CASEY Highway Patrol is ready to roll out its latest squad car, which now has the technology to scan number plates instantly. The new BlueNet vehicle - one of six state-wide - arrived at the Cranbourne precinct on Wednesday and is the first of its kind to be trialled in Casey. The BlueNet is the first police car in Australia to have an in-built Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system which allows it to scan number plates almost instantaneously and alert police if an unregistered or stolen car is driving past. It can also identify whether there is an outstanding sheriff’s warrant linked to the suspect number plate, or whether the driver is unlicensed, disqualified or suspended. The mobile data terminal allows police to quickly conduct licence and vehicle checks without the need for radio communication to see if the car is stolen. Highway Patrol Unit Commander and Acting Senior Sergeant Pat Green praised the BlueNet’s ability to instantly “ping” a suspicious car. “What it does is it automatically recognises a vehicle that is flagging for whatever reason,” he said. “In normal cars it’s hit and miss. They have a computer in a normal car, and you type in the rego - if blokes are on patrol they might type in a hundred regos. “With the BlueNet, cars will be driving past it and if a car flags, it sends a signal to the BlueNet which alerts police that something is wrong.” Cameras are mounted on the exterior of the BlueNet, with everything captured by the in-car video system.

Mental patient kills co-worker in pool By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

On Monday 6 July Mr Olle found the victim had died from multiple injuries and immersion in a home swimming pool in Narre Warren on 25 January 2009. The victim was pronounced dead in Dandenong Hospital on 2 February – the date of his birthday. He was described by Mr Olle as a “bloke’s bloke” and a “hands-on father” who enjoyed a drink and loved to fish and cook. The perpetrator – whose name was omitted in Mr Olle’s report – had an “alcohol dependence disorder” and killed the victim during a mutual weekend drinking session. Had been released as an involuntary patient from Casey Hospital on 16 January after taking his parents hostage in a seven-hour siege two weeks earlier. Mr Olle’s inquest focused on the killer’s medical management but he emphasised his role was not to lay blame. In his report, Mr Olle referred to the man making threats to kill beforehand, his frightened parents intending to take out intervention
MENTAL Health Minister Martin Foley has said that careful consideration will be given to a coroner’s findings into a man who killed a work colleague after being released from Casey Hospital’s mental health ward days earlier. The findings into the 52-year-old Narre Warren victim’s death were released on Monday, prompting his widow to pronounce the “broken” mental health system had let her family down. The victim’s wife told the News that she had pushed for the inquest because she didn’t want another family to go through the same torment. “My husband was in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong person,” she said. “It could happen to anyone unless we see change. Our system is broken and it needs to be fixed.” In his findings, State Coroner John Olle recommended that acutecare mental health patients should have access to therapeutic recovery units and specialist forensic psychiatrists prior to their release. Mr Foley said on Wednesday 8 July that “cases like this are always
orders, and his instability and intimidation in the ward. Two days before the fatal assault, a case manager interviewed the man and judged him to be threatening in manner but not a risk of harm to others, Mr Olle said. “(His) hallucinations and delusions were still present and real to him.” Mr Olle said the care by Monash Health staff was “not unreasonable or inappropriate” in the circumstances but “hindsight has revealed poor clinical decisions were made”. He recommended establishing therapeutic recovery or step-down units for acute-care patients before releasing them into the community. “In general medicine, it would be unacceptable if a patient was discharged into the community from an intensive care unit. “Why is it not equally unpalatable in a mental health setting?” Mr Olle also recommended access to specialist forensic psychiatrists - the absence of which made clinical decision making “extremely difficult” in this case. “Sadly, there is a marked overrepresentation of persons who suffer serious mental health illness in the commission of serious crime, in-
cluding homicide, in Victoria.” The victim’s wife said she backed the recommendations, though adding that a “severe shortage” of psychiatric beds needed to be solved. “Budgetary constraints should not stop these (recommendations) from occurring. “You can’t put a price on a life. “If this had have been in place my husband would still be alive today and we would still be a happy family unit.” The perpetrator is serving eight years’ jail for the victim’s manslaughter – although he is eligible for parole this year. Meanwhile, the victim’s wife is now a single parent bringing up two daughters. “Not a day goes by that we don’t think of him and miss him,” she said. “The system let us down.” Department of Health and Human Services spokesman Ian Haberfield said the department was required to provide a written response within three months of receiving the recommendations. “The response should include a statement of actions taken, or to be taken, in relation to the recommendations.“

Demo radios removed CAR radios worth a total of $2000 have been stolen from a Hallam electronics store. The demo model radios were taken from Alpine Electronics on the Princes Highway between 5pm on Friday 3 July and 8am on Monday 6 July. Dawn rises on songs of faith and harmony UNDER its motto of ‘Many Faiths, One People’ and now in its 26th year, the Interfaith Network of the City of Greater Dandenong – the oldest interfaith network in Australia – has faithfully served the local community. Initially as the Faith Communities of the City of Springvale then later as the City of Greater Dandenong Interfaith Network, this diverse group of faith and spiritual leaders in equal but independent partnership with the council has witnessed many changes over that time. The Interfaith Network is proud to contribute to the wellbeing of all who live in this city by bringing peace, harmony and understanding in the community. One of the greatest areas of change has come from growth in the popular tours to places of worship. From conducting one of two tours per year in the early 1990s to now conducting on average 27 tours per year, these interfaith experiences offer the wider community a special opportunity to understand the diverse faith and spiritual traditions lived and celebrated in the City of Greater Dandenong. In the latest development, the network is to embark on a tours training program with people

from asylum seeker and refugee backgrounds. Funded by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship and strongly supported by the council, this program aims to train participants as volunteer tour guides. It will provide an opportunity for participants to positively engage in social activities, learn about different faiths and spiritual traditions as well as share their own experiences, providing an enriching encounter for everyone who participates. The network has also been developing a preventative faith-based family violence resource kit over the past three years. Educating to change attitudes about family violence and gender inequality is crucial and urgent.
Through their role of caring and being vitally connected to their communities, faith and spiritual leaders are significantly positioned to guide and influence positive changes in these sorts of areas. As important role models to their communities, faith leaders seek to deal with issues that tear families and communities apart. Underpinning any activity or event is the wonderful essence of what holds such an Interfaith Network together. It is the compassion and love of people of faith and spiritual conviction who are prepared to regard those of a different faith with respect and dignity and who are open to living in harmony with those who are different from themselves. They are prepared to understand that other faiths and spiritual traditions can teach them something and that together they can learn much about each other. Interfaith connections such as those found in the Interfaith Network are, at their core, about relationship. Found in the everyday lives of the large majority of people in the pew/ mosque/ synagogue/ temple /gurdwara/ street are people who are all
contributing to living together in harmony. Implementing any practical interfaith initiative is only possible because there is a network of goodwill, trust and friendship in place. This is so important because at times of stressful community upheaval this ongoing commitment to understanding each other acts in a preventative way rather than in a reactionary manner where difficulties and tensions are further exacerbated. At its annual gathering of all faith and spiritual leaders, the network follows the United Nation’s theme. This year’s theme is International Year of Light - to which the network has added Spreading Rays of Hope. It is the Interfaith Network’s hope that what it is - and what it does - offers that hope. “Faith is the bird that sings when the dawn is still dark,” Rabindranath Tagore said. The David Collins Reserve in Endeavour Hills was formally unveiled to the community on Monday morning, 6 July, after the council invested $350,000 in upgrades to the area. The upgrades include improved paths, play facilities for older people, an outdoor gym, a platform to view the wetlands, a shelter with barbecue facili-
ties and general improvements to the landscape design of the park. Casey Mayor Mick Morland said the David Collins Reserve was the first Social Family Recreation (SFR) park completed under council’s Open Space Strategy. “It is envisioned that SFR spaces will service not only their local area but become destination places in the own right for people across the region,” he said. “This site now provides lei-
sure opportunities for a range of age groups and interests and caters to fitness activities, play, picnics, casual ball games, trail activities and environmental interests. “The reserve is well connected with links to the Eumemmerring Creek Trail, scenic wetland areas and a number of other recreation reserves and facilities. “Council encourages residents to come along to the official opening and check out this great renewed park for yourself.”

DANDENONG and District Benevolent Society’s headquarters is bursting at the seams. “If a Dandenong person has a bigger place that would be all my prayers answered,” the Thomas Street op shop’s manager Margaret Ladner said. “I’ve got a shed - one the church gives me - and it’s full. Cranbourne boy was charged with arson and a 15-year-old from Endeavour Hills arrested in relation to a fire which ripped through the abandoned Endeavour Hills Secondary College gym last year. A person was seen fleeing the fire around 11.30pm on Thursday 20 November at the former high school building, which the City of Casey has a partial stake in. Fourteen trucks attended the blaze, which took at least an hour to bring under control and a further three hours to extinguish.

THE demolition of the abandoned Endeavour Hills Secondary College, which had become a haven for vandals, has begun. The idle Amalfi Drive site will be used by Hallam Senior College’s Sports Academy which will be given partial access to the old campus by the Education Department. Last month during a meeting convened by Four Oaks councillor Rafal Kaplon - and attended by City of Casey CEO Mike Tyler, Casey police’s Inspector Paul Breen, Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan and Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams - it was confirmed that the State Government would develop two to three soccer pitches at the site as well as a support facility. The pitches will also be made available for the community under a shared use agreement which has yet to be drawn up between the City Of Casey and the Department of Education. Cr Rafal Kaplon said he hoped development of the pitches would start at the beginning of the next financial year in mid-2016, with the next 12 months to be used on planning which will include determining whether two or three pitches will be laid. He said the plan needed to be submitted for state and council budget approval. “I am more than pleased that the community's concerns and needs were listened to and acted upon by the State Government so quickly in response to my

Trucks put on track By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THREE trucks were towed away on Princes Highway in Hallam as part of a VicRoads safety campaign on Monday 6 July. A joint operation with Victoria Police and WorkSafe left three truck drivers facing a towing fee, on-thespot fines, repair and roadworthy costs. A new on-the-spot fine of $630 was introduced at the beginning of the month. Murray Collins from VicRoads said the operation was costly for the operator. “However, it does remove a vehicle which is a risk from being on our roads,” he said. Of the 42 vehicles tested, 29 had major defects and eight had minor defects. Mr Collins said only high risk vehicles get pulled over “enabling the majority of freight carriers to continue their journey unimpeded”. A part of Operation Trishula’s recent inspections in the western suburbs found 93 per cent of the 97 vehicles checked failed the roadside test. VicRoads is encouraging all heavy duty operators to ensure their vehicles are serviced and repaired to avoid the new on-the-spot fine. VicRoads director Eric Henderson said the roadworthy non-compliance penalty cost is nothing compared to the cost an unsafe vehicle could have on the community. “Any un-roadworthy vehicle is a risk, with the potential to cause crashes and road trauma and the potential to break down, anywhere, anytime causing unnecessary holdups and great inconvenience to other road users,” he said.

Big screen ‘for bogans’ By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A NARRE Warren man has written to Village Cinemas expressing his shock after he said he and his mother were told that an art-house film they wanted to see wasn’t showing at Fountain Gate because it wasn’t “a Narre Warren thing”. Adrian Karpish said he and his mum, Robyn, wanted to see Far From the Madding Crowd - based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy - last month at Village Fountain Gate but were told the film wasn’t showing at the Narre Warren cinema. In a letter to the News, Mr Karpish articulated his frustration. “I was informed by that member of staff that this particular movie was not ’a Narre Warren thing’. I wondered what was meant by ’a Narre Warren thing’?” he said. “Is the comment akin to racism? A type of defamatory statement and generalisation made about my suburb? “I walked away with the impression that only young, uneducated, working-

Taking up the call, Berwick resident Helen wrote to the News in support of Mr Karpish. “Fortunately there is the Cameo at Belgrave, but that is not always convenient for people, especially when we have a movie theatre virtually around the corner,” Helen wrote. “Intelligent people are moving into the Casey and Cardinia area daily. Empowering women brings out a wellspring of goodwill WELLSPRINGS for Women is a finalist for the Victorian Community Training Provider of the Year award. Acting manager Holly Gordon said this recognised the hard work from the Dandenong not-forprofit’s management, staff,
board members and volunteers, and support from other local agencies and the Greater Dandenong and Casey councils. “We also see this as recognition that we are successfully continuing the vision of our late founder, Sister Ann Halpin to ‘em-
power isolated women to live their lives more fully’,” she said. Ms Gordon said women who attended Wellsprings were often experiencing isolation due to mental illness, domestic violence, financial stress, language barriers, migration and
trauma. “These are women who fall through the gaps of other services or who quickly reach the end of their entitlements to other services in an under-pressure, under-funded community sector of rotating doors,” she said. Wellsprings provides
staff to teach volunteers. “This is one of many steps Wellsprings is taking to ensure we are meeting the ever-changing needs of our community,” Ms Gordon said. The winners will be announced during National Skills Week on 28 August.

UK girl on Anzac plot charges A 16-YEAR-OLD girl from northern England has been charged after being implicated in the foiled alleged terror plot targeting Anzac Day services in Melbourne’s south-east. She was charged with two offences under the UK’s Terrorism Act 2000 after a police raid on a Manchester house on 3 April and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on 22 July. Police were led to the girl after investigating a 15-year-old boy from Blackburn in Lancashire who was held on 2 April in connection with an alleged Australian terror plot. The British boy has appeared at the Old Bailey in London charged with trying to incite beheadings and attacks at Australian Anzac Day commemoration services. Following the boy’s arrest, a 200-strong state and federal counter-terrorism team executed seven search warrants in Narre Warren, Hampton Park, Hallam and Eumemmerring and arrested five men.

Japan jobs protest By CASEY NEILL WORKERS at Nissan’s Dandenong South parts warehouse will fly to Japan in a bid to keep their jobs. Joe Doherty and his colleagues found out at 1pm on Friday 3 July that Nissan would outsource to CEVA Logistics. “I’m 58 so I don’t know how I’ll get another job,” he said. Mr Doherty said workers felt so strongly they were considering a trip to Nissan’s head office in Japan to confront management about the decision and ask them to reverse it. There’ll be about 40 redundancies at Dandenong South and 58 across Australia. “This is how strong we feel about saving our jobs,” shop steward Judi Blackwell said. “This is not part of the automotive industry collapse. Warehousing is alive and strong. “We’ve met all our KPIs. We always meet our targets. “This is about Nissan outsourcing for cheaper labour.” Ms Blackwell said some staff had worked at the warehouse for 25 years. “They’re currently releasing the new Navara. Even right now the people are out there on the floor working so hard to get to the dealers the parts that are required for this new car,” she said. “While the people are out there working hard they’re outsourcing. “None of these people will find another job. There are no jobs in the south-east. “We hope that they’ll reconsider. That’s the best case scenario. We’re going to give it a shot.” Rob Classon has worked at the warehouse for six years. “We work hard to get the product out for the customers and this is how they treat us - throwing us on the s*** pile.” “I’m 48 this year and it’s going to be tough for me to go out and find another job.” Ngoc Tran has a seven-week-old baby and Alistair Gayles spent six years in casual employment before securing a full-time position at Nissan. “It’s as busy as it’s ever been here,” he said. “We want to stay loyal. We want to work at Nissan.”

Narre Warren man Alex Plain said most employees had a lease car deal with the company. He only recently sold his car to take up the offer and convinced his partner to do the same. “Now we’ve got to go out and buy new cars,” he said. “This job meant everything to me. “It leaves me back in the rat race like a lot of other Australians who can’t get full-time work. “It’s too many people competing for the same work.” “Things are just getting tougher.” Shop steward Tom Costello, a Nissan employee for four years, said CEVA was unlikely to maintain the warehouse. “The operations will probably move to one of their facilities. I think it will probably head to the western suburbs,” he said. In a statement, Nissan Australia said the
change followed a parts warehousing and logistics operations review. It concluded Nissan could only improve its competitiveness in these areas through significant investments in distribution and IT infrastructure, and property upgrades to meet increasingly stringent safety, technical and environmental compliance. But Mr Doherty said management knew long ago that improvement works were needed and didn’t spend the money. The statement also said Nissan had offered staff assistance relating to re-employment outside Nissan. The announcement came less than three months after the company said it would continue to manufacture parts in Dandenong “well beyond 2020” and that growing demand for parts would lead to more jobs. South Africa could gain from pay row DANDENONG South jobs could be sent to South Africa if Aspen workers and management can’t reach a new deal. About 200 workers set up a picket line at the pharmaceutical company on Frankston-Dandenong Road at 11pm on Tuesday 7 July, following 18 months of failed negotiations. An Aspen spokesperson said the proposal was for workers to voluntarily convert their roster to an average 38-hour week with 12 rostered days off (RDOs) instead of their current 36-hour week with 24 RDOs. They would receive a higher hourly rate in exchange. The spokesperson said the change would increase production efficiency to sustainable levels. “Many of Aspen’s competitors are offshoring their manufacturing operations to lower cost jurisdictions,” they said. “Unless Aspen takes steps to increase efficiency, its Australian operations may not be sustainable.” Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) organiser Toby Paterson said Aspen had tried and failed to change RDO conditions during past workplace agreement negotiations. “This time they’re digging their heels in,” he said. “It’s absolutely outrageous that the company is scaring the workers by telling them that their jobs will be lost to South Africa, purely to cut some of their basic and hard-fought conditions. “Nobody really wants to sit out here, but if the company’s not prepared to listen to the workers ... “We’re prepared to sit until the company’s attitude changes.” The plant produces chemicals for the pharmaceutical industry, including methadone. “The company said to me this morning that they had enough products to last several months,” Mr Paterson said. “Whether that’s true or not, I don’t know.” National Union of Workers (NUW) is also involved in negotiations, which have included proposing banking the RDO days to improve flexibility, adding them to annual leave time, or allowing workers to accrue the RDOs through working overtime. NUW organiser Andy Riley said: “The company just wants to force longer working hours on them and they see it as a way of gaining more efficiency.”

Smiles light up the night By CASEY NEILL AN ILLUMINATED Dandenong shone during the annual Nocturnal arts after dark event. Temporary art installations and projections popped up around Harmony Square on Thursday 9 July, celebrating night, light and life. Visitors warmed their hands and toasted marshmallows around fire pits, made their way inside a giant inflatable salmon and watched owls take flight into the night. The big screen featured artist compilations and text messages from attendees sharing
their impressions of Nocturnal and sight, light and sound installation Batmania challenged the dark perceptions of bats. Councillor John Kelly said he loved it. “I’ve been for the last few years and it’s just fantastic,” he said. “The vitality of it all last night was just fantastic, with families. It’s a great time to do it, in school holidays.” Cr Kelly said there seemed to be a bigger crowd this year. “I didn’t recognise too many people so I hope there were a lot of people from outside the city who came,” he
said. “Art is in the eye of the beholder. Not everyone liked the different pieces, but it puts us on a different pedestal, I think.” He said even the hotly-debated Harmony Square signage starred on the night. “When I was leaving there were six kids crawling over the sign and it was just beautiful to see,” he said. “It just reflected the night, I think, that it was family-orientated.” “The staff did a great job, and the artists, but let’s be mindful of the volunteers who did a great job, too.”

Eyes are still set on the Tassie Tiger mystery By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THOUGHT to be extinct for more than 75 years, the Tasmanian tiger may actually still be creeping around the region in the dead of night. And for some Cranbourne and Hampton Park residents the unanswered question surrounding the Tasmanian tiger’s fate isn’t as silly as it sounds. According to Tasmanian tiger independent researcher Michael Moss, the striped marsupial is still lurking in the region’s backyards. Mr Moss, who grew up in Cranbourne South, said extensive surveys in Tasmania show that “scientifically, it’s not possible for the Tasmanian tiger to still be alive“ on the island. “I believe they still exist only on mainland Australia. The last one died in September 1936 in Tassie,” he said. As part of an eight-part television series on different mysteries around the world, Mr Moss was interviewed by UK independent journalist Alex Hannaford for a documentary called Strange World by Off the Fence Productions. “Alex interviewed me in March this year and I took them through documents at the public records office in North Melbourne,” Mr Moss said.
Male and female Tasmanian tigers at Hobart Zoo some time before 1921. Having studied and filmed the shy creature for 20 years, Mr Moss’s avid interest in the tiger’s whereabouts has lead him to his own theory. “I filmed a Tasmania tiger in November 1998 in the Strzelecki Ranges, Gippsland, and I have no doubt that it was a Tasmanian tiger,” he said. Mr Moss believes the thylacine
was in danger of extinction and would have been a prime candidate for introduction into mainland Australia many years ago. “My theory is the tigers were introduced into Wilsons Promontory in Victoria between 1908 and 1915. “The Tasmanian tiger had a shocking reputation as a sheep killer in Tas-
Picture: Wikipedia mania and I believe they kept it a secret otherwise farmers would have (shot the tiger) on the mainland,” he said. He said the animal has visited Cranbourne and surrounding areas more than once. Mr Moss said that there had been recorded sightings on Fisheries Road in Devon Meadows, Thompsons Road
in Cranbourne and around the Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne. “There have been alleged sightings on the Mornington Peninsula, Gippsland, the Otways, Portland, the Dandenongs and the Grampians,” Mr Moss said. Pearcedale resident of 36 years Brian Morris is 99 per cent sure he saw a Tasmanian tiger about two years ago on Thompson’s Road in Lyndhurst. Mr Morris travels along Thompson’s Road every Monday 5.20am to get leftover bread for his cows and one morning he noticed the stripy animal as he slowed down to the enter the roundabout. “It walked across the road and entered a drive way, I had a fairly good look at it with my headlights on - it looked like a fox and seemed well fed. “By the time I got a good look at it I was about 10 metres away,” he said. The documentary series is due to come out worldwide later this year which also includes an interview with a Hampton Park resident who claims to have seen the mysterious tiger at Cape Otway. For Weitering, leading out this power-packed Vic Country side - one of the strongest teams ever assembled in national championships history - stands as his greatest footballing honour. “It means absolutely everything - it’s been a privilege to lead a side like this and it’s a quality side at that,” Weitering said. “It stems from the top - Leon Harris and Paul Henriksen - they’ve done a lot of work over the last two years, to get us from not even beating Division-1 teams a few years ago to going six-and-zero in a national championship is quite something. “Henry (Henriksen) stated at the start of this week that we can be a championship team, but also we wanted to be a champion team every week and one that will be remembered. “Congratulations to all the boys, all the parents and all the family - we just can’t thank them enough - it’s been massive.” It’s no surprise the 195cm key defender was named in the All Australian side - stationed at his customary centre-half back position alongside

The Saint Lonie ascension By JARROD POTTER HE HAS Saints fans’ tongues wagging already, a testament to Jack Lonie’s amazing talents only 12 games into a league career. Number 37 - the in-and-under pocket rocket - was named the AFL Rising Star nominee for Round 14 as he continued his rapid progression into the AFL ranks. Lonie’s nomination was on the back of an 18-disposal effort in St Kilda’s rampaging 110-point win over Essendon on Sunday. The fans have gravitated to the Seaford sensation en masse, with some going as far to duct-tape a ‘3’ next to the ‘7’ on their old Lenny Hayes jumpers. Others have compared the 18-yearold forward to former Saints’ forward dynamo Stephen Milne - with the pair walking a similar path into the AFL via the Dandenong Stingrays. Needless to say, whoever he is compared to, Lonie is receiving glowing endorsements across the league in his debut season and has throughout his junior career rising through the ranks for Seaford and into the TAC Cup and last year’s national championships. “I suppose it was a little bit surprising - I felt my game was strong... it’s obviously a terrific honour and something I’m pretty proud of. “I’ve had a lot of clarity in my role, which has given me a lot of confidence, and so has the rest of the playing group - they’ve let me in with open arms… felt a lot of belonging in the senior team… got a lot of confidence out of that.” Lonie earned his place in the Saints line-up for their Round-1 clash against Greater Western Sydney and
simply summed up his skipper. “He’s just going to be an AFL player,” Henriksen said. “Off the ground, on the ground, around the group - he’s just the package and what he gives towards the group. “An outstanding captain and today (Thursday) played him forward - for the first half - which was different... but I thought he was serviceable then he went back and helped out there.” Weitering will now return to schoolboys’ duties with The Peninsula School and TAC Cup duties for his beloved Dandenong Stingrays.
Taken by Sharks NATIONAL PREMIER LEAGUES DANDENONG Thunder was struck another blow to its hopes of staying in the Victorian top flight next year after conceding its seventh loss in a row. The former Thunder midfielders (some to mid-season tranfers) lined up against the George Andrews battalion as Alan Kearney, Kris Kioussis and former skipper Alan Mulcahy (also mid-season tranfer) set about taking the points from a desperate Dandenong - who are razor’s edge in regards to relegation. The Thunder’s best efforts were no match for the Sharks, as Nicholas Krousoratis snuck past the Thunder defence to smash in two first-half goals while James Riccobene finished the job soon after the resumption. Zaim Zeneli was noble in defeat parrying away a number of Sharks’ attacks - but his efforts weren’t enough to put the points in the Thunder’s pocket. Dandenong slips to last place on goal difference and has five rounds to snare a win and avoid demotion. It starts on Friday night against Avondale FC at home from 8.30pm.

It’s all apples for Rangers By JARROD POTTER SEABL - Round 13 RATTLING off dual victories over the Apple Isles’ finest, Dandenong strung together confident wins against Launceston and North West Tasmania. After struggling early, Dandenong hit its straps the only way it knows how - at both ends of the court. The Rangers bullied Launceston into a five-minute scoreless period as Dandenong went from 9-16 down, to 22-16 ahead in a lightning phase, but the visitors - even battling fatigue after a Friday night encounter with Bendigo - didn’t lie down. Well in the contest via the efforts of WNBL trio Alex Wilson (19 points, 10 rebounds), Mikaela Ruef (15 points) and Lauren Mansfield (13 points) the Tornadoes made it tough for Dandenong to suppress their versatile offence. From there the powers-thatbe dictated Dandenong’s demolition of the Launceston defence, with Clare Papavs (25 points), Tenaya Phillips (12 points) and Jacinta Kennedy (11 points) leaving the Tornadoes quite still.
Dandenong ramped up the pressure to nail another audacious run - from 58-50 to 68-50 - and the match was effectively out of the Tornadoes reach. A game clear with a game in hand over Geelong, the topranked Rangers’ women face Nunawading. In the SEABL men’s clash, Dandenong burnt off a dogged North West Tasmania outfit in a 94-83 victory. The Daequon Montreal Show continued to roll on as big ‘DQ’ nailed 13/24 from the field en route to 33 points, five assists and five rebounds. He had plenty of support from Lucas Walker (11 points, 8 rebounds) and Chuck Long (4 points, 9 rebounds, 5 rebounds) under the basket. Matt Owies (14 points) stepped up off the bench to continue to rattle off some impressive tallies. The win keeps Dandenong right in contention to take the top seed in the SEABL East with its trip to Nunawading this week.

borough Cougars’ women. Firing out of the blocks, Keysborough claimed an early 13-7 lead via Billie Lucas (20 points, 17 rebounds), who led the Cougars’ call in her usual up-tempo manner. It took a while for the Gulls to start soaring, but eventually the home side found its way, but not after a long, dogged fight from the Cougars. Trailing 29-33 at the main break, Keysborough could not keep up the intensity with an eight-point third term to give Chelsea the advantage. Chelsea carried on from there to take the 21-point win in the end, as Keysborough was left to wonder what could’ve been. Natasha Warden (8 points), Sarah Collins and Ashleigh Wright (6 points each) also stepped up offensively in tandem with Lucas. The Cougars’ men faced Mornington on Sunday afternoon after the Journal’s deadline. Keysborough host Blackburn and Maccabi respectively on Saturday night in the women’s and men’s competitions.

Lady Toy puts it all together By MICHAEL FLOYD GREYHOUND racing’s highest profile bridesmaid is no more following Lady Toy’s breathtaking last-to-first win in tonight’s $58,000 Group 2 McKenna Memorial at Sandown Park on Thursday evening. Despite qualifying four lengths faster than any other heat winner, Lady Toy was sent to the boxes an easing $3.40 favourite and was last soon after box rise which allowed her to drop down to the rail as the well supported Spring Leaf and Ballerino vied for the early lead. Past the post the first time, Lady Toy was sixth and began to make her move. She tacked onto What’s Chewing down the back and followed him beneath Lektra Concord. Past the 595m boxes, What’s Chewing railed under the lamp lighter Spring Leaf
while Lady Toy switched to the outer and in a memorable run to the line, Lady Toy prevailed by half a length. It was Lady Toy’s first win at group level in eight attempts having been placed on seven occasions. “Finally!” said trainer Brooke Ennis. “She’s always raced so consistently and tonight she just got the nice clear run that she needed. “I didn’t think she was going to get there as they came back past the boxes but she did and I couldn’t be more happy with her.” Her winning time of 34.05 was 0.01 faster than her heat win, a fact that was particularly pleasing for Ennis. “She got bunched up a little more and had to work a little harder this week than last so to put up that time is really pleasing.
“We’ve been really happy with her this week and she’s been well in herself and it was great she could put it all together tonight. The win took her prize money beyond $344,000, making her the sixth highest earning active greyhound in the country. “She’s such a great race dog, nothing fazes her at all. “She’s been second in four Group 1s and now has a group race behind her, we’re very proud of her.” Ennis was particularly effusive in her praise for Jim Psaila and Norma Gost who prepared the greyhound prior to joining her Lara kennel. “We’re very appreciative to Jim and Norma and thank them for allowing us to have the opportunity with her. “She was only going to be with us for the Perth Cup and six months

Stingrays up the Murray By JARROD POTTER WHAT was touted as a defining match in sorting out the TAC Cup puzzle this season turned out to be a straight forward solution for the Dandenong Stingrays. Murray’s competitiveness arrived a couple of hours too late when it battled Dandenong on Saturday afternoon - the visitors could only muster five behinds up until the half. Dandenong’s defensive end - led by All Australians Keiran Collins and Jacob Weitering - negated any forward momentum from Murray and the Stingrays’ midfield group similarly clamped down on anything wearing the Bushies’ colours. The highly anticipated Weitering/Collins versus Josh Scache All-Australian super battle was well and truly claimed by the Stingrays. Outside of a three-goal barrage in the third term, Murray was left embarrassed by Dandenong’s better teamwork and their ability to spread and run in waves. While the Vic Country contingent relished their first time back in the Stingrays’ ranks for a while, with Brandon White, Kurt Mutimer and Tommy Glen returning to Shepley Oval following the end of the national carnival, it was a num-

Even with sub-optimal conditions, the Burra didn’t buckle en route to a 101-point demolition of the Hammers as Matt Collett (5 goals), Jake Dunn (3) and Geoff Humphreys (3) had a field day in front of the sticks. The tried-and-tested hands of coach Ryan Goodes and Corey Wilkinson proved best in the quagmire alongside Tim Bacic and Daniel Morland. The win puts Keysborough on level pegging with Oakleigh District, split only by the narrowest of percentage - 176.13 to 174.47. The Burra faces Caulfield at home on Saturday. A gallant fight-back in the wet left Doveton Eagles close-but-no-cigar in a three-point demoralising loss to Skye. Trailing by 14 at the final break, the Eagles soared back into the clash - booting four goals - but the efforts of Jarrod O’Neill (2 goals) and Enayte Samadi (1) weren’t enough to get the Eagles across the line. Springvale Districts got to belt out the song for only the fourth time this season, taking a rousing 37-point win over Heatherton on the back of superb performances from Lachlan Morrey (3 goals) and Peter Heng (2).

Rowville got the leap on the Bulls - requiring the visitors to dig deep and return fire. After conceding three in a row, the Bulls charged back to boot six consecutively and pushed towards the front, but the close quarters were maintained through the opening half thereafter as neither side could break clear. The visitors started to overcome the best efforts of the Seebeck Oval faithful after half-time though. The fleet-footed Bulls’ midfield started the task and set up the forward line expertly. Craig Anderson and Shane Valenti sensationally returned from injury and resumed their battering work through the centre, while at either end Ziggie Alwan and Brett Dore menaced the taller Hawks’ brigade. Heated exchanges at three-quarter-time resulted in players from both sides being sent off, but by then the Rowville resolve had started to weaken and Noble Park seized the

ber of week-in, week-out familiar faces that got the job done. James Freeman (3 goals) kept his good form going up forward - proving too wily whether at ground level or in the air for the Bushies’ defenders - along with Jack Holden (2 goals) and Travis Young (1 goal) they proved a tricky trio for Murray to man. The only area of concern - and it’s becoming a persistent problem with the Rays - was its goal-kicking as the Dandenong men sprayed 17 behinds in their 11.17 (83) to 7.10 (52) triumph. “I was rapt with our intensity at the start of the game,” Dandenong coach Craig Black said. “We built it up to be a big game, second versus third... and our attack around the contest for the first quarter-and-a-half this week really set the tone for the rest of the game. “Our impact around the contest - we were really hard around the footy and again, I’d love to have kicked a few more goals, but our pressure and our attack on the footy is as good as I’ve seen at my time here.” Black praised the efforts of his Vic Country contingent, especially Kurt Mutimer - saying the midfielder played his best match in 2015 - and his All Australian defenders.

Coach Mick Fogarty gave one of his epic post-match pump-up speeches to help set the stage for the Bulls’ run home and he couldn’t have been more pleased with the complete effort of the full team. “It meant a hell of a lot - it’s this season really - it’s a season to establish ourselves as having a real, serious go come September,” Fogarty said. “It was a high-pressure game, both sides had a lot to play for.” Fogarty thought Valenti, Martin and Harper were dominant through the midfield to earn his best, but thought the whole side deserved credit for the stellar win. The news only gets better for Noble Park with best-and-fairest midfielder Sam Monaghan and young livewire Kevin Kean set to return after the bye when the Bulls head up the hill to face North Ringwood on 25 July.

Carnival is on the move By EWAN KENNEDY THE all-new Kia Carnival has style, and plenty of it. No longer is this a box on wheels bought by the family that needs - rather than wants a people mover. We love the big bold radiator grille and squared-off front of the new Carnival. The rear-side area has the newly fashionable slim window design and this ties in nicely with a rear end that’s shaped to appeal, yet is squared off and sensible. In a quest for easier driving and parking the Carnival’s body is slightly shorter and lower than before, but sits on a longer wheelbase to stretch the legroom in the cabin. Headroom is still plentiful. Seat layout is two individual seats in front; three in the centre row; two reasonable units in the back. The centre row has its two outer pews slightly wider than the centre seat. The centre seat backrest can be folded down to form a table, or can be removed altogether to give stretch out elbow room. There’s good luggage length and volume and various configurations of passenger / cargo space are offered. The rearmost
three seats have a 60/40 split arrangement, one or both sections can be folded completely flat to provided uninterrupted boot space. There’s stretch out legroom that gives the sort of space normally only found in a limousine. Ease of entry to the rearmost seats is better than average, though this area is probably best left to the younger and nimbler. Space in the rear seat is good without being outstanding, but that’s not unusual in this class. Even with all seats in use there is still good luggage space. Carnival has a full suite of crash avoidance or mitigation features, including rollover mitigation and brake cornering control. Big people movers need plenty of power when loaded with people and stacks of stuff. Kia has been smart in offering Carnival with a 3.3-litre V6 petrol or a big torque 2.2-litre turbo-diesel. Clever design results in Kia’s all-new Carnival being more an eight seat sedan than it is a people mover. It provides impressive comfort, space and quality of ride. Entry and exit to the front
Who says people movers have to be square and boring? Certainly not Kia. two rows of seats is simple, there’s the usual hassle for older and/or larger people getting into the rearmost seats. However as this is a low-set people mover not a high-riding SUV those difficulties are minimised. Handling is competent enough and sensible drivers will never get anywhere near the Carnival’s limits. do push it too hard or enter a corner faster than expected because of inattentive driving the big Kia will do whatever it can to avoid crash, or at least minimise its consequences. It’s interesting to note that Kia Australia even employs Australian suspension and steering people to work on their people mover. Smart move.

you need to juggle feet to get the parking brake off and the Carnival moving. Presumably the parking brake is like this to suit the Americans, hopefully the first update of the big Kia will see it following the European route of using an electric handbrake. Engine performance is good, even with a decent load back there.

FORGET the baseball cap-onbackwards, tatt-toting, doofdoof music-crazy drongo. Believe it or not, there are people out there who want to drive a pumped-up little car without appearing to show off. The Nissan Pulsar SSS sedan ticks the boxes of a perky performer with restrained exterior and quality yet unremarkable interior - in effect a practical package with a stack of luggage space. Following the comeback of the Pulsar SSS hot hatch, the SSS sedan heralds the introduction of the Pulsar Series II, with the car taking the place of the Pulsar Ti in the model line-up, enjoying the same specification but with the addition of the 1.6-litre DIG (direct injection gasoline) turbo engine, SSS body kit and rear park assist. While the price of the outgoing Ti was $29,990 plus onroads, the Pulsar SSS sedan is priced from $26,990 for the manual version and $29,290 for the automatic. The Pulsar ST-L sedan gains satellite navigation with 5.8-inch touch screen, reversing camera with guidelines and Bluetooth audio streaming, all the while receiving a price reduction of $1200 from the manufacturer’s list price. Additional value has also been added to the Pulsar hatch range, highlighted by a $3800 reduction in the MLP of the Pulsar SSS hatch. The ST-L gains rear park assist while also receiving a price cut of $1600. The Pulsar ST-S hatch has been discontinued. Despite its own body kit, the Pulsar SSS sedan fails to mix it with warm-hatch rivals with their chiseled looks, flash colours and fancy wheels. Restraint is the catchword. However, the Pulsar SSS sedan’s plain appearance sees it hold the surprise element at the traffic lights when, thanks to turbo power, it sees off more sporty looking machines. The illusion is maintained on the inside with the most unspectacular decor consisting of hard plastic surfaces, subdued colour, flat seats lacking sup-

port and a generally drab ambience. On the plus side, there is plenty of space for shoulders and knees and driver visibility is good. Then there is the cavernous boot, with 510 litres of room, a third more than the Pulsar hatchback. It manages that with a full-size spare aboard. Pulsar SSS sedan has a 5.8inch touch screen with satellite navigation and rear-view camera with guidelines, six-speaker sound system and Bluetooth connectivity. Highlight of the new SSS is the engine, a 1.6-litre turbopetrol pumping out 140 kW at 5600 rpm and 240 Nm 2000
rpm, which replaces the 1.8-litre motor of the displaced Ti. This can either be connected to a six-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable automatic transmission for those prepared to pay almost $3000 more. Six airbags are on board and there’s an extensive line-up of active safety technology - antilocking brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist, plus vehicle dynamic and traction control. Those who like thunder with their lightning are destined to be disappointed with the Pulsar SSS. With 140 kW on tap, the car fairly skips along, but fails to exhibit aural attitude like some of its sportier rivals. Softer suspension settings and light steering feel also add blandness to the driving experience but keep occupants in comfort even on bad surfaces some rivals would serve up to passengers. The six-speed manual gearbox was not so accommodating, the driver having to contend with the two-three / five change-up misstep occurring a couple of times on test. Over the period, the sedan regularly exceeded eight litres per 100 kilometre fuel consumption over a mix of city and open-road driving. It’s got a way to catch up to the Mazda3 SP25 sedan, while Subaru WRX sedan lovers need not apply. However, Pulsar SSS sedan buyers save a poultice on price and there’s always that element of surprise in performance off the mark.
