A CRANBOURNE man accused of looting a former library site while on bail for six commercial burglaries has been given another shot at bail. Mathew Leigh Horsfield, 34, applied for bail on Monday over fresh charges of burglary at the former Dandenong library site, where he allegedly stole 100 kilograms of copper tubing, a wheelie bin and two sets of keys. He was also charged with possession of ice, dangerous driving, driving without an interlock device, committing an indictable offence while on bail, and a suspected proceeds-ofcrime charge. Police alleged Horsfield made full admissions to entering the Stuart Street library through a roof cavity on 21 July and removing copper tubing used for the building’s fire service. About 7.30am workers at the library demolition site tried to block Horsfield’s rented van from driving out of a nearby car park. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told Horsfield tried to drive around the workers’ vehicle but crashed into it and caused “considerable damage” to both cars. Horsfield allegedly that day sold the copper tubing to unknown scrap metal dealers in Dandenong for $1100 cash - though the accused admitted to selling it for “roughly $450”. Detectives searched the unemployed accused’s home that day, seizing $15,000 worth of suspected stolen goods including dishwashers, washing machines, cooktops, building supplies and a CFA jacket, the court was told. They also seized $1100 cash - believed to be proceeds from selling

the copper, a small amount of methamphetamine as well as the keys and wheelie bin. Horsfield allegedly told police he couldn’t remember where most of the seized items came from. He said they were probably bought by him off the Gumtree online trading site, though he had no such receipts, he said. At the time Horsfield was on bail with a night curfew for six commercial burglaries and thefts, ice possession, drink-driving while driving without an interlock, and failing to appear on bail. Police alleged Horsfield’s ice addiction was costing him about $200 a day. Magistrate Barry Schultz said the bail application was line-ball, weighing up Horsfield’s ice-fuelled re-offending with available treatment on a CREDIT bail program. He said Horsfield’s driving offences were a significant public safety issue, and had committed a serious burglary two months after being granted bail. “In my view he has shown a degree of contempt for a previous granting of bail.” Mr Schultz also took into account that Horsfield was likely facing a short jail term with a community corrections order. He placed Horsfield on bail with a night curfew, thrice-weekly reporting to police, and a ban on driving and on drug-use. “If you come back (to court) you will not get bail a second time around.” Horsfield next appears at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 24 August.

Cartridges in pants By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A BERWICK ice-addict has been found by police with a sawn-off shotgun under his car seat and live cartridges in his underpants - a situation described by a judge as “chilling”. Dandenong-based magistrate Barry Schultz, in jailing Adam Rouget for 12 months, said the firearm used at close range was the “most potent deadly weapon”. “It’s a weapon to kill. “In the hands of someone on ice, it’s utterly chilling.” Rouget pleaded guilty to possessing the weapon and cartridges, as well as to offences including theft of a motor vehicle, stealing petrol, assault and breaching a community corrections order. Police had discovered the shotgun and cartridges when they pulled over a stolen Mitsubishi Magna in Narre

Warren in August last year. The driver told police that his mother had bought the car from “an Indian male in Burwood”, police prosecutor Senior Constable Fiona Davis told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday. Rouget was in the passenger seat, under which the shotgun was discovered during a police search. When asked by police why he had the weapon and cartridges, Rouget said he was being “enthusiastic”. “I wanted to see what it was like.” The court was told that some of Rouget’s offending occurred five weeks into a 12-month community corrections order. The CCO had been handed down in December 2013 for two counts of unlawful assault, possessing prohibited weapons such as long arms, theft of a motor vehicle, driving while suspended and retention of stolen goods.

Rouget had not completed any community work or “any condition” of the order, the court was told. Defence lawyer Rachel Hopkins said Rouget had shown a willingness to engage in a rehabilitation program to overcome his ice addiction. “We’re not shying away from the compliance not being acceptable but positive steps have been undertaken.” Ms Hopkins said Rouget’s drug use became an obvious issue in late 2013 when he lost his business. The court was told that Rouget tried to assault Hampton Park service-station attendants with a screwdriver after they confronted him over a suspected petrol drive-off in June 2014. During the altercation, he drove a silver Ford Territory at one of the attendants, stopping one metre short. He also pleaded guilty to stealing petrol from a Scoresby servo in De-

cember, and failing to return a hired van in August. The van was found abandoned in Mount Waverley the following month. He was also charged with assault and breaching an intervention order protecting his estranged wife at a Hallam servo in January. Magistrate Barry Schultz said it was a “tragic circumstance” that ice had destroyed Rouget’s life and his family relationships but was concerned by the combination of drugs and firearms. “When a man’s found with a sawnoff shotgun and two live cartridges in his underwear, you don’t have to be a Rhodes Scholar to join the dots.” He set a non-parole period of six months, including 84 days already spent remanded in custody. Rouget next appears on another matter at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 August.

Designs on a bright career for Cambodian By CASEY NEILL A CRANBOURNE North student has designed herself a bright career. Phalhong Mao last week won the Best Response to a Design Brief award at the Building Designers Association of Victoria (BDAV) Building Design Awards. TAFEs delivering the Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) nominated one outstanding student from each class to present a detailed project submission to a BDAV judging panel. “I did actually feel really excited and surprised to win this award,” Phalhong said. “I never expected that I could attend a competition like this. “This is because of my background as an international student from Cambodia. “I remember when I first arrived here about two and half years ago I was struggling to adapt with everything like geography, weather, culture, and the education itself. “The language - the technical terminologies - used and the study environment are very different to my country.” But she successfully designed additions to a commercial building in Smith Street, Collingwood. Phalhong had to work with strict requirements and complex restrictions and her pitch

won her the award. She’s just started her second semester of her second year of a Bachelor of Architectural Design at RMIT. She used the RMIT TAFE Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) course as a pathway to the degree. In the next five years Phalhong will study and work towards sitting exams to become a fully registered architect. “Design is everything and I have always enjoyed doing it since I was young,” she said. “I’ve tended to dream about designing my own dream house throughout the years that I have grown up. “I think, I feel and I engage to every moment within every space in my imagination. “Therefore, users’ experiences of a space within a building are always the heart of my design.” Phalhong has also started to incorporate environmental sustainable design (ESD) into her building designs to minimise energy usage and costs during the building’s lifespan. “Because I am from one of a developing country in Southeast Asia, I’ve actually always wanted to help design shelters inclusive of ESD design aspects for the homeless people, or the people who value this concept back home in my country,” she said.

A NARRE Warren teen has pleaded guilty to weapons charges over an alleged Anzac Day terror plot. Mehran Azami, 19, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to 19 counts of importing weapons and three other charges. He was remanded in custody to appear at the County Court on 22 October. The News reported in May that police charged Azami with importing more than 200 weapons - including AK-47 flick knives and tasers designed to look like iPhones - following predawn raids throughout Casey on 18 April. Following a tip-off from British police, a 200-strong joint state and federal police counter-terrorism team executed seven search warrants in Narre Warren, Hampton Park, Hallam and Eumemmerring as part of Operation Rising. Police alleged Azami was the weapons supplier for two other Casey teenagers charged following the raids 18-year-olds Harun Causevic and Sevdet Ramadan Besim. Causevic, of Hampton Park, was refused bail at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 8 May and detained along with Besim, of Hallam. They are due to return to court in August. Last week the News reported that a 15-year-old boy from Britain had pleaded guilty to one count of inciting another person to carry out an attack at a service in Australia. Authorities dropped a second charge of inciting terrorism overseas in relation to beheading a person in Australia. Police arrested the boy in April after intercepting encrypted conversation allegedly with an 18-year-old man in Australia. The boy, from Blackburn in northwest England, will be sentenced in September and cannot be named for legal reasons. Two other Narre Warren men, aged 18 and 19, were released without charge following the raids. Last month a 16-year-old girl from northern England was charged after she was implicated in the alleged terror plot. The girl from Manchester has been charged with collecting or making a record of information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing for an act of terrorism, or possessing a document or record containing information of that kind. The UK teen’s trial is scheduled to begin on 17 August in Manchester.

STOP THE VIOLENCE

Men(ding) their ways By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS HOW is it possible to deliver “success” at a men’s behaviour change program? LifeWorks Relationship Counselling and Education family violence co-ordinator Margaret Hodge says there is often more work to do for men after they attend the 26hour course over 13 weeks. She says men are advised to continue their ongoing behaviour change after the course, to work on factors such relationship and communication skills “We know through any behavioural change process, people may lapse and relapse. “It can take time for them to hold down a respectful relationship.” Ms Hodge instead sets a goal of ensuring the man’s partner feels safe in the relationship, that she has “options”. “Their is no clear definition of success; it’s more about how the partner says the man’s behaviour has changed and how safe she feels in the relationship.” During the course, the men’s partners and ex-partners are supported. They are offered support by a women’s contact worker to ensure that their safety is maintained and referral options explored if this is required. “It keeps the men accountable particularly if we hear about a breach of an intervention order or stalking behaviour,” Ms Hodge says. “It’s up to us to name that, bring that up with the man and to let the police know, or encourage the man to speak to police themselves – this

LifeWorks staff Sue Pratt and Margaret Hodge says there's no quick fix to changing men’s aggressive behaviour at home. 142397 is to demonstrate their accountability and responsibility.” Sue Pratt, a LifeWorks counselling and education manager, says there is a “power of the group” – a type of peer pressure – that helped lead men to take responsibility. At the group, there are male and female co-facilitators modelling respectful behaviour to one another. They also deliver information on how to keep the relationship “safe”, and about old-fashioned attitudes such as a misplaced sense of entitlement. The men are taught to regulate their emotions, improve their communication and relationship skills,

about the impact of aggression on others and blame-shifting. Her colleague Ms Hodge says men show varying attitudes towards their self-examination. “There’s a sense of ‘poor men’ – we’re the ones who have to go to court, who have to undergo intervention orders. “We have some men very open and willing to look at themselves. They are very aware of their behaviour and take responsibility - that is very encouraging to me. “The key to a man’s changing is willingness to make the change. It’s not to blame her all the time but his willingness to consider the impact

that his behaviour has on the family. “The common change comes from seeing the way they have been in the past hasn’t been helpful. They have to do something different.” Some men struggle to overcome being raised to believe the father was the dominant household figure. They are confronted when women pursue careers and regard themselves as equals. “They try to implement the same type of structure in their family,” Ms Hodge says. “It’s a huge change for men in their fifties and sixties. After many years of controlling the family, then their status in the family changes.”

Change need A FAMILY-violence group says men’s behaviour change programs are under-funded in the face of soaring numbers of family violence offenders in the south-east. The outer south-east and outer south metro regions have the longest waiting lists for behaviour change programs in the state – nearly 300 people waiting up to 11 months as of March. In a submission to the state Royal Commission into family violence, the group No to Violence argues for state funding for an extra 1000 program places. The increase would help match the rise in family violence incidents reported to police – up nearly 50 per cent in Casey since 2010, 25 per cent up in Greater Dandenong and 200 per cent in Cardinia. “Demand pressures will continue to escalate as family violence systems agencies – police, courts, child protection and corrections – continue to improve in their ability to identify, assess and respond to family violence,” No to Violence stated. Under current constraints, only a “very small” number of men on family violence intervention orders are directed to attend a men’s behaviour change program, No to Violence stated. It also argues for the program length to be doubled to six months. “For many men, the journey towards nonviolence is long and difficult, and, unfortunately, there are no ‘quick fixes’. “The work to invite resistant men towards attitudinal, behavioural and personal change is highly specialised and potentially risky if not done carefully.” Sue Pratt, of LifeWorks Relationship Counselling and Education, said magistrates ordering men to enrol was creating “extensive demand”. She said she would be surprised if the coming semester’s course wasn’t filled within three days. LifeWorks family violence co-ordinator Margaret Hodge said course members used to be predominantly voluntary but were now mostly required to attend.

Somyurek’s resignation ter had admonished Ms Paul after a meeting on 13 February by holding her chin in his hand and shaking it gently side-to-side, telling her to “calm down and put a filter on it”. The minister had been embarrassed by a comment Ms Paul made at that meeting, Mr Strong stated. Mr Somyurek’s conduct was found to be mainly “appropriate and professional” except for instances of him directing aggressive language, finger pointing and allegations of incompetence at Ms Paul. “Such conduct was occasional rather than systematic and was invariably associated with the Minister having to perform publicly, e.g. in parliament,” Mr Strong stated. On 20 May, Mr Somyurek summarily dismissed ministerial adviser Xavier Smith principally for intervening on behalf of Ms Paul after Mr Somyurek

spoke to her aggressively, the report found. Mr Somyurek’s evidence on these events was found to be “unfavourable”. “He has denied too much,” Mr Strong said. “He contends that evidence given by Ms Paul and Mr Smith is not merely or exaggerated but largely fabricated - especially in the case of Ms Paul. “I am comfortably satisfied this is not so.” The report found Ms Paul exhibited “occasional conscious exaggeration”, and Mr Smith showed an “element of unconscious exaggeration ... consistent with him being an enthusiastic advocate in his own cause”. “I am however satisfied that the evidence of each of them on critical issues was far more reliable than the evidence of the Minister.” Mr Strong said the incidents weren’t serious enough for reporting to the Victorian WorkCover Authority. In a statement, Mr Andrews said the report by Mr Strong made “deeply concerning” findings against Mr Somyurek. “The Minister’s behaviour, as outlined by Mr Strong, is unacceptable.” It found that the former minister “caused distress to staff and adversely affected their well-being”, Mr Andrews said.

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS SMALL Business, Innovation and Trade Minister Adem Somyurek has resigned after an inquiry dismissed his denials of intimidating his staff. On Tuesday, Mr Somyurek - who is a Dandenong-based South Eastern Metropolitan MP - said his resignation shouldn’t be taken as an admission of guilt over allegations by his chief-of-staff Dimity Paul. “I maintain my innocence,” Mr Somyurek said. He said the inquiry had not found him engaging in “abusive, threatening, intimidating, aggressive and inappropriate“ conduct that put his staff’s health and safety at risk. “I’m happy to report that (the) inquiry clears me of these allegations.” Mr Somyurek characterised the allegations as “payback“ from the union, the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association. He demanded the resignations of Deputy Premier James Merlino and the Premier’s chief-of-staff John McLindon. A report by former County Court judge Michael Strong stated Mr Somyurek had “diminished, to some degree, Ms Paul’s confidence in her personal safety while in the Minister’s presence” on one occasion. THE photo of Sam Aziz standing at the corner of Shrives and Centre roads (Gridlocked, News, 9 July) is just a publicity stunt. Where has he been the last few years? That intersection started to get bad after the Pound Road, Hallam, traffic lights were turned off. Why doesn’t the council get its head out of the sand and re-open Centre Road? By doing that it will take a lot of traffic away from Shrives Road. Just fix up the bridge over the creek and put a set of traffic lights at Hallam Road and a speed limit of 60-70 km/h. Problem solved. D Gardner, Hampton Park.

THE article Dividing Line Of Racism (News, 23 July) clearly demonstrates the wide abuses of local government and breaches of the Local Government Act 1989 and the Councillors' Code of Conduct by councillor Rosalie Crestani in her official role and participation as party member of the Rise Up Australia political party and Catch the Fire church ministry at the Reclaim Australia rally on 18 July 2015. It is understood that this religious political party opposes multiculturalism and that includes Aboriginal people and Islamics. In her official MC role she states: “Freedom of religion does not mean we accept the fundamental ideas of Islam, which do not allow for other religions. “So that is why Islam needs reforming or it needs to leave Australia.” Her statements at this politically rally and support of the Rise Up Australia political party opens her up to breaches of the Act, Councillors’ Code of Conduct and her lack of commitment to local government and the Casey constituents, so why is she falsely representing the ward of Four Oaks as a falsified councillor? It is now time the Minister for Local Government Natalie Hutchins MP and Premier Daniel Andrews intervened to officially clean up Casey council, its 11 elected Casey councillors and Casey management. The issues of this council supporting this racist rally clearly demonstrates the actions and breaches of this council both past and present. Interested Casey community members should forward their complaints to the State Minister for Local Government Natalie Hutchins MP on 8392 6131 and the Inspectorate on 9655 9555. Paul Richardson, Endeavour Hills.

Surrendering our culture MR REIHER, although not as old as your uncle, I too was born in the first half of the 20th century and well recall the bigotry of the time (Tolerate The Intolerant, News, 23 July).

However, in my view you have overlooked some very important differences - we are gradually surrendering our culture and have only ourselves to blame for the lack of integration by Muslim migrants. Catholics did have their own schools however they were open to all, which I understand is not the case with Muslim schools. We were not forced to eat food that was acceptable to Catholics, in fact I read recently where a function removed pork from a menu to avoid offending the Muslim attendees. I never once saw meat removed from a menu on a Friday to avoid upsetting the Catholics! Catholics did not advocate their own law. We did not ban the morning prayer or Christmas themes from our schools for fear of upsetting other religions. Catholics did not hold prayer meetings on the streets causing traffic congestion. Catholics did not say that a woman wearing a short skirt deserved rape. Imagine the outcry if the Catholics wanted (and received) their own prayer room at the MCG! Do you want me to go on? I disagree with our current level of migration intake not because of racism but due only to the fact that we cannot afford it and lack sufficient infrastructure. Eight years ago when in Sydney I noticed a couple of bedrolls in Belmore Park. There was an item on the TV recently indicating that there are now 50 tents housing the homeless at the park. It would be interesting to know how many refugees, if any, live there. If we cannot look after our own, what is going on? We have all seen the huge problems ex-

perienced in the UK and Europe; do we want that to happen here? Of course not, but it will as long as we pander to a minority. C Colson, Berwick.

Scapegoat failures IN THE Herald-Sun report Council Rates To Cut Deeper (25 July) Andrew Jefferson makes a valid point. Council rates need to be kept in check. The problem is can the Victorian Labor Government be trusted not to offset lower average rates increases by councils in future with increased taxes in other jurisdictions? What is the point if the Andrews Government is not going to subject all of its own taxes to the same CPI standard as council rates? For example, the Fire Services Property Levy has not been limited to changes in the CPI next financial year. Why? The Labor Government has decided to run a budget surplus and pass most of the costs of restoring the CFA/MFA budgets onto ratepayers. There are also alternatives to imposing council mergers on local communities. Bigger councils do not necessarily mean more effective checks and balances. In light of former Frankston state MP Geoff Shaw’s and now Federal Speaker Bronwyn Bishop’s extravagance, it seems likely that local government may really be a scapegoat for failures elsewhere. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

Pokies limit is ‘useless’

ROBOT’S GOT IT! WARATAH HORSE FENCING 10-90-5 50M*

$253.00 ROLL

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AN ANTI-POKIES academic says a $6 million-plus rise in annual pokie losses in Casey is a sign that pokie venues have “learnt to better exploit” their machines. Dr Charles Livingstone, a public-health lecturer at Monash University, also slammed the State Government’s imminent trial of voluntary pre-commitment gambling limits as “useless” for problem gamblers. According to government statistics, $119.4 million was lost in Casey poker machines in 2014-15 - more than $2 million a week. In neighbouring Greater Dandenong, losses rose by nearly $7 million to $117 million. Dr Livingstone said venues had learnt to “exploit” their machines better after assuming control when Tatts and Tabcorp were “shown the door” in 2012. “They are moving the machines to greater disadvantage - that’s where we’re seeing the greater concentration.” Despite regional caps on pokies numbers, Cranbourne - with five venues - has the greatest pokies concentration in Casey. Dr Livingstone said ATM withdrawal limits in venues were being circumvented by EFTPOS withdrawals.

Casey's pokie losses have taken a steep climb. 142415 He said it was possible for problem gamblers to draw out $200 a time without a limit on the number of transactions. “Under the new system, you could take out $200 a minute if you wanted to.” He said the State Government’s trial of voluntary precommitment in 14 venues was “as good as useless” at protecting problem gamblers. “Almost no one uses it,” he said. “If you do use it, all it does is tell you that you have reached your (gambling) limit without any other implications. “The gambler can over-ride it. It’s like a snooze button.” Dr Livingstone said mandatory pre-commitment which stopped gamblers from betting beyond their pre-determined daily limit, as well as reducing maximum bets to $1, would be more effective.

His suggested reforms were endorsed by Greens South East Metropolitan MP Nina Springle. “These figures are shocking and show the need for meaningful action,” Ms Springle said. “The government’s voluntary plan won’t ever work and they know it. “Their own budget papers show pokie machine revenue growing this financial year, which is a clear concession that their voluntary scheme won’t help gaming addicts.” Gaming Minister Jane Garrett said the voluntary scheme was “one of the tools” people could use to stay in control of their gambling. “The government shares the community’s concerns around the impact of gambling and electronic gaming machines. “We are committed to reducing gambling related harm in the community.”

TOORADIN’S famous fishy restaurant Wings and Fins took to the screen for the first episode of Channel Nine’s new culinary series, Hotplate on Tuesday 28 July. The seafood restaurant, located at the Tooradin airport, prides itself on its fresh Flinders Island crayfish. Now, head chef Lozz and owner Nola Delorenzo better known as Nols have also taken centre stage. Nols, a bank manager of 25 years turned restaurateur, has been dubbed ‘Australia’s fussiest eater’ but said filming the show was a ‘fantastic experience’. The exposure is already filling tables and leading to selfies with fans. “People were under the impression Wings and Fins had closed down, but even with the ads (for the TV show) we have gone from Saturday night bookings of 13 people to being booked out most weekends - but it hasn’t been all about the series, a lot of blood, sweat and tears over two and a half years has gone into it, Nols said. After managing the Caldermeade Farm Cafe for more than four years, Nols bought the seafood restaurant and set about building its reputation once more. “When I took over, Wings and Fins needed a lot of money spent on it in the kitchen and on the cray tanks and I didn’t have much left to spend on fixing up the front of house - But now

Nols dishes up some of her best Flinders Island crayfish to judges Tom Parker Bowles and chef Scott Pickett during Picture: CHANNEL NINE filming at Wings and Fins. 142360 (post filming) we’re looking pretty swish, she said. Labelled as a fussy, unadventurous eater, Nols stands by that brand and said she really did wish she had an airline sick bag at one meal. “We haven’t seen any episodes at all, but from the ads ‘Australia’s fussiest eater’ is me and I don’t have a problem with it. So many Aussies are going to relate to me because offal is awful! she laughed. She however admitted the reality TV show has made her try new delicacies. “If I don’t like it, I’m not going to eat it - I didn’t try the chicken heart but had the tiniest

little bit of the brains, because I had my head chef sitting next to me saying I had to try it! For the premiere of the show Nols cooked a roast dinner for her family and friends at home before sitting down to watch her very own big blue eyes flutter on the big screen. “My daughters think it’s great, they’re just sorry they didn’t get my blue eyes when they see them on the TV, she laughed. To snag a table at Wings and Fins call 5998 3600 and be sure to order a Nols simple palate special - she recommends the no frills Flinders Island crayfish and the Nolzy stuffed chicken breast.

Brigade fires up By CASEY NEILL CRANBOURNE Fire Brigade has 500 reasons to smile. Springhill Shopping Centre in Cranbourne last week presented a cheque for $500 to the crew. CFA District 8 brigade administrative support officer Jane Barber said it would spend the money on vehicle equipment to enhance its emergency response capabilities. Ms Barber said the Cranbourne brigade in April partnered with the shopping centre in a campaign encouraging people to change their smoke alarm batteries. They’ll return with a summer fire safety awareness stand and are currently pushing winter fire safety messages. “Most fatal fires occur in the home, which is why we are asking people to make sure they have a good understanding

of what causes fires, and how to prevent them,” Ms Barber said. “As well as regular things like getting your heater serviced or chimney cleaned, it’s also about also staying alert for warning signs in the home - that might be anything from unattended cooking to a laptop left on the bed.” Operations officer Greg Christison urged residents to plan and practice a home fire escape plan together with their family. “It’s vital that everyone in the family knows that they have to get out, stay out and call triple-zero,” he said. Ms Barber said a recruitment campaign for the southern Casey brigades - Clyde, Pearcedale, Devon Meadows, Tooradin, Pearcedale and Warneet - was about to begin. Recruitment includes all training. Call District 8 on 9767 1800 for more information.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST Jump in for the best ideas

Warning on training By CASEY NEILL FAKE job ads and dodgy doorknockers are swindling up to $30,000 each from south-east students. Some have racked up the debt without even attending a class, warned South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) CEO Andrew Simmons. “I’ve had conversations with at least a dozen, but I’d imagine the numbers would be higher,” he said. Mr Simmons said some registered training organisations (RTOs) were signing up unwitting students to get their hands on Federal Government funding. “There are some really good RTOs out there and we don’t want to tarnish everyone with the same brush,” he said. “But we’ve got RTOs or brokers who are literally doorknocking. “They’re promising laptops or tablets or gift cards as incentives for people to enrol. “We’ve got kids who are being sold courses and racking up huge financial debt through the Federal Government without even attending a class.” He said some RTOs were advertising job positions that didn’t exist. When applicants arrive they’re told they don’t have the qualification and are encouraged to sign up to complete the required training.

Andrew Simmons. “Training seekers need to be really aware of what they’re signing into and the consequences,” Mr Simmons said. “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” He said some swindled students were subsequently missing out on proper training because they couldn’t access any more government funding and couldn’t pay up-front. He urged training seekers to ask RTOs where their graduates worked before signing up. “If it’s an early learning centre, call and ask what they think of the RTO,” he said.

By CASEY NEILL YOUNG entrepreneurs can jump into a Berwick Shark Tank to pitch their best ideas. Casey Cardinia Region has invited 15 to 21-year-olds to share an idea that could change the world. Four successful applicants will take part in a shark tank-style event at the Tech-Innovation and Entrepreneurship Expo on Saturday 15 August. They’ll face local entrepreneurs who are eager to help them reach their goals and will receive publicity and mentoring from event sponsors. Simon Maselli from Pakenham business MetamorphCG helped to organise the contest. “Earlier this year we put together an ‘engaging local business’ event,” he said. “What we’ve all recognised is the business community, particularly in this region, isn’t as well engaged as say, a metropolitan region. “We got together four entrepreneurs from the region and they just got up and told their story. “The thing that we really wanted them to get across was that being an entrepreneur is tough and you can’t really do it on your own.

Mr Simmons said SELLEN surveyed school leavers for the State Government’s Track Connect project and received several reports about scams. He said they lodged complaints with the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) and Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and investigations were ongoing. Mr Simmons said the Review of Quality Assurance in Victoria’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) System released on 29 June also identified issues in the training sector. The State Government pledged to implement the report’s 19 recommendations and announced a $9 million blitz on lowquality training providers. Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert this was “a crucial first-step in ensuring Victoria’s training system is the best it can be by removing providers that provide poor or fraudulent outcomes which do not meet industry standards”. SELLEN is a community-managed network of south-east organisations interested in working to give 10 to 19-yearolds a better go at successfully moving through the education system to employment. It has about 250 members including schools, TAFEs, businesses, youth welfare agencies and individuals.

“Here in Australia we seem to be competing against each other rather than collaborating. “Instead of making the entire pie bigger, we’re more worried about our little slice of the pie.” Mr Maselli said about 20 people attended the event and organisers approached Casey Cardinia Region about running another one. The region suggested combining it with an expo during Casey Cardinia Business Week. “Through those discussions Shark Tank idea came up,” Mr Maselli said. “We really think that’s going to cap off a fantastic event.” Entrepreneurs need to submit a written application and have the option of adding a three to five minute video of their idea. Visit metabiz.com.au/blog/ shark-tank for more information. The Tech-Innovation and Entrepreneurship Expo will be held in the auditorium at the Chisholm Institute Berwick Campus, 25 Kangan Drive, Berwick, from 11am to 2pm. Visit tech-innovation.eventbrite.com.au by Monday 3 August to book. Phone Lydia Ropiha at the City of Casey on 9705 5125 for more information.

Choosing the right learning environment for your child is one of the biggest decisions parents make. Finding a school that provides a nurturing and supportive environment where students are taught at the rate they are ready to learn can be difficult. We encourage parents to participate in a tour of our school to judge for yourself if our school feels right for your child. The school is structured into learning communities where teachers work collaboratively to deliver education programs to students at their point of need. Our students have access to a variety of specialist programs including PE, Science, and the Arts. The school has excellent ICT resources which are used to enhance but not replace learning. At Cranbourne Primary School our students are encouraged and supported to be responsible learners and supportive members of the community. Many activities throughout the school are established to enhance positive relationships between students. Playground areas are open to all students which allows siblings and students across various ages to interact during recreation periods. We take pride in our approach to education which emphasises supporting the wellbeing of all students. Our students are encouraged to develop intrinsic PRIDE; Persistance, Responsibility, Independence, Discipline and Enthusiasm. Cheryl Van Deursen Principal

Hampton Park Secondary College in 2015, celebrates 29 years of providing dedicated educational services to our local community. This time in our history affords an opportunity to reflect upon our vision for the future and the goals that will take us there. We, at Hampton Park Secondary, remain very much committed to ensuring that our community has the best educational opportunities the College is able to provide. We remain a College that is very much in touch with our community and we see our students and their achievement as the core business that drives the College to consolidate our efforts and to continuously strive to improve our performance. Our connections in the local community are reflected by our college core values of Respect, Learning and Working Together. It is these values that motivate us to ensure that our curriculum offerings, classroom practice, the educational and career pathways on offer to our students are second to none. Indeed, our primary focus is on creating the environment, resources and subject offering that provide all students with an effective pathway in life on completing their schooling. We pride ourselves on being able to offer the broadest possible range of programs and experiences for our students, whether that be through sport, music, our broadly based VCE offerings, VCAL and our extensive VET programs. Over the course of the past 2 years, staff have worked on developing learning sequences that provide access to the curriculum for every student in every classroom in a supportive and safe classroom environment. I continue to be immensely proud of our students and of their achievements academically, in their sporting endeavors and in their commitment and contributions in community. Our College seeks to nurture and support our future community leaders as they grow, encouraging them to take on increasing responsibility at the College and in the wider community. We celebrate their achievements and successes with them, in the positions of leadership they hold on local council committees and state leadership bodies as well as their ability and talent evidenced in the Arts. This includes music and dance, as seen in our regular and successful participation in events such as the College’s ‘State of the Arts’ performance. As leaders of tomorrow, the spirit, commitment and talent of our students at Hampton Park Secondary College fill me with great hope for the future.

QUALITY ON DISPLAY FROM PAGE 1. AARON J Homes has been building quality homes for nine years and is proud of the fact that they have successfully completed about 400 homes to date. Being a local family builder and very much hands-on in all aspects of the business, the owners are well aware of what their clients need, want, expect and deserve in a quality product. Every display home built by Aaron J Homes is constructed with many of the same contractors that helped build the very first display home. These same contractors help build each client home to ensure that the quality and construction is maintained as per display standard - a true testament of the relationship the owners have with the trades. Being a multi-award winning builder, including major awards with the HIA and MBAV, buyers will have the confidence knowing a home will be completed on time and supported by the firm’s excellent customer service. Aaron J Homes has three distinct ranges within the product line with over 70 designs to choose from with different sizes and facades available. The Xpress range of homes, between 16 to 21 squares is suited more to the first home buyer or investor client with prices from as low as $128,900 to $149,900, while the Select range of homes is between 18 to 24 squares, is catered to the second or third home buyer with prices from $152,500 to $174,900. The Infinity range of homes is for the more astute buyer who like that little bit extra included and with larger home sizes available between 19 to 40 squares and prices from $173,200 to $317,900. The Xpress range comes with a

guaranteed build time of 16 weeks while the Select and Infinity range have average build times of about 18 to 20 weeks subject to house design and site conditions. If you can’t decide on a design that you like, Aaron J Homes is quite happy to customise one of their own designs to suit. Aaron J Homes is proud to include value plus inclusions at no extra charge that many other builders call extras. Standard inclusions such as feature plaster niches and voids, polished edge mirrors, semiframeless shower screens, kitchen overhead cupboards, stainless-steel appliances, window locks, Colorbond fascia and gutters are just a few and that is only the Xpress range let alone the Select and Infinity ranges which have much, much more included. There are seven homes currently on

display at Cranbourne East, Pakenham and Warragul showcasing the three ranges. Two exciting brand new displays are currently under construction in Warragul opening later this year and a further two more will soon commence in Clyde, due to open early next year, further enhancing the range available. Aaron J Homes is happy to build anywhere from Healesville to Rosebud, inner city to Warragul and even as far as Traralgon. There is a special ‘Price Rewind Sale’ on at the moment until the end of July with generous price reductions across the entire range of homes. For further information please visit a display centre, look them up on the web at aaronjhomes.com.au or contact 1300 aaron j

First impressions last. Winner 2014 HIA Victorian Display Home $250,001 – $300,000 MILAN 29

An Arden home is designed from the ground up to stand out from the crowd. We invite you to judge this for yourself. Start by stepping inside an Arden display. Your first impressions will be a feeling of space, light and proportion. Large picture windows and innovative sun courts bring in the sunshine. Spaces fit together intuitively. You can literally see the diference architect design makes in our Aspire range with a high level of luxury inclusions. We can even produce new layouts to suit your needs – it’s the ultimate in design flexibility. Alternatively, create an individual home of distinction, designed to your specifications with Bespoke by Arden Homes. Experience fine craftsmanship, attention to detail and personalised choice in a unique home built to order. We build a limited number of homes so that we can deliver a new level of personal service and to make a lasting impression because our company was created to provide exceptional value – today and tomorrow.

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD NO-ONE takes drugs to feel worse. This is how drug and alcohol expert Peter Wearne explained the internal reasoning of an addict. Mr Wearne, director of the state-wide Youth Support Advocacy Service (YSAS), was the keynote speaker at last week’s Edrington Ward forum where police officers, including Casey Inspector Paul Breen, councillors Susan Serey and mayor Mick Morland, and a small number of residents turned up to discuss the impacts of crime in their suburbs - with a focus on illicit drugs and family violence. After 39 years’ working in the illicit drug field, Mr Wearne has seen it all. “It might be a myth that the drug will make them better, but they will feel better,” he said. “So what do they want in that existential moment of taking the drug? “They are seeking pleasure, and they are seeking relief, and they are seeking separation from what is ailing them.” In the late ’90s, 99 per cent of all young people treated by YSAS suffered from heroin dependency. Now it’s less than 15 per cent. Mr Wearne said changing trends had seen alcohol, cannabis and ice become the three most common drugs for young people aged 10 to 25. Though while the drug of choice has changed, the effects remain similar, if not amplified, when it comes to ice. “When you take the drug, you empty the reservoir of chemicals that are in your brain so that when you go to use them tomorrow, they aren’t there,” Mr Wearne said. “So what do people who use this drug experience? They experience what appears to be forms of clinical depression and sometimes psychotic symptomology. “So if you use it more and more and more, it completely deregulates your ability to think and to act, to sleep, to eat, and to function. “And then what you think is, you feel terrible, what am I going to do? “Take more of the drug.”

Phone 9574 2593.

Casey Police Inspector Paul Breen convened the first of the ward forums this month. But, as Mr Wearne makes it clear, he wouldn’t have stayed in his line of work for almost four decades if he hadn’t seen hope. “People recover from drug misuse,” he said. “We see it every day of the week, otherwise, this is my 39th year doing this work. “If I didn’t think it was worthwhile, if people didn’t change, I just wouldn’t do it.” Mayor Mick Morland turned the forum’s attention to the problem of family violence. In the latest crime statistics, the City of Casey recorded the highest number of family violence incidents of any local government area - 3759 incidents in the last 12 months. Cr Morland said two women died from family violence every week. “One in three women in their life span will have family violence so one third of all women will suffer family violence,” he said. “And every three hours a woman is admitted to a hospital because of family violence.” The mayor then reflected on the tragic death of Phil Walsh, making a heart-felt point. “Now the football community came together, and if you watched all the football matches over a couple of weeks, you had half a million to a million people there who had a minute of silence for a person with family violence,” he said.

“And it was very touching, and as a football supporter I had a tear in my eye because you never want to see anyone pass away, and that was sad. “But every week, two women are killed. No-one stands up for a minute’s silence for those women.” Insp Breen will be convening the crime forums in each of Casey Council wards, beginning with Edrington. And while he noted his disappointment at the modest community turn out - roughly only 15 people - he said he wouldn’t be deterred from his attempts to reach out to residents. “I’m going to start going around to the wards and to all the community and start saying, ‘well, what are you guys doing about this?’” he said. “Because, at some stage, if it continues, it’s going to touch you. At some stage you’re going to know someone, (maybe someone) very close to you, that’s going to be harmed by this behaviour.” The next forum will be for the Four Oaks Ward, held at Southern Cross Primary School, 1-21 David Collins Drive, Endeavour Hills, from 7pm to 9pm. The other events will be held on 30 September for Springfield, 21 October for River Gum, 25 November for Mayfield and 2 December for Balla Balla. For more information, visit www.casey.vic.gov.au.

New horizon for Vikings By JARROD POTTER LYNDHURST Vikings are no more. A change of venue - from Endeavour Hills’ Barry Simon Reserve to the newly created Carlisle Park in Cranbourne has also brought a change of names. The Vikings will now sail under the Carlisle Park banner as they begin their 2015-16 West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) campaign later this year. The name change was put to the club recently at and the verdict was to start afresh at their new home. Carlisle Park Vikings Cricket Club president Aaron Straughair said with the blessing of club founders the current club members decided it was time to adapt to the new surroundings. “We spoke to people who started the club and asked their opinions and they were happy if we changed it,” Straughair said. “Put it up to the club a couple of weeks ago, had a couple of people who were iffy on it but mostly everyone was pretty

Shannon Marum and his Lyndhurst Vikings’ cohort will take their swashbuckling ways to Carlisle Park as part of the newly renamed club. 128830 Picture: JARROD POTTER happy with it.” “All pretty happy with it - so we thought it would be easier to get into the community if we changed the name to Carlisle Park. “Setting up a meeting with the primary school next door to form a partnership and get more involved in the community especially starting juniors as we believe we can attract more with the new name.” It brings to an end the Vikings’ time in Endeavour Hills - having played at Charles Green Reserve, Gleneagles Secondary College and finally Barry Simon Reserve for the

last decade or so. The club also announced the signing of new head coach Peter Neville - who arrives at the club with a wealth of indoor and outdoor cricketing experience, having previously been involved with Baxter Cricket Club. Carlisle Park Vikings will host two Junior Registration Days Friday 21 August and 28 August from 430-730pm at Cranbourne Indoors Sport Centre. Wells digs deep in TAC Cup debut By JARROD POTTER

Cranbourne North cricketers Reilly Mark, left, and Kevin Seth, right, excelled at the junior Picture: JARROD POTTER indoor cricket championships. 141956

Indoors pair bowled over By JARROD POTTER CRANBOURNE North is jam-packed full of cricket talent with Kevin Seth and Reilly Mark rising to the peak of junior indoor cricket. Seth, 13, and Mark, 12, live less than a kilometre from each other and recently shared Victorian duties at the Junior Indoor Cricket Championships. Battling the rest of Australia, the Victorian under-13s were able to muscle their way past the likes of South Australia, Western Australia and the dreaded rivals New South Wales to take the championship. “We went really well and finished on top,” Seth said. “We lost the first game, but we won every single game after that.

“It was great - we met a lot of new people, lots of friends from new teams and we bonded - our team especially - we were kind of like a family and (it) was good. For his all-round efforts at the championships, Seth was named in the Australian indoor under-13 side and Mark also received a call-up to the Australian A side to head up to Brisbane later this year. The hard hitters love their indoor cricket - preferring the high-action variant over other winter sports. “It’s fast paced, you can play three games in a day - half the time of an outdoor game - the ball is always live so you have to be on top of your feet,” Mark said. YouTube went into a melt-

down with the vision of the boys’ Victorian teammate Jake Fraser-McGurk taking a double-hat trick, but the Cranbourne tandem impressed in their own more subtle way. Seth made 48 in a four-over stint with his batting partner and in one innings took four-for-negative-nine while Mark had an exceptional plus-20 performance. As a bottom ager Mark will get another chance to pull on the Victorian colours at the under-13 level while Seth will kick on to the under-15s after his Australian duties conclude. The duo will feature in the World Indoor Cricket Federation World Junior Series - heading up to Brisbane in September to clash in a quadrangular tournament between Australia, Australia A, New Zealand and South Africa.

“WHAT lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” This humble mantra, tattooed across the debuting Dandenong defender’s ribs, could not better define Brenton Wells. Belying his 172cm, 65kg frame - Wells, 17, relished his first chance to step up to the TAC Cup level on Sunday and brought his brand of hard-edged football to the Stingrays. After impressing for Narre Warren in his South East Football League senior debut last week, Wells received his next call up on Tuesday night as the Stingrays told him to get ready for TAC Cup football. He had to wait for his chance until round 14, but once the Stingrays’ 23rd man sprung off the bench onto Preston City Oval, there was nothing to stop the dogged defender latching onto the Knights’ forwards. Taking to the half-back line like it was any other outing in his football career, and not the first time making the step up to the TAC Cup, Wells slammed into anyone that crossed his path as one of a fleet of hardtackling Stingrays. His tackling negated a lot of Northern forays and his rebounding efforts were just as promising. While spectators scurried for shelter when the skies opened, the rain and hail only seemed to power up Wells’ endeavours as he fought through to set up re-

After copping the traditional Powerade shower as the Stingrays sung the song, Wells was thrilled to make his way in the premier junior league and was keen to keep his place in the line-up. “Walking in there I was pretty nervous, but as the game opened up it turned back to a local normal game,” Wells said. “It was good - a lot quicker and they were a fair bit harder bodies, but it was great to get in there.” It’s been a sensational 2015 football season for the defensive dynamo, who loved the close knit nature of the Stingrays and everything this year has had to offer. “Just the spirit - the team,

everyone is so close, and such a good atmosphere out there - can’t even explain it,” Wells said. “I’m loving this year - this is just pretty much the starter for me which is great, so hopefully it keeps going.” Dandenong’s stand-in coach Wayne Siekman said the Narre natural made the most of the opportunity and showed he was more than capable at the next level. “Seeing Wellsy have his first game - he had a few nerves, but came out and did a couple of really good things and he’s hard and tough at the footy,” Siekman said. Wells will hope to keep his place in the side when Dandenong faces Sandringham on Sunday morning at Frankston’s VFL Oval.

Brad Szalek goes for a short flight over the Dragons in Casey's final BIG V home-and-away Picture: JARROD POTTER season victory. 142258

Know thy enemy Adrian Buller, John Simpson, Daniel Walton and new coach Tim Dodgson, right, are aiming Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT for big things at the Cougars this coming season. 142414

Dodgson at the helm By RUSSELL BENNETT CLYDE has unfinished business in the West Gippsland Cricket Association’s (WGCA) District division this upcoming season. After finishing on top of the ladder with 11 wins from their 14 games, the Cougars were knocked out in the semifinals at their home ground at the hands of the fourth-placed side - and the eventual premiers - Cranbourne Meadows. And this season, the Cougars are spurred on to convert their home-and-away form into the ultimate finals success and move up into the WGCA’s top flight for 2016/17. Leading the way will be new coach Tim Dodgson, who lives just over the road in the Pasadena estate. Dodgson, 40, replaces allrounder Kyle Brooke who will remain at the club in a playing capacity but has taken the step back from the coaching role he’s held for three years, in part due to the birth of new son Louis. Family comes first, and rightfully so.

Dodgson, meanwhile, is a Life Member of the East Malvern Cricket Club where he played for 20 years. In recent years, he has been involved at VTCA club Carnegie where he served as senior coach, chairman of selectors and assistant coach. Joining him from Carnegie is gifted top order wicketkeeper batsman Daniel Walton, who scored 353 runs across all grades last season including three half-centuries; and Matt Bayliss - a left-arm medium bowler who took 20 wickets in the 2014-'15 campaign. They join an already impressive Cougars line-up that includes the likes of Brooke, and gun all-rounder John Simpson who last season scored 454 runs with a top score of 104, and took 14 wickets at just 18.3. “We looked at where we ended up last year and, with Brookesy (Brooke) having a new baby that gave us an opportunity to get a new coach in,” Simpson said. “We decided that it’d be a good opportunity for a change of voice and a change of direction to look outside the club.

“That was our initial thought for this year - a change of voice. We’ve been progressing under Brookesy over the past three years but we need to take that next step up into Premier.” Dodgson can’t wait to work with not only Brooke and Simpson, but everyone in the Cougars ranks. He views this season as a clean slate for players seeking an opportunity to convert promising lower grade form into a chance in Clyde’s first XI. “My best cricket days are definitely behind me from a playing point of view, but I see myself as a leader of people - that’s what I do in my job,” Dodgson said. “I look at it that if I can get a good club that had good results last year to have some of the boys in the lower XIs push those higher up for spots, and move a few blokes around that are accustomed to being a first XI player - If I can get 5-10 per cent improvement out of each person then I think that’ll push us a long way to our goal of winning the flag.”

By JARROD POTTER BIG V - YOUTH LEAGUE TWO MEN QUALIFYING FINAL OVERCOMING its toughest opponent this year in a final, the Cavaliers had to travel to face Warrandyte in enemy territory, but it didn’t faze the Cranbourne-based basketball side which claimed a 76-64 triumph. Needing to roll its biggest competitor for the YL2M title in a qualifying final, Casey pushed past Warrandyte through the middle terms to leave the home crowd stunned. Casey coach Phil Thomas put the victory down to negating the Venom’s outside game while his talls crashed through the key to decimate any hope of a Warrandyte fight-back. “Really good night - the boys did really well,” Thomas said. “I think we just did a better job of dealing with their three-point shooting better. “Being the bigger side we used our height a bit more to our advantage. “Ryan Sinclair had 10 points in the first quarter, which was a really good start for us as well.” After conceding two regular season clashes to the Venom, the psychological advantage of knocking off the top seed one week into the finals has given the Casey men a great deal of confidence heading into their preliminary final on Saturday night against Mornington. “We probably could end up playing them again in the grand final in two weeks - we now

know we can beat them,” Thomas said. “We didn’t beat them during the regular season - and whoever we match up with next week, we’ve had a win over so there’s some good confidence going in.” Thomas praised the efforts of Aaron Bower (19 points) and Sam Pike (9 points, 9 rebounds) for their offensive efforts as well as Pike’s steadfast guarding of the Venom’s basket. Thomas’ Cavaliers will play the first-of-two finals at The Fortress on Saturday night against Mornington. The Cavaliers senior men host Geelong in an elimination final on Saturday from 8pm at home after wrapping up the BIG V Division-1 Watson Conference minor premiership with a 63-48 win over Camberwell. In a dogged clash on Saturday night, Casey struggled to shake off Camberwell until the dying minutes as both sides struggled to up their shooting percentage. Bevan Camilleri (12 points) knocked down a crucial pair of threes to blow open the game while the Cavaliers were best served by Brad Szalek (14 points), Matt Witherden (9 points, 15 rebounds) and Brent Hobba (6 points, 16 rebounds). The 17-5 record is Casey’s best in its BIG V history and will serve as a launching pad for the side’s inaugural Division-1 finals’ campaign. Unfortunately for the ladies the season came to a premature end as neither North East nor Keysborough could get the points to enable the Cavaliers to sneak into the finals.

Magpies swoop on it By JARROD POTTER VFL - ROUND 15 A STRONG start wasn’t sustained by Casey Scorpions as Collingwood waltzed through to a 23-point win at its VFL home. Despite dictating the tempo throughout the first term, aided by a powerful breeze rushing over the Victoria Park grandstand, Casey could not find the bigger uprights to squander its first opportunity with the wind. End-to-end, circle work, lane work – whatever you call the practice in training was all that defined the first term between the sides as both half-back lines held strongly and repelled. Casey’s nine-point lead would be the highlight of a fairly dogged day in the city as the Magpies started to soar from then on. A quarter-time pep talk from Melbourne coach Paul Roos – en route to coach the Demons against St Kilda later that afternoon – wasn’t enough to rouse the faltering line-up as Casey continued to stall and fade out of the VFL clash. Casey could not emulate the run-and-carry that defined its first term onslaught as Collingwood chipped away at the lead before building a comfortable lead in the conditions. Collingwood’s AFL experienced heads Ben Reid (3 goals) and Clinton Young (2 goals) pushed past the Scorpions in tandem with a few more AFL-ready bodies – Sam Dwyer and Paul Seedsman. For the Scorpions, not even a late flourish outscoring the Magpies in the final term – was enough to sneak back into the game. Mark Jamar battled manfully against

VWFL - DIVISION 1 SOUTH-EAST women’s football continued to shine brightly even through the dull weather as Cranbourne and Endeavour Hills continued their winning streaks. Another clean slate gave Cranbourne a helpful percentage boost and maintained its top of the ladder billing in VWFL Division 1. Kick by kick, goal by goal, the Eagles soared away with the win as Tess McEvoy (2 goals) showed off her forward chops to go with her midfield domination. McEvoy had elite support from the likes of Ash Fennell, Kirsten McLeod, Lauren Hutchinson and Brittany Wood. Cranbourne hosts Melbourne University at Casey Fields from 2pm on Sunday. Endeavour Hills had one of the toughest battles of the season, taking on high flying Deer Park. De-

spite notching their lowest score of the season, the Falcons were still able to take the points and extend the winning streak out to 12. With goals as hard to find as diamonds, the Falcons had to toil in the trenches to eventually run away with the 28-point win, set up with three goals after the main break. The win was set up by the elite efforts of Jess Wallace and Rebecca Sherry, while mopping up across the field, Georgia Punton and Catherine Rogers providing a strong presence for the Falcons as well as the emergence of ruck sensation Sarah Bodycomb. Endeavour Hills has two rounds left to complete the perfect home-and-away season, starting this weekend against Bayswater at home from 12pm. DIVISION 3 In Division-3 action Cranbourne drew with St Kilda 1.2 (8) to 1.2 (8) while Endeavour Hills lost to Knox 1.1 (7) to 7.3 (45).

White ball a a new generation fights against violence By JARROD POTTER BERWICK blue, Pakenham maroon and Narre North teal… the colours that more than define the South East Juniors competition week-toweek. But there will be one more colour that will stand out most of all this round. White will be predominantly shown across the league on Friday and Sunday as junior football clubs take a stand against violence towards women. Around 50 captains and coaches from around the league united on Friday in a show of support for the White Ribbon campaign – which encourages men of all ages to pledge a promise to “never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence towards women”. The players and coaches were encouraged to take the White Ribbon pledge back to their clubs and spread the message to ensure this scourge of our community doesn’t take root in the next generation. Games across the weekend will be played with a white ball and players are encouraged to take the pledge as part of their game-day activities.

South East Juniors club development officer Nathan Phillips believed the message needs to be active at younger ages in the football community to really enhance the cause. “I think the key for this round is instilling in the young men and women’s minds that each and every person can make a difference,” Phillips said. “Instead of just expecting someone else to do it… if you can do it you can create that awareness and set the culture at your own club. “As a league we’re trying to put it into their minds a lot earlier – rather than at 18 or 19 (years) when they’re already men, we want them to know at a younger age what is right and wrong a lot earlier. “It’s great to get awareness out into the local community and see that so many of our young players were willing to do it… to make sure that football is not just football and it takes a back seat to the key message of this round.” The message is sinking in, as SEJ captains from under-13s to under-17s learned its necessary to work together – just like on the footy field - to stop this generational crisis continuing in their lifetimes.

The South East Juniors football community stood together on Friday (24 July) to stamp out the scourge of violence towards women. 142018 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS “Learning to create awareness – that together as a community, if we work together we can put an end to it,” Cranbourne captain Jesse said.

South East Juniors White Ribbon Day will be Sunday 2 August. For more information, visit the league website www.southeastjuniors.com.au.

Rising ’Rays are turning heads By JARROD POTTER EIGHT Dandenong Stingrays have been hand-picked by AFL recruiters to test at the prestigious AFL National Draft Combine later this year. Needing at least five AFL clubs to show an interest to get a nomination, the Stingrays stars are part of the 75 best prospects for this year’s draft. The combine is the final scouting tool available to AFL clubs ahead of October’s national draft and the Stingrays eight will be assessed based on endurance, speed, jumping capability, kicking, handballing and psychometric evaluations. Beaconsfield Football Club in particular is extremely well represented with 2014 Casey Cardinia premiership winning pair Brandon White and Thomas Jok earning selection on the back of exceptional work in the Vic

Country, TAC Cup and schoolboys systems. The other two Eagles set to soar at the combine are national champions Tommy Glen and Bailey Rice. Three All Australians – Keiran Collins, Jacob Weitering and ruckman Gach Nyuon – were part of the final 75 as well as fellow national championships winner Kurt Mutimer. Dandenong Stingrays region manager Mark Wheeler said it was proof positive of the Stingrays’ exceptional list to get eight members into this select group. “As a club we’re extremely happy,” Wheeler said. “To have eight out of one club – we always thought we had a strong year and always thought really deep list and it’s proving that. “They’ve all done the work and

now it’s just about finishing it off.” Gippsland Power had five make the short-list with Warragul twins Ben and Harry McKay selected for their impressive forward-line performances alongside potential Sydney Swans father-son selection Josh Dunkley. The combine’s list has yet to be finalised with further players able to be added throughout the remainder of the season. The testing runs from 8-11 October. AFL 2015 NATIONAL DRAFT COMBINE LIST DANDENONG STINGRAYS: Kieran Collins, Tommy Glen, Thomas Jok, Kurt Mutimer, Gach Nyuon, Bailey Rice, Jacob Weitering, Brandon White. GIPPSLAND POWER: Nash Holmes, Ben McKay, Sam Skinner, Harry McKay, Josh Dunkley.

Shootout for the top dog By DAVID NAGEL IF CRANBOURNE wants a direct passage through to the South East Football Netball League grand final it must defeat Berwick in Saturday’s match of the day at Casey Fields. The winner of this intriguing contest will take top spot, and become a short-priced favourite to grab the minor premiership at the end of the home-and-away season. With that comes the luxury of a rest in the first weekend of finals -and fresh legs in September is something that has cost the Eagles dearly over the last three years. There’s still seven weeks to play out

before grand final day, but you get the feeling we’ll be looking back on this contest as one of the most defining of the season. The Eagles warmed up for the big clash with an 81-point victory over ROC at Starling Road. Champion full-forward Marc Holt kicked six goals, and Curtis Barker and Michael Theodoridis three, while Brandon Osborne, Troy Tharle and Chace Struth were important fourquarter contributors. A mesmerising 20-minute burst from Berwick half-forward Tim Gunn led the Wickers to a 34-point victory over Beaconsfield at Edwin Flack Reserve.

Saturday’s Battle of the Creek looked like going down to the wire at half time, the Wickers leading by a kick - 4.5 to 3.5 - a margin that was wiped away with an early third-quarter goal to Beaconsfield’s Troy McDermott. But Gunn went bang, with goals at the 7, 11, 13, 19 and 25 minute marks, before trumping them all with a leftfoot snap that pierced the middle as the three-quarter time siren sounded. “I’ve seen on-ballers have quarters like that, but for a half-forward flanker to come out and play that sort of quarter, that’s the best I’ve seen at local level,” Berwick coach Rhys Nisbet said. Gunn finished the day with seven,

while Jimmy Phillips, who battled manfully against Meyer, was joined by Lucas Jellyman-Turner, Tom Brennan and Ash Smith on the Wickers’ best players list. Jordan Stewart was sensational for the Eagles, keeping Berwick dangerman Mitch Johnson goalless for the afternoon. Doveton has kept its finals hopes alive with a come-from-behind 34-point victory over Pakenham at Toomuc Reserve. The fifth-placed Doves trailed at the first three changes, but kicked 6.6 to 0.2 in the final term to give them a four-point buffer over the Lions in sixth place.

Simon Black kicked three, while Andrew Humphries and Shannon Henwood were dominant performers around the ground. Narre Warren full-forward Kerem Baskaya kicked his biggest bag for the season, a nine-goal haul that led the Magpies to a rampaging 127-point victory over Tooradin at Westernport Oval. Jackson Parker and George Angelopoulos kicked three each for the Magpies, who need to win their last four games to grab hold of a double chance. It might all come down to their last game of the season against Beaconsfield. SEFNL SCOREBOARD

Beacy’s got the goods - have no doubt By DAVID NAGEL BEACONSFIELD is good enough to play in this year’s grand final according to coach Amy Heath, who was impressed with her side’s 4337 victory over Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve. And don’t for one minute think that she’s just shooting from the hip, because Amy has some real substance to her argument. “I don’t like excuses but we have been injury stricken this year, hence our form hasn’t been great,” Amy said of her team, which broke a three-game losing streak on the weekend. “But we’re building and we’ll have a full team on the court by the time finals come around. Narre (Warren) looks to be the team to beat but a grand final spot is what we’re playing for, and who knows what can happen from there.” Beacy took control of the contest against Berwick in the second quarter, with Andi Dickson and Bi-

anca Sanzaro combining beautifully in a 15-goal-to-eight onslaught. The Eagles then maintained their composure, and their lead, to bank a crucial four points. Kylie Baker in wing defence was also terrific for the Eagles on Saturday, while Olivia Macente and Jodie Cranston had good games for Berwick. Cranbourne coach Simon O’Shanassy was very proud of his side after its come-from-behind eight-goal victory 42-34 over ROC at Starling Road. The Eagles went in without Amy-Grace Paulsen, and lost fellow goal-shooter Monalisa Groom to injury in the second quarter, but still found a way to grab the four points. The Eagles were down at half time, but the move of regular wing-attack Natalie Sparks into the goal ring made all the difference after the break. “We still had Jess (O’Hanlon) in there, but for Nat to come in and

Jess O’Hanlon had to stand tall for Cranbourne against ROC on the weekend after injuries took a hold of the Eagles’ line-up. 141899 Picture: ROB CAREW shoot 11 goals in the third quarter was huge for us,” O’Shanassy said. Tara Cecil and Alanah Hardy were once again fantastic in defence for the Eagles.

Pakenham has basically assured itself of a double-chance in September after a gritty and determined three-goal victory 45-42 over Doveton at Toomuc Reserve. Two of the league’s most potent goal-shooters, Pakenham’s Rachel Priestly and Doveton’s Rahni Samason, settled down into a shootout in the first quarter, their skills admirable in the windy conditions. But ironically it was Pakenham’s defence that made the difference in the end, with Michelle Briggs, Olivia Hunt and Taylor Beck keeping the Doves to their lowest score since round seven. Premiership-favourite Narre Warren has continued its unbeaten run this season with a comprehensive 39-goal victory over Tooradin at Westernport. The Magpies are really looking strong at the moment; Tayla Shannon (88 percent) and Chloe Phillips (85 percent) shot the ball beautifully while Tracey Dell and Kara Hargreaves were impenetrable down back.
