Cran theft auto FIVE teenagers have been caught after a dramatic crime spree through Casey this month which involved a number of violent car-jackings, along with a 14-year-old boy being robbed in broad daylight. In one of the car jackings the offenders allegedly pulled over a 2015 Mercedes-Benz and dragged the driver out of the car before making off in his vehicle. Meanwhile other cars were stolen after thieves broke into residents’ homes while they were sleeping and grabbed their car keys. The teens, all aged 16 and 17, were

arrested last Thursday in Cranbourne and Dandenong in the early hours of the morning. One has been remanded in custody while the other four have been charged and released on summons. Beginning Sunday 5 July the teens were purported to have been involved in several car-jackings and home thefts which allegedly saw them steal a 2011 Audi Q5 from Waterways, a 2015 Mercedez Benz C200, a 2010 Audi A3, a 2015 Subaru Liberty and a Hyundai Santa Fe. During one incident about midday on Tuesday 7 July the offenders confronted a victim in the Dandenong Plaza car park and demanded he hand

over the keys to his Holden Commodore. When the victim refused, the offenders smashed his car with a stick and ran off. An hour later the same offenders confronted a 14-year-old boy in Dunblane Road, Noble Park, and stole his bag and mobile phone. That night, about 8pm, the group used the stolen 2011 Audi to force a passing driver in a 2015 Mercedes Benz to pull over on Phillip Road in Hallam. The offenders then converged on the car, dragged the victim out of the driver’s seat and used his keys to flee in the vehicle.

number of garage doors being left unlocked. “Imagine if you were home and woke up to a group of offenders in your house - it would be quite horrific,” Act Sen Sgt Hedge said. “People need to start having a look at their own security, especially at night.” Detective Sergeant Rodney Maroney, from the Embona Taskforce investigating armed robberies, said police were “happy to get the offenders off the street”. “They were doing a mini crime spree and it wasn’t going to stop until they were arrested,” he said. The investigation is ongoing.

Police found the stolen Audi a couple of days later dumped in Pepperbush Circuit, Cranbourne. On Thursday 9 July, about 3am, police arrested three offenders at a property in Kirkham Road, Dandenong South, and another two at a property in Cranbourne. Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Darron Hedge said police had been called to an increasing number of garage burglaries where doors were left open and keys were taken from inside homes and used to steal cars – with those involved believed to be associating with the same groups committing the car-jackings. He said it was hard to believe the

Man bailed to drug house

UK girl on Anzac Day plot charges

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

A MAN accused of endangering people’s safety with a home-made firework has been bailed to stay in Hampton Park with a live-in landlord and trafficker who had cultivated drugs at the same address. Matthew Butler was granted bail on Monday 13 July over a string of offences including reckless conduct endangering serious injury for allegedly lighting the firework at a gathering in a garage and throwing it into a Cranbourne West street in January. He had failed in a bail application on 6 July, partly due to a lack of stable accommodation. At Monday 13 July’s bail hearing, Butler was described by his lawyer as having problems with alcohol, other substances and mental health issues but didn’t have any connection with the landlord’s offences. His Hampton Park landlord was

serving a community corrections order for trafficking and other drug offences, the court was told. A female friend of Butler’s, who is a tenant at the bailed address, told the court that the convicted landlord would move out by the end of July. The friend, a “stay-at-home mum”, whose children visit every second weekend, told the court that Butler would be “all right” with support of the therapeutic CREDIT bail program. She said Butler could drink “a hell of a lot” and “fairly often”, but didn’t think he was alcoholic. “Around me and my kids he’s different than when he’s around his idiot mates. “I’m aware he has some mental health issues. Around me, they’re under control. “I don’t see the same Matty as the police officers see.” According to police, Butler had

allegedly arrived unannounced at a home garage gathering with an unknown male and female and a firework, which was described by a witness as “looking like a coconut with a long piece of string”, on 15 January. Police informant Constable Jack Tuohy told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that Butler lit the string, then licked his fingers in an attempt to extinguish the fuse. He was heard to say “Oh f***”, then pushed open the garage door, and threw the explosive out onto Arena Rise. Witnesses then heard a loud explosion, two bangs, and saw smoke filling the garage, the court was told. When police arrived they saw a hedge alight as well as shrapnel and debris that had struck a car parked in a neighbour’s driveway. Butler’s lawyer said the applicant would plead not guilty to the firework-related charges, given only one

eye witness had identified him at the scene. “Even with the prosecution case at its strongest, after lighting it he tried to put it out and throw it away from where a large number of people were. “There was no one out on the street at the time... no statements that anyone was injured.” Butler’s lawyer said her client would also plead not guilty to a property-by-deception charge for allegedly trying to buy iPhones using false identification from a Ferntree Gully store on 30 April. Butler was also bailed over traffic charges, possessing a knuckle-duster and shop-stealing. Magistrate Ian Alger said he granted bail with “some reservations”. He imposed bail conditions including tri-weekly reporting to Narre Warren Police Station, a night curfew and a driving ban.

Suspicious car fire investigated POLICE are still investigating a suspicious car fire at Botanic Ridge on Wednesday 8 July. A fire crew was called to the blazing sports sedan in a field at Durga Court just after noon. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes, a CFA spokeswoman said. “Police were called in because (the crew) believed the fire

to be suspicious,” she said. Narre Warren Detective Senior Constable Daniel Jacobi believes the torched car is a Subaru. “I think it’s a Subaru just by the general outlook of the vehicle, but all the badges and tags have been removed or burnt away, we have no idea of the model,” he said. The car has been towed and will be inspected by the vehicle examination unit.

A MAN has been bailed after police raided a Cranbourne West property and found chemicals used to make explosives. Detectives were called to the Monahans Road property at 3pm on Monday, 6 July after early reports a clandestine drug lab was in operation at the site. Upon closer inspection the arson squad and an arson chemist were called to the property, after explosive materials were discovered inside.

A 16-YEAR-OLD girl from northern England has been charged after she was implicated in the foiled terror plot allegedly targeting Anzac Day services in Melbourne’s south-east. The girl was charged by counter-terrorism police after a warrant was executed at a house in Manchester on 3 April. She is accused of two offences under the UK’s Terrorism Act 2000 and will appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on 22 July. Police were led to the girl after investigating a 15-year-old boy from Blackburn in Lancashire, who was held on 2 April in connection with the Australian terror plot. The British boy has appeared at the Old Bailey in London charged with trying to incite beheadings and attacks on Australian Anzac Day commemoration services. In April a 200-strong joint state and federal police counter-terrorism team executed seven search warrants in Narre Warren, Hampton Park, Hallam and Eumemmerring as part of Operation Rising. As a result Harun Causevic of Hampton Park and Sevdet Ramdan Besim of Hallam were charged with conspiracy to commit acts done in preparation for, or planning, terrorist acts. A third teenager Mehran Azami, 19, of Narre Warren, was charged with importing weapons planned for use in the foiled plot. Two other Narre Warren men, aged 18 and 19, were released without charge. The girl from Manchester has been charged with collecting or making a record of information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing for an act of terrorism, or possessing a document or record containing information of that kind. The UK teen’s trial is scheduled to begin on 17 August in Manchester.

A tiger by the tale 1192137-EG29-15

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH ‘GREYHOUND-LIKE’ is exactly what independent Tasmanian tiger researcher Michael Moss likes to hear when contacted with an alleged tiger sighting. “It’s not common knowledge that the male thylacine has a slender face compared to the female and that the body narrows at the flanks much like a greyhound, so when I hear a description like this it adds that extra layer of credibility, Mr Moss said. Last week Mr Moss was contacted by Berwick resident, Rob Taylor who believes he spotted a Tassie tiger about three years ago on his way to Buxton. “It was dawn and I was on a regular drive on Wellington Road near

CASEY Highway Patrol is ready to roll out its latest squad car, which now has the technology to scan number plates instantly. The new BlueNet vehicle one of six state-wide - arrived at the Cranbourne precinct on Wednesday and is the first of its kind to be trialled in Casey. The BlueNet is the first police car in Australia to have an in-built Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system which allows it to scan number plates almost instantaneously and alert police if an unregistered or stolen car is driving past. It can also identify whether there is an outstanding sheriff’s warrant linked to the suspect number plate, or whether the

driver is unlicensed, disqualified or suspended. The mobile data terminal allows police to quickly conduct licence and vehicle checks without the need for radio communication to see if the car is stolen. Highway Patrol Unit Commander and Acting Senior Sergeant Pat Green praised the BlueNet’s ability to instantly “ping a suspicious car. “What it does is it automatically recognises a vehicle that is flagging for whatever reason, he said. “In normal cars it’s hit and miss. They have a computer in a normal car, and you type in the rego - if blokes are on patrol they might type in a hundred regos. “With the BlueNet, cars will be driving past it and if a car

flags, it sends a signal to the BlueNet which alerts police that something is wrong. Cameras are mounted on the exterior of the BlueNet, with everything captured by the in-car video system. The other five BlueNet cars are being deployed to the Highway Patrol units in Brimbank, Nunawading, Bendigo, Melbourne/Prahran and Frankston. “We’ve heard of the evidence which suggests a link between road trauma and people driving unregistered or unlicensed cars, Act Sen Sgt Green said. “If we can detect these people before they have an accident, if we can get those people off the road, then that should have a positive effect on road trauma in Casey.

Subway targeted

THIEVES are targeting Subway fast food eateries in Casey, with a Cranbourne store the latest to be hit. Since May Subway outlets in Narre Warren, Hampton Park and Dandenong have all been broken into and their safes robbed. It comes as the Cranbourne Subway on the South Gippsland Highway was hit about 5am on Wednesday 8 July. The offender smashed the back window of the store and attempted to

force open the safe but fled empty-handed when the alarm was triggered. A crowbar was left behind at the scene and seized by police. Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Darron Hedge said there had been a number of Subway robberies throughout metropolitan Melbourne this year, including the four in Casey since May. “They tend to be high level burglaries,” he said. “We’ve responded to some before and we’ve charged people in the past but whether it’s the same

people, we don’t know.” It’s understood some of the other Subway store robberies involved ram-raids and the thieves managed to take a quantity of cash. “They’re not stealing sandwiches,” Det Acting Sen Sgt Hedge said. Police have released CCTV images captured during the Subway robbery in Cranbourne. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Mental health system questioned By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

“It could happen to anyone unless we see change. “Our system is broken, and it needs to be fixed.” In his findings, State Coroner John Olle recommended that acutecare mental health patients should have access to therapeutic recovery units and specialist forensic psychiatrists prior to their release. Mr Foley said on Wednesday 8 July that “cases like this are always concerning”. “My department has only just received the Coroner’s recommendations and will consider them carefully.” He said such issues would be considered as the State Government developed its 10-year mental health strategic plan. On Monday 6 July, Mr Olle found the victim had died from mul-

MENTAL Health Minister Martin Foley has said that careful consideration will be given to a Coroner’s findings into a man who killed a work colleague after being released from Casey Hospital’s mental health ward days earlier. The findings into the 52-year-old Narre Warren victim’s death were released on 6 July, prompting his widow to pronounce the “broken” mental health system had let her family down. The victim’s wife told the News that she had pushed for the inquest because she didn’t want another family to go through the same torment. “My husband was in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong person,” she said.

tiple injuries and immersion in a home swimming pool in Narre Warren on 25 January 2009. The perpetrator - whose name was omitted in Mr Olle’s report had an “alcohol dependence disorder” and killed the victim during a mutual weekend drinking session. He had been released as an involuntary patient from Casey Hospital on 16 January after taking his parents hostage in a seven-hour siege two weeks earlier. Mr Olle’s inquest focused on the killer’s medical management, but he emphasised his role was not to lay blame. In his report, Mr Olle referred to the man making threats to kill beforehand, his frightened parents intending to take out intervention orders, and his instability and intimidation in the ward.

Two days before the fatal assault, a case manager interviewed the man and judged him to be threatening in manner but not a risk of harm to others, Mr Olle said. “(His) hallucinations and delusions were still present and real to him.” Mr Olle said the care by Monash Health staff was “not unreasonable or inappropriate” in the circumstances but “hindsight has revealed poor clinical decisions were made”.

Letters Some scared to talk RE: Same-sex marriage. People are reluctant to share their opinions, (sans Cr Crestani) for fear of being labelled a bigot. I am tired of being labelled homophobic (when I have many dear friends who are homosexual), or just because I do not hold the same opinion as the rainbow brigade. This debate is no longer about “who you love” but more about the power of a minority. To argue that “love is grounds enough for marriage” holds no ground. Let me explain: 1. I love my brother – can I marry him? Nope. 2. I love my (married) next door neighbour – can I marry him? Nope. 3. I want to have three husbands ... nope, can't. 4. I want to marry my 13-year-old lover ... nope, can't.

Brat is back SURELY as a nation we need to address the incredibly bad performance of Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon. He made me feel ashamed to be an Australian. This brattish behaviour certainly does not belong on the hallowed turf of Wimbledon. He not only let himself down, but also the rest of Australia. Bernard Tomic is a saint compared to Kyrgios and I would hope that Tennis Australia in view of Kyrgios’s behaviour will not allow him to represent this great country of ours in the Davis Cup. Surely there cannot be a double set of standards as far as Tennis Australia is concerned. If Bernard Tomic has been stood down, then so should Kyrgios. This boy needs to learn some manners and respect for the game, at least Tomic did not bring the game into disrepute, Kyrgios is arrogant and a disgrace to his parents, whom I have no doubt have done the best with what they have been given with respect to his upbringing, if I were his parents I would be hanging my head in shame. Perhaps Kyrgios should not believe all that is written about him and his potential greatness. Compared to the greats of the game this boy will amount to nothing unless he can get his emotions under control. Stella Edgar, Berwick.

I do strongly feel that the cinemas at Fountain Gate should show a wider variety of movies to cater for all residents within the area. I do understand the big commercial movies bring in the big money, but shouldn’t we be looking beyond that and maybe offer a variety of movies to cater for individuality? I often go to Belgrave to see some of the non-mainstream movies. However the venue is certainly not as accessible for disabled or wheelchair-ridden viewers. Craig, via email.

5. I love my dog, can I marry him? Nope, can't. I could continue infinitum. To quote ‘Mick’ “you can’t always get what you want”! To take the religious view: marriage is a sacrament. It does not belong to the state, it belongs to the churches. The state cannot change something that doesn’t belong to them. The only reason the state began registering marriages was to keep track of who was married to whom. Don’t open the Pandora’s box to other minority groups who don’t like what we have in situ. To those who think this is about equality or human rights? We have no precedent in this country for breaches of human rights. We have never had slavery, so that argument doesn’t stick. We have never had separatism, so that argument is also moot. So don’t call me homophobic just because I don’t agree with you. I don’t call you a racist just because you don’t like the postman (my postman is Greek!) And yes, I have put my name in full because I don’t hide behind others and I trust this debate is an adult one and no recriminations or verbal attacks will follow my letter. Jenny Cuffe, Narre Warren South.

I WISH to add two further voices, that of my wife and my own, to the request that Village Cinemas Fountain Gate show a full and broad range of movies catering for all tastes, ages, ethnicity etc. Their view of what the public wants to view is extremely narrow. We’re tired of having to travel to either Camberwell or Belgrave to view what are sometimes referred to as 'arthouse’ movies. I’m sure there are hundreds of folk in this region, perhaps thousands, who feel the same way. Peter, via email.

I HAVE just read your article re choice of films to be shown at Village Fountain Gate. It distresses me to think that such decisions can be made that prevent some members of the local community to see films of their choice, without having to travel further distances which are not always convenient. Isn’t this a form of censorship? There are so many violent movies on offer that it seems to me that a movie such as 'Far From The Madding Crowd’ would be appreciated by far more people than is thought. E. Sparks, via email. I support Mr Karpish in his views about the Fountain Gate Cinema. I’m in my seventies, not an intellectual and don’t like violent films. Each week I read the reviews in the Herald Sun and think “I would like to see that“ only to find I have to travel to one of the Palace theatres. It’s not that I’m incapable of driving there, although I have had a painful knee for nine months, it’s all the extra costs of petrol from Pakenham and parking fees, also I prefer when visiting an area like that, that I have a secondary reason for making the visit. It usually means that I don’t see the film. I know the Cameo has good films from time to time but I don’t see them published in the papers that I read. Also it takes approximately the same time as a visit to Brighton with just as many park-

ing problems. Thankyou for highlighting the cinema problem, I have lived with the hope that Pakenham would get its own cinema one day, but it would still end up with the same “dumbing down“ of the population. I think Fountain Gate got its bad reputation due to Kath and Kim and Fountain Lakes, as could be seen by David Jones not being part of the shopping centre due to the fact that it didn’t feel the right clientele was there. I hope you succeed in your quest for good films not violent blockbusters, the last good film I saw there was “Paper Planes". Faye, via email. MOST certainly I would be delighted to see better movies at Fountain Gate. It would be a weekly outing if some quality movies were shown. As it is now - a visit maybe every three or four months. Anne, via email. Mr Karpish, maybe you need to be careful about your impression about Narre Warren as you’re clearly defamatory in your statement. You’re implying something of which you’re admittedly self-disgruntled by. Maybe you need to speak to me before making such defamatory conclusions. Don’t throw stones from your glass house mate. MIKE’S CARPET DISCOUNTERS We’ve got you covered!

Crash repair By LACHLAN MOORHEAD VICROADS is drawing up a roundabout proposal for a treacherous Pearcedale intersection which claimed the life of a 19-year-old girl in May. In a letter to Hastings MP Neale Burgess sent earlier this month, Acting Roads Minister Natalie Hutchins confirmed VicRoads was currently developing a “roundabout proposal” to “improve safety” at the intersection of Robinsons Road and the Westernport Highway. In the meantime, while funding is gathered, Ms Hutchins said VicRoads was considering “interim safety” measures, which could include “move-

ment restrictions” at the intersection. More than 6500 residents have signed an online petition, launched by Mr Burgess in June, putting pressure on the government for a roundabout at the site after 19-year-old Olivia Steadman-Meconi was killed at the intersection when her car crashed into a Ford Ranger ute just before 6.30pm on 29 May. Less than two years earlier, in August 2013, a 36-year-old Mornington motorcyclist died at the same intersection after crashing into a car. Local residents say they have been calling for a roundabout at the site for years, but it was never built.

In 2012, under the Liberal Government, a $1.64m upgrade saw turning lanes, rumble strips, lighting and extra signage built at the intersection. But resident Maureen Smollen told the News last month it wasn’t enough. “When work was started on the intersection everyone thought it was going to be a roundabout, but in their wisdom they decided to just put in turning lanes - this has not stopped the accidents,” Ms Smollen said. Another resident Shannon Smith, who was first on the scene after the fatal crash in May, said he has assisted in accidents at the notorious intersection more than 10 times.

Porsche was carjacked By LACHLAN MOORHEAD TWO men and a teenager were arrested after a $150,000 Porsche was carjacked in Fitzroy on Saturday night and found in Hampton Park hours later. A 24-year-old Springvale man, a 22-year-old Surrey Hills man and a 16-year-old from Keysborough were remanded by police, with one charged for theft offences and kept in custody, one charged and bailed, and one released pending further inquiries.

The arrests came after the three offenders allegedly rammed a white Mitsubishi into the back of the Porsche about 10.40pm on Saturday 11 July while the 44-year-old Porsche driver, from Bundoora, was stopped at traffic lights on Nicholson Street, near Reid Street, in North Fitzroy. When the victim got out of his car to take a photo of the damaged Porsche one of the offenders confronted him, pulled out a gun and demanded his car keys. The Bundoora man handed

over his keys. Another offender got into the driver’s seat of the Porsche, while the other two got back in the Mitsubishi and the two cars drove off on Nicholson Street, heading north. Police rushed to the scene and searched the area but could not find the stolen Porsche. Later that night, about 4am, detectives found the Porsche in Karoonda Way, Hampton Park, and arrested the three offenders, after police responded to a suspicious loitering report.

Leap into tax season time

It’s one for the books

THE end of the financial year is here and it’s time to leap into tax season armed with your receipts. For some of us, tax time can be scary not knowing if we will get a refund or be slogged with a hefty tax bill. To help ease your fear here is a list of last minute quick tax helpers that just might snap you a refund this year. 1. Did you know you can claim deductions for a home office? You don’t need to be self-employed but if you are required to handle emails from home you’re entitled to claim a tax deduction for a percentage of your running costs and equipment. Speak to your tax agent to find out what you can claim. 2. Now is the time to update your tools. The government is offering a $20,000 rebate for small business, so you can buy now and claim a tax deduction in the same year and help reduce a possible tax bill. The legislation is yet to be approved by the senate, so make sure you chat to your tax agent before you head out on a spending spree. 3. Small purchases can be claimed, too. If you’ve bought a keyboard, mouse, wifi modem or any type of small business purchase, it can quickly add up and lead to a healthy deduction off your income. 4. Get spending for next year. Experts say prepaying for expenses related to investment properties up to 12 months in advance can be used as a deduction in the current financial year. Income protection insurance, membership fees and subscriptions can all be paid in advance and taken into consideration for this financial year.

Manufacturing key By CASEY NEILL SCIENCE, technology, maths and engineering are the keys to future employability. This was one message from the Casey Cardinia Region’s Manufacturing: Change and Opportunity forum, held at Chisholm Institute’s Berwick Campus last Wednesday 8 July. South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) executive officer Andrew Simmons said some experts were predicting up to 70 per cent of jobs would require science, technology, maths and engineering (STEM) training. If that wasn’t enough incentive for students to take the STEM path, he said these occupations generally paid higher wages. “There’s a good opportunity to push that to our young people as well,” he said. Mr Simmons said manufacturing was not the “dark, dumb and dirty” industry it had been in the past. “This is not a destination for kids that are struggling,” he said. “This is a destination for their best and brightest.” He said technology was progressing rapidly and jobs and indus-

SEMMA executive officer Adrian Boden. 126035 tries were changing with it. “As things become more computerised and automated, it’s the back-end where jobs are,” he said. MetamorphCG CEO and founder Simon Maselli said those heading into the engineering field needed a broader skill set than ever before. “I can’t find kids who have got the skills that are needed now to be effective,” he said.

“A lot of the kids that come out now are book smart. “They can problem solve on paper but not in the real world.” South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) executive officer Adrian Boden said “half the population thinks we don’t make anything anymore”. But there are 11,000-plus manufacturing companies in the south east, he said, representing 10 per

cent of Australia’s manufacturing workforce and 40 per cent of Victoria’s. And every direct manufacturing job, Mr Boden said, created four to five jobs in other industries. “That’s why you need manufacturing,” he said. He highlighted local businesses excelling in Australia and overseas. “It’s not all about doing a completely new product. It’s about doing something that’s been done before better,” he said. Monash University’s mechanical and aerospace engineering department head Professor Chris Davies spoke about metal 3D printing or “additive manufacturing”. “Education is really how we protect ourselves against someone buying the machine and dumping it in a low-cost labour country,” he said. “We have the making of a very strong additive manufacturing industry in Melbourne.” Prof Davies said metal 3D printing reduced the design cycle and therefore the time to take a product to market. “And we can design things that were unable to be manufactured previously,” he said.

Plenty to say By CASEY NEILL KATE Weiss has made the journey from surviving to thriving and is sharing her secrets in Springvale. The Table of Plenty founder will be the keynote speaker at SEBN’s Showcasing Women breakfast at Highways, from 7am to 9am on Friday 24 Kate Weiss. July. A search for innovative food solutions following the birth of her daughter with a disability led Ms Weiss to start Table of Plenty in 2006. Major supermarkets now stock 18 of her products and the company now has a turnover close to $10 million - and a vision to double that in the next two years. Ms Weiss won the 2014 Telstra National Business Woman of the Year title, provides work for people with disabilities and wants to inspire a move towards a healthy and authentic way of living. The event is $55 per person or $500 for a table of 10. RSVP by Monday 20 July to sebn@cgd. vic.gov.au or PO Box 200, Dandenong 3175.

Crestani vs Aziz in rift By LACHLAN MOORHEAD TENSIONS reached fever pitch at Casey Council last week, when Councillor Rosalie Crestani challenged several of her colleagues who, she claimed, had raised partisan motions. Not for the first time Cr Crestani found herself to be a lone dissenting voice last Tuesday night when she challenged councillors Sam Aziz and Amanda Stapledon over motions they raised putting pressure on the Labor State Government. Lingering hostilities saw Cr Aziz label Cr Crestani’s comments “disgusting”, while Cr Crestani hit back asking him to “grow up” after the Springfield Ward councillor later referenced her previous dissent when he brought forward an unrelated matter of urgent business. Casey Mayor Mick Morland ruled Cr Aziz’s comment out of order. The verbal barbs came after two separate motions - advocating for road upgrades in Casey and the Port of Hastings - were raised by Cr Aziz and Stapledon and opposed by Cr Crestani. Cr Crestani dissented against both motions on the grounds councillors Aziz and Stapledon were trying to make political mileage at the expense of the Labor Government.

Casey Councillors Sam Aziz and Rosalie Crestani traded verbal barbs during much of Tuesday night’s council meeting. In November’s State Election Amanda Stapledon ran as the Liberal candidate for the seat of Narre Warren North, while Casey councillors Susan Serey and Geoff Ablett also ran for the Liberals in the seats of Narre Warren South and Cranbourne respectively. Cr Crestani ran as a candidate for the Rise Up Australia Party. Cr Aziz hit back at Cr Crestani, calling her implications “disgusting” and responding that the City of Casey advocated on behalf of its residents, no matter which major party held office.

The first motion saw Cr Aziz urge council to organise a meeting with the Minister and Shadow Minister for Roads to reiterate Casey’s road priorities. This was carried after a division was called, with Cr Crestani and Cr Rafal Kaplon the only ones voting against it. Soon after Cr Stapledon then asked council to write to both major parties to re-affirm the City of Casey’s advocacy for the Port of Hastings over the Andrews Government’s preferred Bay West project. Again a division was called, with Cr Crestani the only one dissenting.

Council fenced in over costs A CASEY councillor has questioned why the City of Casey no longer helps residents pay for the cost to repair a fence that backs onto a reserve. Cr Geoff Ablett last Tuesday successfully called for a report into the “legal reasons” as to why council no longer pays up to half the cost of repairing or replacing a damaged fence with “all residents”. In June 2014, council amended its Shared Cost Fencing Policy which previously directed the council to contribute up to half the cost of a standard paling fence for some reserves. Cr Ablett said there were many people in the community frustrated at the policy change. “There’s a large amount of people who don’t understand how council cannot pay 50 per cent,” he said at a council meeting on Tuesday night. “They see it as unfair.” Council resolved to have a report on the issue completed by September. At the time of the policy change last year City of Casey Manager Engineering David Richardson

Casey Council will investigate the legal reasons as to why it no longer pays up to half the cost for repairing a fence backing onto a reserve. said the council amended the policy to align with its “legal obligations”. “Council is obligated to share fencing costs where council is an occupier of the land,” he said. “Council is not considered an occupier where there is general public access to land, such as reserves.”

Jones makes her mark cleanly By JARROD POTTER IT’S BEEN a hectic football year already for Cranbourne Football Club midfielder Courtney Jones. Jones, 14, from Carrum Downs, had her football world drastically expanded this year as she started appearing for more than just her beloved Eagles team. She’ll remember 2015 as the year she stepped up to the state ranks and became a national champion. Her efforts helped shape Vic Metro’s Youth Girls national championship triumph and Jones can also reminisce on her gutsy performance in the South East Juniors interleague campaign with the Demons just pipped at the final post in the Youth Girls final by Yarra JFL. But there’s still one more team Jones will feature in this season - the School Sport Victoria (SSV) under-16 schoolgirls side. Jones will bring her hard-edged approach to footy to the SSV side, battling for one more national championship to add to a burgeoning football resume. It is an amazing amount of football to digest - especially as this is the first year it all clicked into place for the dominant midfielder. “I didn’t realise there were state teams and everything like that before this year,” Jones said. “Just being able to get into those sides and really knowing that I can play footy and I can be good at what I do is really good.” All this at 14 years old makes for a lot

of footy - which the St Peter’s College student aptly described as “tiring” - but she wouldn’t trade her latest selection for any amount of rest or relaxation. “I felt really happy and really surprised as well at the same time to make the team,” Jones said. “There were a lot of good players out there - good girls who were doing so well. “I’d like to win again - that’s for sure - and just being able to bond with a new group of girls and being able to get a better knowledge of footy and just improving on every aspect of the game possible.” Whether in the midfield - streaming up the ground, taking on the defence and booting some monster kicks up the centre - down back or in the forward line, all that matters is being on the park. “I like playing forward as well and my

coaches tell me I always do well in the midfield,” Jones said. “I don’t really care as long as I get to play, that’s really it.” She encouraged any girls interested in pursuing the oval ball code to give it a try as football has plenty of chances for them to shine. “All those younger girls out there - if you’re interested in it there are a lot of opportunities out there and just go for it,” Jones said. Jones will head down the Princes Highway later this week as the SSV’s under-16 campaign runs in Geelong from 18-25 July.

BIG V THE hard way is turning into the Casey way as the Cavaliers managed to fight back against the fast starting Thoroughbreds to claim a six-point overtime nail-biter. Trailing all night against a fired up Melton, Casey Cavaliers had to dig deep to get back into the contest after Melton’s three-man offence Blake Allison (31 points), Ivan Harris (26 points) and Jeff Crowe (16 points) rattled off early headaches. “They had the better of us really for three quarters,” Casey coach Stewart Baird said. “They always have a pretty vocal crowd and the drive over there and it took us a while to get going. “We were worrying about stuff we have no control of and needed to get back to what we’ve been doing.” The Cav-alry arrived in the second half as Casey clamped down defensively on the Thoroughbreds. Brent Hobba (24 points, 13 rebounds) and Ben Louis (23 points) in particular savoured their defensively minded tasks to negate Melton’s finest piercing them on the scoreboard. From there it was a matter of time before the Cavs sparked into top gear - rattling off 23-18 in the final term to force overtime before tearing away to take the 101-95 triumph. “Defensive efforts were really important - Brent Hobba did a great job on Cameron McCallum - he’s their big and having a great year,” Baird said. “Ben Louis - despite being six or seven centimetres undersize - did a really good job on their import (Ivan Harris) and almost kept him scoreless through the last quarter which was really important. “We locked down defensively and it sounds a bit cliche, but the history of our season

will show that when we play good defence we create great offence. “Our great D sets us up then the offence takes care of itself.” Casey’s win snared the Division 1 Watson Conference number one seed heading into finals and another win - either this week heading out on Saturday night to Warrandyte before hosting Camberwell in a firstversus-second showdown to end their inaugural Division 1 home and away campaign. “You always want winning form coming into finals, but if you’ve got winning form from games that are really tough, it’s that much more beneficial,” Baird said. “Really pleased with the win but I was pleased that they were able to lock away first place in our conference. “If we can get one more win then we’ll lock away first place overall, which could be important come grand final time and if we get the W we equal our best ever regular season with 17 wins. “You can’t help but be proud of what the guys have achieved in their first year up in the higher division.” The Cavaliers women are at risk of elimination from Big V Division 2 finals contention after a 54-74 loss to Mornington. Sitting one win back from Melbourne University and Coburg, Casey can keep its season alive - at least theoretically alive with a win over Melbourne University on Saturday night at home before hoping on remaining results to fall their way. The Cavs’ Youth Men have no such concerns about making finals - sitting second in the division following an 8368 win over Melton on the back of a whopping 37-point, 10-rebound haul from Alistair Parker. The Youth Men face Corio Bay at home on Saturday in their last match of the homeand-away season.

Peak of performance

Dreams doused... at both ends!

By JARROD POTTER

By JARROD POTTER

STARTING their rise towards the peak of Australian swimming, a group of Casey TigerSharks was selected to hone its skills at a series of development camps recently. The TigerSharks swimmers secured their places in the Swimming Victoria Development Squad’s select Performance Squad with outstanding results at this year’s state and national championships. The squad is put together with an eye towards developing future Victorian swimming talent and creating strong opportunity for success at the national level or even getting onto the Australian team. National age champion Nick Galileos heads the list of TigerSharks added to the Performance Squad which went into a camp recently for the Victorian Development Program. Also earning their places in the squad were Zoran Biskup, Natalie Grey, Kyle Young, Jake Mitreski and 13-year-old tandem Joshua Yong and Jack McDonald. “These kids are on the radar and being developed towards getting VIS funding and Swimming Australia Scholarship levels,” Casey TigerSharks coach Ben Hiddlestone said. “Working away at it - but this is where you make the results for nationals, where no one is looking during winter and you just have to plug away in training.” Hiddlestone knows these training programs open the door for swimmers to move onto bigger and better things with Commonwealth Games medallists Josh Beaver and Matson Lawson having run the gamut through the programs en route to the Australian team. “It’s is our next crop, absolutely. "I remember when it was Josh Beaver, Matson Lawson, Craig Watson and those sorts at the development level and we got three onto major teams,” Hiddlestone said. “So, it’s major achievement - other people go from here to the VIS to Australian swimming so these guys are on the first rung of that pathway.” The club is also holding a novice meet for 13-and-under swimmers this Sunday at Casey ARC at 1.45pm. For more information, contact the club at sue@rippon.com.au or on 0407 557 130. Swimming Victoria 2015-16 Development Squad Casey TigerSharks are Zoran Biskup (16), Nicholas Galileos (15), Natalie Grey (15), Kyle Young (14), Jake Mitreski (14), Joshua Yong (13) and Jack McDonald (13).

WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE AGONISINGLY close once again to taking their elusive first victory, Casey Comets couldn’t quite summon the right stuff against a high-flying Boroondara. Playing in horrendous conditions on Sunday evening at the State Football Centre, the Comets sparked their season back to life with a confidence-boosting draw against the top-ranked Eagles. The only thing getting into the net through the first half was rain as Rachel Binning and Laura Croft held firm the Comets’ efforts. Casey held on gallantly throughout the clash, making and squandering a few chances, but most importantly keeping the Eagles from cashing in and taking the easy win most would have expected in this lopsided WPL battle. Mykaylin Rosenquist was the toast of Casey as she struck the Comets ahead in the 80th minute, but the Comets’ resolve was shattered in the dying minutes. A long-bomb crushed Casey’s chances of an inaugural win and allowed the Eagles to save face by taking a point away from a forgettable performance. The Comets now face South Yarra on Friday night and with six rounds remaining in the WPL season a couple of wins will be needed to avoid relegation. NPL1 EAST In NPL1, Dandenong City brought back the points following its regional road trip, knocking over Murray United 3-0. City dictated the tempo against their country rivals, finding their way to the back of net via an early confidence builder from Ash Cattermole. United looked for the reply desperately til the final minutes when two late nails in the coffin via Keegan Ziada and Alex Rojas destroyed any hopes of a hometown highlight. Dandenong City sits fifth in NPL1 East and faces FC Bulleen Lions at home on Saturday. STATE LEAGUES The Comets SL1SE men’s side were knocked over by Mornington SC in a Friday night lights spectacular at Comets Stadium. Casey’s peninsula region rivals found the lead via Shane Tagliaferro and held on to raid the points and leave the Comets in ninth out of 12 with a 3-6-6 record. Life was a little easier in State League 2 South East with Berwick City 2-0 victors over Old Scotch SC via perennial goalscorers Alpha Turay and Orlando Mejias. - Doveton SC - booting away 3-2 with similar efforts from its star strikers Farai Murwira and Phoenix Lawton - took the wins ahead of the run home. Berwick City sits second on the ladder and finds itself well in the running for promotion while Doveton is sixth and trails City by six points. Berwick City versus South Springvale women was washed out.

Straight runs to a big win USUALLY young children are told not to run on the road but at Saturday’s Little Athletics Victoria Road Relay championships it was not just allowed but encouraged. There were no cars burning rubber on the famous Sandown racecourse as the V8 Supercars were swapped for the rubber soles of a sea of little athletes fanging down the main straight. Casey’s under-14 girls side stormed to the front and held their lead down the Sandown main straight as Tenielle Morrell, Rebecca Henderson and Matisse Lazzarri knocked over a 37.27 minute run in the three-by-three-kilometre race. The power-packed line-up of Bailley Morrell, Ethan Harris and Elijah Roewer were just pipped into second as Casey under-11 boys fell 18 seconds short of the gold claimed by Sandringham. Cranbourne’s under-7 girls - Georgia Courtis, Amelia Crossley and Taya McDonald - ran away with an emphatic win as well. Another Cranbourne LAC trio - Jackson Crossley, Aaron Moran and Rhys Hadfield - finished second in the under-13 boys race, only finishing eight seconds behind Nunawading and the under-14 boys - Nai Abderahmin, Lochlan Jouvelet and Tristan Abbott - were also knocked off by Nunawading.

A little rain must fall By JARROD POTTER WEATHER for ducks is also the prime forecast for Casey Scorpions as they surged through the sleet and soggy conditions to knock over VFL powerhouse Port Melbourne. From the get-go Casey had the match by the throat as it ran away with a 10.9(69) to 2.8 (20) victory. Casey tackled ferociously, going past the 100 tackle mark for the second week in a row as the Borough found itself besieged across the park. Those hard-tackling Scorpions also translated the doggedness into opportunities in front of the big sticks as a fleet of small forwards and midfielders got under the packs and feasted on the ground work necessary to excel. In the freezing cold, with raindrops spitting down like bullets, Casey found another gear to shake off Port’s best efforts. It was a third-quarter surge that killed off the Borough’s hopes Jayden Hunt (2 goals) had it on a string in the premiership quarter, booting both his majors alongside fellow Melburnians Aiden Riley and Jack Grimes. It sunk Port Melbourne’s spirits even further into ever-increasing puddles around the ground as Casey rattled off a few more to take the 49-point triumph. Casey coach Justin Plapp thought it was a proud day for his men, especially as it was across the board from the Development League all the way through to the peaks of the senior line-up. “Very challenging conditions for the players - we certainly respect what both teams had to endure throughout the game and we’re really happy with the performance and the result,” Plapp said. “I felt that Port was a team we really respect... to knock them off at home in those trying conditions was a great result for our club “Reserves team had a fantastic

Bridging the gap to the VFL top four - Casey now sits in a five-team logjam from fourth to eighth on seven wins apiece. Plapp said every match from now on is worth double as Casey looks to not only move up in the rankings, but also guard against anyone mak-

ing a late run to take their place in the VFL finals’ equation. “Every game that we play now is an eight point game,” Plapp said. “Got to keep winning and stay in contact with the top eight… the bottom line is we can’t get ahead of ourselves… take each game on its merits. “This week against Northern Blues - this is a monster for us from that point of view as well.” Casey battles it out against Northern Blues on Saturday afternoon (18 July).

It’s a wrap for Wade By DAVID NAGEL IF MATTHEW Wade the policeman comes across a criminal in Swan Hill with a record as long as his... the bloke is in for one hell of a long stay behind bars. Wade, Tooradin’s champion footballer of the last three and a half years, played his last game for the Seagulls on Saturday, before heading north to take up an 18-month contract as a First Constable with Swan Hill Police. And he takes with him a rap sheet that will stand the test of time. The gut-busting runner first rose to prominence at Nar Nar Goon, captaining the club to its droughtbreaking premiership win of 2010, and won dual best-and-fairest awards along the way. In 2011 he moved to Sandringham in the VFL, where he played alongside his premiership team-mate at the Goon, Brett Dore, and also with Berwick’s current-day skipper Madi Andrews. And then it was off to Tooradin, first as an assistant-coach to Tom Hallinan in 2012, where Wade has been captain, a three-time best-andfairest winner, an interleague and VCFL representative and was last year named captain of the Casey Cardinia Football League Team of the Year. Still in his mid-twenties, he

capped off the first half of his career by starring in the Defence All-Stars versus Emergency Services match at the Adelaide Oval on Anzac Day, in the curtain-raiser to the Port Adelaide-Hawthorn clash. The star on-baller, one of only a handful of the most respected players in the league, will continue to play the game he loves, giving the Swan Hill Swans, in the Central Murray Football League, the ultimate boost to its premiership hopes. He leaves with some terrific memories to reflect on. “It’s all happened pretty quickly to be honest, so I haven’t too much time to reflect, but it is a bit sad to be leaving Tooradin to head north,” he said. “I remember Tommy Hallinan approached me after I finished at Sandringham, I came down and had a meeting and straight away I knew it was for me, a great club, with passionate people, and it just felt right. “It’s a good country club, like Nar Nar Goon, but just in a bit higher league, and I warmed to it straight away.” Wade said his first year with the Seagulls, when they rode a magiccarpet ride to a preliminary final, was a real highlight of his football to date.

Tooradin champion Matt Wade played his last game for the Seagulls against Berwick on Saturday. Wade left for his new home Picture: DAVID NAGEL in Swan Hill on Monday. 141650 “That was my first year at the club and it was a great year, we had a couple of new faces and it was just an exciting time at the club,” he said. “We had a dream run, we were underdogs in every game but just kept winning time after time... it was an unbelievable run. “We beat some of the bigger clubs that year, Beaconsfield, Berwick and Pakenham, but there were just a couple at the top (Cranbourne and Narre Warren) that were a bit good for us… but it was an amazing year.” Wade said he is leaving the club in very good hands, with an amazing

amount of quality young footballers coming through. “It is great, but from a selfish point of view I’m leaving behind all these guys that are just coming along nicely,” he said. “In a couple of years, once they get a bit tighter, a bit more mature, the switch will be flicked and they’ll have a lot of good times together. “It’s all up to them now, to just stick together, to get behind Lachie (coach Lachie Gillespie) and continue what they’ve started.” But it will all be done without one of the champions of the game... all the best Wadey!

VWFL - DIVISON 1 AND 3 ARCTIC conditions could not stop Endeavour Hills claiming a perfect 10 - its 10th win from 10 starts in the Victorian Women’s Football League. Endeavour Hills continue to fire on all cylinders as the newly formed VWFL side continued its unbeaten streak - this week defeated Cranbourne at Casey Fields by 39 points. The wet-weather played havoc with both sides ability to mark or generally control the play, but the Falcons were able to barrel their way through the stoppages. Powering through the hard slog, the Falcons’ midfielders set up the forwards expertly as Siona Pilkington (3 goals) and Sarah Punton (2 goals) made the most of the superb performance by in-and-under centre workers. Mopping up off half-back, best on field Rebecca Sherry showed she’s a class above while Ash Ladson, Georgia Punton and Maria Pickering also featured in the headliners. “It’s an outstanding achievement,” Falcons coach Mark Haughton said. “It was one of those games… just so bloody cold... we were picking it up out of the pack and dropping it cause the hands weren’t working. “(The) amount of players Cranbourne threw around the ball… we kept ours outside, so we set up our clearance work and opened it up - transferred the ball to the middle a bit more. “They were handling it really well… their set-up around congestion you could see them going in and getting around the pack.” Haughton praised Hancock’s signature hard-edged efforts across the park while also calling attention to a smart day’s work for ruck Ash Seymour. “Ash Seymour in the ruck just controlled every stoppage,” Haughton said. “She’s a thinking ruck and very intelligent player and was working out to adjust to the game and basically controlled that area. “It was a massive team effort though everyone was switched on.” One month separates the Falcons from a perfect home-and-away record - starting this weekend against Kew at home. The coach puts it down to the positive attitude of the group and their ability to work together and produce the right results. “Talking to them at the start of the year with how they wanted to run things - structure, relating to each other, supporting each other - and that’s been something we continue to work on, even at training,” Haughton said. “The closeness of the girls is incredible, so we’ll just stick to our philosophy and make it work for the rest of the year.” CRANBOURNE’S march up the VWFL Division-1 ladder continued even in the heavy deluge with a 42-point triumph over Eastern Devils. An emphatic third quarter - led by Chloe McMillan (3 goals) and Kirsten Mcleod (2) - was enough to excise the Devils and give Cranbourne its seventh win in a row. Sitting half-a-game off the top of the ladder, the Eagles head out to Darebin this weekend.

Eagles eye the prize By DAVID NAGEL CRANBOURNE begins its final charge at the South East Football Netball League crown on Saturday when it makes the short trip down the highway to take on Tooradin. The Eagles will be fresh, after their final bye of the season, and will be high on confidence after a season-defining victory over archrival Narre Warren in round 11. Runners-up for the last three seasons, the Eagles will need to win five of their last six matches to secure a double-chance. Crunch games against Berwick (round 15) and Beaconsfield (round 17) loom large, but first Simon Goosey and his charges must negotiate the tricky trip to Westernport. Tooradin coach Lachie Gillespie respects his opponent highly but is looking forward to the contest. “I rate Cranbourne extremely highly, they’re well coached, they understand their game plan inside and out and they’ve got that Cranbourne confidence about them,” he said. “It’s a huge challenge for our group, but we’ve got no fear, there’s no pressure on us and we’re going out there to win some respect.” Gillespie said the loss of champion midfielder Matt Wade, who has moved to Swan Hill to pursue his policing career, wasn’t the end of the world. “We’ve lost Wadey now, but the players understand that just because he’s gone it doesn’t mean everything needs to fall over,” he said. “As disappointing as it is to lose him, the club rolls on and now it’s up to the younger guys to take ownership and take this club to the next step.” The Seagulls do have some quality youngsters, like Troy Dolan and

Tooradin's Justin McGrath lets out a mighty roar as Luke Nelson sneaks out the back for one of his Picture: DAVID NAGEL two goals for Berwick on Saturday. 141650 Andrew Proctor, but expect the Eagles to get the job done. There were only the three matches played in SEFNL on Saturday, with all games panning out pretty much as expected in the end. Narre Warren kept in touch of the top three with a resounding 72-point victory over an injury-ravaged Pakenham. The Magpies played their best footy in the third term, kicking 6.4 to 1.4, to extend a 27-point margin out to 57 by the final break. Kain Baskaya was the star, kicking five goals in his first game since

round two, while George Angelopoulos and Ben Wragg chimed in with three apiece. Stephen Morey held Kerem Baskaya to just one goal to be the Lions’ best player. Beaconsfield was wildly inaccurate in its 38-point victory over ROC at Holm Park Reserve. The Eagles dominated possession, with 25 shots at goal to seven, but kicked 2.6 and 3.7 in the second and third quarters to keep the Kangas in the hunt. Beau Dowler and Scott Meyer bagged a couple each for the winners, who had Jesse Linkins and

Damien Johnston in fine form through the middle of the ground. Dylan Chapman, who is going on holidays, played his last game for the season for the Kangas and finished off in style. A stunning five-goal burst has propelled Berwick to a 34-point victory over Tooradin at Westernport Oval. The Wickers trailed by a point at half time, but looked a different side after the break, kicking 5.2 to 0.3 to open up the contest. Tim Gunn was fantastic up forward, kicking six, while Michael Riseley was dominant in the third quarter across half back.

One thing is clear… nothing is clear By DAVID NAGEL PREDICTING the final five in the inaugural season of the South East Football Netball League is a nigh on impossible task after another fascinating round of matches on the weekend. In freezing cold conditions that tested the intestinal fortitude of the strongest of players, ROC caused an upset, bottom-side Tooradin almost repeated the dose, while a couple of double-chance contenders, Beaconsfield and Pakenham, were shown to be a little off the pace. ROC’s upset 32-29 victory over Beaconsfield at Holm Park Reserve has kept the Kangaroos’ slim finals’ hopes alive. The Kangas jumped the Eagles in the first quarter, taking a five-goal lead, a margin which was cut back to a solitary goal halfway through the contest. Most would have expected the Eagles to forge on to victory from there, but the visitors dug deep and responded. With Lauren Hargreaves, Gemma Stacey and Alexandra Kilpatrick sharing the goal-scoring duties, the Kangaroos skipped out to a fivegoal lead at the final break before holding on for a tenacious victory. Bianca Sanzaro (GS), Kylie Baker (C) and Gabby Stinear (WD) were solid four-quarter contributors for the Eagles. The rewards were huge for Berwick on Saturday, the Wickers jumping to fourth on the ladder af-

ter a hard-fought 27-24 victory over Tooradin. The Wickers were on top early, but a nine-goal-to-four burst in the third term saw the Seagulls draw to within one at the final break, and a second upset of the round looked likely. Berwick lifted however, and Sarah McDermott, Lynne Moyes and Emily LaRoche did just enough to get their side across the line.

Rachel Cole, Ebony Dolan and Dayle Willis were terrific for the Seagulls. Narre Warren has confirmed its premiership favouritism with a comfortable 39-27 triumph over Pakenham at Toomuc Reserve. The Magpies’ ninth-consecutive victory sees them jump a gameand-a-half clear at the top of the table, with a Round-17 clash against Hampton Park looming as their big-

gest challenge ahead of finals. Jade Heinrich, Leigh Taylor and Erin Clark, were dynamite through the midcourt for the winners, while Lauren Lenders, Meaghan Winter and Meaghan Cook all tried their hearts out for the Lions. Cranbourne had the bye while Hampton Park and Doveton had a week off after playing their Round-12 contest back on Good Friday.

Jetta sharpens up its image By EWAN KENNEDY

Timeless styling is a feature of Volkswagen's updated Jetta. Our test car was the Highline Sport.

THOUGH Volkswagen doesn’t like us calling the Jetta a Golf with a boot, that’s exactly what it is. Some buyers prefer sedans to hatches for a couple of reasons - a bigger boot in a sedan thanks to the car’s extra length, albeit without the large opening offered in hatches, and the ride comfort and body strength is

even better in sedans than the equivalent hatchbacks. The latter is due to the fact that it has the added bracing underneath the rear window that’s obviously not offered in a hatch. More body rigidity stands you in good stead if you’re driving on rough roads and these days you don’t need to be in the great Australian Outback to find harsh surfaces

because sadly there are plenty in the suburbs as well. However the Jetta usually runs a bit behind the Golf in its introduction and the recently updated VW sedan doesn’t share the brilliant new MQB platform of the Golf 7.
