GEELONG’S homeless are in for an Antarctic-like cold snap this weekend, with up to 40 people shivering through bone-chilling nights outdoors. Weather reports say it will be eastern Australia’s coldest snap in five years, extending as far as northern Queensland. Local homelessness services said some would even be heading to the You Yangs for isolation and security despite weekend top temperatures of just 10 and 11 degrees. The Salvation Army said it was hard to determine the number of homeless in Geelong as many couch surfed, or slept in cars, but the number of locals exposed to the wintry elements nightly was on the rise. Damien Bernasconi, from Salvo Connect Belmont, said there had been a steady increase in women sleeping rough, despite the bitterly cold nights. “I really do not know how some of them survive,” he said. With the region set to be hit with another cold-snap accompanied by persistent rain, it will be a testing time for care providers as well as the homeless. “It’s getting tougher as there is an increase in people coming through our services. We estimate there would be 40 people sleeping rough every night in Geelong,” Mr Bernasconi said. “There has also been an increase in women, there’s a lot of mental health issues and then there’s family violence problems. They are sleeping down
by the river and some go to the You Yangs,” he said. Many of the homeless opted to avoid the city as they could become targets, preferring the isolation of the bush. “We try and engage with them as best we can. Some of them have lost living skills, we do try and get them off the streets as quickly as possible, however, some have been on the streets for years,” Mr Bernasconi said. The Salvation Army has donated swags to a number of homeless people, but the cost is prohibitive. Salvo Connect in Belmont provides showers, a laundry and a community room for the homeless. Mr Bernasconi said people should be more aware of the strugglers around them and the help services on offer. Josephine Barnes from Samaritan House, providing crisis accommodation for men, said its four rooms were full, accommodating six men. The organisation, which is not government funded, is opening another nine beds in the next month to cope with a climbing demand. “There is an increase in demand, especially when it is bitterly cold,” Ms Barnes said. “Our aim is to get people into some sort of accommodation, some go back to couch surfing, others we do not know where they go,” she said Ms Barnes said while the city had plenty of homeless it also had many volunteers and donors prepared to help.

I swear, sometimes I think the battery in my phone reads Dylan homas. It’s all very dramatic having a phone with a dying battery. he phone takes eons to charge, the percentage displayed on the screen is no longer a accurate indicator of how much gas is let in the tank, and then the phone shuts of at the most inopportune times.

BILL Shorten’s performance as a union boss might be under the microscope but conditions wouldn’t have been as good as they are today without unions, as his supporters will attest. Shearers did it pretty hard in the old days, as author Evan McHugh makes clear in a new book of that name, Shearers. And up among the tough bosses was the Bellarine’s pioneering darling Anne Drysdale. Her shearer’s cook, Vere Armstrong, worked while heavily pregnant right up to her delivery. “The fact that the cook worked up to the day before she gave birth to her seventh child highlights the lack of reasonable conditions of employment at the time, particularly for a woman in the final stages of her pregnancy,” he writes. CERTAIN City Hall rep overseeing a citizenship ceremony in recent days was proud to welcome some new Aussies to the clan. Reps from the electoral commission made sure the newbies were immediately invested with paperwork to register to vote now they’re true blue. To which our unnamed city hall rep purportedly advised them: “And don’t forget to vote for me!” Nothing like a bit of hustings hassle in a welcome to country. IT’S WELL known our erstwhile mayor Darryn Lyons will do almost anything to make a photo op crackle.

And he’s been known to throw himself into the political deep end on a number of occasions, sartorial elegance and all. But he may have met his match in the enthusiastically boisterous swim coach Laurie Lawrence. The pair happily got their feet wet at Waurn Ponds Leisurelink to highlight Lawrence’s World Wide Swim School, an online swimming resource for parents, teachers and swim schools. At least this time Darryn only jumped into the shallow end. THIS week’s prize for media timing goes to the Cats for yesterday’s Tom Hawkins re-signing announcement. It arrived about 9am, just as news editors were mulling over Fairfax’s yarn about the Cats financial fortunes suffering a million-dollar turnaround this year: Nice try...

Poor Cats plead to AFL While changes to membership packages sold to fans is a serious part of the Cat’s woes the AFL equalisation tax is rearing its head as a key bone of contention. The Cats have been unhappy with the equalisation tax, although relatively quiet compared to midlevel teams who have protested loudly about the AFL’s new cash cow. Cats president Colin Carter was labelled a hypocrite by Collingwood’s Eddie Maguire after complaining about the tax. “The philosophy is wrong,” Mr Carter said. “What we are doing is just screwing the middle class while the rich are able to get their affairs in order which is what happens in real life.” More recently, Cat’s chief Brian Cook highlight-
By NOEL MURPHY IT might have three recent premierships under its belt, record members and a massive $70 million taxpayer-funded expansion but the Geelong Football Club is crying poor to the AFL as it faces down a $500,000 loss this year. A $1.1 million turnaround on its initial forecast for a $600,000 profit, the Cats’ ill fortunes are being blamed on downsized membership packages and the AFL’s controversial equalisation tax. The Cats face a $300,000 equalisation tax bill this year and a $400,000 slug next year but have applied to the AFL for relief. The club is understood to have lodged a formal submission to the AFL for finance relief as it faces its second loss in as many years.
ed a raft of financial challenges at Catland as the club grapples with a lack of revenue forcing it to slow down its football department spending. The Independent also revealed last month that 12 Cats players with long-term injuries of at least two months were costing the club around $2.5 million out of a $9 million payroll, when Mr Cook addressed a business breakfast. Mr Cook was overseas and did not return Independent calls for comment before going to print. Requests for comment from the club’s acting CEO Rosie King, chief financial officer Sue Clark and board chairman Carter were rejected by media manager Kevin Diggerson. Mr Diggerson said “the gist” of the story was correct but requested a delay on commenting until Mr Cook’s return.
Three ring circus time for Geelong’s ringmaster By NOEL MURPHY

IT’S SHAPING up as Geelong’s biggest party in years – a Gatsby-like circus-cabaretburlesque show complete with pythons, fire-eaters, contortionists and acrobats. The guest list is expected to include industry captains, celebrities, entrepreneurs, politicians, media and all manner of movers and shakers before it’s thrown open to the whole of Geelong. Red carpet, stiltwalking ushers and smoke bombs on the street will greet guests at the 50th birthday of Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons in what he says will be like a Cirque du Soleil-Moulin Rouge extravaganza. The celebrations are set for his Home House nightclub on August 21. “There will be aerial hoopists, fire breathers, tumblers, dancers, showgirls, burlesque
— lots of silk and feathers,” a spokesperson told the Independent this week. “If you think like Water for Elephants, the old 1930s circuses, you’ll be close. “We’ve confirmed fire-spinners, a midget ringmaster, live nude body painting, cigarette girls on skates serving canapés, aerial performers, a strongman and jugglers. “There’ll be a burlesque dancer and python, trick skaters, live music, a sideshow alley. We’re still locking in the live performers. “Performers have been sourced from Geelong and Melbourne and we’re expecting a lot of media, political and business and social scene figures.” Cr Lyons has already been inviting friends informally, telling them to keep the date free. “There will be acts you just won’t believe, it’s going to be spectacular,” he said.
In brief Highway roundabout MIDLAND Highway will get a new roundabout to reduce the risk of crashes at the busy Fyansford-Gheringhap Road intersection. Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney said the $2.48 million upgrade, due for completion in 2017, would address a history of head-on and rearend crashes at the intersection.
Eye on shoppers A TEMPORARY mobile surveillance camera will be set up in Ocean Grove’s main shopping precinct, The Terrace, in the coming weeks in response to a spate of robberies in the area. Ocean Grove’s Cr Jan Farrell said the mobile camera would assist police with surveillance in the area, after local traders asked for added security.
Shark for festival THE GEELONG Small Business Festival promises more than 40 events and seminars for small businesses in August. Network Ten personality Chrissie Swan, leading small business and entrepreneurial author Andrew Griffiths and Network Ten Shark Tank judge Naomi Simson will be guest speakers.
Hawk for Cats GEELONG forward Tom Hawkins has committed to the Cats long term, inking a contract that will see him line up in the blue and white hoops until at least the end of 2020. The 26-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal which will see him remain a one-club player after being selected by Geelong under the father-son rule at pick 41 in the 2006 national draft.
Conflict resolution GEELONG mayor Darryn Lyons has resigned from the Central Geelong Task Force over potential conflict of interest issues because he owns several central business district properties. The task force, established to improve central Geelong as a business, commercial and residential hub, will be led by deputy mayor Cr Michelle Heagney.
Taxing times as scammers strike THE TAX office has issued a timely warning against scammers, with wage earners across the region preparing returns for potential rebates. Taxation fraudsters operating in Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula have been highlighted in the Independent recently and shysters are expected to attempt to cash in on local targets. The Australian Taxation Office said scammers, using emails, faxes, SMS and phone calls, can look or sound convincing. “You can generally tell they’re not genuine because they offer you an unexpected refund or grant and ask you to provide
personal information, credit card information or money,“ the ATO said in an alert. ‘’We will never email you asking for personal or credit card details, and you should never provide this information. “Under no circumstances should you give personal information, including credit card or banking details. Anyone who has received a suspicious phone call or email should contact us immediately.” The Independent revealed in May that con artists had targeted the region, with authorities warning businesses and residents they could become unsuspecting targets.
Local identity Mick Robinson, from Newcomb, said he received two messages on his answering machine from someone claiming to be from the ATO “to inform you that legal proceedings against your name will proceed in the next 24 hours. A collection officer will call soon to complete paperwork”. A number was left for him to call, to pay the alleged debt. Mr Robinson’s daughter-in-law, from East Geelong also received a demand call from a woman at the “tax office” about an alleged $2000 debt. After she was challenged, the caller hung up. If in doubt about the authenticity of a call from the ATO, phone 13 28 61.

Investigators examine plane death crash site By PAUL MILLAR
By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG artist Sophia Hewson has been shortlisted for this year’s Archibald Prize with her controversial painting Delivered. The entry is Hewson’s second shortlisting with the prestigious Archibald and tackles deep issues about female sexuality in a patriarchal society. Presently in New York on a six-month residency at the Residency Unlimited Program in New York, Hewson was unavailable for comment yesterday but a spokesperson, Mars Gallery director Andy Dinan, said the artist was “thrilled with the news”. “It’s a self portrait in which Sophia is using her body to open a dialogue on female self-objectification. This is when a woman intentionally uses her sexuality to objectify herself,” Ms Dinan said. The Archibald Prize winner will be announced 17 July.

er left the airfield.” Mr Baum raced to the smash to give aid with the pilot’s partner following. “He was slumped over the seat. We rang triple 000, there was a retired doctor who came over to help us, but we
could not revive him and he said that ‘nothing could be done’.” Mr Baum said the aviator had passed all his medical checks and three months ago had passed his proficiency tests.
FOR the first time in more than 100 years Geelong Trades Hall has more females than men on its executive team. Tim Gooden, elected as council secretary for another five years this week, said the women’s union network had been growing in strength for the past decade and was prepared to push issues. He admitted that the council meetings would have been an intimidating venue for many women over the decades and there had to be changes to encourage females to voice their concerns.

INVESTIGATORS will attempt to determine whether pilot or mechanical error led to the death of an elderly aviator, whose light plane plummeted to the ground shortly after take-off at Lethbridge, killing the Altona man. The partner of the veteran pilot watched in horror as the ultra-light hit the ground around noon on Wednesday. The home-built plane appeared to suffer little damage, but the 85-year-old pilot from Altona was slumped forward in the cockpit and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Michael Linke, the chief executive of Recreational Aviation Australia, said investigators would work with police to prepare a report for the coroner. The investigating team will check the mechanical history of the plane, log books and take into account “pilot-decision making” on the day. Mr Linke said it was unlikely that weather had any influence on the performance of the plane as it had been a fine day. Gary Baum, the owneroperator of the Lethbridge Airpark, said the aviator appeared to have taxied to the end of the runway and waited for another plane to land. Mr Baum had been in a

BRILLIANT NEW VARIETIES THIS SEASON
Rust and wool a stark reminder By NOEL MURPHY RUSTED nuts and washers sit cobwebbed, fixed to weatherbeaten bricks, while corroded mechanical contraptions, long since fallen into disuse, sit nearby garnished in fluff and woollen tufts. It’s a long time since the Phoenix Wool Scouring Works at Marnock Vale – beside Balyang Sanctuary – rumbled and whirred their industry, and the brick structures that housed them today stand sentinel to a past more or less forgotten today. Not by photographers such as Geelong West’s Lindsay Tucker, however. Drawn to history and its lighting and textural possibilities, she’s captured a striking black and white portfolio of the old plant’s bricks and chimney
stacks, its skewiff pipes and coils, its pigeons and guano and leafless scrubby surrounds. She’s recorded a sharp, stark stab at that passage of time that’s turned a Geelong agrarian industry into a rusticated memento of the past. Lindsay says she’s more student than photographer, and only part-way through a certificate IV in the craft. A singer-songwriter and well-known performer around Geelong, she was laid low by a workplace spinal injury and has been tackling photography and music production as she fights her way back to health. “I didn’t even know it was called Marnock Vale,” she said of her wool scouring works shots. “I’d been there to photograph ducks a few times and knew the buildings. I was there and thought
I’ll see what it looked like close and far away. “My Pop used to work there. I had no idea, I just showed my Mum the photos and she said he was a boiler maker. “So now it kind of has a sentimental value to my family as well. “I love historical buildings – there are lots of different textures and old world feel and I love black and white. It surprises me when you convert some photos in colour to black and white – in colour, they’d just be lost in the pile, but they can become amazing. “I’m still very much a beginner and I wonder sometimes if I’m getting them right. I feel like I’m winging it but I have a very clear vision how I want things to look.”

Bus, train complaints widen
Extra holidays will cost $14m
Review call on service By NOEL MURPHY FRUSTRATION with Geelong’s new bus and train services continues as users complain of dangers and difficulties as they dump the routes, opting for cars or lifts and even call for a boycott. Elderly users, students and shoppers say they have been left high and dry by PTV bus changes - forced to walk long distances or use multiple bus and train links to negotiate previously short and quick trips. Independent readers responded angrily to last week’s report of concerns raised in state parliament, criticising the new routes as private sector, profitdriven services failing to meet the needs of public transport. “I now have to drop my daughter off in Corio to catch a direct bus to Lara for school and then she has to walk to a train station and catch a bus to get home, said Heather Wedler. “If she misses the one train that comes to Corio then all other trains bypass the station and she ends up in the middle of town. How is this supposed to be better for her and not to mention safe for a 15-year-old? Kelly Bradley said her nephew usually caught a bus on Church Street which brought him to the Bellarine Highway in Newcomb. “Now he has to get on at Church St, get off at Geelong station, wait 35 minutes for a different bus to bring him to Bellarine Highway. Waste of time so we ditched the stupid bus and I’m driving him. Kerri Cole said that travelling home of an evening, she now had to “get off in an industrial area that has no footpath and is poorly lit. Monica Ayala said elderly people were not happy “especially when they have shopping about the cut to
PROBLEMS: Geelong's new treansport services are under fire. 141492 bus stops along Wilsons Road near Townsend Road, Whittington. While Rob Shuttleworth suggested “the buses need boycotting Debbie Salmon argued no-one seemed to care about the difficulties posed to the young and the elderly. “Fix this mess up for heaven’s sakes, she said. Geelong’s new train service came under fire from Western Victoria MLC
Simon Ramsay who called for an “immediate review of the Regional Rail Link. The service was already suffering delays and overcrowding, Mr Ramsay said. Hundreds of regional passengers “were treated like cattle, herded to coach bays, then told there were no coaches and promptly herded back to the platform to board overcrowded carriages that were delayed by over an
Picture: GREG WANE hour, he said. He said he had experienced commuters’ frustrations firsthand, travelling the Geelong/Melbourne service, with the incoming trip being delayed at Deer Park and the return 8.15pm service being cancelled. Mr Ramsay also said the revised bus schedules were causing concerns because bus connections and train timetables were “out of sync.
By PAUL MILLAR THE STATE Government’s decision to push through a pledge to give Victorians an AFL grand final holiday will cost Geelong companies up to $14 million, according to the Geelong Chamber of Commerce. Bernadette Uzelac, the chamber’s chief executive, said employers would pay heavily for the preelection commitment. However, acting small business minister Gavin Jennings said that Victorians worked hard and deserved two new public holidays - Easter Sunday and the eve of the grand final. The pre-election sweetener, however, left a sour taste with the employer group. “I think it was an ill-thought out election promise, Ms Uzelac said. “We’ve done some basic estimates relating to the Geelong region and it will cost employers about $12 million, she said. The $12 million related to a loss in productivity, paying for employees who were not working. There would be an additional $2 million burden on Geelong employers to pay penalty rates to workers the day before the grand final, she said. “In essence it inhibits business and employment growth, Ms Uzelac said. “It just does not make any sense and not everybody follows the football. Mr Jennings this week released a regulatory impact statements for the public holidays: an independent analysis of the potential costs and benefits of their introduction. The statement, undertaken by Pricewaterhouse Coopers, is open for public comment for 28 days. After public feedback is considered, the new holidays will be officially introduced via a notice in the Government Gazette. The RIS identifies that the two new public holidays will deliver up to $312 million in benefits to the economy, noting that the benefits could be much higher. In contrast, VECCI said that on grand final Friday, the cost to pay Victoria’s almost two million full time employees not to come to work could reach $543 million for the day. Additional wages for the retail, accommodation, food services and recreation industries are estimated to cost small business owners $105 million for the two holidays. The two new holidays give Victoria a nationwide high of 13 days, compared with NSW(11) and Queensland and Western Australia (10).

Lara gets into awards form MORE than 20 businesses have been nominated in the region’s newest business awards. The awards will recognise top operators in the Lara district. Lara District Community Bank and the town’s chamber of Commerce opened nominations in early June and the response “exceeded expectations”. Chamber vice-president Natalie Candy said Lara District Business Awards said she wanted to thank the community for getting behind the awards. “We are so pleased with the response in this the first year,” Ms Candy said.

Grand Opening Special!
“There has been a real mix of businesses nominated from established to new and large to small.” “We’re excited to recognise the work being done in the community.” Ms Candy said winners would be announced at a presentation event in August as Victoria conducted its annual Small Business Festival. Prizes include media exposure and substantial funds contributed to the local community group of choice. The Geelong Independent is sponsoring the Lara District Business Awards.
Managing editor Tony Galpin said the Independent was rapt to participate. “I commend the chamber and community bank on establishing such an accessible awards program,” Mr Galpin said. “I’m sure local businesses will appreciate the absence of entry fees and time-consuming submission forms, with an emphasis on community involvement.” Ms Candy said more information about the awards was available from the bank’s branch manager, Damien Foster, phone 5282 6430 or email mail@LDCE.com. au.

Launched this week, a book and social media clip based on the project have been developed for use in schools across the region.

Testimonials Just wanted to say how happy we were with our most recent move. We have moved 5 times in the past 7 years in the Torquay area and Geelong Removals did the best job, hands down! Lyn was such a pleasure to deal with on the phone and the guys were so efficient and happy doing their job - my stress levels melted the minute they showed up (right on the time mind you!) If you are moving and debating who to use, try Geelong Removals and you won’t be disappointed.
I would like to thank the team at Geelong Removals for your help with my recent move. I would particularly like to thank Adam and Nathan, my removalists for the day. They were punctual, polite, careful, efficient and extremely hard working. A credit to the company. I have no hesitation in recommending your service to others. Regards, Ron

Ground-breaking at Fyansford By NOEL MURPHY IT’S BEEN a long time in coming but Fyansford’s protracted cement works revamp as a new suburb is becoming a reality. Siteworks have blocked Hyland Street, the steep road between the Hamilton Highway and McCurdy road, as earthmoving plant and construction crews refashion the grade of the adjoining land. The 115-hectare Gen Fyansford project is the latest incarnation of what back in 2001 was meant to be a $300 million project by Perth developer Rob Moltoni before the division controlling the site went into receivership. The Fyansford Green project would have seen 2000 dwellings and an 11-hect-
are town centre, with the Moorabool River cutting through the site abutting Herne Hill. Rezoned in 2008, the Gen Fyansford project’s first stage development is well under way with around 120 blocks being prepared for housing beside Hyland Street. Further, much larger, housing sectors will be opened to the west – all up 1000 allotments – with parkland, a community centre, youth recreation park and adventure playground included in plans. Fyansford boasts a curious history which marketers have melded with modern amenities and lifestyle attributes in a slick online campaign. Fyansford was founded by pioneer Foster ‘Flogger’ Fyans, a commandant from
the notorious Norfolk Island penal camp, in 1837. Its historic bridge was built by John Monash, its cement works a fixture for a century and its Moorabool River diverted 25 years ago to allow for a mining expansion that never lasted. Right now, Hyland Street is closed as new water and sewerage pipelines are installed as part of $2 million works includes a 700 metre section of water pipeline and two kilometres of sewerage pipeline. The new pipelines will be located along Hyland and a number of streets in Herne Hill. Hyland Street will be closed until 4 August. I would prefer councillors to concentrate on the basics and especially, security at the Geelong Botanic Gardens. What has been done to locate and recover the two heritage bronze cranes stolen in that vandalism rampage? When will CCTV be installed with an after-hours security guard in place to prevent future attacks? When will the conservatory be finished? It was gutted 18 months ago and there is still a wire and shade-cloth fence around it. When will council send street sweepers around the suburbs on a weekly or fortnightly basis instead of the haphazard system now in place? The councillors need to remember they were elected to represent the people of their wards. Judith Fisher South Geelong
Messenger shot MR SACLIER (Letters 3 July) reads a lot into my rather short letter of 26 June, accusing me of objecting because I don’t like what he writes and being personally offended. Talk about shooting the messenger. I was in fact making the simple and clear point that all the denier arguments here seem to need to allege or imply hidden agendas, cover-ups and conspiracies to carry them. He then defends his ‘demonstration of ocean acidification declining’ writing about his messenger, ‘who had the experience to sense the deception he then exposed’. In other words, more conspiracy theory. You can get any information that pleases you on the web and I wrote that Mr Saclier’s suggestion to Google the term ‘NOAAgate’ is simply funnelling you to more conspiracy sites. To see what I mean, consider the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001. We all basically know what happened but Google ‘911gate’ and you’ll get wall-to-wall conspiracy sites insisting it was all a US government inside job. All covered up of course. You should Google Bob Carter too; you just might prefer to save your money than buy his book. Jukka Tuisku Barwon Heads

Electricity bills still carbonated THE FINANCIAL year has just ended. Twelve months ago we were reminded in two of the glossy brochures distributed by Sarah Henderson that with the abolition of the “carbon tax“, our electricity bills would be reduced on average by $550 per year. Now is the time to check your electricity bills for the past year and see if you can find the $550 reduction. I am sure that you will not unless you have taken your own initiative by reducing your usage. You may find a figure on the bill from your supplier referring to a discount related to the “Carbon Price Threshold but if you add these amounts for each bill over the period
WHY do warmists so desperately want global warming to be true? Why do they try and close down any discussion and disregard blatant truths such as the Earth stopped warming after the El Nino of 1998? Why is there an avalanche of catastrophic doom and gloom predictions hitting the headlines every day? Some food for thought: Christine Stewart, former Canadian Minister of the Environment 1988: “No matter if the science of global warming is all phony‌ climate change provides the greatest opportunity to bring about justice and equality in the world.â€? UN Lima climate change conference 2014 Peruvian host president, Eva Morales: “We have to get at the fundamental roots of the problem of climate change. We don’t want more protocols; we want more structural solutions, overcoming capitalism, saving the peoples of the world.â€? UN climate chief Christiana Figuerres 2014: “Democracy is a poor political system for fighting global warming. Communist China is the best model.â€? Naomi Klein, interview on “Climate&Capitalism. comâ€?, May 2015: Q: So is there no way to fight climate change without fighting capitalism? A: No, I don’t think there is a way. Peter Rees Bell Park
POWERLESS: Electricity bills are still high despite the absence of the carbon tax, a reader says. they will not reach anywhere near $550. Where did the $550 go? Perhaps it was never ever going to exist.
Choice I MUST question the statement by Amanda (Letters 26 June) that homosexuals are born that way. I assure Amanda that she was not born with her life predetermined. She was born with a free-will and has the power to control her own destiny and coming from a complete line of heterosexual forebears might well expect to have a similar disposition. In my counselling experience I have found that the introduction of men to these sexual practices has come through nurture not nature. This happens in their formative years or in times of emotional difficulty. All people want a safe, secure and permanent environment where couples share in love and support. Unfortunately this is less likely in homosexual relationships. Andrew Bolt reports that a survey in the book ‘The Male Couple’, found that of the 156 couples interviewed, most had intended to be faithful to their partner but only seven still were. The National Lesbian Longitudinal Family Study found such unions fail at double the rate of heterosexual couples.

But it has gone from Sarah Henderson’s latest glossy brochure. I wonder why? Robert Packett Torquay
All behaviour can be learned and unlearned. Although difficult, it is possible with the help of God and the cognitive application of the Gospel to enter into a more ‘God designed’ and productive lifestyle. Pastor Frank Lowry, Aberdeen St Baptist Church
Red heart THANK you to all our supporters who went red for women during June. On behalf of the Heart Foundation, I would like to send a heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Go Red for Women campaign. Go Red for Women is the Heart Foundation’s annual awareness and fundraising campaign that shines a light on the area of heart disease in women. It is our attempt to save the lives of Australian women from this debilitating, chronic disease. Heart disease is the single biggest killer of Australian women but with the help of the community we can help to educate more women about the ways they can reduce their risk. With the support of the community we can help defeat heart disease in Australian women. Diana Heggie Chief Executive Officer Heart Foundation Victoria
Tarnished image ALL THE focus of attention is on the “welfare of drug users in the AFL, as if they are children rather than adults albeit with little or no sense of responsibility or professionalism. What about the image and welfare of AFL football, itself? Inadequate attention is given to the impact that continuing stories of systemic drug use and abuse by AFL players has on the public perception of the code. If AFL management does not quickly resolve this issue, you can kiss goodbye to any hope of this troubled sport ever becoming a fair dinkum long term national product, let alone an international one. Angelic riffs in a classic mode By NOEL MURPHY ROCK’S lead guitarists are a breed of their own. Showmen, riffmasters, technical artisans, they’re often the heart and soul of a band, their soaring, growling and shredding solos often the hallmark of a band’s songs or even the band itself. The Angels’ Rick Brewster will tell you a decent lead guitar solo has a start, a middle and a finish – all properly phrased and sorted to match the underlying rhythm and chords structure. He’s not one for rough improvisation, it’s his classical music beginnings, he wants his breaks to be recognisable musical works in their own right. But even he was gobsmacked playing at Le Forum in Paris earlier this year – in the City of Light for the first time in 35 years – when the crowds sang every note of his lead breaks, plus the words to every song the band performed. “It was the last thing we expected,” he says. “We were excited because we’d sold out Paris but to have the whole audience, from the very first song, screaming the guitar melodies – I’d never heard that in my whole career. “It was quite emotional. It nearly blew us through the back wall, it wasn’t just solos but all
the lyrics including our new songs. “They had to be fans from when we played there with Cheap Trick in 1980. A lot of people said ‘We’ve been waiting 35 years’. They’ve stayed with the music and they’ve been buying the new albums.” Such is the strength of The Angels’ hold on their audiences. Fans all attest to the raw, powerful drive and hypnotic lyrics of their music – as does its ability to survive even the loss of legendary frontman Doc Neeson. Of course, it’s the songs – classics such as Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again?, Shadow Boxer, No Secrets, Dogs Are Talking, We Gotta Get Out of This Place and a raft of hard-rocking faves – that continue to sustain the band into its 40th year. For Rick Brewster, guitarwork remains as much fun as ever. He might have started out on piano but he decided when the band first padded up for action that he was going to be the lead guitarist. “I basically taught myself guitar. I said to John and Doc I wanted to be lead guitar, you could make that call when you started back then, but I was right in the deep end – we’d already been booked for tours. “I learned guitar, invented melodies in my head and worked
out how to play them. I listened to players like Angus and Clapton and Hendrix but they were never really a major influence, I didn’t come through the usual channels. “I had no time for lessons and my strategy on the road was basically classical piano. Solos came from my classical background. I’d write a solo like a piece of music, the objective was a solo you could sing and remember, which I suppose is why the guys in Paris were all singing.” Like any lead guitarist, Brewster loves his machines. He’s had all sorts down the years but his favourites were an Epiphone Sheraton and a Gibson SG, until they were stolen – along with all the band’s gear and their truck – in Chicago back in the 80s. He’s used Hamers, PRS, Upfold, Redback, even another Ephipone Sheraton although it wasn’t quite the same. “A year ago, I gave PRS another shot,” he says. “I’ve got a new guitar I’m now playing with, a beautiful double cutaway, a neck that’s really smooth with a beautiful action and a new pickup configuration that’s really clever.” Yep, sounds like a lead guitarist. You can catch Rick Brewster and the rest of The Angels at Geelong’s Gateway Hotel on Saturday 25 July.

Crystals shine By NOEL MURPHY “WELL, he walked up to me “And he asked me if I wanted to dance “He looked kinda nice “And so I said, ‘I might take a chance’ ….. Even 50 years later, these lyrics are immediately identifiable to millions of people around the world. They might not remember the band but most will also readily remember the chorus: “And then he kissed me.” The band was The Crystals, a New York girl band which exploded onto the early sixties hit parade in tandem with one of rock’s greatest producers, Phil Spector. They belted out a string of hits, the best known of them including He’s a Rebel and Da Do Ron Ron before various members parted ways to family and other considerations.
Not Dee Dee Kenniebrew, though. Half a century later, she’s still there, fronting a legendary band that’s thrilling audiences around the globe. Unlike contemporaries such as the unkindly-tagged Strolling Bones, she’s no craggy-faced crooner but rather a mature, smooth-faced and energetic performer who still whips up and down her home’s stairs non-stop every day. It’s fair to say she’s proud of the fact, too. “I haven’t been in the gym for almost a year which is awful, it’s terrible, but I’ve been so busy in the last year,” she told the Independent from New York. “I live in a house that’s three levels and I’m up-down all the time. My cleaning lady said the other day, ‘I admire you, I can’t believe you’ but I don’t even think about it, it doesn’t faze me.” Kenniebrew’s been singing
since she was a tot and she’s not about to stop. “What else am I going to do?” she laughs. Had music not raised its head when she was young, she might have been a psychiatrist or somesuch, she says. “But it drew me to it. Fate. It was nothing I intended on doing but the opportunity become available and I was there. “As a young girl, my mom and my mom’s sister sang on the radio, not all the time but occasionally, and so I did, as little girls do. At times I’d be singing around my mom but I was shy of singing to others. “She recommended me to a guy who was asking around for girls who were singers. She said ‘I have a daughter who sings’ and that was that.” The Crystals will perform at GPAC on Friday 7 August. CRYSTAL CLEAR: The Crystals bring their familar tunes to Geelong.

The Peninsula
Three artists for the Price of one GLOBE-TROTTING singer, songwriter Rick Price will showcase his talents at GPAC later this month after a sell-out whistle-stop tour of Europe and the United States. The multi-talented instrumentalist will headline a show that includes host Greg Champion, an entertainer with a devilish sense of humour as well as being a talented song writer. Mike Rudd, an Australian music icon drawing on his experience of five decades in the industry rounds off a gifted trio that will rock Geelong on 25 July. Price, who has been based in the States for years, is back in Australia for a month-long tour of Victoria where he will showcase his talents, vocal and instrumental in Geelong. Price has achieved worldwide hits with Not a Day Goes By, Heaven Knows, River of Love and Walk Away Renee. The award winning artist will perform in styles to suit all tastes with well-known favourites Fragile, A House Divided and Bridge Building Man. Rick who has received numerous music awards, including album and song of the year will sing much-loved hits from his eight albums and a selection of songs from his latest album Tennessee Sky. Greg’s also a Champion performer and his talent extends beyond humour as he has penned a myriad
of songs, humorous and serious and is keen to present them in Geelong. Rudd will add to the variety with some of his hit songs from Ariel and Spectrum days, including his much loved classic hit I’ll Be Gone. The trio will appear at Geelong Performing Arts Centre, phone 5225 1200.

INSPIRED: Amber Daly with one of her works.
Muse of Geelong proves prolific ARTIST Amber Daly was so inspired by her recent move to Geelong she created a series of works to celebrate the occasion. Daly said she had been so motivated by the many new experiences, connections and relationships resulting from the move she produced a series of paintings and drawings. “This is my first exhibition in Geelong and I felt it was important to show some of the work I created during the first few months of moving to Geelong, especially the Waterfront-themed paintings,” Daly explained. Also on show will be interior and still life works, includ-

ing containers and furniture from Daly’s new studio, as well as four new digital print editions of earlier paintings. Daly creates with a sense of urgency and exhilaration in the act of painting itself. “I find this integral to my practice. I use colour, line and gesture as a device to express my thoughts, feelings and reactions. “My work is often described as ‘immediate’ and ‘playful’ and this way of working comes naturally, allowing me to quickly lay down marks and capture a direct response to my subject.” Daly has also begun a Masters of Fine Art at RMIT, making this

a fertile time of creative experimentation and new ideas. She lists her main influences as Tony Tuckson, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Willem De Kooning, Angela Brennan and Marise Maas. “I’m excited to be showing work in Geelong for the first time,” Daly said. “I believe for an artist there is so much opportunity to be had and contributions to make to the growing art scene here.” Daly’s solo exhibition Paintings and Drawings is at Metropolis Gallery from 17 July to 1 August.

ROLLERWAY Skate Centre makes kids parties super easy for mums and dads. Just five minutes from the Geelong CBD, Rollerway Skate Centre hosts the perfect party ideal for five to 15 year olds. The three-hour parties include admission, catering, a birthday greeting, roller-skate or rollerblade hire and party bags. Kids can enjoy great music and a light show with a mix of amusing games – and parents can join in on the skating action too. Centre manager Ashlie Aparicio grew up having parties at the skating centre herself, and now enjoys serving over 10,000 party kids every year. “It’s so rewarding seeing young children come in to have a bit of fun and turning them into skaters in almost no time. “We have so many roller skaters and rollerbladers coming back time and time again, and it’s great to see how popular skating has remained over the years. “It’s a really fun and safe activity for kids of all ages,” she says. Ashlie said that parents often comment on how easy and fun the experience is. “Parents really enjoy having a coffee while their kids are out there having a ball,” she says. Standard parties are $15 per person. The deluxe package for just $3 extra per child adds “bottomless” drinks, an icy pole each for the kids, an ice-cream cake and little gifts for all the party guests. Rollerway Skate Centre is at

The led pony party runs with all the same activities, the only difference being the group share their ponies … perfect for bigger groups or smaller kids. Those with an adventurous spirit, but who want something different to horse riding, relish in an adventure party. Choose three action options to make a party
that suits you. This party is a massive hit with the boys. IF YOU’RE looking for the next venue to host your kid’s birthday party, look no further. The Rock Adventure Centre hosts two-hour parties including lolly bags, soft drinks and a birthday cake. All parties are fully equipped and supervised by friendly rock instructors. Business owner Richard Lodge has 23 years of climbing experience under his belt and is about to see the company celebrate its 14th birthday this September. He says the response to previous birthday parties has been fantastic and that party guests often took up climbing as their sport afterwards. “We often hear kids say to their parents, ‘I want to have my party here!’ as they’re leaving. “I’ve even got guys who work for me now who first came in for a birthday party,” Richard said. Parents have also given a wonderful response and enjoy seeing
their kids doing something different. With parties running most weekends, Richard recommends booking two weeks in advance to secure dates. If you’re looking to add a level of excitement, upgrade and add the ‘big wall abseil’ party extra to your function. Party cost is $25 per head with
a minimum of 10 people. A selfcatering option is also available at an additional $35, with crockery and cutlery supplied. The Rock Adventure Centre is open from 4pm to 9.30pm Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm on Saturdays and 1pm to 5pm on Sundays, at 403 (River End) Pakington Street, Newtown, Geelong. Car Servicing & Mechanical Repairs Customer Courtesy Service
CAR SERVICES, brake checks, fixing clutches getting these jobs done quickly, efficiently and easily requires a solid handful of essentials. One is location, or being able to get to and from the mechanic shop readily. Another is quick access by the mechanic shop to spare parts, which can readily trim a day off the wait for a car’s return. A third consideration is quality work, the fourth is friendly extra care and the fifth is courtesy pick-up and drop-off. Geelong Brake and Clutch’s Denis and Lesley Williams have made meeting each of these points articles of faith at their South Geelong, business. Their clients don’t have to fight city traffic to get to them. Expert advice and product knowledge for all makes and models of vehicles – including off-road and heavy duty vehicles – makes GBC an easy choice. Superior customer service and care is the icing on the cake. GBC offers: brake rotors and pads plus rotor machining; drum brake kits and machining; clutch replacement kits and flywheel machining; and an extensive range of suspension parts; driveshaft replacement kits; and a brake and clutch hose fabrication service, all covering most vehicle makes and models including commercial vehicles and 4WDs. “We have a large range of brake and clutch parts usually on hand, making us quicker, easier to access and we take extra care of our customers,” Lesley says. “We go the extra mile to make people realise that they are important to us. And safety is the key issue too, as we all use the road”. “We‘re also happy to do no-obligation quotes.” Geelong Brake and Clutch is at 8 Dowsett St, phone 5222 7411.

Carnival on the move to future By EWAN KENNEDY THE first all-new Kia Carnival in almost 10 years was long overdue when it arrived in Australia early in 2015. But rest assured the intervening decade hasn’t been wasted. Huge strides in body design and engineering have been made globally and the new Kia Carnival people mover has advanced significantly when compared with the old stager it has finally replaced. In fact, there’s one important area in which the big South Korean marques – Kia and its parent company Hyundai – have moved ahead faster than any other car maker. Quality of finish. The Japanese probably still outperform the Koreans in this way, but only by a small margin. To get a European vehicle that’s as well made as a Korean one you have to buy in the top end of the market and pay many tens of thousands of dollars more. All-new Carnival has style, and plenty of it. No longer is this a box on wheels bought by the family that needs – rather than wants – a people mover. We love the big bold radiator grille and squared-off front of the new Carnival. The rear-side area has the newly fashionable slim window design and this ties in nicely with a rear end that’s shaped to appeal, yet is squared off and sensible. In a quest for easier driving and parking the Carnival’s body is slightly shorter and lower than before, but sits on a longer wheelbase to stretch the legroom in the cabin. Headroom is still plentiful. Seat layout is two individual seats in front; three in the centre row; two reasonable units in the back. The centre row has its two outer pews slightly wider than the centre seat. The centre seat backrest can be folded down to form a table, or can be removed altogether to give stretch out elbow room. There’s good luggage length

Official fuel consumption numbers are 11.6 and 7.7 litres per hundred kilometres respectively. Clever design results in Kia’s all-new Carnival being more an eight seat sedan than it is a people mover. It provides impressive comfort, space and quality of ride. Entry and exit to the front two rows of seats is simple.

and volume and various configurations of passenger / cargo space are offered. The rearmost three seats have a 60/40 split arrangement, one or both sections can be folded completely flat to provided uninterrupted boot space. There’s stretch out legroom that gives the sort of space you normally only get in a limousine. Ease of entry to the rearmost seats is better than average, though this area is probably best left to the younger and nimbler. Space in the rear seat is good without being outstanding, but that’s not unusual in this class. Even with all seats in use there is still good luggage space. Carnival has a full suite of crash avoidance or mitigation features, including rollover mitigation and brake cornering control. Big people movers need plenty of power when loaded with people and stacks of stuff. Kia has been smart in offering Carnival with a 3.3-litre V6 petrol or a big torque 2.2-litre turbodiesel. Power outputs are 206 kW (petrol) and 147 kW (diesel). More important are the torque numbers, a very useful 336 Newton metres for the petrol and a huge 440 Nm from the diesel.

Warriors hit the road to turn around the season By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong will become road Warriors this week to take on Avondale FC. With seven rounds left of the season the Warriors will need to find a way to win if they stand a chance of resurrecting their 2015 campaign. Avondale is coming off a 1-3 home loss to Northcote. Avondale’s defence doesn’t leak goals often and it would be a surprise if it opened up, especially at home. In their short rivalry, North Geelong and Avondale have had some memorable matches, from the 2013 State League 1 relegation playoff, the Warriors stirring 3-0 victory at Avondale in 2014 and the penalty fest earlier this year at Elcho Park resulting in a 2-1 win for Avondale. North Geelong comes off a disappointing 2-0 loss last Friday at the hands of Pascoe Vale. Although starting positively and in attacking mode, the Warriors endeavour was all undone in 12 minutes through two moments of poor decision making.
LONG BALL: North Geelong’s Reardo Luka tries a long shot. Picture: IVAN DUGANDZIC In the 28th minute North Geelong’s centre backs were caught out of position, forcing Nicholas Jurcic to sprint back hard to defend an anticipated cross. Unfortunately he ended up bundling the ball under Daniel Zilic who was coming out to cut off the cross. The match fast became an unsavoury affair with
North Geelong increasingly frustrated by what it considered to be a series of dubious calls around the park. Players were upset by a yellow card in the 32nd minute for an incident in front of the referee by Joseph Youseff on Warrior Nikola Jurkovic. But on 40 minutes it was that man Youseff who took the score to 2-0. North Geelong’s defence was out of position and pushed up high as a delightful through ball to Youssef split five North Geelong players to allow him to advance towards goal unchallenged and slot past Zilic. The second half saw the Warriors holding the majority of control but unable to build any real threat. The North Geelong attack consisted mainly of hopeful long balls leaving too much for the forwards to do and opening itself up to counter attack. With the Pascoe Vale defence holding resolute and seemingly content with its 2-0 lead, the match petered out to the final whistle.
WITH the weather on the weekend taking a turn for the worse many anglers took advantage of the Barwon Estuary. The estuary has had a fantastic run of large 1.5kg Australian salmon moving up and down it with the incoming tide. Trent Shiller put in a few hours last Friday casting a Z-Man grub from the banks of the river around the Barwon Heads boat ramp where he landed a well-conditioned Australian salmon just on 1kg which proved to be quite a handful on 2kg line. Other anglers have found fishing from the Barwon Heads Bridge productive although lifting a hooked salmon over 1kg up to the bridge is a whole other challenge. Heading down the Surf Coast anglers achieved a mixed bag, with some 2kg salmon taken from spinning the surf beaches. Surf Coast is dotted with many little estuary systems holding a variety of species and can be a great option on days of more wild weather. Craig Varker was fishing scrub worms lightly weighted at one of these systems on Sunday where he took a beastly bream of 1.3kg and 41cm. Heading inside Port Phillip Bay, anglers have been on the hunt for squid with Indented Heads offering specimens to 1kg on size 3 jigs worked slowly over reef patches in four to five metres of water. On the hunt for larger Southern Bluefin tuna Mark Stewart made the trip up to Bermagui. Venturing 80kms offshore and in 4000 metres of water Mark and his companions started trolling skirted lures. Not having to wait too long, the guys had an impressive four-way hook up, resulting in three tuna being boated. Mark’s tuna tipped the scales at 73kg, making all those kilometres and hard work worthwhile. Closer to home Portland and Port Fairy still hold respectable numbers of smaller school sized Bluefin tuna. On BOATED: Mark Stewart the calmer days anglers with his weighty tuna. casting stick-bait lures such as the Storm So-Run minnows into frenzied surface commotion have boated tuna to 15kg. Local freshwater fishing was excellent last week with St Augustine’s in Waurn Ponds providing plenty of action for kids on school holidays. Baiting up with power bait on a lightly weighted running sinker rig those fishing the lake margins had no dramas in catching rainbow trout to 30cm. Down the road at Wurdee Boluc the water level is on the rise and the redfin have fired up once again. Casting Fish Arrow soft plastics on heavy heads was responsible for redfin to 1.5kg being landed. Tackleworld Geelong staff member Michael Moore travelled down to Lake Bullen Merri last Sunday where he boated Chinook salmon to 1kg trolling lures down deep at eight metres with the aid of a down rigger. Next week if the weather allows anglers should head down the Western District and make the most of the tuna while they are still around. Closer to home the surf beaches will be worth a cast or two for Australian salmon as well as the lower reaches of the Barwon Estuary. Wurdee Boluc is hard option to go past for the freshwater anglers with both trout and redfin on the chew.

GEELONG’S cat nap finally comes to an end when it meets North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night after a 20-day break. Only the two points Geelong received for the cancelled game against Adelaide in respect for the shocking death of coach Phil Walsh separates the Cats from North Melbourne. Recent games between the two have often been tight tussles, even though the scoreboard margin may have opened up at times. Match ups between the blue and white stripes and hoops are usually intense affairs and given the respective ladder positions this will be no different. The noises coming from the Kangaroos camp are all centred on responding from the meek 55 point drubbing at the hands of the lowly Gold Coast Suns last week. North Melbourne beat Geelong in the meeting between the two in round four at Simonds Stadium in the Stevie J substitute game. Geelong was missing Jimmy Bartel, Tom Lonergan, Mathew Stokes and Andrew Mackie in that game but all will be front and centre this week. Geelong coach Chris Scott declared Bartel a certain starter after his stellar comeback in the VFL last week. “He’s missed a lot of footy but he was exceptionally good in the VFL last week, so that’s a little bit of a pointer to what we’ll see on Saturday night,“ Scott said. “But we’ve played virtually the whole season without him. Hopefully he’ll come in and add something rather than be the player that we build our whole game around.“ Scott also nominated James Kelly, who suffered a high ankle sprain against Port Adelaide in round 11, as probable for the Roos clash. The extended break, coming on top of a scheduled bye, “presented some challenges but presented some opportunity as well,” Scott acknowledged. “If you look back over our year, the numbers certainly show that off short breaks, we’ve been good and off longer breaks, we haven’t been so good,“ Scott said. “The coaching staff have a responsibility to assess it but I don’t think we need to plant that seed in the mind of our players. “I’ve got a bit of respect for their football intellect and they understand what we’re walking into on Saturday night.“ The coach admitted his side had been itching to get out on the ground after the unexpected loss to Melbourne in the Corey Enright 300 milestone. The break will be 20 days by the time the Cats run on to Etihad Stadium on Saturday night. “We worked on some aspects of our game we wouldn’t have been able to do if we had a game on the weekend. “The competition is evenly poised. It gets harder and harder for us. North has been particularly good at Etihad under the roof.”
