A HOMELESS man who lives in his car faces losing his licence after his careless driving caused another vehicle to spin out of control. In court, Leon Gecevic pleaded guilty but said he had no recollection of striking the victim’s vehicle from behind in the inbound right-lane of the Monash Freeway. The magistrate questioned why Gecevic, who was suffering from chronic post-accident pain, still even had a licence. The victim and two friends were spun in their vehicle just before the Hallam Road exit about 12.20am on 15 February. Their vehicle rebounded off median strip wires across the freeway and came to rest on an embankment on the left side. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Joshua Diemar told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that Gecevic blamed an object that “flipped up” and cracked his windscreen. The victim said Gecevic at the time was “spacy”, didn’t make sense or know
what was happening, Sen Const Diemar said. At an interview with Narre Warren police, Gecevic couldn’t recall driving, the collision or any reason for careless driving. Gecevic’s lawyer, armed with a psychological report on the accused, said there was no suggestion that drugs were involved. Gecevic was currently claiming a TAC supplement for permanent injuries incurred in an accident two years ago and was on “significant” medication for his chronic pain. His lawyer pleaded for the magistrate not to cancel the accused’s licence because he lives in his car. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell ordered the lawyer to ask VicRoads to assess if Gecevic was suitable to drive. “It has always concerned me when someone comes in and says they were not capable of driving on the day. “He’s got no prior history but given the needs raised in the (psychological) report, there should be an assessment on his ability to drive.” Gecevic was convicted and fined $600.

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A WOMAN defrauded a Bunnings store using discarded receipts that she collected in the store’s car park. Suzanne Marie Wilson, 45, of Pakenham was on bail when she selected $420 worth of items including paint and rat poison from the Cranbourne store shelves on 4 April, a court was told. At the store’s return desk, Wilson - having not paid for the items - then asked for a refund for the items using the thrown-away receipts. After receiving the cash, Wilson soon returned and was caught shoplifting $43 of decorative petals.
In the car park, police discovered six receipts from Narre Warren and Pakenham Bunnings stores as well as $118 of items without a receipt. Police also found a washing line and jewellery believed to be stolen at Wilson’s house. Senior Constable Joshua Diemar told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday 22 June that Wilson admitted to searching the car park for receipts. She told police she intended to use the receipts found in her car to deceive other Bunnings stores, but claimed the items seized at her house had been hers for a long time.
Wilson also made full admissions to theft and unlicensed driving for a petrol drive-off from an Officer service station in August. She had covered the first and last digits of her car’s number plates with duct tape before driving-off with $7.35 of petrol in the tank. She also pleaded guilty to stealing $60 of paracetamol and nappies from an Emerald supermarket, and $200 of jewellery from a Target store in Pakenham last year. Defence lawyer Siva Kandasamy said the single mother of three was on prescribed methadone and antidepressants. Her grandchild lives with her and
she does not receive child support, the court heard. Most of the stolen goods had been recovered, he said. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell was concerned that some of the offending was “quite thought-out and deliberate”. She also took into account Wilson’s prior history, which included a jail term for disqualified driving and theft in 2011. Wilson was convicted and placed on a 12-month community corrections order. She was ordered to do 80 hours of unpaid work and to undergo drug and mental health treatment.
Saved DNA samples link 1980s crimes A BREAKTHROUGH in DNA research has led police to link an unsolved rape in Dandenong to a suspicious cold case death in Caulfield - more than 25 years after both crimes. Detective Senior Constable Jess Mastroianni from the Cold Case Missing Person Squad called on the public on Friday to help solve the rape at Baden Powell Drive, Dandenong, in 1988, and the suspicious death of a woman in Caulfield in 1989. DNA was retained from both crimes in the hope that new technology would eventually lead to a breakthrough in the investigation. Now a review of cold cases, starting in 2012, has resulted in a potential link between the two. The sexual assault occurred in the early hours of Monday 15 August 1989. Police have been told a then 21-year-old woman was out in St Kilda with a male friend the night before when they hailed a taxi in Fitzroy Street and headed to Mandate night club in Barkly Street. The fare came to $10, however the taxi driver told them not to worry about paying. Sometime later around 2am on Monday, the woman
Detectives at the scene after a body was found in a Caulfield street in 1989. Twenty five years later, police have been able to link the death to an assault in Dandenong seven months before. and her friend went to Timmy’s Cafe on Fitzroy Street, where they saw the same taxi driver. He bought the pair coffees and offered to drive them home as he’d finished his shift and said he was also going to Noble Park, where the woman lived. The taxi driver was now using a different car, believed to be a dark blue Holden Kingswood or similar. He dropped off the male friend in Doveton before telling the woman he would take her to her home in Noble Park. But instead he drove to the police paddocks in
Baden Powell Drive, Dandenong, where he raped her before dropping her outside the South Eastern Hospital. She reported the attack to police the next day. The driver at the time was described as European or Lebanese, in his midthirties, 160 centimetres tall, with a heavy build and a big stomach, and had short black and grey hair. It’s believed he had an accent but spoke English well, and was often seen at Timmy’s cafe. Seven months later, on 21 March 1989, police investigated a suspicious death in Caulfield. The body of 21-year-old
Nichala Barber was found on Malakoff Street about 6.30am. Detectives, who said her body was dumped from a car, retained DNA from the scene but no suspects were ever identified. Police believe the man implicated in both incidents may be named Khalid but may have used the names Carl or Carlo. He may also have been dealing drugs in the St Kilda area at the time. The man is now believed to be aged in his sixties or seventies. “We haven’t been able to identify a suspect or person of interest at this point,” Det Sen Const Mastroianni told reporters.
“We’ve gone back over the original investigation notes, and spoken to the original informants. “We’ve identified one particular person of interest who was a taxi driver in the area at that time. “We’ve obtained a DNA sample from him and, unfortunately, it wasn’t him so we’re now appealing to the public to see if they have any other information as to who this male could be.” Nichala Barber and the rape victim weren’t known to each other, with Ms Barber having only recently moved to Melbourne from New South Wales at the time of her death. Det Sen Const Mastroianni said police had been unable to locate Ms Barber’s family since the case was reopened. “We believe at the time they resided in New South Wales and we have no information to suggest that they’ve moved but we’ve been unable to contact them so we’d love to appeal to them to come forward and speak to us,” she said. Anyone with information in relation to the assault is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential report to www.crimestoppers. com.au.
A 27-YEAR-OLD man was arrested after police rushed to a bomb scare in Doveton this month. The police Bomb Response Unit was called to the Ti-Tree Drive property just after 10.30am on Thursday 18 June where they conducted a safety search on a car and by 1.30pm deemed the area safe. Police raided the property to arrest the Doveton man in relation to an alleged stolen trailer, but when they arrived found what they thought was a pipe bomb. After bomb squad investigations the report was deemed a false alarm. The man was still charged with handling stolen goods and was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court in August.
Boy grabbed for backpack POLICE are looking for a man who grabbed at a 10-year-old boy in Noble Park as he walked home from school. The boy was walking along Jacksons Road about 3.30pm on Monday 22 June when the man grabbed him by the arm and took his backpack. The offender made no demands but ran off with the backpack. The boy returned to school where he told a teacher about the incident and it was reported to police. The backpack was later found in the front yard of a nearby property. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Idle hands forge troubles for blacksmith JACK JOHNSON IS THE AUTHOR OF WHEN THE CLOCK STRIKES, A FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF GROWING UP IN DANDENONG, HIS YEARS TENDING TO THE CITY’S PIPES AND DRAINS AS A PLUMBER AND BRINGING UP A FAMILY WITH WIFE FRANCES IN THEIR BELOVED HOME IN MACPHERSON STREET. SOMETIMES, when we had nothing to buy from the shops we wandered along the main street and looked in the shop windows. Or we would go and stand at the slip rails of the old blacksmith’s shop and farrier’s shed on the corner of Langhorne and Walker streets, which were next to the coach builders in Walker Street. We watched the smithy at his forge making the horseshoes and fitting them to the many types of horses from saddle and light harness to medium and heavy draughthorses. Draughthorses were used to pull the large four-wheeled delivery wagons around Dandenong to deliver beer to the hotels or to pull the tip drays of the council contractors.
ers and buggies had solid rubber tyres on their rims but they mostly appeared after sealed bitumen roads were introduced. At that time, the blacksmiths and their customers talked to us kids as they knew we were well-behaved and they probably knew Mum and Dad. I loved to watch the smaller forgings while still red hot, being dipped into a barrel of water to cool and harden. But they were suspicious of some of the big kids in town. More especially after an incident that happened when we were returning from concert practice at the old town hall. On the Walker Street wall of the farrier’s shed there was a window open-

BACK JACK JOHNSON
We would then walk a little further along Langhorne Street to the section of the building nearest to the old Memorial Hall land, where the wheelwright had his shop and forge. We watched him making woodenspoked wheels and fitting steel rims to them. He made the lighter carriage wheels or the wheels of the spring carts which were the horse-drawn equivalent of today’s tradesman’s ute. Some of the better carriages, jink-
ing with a wooden door. It was there to create cross ventilation between the sliprail opening and around the farrier’s forge. In the summer months, when the forge was continually being pumped with the bellows or the smaller portable one was being wound by hand, the heat for the workers was intense. Because of his anti-social behaviour, one of the big kids was banned from the concert and from the town hall. This was what he had been aiming for as it left him free to roam the streets. He had a bunch of large crackers from Mr Ewart’s newsagency. Knowing this kid, he more than likely pinched them. As he walked past the opening, he
threw the crackers into the smouldering forge. By the time he got past the sliprails on the Langhorne Street corner, they had gone off in a series of loud explosions. This scared the hell out of the leather-aproned farrier, who had just turned his back on the forge, and caused the horse he had just shod to snap its halter and bolt in panic. It jumped the sliprail and headed up Walker Street. Just as the horse bolted, old Mr Handley was coming out the gate of his house and when he attempted to stop it he was nearly bowled over. The smithy got his own back playing a trick on the big kid, which saw him on his way with waterlogged hobnail boots.
LOOKING BACK heroism and dash in attack must make Australians feel proud of their countrymen in arms at the war”. From Nurse Miller’s letter an idea can be formed of the magnitude of the task so cheerfully carried out by the surgeons, nurses, stretcher bearers and all engaged in attending to the wounded men who have been in the firing line. It is good to read, also of the brave manner in which the Australian soldier conducts himself when stricken with his battle wound.
100 years ago 8 July 1915 Heliopolis Hospital Cairo FROM the military hospital at Heliopolis interesting letters are to hand from Nurse Millicent Miller, who has many friends in Dandenong and Archie’s Creek. Space does not permit the publication of details furnished in regard to Cairo, Alexandria and other sites visited in the striking provision made for the wounded. The hospital has space from 1000 beds (nearly three times the accommodation at the Melbourne hospital). And Later, she writes “our brave Australian lads are conveyed to hospital after having acquitted themselves in such a glorious manner at Gallipoli in upholding the prestige of the British Empire. Fighting against the best soldiers in the world, and beating them too. Their deeds of

and every day to keep them mown. That there are 16,000 varieties of trees and shrubs, and it requires two professional sign writers to keep up to date with new labels and the rewriting of old ones. Notices sent to ratepayers mistakenly had 11 November this year, instead of 11 April, as the due date for rates. While the correct date was included in the accompanying letter, more than 3580 resi-
dents failed to make payment by 11 April and received final notices. They were given a new payment date - June 5. 5 years ago 28 June 2010 Angler With Net Fishes for Trouble A 30-year-old Noble Park man has been convicted and fined $4000 for illegally fishing with a homemade net last Christmas morning. Police arrested the man for fishing at Bonbeach. He later admitted that he had illegally used the net four times in about six months. A Department of Primary Industries fisheries officer said his department was concerned about an increase of illegal netting of Port Phillip Bay in the past six months. Minister’s ‘no’ to violence By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A NEW family violence campaign seeking to raise awareness in local schools was launched in Berwick this month, the day after damning statistics revealed Casey had the highest number of reported family violence incidents in the state. Family Violence Prevention Minister Fiona Richardson joined Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley at Kambrya College to launch the Say NO to Family Violence campaign on Friday 19 June where students were informed of the harrowing family violence figures in Casey for the last year, according to the latest Crime Statistics Agency report. “Tragically, in the City of Casey, we see the highest recorded number of family violence incidents of any local government area - 3759 incidents of family violence were recorded just in the last 12 months in the City of Casey,” Ms Richardson told the room. “That’s nearly 4000 families torn apart by violence, just here in your local community, and just over the last 12 months.” Ms Graley, who presented Kambrya principal Michael Muscat with a special book at the launch, plans to roll out the campaign across many Casey schools and community organisations. “We thought a little bit about where we should start, and we thought schools are great because the kids are all there and so in many ways it’s an easy start but it’s an appropriate beginning as well,” Ms Graley said. Emphasising why a family violence campaign for schools was so important, Ms Richardson said statistics had also revealed 1200 children in Casey had witnessed family violence in the past year. “And I understand the impact of

Indeed, it appears the children from Kambrya have already been talking to their teachers and peers about the issue. As part of the new campaign, the Kambrya students have been encouraged to create banners, promoting the initiative, and in the process have discussed the issue regularly with art teacher Deborah Russo, who at the launch admitted she had not known the extent of the damning Casey statistics. “I was unaware going into my classroom but became aware as I was talking to children about family violence,” she said. “With questions about what happens in the future and how do you
to deal with in the classroom. “But then the students got their head around it, we listened to a few performing artists, their music ... on a website with people who had been exposed to family violence as young people. “Then the students went about making their own drawings, then we collaboratively looked around at all the work that we’d done. “People chose what they liked, what they thought was powerful. “It’s created a conversation that now has actually put me closer to the group of students that I’m dealing with.” For more information, visit www. facebook.com/saynotofamilyviolenceinnarrewarrensouth .
family violence on children, I am one of those, now adults, whose life was impacted by family violence in a very significant way,” Ms Richardson said. “And can I say to those children, or young adults, who are here that may be impacted, it’s important to speak out. “It’s important to speak to your colleagues, it’s important to speak to your friends, it’s important to speak to your school leaders and your teachers about what you’re experiencing because they can help you. “You’re not alone, you’re not isolated, there are people that do care about you and do want to help. “It’s important that you take that step.”

State play dough for kinders
A HALLAM design studio is in the running for top housing awards. Graham Jones Design’s home Emerald is a nominee for a residential design award in the new houses valued at $300,000 to $500,000 category at the Victorian Building Design Awards (BDAV). The design is named after its location, which inspired its appearance. The firm’s project Mt Martha, located in Mount Martha, is also nominated in the residential design category for new houses valued at $500,000 to $1 million. Graham Jones is also in the running for the People’s Choice Award, which allows Victorians to choose their favourite design project. The Building Design Awards celebrate Victoria’s best building designers across heritage conservation and residential, interior, energy efficient and non-residential design. Tracey Johnson from Graham Jones Design said conceptual design for Emerald started in late 2011 and a young family had been living in the home for a year. “It was what most builders would see as a difficult sloping site, which was why it was a custom design,” she said. Access to the home is via a sweeping driveway that guides guests through a timber gate, and the site is nestled among the trees and next to the Puffing Billy train line. Ms Johnson said the family asked for an understated, low maintenance home that complemented the environment and fitted in with the vegetation on the site. It is predominantly Colorbond and timber and is split into two divided pavilions separated by the entry - the living and parent zone and the kids zone, garage and storage. Graham Jones Design has won more than 80 awards over the past 25 years and will learn the fate of its Emerald design at the BDAV annual dinner on Saturday 25 July. People’s Choice Award voting is now open at www.bdav.org.au and closes Monday 13 July.
K I N D E R G A RT E N S in Hallam and Endeavour Hills will be among many to benefit from a State Government funding boost announced last week. Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said several eligible kindergartens across the City of Casey would receive extra funding under a package worth up to $83.7 million, which was announced by Premier Daniel Andrews on Monday 22 June. Hallam, James Cook, Allara, Oatlands, and Timbarra kindergartens will be among those facilities to receive the extra funding. Mr Donnellan said improved staff-to-child ratios will take effect at the start of next year. Under the new ratio, kinders will provide one educator per 11 children. The current ratio is one educator per 15 children. The new ratios form part of the Government’s National Quality Framework. The new funding is in addition to the $50 million provided by the Victorian Government in the 2015-'16 Victorian budget to build and upgrade new and existing kinders.

Urban sprawl threats By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE rapidly-advancing urban sprawl is tipping the ecological and economic balance in the UNESCO-branded Western Port Biosphere, the region’s foundation has reported. Western Port Biosphere Foundation’s chairman Duncan Malcolm last week unveiled its first “pilot” report card since the biosphere reserve was designated in 2002 for its “exceptional ecological values on the fringe of an expanding city”. He stated in the report that the region had been a “focus of significant expansion” of the urban growth boundary. The subsequent loss of farmland was creating “pressures” on traditional agriculture and could change the “economic balance” as well as biodiversity, Mr Duncan wrote. “With the loss of arable land to housing within the biosphere, we are losing valuable food production capacity on the fringe of ... the huge metropolitan Melbourne population centre.” Mr Malcolm also warned of the impacts of substantial dredging if the proposed Port of Hastings expansion went ahead.
The region, which covers the land, air and water surrounding Western Port, French and Phillip islands, recently passed UNESCO’s 10-year review. It comprises parts of Casey, Cardinia, Frankston, Bass Coast councils and the entire Mornington Peninsula shire. Each of the member councils had plans to reduce carbon emissions such as renewable energy for council buildings and energy-efficient street lighting, the report card stated. At the report card launch, Mr Malcolm said the next report would look closely at how many biosphere residents worked close to home. In Casey just 24 per cent of biosphere residents worked within the area; in Cardinia that figure was 29 per cent. Mr Malcolm posed the question: what would be the impact if an extra 10 per cent of residents worked in the biosphere? “Whilst recognising and valuing the differences and individuality of each council ... there are values common to everyone,” Mr Malcolm said. “We have an opportunity to work together as a region to protect and conserve, while also fostering a vibrant economy and a rich social fabric.”

Anti-drugs funding set to put the heat on ice By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A NARRE Warren community centre is set to receive $1 million in State Government funding to tackle the spread of ice. On Friday Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan confirmed Connections UnitingCare in Webb Street will receive $1 million over four years to run rehabilitation programs, as part of the Andrews Government’s $45.5 million Ice Action Plan.
The programs, to be hosted at Connections Narre Warren and organised by drug treatment organisation UnitingCare ReGen, will be funded as part of a $24.6 million package to expand treatment services, support families and strengthen communities across Victoria. The Casey and Cardinia regions will also benefit from $200,000 given to health service EACH to expand drug support, as well as $1.48 million over four years to fund a state-wide family
drug education program. “Different people need different kinds of drug treatment,” Mr Donnellan said. “What is important is to engage the local community of Narre Warren and surrounds so that, together, we can come up with local solutions for local problems with the assistance of the Victorian Government.” Earlier this year a forum was convened at the Casey Council offices where representatives from sporting clubs through-

out the municipality gathered together to workshop an official drug policy for their respective clubs. National Policy manager for the Australian Drug Foundation Geoff Munro was a guest speaker at the event and urged people to create a policy as a way of prevention. He said sporting clubs provided a protective environment, with local coaches often acting as a mentor to those they were in charge of.
Builders line up for arts centre FOUR contractors have been shortlisted to construct the City of Casey’s new arts, civic and cultural precinct. The $125 million Bunjil Place will be built by either Brookfield Multiplex, Leighton Contractors, Lend Lease or Probuild. Expressions of interest closed last month. The chosen contractor is expected to be appointed before Christmas. “Council is confident that it could partner with any one of the shortlisted contractors to successfully deliver the iconic building,” Casey Mayor Mick Morland said. “From here, the shortlist will participate in a two-stage tender process which has been developed to ensure that best value for money is achieved for the project. “The successful contractor will then work collaboratively with council, project architect, FrancisJones Morehen Thorp (fjmt) and the specialist consultant team to ensure that Bunjil Place is a visually stunning and fully functional building for the community.” For more information on the new cultural centre, visit www.bunjilplace. com.au.

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE inaugural RASRA awards recently held in Dandenong could be given a national platform, Friends of Refugees chief executive Sri Samy said. The Refugee and Asylum Seekers Recognition Awards night on 20 June packed out the Urban Neighbours of Hope hall and attracted a quality field of nominees from the local suburbs despite being convened in barely a month, Ms Samy said. “There were so many happy smiles around,” she said. “People were so happy to be recognised for their contributions.” Ms Samy said many in the crowd were moved by the sto-
ries of the winners, their “sacrifice” and epic journeys. She believes the RASRAs are the only Australia-based awards for refugees and asylum seekers’ contributions in the community. “These people give back. “They are not here for economic reasons but fleeing from persecution and saving their own lives - and they are not here to live off the government.” Next year, organisers will seek a Melbourne CBD venue and invite nominations from across Australia, paying to fly in any interstate finalists. Winners at this month’s awards include seven-day-aweek Friends of Refugees vol-
unteer Donstan Pillai, Victoria’s first Afghan refugee state election candidate John Gulzari and Free Burma cafe founder Mas Mai. The other winners were Aran Mylvaganam (outstanding leader), Helen Sheikhan (community service), Shahin Shafaei (art award), Emmanuel Ndayisaba (academic excellence), Khan Hazara (business), Toma Erjon (all-abilities sport), Habib Manavi (youth achievement), and Yaser Zomorodi and Hussain Ahmadi for sports achievements. Real Australians Say Welcome artist Peter Drew and Sister Brigid of the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project were guest speakers.

Creative youth SOME of Casey’s most creative and artistic young people were recognised at the 2015 Casey Creations Youth Arts Competition awards ceremony on 11 June. The council announced the winners of the six categories, presented a number of merit and encouragement awards and acknowledged all the wonderful entries received as part of the annual arts and photography competition. City of Casey Mayor Mick
Morland said the calibre and number of entries received this year was a great reflection of the artistic talent on offer in Casey. “This is the 14th anniversary of the competition and it is an important part of council’s commitment to celebrating the amazing talents of young people from across the municipality. “Council has received more than 3100 artworks as part of this competition since it was introduced. “This year’s judges were once
again overwhelmed by the quality and diversity of the 400 submissions, which was the highest number of entries council’s ever had for this competition. “The number of entries just confirms how strong our arts community is and how lucky we are to showcase the incredible talents of our young people. “I’d like to congratulate each one of the entrants for their efforts, their willingness to participate and for sharing their artistic vision with us,“ Cr Morland said.

LJ Hooker Hampton Park Proudly donating to local schools & sporting clubs Staff from LJ Hooker Hampton Park visited a number of local schools recently to give back to the community which has given them so much. The LJ Hooker Hampton Park staff visited Rivergum Primary school, Hampton Park Secondary College & St Kevin’s Primary School to deliver further cheques to each school. Director John Deo said it was their way of giving back. “We decided to donate to schools as we wanted to give back to our community as the community has been good to us over the years and we thought the best way would be to help out the local schools.” he said. “With the money we have said to the schools that we want them to use the money to help the kids and their education, but they can use the money where they see it as it helps the schools as they don’t get enough funding every year. “The whole sales team at LJ Hooker Hampton Park have contributed to this fabulous donation, our goal is to help the schools in anyway we can. “We have so far donated a total of $19,000.00 and hope it helps the schools and kids.” LJ Hooker Hampton Park also donate to and are sponsoring the Hampton Park Football / Netball club and the Narre South Lions junior football club.

NEW HOMES & LAND
LOTS WITH PRIME POSITIONING THE unprecedented popularity of Villawood Properties’ new Delaray community in Clyde North has meant fast tracking the launch of its new precinct. Prospective residents can now secure their place in the exclusive Corazon precinct. The 22 lots in the precinct have prime positioning to what will be the community’s beating heart, the exclusive residents’ club. Corazon precinct residents will literally have the club, parkland and community garden at the doorstep of their dream home. Villawood Properties executive director
Tony Johnson said the popularity of Delaray since its launch in late April had left the developer with no choice but to bring forward the release of the Corazon stage. “Since we launched, people have really warmed to what Delaray has to offer and this popularity has meant that we’ve had to fast track our stage releases,” he said “The exclusive residents' club has really resonated, with many of those who have bought in Delaray to date, citing it as a key factor. Of course, those who buy in the Corazon precinct will be right in the beating heart of this exciting new community with the club literally across the street. “The club is proving a drawcard, not just for its amazing facilities, but because of the sense of community that
it generates. We’ve witnessed a similar effect in our other communities which come with residents’ clubs. It forms a hub where people can meet, make new friends and enjoy the lifestyle on offer. “Our buyers are discerning. They want a quality home, but they want more than that. Delaray - and the Corazon precinct in particular - is a perfect example. It delivers a sense of community. We create facilities
and spaces that encourage people out into their environment. “At Delaray we are breaking new ground in luxury and amenity, with quality homes, facilities and open spaces.” For inquiries, contact Nabil Harb at the Delaray Sales office on 9684 8128 or visit delaray.villawoodproperties.com.au

Uplifting news awards TWO beautiful images captured by Journal photographers were awarded top prizes at the annual Community Newspapers of Australia awards. The southern division awards recognise community newspaper excellence in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. Stewart Chambers’ photograph, taken at Heritage Hill’s Illuminated Voices exhibition, won best feature photo. Judges said the photograph represented a “striking representation of a mother’s worries“. “I feel we are peering into her inner thoughts. This is interesting and creatively done leaving a lot for the viewer to discover. It uplifts humanity in a way that makes us think.” Rob Carew won best news photo for an image of a returned serviceman placing a poppy at the Noble Park cenotaph. “Love and devotion could well sum up this picture of a blind man
placing a poppy at a suburban remembrance service while his seeing-eye dog stands at his side watching his every movement. “It is a really beautiful image.” Journal business writer Casey Neill picked up the award for best special publication for her coverage of the Premier Regional Business Awards. Judges said the supplement took a “deep dive to really try and understand what makes the best businesses in the region tick”. Journal editor Narelle Coulter’s open letter to Prime Minister Tony Abbott won best editorial. The letter was published on the front page in August to launch the Journal’s Give Us a Hand campaign, which highlighted the need for more resources to support asylum seekers and refugees in Greater Dandenong. The awards were held on Friday 19 June at the River’s Edge function centre in Melbourne.

No trouble brewing here, say cops, just a friendly get together By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A NEW police initiative encouraging the community to meet their local police officers is coming to Endeavour Hills. The Coffee with a Cop program, originally from the US, will launch at Endeavour Hills Shopping Centre this Thursday and will allow Casey residents to come and have a cuppa with their local cops and discuss any topic. Acting Senior Sergeant Jen McK-
enna is helping co-ordinate the program. “It personalises it, it gives them the opportunity to meet people,” she said. “There’s no agendas, no forums, it’s whatever the community wants to discuss. “I think with policing you go job to job, and a lot of those jobs aren’t always meeting people in good circumstances so police members don’t get an opportunity to meet people in
an informal way, it’s generally when people need us. “This gives people the chance to meet us in an informal setting.” Coffee with a Cop was started in Hawthorne, California, in 2011 after members of the local police department looked into ways they could interact better with their community. In less than two years Coffee with a Cop events have been hosted in more than 2000 communities
across 48 states. Victoria Police has since looked abroad to see how what community projects they could draw on to improve community relations. Sen Sgt McKenna said the Coffee with a Cop initiative would be run in Casey monthly, with the hope of taking it to other suburbs after the Endeavour Hills trial. “It’s absolutely something Victoria Police will be watching to see how it’s
received in the community,” she said. “Of course if it takes off here (Endeavour Hills), it’s something we could easily spread.” The first Coffee with a Cop session will be held this Thursday, 2 July, from 10am to noon at the Endeavour Hills Police Station. To get involved with the program, or for more information, contact Sen Sgt McKenna at Endeavour Hills Police Station on 9709 7666.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Breakfast time at Bernie’s By GARRY HOWE RETAIL veteran Bernie Brooks did not have to look past the front door of his home for an example of what he described as the ‘digital disruption’ of his world. The former Myer Limited CEO told a big crowd at Wednesday morning’s Casey Cardinia Business Breakfast at the Cardinia Cultural Centre of the arguments that ensued when his son started buying goods online. His appeals to support the business that supported the family largely fell on deaf ears and it wasn’t until a few of the ordered items didn’t fit that the household mail traffic eased. Mr Brooks said his son now combined online shopping with an in-store experience and his message was that businesses prepared to exist in both environments would successfully negotiate the digital disruption. He said it was critical that businesses were prepared to morph into an omni-channel. Loosely defined, that is a multichannel approach to sales that provides customers with a seamless shopping experience, whether it’s from a desktop, a mobile phone or in the store. He used Barnes and Noble Book-
shops in the US as an example. In an environment of declining book sales, they developed their own book reader. Mr Brooks said the retail world had evolved from the days of the old shopkeeper who knew you and your family, to the self-service innovation, then the introduction of scanning and through to the impacts of the “worldwide web”. He said shoppers were now living by the click - they wanted it now. “The customer is now in control,” he said. “They won’t wait in line.” Mr Brooks said customers liked the idea of being rewarded for their loyalty and had ever increasing expectations around service. He said a lot of shoppers did their research online, but that at the moment most still purchased from stores. Many still considered shopping a day out and looking at ways to enhance that experience was important. Mr Brooks said initial issues of mistrust around online sharing of financial information were turning around and more and more purchases would be made online. He said it was the businesses prepared to offer an integration of online and in-store opportunities that would do the best.
Pitching in Future’s with ideas
He advised to innovate and warned not to leave it until the downturn to do so. “The lure of comfort stifles the de-
sire to innovate,” he warned. “The best time to do it is when things are going well.” He said the quality of the people
you had and the speed at which you did things were critical to success and that it was important to be consumer-led in what you did.

YOUNG entrepreneurs can pitch their best business ideas for a chance to make them a reality. Casey Cardinia Region group has invited 15 to 21-yearolds to share an idea that could change the world. Four successful applicants will take part in a shark tankstyle event at a Tech-Innovation and Entrepreneurship Expo on Saturday 15 August at Chisholm Institute Berwick Campus at 25 Kangan Drive, Berwick . They’ll face local entrepreneurs who are eager to help them reach their goals. The finalists and a winner will receive publicity and mentoring from event sponsors. Entrepreneurs need to submit a written application and have the option of adding a three to five minute video of their idea. Applications close on 24 July. Visit metabiz.com.au/blog/ shark-tank for more information.

TYRONE Landsman ran Future Metals Recycling from his car when the business first moved into Melbourne in 2008. The company’s managing director was working at a Hallam recycling facility when Tom Garrett and Stuart Miller bought Shepparton’s Fletcher Metals Recycling in 2005 and rebranded as Future. “Tom and I became good mates. I said ‘If you ever come to Melbourne I want to join you’,” Mr Landsman said. “So we started from scratch in Melbourne in 2008. At the start, I was basically working out of my car. “It was good fun.” In November 2008, they bought National Metals in Hallam, which they’ve retained to enable easy access for small or one-off customers. “So basically we doubled our business overnight,” Mr Landsman said. They set up headquarters in Ordish Road, Dandenong South, and now employ 47 people across the three sites.
Future collects metal to sell to local smelters or export. “Recently, we’ve diversified a bit and we’re doing some transport operations,” Mr Landsman said. “We’re doing some work with Visy recycling, where we’re doing their transport work for them. “We do the City of Whitehorse and the City of Moorabool. “So we collect the recycling bins and take them directly to Visy. “We also do some commercial work for them as well, where they’ve got the likes of Coles and some of the shopping centres with large cardboard collections.” Future is now building its presence in the utilities sector. “We’ve also brought on a specialist in that area,” Mr Landsman said. “We do the demolishing of the old transformers from power stations as well, but we’ve got an electrical engineer on board to manage that.” They’ve had to diversify to survive, Mr Landsman said.
Sylvain Janiszenski and Tyrone Landsman. 135479 Picture: GARY SISSONS “Around this region, there are over 50 scrap yards. People open them on a regular basis,” he said. “They can open up a shed, they don’t really need a permit as such, and away they go. “They start buying scrap and they export it.” But more than diversifying has kept Future going strong.
“One thing that we really set ourselves on is that we have correct weight,” Mr Landsman said. “What we collect on is what we pay on. “Where the others might pay - say they pay a lot more, then they’ll do some adjustments. “The industry needs to be cleaned up, and I know the EPA, the police, and WorkCover are
doing a blitz on a lot of facilities at the moment, which is the best thing that could happen. “We need a level playing field.” Future Metals is a secondtier recycler to the likes of Norstar, OneSteel and Sims. “We’re the level below the majors, and that’s where we want to be,” Mr Landsman said. “I don’t want to lose focus on our customers and I think they have. I think we have that edge over the majors. “Then the edge that we have over the minors is that we offer that professionalism that clients want from a major.” Future was a finalist for the CSR and Employment and Small Business categories at this year’s Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Premier Regional Business Awards. Mr Landsman is determined to stay at the top. “We are looking at more council contracts, delivering them in our own right,” he said. “We’re making sure we don’t have our eggs in one basket.”

SPORT
He’s no minor Miner By RUSSELL BENNETT BERWICK Miners’ club legend Mark Petana entered rarefied air over the weekend as just the sixth person in the history of the Gridiron Victoria competition to play 200 games. Petana - a linebacker - is also the Miners’ club president this year, as well as being its linebacker coach. His milestone game is made all the more remarkable given that a typical Gridiron Victoria season comprises of only about a dozen games. “Mark embodies what every coach wants from a player,” said Miners head coach and Gridiron Victoria state director of coaching, Mel Martin. “He’s courageous, provides great leadership, and has great ability. “He’s fierce on the field, but a true gentleman off it.” Martin has had a long association with the Miners and this year resumed his role as club head coach - a position that Petana, himself, held last season. Martin is a legend in Victorian gridiron, and when he talks glowingly about someone’s contribution to the sport his words tend to carry some weight. “He was a good enough player to go anywhere, but he’s a Miner for life,” he said of Petana. “He was one of the best players in the league at his position… once he gets on that field, he unleashes. “He plays every down as if it’s his first.” Martin remembers when Petana first arrived at the club.

“He just had the body, the strength and the speed to play the game,” he said. Now the president of the club, Petana lives and breathes the Miners. “After his family and his work, it’s the Miners… it’s as simple as that,” Martin said. The head coach said the draw of the club had long been its culture. “It creates a real brotherhood,” he said. “I know a lot of clubs say that, but the Miners live it.

able team on the park. “It’s a must-win game for us,” Martin said. “We’ve got the tiebreaker on them (the Crusaders) but they’re beating the teams we should have beaten ourselves. “We’ve got to take our opportunities - the finals are staring us in the face if we do.” Martin said the key to beating the Crusaders was finding a way to stop their major defensive playmaker, and playing a patient offensive game of their own. Petana is just the second player in Miners’ club history - behind only Dale Warren (on 222) to reach the 200-game mark. Berwick Miners took on the Western Crusaders on Sunday from 1.30pm at Henry Turner Reserve in Footscray, for end results go to the Journal website.
Dunn deal and it’s a steal By JARROD POTTER
By JARROD POTTER A FLEET of Dandenong Stingrays’ under-16s will don the state colours in one of the club’s biggest seasons for representative duties. Hunter Clark, Oscar Clavarino, Aaron Darling, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Jake Frawley, Thomas Freeman, Angus Paterson and Jarrod Smith are part of the final 25-man squad to take on the rest of the country from 3 to 10 July on the Gold Coast. Dandenong Stingrays’ Operations and Development Assistant Peter Dye said having strong squads for both under-18 and under-16 has been especially promising this season as well as the talent coming from across the entire DandenongSouthern region. “Definitely good to be in such a strong position with the under 16 and 18s within Vic Country,” Dye said. “Those are quite a good group - you have some good years and not so good years, and we’ve got some especially good kids going through this year. “The (Mornington) Peninsula has always been a strong feeder ground for us, but to have players from each region competing in the carnival is great to see - with SEJ (South East Juniors) and FDJFL (Frankston and District Junior Football League) getting a few names in as well.” Dye highlighted the elite speed of DaviesUniacke, the hard-running midfielder/forward Darling, and tall-timber Paterson as some of the Stingrays to look out for in the weeklong carnival. It follows the success Dandenong had at the under-16 carnival, knocking over Gippsland and Bendigo - two particularly tough challenges in that age group. “We beat Gippsland - first time we’ve beat them for a few years, at least as long as I’ve been down at the Stingrays,” Dye said. “While we were beaten by Geelong, then we won pretty comfortable in the last game in Bendigo to have a good finish.”
“Guys just stick to the club… they rarely even think about going anywhere else.” The Miners, currently sixth on the Division-1 ladder with two wins and four losses, will be moving heaven and earth to win their clash on Sunday (28 June - ending after the Journal went to press) with the Western Crusaders - a team they defeated 13-12 in week two of the season. The Endeavour Hills-based side has since suffered from a horrific run of injuries, but Martin said his team “still could have done a little better”. “Two of the games we lost we allowed stupid plays to occur because we just weren’t concentrating,” he said. “Losing our quarterback for virtually the whole season has caused serious complications because our backup is also our number-one wide receiver - but this week we’ll have our best avail-

While in under-18 news, Vic Country has clinched the national championship with one round to spare after an 11-point win over South Australia. The premiers just need to finish off the carnival with any result against Western Australia on Thursday afternoon to take their rightful trophy.
BEACONHILLS College student-athlete Oliver Dunn has a hectic baseball year ahead of him in pursuit of higher ambitions playing the great American pastime. While he’s represented the state before - playing with Baseball Victoria’s side over five years - Dunn, 16, from Endeavour Hills, has been selected for his first schoolboys’ team and will represent TeamVIC at the Pacific School Games later this year in Adelaide. “I’m very proud to be selected - I think it’s a good honour to be representing my state once again,” Dunn said. “First schoolboys’ tournament and it’s a good experience meeting new people and seeing what it’s like to play against people from New Zealand as well.” He’s a frequent flyer when it comes to his baseball ambitions - having travelled stateside to attend the Cal Ripken World Series and hopes to eventually get back overseas to play NCAA baseball. He’s also been picked to go to the MLB Australia Academy on the Gold Coast, a proving ground for up-and-coming Australian baseballers including Pakenham’s own MLBsigning Lachlan Madden. “It’s the first year I’m going up to the Gold Coast acad-

Dunn prefers to spend his time in the infield at second base or short-stop but is trying to expand his fielding game into the pitching ranks to give him more avenues into the final roster. “Just want to try my best to make that team - I think what
I want to focus on is broadening my game and being able to pitch so I can be picked for multiple positions - either as a pitcher or an infielder,” Dunn said. In the meantime Dunn will continue stealing bases and working on his pitching with Waverley Baseball Club, where he currently plays in the side’s firsts’ team. Dunn will represent SSV at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide from 22-28 November.

SPORT EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE - Round 11
Talent to spare and no Bull By JARROD POTTER NO Shane Valenti, Craig Anderson or Sam Monaghan. The owners of two Liston Trophies and a swag of Noble Park best and fairests sat in the stands as the Bulls clashed with the Kangaroos on a cold Saturday afternoon. What did it mean for the Bulls to lose decades of centre-square experience in one foul swoop though? In a show of strength - from the top to the bottom of the squad - Noble Park showed their absences are coverable in the 106-point demolition over East Ringwood. Valenti (sickness), Anderson (hamstring) and Monaghan (quad) comprise the main midfield rotation for Noble Park, but with the three powerhouses out of action all it did was give the next generation in the Bulls’ armoury a chance to shine. The forwards failed to capitalise on the strong midfield work of youngsters Josh Ferguson, Andrew Birt and Dylan Collis as the Bulls missed the mark with a two-goal-six first term though. Sitting 6.10 (46) at the main-break was not much better as the Bulls needed an earnest wakeup call. While the first half was a tentative display what will sooth a lot of sore spots was the 13goal barrage after the main-break as the Bulls managed to finally string together their chances. Shayne Allan (7 goals) added another bag to his 32 goals so far while Kyle Martin, Ziggie Alwan and Luke Mann (3 goals each) found some freedom and kicked truly. It made for a very happy birthday for first-year player Jake Gains and he copped the Gatorade shower alongside debutant Matthew Kelly. Noble Park coach Mick Fogarty was pleased his men worked through its wasted efforts in the first half to really ram home the positive outcome. “The second half was good obviously, the scoreboard indicates that, but I thought our ball use was better going inside-50, our lead ups were better and we had cleaner entries,” Fogarty said. “First half I think we played outside of our ability - probably doing some selfish things…
Luke Mann relished a rare chance in the seniors this season as he slotted three goals roaming centre half forward. 141071 against every opposition… we (need to) eliminate those and play the brand (of football) we know we’re capable of.” The coach praised his baby Bulls through the centre and thought their form - especially early in their senior careers - showed the strength of the club going forward. “When you’ve got the calibre of Monaghan - who won our last two best and fairests - and Shane Valenti, that speaks for itself… and our

skipper Craig Anderson out, that’s our three starting mids,” Fogarty said. “There’s some quality there and for the ability of the young guys to step in and fill that void, so to speak, is great for the future of the footy club.” While the Bulls sprayed 19 behinds, Fogarty said his side’s conversion is one of the best in the competition - owing to the barrage of goals they add in tandem.
JOCs back in fashion… just ask the Old Boys By JARROD POTTER VAFA DIVISION 2 - Round 11 RETURNING to their jocular best of the first eight rounds, St John’s brushed off its minor mid-year slump to comfortably best Melbourne High School Old Boys (MHSOB). Setting the stage for an emphatic 49-point win, the JOCs showed their back-to-back losses were a mere blip in its VAFA Division-2 campaign. Ben McGee’s charges opened the accounts with a six-goal first term as Anthony Brannan, Cameron Christiansen and Manny Jakwot helped up the tempo. Jakwot’s efforts through the centre were remission of Geelong’s emerging ruck/ ruck-rover Mark Blicavs and that dual-talent path is one the former Stingray could take in a onetwo combo with JOCS’ main ruckman Daniel Cattolico. Carson Strobel (3 goals) returned from suspension to star across halfforward and through the midfield while Glenn Costas (3 goals) and Cattolico (2 goals) also forced their way into the best with stellar efforts in the midfield and ruck respectively. After fighting back within 14 points at the main break, the visitors were left to St John’s mercy as the JOCs dictated the pace and cranked the speed to an extra level. Ending as they started, a six-goal term showed the rest of the competition the JOCs can bounce back after gut-wrenching losses and will be a prominent part of this year’s Division-2 finals’ series. Aaron Thornton (6 goals) had half-a-dozen to his name and leads the goal-kicking in Division 2 (53

VAFA DIVISION 4 THERE was no fun left over for Division 4 as Masala was pumped by Mt Lilydale 6.3 (39) to 31.20 (206).
SFL DIVISION 2 - Round 11 SHOWING there’s life yet in Division 2 beyond the top two, Keysborough was undone by Murrumbeena as the home side sent the Burra packing with an eight-point defeat. In a class back-and-forth game,
neither side could claim the upper hand. Hard fought through the dying minutes, Murrumbeena managed to kick a crucial last-term goal to stave off the Burra attack and take the 13.11 (89) to 12.9 (81) triumph. Tyson King (5 goals) was exceptional up forward while Will Gayfer, Tim Bacic and Geoff Humphreys all won their positions to feature in the best. Doveton Eagles (60-point loss) and Springvale Districts (98-point loss) were respectively brushed aside by Caulfield and ladder-leading Oakleigh District. Keysborough heads to Hampton this week while Springvale Dis-

SFL DIVISION 3 LYNDALE was knocked over by Ashwood following a poor second half as Alex Kerr and Brenton Miles stood tallest. Endeavour Hills did enough to brush aside a gallant Dandenong in a 27-point win. Shane Peake (6 goals) and Chris Arnold (4 goals) were prolific for their respective sides while Neil Peake and Jake Van Hoesel were best afield for the Falcons. Hallam took it up to last year’s grand finalists Mt Waverley in a 22-point loss while Sandown had the bye.
“Behinds are every game - having said that we did the stats on all the teams in the comp and we sit second in regard to goal and behind ratio,” Fogarty said. “I thought we’d be sitting right down the bottom, but having said that we’re having a lot of shots and the more shots we have on goal, the more chance we’ve got of kicking them.” The second-placed Bulls travel to South Croydon this weekend.

Cougars limp home
A Titan for Casey By JARROD POTTER VRL FIRST GRADE - Round 10
By JARROD POTTER BIG V - Round 14 THEY will take the win, but there’s plenty to improve on for the Keysborough Cougars after a 75-61 BIG V triumph over Pakenham. After opening strongly - hitting 47 by the main break - Keysborough applied the brakes as it couldn’t contain the Warriors’ output. While the rebound count remained promising, the Cougars were outworked through the second half by the winless, but extremely dogged, Warriors. Billie Lucas (26 points, 14 rebounds) got the job done at the free-throw line but will rue a 6/26 shooting effort for the night and the return across the board for the other Cougars was no better as only Keira Lee (9 points) and Ashleigh Wright (8 points) threatened to breach double digits. Despite clawing their way back into the match, reducing the margin to 10 through the third term, Pakenham’s young guards couldn’t muscle past the Cougars when it was needed most. Keysborough coach Craig Smethurst was pleased to take the points but thought the Cougars lacked resolve and they’ll need to work harder if they want to beat better teams. “It’s been an up-and-down season and I think that game probably showed it, where we’re probably relying on talent a bit rather than
IN A nail-biter the South Eastern Titans were knocked over by regional rival Casey 36-42. The Titans opened the account early through Fine Tuivai as Casey fumbled the first series of the high-calibre VRL bout. Victorian representatives Paula and Melvin Fifita smashed through the Warriors’ backs and made a number of elite tackles while Alberto Aoese and Robert Tusani played their part in the rolling maul to halt Casey’s advance. Casey was able to eke out the slender sixpoint win and keep their minor premiership aspirations alive while the Titans men sit fourth on the ladder and travel on 11 July to face Northern Thunder.
hard work,” Smethurst said. “Full credit to Pakky, they’ve had a tough year but definitely outworked us in the end. “I think it was talent that got us over the line, which is definitely not what we want to rely on, and that’s what has cost us a number of games this year.” Keysborough women improve their record to 5-7 and now head down to the road to face archrivals Casey on Saturday evening from 8pm. In a heated conflict against Craigieburn the Cougars’ men also took the points, but it was a 59-57 nail-biter. After the 2012 BIG V grand-final series, taken by Craigieburn, the side Faced former Keysy point guard Eric Miraflores. But Keysborough managed to contain the Filipino livewire and fire back with starring efforts from Ben Morwood (14 points) and Malcolm Heard (10 points, 11 rebounds). The Cougars’ men host Collingwood on Saturday night from 8pm.

SEABL PIPPED in a potential championship preview, Dandenong didn’t have the firepower to get the job done down in Tasmania. With many predicting the Tornadoes versus Rangers to be a strong indication for the SEABL championship, the Rangers were edged out by the home side’s longrange game. Launceston drilled 11 threes to Dandenong’s four, which proved the difference in the 69-77 loss.

Two out of two... ain’t no more By JASON ADAMS IT WAS yet another good night of racing at Sandown Park on Thursday evening, especially for trainer Darryl Connor. Connor’s Beyond Rapid took out the first of the night in impressive fashion winning in 29.78. Just two races later Connor’s second runner, Blingified, completed the winning double at odds of $24.10. The doggy duo is the only racing greyhounds in Connor’s Cranbourne kennel, underlining his achievement. Dyna Yemen continued the Dailly kennel’s hot run of form when he took out the first leg of the quaddie. Dyna Yemen uncharacteristically sprung out of box one and didn’t look back, going on to win by nine
lengths in a best-of-night 29.17. Young star Yadi recorded his eighth win on the trot and first over 595m. The Kel Greenough prepared speedster found himself midfield down the back straight, however powered home to claim an impressive win. Litter brothers It’s A Blast and It’s A Plane went head to head in the Add us on Snapchat Novice final. It’s A Blast prevailed by two lengths from the fast finishing It’s A Plane in a fast 34.12. The pair already boast an impressive resume having only recently turned two-years-old, and trainer Wayne Vassallo will no doubt contemplate nominating them for the Group 2 McKenna Memorial. Heats of the McKenna Memorial will be held on Thursday eve-

WITH the upcoming departure of the Ford Falcon the latest, fourth generation, version of the marginally smaller Mondeo, launched in Australia in April this year, takes on more importance than ever before. When Mondeo first arrived on the scene in 1992 it was marketed as the “world car” - hence the name, its French for world. Despite its success overseas, the dominance of the Falcon in Australia, and the fact that it didn’t come here until 1995, meant that Mondeo was never going to be more than a bit player. Bucking the current trend towards SUVs all Mondeo models are available with a station wagon body as well as a hatchback, but no sedan and no plans to bring one in post-Falcon. The Titanium wagon is diesel-only powered, the others come with the choice of either petrol or diesel. The only option is prestige paint, at $450, with all models. Mondeo hatch has the same coupe-like styling that Mercedes pioneered with its CLS-Class. It works well with the Benz and equally so with the big Ford - at a third of the price. The Mondeo wagon gets a similar treatment. The front of the Gen 4 Mondeo was been given a bigger grille than the previous model, with a honeycomb fill and daytime running lights that combine with the flowing profile to produce an eye-catching sporty looking car. Each variant gets different sized alloy wheels from 16 to 18-inch. Mondeo comes with the choice of two turbocharged engines, one petrol and one diesel. All models use a six-speed automatic transmission with the added feature of paddle-shift manual overrides. There are excellent storage options including

a large and deep alcove at the base of the front console that is ideal for keeping items like phone and wallet away from prying eyes. The drink holders are large and supportive while the USB, Aux and SD card sockets are at the bottom of the centre console box. The Mondeo’s hatch door is huge and opens wide to provide easy access to the 557 litres of storage space, or 1600 litres with the rear seatbacks folded. The size of the hatch door means shorter people may struggle to reach up and pull it closed. The problem is avoided in the Titanium courtesy of a powered door which opens via a smartkey button and closes by pressing a button at the bottom of the hatch door. All models now come with inflatable seatbelts on the two outer rear seats that combine the benefits of a normal seatbelt with those of an airbag. All models also get seven conventional airbags including a driver’s knee ‘bag; ABS brakes; Electronic Stability Control; Trailer Sway Control; Hill Launch Assist; rear parking sensors; and Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection. Mondeo Trend models add Lane Departure Warning; Driver Impairment Monitor; and a reversing camera. The flagship Titanium also gets powered steering wheel adjustment; LED headlights and daytime running lights; blind spot monitoring and park Enhanced Active Park Assist which aids with both parallel and perpendicular parking. Mondeo uses the Ford SYNC2 system displayed on an eight-inch colour touch screen to control the various infotainment features including satellite navigation which is standard across the range. There’s a fair bit of learning involved in SYNC2, which can be frustrating for the occasional driver but owners should adapt quickly and get the maximum benefit from its many advanced features. Our first impression was of a car with a solid feel to the body, usually a good omen for a long life.
