This year the school is presenting Back to the Future live on stage for family and friends on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 August. The play will include a filmed backdrop featuring a hired DeLorean DMC-12 car as the play’s time machine. During filming the stars of the play Matthew, playing Marty, Isobel, playing Jennifer, and Lachlan, playing the Professor, got to take photos with the car and even pretended to go for a spin. 142454 Picture: GARY SISSONS

■ Man on bail for alleged stealing from former library site...

Copper culprit By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

1170560-ACM06-15

A MAN stands accused of looting the former Dandenong Library site of about 100 kilograms of copper tubing while he was on bail for six commercial burglaries. Mathew Leigh Horsfield, 34, applied for bail on Monday over fresh charges of burglary at the demolition site in Stuart Street, where he also allegedly stole a wheelie bin and two sets of keys. He was also charged with possession of ice, dangerous driving, driving without an interlock device, committing an indictable offence while on bail, and a suspected pro-

ceeds-of-crime charge. Police alleged Horsfield made full admissions to entering the library through a roof cavity on 21 July and removing copper tubing used for the building’s fire service. About 7.30am workers at the library demolition site tried to block Horsfield’s rented van from driving out of a nearby car park. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told Horsfield tried to drive around the workers’ vehicle but crashed into it and caused “considerable damage” to both cars. Horsfield allegedly that day sold the copper tubing to unknown scrap metal dealers in Dandenong for $1100 cash

- though the accused admitted to selling it for “roughly $450”. Detectives searched the unemployed accused’s home that day, seizing $15,000 worth of suspected stolen goods including dishwashers, washing machines, cooktops, building supplies and a CFA jacket, the court was told. They also seized $1100 cash - believed to be proceeds from selling the copper, a small amount of methamphetamine as well as the keys and wheelie bin. Horsfield allegedly told police he couldn’t remember where most of the seized items came from. He said they were probably bought

by him off the Gumtree online trading site, though he had no such receipts, he said. At the time Horsfield was on bail with a night curfew for six commercial burglaries and thefts, ice possession, drink-driving while driving without an interlock, and failing to appear on bail. Police alleged Horsfield’s ice addiction was costing him about $200 a day. Magistrate Barry Schultz said the bail application was line-ball, weighing up Horsfield’s ice-fuelled re-offending with available treatment on a CREDIT bail program. He said Horsfield’s driving offences were a significant public safety issue,

and had committed a serious burglary two months after being granted bail. “In my view he has shown a degree of contempt for a previous granting of bail.” Mr Schultz also took into account that Horsfield was likely facing a short jail term with a community corrections order. He placed Horsfield on bail with a night curfew, thrice-weekly reporting to police, and a ban on driving and on drug-use. “If you come back (to court) you will not get bail a second time around.” Horsfield is due to next appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 24 August.

Call for thaw in hot fight against drugs By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE war on drugs has failed - it’s time for a new approach. Panellists at a forum on the drug ‘ice’ called for a new approach at Springvale Town Hall on Wednesday (29 July) night. Professor Dan Lubman, a Turning Point researcher who has been part of the State Government’s ice taskforce, said it was time to ask what the community can do to address the problem. He said there were “incredibly polarised views” between legalising drugs versus “lock everyone up in prison”. The answer, he said, was “somewhere in the middle”. “We’ve been fighting a war on drugs for 40 to 50 years. “Even though there’s been an incredible investment, there’s been little change in the use of drugs.” He said if illicit drugs were legalised there would be quality control benefits because many people were damaged by ‘dirty’ drugs. On the other hand, alcohol which was legalised - also caused a massive amount of harm. Prof Lubman cited the case of Portugal which decriminalised drug use, though still punished traffickers, and found, in a “positive sign”, that drug uptake had not increased. Drug and alcohol problems afflicted 10 per cent of the population, he said, but few of them sought treatment, partly due to shame and stigma. He said governments had to balance scare campaigns which were aimed at deterring young people from using drugs with messages of hope such as positive recovery stories. The government needed to publicise that there was help available, he said. Prof Lubman said the most successful interventions in the state’s drug services were with ice users, yet there was “a whole lot of nihilism and pessimism that we can’t do anything about it”. The forum heard that the casualties of the “war on drugs” were escalating with more police and paramedics assaulted and traumatised, more users needing medical aid, and desperate family and friends scrambling for help. Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius, who oversees Victoria Police’s southern metropolitan region, said he wouldn’t advocate

Families lost in support quagmire FAMILIES and patients are being lost in a “quagmire” of drug support services, a forum on ice was told last Wednesday. Professor Dan Lubman, the director of Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre and a panelist at the Springvale forum, said: “Even those who work in it often don’t know who to call.” “It really is a quagmire.” A heart-wrenching story came from a forum audience member who applied for an intervention order against her iceaddicted nephew. She didn’t know where to turn.

When she visited a police station for help or a referral to a drug support service, the “constable” was unable to assist. Under her own steam, she eventually hunted down a Windana support service. Her nephew was in his early thirties and had been on heroin since 16. He’d spent his whole life on drugs, she told the forum. She was fearful of his erratic behaviour during his sleepless nights. She described him breaking in through the back door in search of his mother. When she told him to get off the ice, he went

legalising drugs “one way or the other”. Mr Cornelius said police were targeting the supply and manufacturing end of ice, rather than users. But there was also a need for a balanced approach that looked at demand-reduction and harm reduction. There were some echoes of exchief police commissioner and head of the national ice taskforce Ken Lay who said society couldn’t arrest

“berserk”. She recalled having an anxiety attack in the car as she drove to a friend’s place for refuge. They told her to get help. “The intervention order has now finished because (the police) hadn’t found him for five weeks or so. “He’s still doing it out on the streets. It’s just terrible that these things can happen. I didn’t expect that would happen to me.” Victoria Police’s Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius, one of the panelists and who oversees the southern metropolitan police re-

its way out of the ice problem. “I’m concerned that ice users are held up for vilification and shunned... when the community should be challenging itself on how do we reach out to those people who need our support,” Mr Cornelius said. “Yes, they can be dangerous. Yes, they can be violent. Somewhere in there is a human being.”

COUNCILLOR Maria Sampey has called for a legal second opinion on CEO John Bennie’s new contract. At last Monday night's council meeting she failed in her bid to put the reappointment on hold so Maurice Blackburn could review the agreement, which the council’s solicitor Maddocks has already approved. “I feel that there’s bias,” Cr Sampey said. “This whole appointment has not really gone according to process. I can’t see that there would be a problem of getting a second opinion. “People get second opinions all the time.” Councillors earlier this month agreed to keep Mr Bennie on when his current contract expired in October and contract negotiations proceeded. Cr Peter Brown said the Inspectorate of Local Government had reviewed the situation and was satisfied with the reappointment process to date. But he said Maddocks both drew up the contract and reviewed it, so he supported a second opinion “an arm’s length from council”. “It’s a bit like chicken soup - I don’t think it will do any harm,” he said. Cr Chea was blunt about Cr Sampey’s call. “If we don’t believe him, we need to sack him,” he said of the Maddocks solicitor. Cr John Kelly said the majority of councillors supported reappointing Mr Bennie. “We seem to be dragging it out,” he said. “I’ve never faced such a long, wound-out decision to support a CEO.” Cr Sampey’s motion was defeated seven votes to three.

Daylight robbery A MAN was robbed at knifepoint in daylight while walking through Noble Park. An attacker approached the 37-year-old victim, about 4.25pm on Friday 24 July, at the corner of Frank Street and Joy Parade and demanded his money. When the man threatened him with a 15cm knife the victim handed over his cash and his mobile phone and the robber fled.

Dr David Jacka, a Monash Health addiction medicine specialist, said the “war on drugs” had made relatively “safer” drugs such as cannabis and ecstasy as “difficult to buy” as ice. This had perversely led to more ice in the community than those other drugs. “One hundred years ago we started regulating drugs and it’s been a disaster,” he said.

gion, sounded her out after the meeting to followup on the “referral issue”. “It’s a terribly tragic thing for aunties and uncles to have to get a referral for a child,” he told the audience in response to the tale. “It’s a last resort. “We know a lot has happened before you come to see us. "His message for the audience was to seek help from agencies - drug support services as well as emergency services. “If you need help, particularly in a family violence context, the best way to get police help is to ring triple zero.”

Village principle to raise school children NOBLE Park Primary School supports a diverse community which is typically representative of the City of Greater Dandenong. Nearly 90 per cent of our students come from a non-English speaking background, representing 40 different nationalities. A significant number of our students come from refugee backgrounds so it is both a privilege and responsibility to offer additional support beyond mainstream schooling. To that end, the NPPS staff and community take the attitude that being a school is not enough - we need to present ourselves as a community organisation. The school has all of the standard curriculum offerings to ensure that all students work toward and beyond state-wide benchmarks. However, given the needs of our students and families, we need to provide additional supports, an engaging curriculum and a range of learning and wellbeing alternatives.

COMMUNITY

VOICE

DAVID ROTHSTADT NOBLE PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

The school offers small class sizes with each level of the school boasting an additional support teacher particularly to target the English as an additional language (EAL) students. They work both in the home and in small group situations with these students. As a further support to many of our students from our majority languages - Burmese, Khmer, Vietnamese and Afghan languages - we have multicultural education aides who are native speakers of those languages to support the students in the home room and their families. Many of our students come from countries where literacy is, at least initially, derived from an oral tradition and we must pay attention to that in the

nature of our curriculum delivery. We have adopted a developmental curriculum approach to learning across the entire school which manifests itself in exploratory learning (play-based) in the junior years and then as an inquiry, project-based approach as the children progress through the school. The essence of this approach is children at the centre of their learning with teachers building on their experiences at their point of need. Children reflect on their learning and what they need to know with a myriad of opportunities to talk about their progress and presentation of their work in a variety of ways. All of our learning programs are predicated on the notion that additional adults and mentors working with students is beneficial. The following programs are designed to offer enrichment and alternative modalities for learning. In most cases these are supported by partnerships the school has ac-

tively pursued to maximise the use of community resources in the form of donations and in particular volunteer help. All of these programs are supportive of diverse learning needs, provide creative responses to learning English and they build social capital. - Hooked on Books stemmed from our partnership with the Rotary Club of Noble Park, a great supporter of our school. Volunteers come into the school to hear students read with students experiencing difficulty with their reading and those least likely to have someone to read to at home being targeted. Our volunteers come from Rotary, Probus, the corporate sector and more recently students from Noble Park Secondary College. - The Kitchen Garden program, supported by a philanthropic grant, offers rich experiential learning. Students work in the garden on their designated day and produce a

meal largely from our locally-grown produce. - Enhanced Learning is an out-ofhours program supported by volunteers and finance from NAB. Enhanced Learning targets students who might be disengaged from school, need to build self-esteem or would simply benefit from additional learning. Students work on projectbased skills in an eight-week program to produce a performance piece or artefact. - Future Foundations is an artsbased program which focuses on artistic students and engages them in a 14-week program based at the school on Saturday mornings. It is also important to mention just some of the programs which support families, including our two play groups, women’s group, adult English and vocational classes. Everything we do at Noble Park Primary School is predicated on the notion that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 5 August 1915 Dandenong Patriotic League It was decided at the last meeting of the Dandenong Patriotic League to start a 1/- shilling a week fund for men to collect to provide money for the purchase of material for Red Cross work at the local Town Hall. The women of this town are doing splendid work and are in need of funds. More workers come each week and the supply of material is not adequate. They are in danger of being refused material on going to the Red Cross room. The men of Dandenong and district should see that there is sufficient money available to enable the work to be carried on. It is thought that £15 a week is needed -

which can be better gained in a systematic way. There are many men who cannot by age or circumstances be able to enlist. They cannot make shirts and knit and here is a way they can help the work of their womenfolk, who by their devotion and self sacrifice, are showing the way. MPs defend expenses By DANI ROTHWELL AND KATHRYN BERMINGHAM OVERSEAS accommodation, books and accident excess have all been claimed as expenses by Greater Dandenong MPs. The three politicians collectively spent $591,087 from 1 July 2014 to 31 December 2014. In the wake of the Bronwyn Bishop helicopter expense scandal the Journal looked into the claims made by its MPs. Bruce MP Alan Griffin took a three-month trip to America from September to December in 2014 as part of his work on the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs at a cost of $54,627. Mr Griffin travelled in the capacity of a parliamentary representative to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The cost of accommodation and meals of this trip was $49,433. Speaking from overseas this week, Mr Griffin said the costs were out of his hands.

“I couldn’t give you a breakdown in costs, I don’t have that. The accommodation was booked by the Department of Foreign Affairs, so I had no role in that,” said an agitated Mr Griffin. “The accommodation was very nice, there is no question about that. “We had a daily allowance, and I did spend all of that on my daily costs.” At the same time as this trip, fuel was claimed on his private plated vehicle in Australia. “The car was used by a member of staff and by a family member, which is perfectly within my entitlement.” Between 20 and 22 August, Mr

$165,042.87 $179,037.66 $247,005.93 Griffin racked up $380 in seven Cabcharges during a trip to Sydney for hearings of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs. He again defended the charges as reasonable costs for transportation between the airport, the hotel, restaurants and the hearing. Hotham MP Clare O’Neil is a member of the Standing Committees on Agriculture and for Tax and Revenue. Her subscriptions to publications include titles such as This Changes Everything: Capitalism Vs The Climate and The Precariat. Other questions the Journal asked included queries about the distributions in July and October which cost $18,708 and $10,914 respectively

and seeking clarification on $1500 of accident excess claimed. Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus is also Shadow Attorney-General and Shadow Minister for the Arts and a member of three parliamentary committees. He claimed a high cost for office facilities in comparison to the other politicians, at $127,504. The next highest was $76,490 for Hotham MP Clare O’Neil. A spokesperson for Mr Dreyfus said that Mr Dreyfus had since moved into an office in Mordialloc and the department was now paying roughly half the rent. “Mr Dreyfus’s office facilities expenses are higher than other MPs in the south-east primarily because the rent for his electorate office at Parkmore Shopping Centre was so high (it was comparable to renting a CBD office),” they said. “The lease at the Parkmore Shopping Centre was entered into by the Department of Parliamentary Services some years before Mr Dreyfus became the member for Isaacs in November 2007.”

Somyurek resigns but says he is innocent By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS SMALL Business, Innovation and Trade Minister Adem Somyurek has resigned after an inquiry dismissed his denials of intimidating his staff. On Tuesday, Mr Somyurek who is a Dandenong-based South Eastern Metropolitan MP - said his resignation shouldn’t be taken as an admission of guilt over allegations by his chief-of-staff Dimity Paul. “I maintain my innocence,” Mr Somyurek said. He said the inquiry had not found

him engaging in “abusive, threatening, intimidating, aggressive and inappropriate“ conduct that put his staff’s health and safety at risk. “I’m happy to report that (the) inquiry clears me of these allegations.” Mr Somyurek characterised the allegations as “payback“ from the union, the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association. A report by former County Court judge Michael Strong stated Mr Somyurek had “diminished, to some degree, Ms Paul’s confidence in her

personal safety while in the Minister’s presence” on one occasion. During that time, the minister had admonished Ms Paul after a meeting on 13 February by holding her chin in his hand and shaking it gently side-to-side, telling her to “calm down and put a filter on it”. The minister had been embarrassed by a comment Ms Paul made at that meeting, Mr Strong stated. Mr Somyurek’s conduct was found to be mainly “appropriate and professional” except for instances of him directing aggressive language,

finger pointing and allegations of incompetence at Ms Paul. On 20 May, Mr Somyurek summarily dismissed ministerial adviser Xavier Smith principally for intervening on behalf of Ms Paul after Mr Somyurek spoke to her aggressively, the report found. Mr Somyurek’s evidence on these events was found to be “unfavourable”. Mr Strong said the incidents weren’t serious enough for reporting to the Victorian WorkCover Authority.

Drunk jailed By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN involved in a series of drunken, violent assaults including a wild brawl outside a Dandenong pub has been jailed for 20 months. Masi Ayiik, 23, was also charged over punching a bystander who admonished him for urinating in public in Noble Park and for attacking a train passenger who told off the accused’s girlfriend for littering. During the brawl at the Nu Hotel in the early hours of 9 August 2014, the hotel’s security guard was attacked by Ayiik when the accused and a group of associates were denied entry because they were intoxicated. An “angry” and “unsteady” Ayiik accused the guard of being racist, and was pushed by the guard in self-defence, the court was told. In the ensuing fight, belts were swung as well as a glass and some bricks were hurled inaccurately at the guard by other

patrons. When interviewed by police that day, Ayiik said no-one landed a punch but the guard was “lucky none of us got our hands on him”. In the early hours of 6 July 2014, a “rowdy” Ayiik and his girlfriend were swearing loudly and drinking alcohol on a train that was departing from Southern Cross station, police told the court. Ayiik’s girlfriend threw a bottle on a seat. It fell off and rolled through the carriage, leading to a passenger to admonish her for littering. Ayiik slapped the passenger with the back of his hand, causing the victim’s spectacles to break. In an ensuing struggle, Ayiik ripped the victim’s jacket. A Good Samaritan, who pulled Ayiik off the victim, was attacked by Ayiik’s girlfriend who put him a headlock and scratched at one of his eyes. Ayiik later told police he felt bad about the assaults.

On a February afternoon this year, Ayiik punched a bystander in the head after the victim admonished the accused for urinating in public and stole his $200 Ray-Ban sunglasses. Ayiik’s defence lawyer said the accused was a Sudaneseborn refugee whose family had investigated moving out of Melbourne with the accused to separate him from negative peers. “Mr Ayiik is not a man that lacks insight,” the lawyer said. “He’s aware that alcohol is his issue.” Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said she took into account Ayiik’s primarily violent criminal history which had attracted prison and community-based orders in the past. She said the two train victims had suffered “serious emotional impact”. She sentenced him to 20-months’ jail - including a 12-month and two three-month concurrent sentences.

Wish fulfilled

243 Thomas Street, Dandenong

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH HIS last wish was granted with a big cheer and a round of applause as the Emerson School welcomed its new four-wheeled friend. President of the Lions Club of Greater Dandneong for 15 years and a passionate fundraiser, Ken Daff made sure an all-abilities bus would be bought with the money he and his fellow Lions had been raising since 1999. Club member and friend Deidre Cameron had worked alongside Ken for more than 14 years and said the bus was a wonderful achievement for everyone involved. “The bus is something the school really needed and it was Ken’s last wish,” Ms Cameron said. Together Ken and Deidre turned the Lonsdale Street Lions Opportunity Shop into a book shop and had been saving

every penny for something really special. “Ken had a vision for the op-shop to become a bookshop and we worked our butts off to transform it - Ken and my husband carted books every day before and after work to get it up and running and with a wonderful group of volunteers we had the bookshop for at least 10 years and together we brought up our grandchildren there,” she said. With close to $30,000 saved up Deidre, Ken and Emerson School lower school principal Diane Wright agreed on a bus and on Friday 24 July that dream came true. “I made a promise to Ken that we would do the bus and that’s why I went to Lions Clubs International Foundation for more funding otherwise we would probably still be fundraising,” Ms Cameron said. Lions International matched

their amount and together more than $54,000 went towards the Toyota mini-bus. School principal John Mooney said the bus was an extraordinary gift and had already been put to good use transporting students between the schools two campuses and off-campus excursions. “The generosity of the Lions Club will have a direct impact of enabling students with additional needs to access learning opportunities that they otherwise would not have been able to participate in - we are eternally grateful for this." The bus has been customised in memory of Ken and his dedication to the Greater Dandenong Lions Club. “We wanted that detail because it was Ken’s last donation and there are so many people in the area that knew Ken and they’ll now know that his wish was fulfilled,” Deidre said.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

23 Osborne Avenue, Springvale 9548 4155

I was touched by the story that appeared in your journal which records the life story of Nida (Nida Enjoys Thirst For Life, Journal, 6 July). It is a wonderful story and there are many such success stories as hers. But the fact remains that Australia simply cannot afford to take in the thousands, if not millions, of so-called refugees that are keen on entering this country. The war in Sri Lanka has been over for more than five years but there are still thousands of Tamils who want to come here for a better life. Like manner, there are thou-

sands in other countries too. As it is, we see people dressed in their native costumes walking the streets of our cities. They have no jobs nor will they get any jobs. For the rest of their lives the Australian tax payer will have to support them. The Australian Government takes in families like Nida’s who are genuine refugees. It has to be remembered that those families entered this country under the Liberal government of John Howard. When the floodgates opened and the boats began arriving, we got people with shady pasts and hundreds of undesirables.

I wonder whether Nida believes that we should take all these people in and eventually make this country into another Greece. We, like thousands of our countrymen, had to go for an interview, police and health reports before we were permitted to migrate. Nida is doing a great job but she should realise that Australia cannot take in everyone who comes knocking at our door, whether by plane or by boat. Hilton Nugara, Endeavour Hills. 1187118-KC24-15

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT…

COUNCILLOR Matthew Kirwan prepared several questions for last week’s council meeting after this column noted a drop in his usual steady stream of queries. “I hope tonight will be considered a return to form,” he told the meeting. He tied the knot with Jenny Frieden on 4 July and shared this photo from their big day, taken by Peter Ingamells. “IT’S good to see another Memeti making headlines instead of me,” councillor and former mayor Jim declared at last week’s council meeting. His cousin Mersim appeared in a sports pointer on the front page of the Journal on 27 July. He said the 15-year-old was on his way to becoming a professional soccer player and asked Mayor Sean O’Reilly to send him a letter of congratulations and encouragement. COUNCILLOR Maria Sampey revealed she found solace at the YWCA as a teen, during debate about the Albanian Eagles Youth Centre and Genuine Gym application last week. She played billiards at the church-based group. “It used to keep me off the street!“ she said.

WOULD you like to see the council’s Australia Day Festival roam the municipality? Councillors have discussed the possibility

of rotating the Dandenong Park event across Dandenong, Springvale, Noble Park and Keysborough. Should it stay put? Email journal@ starnewsgroup.com.au or visit www.facebook.com/DandenongJournal to share your thoughts. PERHAPS lunch was on the mind of a certain police prosecutor. Why else would he continually refer to a person in court as Ragu when their name is Rousset? HANDY advice came from one of the region’s top cops to a drug forum at Springvale Town Hall. The number one crime on the books remains theft from motor vehicles, he said “so can I ask, have all of you locked your vehicles?“ There was a round of nervous laughter as audience members glanced out to the dimlylit car park.

Those looking for work in public administration are 46 percent more likely to use print newspaper’s employment sections with similar results for mining (44 percent), and teachers and lecturers (27 percent) more likely to use print. Businesses looking to find the right candidate should employ print newspapers as part of their search, or risk missing out on a large pool of potential candidates.

an adjacent lot owned by applicant Jemal Abazi. He noted the area was zoned for light industry, so would have less impact on neighbouring residents. Cr Loi Truong called for council funding for the centre which has cost about $700,000 over the past four years without any government money. In opposition, Cr Matthew Kirwan said permit conditions, which limited the centre to 50 patrons and staff as well as closing times of 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 10pm on other days, were not strict enough to protect neighbours. Cr John Kelly said he opposed the permit because of a lack of parking, though “everyone around this table appreciates the good work Jemal is doing”.

ALBANIAN Eagles Youth Centre is set to move to a bigger home after Greater Dandenong councillors voted down council planners’ parking concerns. At a council meeting on Monday night, more than 200 of the centre’s supporters packed the gallery. Jemal Abazi, a successful businessman who runs and funds the Dandenong South centre, was frustrated with council planners after 18 months of hold-ups. “I think the council (officers) realised the councillors will go for it and met us in the middle. Obviously if you can’t come up with solutions and then come up with something in one day - I question what they are doing there.

“If (the applicant) was someone else other than me, the (proposal) would have collapsed and died. That’s the sad situation.” At the meeting, Cr Roz Blades led an alternate motion in support of the centre moving several hundred metres, to 2527 Bryants Road, Dandenong South. Cr Blades said the centre was an “essential use”, which provided a place “that felt like a family” for young people. She said the council’s strong youth team couldn’t “do it on our own”. “We need people who are nurtured, who have somewhere to go. “They’re our future.” Cr Peter Brown said more parking would be available at

INSPIRED Homes is leading the way with a new wave of virtual technology. The introduction of the Inspired Homes Virtual Tour Headset allows would-be buyers to take a full 360-degree visual record of the company’s display homes to revisit at any time. Buyers simply need to load the Inspired Homes Virtual Tour on their smartphone, slip it into the Inspired headset and they are ready to revisit their favourite Inspired display home. The Inspired Homes Virtual Tour offers an experience which is second only to physically being inside the display homes. Portability of the headset allows buyers to show their families and friends through the Inspired designs anytime, anywhere. They will no longer be limited to viewing only the homes that are available on display because Inspired Homes will also be adding virtual tours of other popular designs that can

also be inspected. Being at the cutting edge is what this company is all about as demonstrated with the introduction of the Inspired Homes Creator Tool which was introduced in 2007. Available on the Inspired Homes website, this interactive tool uses a modular system that separates Inspired Homes designs into three modules. Modules can be mixed and matched to start the creative process for buyers’ own unique designs. Once again Inspired Homes has been busy thinking outside the square to provide a unique and refreshing approach to new homes. Visit Inspired Homes to walk through the designs on display and experience first-hand the Inspired Homes Virtual Tour! Inspired Homes display is at 3-5 Serene Way, Berwick Waters Estate, Clyde North. Tucked in this quiet street in the Harrisfield pocket is this gem of a home – a versatile and unique find in the area. This original home is in great condition, but on a block size of 617m2 (approx) you have the choice to either renovate for a lifestyle of luxury or redevelop and build multiple dwellings (STCA). Whichever way you view it, you’ll be please with your future prospects.

DO NOT JUDGE BY THE COVER – if you do, you’ll miss out on one of the most fascinating, well planned and renovated homes in the area. It’s freshly revitalized for an easy living lifestyle. Beyond the elevated entry and porch, you will find solid timber floors throughout, three good size bedrooms with BIRs, a modern living with dining, open kitchen & a refreshed bathroom. Plus if you love to entertain, the undercover timber decked alfresco has plenty of room & overlooks the yard.

WE LOVE IT

DANDENONG NORTH features spacious bedrooms and living room, gas heating and cooking, all in a handy location with schools, local shops, Oasis swimming complex all within walking distance, and a bus stop at the front door.

This would be an ideal first home or investment with dual occupancy potential on 580 square metres. It is squeaky clean and well maintained with nothing to do so the new owners would be able to move straight in and renovate at their leisure or rent straight out. Sitting on a level block, this site would be ideal to either retain the existing home and build behind or knockdown and redevelop the whole site either now or in the future. However it could also be suited for medical or business purposes, subject to council approval, with its excellent main road exposure. This comfortable three bedroom home

NEW HOMES & LAND

BUILDING FRANCHISE OPENS IN SOUTH EAST Ross Morley, the head of Victoria and Tasmania for GJ Gardner Homes, believes that the balance of first home buyers as well as second and third home owners in the Melbourne south-east area suits the varied GJ Gardner Homes offerings. “While we have some simple, standard designs, our builds often incorporate a certain amount of customisation on most clients’ homes, especially those clients that have owned or built a home previously. “They know what they want and we like to accommodate.” “The City of Casey is the eighth fastestgrowing municipality in Australia and the third fastest-growing municipality in Victoria. GJ Gardner Homes is at the forefront of design and quality and the Melbourne south east franchise will be servicing this community and its surroundings for many years to come,” Mr Morley said. “Luke and Andrew, each with more than 16 years of experience in the building industry, bring a wealth of residential building knowledge and great friendly, practical customer service to their clients,” Mr Morley said. Anyone who is interested in talking with the Melbourne south east team about their next home building project can feel free to visit the office at Unit 2, 260-276 Abbotts Road, Dandenong South, or phone the office to make an appointment with Luke O’Connor on 0427 538 355.

Franchised homebuilder GJ Gardner Homes is excited to welcome the latest addition to its Victorian operations with the opening of its Melbourne south east branch today (Monday) in Dandenong South. The owners of the new franchise, Luke O’Connor and Andrew Timms, are excited to be able to continue to develop highquality affordable homes with the GJ Gardner Homes banner in the Casey and Greater Dandenong area. The building duo have a combined experience of 33 years in the building industry. Luke is a registered builder with 17 years’ experience in estimating and site management and previously as a carpenter and joiner. Andrew has 16 years of residential and commercial experience in estimating and site management. The Melbourne south east team is experienced in new homes, multi-unit sites, knockdown rebuilds, house and land, turnkey construction, townhouses and sloping blocks. “The area itself has a very diverse range of residents,” Mr Timms said. “It’s a multicultural area and has a diverse range of economic standing. “Our market is the full spectrum from first and second home buyers all the way through to higher-end inner city properties. “We work with our clients to suit their needs and budget,” Mr Timms said.

YOUR HEALTH YOUR IMAGE Medication complications

Andrew Simmons says poor training is getting people into debt.

PEOPLE who are on immunosuppressant medication are at increased risk of skin cancer. Quite a lot of people need to take long term immunosuppressant medicines such as Cyclosporin or corticosteroids. They are people who have chronic rheumatological disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus, for example. People who have had kidney, heart or lung transplants are another example.

These very necessary medicines, unfortunately, have the side effect of increasing the risk of skin cancers on the sun exposed skin. It is thus recommended that people on these medications have a routine skin check every six to 12 months and report any changing or rapidly growing skin lesion to the doctor promptly. For further information contact Sun Patrol Clinic, 48 Van Der Haar Avenue, Berwick. Phone 9769 3358.

Warning over Doctor goes with the flow fake job ads FAKE job ads and dodgy doorknockers are swindling up to $30,000 each from south-east students. Some have racked up the debt without even attending a class, warned South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) CEO Andrew Simmons. “I’ve had conversations with at least a dozen, but I’d imagine the numbers would be higher,” he said. Mr Simmons said some registered training organisations (RTOs) were signing up unwitting students to get their hands on Federal Government funding. “There are some really good RTOs out there and we don’t want to tarnish everyone with the same brush,” he said. “But we’ve got RTOs or brokers who are literally doorknocking. “They’re promising laptops or tablets or gift cards as incentives for people to enrol. “We’ve got kids who are being sold courses and racking up huge financial debt through the

Federal Government without even attending a class.” He said some RTOs were advertising job positions that didn’t exist. When applicants arrive they’re told they don’t have the qualification and are encouraged to sign up to complete the required training. “Training seekers need to be really aware of what they’re signing into and the consequences,” Mr Simmons said. “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” He said some swindled students were subsequently missing out on proper training because they couldn’t access any more government funding and couldn’t pay upfront. He urged training seekers to ask RTOs where their graduates worked before signing up. “If it’s an early learning centre, call and ask what they think of the RTO,” he said. Mr Simmons said SELLEN surveyed school leavers for the State Government’s Track Connect project and received several reports about scams. He said they lodged complaints with the Victorian Reg-

istration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) and Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and investigations were ongoing. Mr Simmons said the Review of Quality Assurance in Victoria’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) System released on 29 June also identified issues in the training sector. The State Government pledged to implement the report’s 19 recommendations and announced a $9 million blitz on low-quality training providers. Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert this was “a crucial first-step in ensuring Victoria’s training system is the best it can be by removing providers that provide poor or fraudulent outcomes which do not meet industry standards”. SELLEN is a communitymanaged network of southeast organisations interested in working to give 10 to 19-yearolds a better go at successfully moving through the education system to employment. It has about 250 members including schools, TAFEs, businesses, youth welfare agencies and individuals.

HAND Brake Turn is aiming to change even more lives through training. The Dandenong automotive centre has opened applications to anyone aged 15 years and over, removing its previous age cap of 22 years following community demand. Not-for-profit Concern Australia runs five nine-week courses hands-on, full-time automotive training course at Hand Brake Turn (HBT) each year. It covers panel beating, motor mechanics, car detailing, occupational health and safety and more and students who complete it achieve a Certificate II in Auto Body Repair. The next course starts on Monday 10 August. Requirements include basic literacy and numeracy skills, a willingness to learn and gain employment and a genuine interest in the automotive industry.

Park protest pressure By CASEY NEILL MORE than 60 people braved bitter weather conditions to battle for Springvale parkland. The Save Glendale Reserve group held a barbecue at the site on Sunday 26 July. City of Greater Dandenong has proposed selling neighbouring 75a Whitworth Avenue to Minaret College for $1.15 million to build a new kindergarten. The school leases a dilapidated kinder on the land but plans to end its tenure this year and leave the building vacant. Save Glendale Reserve wants the council to keep the land and demolish the kinder to create more open space. Brendan Nicholl said councillor Roz Blades and mayor Sean O’Reilly

attended the barbecue and that the council would vote on whether to sell the land on 10 August. “Time is crucial, therefore, to have some influence on the councillors’ decision,” he said. “I hope they will stand for community as opposed to private interest. “So far, well over half of our park has been sold to Minaret College. “The college can see themselves as winners already whereas the residents to date have been the losers.” Mr Nicholl said the council should retain the land “to stabilise this small remnant of park”. “It is not fair that we should lose this valuable asset so needed by the local community,” he said. “Families need parks close to home. Here it is already.”

Depot site’s $11m sale set to fund masterplan quality residential development and the best of those put forward. “But this site - next to the upcoming new Springvale community precinct - is an ideal one to make a decision that maximises community benefit,” he said. “One way of doing this was to support an aged care facility or retirement home for older Springvale residents, as older residents have the time and inclination to make the most use of council community facilities and this would have put them

By CASEY NEILL THE sale of a former Springvale council depot site for $11 million will help to fund the $25 million Springvale Civic Site Masterplan. On Monday night last week councillors agreed to sell the 20,000 square metre site at 32-40 View Road to developer Met510. Councillor Matthew Kirwan agreed that the preferred tenderer was a high-

within walking distance.” Cr Maria Sampey also said aged care would have been a better choice, because the city was ageing and waiting lists were “unbelievable”. But Cr Peter Brown said the tenders including aged care were below the site’s sworn valuation, so the council could not legally accept them. He said doing so would also have resulted in the council spending $3 million to subsidise a private operation instead of

on the Springvale Civic Site Masterplan. Cr Brown said the preferred tender was not the highest, but did provide the best outcome. “When we sell land, what do we want for the outcome on the site and the neighbours?” he said. Cr Roz Blades said “tenders aren’t all about money”. “Tenders are a bit about a vision as well,” she said.

Council sets up charity A NEW council charitable fund will help Greater Dandenong groups support the municipality’s most needy. At their 27 July meeting councillors voted to establish the Greater Dandenong Charitable Fund to complement other community and government funding. Individuals, groups, agencies and businesses will be able to contribute to the fund under a tax-deductible umbrella. The council will appoint an advisory panel to promote fund-raising activities, advertise grant opportunities and make recommendations about allocating funds. It will include the mayor and a councillor, a senior council officer, a Lord Mayors Charitable Foundation representative and independent community representatives. A report said the fund would “encourage community and business donations to support the important work of local charitable organisations”.

TAX TIME

Ten tips make for ATO’s happy returns IN 2015 more than 12 million Australians are expected to lodge a tax return and the Australian Tax Office will probably have to contact more than 350,000 of them to correct mistakes. These ate the ATO’s top tips for getting tax right the first time. One - myTax makes life easier Preparing tax returns has never been easier than with online lodgement service, myTax. It only asks questions relevant to the person lodging and automatically includes information provided by employers, banks, government agencies and other third parties. This year people who lodge electronically will receive their notice of assessment and tax receipt straight to their myGov inbox. Two - Get App-y Now myTax is available through the ATO app. It can be used to track the progress of a return and see how quickly a tax

debt can be paid off with a payment plan. The ATO app is available for download via the Apple App Store, Google play and the Windows Phone Store. Three - Pre-fill makes it easier Each year, the ATO is given more than 600 million pieces of data by employers, banks, government agencies and other third parties to pre-fill tax returns. For many people, this means all they have to do is double-check the information the ATO has pre-filled for them, enter any deductions they have and then hit submit. Four - Don’t miss out on deductions The ATO wants to make sure that no-one misses out on the deductions that they are entitled to which is why it has put together some easy to understand guides on the most common deductions so everyone can work out what they can and cannot claim. They include items such as vehicle

and travel expenses, including travel between work and home, clothing, laundry and dry-cleaning expenses, gifts and donations, home office expenses, interest, dividend and other investment income deductions, selfeducation expenses, tools, equipment and other assets. Five - Get your facts right Omitting income is the most common mistake the ATO sees on tax returns. It is important to report all income, including pay from second jobs, foreign income, bank interest and any government payments. Many of the other common mistakes are easy to avoid. By simply checking that tax return details are complete and correct will avoid any unnecessary delays. Some common errors to avoid include supplying an incorrect TFN, spelling errors in your name, supplying incorrect bank account details, providing the year of birth rather than

the full date of birth, not completing the income test and/or spouse details, lodging duplicate returns for the same year, incorrectly using the additional information schedule. Six - Over claiming can cost Although we want to make sure noone misses out on their deductions, we will also be on the lookout for those trying to claim more than they are entitled to. This year we are focusing on unusually high work-related expense claims across all industries and occupations. We will also be paying particular attention to claims that have already been reimbursed by employers, and for private expenses such as travel from home to work. Seven - Be aware of what’s changed Some changes that may affect taxpayers are that mature-aged worker tax offset has been removed, which means it cannot be claimed on the 2015 tax return and taxpayers will be only eligible

to claim the net medical expenses tax offset if they received it in their 201314 tax assessment. Eight - Easy-to-fix accidents The ATO knows that most mistakes made on tax returns are accidental and in most cases they are easily fixed and there is no penalty. Nine - Get sorted by 31 October Make sure tax returns are lodged before the 31 October deadline to avoid penalties. Ten - Age-old advice for using a tax agent Most registered tax agents have special lodgement schedules and can lodge returns for their clients after 31 October. For anyone thinking about using a tax agent for the first time or a different one to last year, it is important to contact them before the end of October to qualify for their lodgement dates and avoid penalties.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Navigation aids on the way By CASEY NEILL SEALITE CEO Chris Proctor had breakfast guests giggling last week when he recounted the time he failed to heed his own product’s warning. He spoke at the 29 July Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Premier Regional Business Awards event at Sandown Greyhounds about the marine navigation aid company’s beginnings in a Mentone garage in 1983. He also shared the time he crashed an 11-tonne boat into an underwater boiler marked by a Sealite buoy, putting a hole in the hull. “We were so excited that it was our product in the water that we forgot it was a hazard marker,” Mr Proctor said. His father was an electronics hobbyist who took inspiration from lights at a Beaumaris aquaculture farm. He told the farmer he could design a better product and spent the next 15 years making them in a shed. They now have 120 staff across a factory in Somerville and sites in the US and UK. Mr Proctor took over the business about five years ago and his father moved into semi-retirement - albeit unsuccessfully. “We had a retirement party and everything and we brought out a cake and he showed up on the Monday,” he laughed. Mr Proctor completed a Bachelor of Science in 2002 and added a Masters in Marketing. He put his skills to full use when a potential French client wanted to meet at the company premises. He asked his lawyer to borrow a conference room at his Collins Street office, hung a Sealite sign on the door and told the customer their facility was too far away, so they kept an office in Melbourne. “We were literally in a tin shed at that stage,” he laughed. The company has expanded into aviation lighting and Mr Proctor now has his eyes on bases in Asia and the Middle East.

Talent spotting is the battle for industry “THE battle for manufacturing is as much a battle for talented people as anything else.” This was the key message from guest speaker Professor Geoff Brooks at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Premier Regional Business Awards breakfast at Sandown Greyhounds on 29 July. He said many talented students eyed medicine or law studies. “We need to convince them to follow this path,” he said. Prof Brooks co-ordinates and develops manufacturingrelated research and education across Swinburne University of Technology and is a metallurgy expert. He spoke about the future directions of manufacturing. Prof Brooks graduated as an engineer in 1983 and “got the research bug” a few years later. He drove to Melbourne

The Premier Regional Business Awards are designed to profile and highlight successful businesses in the region. They’re now in their 25th and final year so this year’s breakfast events will highlight successful businesses from the awards’ past and newcomers with a bright future. A gala dinner next March will cap off the celebratory year. Carl Bizon spoke about former winner TriMas, known as Horizon Global since 1 July. He said innovation was about making the most of new materials and technology, business models and approaches, and novel designs and products. Prof Brooks said the digitisation of design had enabled testing in virtual environments, speeding up the prototyping process, and rapid sharing that removed borders. “I don’t think we’ve fully recognised the potential of it,” he said. He said technology also made finding specialised

the region. “It’s a big decision when everyone is leaving the country,” he said. “It’s the best thing we ever did.” Youth Enterprise Award nominee Emily Whitehead, 19, from Somerville, is studying tourism at Chisholm Institute. Emily’s teacher Vera Pyne said she passed her Certificate III with flying colours on Tuesday and would start her Certificate IV in coming weeks. Ms Pyne said Emily was willing to learn and grow, achieved at least 90 per cent in all of her assignments and was punctual despite her part-time job involving late hours.

skills and new ideas easier than ever before. “That’s a huge benefit of the world we’re living in at the moment,” he said. Prof Brooks urged guests to take inspiration from the late Steve Jobs’s efforts at Apple. “Make the consumer experience the heart of how you develop a product,” he said. Vacuum developer James Dyson set out to remove the word hoovering from the world’s vocabulary, vowing to make a better product. Prof Brooks said this was an example of determination to follow through on a clever idea. He also paraphrased 2012 Young Australian of the Year Marita Cheng who said the country needed to encourage children to become makers, not just consumers. “You’re a city of makers and you should be very, very proud of that,” he said. - CASEY NEILL

“She always says good morning with a smile - followed by a yawn,” she laughed. Emily said she dreamed of managing a travel agency in five years’ time but would also happily work in a hotel or resort. “I just want to get into the industry,” she said. Guest speaker Professor Geoff Brooks spoke about the future directions of manufacturing. He’s responsible for co-ordinating and developing manufacturing-related research and education across Swinburne University of Technology. His expertise is in the metallurgy field.

Manufacturing lobby group push to spread wings into south-east THE region’s manufacturing mouthpiece plans to grow its non-Dandenong membership. South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) held its AGM at Sandown Racecourse on Thursday 30 July. President Simon Whitely told the 150-strong crowd that SEMMA had about 200 member companies, only 40 per cent based in Dandenong. “With support from a number of regional councils we are seeking to reposition SEMMA beyond the boundaries of our historical Dandenong base, with the ambition to unite the manufacturing sector of the entire region,” he said. Executive officer Adrian Boden encouraged members to inform SEMMA of the issues they were facing and possible solutions. “I am always ready to meet with any company looking to extend its network,” he said. “Collaboration among our members will not only increase the local pie but improve our capabilities. “Between our companies,

SEMMA doubled its presence at this year’s AusTech expo during National Manufac-

turing Week, hosting 13 manufacturers plus City of Greater Dandenong, CSIRO and Swinburne. It took part in automotive industry discussions and continued to advocate for the Port of Hastings. “This whole region is a significant player in that sector and we have to think 20, 25 years ahead, not five to six years ahead,” Mr Boden said.

Heart’s in land of hope

IN BRIEF Snow stopper MORE than 30,000 people flocked to Springvale Snow Fest - almost 10,000 above predicted numbers. But there’s room for improvement, Mayor Sean O’Reilly said at last Monday night’s City of Greater Dandenong council meeting. He said festival-goer feedback was that the snow trucked in from Mt Bulla didn’t meet their expectations. “If we’re advertising a snow fest, the snow’s got to be good,” he said. “If you’re running a pizza shop the pizza has to be good. The pasta doesn’t have to be good.” Councillor O’Reilly suggested selling timeslots rather than entry tokens next year to cut down on queuing.

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS PHOTOJOURNALIST Barat Ali Batoor, who has chronicled hot-spots in Afghanistan and Pakistan, was surprised by what he found in, of all places, Nhill. In a matter of days, Batoor immersed himself into the world of a Burmese Karen refugee community that has injected “new life” into the rural town. He captured portraits of refugees settling with success - farming vegetables, toiling in a duck factory, learning at school and “the most colourful citizenship ceremony I’ve seen”. “I was thinking it would be a new community struggling to find work but I was surprised to see they’re doing very great. “They’re a very important part of the Nhill community and were warmly welcomed.” Batoor said 70 of the refugees were in full-time work as well as more employed as rangers at Werribee Mansion. Batoor’s works are part of settlement agency AMES’s 2015 Heartlands photographic exhibition Seeking Safety which opens in Dandenong on 6 August. It also features images of refugees captured by Abdul Ibrahim, Conor Ashleigh and Andy Drewitt. Batoor has recently returned from Pakistan where he has been shooting a documentary retracing his extraordinary journey from Afghanistan as a refugee. “It is a hard and dangerous journey. I’m finding some other stories, meeting many people affected by terrorism and bomb blasts.” In 2012 Batoor fled for his life from Afghanistan after bravely exposing the under-reported prostitution of ‘dancing boys’ by the nation’s warlords in an artfully-shot picture essay. Other photo essays have documented the Hazara community in Dandenong, a

He also took Walkely-winning photos of his treacherous epic journey through south-east Asia, including an aborted trip to Christmas Island in a sinking boat and an escape from an Indonesian detention centre. He plans to complete the project with

a trip to Indonesia this year. AMES chief executive Cath Scarth said the exhibition aimed to create a “conversation about our perceptions of refugees”. “I think it should remind people that many of us living here in Australia, at some point, came from somewhere else,” he said. The exhibition is at Walker Street Gallery on the corner of Walker and Robinson streets, Dandenong, from 6 to 31 August.

All together for service By CASEY NEILL THE new Ermha headquarters is more than an office space - it’s a community. And the Dandenong South space is increasing staff productivity and the notfor-profit’s ability to serve people in need throughout the south-east. Ermha supports people facing challenges resulting from a disability, mental illness, homelessness, or experiences of trauma or substance use to live the life they choose. Its 200-plus team members had been running between four buildings on Robinson Street in Dandenong to find space for a meeting, chat to a colleague or pick up a document. At the end of June they came together in a new head office in the Estate One precinct on the Princes Highway. “It’s actually been quite exciting for all the staff,” Ermha marketing and communications executive director Christine Thornton said. “It’s created a new environment that’s more of a community, more of a family feel. “With the different sites we didn’t get that chance to integrate with all the other programs. “I feel like we have so much more productivity. “I feel like I’m much more productive having everybody around and being able to see where people are, so you can go have a conversation with them right away instead

of being hidden in little spaces.” Ermha took the move as an opportunity to introduce hot-desking. “The exciting thing about that is all different levels of the organisation are working with everyone,” Ms Thornton said. “Because they’re sharing hot desks and they’re all in the same area, there’s a lot more cross-communication between the programs. “I feel like we’re providing more coordinated services.” She said the new space was bright and open, but had breakout rooms for when staff needed quite time or a client meeting. “The clients absolutely love it. They’re starting to feel very welcome,” Ms Thornton said. She said Ermha had been expanding at a rapid rate and outgrew its spaces. “It was never our plan to have four leases in four different buildings. It was just meeting demand,” she said. “We couldn’t just go out and move our head office every time we got a new contract.” So Ermha signed a seven-year, $411,445 per annum lease for a 1349 square metre space at 81-125 Princes Highway. “We are still maintaining our drop-in space at 65 Robinson Street,” Ms Thornton said. “We knew we still needed to maintain our representation in the CBD of Dandenong.”

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH ALONG with the rest of Australia, Dandenong took to Tatterson Park and Fotheringham Reserve for a whole lot of planting. A part of Planet Ark’s National Tree Day, the City of Greater Dandenong and fellow gardeners marked the campaign’s 20-year anniversary by planting flowering goodenia and basket grass in Dandenong on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 July. This year’s theme of You Can Grow So Much focused on the wealth of opportunities that nature can bring to people’s lives and Mayor Sean O’Reilly said the day was about planting seedlings and being a part of the plan to green parks and reserves, support local wildlife and beautify the city. “Planting days are a great way to experience nature and meet other like-minded people within your community,” Cr O’Reilly said. Participants brought along a pair of their own gardening gloves and a hand trowel and got their hands dirty for a green cause. Green thumbs were also treated to a nature walk after their hard work and a barbecue lunch. Alex Moodie from the council’s bushland management team said 600 indigenous grasses, sedges, rushes and shrubs were planted at Tatterson Park and 1102 at Fotheringham Reserve. “It was a very successful weekend and it’s always great to get the community involved in improving habitat values of the two sites and reintroducing homes and foods for the local fauna,” Ms Moodie said.

Clydesdale hits an Opals’ stride By JARROD POTTER SOMETIMES reality can exceed even your wildest dreams. Earning an Australian Opals’ debut at her Dandenong Basketball Stadium home-court on Monday night was beyond belief for Endeavour Hills’ basketballer Aimie Clydesdale. Clydesdale, 21, is in the midst of a year beyond compare as she goes from strength to strength wherever she is assigned, including her first national senior selection. Earning her Australian Opals call-up, after impressively battling the rest of the world at the World Uni Games in South Korea last month, Clydesdale’s inaugural campaign with the country’s senior women’s team was a resounding success. She featured in all three clashes against Japan - held in Dandenong, Frankston and Ballarat recently - as the Opals claimed the series 2-1. “It was a great experience - something that I was really happy to be a part of,” Clydesdale said. “Got to make my first debut game for the Opals on my home court, so it was really amazing. “It was a real honour - the Opals don’t play in Australia very often, so I was really lucky to get that opportunity and the home crowd gave me a big welcome… I was really happy to be a part of it.” It all comes back to that first step on court Monday - her court ever since starting out as a junior Ranger - as Clydesdale was subbed in to join the elite pantheon of Australian Opals representatives. “Probably just my first call up onto the court

for my first game,” Clydesdale said. “We were playing 14 players so I wasn’t sure when I was going to hit the court or if I was going to hit the court. “When I made my first sub into the game I think that was probably a really special moment for me - I was a bit nervous about it but really excited as well.” It adds yet another layer to an impressive year for the pacey point-guard, but it’s all driven by her tenacious appetite to improve. “It’s been a massive year for me - it’s what you wait for, you put all the hard work in, in hope that something like this is going to happen… I feel really luck that I was asked to be part of the Opals’ squad… from that moment on it’s all gone upwards and will only keep going upwards,” Clydesdale said. “I’ve just got to keep on top of it - keep working hard - and hopefully have a really good WNBL season… we’ll see what happens from there.” Australian Opals’ coach Brendan Joyce said he wanted to promote Clydesdale quickly through the ranks as she has the potential to become a major part of Australia’s basketball future. “We’ve identified that she has some really good physical traits and good basketball skill, so we really wanted to involve her and expose her to an opportunity at the World Uni Games and also the Opals’ camps to expedite her development,” Joyce said. “She’s done a really good job - we are certainly about exposing players not only for now but for the future. “Aimie is very quick and she’s got a good in-

Awards highlight region By JARROD POTTER STARTING a new tradition of awarding our sporting best, the City of Greater Dandenong’s first annual Sports Awards highlighted how many great sportspeople and administrators the region holds. Bringing together Dandenong’s sports community - from football, cricket, athletics, rugby league and many other codes - the region celebrated the brilliant achievements of athletes, clubs and volunteers throughout 2014. Announcing the winners on Wednesday evening at Shepley Oval, Dandenong’s finest were acknowledged after an extensive nomination process. Taking out the major awards for athletes were Sifan Badada (Springvale Little Athletics Club), Dandenong Women’s cricketer Carin Eastburn and Lifestyle Martial Arts rising star Aaliyah Corles. Michael Selio (South East Titans RLC) was named Dandenong’s coach of the year for his work in rugby league, with Catherine Green highly commended for her work at Koala Gymnastics. Others to impress came from Noble Park as the Tennis Club’s SAIL Project, helping encourage Sudanese immigrants and the Bulls’ under-13 team winning the 2014 South East Juniors premiership.

By JARROD POTTER EIGHT Dandenong Stingrays have been handpicked by AFL recruiters to test at the prestigious AFL National Draft Combine later this year. Needing at least five AFL clubs to show an interest to get a nomination, the Stingrays’ stars are part of the 75 best prospects for this year’s draft. The combine is the final scouting tool available to AFL clubs ahead of October’s national draft and the Stingrays’ eight will be assessed based on endurance, speed, jumping capability, kicking, handballing and psychometric evaluations. Beaconsfield Football Club in particular is extremely well represented with 2014 Casey Cardinia premiership winning pair Brandon White and Thomas Jok earning selection on the back of exceptional work in the Vic Country, TAC Cup and schoolboys systems. The other two Eagles set to soar at the combine are national champions Tommy Glen and Bailey Rice. Three All Australians - Keiran Collins, Jacob Weitering and ruckman Gach Nyuon - were part of the final 75 as well as fellow national championships winner Kurt Mutimer. Dandenong Stingrays’ region manager Mark Wheeler said it was proof positive of the Stingrays’ exceptional list to get eight members into this select group. “As a club we’re extremely happy,” Wheeler said. “To have eight out of one club - we always thought we had a strong year and always thought a really deep list and it’s proving that. “They’ve all done the work and now it’s just about finishing it off.” Gippsland Power had five make the shortlist with Warragul twins Ben and Harry McKay

Rangers sitting on top of the SEABL East Conference and set to feature prominently in finals. Clydesdale’s gaze then shifts to the 2015/16 WNBL season.

The Burra’s new game plan By JARROD POTTER SFL DIVISION 2 - Round 15 ADJUSTING to life without two preeminent pieces of their potential premiership puzzle, Keysborough managed to knock off a fast-starting Springvale Districts to record win number 13. Without star forward Tyson King and club cult hero Corey Wilkinson, Keysborough has to rearrange the decks and find new options in its pursuit of an inaugural SFL finals’ campaign. While the side had trouble starting afresh without the power-packed tandem, there was more than enough firepower from a team-wide performance to boot 20 goals and ease home against Springvale Districts. The first quarter was played on the Demons’ terms for the first 15 minutes as the efforts of Rob Johnston and Dylan Bramble made life in the Keysborough forward line difficult. Districts’ Luke Morrey (3 goals) found some open space to leave the Burra’s battle an uphill one, just to maintain their lead at the first break. It was up to the Burra to strike back - with Richard Minney and Glen Hawthorn rebounded with aplomb across the Demons’ forward 50. It brought into the match Keysborough’s notso-secret forward weapon to replace King - with the big buckets of Davor ‘Moose’ Rajic put to the test. Rajic (8 goals) was sensational in the forward line - with most passes sticking square in his big dukes, while his kicking was just as promising. Matt Collett (4 goals) and Bryce Sutton (3 goals) also lined up to join the party as Keysborough charged home to take the 92-point win. The match devolved through the remaining stanzas as Keysborough booted 15 goals to three following quarter time - a sensational turn around after the Demons’ early surge. Burra coach Ryan Goodes said the new-look structure was taken to by everyone and he was pleased to see the whole side step up. While Keysborough will have to adapt to the

Doveton Eagles received a belting in the other SFL Division-2 match in the local region, downed to the tune of 98 points by Oakleigh District.

SFL DIVISION 3 - Round 16 LYNDALE has defeated Sandown by 12 points,

Endeavour Hills was narrowly knocked over by seven points against Moorabbin, while Hallam and Dandenong were both beaten soundly by Black Rock and Mt Waverley respectively.

EFL DIVISION 1 - Round 15 THEY had to do it the hard way. Once again the sleepy Bulls almost left their rampage towards the final siren too late, but were able to brush aside Blackburn by eight points. Five-goals down at quarter time was reminiscent of last week’s troubling start against North Ringwood, but this time around there was no quick spree in front of goals to amend the slow start. From all parts the Bulls chipped away at the lead with experienced trio Tim Harper (3 goals), Kyle Martin and Ziggie Alwan (2 goals each) rattling off the majors.

It took until the final term for Noble Park to gain the lead as Blackburn faded away and couldn’t hold on. Noble Park maintains second spot in Division 1 and faces Norwood on Saturday at home.

VAFA DIVISION 2 - Round 15 ST JOHN’S cantered past South Melbourne Districts 25.12 (162) to 6.8 (44). A 14-goal opening half put the result to bed early as Aaron Thornton (7 goals) and Carson Strobel (5 goals) were unstoppable in the forward-50. Glenn Costas, Dan Cattolico and Corey Ladson were the JOCs’ best afield. St John’s sits outright second in Division 2 before hosting Monash Gryphons.

VAFA DIVISION 4 - Round 15 MASALA was soundly beaten by 152 points as Westburn Grammarians put the Tigers to the sword.

Cougars charge on through By JARROD POTTER BIG V - DIVISION 2 FINALS STEPPING up under post-season pressure, Keysborough booked its place in the BIG V Division-2 Men’s semi-final after storming Craigieburn’s house and running off with the come-from-behind 88-81 victory. Putting to bed some of the memories of the 2012 BIG V grand final - where Craigieburn came from behind to knock over Keysborough in the three-game series - the Cougars had to work hard to edge past the Eagles by the final siren. Craigieburn flew out of the gates - extending a 50-41 lead at the half with their home court advantage showing its true value. But the relentless pace from coach Nathan Vogt’s flat-out offence started to grind the Eagles down in the second half. Malcolm Heard (26 points, 11 rebounds) put another all-star effort in the bank as he smashed apart Craigieburn’s defences under the rim. Andrew Lowe (9 points, 11 rebounds) nearly snared a doubledouble off only 20 minutes courttime in a superb performance while John Constance (12 points) - hitting clutch free throws late - and Steven Haddrell (10 points) kept the scoreboard ticking over. Not even the efforts of former

Keysborough point guard Eric Miraflores (25 points) could halt the Cougars’ charge towards the next playoff stage. Vogt said he wanted to put the Eagles’ bench under pressure and send the game into a frenzy the home side couldn’t match. “Basically we knew they weren’t going to go too deep, so the whole time we just tried to create a hightempo game and keep running them and hopefully crack them in the third or fourth quarter, which we did,” Vogt said. “We spent most of the night behind and according to the statistics we only spent 11 minutes in the lead... so one stage we were 12 points down in the second term, brought it back to nine at the half, and we outran them in the third and consolidated the game in the fourth to bring it home.” Keysborough will face Western Port away in the semi-final, with a time and date yet to be announced. “The advantage for us is that Western Port hasn’t played a game in two weeks,” Vogt said. “We match up well against them and have got a bit of a rivalry with them so it should be good.” Dandenong’s SEABL teams played Ballarat on Sunday afternoon after the Journal went to print.

By JARROD POTTER GIVE him a ball, a bat or generally anything related to sport and Mohi Kahui will likely step up and star. Kahui, 14, from Noble Park, is a true sporting polymath - whenever he steps foot onto any sporting arena he excels. His sporting list at the moment is getting longer by the day: touch football, rugby, Australian football, netball, track and field athletics and baseball. After representing Victoria in baseball earlier this year, Kahui will add another stellar sporting achievement to his ever-burgeoning resume as he becomes a state touch football representative. The Keysborough College student will have to battle against his home nation - New Zealand - but he’s ready to fly across the wings to take on the challenge at the Pacific School Games. “It’s pretty cool as I haven’t played touch for a couple of years,” Kahui said. “I’ve played it on and off for about one year. “I like to play middle, halfback and wing - my favourite is probably wing, so I can step people and score the tries and set up the tries as well. “I think I’ve got a couple of friends in that team (New Zealand) - but it will be pretty hard versing them as they’re pretty good.” Balancing his love of all these different codes is challenging, but that’s the only way Kahui knows how to get into his sport - giving

Whether infield, outfield or sacrifice hitting for the greater good of his side, Kahui loved his time playing baseball for Victoria and will likely find himself on the diamond in years to come for his adopted state. “Just the atmosphere - it was good up there... just playing against the other states was pretty cool,” Kahui said. Kahui would love to pursue a professional life in sport... but he’s going to have to experiment with his favourites for a bit longer to find out which one is his true passion. Kahui wanted to thank his parents and In2Fitness Health Club for their support. The Pacific School Games are held in Adelaide from 21 to 29 November.

RAIN, hail or shine, Fernando Bale will prevail. That was the verdict at Sandown Park on Thursday evening after greyhound super star Fernando Bale claimed his 23rd win from his last 25 starts in a heat of the Victorian National Sprint Championship. Fernando Bale was sent to the boxes as the $1.10 favourite - the 14th consecutive start in which he’s started as the odds-on favourite - and the cold, wet and windy conditions did nothing to temper his explosive early speed, pinging from box 3 to lead Kayda Shae first time past the post. To the surprise of many, Fernando Bale moved off the rail through

the first turn, allowing Kayda Shae to rail through and draw level with the seven-time group race winner. However Fernando Bale showed the extraordinary speed that has made him Australia’s premier sprinter, going on to win for the 26th time in his 32 career starts and be guaranteed a berth in the Nation Sprint Championship Grand Final. While his winning time of 29.34 was a long way outside of his best time at the track, it was still the fastest time recorded on the night (his 20th win in best of night time). Indeed, the next fastest heat winners - Margins and Ronray Spirit - registered victories in 29.60. Sandown Park is giving one lucky patron and a friend the chance to see Fernando Bale chase an unprecedented sixth Group-1
