Smiling through the pain barrier By CASEY NEILL

ASHLENE Strunz won’t let heart disease stop her from supporting her little sister Renee. Her condition leaves her short of breath but the Noble Park North 12-year-old has signed up for the three kilometre RunMelbourne kids’ event on Saturday 25 July. She’s raising money to help Arthritis and Osteoporosis Victoria to find a cure for juvenile arthritis and support suffers such as her seven-year-old sister. “I’ve seen how much pain she’s in some days,” Ashlene said. “She’s got a good case of arthri-
tis so I can’t imagine how much pain other people could be in. “I’m not a good runner!” Renee was suitably impressed with her sister’s sacrifice. “It made me feel like ‘woah’,” she said. Juvenile arthritis affects one in every 1000 children. Treatment can alleviate symptoms but there is no cure. Renee was diagnosed when she was 14 months old and suffers pain in her ankles, knees, elbows and fingers. “All of a sudden she just started walking and then she literally just stopped walking. She was screaming all day,” mum Melena said. “It took us a few months to try

and work out what her issue was.” The family attends juvenile arthritis camps each year. “You get to meet lots of other people who’ve got arthritis and you hear their stories,” Melena said. “On those weekends you see kids who can walk on the Friday and then by the end of the weekend are in so much pain they can’t function. “We’re just trying to do our bit and raise awareness for juvenile arthritis.” Renee benefits from meeting other kids who understand what she is going through. “It’s hard because my friends don’t know how much pain I get in,” she said.
Ashlene understands better than most how her body can hold her back. She had open heart surgery just shy of her fifth birthday. “She had some membrane growing in her aorta which we had to remove otherwise it would stop the flow of blood in the aorta,” Melena said. “Hers was a really simple surgery. There was so much worse that you could see in the hospital.” Ashlene will need surgery to replace the valve in about two years. “During the surgery, as they were sewing up her aorta, they noticed she had a hole in her heart and as they sewed that up it created some leaks,” Melena said.
“It’s something we monitor. “She’s pretty good, though, if she gets tired she’ll tell us but she is pretty active. “Out of breath is probably the worst thing.” Melena, her husband David, and Renee will complete the RunMelbourne kids’ course alongside Ashlene. “I’m pretty stoked. I think it’s special. I’m proud of them,” Melena said. “If one of them is sick they both try to help each other.” Visit tinyurl.com/ouayvnv to sponsor Ashlene.

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS HOMEBUYERS say they are thousands of dollars out of pocket due to building delays in the Sarah Lands housing estate in Keysborough. Roads, kerbs, footpaths and street lights have been built at the sold-out greenfield estate off Perry Road, but purchasers can’t build their homes until an impasse between the developer Galileo and Greater Dandenong Council is resolved. On an online forum, frustrated purchasers claim they were told by real estate agent KR Peters that their property would be ready for construction by March or April. The latest estimate, according to Galileo, is August. In the interim, purchasers have yet to receive land titles.
They have signed contracts with builders to start work in March and are now paying months of penalties to the builders. The dispute with Greater Dandenong is about who pays for a 1.3 hectares of public open space in the estate. Councillor Peter Brown said the council was seeking a binding financial agreement - either a contract or a bond - for Galileo to fund the open space works. “In the past, greenfield developments have gone under and we’re left with large areas of public open space - it’s then up to the council ratepayers to develop the area. “The council doesn’t want to be in the position of an unsecured creditor.”
Galileo chief executive Neil Werrett said the developer, having provided more than the requisite 5 per cent public open space, was owed “a credit” of money by the council. “Part of that reserve is land that the council have got to pay for.” He said the council wasn’t the main source of delays and that there had been hold-ups caused by utilities as well as clearing old agricultural piping from the site. “I don’t know what the agent told (purchasers) but we were hoping to get it done around now - by (the end of the) last financial year.” Meanwhile, Cr Brown said purchasers were the “meat in the sandwich” in the negotiations - having been given “false optimism” by the real estate agent.
“A large number of purchasers are feeling the strain.” KR Peters agent Janine ScottRule said she hadn’t seen “such an uproar” at a housing estate - though she’s known of some purchasers enduring delays of two years. She said it was initially predicted that titles would be available by March or April but “you should always leave a two or three month buffer”. “It’s not unusual there’s a couple of months of delays. “I’m always very clear when they’re signing a contract - I said to all of them I wouldn’t be signing with the builder until after Christmas (2014). “Some buyers got a little too excited and committed too early.”
Cause is close to their hearts By CASEY NEILL DANDENONG seniors have done their bit for Knitted Knockers. The charity provides free knitted or crocheted breast prostheses for women who’ve had mastectomies or other breast surgery. Wallara Seniors Group raised $400 for the cause at an annual fund-raising morning tea and last Wednesday 15 July presented a cheque to Knitted Knockers founder and president Cheryl Webster. Support coach Leanne Mclellan heard about Cheryl and approached one of her clients, Janet, who’d undergone a mastectomy. “She wasn’t interested in a traditional prosthesis and she loves to knit. It just went from there,” she said. “We had a fund-raising morning tea at a house where Janet lives, which is within Wallara. “Cheryl from Knitted Knockers was absolutely over the moon. “They do rely solely on donations.” Cheryl presented Janet and another resident with their own Knitted Knockers. “They have mild intellectual disabilities. They are very visual,” Leanne said. “Cheryl actually whipped hers out and showed them.” The group plans to raise money for Knitted Knockers again next year, but hopes to double the dollars.

Raid nets drugs and firearms SIX people from Greater Dandenong and Casey have been arrested after a massive drug and weapons bust in Noble Park North last week. Police raided the Galos Place property on Thursday where they seized two guns, a range of drugs, three stolen cars, more than $50,000 worth of stolen property and a large amount of cash. It’s believed the stolen property was taken during a burglary in Rosebud. The raid also uncovered car parts worth more than $100,000 that had allegedly been stolen in an industrial burglary last month and used to build a drag car. All the property has been returned to its owners. Those arrested were a 25-year-old man from Noble Park, a 30-year-old woman from Noble Park, a 32-year-old woman from Noble Park, a 31-year-old from Endeavour Hills, a 28-year-old from Berwick and a 24-year-old woman from Wheelers Hill and are due to face Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

WHAT’S IN A NAME DELVES INTO THE FASCINATING STORIES AND PERSONALITIES BEHIND SOME OF THE CITY’S BEST-KNOWN STREET NAMES. THIS WEEK THE JOURNAL LOOKS AT CENTRAL DANDENONG’S KIRKHAM ROAD, NAMED IN HONOUR OF EARLY SETTLER FRANK KIRKHAM.
Early carpenter was chip off the old block EDWARD Frank Kirkham arrived in Dandenong in the 1850s with his wife and three children. He was a ship’s carpenter by trade and turned his hand to houses and fencing and was heavily involved in building Dandenong’s first homes. He entered the employ of timber businessman JH Walker who at that time owned The Grange estate and other property. Mr Walker started a mill on Fanny’s Hill which was known later as Acacia Park and still later as the Dandenong Bacon Factory’s property. This was when he bought a block from the Collins family on Kirkham Road, subsequently named after him. There he built one of the earliest huts in the district. Mr Kirkham and William Blackmore erected a fence around the three acres at the corner of Langhorne and

A short time afterwards Mr Kirkham with John Collier built wooden structures that included officers’ quarters, a watch house, and a lean-to which was used as a stable. The first burial at Dandenong Community Cemetery - established on 20 acres on Kirkham Road in 1857 - is believed to have been an Aborigine who worked part-time for Mr Kirkham. Mr Kirkham (1829 to 1905) and family members are now also buried there alongside other Dandenong pioneers. Mr Kirkham was married to Mary Ann Dallimore (1826 to 1889) and they had three children before moving to Dandenong.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 20 July 1915 THE WAR What the Women can do The women of Australia have already done, and are doing, much splendid work in the war of raising war funds for various kinds and of supplying valuable equipment to our boys bound for the front. Now an even greater and harder task faces them - to assist in stimulating enlistment. Yet that is what every woman of Victoria who realises her true duty to State and Empire must do today, and do quickly and unflinchingly. While there are many who have
given their husbands and sons to the great cause, there are many who are either indifferent or who shrink from making the great sacrifice. Yet in this stupendous life or death struggle of the nations, women have even more to lose than men. If they have any doubts let them read even the most meagre records of the German invasion of Belgium at the expense of women and children. Would they keep their sons at home under pretence that it will be time enough to fight the German hordes when they reach Australia. Then will be too late. Great

Rail pothole anger By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS METRO Trains is making no comment on liability for car-jolting potholes caused by a crash between a truck and a train at Webster Street level crossing, Dandenong, last month. At a council meeting on Monday 13 July, Greater Dandenong councillor Jim Memeti said cars and tyres were at risk of damage from plunging into the 20-centimetre ditches created by the 19 June crash. Train services were suspended for more than four hours but noone was injured following the initial crash at the boom-gated crossing. Cr Memeti said though the tracks were swiftly repaired, road potholes remained nearly a month later. “You didn’t get a sighter of the potholes until you drove over them,” Cr Memeti said.
Jim Memeti inspects the tardily repaired Webster St level crossing Picture: GARY SISSONS on 15 July. 141810 The potholes were filled with bitumen on 14 July. “Why did it take them three
weeks to fix it?” Cr Memeti said. “If it wasn’t for (the council) telling them, it still wouldn’t be done.
“Even after the repairs, cars were still swerving because they think it hasn’t been repaired yet.” Cr Memeti said the repairs themselves were sub-standard and the fresh bitumen has been compressed by traffic and created “big bulges” in the road surface. On Friday Metro Trains spokeswoman Sammie Black said its investigations into infrastructure damage caused by the 19 June crash were ongoing. She did not comment on questions of liability for the potholes. “We regularly inspect the level crossing and carry out maintenance as required. “We most recently completed maintenance works at the level crossing on 14 July. “This weekend, we are carrying out further maintenance works at the crossing, which will include any reasphalting as required.”
Charges after bottle shop raid top-up POLICE say a Dandenong man who raided a Springvale liquor store returned to the same bottle shop just hours later where police were ready to pounce. Police said a 20-year-old entered the BWS at the Waltzing Matilda Hotel on Heatherton Road about 8.45pm on Sunday 12 July where he grabbed an employee by the shirt collar and demanded money. The raider then stole cash from the till and a safe while also taking two bottle of vodka and a bottle of Hennessy whiskey before fleeing. Police said that about 11pm the same man returned to the liquor store where employees recognised him and called police who soon arrived to arrest him. The arrest led to detectives executing a search warrant at a Springvale South property the next day and seizing stolen goods and clothing. The man has been remanded in custody and will appear at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court later this month.

Would-be lawyer escapes court conviction in Randwick Court, Noble Park, during a police pursuit in June 2014, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. In a white handbag on the car floor were found two syringes and two packages of cannabis – which she told police was self-medication for bipolar depression. She also made full admissions to stealing numberplates in Cranbourne West that year because she didn’t want her “male friend” to get pulled over by police.
Chicken Breast (SKIN ON)
In 2013 the woman accused a fellow Dandenong boarding house resident of stealing a male friend’s phone, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. She instructed her male friend to kick in the victim’s door, then she yelled and pushed the victim in the face. Police noted the accused’s lack of remorse at the time and her willingness to blame the victim’s “attitude” for her attack. Her defence lawyer told the court

that the accused had been in a problematic, violent and controlling relationship at the time. The partner led her into “the world of drugs” and caused her diagnosed posttraumatic stress disorder. The accused had “extracted” herself from her deviant state since the offending and was studying criminology in the hope of going onto law, the lawyer said. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said she
wouldn’t convict the accused, who was facing court for the first time. The offences were “effectively on record without conviction so you can pursue your life in law. “It seems you’ve turned your life around.” The accused was fined $2000. She next appears at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 5 August to contest another outstanding matter. - CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

Driver in jail appeal By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A DANDENONG North serial drink-driver has been refused appeal bail after being jailed for 10 months for multiple charges of failing to answer bail, driving unlicensed and refusing a breath-test. Police had taken the rare step of opposing bail after Kamil Farah lodged an appeal against the sentence handed down in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court earlier on Monday 13 July. The charges compiled over the past two years also included possessing 10 ecstasy tablets and making a false report of an armed robbery. According to a police summary, Farah’s car had veered to the wrong side of Cleeland Street and struck a stationary car at a Herbert Street roundabout in the late after-
noon of July 2013. Farah was described by police as argumentative, aggressive, unsteady on his feet, slurring his words and with glazed, bloodshot eyes. At the time, Farah was subjected to an eight-month suspended jail sentence and his four-year driving disqualification period had yet to expire. After twice refusing to take a breath test, Farah was arrested for public drunkenness and taken to Dandenong police station to sober up. About 10.30pm, after his release, Farah was intercepted by police as he drove his car from the crash scene. After several refusals, he gave a preliminary breath reading of 0.141. He then rejected requests to supply an evidentiary breath sample at
the police station. Police prosecutor First Constable Tess Davison said on Monday 13 July that if Farah was released, there was a risk to public safety and that he wouldn’t appear in court - especially with the threat of a jail term. Defence lawyer Cameron Baker said Farah was unlikely to drive while on bail since he didn’t own a vehicle. He said on the occasion Farah was caught for unlicensed driving of a friend’s car, the applicant had opted for the “lesser of two evils” given he was chauffeuring the car’s “severely intoxicated” owner. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell refused appeal bail, though noting it was rarely opposed by police and generally granted by magistrates’ courts. She said the combination of
thrice refusing a breath test, at least nine Road Safety Act offences as well as priors for unlicensed and disqualified driving made Farah a public safety risk. “On his behalf, it was said the risk would be mitigated by not owning a motor vehicle,” Ms O’Donnell said. “But against that, some of these offences are in other people’s motor vehicles.” She said Farah’s eight outstanding arrest warrants suggested he was an unacceptable risk of failing to appear in court. Ms O’Donnell was particularly concerned by Farah’s attempt to drive his car after refusing a breath test in July 2013. Farah was remanded in custody until his scheduled County Court appeal on 11 September.

New golf club objections hit boundary ares into four blocks, including a 74-hectare ‘Lot 4’ earmarked for the golf club. Its submission states that the new layout will provide an opportunity for “sustainable farming activities” and for a “broader range of agricultural activities... especially on proposed Lot 4”. Mr Shifman said the golf club would consult and seek approval for the course “at the appropriate time”. “The land is identified as farming land because the boundary realignment application form asks what the land is currently being used for. “It would be premature to mention a golf course until the necessary consultations have been held

and works approvals have been obtained.” Mr Ross said his group’s main objection was the golf club’s associated plan to carve its current green wedge golf course into a housing estate. “The council is probably going to bat away (the realignment objection) and say it’s just for agricultural purposes. “Once these things get legs, it makes them harder to stop.” Last month 85 per cent of voting members approved a deal with Intrapac to move to Pillars Road on condition that its current home at Springvale and Hutton roads was rezoned for residential development.
1135155-ACM21-14
A CONSERVATION group has lodged a formal objection against a proposed boundary realignment of land pitched as the future home of Keysborough Golf Club. Defenders of the South East Green Wedge argue that the 256356 Pillars Road site is unsuitable for a golf course due to being flood-prone, acid sulphate soils and conflict with Greater Dandenong’s planning scheme. Secretary Barry Ross said recontouring the land could lead to runoff to nearby properties and works could disturb acid sulphate soils that could acidify waterways. Developer Intrapac Projects -
which doesn’t own all of the land parcels - denies the land is floodprone. “The land was chosen because of its suitability for a golf course and it should also be noted that this land, unlike on the northern side of Pillars Road, is not subject to inundation,” chief operating officer Max Shifman said. “The club is well aware of the issues associated with acid sulphate soils and, as with all activities undertaken in areas where acid sulphate soils are present, the club will take all the necessary steps required to manage the issue.” It has not proposed golf course works as part of the application which is to re-subdivide 116.5 hect-

Shed mates By CASEY NEILL AN Australian-first facility helping men to find their place has reached another milestone. Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed held its first annual general meeting (AGM) on Tuesday 14 July. The shed opened on the Springvale Uniting Church site in February, more than five years after The Reverend Paul Creasey took the idea to the community. “Today is an affirmation of the initial vision from the Springvale Uniting Church, who responded to a need,” councillor and shed chairwoman Roz Blades said. “The inception of this shed has not been in isolation. “What we have today is the result of visionary thinking by
Paul Creasey and the committee of the Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed. The shed has hosted a Catch Up Cafe every Wednesday from 10am to noon, where about 10 men talk, listen and support each other over a hot cuppa. “Lunches are planned with our current shed users and partners to build friendships, an opportunity to think about nutrition and celebrate food from other cultures,” Cr Blades said. An art group runs each Thursday morning. “We are very fortunate to have forged a community relationship with the Springvale RSL who have been most supportive to this project,” Cr Blades said. “Their funds allowed us to purchase laptops, mah-jong sets, table tennis equipment and

supplies for the art group.” The RSL cash also funded the shed’s first community development worker Charlie “who we are sure will forge links into the local community”. A music group runs each Thursday and includes playing, learning, singing and listening. “We have entered into a partnership agreement with Springvale Neighbourhood House where they hire the shed for English classes for new migrants and asylum seekers,” Cr Blades said. “We hope that these men are able to join in with the shed activities when they are ready.” Mayor Sean O’Reilly said the shed was off to a “more than flourishing start”. “I look forward to seeing the men’s shed kicking more goals in the future,” he said.
Drive to stop parking meters “Once a clear decision is made, the earliest any sort of change can happen is three months - by which time (the meters) will be installed.” Cr Chea in turn threatened to withdraw electoral support for Cr O’Reilly - a previous running mate - in the 2016 council elections. “I told him already I won’t support any councillor that supports the parking meter fees,” Cr Chea said. Cr O’Reilly said that if the trial worked as well as the council hoped, the pro-meters councillors should get “credit for supporting a brave initiative“. “I’m aware of the (lobbying) pressure but the situation is the council is resolved to introduce (the trial).”
He said the trial - coupled with a new early-bird pricing for the underutilised multi-deck No.8 car park - aimed to fix Springvale’s traffic congestion and parking shortage. Car parking was up to 97 per cent full at times, with a third of traffic comprised of drivers circling for a parking spot. “When this improves, Springvale will grow as a shopping destination.” Cr Peter Brown has withdrawn his support for the trial and Cr Loi Truong told the Journal he had only supported the trial because it was backed by an overwhelming councillor majority. He said he fought for free drop-off zones as part of the trial. - CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

GREATER Dandenong councillor Youhorn Chea said he would try to launch a last-ditch rescission motion to halt an on-street parking meter trial in Springvale. Cr Chea will seek to introduce a second rescission motion on 27 July to scrap the 12-month $470,000 trial which is set to roll out as early as six weeks’ time. A previous rescission motion introduced by Cr Chea was defeated in April and the expenditure was then approved in June’s yearly budget. Mayor and Lightwood Ward colleague Sean O’Reilly, who supports the trial of the $1.20 hourly meters, raised doubts whether Cr Chea’s motion would be allowed.

VAL Michau, Gordon Sanders, Carol Osman, Amanda Anastasopoulos and Noel Ashdown could have been forgiven for thinking December had come early as a steady stream of toys filled Dandenong RSL last week. The National Servicemen’s Association of Australia’s (NSAA) south-east sub-branch co-ordinated the 11 July collection for the Salvation Army Toy Bank. Sub-branch president Mike Smith said the Salvos would distribute the secondhand and new toys to underprivileged kids at Christmas. He said some would otherwise go without and that the toy collection was the biggest in the drive’s 11 years. THERE were looks of surprise all round at Greater Dandenong’s council meeting on Monday when councillor Matthew Kirwan had not one question for council officers. Usually armed with stacks of questions and supplementary questions, the recentlymarried councillor apologetically announced he had just a brief fortnightly report. A colleague remarked: “Must have been a productive honeymoon.”

TALK did the rounds of an accused at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court who had more than one birthday. In fact, his reported dates of birth were six years apart. The 24-year-old - who may also be 30 gives a new meaning to man-child when considering his lengthy rap sheet. It begins with him appearing in court as an ’adult’ and later answering charges in the Children’s Court.
COURTS are certainly cracking down on family violence repeat-offenders. At Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, a man with a long history of breaching intervention orders - had seemingly taken another step too far. In January and February, he persistently called and texted his ex-partner as he languished in a remand centre - knowingly breaching an intervention order. The result - eight months in the slammer. A long time to learn a long-ignored lesson. Was there a poltergeist at work at Monday’s Greater Dandenong council meeting? The lights seemed to have a mind of their own, dimming several times during councillor debates. In an aside, one councillor asked if the council had paid its power bill. Dare we say council meetings can even put a room’s lighting to sleep.

SOCIALLY SPEAKING RE: South Africa Could Gain From Dandy South Pay Dispute Half details do not become fact. We guys are spending nights (protesting) in this freezing weather. We are discriminated, bullied at work. For our own annual leave we’ve been asked to disclose our personal reason in writing. Where is our privacy? We are not having fun here. James Bond, via web. Don’t forget who makes the profits and keeps all you bosses in a job at Aspen! Save Our Jobs, via web. It would be highly appreciated if the Aspen Dandenong management takes a pay cut and manages the
business efficiently to make the business profitable and sustainable instead of attacking the workers’ rights. James Camble, via web. The negotiations on the table is 3 per cent each year for the next three years. The redundancy is presently capped at 18 years. It is to be increased to 21 years. Regarding the 38 hours, any current employee that is on 36 hours has a “choice” of retaining the 36 hours for the duration of their employment with the company. When this person leaves the company, the new person that is coming in to replace the one that is leaving will be on 38 hours. Any current employee has the “choice” of
taking up the 38 hours and will be paid accordingly for giving up those hours. No one is being forced to take 38 hours - it is a personal “choice” to what suits their family and lifestyle. Please make note in the year 2017 at Ford, Toyota, Holden, Hella Australia, Ship Building Yard - all employees will be made redundant meaning there will be approximately 120,000 people unemployed people in Victoria. The employees at Aspen need to ask themselves “will I be leaving the company within the next five years?” and if so, where will they find a job? The company indicated that it will take up to 15 years for 50 per cent of the people to be on 38 hours.
Too many people in this world think that because they have a job with a company, the company is obligated to fend for them not ‘what can you do for the company’. Job Security, via web.
There is no such thing called job security in the present world. Where are you going to go after 2017? Your job will be at stake too! Aspen policy - Rob Peter to Pay Paul! Kumar Vyasa, via web.
Think this management guys are in 19th century. To Increase efficiency and productivity you guys have to spend money on training, tools and spares. This 36 and 38-hour two-tier work culture was introduced and the same kind of promises made by the company next door few years back. Step outside Aspen and see what’s happening there. Full-time workers are made redundant and they’re hiring casuals to fill the positions.
IT’S the sixth day of the strike and we are still on the line. Polar cold couldn’t break us. We are stronger than before. We are not going to give up until the company protects our conditions. The company is threatening us to lose work to South Africa. We are not scared to lose the work. We will live with pride until the end. Workers Right, via web. The strike is now over. DO NOT JUDGE BY THE COVER – if you do, you’ll miss out on one of the most fascinating, well planned and renovated homes in the area. It’s freshly revitalized for an easy living lifestyle. Beyond the elevated entry and porch, you will find solid timber floors throughout, three good size bedrooms with BIRs, a modern living with dining, open kitchen & a refreshed bathroom. Plus if you love to entertain, the undercover timber decked alfresco has plenty of room & overlooks the yard.
This well planned & good sized 3 BDR home has the potential to be anything your heart desires. It needs to be brought back to life with some modern touches, but it’s ready to be lived in whether you occupy it yourself or put in a tenant. Then you have the option to build at the rear with so much land on offer or perhaps you would rather demolish the block & use the 663m2 (approx) & build multiple townhouses on this residential growth area (formerly known as Zone 2 (all STCA).

SPICK AND SPAN FOR SUCCESSFUL SALE You’ve decided to sell, appointed an agent and your first open house is coming up. Your agent will be doing all he or she can to get suitable buyers through your front door but what they find when they get there is all-important. Here are five things all successful sellers have. Understand the buyer’s perspective: You love your home but potential buyers don’t have that emotional connection. During viewings they’re trying to imagine their future lifestyle rather than live your life. Pack away personal items and de-clutter your home to let its advantages shine. If your décor is outdated, perhaps enlist help to spruce it up. Realistic price expectations: Get quotes from a number of agents, but do your own research online on what else is for sale in your area. Putting a very high price on your home may scare buyers off - a realistic and market competitive price could result in a number of potential buyers vying to purchase. A pristine home for
opportunity to add or move rooms and design unique areas of the home design to create a home that meets their exact requirements. This company offers a personalised approach with a focus on creating a unique home for each buyer that works within their budget and gets the most out of their block of land. The Inspired Home Creator tool demonstrates how unique and hassle-free the Inspired Homes design process is. It all just clicks. Explore the design options with Inspired Homes at www.inspiredhomes.com.au/ home-builder. The Inspired Homes display is at 3-5 Serene Way, Clyde North on the Berwick Waters Estate. inspections: Everything needs to gleam and never underestimate the impact of a fresh coat of paint. The basic checklist: Clean kitchens and bathrooms, clothing and personal effects put away neatly in drawers and wardrobes, swept floors, beds made, tidy children’s rooms, no unpleasant odours from cooking, mould or cigarette smoke. If you have outdoor space, mow lawns and tidy the garden. When in doubt, get a friend to do a ‘test viewing’ for you. Finish DIY, don’t try to hide problems: Don’t think that buyers will overlook dripping taps or lack of doorknobs. Even the smallest problems will make buyers mark down offers and may lead them to suspect bigger issues are lurking, sight unseen. If your home is in need of repair it is also unlikely to attract a top price. Ask for agent feedback: How many people came to an open for inspection? What were their comments? Have they identified any stumbling blocks? If no one is attending the inspections, ask why.

Porsche carjack charges
FATHER and daughter Alan and Susan Collier made history at the Rotary Club of Dandenong’s changeover lunch. As new assistant governor, Alan had the honour of formally inducting Susan as the club’s new president at Waverley Golf Club in Rowville on Sunday 12 July. “We’re making history today,” he said. Outgoing president Ian Maxwell said Susan, 31, would do a great job and similar praise echoed around the room. “She’s adorable and smart,” one Rotarian exclaimed following Susan’s acceptance speech. MC Ken McDonald went a step further, asking “would you believe you have just heard from a future prime minister of Australia?” Susan is only the club’s second female president so members are still working on an appropriate title for her partner, Andrew. “He’s very excited about his new role as first lady,” she laughed. Susan said change was necessary for the club to remain relevant to the world it served. In the past 12 months it lost two members and gained none. “The key to attracting new members is projects,” she said. “I’d really like to see us engage with the community.” She plans to ask groups what support they need anded expose them to the values of Rotary first hand. The business community is also on Susan’s radar, alongside at-risk youth. She said the group could grow its asso-
TWO men and a teenager were arrested after a $150,000 Porsche was carjacked in Fitzroy and found in Hampton Park hours later. A Springvale man, 24, a Surrey Hills man, 22, and a 16-year-old boy from Keysborough were remanded by police. The arrests came after a white Mitsubishi was allegedly rammed into the back of the Porsche about 10.40pm on Saturday 11 July while the Porsche driver, a 44-year-old man form Bundoora, was stopped at traffic lights on Nicholson Street, North Fitzroy. When the victim got out of his car to take a photo of the damage he was confronted by a man who pulled out a gun and demanded his car keys. One of the attackers got into the driver’s seat of the Porsche while the other two got back in the Mitsubishi and the two cars drove off. At 4am the next morning, detectives found the Porsche in Karoonda Way, Hampton Park, and arrested three suspects.

She hopes to grow the Cinema under
the Stars event, which in its third year attracted 1500 guests to Tirhatuan Park in Dandenong North in March and made close to $7000 for the club. Rotary Club of Dandenong distributed more than $27,500 in donations throughout the past 12 months. Susan and Ian presented awards to members John and Nola Dawson, Alan Roberts and Don Thompson for going above and beyond to help each week.
“It’s not to say that every one of the Rotarians isn’t doing a fantastic job,” Susan said. She also announced the committee that would support her during the year ahead, including president-elect Davor Balder. “Thanks to this team that’s agreed to come with me on this ride for the next 12 months,” she said. “Let’s see what happens.”

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Striking workers end picket with a victory By CASEY NEILL DANDENONG South workers ended a 10-day picket line at pharmaceutical company Aspen on Friday - with a win. The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) and National Union of Workers (NUW) members on Friday voted on a new agreement that will secure their rostered days off (RDOs). Mechanical fitters and production workers at Aspen took protected stop work action at the Frankston-Dandenong Road site on Tuesday 7 July. Aspen responded by threatening to send jobs to South Africa and locking the workers out for 48 hours.
The picket line continued for another seven days until last week’s resolution and included a rally alongside workers from the neighbouring Nissan site on Saturday 11 July. Nissan will outsource its warehousing to CEVA Logistics, making about 40 jobs at the Frankston-Dandenong Road site redundant. An Aspen spokesperson said its proposal was for workers to voluntarily convert their roster to an average 38-hour week with 12 rostered days off (RDOs) instead of their current 36-hour week with 24 RDOs. They would receive a higher hourly rate in exchange.
Workers instead maintained their RDOs and won a wage increase and an offer for casual workers to become permanent full-time employees. AMWU organiser Toby Paterson said this was a terrific win for the workers “who have maintained their conditions and not backed down to threats to their jobs in a long, hard battle”. AMWU delegate Bernie Lacey, who has worked at Aspen for 15 years, said workers were united in their struggle to maintain their conditions at work, including RDOs that they used to care for children, grandchildren and elderly parents. “It’s not even about the pay,” he said.
“We work hard at Aspen and hit all their targets. “This is about the conditions that we have fought for and won over a long time. “We weren’t going to give them up without a fight!“ Mr Paterson said Nissan workers held the rally and barbecue on Saturday 11 July “to send a message to the company that they were very disappointed with the outcome”. “Hopefully there’ll be a positive outcome. “Maybe some of the workers will be redeployed into the casting plant across the road,” he said.
Saintly touch brings soul to linen service By CASEY NEILL THE patron saint of immigrants inspires and shapes Dandenong South’s Cabrini Linen Service (CLS). The commercial laundry’s efforts to support the community were rewarded on 1 July with the Victoria Day Award for Public and Community Service by a Good Corporate Citizen. Not-for-profit Cabrini Health opened the CLS ECO Laundry in November 2013. CLS general manager Kevin Duong said it selected the Logis Boulevard site because of the area’s high unemployment, particularly among new migrants. “When we started our search for a new home, we had two important and vital objectives,” he said. “The first is to find a sustainable site that will allow us to achieve our environmental sustainability projects. “The second was to continue our founder Mother Cabrini’s mission and values. “Dandenong has provided us with a wealth of opportunities to give back to the community in terms of supporting the local community and newly arrived Australians. “It has allowed us to provide them with the tools and support to once again take control of their futures. “Mother Cabrini had such compassion and determination as the patron saint of immigrants. “To be able to fulfil her vision is a core value of CLS and a significant part of what we do here

CLS workers Francisco Da Costa Vougue, Carlos Nario, Ceta Orbiz, Elizabeth Jenkins and Kenny Ou. 141393 on a day to day basis.” Mr Duong himself comes from a refugee background. “Personally, working at Cabrini has been fulfilling as it has given me the unique ability to reflect on my journey and return the benefits that have been afforded to me to someone less fortunate, so that they too can have the opportunity to pave their own future,” he said. Mr Duong said CLS also supported the Lighthouse Foundation, Project Respect, Street
Kids and WISE Employment. It retires damaged linen to Sacred Heart Mission and provides a nocharge linen service to Sacred Heart Mission and Very Special Kids in Malvern. “This award has been very humbling for Cabrini Linen Service,” Mr Duong said. “Although we did not begin this journey with being award recipients in mind, it is an amazing thing for our staff to be recognised for all the work they have put in over the years, par-
ticularly since our transition to Dandenong. “They have been instrumental in embracing all our mission projects and have wholeheartedly provided support to those in need. “From their perspective, it is fulfilling and rewarding to help someone in a position they were similarly in. “It is also great for our partnership programs and our clients who have over the years greatly contributed to our cause.” Mr Duong said CLS recently
partnered with business network provider SEBN through the City of Greater Dandenong. “We will continue to become more embedded in the community and find opportunities to give back to a community that has welcomed us into their fold,” he said. “Here at CLS, we believe greatly that success is driven with social good and that each and every one of us have an obligation to bring this value to realisation.”
Business hits back at Easter and footy public holiday plan OPPONENTS against two new public holidays say the proposal could hurt small businesses in Greater Dandenong. Last Wednesday the State Government released an independent analysis that showed Easter Sunday and Grand Final Friday days off would deliver as much as $312 million in benefit to the Victorian economy, but would also cost the economy $405 million.
The proposal is now out for public comment for 28 days. Dandenong Retail Traders Association (DRTA) chairwoman Glenys Cooper said her personal reaction was that Victorian already had sufficient public holidays. “I’m not quite sure why we need to have more,” she said. “It puts more strain on small business. “Some businesses
might decide that it’s not worth opening.” Greater Dandenong councillor Peter Brown said the cost for the public holidays was too high and called on the council to prepare an urgent submission opposing the scheme. “My personal view is that the Victorian economy cannot afford such a holiday and the economic impacts on Greater Dandenong businesses are unaffordable and unjustified,”
he said. “To close Victoria down on a Friday for a football procession for a match the following day is a waste. “I am confident that council, representing as it does not just homeowners but employers, is the best vehicle to provide a co-ordinated response on behalf of our business ratepayers.” Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI)
chief executive Mark Stone said additional wages for the retail, accommodation, food services and recreation industries could cost small business owners about $105 million for the two holidays, as wages could be 50 per cent higher on Easter Sunday and 150 per cent higher on Grand Final Friday. “What Victoria needs is more jobs and this plan is only going to set that back,” he said.
Acting Small Business Minister Gavin Jennings said introducing the Easter Sunday holiday would ensure those who needed to work over the Easter weekend were paid fairly. He said other benefits included tourism and hospitality boosts. Will your business be impacted? Email journal@ starnewsgroup.com.au or visit www.facebook.com/ DandenongJournal.
Plenty to say about thriving KATE Weiss has made the journey from surviving to thriving and is sharing her secrets in Springvale. The Table of Plenty founder will be the keynote speaker at SEBN’s Showcasing Women breakfast at Highways, from 7am to 9am on Friday 24 July. A search for innovative food solutions following the birth of her daughter with a disability led Ms Weiss to start Table of Plenty in 2006. Major supermarkets now stock 18 of her products and the company now has a turnover close to $10 million – and a vision to double that in the next two years. Ms Weiss won the 2014 Telstra National Business Woman of the Year title, provides work for people with disabilities and wants to inspire a move towards a healthy and authentic way of living. The event is $55 per person or $500 for a table of 10. RSVP by Monday 20 July to sebn@cgd.vic.gov. au or PO Box 200, Dandenong 3175.
Giving to do good THE Good Guys throughout the south east are celebrating a donation milestone with more cash for the community. Director of the Drum Theatre Greg Hordacre said Dandenong’s theatrical hub was constantly approached by performers, musical theatre companies, dance companies and local cultural groups alike. “Dandenong is a really rich area when it comes to artists - we often have popular and current performers put on shows here that grew up in the area,” Mr Hordacre said. With up to 30 shows a year, the Drum Theatre is often programmed with the community in mind. “We’ve got a strong support base from our elderly community and they like to come to the theatre during the day so we make sure we have quality musical matinee performances for them, along with family and children’s shows,” he said. who are performing here this weekend, Opera Australia and Bangarra Dance Theatre Company but also local school shows and cultural groups that are unique to Dandenong,” he explained. Mr Hordacre says the local performing groups he’s dealt with often have specific ideas about what they want to do and his team looks at ways to assist them. “We make sure there is always space for good quality performances for all ages and room for local groups at affordable rates,” he said. The Drum Theatre will celebrate its 10th anniversary next year and Mr Hordacre assured audiences would be in for a jam-packed year of great shows. “We are a reflection of our community and just through the different performances we can offer we make sure we are responsive to the diversity that’s around Dandenong and I think that’s what makes the Drum Theatre so unique.”

Mayor shares his forward vision with Pacific forum By CASEY NEILL GREATER Dandenong needs to lock in and share a strong vision for the years ahead, according to Mayor Sean O’Reilly. Cr O’Reilly joined civic and business leaders from more than 100 cities at the Asia Pacific Cities Summit and Mayors’ Forum in Brisbane from 5 to 8 July. “It was a really forward-thinking conference,” he said. “Other conferences can focus on the problems we’ve got now.” Speakers included London Olympic and Paralympic Games organising committee chairman Lord Sebastian Coe. “He was talking about how when the vision is communicated to every-
body - and that includes the residents, our businesses in the City of Greater Dandenong and worldwide - then noone’s unclear on what the direction is and everybody can contribute towards it,” Cr O’Reilly said. “Some local councils might be reluctant to say too much about longterm plans, because long-term plans can change and then some residents might be disappointed. “But it’s much better to communicate long-term plans to residents so everyone can understand where we want to get to. “A plan can change over time but with no plan there’s no real direction. “With no plan we’re just responding to problems on the spot.” Cr O’Reilly met with about 75 mayors from across the Asia Pacific,
ranging from cities of three million to tiny regional towns. “Every new person I spoke to had something different to say and a different perspective,” he said. He spoke to a delegate from Parramatta in New South Wales. “It’s establishing itself as a second CBD in NSW,” he said. “That is what Dandenong is establishing itself as - an alternate CBD to Melbourne’s CBD. “We need to continue to advocate for transport connections and for the business services that make it attractive for businesses rather than go to Melbourne. “It’s more cost-effective and makes sense for them to come to Dandenong.” Cr O’Reilly said there were quite a few presentations on technology.
“We’ve got a lower technology literacy rate than other municipal areas,” he said. “We want to have programs that don’t leave residents behind who aren’t on the internet. “But also the trend is that a lot of people’s first computer is a mobile phone, so how does the council get more of its information out through mobile devices? “We also had a presentation on 3D printing. “This is going to be a huge manufacturing trend over the next five years. “While it won’t be cost-effective to mass produce using 3D printing, any parts that need to be customised with a low-production volume will be done using 3D printing technology. “It’s not just plastic, you’re also seeing metals being used.
“You don’t have to worry about how to create moulds, how to fit the items together ... you just basically print whatever you need.” Cr O’Reilly also heard about new ways to communicate information to residents. “For example, our council could provide detailed technology map on parking spaces and then residents could use that when they’re planning trips,” he said. “You can foresee not too far away that you’ll actually have parking maps that are real-time, that will actually show you which parking spaces are occupied and which aren’t. “You can use your application and your application will tell you where to drive to get a parking space that is unoccupied.”
College looks up with aerial photo By GEORGIA WESTGARTH ALMOST shut down for good in 2011, Cornish College has been looking forward to this day for more than three years. Taking just half an hour to get into formation and be snapped from 125 metres above ground - 620 Cornish College students, parents and staff members formed up onto the oval for the momentous occasion. Assistant principal Nicola Forrest said the aerial photograph was phenomenal for the college. “This was a school that was proposed to be shut down by St Leonard’s College and here we are four years later booming. “This photo is physical evidence of our growth and what we’ve achieved,” Ms Forrest said. The school opened in 2012 with 200 students and Ms Forrest said it would have struggled to pose for a photo of this grandeur in the past. “We currently have 540 students and we thought it was time to do a historic photo,” she said. The image was captured with a multicopter drone courtesy of the Melbourne Radio Controlled Helicopter Club which has shared the school campus since 1987. Treasurer of the club Roger Chapman said it was the first time he had used such expensive and exciting equipment to take a photo. “It was a very rewarding experience and great to see the school happy with the results,” Mr Chapman said. Long-term member of the club Mr Chapman said he didn’t want anything to go wrong and

The aerial photo of the students took just half an hour to set up and take using a multicopter drone. Picture: Melbourne Radio Controlled Helicopter Club
employed the help of Craig Cahill from XM2 Aerial Photography who flew the drone while Mr Chapman took the photo. “We parked the ute at the edge of oval and set up the electronic equipment and I used what looked like an iPad to watch when to take the photos,”
he said. Mr Cahill used a remote control and inbuilt GPS system to fly the drone to the right location. “Once you fly it up to the best position and put the brakes on, it will hold that position until you give it more instructions - it’s very spooky to watch, it just
sits there in the sky as if there’s wires holding it up,” Mr Chapman said. The colourful image includes the school’s rings of sustainability. Ms Forrest said the rings were created by the school more than 10 years ago as a thinking dispo-
sition to help educate students on a sustainable future. “The four rings are interlocking because when there’s an impact in one area it impacts other areas as well,” she said. The sentimental photo will be blown up and hung in the college’s office foyer.
Gift of affordable housing brings harmony to the village AT LEAST 20 vulnerable over-55s will soon move into affordable co-operative housing in Dandenong. Common Equity Housing (CEHL) will receive $2.7 million for its Harmony Village Dandenong through the Victorian Property Fund. The trust’s income is from real estate agent and conveyancer licence fees
and fines, interest on their trust accounts and investment income. CEHL managing director Stephen Nash said the organisation developed 92 apartments on the site in 2012 in partnership with a retirement village operator. It’s operated a housing co-operative for people over 55 years of age in 60 apartments since 2012,
and an additional six apartments from 2014. “Of the remaining 26 retirement village units, only six were ever occupied,” Mr Nash said. “This funding has allowed these vacant quality apartments to be purchased and provided as permanent, affordable, rental, co-operative housing where people have opportunities to participate in
the management of their housing. “This funding will have a direct and positive impact on some of our most vulnerable people in the community and will provide them a safe and secure place to call home. “Housing co-operatives provide real opportunities for people to have a say in decisions about their
housing and shared spaces, which in turn creates a great community with a sense of ownership and pride among people who live there.” Mr Nash said there was strong demand in the Dandenong region for high-quality residential accommodation suitable for older members of the community. “On our referral list
alone we have been able to identify and refer over 75 people to be assessed for the vacancies,” he said. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the State Government-approved funding would “provide a significant boost to the supply of local affordable housing units in Dandenong for older residents or people with a disability”.
Chilean top-up cash A LATIN American festival has won a $3000 one-off boost on top of its Greater Dandenong Council sponsorship grant allocated last month. At Monday’s council meeting, councillors approved the extra funding for this year’s Chilean Latin American September Festival. The festival was allocated $12,000 out of the $132,550 Sponsorships Program and Community Support Grants Program in June. The motion’s proponent, councillor Maria Sampey, argued that the festival was entitled to $15,000 - the same level as allocated to the Tet festival. It would also help the festival’s organiser, the Latin American Friendship Fonda la Clinica of Victoria, to meet steeply-rising hiring costs of $60,000 at Sandown Racecourse. Cr Sampey said the festival catered for people from 13 countries and was more popular than the Dandenong Show - which received $20,000 from the sponsorship program. “I know it’s only a paltry little amount I’m asking,” Cr Sampey said. “What I’m trying to show is sometimes there’s inconsistencies in the way grant funding is awarded.” In support, Cr Jim Memeti said he didn’t want Greater Dandenong to lose the “fantastic event”, one of the “biggest on our calendar”. Cr John Kelly, one of three opposing councillors, said the funding boost would be unfair to other grant applicants. “Council has set a criteria for grants. If we wanted to change that we should have a look at the criteria.“ He noted that councillors had an opportunity to “put their input” at a briefing session before the program’s release.

West takes beachhead By JARROD POTTER CHALK up one more School Sport Victoria (SSV) Premier Football final for the ages. Continuing a storied rivalry in SSV football circles, the south-east’s premier public schoolboys’ side Hallam Senior College locked horns with the west’s best - Essendon Keilor College - once again. With the MCG unavailable this year - the schoolboys’ grand final was played at Sandringham’s Trevor Barker Beach Reserve and its seaside location set the perfect backdrop for a match that ebbed and flowed like the bay tides. Missing likely AFL draftee Bailey Rice (groin), Hallam went in with determination aplenty to make up its under-age and under-sized roster. Hallam failed to fire in the first term - letting the western force take the upper hand as only Gippsland Power TAC Cup live wire Jai Rout managed to muster any great forward initiative. Kyle Hendy would boot the only major for Hallam in the first term and the coach rightly demanded more intensity and to up their tempo at the first address. It would take until the second half for Manny Peresso’s words to take effect as Hallam’s second
quarter didn’t match up with its true capabilities as the south-easterners trailed by 25 at the main break. Running back out after half-time, Hallam executed a full 180 - shifting its poor running and inability to match strength with Essendon Keilor in the packs and flipped it on its head. The third term was a blur of red, blue and white as Hallam surged on the back of some impressive work from Mutimer and Jarryd Trait in the midfield, along with Jordan Stewart, Phil Raso and Rout. Caleb Millman found himself up forward and made the most of the rare opportunity as the Noble Park/Dandenong Stingrays’ defender created a goal out of nothing - hunting down an Essendon opponent who was rendered holding the ball then slotting the massive goal to put Hallam 14 points ahead at the final break. But the third term was about all Hallam had left in them as Essendon Keilor surged to the front in the final quarter. TAC Cup listed dynamo Hisham Kerbatieh was sensational for the opponents as he charged through the midfield and also created plenty of opportunity when switched forward late in the game. His contested mark and the ensuing goal put
Jai Rout backs into the pack to take a superb grab. 141858 Essendon Keilor back in front with two minutes remaining and the top-ranked SSV side held their mantle and clamped down on the ball to take another win on the state stage. “We took a long time to settle and that first quarter is what really hurt us,” Peresso said. “I don’t think we ran out of legs, it was just nerves and dealing with pressure. “This was the first time we’ve really been tested over the course of the season, so the boys took a bit to respond to that, but I’m proud with how they fought back in that third quarter.” Peresoo praised midfield efforts of Mutimer awarded Hallam’s best-on-ground medal - as he

VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET
Kim’s career is... on cue In with the ‘ins’ crowd By DAVID NAGEL
By JARROD POTTER IF YOU can’t join ‘em… beat them. Dandenong Cricket Club’s Victorian Premier Cricket fixture was released on Tuesday and it confirmed a heated match-up will be first on the agenda - Dandenong versus Kingston Hawthorn. The newly formed side, merged from the Kingston Saints in VSDCA and the former Hawthorn-Monash University Premier team, is the result of Hawthorn walking away from a proposed merger with Dandenong at the 11th hour. With the failed merger between Dandenong and Hawthorn Monash University still fresh with many Premier cricketers, it will be a fiery way for the Panthers to begin the season. Dandenong coach Ross Woodall said the group wasn’t too concerned with what could have been with the merger and was just looking forward to whoever faces off against them each week. “Probably haven’t thought about it too much to be honest,” Woodall said. “We just want to prepare for that first game as well as we possibly can - whether the first game is against Kingston or anyone else, we want to be in the best position to take the points. “There may be a bit more feeling to it, but since it’s a game of cricket we just have to make sure by the end of that weekend we have the four points in the bank and we’re starting the season the way we want to.” Dandy depth has been replenished through the local ranks as a number of juniors look set to fill out the second and third sides heading into the season, but the big ins should place Dandenong’s 1st XI well for a tilt at Victoria Premier Cricket finals after a two-season absence. That ‘ins’ list is headed by Greenvale’s Alex Kerr - bringing his batting nuance to a local Premier club - alongside Prahran all-rounder Michael Nyary and the biggest Dandenong in - Darren Pattinson. Pattinson returns from a year in the DDCA at Doveton and the former skipper and premiership player will add depth and a bit of edge to the younger bowling and battling ranks. “It’s critical that our first grade team gets back to a position to play finals - we haven’t been able
Tom Donnell is set to captain Dandenong in the 2015/16 Victorian Premier Cricket Picture: JARROD POTTER season. 131283 to do that recently - and landing Darren Pattinson is a massive in for us, in what he brings to us on game day and also his leadership.” Leaving the group from the 1st XI are Nathan Lambden (Casey-South Melbourne), Matt Willcocks (Northcote) and the skipper Dan Doran - who has returned to the Gold Coast for work reasons. Woodall said the club was tossing up whether an import spinner would be brought in for the season, otherwise the duties would fall to the eager hands of young tandem Tanner Stanton and Jack Worrell. Tom Donnell will skipper the new-look side, with vice-captain James Nanopoulos, in its first outing on Sunday 4 October, at Shepley Oval.
AS A young girl growing up, Kim Ivett never imagined that wearing white-cotton gloves would be her ticket to the world stage. The Hallam schoolgirl was into everything as a kid, athletics, tennis, basketball, netball, swimming, and even cricket but it’s been the sport of snooker that has taken her to faraway places and provided her with the greatest experiences of her life. Inspired by her dad, John, Kim set out on a journey in 2007 to become a qualified snooker referee. Well, it’s fair to say, the journey has been a success, with Kim ticking off the latest in a long-list of achievements by officiating at the Australian Goldfields Open, held in Bendigo earlier this month. So how did this journey begin? “Dad’s been refereeing for more than 30 years, and I just followed him around at the start and I really enjoyed the environment,” Kim said. Kim didn’t have to look too far for advice, with John one of the most experienced and respected officiators of the game in the country. But he is also an examiner, and was the first person to assess his daughter for her ascension to a Class-3 referee in April 2008. “I was so nervous, because Dad was one of the examiners and quite strict, with me being his daughter,” Kim, currently the only qualified female snooker and billiards referee in Victoria, said.
Kim and John Ivett, side by side at the IBSF World Championships in India. 141804 Picture: CONTRIBUTED “The atmosphere of a big final is amazing, the adrenalin flows… there’s a huge sense of achievement at the end,” and Kim would know, having taken charge of the final match in some of the biggest tournaments in the land. She has been to Sydney for the Australia Open Snooker, to Adelaide, Albury, and has major finals like the City of Melbourne and Australian Nationals under her belt. But it’s her overseas travels, which started with the Oceania Championships in Auckland in 2011, which has seen her rise to prominence in the world of snooker. In November 2013, she officiated at her first professional world snooker event in the Belgium city of Antwerp, alongside world bests Olivier Marteel and Jan Verhaas. On that
trip, Kim refereed the final of the European Amateur Championships, being introduced into the arena alongside great names of the sport like Ronnie O’Sullivan and current world number-one Mark Selby. In May Kim refereed at the coveted Q-School in the UK, where she was assessed for her performances in a tournament where some of brightest young players in the world battle for their tour-cards. But the real highlight for both John and Kim came in November last year in India, when they became the first father and daughter combination to referee at the IBSF World Championships. “My career has spanned many years, but clearly the highlight was working together with Kim at those world championships,” John said.

King falls but battle is won By JARROD POTTER SFL DIVISION 2 - Round 13 TIME will tell if Keysborough can afford the collateral cost of its 34-point win over Caulfield. The Burra will be sweating on the diagnosis for star forward Tyson King - who was stretchered from the ground in the first term with a suspected, serious knee injury. Keysborough had to rearrange the decks to cover for King’s loss and to their credit, the next rung of Burra boys stepped up to fill the massive forward void. The visitors had no such issues as they managed to storm the Burra defence and take a two point advantage into the main break. There was a bit of niggle in the contest as
Keysborough and Caulfield exchanged blows, but the tables started to turn through the second half as Keysy found its way along all lines. It was set up by a scintillating five-goal third term - led by Davor Rajic (3 goals), who became the go-to forward who relished the challenge alongside the coach Ryan Goodes (3 goals) which pushed the Bears to the brink. Opening their wings and spreading out to feast on possession, the Burra shone in the final term. “We lost Tys (King) - the initial shock of losing him affected us a bit, but once we realised other players have to stand up in his absence, we started coming good,” Goodes said. “Our intensity picked up a little bit and we started to work harder.” The coach praised Scott Chamberlain, Danny Daniel Morland got his skates on to get this kick away under pressure from a Caulfield Pictures: JARROD POTTER opponent. 141949

Morland, Shane Dunn and Glen Hawthorn as well as an all-round performance from the younger faces in the group. “We went in with a young team - and it was a good chance for the rest of us to step up,” Goodes said. “Caulfield were really good today I thought so full credit to them - they came at us and we knew their season was on the line, but I think our boys bounced back and played really well.” Keysborough has a stranglehold on second place in the SFL Division 2 ranks - sitting twogames clear of Skye and Murrumbeena - and a win on the weekend against the Bombers keeps the possibility of a minor premiership alive in Keysy’s first season in the competition. In a cross-town showdown, Doveton Eagles took the points away from Springvale Districts in an eight-point race to the finish. The Demons fought back in the final term - booting five goals to one - but the Eagles’ handy lead at the final break kept the advantage with the Power Reserve lads. Cameron Ross and Trent Day (3 goals) were best on for the Eagles while Lachlan Morrey (5 goals) and Ben Laier stood out for Districts.
SFL DIVISION 3 - Round 14 SANDOWN claimed its win of the year, coming from behind to down Ashwood in a six-point nailbiter. New faces helped the Cobras strike as Luke Newton (2 goals) and Owen Uaongo excelled while familiar forward Ciaron O’Shaughnessy (3 goals) worked well at home. Endeavour Hills’ hopes of finals glory were dented by Carrum Patterson Lakes as the home side took a one-point triumph over a gutted Falcons’ attack led by Cedric LeGrand (3 goals), Shane Peake (2 goals) and Byron Hoe. Lyndale was knocked over by heavyweight Mt Waverley to the tune of 28 points, despite the gutsy efforts of Veton Rexha, Brian Grundy and Alex Kerr. Matt Neve (7 goals) proved exceptional for Hallam, but the rest of the Hawks didn’t soar as high as the fleet-footed midfielder’s bag wasn’t enough to get the home side across the line against Moorabbin. Dandenong was knocked over by South Yarra in another heartbreaker for the Redlegs, after squandering a three-quarter-time lead.
VICTORIAN AMATEUR FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION Division 2 - Round 13
St John’s continue to make mistakes By JARROD POTTER AN UP-AND-DOWN performance wasn’t enough for the JOCs to book their 11th win of the season. Old Paradians had to toil to take the points - fighting their way back into the clash after St John’s opened fire with a three-goal first term. Tim Edwards (2 goals) and Aaron Thornton (1 goal) held up the forward line, but the usual spark from Thornton was absent as the mercurial forward couldn’t replicate the form that has earned him 54 goals this season. Rhys Dyker and Liam O’Connor locked down a couple of Old Paradians’ best and brightest - excelling in the challenge set for them. The bookends stood out for St John’s as it matched its first-term intensity in the last after two absentee quarters through the middle of the match - letting the home side boot eight goals without much response. Roaring back into it through the final term, St John’s kicked twogoals-four and will rue the missed opportunities in the dying stages as the visitors had all the possession and should have mounted a better case for victory. “One of those ones that you could have, would have, should have… but it didn’t work out that way,” St John’s coach Ben McGee said. “Had a bit of a lapse through the second and third quarter and they
Manny Jakwot - pictured playing earlier this season - excelled through the midfield for St John’s in a Picture: JARROD POTTER six-point loss to Old Paradians. 141069 carried that momentum through the rest of the game. “What was pleasing was that we came back hard in the last quarter if it had gone for another minute I reckon we could’ve drawn it.” McGee thought Manny Jakwot excelled through the midfield and the efforts of Gerald Ennis and Edwards
were also highly commendable. The JOCs have faltered over the last month or so - winning twofrom-five and slipping two-games behind Ivanhoe AFC at the top of the table. St John’s holds its past player’s day and 10-year premiership reunion on Saturday at its home clash
against Eltham Collegians - another big test for the JOCs en route to the Division-2 finals. For more information on the reunion, contact the club via its Facebook page “St Johns Old Collegians Football Club”. Masala had a bye over the weekend as the Tigers now begin the run home this weekend against Point Cook AFC.

By JARROD POTTER NPL1 EAST - Round 21 DANDENONG City will rue what could have been as a win slipped away in the growing shadows. Dandenong City dictated the tempo all afternoon against FC Bulleen Lions - with Chris Antoniadis slotting the opener in the 17th minute. That would be the highlight of a frustrating day for City as the next hour was spattered with missed chances, defensive scrambles and a lack of cohesion across the lines. Despite the best efforts of their faster footballers Sean Seavill, Keegan Ziada and Antoniados up front, City’s peppering of the Lions’ goal didn’t amount to anything tangible as chance after chance was squandered to put the result beyond doubt. Goalkeeper Damir Salcin made a few heroic saves as the Lions roared into life for the last 15 minutes in particular, but couldn’t keep out the last. Will Abbott weaved his way easily through the City defence, forcing Salcin to come out from goals to attack, but he was bypassed by the Lion, who smashed home the equaliser to save face for Bulleen and take the solitary point. City coach Aaron Healey thought that 10 minute lapse at the death was not indicative of his side’s resolve. “Against a team who is top of

the table in the other league (NPL1 West), I thought we were the better team and probably could’ve got the three points if we did the job for 90 minutes,” Healey said. “I thought we were the better team for 80-85 minutes and what happens when you’re 1-nil up is they throw numbers forward and try to get an equaliser.” Healey praised the efforts on and off the park from new recruit Antoniados - who drives from Epping to Endeavour Hills and back every training - and also thought it was pleasing to get Dario Matkovic and Seavill running around once more. City sits sixth in NPL1 East and faces Box Hill United this weekend for a chance to spring up the ladder. Springvale White Eagles were defeated 1-2 by Brunswick City.
NPL - Round 22 THE road ahead is paved with difficulty for Dandenong Thunder if it hopes to stay in the Victorian top flight. Not even the slippery conditions on Friday night could aid the Thunder halting Avondale FC’s charge as the visitors slammed on three goals to all but seal Dandenong’s relegation fate. Things only got worse for Dandenong as Fitim Ibrahimi was redcarded for a careless tackle and sent

Avondale capitalised to bank another goal and register Dandenong’s eighth loss on the trot. Sitting last place on 11 points, Dandenong Thunder needs at least
four points and results to fall their way to stay in the top flight next season. Its final four matches - potentially in the NPL - will start this weekend when the Thunder faces Northcote City away on Saturday afternoon.

SEABL - Round 14 EMPHATICALLY brushing aside Nunawading, two Dandy victories have set up a strong run towards the SEABL finals. Dandenong men showed no mercy towards the Spectres, ghoulishly haunting the ring to outscore Nunawading 114-85. Splitting the minutes - and subsequently a bucket load of points - Chuck Long (22 points), Andrew Harms (21 points) and Daequon Montreal (15 points, 11 rebounds) led the charge to keep Dandenong right in the hunt near the top of the SEABL East Conference. Larissa Anderson’s women’s side was just as devastating - hitting their straps to claim a 90-67 triumph over the Spectres. Not even the absence of three starters - Jacinta Kennedy, Amelia Todhunter and Aimie Clydesdale - can halt the Rangers’ march towards finals. Led by Clare Papavs (21 points,
10 rebounds) - who is in All Star form this season - in tandem with gutsy performances from Dandenong faithful Faith Probst (15 points, 8 rebounds) and Alison Downie (12 points, 9 rebounds), the Rangers soared past the Spectres in an effort you’d have to see to believe. Young point guard Bree Whatman (16 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists) showed she can step up to the standard and excel, taking to starter’s duties with aplomb. Both Rangers’ sides travel to face Geelong on Saturday night.
BIG V Division 2 - Round 17 THE march towards finals continued in earnest for Keysborough as Nathan Vogt’s men took a scintillating 90-63 win over Maccabi. A 28-12 final term left no question as to the Cougars’ intent as David Smith (27 points, 11 rebounds) had a monster outing in league with Malcolm Heard (12 points, 5 rebounds) in a roster-wide starring effort. Keysborough can still claim second in the division with a win
Emily Rider put in one of her best efforts for the season but sadly to no avail as Keysborough lost by 10 points to Blackburn. 141951 Picture: JARROD POTTER over Coburg on Saturday and a Craigieburn loss to North East. Meanwhile Keysborough women will end their second BIG V season on the road against Coburg on Saturday night after a gallant 53-63 performance against Black-
burn. After leading through the first half, the Vikings charged over the top of the Cougars, despite the best efforts of Emily Rider (16 points, 7 rebounds) - who stayed on court for the full 40 - and Billie Lucas (15 points, 11 rebounds).
