled to Coolum to play the Colts. This team just keeps getting better each week, with some defence shown by Declan, Dylan, Roy, Taj, Josh, Jhemi and Dhuriki, all showing great tackling displays. Great running shown from Lachy, Jett, Stoan, Benny, Cohyn and Cody, all with some very strong runs. Under 10 Blue It was a terrific effort from all the players. Even though some of the kids had not played together and were playing in different positions, they played with determination and worked as a team. Player of the match was Liam with strong running and some brilliant try saving defence. Under 10 Yellow This week Under 10 Yellow played at Coolum. Jed Bullman scored twice, Caleb Hart, Jordan and Jackson Smith also crossed over to score. The team displayed the best defence effort of the season and kept the opposition scoreless. Dylan ran some quick darts from dummy half,

Ryan Fielding-Smith was active out on his wing and Charlie Cook tackled very hard. Man of the match went to Kaiden. After a very hard and at times niggling match, the team song was heard very loud and proud. Go Pirates! Under 12 Gold The boys put in a good effort, but were no match for Coolum who were a welldrilled side and just too good on the day. Three points today goes to prop Kade Grazotis who got better as the game went on, two points to Aston Steele for another solid effort and one point goes to Javier Iriondo for going out in the second half and doing exactly what was asked of him. Keep your heads and spirits up boys. Under 14 Blue This week’s game was against Caboolture and the referee, the final score was 24/22 it was a loss but the guys did so well. Special mention goes to Chase, Jake, Harry and Jamie for outstanding defence. Tries went to Chase (2), Jake (1), Josh (1) and Liam (1) and a conversion to Jamie. Man of the match went to Harry Taylor, the best game he’s played this year. Just an outstanding effort today and at one point we only had 12 on the field and didn’t give up.

Cavs pip Noosa in a thriller By RICHARD MURRIHY THE Noosa 15s went down in a thriller in a mixed day of softball for the club at Caboolture on Saturday against Cavs. A beautiful day greeted the side on Saturday at Caboolture the 15s as usual were up first to absorb the dew, they got off to a good start on the back of another Riley home run to get four runs in. The second innings saw three up three down with Cavs putting on five runs and Noosa producing five fielding errors. The third saw much of the same with Cavs getting another five runs whilst Noosa stayed on four. However, Noosa then woke from their slumber and the runs flowed. Needing six to get Cavs to bat again, they fell just one short and going down 10-9 in a thriller. The 17 blacks took on the undefeated demons. And even

Riley Murrihy. though the score-line looked one-sided, it was a very good game to watch. Shinai pitched to three up three down innings to start off while Noosa put on five runs, Lewis hitting a two-bagger helped a few home, it was a very good team effort from Noosa with all players doing their roles. Shinai also hit a three bagger to help a couple home, Noosa won 16-1.

The Whites were on the opposite diamond and Dylan hit a good hit to get the runners home while Jarred B hit a three bagger and got home on a wild throw to get three runners home, again the team played more like a team. To top off the day, Noosa men’s also had a win 14-6 with all players chipping in, Gary hit a home run, as did Coady, Riley, Lewis, Kane and William all got two baggers.

Dolphins boys show their best NOOSA FINS’ Under 7s drew with Caloundra Lighthouse 50-all in a day of mixed fortunes for Noosa Dolphins teams. The Fins started off at a fast pace with some amazing tagging from all players while charging down Caloundra. The speed and quick side stepping of Rory McIntyre, Charlie McKerrow, Harry Marlow and Angus Anderssen allowed these boys all in for tries. Between them these four players scored 10 tries – the Fins’ best so far for the season. Phoenix Ericson-Wirth made some great forward play with the ball tucked neatly under his arm and gave some successful passes out for the Fins to be able to score. Campbell Byrne was always in the play showing his skills at tagging and running the ball. Player of the match went to Stirling Worrall. The Under 7 Reds were also involved in a high scoring game going down 50-40 to Matthew Flinders. The loss to the classy Matthew Flinders outfit was a timely shake-up for the guys as they head into the midseason break to reflect on their efforts. Zac’s unending dedication on defence couldn’t stop a rollicking Flinders second half surge. It wasn’t all bad news, though, as player of the match Jax put in a couple of good runs as did Noah and Darcy.

Harry seemed oblivious to the scoreline as he dotted down twice, Conor combined well with Will in the midfield and Sarena brushed off the score deficit as easily as she brushed off defenders on her way to two tries. Under 9 Brothers 45 d Fins 20 Captain Finn ran the boys out on the field. Defence was solid for the initial phases with most of the play contained to the centre passage of the field. Passing it wide Brothers opened the scoring with two quick tries. The game settled and both teams shared possession. Forwards Remy, Hunter and Jack had another consistent game making good ground in attack and backing it up in defence. Saatchan and Kaleb showed plenty of speed and determination, making several good runs towards the line. Backs, Jaxon, Odette, Finn and Joch once again showed persistence managing to pull themselves up from the bottom of the ruck after being swallowed by strong defence by breaking free from the line and scoring a run away try in the corner. Second half and a quickly shuffled interchange allowed Tyler to once again cross the line in the corner within the first minutes, crossing in the corner from a restart before backing it up again in the 30th minute.

Brothers ran in three tries to finish off the game. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match: Tyler. Under 10 Fins 22 d Reds 5 There was a great game between the two Noosa teams which was made possible due to an outstanding young referee in Adam. Try scorers for the Fins were Matt with two powerhouse runs, Flynn with a fleet footed barnstorming effort and Cam with a tactical piece of genius. Jack Caspers slotted a lovely conversion. For the Reds, Dan crashed over. Domino’s Pizza Players of the Match: Matt and Dan Cashman. Under 11 Fins 62 d Eumundi Dragons 0 Another great team effort with the Fins getting closer to a complete performance all over the park. A consistently high work rate combined with ever improving skills resulted in 10 tries and proved too much for a brave opposition. Try scorers: Lochie Dudgeon (4), Ethan Pohlner (2), Charlie Archer, Jarrah Charlesworth, Noa Penitani, Josh Whitehill. Conversions: James Gelling (3), Charlie Archer, Jarrah Charlesworth, Ethan Pohlner. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match: Noa Penitani.

IT WAS a hard-earned win by Noosa White this week, defeating Nambour Golden Cats by three goals to two. Goals were scored by DJ Tantayakorn, Charlee Benton and Eli Robinson who had several worthy shots at goal. Again, great defence by Adler Lenitschek who also had some great efforts in attack. Star goalie Micah Elvy is unstoppable, diving fearlessly to save the day. Kiri Todhunter got possession, broke away and made a good run, taking the ball right up to the goal. Under 7 Gold played a strong and exciting game against the unity vipers, scoring three goals to the Vipers’ five, Bella Hillegers, Harrison Howard and Joel Fitzgerald scoring each of the goals. Joel Fitzgerald won player of the match with the goal of the year! This week our Under 8 Black team had another win, winning 7-1 to the Buderim Panthers.

The Noosa Eagles went out hard scoring their first goal within the first minute. The boys did an excellent job with Keiran Dow constantly in fighting for the ball and Jake MacDonald also showing how much he has improved. Charlie Drew did a great job as always as the all-rounder with a big kick on him in defence. Goal kickers this week were Alaska Rosenkranz (4), Ethan Messenger (2) and Jaimen Slavin (1). One thing learnt this week was to just have a go, the worse that can happen is to miss. That’s just what the boys did – had a go! Great effort. Goalies Isaac Benjamin and Jaimen Slavin both stood their ground only letting one well deserved goal slip through. Under 10 Noosa Gold played against Caloundra Green at Maroochydore. Noosa lost 1-2. Goal scored by Jude Youens. Player of the week was Oscar Morgan.

Fresh mullet strips, whole pilchards, prawns and salted bonito fillets have all been ideal baits. Up around the headlands in Noosa national park we have seen some good quality snapper and trevally. In the fresh water, Lake Macdonald has fished well with soft plastics fished along the weed edges and still producing good numbers of bass. If the fish are being a bit fussy anglers should try clipping a spinner onto their jighead or rig them on a rev head to add a bit of flash or vibration. In the open water, blades and tailspinners have been scoring some nice fish. Trolling diving lures such as Baby Cranks is a simple, yet effective technique especially if there are young ones on board. So, on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures!

THE Noosa River is still coming up with the goods! In the river there have been some outstanding catches of bream recently. This would have to be one of the best years we have seen for bream. The river mouth, Woods Bay and Gympie terrace have all come up with the goods. There have been some good quality fish taking a liking to prawns, yabbies, and mullet strips, also small lightly weighted soft plastics have worked a treat. Anglers should try to time their attack for the incoming tide. Trevally have again featured high on a lot of angler hit lists over the past week with good sized golden and giant trevally taken around Noo-

There is also the odd jewie up towards the lakes. With the wind still up a little over the past week, most offshore anglers have tended to head for the closer reefs, sunshine has featured highly with some good quality coral trout, sweetlip, mori cod and snapper all hitting the decks. Earlier on in the week some anglers made the trip up to North Reef and bagged some good quality fish including jewies and pelagics. With the wind still around that 15 knots zone, it is just enough to make things a little uncomfortable for anglers. On the beach the fishing has been great, good bream, tailor and flathead have been inhabiting the gutter on Noosa’s North Shore, an early start will give the best result with the wind seeming to get stronger later in the day.

Noosa Tennis is holding holiday clinics these school holidays.

Have a ball for the holidays By DAVE McMAHON THESE school holidays the Noosa Tennis Club will be holding holiday clinics from 9am until noon. The clinics are a great way for children to get out of the house and into the sun for some fun with their friends while getting all the practice they need for tennis. In the past year and a half the club has experienced some of the best clinics ever. They have had at least 25 players attending, some faces seen before as well as many new faces, all of various levels. Throughout the three-hour session the clinics start with skills of the game being taught, then rally games and point play. Among this, many other fun games are played to develop children’s general skills and fitness. By the end of the week the children will be introduced to match play and prize day will happen on Friday. The cost is only $30 a day or $110 for a consecutive week. The clinic will be held from Monday 29 June to Friday 3 July and then again on Monday 6 July to Friday 10 July. For more information or to register, phone Dave at Noosa Tennis on 5474 5494 or email davesnoosatennis@ yahoo.com.au

The Sunshine Beach Surf Club Nipper program is looking to expand in the next season.

sport today NOOSA’S BEST SPORTS COVERAGE

Nippers plan ahead of season By DEAN SMALLMAN WHILE the Nipper season may seem like a long way off, the dedicated Junior Activities team at Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) has been busy planning a bigger and better year. Under the direction of Dave Gleeson, the 2014/'15 year was a standout year at Sunshine with Nipper

numbers reaching capacity, success at Nipper carnivals never greater and traditional Nipper Sundays delivering both a fun and educational platform from which the clubs lifesaving ranks continue to fill. There were a number of key factors that contributed to the enormous success at Sunshine last season; the great work of the coaches, led by local legend Max Pettigrove and sup-

ported by the much-loved Alex Austin cannot be underestimated. The tremendous support of the management committee that continues to invest (as a priority) in the Nipper programme and, of course, the amazing parents and kids that continue to make this club such a great place to be a part of. This coming season Sunshine Beach Nippers has decided to lift

its previous cap on Nipper numbers, which will no-doubt see its success continue and enable many other local families to experience just how great this club really is. The much anticipated sign-on days will commence late August with the first Nipper Sunday in late September. This however has not stopped the club from competing as over 20 Nippers last weekend competed in a Pool

Rescue carnival at Kawana and with training numbers for this off-season programme never higher, the results for the pool rescue team at states and Aussies in the coming months, looks all but assured. Rainbow’s golden threads Between the

flags RON LANE

LAST Saturday night 20 June will be for our brothers in arms at the Rainbow Beach Surf Life Saving Club a night to remember. For on this occasion, some 266 people gathered at the club house to celebrate their 50 years of patrolling Rainbow Beach. Happy to relate no lives lost while members on patrol. In recognising the contribution to the community guest of honour, Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, MP, said in part, “I congratulate the club, and I am very proud to have been involved with this great club for 25 years, and I have enjoyed my association very much.” To say that a man of this calibre has maintained his association for such a long period of time, speaks volumes as to the character of the club. Among the many e-mails of congratulations was one from the Noosa club. There were two reasons for this. One being acknowledgement of their outstanding achievement and the second being perhaps the most important of all; celebrating our continued relationship. The relationship started in 1965 when yours truly received a phone call from State Centre informing us that a group of concerned citizens in Gympie were making inquiries regarding the formation of a surf club at Rainbow. We were requested to attend a meeting at the Gympie Town

Hall, listen to the discussion and pass on the information relevant to their request. After the discussion, followed by a question and answer time, the meeting voted overwhelming to proceed with the project. The first officially called meeting was held at the Freemasons Hotel in Mary Street, and the minutes were recorded by Dan Young; Young was to go on to hold the office of club treasurer for a period of seven years. To get the club off the ground, a squad of young volunteers were sent to the Noosa club from Gympie to be trained and obtain their bronze medallion; I had the honour of being appointed trainer. They were Gregg Biddle, Russell Hodges, Norman Ryan, Bill Marriott, Howard Donald and Alan Friskie. After obtaining their bronze, they returned to Rainbow and the massive task of establishing the club was commenced. In later years, Greg Biddle was to become one of the first Rainbow members to be awarded the club's highest honour, Life Membership. The problem of building a clubhouse was overcome when the old Tamaree School building was relocated to the present site, courtesy of Widgee Shire Council. Among those to be heavily involved in the erection of the clubhouse was Cliff Kuhn of Gympie and former shire chairman and councilor Neil Buchanan. For Cliff Kuhn, this project was to be just the start of what was to become a very illustrious career. In the years that followed, Kuhn was to hold the position of club secretary from 1965

This member was just one of the many who made their mark in this great club. If you happen to visit, spend time reading their Honour Board for here appears the names of management committee members who have given time and effort for many years. Names such as Gavin, Young, McCarthy, Biddle, Neuman, Kidd, Wewer, Lehman, Greaney and Langton, just to name a few. Next to this is the frame that contains the photos of the truly hon-

oured, the Life Members. These are the men and women who played a major role in achieving their present status. Through the years our two clubs have, on countless occasions joined together in training camps covering subjects such as patrolling, competition, IRB and nippers. From the business side, our supporter club manager Anton Mogg, has also been heavily involved with Rainbow in matters of administration. On a more personal level, in 1957 Doug Chapman of Gympie and I trained in the same bronze squad. After some time, Doug left us but later resumed his career as a patrol

Also Dave O’Donnell former club captain of Noosa went to live in Rainbow Beach joined the surf club and went on to hold positions on the committee. It is to be hoped that in the seasons ahead, the two clubs will continue their mutual involvement in all aspects of lifesaving and above all that priceless commodity, mateship. These factors are truly the basics of our surf club life. noosa.starcommunity.com.au
