Mr Abazi said he could quickly drill down to a young person’s issue. “I try to hold them here for as long as I can. We tire them out so they end up just going home.

JEMAL Abazi, as a man who has kept hundreds of young people on track, doesn’t ask for much. His Albanian Eagles Youth Centre in Dandenong South has cost about $700,000 to run over the past four years but received “not a cent” of government money. It has been propped by family, friends but chiefly by Mr Abazi himself. His motivation is simple – look at each child as if they are your own. “The more that come here, the more that you keep off the streets,” is his simple philosophy. But he fears after 18 months of being “led on” by Greater Dandenong Council officers, the council is about to derail his plans to move to bigger headquarters, in a warehouse about 100 metres from the centre’s present site at 11 Bryants Road. During that time, the successful manufacturer said he has paid $140,000 in rent for the idle proposed site. Tonight (Monday 27 July) Greater Dandenong councillors are set to decide on whether to approve the proposal. Officers have recommended the move be refused because of concerns about a lack of parking and excessive of noise for surrounding residents. Two residents objected, one a neighbour of the proposed new site. “We’ve never had problems with police or our neighbours,” Mr Abazi said. He said the proposed site, which is an industrial one zone, could provide 30 on-site car spaces. Council officers had “underestimated” just a dozen spaces. “They’re more concerned about

Man jailed for knife and scissor threats By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN has been jailed over a series of violent incidents including pulling knives and scissors on his estranged girlfriend and her new partner. Benjamin Gowland picked up a pair of scissors as he met his ex-girlfriend to discuss separation papers at her apartment about 1.30am on 8 October, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on Monday. He allegedly told her: “If I can’t have you then no one can.” As she tried to take away the scissors, Gowland pushed her back-

wards over a coffee table and into a television stand. After Gowland had been accosted by the victim’s new partner, he drew two knives from a knife block in the kitchen. He pressed the larger knife into the woman’s chest, causing a thin cut to her and tearing her jumper. He cut her temple with the other knife. Gowland dropped the knives and fled after the woman’s partner held kitchen knives to the accused’s back. The accused later told police he was acting in self-defence. “I was more likely going to hurt myself than them, hey,” he said.

Three weeks later, Gowland breached an intervention order protecting the victim. He was also charged with recklessly causing injury when he swung a barstool at a male who was kissing his ex-partner in a Cheltenham pub in 2009. Gowland inadvertently hit his ex-partner in the head with the stool, rendering her unconscious. The accused was also charged over punching several holes into a Dandenong boarding house’s plaster walls during an argument with a female in 2013.

In September, Gowland was charged with assaulting and hindering police who were called to evict his de facto partner from Sundowner Caravan Park, Springvale. Gowland was fined $300, ordered to pay $500 compensation to the boarding house and given a 12-months community corrections order for when he is released from jail in December. His community corrections order includes alcohol and illicit drug treatment, mental health treatment, relationship and men’s behaviour change counselling.

Rotary table changes family’s fortunes

THE 15-YEAR-OLD boy from Britain implicated in the foiled terror plot allegedly targeting Anzac Day services in Melbourne’s south-east has plead guilty. It comes as a 16-year-old girl from the UK, also charged in relation to the plot, was granted bail on strict conditions. The male teen pleaded guilty via video link at the Old Bailey last week to one count of inciting another person to carry out an attack at a service in Australia. The boy, 14 at the time and from north-west England, was arrested in April when police intercepted encrypted conversation allegedly with an 18-year-old man in Australia. He was remanded and will be sentenced in September. In April a 200-strong joint state and federal police counter-terrorism team executed seven search warrants in Narre Warren, Hampton Park, Hallam and Eumemmerring as part of Operation Rising. District Judge Howard Riddle released the girl on bail at Westminster Magistrates’ Court last week. She is next due to appear at Manchester Youth Court in July.

IN BRIEF

By CASEY NEILL THE lives of a Springvale mother and daughter are now a little easier thanks to a $3000 gift. The Rotary Club of Springvale and Springvale Park Special Developmental School joined forces to help Anna Nguyen and her mum My. Occupational therapist Rosie Pike works at the school. She said Anna had cerebral palsy and was fully dependent for all her care and mobility. My is her primary caregiver. “Anna is a considerable weight for My to be lifting numerous times over the day and night for transfers,” Ms Pike said. “My suffers from back, elbow and shoulder pain which is all as a result of her repetitive lifting.” So Ms Pike asked Springvale Rotary Club to help My and Anna, who has attended Springvale Park Special Developmental School since 2002. The club installed a mobile change table on Wednesday 15 July. “Anna is currently being changed on a recliner chair,“ she said. “The change table will ease the physical burden placed on My, who is having to transfer Anna several times a day, and will reduce the risk of illness and injury for Anna.” Springvale Rotarian Brian Woodman said Dandenong-based ABCO Health Care provided the table at a reduced rate. “Rosie sent us an email late last year indicating they were having trouble getting support from community organisations to help them out,” he said. “The family was ecstatic. You could already see the benefits.”

JACK JOHNSON IS THE AUTHOR OF WHEN THE CLOCK STRIKES, A FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF GROWING UP IN DANDENONG, HIS YEARS TENDING TO THE CITY’S PIPES AND DRAINS AS A PLUMBER AND BRINGING UP A FAMILY WITH WIFE FRANCES IN THEIR BELOVED HOME IN MACPHERSON STREET.

Old Bill’s bottles were a constant battle WHEN I was a boy nature strips were untended and householders put their beer bottles out on the long grass. The bottles couldn’t be seen from the road and they knew we would collect them. It also saved them embarrassment and the scorn of the temperance movement by not having to have the bottleO call to collect them with his horse and wagon. My brother Nipper and I would go along McCrae and Langhorne streets with a gunny sack and collect the bottles. We lugged them down to Old Bill the Bottle-Os in McCrae Street. The bottle-O bagged beer bottles in old wheat, bran or spud bags and stored them in his yard and sheds until the berwery or bottle makers called to pick

them up. If the large beer bottles were in good condition we got a ha’penny each for them and at that time that was the only sized beer bottle made. I did say Old Bill, but when we were kids we were never disrespectful of age. In the bottle-Os case ’old’ was a term of respect, even though, in great anger one day, Old Bill just missed leaving the imprint of his hobnail book on Nipper’s small arse after a failed bottle deal.

We had done our usual trek around the nature strips of town and had not found one bottle; not even a plonk bottle, which was worth nothing. Being the small wheeler-dealer that he was, Nipper’s tiny mind was churning over ideas to get a few pennies now that the beer bottle production of the the nature strips had, like the grass, dried up. Suddenly it came to him. Nipper shot off under the McCrae Street bridge to the back of the bottle-O’s yard. He picked up four of the least chipped and cracked bottles from the heap at the back of the yard. He shoved three into the gunny sack I was carrying and taking the one with the least number of chips, cleaned it as best he could.

He then headed back to the front gate of the bottle-O yard, trying hard to look as if we had just come down McCrae Street. Old Bill was studying the racing form. Without taking his eyes off the racing guide he yelled loudly: “Go to the shithouse! They’re broken“. That made me think he had been watching us since we first went up the drain. To my amazement Nipper started another sales pitch. Holding the chipped bottle up towards this fuming person he casually said: “But they are only chipped at the top. So you could cut the top off them.“ With this Old Bill yelled: “Now I am really going to kick your arse“ and leapt from the doorway. Old Bill’s large boot missed the

threadbare seat of Nipper’s pants by a mere half inch. We raced on past Kingsbury’s and Keatings’ houses and shot in behind the large cypress hedge of Smitty’s house, the home of another of Nipper’s mates. As we caught our breath, incredibly the small wheeler dealer was already working out another way to get a few pennies. “Well, we can’t go back to the bottle-Os, even if we find some beer bottles,“ I said. He just mumbled something about next time we should take our sibiling and pretend we were from Dandenong West. “Not me!“ I said. “Old Bill may not have the speed to catch us, but he is certainly not that stupid!“

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 29 July 1915 Off to the War On Sunday week the whole of the staff of the Dandenong Post Office (including Mr Field, ex postmaster) gathered together to make a presentation and say farewell to Mr Roy Crichton a member of the staff, who has enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces. Mr J D Kinvig, postmaster congratulated Mr Crichton on the step he had taken. Mr Crichton was bravely going in a spirit of self sacrifice to fight for the Empire. His (Mr Kinvig) reading had taught him that most of the benefits the world enjoyed were brought about by the self-sacrifice of great

men, and it was that same spirit that animated those who were going to help their country in its time of need. He had known that their young friend would act as a true Australian, in all circumstances, and he trusted would return safe and sound to his old position in the office. He referred to Mr Crichton’s thoroughness as an officer of the department and his courteous demeanour towards the public and his fellow officers. After all present had added their eulogiums of their comrade, and best wishes for his safe return, Mr Kinvig, on behalf of those present, presented Mr Crichton with a wristlet watch, and hoped it might prove

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE State Government is being called to scrap a developers' levy which is designed to recoup the cost of the Revitalising Central Dandenong project. Greater Dandenong Council is among the opponents of the infrastructure recovery charge, set at 5 per cent of each new development’s value within the central Dandenong declared area. The development value includes the cost of building work as well as the land’s value. Councillor Jim Memeti told a council meeting this month that the levy was hindering new development and hence efforts to reduce unemployment. “As a start, it’s things like this which are not helping our city.” Cr Memeti told the Journal that the levy had been inconsistently applied. He said apartment building projects were being put on hold for 18 months due to the levy cost while the levy was waived for large proj-

Paul Kearsley says the council is set to step up lobbying against a state levy on Dandenong developments. 104860 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS ects such as the Australian Tax Office, Government Services Office and the civic centre. Committee for Dandenong chairman Gary Castricum, who also opposed the levy, said “new and

better” developments were what Revitalising Central Dandenong should be about. “We don’t want smaller developers who are trying to develop the area getting hit.”

Paul Kearsley, the council’s group manager of Greater Dandenong Business, said the council had made a representation to Planning Minister Richard Wynne on the issue. “My group is very, very close now to finalising an economic report that highlights the true cost of that particular levy. “That will form the next phase of some advocacy back through to the government in terms of ensuring that we understand and they understand what the issue is with regards to preventing developments from occurring.” Places Victoria, which is the planning authority over central Dandenong developments, requires developers to pay the charge before issuing a building permit. The charge has been in place since 2006 to help recover the government’s $290 million Revitalising Central Dandenong investment. It does not apply to home owners or to businesses doing minor renovations.

Wellspring of goodwill for empowering women By CASEY NEILL WELLSPRINGS for Women is a finalist for the Victorian Community Training Provider of the Year award. Acting manager Holly Gordon said this recognised the hard work from the Dandenong not-for-profit’s management, staff, board members and volunteers, and support from other local agencies and the Greater Dandenong and Casey councils. “We also see this as recognition

that we are successfully continuing the vision of our late founder, Sister Ann Halpin, to ‘empower isolated women to live their lives more fully’,” she said. Ms Gordon said women who attended Wellsprings were often experiencing isolation due to mental illness, domestic violence, financial stress, language barriers, migration and trauma. “These are women who fall through the gaps of other services or

who quickly reach the end of their entitlements to other services in an under-pressure, under-funded community sector of rotating doors,” she said. “Wellsprings is unique amongst training providers in the local area due to our targeted outreach programs and integrated response to meet often complex personal, social and economic needs.” Wellsprings provides pre-accredited education and services to about

200 women and their pre-school aged children each week. It recently achieved Gold Standard Mental Health First Aid Workplace status and has two MHFA instructors on staff to teach volunteers. “This is one of many steps Wellsprings is taking to ensure we are meeting the ever-changing needs of our community,” Ms Gordon said. The winners will be announced at a ceremony during National Skills Week on 28 August.

Attack on unborn baby By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A SPRINGVALE South man who has denied allegedly punching his pregnant wife in the stomach and threatening to kill the inutero baby has been remanded in custody. At a court bail hearing on Monday, the 25-year-old was claimed to have told his wife in front of two of her children at their home on 7 July that: “I am going to kill this baby. “I am not leaving until this baby is dead.” He then allegedly punched her several times in the stomach, causing the victim to fall over in pain, police informant Detective Senior Constable Bree Jarvis told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. Under cross-examination Sen Const Jarvis conceded there was no medical evidence that the victim miscarried or any visible bruising to the victim’s stomach. The strikes to the wife’s stomach were, however, corroborated by her two young children. The man denied the most serious

of nine charges including threatening to inflict serious injury, false imprisonment and intentionally causing injury. He was also charged with breaching a family violence intervention order and resisting police. Police informant Sen Const Jarvis said the apparently sober applicant kicked out at police and urinated on the interview room floor. She said the man – who had previously breached different intervention orders eight times – allegedly told police that he thought women were worthless and could be replaced. The wife had earlier directed the applicant to leave the house or she would call police after he had allegedly driven and crashed her car after drinking the previous night, Sen Const Jarvis said. The applicant allegedly told the victim that morning that it was a “free country” and “I am an Australian citizen and I can drink and drive”. Days earlier, he had been disquali-

fied from driving for four years for repeat drink-driving and unlicensed driving. During the argument, the applicant allegedly punched his wife on the chin, bit her ear lobe, and broke her phone as she tried to call triple zero. As she tried to escape, he allegedly grabbed her by the throat, dragged her to the bedroom and pinned her face-down on the mattress as she pleaded for her life. The applicant chased two of his step-children, covered their mouths and dragged them into the bedroom after the wife told them to get help from their neighbours. “(The wife) is extremely fearful,” Sen Const Jarvis said. “He appears to have no regard for the law.” Defence lawyer Patricia Jones urged the court to take into account the man’s registered intellectual disability, his consent to a full intervention order to protect the wife and his 14 days in custody since the incident. She said the wife had also raised a

claim of violence in 2014, which led to police laying and then dropping charges against her and the applicant. “There’s some real doubt as to the strength of the police case,” she said – having also aired misgivings about the wife’s lack of visible injuries. Magistrate Greg Connellan said he was concerned for the wife, the impact on the children and by the man’s “attitude in some parts”. Mr Connellan, in adjourning the bail hearing, said he needed more information on the man’s disability as well as to examine the children’s statements. “I have to give considerable weight to what’s in the children’s statements and in part to their mother’s concerns if they can safely return home if (the applicant) is in the community.” The man was remanded in custody to appear in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 11 August.

Friendly eyes needed for the neighbourhood beat GREATER Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch needs fresh eyes and ears to help keep the community safe. President Dawn Vernon is calling on people from across the municipality – especially Keysborough’s new estates –to sign up. The 70-year-old and her husband Reg compile and distribute a regular newsletter, run a Facebook page and organise information nights. Their ageing support team is dwindling. “I have had so many

people this year get seriously ill so they cannot help anymore,” Ms Vernon said. They’re seeking community-minded people to lend a hand. “This is an opportunity to get involved and make a difference,” she said. “Your participation is strictly voluntary and you can donate as much or as little time as you are able. “There’s a whole lot of roles and even if it’s only a couple of hours a year, every bit helps.” Neighbourhood Watch

Victoria president Michael Strong will speak at a public forum at Noble Park’s Paddy O’Donoghue Centre from 7.30pm to 9pm on Wednesday 16 September. He’s been a barrister, crown prosecutor, County Court judge, deputy president of Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), Office of Police Integrity director and Australian Crime Commission examiner. Greek treats for saint celebrations By GEORGIA WESTGARTH BAKLAVA, souvlaki and loukoumades took the limelight over the weekend as the Greek community of Dandenong celebrated Saint Panteleimon day and its deep roots. For 56 years the Greek Orthodox Community of Dandenong and Districts has been teaching and embracing its and other cultures in the area and for the second time came together in celebration on Sunday. Hundreds flocked to embrace the delicious treats on offer along with the tradition, at the Saint Panteleimon Greek Orthodox Church in Herbert Street, Dandenong. Secretary at the church Greg Va-

gias said the event catered for everyone. “There was traditional Greek food on offer, dancing, and of course the Zorba, a jumping castle for the kids and a stall with popcorn and fairy floss run by the churches after hour’s Greek school,” Mr Vagias said. With a DJ, marquee and lots of full tummies, Mr Vagias said it was fantastic to see everyone embracing the festival. “It brings the community together, not just the Greek community but the wider community and allows everyone to share in the multicultural environment - it’s blending of the Australian and Greek cultures and that’s pretty cool,” he said.

Suburb gripped by despair By CASEY NEILL DOVETON is among the state’s seven most disadvantaged postcodes and in danger of ‘dropping off the edge’, a new report says. Jesuit Social Services and Catholic Social Services Australia on Tuesday 21 July released Dropping off the Edge 2015, which maps disadvantage across the country based on 22 social indicators. Doveton was in Band 1 – the most disadvantaged – in 2004, Band 2 in 2007 and this year returned to Band 1. Dandenong this year featured in Band 4. The report said a “web of disadvantage” made it almost impossible for residents to overcome their postcode and that community-led action was crucial to turn the trend around. Catholic Social Services Australia CEO Marcelle Mogg said the most dominant factors in the most disadvantaged Victorian postcodes included unemployment, criminal convictions, disability, low education, child maltreatment, family violence and psychiatric admissions. “These communities are not failing – Australia is failing these communities,” she said. “To provide better opportunities to these communities will take sustained effort and commitment on behalf of government, business, the community sector and the communities themselves.” Jesuit Social Services CEO Julie Edwards said the disadvantaged communities didn’t have access to opportunities allowing them to flourish, like education, employment and safe and affordable housing. “This report may be stark and confronting, but poses a challenge that we as a nation can rise to,” she said.

Job makes refugees feel they’ve arrived WHAT does having a job mean to a refugee? “I’m happy,” was Dandenong man Hussain Bakhtiari’s simple response, a grin on his face. CatholicCare guided him into employment at Cabrini Linen Service (CLS) in Dandenong South. Tomasa Morales, the south eastern cluster team leader for CatholicCare’s refugee and settlement program, spoke out following the Dropping off the Edge report’s release. “It’s very important to find employers who are willing to give a chance to newly-arrived families, who are willing to be mentors for them, to give them the opportunity to learn in the workplace,” she said. “If you are at home doing nothing you lose interest in learning.” Ms Morales pointed to Dandenong man Baqit Yazdani. “Now that he’s working he knows that he needs to improve his English,” she said. “Now he’s come back to the men’s conversation group.” CLS compliance manager Elsa Chung said workers learnt on the job and a buddy system helped them to gain experience and knowledge. “It’s providing them with skills that they can take elsewhere,” she said. “I think it makes them feel more The report called for a multi-layered, co-operative and co-ordinated strategy owned and driven by the community.

It’s about providing the opportunity.” CatholicCare CEO Father Joe Caddy said the organisation had been working in Doveton and Dandenong for several years. “It was terribly disappointing to hear that the ranking of many of these communities has not improved since

similar studies were first conducted in 1999,” he said. “The findings of the report confirm what we have observed while working with families in these communities – their needs are complex and solutions are neither quick nor easy. “We have found that the best outcomes have been achieved when we have worked in close partnership with local government and the community and business sectors.”

“It must involve all layers of government and the business and community sectors, reflecting shared responsibility and joint commitment to resolve this

entrenched problem,” the report said. “Community leaders must be engaged to drive sustained change. “Without such action, there is a sig-

THE Journal was a little puzzled by Minister Jane Garrett’s appearance in a recent State Government media release. She’s the Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Liquor Regulation Minister but approved more

than $4.86 million for affordable housing projects, including one in Dandenong. We’re wondering which portfolio this fell under? A MAGISTRATE showed a light-sabre like wit on the bench last Monday. A police prosecutor declared that an accused was facing a charge of making a false representation for “admission into the force”. His Honour quipped an inquiry into whether the accused was seeking to join The Force as a Jedi Knight. Better that than the Dark Side, we guess. For the record, it was over an admission to the police force.

HERE’S a strange request for a person who was slapped with an intervention order. Having been charged with assaulting a man, the accused asked if it was all right to name the ‘victim’ as a paedophile. The magistrate, though tactfully saying he shouldn’t give any legal advice, suggested that would not be a wise move.

THE Journal is gearing up to mark 150 years since the first edition rolled off the press in August 1865. A window display charting the history of the newspaper, which was first published as the South Bourke and Mornington Journal, will open tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Dandenong Library in Harmony Square. The display features, among other things, a timeline of Dandenong and the Journal, legendary reporter Marg Stork’s Imperial typewriter, a copy of the paper from the 1800s and award-winning photographs snapped by Journal photographers. The public can view the isplay until 17 August. The Journal has also commissioned a short film to mark

E VOIC YOUR

the milestone which will be shown on the big screen in Harmony Square. The screening of the film will co-incide with a special commemorative edition of the Journal on 10 August marking the historic milestone. Editor Narelle Coulter said the special edition would pay tribute to the Journal’s rich history and the integral part it had played as the newspaper of record in the Dandenong region. “The commemorative edition will be a keepsake that we hope readers will treasure,“ said Ms Coulter.

“We have talked to lots of people who have had a connection with the Journal over the decades from former paper boys and girls to celebrities who grew up in the area. “Not many newspapers reach the grand old age of 150, so it’s a very special milestone of which the whole community should be proud.“ Present and former Journal staff will reminisce at a staff reunion at the Dandenong Club on 10 August. Anyone who worked for the Journal and who is interested in attending the reunion would be welcome and should contact Robyn Butler on 5941 2666 or email journal@starnewsgroup. com.au.

Tucked in this quiet street in the Harrisfield pocket is this gem of a home – a versatile and unique find in the area. This original home is in great condition, but on a block size of 617m2 (approx) you have the choice to either renovate for a lifestyle of luxury or redevelop and build multiple dwellings (STCA). Whichever way you view it, you’ll be please with your future prospects.

Plans and Permits to Build in the front! This is the one - tucked in the bowl of this court is a unit with a huge amount of space in the front that will be known as the future site of a brand new townhouse. The plans are ready to go, it’s just waiting for an investor / developer to take advantage of this secure project and reap the rewards. The single storey unit currently enjoys a secure long term tenant, so this purchase will earn you an income so that you can build when you’re ready!

This well planned & good sized 3 BDR home has the potential to be anything your heart desires. It needs to be brought back to life with some modern touches, but it’s ready to be lived in whether you occupy it yourself or put in a tenant. Then you have the option to build at the rear with so much land on offer or perhaps you would rather demolish the block & use the 663m2 (approx) & build multiple townhouses on this residential growth area (formerly known as Zone 2 (all STCA).

DO NOT JUDGE BY THE COVER – if you do, you’ll miss out on one of the most fascinating, well planned and renovated homes in the area. It’s freshly revitalized for an easy living lifestyle. Beyond the elevated entry and porch, you will find solid timber floors throughout, three good size bedrooms with BIRs, a modern living with dining, open kitchen & a refreshed bathroom. Plus if you love to entertain, the undercover timber decked alfresco has plenty of room & overlooks the yard.

Ward class delivers

The voice of the community since 1865 Incorporating Star Greater Dandenong

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH HOSPITAL waiting rooms are changing the lives of pregnant refugee women in Dandenong. Turning maternity waiting rooms at the Dandenong Hospital into a learning space where non-English speaking mums to be can learn English from trained professionals has left co-ordinator Siobhan Robinson smiling from ear to ear. “I’ve watched the women come in hesitant at first and leave feeling confident, some even coming back when they don’t have appointments just to learn and practise their conversation skills,” Ms Robinson said. After the success of the Family English Language Program at the Monash Medical Centre in Clayton, founder Maggie Lynch was ecstatic to see the program open in Dandenong. “These women often fall through the cracks and if they don’t learn English early enough once they give birth life gets busy and stressful and refining their language skills doesn’t happen, which can lead to isolation,” Ms Lynch said. The language program also provides cultural awareness classes for nurses and doctors, which Ms Lynch said is very important. “Doctors often say things like ‘hop off the bed’ and explain things back to front, so we teach them how to phrase things so non-English speaking patients can better understand them. "Once a Cambodian women wasn’t eating because she had no money and didn’t understand the hospital food was free. “It’s simple things like that and hospital terminology can be hard to understand, so we teach them some words to help them through their

Assisting pregnant women while they wait has been a daily practice in Clayton for 26 years and the one day a week program started in Dandenong in April. Cambodian soon-to-be mother of two Srey So has been attending the Dandenong English classes for more than two months and said the classes are improving her life

in many ways. “I come even when I don’t have an appointment, it’s so exciting learning and when you learn more you have more questions to ask and here I get one-on-one tutoring. “Communication is everything and it means I can read street signs and get around better, easier to go shopping, order food and read menus, make friends and understand

people on the phone,” Ms So said. Organising home tutors for the women once they give birth is Ms Lynch and Ms Robinson’s number one aim. “We are very passionate about integrating them into the community and this program is a vital pathway and I have seen the success over 26 years and know it works,” Ms Lynch said.

Students’ strong voice By GEORGIA WESTGARTH DETERMINED and wise beyond his years Minaret College school captain Qais Sadat took his vision for a better VCE experience to the 10th Annual Victorian Student Representative Council (VicSRC) congress for the second time. After moving to Australia from New Zealand, Qais started at Minaret College in Year 10 and has since established himself as a leader with a passionate voice for student well-being. Not only a member of the VicSRC, Qais was the master of ceremonies at this year’s congress meeting and has had an executive role within the VicSRC for two terms. “When I first went to congress I was very passionate about student voice and what congress

stood for – I just felt like I needed to take up the opportunity to represent not only myself but the students of Victoria,” Qais said. The three-day student-led congress engages students in democratic processes and allows them to vote for their executive leaders along with debating and Q&A discussions on bullying, student well-being and welfare, environmental issues and school culture. At the congress, Qais decided to discuss his opinion on student disengagement during VCE. “I’ve noticed a lack of motivation in VCE students across the board; I think they feel like school is more about grades than actually gaining an education, there is a stigma attached to certain pathways after and during VCE such as VCAL or TAFE,” Qais said.

Running as an executive of the VicSRC from 2013 to 2015 allowed Qais and the executive team of 15 boys and girls to establish a working relationship with the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) to promote all avenues and pathways after Year 12. Edging toward the pointy end of his secondary education Qais said he was aiming to study medicine after Year 12 and hoped to see some changes in years to come surrounding student wellbeing in VCE. “I felt there was a strong voice from the students at the congress and they want to see change in VCE and give students that courage to stand up and voice their opinion,” Qais said.

Survey reveals residents feel safer on the streets By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS GREATER Dandenong residents are feeling safer in their neighbourhoods. But the State Government survey discovered that Noble Park and Springvale residents are the least happy with their council’s “direction”. In the Local Government Community Satisfaction Survey 2015, less than half of respondents answered positively to the council’s tailored question “How safe do you feel walking alone in your local area after dark?”

Its score of 48 per cent was, however, markedly up on 40 per cent feeling safe in 2014. Other findings include: Young adults, 18 to 34 years old, were most “favourably disposed” to the council but 35 to 49 year olds were the least favourable; Springvale residents were most positive about the council’s community consultation and making decisions in the community interest, but were the least pleased with customer service; Dandenong residents were the most

· · ·

positive about the council’s direction and Noble Park and Keysborough residents the least so. Cr O’Reilly said the overall results reinforce Greater Dandenong as an “enviable” place to live and visit. The council collected a 65-point index score for overall performance - five percentage points higher than the state average. Greater Dandenong also rated higher than the state average in all seven subcategories of community consultation (up significantly from 2014), overall di-

rection, sealed roads, customer service, advocacy and decisions made in the community interest. The council’s overall and sealed-roads ratings are marginally lower than for other outer Melbourne metro councils. The survey also identified maintenance of sealed roads and public areas and communication as among the council’s weaknesses. Residents rated the council highly for its community facilities, parks and gardens, street maintenance, diversity, waste management and customer service.

Works near completion for pavilion THE redeveloped Edinburgh Reserve pavilion will be officially opened on Tuesday. The project involved the refurbishment of two existing pavilions, which were combined to create a single pavilion with improved change rooms, shower and toilet amenities and a multipurpose space. The pavilion will be officially opened by Sports Minister John Eren. The opening will also coincide with a community sports fun day hosted by the City of Greater Dandenong in partnership with Sandown Cobras All Abilities Sports. This is a free event from 10am to 2pm and is open to all ages and abilities. “This is a great testament to the commitment council has to improving our sporting facilities throughout our municipality, which in turn will improve the health and wellbeing of our community who take park in the many sporting activities the city has on offer,“ Mayor Shaun O’Reilly said.

Art stream celebrates By GEORGIA WESTGARTH VISITORS can look out for a stream of artistic talent as local and aspiring artists of all ages get creative for the Noble Park Art Show’s 10th Anniversary display. The official launch of the show on Thursday 23 July at the Noble Park Community Centre celebrated all things art and welcomed councillors, artists and community groups to help kick off the event and birthday celebrations. Community centre manager Brian Woodman said the launch party helped to remind people to get painting. “Entries are now open for the show and prizes are awarded to every category from the juniors’ under 16s and all abilities through to the aged care section,” Mr Woodman said. The community art show welcomes artists of most mediums including oil, acrylic, pastel, gouache, watercolour, pencil, ink, mixed media, charcoal and photography. Mr Woodman said the show is very popular among local schools receiving about 300 entries and about 100 entries from the aged care section. “It’s a fantastic experience for people to come down and see their art up on display,” he said. This year visual and community art co-ordinator at the City of Greater Dandenong David O’Halloran, a curator with 30 years’ experience, will be judging the art show which has an optional theme of ‘celebration’. The show will open on Friday 9 October and entries close on Thursday 17 September. For more information on the art show or to download an entry form visit www. nobleparkcommunitycentre.org.au.

Centrelink parking reviewed GREATER Dandenong Council has been accused of unfairly targeting people “below the poverty line” by installing parking meters outside Centrelink’s Dandenong office. Jackie Hay, who organised an online petition against the meters, said she noticed the parking metres when she was helping her frail grandmother to hand in papers at the office. “It feels like the council is targeting people struggling to find work and struggling to live,” she said. She said Centrelink clients often waited in queues for beyond the meters’ twohour limits. “They have to go out and feed the meters – and lose their spot in the queue – or stay in Centrelink to go find work and get a fine.” At a council meeting this month, councillor Jim Memeti asked if something could be done to better “look after” Centrelink clients who park longer than two hours. City planning director Jody Bosman said he would provide a response to councillors indicating the options “in terms of longer stay and free parking in the area”.

TAX TIME

Employees’ payment options stances and how much they earn. The first $18,200 Australian residents earn is tax free, although in some circumstances this is reduced. For example, if someone earns additional income (for example, from a second job or a taxable pension) their second payer is required to withhold tax at the higher ‘no tax-free threshold’ rate. If their second payer does not withhold a higher rate of tax this may mean that the employee has a tax debt at the end of the financial year. However, if they are certain their total income for the year will be less than $18,200 they can claim the taxfree threshold from each payer. The employee may also need to pay

When an employee starts a job the employer is required to withhold tax from wages on their behalf and, in most cases, to pay super into your super account. Employees need to supply their tax file number (TFN) and complete a TFN declaration which the employer uses to work out how much tax to withhold from pay. Workers are required to pay income tax on their salary and wages, most Centrelink payments, investment income from rent, bank interest or dividends they receive, profits from selling shares or property and income from business. The amount of income tax and the tax rate they pay depends on circum-

a Medicare levy, generally 2 per cent of their taxable income. If an employee has an accumulated Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) debt or an accumulated Financial Supplement debt, they need to include this information on their TFN declaration. Depending on how much the employee earns they may have to make repayments on this debt as part of their income tax payment. Employees need to lodge a tax return each year. You may be eligible to claim tax deductions for expenses they directly incur in earning their income. However, they cannot claim the cost of normal domestic or private expenses.

EMPLOYEES have both rights and obligations when they are changing jobs. The Australian Tax Office says that when they leave or change jobs or take a second job - their rights and obligations may change, just as they would if they moved overseas or if they left the workforce or retired. While they are working they must pay income tax on payments they receive from their employer which their employer will deduct. At the end of the financial year employees need to lodge a tax return and may receive a refund after claiming deductible expenses. Your employer will generally be required to pay super contributions.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Camera couple set to roll with the changes By CASEY NEILL BRUCE and Dawn Van Krieken have watched generations of Dandenong families grow up. They’ve also seen the town and its businesses grow and evolve during their 27 years at Dandenong Image Centre. This Thursday (23 July) they’ll work their final day at the Dimmeys Arcade store before handing over the reins to seek a sea change. “I’ll miss all my regular customers,” Dawn said. “We’ve got some oldies who come in and bring you flowers for your birthday and things like that. “They just come in to see you and for the company. “But it’s a new chapter in your life. You’ve got to change. “We met each other working together and still work together so I deserve some time away from my husband!” Dawn was a courier and Bruce was a manager at a pharmacy back when onehour photo developing was just emerging. “That’s how we got into the photo business,” she said. They set up in Dandenong in 1988 across the road from their current Langhorne Street location. “We moved across here in 1999. We’ve been here ever since,” Bruce said. “It is continuing as a family business. “The new owners are Delio and Lucia Fagundes.” Delio conceded he had big shoes to fill. “Customers, they know Bruce and Dawn very well,” he said. “It will be a bit of a challenge at the beginning. “I will just carry on what they’ve been doing here.” He also plans to introduce studio photography and run his existing wedding invitations business.

Dawn and Bruce Van Krieken behind the Dandenong Image Centre counter. 141224 “We are trying to find Bruce’s clone,” he laughed. And with good reason. Bruce said the tipping point from film to digital came in 2005. “Digital’s been a big change but the store has kept up with it,” he said. “You don’t do as many prints as you did, but you can do so much more. “Years ago we never had things like canvas prints or photo gifts - photos on cups and T-shirts and jewellery.” Dawn said developing film was more interesting than dealing with digital prints. “People go ‘oh you’re blinking, let’s take it again’ and you don’t have any of those candid shots,” she said. “I call it staged photography because everyone poses for a photo now instead of being natural. “We can’t stress that enough that people shouldn’t keep the amount of photos on their phone that they do. “Make sure you print the important ones.

“There will be an era that will grow up and they will have hardly any history prints. “Our grandparents took photos of every occasion, printed them, put them in an album, printed them, wrote dates on them ... ” Bruce and Dawn count John Farnham, Denise Drysdale, Lindsay Fox and the Dulux dog among their past customers. “We would have dealt with every company that’s been in Dandenong,” Bruce said. They also served the Journal, Dandenong and District Historical Society and CFA crime scene investigators. “You had to check them but you were trying to glance over them because you didn’t want to see too much,” Dawn said. They’ve developed photos for “all the ones that the streets are named after” including former mayor Maurie Jarvis and his wife Gwen. “I used to love talking to her. She’d

tell you so much history,” Dawn said. “She was an amazing lady with an amazing memory.” They even cast their eyes over a Ribena berry or two. “We used to do a lot of work for SmithKline Beecham when they did the blackcurrants for the Ribena,” Dawn laughed. “They used to bring them in by the roll full, of different vats of Ribena berries. “There’d be hundreds of prints of Ribena berries. We couldn’t see any difference.” But she’s watched with interest as families have grown. “The jeweller across the road, we saw his kids’ photos, we saw his son get married and now we’re seeing his grandkids. They’re growing up,” she said. “You see generations of families growing up. “Thanks to everyone who’s been through our doors in the past 27 years.”

Minister launches future for rail research THE rail industry’s best and brightest are on track to achieve global growth. Parliamentary Secretary for Industry and Science Karen Andrews officially launched the Rail Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) at Bombardier Transport in Dandenong on Tuesday 21 July. Guests included representatives from CSIRO, government, universities and business, some who’d travelled from as far afield as Bendigo and Thomastown. The Rail Manufacturing CRC stemmed from the On Track to 2040 - The Rail Technology Roadmap, which defined the industry’s vision and identifies opportunities. The Federal Government committed $31 million to the new CRC and participants will contribute about $53 million in cash and in-kind contributions. Ms Andrews said Australia’s rail industry was fragmented and had not previously collaborated effectively on technology development. “The new CRC will create stability within the sector while also enabling Australia’s rail manufacturing firms to expand into overseas markets and global supply chains,” she said. She said the CRC was also expected to boost Australia’s highly skilled workforce by turning out at least eight PhD students. Ms Andrews said domestic freight rail had doubled over the past 20 years and was expected to grow by 3 per cent each year until 2030. “Likewise, passenger rail is starting to

At the launch, back, Rene Lalande, Keith McLean, Stuart Thomson, front, Karen Andrews, Paul Johnson, Lily D'Ambrosio, and, far right, Tony Carney. return as a favoured mode of transport and cities like Canberra, Gold Coast and Sydney are all investing money in new light rail systems,” she said. CRC business development director Tony Carney said now was the time to revitalise and reshape the sector. He said innovation was key to the sector’s future and its challenges included reduced local content requirements in some states, the car industry departure and the need to globalise. “The new CRC will help to create jobs, reduce supply chain costs and will also

play an important part in making Australian exports more competitive,” Ms Andrews said. CRC chairman Paul Johnson said the centre would co-ordinate collaborative research and foster partnerships and the key challenge was translating great ideas into market innovations. “It’s not an innovation until it’s actually been used,” he said. CRC managing director and CEO Dr Stuart Thomson said the launch came at a critical time for the manufacturing sector. He said the centre would link the in-

dustry with research providers, help each understand the other’s capabilities and align their expectations. CSIRO’s manufacturing flagship director Keith McLean has contributed to the Vision CRC and the CRC for Polymer. “Both have delivered world-leading technology to the marketplace,” he said. Mr McLean said Australia ranked poorly for innovation efficiency and collaboration. He said the Rail Manufacturing CRC was in a position to make a profound impact on the rail sector, ensuring employment and exports. Bombardier managing director Rene Lalande took the morning’s wild wind as a symbol for the brainstorming that would take place at the CRC. “Our industry mission is to move people,” he said. Mr Lalande said Bombardier’s founder invented the snow mobile when he encountered transport issues in Canadian snow. “Our company is built on innovation,” he said. State Industry Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the centre would enhance the local rail manufacturing centre’s capacity and competitiveness. She said the State Government had provided the industry with certainty through a 10-year rolling stock strategy announced in this year’s budget, which included $2 billion in funding. - CASEY NEILL

Land sale vote due GREATER Dandenong Council is set to sell its former Springvale Depot site for $11 million. Councillors are set to vote tonight (Monday 27 July) on a proposal to sell the 20,000 square metre site at 32-40 View Road to developer Met510. The company has experience in large-scale residential projects and “has the full resources of the Metricon Group available”. A council report said that, based on its tender submission and an interview, Met510 would “provide the best financial outcome and the most appropriate type of development”. Japanese visitors delight By GEORGIA WESTGARTH JAPANESE high school students have landed in Noble Park to a warm welcome. Students from Noble Park Secondary College’s Japanese sister school, Shinminato Senior High School, arrived on Monday 20 July to a special assembly. Students showcased traditional cultural dance, song and music and host families met with their new guests for the first time. Seven students and two staff members from the Japanese high school will be sightseeing and taking in the Australian education system for one week. Noble Park Secondary College principal Pam Dyson said her students were already yearning to visit Japan. “I hope that the host students, in particular, continue to communicate with their Japanese guest whether it is through Skype, email, Facebook or written letters. “It would be really great for them to keep those lines of communication open af-

ter an experience like this,” Ms Dyson said. Japanese has been taught at the school for many years and Ms Dyson said hosting the visitors has allowed the students to continue to master the language outside of the classroom. “The cultural exchange has been a delight, they are very much embracing our Australian culture and we theirs,” she said. Ms Dyson is hoping to send students to Japan next year. “We haven’t gone over to Japan since 2009 because we were interrupted by the tragic events of the tsunami and especially after this experience the students are really keen to go,” she said. A sayonara (goodbye) party will be held on Friday 24 July to say farewell to the Japanese friends. “We had a fantastic welcoming assembly - we sung the Australian national anthem and they sung theirs, it’s been a fantastic cultural experience for everyone,” she said.

Proud to be ASEAN Joey By JARROD POTTER THE first step on the path to his boyhood dream - pulling on a Socceroos’ jersey - is about to begin for Dandenong soccer star Mersim Memeti. Trading his Thunder and Melbourne City gear for the Australian colours for a fortnight, Memeti, 15, was picked by Joeys’ coach Tony Vidmar to be part of the 23-man squad for the upcoming ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Under-16 Youth Championships in Cambodia, starting this week. While Memeti is happy to let his soccer do most of the talking, he was thrilled to get a chance to wear the Australian uniform and never wants to take it off as he hopes to one day progress to the national senior side. “It’s pretty good and I’m

proud to make it,” Memeti said. “I was feeling pretty happy and pretty proud when they told me and I’d love to win the tournament with the team. “I would love to play in the Socceroos one day - it’s playing for Australia… it’s a great experience for me… just need to take it step by step.” Memeti’s Cambodian journey will be action packed as Australia prepares for the AFC Under-16 Championships as part of the qualification process for the Under-17 World Cup. The Joeys are in Group B for the Phnom Penh-based tournament which started last week and will taking on Singapore, the Philippines, Myanmar and Cambodia. Memeti will line up in the Joey’s defensive end, just as he has plied his craft playing for Dandenong Thunder and the

Football Federation Victoria (FFV) side while training with Melbourne City’s NPL1 team. But it could’ve been a different tale for the young defender, who started his soccer journey as a goalkeeper. Destiny called however and he threw aside the gloves in favour of heading feet-first into his soccer and hasn’t looked back on the move. “I play centre back for Melbourne City and Dandenong Thunder and will play centre back for Australia too,” Memeti said. “I started my career as a keeper, then I went to left wing... but I’m happy to stay on the field.” He wanted to thank his family for their support, Melbourne City and Dandenong Thunder and everyone associated with the FFV development program.

BASEBALL STATE WINTER CHAMPIONSHIPS - Under-14 Grand Final

Level heads clinch title By JARROD POTTER SIX games, two days, one state champion team. Dandenong Baseball Association (DBA) continued its domination of the State Winter Championship after its under-14 brigade stormed past the likes of Geelong, Ringwood and Diamond Valley to take the title. Dandenong won five of its six matches to clinch the title and DBA head coach Jade Hough had high praise for the extremely talented team’s performance, especially considering the current age of most in the roster. “Some of these kids given that they’re 12 and 13-years of age - the talent that they put on show over the weekend was absolutely amazing,” Hough said. “To come away with so many close wins and play level headed the whole time

was unbelievable.” After conceding their one loss of the carnival to Ringwood on Saturday, after the match timed out and the scores reverted, the DBA needed to win everything on Sunday to clinch the title beyond doubt. There would be no nails bitten as Dandenong soared against Ringwood the second time around - smashing the opposition 9-3 to all but retain the championship. Hough had to hold back her joy and convince the side the last match had more on the line than in actuality. “If we didn’t beat Ringwood we would’ve had no chance of winning - that was the most important game - and we beat them by six runs… that pretty much sealed the championship for us,” Hough said.

Liz Cambage will return to Dandenong... this time as an Australian Opal in an international friendly against Japan on Monday. 122050 Picture: JARROD POTTER

By JARROD POTTER Jed Woodger rockets off another cannon from the pitcher’s mound. 141960 “I had a feeling going into the last game that we had already won the championships - but I didn’t tell the boys and I told them they had to win it. “Very last game we ended up winning with one run within the last minute of the game - as we’d already gone over 10 minutes that we were allowed.” Hough thought the side’s big hitters Joshua Smith, Jed Woodger, Dante Caruso and Mack Turley - were most impressive alongside pocket rocket Josh Ashen. Pakenham’s Emily Devine earned her place in the side

and made the most of the opportunity to face off against the state’s best. “She didn’t do too bad - struggled a little bit, but being the only girl and everything on the team, speaking from experience it’s a bit hard,” Hough said. “Best asset would be her hitting... she’s got a bit of strength behind her.” The DBA’s under-12s are up next, squaring off against the rest of the state over the weekend at Albert Roy Reserve, Bendigo (after the Journal went to press).

SOUTH EAST basketball sensation Elizabeth Cambage will finally return to Dandenong basketball courts - but not in the way we expected last year. Cambage is set to return to her junior basketball home at Stud Road, this time in the Jayco Australian Opals’ uniform with the team to play a three-game series against Japan next week. The series will provide a crucial lead-in to the 2015 FIBA Oceania Championships where the Opals will play New Zealand for automatic qualification to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The Jayco Australian Opals will play against the Asian number-one World Championships seed Japan at Dandenong on 27 July, in Frankston on 29 July and finally Ballarat on 31 July. Cambage has been sidelined since the eve of the 2014 FIBA World Championships when she ruptured her Achilles tendon. The 23-year-old will join the 16-strong squad with selections

for the Oceanias on the line. “It’s fantastic to have Liz back,” Jayco Opals coach Brendan Joyce said. “We’ll ease her into it. “It’s a bonus to have her available for the series against Japan, but the focus is to have her on court against New Zealand.” The 16-woman squad also brings together a core group from the Opals’ tour of Europe in June with former and current Dandenong Rangers replete throughout the roster. Another local set to don the green and gold will be Endeavour Hills’ rising star Aimie Clydesdale, who comes into the squad following her recent experience with the Emerging Opals at the World University Games. It won’t be the only high calibre match coming to Dandenong Basketball Stadium this winter season as NBL side Melbourne United will host American college side Louisiana State University (LSU) on Thursday 20 August from 7pm.

Super Rangers subdue Supercats By JARROD POTTER

Rehab… no no no!

SEABL - Round 15 DANDENONG shook the Supercats’ resolve on Saturday evening with an epic 80-78 come-from-behind victory. Playing on unfriendly turf in Geelong, the Rangers ensured they would ruin the party even more to take win number 11 and bunch up the top seeds ahead of the final few weeks of the home-and-away season. Trailing 58-65 at the last break, Dandenong rallied to negate the Supercats’ top offensive weapons - halting Kimmani Barrett and Eric Gaff in the dying minutes. Coach Darren Perry left it to his star four - as Daequon Montreal (22 points, 7 rebounds), Andrew Harms (16 points, 7 assists), Lucas Walker (15 points) and Chuck Long (15 points) relished another nail-biter. Perry’s men sit one win away from the top of the SEABL East Conference with three rounds to play, making for an exciting finish to the home-and-away season. The Rangers’ women waltzed past secondranked Geelong taking a 96-59 win on the back of supreme efforts via Tenaya Phillips (20 points), Faith Probst (14 points, 12 rebounds) and on her return to the line-up after a threemonth lay-off Amelia Todhunter (13 points). The Rangers women only need one win from their final four to stitch up top seed in the SEABL East. The Rangers will host Ballarat on Sunday afternoon (After the Journal went to press).

By JARROD POTTER “THE harder the struggle, the more glorious the triumph.” This humble mantra was tweeted by Hawthorn footballer Alex Woodward after yet another charactertesting challenge had been placed between him and his football career. Woodward, 22, had to be helped from the field a fortnight ago in the VFL Round-14 clash between Box Hill and Coburg. After only five minutes on field, Woodward was stretchered off following another anterior cruciate ligament tear in his prone right knee. The Noble Park/Sandringham Dragons’ alumnus looks set to endure another huge stint in the rehab group after only returning from back-to-back knee operations in 2012 and 2013. It is the third time Woodward the reigning Liston Trophy winner

BIG V - Round 18 THE Cougar call couldn’t contain Coburg as The Keysborough womens’ season ended with a gallant 75-102 defeat. The Cougars couldn’t knock over Coburg, despite a superhuman effort from Billie Lucas - who rattled off a season-high 41 points to go with 13 rebounds. With support from Emily Rider (13 points, 9 rebounds) and Ashleigh Wright (7 points), the Cougars held on for dear life, but couldn’t halt the final’ bound Giants. Keysborough women ended their second BIG V Division-2 season with a much improved record - finishing the home-andaway season in eighth place with a 5-11 record under first year coach Craig Smethurst. Billie Lucas is one of the top candidates for the Division’s MVP award, finishing the season with a league-leading 328 points as she averaged 20.5 points and 9.7 rebounds per game as well as prominent numbers for total rebounds (155), free throws made (75) and total steals (39). Also topping the BIG V tables from Keysborough was Emily Rider - who had the most defensive rebounds in the division with 111. Keysborough men played Coburg on Sunday afternoon (after the Journal went to print).

for the VFL’s best and fairest - has been sent under the knife for that troublesome joint. Woodward, when asked about his run of injuries last year, said the main thing was to strive to get back as there’s always a bright side to the struggles of day-to-day recovery. “I’ve been in that position before, but probably the main thing is to be patient,” Woodward said to the Journal last year. “Persevere with whatever you’re doing - football or any other sport because if you’re willing to do the hard yards it’s going to pay dividends eventually.” At a press conference on Thursday, Hawthorn coach Alistair Clarkson said it will be a tough road back to the AFL, but Woodward has it in him to return to the senior side once again. “That’s a really sad situation that he’s going to have his third knee

Noble Park alumnus Alex Woodward will miss another season after undergoing his third knee reconstruction in only four years. 115924 Picture: JARROD POTTER reco,” Clarkson said. “One thing that does occur when you have to go through that process is that you become a very, very resilient character and he’s certainly that way. “His outlook and positivity is unbelievable for someone who has had

to endure so much hardship over the last three years. “Hopefully he returns and we’ll support him as much as we can through his rehab.” Woodward was booked in for knee surgery last week.

Beach? only a Rumour in the Pipeline By JASON ADAMS LAST Thursday evening at Sandown Park was a memorable one for trainer Arthur Connell after his one-and-only racing greyhound Pipeline Rumour claimed his first city-class win. Pipeline Rumour was fast to begin from box three and gained a 10-length gap from his rivals first time past the post. Tiring in the home straight, Pipeline Rumour hung on to win by one-and-a-half lengths completing the 715 metres in 42.59. “He was looking for somewhere to lay down half way down the straight - he did all his hard work early,” said Connell. Pipeline Rumour’s journey to Connell’s Corinella kennel was one out of the ordinary, with a negotiation at the mines between Connell’s son and a friend. “My son works at the mines and his friend had a stud dog in Sydney who had pups available - so my son agreed to buy a pup.” “I educated him myself and got him ready-to-race - he’s the most well behaved dog I’ve ever had,

doesn’t cause any trouble and has a beautiful nature.” Although only 20 starts into Pipeline Rumour’s career, Connell has received multiple offers from all over the country however none desirable enough to tempt him. “I’ve had three offers for him and even one from Western Australia, but we decided to knock them all back - he’s probably one of the better dogs I’ve had over the years, they’re hard to come across so we’re looking forward to having a bit of fun with him.” Connell is no stranger to the sport having trained greyhounds for over 50 years. “I got my trainer’s license back in 1964, after that I got married, had kids and was working eight hours a day before working the dogs.” “I had a block in Wonthaggi… though sold it due to some health problems - if something happened to me it would have been tough for my wife to look after it.” Now living in the seaside town of Corinella, Connell and Pipeline Rumour are regulars at the local beach.

No whispers or innuendo needed after Arthur Connell’s Pipeline Rumour claimed its first city win. 142238 Picture: SUPPLIED “I go to the beach a lot with him - we’ll head down tonight and get in the water like the footballers

do, if it’s good enough for them it’s good enough for him,” Connell laughed.

IT’S ALREADY been a jam-packed and accolade-filled year for Dandenong Stingrays’ assistant coach Wayne Siekman. He led Vic Metro Youth Girls to a national championship victory as head coach and he also played a major part of Vic Country’s national under-18 success as one of the assistants, but there’s one more major assignment on the cards as he took charge of his beloved Stingrays in a TAC Cup clash on Sunday. Craig Black vacated the main seat just for the weekend and passed the reins to Siekman, who will earn his TAC Cup coaching debut against the Northern Knights. “It’s a great opportunity and shows how good the Stingrays’ program is,” Siekman said. “While it’s a great development program for the players, also a part of it is for the staff, that you get a chance to develop too.” Siekman thanked Black, Stingrays’ region manager Mark Wheeler and the rest of the Stingrays’ team for their vote of confidence in his coaching skills as he looked forward to taking on the biggest challenge yet in his burgeoning coaching career. “Craig and Wheels sat down at the start of the year and said I’d have an opportunity to coach a game this year,” Siekman said. “Coming in for one week with this opportunity - it’s big for Craig to be able to let me do it - and the most I want to get out of it is to prove that I can coach at this level. “From a team aspect we want to gain on the momentum we’ve earned against Murray. “Preston is a ground we haven’t got the best record at over the last five years and they’re a competitive side, so we’ll need to match their hardness at the footy and have a good four-quarter effort.” Dandenong head coach Craig Black thought it was great for Siekman to take the reins and it shows there’s plenty of room for growth in the TAC Cup even for the coaches. “He’ll coach from the box this weekend and it’s great for his development,” Black said. “He’s taking the whole week - from training to selection to give him the whole experience of being a head coach. “Wayne is doing his level-three coaching and it will help him and he’ll benefit from a week in the hot seat, taking the different stresses and angles when you’re the head coach. “Wayne wants to take that next step in his coaching and like the TAC Cup is a development league for players, we also see it as the same for coaches so it will be a good chance for him.” Siekman was in charge of Dandenong’s Round-14 Sunday foray against Northern Knights - for more on the Stingrays’ results click onto the Dandenong Journal website Monday morning.

EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE Division 1 - Round 14

Fogarty takes Bulls by the horns By JARROD POTTER MAYBE a little too well-rested after a weekend off, the Bulls took their sweet time finding top gear against North Ringwood. Sending shudders through the rest of the league, Noble Park returned to full strength on the weekend as it eventually ran out 29-point victor over the visiting Saints... but not after having to dig particularly deep to get there. Sam Monaghan returned to the line-up - after nearly two months on the sidelines - as did former TAC Cup player Kevin Kean to give even more firepower to a well-stoked arsenal down at Moodemere Street. A measly five behinds accounted for Noble Park’s first-quarter initiative - despite taking a monster advantage in stoppages 16-to-2 and the inside-50 count 15-to-8. Playing well within themselves and not linking up as prominently as North Ringwood had done through the first term - it took a few home truths seared into the group’s psyche at the quarter-time huddle to get the ball rolling.

“If we play a selfish brand of footy and play as individuals that’s what happens” Noble Park coach Mick Fogarty said pointing to the surprisingly lopsided scoreboard. “We came in and thought we’d have a real easy, bruise-free day. “If you want to have one of them, don’t expect to come off the ground and win the game. “If you want to be a professional, disciplined unit and get back to the way that we want to play, we’ll go ok - but it’s up to you guys which way it will go.” Fogarty’s pump-up inspired the brigade as Noble Park resumed its regular standards. While the behinds still flew thick and fast, Noble Park also slammed on the goals as Shayne Allan (6 goals) booted two in a minute in the second term to steal the lead at the main break, a position the home side would not give up again. Another four goals flew for the Bulls in the third, but the Saints didn’t lay down. Despite the lopsided appearance of the match-up - with Noble Park second and North Ring-

Noble Park scraped by - booting three last term goals to all but seal the deal and take its sixth win on the trot.

Kyle Martin, Brett Dore, Allan, Craig Anderson and Jackson Sketcher all starred in the win. The Bulls sit second in the top flight and have a two-game break on the chasers - Vermont and Rowville - ahead of a higher fancied clash against Blackburn away on Saturday.

FIGHTING off the frigid cold and a howling wind, St John’s put behind a squalid month of form by brushing aside finals’ contender Eltham Collegians. With a two-and-three record in the last month of Division-2 action, St John’s needed the win to continue its push for the VAFA double-chance. Battling fourth-ranked Eltham Collegians, the match only started to ramp up dramatically through the second half, as the wind became a major factor as the mercury dropped at Thomas Carroll Reserve. The third quarter belonged to the JOCs as the forward line started to heat up. With expert delivery from Rhys Dyker, Keith Ash and Manny Jakwot - who stormed through the midfield - it gave Tim Edwards (5 goals) and Aaron Abela (3 goals) plenty to pump their fists about slamming on eight-goalsone in a dominant third term for the JOCs. It was a one-sided performance aided by the great wind buffeting the Box Street end. Two goals against the typhoon kept the visitors’ hopes alive and despite staring down a 44-point deficit at the final change, the Eltham Collegians didn’t quit even as the scoreboard started to favour the home side heavily.

Every one of that eight-goal margin for St John’s would prove necessary as Eltham chipped away at that lead through the final term. St John’s didn’t throw everyone back immediately - trying to push for a few more goals to seal the deal - but eventually Ben McGee marshalled his best and brightest and sent them to defend the rapidly decreasing lead. Abela, Ash and Dyker shifted their focus and excelled down back - repelling countless Eltham inside-50s to hold onto an eight-point lead at the final siren. St John’s football manager Chris Horbury was pleased the JOCs turned around their indifferent form by knocking off a major player in the Division-2 finals’ race. “Third quarter won us the game eight goal third quarter - and we kicked straight today,” Horbury said. “We had to grind out the win and we did that… these are the games we have to win. “Lots of positives out of the game 18.5 - you’re going to win many games when you kick like that.” Horbury praised the aforementioned players as well as Carson Strobel through the centre. St John’s goes a game clear in second place and heads out to Albert Park on Saturday to face South Melbourne Districts.
