for economic development and encouraging increased visitation, which is what we all want to see.” The Dixons Creek tower will cover the Steels Creek area, and both towers will provide Telstra 4G mobile internet services. The combined cost of the Dixons Creek and East Warburton towers is $1.16 million, and the State Government is funding $21 million to the $86 million Victorian leg of the project. and I’m sure that we’ll certainly be making sure carriers are fully aware of that.” Yarra Ranges Council’s Director of Social and Economic Development, Ali Wastie, said the new tower would help residents in emergencies, and also help visitors to the area by making tourism more accessible. “We were so pleased to hear the announcement yesterday, not just from a bushfire perspective in terms of safety – although that was a key driver - but also, these regions are key tourist activity sites,” she said. “Having mobile coverage is just essential

When asked if bushfire risk and safety would help to determine the priority for the tower rollout, Mr Fletcher said the matter was “in the hands” of Telstra and Vodafone. “We will be encouraging them to have regard to safety priorities as a factor,” he said. “That being said ... every location nationally will get a safety benefit from having coverage, with road accidents, farm accidents and, of course, natural disaster response. “But, nevertheless, clearly Victoria and this area in particular had a truly terrible experience

A MOBILE phone black spot in Steels Creek will be eliminated with the construction of a new phone base station and tower, announced by the government last week. On Thursday, 25 June, the Federal Government announced 109 new mobile phone base stations and towers would be built across the state to address coverage black spots. Two of these towers are set to be built in the Yarra Ranges, with one based in Dixons Creek close to Steels Creek and another in East Warburton as part of the three-year project. In a visit to the Steels Creek Community Centre to talk about the announcement, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Communications, Paul Fletcher, said the Mobile Black Spot Program was designed for areas at risk of natural disaster. “When we took the policy to the election, it talked about areas that are prone to natural disaster,” he said. “Obviously, we were thinking then about the terrible experience of Black Saturday and the impact of communication networks and being able to call for help.” Members of the Steels Creek Association gathered at the centre for Mr Fletcher’s visit with Casey MP Tony Smith. President, Stephanie Giffard, said the announcement would “alleviate a lot of angst in the community.” “Especially in the warmer months, it’s paramount, obviously, for well-being and safety - I think it will alleviate a lot of that concern,” she said. Steels Creek was devastated by the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009, which killed 173 people state-wide, and the area is not currently serviced by any mobile phone network. In his speech, Mr Fletcher noted that the council, Mr Smith and the community had all campaigned heavily for a new tower to be established. “The importance of community advocacy really cannot be overstated in this program, and the amount of work I know you’ve done here in Steels Creek to make the case has been really, really important,” he said. The council, with the support of Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley and Mr Smith, had applied under the program for Steels Creek and East Warburton to receive service.

Grand donation for school YARRA Glen students will receive extra numeracy programs, thanks to community generosity, after a donation from the local pub earlier this month. On 9 June, Yarra Glen Grand Hotel owner Craig Barnett visited Yarra Glen Primary School to present a cheque for $1000 to principal Sue Di Giacomo. Mr Barnett said the money resulted from the hotel’s Friday night raffles, with profits saved until $1000 can be given to a community group. The school is the second recipient of the hotel’s donations, after the Yarra Glen CFA received a $1000

cheque earlier this year. Ms Di Giacomo said half of the donation would go towards physical education at the school and a program that may be run later in the year, with the rest going towards a numeracy recovery program. “We’re starting a numeracy recovery program for students that, perhaps, need a bit of extra help in Year 3 and Year 5, she said. The Yarra Glen Grand Hotel’s raffles are held between 6pm and 7pm on Friday nights. For more information, visit www.yarravalleygrand.com.au or call 9730 1230.
POLICE are hunting for thieves who made off with cigarettes in a latenight theft from Yarra Glen IGA, in a second robbery this month. About 3.30am on Sunday 28 June, thieves broke into the IGA supermarket on Bell Street in Yarra Glen, making off with a quantity of cigarettes. The robbery is the second for the supermarket, after a break-in at 4am on Monday 15 June, where a “substantial amount of cigarettes were stolen, according to Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick. The Yarra Glen robbery on 15 June was one of four cigarette robberies that night. Det Sgt Smithwick said that police were investigating links between Sunday’s incident and those that occurred earlier in the month. “We’ll be looking to see if they are related, he said. Anyone who saw any suspicious behaviour is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Josh Fradley and Paul Sonsie with the new mural. 140968
AN ICONIC Healesville wall has been given a fresh coat of paint and a completely new look by a couple of local artists, who spent last week splashing on an eye-catching design. Healesville artist Paul Sonsie and illustrator Josh Fradley spent last week painting on the wall beside 3 St Leonards Road at the east end of town, erecting a large piece, featuring two blackand-white ibises. For countless years, the wall has been covered in various street art and graffiti pieces, from a desert landscape in 2010 through to pictures of the cartoon Powerpuff Girls. But on the weekend of 20 June, Mr Sonsie and Mr Fradley painted the wall white in preparation for their piece, which they worked on last week. Stopping work briefly for an interview with the Mail, Mr Sonsie said the wall had a deep history of being used for street art in the town. “The history of the wall goes back to when I was little, he said. “There has always been graffiti here - there used to be a Mickey Mouse on the corner, there. Mr Sonsie said that residents and passers-by, as well as the owner of the building, had been supportive of the new piece. But he noted that the ibis was a controversial choice, with an unknown street artist coming down during the week to spray red bullet-holes on the birds.
For more information on Paul Sonsie’s work, visit www.sonsiestudios.com. What do you think of the new piece on the building? Write a letter to the editor to editor@mailnewsgroup.com.au or to 244 Maroondah Highway, Healesville.

Solar stars on a winner IN recent articles, I have highlighted businesses that have installed solar power. It makes their business more sustainable, both financially and environmentally. Fernglen Panels in William Street Ferntree Gully, near Mountain Gate shops, has installed an 18kw solar system (about 72 panels). You can see it from Burwood Highway. It looks fabulous. Until recently, their power bills were $3000 to $4000 per quarter, but
Down to
earth Peter Cook President of the Dandenong Ranges Renewable Energy Association
their bills are now so reduced they expect to pay off the cost of the system in about three years. Another visible example is Semken
Landscaping in Molan Street, Ringwood. Their factory is just before the Heatherdale Road level crossing. They have a 16kw solar system (about 64 panels), which you can see from Melbourne-bound trains. Semken says since it was installed in August 2012, “Our electricity bill is substantially less than previously. Over the summer months, we generate more power than we consume, resulting in a credit balance which is applied against our winter bills”.
Planting for the future By JESSE GRAHAM
Healesville Primary School students Alex and Mitchell, with Cory McGeary from Cummins Filtration, centre. 141023 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM Bond said that this year’s planting marked 15 years of work as part of the council’s Grace Burn Project and 17,000 indigenous plants planted through the project. The project has seen plantings take place at three Healesville waterways, in order to protect and improve the natural environment. To end the day, Melbourne
Water provided a barbecue lunch for all. In an email to the Mail, Ms Bond said the students would return next year for an invertebrate discovery activity with Waterwatch volunteers from HEWI and Landscare. “This helps them to understand how their planting protects all the creatures living in those waterways,” Ms Bond wrote.

Some people say economics alone will drive the uptake of renewable energy. Unfortunately, vested interests (coal/gas) are trying to slow this process down. This is why we need robust government policies like a strong Renewable Energy Target (RET). An ambitious RET of at least 50 per cent by 2030 will deliver jobs, cleaner air and increase our chances of leaving a safe climate for future generations. BUDDING green thumbs from Healesville Primary School took to Queens Park earlier this month, plants in hands, to improve the world around them as part of a yearly program. The planting, organised by Healesville Environment Watch Incorporated (HEWI), saw Grade 3 students team up with workers from Cummins Filtration to plant 2000 plants in the park on Friday 19 June. Indigenous plants, provided through the Yarra Ranges Council, were planted along the Wirrup Yaluk Creek in the park, where platypuses have been spotted recently. The Cummins Filtration staff, who have worked with HEWI and the school on the project for the last four years, acted as buddies for the students as they made their way through the planting. HEWI secretary Maureen
However, cost saving was not their only reason for going solar. They said, “We think of our solar panels as a small contribution to the future well-being of the planet”. Another ‘solar star’ is the BP service station at the corner of Stud Road and Kelletts Road in Rowville. Petrol stations use lots of electricity to power their pumps and their lighting. For businesses with high daytime power demands, solar now just makes sense.

Fire inquiry’s promise of justice - and answers too By KATH GANNAWAY
Extra $1m for hospital THE redevelopment of Healesville Hospital has been bolstered by an extra $1 million in funding from the Victorian Government, following an announcement last week. On Wednesday Health Minister Jill Hennessy announced that the government was contributing an extra $1 million to the currently-$7.8 million redevelopment of the Healesville and District Hospital. According to Ms Hennessy, the funding came about after final tenders for the project revealed the money previously allocated was not enough to deliver the whole project. Executive Director of Acute Health at Eastern Health, David Plunkett, said that more funding was sought so that the finished hospital would still offer all services originally promised. A six-chair renal dialysis clinic, 13-bed acute general medical ward and a new operating theatre are some features of the redevelopment, which will impact almost every room of the hospital. “I think that, with a capital project, just as when you’re doing a house refurbishment, so
much of it depends on the market conditions of the time,” Mr Plunkett said. “We were committed to make sure we could deliver the best services that we can - we didn’t want to compromise the service provision and we didn’t want to compromise what was going to be new.” Eastern Health announced with the extra funding that patients who would normally be treated at Healesville Hospital will receive care at Yarra Ranges Health in Lilydale or Maroondah Hospital while the development takes place. Yarra Valley Community Health and the Yarra Valley Community Medical Service at the hospital will continue to run, but Eastern Health Chief Executive, Alan Lilly, said some services might be offered from different locations in town. Pathology, respiratory, cardiology, endocrinology and antenatal and postnatal maternity services will stay in Healesville for the redevelopment period. Eildon MP, Cindy McLeish, said she was pleased the government was adding funds to the redevelopment. “I’m really pleased there
was this extra money, because you don’t want things to be derailed or to be second best because you don’t have the funds,” she said. “I look forward to seeing a completed hospital.” Save Healesville Hospital Action Group (SHHAG), a community group which has advocated for the improvement of services at the hospital, praised the announcement on its Facebook page last week. Posting that the community has “much to celebrate” with the redevelopment, the group said the range of new services was a “direct result” of the community-run campaign for the hospital. Builders are expected to be appointed for the redevelopment by July, with the construction of the hospital to begin in August construction is expected to take 14-18 months. When asked about the potential for emergency or birthing services to be brought into the new hospital, Mr Plunkett said he “can’t predict what will happen in the future.” “We’re continuing with the plans we’ve had and the services we’ve had in our media and our FAQs (frequently asked questions),” he said.

munity, to hold us to account, to work with us to share concerns and improve practices,” he said. The union today welcomed the report saying firefighters were encouraged, but also warning that the most significant part was yet to come. Maintaining the union’s long-held stand, Mr Marshall said the second half of the year would see the CFA, WorkSafe, Environment Protection Authority, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade and other bodies grilled on why firefighters were exposed to dangerous substances. The UFU has consistently maintained that firefighters were exposed to dangerous substances and that test results warning of the dangers were deliberately kept secret. He said the interim report recommended easier access to records for those affected by Fiskville and said the full extent of documents previously released, but heavily redacted, might now be fully revealed. Addressing the status of the CFA as a much-respected institution, Mr Marshall said the questioning would need to be skillful and objective. “The inquiry will need to put that aside as it questions those responsible for the CFA’s dangerous operations and continued cover-up,” he said. The committee’s final report is due by 1 December. Read the full interim report, including recommendations, at bitly.com/FiskvilleReport

AN INTERIM parliamentary report into the CFA’s Fiskville training facility has vowed to provide answers and justice for those affected. Parliamentary inquiry committee chairwoman Bronwyn Halfpenny MP said a conscious decision had been made to hear first up from firefighters and others affected by practices at Fiskville. The next stage of the hearings will have government departments, agencies and other organisations presenting to the inquiry. In the face of the release of the interim report yesterday, 23 June, United Firefighters Union secretary Peter Marshall and Country Fire Authority CEO Michael Wootten have each released statements flagging that there is still very much more to come. Fiskville was closed on 26 March this year following evidence of water contamination, and after a long and active campaign by the United Firefighters Union to see issues around the use of dangerous materials addressed. Over 450 submissions were received. In an executive summary of the report, the inquiry committee said it was an opportunity to highlight some of the evidence received so far from individuals who had trained there, and from others who have worked and lived near Fiskville. It identified a number of
key themes including the high level of concern among witnesses about cancer and possible health impacts and concern also that those affected should achieve a sense of justice. It recognised that there is broad support for presumptive legislation to address the occupational risk associated with firefighting but said further work must be done to identify an appropriate model. Mr Wootten acknowledged that the CFA had rightly been under the microscope as part of the inquiry. He said, while not on the frontline, CFA management was equally committed to the protection of people’s lives and property, including CFA members. He said all CFA facilities were now subject to a rigorous safety regime of improved governance, independent oversight and ongoing monitoring of the health of impacted CFA members. “If people need to be held to account, they will be, however, in the short term it is important to let the inquiry process run its course, and for CFA to respond to statements that have criticised CFA personnel as part of our further submissions to the inquiry,” Mr Wootten said. He said CFA would take time to consider the report and would be visiting CFA regions to discuss the report and the CFA’s actions in response with their members. “I encourage all CFA members, and members of the com-

Letters Asylum performance questionable HOW different we are from the Italians. I have just read a letter from one Anna Martin. She is an Australian lawyer undertaking research in Turin under the auspices of the United Nations. It seems she has been reflecting recently on the refugee crisis in Europe as compared to that in Australia. She notes that while Italy’s economy is one of the worst in Europe – and that it is struggling with the tens of thousands of migrants arriving by sea – unlike Australia with only a tenth of the numbers – it is not turning to inhumane methods cloaked in secrecy. She tells us that in Italy; “asylum seekers rescued at sea are usually placed in reception centres, which are seen as humanitarian providers rather than detention. Basic services and accommodation are provided, including legal services, and asylum seekers may remain in these centres for up to six months while their claim is being processed. In reality, many asylum seekers remain for up to 12 months - voluntarily. In addition, unaccompanied minors are entitled to an automatic residence permit and benefit from education, healthcare, accommodation and guardianship. Asylum seekers receive a residence permit which allows them to work if their asylum claim is not decided within six months”. This, of course, is the way it used to be in Australia. Currently, nearly all asylum seekers are held in indefinite detention with little or no judicial oversight. Clearly, Anna is keeping a close eye on events here because she notes that apparently we’re also sick of ‘that pesky Gillian Triggs who
keeps going on about children in detention. It appears now that we simply do not wish to hear anything about what happens in Australian detention centres – parliament has made it illegal to tell us anyway’. The ultimate shame in all of this for Australia is that not only are we degrading and punishing asylum seekers for their desperate situation, we are attempting to handball them (for a price) to much smaller and poorer Pacific nations. Anna is singularly unimpressed with our performance. So am I! Lyn Kennedy, Wesburn.
Wake up, road users I DON'T want to pick fights and, in my preamble, I concur that Healesville drivers are exceptionally polite, so it is relaxing to drive in the town (some weekends excluded). In my 35 years in the area, I have probably only had one or two minor dings with cars in The Walk car-park, none I believe on the street. However – accepting that drivers on Nyora Rd, Mount Toolebewong are becoming more courteous by the week – one or two drivers per every seven days don’t keep left and nearly wipe me off the road. One day, I may just give up, or not swerve on a road that is increasingly becoming more dangerous, as the road is not widened to accept more traffic. The consequences of swerving and avoiding vehicles which cut corners is to send me into the bank as I drive upwards, or off the road going downwards, or wipe off the driver’s new beautiful huge shiny black SUV (of which I didn’t see many in New Zealand or China). What is it with us as a culture, huh? This letter is merely a comment, and not a threat, but incidents do happen. Graham Answerth, Healesville.

SINCE the release of the trailer for the new film, Jurassic World, the internet has been abuzz with zookeepers and staff re-creating a scene where a character tames three velociraptors. From walruses to chickens, keepers around the world have posed like actor Chris Pratt’s character, with their arms out and the animals before them. Not to be outdone, Healesville Sanctuary’s Julie Koch posed for this photograph during feeding time at the sanctuary’s kangaroo area. Pages from the past Healesville Guardian 29 June 1935 New JP Welcomed AT THE Healesville Court, Mr Freen PM extended a cordial welcome to Dr S.H. Phillips who adjudicated on the Bench for the first time since his recent appointment as a Justice of the Peace. Mr Freen stated it was a fine thing that a man of the doctor’s high standing and attainment should voluntarily give his valuable time to officiate in the interests of justice. Polling Booths for Badger Creek and Narbethong THROUGH the instrumentality of Cr Fancett, Badger Creek ratepayers are to be favoured with their own polling booth. Cr Dawborn agreed that Badger Creek residents should be given their own booth as many had a long way to come and were greatly inconvenienced. Also if the weather was poor it has been
suggested that Narbethong be included. A New Attraction for Healesville TO LIVE up to its reputation as the ‘world famous tourist resort’ Healesville cannot have too many attractions to lure the sometimes elusive visitor. Though magnificently blessed with an abundance of scenic charm it is nonetheless essential that our district should boost other popular attractions as well. Nowadays scenery is not enough to induce the public to patronise a tourist resort. They must be humoured and provided with adequate facilities for all the modern avenues of sport. At loggerheads over logging By JESSE GRAHAM THE head of Zoos Victoria has spoken out publicly against VicForests’ logging operations in the Central Highlands, saying a new national park is the best way forward. Zoos Victoria CEO Jenny Gray expressed a number of criticisms of the logging body in a letter on 21 January this year, released by the organisation earlier this month. In the letter, which was a submission to VicForests’ Draft Forest Management Plan and Draft High Conservation Value Strategy, Ms Gray lists the body’s current forest management processes as “inadequate to protect the Leadbeater’s Possum from extinction.” Underneath this, she wrote that the Great Forest National Park proposal is the “most important conservation action” for the possum, which was recently revised to critically endangered. The letter also addresses the current state of the old growth forests in the Central Highlands, which she said only made up one per cent of the total forest area. Ms Gray wrote that a “clear strategy” should be in place to expand old growth to 30 per cent of the forest in the future, among other suggestions. In an interview with the Mail, Ms Gray said that VicFor-

ests requested input from Zoos Victoria on their draft documents, which led to her letter. She said her opinion on the GFNP came from modelling from the Arthur Rylah Institute, undertaken as part of the Leadbeater’s Possum Advisory Group (LPAG) discussions last year. Ms Gray said the modelling showed the GFNP as having “the greatest benefit” for the animal, but said even that would not guarantee protection from extinction. She said, if Zoos Victoria was called to a round-table discussion such as those suggested by Environment Minister Lisa Neville, the group would have the position of “maximising return” for the possum. “The terms of reference would be really important, and we would participate and look at what the science tells us
against the terms of reference of the round table,” she said. “We are always looking for what maximises the return for the animal ... and the model indicated that (the GFNP) would give the best outcome to the animal.” The Mail submitted a number of questions about Ms Gray’s concerns to VicForests, including whether her recommendations would be adopted by the organisation. VicForests’ general manager of Stakeholders and Planning, Nathan Trushell, said Ms Gray’s letter was “one of many” submissions into the documents. “We have acknowledged all submissions made and are still considering all feedback received,” Mr Trushell said. “We plan to release the updated documents later this year.”
Over one century ago, Charles Health emigrated from England to Australia and started a stonemason business in South Melbourne. Today, Malcolm Heath continues in Charles Heath’s footsteps as a fourth-generation stonemason, in his new premises at Boronia, formerly of Box Hill and Lilydale. Malcolm can still remember the days when the trade used horse and cart, although he was only a small boy at the time. At age 11, he started learning the trade. Then, at age 16, he joined his father as an apprentice stonemason. Stonemasonry has come a long way since Charles Heath started his business more than 100 years ago, especially the tools and technology. Malcom says every day is different, every day throws new challenges and this is something he enjoys. Dealing with grieving families is not easy, but something the business takes in their stride. Heath Memorials takes pride in its extensive range of traditional memorials erected throughout Melbourne and surrounding cemeteries, including the Dandenong Ranges, Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula. Unlike many of their competitors, they still manufacture most of their memorials in the factory, using both local and imported stone. They are of the firm belief that the quality of Australian stone is far better than most of the imported Chinese and Indian granites, so they try their best to promote Australian granites. In recent times, they completed works for the
Victoria Police Restoration Committee, in which they restored the graves of slain police officers, as well as marked the graves of unmarked police officers across Victoria. They also won the tender to erect and build the niche walls at the Ferntree Gully Cemetery, which are made from Australian granite. The project was built on time, and on budget, while up against overseas companies which only use granite from China or India. Investing in new, up-to-date equipment is a must, so they can compete with their competitors in the manufacturing of stone. They have also taken on two new apprentices this year, which is exciting not only for them, but the business. When dealing with the business, you are talking directly to the manufacturer and not a third party. Their consultants are highly trained and have full understanding of their client’s needs. Heath Memorials take pride in their reputation for giving personal service and attention to quality and detail. This is the case, whether it is for a small home pet memorial, full monument, headstone and base, additional lettering or the renovation or an existing memorial. The business invites anyone to their new premises, located at 18 Kalman Drive, Boronia, to discuss their needs.

WITH the new cartoon film, Minions, screening in cinemas around the state, Croydon Cinemas and the Mail are holding a give-away for one lucky fan. The prize pack includes a Minions shopper bag, sticker sheet, activity set and a squishy stress-Bob, all of which are perfect for a young fan of the new film, which is a prequel to the hit movie, Despicable Me.
By JESSE GRAHAM ART from Australia’s Top End will be on display in Yarra Glen for two months when the Tiwi Ochre exhibition opens at Art at Linden Gate. Tiwi Ochre features more than 30 handmade pieces created by Tiwi artists on Melville Island in the Northern Territory on a number of different mediums. “There’s canvases, carvings, works on paper and some prints as well,” Art at Linden Gate gallery director, Reggie Clark, told the Mail. Ms Clark said that Tiwi art differed from mainland Australia’s Indigenous art, in that ochre is still used for their art, as well as crosshatching designs and prominent animal figures, such as birds. “They do a lot of crosshatching and dots, not necessarily to tell a story, but based on their body paint that they use for ceremonies,” she said. The exhibition features works from several Tiwi artists including Kitty Kantilla, Aileen Henry, Freda Warlipini and Harold Porkalari, among others. Ms Clark said that her parents, who ran the gallery before her, had run exhibitions with Tiwi pieces in the past, and that she decided to follow suit. “My parents ... they went up to the Tiwi Islands a few times,” she said.

The Tiwi Ochre exhibition will be held until 31 August. For more information, visit www.artatlindengate.com, call 9730 1861 or visit the gallery at 899 Healesville-Yarra Glen Road.

Stunning work from the inside Inside Out (PG) Starring: Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Richard Kind, Bill Hader INSIDE Out, Pixar’s latest release, is a stunning work of moving, insightful drama and vibrant visual imagination. Within the mind of a happy little girl named Riley, there are five personified emotions that run her day-to-day thoughts. But when Riley’s family relocation to San Francisco coincides with a disaster separating Joy (the boss, voiced by Amy Poehler) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) from the mind Headquarters,
Riley’s life and feelings start to go downhill. Inside Out is one of the most wonderfully surreal and visually inventive family movies ever made. The film is brimming with colourful, thrilling set-pieces woven into a beautifully poignant journey of acceptance and self-discovery. The characters are also extraordinarily well-written. Fear, Anger and Disgust (left at the helm in Joy and Sadness’s absence) are fun and nuanced beyond their necessarily one-note characterisation, and Joy and Sadness both have engaging, profoundly touching arcs.
Sadness gradually gains more selfconfidence, and Joy comes to realise that sadness is a necessary emotion in life. The portrayal of Riley’s childhood depression and emotional instability feels heart-breakingly real, and will resonate with viewers of any age. The film also contains plenty of clever humour for the kids and some fantastic witty symbolism (representing different parts of the brain and psyche) for the adults. Inside Out is a masterpiece from the comeback kings of family animation. - SETH HYNES

Crash stimulants take a toll By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS EASTERN Melbourne has seen a spike in people caught driving under the influence of illicit drugs. Acting Inspector for Eastern Division to Tasking and Coordination Steve Rosewarne said the trends in drug-driving were worrying. This division oversees various aspects of police units, including highway patrol, to combat the increase in drug- related crimes. “We see an increase in the amount of people who are detected drug-driving,” Insp Rosewarne said. “A high percentage of those caught driving under the influence of drugs record methamphetamine in their system, including ice.” Insp Rosewarne said more police officers were being trained in administering roadside drug tests, and people using drugs and driving would be caught. “We will be expanding roadside drug testing operations and they will be a more consistent part of road safety across the whole of the state,” Insp Rosewarne said. Highway Patrol members from Knox and Maroondah conducted Operation Snookered recently which detected 18 drink and nine drug drivers on one night. Transport Accident Commiion (TAC) chief executive officer Janet Dore said people who drove under the influence of drugs were a danger to the community. “Every year, people die and are seriously injured on Victorian roads as a result of people who take drugs and drive,” she said. According to the TAC, fatality statistics from the past five years show that around 37 per cent of drivers and riders killed on Victorian roads had alcohol, illicit or prescription drugs in their system,
Roadside drug testing is becoming more consistent with Victoria Police. 141054 or a combination of all of these. The TAC is currently running a campaign to educate drivers that all Victoria Police booze buses are also equipped to test drivers for illegal drugs. The campaign was updated last year to target

the rising use of methamphetamines after 2013 saw Victoria experience its worst year for deaths involving drivers and riders with stimulant in their system. TAC statistics show that in 2013 14.9 per cent of drivers and riders killed on the road had a stimulant, such as ice or other amphetamines,
in their system. “As well putting themselves and others in the community at risk of death or serious injury, people who drive on drugs need to be aware that they will be caught and the consequences can be serious,” Ms Dore said.

MEET RICHARD - NEW TO LANDMARK HARCOURTS After just two months with Landmark-Harcourts in Wandin, Richard Taylor has endeared himself to the locals through his willingness to become involved and be an active member of the local community. Richard is a fully-licensed agent who has worked in the South Gippsland region for more than 10 years with LJ Hooker and Stockdale and Leggo as Branch Manager. “I can see the tremendous potential of the Landmark Harcourts office being at the gateway to the Yarra Valley and on to Warburton which includes a sales area from Healesville to Monbulk and Coldstream through to Lilydale and Mount Evelyn. Having loads of window display exposure on the Warburton Highway, plus a growing property management portfolio with excellent support staff and a network of Harcourts and Landmark Harcourts offices around the country behind me, I’m very excited,” says Richard. Very down-to-earth and approachable, Richard recently appeared on TV show, “Selling Houses Australia” on Foxtel, which featured a makeover and marketing plan that delivered an excellent result for the vendor. His marketing skills also extend to print, internet and social media. Richard enjoys working in a small agency, having the ability to completely manage every aspect of a property listing whilst keeping vendors regularly updated on the progress and response of marketing. “Competition amongst agents working within larger offices is not ideal. Vendors can often end up being worse off,” says Richard. He cites a recent example of a lifestyle property, previously listed with a large agency for 18 months which was located a little off the beaten track but with stunning views. The vendor sought help from Richard who immediately got to work on correcting the situation. Pleasingly, he has just sold the property within 20 days of listing it and at more than the asking price. Richard says, “It’s largely about identifying a property’s key features without dismissing negative aspects. It’s also about being honest but acting entirely in the vendor’s best interest.” Richard is no stranger to rural life and the hard physical work involved. He was raised on a dairy farm and during the ‘90s he even ran his own farm enterprise growing potatoes and onions. “I’m quite comfortable marketing any type of property, be it residential homes, lifestyle properties, large-scale farms and commercial properties,” he says. Richard has two adult children and is soon to be a grand dad for the second time. He is also passionate about team sport, in particular cricket and AFL having played both to a high standard in Gippsland. His most memorable and rewarding times were in the years of coaching juniors and watching them develop as young men and women. So for any professional assistance or advice regarding all types of property (or a heart to heart on how the AFL Saints rebuilding is going) call Richard on 0407081957 or call in to Landmark Harcourts at Shop 1, 362 Warburton Highway, Wandin North.

Early love of learning AS part of the ongoing work, the Healesville Living and Learning Centre (HLLC) does in the community, they have recently been hosting the students from St Brigid’s Primary School, which has been participating in a Youth Mural Project and Community Garden activities. Encouraging participation in community activities builds community spirit and pride in young people, and connects them to the world outside their school and home. It also instils a love of learning at an early age. For all those older members of the community whose school days didn’t leave them with a love of learning, HLLC can offer a wide range of social, educational and training options to assist you to find a new career, employment or refresh your skills. Finding the right course can be confusing, and there are many things to consider. Are you choosing a new career path? Do you want to improve your skills to strengthen your work performance and possible job advancements? Or are you out of work and looking for the right qualification to open doors and get the attention of employers? The next thing is where do you go? Choosing a training provider can be very tricky in today’s environment, and there are a few things you should check out. Are they registered? How long have they been operating? What is the quality of the training like? Then, there is cost. This is the tricky one and you need to be careful. The cheapest fee does not necessarily equal quality. Community Providers, like the Healesville Living and Learning Centre, are focused on providing quality training with tons of support in a friendly environment. The mid-year intake for certificate and work skills courses is now open. HLLC offers a course and career guidance service which can help people choose the right course for them. Drop in, call, or check out the website - www. healesvillelearningcentre.org or Facebook page www.facebook.com/HealesvilleLearningCentre. The friendly staff at the centre is ready to help.

THE Autumn 2015 Firewood Collection Season will today close across Victoria. Jon Rofe, from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), said it was important the community adheres to these rules. “We want to remind people that, from 1 July, all designated firewood collection areas will be closed over the winter
period,” he said. “It won’t be legal for people to collect firewood on public land until the start of the Spring Firewood Collection Season.” The public will be able to start collecting firewood again from designated firewood collection areas from 1 September. DELWP and Parks Victoria staff will be patrolling parks,
forests and reserves during winter to ensure people are doing the right thing. For more details, visit www. delwp.vic.gov.au/parks-forestsand-crown-land/firewood. Any information about the illegal removal of firewood for sale can be reported to DELWP on 136 186 and quote Operation Chainsaw.

Sam is on target By KATH GANNAWAY UPPER Yarra archer Sam Breeden is adding to his swag of achievements, breaking records at the recent Pacific Regional Field Archery Championships. Competing in the young adult group, for archers 17 to 18, Sam came first overall and set records at world, national, Pacific and state level. The five-day competition, held at Sale earlier this month, attracted competitors from around Australia and New Zealand. Sam set his mind on competition archery after firing his first arrow at 12 during a visit to the Yarra Valley Archery Park with Warburton Scouts. Six years later, competition archery remains his passion. “I’m still loving the sport,” he told the Mail last week adding that he has branched out to focus on field archery. Field archery replicates hunting with 28 inanimate targets scattered throughout bushland. “Field archery is as close as you can go to hunting in the wild and I definitely enjoy it more than anything else,” Sam said. “My best performance over the competitions would have been in
petition with a fair degree of confidence, but as news came through each morning on the previous day’s results, he was a very happy archer. “I went in expecting perhaps to come first or second, but not to set records,” he said. He said the sport has already opened up lots of opportunities and he sees more for the future. “Meeting new people and making lots of good friends through archery all over Australia is definitely one of the great benefits,” he said. He has set his sights on finishing VCAL with the Upper Yarra Valley Community School, studying for a Diploma in Disability Studies, and competing in field archery at an international level. Training now involves tournaments almost every weekend which in itself is a challenge. To compete at a high level, with the best equipment possible and travelling for tournament practice, is expensive. Sam is looking for a sponsor who is target driven - as he is. Potential sponsors can contact Sam through UYVCS on 5967 1776.

Perfect score despite shadows AT THE Woods Point Gun Club, the competitors for the Howqua Championships faced a difficult day of shooting. The weather was cold and clear, but the light was poor. The clubs is located in a valley surrounded by mountains and tall timber, which means that at the mid-year shoots, the shadows over the ground make the targets extremely difficult to see. So this shoot was challenging, as can be seen by the final scores. However, this didn’t stop Trevor Ewert and Phillip Desmond from shooting perfect 15/15 scores in the eye opener. The first championship was 25 targets double barrel supported by long-term sponsor, Scott McKenzie of Jamieson River Autos. Mick Ward returned to top form to shoot a perfect 25/25 to take the JRA sash outright as well as the AA Grade prize. Desmond’s 24/25 was enough for AA 2nd. A Grade was easily won by Laurie Poile 23/25 from Tom Apps 21/25. Phil McDonough for his first shoot in six months took B Grade, 21/25 with Daniel Chinn 2nd, 19/25. Now that he has regrown his beard after ‘Movember’, Ron Press regained enough strength to take C Grade 21/25 with Steven Bedggood in second place 20/25. The main event was the Phil Mc-

Donough sponsored Deauville Quadruples, 80 targets of sheer difficulty. Shot in randomly selected teams of two, they had to try and shoot four targets at a time with only four shots between them. The targets were hard and the scores were low. The best team was Daryl Ewert and John Winter with a final score of 53/100 after a shoot-off with Tom Apps and Garry Ewert who took 2nd place, 47/100. Trevor Ewert and David Fraser won third with 46/100 while Dave Hoon and Lachlan O’Halloran rounded out the winners’ list on fourth with 49/100 after a shoot-off with Ward and Bedggood. The day finished with 15 pair of double rise tower sponsored by Steven and Cassie Bedggood. After shooting 24/30 each, Trevor Ewert and Mick Ward shot off for the sash with Ward taking the honours 41/50 to Ewert’s 38/50. Daryl Ewert won third with 20/30 followed by McDonough in fourth place, 19/30. Mick Ward also claimed the Steven and Cassie Bedggood High Gun Sash with 89/135. A big pot of biting chilli con carne, Bushies Bakery pies and a barbecue kept everyone warm and well-fed. The next shoot is the Matlock Championships on Sunday, 26 July, at 10.30am.

Improvement each week
THE Healesville Juniors took on Monbulk this weekend and Ferntree Gully travelled to Queens Park for the under-12 Girls clash. The under-10 game was a tough contest and the game was very tight in the early stages. To the boys’ credit, they were able to outwork their opposition as the game progressed and were able to kick five goals in the second half. The under-11s got off to a great start, with two quick goals and held Monbulk goalless. Monbulk then came back strong to run out winners in the end, but the Healesville players once again fought it out to the end. The team is coming together and starting to play some great football. The under-12 Girls took on the top-oftable Ferntree Gully side. Ferntree Gully proved too strong on the day, with Healesville missing key players this week, but it is exciting to watch the girls as the coaching staff can see the improvement every week in their endeavour, tackling and kicking. The under-12s put together a comprehensive team performance against Monbulk, close to their best for the year. After an impressive opening from Monbulk, where their centre clearance work was a feature, the team settled and got things back on our terms by quarter time. The remainder of the game saw the team’s running style of play kick in - and plenty of clean, precise ball movement from the depths of defence, right

Upwey well Watered By JUDY ORREN DIVISION 1 SENIORS Upwey 18.18 (126) d Mount Evelyn 11.18 (84) BOTH teams were very wayward in the first half as they just couldn’t split the big sticks on a regular basis. Upwey did have more of the play as they led by 20 points going into half-time, with the scoreline at 6.11 (47) to 3.9 (27). The second half was a bit of a goal feast, with 20 majors being scored, but it was Upwey that used the ball a lot cleaner as they kept stretching their lead. They added 12 goals to 8 to win by 42 points. Upwey’s Daniel Waters was superb as he finished with 10 goals after a clear best on ground performance. Upwey Tecoma best players: D. Waters (10 goals), B. Hinton, T. Robinson (2 goals) Mount Evelyn best players: S. Martin (3 goals), C. Urquhart, M. Condello (3 goals) Olinda Ferny Creek 17.10 (112) d Belgrave 10.6 (67) A great opening term was had between these two sides as they went goal for goal, with Belgrave going to the first break with a narrow fivepoint lead. Olinda’s work rate was superb in the second quarter and Belgrave struggled to match them. Olinda added 6 goals to 1 and led by a handy 26 points at half-time. The third quarter was an even contest, with both sides booting three goals, but Olinda maintained their half-time lead. The last term saw Olinda’s fitness prove too good for Belgrave as they ran away with the game, booting 4 goals to 1 to win by an impressive 45 points. Olinda Ferny Creek best players: D. Noorda, D. Wilson (1 goal), L. Meadows (1 goal) Belgrave best players: B. Dadswell (3 goals), D. Collins, T. Stubley Wandin 28.13 (181) d Warburton Millgrove 6.11 (47) Wandin yet again showed their class as they completely outplayed Warburton from the outset. Wandin led by 24 points at quarter time and then raced to a 58-point lead by the half after a 7 goal to 2 second term. The second half was completely dominated by Wandin as they booted 4 goals to 1 in the third. They then finished off the day with a brilliant last quarter where they slammed on 11 goals to 1 to win by a massive 134 points. Wandin best players: R. Wilson, R. Ross (3 goals), J. Bayliss (2 goals) Warburton Millgrove best players: L. Barnard (2 goals), B. Clinch, A. Joyce (2 goals) Monbulk 14.14 (98) d Woori Yallock 12.13 (85) Monbulk is setting themselves up for a good finals assault after a terrific, hard-fought win over Woori Yallock. A very even start saw scores level at quarter time, but it was Woori Yallock in the
second term that looked to be using the ball better, as they booted 6 goals to 4 to go to the main break with a two-goal buffer. The third quarter saw Monbulk winning a lot more of the one-onone contests as they slowly got the game back on their terms. They booted 4 goals to 1 and at threequarter time they held a nine-point lead. The last quarter was a good battle, but Monbulk had the answers to any challenges that Woori threw their way. They finished the day with a 3-goal-to-2 quarter to win by 13 points in what was a great four-quarter battle. Monbulk best players: S. Williams (1 goal), M. Langworthy (6 goals), K. Gray (1 goal) Woori Yallock best players: S. Kennedy, M. Batten, D. Ryan (1 goal) Healesville 22.14 (146) d Yarra Glen 6.10 (46) Healesville started a little slow, and only led this game by 15 points at quarter-time; however, after that it was all one-way traffic as they ran right over the top of a disappointing Yarra Glen. Healesville slammed on 8 goals to 1 in the second term and went to the long break with a sizeable 51-point lead. The second half was more of the same as Healesville booted 5 goals to 2 in the third and finished the game off well with a 6 goal to 1 final term to win an even 100 points, in what was a good display of football. Healesville best players: M. Anson, G. Mason (3 goals), D. Anderson (1 goal) Yarra Glen best players: R. Gurney (1 goal), C. Moate, M. Attard (3 goals). DIVISION 2 SENIORS Yea 11.7 (73) d Alexandra 8.11 (59) Yea best players: D. Craig, D. Evans, S. Martin (1 goal) Emerald 17.17 (119) d Powelltown 13.6 (84) Emerald may have won by 35 points, but they had to work hard for their victory. Emerald always looked the better side as they got out to a 30-point lead by half-time. Powelltown did give it their all in the second half, but Emerald had all the answers. The remainder of the game was a very even and tough battle, but Powelltown just couldn’t string goals together to put any real pressure on Emerald’s lead. Emerald remains one game clear on top of the ladder, and are looking good to remain there as they have quite a superior percentage to all other sides as well. Emerald best players: C. Porter (1 goal), D. Isaacson, C. Thomson. Powelltown best players: P. Allen, J. Walker, K. Larsen. Kinglake 15.10 (100) d Yarra Junction 9.5.59 Kinglake is back on the winners’ list, thanks to a good first half in this clash. They led by eight
points at quarter time, but then really got their game up and going in the second term, booting 8 goals to 1 to lead by 49 points by the half. The second half was actually a really good battle and Yarra Junction took it right up to Kinglake. They, in fact, outscored them 7 goals to 5 in the second half, but Kinglake’s second-quarter dominance proved to be the difference come final siren. Kinglake best players: A. McLaren, T. ThoneKain (1 goal), L. Arthurson (2 goals) Yarra Junction best players: J. Delaney (2 goals), C. Spalding (1 goal), J. Black Seville 14.10 (94) d Gembrook Cockatoo 9.12 (66) This was a pretty good four-quarter performance from Seville who held Gembrook at bay all day. Seville led by just two goals at quarter and half-time, but they pulled away somewhat in the third with a 5 goal to 3 quarter to lead by 25 points at the last break. The last quarter was a decent contest, but as hard as Gembrook put in it was Seville with all the answers. They booted 4 goals to 3 to finish the day with a 28-point victory which sees them in sixth spot and just one game behind Gembrook in 5th. Seville best players: L. Casini, M. Goff, K.
