Sam’s extra mile By JOLENE OGLE HIS shoes were made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do when Noosa local Sam Clark sets off from Newcastle for Sydney on Saturday 1 August to raise much-needed funds for sick kids. Sam, who is a tattoo artist on Noosa North Shore, will walk the more than 160km trek in honour of his 18-month-old niece Saskia Howell who was diagnosed with Kabuki syndrome, which affects about one in 90,000 Australian children. Saksia, along with her family, will be waiting for Sam at the end of the walk, which is expected to take between ten and 14 days to complete. The walk has been named Saskia’s Little Hearts Project, and Sam said he was inspired to do the walk after running in the bush everyday on Noosa North Shore. “I wanted to do something wild, something different,” he said. Sam and his support crew set out to raise $15,000 to support the Humpty Dumpty Foundation that has helped Saskia by supplying a pacemaker and supplies lifesaving medical equipment for sick kids throughout Australia. With only days to go before setting off, the team have already raised over $14,000. Sam’s wife Polly said she got cold shivers every time she thought about the massive task Sam had chosen to undertake to help sick kids. “He’s doing so much for kids around Australia, espe-
cially for Saskia who is such a sick little girl. “It’s just incredible,” she said. Polly said Saskia underwent open heart surgery late last week but things didn’t go to plan. “But, she’s staying strong,” she said. “She had six holes in her heart and deformed valves, so it was a big operation and they needed to put in a pacemaker, which the Humpty Dumpty Foundation provided.” Sam and Polly said local Noosa businesses had been generous in supporting the walk and fund-raising efforts with Village Bicycle owners Trevor Aylward and Luke Czajkowski chipping in over $1100 from a special fundraising night on Friday 24 July. Trevor said the fund-raiser was a great way to help out his friends as well as support the community that supported him when he opened Village Bicycle. A fellow tattoo studio owner in Perth also held a special day to raise funds and donated $6900 to Saskia’s Little Hearts Project, along with special support from Amo Espresso, Bounce Protein Balls and Captain Sip Sops Barber Shop, while Spy Optics, One Planet and Kathmandu have supplied Sam with his walking and hiking gear. Sam said he admitted it was going to be a tough walk and scary sleeping in the bush alone at night, but he couldn’t wait to get started and support such a worthy cause.

live today
THE local Lions and Rotary clubs of Noosa Shire have been servicing the community for many years, helping local groups through funding and taking on some major projects in the community. Recently, all groups had a change-over ceremony to thank the previous president and welcome on board the president for the 2015/’16 term. The Rotary Club of Noosa Daybreak held their change-over dinner at the Noosa Springs Golf Resort in June where previous president Gill Timpany welcomed Jeff Williams on board as the president for the coming year. The Rotary Club of Noosa Daybreak is best known for their annual Bookfest held in the first weekend of May, where over 30,000 books are offered for sale to raise much-needed funds for the club to help support local community groups. The Rotary Club of Noosa Heads also held their change-over dinner at the Noosa Springs Golf Resort, where the club thanked retiring president Gerald Victor as new president Chris Shoobert stepped up to the top job. Mr Shoobert was awarded a Sapphire Paul Harris Fellowship on the night and encouraged local community groups to apply to the club for support for projects helping children and young people in

the areas of health, support groups and facilities. Clubs can register their project on the club’s website www.rotarynoosaheads.org.au by 30 August. The Rotary Club of Cooroy welcomed Linda Morrell as their new president at their change over celebration at the River Deck restaurant on 27 June. Linda takes over from Chris Durie who stepped down after a fantastic year of fund-raising and Julie-Anne Turner was also welcomed as a new member. The Rotary Club of Eumundi celebrated their first year of operations on 3 July and welcomed their first president Les Godwin as the continuing president for the next financial year. The Rotary Club of Eumundi has 26 members who say they enjoy the club’s vibrancy, innovation and progressiveness. The Lions Clubs of the Noosa Shire also celebrated the changing of the guard with the Tewantin Noosa Lions Club, who will next year celebrate 50 years of service to the community, welcoming new president Di Cooke. With over 55 members, the Tewantin Noosa Lions Club is one of the biggest in the state and has been responsible for some great community projects including the Lions Park in Noosaville and

The Noosa Heads Lions club, founded in 1974, provides a pleasant and fun outlet for communityminded people and donated over $20,000 throughout the 2014/’15 financial year. The club thanked previous
president Irene Winduss for her hard work and welcomed Joan Kane as the new president for the coming year. The Pomona Cooroy Lions, who have just staged the 37th annual King of the Mountain festival, also welcomed a new president in David Trigger, with Warren Gavin stepping down from the top role.
Great front page speaks the truth
revitup
WHAT a great front page of last week’s Noosa Today, with State Shadow Treasurer John-Paul Langbroek stating the obvious in his summation of the proposed new development of Noosa Civic. Mr Langbroek rammed home a few points. “One of the things we want to see in Noosa is job opportunities for young kids.” He went on to say: “you like the character of Noosa as it is and don’t want to be a Gold Coast”. But his best advice was: “People love what Noosa is but they also want opportunities for the future for their kids and to be diversified”. He fully supports some sort of development, as you can’t close off to the world. It appears local member Glen Elmes is on-side with his parliamentary colleague, especially in the civic centre saying that adding another supermarket wasn’t the answer as it won’t bring in the much-needed cash, however investigating a way of putting a new tenant mix could be the answer. Apparently, the much-needed feedback in public discussion so far has been negative. So whether it’s the Civic or any new development, this question is going to raise its hand,

as we all know there is a certain percentage of the population who want to remain precious and only drink coffee in Hastings Street. John-Paul speaks from experience, coming from the Gold Coast, once numerous shires, now a thriving city. There was enormous angst when the Goldie united but take away the high rise, same as here, people in Southport didn’t want to be seen in Currumbin and so on. Now it’s the home of the NRL Titans, AFL Suns, entertainment centre, international airport, major events and the up-coming Commonwealth Games. It’ll be interesting to see where Mr Elmes treads over the time leading up to the next State Election. Change doesn’t only happen in politics, the turn of the page in lifesaving is swamping our two clubs for the better. Noosa already under the guidance of Darren Mercer, and his team daughter Jordan, Rhys
Burrows, Lachie Lansdown and now joined by Nutri-Grain partners Jack Moyes and Kristy Higgison. Both are outstanding competitors and loyal club members. Not to be out-done, Sunshine Beach has scored the coup of the season with Olympic Gold medallist Clint Robinson joining their coaching staff. I can only imagine the influence the 38 time Lifesaving Gold Medal Winner will have on Cooper Willams, Electra Outram and Nick Sloman for starters. I go back to Minister Langbroek’s opening statement in suggesting strongly, everything we do must have a futuristic result. I congratulate the management of both clubs in working and putting in place a pathway for the future. Most have read of late the blow up of Mooloolaba Surf club, especially the push to high level coaching and bringing in outsiders. Yes, they got plenty of exposure, but the high profile athlete came from outside the area and understandably chasing the dollar. This will be an exciting season for both clubs. Until next time.

Warren’s wings are clipped By JOLENE OGLE LABOR candidate for Wide Bay Lucy Stanton has slammed Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss over the cost of chartered flights between Canberra and Brisbane last year. In a statement to the media, Ms Stanton said “Warren Truss as Deputy PM has trumped Bronwyn Bishop with outrageous spending of taxpayer dollars”. Ms Stanton’s comments refer to $21,570 Mr Truss spent on chartered travel between Canberra and Brisbane on 13 and 14 May 2014. In her statement, Ms Stanton said Mr Truss claimed more than $20,000 in expenses to attend a conservative breakfast fund-raiser where he spoke of taking steps to ensure the Government is living within its means and to rein in the age of entitlement. Ms Stanton said she believed Mr Truss, who is the Federal
Member for Wide Bay, scheduled the breakfast event knowing Parliament sat during budget week. “Then he decided to charter a flight for $21,570 to ferry him in luxurious style to the fund-raiser rather than take a commercial flight,” she said. A spokesperson for the Deputy Prime Minister said Mr Truss is “assiduous” in the spending of his Parliamentary entitlements and confirmed no commercial flights were available to meet “Mr Truss’s ministerial duties on 13 and 14 May 2014.” “In fact, on 13 May Mr Truss was required to be present in Parliament for the handing down of the 2014 Federal Budget,” the spokesperson said. “Mr Truss had official commitments in Canberra until about 9pm that evening and was then required to travel to Brisbane to meet another budget-related commitment early the following morning (14 May).
INBRIEF Alleged shooting POLICE are appealing for information on an alleged shooting at a Tewantin home on Monday (27 July) about 2pm. Police said initial investigations suggested a shot was fired in Hilton Terrace around 2pm. No-one was injured in the incident. A black Holden Commodore wagon with Queensland registration 729SXK was seen in the area at the time and was also reportedly seen in Helensvale on the Gold Coast around 5.30pm on the same night. Police said reports of a drive-by shooting were unsubstantiated and were appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information that could help assist the investigation. Anyone with information or who heard anything on Hilton Terrace on Monday 27 July around 2pm can phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss. “Parliament was sitting on 14 May, and Mr Truss was required back in Canberra by midday to fulfil ministerial responsibilities. “Again, timely commercial flights were not available, and Mr
Truss legitimately used his charter budget to meet his Parliamentary obligations. This travel was undertaken in strict accordance with the minister’s duties and responsibilities.”
Sisters book in whole new chapter MONDAY will mark the start of a new chapter for locally owned book store, The River Read, as the much-loved store moves to a new location. Sisters and owners Lucinda Morley and Natalie Webster have run The River Read for six of its 18 years and said the local business on Thomas Street, Noosaville, had come to be loved for its cosy nooks and crannies but felt it was time for a move. “We are really excited about our new home on the river,” Lucinda said. “Local retailers know the pressures facing businesses who rent in the Noosa area. A business that has been in the same location for 18 years still has to renegotiate leases, and we have made the decision to move based on a number of factors, most importantly that the new space is very well suited
to the needs of our shop and our customers.” Customers won’t have to travel far to snuggle into one of The River Read’s corners or to enjoy a cuppa in the courtyard, with the new location only 50m up the road. “We love the riverfront complex. It has a fantastic mix of food and retail, from restaurants and cafés to clothing, homewares and flowers, and our new neighbours have been extremely welcoming,” Lucinda said. The sisters say although they are not going very far, it is still a big job, but they are assuring customers the new space will still have the same cosy atmosphere that The River Read is known for. “Books and coffee are our passion and are such a great fit together, so we will continue with all of that and more,” Lucinda
Sisters and owners Lucinda Morley and Natalie Webster said it’s time to move. said. “We are also adding some beautiful new card and stationery ranges”. The River Read’s new location boasts a beautiful new riverfront courtyard to sit and enjoy a coffee with the stunning vista of our
Noosa River. The new shop will be open for business from Monday 3 August, with some disruptions to business the weekend prior, however they will be open for coffee as usual every day throughout the move.
LOCAL police are growing frustrated at motorbike riders who refuse to dress properly when going for a ride. Noosa Heads officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said he was tired of seeing “stupid” riders wearing no more than thongs, shorts and a singlet on a bike. “It is so easy to come off your bike, and when you’re dressed like that, there’s nothing between you and the road,” he said. “Only yesterday (Monday 27 July), I saw a female on a scooter in her bikini and a male wearing just shorts and thongs.” Sen Sgt McReight said while it was not against the law to wear thongs while riding, it was against common sense. “It doesn’t take much to be safe. Invest in a good pair of boots and gloves, because your hands and your feet are the first things you use to break your fall,” he said. “A jacket with Kevlar or leather is best, but good denim will offer some protection too.”
Brace for traffic blitz LOCAL police have warned of a severe traffic blitz in August, promising to shut down main roads and target drug and drink drivers. Sen Sgt McReight said the police wouldn't reveal the dates of the operation but said David Low Way and the Bruce Highway were two of the main roads that would be targeted. “We’re finding more people are driving with drugs in their system than alcohol,” he said. “This traffic blitz will involve serious shut downs of roads, and we will target affected drivers.” The announcement comes after nine people were charged with drink driving in Noosa over the weekend. Sen Sgt McReight said nine offenders was a high number considering the season, and there was nothing in particular on over the weekend. Five out of the nine offenders were caught in the early morning period between 2am5am.

Wilde Mountain conquest NEW Zealand’s Hayden Wilde conquered Mt Cooroora on Sunday taking out top honours at the 37th annual Pomona King of the Mountain festival in a field of 110 competitors. The 17-year-old flew over for the event, and said he might even return next year to contest his first place win and see if he can conquer the gruelling mountain race once again. Wilde finished with a time of 25min 42sec, with 21-year-old New Zealand farmer Shay Williamson a close second with a time of 25min 56sec and Noosa’s own Bryce Hegarty in at third place. In the women’s division, Cooroy teacher Leslie Saunders, 44, took out the top place with a time of 33min 15sec, followed by 15-yearold Dominica Fitzsiman with 35min 20sec and Angela Haynes in at third place. Mt Cooroora proved a punishing race track with two men winched to safety by the RACQ Care Flight helicopter after a man in his fifties suffered a fractured ankle and a man in his twenties dislocated his knee. Cooroy and Pomona Lions hosted the event, and event organiser Heather Manders said it was a lot of hard work for the team of volunteers but they were all very proud of the outcome. “When you see it all come together, it’s pretty impressive,” she said. “We had a great team of volunteers to help and the Lions worked hard to bring the whole day together.”

The rescue to remember Between the Ron Lane’s
flags people
RON LANE
IT was just after midnight, 2 January 2009. The phone next to Warrick Redwood’s bed rang and his club mate and jet boat driver Bill Twigger told him: “Grab your gear and let’s go. "We got word there is trouble somewhere in the mouth of the Noosa Bar. A tinny with a bloke hanging on.” This was not unusual because both men were on call out as members of a little known team of volunteers called the After Hours Response Group. All highly trained and experienced lifesavers, they could be called upon to answer distress calls away from normal surf club patrol hours. At this year's annual general meeting these two lifesavers were elevated to the highest order - life membership of the Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club. For these two club mates, William Twigger and Warrick Redwood, it seemed only fitting that this honour should be given to both men at the same time because their life had run a parallel that is somewhat unbelievable. “It is just incredible,” said Bill Twigger. "We are both Sydney boys from Cronulla. “Grew up and lived within five kilometres of each other. We had mixed with mutual friends but we never seemed to cross paths. “Even Lyn, my wife, who I met while attending Endeavour High School and was to become my childhood sweetheart, grew up in that area.” Bill left high school in 1981 and started work as a computer operator and programmer, eventually moving into computer engineering. By the mid ’80s Bill and Lyn’s re-
lationship had become serious and in October of 1989 they married. For Bill his career as a lifesaver commenced in 1975 when he joined the Elouera club in Sydney as a cadet. “When I joined I was just a big skinny kid, so when the seniors were training in the IRBs they would grab me and use me as a patient. “It was this that started my love of IRBs. After I got my bronze I became serious about training in surf rescue vehicles.” It was during this time that he met up with the legendary Harry Brown. “I guess you could say that I was lucky. “Coming in contact with Harry was great. To us he was an absolute god in the IRBs. “In those days the IRBs were nick-named the Rubber Duckies and some referred to Harry as the Father of the Rubber Duckies. “Some of the older brigade had their doubts about the duckies in big surf but Harry soon proved them wrong.” Because it was a new concept some people were still very sceptical so everything had to be done properly. “At the end of patrols the boats had to be fully stripped down checked and the reassembled ready for the next day’s patrol. “For a young bloke just starting out the training couldn’t be better.” Following the birth of their first child, a daughter named Brideen, Bill took a break from the surf club for two years after which he returned to resume his duties at Elouera. Then in 1996 the family moved to Noosa and after settling in Bill joined the Sunshine Beach club. It was then that his career in lifesaving really took off. This, plus two additions to the family, a son Jordan and another daughter Megan, kept this compact family busy but very happy. And all the kids joined dad in the club. By 1998 Bill was not only doing
beach patrols but was also appointed club IRB captain, a position he was to hold for the next three seasons. “Very interesting. Our patrols covered Alexandria Bay and this is real IRB country. “A lonely, desolate place with big surf and at times very dangerous.” Then in 2001 Bill was elevated to the positions of club and patrol captain, holding both till 2005. After stepping down as club captain he was to serve a further 10 years as patrol captain. Adding to his club service he held office as Chief Training Officer for four years, deputy president one year, and in 2010/11 season one year as club president. In what can only be described as a great example of time management, Bill also became involved in the Jet Boat Rescue Service as a driver and tied in with this was the job of after hours response co-ordinator. In the jet boat service Bill was right at home, getting his crew certificate, driver’s, instructor’s and examiners. Now after 16 years of service he is still active. Strange as it may seem it was during the hours of beach patrol that Bill and Warrick finally met. “To think that we grew up in the same neighbourhood, had mutual friends, but didn’t meet till we were patrolling Sunshine Beach in Queensland seems crazy,” Warrick said. Born in Cronulla in 1963, Warrick developed a love of the surf when he started surfing, snorkelling and spearfishing at his local beach. “Would you believe that on leaving high school my first job was as an ice cream tester for Streets Ice Cream in Turrella Sydney.” Deciding to further his education he entered the university at Wollongong studying physical education and health. “During my years at uni I did my bronze medallion at the Wollongong club.
“This came about because the bronze was a part of my uni course. “After getting it and liking what I saw of club life, I decided to join. Also during my time at uni I met a lovely lady, Joannah, who was to become my wife.” After finishing his studies Warrick took a job teaching at a school in Campbelltown, Sydney. “Boy, was that an experience. “To put it mildly it was very, very cosmopolitan. However, I realise now that that plus my physical education it was to be of great benefit when I joined the Nipper movement.” Moving to Noosa in 1990 Warrick became involved in the Sunshine Beach club by accident. “We had started going to the club for meals where I met a member of the club called Glen Puckeridge. “Glen, known to everyone as Puck, found out that I was a clubbie from Sydney so suggested that I join and that was the start of everything.” In the 2000/01 season Warrick became a Nippers co-ordinator and this involvement was to continue for the next 14 years. “Down through the years I have held several positions, some for a few years.” These remarks, indeed, covered a very active and remarkable service to his club - supporter club chairman for six years, Patrol Captain for 10 years and club president for five years, and patrol member for 14 years. And these achievements are just to name a few. But he has not been alone because the whole Redwood family is heavily involved. Wife Joannah is a highly respected coach and his children, Taylor, 23, Molly, 21, Brock, 16, and Jonty, 14, have all won titles competing at both state and national level. However there is one thing that really bonds these two Cronulla boys. Despite having worked together for years at patrol and management
level making hard decisions, it was without a doubt that phone call that came in the middle of the night. “For both of us that was the night that it all came together,” said Bill, “all those hours of training and experience.” “We launched the jet boat and moved out. We spoke to the coast guard then moved into Laguna Bay about 500 meters out from the Noosa Surf club. “It was then we found the tinney with a bloke hanging on. We radioed the coast guard and they came across. “We were told his mate had been swept away and also he couldn’t swim. “The coast guard started firing flairs so we moved right away towards North Shore as we believed that was where the currents would take him,” said Warrick, “and things didn’t look good.” “We had moved about two kilometres north, it was pitch black, and all we had was a big Dolphin hand torch because in those days, in jet boats, night work was in its infancy so we really couldn’t see much. “We were about one or two kilometres out so we stopped the engines and just listened. “I started to call out. Then we thought we heard a voice, moved on and found him. “He was just about finished. He had a piece of rubber buffeting under his chin that kept his face out of the water. “We moved in close but he couldn’t climb on board - he was totally finished. “Then Warrick did an incredible thing. He is not a big bloke but he somehow got his arms under the guy’s arm pits threw himself backwards and got him on board. He was safe, it was all over.” Billy Twigger said: “It was a soul searching experience, one you never forget.” Neither should we. Bill Twigger and Warrick Redwood are two of Our People.

The students are currently on summer holidays in their home country and have chosen to spend their time experiencing school in Australia. The children are very excited to be a part of their Sunshine classrooms and have all chosen Western names for their stay. Luffy (Yuhan Wang) and Jessie (Zexi Huang) are very excited to be at Sunshine Beach State School. They both like everything about this school. “It is a very big school,” Luffy said.
“I like morning tea. In China it is small. In Australia my mum can make me morning tea.” Jerry (Ruijie Wu) says he loves the canteen at Sunshine Beach especially the milk. Maggie (Ximing Liu) thinks the school is very big. “It is great to have James in our class. We play sport together at lunchtimes,” said Max Enright, one of their classmates. As part of their education the students will also receive weekly support from a specialist teacher to develop understanding and help with language and cultural challenges. “The students are learning about our native animals, some famous Australian landmarks and indigenous culture. They are very keen to learn,” said Ms Jenkins, their English teacher.
Classroom teacher Megan Day said the two Chinese students in her class, Jessie and Luffy, were a delight to teach and the class absolutely adored having them. Sunshine Beach State School has many students with an international background, and is proud to be the only accredited International school on the northern end. The school also has a history of hosting many international students. In the coming weeks, Sunshine Beach State School will play host to students from Japan, Switzerland and Germany. The school has a strong commitment to its international program and looks forward to welcoming many other students in the future.
JUST over 600 children’s books are on their way to the children of Tarawa, Kiribati, with help from The Kindness Club. After reading about a Pomona man’s plan to send books to children overseas, The Kindness Club promptly contacted Doug McDonald and offered their assistance. Doug, who had recently visited the Kauma School in Tarawa and recognised their lack of educational resources, welcomed The Kindness Club’s offer of help. The children began their book drive by sorting through their own books and donating books they no longer needed or felt the children of Tarawa needed more. The families of Cooroy Outside School Hours Care were very supportive of the children’s project and donated many boxes of books. Inspiring Cooroy organisers, Richard Hansen and Priska Clarke, kindly offered their support by asking attendees of their most recent event to bring along new and used books for The Kindness Club’s project. Cooroy Supa IGA, Sauer’s and Cooroy Mitre 10 kindly donated the materials the children used to make centrepieces for the Inspiring Cooroy event. The centrepieces were then sold on the night raising $290 to put towards the cost of posting the books to the children in Tarawa.
Zarah and Lola of the Kindness Club helped collect over 600 books. The Kindness Club would like to thank their family and friends, Doug McDonald, Inspiring Cooroy and everyone who donated books. Together we have made a big difference in the lives of our new friends across the ocean. The children of The Kindness Club are excited by the support they receive from the
community and look forward to sharing more of their endeavours to spread kindness. Anyone who would like to contact The Kindness Club and share stories of kindness, they would love to hear from you. They can be contacted at Cooroy Outside School Hours Care on cooroy_oshc@bigpond.com

Works were done IN COMMENTING on the Wallace Park flying-foxes, your letter writer of (Noosa Today, 16 July) has suggested that council has not completed vegetation works as promised. Council completed vegetation works along the northern pathway of Wallace Park in July 2014 in response to concerns about the flyingfox camp. This work included routine tree maintenance and the trimming of vegetation overhanging the public pathway where flyingfoxes had been roosting. Council is considering further vegetation works along the western side of Wallace Park behind Lewis Street, where flying foxes sometimes roost close to neighbouring residents. The site is currently waterlogged and any works would not be able to proceed until the site dries out. A proposal is before council to engage experts to develop a Flying-Fox Management Plan for Wallace Park. Expert advice may include, for example, the best location of buffers and other measures that may help reduce the impact of flying-foxes on local residents.
Council would need to consult with key stakeholders who have an interest in Wallace Park prior to any further vegetation works. It is not unusual for flying-foxes to camp in the Noosa area. Individual flying-foxes are continually changing between camps, so it is unlikely any attempts at dispersal will succeed. It is unknown how long flying-foxes will remain in numbers at Wallace Park. Flying-fox numbers have declined recently at this site. Peter Milne, Principal Environment Officer, Noosa Council.
River of dreams THANKS for your coverage of the Noosa River Forum, an important community event in which the Noosa Parks Association was pleased to participate. NPA is committed to seeing a recovery of the abundance and diversity of the marine habitat and marine life of the Noosa River and its lakes system. Indeed, this is one of our most important policies, a point NPA vice-president Michael Gloster made at the forum. The large audience clearly approved of Dr Gloster’s view that one of the highest priorities in relation to the river is to bring back the fish and to ensure that action taken to improve aquatic biodiversity is science-based. NPA is happy to collaborate with any program designed to ensure that the river continues to be such a wonderful natural asset to our community. Ingrid Jackson, Honorary Secretary, Noosa Parks Association.
Up in the air A BIG thumbs up to the volunteers of the Pomona King of the Mountain and the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club for putting on such an awesome day. We had a stack of fun! THANKYOU to the kind person who left a pretty flower under the wiper of my car. Your small token was greatly appreciated as I had just left the doctor’s with bad news. I’ll be sure to pass on the kind gesture.
A BIG thumbs down to the person who threw a drink bottle from their car while driving along Eumundi Noosa Road on Sunday. Who litters anymore?

SUNSHINE Coast Airport has a history of passenger growth forecasts they never seem to achieve. These forecasts are fanciful because the airport competes with Brisbane, a private sector operation only about 100 kilometres away and having huge economies of scale. However, these fanciful projections inform the revaluations of the airports assets on council’s books. The book value of community equity has supposedly increased $40 million since the last audited balance sheet was published in 2000'01. Since then council’s airport books are, inexplicably, unaudited and not published in annual reports. Community equity (ie. your money and mine) has supposedly grown to $63 million in 2013-'14 as the airport is being put on your credit card and mine. This horse has now bolted to the Coordinator-General with a proposal to expand this non-performing commercial business requiring further ratepayer investment of about $400 million. Unsubstantiated; unmanaged; uneconomic; unaudited. How has it come to this? Mayor and councillors, please explain. Peter Brown, Secretary, Coolum Residents Association.
Shop 'til you drop I AGREE with the letter written by Mark and Jan Ferris of Cooroy (Noosa Today, 22 July) regarding the proposal of the expansion of the existing shopping centre at Noosa Civic. I agree. It would be good for the Noosa residents. Thelma Williams, Tewantin.
THANKS to David Rawson for this photo of a tawny frogmouth taken just on dusk at his grandparents’ home in Doonan. “They just sat there and let me get real close and did not fly away after,” he said. If you have a photo of Noosa’s wildlife or landscape, we would love to see it. Send your photos to newsdesk@noosatoday.net.au.
Not good enough THE Noosa and Hinterland Greens, covering both Noosa Shire and the Wide Bay area, are pleased to have received feedback on whether or not political parties should field nominated candidates for our local council. Colin Bond’s letter indicates that the unions have contributed over $500,000 to the Australian Greens campaign funds. These unions represent large numbers of workers. They do not receive favours from the Greens. The unions support the Greens because the of party’s policies, particularly in relation to their stance on being opposed to the importation of unqualified and underpaid workers on 457 visas. This is occurring due to the major parties’ eagerness to sign away Australian jobs to foreign workers in currently being negotiated free trade agreements. The Greens have a policy of not accepting corporate donations, which at both federal and state level has been shown to corrupt political decision-making. Some affect our local district. The withdrawal of $3 million in funding from the Noosa Hospital has seen a dramatic reduction in public beds here and the shuffling of public patients to the hard to access Kawana Hospital. A hospital built with taxpayers’ money, paid for by the State Government, and run by Ramsay Health. Simple procedures like colonoscopies and skin cancer treatments require uninsured people to travel to a hospital that is over an hour away, and impossible for non-drivers to access by public transport. We have to be able to do much better than this. Joy Ringrose, Pomona.
Lack of knowledge WHEN people write in these papers against expansion of the Noosa Civic and use the present empty shops as an excuse, I am afraid it just shows their lack of knowledge. You only need to visit many of the larger shopping centres in Queensland to see how they soon fill places. At present the Civic is too small to encourage better diversity. As both a retired city architect and building surveyor in places where large shopping centres have flourished, and on the proj-

Graphic detail THE University of the Sunshine Coast is applauded for its decision to withdraw sponsorship of the Noosa Long Weekend’s climate change debate held at The J last Saturday. Dr Carter presented two graphical diagrams to support a flawed contention that human induced greenhouse gas emissions are not a major contributor to global warming and increasing extreme climate events. According to Dr Carter, planet earth has not entered the anthropological geologic era. He claimed a null hypothesis correlation analysis of temperature and CO2 atmospheric concentration data proves his contention. It was bad enough to provide a public platform for a former academic claiming statistical analysis expertise; even worse was having The J volunteers distribute these graphs at the end of the session. Dr Richard Koerner, Coolum Beach.

ect management team of both small and large centres, I can assure you the larger centres very quickly fill, with few or no empty places. The reason is people then have more choice and it makes a visit worthwhile. One of the last centres I was involved in had a Woolworths, Big W, Coles, Kmart and Target plus many big name outlets, as well as many little speciality shops. When I visited the city a few years ago I found it had almost doubled, and every shop thriving. Business does bring business, with both short-term and long-term jobs. An Aldi store would be great, just look how popular the one in Noosaville has become. Bring on the expansion. Two or three levels would do no harm and would allow more parking and the tree huggers to stay. I also note Mr Elmes seems to be at odds with his political party, when they point out that “a population cap is not realistic” and “you cannot stop people from coming. People want opportunities for the future for both now and their kids so you must have some sort of development somewhere”, or die. Ian Lawson, Noosa.

THE Pomona Railway Station Gallery is proud to exhibit Fine Lines. This exhibition is presented by local artists Alice Normand and Dominique Fontana, and the official opening will be held on Saturday 8 August at 11am. Alice is a well-known local potter who makes garden art and wall plaques. She is known for colourful and exquisite glazes, and in this exhibition, she is transposing classical Japanese wood block prints and stained glass patterns into clay and glaze. Dominique will be presenting her exceptional pen and ink drawings of Hinterland landmarks, which will be easily recognised by most Noosa and Hinterland residents. All are welcome to meet the artists at the opening where light refreshments will be served. Fine Lines will be exhibiting until 10 September at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery, 10 Station Street, Pomona. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and from 10am to 2pm on Saturday.
THE Friends of Noosaville Library (FoNL) quarterly book sale raised over $300 on Saturday 25 July taking the volunteer group’s fundraising total to $3000 this year from book sales alone. Avid reader Anne Connelly took advantage of the sale to stock up on novels, and said she was extremely happy with her purchases. “These should keep me quiet for quite a long time,” she said.“Thank God,” quipped her husband Peter, who was making a stack of his own. Money raised by the group contribute to library services such as tech equipment and workshops as well as other items like book supports for frail readers, bean bags and tables and chairs for the children’s section. Good quality novels, reference books, magazines and children’s books were at bargain prices with hardcovers priced at $2 and soft covers at $1. The next book sale will be held on 31 October between 9am and noon at the Noosaville Library.

Up for the Challenge and for the full parade THE Noosa District State High School student and teacher teams that competed in the Kokoda Challenge had their efforts acknowledged and celebrated at a full school parade on Monday morning (27 July). Duke of Edinburgh teacher and Kokoda Challenge team leader Dean McMaster, who spoke at the parade, addressed some of the hardships experienced during the student teams’ 22 hours. “Gabbie had a wonky knee, Ryan had enough at 4am and Rhea was looking really pasty and pale at one stage, but they all pulled through and helped each other, finishing the 96 kilometres in a great time,” Mr McMaster said. Mr McMaster has set the bar high for next year’s Kokoda Challenge, with the aim to complete the 96 kilometres in under 20 hours. “Those of you who are thinking about participating next year will have to be prepared to train hard in the lead-up and run in some sections of the course,” Mr McMaster said. Noosa District State High School is very proud of the students and teachers who participated in the event, and in so doing raised over $3000 for at-risk Queensland teenagers who are supported through the Kokoda Youth Foundation.

TORQUETODAY
Prado makes sense TOYOTA Prado 4WD received a major upgrade in 2013 and has just enjoyed a pleasant week in one of the significantly improved 4WDs from the company that dominates this field in Australia. The Prado 4WD is enjoyable to drive both onroad and off, though, as is usually the case there was a lot more of the former than the latter. Toyota’s stylists have made major changes to Prado’s looks inside and out. The designers have improved seating access at the same time. Toyota recognised the limitations of access to the third row of seats, so increased the forward folding angle of the second row seats for easier entry and exit to the third row. The revised Prado’s interior has a audio panel above the 7-inch full colour screen. There’s satellite navigation on VX and Kakadu. Prado GX gets manual air-conditioning while the others have dual-zone air-conditioning. Prado GX comes standard as a five-seater, with the option of seven seats. The extra seats come standard in the Prado GX and Prado VX as well as in the topline Kakadu. The latest Toyota Prado
has a bolder front, with a grille that really stands out because the five bars are embedded on the top of the bumper. Sounds like an expensive job if something does get damaged. However, the new grille and restyled headlamps sit higher on the vehicle and are further from harm’s way when off-road. Toyota Prado VX and Kakadu get LED headlights and daytime running lights. Their tail light clusters have also been revised. The Prado GX and GXL models get 17-inch, six-spoke alloy wheels while VX and Kakadu get 18-inch, 12-spoke alloys. Trailer sway control assists the driver if a towed vehicle becomes unsettled by crosswinds, sharp change of direction or bumpy roads. The Kakadu has a so-
phisticated 4WD system with off-road settings for: rock; mogul; loose rock; mud and sand, and (new for this upgrade) rock and dirt. The latter gives more traction control on slippery rocks when ascending hills. VX and Kakadu models use a different Australiandeveloped suspension system to the GX and GXL, with an emphasis in the former on providing more comfort than the working models. This new model has an improved version of the technology which benefits handling stability and ride comfort with smoother front-rear weight transfer during cornering. The system enables the stabiliser bars to loosen for off-road work giving longer wheel articulation and then tightens the bars for smoother turning on-road.
The Prado Kakadu also has a forward looking wide-angle camera with images showing on the 7-inch screen that gives a frontof-bonnet view of what’s ahead. Prado has seven airbags, stability and traction control, an emergency brake signal that automatically flashes the stop lights to warn other motorists and a rear view camera. Engines remain the same with 202 kW of power from the 4.0-litre petrol V6, or a 127 kW 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel with a useful 410 Nm of torque over a good spread of revs. Unusually in these times, Toyota Prado GX and GXL come with a sixspeed manual transmission, a five-speed sequential auto is an option. Prado VX and Kakadu come standard with the automatic transmission. Prado has been a huge seller for Toyota Australia for many years. It provides and unusual combination of off-road ability with reasonable on-road comfort. Meaning it’s way ahead of the typical crossover when it comes to providing transport for the adventurous Aussie families. Drop in and see the team at John Madill Toyota at the Autopark, Noosaville, or phone 5470 0750.
Speed review for roads NOOSA Council along with the Department of Transport and Main Road are currently reviewing the speed limits of local roads. Last week, Noosa Today reported the joint committee had decided to reduce the speed limit of Eumundi Noosa Road from 100km/h to 80km/, but the traffic advisory committee and speed management committee will continue to investigate nine other roads with various complaints from local residents. Among the roads up for investigation as outlined in a report presented to the infrastructure and services committee on Tuesday 21 July, is Middle Creek Road, Federal, where there have been several fatal accidents in the past three years including a head-on collision between a motorbike and a car on 26 November 2014 in which a 55-year-old man died. The report states that council has received a request to reduce the speed limit from 80km/h to 60km/h, noting the road is usually a quiet country road but is unmarked with blind corners. Blackall Mountain Range Road is also under investigation due to concerns from residents over speeding and requests to lower the speed limit. In the report, the DTMR said the entire road needed a full speed limit review as there were areas of inconsistency. Other roads under investigation include Mill Street and
Ten local roads are under review by a joint speed management committee. Summit Road, Pomona, with requests to review or upgrade the intersection, Moorhen Place, Noosaville, with a request to review the speed limit and signage, as well as Hill Street, Pomona, with a request for a possible intersection redesign with Subway Avenue. The report also states that council wants to “discourage the use of the Police Segway on Hastings Street for “pedestrian safety reasons. At a previous media call, Noosa Heads Police Beat officer in charge Senior Constable Pierre Senekal said the Segway was “here to stay.

Scootin’ around in Style ASK someone for their interpretation of a scooter, and the response is generally Vespa. Instant recognition of the iconic brand is forged from close to 70 years of production at the Piaggio factory in Italy’s famous region of Tuscany. From its post-war production intent to mobilise the Italian population, Vespa has gone on to worldwide recognition as the most famous brand in scooters and a symbol of quality and style.
In the Noosa region, Scott Macken and the team at Scooter Style are the authorised dealer for Vespa and the contemporary Piaggio range of scooters which includes Australia’s number one selling scooter the FLY 150. Scooter Style owners, Scott and Andrea, can provide first class advice on how to get around Noosa, on a scooter, in style. From the nippy 50 cc Piaggio ZIP and Vespa Primavera models to the mighty Vespa GTS 300cc
with ABS and traction control, Scooter Style has the range. If you want to broaden your horizons and destinations, talk to Scott about one of Piaggios’ big capacity tourers which include the Piaggio BV 350 and the Piaggio X10 500. hood of overeating at meal time,” she said. Cancer Council Queensland is urging Queenslanders to by-pass processed snack foods that don’t satisfy the health test. “Chocolates, chips, cakes, cereal bars, and muffins are laden with unhealthy ingredients that weigh heavy on the waistline,” Ms Clift said. “We recommend nude food – unprocessed snacks such as fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and legumes. “An apple a day can keep a waistline at bay, while too many sweet treats quickly amounts to defeat. “Queenslanders should aim for two pieces of fruit and five serves of vegetables a day – these can easily be incorporated into snacks between meals. “People on the go should grab an apple or banana, chomp on a carrot, or pack small serves of dried fruit and nuts. Low-fat yoghurt is also a good option – but be sure to look out for hidden sugars!” More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available via Cancer Council’s 13 11 20 or cancerqld.org.au.
Dealing with lung cancer CANCER Council Queensland and Lung Foundation Queensland will hold a free education seminar on the Sunshine Coast in August for locals living with lung cancer. The free seminar, Living well with Lung Cancer or Lung Metastases, will provide information and support to men and women who are living with the challenges associated with lung cancer. The seminar will be held on Thursday 13 August from 9.30am-noon at Bloomhill Integrated Cancer Care, 58 Ballinger Road, Buderim. Cancer Council Queensland cancer support co-ordinator Clare Howard said lung cancer patients needed dedicated information and support to assist them with the symptoms associated with a diagnosis. “Lung cancer is the fourth most common cancer diagnosed in men and women on the Sunshine Coast, and through this we hope to offer practical support and tips for coping with the effects of lung cancer,” Ms Howard said. “Not only will the seminar provide information and support to those who have been diagnosed with lung cancer or lung metastases, but
it will create an opportunity to connect with others dealing with the same issues. “The seminar will provide practical tips and tricks for managing symptoms such as breathlessness, cough, pain, fatigue and nausea, to increase your daily well-being. “We will also cover the use of guided imagery and relaxation practice to assist with anxiety and associated concerns.” The seminar will feature health professionals with specialist expertise in issues related to lung cancer. Guest speakers include Cancer Council Queensland clinical psychologist Samantha Clutton and PhD candidate Vanessa Brunelli. “Both our guest speakers have expertise and advanced knowledge about people living with lung cancer and lung metastases,” Ms Howard said. Reservations are essential and can be made by phoning Cancer Council Queensland’s Maroochydore office on 5451 6000 or emailing maroochydore@cancerqld.org.au before Monday 10 August. More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available at www.cancerqld.org. au or by calling Cancer Council on 13 11 20.

Gone are the days of downing a chocolate bar during the 3pm slump – the data shows we’re becoming a lot more mindful about the food that fuels our bodies.
NEW research shows health-conscious Aussies are boosting the snack industry, with lifestyle changes and weight concerns behind a strong shift to healthier snack foods. The latest data reveals a growing participation in sports, concerns about obesity and timepoor lifestyles are driving a surge in healthy snack consumption, while snack food growth slows overall in Australia. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said the new trend was promising. “To see more and more Australians reaching for healthy items is extremely promising,” Ms Clift said. “Gone are the days of downing a chocolate bar during the 3pm slump – the data shows we’re becoming a lot more mindful about the food that fuels our bodies. “Many Queenslanders let their health down by choosing convenient snack foods that are high in saturated fat, salt and sugar – with damaging impacts on health and well-being.” Ms Clift said poor diet led to overweight and obesity, increasing the risk of a range of chronic diseases – including cancer. “Regular healthy snacking is also a great way to manage appetite and reduce the likeli-

First home squeeze THE HIA CoreLogic RP Data residential land report for the March quarter showed price growth accelerating as turnover fell sharply.
AUCTION
HIA chief economist Harley Dale said this was not a good combination - escalating residential land values and a related decline in sales volumes. “The upcycle in detached and low-density housing construction has been strong, without being stellar,” he said. “The combination of significantly reduced turnover and strong price growth suggests that supply bottlenecks in residential land are intensifying. That is pricing new home buyers out of the housing market and capping the construction cycle at a lower level than would otherwise be the case.” Mr Dale said the provision of adequate, affordable, shovel-ready land was a crucial element to addressing housing affordability pressures across the residential property market. “More needs to be done to expedite supply in 2015/16. Removing the obstacles to affordable land supply is a core requirement of a successful taxation and federalism white paper reform process,” he said. During the March quarter, the residential land price in Australia increased by 4.1 per cent compared with the previous quarter. This represented an increase of 8.2 per cent compared to the same quarter of last year.
Adequate, affordable, shovel-ready land is a crucial element to addressing housing affordability pressures across the residential property market, according to HIA. During the March quarter, residential land transactions fell by 5.2 per cent compared with the previous quarter to be 17.6 per cent lower than the same period 12 months earlier. The March quarter represented the third consecutive decline in land transactions in Australia. According to CoreLogic RP Data research director Tim Lawless the trend towards fewer land sales had been evident since mid-2013 and was visible across each of the capital city vacant land markets. “The number of vacant land sales peaked over the June 2013 quarter and have since reduced by almost 30 per cent,” he said. “To see the price of land consistently rising over the same time frame suggests low supply is the main driver of this price growth rather than a slowdown in demand.”

Rental market tight REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said despite low interest rates that have been encouraging people to move out of rented property and into their own purchased home, demand for rental accommodation in the inner city remained strong. “People are choosing to live where they can be close to entertainment, work and transport and this is reflected in the vacancy rate data.
previous quarter. Caboolture registered the lowest vacancy rate in the state at just one per cent. “This reflects a very tight market and there is very little rental accommodation on the market, at the moment, REIQ Caboolture Zone chairwoman Robyn Lachmund said. “Caboolture needs more rental accommodation and more seasonal worker accommodation, Ms Lachmund said. The Gold Coast’s vacancy rate bumped up slightly, going from 1.3 per cent at the end of March to 2.3 per cent at the end of June.
“Despite a strong level of supply coming online this year with apartments under construction in the inner ring, we can see that the vacancy rate is three per cent, and that rate drops to 2.4 per cent in the middle ring of 5km-20km radius, she said.
However, the long-term trend reveals seasonal conditions are at work on the Gold Coast, with vacancy rates tighter during the summer months and easing somewhat during the winter months, as would be expected in a tourism centre.
“This information suggests that demand for rental accommodation is keeping pace with supply.
The Sunshine Coast dipped from 1.9 per cent to 1.5 per cent, reflecting continued tight conditions, largely due to seasonal workers and relocations from Brisbane.
The REIQ classifies vacancy rates of 2.5 per cent or below as tight and rates of 2.5 per cent to 3.5 per cent as healthy. Vacancy rates of 3.6 per cent or above is classed as a weak market. Looking outside Brisbane City, Ipswich and Logan’s vacancy rates were both 2.8 per cent at the end of June, nudging up from 2.4 per cent and 2.1 per cent respectively. Moreton Bay registered a vacancy rate of 1.4 per cent, up from 1.3 per cent the
“The trend of people commuting to Brisbane from the Sunshine Coast is continuing and, as people seek to leave the city and opt for a sea change, this places pressure on rental accommodation, Ms Mercorella said. Overall, as projects such as the new Queen’s Wharf project get underway, the impact upon Brisbane and the south-east corner will be positive for the market.

‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ is an intimate tribute to some of the world’s finest electric guitarists … The Electric 80s Show is a celebration of all things ’80s and is coming to Noosa Heads Surf Club for one night only.
Phil performed to an audience of two billion people at the closing of the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and has toured Asia, Europe and the USA several times with rave reviews. Phil has now emerged from his self imposed semiretirement of recent years and is experiencing huge success touring nationally. While My Guitar Gently Weeps Saturday 31 July, from 8pm Diggers Bar Tewantin Noosa RSL from 8pm. Tickets are free for members and $10 for non-members and are available from reception or dial’n’charge on 5447 1766.
Night for the ’80s THE ’80s – it was the decade that redefined big hair, big shoulder pads, and big synth sounds. The creation of MTV revolutionised fashion, the music industry and TV. It was a decade of excess and outrageous fashions. And now, the ’80s are back with a vengeance along with the big, bright, bold youthful energy where Whitney wanted to dance with somebody, Devo needed to Whip it, boys wore eyeliner and tight clothes and girls cut their hair short and dressed in fluoro. The Electric 80s Show was born from a love of the ’80s by a group of musos who lived
through it. For a lot of the band, the ’80s were spent donning make-up and rocking the stage at Bombay Rock in Surfers alongside the likes of Psuedo Echo and Eurogliders. For some of the younger members, it was roller-skating to Madonna and dreaming of being Baby in Dirty Dancing. But it’s not a just the enthusiasm of the band members for the ’80s that makes this show so sensational. The band utilises the very best in world class touring technology. The Electric 80s Show meticulously and faithfully reproduces the sounds and the light
shows that were a trademark of the ’80s music era. The show is fully costumed, and with the entire stage themed for that big ’80s vibe, it will be a night for ’80s fans to remember as everyone is taken back in time. Don’t miss this epic show with hits form Cyndi Lauper to Guns and Roses and everything in between. The Electric 80s Show will be held at the Noosa Heads Surf Club on Saturday 15 August from 10pm. Tickets are on sale now at $15 pre-sale via www.noosasurfclub.com.au or $20 on the door.

Grandkids are cool Life of
brine PHIL JARRATT
GRANDPARENTS DAY AS MUCH as the very idea of it scared the hell out of me a decade or so ago, being a grandparent has its upsides, I have to admit. I remember as clear as yesterday (no, clearer) the moment the prospect of grandfatherhood first loomed. The great Queensland surfer Gary “Kong” Elkerton and I were on the Stansted Express, on our way home to France with a group of rowdy French grommets we had taken to compete in a pro junior in Cornwall. I took a phone call and rang off looking dismayed.“What’s wrong?” Kong asked. “My daughter’s getting married, and you know what’ll be next!” Kong moved into the seat next to me on the train and put his big arm around me. We sat in silence while the French groms – some one else’s grandkids - ran amok around us. But the reality is grandkids are cool. You can give them back, for one thing, and they can make you happy, and often proud, as two of ours did last week when they showed us around their new school as part of St Thomas More’s “Grandparents’ Day” celebrations. I’d never been celebrated as a grandparent before, let alone prayed for, so that was nice. After the liturgy, our two elder grandsons showed us around their classrooms and demonstrated their new-fangled gadgets, like iPads, for God’s sake. (Sorry Father). Bring back the abacus, I say. On a wall outside the classroom, the kids had written bio notes on their grandparents. Mine read:
MP floats down the line at the first Stubbies Pro, Burleigh Heads, 1977. Picture: AITIONN
“My Poppy is a longboarder. He hurt his leg and had a heart attack but he’s okay.” Pithy, direct, straight to the point. Maybe a journalist in the making, but we’ll do our best to dissuade him. Elsewhere that same day grandson number three was receiving an award at his school, an event we missed but liked on Facebook soon after. So well done all round, grandies. RIP MP MKII IT SEEMS impossible that more than three years have passed since the great Michael Peterson passed away. The memories of that extraordinary day are very clear – the packed funeral parlour at Tweed Heads, brother Tommy’s hilariously moving eulogy, many drinks at the Snapper Surf Club, talking story and watching the “MP Swell” roar down the Superbank. A week later, I was at Bells with Tommy Peterson, raising our glasses to MP again, and Tommy said: “You know, I hope one day we can stop treating him like a god and just remember him as Mick.” I wrote Tommy’s line down on the back of a coaster and later transferred it to a notepad I still have. It must have been a thought he had frequently, because I’ve just discovered it in slightly different form on the back cover of Sean Doherty’s fine new remembrance of Mick, MP Untold: “Everyone treated him like a god, but he just wanted to be treated like a normal bloke.” Far from being another crude cash-in on the legend of MP, Australia’s greatest surfer of the 1970s and one of our culture’s great tragedies, Seano, author of MP back in 2004, has compiled a loving tribute to the man behind the myth, trawling through the memo-
ries of family and friends to find that “normal bloke” that Tommy remembers. By his own admission, Seano never knew MP the surf star, nor Mick the sly toker with the wry grin, only Michael the overweight invalid who lived with his mother. In this book, he sets out to find the hidden persona from those who understood it best. Seano is a fine writer, but, as author Malcolm Knox notes in his foreword to MP Untold, he has left his ego at the door here, letting the friends and eye-witnesses tell their own stories without intrusion, until his astute summary at the end. It’s a good approach, and even though I knew the surf star as well as anyone in the media at the time, I found many new stories to chuckle at, and even shed the odd tear over, well told by old mates and fellow reprobates, and, of course, by brother Tom and mother Joan. Both Tommy and Joan present as rough diamonds, but it doesn’t take too much scratching to realise that the cogs are always turning on the inside. Joan is the master of the 30 second sound bite; Tommy can tell you what Mick was doing every year of his life, recall every surf and drug binge they shared. And his dates always check out. Together, they are the flesh and blood of this story, but Seano has found many more morsels to enjoy. I’ll be talking to Sean Doherty about the “lost stories of a surfing legend” at one of Annie Grossman’s fabulous book celebrations on Tuesday, 4 August, from 6.30pm at Zachary’s Gourmet Pizza Bar, Peregian Beach Village. Tickets are $18 a head (which includes a lot of pizza!) and there’ll be a cash bar. This one will be a sell-out so bookings are essential. Phone 5448 2053 or email anniesbooks@bigpond.com.

How lucky are we to have beautiful Lake Weyba on our doorstep? My wife and I decided to celebrate the successful dodging of another bullet – rejection of the Noosa On Weyba development application – by paddling our stand ups around the perimeter of the lake last weekend. It was an overcast morning with not a breath of wind, and out there on the middle of the sheet glass water, seeing nothing but wetlands, was pure magic.

Riverside festive spirits FOLLOWING the success of the first River Festival, the popular community event is back with live music, street food and the Stone and Wood van on the Boathouse lawn on Sunday 2 August. Noosaville will come to life with the Noosa Boathouse Winter River Festival, and festival goers can enjoy delicious street food by Noosa Boathouse chef Shane Bailey. Sean Fitzgerald from East of Eden will kick off at 2pm with chilled out tunes all the way from the Gold Coast followed by fantastic local talents Carl Wockner from 4pm and Mick Lindsay from 6pm. The festival is free of charge, although optional donations can be made to Sunshine Butterflies Charity at the entrance. Noosa Boathouse owner Phil Bradford said the festival would make the most of a fantastic location and encouraged everyone to bring their family and friends to enjoy the atmosphere and sunset on the Noosa River. The Kayak Noosa team will be on hand with their brand new giant, family-sized stand up paddle boards to provide some great family activities. The Noosa Boathouse Winter River Festival will be held on the lawn of the Boathouse restaurant on Sunday 2 August from 2pm.
The River Festival is back on Sunday 2 August from 2pm on the Boathouse lawn, Noosaville.

Our prized wedding venues take the honours best suppliers across more than 30 categories for each state. Noosa Springs’ executive general manager Mark Brady said it was a terrific result for Noosa Springs made possible by its staff’s professionalism and dedicated teamwork. “Every wedding requirement is catered for onsite from accommodation for honeymooners and wedding guests to stunning ceremony sites, romantic reception rooms; spectacular golf course wedding photographic sites and a dedicated wedding co-ordinator to ensure everything runs smoothly in the lead-up to and actual wedding day,” he said. Noosa Springs’ wedding co-ordinator Anabelle Gervais said she was thrilled with the win and the finalist nominations. “It’s testament to our niche offering as one of Noosa’s, and indeed Queensland’s, top destination wedding venues,” Ms Gervais said.
Noosa Boathouse, Noosaville, placed third with an impressive score of 98.96 per cent in the Restaurant Reception category.

TWO of Noosa’s premier restaurants have taken out top honours at the Australian Bridal Industry Academy awards on Tuesday (21 July). The 17th annual awards were held at Cloudland in Brisbane and saw Noosa Boathouse and River Deck Restaurant feature in the top three Restaurant Reception venues in Queensland. The River Deck Restaurant, Noosa Marina, was awarded second place with an impressive score of 99.50 per cent, followed by Noosa Boathouse, Noosaville, with 98.96 per cent in third place. River Deck Restaurant owner Sue Baxby said she and her husband, Geoff, who just returned from the Melbourne Bridal Expo, were very excited to win the award. “Weddings are such a large part of what we do,” she said. “We did 81 weddings last year, so they’re a big part of our business and it’s exciting to be recognised for that.” Noosa Boathouse event manager Tahlia Gittel said the team was proud of the results. “In a very competitive market, our team is thrilled with this result, and we’re so proud to be consistently delivering fantastic wedding experiences to our couples every year,” she said. Noosa Springs Golf and Spa Resort also entered the awards and walked away with three honours including the number one Queensland venue for the first night honeymoon with a score of 96.30 per cent, second place for the best motel or resort reception venue with a score of 97.32 per cent, and finalists in the best ceremony venue category with a score of 97.04 per cent. This year more than 35,000 newlyweds participated in the ABIA poll to determine the nation’s best wedding suppliers. Newlyweds were asked to rate and review their chosen wedding supplier according to set criteria: quality of product, quality of service, value for money and attitude of staff. The bridal ratings were collated to determine, according to the voting newlyweds, the

NOOSA Dolphins Junior Rugby Union Under-Nine Fins played out a thrilling 25all draw with SCGS on Saturday. Credit goes to the squad for taking what’s learned at training onto the paddock and showing structured teamwork. Captain Jaxon led by example with numerous hit ups and offloads, finding the holes to make good ground then rallied the team at games end for a loud three cheers showing good sportsmanship. Odette continued her good form tackling well and breaking away in the first half, making good ground and unlucky not to score. Remy drove over and secured like a vault and how about the tap 10 out from the line bulldozing through for Louie to rip the ball, spin and score a great team try. Louie showed fast covering pace in defence and side stepped his way forward. Saatchan won the Team Spirit award for his work rate all game. Skilful runs forward with timed offloads, great ball security and covering defence that continued to stop Grammar attacking the line. Try scorers Mack and Hunter were rewarded for their effort with Mack feeding the running on Fins with ball and making crucial tackles when needed. Hunter hunted the back of the pack to take the ball up hard and marked his opposing player well, not giving an inch. Forwards Connor and Jack were again strong providing the secure platform so the Fins could set and get the ball out to the waiting backs. Both broke away to make good ground going forward with great offloads. Kaleb made good tackles in the first half and broke away making ground in the second before coming off. Finn positioned himself well in the line, and was effective taking the ball up and picking up the ball once our forwards cleaned out. Joch and Byron held the line and were effective all game with great passing and picking the ball up. Both put their bodies on the line going to ground from breakaway runs and both had last-line-of-defence tackles to stop Grammar breaking through. Player of the Match was Zac who gave one hundred per cent. U7 Reds 55 - Grammar Blue 60 A typically soft track at Toad Hole produced a fast flowing and evenly contested match on Saturday. Both teams traded tries and were locked up at half time guaranteeing an exciting second half finale. Zac’s brilliant individual try was a highlight as he danced and jigged his way to the try line. Darcy Jax and Conor were epic in the

U8s - Will and Harry – celebrating their achievements. tight stuff and Sarena put her body on the line on defence, Harry continues to impress with straight running and skilful offloads. Will and Noah backed up well and both continue to improve with every match. Player Of The Match was Zac Sammut. U8 Reds 20 d Fins 10 Reds discovered again, this week, that there are no easy games as the local derby proved. The game began in the centre of the pitch and moved very little as the teams set about tackling each other into the ground. Both sides worked hard in the breakdown, pushing over, retrieving ball and making a few centimetres was the norm. First half Reds tries came from the drive and breaks in the loose play. Ollie kept on taking hits for the team. Jamie and Brandon took brave runs into the pack. Harry and Charlie tackled, ran and kept the Fins honest. Clay and Tom ran all sorts of support play while Player of the Match Will marshalled troops through the centre.
Clancy, Atticus and Oscar tested their running shoes and tried to find breaks down the line. U11 Noosa Fins 55 d Brothers 0 The Fins returned to second place in the ladder with another nine tries, completing their 9th win of the season. Their confidence, belief, discipline and skill made for an unstoppable performance, outclassing the opposition all over the park. Tries: Lochie Dudgeon (5), Jarrah Charlesworth, Soren Manssen, Joe Siemon, Billy Bougoure Conversions: Jarrah Charlesworth (4) Ethan Pohlner. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match: Marlon Baird U15 Noosa 26 d Maroochydore 7 A great result although a scrappy game for a bonus point win. Some good performances from the boys. Tom had a great game as did Sameet, Adam H, and Roh. Backs were given room to move due to hard work done in the forwards with Noah and Adam J having good games. Jock fired as always and has found a new role taking conversions. Try scorers were Noah Blake, Jock Hannson, Alex Moses and James Ramsden. Josh Brooks 1 conversion and Jock 2. Player of the Match with a great performance was Seb Parviainen. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

A World Olympic Champ at 12 PEREGIAN Springs Golf Club has a new world champion in the form of junior golfer Cassie Porter. Cassie took on the best in the world to take the gold medal in the 12-and-under age division at the World Junior Olympic Games Golf Championship held at the Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena, California late last week. Cassie finished the championship 13-shots-clear of her nearest rival with rounds of 79, 77 and 74, an outstanding result. She won the right to represent her country by winning her age division at the 2015 Australian Junior Age Division Golf Championship held in Yeppoon earlier this year. Peregian Springs CEO Declan McCollam said the club is very proud of Cassie’s achievements.
“She has been coached by our Head Professional, Kai McKay, and we are delighted with how far she has come at such a young age,” he said. “Cassie played in other events in the USA in the lead-up to the Junior Golf Olympics and impressed coaches from several colleges. “She will remain in contact with them and it is very likely she will visit the USA again next year.” Cassie’s parents, Di and Jon Porter, said that they were exceptionally proud of Cassie’s achievement’s and are very grateful to everyone at Peregian Springs Golf Club for their support. Cassie returns home this week and will be thoroughly congratulated by the members on Friday evening.

Under-11 Gold player-of-the-match Cade makes a bust from Bribie Island’s defence!
Pirates on the ball, with grit By TANIA PHILLIPS GRIT and determination was the order of the day for the under-8 Yellow Junior Pirates in their Rugby League game at the weekend. The under-8s played a hard game against Coolum Colts. Down one player, another back from injury they put in a gutsy effort to ensure the Colts’ boys were kept on their toes in every play. A few tries, lots of tackles and some awesome sideline runs saw them put in a good, solid effort. Meanwhile the under-7 Yellow side sailed on down to Kawana to meet for a midday game. The Pirates boys rocked the ocean and created a tsunami for the Dolphins. Player of the match, Lachlan Britten showed his true pace as he zipped through the defence to score five tries. Under-10 Blue had a good game against Coolum. Line defence, practised at training, was very good. The boys are starting to get some confidence and are playing as a team. Player of the match was Kalieb with great enthusiasm, as always, and helping out to make sure the team spread out in defence. noosa.starcommunity.com.au
Under-8 Yellow player Lachlan Ward outruns Coolum to score a try!
The under-10 Yellow team travelled to Palmwoods this week and with a super defensive effort that kept the opposition scoreless. Great work by man of the match Jarrah, with some really good tackles and some hard hit ups. The under-11 Gold continued their great season. Week after week they turn up and do everything asked of them. This week was no different. Bribie Island arrived to play an intense brand of footy. The young Pirates all jumped into their boat and set their sails north to treasure island. Cade was the MVP
in a solid victory. Bright lights shone down on the under-13 Gold boys on Friday night with a feisty battle against Caboolture. Credit goes to the entire team as always, they all showed great commitment. Encouraging support from the Noosa spectators with constant feedback to the players during play left a good feeling at the end of the match for all. Well done to the players of the match (with so many outstanding), Floyd three points, Henry two points and Ethan one point.

LAST weekend was a big one for our Sunshine Coast Surf Lifesaving people. Friday night saw the Maroochydore club play host to Sunshine Coast Awards of Excellence Dinner and Saturday the Annual Report and Financial Statement plus the Election of Officers for the forthcoming season were tabled and conducted. At the Awards of Excellence Dinner winners covering all aspects of lifesaving for the Season 2014/’15 were announced. Happy to say that both Sunshine and Noosa members were among those named. For Sunshine, Scott Summers was named Surf Lifesaver of the Year, and Nick Sloman Athlete of the Year, Warrick Redwood Volunteer of the Year and Johanna Redwood Rookie Coach of the Year. Sunshine also took out another major when they were named the Handicap Champion Club of the Year. Noosas Charlotte Webber received a major being named 18 to 25 Young Lifesaver of the Year and Laurie Beer, Official of the Year. However, the major award of the year the prestigious Buhk Wilks Trophy for the Sunshine Coast Club of the Year was won by Marcoola; second was Noosa Heads with Sunshine finishing fourth. With a total of 14 clubs competing for our two local clubs to finish in the

top four is indeed a good result. This trophy is named in memory of two great surf lifesaving legends, Billy Buhk and Freddie Wilks. Both were from the Alexander Headlands Club. Bill was big in administration in both club and branch level and Fred (often referred to by us youngies as Little Fred) became legendary as an R&R, (rescue and resuscitation) coach and judge. All clubs are inspected unannounced several times during the season with demonstrations being assessed and questions asked. Also assessors will also check the condition of all gear required for regulation patrols. Log books must be up to date and radio towers correctly manned. It is because of this constant ridged checking that to maintain a level of patrolling good enough to win the Buhks Wilks Trophy or finish in the top group is something that all clubs who value their reputation as lifesavers inspire to. With regard to the annual report, the stats that are published give a good in-depth look at the workings of our clubs. It also gives our general public an insight as to what is required to keep our beaches safe during the summer months. For example the total numbers of hours spent by our volunteer patrol members in the Noosa club were 18,475 and for Sunshine it was 6782. (The high tally for Noosa is because Peregian Beach now being a part of the Noosa structure, the total comes under one name.) Rescues for the season on the Sunshine Coast totaled 1017 as against the previous seasons total of 779. Preventative actions last season were 58,121 as against 33,551 the year prior. These figures are good as it tells us that with big increases in beachgoers, the patrols are fully alert and their constant vigilance and prompt actions prevent many a minor breech of beach safety becoming a major rescue situation. The figures for our unsung heroes, the first aid patrol personal, has risen this season to 2348 up from 1837 on the season previous. This will always be a problem for with bigger crowds and big influxes of foreign tourists, who generally know very little about surf safety, beach accidents will occur. Happy to relate the Battle of the Rising Stars talent quest at the Noosa Surf Club has been a roaring success. This quest will continue for the next seven weeks and its purpose is to give the local artists a chance to display their talent before a panel of judges. Surf Club manager Anton Mogg said, “This is in keeping with the Surf Club policy of supporting local functions, in particular those involving our young people. We wish all involved every success.

Swag of medals at state titles By DEAN SMALLMAN LAST weekend a group of 100 Sunshine Beach SLSC members made the trip south to the Gold Coast for the state SLSQ Pool Rescue Championships. For those unfamiliar with this off-season event, pool rescue events are a mix of traditional surf lifesaving events using various pieces of equipment in the somewhat warmer waters of a swimming pool. This year’s state titles were conducted over two days at the newly refurbished Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, which is one very cool and impressive facility, with six different pools one of which is indoors. The U11s to U15s took to the water on day one with the more “weathered competitors making a splash on day two.The 100-plus events are both team and individual based and include patient tows using rescue tubes, obstacle courses, mannequin carries as well as numerous relays. Action on day one start-
when you consider the power clubs of both the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, this is certainly an outstanding result and a great foundation for the year ahead for the Nippers and the overall Surf Sports group. Not wanting to sit back and dwell on their glory, an even bigger team will head back to the Gold Coast in two weeks for the Australian Pool Rescue Championships. Held over three days, the Australian Pool Rescue Championship will see teams from all over Australia gather to prove themselves as the best of the best, and we look forward to communicating the team’s successes on our return. For those wanting to find out more about becoming a part of this amazing group for the upcoming season of Nippers and Surf Sports, simply jump online at www. sunshinebeachslsc.com.au and don’t forget to diarise the annual club sign on day at the Noosa Aquatic Centre on Saturday 5 September.
ed at 8am and concluded at 5pm, with Sunday a little more forgiving. While the weather wasn’t of Sunshine Coast quality, it didn’t stop the Sunshine Beach SLSC team from firing on all off-season cylinders. In all the team of 35 competitors brought home in-excess of 40 medals including 10 gold medals and almost 20 silver medals. Special mention must go to super coach Jo Redwood, who personally claimed four gold medals and a very nice silver - nothing like leading by example - and the “he’s pretty great at anything to do with water Nick Sloman, who bagged three gold medals and four silver medals. It was also impressive to see the ever growing 11and 12-year-old girls and boys continuing to shine at carnivals with a bag of silver and bronze medals. This was by far Sunshine Beach SLSC best performance at the state Pool Rescue Championships, with a third place overall, and

New coach has strokes for folks OLYMPIC kayak champion Clint Robinson has joined the coaching team at Sunshine Beach Surf Club as the new ski coach for the coming season. Clint has been competing in surf ski and kayaking events around the world for over 25 years and boasts a long list of honours including being awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM), installed in the Sunshine Coast sport hall of fame and the Sport Australia hall of fame. Clint said he is looking forward to working with the teams and preparing
them for the following 39 weeks until Nationals are over. “The first year, what we’re trying to achieve is lay down a good structure for the athletes. “That will hopefully open up a lot of ability options for them, not only through the stability but also through speed as you need speed to win races,” he said. “At the end of the day, the first season for me is while we would like them to perform well we want to make sure we get the team paddling correctly and to also introduce a lot of young people
to paddling in the right kind of way.” Clint said training is also about having fun and keeping the experience enjoyable with variety and maintaining the club culture. “You’re working with a lot of motivated people. “The good thing about surf lifesaving compared to a lot of professional sports is the fact that everyone here is a volunteer... so you usually get a really good, dedicated athlete,” he said. “So when someone wants to do well, they’re not getting anything for it so they’ve got to really want it.”
By TANIA PHILLIPS WATER polo has received a new lease on life at Sunshine Beach State School with new and experienced players developing their skills at Noosa Aquatic Centre each Tuesday at lunchtime. And they are still looking for more players. The players learn to swim with the ball, pass, shoot as well as the rules and tactics of the game. Their egg beater leg work and ball skills are improved with drills and the weekly session concludes with a fun game. Each year the more experienced players are invited to join the players from the high school to make combined teams to compete in the Sunshine Coast Schools Water Polo competition. This competition is held on Monday evenings during term three and four for eight weeks at the Noosa, Kawana and Nambour pools. The program has been very successful with some players going on to represent in the Sunshine Coast Regional Teams, Queensland state teams and in the

imported warmblood that is already proving to be a very consistent winner and another Olympic prospect for her. Pipped at the post into second place was Stuart Jenkins from Gatton riding a horse from the Jenkins stud, Fairview Animation. Paula Hamood was two seconds behind on her striking white warmblood Nero. Cooroy’s Billy Raymont who, until this class, had had several wins over the three-days of competition, went clear in the first round but crashed through the first element of the double on his Olympic prospect Anton. His horse stopped in the second-round jump-off. Nevertheless, Billy’s
consistent form this year saw him the best competitor over the four major competitions in the Sunshine Coast Showjumping Club’s three shows. This effort won him the Stubben showjumping saddle, valued at $4,100 donated by Sandale Saddlery. Two other titles were contested over the three day SCSJ Club’s July show. The Young Riders Championship, for riders aged 18 to 21 years old, was won by Tayla Whalley. The other was the Junior Championship for riders from 12 to 18 years old. This was won by Billy Healey on Windmill Park Cool As.
Australian schoolgirls and schoolboys teams. Last year the school’s girls team, with players from years five, six, seven and one year eight player won the year eight B division of the competition after defeating teams from Matthew Flinders, St Andrews, Mt Creek SHS, St John’s, Good Shepherd and Siena College. The boys team was very young but enjoyed lots of fun games. According to students Tiffany and Francesca, the youngsters enjoyed the opportunity. “Water polo is a great sport and activity to do. "It keeps my fitness high and I love being in the water. I do it with all of my friends and my coach is amazing,” she said. “I love water polo. It’s great to get out and be involved in something sporty and exciting. "It’s fun to compete against other schools and play with my friends,” Francesca said. Noosa’s a fishing treat
Player out By RICHARD MURRIHY
By JACK MANGROVE NOOSA anglers have again been spoilt with a great range of piscatorial challengers. Starting with the river, the mouth has been really firing with quality bream, tailor, trevally, school jew and ludrick. Flesh baits like mullet and bonito strips have been one of the best performers with soft plastics and slugs also claiming some quality fish, and as far as the ludrick go, Coolum cabbage and small prawn baits have done the damage. Down towards the sand bags on the dog beach, quality whiting have taken a liking to worms, peeled prawns, and yabbies. Woods Bay has again been the home of some quality trevally – anglers have been enticing them with surface poppers in the low light periods and soft plastics through the day. The Gympie Terrace stretch of the river was fishing well with families enjoying whiting, bream and the odd flathead. Up towards the ski runs, flathead have been plentiful with the run-out tide the best time to plan your attack. Soft plastic in reds and pinks have been very productive.
Toni BaileyHazelhurst from Sydney with a quality snapper from a recent Cougar One charter to North Reef.
Offshore, things have been equally amazing. Sunshine Reef is still producing some great coral trout, fish your lure or soft plastic hard to the bottom here and you will be rewarded. Also at Sunshine, the sweetlip are on the chew as well as parrot and snapper. The deeper Reefs like Chardon’s and North Reef have also come up with the goods, with larger snapper, pearl perch, sweetlip, cobia, and jewies. The charter
operators have been taking advantage of the great weather and doing the run up too Double Island with some outstanding results. Snapper, venus tusk fish, pearl perch, mack tuna, moses perch and lots of amberjack were all on the menu. On the beach, the Northshore was inundated with anglers and their 4x4s heading up the beach in search of those elusive tailor. Most anglers were not disappointed with some good catches reported. Along with the tai-
lor there were some nice winter bream, flathead, whiting and bigger dart. Most anglers were bait fishing with pillies, mullet strips, and salted bonito. Those that didn’t have a 4x4 were also in the hunt with the gutter just outside the Northshore Caravan Park also holding good fish. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.
FIRST we all wish Lewis a speedy recovery from his injury sustained on Saturday. Hopefully his recovery is only the three weeks that he has been told. With the weather perfect it made for good softball on the weekend. Noosa under-15s batted first and had a great start with Shinai putting one over the fence to score three runs and the team backed up with another two. While in the field Shinae struck out two batters and Riley took a fly catch at first 5-0 after 1. In the second innings, Noosa only got one home but kept it together in the field again with Shinae pitching two strike outs and Shinai to Riley out at first. The third saw a better batting effort with Jacob hitting a three bagger and Riley a two bagger to get seven over the plate. Again Shinae pitched two strike outs and Riley caught a line drive. The fourth innings saw Noosa have three safe hits and again pile on seven over the plate, while Cavs mounted a mini comeback getting five runs of their own as Noosa relaxed a bit. Shinai took a catch to round out a good game. Noosa won 20-5. The under-17s played each other with Black getting the points over White 8-5. A good even game between the two teams. The Noosa men beat the Budgie Smugglers in a good all round performance. Injuries had an effect this week with a few players carrying injuries into the game to keep the numbers up but limiting their performance.

The Fiona Winter Realty Noosa Tigers have come from 32 points behind to snatch a 10 point win over Caloundra last weekend. A master stroke half time sermon from senior coach and star forward James Gellie was the catalyst for a Tiger revival after half time. With the third place Tigers 26 points down at the main break, Gellie focused on just getting out there and having fun. “It’s not a chore boys or at least it shouldn’t be,” he said. “The reason we are all here is because we love it. Just go out there and have some fun, stick to our game plan and the rest will look after itself.” Noosa’s second half was just outstanding, stringent in defence, whilst onballers Hill and Watling were in everything. In fact both those two were good contributors in the opening half however there second half performances were eyecatching. Hill especially has had a

The Noosa Tigers Reserves squad travelled south last week to play Caloundra. With plenty of players out of both squads our depth was always going to be tested. We started well in the first quarter but inaccurate kicking (2 goals 5 behinds) saw us only in front by a few points. From here our accuracy kicked in and we kicked 13 goals 1 in the next three quarters to run out winners by 64 points. Our key forwards played their roles well with Seb Clift kicking seven straight and

terrific year week-in-week-out while Mackay recruit Watling is living up to the praise former Tiger coach Craig ‘Swinger’ Horwood gave him as current coach of the North Mackay Saints. Big Zac McDonald continues to compete and gather heaps of footy on a consistent basis while youngsters Jesse Malthouse and Corey Boardman were again in the Tigers’ best. Cubby Isles was instrumenMatty Gray kicking four. Our backline held up well day and only conceded four goals for the match and as always our midfielders set the play up well for our forwards with Michael Bidios named best on ground for his huge effort in the ruck for almost the entire match. This week will see us head to Maroochydore for a Sunday game in what will be a massive clash for both clubs. A win for Noosa could see us cement top spot with only two games to play and a double chance come finals time! Best of luck to both teams on Sunday and we would love to have your support down at Maroochydore on Sunday!

Sunday saw the under 15’s play Coolum at home and the first half was not too good but the boys showed plenty of effort in the second half as they were decimated by injuries and playing a couple of players down. Maverick was his usual busy player continually reading the ball and getting intercepts, while Riley toiled well in the Ruck.

Getting closer to the finals now, can’t wait. Go Tigers! Cheers, Pittsy
the damage in the second half and will learn from this as they go on. The 13 blues played next and they found some spark. Kawana was a much bigger and well-drilled team but the younger Noosa Team never gave up. Jake was in and under every pack and was supported by Kye who kept trying to break through the lines with great attack on the ball.

His grandfather was a Gaelic footballer with the Kerry senior team, winning an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medal in 1914. Breen kicked a wobbly punt that bounced through for a behind that broke the deadlock with Collingwood late in the 1966 Grand Final that became St Kilda’s first and, to date, only premiership. He was captain in 1979 and former club games record holder having played in 300 career games.
