KEYSBOROUGH Golf Club will seek to carve its greenwedge course into a housing estate as part of a proposed windfall sale to a property developer. On 29 June, 85 per cent of members voted in favour of the deal with developer Intrapac, which is expected to yield $40 million for the club and its shareholders. As part of the deal, the club would move from its 60-year home to a yet to be built golf course and training centre about 2.5 kilometres away at 256-356 Pillars Road. The proposal is certain to attract controversy; it hinges on the club’s existing 76-hectare site on Springvale and Hutton roads being rezoned from green wedge by the State Government. The government has a publicly-stated intent to preserve the current urban growth boundary. Under Greater Dandenong Council’s green wedge management plan, the council’s preferred use for the land is recreational, sport or rural residential. The minimum subdivision size is a capacious four hectares. “It’s far from a fait accompli,” says club captain Darrell Swindells. “It is probably an eight to 10year project but there’s no promise the rezoning will happen. “If it can be done, we’ve got a good opportunity to make the golf club immune from financial stress for many future generations.” Greater Dandenong’s Councillor Peter Brown said he would back rezoning the golf course as well as nearby green wedge land south of Hutton Road. “People are sitting on a gold mine and can’t realise their assets. “One thing I’d say to the
greenies is that if rezoning was to occur as it occurred with the Somerfield and Crystal Waters estates is that 10-20 per cent of it would be public open space. “The council would also have to work very closely (with the developer) to ensure the protection of the fantastic trees on the site.” Piret Cantwell, who neighbours the current course, says she’ll fight the proposal which would dramatically alter her picturesque surrounds. “I am very keen to ensure the urban growth boundary remains as is. That is the reason we moved here 11 years ago. “The golf club has a significant number of mature trees and is the home to magnificent wildlife and it would be devastating if this was destroyed.” Defenders of the South-East Green Wedge secretary Barry Ross feared the move could set an unwanted precedent to carve up the region’s green wedge. “Once you let one (project) go, there’s a domino effect.” He said the golf course was a “nice part of the world” with “wonderful river redgums and Aboriginal scar trees”. “The fact that it’s there makes people feel good.” Mr Ross said it was “intriguing” that Intrapac had failed to mention plans for a golf course on a planning application to resubdivide the proposed Pillars Road site. Intrapac has applied to the council to re-subdivide 116.5 hectares of green-wedge agricultural land into four blocks, including a 74-hectare ‘Lot 4’ that the Journal believes is earmarked for the golf club. It argues the new layout will provide opportunity for “sustainable farming activities” and for a “broader range of agricultural activities ... especially on proposed lot 4”.

Job loss protesters head for Nissan HQ By CASEY NEILL WORKERS at Nissan’s Dandenong South parts warehouse will fly to Japan in a bid to keep their jobs. Joe Doherty and his colleagues found out at 1pm on Friday 3 July that Nissan would outsource to CEVA Logistics. “I’m 58 so I don’t know how I’ll get another job,” he said. Mr Doherty said workers felt so strongly they were considering a trip to Nissan’s head office in Japan to confront management about the decision and ask them to reverse it. There’ll be about 40 redundancies at Dandenong South and 58 across Australia. “This is how strong we feel about saving our jobs,” shop steward Judi Blackwell said. “This is not part of the automotive industry collapse. Warehousing is alive and strong. “We’ve met all our KPIs. We always meet our targets. “This is about Nissan outsourcing for cheaper labour.” Ms Blackwell said some staff had worked at the warehouse for 25 years. “They’re currently releasing the new Navara. Even right now the people are out there on the floor working so hard to get to the dealers the parts that are required for this new car,” she said. “While the people are out there working hard they’re outsourcing. “None of these people will find another job. There are no jobs in the south-east. “We hope that they’ll reconsider. That’s the best case scenario. We’re going to give it a shot.” Rob Classon has worked at the warehouse for six years.
A SPRINGVALE South man has been convicted and fined $2500 after ripping the bedcovers off his naked wife and punching her in front of his adult son. A court was told on Monday 6 July that after protracted marital problems, the wife had accused her husband of cheating on her late on 16 May. After their 19-year-old son arrived in the bedroom, the accused flung back the
Second man charged A SECOND man has been charged with murder over the shooting death of a man in Keysborough last month. Police arrested a 24-year-old Keysborough man and a 25-year-old Cranbourne South woman at Melbourne Airport, about noon on Friday. The man has been charged with murder and will face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this afternoon. The woman remains in custody. It comes after 25-year-old Omer Cicekdaj, of Doncaster East, was charged with murder late last month. Homicide Squad detectives had been investigating the death of father-of-three Ali Duyar, who was found collapsed in Bloomfield Road with a gunshot wound to his upper body on the evening of 10 June. He died later that night in The Alfred hospital.
Luxury car crime spree
Shop steward Judi Blackwell has slammed Nissan's plans. 141394 “We work hard to get the product out for the customers and this is how they treat us - throwing us on the s*** pile.” “I’m 48 this year and it’s going to be tough for me to go out and find another job.” Ngoc Tran has a seven-week-old baby and Alistair Gayles spent six years in casual employment before securing a full-time position at Nissan. “It’s as busy as it’s ever been here,” he said. “We want to stay loyal. We want to work at Nissan.” Narre Warren man Alex Plain said most employees had a lease car deal with the company. He only recently sold his car to take up the offer and convinced his
partner to do the same. “Now we’ve got to go out and buy new cars,” he said. “This job meant everything to me. “It leaves me back in the rat race like a lot of other Australians who can’t get full-time work. “Things are just getting tougher.” Shop steward Tom Costello, a Nissan employee for four years, said CEVA was unlikely to maintain the warehouse. “The operations will probably move to one of their facilities. I think it will probably head to the western suburbs,” he said. In a statement, Nissan Australia said the change followed a parts warehousing and logistics operations review.
Picture: KIM CARTMELL It concluded Nissan could only improve its competitiveness in these areas through significant investments in distribution and IT infrastructure, and property upgrades to meet increasingly stringent safety, technical and environmental compliance. But Mr Doherty said management knew long ago that improvement works were needed and didn’t spend the money. The statement also said Nissan had offered staff assistance relating to re-employment outside Nissan. Workers will stage a rally at Nissan, corner Frankston-Dandenong Road and Quality Drive, Dandenong South, on Saturday 11 July at 10.30am.

bedsheets exposing his wife. As she got up to put on pyjamas, she was punched to the right side of her face by the accused, police prosecutor Senior Constable Joshua Diemar said. The man later told police he pushed his wife with an open hand to “get her away”, Sen Const Diemar said. The man pleaded guilty to assault and persistently breaching the subsequent intervention order protecting his wife by making 119
calls to her between 30 May and 3 June. Up to 73 calls were made in one day; none were threatening, the court was told. He also sent multiple texts saying how sorry he was and how he missed the victim. The accused was arrested after returning to the home on 5 July - also in breach of the order. His defence lawyer told the court that his cli-
ent worked seven days a week to support his family but was “bedevilled by this persistent accusation by his wife that he’s unfaithful to her”. “He means her no harm,” his lawyer said. Dandenong magistrate Barry Schultz condemned the man for “humiliating” his wife of 20 years but was willing to accept that his actions were out of character. He took into account that the majority of the nonthreatening contacts were to

A MAN has been charged in Noble Park after police discovered he was carrying a pen gun. Patrolling police stopped to talk to the 31-year-old man as he walked along Heatherton Road about 12.45pm on Tuesday 30 June before officers noticed a metal object in his jacket pocket. On closer inspection the object was found to be a pen gun and the man was arrested.

“patch up the relationship” though their persistence could indicate that the husband had a controlling nature and wanted to psychologically disturb the victim. Mr Schultz said the accused - who had no relevant prior convictions - regarded the wife’s “unwarranted and persistent accusation” of unfaithfulness as a “thorn in his side”. The man received a “significant” fine as a general and specific deterrence.
FIVE teenagers from Dandenong and Casey have been arrested after a number of highend cars were stolen and used in a dramatic crime spree throughout the suburbs in the past week. Starting on 5 July, a 2015 Mercedez Benz C200, a 2011 Audi Q5, a 2010 Audi A3, a 2015 Subaru Liberty and a Hyundai Santa Fe were stolen during car-jackings and thefts. The cars were then used in a series of attacks, robberies and house burglaries. During one incident a victim was confronted in the Dandenong Plaza car park during which his attackers demanded that he hand over the keys to his Holden Commodore. When the victim refused, the offenders smashed his car with a stick and ran off. Another ugly attack saw a 14-year-old robbed of personal items in Dunblane Road, Noble Park. Some of the cars were stolen from homes after the thieves broke into properties and took the car keys. Suburbs including Mulgrave, Prahran, and Malvern were all hit, while the Mercedez was stolen from a Hallam property. The investigation is continuing. Five teens aged between 16 and 17 were arrested in the early hours of Thursday morning. Two have been remanded in custody and the others have been charged and bailed.

Dawn rises on songs of faith and harmony UNDER its motto of ‘Many Faiths, One People’ and now in its 26th year, the Interfaith Network of the City of Greater Dandenong – the oldest interfaith network in Australia – has faithfully served the local community. Initially as the Faith Communities of the City of Springvale then later as the City of Greater Dandenong Interfaith Network, this diverse group of faith and spiritual leaders in equal but independent partnership with the council has witnessed many changes over that time. The Interfaith Network is proud to contribute to the wellbeing of all who live in this city by bringing peace, harmony and understanding in the community. One of the greatest areas of change has come from growth in the popular tours to places of worship. From conducting one of two tours per year in the early 1990s to now conducting on average 27 tours per year, these interfaith experiences offer the wider community a special opportunity to understand the diverse faith and spiritual traditions lived and celebrated in the City of Greater Dandenong. In the latest development, the network is to embark on a tours training program with people

from asylum seeker and refugee backgrounds. Funded by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship and strongly supported by the council, this program aims to train participants as volunteer tour guides. It will provide an opportunity for participants to positively engage in social activities, learn about different faiths and spiritual traditions as well as share their own experiences, providing an enriching encounter for everyone who participates. The network has also been developing a preventative faith-based family violence resource kit over the past three years. Educating to change attitudes about family violence and gender inequality is crucial and urgent.
Through their role of caring and being vitally connected to their communities, faith and spiritual leaders are significantly positioned to guide and influence positive changes in these sorts of areas. As important role models to their communities, faith leaders seek to deal with issues that tear families and communities apart. Underpinning any activity or event is the wonderful essence of what holds such an Interfaith Network together. It is the compassion and love of people of faith and spiritual conviction who are prepared to regard those of a different faith with respect and dignity and who are open to living in harmony with those who are different from themselves. They are prepared to understand that other faiths and spiritual traditions can teach them something and that together they can learn much about each other. Interfaith connections such as those found in the Interfaith Network are, at their core, about relationship. Found in the everyday lives of the large majority of people in the pew/ mosque/ synagogue/ temple /gurdwara/ street are people who are all
contributing to living together in harmony. Implementing any practical interfaith initiative is only possible because there is a network of goodwill, trust and friendship in place. This is so important because at times of stressful community upheaval this ongoing commitment to understanding each other acts in a preventative way rather than in a reactionary manner where difficulties and tensions are further exacerbated. At its annual gathering of all faith and spiritual leaders, the network follows the United Nation’s theme. This year’s theme is International Year of Light - to which the network has added Spreading Rays of Hope. It is the Interfaith Network’s hope that what it is - and what it does - offers that hope. “Faith is the bird that sings when the dawn is still dark,” Rabindranath Tagore said. Joan Walsh Anglund said: “A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer; it sings because it has a song.” Email tours@interfaithnetwork.org.au, phone 0408 571 483 or visit www.interfaithnetwork.org. au for tour inquiries or more information.
LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 8 July 1915 English Tourist in France PREVIOUS to the war huge sums of money were annually spent in France by English motorists during the touring season. Despite the war, the French authorities, recognising the importance of this annual influx of monied motorists and are appealing that English tourist should continue to make their annual trip. “The English will be received in France with enthusiasm, and we are arranging that hotels will be open in all interesting districts except of course in the military zones,
were it is impossible to travel by road or rail. “Certain formalities have to be gone through for the use of cars or long railway journeys. “However travellers are to be reassured that they will not meet with the Austro German element, and will continue to encounter the traditional kindness and hearty welcome of the French. Mrs Kidman of 37 Scott St lost 10 laying hens last Wednesday. Numerous other residents of the area have reported daylight raids by the killers, which have been identified and reports made to Dandenong City Council. Both dogs are said to be black. One is larger than the other. They have been seen frequently together. Mrs Kidman told the Journal yesterday the loss of her hens was a severe one. Apart from their value, they kept her and her sick husband supplied with eggs, which at today’s prices were a considerable item. Mrs Kidman added the dogs

were merely killers. They made no attempt, at least in her case, of carrying the poultry away for eating. 20 years ago 17 July 1995 Crime figures plunge CRIME in Dandenong has dropped almost 10 per cent in the past year. Statistics released last week showed reported crime in the year to June 30 had fallen 9.8 per cent, and the amount of crime cleared by police has increased 2.2 per cent. Mr Mason said: “The community perception should change as a result of this. It’s the most dramatic reduction in crime Dandenong has
had.... I’ve been here many years and can’t recall anything like it“. 5 years ago 12 July 2010 Cord safety kit DANDENONG households have ordered 231 of the 17,000 free safety kits distributed by Consumer Affairs Victoria to help reduce the danger of unsafe curtain and blind cords. THE fight against proposed onstreet parking meters in Springvale could become a council election issue, says a Greater Dandenong councillor. Cr Heang Tak said he doubted a majority of councillors would reverse April’s decision for a $470,000, 12-month parking meter trial. This is despite an energetic Springvale Asian Business Association (SABA) anti-meters campaign, which has collected about 2000 petition signatures in recent weeks. “To me the trial is a waste of ratepayers’ money,” Cr Tak said. “Because we may not have enough numbers to oppose it, we’d have to make it a council election issue.” Cr Tak said there was no evidence that meters would fulfil their stated purpose, which is to free up street parking and encourage more patronage into the under-utilised multi-deck No.8 car park. The meters are expected to raise about $900,000 annually from motorists, but Cr Tak didn’t think the council was motivated by “revenue raising”. “There is plenty of room in No.8 car park so the real issue is whether people will park there. “Councillors should listen to the real experts - they are the traders, the local shoppers and the other local residents who signed the petition. “With the economy not going well, this is what the traders need least.” Greater Dandenong councillor Youhorn Chea has also vowed to put the meters back on the agenda.

Cr Youhorn Chea is given an anti-meters petition by Daniel Cheng, while filmed by the locally-based Picture: ROB CAREW Cambodian Broadcasting Network on Friday. 141193 Cr Chea, who led a failed rescission motion against the meters in April, said meters would “destroy the reputation” of Springvale’s trading district. They would cause a customer exodus to free-parking shopping areas in Glen Waverley and Clayton, he said. Since the council’s resolution for meters, SABA had warned that traders would be “up in arms”. SABA president Daniel Cheng said the introduction of an ‘early
bird’ rate had already lured traders from on-street parking spots into No.8 car park. “We already know the local street parking should be made available for shoppers,” Mr Cheng said. “I don’t think it’s necessary to use meters. It would put off people straight away.” A council report in April stated that revenue from the meters would be put in a reserve fund for “facilities and amenity” in central Springvale.
The meters would help decongest on-street parking spots which are up to 97 per cent full on Fridays and Saturdays, the report stated. The $1.20-an-hour fees were expected to increase over the next four years in line with Dandenong’s parking rates. City planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman said the council had “noted” the opposing petition. The council plans to install the meters by the end of 2015, he said.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… What’s in a name: Greater Dandenong Council is defending the $17,000 cost of these temporary letters... Kim Cotter: $17,000 for a temporary sign? Why don’t we do things right the first time in this council? I’d be interested to hear from the mayor what the future uses of this lettering will be? Will there be more places needing a sign Harmony Square? And what is the cost of dismantling/reusing and storing this sign?

Her owner wheeled the woofer along the pavement in a shopping jeep, where she could keep a close eye on the papers. 141489 DANDENONG stalwart Roy Aspinall could borrow Mark Twain’s famous line last week: “The report of my death was an exaggeration”. The Journal received a call querying a rumour circulating that the former Highway Bowls owner had passed away. A quick call to the man himself confirmed Roy was not only still with us but was improving following a long health battle. DANDENONG and District Benevolent Society’s headquarters is bursting at the seams. “If a Dandenong person has a bigger place that would be all my prayers answered,” the Thomas Street op shop’s manager Margaret Ladner said. “I’ve got a shed - one the church gives me - and it’s full. "We’ve got no room in here.” Margaret is also looking for her successor after 32 years at the helm helping Dandenong’s most needy. Call the society on 9793 3736 to lend a hand.
DANDENONG disability service Wallara will star on television screens around Melbourne tonight (Monday). The third WallaraTV special will be broadcast at 6.30pm on Channel 31 to celebrate people of all abilities and showcase through personal stories the often-forgotten world of people with disabilities. Ben, Sam and Hayden host the 30 minute television program from Sages Cottage in Baxter, a 38 acre Wallara-run community farm that promotes social inclusion. SOME brave tweeting by a Springvale South credit-card customer last week. In a tweet addressed to well-known credit company, the ‘twit’ told the world he’d moved house, giving his name, new address and account number. A prime target for identity fraud, you’d think.
Mark Dalton: $17,000 would have been enough to put solar panels on the roof to furnish free energy for the building. City of Springvale had the same problem with Xmas decorations for the main street - complaints about good money spent on decorations for a month of the year. But if they didn’t put up any they would have got blasted too - can’t please everyone.
Peter Brown: Thanks Kim, I am glad I am not a voice in the wilderness. I would have thought for special events that the PEOPLE would be better able to use the grassed area rather than it being occupied by a large area of useless signage.
Greater Dandenong City Council: The sign is not really temporary as it will be kept in storage and brought out for special events in Harmony Square on a regular basis for years to come. We believe the sign is a beautiful and vibrant way to identify and brand the space that has become central to many community events in Dandenong.
Mayor Cr Sean O’Reilly: The lettering will be used on an ongoing basis during special events held in the civic square. The lettering is used as a highly visible way to communicate the name that was recently chosen.
Gill Williams: Oh my gosh really?! There are so many other good uses for this wasted money. Who agreed to a temporary sign costing $17,000?! They need to be held accountable for the waste of funds!

Relay baton By CASEY NEILL RELAY for Life might not go ahead in Greater Dandenong due to a lack of teams. The event committee is urging more people to sign up for the Cancer Council fund-raiser to be held at Ross Reserve Athletics Track in Noble Park from 3pm on Saturday 10 October to 9am on Sunday 11 October. Five teams have so far signed up – the Ashwood Walkers, the Dingley Dawdlers, Brothers in Arms, Oompa Loompas and
Curves Dandenong – but organisers are seeking at least another seven. The Greater Dandenong Girl Guide District has supported the event since it started seven years ago and will do so again this year. The Guides have been busily making bunting to decorate the gazebo at Ross Reserve. Each Guide received a square of material to decorate and write a message or thought on and they’re now sewn together to create bunting.
Raising funds for the Cancer Council is one of Greater Dandenong Girl Guides service projects. By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE Keysborough Freedom Club is turning 40 and one family has been there for it all. Married with three children, Braden and Robyn Williams may have first set eyes on each other when they were just two years old. The Freedom Club is etched deeply into the Williams family's history with almost everyone attending the occasional child care centre at some point. “I’ve been involved with the club almost my whole life,” Ms Williams said. “My husband, I and my three children have all attended the Keysborough Freedom Club.” Her mother and motherin-law were two of the first

mums to join and have had their children and grandchildren all cared for by the same women, Elaine Connolly. “Elaine looked after me as a baby and most likely my husband and then my own kids. “It’s a home like atmosphere, it’s not huge, it’s not institutional, I felt like I was dropping my kids off at home,” she said. “My oldest sister started in 1976, my cousin was the president and my kids started in December 2006 – which let me get the Christmas shopping done – and my youngest finished in 2013,” she said. Ms Williams said the ‘homey’ atmosphere had never changed. “The club hasn’t really
changed much at all and that’s a good thing. “All the lovely things have remained and it feels so nice sending my children somewhere I went and when they wouldn’t want to leave me I would say ‘this is where mummy and daddy and aunty and uncle went’ and that would help them feel better,” Ms Williams said. The Freedom Club is celebrating its 40th anniversary on Saturday 17 October and is calling for past families and friends of the club to join the celebration. Families can buy a commemorative brick to mark the occasion. To find out more contact the Keysborough Freedom Club on 9798 6696.

Words ease culture clash COMMUNITY LEADERS RECENTLY ADDRESSED POLICE ON HOW TO BETTER RELATE TO YOUNG PEOPLE AND THEIR PROBLEMS. THREE OF THE LEADERS SPOKE TO CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS ABOUT THE NEED FOR A RESPECTFUL SOLUTION. IT’S late at a public park where a group of 30 to 40 young people from an overseas background are drinking and descending into “argy-bargy”. Police arrive and they make a heightened risk assessment. Sometimes by their side is Willy Busari a Sudanese leader and community worker. He’s seen police handle these scenarios with varying degrees of success. His advice to police is for calm, not to approach young people as if they’ve committed a crime. Not to say “what are you guys doing here?” Mr Busari said police had a hard job – especially because some young people “come from different countries where they don’t trust the law”. “When you talk to them like a human being, the outcome is different.” Mr Busari said some young people had accumulated “thousands of dollars” in fines for public drinking and that such a regime was blunt and pointless. “The young people I know don’t even look at (the fine notices) because there are so many, so what’s the point of that?” Recently Mr Busari, along with six other leaders from “priority communities”, led a workshop for about 100 Vic-
toria Police officers based in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia. They were introduced by Superintendent Russell Barrett who oversees the south-east metro region, one of the most culturally diverse regions in Australia. He hopes all 700 police members in Melbourne’s southeast will sit the workshop. “I have a strong expectation, and there’s no wavering from it that you treat everyone fairly and with respect,” he told the forum’s officers. He instructed his members to “listen and learn” – acknowledging the challenge that police faced in working with and among so many cultures and languages. Anthony Sofe, a Samoan
“
Police and community leaders Anthony Sofe, Russell Barret, Willy Busari, Reem Hakeem, Hebba Elmasri, Joey Herrech, James Waterson, Biljana Komnenovic and Maha Sukkar band together at the forum. 136715 wards you”. Mr Sofe said it’s part of the family oriented culture – which is riled by seeing one of their clan being “mistreated”. “If you go into a family en-
WE HAVE A SAYING – ‘IF YOU HAVE NO WORDS, YOU SPEAK WITH YOUR HANDS’. IT’S A BAD SAYING… Anthony Sofe
chief and recruitment manager, also spoke at the workshop. His advice to police is not to just go in “handcuffing” people if there’s a fight at a family event – otherwise “you’ll have the whole family coming to-
vironment, you need to understand the culture. “You need to go to the person who’s the head of the family – the chief, the minister of faith or the president of the group.
“Once that person in authority speaks, everyone listens. It makes your job easier.” There’s a dual-edge to the family hierarchy because respectful youngsters bottle up their frustrations to the point that they get “out of control” when drunk. “Because of the respect, we won’t complain about our father. When we get out in society, our dad is not there. “You drink alcohol, you just relax. You get more expressive and violent. “We have a saying – ‘if you have no words, you speak with your hands’. It’s a bad saying.” Mr Sofe said police needed to challenge some young people. What they craved was to re-
spect – and be respected. “I believe every young person has a chance to make it. “Even those who come out of jail, I’ll give you a job – I look at you as a brother who needs a second chance. “I say to them ‘I need one thing from you – to speak to other young people and tell them that jail is not a cool thing’.” One of Mr Sofe’s concerns is about Pacific Islander youth being recruited by outlaw motorcycle gangs and that the young people were good at heart but were lured by the dollar. Another workshop guest was Muslim community advocate Reem Hakeem of Noble Park who acknowledges young Muslim males’ suspicions about
police. She understands how young male Muslims think police are “out to get them” either because of the police brutality in their homelands or their own sense of isolation. “Imagine yourself as a 19-year-old or a 20-year-old, they see the Reclaim Australia protests ... what they call the anti-Islamisation in Australia calling for no sharia law or no Halal food. “There are police raids. You wonder are they justified? Then they are sensationalised in the media. “Politicians like Cory Bernardi and Pauline Hanson say something negative. “My own 11-year-old asks why do they hate us? It affects them very badly. “Perhaps it requires police to say – we’re not targeting Muslims, we’re trying to keep everyone safe including yourself.” Ms Hakeem urged police not to assume they know all Muslims. She said she tries to share her appreciation for the police’s challenge – their attempts to accommodate the region’s immense cultural diversity while they “do their job”. “Police were talking about trying to be more approachable. Saying things like ‘I’m not stopping you for anything other than saying hello’. “To build that trust takes a lot of work. It was fascinating hearing of the police’s own struggles, trying to accommodate all the cultural diversity and do their job.”

DISPOSING of more than 10 syringes a week is just a part of the job for one local gardener. Noble Park resident of three years Eric Simmons has become immune to what most people find startling. “I find them in piles on front lawns, chucked over fences, on footpaths, under bushes and in shopping centre car parks and gutters,” Mr Simmons said. Covering suburbs from Frankston to Ferntree Gully, Mr Simmons said syringes were everywhere. “I started noticing them in the last five years, but the past 12 to 18 months they’ve really increased to the point where I’m seeing them more than I see rubbish on the ground, you don’t need to go out searching for them they’re right in front of you,” he said. After three years in the business, Mr Simmons said he didn’t envisage the gravity of the problem. “It wasn’t something I thought I’d have to do when I signed up, I didn’t think I’d have to deal with syringes at this high rate,” he said. Mr Simmons said he found around the same number of capped and uncapped syringes and added that didn’t make his job any easier. “It’s not a nice feeling having to pick them up, even when I know it’s capped and I have gloves, it’s still not a good feeling to touch – the
Used syringes can lurk in parks, on lawns and around shopping centres. day I started I would very rarely see them, probably once every four months, now it’s daily,” he explained. Having worked in Melbourne’s inner city suburb of Prahran, Mr Simmons said Dandenong’s syringe problem was at the same level as Prahran’s. “I find them when I’m not working as well; 12 months ago there was a few in the gutter at Coles in Noble Park – they are right across Dandenong but Noble Park is the
worst,” he said. A necessity much the same as his lawn mower, his very own sharps container is stored in his truck and disposed of every six to eight weeks. He said the problem in Lynbrook was slowly growing. “I was in Lynbrook and pulled up to mow a client’s lawn, and within three metres on the side of the road I found a syringe,” he said.
Concerned for children’s safety, Mr Simmons said in some cases users would destroy the plastic sharps bins to get the used ones out. He said the way out was to see more steel bins installed around town. “I very rarely see the steel bins- even if the council bolted them onto power poles, but it’s hard to know if they’d use them, but we won’t know if we don’t do anything – you can’t stop them doing it, but can provide places for them to be safely disposed of. “I know they go on about the ice epidemic but the syringe problem is still here,” he said. According to Mr Simmons, Dandenong and Springvale are syringe hotspots with businesses copping the brunt just as much as residential homes and estates. “They’ll go in to a secluded area and shoot up and throw them over the fence. I have been servicing a Dandenong business for 12 months which has syringes thrown over their fence on a weekly basis, which is a worry for customers walking through the outdoor stock,” he said. Mr Simmons believes a mix of education in schools and steel bins are the only way to combat the growing problem. “I am concerned Lynbrook is going to end up like Dandenong and Frankston and education is the key,” he said.

IN BRIEF Women struck POLICE are investigating two robberies only a day apart in which two women were mugged as they walked home from Springvale train station. The first victim was approached in Watt Street about 11.30pm on Wednesday 1 July by three Caucasian men who punched her before taking her phone. Then at 7.50pm the following day another woman was walking down Princess Avenue when she was approached by two Caucasian men. When she tried to walk away they pulled her back and she fell. They then stood over her and demanded her phone. The men ran off when she began screaming.
Truck torched A TRUCK was deliberately set on fire at a Keysborough construction site earlier this month. Ready to give it a go By CASEY NEILL SUSAN Collier wasn’t immediately welcomed into the Rotary Club of Dandenong. She was a 20-something-year-old woman trying to break into a group of older gentlemen and met some resistance. “Now I feel like one of the fellas,” she said. And on Sunday 12 July the group welcomed the 31-year-old as its president for the 12 months ahead - the youngest person to hold the position and only the second woman in the job. The Dandenong North resident joined in 2010 because she’d grown up around her dad Alan’s Rotary involvement. “Back then it was a really active club. Once a month we were out as a family doing something Rotary-related,” she said. “I decided I wanted to be a part of it. “One of the men actually said to me ‘why do you want to join? Why do you want to join a group of old men?’ “If I wasn’t so stubborn I probably would have given up a while ago. “But I had one of the members come to me just before Christmas and say ‘Susan, I’ve got to say I was dead set against you when you were proposed’ then he said ‘now I wish we could clone 10 of you’.” Ms Collier wants to use her term to bring in more young members. “The key is for me to be out doing things,” she said. “Younger people are not going to come to a meeting once a week and have dinner and go home.
New Rotary Club of Dandenong president Susan Collier. 140259 Picture: ROB CAREW “You have those social outlets already. “It’s got to be hands-on, meaningful work in the community.” City of Greater Dandenong has put together a list of possible projects and the club has made contact with the Sudanese community. “I’d like to try and target some of the communities within Dandenong and see how we can help them, what they need
from us,” Ms Collier said. “Ideally our club should reflect our community. “I’m hoping that by tapping into some of these groups and working alongside them that they get an understanding of what we’re about and want to get involved with us.” Ms Collier is studying a bachelor of education with a major in special educa-
tion but can still find time for Rotary. “It used to be that you had to come every week. Now it’s more what you put in,” she said. “If you’re not able to come to any meetings but you’re able to help out every second weekend if we’ve got something on, that’s what you do. “Rotary is what you make it. Whatever you want your involvement to be is what you do and nothing beyond that.” Aside from time, the $200 membership fee is another hurdle to recruiting new members. “It is hard to ask people to pay to be a volunteer,” Ms Collier said. “A lot of that goes to Rotary International to cover your insurance. A part of that as well goes to Rotary Foundation which is Rotary’s own charity. “People are not going to pay to be a volunteer to do nothing. We’ve got to be active.” She likes being part of an organisation that makes a difference in the world. “And I get the chance to meet people that I would never meet,” she said. “I can go to dinner on a Monday night and sit next to an undertaker and a solicitor. “In my life I would never interact with those people. “The bigger part of it is to be involved in something that makes a real difference. “It’s pretty cool.” Visit dandenong.starcommunity.com. au and pick up the 20 July Journal for more from the changeover.
Woman fights for her life A KEYSBOROUGH woman was fighting for her life in hospital last week after the car she was travelling in was involved in a collision with an allegedly stolen ute on EastLink early on Monday morning, 6 July. The 69-year-old, who was a passenger in a grey Mazda, was critically injured in the smash at Dandenong North about 12.30am. As of Thursday she remained in a critical but stable condition at The Alfred. Her co-occupant, a 71-year-old man, was taken to Dandenong Hospital with minor injuries. On Tuesday, a 30-yearold Berwick man - the driver of the ute - was charged with negligently causing serious injury. Police say the blue Falcon ute had been reported stolen from Bayswater North. The man also allegedly stole a white Toyota Hi Ace van at the crash scene as its driver stopped to assist the Mazda’s occupants. he stolen ute was abandoned on the tollway’s centre median strip.

Smiles light up the night By CASEY NEILL AN ILLUMINATED Dandenong shone during the annual Nocturnal arts after dark event. Temporary art installations and projections popped up around Harmony Square on Thursday 9 July, celebrating night, light and life. Visitors warmed their hands and toasted marshmallows around fire pits, made their way inside a giant inflatable salmon and watched owls take flight into the night. The big screen featured artist compilations and text messages from attendees sharing their impressions of Nocturnal and sight, light and sound installation Batmania challenged the dark perceptions of bats. Councillor John Kelly said he loved it. “I’ve been for the last few years and it’s just fantastic,” he said.
“The vitality of it all last night was just fantastic, with families. It’s a great time to do it, in school holidays.” Cr Kelly said there seemed to be a bigger crowd this year. “I didn’t recognise too many people so I hope there were a lot of people from outside the city who came,” he said. “Art is in the eye of the beholder. Not everyone liked the different pieces, but it puts us on a different pedestal, I think.” He said even the hotly-debated Harmony Square signage starred on the night. “When I was leaving there were six kids crawling over the sign and it was just beautiful to see,” he said. “It just reflected the night, I think, that it was family-orientated.” “The staff did a great job, and the artists, but let’s be mindful of the volunteers who did a great job, too.”
Kitty, 8, enjoys the illuminated cranes at Harmony Square.
Eadie, 8, checks out the illuminating art from a different perspective.
Lyn, Fiona, Hannah and Sarah Brown have their eyes on the big screen.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Jobs set to go to Africa By CASEY NEILL DANDENONG South jobs could be sent to South Africa if Aspen workers and management can’t reach a new deal. About 200 workers set up a picket line at the pharmaceutical company on Frankston-Dandenong Road at 11pm on Tuesday 7 July, following 18 months of failed negotiations. On Wednesday they played football, sought shelter in their cars and huddled around a fire as passing motorists tooted their support, and even pulled over to offer assistance. An Aspen spokesperson said the proposal was for workers to voluntarily convert their roster to an average 38-hour week with 12 rostered days off (RDOs) instead of their current 36hour week with 24 RDOs. They would receive a higher hourly rate in exchange. The spokesperson said the change would increase production efficiency to sustainable levels. “Many of Aspen’s competitors are offshoring their manufacturing operations to lower cost jurisdictions,” they said. “Unless Aspen takes steps to increase efficiency, its Australian operations may not be sustainable.” Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) organiser Toby Paterson said Aspen had tried and failed to change RDO conditions during past workplace agreement negotiations. “This time they’re digging their heels in,” he said. “It’s absolutely outrageous that the company is scaring the workers by telling them that their jobs will be lost to South Africa, purely to cut some of their basic and hard-fought conditions. “Nobody really wants to sit out here, but if the company’s not prepared to listen to the workers ...
Aspen staff strike to try to save their jobs over fears their work may be sent to South Africa. 141502 “We’re prepared to sit until the company’s attitude changes.” The plant produces chemicals for the pharmaceutical industry, including methadone. “The company said to me this morning that they had enough products to last several months,” Mr Pater-
son said. “Whether that’s true or not, I don’t know.” National Union of Workers (NUW) is also involved in negotiations, which have included proposing banking the RDO days to improve flexibility, adding them to annual leave time, or allowing workers to accrue the RDOs
through working overtime. NUW organiser Andy Riley said: “The company just wants to force longer working hours on them and they see it as a way of gaining more efficiency.” Bernie Lacey has worked for Aspen for 15 years and said the RDO change would cost workers time with

China trip to develop new trade opportunities BUSINESSES can jump on board a Greater Dandenong trip to China to forge ties and find new trade markets. Councillors and officers will head a delegation to the council’s sister city of Xuzhou and nearby Nanjing - both in Victoria’s sister state of Jiangsu. The council is inviting business and industry leaders from throughout Melbourne’s south east to come along on the September visit. They’ll head to the 18th Xuzhou Investment Fair, network with businesses in Nanjing through the Jiangsu Federation of Industry and Commerce (JFIC) and meet AusTrade and
Victorian Government Business Office representatives in Nanjing and Shanghai. Greater Dandenong business group manager Paul Kearsley said relationships that the council had forged provided an unprecedented opportunity for businesses to tap into Chinese markets. He said China’s middle class would be four times the size of America’s within a generation and it had growing wealth. “I’d like to make a focus on food businesses,” Mr Kearsley said. “They are so focused on wanting to get better food and they trust Australian food and
they see it as very high quality. “It’s clean, green food and it’s specialised.” He attended the 17-day Victoria Jiangsu Business Placement Program from 8 to 22 May and visited supermarket chain Ivy, which exclusively stocks overseas products. “There’s opportunities for Australian businesses to get their products on those shelves,” he said. He said there were also opportunities in manufacturing, aged care and green power. “Value-add, clever, intellectual engineering offerings is where we should be focussing,” he said.
“The main focus is getting the Chinese to import from Australia rather than the other way around.” During the trip Mr Kearsley participated in lectures at a university in Nanjing covering the developing Chinese commercial culture, the internet era from a Chinese perspective and keys to doing business in China. He hopes to run a workshop for September’s tour participants before they depart. “Even before they get on the plane they sort of know what to expect,” he said. “It’s about being prepared.” Mr Kearsley was the only local government representative on
the May tour and tagged along with food industry members to business mentoring sessions and site visits. They spent time in Melbourne’s sister city, Tianjin, and toured regional cities near Nanjing - each home to more than 10 million people. The Greater Dandenong delegation will travel from 23 September to 1 October. Members will be responsible for their own travel expenses including airfares of $1000 to $1200 and accommodation of $150 to $200 per night. Email business@cgd.vic.gov. au or call Mr Kearsley on 8571 1000 for more information.
Push to head off plans for two extra public holidays A DANDENONG councillor has canned plans for two extra public holidays. The State Government today released an impact statement which showed the two new public holidays would deliver as much as $312 million in benefit to the Victorian economy, but would also cost the economy $405 million. Cr Peter Brown said the cost of declaring Easter
Sunday and Grand Final Friday as public holidays was too high. He is calling on the council to prepare an urgent submission opposing the extra holidays. “My personal view is that the Victorian economy cannot afford such a holiday, and the economic impacts on Greater Dandenong businesses are unaffordable and unjustified,” he said. “To close Victoria
down on a Friday for a football procession for a match the following day is a waste. “I enjoy a day off as much as anyone but I try to be responsible and not make my neighbour pay for it. “I believe it is important for our council to prepare an economic impact statement as a matter of urgency for submission within the 28 day period.
“If necessary, I am prepared to move an Urgency Motion at council this Monday night to secure the preparation of an economic impact statement. “I am confident that council, representing as it does not just homeowners but employers, is the best vehicle to provide a co-ordinated response on behalf of our business ratepayers.” Acting Minister for
Small Business Gavin Jennings said the introduction of Easter Sunday as a public holiday would ensure that workers who need to work over the Easter weekend are paid fairly. “The previous Liberal Government removed the Easter Sunday trading restrictions in 2011 but did not make it a public holiday, forcing many workers to take time away from their family without fair
compensation.” He said other benefits include a boost to the state’s tourism and hospitality industries, with an increase in occupancy rates in hotels, restaurants, cafes and bars across the state. Will your business be impacted by two new public holidays? Let us know at journal@starnewsgroup.com.au or www. facebook.com/DandenongJournal.

Ark trail hits the summit ARARAT… not the Victorian town, nor even the mountain there but the biblical mountain in south-eastern Turkey. The late Supreme Patriarch of all Armenians, Vazken I, once said: “To aspire Ararat is nobler and more inspiring than to reach Ararat”. “As an Armenian, after aspiring to it all my life I decided at my old age that it was time for me to climb the mountain,” Mr Selian said. Ararat, which used to be situated on the millennial territory of historical Armenia, has been the national symbol of Armenians. It is also the cradle of human civilisation, a mountain unique in its appearance and history. With its main peak at an altitude of 5165 metres it is the highest mountain in the world relative to its height (4300 metres) because its foot stretches on a tableland at less than 1000 metres from sea level. “This was all the more reason to mount up Ararat,” Mr Selian said. “We were a group of seven people accompanied by a Kurd guide who also was our cook and waiter. “We departed from Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia, passed through Georgia as the Turkish-Armenian border was closed. “Early morning we started our ascent from Dogubayazit, a Kurdish town at the foot of Ararat. “The weather is nice, the landscape is nice, and every-
ARMENIAN SERGE SELIAN FOLLOWED IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF MANY WHO ARE KEEN TO UNCOVER THE REMAINS OF NOAH’S ARK WHICH THE BIBLE SAYS CAME TO REST ON MOUNT ARARAT, BUT THE KEYSBOROUGH RESIDENT DIDN’T JUST CLIMB THE DORMANT VOLCANO TO FIND A PIECE OF HISTORY... thing would be nice if we could successfully reach our final goal. “Firstly, after not that difficult a climb, we rested at a camp at 3470m altitude in our tents and sleeping bags. “Next day we acquired another almost one thousand meters in height, stopping, resting and sleeping at the second camp at 4145m under the same conditions. “The third and last day of ascent was to be the hardest and longest. “We awoke at 1am and started climbing at 2am. “The slope was much steeper this time and the gravel was slippery. “I cannot say that I suffered from lack of oxygen, but surely it is a reason for me to get tired more often than usual. “Luckily, at 4690m we met the ice cap of the mountain, fixed the crampons on our boots and the path on the frozen snow became easier. “The dawn was nigh, the wind was strong but we did not care as only a few metres remained to the peak. “At 6am we claimed victory. “It did not matter that the
wind was still sharp and cold, (or) the mist hindered us from admiring the surroundings… we were on the top of the world. “The way back was the same but descending, so we nearly ran down to the departure point. “We only stopped a little at camps to have breakfast, lunch and, of course, a break before going on to walk to the final destination – our hotel in Dogubayazit which we reached at 8pm the same day, happy and proud of our performance. “We deserved a good and proper rest in the comfortable rooms of the hotel… we conquered Ararat. Khachatur Abovian, founder of Armenian modern literature, climbed Ararat as part of the first recorded expedition on the biblical mountain. Professor Johann Jacob Friedrich Wilhelm Parrot from the University of Dorpat (Estonia) led the men on 27 September 1829. Abovian subsequently wrote: “I deem myself the happiest man in the heart of Asia as I was in the sacred land of my ancestors”. “I can understand him,” Mr Selian concluded.
Library overdue for demolition WRECKERS have moved in on the former Dandenong Library. Workers started dismantling the old Stuart Street library last week. The task is expected to be completed by the end of July. Once the building is demolished, the area will be converted into a temporary carpark for shoppers at Dandenong Market. Mayor Sean O’Reilly said access to the former Clow Street building and YStop would not be hindered during the demoli-
tion period. The next municipal building to be demolished will the former Springvale council offices on Springvale Road. Wreckers will move in on 20 July. The demolition is expected to take approximately eight weeks. Once the building is demolished, temporary fencing will remain, new temporary paths will be created and the uncovered earth will be seeded with grass. Mr O’Reilly said the council
was making sure that the two demolitions were being carried out with the community’s safety in mind. “This is also an iconic moment in history, whereby two of our municipal buildings, which have served the community well, are changing the landscape of our environment,“ he said. A master plan has been created for the Springvale site and includes a new library and community facilities.

He’s the full package By JARROD POTTER TO RUN out for Vic Country in this year’s AFL Under-18 National Championships, you would have to run past high-flying defender Jacob Weitering. Weitering, 18, took to the state captaincy confidently as he’d offer a high-five, a pat on the back, or a few reassuring words to his team-mates as they streamed past him onto the field. The Dandenong Stingrays’ footballer champions a no-nonsense, teamoriented style of play, that has a lot of recruiters thinking he could be the first player picked out of this year’s AFL national draft. But that’s an individual accomplishment and not something that drives him. What motivates the mobile utility - whether forward, his customary back-line roles or even occasionally pinch-hitting in around the ground ruck duties - is the team. Helping dictate the play across halfback - along with Stingrays’ team-mates Bailey Rice, Brandon White, Keiran Collins and Tommy Glen - Weitering was an integral part of Vic Country’s championship victory, secured offi-
cially with a 32-point win over Western Australia on Thursday (2 July). For Weitering, leading out this power-packed Vic Country side - one of the strongest teams ever assembled in national championships history - stands as his greatest footballing honour. “It means absolutely everything - it’s been a privilege to lead a side like this and it’s a quality side at that,” Weitering said. “It stems from the top - Leon Harris and Paul Henriksen - they’ve done a lot of work over the last two years, to get us from not even beating Division-1 teams a few years ago to going six-and-zero in a national championship is quite something. “Henry (Henriksen) stated at the start of this week that we can be a championship team, but also we wanted to be a champion team every week and one that will be remembered. “Congratulations to all the boys, all the parents and all the family - we just can’t thank them enough - it’s been massive.” It’s no surprise the 195cm key defender was named in the All Australian side - stationed at his customary centre-half back position alongside

While Weitering also received the Ben Mitchell Medal - voted the most deserving among the AFL Academy squad to best represent the late Mitchell’s values - his mind is squarely set on team tasks and living up to the roles required for the entire group. It’s this team-first mindset - backing into packs, chopping out third man up for his mates and running all day to set up the play from the back half - that has everyone agreeing that Weitering is AFL-calibre before even stepping
foot in the national competition. “Individual accolades come along, but I’m a team man and that’s why I play a team sport,” Weitering said. “I’ve just loved this week and loved this group. “Being with the boys is something I’ll look back on - it’s as simple as that - some of us have been together for three years, two years, others have been here for a couple of weeks or two months since we started the carnival. “The memories we’ll share - winning certainly helps.” Vic Country coach Paul Henriksen
The Saint Lonie ascension By JARROD POTTER HE HAS Saints fans’ tongues wagging already, a testament to Jack Lonie’s amazing talents only 12 games into a league career. Number 37 - the in-and-under pocket rocket - was named the AFL Rising Star nominee for Round 14 as he continued his rapid progression into the AFL ranks. Lonie’s nomination was on the back of an 18-disposal effort in St Kilda’s rampaging 110-point win over Essendon on Sunday. The fans have gravitated to the Seaford sensation en masse, with some going as far to duct-tape a ‘3’ next to the ‘7’ on their old Lenny Hayes jumpers. Others have compared the 18-yearold forward to former Saints’ forward dynamo Stephen Milne - with the pair walking a similar path into the AFL via the Dandenong Stingrays. Needless to say, whoever he is compared to, Lonie is receiving glowing endorsements across the league in his debut season and has throughout his junior career rising through the ranks for Seaford and into the TAC Cup and last year’s national championships. “I suppose it was a little bit surprising - I felt my game was strong... it’s obviously a terrific honour and something I’m pretty proud of. “I’ve had a lot of clarity in my role, which has given me a lot of confidence, and so has the rest of the playing group - they’ve let me in with open arms… felt a lot of belonging in the senior team… got a lot of confidence out of that.” Lonie earned his place in the Saints line-up for their Round-1 clash against Greater Western Sydney and
simply summed up his skipper. “He’s just going to be an AFL player,” Henriksen said. “Off the ground, on the ground, around the group - he’s just the package and what he gives towards the group. “An outstanding captain and today (Thursday) played him forward - for the first half - which was different... but I thought he was serviceable then he went back and helped out there.” Weitering will now return to schoolboys’ duties with The Peninsula School and TAC Cup duties for his beloved Dandenong Stingrays.
Taken by Sharks NATIONAL PREMIER LEAGUES DANDENONG Thunder was struck another blow to its hopes of staying in the Victorian top flight next year after conceding its seventh loss in a row. The former Thunder midfielders (some to mid-season tranfers) lined up against the George Andrews battalion as Alan Kearney, Kris Kioussis and former skipper Alan Mulcahy (also mid-season tranfer) set about taking the points from a desperate Dandenong - who are razor’s edge in regards to relegation. The Thunder’s best efforts were no match for the Sharks, as Nicholas Krousoratis snuck past the Thunder defence to smash in two first-half goals while James Riccobene finished the job soon after the resumption. Zaim Zeneli was noble in defeat parrying away a number of Sharks’ attacks - but his efforts weren’t enough to put the points in the Thunder’s pocket. Dandenong slips to last place on goal difference and has five rounds to snare a win and avoid demotion. It starts on Friday night against Avondale FC at home from 8.30pm.
Jack Lonie - pictured playing for the Dandenong Stingrays last season - is this week’s AFL Rising Star Picture: JARROD POTTER nominee. 126158 has clamped onto it ever since, savouring the challenge of life in a new look St Kilda forward line alongside fellow recruits Josh Bruce and Tim Membrey. “Lucky enough I got my spot for Round 1 and I’ve been in ever since so it’s been good,” Lonie said. “Just want to play as much as pos-
sible and I know I can play at this level now, so I really want to just stay in the team and work on building a bit of success and build a strong culture at the club.” Capping off his nomination earning match with a scintillating goal - Lonie threaded the needle on an incredible boundary-line rolling goal
to ice the result and send the Saints’ faithful into a joyful frenzy. Lonie and his beloved Saints have surprised many this season - pushing to 13th on the ladder with a 5-8 record - ahead of the clash against Greater Western Sydney Giants away on Sunday (12 July after the Journal went to press) from 1.10pm.
NPL 1 EAST IN NPL1, Dandenong City brought back the points following its regional road trip, knocking over Murray United 3-0 on the back of goals from Ash Cattermole and two late nails in the coffin via Keegan Ziada and Alex Rojas. City sits fifth in NPL1 East and faces FC Bulleen Lions at home on Saturday. Meanwhile Springvale White Eagles lost to Kingston City 1-2.

Rangers all apples By JARROD POTTER SEABL - Round 13 RATTLING off dual victories over the Apple Isles’ finest, Dandenong strung together confident wins against Launceston and North West Tasmania. After struggling early, Dandenong hit its straps the only way it knows how - at both ends of the court. The Rangers bullied Launceston into a five-minute scoreless period as Dandenong went from 9-16 down, to 22-16 ahead in a lightning phase, but the visitors - even battling fatigue after a Friday night encounter with Bendigo - didn’t lie down. Well in the contest via the efforts of WNBL trio Alex Wilson (19 points, 10 rebounds), Mikaela Ruef (15 points) and Lauren Mansfield (13 points) - the Tornadoes made it tough for Dandenong to suppress their versatile offence. From there the powersthat-be dictated Dandenong’s demolition of the Launceston defence, with Clare Papavs (25 points), Tenaya Phillips (12 points) and Jacinta Kennedy (11 points) leaving the
Tornadoes quite still. Dandenong ramped up the pressure to nail another audacious run - from 58-50 to 68-50 - and the match was effectively out of the Tornadoes reach. A game clear with a game in hand over Geelong, the topranked Rangers’ women face Nunawading. In the SEABL men’s clash, Dandenong burnt off a dogged North West Tasmania outfit in a 94-83 victory. The Daequon Montreal Show continued to roll on as big ‘DQ’ nailed 13/24 from the field en route to 33 points, five assists and five rebounds. He had plenty of support from Lucas Walker (11 points, 8 rebounds) and Chuck Long (4 points, 9 rebounds, 5 rebounds) under the basket. Matt Owies (14 points) stepped up off the bench to continue to rattle off some impressive tallies. The win keeps Dandenong right in contention to take the top seed in the SEABL East with its trip to Nunawading this week.
BIG V A TOUGH night at Chelsea continued a rough trot for
Keysborough Cougars’ women. Firing out of the blocks, Keysborough claimed an early 13-7 lead via Billie Lucas (20 points, 17 rebounds), who led the Cougars’ call in her usual up-tempo manner. It took a while for the Gulls to start soaring, but eventually the home side found its way, but not after a long, dogged fight from the Cougars. Trailing 29-33 at the main break, Keysborough could not keep up the intensity with an eight-point third term to give Chelsea the advantage. Chelsea carried on from there to take the 21-point win in the end, as Keysborough was left to wonder what could’ve been. Natasha Warden (8 points), Sarah Collins and Ashleigh Wright (6 points each) also stepped up offensively in tandem with Lucas. The Cougars’ men faced Mornington on Sunday afternoon after the Journal’s deadline. Keysborough host Blackburn and Maccabi respectively on Saturday night in the women’s and men’s competitions.
School Sports Victoria baseballer Steven Hughes is set to give the other states a few Picture: JARROD POTTER headaches with his powerful pitches. 141368
By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN baseballers everywhere will be glad Berwick’s Steven Hughes is finally on their side. Built like a tank and capable of pitching down cannon-fire like fastballs, Hughes, 17, is one of the School Sports Victoria (SSV) most powerful assets at the upcoming Pacific Schools Games where he will suit up against the other states and Pacific-rim countries. While he can fill in at first base, Hughes prefers to stride to the mound and dominate the match with his power-packed arsenal. “I’m a pitcher - I just like it there most,” Hughes said. “Probably just like to start a match and see how long I can go.” The Berwick College student splits his time between Springvale in summer and Berwick in winter, absorbing as much knowledge as he can from Melbourne Aces dynamo Scott Wearne and evergreen pitcher Rob Hogan. Taking that knowledge and flinging it at the opposition pitch-after-pitch at a rapid clip, Hughes has already put
his pitching up to state scrutiny and passed with flying colours, helping the Dandenong Baseball Association’s (DBA) under-18 side take out the State Winter Baseball Championship. “We knocked off Diamond Valley for the title,” Hughes said. “They were unbeaten through the round robin rounds and we finished second on wins - played six games - we won two and lost one on the Saturday which was good, then we came up against Geelong and Sunraysia and we beat Geelong to lock us in to the final. “I started and was feeling alright - bit sore from playing five games before hand - one other guy came in ‘Jai’ - he came in and closed the last two innings out and got us to win it.” Hughes puts the south-east’s success down to stellar coaching at all ranks - with former players always the first to put their hand up and help develop the next generation. “Definitely the coaching that’s around - Rob Hogan, Scotty Wearne lives in Berwick… all the guys from Cheltenham… David Clarkson who has played and coached for Australia… there are heaps of
guys around who chip in and help out,” Hughes said. America is always on the minds of young baseballers in this country and Hughes is no exception - with college a strong option or even potentially MLB dreams on the horizon. He’s taking life a tournament at a time and hopes everything else pans out for the best. “Hopefully I can get over to the states, that would be ideal, but you never know,” Hughes said. “Whatever happens - I haven’t really looked into it much, but I’m just hoping and will see what happens after the two tournaments coming up this year. “Hopefully we also finish well in the winter - we’re sitting first at the moment - and keep that going. “Get on to nationals as well and keep that going too.” Hughes wanted to thank Rob Hogan and Scott Wearne for their advice throughout the last couple of years and his dad for driving him everywhere pursuing his baseball ambitions. Hughes’ SSV campaign runs in Adelaide from 21 to 28 November.

SPORT TAC CUP - Round 13
Stingrays up the Murray By JARROD POTTER WHAT was touted as a defining match in sorting out the TAC Cup puzzle this season turned out to be a straight forward solution for the Dandenong Stingrays. Murray’s competitiveness arrived a couple of hours too late when it battled Dandenong on Saturday afternoon - the visitors could only muster five behinds up until the half. Dandenong’s defensive end - led by All Australians Keiran Collins and Jacob Weitering - negated any forward momentum from Murray and the Stingrays’ midfield group similarly clamped down on anything wearing the Bushies’ colours. The highly anticipated Weitering/Collins versus Josh Scache All-Australian super battle was well and truly claimed by the Stingrays. Outside of a three-goal barrage in the third term, Murray was left embarrassed by Dandenong’s better teamwork and their ability to spread and run in waves. While the Vic Country contingent relished their first time back in the Stingrays’ ranks for a while, with Brandon White, Kurt Mutimer and Tommy Glen returning to Shepley Oval following the end of the national carnival, it was a num-
Brandon White slogs it out as the heavens opened across Shepley Oval. 141641 Picture: JARROD POTTER “I thought Kurt Mutimer was exceptional in the midfield,” Black said. “It was his best game for the year as well.” “It’s fantastic to have Weiters and Collo back there - two solid defenders you know they can beat their opponents and win their own footy.” Taking second place outright in the run home to the TAC Cup finals, Dandenong faces the
Northern Knights on Sunday afternoon (26 July) from 1pm at Preston City Oval. “Our goal hasn’t changed - we always want to play two finals so if we can finish top four we’re guaranteed that,” Black said. “That’s what we focus on and we’ve still got some really tough games of footy ahead and ladder position for these teams we’re facing is irrelevant.”
EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE Division 1 - Round 13
SFL Division 2 - Round 12
The Bulls wanted this one badly
Burra has the Goodes By JARROD POTTER HAPPY hunting continued for Keysborough as it flew past Hampton comfortably. Even with sub-optimal conditions, the Burra didn’t buckle en route to a 101-point demolition of the Hammers as Matt Collett (5 goals), Jake Dunn (3) and Geoff Humphreys (3) had a field day in front of the sticks. The tried-and-tested hands of coach Ryan Goodes and Corey Wilkinson proved best in the quagmire alongside Tim Bacic and Daniel Morland. The win puts Keysborough on level pegging with Oakleigh District, split only by the narrowest of percentage - 176.13 to 174.47. The Burra faces Caulfield at home on Saturday. A gallant fight-back in the wet left Doveton Eagles close-but-no-cigar in a three-point demoralising loss to Skye. Trailing by 14 at the final break, the Eagles soared back into the clash - booting four goals - but the efforts of Jarrod O’Neill (2 goals) and Enayte Samadi (1) weren’t enough to get the Eagles across the line. Springvale Districts got to belt out the song for only the fourth time this season, taking a rousing 37-point win over Heatherton on the back of superb performances from Lachlan Morrey (3 goals) and Peter Heng (2).
By JARROD POTTER WITH the Bulls and Hawks both jostling for position in the top half of the EFL Division-1 ladder, every match has become essential. Rowville got the leap on the Bulls - requiring the visitors to dig deep and return fire. After conceding three in a row, the Bulls charged back to boot six consecutively and pushed towards the front, but the close quarters were maintained through the opening half thereafter as neither side could break clear. The visitors started to overcome the best efforts of the Seebeck Oval faithful after half-time though. The fleet-footed Bulls’ midfield started the task and set up the forward line expertly. Craig Anderson and Shane Valenti sensationally returned from injury and resumed their battering work through the centre, while at either end Ziggie Alwan and Brett Dore menaced the taller Hawks’ brigade. Heated exchanges at three-quarter-time resulted in players from both sides being sent off, but by then the Rowville resolve had started to weaken and Noble Park seized the

ber of week-in, week-out familiar faces that got the job done. James Freeman (3 goals) kept his good form going up forward - proving too wily whether at ground level or in the air for the Bushies’ defenders - along with Jack Holden (2 goals) and Travis Young (1 goal) they proved a tricky trio for Murray to man. The only area of concern - and it’s becoming a persistent problem with the Rays - was its goal-kicking as the Dandenong men sprayed 17 behinds in their 11.17 (83) to 7.10 (52) triumph. “I was rapt with our intensity at the start of the game,” Dandenong coach Craig Black said. “We built it up to be a big game, second versus third... and our attack around the contest for the first quarter-and-a-half this week really set the tone for the rest of the game. “Our impact around the contest - we were really hard around the footy and again, I’d love to have kicked a few more goals, but our pressure and our attack on the footy is as good as I’ve seen at my time here.” Black praised the efforts of his Vic Country contingent, especially Kurt Mutimer - saying the midfielder played his best match in 2015 - and his All Australian defenders.

advantage. While they were outscored in the final term by Rowville, the damage was already done as Noble Park powerhouses Shayne Allan (3 goals), Kyle Martin (2 goals) and Tim Harper (2 goals) finished the job. Coach Mick Fogarty gave one of his epic post-match pump-up speeches to help set the stage for the Bulls’ run home and he couldn’t have been more pleased with the complete effort of the full team. “It meant a hell of a lot - it’s this season really - it’s a season to establish ourselves as having a real, serious go come September,” Fogarty said. “It was a high-pressure game, both sides had a lot to play for.” Fogarty thought Valenti, Martin and Harper were dominant through the midfield to earn his best, but thought the whole side deserved credit for the stellar win. The news only gets better for Noble Park with best-and-fairest midfielder Sam Monaghan and young livewire Kevin Kean set to return after the bye when the Bulls head up the hill to face North Ringwood on 25 July.
