RATEPAYERS are expected to shoulder the burden of council’s multi-million dollar debt when it hands down its budget this week. Council is holding a closed meeting at 4pm today (Thursday, 2 July) to table the 2015/16 budget, which will include a rate hike but little evidence council is making cutbacks to expenses. A number of hints have already been passed as to what the budget could contain, including a large rate increase, the possible addition of levies to cover disasters, tourism and bridges and a cut in the plant and equipment budget. But insiders said council was unwilling to reduce expenditure on big-ticket items such as employment where there was room for deployment and staff reductions without impacting on ratepayer services. “The budget will show a few hours here or there reduced on part-time council jobs, but that is not the cut backs needed when you have nine engineers and at least four community development officers on your books,” a council insider said. “No one wants job cuts on essential services like roads, libraries, swimming pools, road gangs, parks and the front counter staff, but major cuts can be made in upper level administration.” The financial plan’s architects - Mayor Peter Blundell and CEO David Keenan - this week declined to give any insight into what the budget contained ahead of today’s meeting. But previously, Cr Blundell said the SDRC was crunching the numbers on all service and program costings for possible savings and ratepayers should be prepared for an above CPI rate increase. Last year, council increased rates by 5 per cent. The SDRC’s annual budget is a political hot potato, with councillors anxious about escalating debt levels, currently at $31 million. This week, councillors told Southern Free Times they would not give the budget the green light unless there was evidence of major purse tightening. Continued on page 2

Pet re-homing rates up By SONJA KOREMANS ANIMAL rehoming rates on the Southern Downs are improving. Southern Downs Regional Council figures show the region’s pound euthanasia rates have fallen over the past three years. Mayor Peter Blundell said that in May 2015 no dogs impounded at the Warwick Animal Pound were euthanised, 35 per cent were released, and the remaining 65 per cent were rehomed, in comparison with March 2011, which saw 80 per cent of impounded dogs euthanised, 10 per cent released and 10 per cent rehomed.

“Similar positive results were achieved at the Stanthorpe Animal Pound in May 2015, with zero dogs euthanised, 45 per cent released and 55 per cent rehomed, in comparison with figures from March 2012 which reflected 80 per cent of impounded dogs euthanised, and 20 per cent released, Cr Blundell said. “These improved figures are a result of the close working relationship between council’s Local Law Animal Control Officers and animal welfare organisations based in and outside of the region, to ensure that release or rehoming of animals to new owners is the highest priority, he said.

Cr Blundell said. The cost of the extension, which included security fencing, landscaping and a new animal holding yard, is expected to come in at $240,000, $40,000 under the project allocation in the 2014/’15 capital budget, Mr Blundell said. If you’re thinking about adding a pet to your family, consider rehoming an animal from council’s animal pounds. For further information about animals currently available for rehoming, telephone council’s Community Contact Centre on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 69 7372) or visit council’s website www.sdrc.qld.gov.au.

The extension to the Stanthorpe pound is expected to cost $240,000.

OPEN 7 DAYS for Lunch & Dinner

A new extension to SDRC’s Stanthorpe Animal Pound will open later this month. “The new animal pound extension provides much-needed upgraded office space for council’s animal control and pest management officers, he said. “It offers a more comfortable and customer-focused environment for those residents visiting the facility to re-home or release impounded animals. “The upgrade also encompasses an open area for safe storage of pest control chemicals and baits, as well as storage for other pest and animal control equipment,

From page 1 “Continual rate rises without cutting expenses to cover costs is not the answer, Councillor Jamie Mackenzie said. “We can’t reveal budget details yet, but our message months ago to the mayor and bureaucrats was to keep cutting expenses. “But it seems we have been ignored, despite hours of meetings behind closed doors. Others who did not want to go on the record said councillors were unlikely to agree to many of the measures without amendments and changes.

Controversy has also surrounded the date of Thursday’s budget adoption meeting with some councillors saying two days did not give them sufficient time to read over the papers ahead of today’s meeting. However, Mr Keenan said the process was correct and in line with the Local Government Act. The Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) this week said it was not concerned about Southern Downs Regional Council’s debt levels. “There are other councils in Queensland with greater

debt, and it’s not uncommon now as there is less funding to councils from state and federal governments, an LGAQ spokesman said. “The Southern Downs Regional Council debt is not one that has been brought to our attention. But council’s struggle to remain in the black since its amalgamation seven years ago has caused deep disquiet throughout the community and infighting within council. If council debt reaches unserviceable levels, a snap council election could be held and auditors brought in. The SDRC election is in March next year.

backdown

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council has scrapped its planned infrastructure charge increases that would have cost developers tens of thousands of dollars more on projects. The move came at this month's council meeting last week, and follows strong opposition to the proposed increases by developers. The council unanimously voted to hold existing charges as they are and consider in the future lowering these charges to stimulate the local economy. Under the plan to lower rates mooted by Councillor Jamie Mackenzie, infrastructure charges would be reduced across the board if there was an agreement between developers and council. If introduced, the charges would be set on a case by case basis. Developers are invited to discuss the move with council in open forums on 14 July in Warwick and 16 July in Stanthorpe.

Rape charge A WARWICK man will plead not guilty in Warwick District Court to one count of rape. Prosecutors allege the man committed a sexual assault on a four-year-old girl in May last year. Police arrested the man after after a complaint from the girl’s mother. The man appeared in court on Monday, and the case was adjourned. Judge Douglas McGill will preside over the case, set to start on Wednesday (1 July).

A flashing light just before the southern Stanthorpe bypass intersection. drivers with distracting signs.” The man claimed he didn’t realise he was leaving the highway,” Mr Hassall said. “So if the same situation arose again this same man would also have the added distraction of a flashing sign. “If the Transport and Main Roads Department money to put up such an expensive sign why didn’t it spend that money on making the intersection safer, not more dangerous? Nikki, who was 20 at the time,

was on her way to visit her parents winery and help pick grapes for their first vintage. She had been an outstanding student at Warwick State High School, receiving the Mayor’s medal for student of the year in 2000 before going on to study education at the University of Queensland. “I drive past this intersection every day and think about Nikki’s accident. If we can raise awareness on how dangerous this stretch of road still is and seek to have the speed limit reduced and it made safer in

any way, then other drivers will have a better chance than my daughter and son and their friend did,” Mr Hassall said. A Transport and Main Roads Department spokesperson the current speed limit of 80km/h on the section of the New England Highway is appropriate and not currently suject to change. She said the location of the flashing speed sign in front of the intersection was determined following consultation with Southern Downs Regional Council and the Queensland Police Service. Crash figures aren’t available for the southern Stanthorpe bypass intersection, but Darling Downs roads are among the most dangerous in the state. Figures from the Transport and Main Roads Department showed 42 people died on Downs and south western roads last year. The region has the second highest road toll in Queensland.

FIFTEEN motorists tested positive to drug driving across the Darling Downs on the weekend. “Drivers need to plan their driving. If you are attending a party, drinking, taking drugs either prescription or otherwise, you need to plan options so as not to place yourself or others at risk on Queensland roads,” Brad Clark, Officer in Charge of Toowoomba Road Policing Unit said. Four drivers were also fined for using mobile phones, Senior Sergeant Clark said. “You have to ask yourself, is the text or call worth a $341 fine, or even worse, a crash,” he said.

Airlifted from accident A HUSBAND and wife, 60, were airlifted to hospital after crashing their motorbike on Sunday afternoon. It is believed the pair were part of a motorcyclist group touring the region, when the bike crashed at the Two Mile bridge, at Pikedale, around noon. The male suffered a compound fracture to his right arm, an open wound to his abdomen and cuts to both his legs. Police and Emergency Services were called to attend, and both rider and pillion were taken to Stanthorpe Hospital. The crash is under investigation.

Caution call after crash in Cottonvale Both vehicles were extensively damaged and required towing from the scene. While there was no serious injuries, a male driver and female passenger were taken to Stanthorpe Hospital for medical examination. Stanthorpe police Sergeant Damian Grace said the incident occurred when a blue Commo-

dore utility attempted to turn onto the highway directly in front of an already northbound driven Toyota 4 wheel drive. “In this case, it was only fortunate that the injuries were not more serious through what is apparent as a totally avoidable incident,” Sgt Grace said.

BALLANDEAN winemaker Tony Hassall says more lives will to be lost at one of the region’s worst road crash zones unless the speed limit is reduced and distracting signs removed. Mr Hassall has spent the past 20 years on the Southern Downs, travels on the New England Highway daily and has not seen improvements made to one of its worst black spots - the southern Stanthorpe bypass intersection - in more than ten years. Mr Hassall is better qualified than most road users to speak with authority on the subject as his daughter Nikki and her friend Paul were killed in a car accident at the intersection 12 years ago, when a driver failed to give way, ploughing into their vehicle. Mr Hassall’s son Michael, who was a passenger in Nikki’s car, was critically injured in the crash.“The intersection hasn’t been changed to make it safer since Nikki and Paul’s deaths and I would like to see a 60km/h zone here as most people drive through at 100km/h and it’s all too quick for them to react when they get to the intersection,” Mr Hassall said. “You can see people racing through without even realising they are leaving the highway and need to give way.” Mr Hassall said a red flashing sign placed near the intersection this week was a major distraction for drivers making it even more of a risk zone. “In Nikki’s accident, the driver in the other car was at fault and had bad sight, but it’s a hazardous road regardless and we don’t want to make it even more confusing for

Casey’s tips

Just add danger THE new sign at the southern Stanthorpe bypass intersection purporting to offer road safety information is ironically making the intersection more dangerous. Who in their right minds would put a distracting flashing road sign with random messages in the middle of an already dangerous intersection? Twelve years ago our 20-year-old daughter Nikki and our son’s best friend Paul were killed at this intersection. Nikki was driving south along the highway when an elderly man travelling north crossed the intersection towards Stanthorpe through the give way sign into Nikki’s path, hitting her headon. I was in the vehicle behind Nikki so I saw it happen. The man claimed he didn’t realise he was leaving the highway.

So if the same situation arose again this same man would also have the added distraction of a flashing sign. If they have money to put up such an expensive sign why didn’t they spend that money on making the intersection safer, not more dangerous? Does the Department of Transport and Main Roads have any common sense? Tony Hassall, Ballandean.

Yangan waterline from Warwick for which he campaigned. Council had to borrow money for the project and it is costed which means the debt will eventually be repaid by those who use the water. This is what councils do. The loan is ‘costed’. The same can be said for the Allora water pipeline. It was made necessary because the underground water which supplied the town had become polluted by sewage from septic systems. Money needed to be borrowed to pay for this work and in due course, the loan will be repaid by those who use the water. Again, this is what councils do and this is how they achieve what we, the ratepayer ask for. Distance here is an important consideration. Neither Yangan nor Allora are ‘next door’ as they would be were this Brisbane or the Gold Coast. Will a change of personnel on council allevi-

Council bashing MANY of your readers are tired of the continual ‘council bashing’ each week in the letters page of the SFT. Yes, the Southern Downs Regional Council does have a debt, but so does almost every other council in the state. Mr Lou Rowan in his letter, ‘Government Must Step In” (SFT 25 June), fails to take into account the cost of the

ate the debt? No. Will a total change of all bureaucrats alleviate the debt? No. It seems to me we go through this ‘change the council’ every time there is an election on the horizon, but very few new candidates of quality stand up so we stay with the people we know and for my money, it’s a job they can have. John Skinner, The Glen.

of the council’s massive debt. We have also heard there won’t be enough money available to pay the council wages. Businesses have had to cut staff, so why doesn’t the council? There is so much deadwood in this council, you only have to take a look around to see council workers taking longer breaks than allocated. I do agree with Darryl Coleman that at least 50 per cent of council staff could go. How can we be so far in debt ($36 million) and it’s blamed on floods but other councils have had to wear the cost of severe flooding and haven’t put their rates up as much or are as far in debt. I lived in Grantham and we went through many destructive floods and didn’t have to put up with extreme rate hikes. Maybe this council should take their example. Ken Whiteland, Rosenthal Heights, Warwick.

What a debt we owe I AM responding to Darryl Coleman’s letter (18 June) regarding the Southern Downs Regional Council. I completely agree with his views. My biggest concern is the expected rate rise could be as much as seven per cent and we hardly get any community amenities and services now and we will get even less in the future because

THE Killarney Cup in Warwick has been another resounding success with more than 400 people attending the winter race meeting. The event on Saturday featured five races and 60 horses. A great day was had by all but perhaps none more so than Storm Magic, winner of the 1500 metres, along with its jockey Amy Van DerSanden. It was the five-year-old’s ninth win from 41 starts. The Jackie Crompton trained horse has now won the Killarney, Kilcoy and Tara Cups to round out a nice resume. Ms Crompton also had two other runners on the day although neither of them placed. Everyone got into the spirit with a fashion parade and best dressed prizes awarded for the best couple, male, female and juniors. Photographer TERRY WEST was there to cover all the action. Punters will get their next chance to show off at the Jumpers and Jazz race day in Warwick on 25 July. The TAB has scheduled five events at the Warwick club between now and 20 February with the pinnacle being the Warwick Credit Union Warwick Cup on 10 October.

KEEP an eye on the driveway these winter school holidays as RACQ has urged drivers heading to work this week to be mindful of children playing around neighbourhood streets. RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie said with more children about, drivers needed to be extra careful especially in driveways. “We know there are about three children injured in low-speed incidents every week in Queensland, many of them in driveways and car parks,” Ms Ritchie said. “Young children lack spatial awareness of the dangers of a moving vehicle, and if the driver is unable to see them on a driveway it is easy for a tragedy to occur. “While kids should be taught from a very young age how to be safe around cars, the reality is they can be very unpredictable, so motorists need to be alert and prepared for the unexpected,” she aid. Ms Ritchie said research showed driveway incidents most commonly occurred when young children were left playing unsupervised or ran into the path of the moving vehicle. Poor reversing visibility added to the difficulty of the driver seeing the child before it was too late. Ms Ritchie said the following steps could be taken to help reduce driveway risk: - Always supervise children, especially around areas near parked or moving vehicles; - Ensure young children play in a safe area separated from the driveway; - always thoroughly check around the vehicle before getting in and moving it; - Put your child in the car with you if you’re home alone and need to move the car; - Install rear visibility cameras or sensors on your car to assist in overcoming blind spots and - Educate children about driveway safety.

THERE is no substitute for experience- and that’s what plumber Gordon Cooper brings to his business and his customers. “I am the owner/operator of Gordon Cooper Plumber and the only staff member employed,” he said of his business, which provides plumbing, drainage, LP gas fitting, roofing services and now CCTV sewer inspections to all areas across the Southern Downs. “Being the sole operator, I can offer a more personal and reliable service than any of my other competitors. This means I am more accessible and am able to travel to rural and remote areas and no job is too big or too small. “I have been running my own business for over 27 years in one form or another. My current business format has only been operational for almost two years. This suits both the needs of the Warwick region and my current business situation. “With the main focus being on servicing the needs of the area in a reliable, punctual and professional manner, I ensure every job I complete is to the highest standard. I don’t believe in average, only the best is acceptable. “I have worked this way for many years and enjoy running my own business as it allows me increased flexibility and the freedom to make my own decisions. “Because of this I am able to upgrade and introduce new services to my business when and where they are needed. I have recently purchased CCTV equipment and am now able to perform sewer inspections. “I have also added a pipe locator service which is great for finding utility lines such as telephone, electrical cables, gas pipes or any other mainstream pipes which may be affected by blockages, or just may be in need of some maintenance.” Gordon said his customers seemed to love the service he provided, his experience and professional knowledge. For more information phone Gordon Cooper on 0430 540 438.

NRL Wrap

★★★★★★★★

Takin’ a break By CASEY O’CONNOR WITH under a week until Origin Three, half of the NRL teams will enjoy a well-earned bye as round 17 is reduced to only four games. The rumblings around the impact of Origin on players, clubs and fixtures grow louder with some of the heavyweights including Wayne Bennett weighing into the latest debate. It will be interesting to see if Origin timing comes under review in the coming months. While Origin selection dominates the headlines, there are still four games for tipsters to deal with this weekend. After round 16, the Broncos have taken a handy two-point lead, and with the bye this weekend they could not be in a better position at this point of the season. With Johnathan Thurston given a well-earned week off, the Cowboys winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Sharks. In a game of two halves, the Cowboys blew an 18-point first half lead to go down 24-18 after the Sharks second half scoring spree. Rugby league made its much-anticipated return to Belmore Oval, and the Bulldogs did not disappoint their fans on Monday night handing Melbourne a 20-4 hiding. That is three losses on the trot to the Storm, and they have slipped out of the top four and are in danger of losing touch with the leaders if they cannot turn their form around as teams make their runs to the finals. Round 17 opens on Friday night with the Panthers hosting the Bunnies at the foot of the mountain. The Panthers were convincing winners over a disappointing Wests Tigers outfit last Sunday. With nearly their entire injured roster back on deck, the Panthers showed the class that got them into the semi finals last season. There were plenty of passionate Tigers fans at Leichhardt Oval, but they left disappointed as the Panthers dominated the Tigers right side play. Adding to the Tigers and Blues suffering was confirmation on Monday that Robbie Farah who has been nursing a shoulder injury has a broken hand. He has joined the Origin camp but must surely be an unlikely Origin starter. The clash between Souths and Manly failed to reach lofty heights and what was supposed to be the battle of the brothers was a bit of a fizzer. Manly had their fair share of chances, but it appears the off-field shenanigans may have left some players with contract hangover as some

were definitely not at their best. The Bunnies did enough to get the win at Bluetongue without being sensational. You get the impression Souths are building some momentum, but this week without GI and other Origin players, I think they will struggle at Pepper Stadium. Look for some impressive wins in coming weeks from the Panthers. The Dragons are another team that seem to have fallen in a hole in recent weeks. They have not had a win since round 12 against Cronulla, and this weekend they not only have players on Origin duty but have a host of injuries to contend with and are on the cusp of falling out of the top four. Their players looked fatigued and things do not get any easier for them this week. The Cowboys loss to the Sharks will almost be viewed by some Cowboys supporters as the loss they needed to have. The bubble eventually had to burst, and with JT rested there was no fairytale get of jail finish for the NQlanders. They looked to have the game safely in their keeping at halftime with an 18-point lead, but the Sharks showed plenty of intent from the word go in the second half and pushed hard though the centre upsetting the Cowboys momentum. Cowboys buy of the season Jake Granville may have an appointment with the judiciary after he was cited for a high tackle. This will be a test of depth for both these sides. Paul Green will no doubt have his side working on their defence while Mary McGregor will be working to turn around a three-game losing streak. Perhaps, the Cowboys will be better placed to deal with the loss of their big guns this week. Manly and the Sharks go head to head with the Sharks in a Sunday afternoon clash at Brookvale Oval. Daly Cherry-Evans will be out to prove his selection omission from the Maroons was a mistake and Sea Eagles fans will be hoping Keiran Foran is back to his best after a lacklustre performance against the Eels in round 16. The Sharks were impressive in Townsville, but although the Sea Eagles are swanning at the bottom of the table, I am prepared to give them one more chance here. I cannot see them making any late charge to make the top eight, but if they can get their house in order they have more than enough talent to win games.

★★★★★★★★ ARIES—March 21-April 20 Your competitors are on their toes and you can’t afford to be off guard. This is the time to crank everything up a notch - anything could happen.

On Monday night, the Eels and Tigers lead us into Origin week. It is hard to see this game rising to any great heights - both these teams are battling for a sniff of the top eight. On the other side of the coin, neither is far from the bottom of the ladder and trying to avoid slipping towards the wooden spoon. The Tigers were disappointing against the Panthers. They are a young side who promise plenty but are failing to deliver just when you think they will. They are battling injury problems and half Luke Brooks will come under scrutiny for a head butting incident at the end of the first half of Saturday’s game. The Eels caught plenty of tipsters napping last weekend with their win over the Dragons. Flying winger Semi Radradra showed all of his class crossing for three tries as the game slipped away from the Dragons. The controversy swirling around Foran and the Eels did not translate to the paddock, and the blue and gold army could not have been happier with the performance of their side against one of the in-form teams of the competition. This week the Tigers have Origin players missing and even more injuries to cover. This is a perfect opportunity for the Eels to add another win to the tally. Of course Origin Three - the decider is on everyone’s mind. Both sides go into this game with changes brought on by injuries and suspension. Back at Suncorp and with bragging rights one apiece, I think it will be tough for the Blues to get a win. What we do know is that it will be another corker of a game so whether you are a Blue’s supporter or hoping for a Maroon victory strap yourselves in Wednesday night and hang on. Fingers crossed the result does not hinge on a dodgy decision. That is perhaps the only thing Blues and Maroon supporters will agree on.

TAURUS—April 21-May 22 The keyword is recycle. Sometimes old ideas are the best - perhaps you could put some of them to good use. Self disipline is strong if planning a commonsense diet. GEMINI—May 23-June 21 Important contacts may be made after the weekend. Don’t be shy about promoting your special skills. A relative impresses you with a rare display of compassion and generosity. CANCER—June 22-July 22 Business and friendship may blend surprisingly well. Culture and romance mix nicely too. This a good week for attending concerts or visiting galleries and museums. LEO—July 23-August 22 This week sees you examining at least two different issues. Careerwise, review all evidence before making a pronouncement. The romantic picture brightens, thanks to your partner’s sentimentality. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 Don’t wait too long before making your moves - someone could beat you to the punch. Relationships accent the intellectual side. A bonus may arrive after the weekend. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 Petty jealousies all but disappear from the workplace and harmony returns to the home front too. Assignments become less repetitious. Variety spruces up your personal relationships. SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 Creative activities are spotlighted. This is a prime time for pursuing artistic activities. In matters involving shared finances, caution is critical. Romantic intuition pays off. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 Educational activities increase and travel prospects are bright. A self indulgent streak may surface, so make a special effort to stick to your diet and stay within the budget. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 When it comes to relationships or friends, you excel in the role of counsellor. Your objective approach also lets you stand back and plan your career path. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 Your judgement may be clouded when it comes to evaluating your own performance. The opinions of outsiders are worth considering. Community interests dominate your times through the weekend. PISCES—February 20-March 20 Business and travel blend through the week, but romance may have to take a temporary back seat. Avoid impulses when making purchases. The accent should be on quality and value. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK You are compassionate and sympathetic but you can be too emotional and decisive. A strong positive outside influence could lead you to a career expansion. Poetry and other creative expressions are highlighted.

Local Sport Casey’s tips

Connecting people with the sport they love.

From darling to devil, Nick The

spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com

IT IS that time of the year when sports fanatics burn the midnight oil. Wimbledon is underway and already Australia’s next “big thing” Nick Kyrgios has gone from darling in 2014 after his shock defeat of Raffa to 2015 devil after his diatribe at the chair umpire in his opening game. Days after publicly declaring he “doesn’t even like the sport of tennis” he performed like a trained seal after a line call went against him. The 20-year -old oozes talent, but his attitude and performance this week have alienated many tennis fans. Put simply, it is “not the Aussie way. At the other end of the scale, 17 years after a brash kid from Adelaide caught our attention when he whopped Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt bowed out of Wimbledon after losing his round one game in a fitting five set game. The former Wimbledon champ showed that although his legs and body may be weary, he still has all the tenacity we have come to admire. While Tomic, John Millman and Thanasi Kokkinakis also made it through their first round, there are a host of other Aussie players to keep an eye out for Luke Saville, John Patrick-Smith, Sam Groth, James Duckworth, Marinko Matosevic, and Matt Ebden in the main draw. Seems our tennis stocks are in a healthy state. On the Ladies side of the draw, we will be well represented by Sam Stosur, Casey Dellacqua, Jarmila Gajdosova, Daria Gavrilova and Ajla Tomljanovic. If the thwack of the tennis ball is not your thing, then of course there are a couple of other sports that may have grabbed your attention this week. Did you find yourself channel surfing between the opening game of the Ashes series at Sophia Park Cardiff and the “Decider” - Origin Three at the Gabba? While we are not keen on our tennis players behaving badly, there is a fair chance as we put this edition to print that there will be a bit of sledging at these two grounds. The Poms have already begun the niggle by saying there shouldn’t be any and of course the Origin niggle is just ongoing. Origin games are always top shelf, but I doubt you can ask for more than a “decider” at Suncorp Stadium. I know that whatever the results, it will be another epic battle in the showpiece of rugby league next Wednesday night. -Casey SPORTERS GOLF TONY Steele grabbed a win at Sporters last Sunday ahead of runner-up Paul Byrnes. Rundowns went to birthday boy Ray Thorn who also picked up the Pin shots on the 12th and 17th and Phil Zikan. Ian Anderson had the Best Gross and claimed the Pro Pin going home with meat tray were Bob Watts and Angelo Maugeri. President Ray Thorn was celebrating his birthday in style after he added a win in the $300 raffle to his other booty. Sporters will tee-off at the normal time on Sunday - between 8 and 8.30am. TRIPLES AT HOME TRIPLES last Saturday at the Summit Bowls Club while other club members were tearing up the greens at Tannymorel in the Club Challenge played over Saturday and Sunday. Unfortunately, The Summit representatives did not make it through to the final, going down to Inglewood. Inglewood will now play Goondiwindi who were the winners in the other section in the final of the Club Challenge. Back on home turf, results went the way of

Pistol bay area still a work in progress.

Peter Russell and Brianna Bull from Goondiwindi competing in the Saturday afternoon competition. Atillio Zamprogno, John Shannon and Phil Davis who defeated Trevor Morris, Brian Brown and Keith Mungall 23-19 in a close tussle. Once again, Ray and Zel and Dale have the greens in great shape. The flat decks are welcome, and greens that run true are considered a bonus by players. Bowlers head off this weekend on the much-anticipated Evans head sojourn if you are not booked but would like to join the tourists, contact president Darren. There will be social bowls this Saturday in the absence of the touring group. A reminder also that nominations for the B Grade Singles close on 4 July, and for the Men’s President’s Singles on 10 July. CONSISTENCY A WINNER A CONSISTENT round from Mark McCosker and Dave Williams paid dividends last Saturday when they combined to win the Irish Stableford sponsored by Stanthorpe Meats. The pair finished with a score of 86 points and there was only one hole where they did not record points. Dave has only recently returned to the game and had his best round to date with an individual score of 40 points. Tom Fittock and Nick Milne with 76 points took out second prize. They were also consistent with their scoring, but a second dropped hole on the round was the difference. Mark Hendry took the pin shot at 3/12 and Christina Hamilton had best approach at the ladies’ 17th. Pro-pins were shared. Dylan Barraclough took 1/10: Tom Fittock collecting 5/14 and Rob Reeves close at 9/18. Other pin shots and birdies nest went back in the box. In the run down, Rob Reeves and Keith Allen with 72 points and Bill Pyne and Kay Webb with 65 points collected a ball. There was one match play on the day, Len Leigh advanced to the second round with a twoup win over Aaron Simmers. This weekend we are into July and so play will be in the July monthly medal and putting event sponsored by Mick O’Brien. The round will be played in conjunction with the Dale Mullens Trophy sponsored by Michael Thompson Concreting. Tee off from 11am and the time sheet is on the board. DOUBLE WHAMMY A SUCCESS THE Inglewood Sporting Shooters Association held another double whammy pistol competition over two days and it was once again a resounding success. On Saturday afternoon, the Rimfire competition was won by Tom Donald who edged out runner-up Peter Russell and Karl Rozenbaum. Sunday there were Centrefire and Rimfire matches.

One of the groups waiting to hit off on the first tee of the Holden Scramble at Allora.

In the Rimfire match, Stephanie Dudgeon proved too strong for runner-up Wal Shepherd and Lynne Shepherd who finished in third spot. Tom Donald had more success on Sunday, winning the Centrefire competition ahead of Peter Russell and Jason Lewis who filled the minor placings. This weekend, the club is holding a clay target event followed by an impromptu pistol competition with visitors coming from Brisbane the events. The pistol bay area at the club is still a work in progress with the new pistol bay area shelter, and bays well on their way to completion. NEW BLOOD IN RRR THE newly formatted Red Rooster Rumble is attracting some new blood, and giving the old blood a run for their money. Local fireman Noah Shires is discovering that golf provides the perfect foil for shift work. As a new player, and new member of Warwick Golf Club, he is also a great advertisement for practising and the benefit of taking some lessons from local golf professional Rob McConnell. Last week, Shires tasted success in the RRR. He finished with 23 points, two points ahead of a very inform, relaxed “I-just-got-backfrom-holidays”, Al Matthews (21). A run down ball and nearest to the pin on 11 went to the ever improving Ross Kingston. Stuart Sparksman collected the pin on 13 and Judy Lester at 16. Nearest to the pin winners received a hot chicken voucher from Red Rooster. FAMILIAR NAMES IF YOU watched Sunday’s Channel Nine Sports News, you may have heard Ian Healy signoff saying he was heading off to the Ashes. Not surprising as he is one of the Nine Cricket commentary team, but Heals will be keeping (no pun intended) an eye on the Australian under 19 squad currently on tour in the UK. Prominent in the team is Healy’s son Tom who recently dominated the Cricket Australia Underage Championships with his glove work. The youngster’s fast feet and tidy glove work, was highlighted with a 10-catch performance against Victoria. Of course, Maryvale can boast having the young Healy playing on their ground first. Tom played alongside his famous father last year at the Father Son Charity match. While there is an Aussie, Trevor Bayliss at the helm coaching the Poms in this Ashes series, our Under 19 touring party will be coached by CA high performance coach and former England batsman Graeme Hick. Funny world isn’t it. Hick will be joined by former Queensland fast bowler and Indian bowling coach Joe Dawes. It is highly likely that in the future there could be familiar names in our Aussie teams with news

that Steve Waugh’s 16-year-old son Austin has been selected in the in 17-man squad to represent Australia in premier underage tournament. He dazzled selectors, not with the bat but with a fine spell of bowling during a week-long state championships played in Darwin recently. The young Waugh took 4-8 and finished with an average of 8.9. He will be joined in the squad by Will Sutherland son of Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland. Sutherland hits the crease hard much like his father did, but it was his batting that earned him selection in the elite team. Sutherland has had a taste of first grade cricket in Melbourne and is quickly rising through the ranks. These youngsters all with impeccable cricketing pedigrees ooze talent -it helps a little when you can call on arguably the best keeper in the world or the best batsman or bowler to give you a bit of coaching. However they have earned their chances through hard work and skill. Healy, Waugh, Sutherland - throw in a McDermott a Buchanan and a few others and it will seem like we are be back to the ’80s and ’90s and our cricketing future looks to be in safe hands. SCRAMBLE SUCCESS THE Holden Scramble was played in almost perfect conditions last Sunday at the Allora Golf Club. Twelve teams of golfers contested the fourperson Ambrose event. Players had to contend with a slight wind, but the course was turned out in perfect condition. The visiting team of Hayden Gomez, Steve Morritt, Craig Newmar and Dan Nevin from the Clifton Golf Club took out the event. The group played some outstanding golf shooting a 12 under par score of 56 and a net score of 49.5. Flying the local banner was the team of Kev Harrison, John Ellwood, Neil Chandler and Max Bielefeld who finished runners-up with a very creditable nine under par 59 and net 51.75. In third place was the team of Deacon, Padget, McMahon and Robinson with a net 52. The sports club was lucky to have many wonderful sponsors on board for the day and Golf Club president Lindsay May extends the club’s gratitude to them. On Friday, in preparation for the Holden Scramble 15 golfers contested the Duck Run. Kel Strange emerged the winner with 22 points ahead of Hethe Ramus on 21 who was over from the Sunny Coast to have a hit. Aaron Simpson won both pin shots.

President's Cup - Stanthorpe Gremlins celebrate their win in the 2015 President's Cup. ord, Locke, Carey and Johnson. The mens’ long drive was won by Stuart Finlay and ladies by Sam Hinze. B & K Motors sponsored the Warwick Golf club’s Saturday event -a Single Stableford competition. First prize disappeared over the border with Tenterfield member Henry Kelly. He led the way with a score of 37 points. Runner-up was Evan Pfeffer(36). Run down balls went to Shane McKenzie, Alec Mc Kinlay, Herb Ware and Lennie Williams (35) and Brian Davidson 34. Pins went the way of the winner Henry Kelly at five, Shane McKenzie had success at seven, Geoff Hinze (9), Mick Payne (11), Dion Phillips (13) and new member Shaun Campbell (16). This Saturday play will be for the July monthly medal single stroke event sponsored by Warwick Real Estate. A date for your golfer’s diary - Friday 16 October - The Westpac Warwick Invitational Golf Day (the hundred dollar day) will be held on Friday 16 October. WATTLES WINNING STREAK CONTINUES LIKE football clubs and teams across the state, Wattles and Hawks A grade players observed a minute's silence last weekend prior to the start of their game in honour of Sunshine Coast Intrust player James Ackerman. It was a moving tribute to the young footballer who passed away after being injured in a tackle in the game against Norths Devils a little over a week ago. When play got underway, Wattles continued their charge towards a premiership defence with a hard fought win over Gatton Hawks. The two teams had come together only the week before playing for the Madsen Rasmussen trophy. Wattles led at the half time break 24-10 and snuck home with a win that puts them within striking

distance of the ladder leaders. The win made it a clean sweep for Wattles who were also successful in Reserve Grade (2218); Under 18s (22-20) and Millmerran won the C grade. This weekend Wattles host the Cowboys in all three grades in a local Derby and the Millmerran C grade also play the Cowboys. The Cowboys will be keen to turn their fortunes around after their loss to Pittsworth at Fr Ranger Oval last Saturday night. In front of a big crowd, the Cowboys lost by only a two-point margin in a very tight game. Captain coach Matt Gainey said after the game he was disappointed with the loss with simple errors costing the team the game. The Cowboys have some injury concerns but need to put wins on the board in the coming weeks to assure their place in the top five. The Cowboys Reserve Grade had a more successful game. They continued their solid form with a 40-10 win, however the Under 18s were also beaten 32-10. Warwick C Grade won 128. Opening the day’s play was a Ladies league tag game which proved popular with spectators. Pittsworth won the game 12-8. GREMLINS ADD PRESIDENTS CUP THE Gremlins scored a 54-20 win over the Tenterfield Tigers at Rugby League Park last Saturday, and in doing so added the the President’s Cup which was held by the Tigers to their trophy cabinet this season. It was a tough game for the Tigers who began the game with a reduced bench and when they lost Anthony Thomas with a shoulder injury early in the game, they were forced to play with 14 men.

Around the grounds WARWICK EAST BOWLS CLUB THERE were no Red Rooster bowls last week because of the rain. On Saturday and Sunday our club participated in the District club challenge in Stanthorpe. Our representatives were: Singles - R. Philps; Pairs - D. Sullivan and N. Wickham; Triples - B. Gibson, V. Nelson and N. Farmer; Fours - E. Diery, G. Carson, B. Lee and N. Hassum. Our win record was: against Goondiwindi - Fours only; against Tenterfield - Singles, Pairs and Triples; against Texas Singles, Pairs and Fours; against Tannymorel - Singles only. Our best result therefore was in the Singles, where R. Philps won three of his four games. On Saturday, there will be social bowls as usual. Play starts at 1pm. with names in by 12.30pm. councillor and was the current treasurer. He will be sorely missed. RIP Frank. Last Thursday morning, there was one game of B grade singles with 31 ends being played in rainy conditions. V. Gray d K. There will be no bowls at the Cross today Thursday 2 July due to Frank’s wake. Coming up this Sunday 5 July will be social mixed bowls along with some of the men’s singles games which were postponed from last Thursday.

Although the Gremlins have picked up injuries to some of their more prominent players in recent games, they were too strong for the Tigers. The visitors led 24-6 at half time and dominated the game early in the second half to take a commanding lead. Ben Staley had an outstanding game for the Gremlins, and it was no surprise he was the Players Player. Brendan Minns said he was proud of the effort of his players under difficult circumstances. Jim Loneragan was a standout for the Tigers who this weekend must regroup for their game against Wallangarra. The 2014 premiers were on the end of a loss last weekend. They were beaten 30-22 by the determined and much improved Wallangarra Rams side. The game was in the balance until a late try to the Rams gave them a winning margin. Despite winning back to back premierships the Cutters are struggling for number this season and have also been hit hard by injuries. Rams player Coedie Tandy proved a handful for his former club slicing through the defence and causing headaches every time he touched the ball. The task does not get any easier for the defending premiers who take on the Gremlins at Sullivan Oval on Saturday. Players at all BRL games observed a minute's silence in memory of James Ackerman prior to their games. The Tenterfield Ladies League Tag side continued their outstanding winning streak notching up another win on Saturday against the Gremlinettes. The margin is closing however with the scores 10-4 in a thrilling game. In the Ladies game in Killarney the Wallangarra Rams claimed a 24-10 win in their clash with Killarney. KILLARNEY CUP MEETING SUCCESS WARWICK Turf Club hosted the popular and successful Killarney Cup race meeting last Saturday. The meeting attracted good field and a good crowd to Allman Park. Storm Magic trained by Jackie Crompton and ridded by Amy Van Der Sanden won the Cup. It is the galloper’s third country Cup having already claimed the Kilcoy and Tara Cups on her way to this win. Connections are now considering a start in the Warwick Cup for the mare.
