If a service station cannot provide evidence of criminal behaviour or intent – for example, if someone forgot to pay – the incident is now handled as a civil debt, with the responsibility on the service station to contact the driver and seek payment. But the results of this year’s parliamentary inquiry into fuel drive-offs is due in December. Victoria Police has recommended fuel stations adopt pre-pay systems to address the problem but this could cost an average fuel station around $20,000 to implement, according to a VACC report.

“That may not be a lot of money to Coles and Woolworths but to independent operators that could be crippling,” Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Geoff Gwilym said. “This impost would make it yet harder for them to compete with these big businesses.” APCO is a chain of independent petrol stations, with outlets throughout the state including Cranbourne, Geelong, Epping, Ballarat, Bairnsdale, and Mildura, among many others.

“They are one of the worst. “People fill their tank and they don’t just get $10 worth because when they do a drive-off they want to get everything they can.” Mr Anderson, who is forced to cover the loss out of his own pocket, said he was “infuriated” by the high level of drive-offs, exacerbated by policy changes in Victoria Police’s response to the crime. In July 2013, police stopped investigating fuel drive-offs unless it could be proven the car was stolen or had stolen number plates.

AN INDEPENDENT fuel retailer who oversees more than 20 sites across Victoria said his two Cranbourne stores were the worst hit by petrol drive-offs. APCO Service Station director Peter Anderson, who owns a petrol station in both Cranbourne North and Cranbourne West, said petrol driveoffs had increased considerably over the last two years – with his two Casey outlets copping the worst of it. He said drive-offs at the two Cranbourne stores, one on Narre Warren Road and one on Dandenong-Hastings

Road, occurred roughly three times a week, more than any of the other APCO outlets state-wide. On average each petrol drive-off cost the business around $80, amounting to roughly $240 of lost income a week for the Cranbourne stores. It comes as the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) announced fuel stations across the state were losing up to $20 million in revenue each year. “It is higher than anywhere else in our network,” Mr Anderson said of his Cranbourne outlets.

Stable fit for fillies By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

THE CRANBOURNE Turf Club is predicting their new on-course stabling will be completed as early as December this year. After 20 years of deliberations the dedicated training centre has received $1 million towards the new $6 million on-course thoroughbred stabling from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund (VRIF) which will house up to 240 horses. Minister for racing Martin Pakula visited the centre on Wednesday to officially announce the long-awaited funding and said the demand for on-course stabling was very high at the centre. “With around 800 horses using the complex each day but with only 462 tie stalls on-site, trainers are required to share stalls,” he said. The upgrade includes stable sites with separate tie-up stalls and a mezzanine floor with a viewing balcony, 10 horse walkers at each site along with tack rooms, sand rolls, feed stores, medical and bathroom facilities. The State Government is also investing more than $26,000 under the VRIF to expand Cranbourne Harness Racing Training at the centre. Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera MP said it was great to see expansions taking place at both the thoroughbred and harness racing training centres. “The harness centre will host up to 54 horses and 12 trainers and will be a significant boost for the racing industry in the region, which already generates more $375 million and supports more than 3700 jobs in outer Melbourne,” he said. The state funding will support the construction of four new stables

Briefly Machete and knife used in home invasion TWO men armed with a machete and a knife have threatened a Blind Bight man and demanded he pay a debt. The offenders knocked on the door of the Fishermans Drive property about 9.30pm on Saturday and demanded money from the occupant that they said was owed. They then entered the house and took a laptop computer. The offenders were unknown to the two occupants of the house, who were uninjured in the incident. There will also be improved animal welfare and the addition of five small day paddocks for post-race recuperation and a hot water wash area to reduce exposure to the cold over winter. The centre already boasts a horse walking machine, an equine swimming pool and a communal work shed and local horse trainer Greg Eurell of Greg Eurell Thoroughbred Training – Cadet Lodge said the stables would be the best Christmas gift ever. “It’ll be a big boost to our business – being off-course has a big impact an extra burden on the economics of the whole exercise and logistically

it’s very awkward,” Mr Eurell said. With his base on Craig Road it’s currently a two-hour exercise to transport the horses just 12 minutes down the road. “For the horses themselves I’m sure they’ll obtain a lot of benefit from just being here, they are going to get a lot more downtime to recuperate and rest and economically for us as a business – we’ll be able to reduce our work hours in the morning by at least an hour and half,” he said. Training 60 horses a day, Mr Eurell was one of the original pioneers for on-course stabling at Cranbourne and said he had no doubt the model would work seamlessly. “I think they’ve got the model and location of the stables right – as a training complex this is one of the

best in Australia, if not the southern hemisphere and I’ve been to a lot of training complexes in Australia and nothing equals this,” he said. Mr Eurell is also looking forward to overseeing his operation from the sky. “We are going to get viewing towers as well, which means we’ll be able to stand in our own complex and watch the horses train – we’ll just walk down the stairs have our own stripping bays and be able to see the horses pull up and the riders. “Everything’s just going to work so systematically and easy, it’ll be fantastic,” he said. Construction of the stables is set to start in late July.

ENDANGERED species were let loose at Cranbourne Library. More than 50 primary school children got to pat and hold some of Australia’s most treasured reptiles and birds on Tuesday. Frogs, owls, snakes, lizards, fruit bats, and a saltwater crocodile, quoll, turtle and iguana were out among the books with the help of Wild Action zoo. Youth services librarian Sarah Litchfield said it was the first time the library had been filled with scaly wildlife. “It was quite a funny sight, we had one man who thought it was a wild snake that had got loose and came inside, Ms Litchfield said. The library’s school holiday program free event was as fun and exciting as it was educational. Ms Litchfield said she thought the children learned a lot. “Information about each endangered species

Man killed by release By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A BEREAVED Narre Warren family has blamed a “broken” mental health system for the death of a father of two who was killed by a freshly-released acute-care patient. On Monday, the 52-year-old victim was found by State Coroner John Olle to have died from multiple injuries and immersion in a home swimming pool in Narre Warren on 25 January 2009. He was described by Mr Olle as a “bloke’s bloke” and a “hands-on father” who enjoyed a drink and loved to

fish and cook. The perpetrator - whose name was omitted in Mr Olle’s report - was a work colleague who killed the victim during a weekend drinking session. He had been released as an involuntary patient from Casey Hospital on 16 January after taking his parents hostage in a seven-hour siege two weeks earlier. After the finding, the victim’s widow said she had pushed for the inquest because she didn’t want another family to go through the same torment.

“My husband was in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong person,” she said. “It could happen to anyone unless we see change. Our system is broken and it needs to be fixed.” Mr Olle’s inquest focused on the killer’s medical management but he emphasised his role was not to lay blame. In his report, Mr Olle referred to the man making threats to kill beforehand, his frightened parents intending to take out intervention orders, and his instability and intimidation in the ward.

Two days before the fatal assault, a case manager interviewed the man and judged him to be threatening in manner but not a risk of harm to others, Mr Olle said. “(His) hallucinations and delusions were still present and real to him.” Mr Olle said the care by Monash Health staff was “not unreasonable or inappropriate” in the circumstances but “hindsight has revealed poor clinical decisions were made”. He recommended establishing therapeutic recovery or step-down units for acute-care patients before releasing

them into the community. Mr Olle also recommended access to specialist forensic psychiatrists - the absence of which made clinical decision making “extremely difficult” in this case. The perpetrator is serving eight years’ jail for the victim’s manslaughter - although he is eligible for parole this year. Meanwhile, the victim’s wife is now a single parent bringing up two daughters.

Eyes of the tiger shine by night troduced into Wilsons Promontory in Victoria between 1908 and 1915. He said the animal has visited Cranbourne and surrounding areas more than once. Mr Moss said that there had been recorded sightings on Fisheries Road in Devon Meadows, Thompsons Road in Cranbourne and around the Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne. “They are very shy and are mainly out at night. “There have been alleged sightings on the Mornington Peninsula, Gippsland, the Otways, Portland, the Dandenongs and the Grampians,” Mr Moss said. Pearcedale resident of 36 years Brian Morris is 99 per cent sure he saw a Tasmanian tiger about two years ago on Thompsons Road in Lyndhurst. “I noticed the stripes and was fascinated. At the time I didn’t know

Male and female Tasmanian tigers at Hobart Zoo some time before 1921. Picture: Wikipedia what it was,” Mr Morris said. Mr Morris travels along Thompsons Road every Monday 5.20am to get leftover bread for his cows and one morning he noticed the stripy animal as he slowed down to the enter the roundabout. “It walked across the road and entered a drive way, I had a fairly good look at it with my headlights on - it

THOUGHT to be extinct for more than 75 years, the Tasmanian tiger may actually still be creeping around the region in the dead of night. And for some Cranbourne and Hampton Park residents the unanswered question surrounding the Tasmanian tiger’s fate isn’t as silly as it sounds. According to Tasmanian tiger independent researcher Michael Moss, the striped marsupial is still lurking in the region’s backyards. Mr Moss, who grew up in Cranbourne South, said extensive surveys in Tasmania show that “scientifically, it’s not possible for the Tasmanian tiger to still be alive“ on the island. “I believe they still exist only on mainland Australia. The last one died in September 1936 in Tassie,” he said. As part of an eight-part television

series on different mysteries around the world, Mr Moss was interviewed by UK independent journalist Alex Hannaford for a documentary called Strange World by Off the Fence Productions. “Alex interviewed me in March this year and I took them through documents at the public records office in North Melbourne,” Mr Moss said. Having studied and filmed the shy creature for 20 years, Mr Moss’s avid interest in the tiger’s whereabouts has lead him to his own theory. “I filmed a Tasmania tiger in November 1998 in the Strzelecki Ranges, Gippsland, and I have no doubt that it was a Tasmanian tiger,” he said. Mr Moss believes the thylacine was in danger of extinction and would have been a prime candidate for introduction into mainland Australia many years ago. “My theory is the tigers were in-

IT doesn’t matter how Cr Mick Morland dresses up the culture centre – Bunjil. The City of Casey is spending ratepayers’ money – not his money or fellow councillors’ money (a survey of 300 people within the City of Casey hardly constitutes a significant survey of the number of ratepayers in the City of Casey – News, 2 July). Yes, it will look fantastic, but the money would be better spent in the City of Casey supporting worthwhile projects. Bunjil is an egotistical satisfaction of people who are full of their own self-importance. As a side issue, maybe Cr Mick Morland would like to explain why the average wage for the City of Casey employees for 2015/16 is $91,978.62, for 1019 employees (source, draft budget for 2015/16)? Arvo Talvik, Cranbourne.

I REFER to the letter “Bogan Screen Diet” (Berwick News, 2 July). I also agree with Adrian Karpish re: lack of quality movies at Village. I presume Village did a survey of the people who shop at Fountain Gate, which is probably why. Fortunately there is the Cameo at Belgrave, but that is not always convenient for people, especially when we have a movie theatre virtually around the corner. Intelligent people are moving into the Casey and Cardinia area daily. Time to improve Village, you need to cater for the over-40s to over-80s age group. Helen Drummond, Berwick.

Matter of difference CONGRATULATIONS to Councillor Rosalie Crestani (News, 2 July) for her stand against ‘same-sex marriage’. Not many people are prepared, like her, to speak out against what God has so greatly condemned in the Bible – namely, homosexuality. What matters in this issue is not so much what people say on Facebook or anywhere else, but what God, our Creator, says. There is, in fact, no such thing as “samesex marriage”. True marriage is, and always will be, only between a man and a woman. Anything else is a perversion of God’s commands. Bruce Rayment, Cranbourne East.

WITH reference to the letter (Need for Bunjil, News, 2 July), we refute the statements of the mayor, Cr Mick Morland. 1. This Precinct is an unwanted structure which is being forced on the community without proper funding (only $10 million funded by the Federal Government ) without taking into account of where the balance of $115 million will come from. An email received from the Manager Legal Services(Rob Pedder) has stated that under the Local Government Act the council can undertake borrowings to fund its operations or capital works. This funding/ borrowing will fall on all ratepayers. Note: An email to the Mayor on June 16, asking why was an amount of $35,774,000 for Bunjil Place being budgeted in the Draft Budget? Email from Rob Pedder (Manager Legal Sevices) has said that the estimated construction expenditure is $25.5 million. Why? This is being added to the rates. The ex-mayor Geoff Ablett has clearly indicated that the cost of this building will not result in rate increases.

Berwick netball, Edwin Flack Reserve. 140501 Another misuse of ratepayers’ money. 2. Statistics show that the City of Casey has a population of 283,000 and as the Mayor has said that the council has engaged an independent research firm which conducted a telephone survey of 300 people as well as an analysis of 200 online responses of residents living in Casey, 82 per cent of respondents agreed for a need of a cultural and community precinct in south-east Melbourne. This is a blatant stupidity on the part of council to go ahead with this project with just 82 per cent of the 500 people when Casey has a population of 283,000. When we asked for proof of this survey, council was not able to comply. 3.There are three council offices and many libraries operating, surely there is no need for such an extravagant building to be constructed to house new offices and a library. Waste of ratepayers’ monies. 4. Late last year we had asked this question of council if this building was to go ahead what will be the running cost of this precinct? No response. Dunstan Girton and Louis Kotsiras, On behalf of the Residents and Ratepayers of the City of Casey, Hampton Park.

Space for debate THANKS to Casey mayor Mick Morland for his comments and letter about Bunjil Place (News, 2 July). Thanks also to Ms Florin Bordel for her important comments and letter on this project. I have raised this issue during public question time at Casey Council. I am still not in receipt of a satisfactory answer. The important matter at hand now will be for Casey Council to decide what will happen to any vacant office space and land following the completion and opening of Bunjil Place? This is what must now be considered. Will any vacant space and land be handed over to Westfield Farmers or commercial develop-

Re: Rainbow of pain No need to attack the councillor for simply having a view ... good on her for being honest ... I bet a few other councillors are hiding their true feelings, and just running the populist line to get re-elected. We don’t all have to agree, and should not be attacking people when they have differing opinions ... just accept it for what it is ... an opinion, and move on. Mario, via web.

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS ers? Or will council have the wisdom to use any vacant space and land for community services and social housing in Casey? Casey Council should now look at how a ‘Futures Committee of ratepayers and residents could better inform councillors about options and challenges impacting on the south-eastern suburbs. A Futures Committee would be an important mechanism - an ideas forum for future policy development. Public question time at Casey does not provide a forum for ideas. Many of Casey’s councillors are also committed to conservative views as evidenced by the number of councillors who regularly stand as candidates for political parties during State and Federal elections. Casey is currently hostage to right-wing politics. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

A kind of courage RE: “Rainbow of Pain” (News, 2 July), Cr Crestani’s stand against same-sex marriage is to be applauded, she is not a bigot, she is somebody who has the courage of her convictions. Homosexuality has nothing to do with genetics, it is freedom of choice and the motivates are many and varied. History is witness to the failure of many civilisations who practised sodomy and history has a habit of repeating itself. What in our society has changed? The answer is: The morality and values of the Western World. Public opinion in the ’60s and ’70s was influenced by popular culture, so it is today. Judeo-Christian principals, honesty, family values, respect for the state, honesty and loyalty have all been eroded, often beyond recognition. G.C.Edgar, Berwick.

Syringe suburbs By GEORGIA WESTGARTH DISPOSING of more than 10 syringes a week is just a part of the job for one local gardener. Noble Park resident of three years Eric Simmons has become immune to what most people find startling. “I find them in piles on front lawns, chucked over fences, on footpaths, under bushes and in shopping centre car parks and gutters,” Mr Simmons said. Covering suburbs from Frankston to Ferntree Gully, Mr Simmons said syringes were everywhere. “I started noticing them in the last five years, but the past 12 to 18 months they’ve really increased to the point where I’m seeing them more than I see rubbish on the ground, you don’t need to go out searching for them they’re right in front of you,” he said. After three years in the business, Mr Simmons said he didn’t envisage the gravity of the problem. “It wasn’t something I thought I’d have to do when I signed up, I didn’t think I’d have to deal with syringes at this high rate,” he said. Mr Simmons said he found around the same number of capped and uncapped syringes and added that didn’t make his job any easier. “It’s not a nice feeling having to pick them up, even when I know it’s capped and I have gloves, it’s still not a good feeling to touch- the day I started I would very rarely see them, probably once every four months, now it’s daily,” he explained.

A used syringe was found at a shopping centre car park in Lynbrook on Saturday 4 July. 141391 Having worked in Melbourne’s inner city suburb of Prahran, Mr Simmons said Dandenong’s syringe problem was at the same level as Prahran’s. “I find them when I’m not working as well; 12 months ago there was a few in the gutter at Coles in Noble Park- they are right across Dandenong but Noble Park is the worst,” he said. A necessity much the same as his lawn mower, his very own sharps container is stored in his truck and disposed of every six to eight weeks. He said the problem in Lynbrook was slowly growing. “I was in Lynbrook and pulled up to mow a client’s lawn, and within three metres on the side of the road I found a syringe,” he said. Concerned for children’s safety, Mr Simmons said in some cases users would destroy the plastic sharps bins to get the used ones out. He said the way out was to see more steel bins installed around town. “I very rarely see the steel bins- even if the council bolted them onto power poles, but it’s

Thursday, 9 July, 2015 Page 7

cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

hard to know if they’d use them, but we won’t know if we don’t do anything- you can’t stop them doing it, but can provide places for them to be safely disposed of. “I know they go on about the ice epidemic but the syringe problem is still here,” he said. According to Mr Simmons, Dandenong and Springvale are syringe hotspots with businesses copping the brunt just as much as residential homes and estates. “They’ll go in to a secluded area and shoot up and throw them over the fence. I have been servicing a Dandenong business for 12 months which has syringes thrown over their fence on a weekly basis, which is a worry for customers walking through the outdoor stock,” he said. Mr Simmons believes a mix of education in schools and steel bins are the only way to combat the growing problem. “I am concerned Lynbrook is going to end up like Dandenong and Frankston and education is the key,” he said.

Fireworks blaze A MAN has been refused bail for a string of offences including setting off a hedge fire with a home-made firework lobbed into a Cranbourne West street. Matthew Butler, representing himself at a court bail hearing on Monday, had allegedly arrived unannounced at a home garage gathering with an unknown male and female - and a firework described by a witness as “looking like a coconut with a long piece of string” on 15 January. Police informant Constable Jack Tuohy told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that Butler lit the string, then licked his fingers in an attempt to extinguish the

fuse. He then pushed open the garage door, and threw the explosive out onto Arena Rise. Witnesses then heard two loud explosions and observed smoke filling the garage, the court was told. Police observed a hedge alight, as well as shrapnel and debris that had struck a car parked in a neighbour’s driveway. Butler was arrested outside Springvale RSL and charged with criminal damage, reckless conduct endangering life and setting off fireworks. The court was told Butler had been intercepted and remanded by police on Sunday night after being observed driving around a

Monahans Road roundabout on the wrong side and without indicating. Butler couldn’t produce a valid driver's licence, and was found with a silver knuckle-duster in his pants. Butler also faced a charge of shop-stealing a cap from a Berwick servo on 11 March, and offences for allegedly attempting to buy i-Phones using false identification at a Ferntree Gully store on 30 April. The applicant had supplied police with two erroneous addresses in Hampton Park- one was a vacant house, the other had been drug-raided by police two weeks earlier.

The occupant of the latter house told police that Butler was not welcome to stay, the court was told. Butler told the court he had lined up a Dandenong home, but magistrate Barry Schultz was concerned “there’s no one here that can attest to that fact”. Mr Schultz noted Butler’s show-cause position, ongoing offending, lack of a fixed address, a history of failing to turn up in court, multiple arrest warrants and a four-month suspended sentence “hanging over your head”. Butler was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 July.

POLICE have released the images of a man and a woman who allegedly broke into a Hampton Park house last month and then fled when they were disturbed by the occupant. The victim was in the bedroom when he heard a noise from the front of the house about 10am on Thursday 11 June and went to investigate. When he found the pair of offenders in one of the other rooms, the woman said “hi” to the occupant before she and the male fled the property. Nothing was stolen during the break-in. Anyone with any information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or contact Senior Constable Steve Laughlin at Narre Warren police station on 9705 3111. 1187118-KC24-15

Jared went on to finish VCE and university, he ran in the Queens Baton Relay, trekked the Kokoda Track, ran his own sports store in Mornington and participated in numerous charity bike rides. “He had severe injuries but was determined to overcome them and that he sure did. “He still had brain damage, severe weakness in the left side of his body and academically he couldn’t do all the things he wanted to do but TRAG was his passion,” she said. Ms Colabufalo remembers her brother coming home after a TRAG presentation beaming with happiness telling her, ‘if I’ve saved one life today it was worth it’.

“I’ve taken on his role speaking with TRAG, I tell his story and then add the second unbelievable tragedy, I felt that I wanted to keep telling his story and I think that he would have wanted that,” Ms Colabufalo said. The TRAG team consists of police, fire, ambulance and SES services as well as victims of road trauma and the families of victims. “We provide a graphic and emotional account of how teenage road trauma impacts victims, families, friends, schools and communities,” Ms Colabufalo said. PERSONAL and confronting stories of road trauma will hit Casey secondary schools this year. Presenting to schools on the Mornington Peninsula for more than 16 years, the Teenagers Road Accident Group (TRAG) was approached by several schools in Casey to deliver its first-hand stories to year 12 students. Road safety advocate Jonelle Colabufalo joined TRAG last year with a heart wrenching purpose to continue to tell her brother’s tragic story. Jared Dunscombe was participating in a charity bike ride when he was killed by a passing truck. At 31 years old, Jared had already defied doctors when he survived a car accident in Dandenong at seven years old. Ms Colabufalo calls her brother the family’s miracle boy, “he was given no chance to survive” after his first accident. “Jared was rushed to Dandenong Hospital and then airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital. “Afterwards the surgeon said they couldn’t do anything because his injuries were too severe,” Ms Colabufalo said. After emergency brain surgery Jared was put into an induced coma where he stayed for three and a half weeks before his life support was turned off. “He started to breathe on his own and it was turned back on, Jared’s life was pretty remarkable. “They said he wouldn’t be

In grip of ice By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AN ICE-USER allegedly found unconscious in the drivers’ seat of a stolen car in Cranbourne North while on bail is in the grip of a “terrible tragedy”, according to a Dandenong magistrate at a bail hearing on Monday. The 23-year-old Langwarrin man had been in custody since found by police in the stolen 1993 Nissan Skyline parked in the middle of Thompsons Road about 4.26am on Sunday, a police summary states. He was breathing but unconscious, slumped over the steering wheel. When roused, he became aggressive at paramedics and had to be sedated, police allege. Police believe a brand-new cordless angle grinder in its box found in the car as well as an Armani watch found on the man and $235 cash were all stolen items.

At the time, the man was on three counts of bail including for trafficking, possessing and using ice. In the ambulance, the applicant admitted to using a quantity of GHB, and had previously told police he had an ice addiction for the past six years. The defence lawyer argued if the man wasn’t granted bail, he was likely to spend more time in remand custody than his likely sentence. The lawyer said her client, who had no prior convictions, had never been on a drug-therapy program. The applicant had scheduled a CREDIT bail assessment on 15 July to support him in his substance abuse issues. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Joshua Diemar questioned what supports were in place for the applicant leading up to the assessment next week. He said the man was an “unacceptable risk to the community” due to being suspected

of driving while under the influence of an illicit drug. The applicant was also an unacceptable risk of re-offending and continuing to use drugs, Sen Const Diemar said. Magistrate Barry Schultz said it was a “terrible tragedy” that the man was in the grip of ice. Mr Schultz took into account the man’s youth as the principal factor for granting bail, as well as a stable residence and lack of prior convictions. He placed the man on bail conditions including a night curfew, tri-weekly reporting to police, a ban on driving or using drugs of dependence and to remain at a fixed address. “You’ve now seen the inside of a custody centre,” Mr Schultz told the applicant. “I’m sure you’ve discovered it’s not a pleasant place.” The applicant was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 15 July.

Woman’s house robbed while she was sleeping A HAMPTON Park woman has alleged her house was robbed while she was asleep inside. The woman woke up after she heard footsteps around 8.30pm on Monday 29 June and noticed lights had been turned on in the house. She didn’t see anyone inside or outside

her home but soon noticed several electrical items had been taken from another bedroom and the lounge room. Anyone with any information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

THE law that applies to the assets and income of a deceased person depends on which state or territory of Australia the deceased person lived in when they died. Information on the Australian Tax Office site explains tax responsibilities only. Those who want to find more information about the inheritance laws that apply in states or territories should contact the Public Trustee Office. Someone who has been appointed as an executor or administrator of the estate of a deceased person will be responsible for managing the deceased estate’s tax affairs as well as carrying out (executing) the terms of the deceased person’s will and complying with the relevant inheritance laws, where there is no will. The information applies equally to an administrator. When the assets of a deceased estate are distributed, a special rule applies that allows any capital gain or loss made on a CGT asset to be disregarded if the asset passes to the executor, to a beneficiary or from the executor to a beneficiary. However, if an executor sells an asset of the deceased estate and then distributes the proceeds to the beneficiaries, the sale is subject to the normal rules and CGT applies. When a person dies, their superannuation is paid to their beneficiaries, either directly or as part of their estate. Lump sum death benefits paid to dependants are generally tax free. The taxation of lump sum death benefits paid to non-dependants and death benefit income streams depend on a number of factors. A death benefit termination payment is an employment termination payment (ETP) made by an employer after the death of an employee. How the payment is taxed depends on whether or not the beneficiary is a dependant of the deceased person, and the total amount of payments received.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Workers’ job flight By CASEY NEILL WORKERS at Nissan’s Dandenong South parts warehouse will fly to Japan in a bid to keep their jobs. Joe Doherty and his colleagues found out at 1pm on Friday 3 July that Nissan would outsource to CEVA Logistics. “I’m 58 so I don’t know how I’ll get another job,” he said. Mr Doherty said workers felt so strongly they were considering a trip to Honda head office in Japan to confront management about the decision and ask them to reverse it. There’ll be about 40 redundancies at Dandenong South and 58 across Australia. “This is how strong we feel about saving our jobs,” shop steward Judi Blackwell said. “This is not part of the automotive industry collapse. Warehousing is alive and strong. “We’ve met all our KPIs. We always meet our targets. “This is about Nissan outsourcing for cheaper labour.” Ms Blackwell said some staff had worked at the warehouse for 25 years. “They’re currently releasing the new Navara. Even right now the people are out there on the floor working so hard to get to the dealers the parts that are required for this new car,” she said. “While the people are out there working hard they’re outsourcing. “None of these people will find another job. There are no jobs in the south-east.

Judi Blackwell outside the warehouse. 141394 “We hope that they’ll reconsider. That’s the best case scenario. We’re going to give it a shot.” Rob Classon has worked at the warehouse for six years. “We work hard to get the product out for the customers and this is how they treat us - throwing us on the s*** pile.” “I’m 48 this year and it’s going to be tough for me to go out and find another job.” Ngoc Tran has a seven-week-old baby and Alistair Gayles spent six years in casual employment before securing a

full-time position at Nissan. “It’s as busy as it’s ever been here,” he said. “We want to stay loyal. We want to work at Nissan.” Narre Warren man Alex Plain said most employees had a lease car deal with the company. He only recently sold his car to take up the offer and convinced his partner to do the same. “Now we’ve got to go out and buy new cars,” he said. “This job meant everything to me. “It leaves me back in the rat race like

a lot of other Australians who can’t get full-time work. “It’s too many people competing for the same work.” “Things are just getting tougher.” Shop steward Tom Costello, a Nissan employee for four years, said CEVA was unlikely to maintain the warehouse. “The operations will probably move to one of their facilities. I think it will probably head to the western suburbs,” he said. In a statement, Nissan Australia said the change followed a parts warehousing and logistics operations review. It concluded Nissan could only improve its competitiveness in these areas through significant investments in distribution and IT infrastructure, and property upgrades to meet increasingly stringent safety, technical and environmental compliance. But Mr Doherty said management knew long ago that improvement works were needed and didn’t spend the money. The statement also said Nissan had offered staff assistance relating to reemployment outside Nissan. The announcement came less than three months after the company said it would continue to manufacture parts in Dandenong “well beyond 2020” and that growing demand for parts would lead to more jobs. Workers will stage a rally at Nissan, corner Frankston-Dandenong Road and Quality Drive, Dandenong South, on Saturday 11 July at 10.30am.

Dip in for Yumi food By CASEY NEILL YUMI’S is not just a dip brand - it’s a man. Benjamin Friedman founded the business in a Ripponlea fresh fish shop more than 20 years ago. The Hebrew pronunciation of Benjamin is with a Y in place of the J. “The Hungarians call Benjamins Yumi for short,” his brother and Yumi’s CEO Michael Friedman said. “He was in the front of the shop selling kosher fish. There was wholesale at the back. “When the guy at the back of the shop moved out I bought in and became partner.” That was in 1992. Benjamin and Michael’s grandfather bought a Canadian fish business that specialised in mayonnaise-based dips. “We went overseas and we learnt how to make the mayonnaise and mix it with fish and make a dip out of that,” Mr Friedman said. “We built a small smokehouse and started making fish dips. “We sold that in our shop and we sold that in kosher shops in our area and then kosher shops in Sydney, and that’s how it started.” Today Yumi’s employs more than 100 people in Hallam and there are plans to double its size in the next four to five years. The company moved into supermarkets and introduced vegetable dips - still manufacturing in the back of the fish shop. “We couldn’t fit in the shop anymore so we hired a warehouse around the corner just to be able to store things,” Mr Friedman said. Yumi’s built a factory in Cheltenham in 1999 but the company grew so fast that within a year it rented a factory across the road to store raw ingredients. “Then about 2006, 2007 we bought another building across the road from

the main factory and we moved the offices and despatched to that site and we turned the whole factory into manufacturing,” he said. “The business grew and grew until we decided we couldn’t keep working from three places on one street.” The company bought its Wedgewood Road site in 2011. Yumi drove its transformation from an empty shell to custom-built plant in five months. “That would take a normal builder 18 months,” Mr Friedman said. “He’s a pusher, he likes to get things done. That’s his motto. That’s how we’ve grown. “We’re very close to outgrowing the site.” He never thought the business would reach the heights it has. “We’ve always pushed to take it to the next level,” Mr Friedman said. “But did we have this vision? No, probably not this big. “Today we sit around a board room talking about strategy but back then it wasn’t like that, you just got up and did it. “We just pushed very hard, got the contracts and did it.” He said the key was “making real dips like you make them at home” instead of flavoured cream cheese. “We saw a niche in the market,” he said. Other salmon dips were made with 80 per cent cream cheese. They used 50 per cent fish. “Nobody else does that,” he said. “There’s no fillers. There’s no breadcrumbs. “I get phone calls from flavouring companies saying ‘I could sell you this flavour or that flavour’. “We don’t use flavours, we use kitchen ingredients. “All the ingredients you’ve got at home in your pantry we use here, we just buy them in bulk.”

Shaun and Marcus check for quality. 140986 Pictures: GARY SISSONS All products are gluten free, dairy free and kosher. “We don’t use any dairy. In kosher you use separate kitchens for dairy and separate kitchens for meat. You can’t mix those two,” he said. “If we had dairy you couldn’t use any of my products in a meat kitchen. “And kosher dairy is quite involved. High level you have a supervisor at the farms. “We would love to because one of the biggest dips is tzatziki and French onion and spring onion. “At the moment we don’t even play in that market. “If we were going to do that we would have to open another factory across the road. “We’ve thought about it a lot but we haven’t done it.” The next growth area for Yumi’s is not in dips. “We’re doing the vegetarian bites and were looking to expand in other areas in chilled foods,” Mr Friedman said. “It’s growing and we’ve got a lot of new product development.” The business was growing so fast in 2013 that the Friedmans decided it was too big to remain a family business. “We sold off a lot of it to a private

Hussain packs products. 140986 equity fund. We’re now owned partly by the Freidman family still - which is me and my brother - and partly by this equity fund, like a partnership,” he said. “But they’re not involved. They’re in Sydney and we see them once a month for a board meeting.” The fund injected money and set up structures that were previously absent from the business, like an operations manager and a chief financial officer. “We work well together,” he said. But the Friedmans still own and run Ripponlea Fish Shop. “My mum sits at the cash register and I’ve got four or five staff,” Mr Friedman said. “I drop in every morning. “The shop sells mainly fresh fish. They do a lot of fried fish and they sell all the products that are made here.”

Fresh look for business network SOUTH East Business Networks is no more - it’s now known simply as SEBN. The group this month unveiled its rebranding, including the new name and a fresh logo. SEBN started as a manufacturing network group in 1992, became part of the City of Greater Dandenong in 1998, and has grown to be the longest-running network provider for south-east businesses. Its focus is ‘tomorrow’s world today’ and bringing people together to strengthen manufacturing knowledge and capability in the region. SEBN will host a Showcasing Women breakfast on Friday 24 July with special guest speaker Kate Weiss, Table of Plenty founder and CEO. The company provides thousands of hours of work for people with disabilities. Kate won last year’s Telstra Business Owner Award and InStyle Business Award. SEBN has its headquarters at the Dandenong Civic Centre, 225 Lonsdale Street, Dandenong, and can be contacted on 8571 1576 or sebn@ cgd.vic.gov.au

Using time more WISE-ly JOB seekers can now access assistance from a new WISE Employment office in Narre Warren. The not-for-profit job service provider also retained its sites in Dandenong and Cranbourne under the Federal Government’s new jobactive scheme, which came into effect on 1 July. WISE Employment won a jobactive contract, part of the government’s $5 billion initiative to help employers in the community find work-ready employees, and job seekers find and keep a job or source suitable Work for the Dole activities. Narre Warren, Dandenong and Cranbourne job seekers can access tailored support based on their assessed needs, from help with looking for work and writing a resume, to preparing for interviews and considering job referrals. WISE Employment CEO Matt Lambelle said that alongside assessing employment potential and devising personalised plans for each individual, WISE would continue to work with local employers to understand their requirements and offer job-specific training. La Trobe MP Jason Wood said a national network of organisations was delivering jobactive, which was dedicated to getting more Australians into work. “Job seekers can receive help with developing a resume, preparing for interviews, accessing training and work experience opportunities, and support to settle in,” he said. “There is also financial help, such as Relocation Assistance and the Job Commitment Bonus, to help job seekers move from welfare to work. “For employers, the new model includes wage subsidies of up to $6500 for young job seekers, Indigenous job seekers, the long-term unemployed, and up to $10,000 to help employ older workers. “These subsidies help to reduce the upfront costs of hiring and training new staff for employers,” Mr Wood added.

THE Eagles will fly into the Cardinia Beaconhills Golf Club on Saturday 18 July - well almost. The club will present The Eagles Story from 7pm. In the summer of 1976, an album was released that was to begin a wave of amazing music that would span more than 40 years, that album and that band were The Eagles and this is their story. Words and pictures could never do this story justice, it is all about the music and every night The Eagles Story takes that music to the limit. The sumptuous vocal arrangements that became the signature of The Eagles are faithfully recreated live on stage by band members John

THREE almighty pooches had more than 70 primary school children in stitches at the Hampton Park Library. Lou-lou, Pip and Bubbles can sing, act, juggle and walk on two feet as part of their circus act with ring leader Pete Murphy. Between blatantly disobeying their master by standing when asked to sit and jumping when asked to stand, the energetic poodles provide the perfect school holiday fun. At 15 years old Lou-lou has still got some tricks up her sleeve but owner and presenter of the show, Mr Murphy said she’s more of a supervisor now. “Lou-lou gets hypnotised with a string of sausages and falls backwards, Pip can spring into the air like a kangaroo and the kids love Bubbles juggling and her coloured head of hair and skirt and top,” Mr Murphy said. The comedy show allows the children to participate and have a go at instructing the canines as well. Mr Murphy said it’s nice to see some children warm to the dogs by the end of the show. “Some of the kids don’t have much to do with dogs at home and are scared of them but by the end are holding the dogs for a photo,” he said. A crowd favourite is Loulou’s rendition of ‘how much is that doggy in the window’ and five-year-old Bubbles hat juggling skills. Connecting people with the local sport they love.

Brawl was just plain ugly By DAVID NAGEL NO, not this weekend! There is no place for an after-thesiren brawl, especially the one that took place between Narre Warren and Cranbourne players and spectators at Fox Road on Saturday. The timing of this brawl, just 36 hours after the football world learned of the devastating loss of Adelaide Crows coach Phil Walsh, well it just leaves a sour taste in your mouth. While the rest of the football world was, quite literally, united as one, locking arms in a show of unprecedented unity, two clubs decided to turn back the clock and hang a dark cloud over the game. And about the only thing that insiders and outsiders from both clubs could agree on after Saturday’s clash was, “We’re no angels,” but that’s where the acceptance stopped and the fingerpointing began. The wash-up of the controversial finish to what was already a brutal game of Australian Rules football is this. South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) operations manager Liz Triffitt has called in an independent investigator, who will make recommendations to SEFNL, who will then decide whether to proceed, and hand the matter over to AFL South East, who conduct tribunal hearings. Under AFL Rules, the independent investigator has up to 21 days to make

the final recommendations. But first, the tribunal has a date on Wednesday night; a separate matter from the investigation, where Cranbourne full-forward Marc Holt will challenge his two-game suspension for a charge of striking Narre Warren’s George Angelopoulos during the final quarter. And the final matter, of which we’re sure, is that Cranbourne Football Club president Shane Baker has emailed a letter to SEFNL, expressing the club’s disappointment at an alleged incident that took place between Narre Warren coach Chris Toner and Cranbourne players Mathew Fletcher and Martin Leinmueller. Baker confirmed the club had sent a letter to the league, but refused to elaborate further on the matter. “There are elements with what happened after the game that we were disappointed with and the matter is now in the league’s hands and they’ll deal with it how they see fit,” he said. Toner denied he was involved in an incident with the Cranbourne players. “It’s in the hands of the league, so I can’t say too much, but these players are like sons to me,” he said. “I won’t apologise for sticking up for my players, that’s who I am, and that will never change. “If I’m guilty of pushing my way in to protect my players, then throw the book at me.” For more of the SEFNL round 11 action, see inside Sport.

A scuffle after the final siren between Narre Warren and Cranbourne players quickly escalated to involve Pictures: ROB CAREW supporters of both clubs. 141302

At the heart of Pearcedale, there beats a Big V By JARROD POTTER FLIPPING his football world upside down, a chance decision by Dandenong Stingrays to move Jake Frawley down back is starting to pay off. Frawley, 16, who is a “Pearcedale all my life” by his own proud admission person, was selected to represent Vic Country at the under-16 national championships, currently running on the Gold Coast. In a career full of accolades - a couple of premierships and fighting his way into the Dandenong Stingrays - making Vic Country is the peak achievement for the versatile centre-half-back/wingman. “It was a good feeling,” Frawley said. “Definitely making this team is a highlight and Stingrays as well getting into all their development squads and also winning two grand finals in the MPJFL.” Jake mostly lets his football do the talking but he has relished the challenge of working his way down back this season. “Just playing footy, I love playing it and it keeps me fit,” Frawley said. “I like to play centre half back that’s where I’m playing at the moment - like to run off and I’m pretty good in the one-on-ones as well. “I normally watch the forwards as I’ve been a forward - the Sting-

rays this year just thought I’d be better down back. “I like playing back - can read the ball better - set up the play as well.” His next couple of years feature a hectic array of challenges as he hopes to work his way into TAC Cup contention, AFL Academy selection and bring home another premiership with his beloved Panthers. “Hopefully I can get into the under-18s as a bottom ager next year and play a couple of games and play a game of seniors and win another flag with Pearcedale,” Frawley said. He’s Pearcedale year-in, yearout, charging in to bowl in the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association over the warmer months. While the talented bowler has his sights on cricketing success as well, if he needed to commit one way or another, it would be towards footy. “Leaning towards footy - I just like it more and love the game,” Frawley said. Frawley wanted to thank his parents for taking him everywhere and being supportive of his football ambitions. The Vic Country under-16s have been on the Gold Coast this week, featuring in a match on Saturday against Western Australia and one on Tuesday against Vic Metro before the final round-robin clash against South Australia on Friday.

Pink Scorpions douse the Cats By JARROD POTTER

Vic Country celebrated its national championships’ triumph, finishing off the carnival on Picture: JARROD POTTER Thursday with an unbeaten record. 141285

Get on the Big V for victory! By JARROD POTTER AFL UNDER-18 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - Round 6 PUTTING the icing on the cake, Vic Country’s amazing winning streak was extended to six as it wrapped up the AFL Under-18 National Championships title. Finishing the carnival on Thursday afternoon at the Cattery - Simonds Stadium, Geelong - Vic Country notched a 32-point triumph to secure a rare unbeaten record. Western Australia put up a dogged effort - improving dramatically on their last performance against the Big V earlier in the carnival, where a 100-point thrashing was doled out to the Swans. The early possession belonged to Vic Country as Darcy Parish (29 disposals), Jarrod Berry (22) and Joe Maishman (21) had it on a string. But their best efforts weren’t rewarded as the forwards failed to kick truly and ended up clunking 15 behinds in a lacklustre day in front of goals. Despite battling back into the match in the third term -

kicking three goals to one - the Swans just didn’t have the tank to go with Vic Country as the home side kept them goalless in the final term to earn the national championship. For starring up forward throughout the carnival booting 18 goals - Murray’s mountainous forward Josh Schache was named both the Vic Country MVP and the Larke Medallist for best Division-1 player in the championships. Gippsland in-and-under forward Ben Ainsworth was exceptional up front for Vic Country - swooping on anything in his area to boot five goals and cap off an exceptional carnival that will have selectors keen to call his name come November’s draft. Dandenong midfielder Kurt Mutimer relished his chance through the midfield, snaring 20 possessions in his best performance for Vic Country while Gach Nyuon had 29 hit-outs and toiled all day against Western Australia’s talls. Vic Country coach Paul Henriksen - who also coached many of these players at the un-

VFL - ROUND 12 THERE was a lot to play for on Saturday as Casey Scorpions celebrated their annual tradition in fitting style. Wearing the pink jumpers for the seventh year in a row, the Scorpions put their full weight behind the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) for its Pink Ribbon Day. Whatever was in the dye for the pink jumpers seemed to have an effect on the Scorpions as the Casey contingent flew out of the blocks - booting five goals to nil in an action-packed first term. Fighting back before the half, Geelong didn’t give in, but similarly couldn’t halt Casey’s forward line generating a few highlights on a bleak day weather-wise. The freezing conditions - more fitting of a day in the Arctic than in Cranbourne - took full hold through the third as neither side could escape the scrums and packs with the rain driving across the field. No matter what the Cats - and temporary VFL recruit Jimmy Bartel - had in their arsenal, the Scorpions were one step ahead and played the conditions to a tee, even managing to boot a few goals against the unrelenting typhoon. Jayden Hunt (3 goals) put his best VFL performance in

Making the leap from VFL to TAC Cup, Bunyip/ Gippsland Power forward dynamo Tom Paplkey impressed everyone as the 23rd man relished his first chance of senior state-level football - booting three majors and earning the coach’s eye as one of the best afield along with Melbournelisted Mark Jamar, Viv Michie and James Harmes. The Scorpions improve to a six-and-four record before putting its eighth place on the line against Port Melbourne on Sunday at Casey Fields.

Eagles come to the party By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN WOMEN’S FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 ON THE big stage for the first time, Cranbourne VWFL made the most of the opportunity to give the demanding VFL crowd something to talk about. Bringing VWFL and VFL together for the first time, Casey Scorpions invited the Eagles to play as the curtain-raiser on Saturday as part of Pink Ribbon Day and the Eagles soared when given the chance. The expansive Casey Fields VFL Oval was made even more difficult to traverse by the frigid, wet conditions, but the Eagles managed to fly across the wings and hit up the forwards when the moment mattered most. ‘Hundred-metre’ Hayley Wildes - thusly named for her hard-running, bouncing attack on the footy in the third term before booting it long for a goal, was electric through the centre in her usual manner. With the conditions bringing the high-flyers down to groundlevel, it was the hard-working Eagles that relished the chance as Ash Fennell, Tess McEvoy and Corrine Cullis led the charge. Cranbourne failed to kick away - waywardly spraying 3.8 (26) through the first half before Knox cut the margin in

But with the wind at their back, it was a matter of bombing it long and letting the forwards sort it out as Bianca Jakobsson (3 goals) and Kirsten McLeod (2 goals) slammed home the match-winners. “How good is this ground - you won’t play on a better ground,” Cranbourne coach Kris Smith said. “This is amazing and I thought we used it pretty well but the conditions were odd. “We don’t seem to play that well when we’ve got to adjust from quarter to quarter - just not switched on enough I guess - but we’ll take the win. “38 points is 38 points I suppose - especially after the draw last time.”

The win gives Cranbourne second place outright in Division 1 and face Eastern Devils from 12pm on Sunday. DIVISION 3 St Kilda Sharks were absolutely pasted by the relentless wrecking machine known as Endeavour Hills. The Falcons have proven their best standard is well above the rest in Division 3 and that was made evident with a 17.13 (115) to 0.0 (0) victory. Georgia Punton booted eight in tandem with Siona Pilkington (4 goals) as the forwards remain difficult to stop in this campaign. The Falcons continue to sing the song every week - remaining unbeaten in Division 3 ninefrom-nine to start their club journey - and face Cranbourne at Casey Fields on Sunday.

Flying fists obscured the victory By DAVID NAGEL IT was largely over-shadowed by an ugly brawl after the final siren but Cranbourne secured its best victory of the season on Saturday, a 15-point triumph over arch-rival Narre Warren at Kalora Park. But while the four points may be locked away, there’s going to be some worrying times ahead after an independent investigation was launched on Monday into the brawl involving players and spectators from both clubs. It’s a not a good look for the newly-formed South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) and the AFL South East Commission, whose tribunal is likely to hand out some harsh penalties once recommendations are received in the coming weeks. AFL South East Commission region general manager Jeremy Bourke said it was one thing to be involved in such an ugly incident, but to try and defend those actions was another thing altogether. “It is totally unacceptable to try and defend the actions which took place in front of women and children,” Bourke said. “It’s fair to say that there are some key stakeholders that are less than impressed with what took place on the weekend.” After a grinding first half, where two of the most talented teams in the competition kept each other to just three goals, it was the Eagles who dug deepest, with a 5.2 to 2.2 third quarter to give them a 15-point buffer at three-quarter time.

Another arm-wrestle ensued, both teams scoring 1.2 in the final quarter to give the Eagles the sweetest possible victory. Coach Simon Goosey said his side had earned that reward after working hard on its fitness in the pre-season. “The boys were pretty pumped up after the game, with the rivalry, the passion; it was good to come away with the win in the end,” he said. “The most pleasing thing is our fitness, we’ve got a really good record in second halves this year and that’s due to the hard work we put in during the pre-season. “We made some really good decisions with the ball, and that was probably another difference in the end,” he said. Cranbourne’s forward line was dominated by Michael Theodoridis, who used the space created by his skipper Marc Holt to full advantage, using his combination of height, pace and strength to kick five goals that were treasured like gold in the context of the match. George Angelopoulos kicked four for the Magpies, while Jarrod Anderson, Michael Collins and Ryan Morrison, who kept Holt to just one goal for the day, were other solid contributors. Reigning-premier Beaconsfield raised the pressure gage in its 58-point defeat of Doveton. “Our pressure against Pakenham (in round nine) was fantastic but I thought we took it up another 20 per cent on the weekend,” coach Clint Evans said. “We played really contested one-on-one footy, we didn’t allow them to drop blokes back and be

There were jubilant scenes in the Cranbourne change rooms on Saturday, with from left; coach Simon Goosey, Brandon Osborne and Michael Theodoridis all part of the action. 141302 Picture: ROB CAREW free, we just didn’t allow them any time or space all day.” Jake Bowd was an unlikely main source of goals for the winners, booting four, while skipper Daniel Mislicki kicked two in a clear best on ground display. Tooradin was laser-like with its accuracy during the second quarter of its 31-point victory over ROC. The Seagulls were perfect from 10 shots at goal, their 10.0 to 3.3 second term setting up the win. Julian Suarez kicked three while Patrick Chin continued his recent return to form. In the final game of round 11, Mitchell Johnson kicked seven goals in Berwick’s 113-point belting of Hampton Park. Johnson, in his first game back since round four, was joined by skipper Madi Andrews on the home side’s best players list. Pakenham had the bye.

Redbacks a real chance, bar miracles By DAVID NAGEL BARRING an absolute miracle, Hampton Park will start its finals campaign with a doublechance under its belt after a commanding 59-34 victory over Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve. All the pieces of the puzzle fell into place for the Redbacks on the weekend, with Doveton’s victory over Beaconsfield leaving Kylie Kibble and her side 14 points clear of the fourth-placed Eagles with just a handful of games remaining. And Saturday’s loss leaves Berwick in a precarious position too, in sixth-place and with the very real likelihood of missing a finals berth for the first time in many a season. After an even start, the Redbacks set up their victory with an explosive burst, with a staggering 35 goals to 13 during the second and third quarters. It wasn’t so much the goal difference that was impressive, but more the fact that it was done against a team that had been in pretty good form in recent times. The inclusion of star goal-shooter Emma Ryde obviously made a difference, but it was the overall team performance that was most impressive on the weekend. Doveton has snuck quietly back into the topfive after continuing its recent dominance over Beaconsfield at Robinson Oval. The Doves, who scored an impressive 25goal victory over the Eagles back in round three, started fast, and never took the foot off the pedal, securing a 55-27 win on the weekend. It must be purely match-ups that worry the Eagles when they play the Doves, because their form has been better against the quality teams in the competition. Beacy has defeated Berwick and Hampton Park, and drawn with Pakenham, while Doveton

has failed against all the other teams in the top five except the Eagles. On Saturday it was in-form goal-shooter Rahni Samason that led the way for the Doves, shooting 16 of her side’s first-quarter goals and 25 of 30 until half-time. The Doves’ defence was also sensational with Cara Humbert, Liz Edwards and Lesina Lalotoa keeping the Eagles to just 11 goals in the first half. The pressure applied by Kate Murphy (wing attack) and Breanne Miller (centre) through the midcourt also made the Eagles a bit jittery. Beaconsfield coach Amy Heath made some changes midway through the second quarter, with Kylie Baker, Danielle Cameron and Gabby Stinear swapping bibs, but it was to no avail. Ladder-leaders Narre Warren took three-quarters to shake off a determined Cranbourne outfit, eventually prevailing 38-27 at Kalora Park. The Magpies had a four-goal lead at quarter time and appeared headed for a comfortable victory ... but the Eagles hit back. With Monalisa Groom in good form under the ring, the Eagles matched the Magpies in the second term, with nine goals each, before winning the third quarter eight goals to seven. It left them three-goals adrift at the final break, forcing the premiership favourites to lift their tempo once again. Elly Stewart slotted 10 goals in the final quarter to give the Magpies a boost ahead of this week’s clash against Pakenham. It was a solid victory from the Magpies, considering their skipper Jade Heinrich watched on from the sidelines all day. Leigh Taylor (centre) took on the midcourt role with aplomb, while Tracey Dell (goal keeping) and Kara Hargraves (goal defence) were dominant at the defensive end when the prize was on the line in the final quarter. ROC won its third game for the season, and

its second against Tooradin, with a 43-28 victory over the Seagulls at Starling Road. The Kangaroos, who have suffered some close losses during their recent five-game losing streak, finally received some reward for their efforts. Players like Lauren Hargreaves, Kylie Bradshaw, Laura Quinn, Amy Tivendale and Sophie Tracey can now look forward to the remainder of the season with a bit of confidence under their belts. The Kangaroos have already shown they’re capable of pulling off a surprise, having defeated Doveton in round two, so can face a tough finish to the season with relish. Tooradin remains winless, and has a tough draw ahead, but you get the feeling that players like Ebony Dolan, Tara Smith, Stacey Sawyer and Dayle Willis won’t give up on the season without a fight. Pakenham had the bye.

Holt heads an all-star team

Look out, we’re Cavs

CRANBOURNE’S current-day goal-kicking machine Marc Holt has been named captain of the club’s Team of the Last 25 Years, which was announced at the club’s annual ball on Saturday night. Holt joins his 2011 premiership team-mates, Matt Thompson, Brandon Osborne, Matt Rus, Justin Berry and Mat Fletcher in the starting 18, while Curtis Barker, Ryan Davey and Leigh Holt were named on the interchange bench. Doug Koop, the 2011 premiership coach, was named coach of the side. The club also celebrated the induction of five Hall of Fame members, with Chris Holland, Graeme Kelsall, Graham Davies, Leo Kelly and the late Owen Kelsall all honoured by the club. Hank Frenken, an active supporter and member of the club for the last 43 years, was elevated to Legend status after being inducted into the Hall of Fame last year.

TWO big wins kept the juggernaut that is Casey Cavaliers basketball rolling with the men’s side now four games clear with only three matches left in the Big V home-and-away season. It seems 13 is an especially lucky number down at The Fortress with the Cavaliers extending their winning streak to the somewhat maligned digit after a road-trip triumph on Saturday night over Latrobe before backing up on Sunday against Sunbury. Going into triple digits for the second time in a month, Casey outlasted a dogged Energy outfit in Traralgon to run up a 100-84 triumph. Casey shared the points as well as the minutes as Dean Johnson (17 points, 12 rebounds) rattled off another strong showing in tandem with Lester Strong (15 points, 14 rebounds) and Brent Hobba (15 points, 9 rebounds). On Sunday, Sunbury fought back in the third term, but no one keeps this Casey side down for long as Brent Hobba (22 points, 14 rebounds) and James Deneefe (14 points) seized the victory in a whole-roster 94-84 triumph. Completely out-rebounding the Jets 55-27, the Cavaliers left no question to this result, despite Sunbury keeping in the match via the three-point line. Casey coach Stewart Baird thought the Cavs’ plans went off without a hitch as they try to keep everyone fresh heading into the Division-1 finals. “We planned the weekend pretty carefully in the way of minutes

Where is Casey ranked in Big V Division 1 at the moment? That’s right Matt Witherden - number one Picture: JARROD POTTER in the Watson Conference. 141074 - we’re conscious that we’re getting pretty close towards finals and didn’t want to push guys if we could avoid it,” Baird said. “Saturday night it took us a while to shake Latrobe - great shooting team and have a number of guys who can knock down the big shots, especially at home. “We got good minutes into everyone and in particular Brad Szalek played some great minutes on Sunday and I guess we’ve been able to save Lester, Hobba and Witho (Witherden) a bit.” Sunday’s double-header was part of Casey’s Beyond the Ball fundraiser for beyondblue - with Baird

a strong support of the charity that works to negate the impact of anxiety, depression and suicide in the community. “Kudos to Jess Szalek as this was her baby (Beyond The Ball) in the pre-season she took it to the committee and agreed to give it a date,” Baird said. “It is part of a great community that we’re a part of - people really support us and when we get behind something everyone does as well.” Casey heads out to Melton on Saturday evening to face one of the top seeds in the Terrill Conference. The Cavaliers women started the run home emphatically against

Keysborough on Saturday night, taking a 76-51 win with Jess Szalek (21 points, 10 rebounds) and Natalie Dowdy (14 points, 13 rebounds) firing under the basket alongside Bec Magdich (14 points, 8 rebounds). Casey women remain just under the fold for Big V finals and have two matches - starting on Sunday against Mornington - to sneak back in to the top four. With two matches left in the Youth Men’s season, Casey Cavaliers is shaping up to be one of the favourites, even with its loss to top seed Warrandyte 61-72 on Sunday. Casey faces Melton on Saturday night away.

Comets’ own Boyd rebounds boom boom raider wins By JARROD POTTER

By JARROD POTTER WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE CASEY Comets picked up their third draw of the season, holding back Sandringham in a 1-1 slog on Friday night. Laura Croft raided the Sandringham defence to rocket an almighty strike into the net at the 24 minute mark, giving the Comets hope of their first victory in 2015. Holding a 1-0 lead held at the half, a rare position for Casey to be in this season, the challenge became a whole lot tougher in the 72nd minute. The draw lifts Casey from the bottom of the WPL ladder and the side remains two matches inside the relegation zone with seven rounds left in the season. Casey heads to Knox Regional Football Centre on Sunday evening to battle Booroondara from 6pm. NPL1 EAST MELBOURNE CITY’S Wade Dekker knocked in a solitary goal, proving enough to brush aside Dandenong City in a 0-1 defeat. Despite the best efforts of Dandy strikers Sean Seavill and Shaun Filipovic, in the battle of Cities, Melbourne City was too mighty. Dandenong City sits sixth and heads to Murray United this weekend. PERSEVERANCE has defined the football journey of Matthew Boyd. Boyd, 32, hauled his way up through every rank as his AFL dream at times appeared a mere mirage on the horizon. From Narre Warren juniors, through a tough campaign with Dandenong Stingrays, he had to head down the coast to Frankston and battle his way out of the seconds and back into senior selection and draft contention. Once the hard yards were in the bank though - Boyd has rarely taken a false step in the AFL. He’s proved his calibre as one of the finest south-eastern players to pull on the boots, and that fateful debut for number 42 in 2003 was just the start of a career including three Western Bulldogs best and fairest, All Australian honours and captaincy from 2011-2013. Boyd tried to shrug off the milestone, as he believes the 300-game mark reached by former team mates Brad Johnson, Scott West, Chris Grant, Rohan Smith and potentially the current captain Rob Murphy (currently 283 matches) - was the more significant achievement. “I’ve played with a lot of players that got to 300, so 250 doesn’t seem that important, but obviously it’s a

big achievement I suppose,” Boyd said. “It’s another game - it’s obvious a pretty significant achievement I suppose - you don’t really think about it until after the fact.” Is 300 on the radar for Boyd in that case? He’s not sure at this stage, but hopes to still be a relevant factor for the Bulldogs as long as he can muster. “What I’m trying to do is just enjoy footy as much as I possibly can - if it is that this is my last year then so be it, that’s what it is,” Boyd said. “We’ll see how the body holds up, see how I’m playing and see if I’m still required - there’s a lot of factors you have to take into account when you get to my experience, age, wisdom - I’d like to think - but we’ll have to wait and see how it pans out. “Just trying to enjoy every moment of it and it’s been good so far.” A switch in tact this year via new coach Luke Beveridge has reinvigorated the steely midfielder, who is now the Bulldogs’ rebounding defender. Starring in his new role, Boyd and his Bulldogs brethren ensured game 250 would finish on a high-note, as he racked up 31 possessions, 14 marks and the sweetest of all, a goal to cap off his milestone in fitting fashion.

Carnival on the move to future By EWAN KENNEDY THE first all-new Kia Carnival in almost 10 years was long overdue when it arrived in Australia early in 2015. But rest assured the intervening decade hasn’t been wasted. Huge strides in body design and engineering have been made globally and the new Kia Carnival people mover has advanced significantly when compared with the old stager it has finally replaced. In fact, there’s one important area in which the big South Korean marques Kia and its parent company Hyundai have moved ahead faster than any other car maker. Quality of finish. The Japanese probably still outperform the Koreans in this way, but only by a small margin. To get a European vehicle that’s as well made as a Korean one you have to buy in the top end of the market and pay many tens of thousands of dollars more. All-new Carnival has style, and plenty of it. No longer is this a box on wheels bought by the family that needs - rather than wants - a people mover. We love the big bold radiator grille and squared-off front of the new Carnival. The rear-side area has the newly fashionable slim window design and this ties in nicely with a rear end that’s shaped to appeal, yet is squared off and sensible. In a quest for easier driving and

parking the Carnival’s body is slightly shorter and lower than before, but sits on a longer wheelbase to stretch the legroom in the cabin. Headroom is still plentiful. Seat layout is two individual seats in front; three in the centre row; two reasonable units in the back. The centre row has its two outer pews slightly wider than the centre seat. The centre seat backrest can be folded down to form a table, or can be removed altogether to give stretch out elbow room. There’s good luggage length and volume and various configurations of passenger / cargo space are offered. The rearmost three seats have a 60/40 split arrangement, one or both sections can be folded completely flat to provided uninterrupted boot space. There’s stretch out legroom that gives the sort of space you normally only get in a limousine. Ease of entry to the rearmost seats is better than average, though this area is probably best left to the younger and nimbler. Space in the rear seat is good without being outstanding, but that’s not unusual in this class. Even with all seats in use there is still good luggage space. Carnival has a full suite of crash avoidance or mitigation features, including rollover mitigation and brake cornering control. Big people movers need plenty of power when loaded with people and

Model range Who says people movers have to be square and boring? Certainly not the guys and gals at Kia. stacks of stuff. Kia has been smart in offering Carnival with a 3.3-litre V6 petrol or a big torque 2.2-litre turbo-diesel. Power outputs are 206 kW (petrol) and 147 kW (diesel). More important are the torque numbers, a very useful 336 Newton metres for the petrol and a huge 440 Nm from the diesel. Official fuel consumption numbers are 11.6 and 7.7 litres per hundred kilometres respectively. Clever design results in Kia’s allnew Carnival being more an eight seat sedan than it is a people mover. It provides impressive comfort, space and quality of ride. Entry and exit to the front two rows of seats is simple, there’s the usual hassle for older and/or larger people getting into the rearmost seats. However as this is a low-set people

mover not a high-riding SUV those difficulties are minimised. Handling is competent enough and sensible drivers will never get anywhere near the Carnival’s limits. If you do push it too hard or enter a corner faster than expected because of inattentive driving the big Kia will do whatever it can to avoid crash, or at

least minimise its consequences. It’s interesting to note that Kia Australia even employs Australian suspension and steering people to work on their people mover. Smart move. Parking is easier than you might expect thanks to excellent visibility in all directions. Rear parking sensors are fitted to all models in the Carnival range. We dislike foot operated parking brakes, finding them awkward in use. If you use the added safety provided by left-foot braking foot parking brakes are even worse because you need to juggle feet to get the parking brake off and the Carnival moving. Presumably the parking brake is like this to suit the Americans, hopefully the first update of the big Kia will see it following the European route of using an electric handbrake. Engine performance is good, even with a decent load back there. Our road test review was done in the big-torque Kia turbo-diesel that we have admired since its introduction. It has plenty of grunt at virtually all revs and is pretty economical. We found it typically using six to eight litres per hundred kilometres on motorways and non-challenging country roads. This rose to nine to eleven litres around town. To inspect the Kia range contact Berwick Kia, 2-12 Clyde Road, Berwick. Phone 9709 1900.
