SURF COAST Shire has published a you-beaut arts trail map promoting a series of events on 15 and 16 August everywhere from Winchelsea to Toquay and down to Lorne. The only brush hair in the paint is that the map is sadly out of date because it still lists Geelong Airport on Torquay Rd and fails to include new ring road connection Baanip Boulevard. The shire might have to include the art of navigation in its next effort.

BRONWYN BISHOP might have gone off the rails with her taxpayer-funded chopper to a party fundraiser at Clifton Springs but Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull was on track

with his trip to Geelong by V/line this week. The Speaker apologised for spending $5227 on a trip, which cost Mr Turnbull only $8.26. And he would have been well aware of the significance of the journey, after the exposure Ms Bishop received during her flyover. Mr Turnbull then got a lift to Torquay from Ms Henderson to attend the NBN rollout publicity shot, which, as pictured, appropriately positioned Malcolm in the middle. The ride could have been seen as another slap in the face for the Speaker but Ms Henderson was having none of it, preferring instead to simply car-pool. IT COULD be the move that nets Adelaide Crows star Patrick Dangerfield. Known as the AFL’s keenest and most accomplished fisherman, Dangerfield will no doubt be chuffed to learn his favourite non-football pastime will be easier for him to pursue should he return home. A decent catch himself, Dangerfield would make great use of a replacement boardwalk recently installed to improve access to the beach for recreational anglers at his home town, Moggs Creek - hopefully, close to the house he is rumoured to have bought. A popular area with surf fishers, the stretch of water between Fairhaven Surf Life Saving Club and Eastern View is a productive spot for Australian salmon, gummy shark, mullet and trevally. Geelong is baiting the star with significant dollars - but the lure that could get Danger over the line might just be closer to his heart than his wallet. In any case, everyone knows that cats enjoy fish far more than crows.

POLICE have impounded three cars after arresting hoons in separate Geelong incidents this week. A 34-year-old’s car was impounded after he was detected travelling at more than double the speed limit in Corio yesterday afternoon. Police clocked the Ford sedan at 163km/h in a 80km/h
zone on the Princes Hwy at 3.40pm The vehicle was impounded for 30 days under Victorian hoon legislation. Police expected to charge the Hoppers Crossing man on summons with various traffic related offences. On Sunday night police caught a 16-year-old unac-
companied learner driver and a P-plater hooning at Waurn Ponds. Patrol officers allegedly saw them performing burnouts in a rest stop area off Geelongbound lanes of the city’s bypass around 9pm. Both their vehicles were immediately impounded under the hoon legislation.

West post worker wins ‘Lamborghini’ sex case By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A MARRIED man propositioned a female employee for sex, touching her breasts and crotch during three months of sexual harassment at Geelong West’s post office, a state tribunal has ruled. Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) found that Geelong West Licenced Post Office owner and manager David Donald Smith harassed Amanda Jayne Collins from January to April 2013. Ms Collins, also married, detailed 47 encounters for VCAT hearings. Mr Smith denied any sexual harassment, claiming the incidents either never happened or that Ms Collins welcomed them. Ms Collins said in January 2013
Mr Smith told her he wanted a relationship with her and tried to kiss her in the back room of the post office. She told Mr Smith she was shocked, happily married and considered him like a father figure, VCAT heard. Later Mr Smith told Ms Collins: “I’m not going to beat around the bush, I want to have sex with you. She replied that it would not happen and reminded him she was happily married. Another time Mr Smith sent Ms Collins a text message saying he would like to bring her to orgasm, which he would prefer through intercourse so he could be pleasured too. Ms Collins told VCAT she felt disgusted and asked him to stop sending sexual messages.
She detailed an alleged sexual assault in a staff room when Mr Smith allegedly approached her with a “scary look in his eyes and started rubbing her shoulders and down her arms. Ms Collins said she backed away but he followed, moving his hands toward her crotch area and thighs, saying: “Come on, you know you want to, come on, come on. Ms Collins told the hearing the incident left her “very distressed. At other times Mr Smith put his fingers inside her bra and told her: “I want to take you out the back against the safe. Ms Collins told the hearing Mr Smith offered her the contents of his wallet if she would let him massage her thighs for 15 minutes.
VCAT heard she later told Mr Smith: “I cannot believe you said that. You made me feel like a prostitute. Mr Smith allegedly likened Ms Collins to a Lamborghini in a garage, saying: “If I can’t drive it then I don’t want it here anymore. VCAT Judge Pamela Jenkins said in a summary of evidence that Ms Collins and her husband had since relocated from Geelong. “She has been unable to return to work since her employment with (Mr Smith) ceased and she is still receiving counselling. Ms Collins is seeking compensation for breaches of the Equal Opportunity Act, plus legal costs. VCAT will conduct a further hearing to determine compensation and costs.
In brief Mama attacked POLICE are searching for two unknown men who attempted to force entry to Geelong’s Mexicali Mama Restaurant at 5.30am yesterday. Police said the pair arrived at the Moorabool St restaurant in a white Holden sedan before unsuccessfully trying to force entry with jemmy bars.
Swap abandoned GEELONG’S council has refused to sell land at Drysdale for an expansion of St Ignatius Secondary College. A City Hall statement said council had abandoned the sale after Roman Catholic Trust Corporation and St Thomas Presbytery declined to sell in return a parcel of land at St Leonards.
Card stolen A STOLEN credit card has been used 36 times over three days at Belmont, Highton and Waurn Ponds, according to police. Investigators released an image of a man, pictured, who they want to interview over the card, allegedly stolen when uninvited guests arrived at a Leopold house party earlier this month.
We’re dreamin’ GEELONG residents dream of opening their own business more than any other Victorians, according to a new survey. Money manager Yellow Brick Road said Geelong residents had a greater focus on getting in shape and paying off their mortgages than the average Victorian.
Fine withdrawn CITY HALL has withdrawn a $152 fine against a man who parked in a no-stopping zone to pick up his terminally ill wife after she collapsed on Ryrie St. Acting chief executive officer Kevin Spiller admitted that “in hindsight we absolutely should have acted differently.

THE AFL will give Geelong Cats $4 million for the fourth stage of Simonds Stadium’s redevelopment. AFL chief Gillon McLachlan said the funding would match the Cats’commitment of $4 million on a dollar-for-dollar basis. “Simonds Stadium is a key part of the AFL landscape that serves the people of Geelong and the wider Western Victorian country region with the ability to watch top-level AFL football,” Mr McLachlan said. “The fourth stage of the redevelopment of the ground will strengthen the venue as an AFL location but will also provide Geelong with the ability to attract other key events such as Big Bash

Lyons toasts local Oktoberfest MAYOR Darryn Lyons has helped lure one of the world’s oldest and most popular festival traditions to Geelong. The city will stage its first Oktoberfest after his Big Group of Companies formed a partnership with Events People Australia, which runs a similar festival in Tasmania. Cr Lyons said he was thrilled about bringing Oktoberfest to his hometown. “We’re a proudly multicultural city and Oktoberfest Geelong is a fantastic addition to our existing cultural events program and I know Geelong will embrace it. “This is a fantastic new event for Geelong, filled with fun and tradition. We’re thrilled that we have been able to secure Oktoberfest Geelong for a minimum of five years, so move over Munich!” Events People Australia director Stuart Harris said Oktoberfest was a hit in Hobart. “Last year Tasmanians had the opportunity to experience the traditional bratwursts, Bavarian beer and oompah bands that characterise this unique cultural celebration when Oktoberfest Hobart was held for the first time,” Mr Harris said. “That event was a huge success, attracting more than 14,000 enthusiastic attendees and I’m sure the Geelong event will be equally as popular.” Oktoberfest is the world’s largest ‘volksfest’, or beer festival and travelling funfair. Munich hosts the event annually over 16 days from late September to the first weekend in October. More than six million people

Geelong would deliver an authentic Bavarian experience with food and drink, live music, events including best beard competitions, cow-milking, barrel races, strongman and

After the War in 1947 the couple moved to Williamstown, where Vic worked as a baker before deciding to buy the shop where he had been working and operating Victor Routley it together. Working “days” began at midnight, when they stoked up their big brick lined “scotch” oven, fired with wood or briquettes. They would put the pies in first, when the oven was hottest, followed by cakes and then the delicate sponges. In 1971, Vic and Verna Verna Routley handed on the baton to their son Lawrie and his wife Anne, who have expanded the business with the help of their five children (Simon, Penny, Michael, Kate and Sam) to what it is today. There are now also 10 great grand children, and the eldest Lawrie Routley – current CEO Michael, is now working for the business.

THE CLOSURE of a dedicated mental health program with experienced nurse clinicians will severely impact 280 patients around the region, one has warned. Newtown’s Rod Lambeth said Barwon Health’s clozapine program had six trained mental health nurses offering dedicated support to patients. The loss of the support would significantly impact many patients with issues like social isolation while increasing their out-of-pocket costs, he said. A Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) report said use of clozapine required “intense monitoring. The report said the drug could have side effects including liver problems, cardiac abnormalities, seizures and neutropenia and, a white blood cell deficiency impairing immune function. Psychiatrists were concerned costs for patients on the program “would not support good clinical care, the report said. Estimated out-of-pocket pathology costs for a patient without a concession card were $917 annually, without including the cost of the medication or additional visits to a GP or psychiatrist. Mr Lambeth said the tablets previously came in multiple sizes on one prescription but now he was charged a prescrip-

tion for each size. “I’m told I now have to see my GP for support but my GP admits he’s not a mental health expert. “People can deteriorate in a short period of time and end up back in the Swanston Centre and it will cost a lot of more money then. A lot of damage can be done in the meantime. Mr Lambeth said the region would lose a wealth of mental health experience with the program’s closure. A Barwon Health spokesperson said the Commonwealth had changed how clozapine was supplied to the community. “These changes have a direct impact on how patients using this drug are supported in the future. To support GPs we have appointed a coordinator to assist in ensuring high quality care for consumers who use clozapine as they transition to their local GP. But a spokesperson for federal Health Minister Sussan Ley denied any public hospital funding cuts to Victoria. “Australian Government public hospital funding to Victoria will increase substantially over the next four years, growing from $3.8 billion in 2014-15 to $4.7 billion in 2018-19. This represents an increase in annual funding of 22 per cent, or $860 million. The spokesperson said the changes in dispensing clozapine gave a stronger role to community pharmacies without impacting initial hospital treatment.

HAVING A SAY: Palliative care regional director Dr Peter Martin addresses the inquiry in Picture: REG RYAN Geelong this week. 142388
A GOVERNMENT inquiry regarded as a stepping stone to voluntary euthanasia received submissions, advice and recommendations during a sitting in Geelong this week. The inquiry, into end-life choices, took on board comments from the medical community and submissions about restrictive legislation, including the need for laws to allow Victorians to make informed decisions about their own deaths. The inquiry heard emotional pleas from Dying with Dignity campaign supporters, who told the inquiry “there are some things worse than death“ and that “not being able to die with dignity is the ultimate torture”. Dr Peter Martin, who addressed the hearing at North Geelong’s McKellar Centre on Wednesday, said the government faced a number of legislative challenges to existing end-of-life practices among the medical community. Parliament’s legal and social
issues committee is assessing the practices, which assist patients to manage the end of their lives, including the role of palliative care. Dr Martin, Barwon Health’s regional director of palliative care, said the authority already had an organisation-wide end-of-life strategy. But he was concerned about a lack of clarity on patient-care workers’ administration of painkilling drugs. “Not all facilities have a nurse on duty at night, that’s one of the problems,” he said. “We (also) need to look at the stress and burden on the carers of people at the end of their lives. We need to do a lot more to care for the carers.” Community hearings are hearing submissions on palliative care, including the practices of medical practitioners during end-of-life treatment. The inquiry is also considering existing legislation, international strategies and any potential changes to Australian laws.
Costa share price slides after listing reaches target THE SHARE price of Geelong’s biggest company, Costa Group Holdings Limited, has fallen to $2.10 after listing a week ago with a starting price of $2.25. The float had been priced from $2.20 to $2.70, which would have raised between $541 million and $637 million. The sliding share price indicates
wariness among investors as they take a wait-and-see approach to the newly listed stock. The company, with an Australian Stock Exchange code of CGC, is valued at $850 million. Its net profit for 2015/2016 is forecast to be $47.6 million, excluding float costs, with revenue of over $700 million this year.
Joint owners Costa and US investor Paine and Partners will retain 10.5 and 12.4 per cent stakes respectively. Now the largest grower of berries, mushrooms, glasshouse tomatoes and citrus, Costa has major joint ventures in blueberry farms in Morocco and China. In a statement, Costa Group said the market size of its categories was estimated at $3 billion in 2014.
Costa chairman Neil Chatfield said the float was a significant new phase for the company. “Through our scale, national reach and product quality we are well-positioned to capitalise on future growth opportunities, including further investment in produce categories that enable year round production and supply to Australian retailers and consumers.”

IN FOR THEIR CHOP: A crew begins the Torquay pruning works, left, leaving a heavily cut-back roadside – and an outraged environmentalist – in its wake.
Pictures: GRAEME STOCKTON
Anger at ‘chainsaw massacre’ By PAUL MILLAR A TREE-SHREDDING exercise along Surf Coast roads was an attack on the area’s biological heritage, according to a local environmentalist. Bellbrae’s Graeme Stockton said local wildlife was left climbing the extinction ladder after the severe pruning to reduce the risk of fire from trees contacting power lines.
The work had trashed a tree canopy along Torquay’s Coombes and Messmate Rds, he said. “If re-planting to restore the roadside canopy commenced tomorrow it would take some 50 years or more to put back what we already had.” Mr Stockton said the lopping might conform to guidelines but alternatives were needed. “This is death by a thousand cuts and
nobody notices it because it happens over decades ... and we don’t have a replacement program.” Mr Stockton said the pruning was “unwittingly destroying the environment around us“. “Birds, possums, bats they all use these corridors and they come along one day and they’re gone. There’s already a serious decline in woodland birds across Australia.”
Mr Stockton wrote to councillors about his concerns. “The shire’s regressive roadside safety guidelines illustrate graphically the gaping void between environmental standards by the shire and what it expects from the community,” he wrote. A Surf Coast Shire spokesman said the pruning was in line with a combination of programs to prevent fires, reduce
fuel loads, improve biodiversity and improve road safety. “Council understands that the aesthetic effect of combining the works is more pronounced. However, the works were combined to save on costs to the community.” Qualified arborists oversaw the work, which left protected vegetation unharmed, the spokesman said.

City ‘misled on rates’, says MP UNIONS are misleading Geelong workers with a dishonest scare campaign over penalty rates, according to local Liberal MP Sarah Henderson. The Abbott Government had “no plans” to change penalty rates, the Member for Corangamite said yesterday. Employees should instead fear Labor under Bill Shorten, who as a union boss signed deals with employers to “completely remove the penalty rates of low-paid workers”, Ms Henderson said. “The facts matter. The Government has no plans to abolish penalty rates or change the way they are set. “Responsibility for setting award wages and conditions, including penalty rates, sits with the independent tribunal, the Fair Work Commission. Any suggestion that the government has altered penalty rates, or has plans to remove penalty rates, is just false. “I also note that in its previous two yearly review of Awards, the Fair Work Commission decided to reduce certain penalty rates in the hospitality industry. This occurred under Labor’s legislation and as a result of a review instigated by Labor when it was in government.” Ms Henderson said she would have accepted an invitation to speak this week at a Geelong union rally to campaign for the retention of penalty rates. “At no stage was I asked to speak at the rally. If I’d had the opportunity, I would have been

PAY UP: Unionists at the Geelong Trades Hall rally. delighted to tell local workers the truth about this dishonest campaign.” ACTU president Ged Kearney said penalty rates were under threat. “Nurses, police, ambos, min-
ers, retail and hospitality workers are among the hardworking Australians who sacrifice their weekends away from family and friends,” she said. “They work nights and weekends and should be paid for that but the Abbott Government is working hand-in-glove with business groups to cut penalty rates and lower take-home pays. “I call on the local community to get behind this local campaign to save our weekends and I call on all local members of parliament to guarantee their support for penalty rates. “The truth is that cutting penalty rates has nothing to do with job-creation or productivity – it’s about cutting people’s pay packets. If you cut people’s wages they have less money to spend in shops, pharmacies and cafes – the very businesses that are driving this attack.”

Crew tackling ocean road danger ABSEILERS are clambering across crumbling Great Ocean Road cliff faces east of Lorne to stop rocks falling on passing cars. VicRoads said a team of abseilers hung off rock anchors 20 to 40 metres above the iconic road to install wire netting on the unstable cliffs
The high-flying work involved hand-removal of loose rocks and lopping vegetation over the next 10 weeks, VicRoads said. “Using wire rock netting means that major earthworks can be avoided and the aesthetic, ecological and heritage impacts are minimised, said VicRoads’ Mark Koliba.
“The visual impact of the netting will soften over time as the pre-existing vegetation regrows through the netting. “Rocks and debris regularly fall from the cliffs along this and other parts of the Great Ocean Road. These works will improve safety for every person who uses the Great Ocean Road.

‘Experts’ tell Geelong study:
Give sex crims ‘more support’ HELPING sex offenders “re-connect” with community support might be better than punitive responses such as notifying neighbours when they live nearby, according to a Geelong academic. Deakin University School of Psychology Professor Andrew Day said sex-offender registration schemes, community notification and residency restrictions had little evidence of success. Prof Day is leading a study to identify the mosteffective ways of keeping communities safe from sex offenders. The study was drawing on “the expertise of those working with offenders”, such as police, correctional staff and allied health professionals, he said. “As a forensic psychologist who has worked in prisons and hospitals providing treatment to offenders, it is clear that practitioners have a lot of expertise in managing risk.” Prof Day said the study had Australian Research Council funding to investigate registration schemes, community notification policies and residency restrictions. “There is little evidence to suggest that any of these policies are successful in making our communities safer. There are also indications that these policies do more harm than good. “Sex offenders can become socially isolated, have limited access to employment, social support and mental health services, which undermine their chances of reintegrating into the community.” Prof Day said existing one-size-fits-all policies for managing sex offenders outside jails were too restrictive. They were also less effective in preventing reoffending than policies tailored to the “individual needs of offenders“, he said. “We are seeing in our research a need for more sophisticated and integrative systems. “Community notification is almost universally regarded as counter-rehabilitative and there is widespread support for proactive case management models that engage offenders.
BEASTS OF THE GREAT SOUTHERN SUPERCONTINENT
STUDY: Professor Andrew Day. “Perhaps the most important need identified was to reconnect sexual offenders with community supports. “While restrictive policies can lead to social isolation, new programs that encourage pro-social behaviour would minimise not only the opportunity, but critically the motivation, to re-offend.” Prof Day acknowledged that managing sex offenders living among communities was a polarising issue that must carefully balance the safety of residents with the rehabilitation of offenders. The study drew a strong response from Independent Facebook followers. Commenters who read about the study online at geelongindependent.com.au generally wanted harsh punishment rather than tailored community support for sex offenders. “They should all be locked up (and) the key thrown away,“ Jenny Patison posted.

Mayor’s meter madness BOB THOMPSON (Letters, 24 July) had it in one: the mayor should have been granted leave immediately. According to a story in another paper four months ago, the mayor boasted of 250 upgraded parking meters and installation of 25 new ones but now claims to want free or reduced parking. What was the cost of upgrading/installing meters to allow payment by smartphone? Or should we not be concerned? Obviously residents are regarded as publicity fodder. Judith Fisher South Geelong
Local lore broken I THANK the Geelong Independent for its independent voice and 17 July We Are Geelong feature. However, I was bemused by some whitewashing of our history. Noel Murphy wrote how “the city started over 180 years ago‌ far from the civilised worldâ€?. I
would happily give Mr Murphy a copy of Bruce Pascoe’s 2014 book Dark Emu. It helped me understand the reality of the sophisticated culture and land management of local country by the Wathuarong people. Civilisation was right here. A couple of pages later I read a promotion of the new library “emerging from what was a reeking swamp. Yes, it became a swamp but after settlement. Before then Aboriginal people met in what is now Johnstone Park, beside the creek that flowed into Corio Bay before it was dammed by Europeans. Council provided a grant to develop a great local website a couple of years ago, so let’s learn our whole history together at djillong.net.au. Vicky Grosser Manifold Heights
Ice and firing line A MINI-ICE Age within 15 years? I have doubts about the science on which this prediction is based. In saying this, if true then perhaps it’s nature’s way of culling the sick and aged in our community to reduce ever-growing pressure on the world’s finite
resources, which leaves this writer very much in the firing line. Michael J Gamble Belmont
Put gender on agenda IT HAS been reported that the children’s hospital expects to admit 200 children and adolescents with a desire to switch genders this year. This was described as an enormous numerical advance on previous years. Is it a result of Federal Government’s Safe Schools program, which has become a ground for the promotion and defence of alternative sexual practices? Or is it a result of the flood of adulation of those who have committed to gender-switching? I support the appeal of B Whitrow (Letters, 17 July) for a more-informative discussion on same-sex marriage, which could apply to gender reassignment. Biological change is impossible with gender reassignment – every sex hormone in Caitlyn Jenner’s body is XY, male. A report by Sweden’s Karolinska Institute found

a serious risk of mental health problems 10 to 15 years after sexual reassignment operations. The suicide rate was 20 times greater than for those who had not had this surgery. These facts should be presented to the young. As with the marriage equality debate, for which the vote of a mere 37 per cent of eligible Irish voters was taken as overwhelming support, the true story is often not presented. Deviation from the traditional God-given practice of procreation in a stable family with children nurtured by biological sires is a dangerous exercise. Toilets on the nose NOW THE mayor has returned from overseas maybe he could address the appalling toilet system behind Geelong West Town Hall. Lara Central in building boom THE FIRST stages of a new Bisinella residential estate are nearing completion as a construction boom changes the face of central Lara. Development of Lara Central Estate, located about 800 metres north west of the Lara town centre, began early this year and is now taking shape in parallel with two other large construction projects, Woolworths’ major retail development and the new civic hub being created in the nearby park. These projects are underway adjacent to the new Lara Village shopping centre, which incorporates a full-line Coles supermarket, specialty stores and cafes. This was completed late last year. Development Manager Richard Bisinella said construction of stages one and two of Lara Central Estate – a total of 44 lots – will be finished in August. He said a further stage is scheduled to be constructed before the end of the year. Caddys Road, which runs through the estate, is being widened, and a new roundabout has been constructed at the corner of Caddys Road and Flinders Avenue. “With approximately 60 lots already sold, Lara Central offers people a rare opportunity to build a new home within walking distance of the expanded and revitalised town centre, Mr Bisinella said. “This prime location is also a short distance from the serenity of Serendip Wildlife Sanctuary as well as close to primary and secondary schools, the town’s main sporting precinct and Lara railway station. “Opportunities to buy land in this sort of location don’t come along often. “It’s a chance to experience the rural feel which makes Lara so special while also enjoying the convenience which comes with the central location. Residents of Lara Central will be among the few in the existing township with the advantage of an optical fibre high speed broadband connection to the home. Bisinella Developments has partnered with OptiComm to build the optical fibre network at Lara Central as well as the last 10 stages of the recentlycompleted Grand Lakes Estate. Expansion of the Lara town centre, designed to ensure that it remains the town’s main shopping and civic precinct, has accelerated over the past two years. The Woolworths development will add a second full-line supermarket, more specialty shops and an underground car park.

NONI Hazlehurst defies audiences to leave without feeling touched by her one-woman performance of an ageing, rambling homeless woman. The multi-award winning Australian actor will make her first visit to Geelong as a performer next week to showcase Mother, a gritty drama that could be based on many of the forgotten women living on the grim edge of society amid homelessness and domestic violence. The veteran performer said she had to draw on her own feelings and experiences to portray the traumatic life of Christy, a woman haunted by the events of her past. The Logie winner plays the part of a beaten woman, a mother who has suffered physical abuse but refuses to yield, telling her story to anybody who will stop for a moment, even to some who don’t want to listen. “She’s a survivor and wants to tell her story. She’s beyond caring if they’re listening, so there’s real humour there,” Hazlehurst told the Independent. She hoped the audience would adopt her own experience of feeling
“there but for the grace of God go I’’ during the show. “We’ve all been through some trauma at one stage in our lives and I use that as my own tool but it’s pretty bloody tough to bring this out.” Set in the 1970s, award-winning playwright Daniel Keene’s script tells the story a woman abused by an alcoholic father and raised by a deeply religious mother. The story is about life’s options and the devastating consequences of taking the wrong one. Christy confuses reality with fiction as she tells her story, which Hazlehurst said was a plea for understanding. “She’s not crazy, she’s just had some bad luck.” The play, Keene’s latest work and directed by long-time collaborator Matt Scholten, was especially written for Hazlehurst. The actor said the audience would be able to relate to the character because everybody at some time saw the homeless shuffling around the streets and later wondered why and what had happened to them. Hazlehurst will perform Mother at Geelong Performing Arts from 5 to 8 August.

IT’S HARD to know what Tom Burlinson is better known for – his uncanny take on Frank Sinatra or his bond with horses. Both have figured prominently in his career but it’s the singer side of Burlinson that will take the stage at Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) next week when he brings to town his new show, Now We’re Swingin’. “It may be about even now,” the show business veteran chuckled down the line from Darwin this week as he prepared to perform the musical in the Top End. As a young actor, Burlinson first found fame in the lead role of The Man from Snowy River, renowned for its iconic sequence of a supreme rider chasing wild brumbies down the steepest slope imaginable. Although that was in 1981, he claimed more horsey roles in another iconic Aussie movie, Phar Lap, and in the 2011 feature film
The Cup, which had a racing storyline, as well as The Man from Snowy River II. In between Burlinson found his voice and it was the Sinatra connection that had audiences sitting up and taking notice. Burlinson was cast as the voice of “young Frank” in the Golden Globe award-winning mini-series Sinatra, the Australian performer’s first professional singing engagement. As a child, “the man in the hat”, as the young Burlinson referred to Sinatra, was a source of fascination. He even wrote a song about him, which Burlinson performed on television’s former Midday Show. The tape of the performance won him the voice role in the mini-series. Having two strings to his professional bow made all the difference to the longevity of his career, Burlinson freely admitted. “I count myself very fortunate that I’ve been able to use other

She won last year’s Helpmann Award after a series of other accolades since first stepping out as Yana Alana in 2006. “We have some great songs and a lot of audience participation,“ said Ward, stepping back into her Alana alter ego. “I think people can really identify with the show, as most people struggle with their identity at some point in their life.” Alana said preparing for the show was time-consuming and
difficult, with covering her body in paint taking about an hour and a half and preventing her from sitting down until it was dry. Then at the end of the show it all had to be peeled off until the next performance. Alana and long-suffering accompanist Louise Goh will perform Between the Cracks during the fifth annual Lorne Arts Festtival, from 28 to 30 August. Alana hoped locals would take up to 50 per cent of the seating at the festival, with many other patrons expected to travel down the coast to see the provocative artist.

CONTROVERSIAL with the guarantee of a belly-laugh, nude cabaret show Between the Cracks is set to come out of the blue at next month’s Lorne Arts Festival. Yana Alana, a big woman by her own admission, opens her show wearing only a spray tan of blue and a wig that would take a boxfull of holding spray to keep in place. But Alana, the creation of Australian Sarah Ward, told the Independent that anybody attending Between the Cracks for titillation should go elsehere. The bold, award-winning show was more about having a laugh and exposing life’s pitfalls and drama, she explained. “The first thing the audience sees is a blue woman singing about her mental health,” Alana said. “It’s about a diva that has fallen between the cracks. The blue paint helps to expose her vulnerability as it tends to visibly expose those cracks and those cracks are what make each individual unique. “It’s raw and it’s grounded and naked and it’s a real belly laugh.” The show has been a sell-out across Australia, with Ward described as a world-class cabaret diva who takes the audience on

THE BEST yum cha has hit Geelong, halting the need for locals to drive all the way to Melbourne to experience great Cantonese cuisine. For those new to yum cha, it comprises small, traditional dishes, all with different ingredients and tastes. At Wai Bo Restaurant customers have the pleasure of choosing from 30 different yum cha options with prices ranging from $5.50 to $7.50 per dish. Committed to providing a fresh and wholesome experience for lunch or dinner, Wai Bo’s specialty chefs cook all dishes, including dim sims, fresh on-site daily.
Six years ago head chef Wai Yip Chan moved from Hong Kong when he was hired by the owner of one of Geelong’s leading Chinese restaurants, where he worked for two years. He then moved on to work in Melbourne before seeing an opportunity for authentic Cantonese cuisine and yum cha to become available in Geelong. With his extensive experience, Wai and wife Sandy have now brought both to Geelong with their new restaurant. With the addition of a special oven, customers can indulge in some of Wai Bo’s exclusive dishes such as Peking duck and bar1192865-ACM30-15

Just wanted to say how happy we were with our most recent move. We have moved 5 times in the past 7 years in the Torquay area and Geelong Removals did the best job, hands down! Lyn was such a pleasure to deal with on the phone and the guys were so efficient and happy doing their job - my stress levels melted the minute they showed up (right on the time mind you!) If you are moving and debating who to use, try Geelong Removals and you won’t be disappointed. Cheers Carla

Purchasing or selling a business can be extremely stressful. There are many aspects to the sale of a business including, finance, legals, valuations, financials and more, so obtaining the right advice is crucial. Thankfully BF Brokers Group is trading in Geelong with four different business divisions to assist customers. Director Scott Prosser is a local with extensive experience and qualifications. Scott is both a Registered Business Valuer and Certified Practicing Business Broker (Australian Institute of Business Brokers), with a Bachelor of Business Administration from RMIT and holds a diploma in finance and mortgage broking. The Business Sales, Finance, Business Valuations and General Business Advice divisions of BF Brokers Group work together to provide great customer service and accurate advice. Scott says the team is active in the small business sale market and genuinely knows what businesses are worth. “Other brokers don’t have the same knowledge that we do in regards to lenders and business purchases. “Our services are broad - one day I’ll help people finance their first home and another I’ll organise a sale of a business. “It’s very rewarding because there’s a lot involved and it can be quite complex.” BF Brokers’ five-star rating on Facebook reflects the business’s record of customer satisfaction. “We are honest with our approach and provide clients with realistic advice in regards to value and finance expectations,” Scott says. More information is available by phoning Scott on 0407 349 246, emailing scottp@bfbrokers.com.au or visiting bfbrokersgroup.com.au.

Bigger Better Bike Power Bike Power has been known in Geelong as the little shop in Belmont for the past 35 years. But after a recent relocation and transformation, Bicycle Centre Belmont is fast becoming known for its extensive range of bicycles, parts and accessories. From electric bikes to BMX, road to mountain bikes, kids’ bikes, cruisers, vintage bikes, scooters and more – it stocks everything needed in a massive new store. Bicycle Centre Belmont also offers professional repair services as a one-stop shop for all cycling needs. Basic servicing starts from just $60. The centre’s mechanics begin with a basic check list of safety requirements. “We then look at what’s required to keep the bike fully functional,” says business owner Shane. The centre’s experienced mechanics know what’s needed for cyclists of all levels. Bicycle Centre Belmont caters for many different riders, from children’s first balance bike right through to professional athletes striving for ultimate performance and precision. “We also do the simple things, from changing tyres right up to disassembling bikes and rebuilds,” Shane says. Quick turn-around is guaranteed and same-day servicing is often offered, depending on the season. “We support local athletes from multiple disciplines of cycling, who are recommended to us by their performance coaches who appreciate our professional service and knowledge in getting the right bike-fit and setup,” Shane says. “We utilise the Shimano Bike-Fit program along with our own professional expertise to ensure that every rider gets the best comfort and performance out of their bike.” Bicycle Centre Belmont is at 119 High St, phone 5244 3650 or visit bicyclecentrebelmont.com.au.

The team come to you, provide a free quote and if accepted will repair your vehicle to the highest quality finish without the inconvenience, fuss and expense of taking it to a panel shop. Most damage can be restored back to pre-accident condition within a few hours without the need for insurance claims due to our competitive pricing. With a complete colour matching system in our service vans, it’s like having a mobile paint laboratory that ensures that we can colour match all vehicles. Services offered by the Touch Up Guys include repair and respray of bumpers, mirrors, door and body moulds; stone chip and scratch repair; buffing and polishing; restoring sun affected and yellowed headlights and the supply and installation of safety reversing sensors. The Touch Up Guys team will even paint the reversing sensors the same colour as your bumper bar, giving it the most professional finish possible. For your obligation free quote contact the team at Touch Up Guys Geelong on 0414 852 477 or via email at geelong@touchupguys.com.au.

IndySport Trick kick makes point bite
On the Chris Pitman
‘Stevie’s stunner mocks age slurs’
Estuary shelter provides goods
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AMID the ongoing debate about the possible retirement of Geelong’s older players, Steve Johnson made a valid point at training this week. But he did it with his boot, not his mouth. After a tongue-in-cheek challenge from one of the training staff, Johnno steered a drop punt through an open window in the top deck of the Brownlow stand. The miraculous shot surprised Cats video and IT staff monitoring training from the lofty vantage point – and possibly caused some collateral equipment damage. But the point was made given the degree of difficulty in kicking a ball through a three-squaremetre aperture 45 metres away and 30 or 40 metres high. The feat added to a list of incredible trick shots at Kardinia Park by Johnson, Steve Motlop, Travis Varcoe and Gary Ablett. Motlop recently curled his shot through goals with a midair kick from a tight angle in a forward pocket – after heading the ball with a teammate several times. While still a Cat, Varcoe kicked a ball from the grandstand into a bin on the ground. A competition between Ablett and Johnson to kick a ball into a bin from various positions at the rear of the Brownlow grandstand is still winning You Tube hits. Johnson’s latest effort flew in the face of commentators who have decided his magic has deserted him and thus retirement awaits. Johnson’s bravado backed by a high-level skill set means he’s always a threat during a game. But coach Chris Scott has faced a barrage of questions about his older brigade at the past two media conferences. Scott reiterated the list management group would have “ongoing, respectful conversations” with players about the club’s general list-management plan. “We love these guys but we love the club just a little bit more and we’ve got to make sure we do the right thing,“ he said “They’re all different. Treating them on an individual basis is the respectful thing to do,” Scott said. “It is easy to group them all together. They’re a similar age and almost all played exclusively for Geelong and have been champions of the game. “It’s just the wrong thing for me to speak publically about those situations in detail before we’ve worked it through with them in private. “As is the case with Hamish McIntosh it is up to the individuals themselves to speak up rather than my view of what might happen by the end of the season.” Hours later McIntosh called time on his 13-year AFL career, with looming surgery for a fresh ankle injury forcing him to retire immediately. The 30-year-old arrived at the Cats from North Melbourne in late 2012 but injury sidelined him in his first year at the club.
LOCAL anglers have had another week of harsh winter conditions, with land-based opportunities producing the goods. The Barwon River estuary offers shelter from the weather for anglers to bank reasonable numbers of salmon, trevally and mulloway. The lower section of the estuary around the mouth held large schools of Australian salmon on the run-in tide. Anglers who cast soft plastics or small metal lures banked salmon to 1.5kg and trevally to 40cm as a by-catch. Mulloway were targeted further up the system, with fresh bait landing the most fish. As was the case with the salmon, the run-in tide was the most productive, especially at night. Bancoora Beach produced salmon to 1kg on Saturday afternoon, with Asari Mahi lures working well. Tackleworld Geelong’s Kevin Hunter walked the beach, failing to land a salmon but noting that other anglers present at the beginning of the run-in tide generally caught five or more fish from deeper gutters with cleaner water. Queenscliff Bight and Bell Reef fished well for good-sized squid when the weather allowed. Larger jigs did the trick when cast over thick weed and reef areas. Trevally were schooling up nearby in Queenscliff Harbour, with soft plastics such as a Z-Man grubs catching fish when cast down the main channel. Some big yellow-eye mullet also gathered in the harbour but were difficult to hook. Lightly weighted soft plastic or pieces of chicken can sometimes entice a strike from these wary fish, which then usually go hard for any nearby structure. Scott Oakly fished the Richards Channel off Clifton Springs last weekend, boating a well-conditioned gummy shark of 85cm. He also caught a Port Jackson shark before catching a nice bag of flathead. On the freshwater scene, anglers kept fishing Lake Purrumbete for trophy brown trout while trolling down deep with a downrigger. Trophy fish failed to materialise but plenty of 2kg fish were boated on lures such as Daiwa Double Clutch 75s or F-11 Rapalas. Anglers casting shallow-diving lures over the weed banks near the windmill also caught trout to 2kg. St Augustine’s Waterhole at Highton continued producing rainbow trout of 30cm. Pink Powerbait on a lightly weighted running sinker rig did the job for anglers who used the newly built jetty to get you out past the weeds. The Barwon estuary should be worth fishing if the weather remains unfavourable over the next week, along with Queenscliff Harbour for silver trevally. Freshwater anglers should try Lake Purrumbete, with all the cold weather firing up the trout.
KICKING ON: Steve Johnson hears the challenge at training this week and, at right, a Cats staffer with the ball after the miraculous kick. 142323 Pictures: REG RYAN McIntosh went on to play 19 games for the Cats in 2014 but managed just two VFL games this season due to injury. Simonds Stadium welcomes back former Cat Allen Christensen with the Brisbane Lions on Saturday afternoon when Josh Caddy plays his 50th game.
Coaches kick off GOFC to develop skill, love of game By JOSIP ZILIC
COACH: Peter Bradley hopes GOFC will enchance local soccer skills and participation.
LOCAL soccer coaches have kicked off a new initiative to develop players for higher levels of competition or just to enhance their love of the game. The GOFC initiative includes holiday clinics, school curriculum programs and opportunities for participation in tournaments around Victoria and interstate. GOFC has also formed an official partnership with A League club Melbourne City FC to deliver a Sporting Schools program, which commenced this month. Coach Peter Bradley was keen for GOFC to help develop players around the region. “I’ve seen a lot of the youth come through and there are promising signs
for our region, not only the technical ability of the players developing but also their understanding of roles within the team. This is evident in the number of the region’s youth in state and national development programs,” Bradley said. “GOFC will work with coaches to continually improve their standards. Geelong has probably the highest number of recently accredited coaches of all regional areas, which shows that the coaches are willing to learn and that clubs are embracing the pathways.” The Federal Government schools program would allow more people to experience the benefits of soccer, Bradley said. “It will take time but the signs are good, especially with the govern-
ment behind it. “Focusing on fostering a lifelong interest in sport will flow on to improve the transition of school programs into local clubs participants.” Bradley said GOFC would benefit local clubs, like NPL side North Geelong Warriors. “As coaches we all see something different in a player but we all assess against the four core skills taught in skill acquisition and they need to be performed well consistently,” he said “Identifying talent is not set in any one way but young players should always be encouraged to be challenged, competing with and against the best.” More information about GOFC is available by phoning Bradley on 0434 945 170 or emailing gofccoaching@ hotmail.com.
