lawyer said. “The intervention order is in place now,” the lawyer said. “Her understanding is she can’t make any contact with the complainant. In a police interview, the applicant said of the girlfriend: “I know that she’s not a good woman. “She usually steals other people’s husbands and makes up stories to provoke. “Unfortunately, my husband is stupid... she is a 61-year-old woman.” Magistrate Julie O’Donnell initially said on the face of the summary she wouldn’t grant bail given the ongoing offending including assault and persistent returning to the victim’s home. “On that summary, I have real concerns. “I’m granting bail on the basis that the prosecution have done an assessment of the risk and aren’t opposed to bail.” The applicant was bailed under conditions of surrendering her passport, staying at a fixed residence and tri-weekly reporting to Springvale Police Station. She was also placed on a 12-month intervention order to protect the complainant. She next appears at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 30 July.

A MAGISTRATE has overridden her “real concerns” by bailing a 52-year-old Springvale woman on charges of assaulting and threatening to kill her separated husband’s new “girlfriend”. The woman, who can’t be identified due to a court suppression order, had allegedly struck the victim’s head about 30 times with a “hard object” at the victim’s home on 10 February, according to a police bail summary. The applicant - on bail at the time on upcoming money laundering charges - pulled the victim’s hair and allegedly said: “If you still be (my husband’s) girlfriend I kill you, I kill your daughters, I kill your family in Vietnam. “This time just hit you, next time I kill you.” According to the summary tabled in court on Monday, the applicant “knows many bad people, her sons are involved in crime and drugs and could easily have (the victim) killed. “The accused also has a lot of connections with gangs in Vietnam and could have (the victim’s sister) killed.” The victim alleged she had been sent numerous text messages from the applicant, threat-

ening that “people are going to kill her”, stated the police bail summary report. The applicant and her son allegedly attended the girlfriend’s home “numerous times” in February, March and April. Each time, the victim hid and did not answer the door, and had since moved from the address out of fear. At the victim’s home on 8 June, her daughter’s boyfriend was grabbed and wrestled by the applicant’s son and struck to the head by the applicant. During the exchange, the applicant said: “Tell your mother she will never f***ing be with my husband.” The son allegedly produced a metal pole and said: “I’m f***ing coming back and you will get what you deserve.” Police prosecutor Senior Constable Joshua Diemar, who didn’t oppose bail, told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that the applicant’s risk of re-offending could be alleviated by strict bail conditions The victim’s defence lawyer said her client had been married for 28 years before her husband “moved in with the new woman” without explanation in February. Since then, the husband had cut himself off from the applicant and her four children, the

$20m tax bill over shut down store By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

A BUSINESSMAN has said he owes more than $20 million to Australian Tax Office and other creditors after the shut down of his furniture stores on Princes Highway, Dandenong. John Apostolidis, director of Yarrabee Investments - which owns Leather Lounges Direct and Dekabu Leather - said he was not a dishonest person and that his tax liabilities of more than $20 million were a “secondary issue”. “They only came in lately,” he said. Mr Apostolidis said his main trouble was with an insurer, after he lost more than $7 million in a business fire in 2007. He said he had lost a court battle

with his insurer, which refused his claim because he had failed to notify them of his criminal record. He said his only crime was an assault for an “unfortunate fist-fight”. “If I steal from a bank or defrauded a credit card company I’m a dishonest person. “But my insurer says I should have notified them. “The reality is I lost. This is one of those f***-up situations.” Mr Apostolidis, who was recently taken to the Supreme Court by the Federal Commissioner of Taxation, said his taxation case had closed. “I’ve received a letter that I had to be evicted from my house and properties because of the taxation bill. “It’s psychological. One day,

you’re worth a lot of money, the next you’re on the street. “People don’t know about this yet - it’s embarrassing.” He denied his company was in receivership “at this stage”. Star News Group, the publisher of this newspaper, is seeking money owed by Mr Apostolidis’s closeddown stores for a series of advertisements, including ‘closing down sale’ promotions. His company Yarrabee Investments ran foul of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission for a series of newspaper advertisements in 2009. The ACCC found Yarrabee had used “non-genuine” recommendedretail prices as a comparison for their “now only” prices for mattresses.

IN BRIEF Jail for murdering wife

In 2010, the Australian Taxation Office became an applicant to a protracted legal property settlement dispute between Mr Apostolidis and his former de facto partner, as well as freezing his and his companies’ assets. During the initial Supreme Court trial Justice Kim Hargrave said Mr Apostolidis had been convicted of “a number of criminal offences, many involving violence, threats of violence, and abusive language”. According to one of the case appeals in 2011, the ATO issued tax liability assessments of more than $14 million. Mr Apostolidis’s tax liability and debts to other creditors were at this stage “substantially” exceeding his assets.

Twenty five years later, police have been able to link the death to an assault in Dandenong seven months before. finished his shift and said he was also going to Noble Park, where the woman lived. The taxi driver was now using a different car, believed to be a dark blue Holden Kingswood or similar. He dropped off the male friend in Doveton before telling the woman he would take her to her home in Noble Park. But instead he drove to the police paddocks in Baden Powell Drive, Dandenong, where he raped her before dropping her outside the South Eastern Hospital. She reported the attack to police the next day. The driver at the time was described as European or Lebanese,

POLICE are looking for a man who grabbed at a 10-year-old boy in Noble Park as he walked home from school. The boy was walking along Jacksons Road about 3.30pm on Monday 22 June when the man grabbed him by the arm and took the 10-year-old’s backpack. The offender made no demands but ran off with the backpack. The boy returned to school where he told a teacher about the incident and it was reported to police. The backpack was later found in the front yard of a nearby property.

Drunk slumped over wheel

POLICE allegedly found a serial drink driver slumped over his wheel in a Dandenong carpark with a .219 blood alcohol reading. Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Scott Roberts said officers received a call to Bunnings on the corner of Gladstone Road and Princes Highway in the early hours of Thursday 18 June. He said the Glen Waverley man, 29, tried to drive away when police approached but they intercepted him. Sen Sgt Roberts said the driver returned a blood alcohol concentration reading of .219 his fourth drink driving offence and his third high-range reading in less than five years. “This sort of stuff is just outrageous,” Sen Sgt Roberts said. Police charged the driver with drink driving and impounded his vehicle. He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

It’s believed he had an accent but spoke English well, and was often seen at Timmy’s cafe. Seven months later, on 21 March 1989, police investigated a suspicious death in Caulfield. The body of 21-year-old Nichala Barber was found on Malakoff Street about 6.30am. Detectives, who said her body was dumped from a car, retained DNA from the scene but no suspects were ever identified. A BREAKTHROUGH in DNA research has led police to link an unsolved rape in Dandenong to a suspicious cold case death in Caulfield - more than 25 years after both crimes. Detective Senior Constable Jess Mastroianni from the Cold Case Missing Person Squad called on the public on Friday to help solve the rape at Baden Powell Drive, Dandenong, in 1988, and the suspicious death of a woman in Caulfield in 1989. DNA was retained from both crimes in the hope that new technology would eventually lead to a breakthrough in the investigation. Now a review of cold cases, starting in 2012, has resulted in a potential link between the two. The sexual assault occurred in the early hours of Monday 15 August 1989. Police have been told a then 21-year-old woman was out in St Kilda with a male friend the night before when they hailed a taxi in Fitzroy Street and headed to Mandate night club in Barkly Street. The fare came to $10, however the taxi driver told them not to worry about paying. Sometime later around 2am on Monday, the woman and her friend went to Timmy’s Cafe on Fitzroy Street, where they saw the same taxi driver. He bought the pair coffees and offered to drive them home as he’d

Carl or Carlo. He may also have been dealing drugs in the St Kilda area at the time. The man is now believed to be aged in his sixties or seventies. “We haven’t been able to identify a suspect or person of interest at this point,” Det Sen Const Mastroianni told reporters. “We’ve gone back over the original investigation notes, and spoken to the original informants. “We’ve identified one particular person of interest who was a taxi driver in the area at that time. “We’ve obtained a DNA sample from him and, unfortunately, it wasn’t him so we’re now appealing to the public to see if they have any other information as to who this male could be.” Nichala Barber and the rape victim weren’t known to each other, with Ms Barber having only recently moved to Melbourne from New South Wales at the time of her death. Det Sen Const Mastroianni said police had been unable to locate Ms Barber’s family since the case was reopened. “We believe at the time they resided in New South Wales and we have no information to suggest that they’ve moved but we’ve been unable to contact them so we’d love to appeal to them to come forward and speak to us,” she said. Anyone with information in relation to the assault is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential report to www. crimestoppers.com.au.

A MAN has been jailed for 21 years after murdering his estranged wife at her Noble Park home in 2013. Bona Lual, 37, pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing 31-year-old Suzi Oghia while their four children, aged two to 12, slept nearby. Supreme Court Judge Justice Terry Forrest told the court that Lual followed Ms Oghia for about a month before murdering her, threatening to kill her and any man she dated. He described Lual as “jealous and controlling“ and said Ms Oghia feared for her life before her murder, according to the ABC. In 2005 Ms Oghia and Lual moved to Australia from South Sudan. Justice Forrest took Lual’s difficult upbringing into account in the sentence. He said when Lual was 12, he and his mother were abused by rebels and his mother died weeks later.

Idle hands forge troubles for blacksmith Jack Johnson is the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street. SOMETIMES, when we had nothing to buy from the shops we wandered along the main street and looked in the shop windows. Or we would go and stand at the slip rails of the old blacksmith’s shop and farrier’s shed on the corner of Langhorne and Walker streets, which were next to the coach builders in Walker Street. We watched the smithy at his forge making the horseshoes and fitting them to the many types of horses from saddle and light harness to medium and heavy draughthorses. Draughthorses were used to pull the large four-wheeled delivery wagons around Dandenong to deliver beer to the hotels or to pull the tip drays of the council contractors.

ers and buggies had solid rubber tyres on their rims but they mostly appeared after sealed bitumen roads were introduced. At that time, the blacksmiths and their customers talked to us kids as they knew we were well-behaved and they probably knew Mum and Dad. I loved to watch the smaller forgings while still red hot, being dipped into a barrel of water to cool and harden. But they were suspicious of some of the big kids in town. More especially after an incident that happened when we were returning from concert practice at the old town hall. On the Walker Street wall of the farrier’s shed there was a window open-

JaCk looks

baCk JACK JOHNSON

We would then walk a little further along Langhorne Street to the section of the building nearest to the old Memorial Hall land, where the wheelwright had his shop and forge. We watched him making woodenspoked wheels and fitting steel rims to them. He made the lighter carriage wheels or the wheels of the spring carts which were the horse-drawn equivalent of today’s tradesman’s ute. Some of the better carriages, jink-

ing with a wooden door. It was there to create cross ventilation between the sliprail opening and around the farrier’s forge. In the summer months, when the forge was continually being pumped with the bellows or the smaller portable one was being wound by hand, the heat for the workers was intense. Because of his anti-social behaviour, one of the big kids was banned from the concert and from the town hall. This was what he had been aiming for as it left him free to roam the streets. He had a bunch of large crackers from Mr Ewart’s newsagency. Knowing this kid, he more than likely pinched them. As he walked past the opening, he

threw the crackers into the smouldering forge. By the time he got past the sliprails on the Langhorne Street corner, they had gone off in a series of loud explosions. This scared the hell out of the leather-aproned farrier, who had just turned his back on the forge, and caused the horse he had just shod to snap its halter and bolt in panic. It jumped the sliprail and headed up Walker Street. Just as the horse bolted, old Mr Handley was coming out the gate of his house and when he attempted to stop it he was nearly bowled over. The smithy got his own back playing a trick on the big kid, which saw him on his way with waterlogged hobnail boots.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 8 July 1915 Heliopolis Hospital Cairo FROM the military hospital at Heliopolis interesting letters are to hand from Nurse Millicent Miller, who has many friends in Dandenong and Archie’s Creek. Space does not permit the publication of details furnished in regard to Cairo, Alexandria and other sites visited in the striking provision made for the wounded. The hospital has space from 1000 beds (nearly three times the accommodation at the Melbourne hospital). And Later, she writes “our brave Australian lads are conveyed to hospital after having acquitted themselves in such a glorious manner at Gallipoli in upholding the prestige of the British Empire. Fighting against the best soldiers in the world, and beating them too. Their deeds of

heroism and dash in attack must make Australians feel proud of their countrymen in arms at the war”. From Nurse Miller’s letter an idea can be formed of the magnitude of the task so cheerfully carried out by the surgeons, nurses, stretcher bearers and all engaged in attending to the wounded men who have been in the firing line. It is good to read, also of the brave manner in which the Australian soldier conducts himself when stricken with his battle wound. 50 years ago 30 June 1965 Our Botanic Gardens Among World’s Best DID you know that the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne are recognised as among the finest gardens in the world? That they consist of 110 acres, 40 acres of which are lawn requiring two men all day,

and every day to keep them mown. That there are 16,000 varieties of trees and shrubs, and it requires two professional sign writers to keep up to date with new labels and the rewriting of old ones. In tracing the history of the gardens, Mr Pescott said in the original planning of 1842 by Robert Hoddle, surveyor for the layout of Melbourne a 50-acre site was selected..... 20 years ago 3 July 1995 $60,000 Rates ‘Mistake’ CONFUSION caused by a misprint on rate notices has led to the City of Greater Dandenong waiving $60,000 in interest. Notices sent to ratepayers mistakenly had 11 November this year, instead of 11 April, as the due date for rates. While the correct date was included in the accompanying letter, more than 3580 resi-

dents failed to make payment by 11 April and received final notices. They were given a new payment date - June 5.

5 years ago 28 June 2010 Angler With Net Fishes for Trouble A 30-year-old Noble Park man has been convicted and fined $4000 for illegally fishing with a homemade net last Christmas morning. Police arrested the man for fishing at Bonbeach. He later admitted that he had illegally used the net four times in about six months. A Department of Primary Industries fisheries officer said his department was concerned about an increase of illegal netting of Port Phillip Bay in the past six months. School card buying spree CHANDLER Park Primary School leaders’ spending of nearly $50,000 on their corporate credit cards in one year lacked “appropriate oversight”, an anti-corruption inquiry has heard. Principal Peter Paul and business manager Mary Hannett had racked up the bill in 2013 – almost half of which was recorded as “miscellaneous expenditure”, the Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission (IBAC) inquiry was told on Monday. Mr Paul told IBAC that most spending “would have been” online payments for items such as utility bills. “We do pay a lot of accounts on-line through credit cards.” He said his card was used for such items as food for children at school camps, staff “teambonding” cooking classes, topping up the school car’s petrol tank and meals out with Education Department officials. Ian Hill QC, counsel assisting IBAC, said a 15 June audit report criticised the practice of Mr Paul’s purchasing card transactions being approved by Ms Hannett as “high” risk. The audit recommended Mr Paul’s purchases should be instead checked by school council president Steve Barnett. Mr Paul told the inquiry

that both Mr Barnett and Ms Hannett, and two other staff members, had corporate credit cards. He had mistakenly thought Mr Barnett had always approved his card purchases. “Well, I thought they were, sir,” Mr Paul said when pressed on the issue. Under questioning at IBAC on Monday, Ms Hannett - who also has a school purchasing card – agreed that she was authorising Mr Paul’s purchases and he was authorising hers. Mr Hill asked her: “Did you not think it wise that someone independent authorise the expenditure or not?” “All the reports went to the school board anyway, Mr Hill,” Ms Hannett replied. At Monday’s hearing, Mr Paul admitted to deleting emails sent to and from disgraced Education Department director Nino Napoli, who was accused of running a $2.5 million fraud ring involving banker schools including Chandler Park. “I just wanted it out of my sight,” he said of one email. He said he’d been “totally humiliated” by some of Mr Napoli’s transactions. This month, Mr Napoli told the inquiry that Mr Paul was a good friend “and still is. I have a lot of principals that are good friends of mine”. On Monday, Mr Paul told

the hearing through a lawyer that he “categorically denies any wrongdoing” as far as doing “anything inappropriate with his own school funds or the selective employment of school staff”. The lawyer said Mr Paul was not aware at the time of disgraced, sacked Education Department official Nino Napoli’s “alleged activities”. “He did what he was instructed by a senior person who he trusted and respected. “Mr Paul received absolutely no personal benefit for operating as a banker school for Mr Napoli.” In April, Mr Paul and Silverton Primary School principal Tony Bryant were suspended pending Education Department investigations into the IBAC inquiry’s ongoing revelations. Both schools were known as banker schools and were used to hold Education Department funds to distribute to neighbouring schools as needed. Mr Paul had told the inquiry on 5 May that he had no knowledge of a “farrago of untruths” that involved using those funds to purchase wine, travel and other perks for department bureaucrats. Between 2007 and 2014, the school was invoiced for more than $150,000 for purchases from companies linked to Mr Napoli’s relatives. The inquiry continues.

Skates on for security By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

SECURITY around Noble Park’s skate park has been “ramped up” to deter adults and children from test-driving it prior to construction’s end. Greater Dandenong councillor Peter Brown said trespassing skaters had been spotted several times in recent weeks despite the skate park being effectively a building site.

On 21 June, security guards called in police to help them move-on a group but “people have been skating there since the concrete was set”. “You can’t blame the kids. You know what they are like - it’s like Christmas time.“ Cr Brown had himself been chastised by a council officer for recently entering the site unauthorised for a Journal photographic shoot to highlight his

safety concerns. He said after an independent audit, there would be minor works such as moving a sharp-edged fence further back from the skate park elements, and installing full perimeter fencing. Engineering services director Julie Reid told a council meeting on Monday that the trespassing had been a “concern” for several weeks. She said the council had

“ramped up” security to ensure skaters couldn’t access the site. “People are keen to get in there and give it a go.” The $1-million skate park’s performance bowl, snake run and street course designed by Noble Park skate legend Jon McGrath has been kennly anticipated. Commenters, expecting the park’s opening this month, had recently vented on the Journal’s website.

One comment-writer decried the “nanny state rubbish”, another wrote: “Bugger the security ... the park is completed I’m going skateboarding before your audit thank you.” A skaters’ online forum topic labelled ’Noble Park Safety Concerns’ features a number of posts including photos of skaters cutting moves on the performance bowl, as well as some critical memes of Cr Brown.

Choir is still singing out for new voices By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

Jeff Keyaerts reminiscing on the past 51 years of singing. 139776

HE’S only missed four rehearsals over 51 years. Dandenong resident Jeff Keyaerts has been singing in the Melbourne Male Choir for a good part of his 88 years and says age doesn’t bother him. “I’m as fit as a fiddle," he said. “I still go to water aerobics, still drive a car, cook, clean and sing - maybe that’s why I’m still so fit.” Mr Keyaerts has lived in Dandenong since 1959 and is the choir’s longest serving original founding member. He urges everyone to give singing a go, no matter their voice. “You don’t have to be Pavarotti to join,” he said. The Melbourne Male Choir is recruiting new

voices to bolster its sound and currently has about 20 members. However, Mr Keyaerts, who sings base, said that’s not enough. “We are all getting a bit old and are looking for new blood and we would like to bring out our own tapes again,” he said. Mr Keyaerts believes singing in a choir is a tremendous hobby for men. “I continue to go because I love singing and choir singing, I’ve made lifelong friends. “We are a very friendly mob, after practice we come together and have some cake,” he said. The Melbourne Male Choir was formed out of the Australian Dutch Male Choir, which itself was formed 25 years ago, and Mr Keyaerts said there

were not enough Dutch singers in the end so the name was changed. “There used to be 68 of us and we performed at the Sydney Opera House, we’ve been all over the country,” he said. The choir often perform around country Victoria. “You name it, we’ve been there,” he said. Mr Keyaerts said any local singers hitch a ride with him to the weekly rehearsals. “People that sing are happy people,” he said. No prior singing experience is required to join the choir and there is no formal or public audition for new members. To find out more information visit www.melbournemalechoir.com.au.

IN BRIEF Store fruit juice assault

A MAN was rushed to hospital after another man poured apple juice on him and assaulted him outside a Dandenong supermarket. The victim and his girlfriend were walking out of Coles on Princes Highway about 6.30pm on Friday 19 June when the offender threw the contents of his apple juice bottle onto the man and then hit him. The victim lost consciousness but regained it and was then taken to hospital where he was treated for facial injuries. Police are still looking for the attacker.

Crossings soil to be probed

PRE-DESIGN works have started on Noble Park’s level crossing removal projects. Geotechnical investigations started on the Heatherton, Chandler and Corrigan road crossings last week, along with six others on the Cranbourne- Pakenham line. The investigations will provide critical information about underground water and soil conditions that would inform design and construction.

Boss to stay By CASEY NEILL GREATER Dandenong CEO John Bennie has been given the green light to stay on when his contract ends in October. Councillor Maria Sampey last week moved to rescind plans to proceed with reappointing Mr Bennie, passed eight votes to three at the 9 June meeting. Her motion was lost seven votes to three. “I knew it was going to be lost,” Cr Sampey said. She said councillors knew Mr Bennie wanted to stay on only two weeks prior to voting on his future. They needed more time and facts to make an informed decision, she said - including Mr Bennie’s current pay packet.

“We’re just asking the question, what is he earning at present,” she said. “The other councillors don’t care. They just want to reappoint him.” The council’s 2015-’16 budget included $537,000 across two full-time positions in the chief executive’s department. “Next year is rate capping. Our council is socially disadvantaged. We have a majority of people who are unemployed,” Cr Sampey said. She said six of the 11 councillors didn’t participate in an independent review of Mr Bennie’s performance completed earlier this year. “It was done on the computer. We couldn’t access it,” she said.

“He’s got the results of only five councillors. “How accurate is it?” Crs Peter Brown and Matthew Kirwan supported Cr Sampey’s calls to take more time to assess Mr Bennie’s intentions, advertise the CEO position and “test the market”. But Mayor Sean O’Reilly said advertising the position would demonstrate a lack of confidence in the CEO. “Past history across the local government sector said the generally current CEO does not apply,” he said. “We would be in severe danger of losing our current CEO.” Cr O’Reilly described Mr Bennie as “competent, diligent, forward reaching and forward thinking”.

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS EMBATTLED MP Adem Somyurek has faced his first questions in parliament a month after the launch of an investigation into allegations that he had bullied his senior staffer. He has denied and labelled the formal complaint lodged by his chief-of-staff Dimity Paul as “completely baseless and untrue”. Mr Somyurek took most questions about the inquiry on notice, and gave written responses within 24 hours. He told parliament on Wednesday that he hadn’t been

instructed by anyone to miss the sitting week of 26-28 May just after he was stood down as a minister pending the investigation. “I cannot remember much from the conversation I had with the Premier but what I do know is this - I did not come to parliament on those days due to the reasons I outlined in my member’s statement (on 11 June). “And that was to be with my family at a very traumatic time and in order to deal with the review process.” Mr Somyurek was asked to elaborate on his comment

that “I think people are pretty smart”, made outside the House and in response to questions about the motivation behind the investigation. Speculation has swirled that the allegations and investigation were a Labor Party factional row. He told parliament that the question went to the “heart of the process” and he was required to “maintain confidentiality” regarding the inquiry. Tuesday’s questions included whether he offered his resignation or if it was sought by Premier Daniel Andrews.

A NEW take on pizza-with-the-lot made the menu in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court last week. A customer had helped himself to more than garlic bread on the side when he nabbed a $1000 iPhone 6 left on the counter near his own phone and then waited for his meal in his car. When the victim confronted him at the time he denied he’d taken the phone, but later confessed and returned the phone to police, putting it down to an act of drunken stupidity. The magistrate told the middle-aged man “you’re too old to be committing these sorts of offences”, convicted him and imposed a $600 fine.

“IT’S a bit like being asked to give an overview of the telephone book. It’s quite a long document.” This was corporate services director Mick Jaensch’s response to councillor Matthew Kirwan’s request at last week’s council meeting for a summary of the City of Greater Dandenong Long Term Financial Strategy. Mr Jaensch went on to say that the document spelled out where the council would be in five years and that rate capping was the biggest challenge ahead.

The State Government is still to reveal how rate capping will be applied.

COUNCILLOR Angela Long offered her congratulations and best wishes to Matthew Kirwan and his fiancee Jenny at last week’s council meeting. They’ll wed while she’s on holidays next month. Mayor Sean O’Reilly suggested the next speaker, Cr John Kelly, would surely also offer Cr Kirwan wishes for “productive and happy nuptials”. Chuckles erupted from the gallery, with many heard to question what he meant by “productive”.

THE council last week received an extra 104 signatures on a petition against selling part of Glendale Reserve in Springvale. These were in addition to a 21-signature document tabled at the 9 June meeting calling for the council to retain 75a Whitworth Avenue as public open space. In January it announced plans to sell it to Minaret College for $1.15 million to build a new kindergarten. The school leases a dilapidated kinder on the land but plans to end its tenure this year. Councillors will likely receive a report and vote on the proposal on 27 July.

Grants slam By CASEY NEILL

COUNCILLOR Maria Sampey delivered an extraordinary spray over grants and sponsorship at last Monday’s council meeting. She made abundantly clear her view that some groups had received too much funding and others too little through the Sponsorships Program and Community Support Grants Program. Particularly in her sights were the Chilean Latin American September Festival, the Dandenong Show and Noble Park Junior Football Club. Cr Sampey said the Chilean event represented 13 different countries and deserved the full $15,000 in support it requested. Instead it will receive $12,000 of the $132,550 in sponsorships distributed - including $20,000 to the Dandenong Show. “If we’re going to say that we’re multicultural, let’s have a balance,” Cr Sampey said. “You’re discriminating against these 13 countries. “We’re only talking about $3000. Let’s fund them. “If people could read what was being funded they would be horrified.” Cr Sampey said the three-day Lions Club Summer Community Festival held in Springvale South would receive $22,000 but didn’t have as many attendees as the Chilean festival. “I’ve got nothing against the Lions Club,” she

said. “I think they should be funded.” The Noble Park Junior Football Club will receive $1000 for three new AusKick centres and $1000 to start up the Noble Park Netball Club from the $141,580 in community support grants distributed. Cr Roz Blades said the applications had been through a thorough and rigorous process. “No two groups are the same. Each group contributes to the community,” she said. “It’s about the council working with the community and volunteers to produce the best event we can.” With Cr Matthew Kirwan absent from the chamber due to a conflict of interest and Cr Loi Truong an apology for the meeting, the motion passed eight votes to one. “We’ve certainly heard your views, loud and clear,” Mayor Sean O’Reilly said to Cr Sampey.

The man approached the 15-year-old victim at the Clarke Road bus stop and asked him for the time about 4.20pm on Monday 22 June. When the teen took out his phone, the man grabbed it. A confrontation ensued between the two, at which point the offender pulled up his shirt to reveal what appeared to be gun. The offender then fled with the phone but the victim later alleged the man’s gun was a fake.

Uplifting news awards TWO beautiful images captured by Journal photographers were awarded top prizes at the annual Community Newspapers of Australia awards. The southern division awards recognise community newspaper excellence in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. Stewart Chambers’ photograph, taken at Heritage Hill’s Illuminated Voices exhibition, won best feature photo. Judges said the photograph represented a “striking representation of a mother’s worries”. “I feel we are peering into her inner thoughts. This

is interesting and creatively done leaving a lot for the viewer to discover. It uplifts humanity in a way that makes us think.“ Rob Carew won best news photo for an image of a returned serviceman placing a poppy at the Noble Park cenotaph. “Love and devotion could well sum up this picture of a blind man placing a poppy at a suburban remembrance service while his seeing-eye dog stands at his side watching his every movement. “It is a really beautiful image.” Journal business writer Casey Neill picked up the award for best special publication for her coverage of

the Premier Regional Business Awards. Judges said the supplement took a “deep dive to really try and understand what makes the best businesses in the region tick”. Journal editor Narelle Coulter’s open letter to Prime Minister Tony Abbott won best editorial. The letter was published on the front page in August to launch the Journal’s Give Us a Hand campaign, which highlighted the need for more resources to support asylum seekers and refugees in Greater Dandenong. The awards were held on Friday 19 June at the River’s Edge function centre in Melbourne.

Court grants bail to mother over lack of burglary evidence A SPRINGVALE woman has been granted bail partly because of a lack of evidence over a burglary at her boyfriend’s exwife’s home. Police opposed the 33-yearold applicant’s bail at a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing on Monday 22 June because she had twice failed to appear in court on the theft and burglary charges. Detective Senior Constable Lara Murray of Greater Dande-

nong CIU told the court that the unemployed single mother - on a $150 a day heroin habit - and her Keysborough South boyfriend were co-accused for the alleged burglary in November 2013. The boyfriend had allegedly called the victim to bring their infant daughter to his house. When the victim left, the boyfriend allegedly drove to her unit, telling a neighbour he was there to deliver Christmas

presents. The neighbour also spotted a woman from behind, who was believed to be the applicant. The neighbour was unable to name the female intruder, describing her as having long, straight, black hair. The pair allegedly ransacked the unit taking credit cards, passports, mobile phones, handbags, $1000 cash from a money box and jewellery, including a diamond engagement

ring. Their loot was valued at $30,000, most of which has not been recovered, Det Sen Const Murray said. During a search of the applicant’s home, three of the victim’s missing handbags were allegedly found. The applicant denied that she owned a mobile phone found at her home and containing messages about selling handbags. She told a police interview that the boyfriend had brought

over the handbags for her, claiming they cost up to $5000 each, Det Sen Const Murray said. Victoria Legal Aid defence lawyer Adam Maloney said there was a “strong weakness” in the prosecution case for burglary and theft charges, rather than handling stolen goods. The applicant was not conclusively identified at the burglary and only three of the allegedly stolen items were seized

from her home, he argued. Her failure to appear in court was blamed on not being previously eligible for legal aid or being able to find a lawyer. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell granted bail given the applicant had lived at her home for many years and was a single mother of three. The applicant is required to report daily to Springvale Police Station up until a court contest mention on 28 July.

Career away from war By CASEY NEILL PETER Brown signed up for a part-time commerce course at university to avoid being sent to Vietnam. “I was eligible to be called up for National Service,” the Greater Dandenong councillor said. “If you were at university your deployment overseas would be held over until you finished your degree. “I took the view that I was going to be the oldest university student in Australia.” Cr Brown was working at a book publisher warehouse. “And one beautiful sunny day I was in the delivery truck and drove up the main entrance to Melbourne University to the Melbourne University book room,” he said. “I looked around me and saw all these good-looking young women. I saw them sitting around with their books talking to guys,” he said. “I thought ‘how can a person like me get amongst this life?’ “If you got a studentship from the State Government they’d pay you a living allowance. I could resign from work and become a full-time student. “I was rolled over into a fulltime course and paid a living allowance. “So that enabled me to complete my commerce degree and do my teacher training degree. “But the catch was, if you were on a studentship you had to teach for three years to work it off. “I took the view, ‘if I don’t like it, I’ll resign and they can chase me for the money’.” Last month Cr Brown notched up 45 years in teaching and received a certificate from

IN BRIEF Bail follows bomb scare

A 27-YEAR-OLD man was arrested after police rushed to a bomb scare in Doveton this month. The police Bomb Response Unit was called to the Ti-Tree Drive property just after 10.30am on Thursday 18 June where they conducted a safety search on a car and by 1.30pm said the area was safe. Police raided the property to arrest the man over an alleged stolen trailer, but when they arrived found what they mistakenly thought was a pipe bomb. After bomb squad investigations the report was deemed to be a false alarm. The man was still charged with handling stolen goods and was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court in August.

A horse he part-owns, Heysen, was first past the post in the Parkes Cup in New South Wales at the same moment he received the award. “It was certainly a memorable day,” he said. Cr Brown started his teaching career at North Altona High School in 1972, on one corner of Millers and McArthurs roads. “On the other corner was the

North Altona pub,” he said. “On a Friday afternoon it was common for the staff to go over to the North Altona pub and be at one table and the VCE students would be at another table. “I was sitting there with a couple of young teachers and they were asked for their proof of ID. “A couple of students who weren’t 18 – they were 17 – they weren’t asked for their ID because they looked older than the teachers. “I thought ‘this teaching is a

bit of fun’ – and it has been ever since.” Cr Brown was among the first to teach the VCE legal studies course when it was introduced about 1973. He’s also taught accounting and history and spent time in classrooms at Glen Eira College in Caulfield, Heatherhill in Springvale South – now the Keysborough College Banksia Campus – and the now-closed Coomoora College in Springvale South. “I think I teach the kids well.

I enjoy teaching them,” he said. “The reason I’ve stayed in the classroom for all of these years is the laughter and the happiness that surrounds me.” Cr Brown still teaches three and a half days a week. “I’ve been saying for the past few years that my retirement’s fast approaching,” he said. “I think that part-time teaching, with every Monday off and Wednesday sleep in, does take the pressure off and I think that’s contributed to my longevity.”

MP lobbies for school

A PETITION calling for a Keysborough South primary school made its way to State Parliament last Wednesday. Keysborough MP Martin Pakula on 24 June tabled the 1084-signature document asking the government to buy land for the school in its 2016-’17 budget. Petitioners want the school opened in the 2018 school year.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Future’s looking bright By CASEY NEILL TYRONE Landsman ran Future Metals Recycling from his car when the business first moved into Melbourne in 2008. The company’s managing director was working at a Hallam recycling facility when Tom Garrett and Stuart Miller bought Shepparton’s Fletcher Metals Recycling in 2005 and rebranded as Future. “Tom and I became good mates. I said ‘if you ever come to Melbourne I want to join you’,” Mr Landsman said. “So we started from scratch in Melbourne in 2008. At the start, I was basically working out of my car. “It was good fun.” In November 2008, they bought National Metals in Hallam, which they’ve retained to enable easy access for small or one-off customers. “So basically we doubled our business overnight,” Mr Landsman said. They set up headquarters in Ordish Road, Dandenong South, and now employ 47 people across the three sites. Future collects metal to sell to local smelters or export. “Recently, we’ve diversified a bit and we’re doing some transport op-

erations,” Mr Landsman said. “We’re doing some work with Visy recycling, where we’re doing their transport work for them. “We do the City of Whitehorse and the City of Moorabool. “So we collect the recycling bins and take them directly to Visy. “We also do some commercial work for them as well, where they’ve got the likes of Coles and some of the shopping centres with large cardboard collections.” Future is now building its presence in the utilities sector. “We’ve also brought on a specialist in that area,” Mr Landsman said. “We do the demolishing of the old transformers from power stations as well, but we’ve got an electrical engineer on board to manage that.” They’ve had to diversify to survive, Mr Landsman said. “Around this region, there are over 50 scrap yards. People open them on a regular basis,” he said. “They can open up a shed, they don’t really need a permit as such, and away they go. “They start buying scrap and they export it.”

New loans allow for business green fix BUSINESSES can tap into a new way to borrow money for green initiatives. Under new State Government legislation, lenders can provide finance to a building owner under an Environmental Upgrade Agreement (EUA) for upgrades to cut energy and water use and reduce waste. The local council then collects the repayments through its rates system and passes them onto the lender. Energy and Resources Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said building owners could pay back the loan while benefiting from the lower costs of a more resource-efficient building. If ownership or tenancy rights change, the new owners take up the loan and pay it through their rates. Ms D’Ambrosio said that without the system, businesses had a disincentive to invest in efficiency because they might move premises before paying off the loan. She said loans would also be more secure, encouraging lenders to offer more attractive loan terms. “Typically, many businesses face difficulty accessing finances for environmental upgrades,” she said. “This scheme will make it easier for businesses to obtain finance to improve their buildings, reduce waste and cut water use.”

Sylvain Janiszenski and Tyrone Landsman. 135479 Picture: GARY SISSONS But more than diversifying has kept Future going strong. “One thing that we really set ourselves on is that we have correct weight,” Mr Landsman said.

on.

“What we collect on is what we pay

“Where the others might pay - say they pay a lot more, then they’ll do some adjustments.

“The industry needs to be cleaned up, and I know the EPA, the police, and WorkCover are doing a blitz on a lot of facilities at the moment, which is the best thing that could happen. “We need a level playing field.” Future Metals is a second-tier recycler to the likes of Norstar, OneSteel and Sims. “We’re the level below the majors, and that’s where we want to be,” Mr Landsman said. “I don’t want to lose focus on our customers and I think they have. I think we have that edge over the majors. “Then the edge that we have over the minors is that we offer that professionalism that clients want from a major.” Future was a finalist for the CSR and Employment and Small Business categories at this year’s Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Premier Regional Business Awards. Mr Landsman is determined to stay at the top. “We are looking at more council contracts, delivering them in our own right,” he said. “We’re making sure we don’t have our eggs in one basket.”

Trams take to the tracks in CBD DA N D E N O N G - B U I LT trams hit new tracks in Melbourne last week. Bombardier’s E-Class trams started running on Route 11 between West Preston and Docklands, the first time they’ve ventured outside Route 96. The E-Class trams are 33 metres long and can carry more than 200 people Melbourne’s biggest trams. They have a low-floor design, wide doorways and dedicated spaces for wheelchairs, scooters and prams. Bombardier Transportation Australia managing director Rene Lalande said expanding the E-Class tram to Route 11 would enable more passengers to “enjoy the quality and comfort of the best tram ever built in, and for, Melbourne”. “At Bombardier, we are very pleased to see our locally made tram contribute

An E-Class tram in action. to improving mobility in our city,“ he said. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the former Labor State Government ordered 50 E-Class

trams from Bombardier and the new government this year ordered another 20. “They are the biggest, safest and most accessible trams on our network, and

more and more people will get to enjoy them over the coming years as they come off the production line in Dandenong and into service,” she said.

Works to ease up traffic

ROADWORKS on Abbotts Road in Dandenong South are set to cut congestion. Councillors at their 22 June meeting voted to award the $4 million work contract to duplicate Abbotts Road between Park Drive and Remington Drive to Cut and Fill. The project aims to benefit businesses by cutting traffic on Remington and Park drives and creating easier access to the estate. The project will include duplicating the Eumemmerring Creek Bridge on Abbotts Road, constructing Produce Drive between the existing court bowl and Abbotts Road, and lights at Produce Drive and Abbotts Road.

He’s no minor Miner By RUSSELL BENNETT BERWICK Miners’ club legend Mark Petana entered rarefied air over the weekend as just the sixth person in the history of the Gridiron Victoria competition to play 200 games. Petana - a linebacker - is also the Miners’ club president this year, as well as being its linebacker coach. His milestone game is made all the more remarkable given that a typical Gridiron Victoria season comprises of only about a dozen games. “Mark embodies what every coach wants from a player,” said Miners head coach and Gridiron Victoria state director of coaching, Mel Martin. “He’s courageous, provides great leadership, and has great ability. “He’s fierce on the field, but a true gentleman off it.” Martin has had a long association with the Miners and this year resumed his role as club head coach - a position that Petana, himself, held last season. Martin is a legend in Victorian gridiron, and when he talks glowingly about someone’s contribution to the sport his words tend to carry some weight. “He was a good enough player to go anywhere, but he’s a Miner for life,” he said of Petana. “He was one of the best players in the league at his position… once he gets on that field, he unleashes. “He plays every down as if it’s his first.” Martin remembers when Petana first arrived at the club.

“He just had the body, the strength and the speed to play the game,” he said. Now the president of the club, Petana lives and breathes the Miners. “After his family and his work, it’s the Miners… it’s as simple as that,” Martin said. The head coach said the draw of the club had long been its culture. “It creates a real brotherhood,” he said. “I know a lot of clubs say that, but the Miners live it.

A fever of Stingrays By JARROD POTTER A FLEET of Dandenong Stingrays’ under-16s will don the state colours in one of the club’s biggest seasons for representative duties. Hunter Clark, Oscar Clavarino, Aaron Darling, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Jake Frawley, Thomas Freeman, Angus Paterson and Jarrod Smith are part of the final 25-man squad to take on the rest of the country from 3 to 10 July on the Gold Coast. Dandenong Stingrays’ Operations and Development Assistant Peter Dye said having strong squads for both under-18 and under-16 has been especially promising this season as well as the talent coming from across the entire DandenongSouthern region. “Definitely good to be in such a strong position with the under 16 and 18s within Vic Country,” Dye said. “Those are quite a good group - you have some good years and not so good years, and we’ve got some especially good kids going through this year. “The (Mornington) Peninsula has always been a strong feeder ground for us, but to have players from each region competing in the carnival is great to see - with SEJ (South East Juniors) and FDJFL (Frankston and District Junior Football League) getting a few names in as well.” Dye highlighted the elite speed of DaviesUniacke, the hard-running midfielder/forward Darling, and tall-timber Paterson as some of the Stingrays to look out for in the weeklong carnival. It follows the success Dandenong had at the under-16 carnival, knocking over Gippsland and Bendigo - two particularly tough challenges in that age group. “We beat Gippsland - first time we’ve beat them for a few years, at least as long as I’ve been down at the Stingrays,” Dye said. “While we were beaten by Geelong, then we won pretty comfortable in the last game in Bendigo to have a good finish.”

Luke Davies-Uniacke is one Stingray set to star at the under-16 level for Vic Country. Picture: DANDENONG STINGRAYS The Vic Country under-16s start their campaign against Western Australia on Saturday at Carrara. While in under-18 news, Vic Country has clinched the national championship with one round to spare after an 11-point win over South Australia. The premiers just need to finish off the carnival with any result against Western Australia on Thursday afternoon to take their rightful trophy.

“Guys just stick to the club… they rarely even think about going anywhere else.” The Miners, currently sixth on the Division-1 ladder with two wins and four losses, will be moving heaven and earth to win their clash on Sunday (28 June - ending after the Journal went to press) with the Western Crusaders - a team they defeated 13-12 in week two of the season. The Endeavour Hills-based side has since suffered from a horrific run of injuries, but Martin said his team “still could have done a little better”. “Two of the games we lost we allowed stupid plays to occur because we just weren’t concentrating,” he said. “Losing our quarterback for virtually the whole season has caused serious complications because our backup is also our number-one wide receiver - but this week we’ll have our best avail-

able team on the park. “It’s a must-win game for us,” Martin said. “We’ve got the tiebreaker on them (the Crusaders) but they’re beating the teams we should have beaten ourselves. “We’ve got to take our opportunities - the finals are staring us in the face if we do.” Martin said the key to beating the Crusaders was finding a way to stop their major defensive playmaker, and playing a patient offensive game of their own. Petana is just the second player in Miners’ club history - behind only Dale Warren (on 222) to reach the 200-game mark. Berwick Miners took on the Western Crusaders on Sunday from 1.30pm at Henry Turner Reserve in Footscray, for end results go to the Journal website.

Dunn deal and it’s a steal By JARROD POTTER BEACONHILLS College student-athlete Oliver Dunn has a hectic baseball year ahead of him in pursuit of higher ambitions playing the great American pastime. While he’s represented the state before - playing with Baseball Victoria’s side over five years - Dunn, 16, from Endeavour Hills, has been selected for his first schoolboys’ team and will represent TeamVIC at the Pacific School Games later this year in Adelaide. “I’m very proud to be selected - I think it’s a good honour to be representing my state once again,” Dunn said. “First schoolboys’ tournament and it’s a good experience meeting new people and seeing what it’s like to play against people from New Zealand as well.” He’s a frequent flyer when it comes to his baseball ambitions - having travelled stateside to attend the Cal Ripken World Series and hopes to eventually get back overseas to play NCAA baseball. He’s also been picked to go to the MLB Australia Academy on the Gold Coast, a proving ground for up-and-coming Australian baseballers including Pakenham’s own MLBsigning Lachlan Madden. “It’s the first year I’m going up to the Gold Coast acad-

Oliver Dunn is moving towards the top of the Australian baseball landscape with his selection in two prestigious Picture: JARROD POTTER rosters. 140840 emy and the Australian team get picked out of that,” Dunn said. “I don’t want to say I’m going to make the team, but at the same time you don’t want to count yourself out of it. Dunn prefers to spend his time in the infield at second base or short-stop but is trying to expand his fielding game into the pitching ranks to give him more avenues into the final roster. “Just want to try my best to make that team - I think what

I want to focus on is broadening my game and being able to pitch so I can be picked for multiple positions - either as a pitcher or an infielder,” Dunn said. In the meantime Dunn will continue stealing bases and working on his pitching with Waverley Baseball Club, where he currently plays in the side’s firsts’ team. Dunn will represent SSV at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide from 22-28 November.

SPORT EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE - Round 11

Talent to spare and no Bull By JARROD POTTER NO Shane Valenti, Craig Anderson or Sam Monaghan. The owners of two Liston Trophies and a swag of Noble Park best and fairests sat in the stands as the Bulls clashed with the Kangaroos on a cold Saturday afternoon. What did it mean for the Bulls to lose decades of centre-square experience in one foul swoop though? In a show of strength - from the top to the bottom of the squad - Noble Park showed their absences are coverable in the 106-point demolition over East Ringwood. Valenti (sickness), Anderson (hamstring) and Monaghan (quad) comprise the main midfield rotation for Noble Park, but with the three powerhouses out of action all it did was give the next generation in the Bulls’ armoury a chance to shine. The forwards failed to capitalise on the strong midfield work of youngsters Josh Ferguson, Andrew Birt and Dylan Collis as the Bulls missed the mark with a two-goal-six first term though. Sitting 6.10 (46) at the main-break was not much better as the Bulls needed an earnest wakeup call. While the first half was a tentative display what will sooth a lot of sore spots was the 13goal barrage after the main-break as the Bulls managed to finally string together their chances. Shayne Allan (7 goals) added another bag to his 32 goals so far while Kyle Martin, Ziggie Alwan and Luke Mann (3 goals each) found some freedom and kicked truly. It made for a very happy birthday for first-year player Jake Gains and he copped the Gatorade shower alongside debutant Matthew Kelly. Noble Park coach Mick Fogarty was pleased his men worked through its wasted efforts in the first half to really ram home the positive outcome. “The second half was good obviously, the scoreboard indicates that, but I thought our ball use was better going inside-50, our lead ups were better and we had cleaner entries,” Fogarty said. “First half I think we played outside of our ability - probably doing some selfish things…

Luke Mann relished a rare chance in the seniors this season as he slotted three goals roaming centre half forward. 141071 against every opposition… we (need to) eliminate those and play the brand (of football) we know we’re capable of.” The coach praised his baby Bulls through the centre and thought their form - especially early in their senior careers - showed the strength of the club going forward. “When you’ve got the calibre of Monaghan - who won our last two best and fairests - and Shane Valenti, that speaks for itself… and our

skipper Craig Anderson out, that’s our three starting mids,” Fogarty said. “There’s some quality there and for the ability of the young guys to step in and fill that void, so to speak, is great for the future of the footy club.” While the Bulls sprayed 19 behinds, Fogarty said his side’s conversion is one of the best in the competition - owing to the barrage of goals they add in tandem.

“Behinds are every game - having said that we did the stats on all the teams in the comp and we sit second in regard to goal and behind ratio,” Fogarty said. “I thought we’d be sitting right down the bottom, but having said that we’re having a lot of shots and the more shots we have on goal, the more chance we’ve got of kicking them.” The second-placed Bulls travel to South Croydon this weekend.

JOCs back in fashion… just ask the Old Boys By JARROD POTTER VAFA DIVISION 2 - Round 11 RETURNING to their jocular best of the first eight rounds, St John’s brushed off its minor mid-year slump to comfortably best Melbourne High School Old Boys (MHSOB). Setting the stage for an emphatic 49-point win, the JOCs showed their back-to-back losses were a mere blip in its VAFA Division-2 campaign. Ben McGee’s charges opened the accounts with a six-goal first term as Anthony Brannan, Cameron Christiansen and Manny Jakwot helped up the tempo. Jakwot’s efforts through the centre were remission of Geelong’s emerging ruck/ ruck-rover Mark Blicavs and that dual-talent path is one the former Stingray could take in a onetwo combo with JOCS’ main ruckman Daniel Cattolico. Carson Strobel (3 goals) returned from suspension to star across halfforward and through the midfield while Glenn Costas (3 goals) and Cattolico (2 goals) also forced their way into the best with stellar efforts in the midfield and ruck respectively. After fighting back within 14 points at the main break, the visitors were left to St John’s mercy as the JOCs dictated the pace and cranked the speed to an extra level. Ending as they started, a six-goal term showed the rest of the competition the JOCs can bounce back after gut-wrenching losses and will be a prominent part of this year’s Division-2 finals’ series. Aaron Thornton (6 goals) had half-a-dozen to his name and leads the goal-kicking in Division 2 (53

SFL DIVISION 2 - Round 11 SHOWING there’s life yet in Division 2 beyond the top two, Keysborough was undone by Murrumbeena as the home side sent the Burra packing with an eight-point defeat. In a class back-and-forth game,

neither side could claim the upper hand. Hard fought through the dying minutes, Murrumbeena managed to kick a crucial last-term goal to stave off the Burra attack and take the 13.11 (89) to 12.9 (81) triumph. Tyson King (5 goals) was exceptional up forward while Will Gayfer, Tim Bacic and Geoff Humphreys all won their positions to feature in the best. Doveton Eagles (60-point loss) and Springvale Districts (98-point loss) were respectively brushed aside by Caulfield and ladder-leading Oakleigh District. LYNDALE was knocked over by Ashwood following a poor second half as Alex Kerr and Brenton Miles stood tallest. Endeavour Hills did enough to brush aside a gallant Dandenong in a 27-point win. Shane Peake (6 goals) and Chris Arnold (4 goals) were prolific for their respective sides while Neil Peake and Jake Van Hoesel were best afield for the Falcons. Hallam took it up to last year’s grand finalists Mt Waverley in a 22-point loss while Sandown had the bye.

Cougars limp home By JARROD POTTER BIG V - Round 14 THEY will take the win, but there’s plenty to improve on for the Keysborough Cougars after a 75-61 BIG V triumph over Pakenham. After opening strongly - hitting 47 by the main break - Keysborough applied the brakes as it couldn’t contain the Warriors’ output. While the rebound count remained promising, the Cougars were outworked through the second half by the winless, but extremely dogged, Warriors. Billie Lucas (26 points, 14 rebounds) got the job done at the free-throw line but will rue a 6/26 shooting effort for the night and the return across the board for the other Cougars was no better as only Keira Lee (9 points) and Ashleigh Wright (8 points) threatened to breach double digits. Despite clawing their way back into the match, reducing the margin to 10 through the third term, Pakenham’s young guards couldn’t muscle past the Cougars when it was needed most. Keysborough coach Craig Smethurst was pleased to take the points but thought the Cougars lacked resolve and they’ll need to work harder if they want to beat better teams. “It’s been an up-and-down season and I think that game probably showed it, where we’re probably relying on talent a bit rather than

CLOSE but no cigar for Dandenong Thunder conceding a 1-2 defeat to Melbourne Knights in a closely fought Saturday night battle. The Thunder was desperate for any points - in an attempt to move out of the relegation zone - but couldn’t stop the early advance of the Knights. James McGarry (30’) headed in the Knights’ first and Stipo Andrijasevic (44’) cleanly hit his penalty to extend the margin to two by the half. Brodie Paterson rattled off the shot of the night - cannoning a long-range shot through the Knights’ defence to halve the lead at the 51-minute mark. But there was nothing the Thunder could do to add the equaliser. Thunder heads west on Friday night to face former skipper Shane Rexhepi and his FFA Cupheaded Hume City from 8.30pm. Dandenong City competed one of the upsets of the season, knocking over ladder leaders Melbourne City 5-0. All the usual suspects - Keegan Ziada, Sean Seavill, Shaun Filipovic and Andy Jerez booted goals to turn Victory into defeat in one scintillating away display at JL Murphy Reserve. Springvale White Eagles drew with Box Hill United 1-1. City travels to face Melbourne City on Saturday while Springvale host Bendigo City.

By JARROD POTTER IN A Victorian Rugby League nail-biter the South Eastern Titans were just knocked over by regional rival Casey 36-42. The Titans opened the account early through Fine Tuivai as Casey fumbled the first series of the high-calibre VRL bout. Victorian representatives Paula and Melvin Fifita smashed through the Warriors’ backs and made a number of elite tackles while Alberto Aoese and Robert Tusani played their part in the rolling maul to halt Casey’s advance. Casey was able to eke out the slender six-point win and keep their minor premiership aspirations alive while the Titans men sit fourth on the ladder and travel on 11 July to face Northern Thunder.

hard work,” Smethurst said. “Full credit to Pakky, they’ve had a tough year but definitely outworked us in the end. “I think it was talent that got us over the line, which is definitely not what we want to rely on, and that’s what has cost us a number of games this year.” Keysborough women improve their record to 5-7 and now head down to the road to face archrivals Casey on Saturday evening from 8pm. In a heated conflict against Craigieburn the Cougars’ men also took the points, but it was a 59-57 nail-biter. After the 2012 BIG V grand-final series, taken by Craigieburn, the side Faced former Keysy point guard Eric Miraflores. But Keysborough managed to contain the Filipino livewire and fire back with starring efforts from Ben Morwood (14 points) and Malcolm Heard (10 points, 11 rebounds). The Cougars’ men host Collingwood on Saturday night from 8pm. Pipped in a potential championship preview, Dandenong didn’t have the firepower to get the job done down in Tasmania. With many predicting the Tornadoes versus Rangers to be a strong indication for the SEABL championship, the Rangers were edged out by the home side’s longrange game. Launceston drilled 11 threes to Dandenong’s four, which proved the difference in the 69-77 loss.

IT WAS yet another good night of racing at Sandown Park on Thursday evening, especially for trainer Darryl Connor. Connor’s Beyond Rapid took out the first of the night in impressive fashion winning in 29.78. Just two races later Connor’s second runner, Blingified, completed the winning double at odds of $24.10. The doggy duo is the only racing greyhounds in Connor’s Cranbourne kennel, underlining his achievement. Dyna Yemen continued the Dailly kennel’s hot run of form when he took out the first leg of the quaddie. Dyna Yemen uncharacteristically sprung out of box one and didn’t look back, going on to win by nine

lengths in a best-of-night 29.17. Young star Yadi recorded his eighth win on the trot and first over 595m. The Kel Greenough prepared speedster found himself midfield down the back straight, however powered home to claim an impressive win. Litter brothers It’s A Blast and It’s A Plane went head to head in the Add us on Snapchat Novice final. It’s A Blast prevailed by two lengths from the fast finishing It’s A Plane in a fast 34.12. The pair already boast an impressive resume having only recently turned two-years-old, and trainer Wayne Vassallo will no doubt contemplate nominating them for the Group 2 McKenna Memorial. Heats of the McKenna Memorial will be held on Thursday eve-
