THE ELDEST daughter of missing Bannockburn mother Lorrin Whitehead has put her on top of a wedding guest list, hoping she will be on her bridal table. Amelia Kaiser said she should be spending quality time with her mother, discussing bridal dresses and invitations but feelings of unexplained loss have dulled her excitement. Ms Whitehead, born in 1971, disappeared without trace from Bannockburn in February 2013, leaving behind five children and prolonged years of heartache. Ms Kaiser, who has moved to Newcastle to be with her fiance, said the hurt was growing as she started to plan her wedding. “I’m getting married in a year and that’s what mothers and daughters talk about and she is not going to be here ... it’s so disheartening,” she said during Missing Persons Week. “Recently I’ve had to confirm the number of people who are coming to the venue. I still want her to walk me down the aisle when she comes back. “There’s an invitation for

her and a seat will be left for her at the wedding.“ Ms Kaiser, who was 20 when her mother disappeared, said Ms Whitehead had undergone the traumas of a divorce a few years prior to her disappearance but appeared to be getting on with life and was planning for the future. Ms Whitehead, a diabetic, has been unseen and her bank account untouched since her disappearance. “I hold out hope every day, somebody has to know something. She cannot have just vanished,” Ms Kaiser said. Up to 35,000 people are reported missing in Australia annually, with 95 per cent usually located within a week. About 1600 Australians have been missing for more than six months. Going missing is not an offence.

Double Take

To live forever. Man has dreamed about this since he has been able to recognize his own being and ultimately, comprehend his own demise. Mostly reserved for science iction and fantasy, immortality may be creeping it’s way into modern science. As it turns out, our brains are wired in much the same way a computer is, although it’s wiring is far more complex. But with a combination of ever more powerful computers and nano-technology, scientists predict we may be able to upload a copy of our brains to a computer as early as 2030.

Which scientists? Well Stephen Hawking for one. He has said that “it is theoretically possible to copy the brain onto a computer, and so provide a form of life ater death”. he theory, put simply, is that computers will be able to handle and store the massive amount of data gathered by nano particle bots that are injected into the body. hese bots record a complete map of the neural pathways in the brain, and thus ones consciousness is preserved. And on top of that, you would also be able to...

LONG-SERVING Geelong councillor Stretch Kontelj (pictured) might have left for a high-flying job in England with Specsavers but memories of him linger, or maybe that should be bubble. Stretch, a staunch Liberal, earned praise from both sides of the political fence for his service to Geelong. He also had a reputation as a hard worker, a fitness enthusiast and an educated family man who packed more into a single day than most would fit in a week. But, as few might know or remember, he could also knock back a lager, winning a beer-drinking contest at 1983’s inaugural Pako Festa. Now that’s an achievement we can all toast. Cheers, Stretch.
A HIGH-PROFILE Liberal attended a fundraiser in the Geelong region this week but wasn’t letting on how he travelled here. The function was only days after parliamentary speaker Bronwyn Bishop finally resigned for her $5200 helicopter flight to a Liberal fundraiser at Curlewis Golf Club. Prime Minister Tony Abbott attended this week’s event, at Clyde Park winery, near Bannockburn, before spending the following moring making various local funding announcements. The $150 a head Inaugural Corangamite Gala Dinner raised funds for Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson. It’ll be interesting to see how the PM puts that one down on his next parliamentary expenses form.
ADAM Goodes’ return to the AFL in Geelong this weekend might signify social change in football but it will also underline significant physical transformations as well. Previously, the greatest indigenous footballer to stride Kardinia Park was generally regarded to be Graham ‘Polly Farmer’, a Cats champion of the ‘60s. Standing 191cm and weighing 94kg, Farmer took on the role generally reserved for the tallest player on the paddock: ruckman. In contrast, Goodes is a utility, a role usually handed to players shorter than a ruckman. But Goodes is also 191cm - and 6kg heavier than Farmer was in his heyday. Modern players are certainly bigger. But are they better? Goodes can try answering that one tomorrow.
GEELONG Mayor Darryn Lyons (pictured) is a Leo, coincidentally symbolised as a lion, who shares his birth date this month with some significant others who made their marks before him. Iconic fashion designer Coco Chanel would have raised her perfected eyebrows if she had ever viewed his colourful dress sense, while former US President Bill Clinton and legendary aviator Orville Wright were also born on 19 August. The stars, or whoever interprets them, say 19 August babies become adults “always looking to reach the next level”. Suddenly those rumours about Cr Lyons running for federal parliament sound a little more credible, in the stars at least.
STILL on football, a newly groomed Geelong coach Chris Scott was greeted with a compliment - sort of - instead of a question first up at his weekly media conference. “Nice haircut,” quipped Indy photographer Reg Ryan as he snapped this shot of Scott’s new do. “Thanks,” replied Scott evenly. “That means something - coming from a photographer.”
BRILLIANT piece of information from parliamentary secretary for health Mary-Anne Thomas, saying “new data” showed almost half of Victoria was below the state-wide average for having free breast cancer checks. Small wonder, really - an average is arrived at when the total of a set of items is divided by the number of items. For breast cancer checks, the state-wide average participation rate was 54 per cent, with 47 electorates above the state-wide average and 33 electorates below it. The good news was the Geelong women appear to be great at getting checked, with Bellarine at 63 per cent and Geelong at 60 per cent.

Households flush away funds on blockages
Wipe out for plumbing By PAUL MILLAR LOCAL toilet habits are causing a stink at Barwon Water, with the authority blaming the flushing of sanitary wipes for hundreds of blockages annually. Households must stop using their toilets as garbage disposal units to avoid making costly mistakes, said infrastructure general manager Paul Northey. Wipes wrappers might say “flushable” but they still should not be flushed, he said. Wipes were either “solely responsible” for blockages or were accumulating around tree roots within pipes where they attracted oil and grease, causing obstructions. Barwon Water was spending hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to unblock drains, Mr Northey said. “While many of the products are labeled flushable, they do not break down like toilet paper and can clog sewerage networks. “We also appeal to residents to avoid pouring fats and oils down drains as these can build up in pipes and contribute to blockages and spills.” Mr Northey said Barwon Water’s staff was working with a Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) industry group to develop appropriate “flushability” standards for Australian and international manufacturers. “For now, we urge customers not to use the toilet as a garbage bin. A major blockage within domestic plumbing could end up being a very costly exercise.” About 120 tonnes of wipes are removed from Queensland sewage systems annually and Sydney authorities spend $8 million a year fixing blockages, 75 per cent from wet wipes, according to Ace Body Corporate Management. Body corporates and property owners were flushing away tens of thousands of dollars a year on “wet wipe time bombs”, the company said. But the misuse of wipes is keeping local plumbers busy. Aberdeen Plumbing’s John Hynes said up to 50 per cent of his work involved removing wipes. “They do cause problems,” he said. “It starts as a build up and then turns into a big plug. A lot of blockages are caused by them.” Plumber Daniel Martin, who specialises in unblocking drains, said the wipes were a problem. “They can catch on roots, as they definitely do not break down, and that causes a build up and that contributes to the blockage.”
In brief Death statement A MAN wanted for questioning over the death of a 60-year-old Newtown resident has handed himself in to police. A police spokesperson said investigators had taken a statement and were treating the man’s 26 July death as non-suspicious.
Advancing Geelong NEWCOMB will host Geelong’s new P-Tech school and a $14 million funding injection will deliver an Industry Growth Centre in Advanced Manufacturing to Waurn Ponds, Prime Minister Tony Abbott has announced. Mr Abbott said the industry centre and the PTech school, with a focus on maths and science, would both help Geelong’s push to become a centre for advanced manufacturing.
Smash injuries A MAN in his 20s has suffered head and neck injuries in a collision between a truck and car near Winchelsea. An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the victim was in a stable condition after the smash on the Princes Hwy about 5.30am Wednesday.
Trucks growing “HEAVIER” trucks could begin using the Princes Fwy to freight products from Geelong to Port of Melbourne, State Government has revealed. The Government said the freeway could be upgraded to accommodate “high productivity freight vehicles” that would deliver transport cost savings to Victorian exporters.
Parking shakeup PARKING in central Geelong faces a shakeup under a new council strategy. Mayor Darryn Lyons said City Hall was surveying motorists about their parking requirements, especially for “longer stays”, with the results to inform a new action plan for central Geelong.

Spa project ‘interests Indians’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A GROUP of Indian investors with up to $300 million to spend has shown interest in Geelong’s mineral springs spa project, according to a business lobby group. Chair of the India Australia Strategic Alliance (IASA) Dr Jagvinda Virk said the proposed spa project elicited great interest from the investor group during its latest visit to the city last Friday. State Government and council have
each committed $125,000 for a feasibility study into developing a world-class spa and wellness centre east of Eastern Beach’s swimming enclosure. Mayor Darryn Lyons said last year the spa and wellness industry was growing rapidly worldwide and could be worth up to $20 million annually to Geelong’s economy. Friday’s IASA delegation, the second to visit Geelong, heard about investment and real estate opportunities
and toured the region. The delegation visited City Hall and heard from Cr Lyons and representatives of City Hall’s Enterprise Geelong, Central Geelong and Major Projects. Local real estate agents addressed the group on business and property opportunities, while Regional Development Victoria briefed the 22 members of the delegation on significant investor opportunities.
Cr Lyons said the group explored key locations during a two-hour bus tour. “The delegation visited Avalon Airport, the Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct (GREP) and the Geelong Waterfront to get a feel for our region’s transport capabilities and investment opportunities. “I have developed very close relationships with several members of the delegation and feel positive about future business prospects with the group.”
Cr Lyons said IASA had tentatively proposed another visit in September with double the number of delegates. The Independent reported last month that the alliance could draw Indian business investment worth between $200 and $300 million. Dr Virk said IASA planned monthly delegations from different parts of India to spend two days in Sydney and one each in Geelong, Melbourne and Tasmania.

A “FLAWED” report says the risks presented by fracking in the Otways is low, according to the Greens. Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber said the State Government was using the gas industry consultant’s report to justify lifting a moratorium on fracking. “The authors of this summary report, Jacobs Group, make their living providing services to the gas industry... why would we accept a bunch of bland assertions from them that the risk is low and the industry is safe? “The State Government ought to be embarrassed to stand behind a report like that. It seems they are just putting out a fig leaf before lifting the moratorium and giving the go ahead to gas drilling across Victoria.“ The report said the Otways had “a range of natural gas resources that could potentially be developed “, The Government said the moratorium would remain in place during an inquiry into onshore gas issues. Lakes Oil holds a permit to drill for gas in an area stretching from Highton to the Surf Coast. Geelong and Surf Coast councils oppose onshore gas extraction.

HOMELESSNESS will become real for 25 year eight students at Geelong Baptist College tonight. They will rough it as part of a Vinnies School and Community Sleepout on what promises to be a cold winter night. School head of humanities Andrew Liberts said the event was important to students, with about half the year level participating. “We’re in for a cold night night but that’s reality,” Mr Liberts said. “It’s a fun night as much as they get cold and bear the elements. But it helps them develop a social conscience. “It’s important for them to recognise they can help out and make a difference despite their youth. “We educate them on the night by spending time talking about the causes of homelessness and addressing any misconceptions they have. “It comes as a surprise to them to learn that kids their own age are in that boat as part of families who are homeless. “They become more aware and grateful for what they have.” The sleepout raises awareness and funds for St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria’s homeless services. New faces contest by-election By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A MOTHER, a law student and a failed federal candidate have put up their hands for a vacancy on Geelong's council after the resignation of Cr Stretch Kontelj. The postal by-election for Kildare ward, taking in Newtown and Chilwell, part of South Geelong, Manifold Heights, Herne Hill, Fyansford and part of Stonehaven, will be on 17 October. Nominations close at midday on 15 September, with ballot packs mailed out between 29 September and 1 October for return by 6pm on 16 October. Newtown mother of two Ellen Csar, 35, said she would nominate to represent families and “what is needed in and around my electorate”. Ms Csar, a Labor member, said she would be a “back to basics” councillor, with husband Fabio as campaign manager. "Ridiculous” funding for city lighting and a floating Christmas tree should have gone toward council services and infrastructure improvements. One of her main concerns was a roundabout at the intersection of Autumn St and Minerva Rd, Manifold Heights. “Sometimes I feel lucky to be
INSPIRED: Trent Sullivan. alive after I’ve crossed that. There are no lights and no lollipop person and it needs one of the two.” Ms Csar suggested installing a bike share station at Western Beach to attract tourists and adding more cycling paths around Geelong. She proposed a shuttle bus connecting both ends of Pakington St, installing street art to promote business precincts, upgrading public toilets and “sprucing up” playgrounds. Newtown’s Trent Sullivan, 23, a Deakin University law students who works part-time in real estate, said he was inspired by Cr Kontelj’s “long history of community service and new Mayor Darryn Lyon’s energetic leadership”. Mr Sullivan wanted to present
himself as a candidate as part of “a new generation of community leaders”. “I believe it’s time for change. This council needs new blood and a voice for the future. "I believe I can provide fresh insight and perspective to the workings of council." Mr Sullivan wanted central Geelong rejuvenated with "changes to car parking and improvement to bus routes”. He said a convention and exhibition centre was needed to enhance Geelong’s reputation as “an events and festival capital of Australia”. “Geelong has incredible potential and some exciting changes have already begun to happen under this mayor’s leadership.“ The Independent understands that former Barrabool shire councillor Adrian Schoenfelder will also nominate. Mr Schonfelder was a former Geelong Young Liberal but campaigned for Labor in the 2010 federal election for the seat of Flinders, on the Mornington Peninsula. The Independent reported in 2010 that he resigned as a candidate days after accusing then-opposition leader Tony Abbott of “influencing people to take their own lives” with his opinions on sex and abortion.

THE INAUGURAL winner of a music competition with a difference is urging his fellow Geelong region musos to have a go. Composer Simon Watt said winning the first Melbourne Music Bank two years ago provided a timely boost to his career. Watt now has a business working in film scoring, corporate video, TV, games and advertising services. “It’s a great competition and certainly helped me along to the point where I’ve been able to run my own business since,” he said. “It always looks good on the resume and the opportunity to work on projects is wonderful.” The challenge for regional artists is familiar to Melbourne Music Bank ambassador and judge Ella Hooper, of Killing Heidi fame. Melbourne-born but raised in Violet Town, Hooper said Kill-
ing Heidi’s break came through radio’s JJJ Unearthed. “It’s so hard to make money as a new artist and I know the value of getting ahead start,” she said. “When I see the corporates helping out I’m all for it. Collaboration will be the way of the future. “For anyone ready to go with a song and take a leap in their career, this gives them such a supercharged entry into the industry.” Hooper offered some advice for prospective local entrants: “If you have a range of songs to choose from, pick one with immediate impact. “Enter the piece that is unique, that really sounds like you, the signature song, the one where no one else can sound like that.” Hooper said the range of entries was broad, from folk or rock to pop and instrumental. “We have people from all parts of the industry represented,
including radio, management, venue owners and promoters. “This is a seriously good prize offering the opportunity to work with high calibre people.” The prize includes two days of recording at Melbourne’s famous Sing Sing studios, a film clip by Oh Yeah Wow, album artwork, printed CDs and the chance for the winning song to feature in a TV ad. This year the prize also includes the expertise of a dedicated A-team of the industry’s finest in management, publicity, public relations and gig bookings. The competition is open to Victorian musicians submitting original songs before 23 August. A public vote will choose four finalists to perform at Melbourne Arts Centre’s State Theatre in October. Entries have opened at bankofmelbourne.com.au/melbmusicbank.

Wheely big cost revs up US sites
MP faces heat over penalties
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A US $30,000 price tag on Geelong-made carbon fibre wheels for Ford’s new Shelby Mustang is fueling American rev-head websites. A Mustang6G forum member posted an invoice revealing the cost after ordering the optional carbon fibre wheels for the Shelby GT350R. The Independent reported last month that Waurn Ponds-based Carbon Revolution was making the wheels for its first mass-production contract. Websites said a stock Shelby GT350R Mustang was expected be priced from US $61,370, so upgrading to carbon fibre wheels would increase the price aound 50 per cent more. The websites speculated that few buyers would pay so much. A Ford spokesman denied the $30,000 price tag on one of the websites. “If the car is $60-some-thousand, how could the wheels possibly be 30K?” the spokesman asked. But he did not reveal the actual cost of the wheels. Because the wheels are customised for the Shelby, Ford says they would not work properly on another car without further changes. “So rest assured, replacement wheels won’t cost you $30K, though we’d assume insurance would probably cover damage or theft anyway,” autoweek. com said. “On the bright side, Carbon Revolution has one set of wheels on the market and more are surely on their way. The trick, apparently, is getting our cars ready.”

Dental care win A STATE funding injection will boost Barwon Health dental services, Member for Geelong Christine Couzens has announced. The money would deliver 12 new dental chairs and technology upgrades for “higher-quality care, improved safety and better outcomes for patients”, Ms Couzens said. “The dentists and dental technicians at Barwon Health do such fantastic work. This new equipment will mean Barwon Health can continue to deliver vital public dental services to the local community.” Ms Couzens said the upgraded digital radiography equipment would allow dentists to quickly share images with other clinicians and doctors.

STATE Government and unions have lined up against federal Liberal MP Sarah Henderson over penalty rates. State Industrial Relations Minister Natalie Hutchins said a new Productivity Commission report foreshadowed an Abbott Government attack on penalty rates. The Independent reported last week that unions had launched a Geelong campaign over the issue, which Ms Henderson had rejected as dishonest. Ms Hutchins said the Commission’s proposal to cut Sunday penalty rates would hit the thousands of Victorian retail and hospitality workers. “The Abbott Government is hiding its plan to cut wages and conditions behind an inquiry. If they aren’t considering cuts then why did Joe Hockey request that the Productivity Commission examine them?” she said. “Cutting wages and conditions creates an underclass of workers and doesn’t improve productivity. “Instead of attacking working people and resurrecting the worst elements of Work Choices, the Abbott Government should come up with fair ways to grow our economy. “We know how important penalty rates are to Victorian
workers and their families. We’ll fight tooth and nail to protect them.” But Ms Henderson, the Member for Corangamite, insisted the Government had no plans to alter or remove penalty rates, which only the Fair Work Commission could change. “Any suggestion that the government has altered penalty rates, or has plans to remove them, is simply false. “In this draft report, the Productivity Commission has affirmed the Government’s position that it is the job of the Fair Work Commission to make changes to penalty rates, not the government. It’s important to reiterate there has been no recommendation to make any changes to overtime, night work or shift allowances. “For our nurses, firefighters, paramedics, police and other shift workers, penalty rates are vital. “Over the last few days, we have seen union bosses and Labor make a range of dishonest claims such as our government intends to cut the penalty rates of nurses. Local nurses and midwives were deliberately misled by this dishonest campaign. “Union bosses and Labor must cease their campaign of fear and uncertainty, which is hurting our region.”

It’s perfect weather for our award winning pasties...
After the War in 1947 the couple moved to Williamstown, where Vic worked as a baker before deciding to buy the shop where he had been working and operating Victor Routley it together. Working “days” began at midnight, when they stoked up their big brick lined “scotch” oven, fired with wood or briquettes. They would put the pies in first, when the oven was hottest, followed by cakes and then the delicate sponges. In 1971, Vic and Verna Verna Routley handed on the baton to their son Lawrie and his wife Anne, who have expanded the business with the help of their five children (Simon, Penny, Michael, Kate and Sam) to what it is today. There are now also 10 great grand children, and the eldest Lawrie Routley – current CEO Michael, is now working for the business.

State foils Aloca ‘stunt’ LABOR has used its lower house numbers to maintain a “veil of secrecy“ on Alcoa’s proposed Anglesea coal mine and power station rehabilitation, according to the Greens. The Greens, Liberals and Sex Party joined forces in the upper house on Wednesday to vote in favour of removing a Freedom of Information exemption covering the rehabilitation process. But Andrews Government MPs voted against the bill when it reached the lower house, later accusing the Greens of a “stunt. Alcoa plans to spend at least $55 million rehabilitating the site but environmentalists and residents are concerned about the mine area, fear-
Anglesea fix-up ‘secrecy’ ing it could be left as a coal seam fire risk. Alcoa will close the mine and power station at the end of the month after failing to sell the facility, which became redundant when the company closed its Pt Henry aluminium processing operations. The Anglesea closure will cost over 80 jobs. The Greens said the defeated bill would have “removed Alcoa’s veil of secrecy, opening the company up to public scrutiny over rehabilitation of the Anglesea mine and power station site.
fulfilled our election commitment to reopen the Hazelwood mine fire inquiry, which includes matters relating to the Anglesea coal mine and generator. Unlike the Greens, we have every confidence that the inquiry board, led by the Hon Bernard Teague, will thoroughly scrutinise all documents and provide a detailed assessment of Alcoa’s fire management and rehabilitation plans at Anglesea. “My department have started consultation with the community about the site and Point Henry. Alcoa denied details of the rehabilitation were “secret. A spokesperson for the company said information about the work was available on the company’s website.
Victorian Greens energy spokesperson Ellen Sandell said the lower house vote showed the Government cared “more about big coal companies than individuals or the environment. “This was an opportunity to make Alcoa accountable for the rehabilitation of this massive hole in the ground, which we recently learned also contains a tip full of asbestos removed from the power plant.“ Environment Minister and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville accused the Greens of “yet another stunt“. “Within our first 100 days we

Restoration brings new life to Pako Vineyard church By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN IT’S CHURCH, but not as we know it. The former St Phillip’s bluestone church in Pakington St, Geelong West, was recently restored to its past glory. But the traditional façade now contains a rather nontraditional community called Geelong Vineyard Church. Gone are the usual pews and instead the wide expanses of the beautiful old building are now put to various community uses, such as a fortnightly Pako Makers Market. The market showcases a wide range of locally produced items, with the next tomorrow at 9am. But that’s not to say church activities have gone by the wayside - far from it, insisted Pastor Peter Downes. They just happen on a much more informal basis, Pastor Downes said. Couches and tables and chairs had replaced the pews, which could take visitors a little aback, he confessed. And church services stop halfway through for a coffee, “which is an important part of our creedâ€?, Pastor Downes said with a smile. “We’re serious about being a Christian church but we want to break down the barriers for people to come along. “We wanted the place to work in a way that serves the community. We just want to be neighbours.â€?

FEDERAL funding will help wean two Geelong companies off Australia’s disappearing automotive manufacturing industry. Auto component suppliers MHG Glass and Backwell IXL will receive $1 million and $450,000 respectively “to diversity and create new jobs”, according to Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson. Both companies supplied car manufacturers now closing shop in Australia, including Geelong’s Ford plant. MHG will use the federal money to find work in architectural glass processing, while Backwell is working on a mounting system for rooftop solar systems. Ms Henderson called the funding “fantastic news for the region”.

AVERAGE to above-average rain was recorded across most of the region in July. Bureau of Meteorology figures for Geelong were compromised by a gauge malfunction at its Breakwater weather station on three days. However, Geelong Weather Services patched those figures to determine a total of 40.4mm for the month. The urban area average was 44mm compared to the latest 30year average of 43.5mm. Despite warnings of a dry spring, the Indian Ocean dipole shows warmer waters at the moment, which often trumps the drought effects of the El Nino on Geelong.

July's rain result left the region's water storages just under 59 per cent of capacity at the end of the month, slightly up on the end of June but around 22 per cent lower than the same time last year. As for monthly temperatures, Geelong was .4C colder than its 30-year average for July. The lowest overnight minimum was minus 1.4 C and three
frosts were recorded for the month. The warmest day was 17.2 C on 24 July. The 14th and 26th were the equal coldest days of the month, with maximums of only 10.1C on each day. Only one strong-wind day was recorded for the month, with 65km/h at Breakwater on 26 July. The month also had two thunder days but no severe storms. A thick fog descended on 8 July, with snow falling at Otways Ridge the same day. Lindsay Smail operates Geelong Weather Services, phone 5241 5332.

Letters Problem with iParents A LETTER I wrote that was published in the 13 February Independent outlined the dangers of excessive use of iPads, particularly among young children. Both Christie Whitney and Wendy Valentine (Letters, 20 February) criticised my comments, denouncing my claims. I wonder whether they watched the 60 minutes story on Sunday night that outlined concerns about iPad use that were similar to mine. I now realise that iPads are not the problem. The real problem is parents who choose to expose young children to technology that can hinder the normal development of their brains. I look forward to any response. Mary Bicanic Bell Post Hill
Online but out of work I THANK Billy Deikos (Letters, 24 July) for saying what job seekers have been saying but about which no one cares. Online applications don’t work.
I am 26, graduated from high school in 2008 and am still unemployed. I’ve done countless courses, placements and volunteer work but can’t get past the red tape of the cold online application process. Trying to physically hand in a resume, especially at my age, is pointless. They almost snap, “Go online”. I spend hours on online applications but almost never receive a reply and very rarely an interview. All businesses should accept physical resumes. We job seekers are discriminated against, put down, ridiculed, perceived as lazy and made to feel worthless because we are unemployed. Those lucky enough to be employed should get off their high horses and stop unfairly judging us. They should try living a month in our shoes, struggling to find work with hardly any money and people unfairly misjudging them as lazy worthless scum. It isn’t fun. We are people with real feelings and just want what everyone wants: a job, stable income and to be free of the stigma of being unemployed. Suzanne Bridson Herne Hill
Finish it, they will come IF WE started the upgrade of Simonds Stadium then we have to finish it (Independent, 31 July). We should finish off the ground for the supporters of Geelong Football Club so down the track we can have more games here. We only have one more game left in Geelong this season after Saturday’s night match and, as a supporter, I feel that we are not getting the number of games that we should. It’s also time we looked for a team to share our ground, which would mean more football, more people coming to Geelong and more money for Geelong. B Porter Corio
Not Goodes enough ADAM Goodes is an entertainer who gets paid big bickies to do just that. He should think himself lucky that his spearthrowing antics against fans at the football didn’t
Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au PO Box 407, Geelong, 3220 Fax: 5249 6799
result in a fine. Western Bulldogs player Nathan Brown was fined $5000 and Port Adelaide’ Chad Cornes $3000 for making insulting signs to fans with just a finger. It wasn’t long ago that Gary Ayres was extremely lucky to get away with giving the finger to the Geelong faithful after they questioned his heritage. In 2006 when Sydney played St Kilda on the SCG someone let loose a pig at half time with the number four on one side and ‘Pluga’ on the other. Lockett wasn’t happy but he certainly didn’t attack the public - he went on to play for the Swans. Goodes needs to toughen up. Threatening a crowd with a spear-throwing action is just as bad as pointing an imaginary gun at a crowd. Goodes is lucky. It wasn’t that long ago people threw rotten eggs and fruit if they didn’t like entertainers. It might be bad for Goodes if he is thinskinned but it is entertaining and has been going on since Roman days. Bob Thompson Ocean Grove
Evolution monkey business ADAM Goodes has a great name. The Bible teaches us that God created the first man, Adam, and that we are all part of one human family. We have not evolved from monkeys or apes, as is taught through evolution education. This religion permeates society insidiously through preschool to university and the media et cetera. It is very sad but of no surprise to observe the deterioration in behaviour and the increase in suicide that follows this all-pervasive teaching, which denies our Lord and saviour, Jesus Christ, his rightful place as our creator. Pauline Whitrow Belmont
Liberally criticised AS A recent arrival to the area I have been reading the Geelong Independent, which has left me wondering what dictionary it used to come up with its interpretation of ‘independent’. To any casual reader, the paper is nothing but a Liberal party newsletter. D D’Agostino Grovedale
Our refugee disgrace CONGRATULATIONS to SBS for the enlightening series Go Back to Where You Came From and its reminder that in 2012 the then-Labor government's refugee intake was set at 20,000. Disgracefully, the incoming Coalition Government cut the intake to 13,750 with annual increases reaching 25,000 by 2018/2019. Why then did the recent ALP national conference agree only to a commitment of 27,000 by 2025? This was yet another example of Labor falling in line behind the coalition's abysmal and shameful refugee policies. Jennifer Wills Portarlington

Junior Players’ birthday bash THE CREAM of Geelong performers will be together on stage this month to pay homage to the theatre company that gave them their start. International opera sensation Peter Coleman-Wright, Martin Croft, Kate Bader, Gail and Cindy Lee, Shane Lee, Shandelle Cooke, Angie Hilton, Sam Cocking, Tim and Noni McCallum, Jackson Thomas, Lisa and Kate Hanley, Andre Jewson, Sophia Katos and Jack O’Riley have become familiar names. Along with Guy Pearce, they will all be part of a weekend of celebrations as Geelong Society of Dramatic Arts (GSODA) juniors turns 50. The GSODA Junior Players 50th Anniversary includes a gala ball on the Saturday night and

The celebrations will culminate with one-off Gala Spectacular on 17 August in the Playhouse Theatre at Geelong Performing Arts Centre, headlined by Coleman-Wright. GSODA said the one-off performance would showcase the talents of former members of the
company who had gone on to forge professional careers in the industry. The show’s musical director will be John Shawcross, while Debbie Fraser will direct with the assistance of Jennie Tonzing. GSODA believed its Junior Player was the oldest children’s theatre company of its type in Australia. The brainchild of Dorothy Squire and Noeline Jennings, the juniors’ first production was Red Riding Hood, staged in a former GAMA Theatre in 1965 with a cast of 39 performers aged between eight and 16. The production proved so successful the company went from strength to strength, growing to 85 members by 1967, GSODA said.

The festival launched in 2013 as a platform for filmmakers to talk about health issues and how they affected communities. Bellarine Community Health, SpringDale Neighbourhood Centre and Queenscliff Uniting Church signed on to host screenings on the peninsula. Bellarine Community Health
chief John Fendyk said his organisation was thrilled to be a festival partner. “The films support Bellarine Community Health to engage the community in thinking about their health outside of our clinical settings,” he said. Barwon Health hosted the first festival screening at the start of the month. The two remaining screenings will be at SpringDale Neighbourhood Centre next Friday and Uniting Church Queenscliff on 23 September.

World. The couple released the album, featuring hit single To The Moon And Back, to a full house at the Tamworth Music Festival. Jetty Road has a changed lineup and a new album full of musical diversity. The album, Hearts On Fire, has been described as an evolution for the band and its distinctive sound.
After travelling half way across the globe to Canada to record with producer Paul Shatto, of Far Away Places fame, the new album reflects the band’s journey over the past few years. Roo Arcus released his third studio album, Cowboys and Sunsets, in a whirlwind of sold out launches, ARIA chart success, award honours and sold out gigs.

Gateway hosts Corio country LOCALS will get a chance to feast on A Taste of Tamworth on Saturday when a triple-treat of award-winners taking to the stage at Corio's Gateway Hotel. The show will be a splash of the old and new as Golden Guitar winning act Carter and Carter performs songs from its latest album with old favourites thrown in to get the audience involved. Jetty Road, one of Australia’s most successful country music trios with 10 number-ones, and Roo Arcus, a farm boy whose songs resonate with authenticity, will also appear in the Geelong show. Dave Carter said each act did its own thing in the show but they all came together at the end, pooling resources and talent. “It’s always good to return to Geelong as the crowd is always receptive,” he said. “A lot of the night involves songs from our new albums and then we perform songs that everybody will know and can sing along with.” Carter and wife Merelyn, described as Australian independent country music artists of the decade, will perform songs from their latest album, Wonderful

Market set for facelift chromatic blend of grey. Utilising two tones to add depth and enhance the heritage-listed geometric shapes of the buildings that form Market Square Shopping Centre, Market Square will be painted in Dulux dune with a woodland grey trim. “We are very fortunate at Market Square in that we have retained our heritage, with the historic Corio Stores and heritage listed Colonial Mutual Life (CML) buildings”, Ms Kelly-Burton said. “Preparation for the painting works has begun with the project expected to take two to three months
depending on weather conditions,” facilities manager Daniel Grech said. Beautification works will also commence on the external of the car park once painting works are complete with the addition of planter boxes. As part of the new look, many customers will be thrilled to find out Market Square is upgrading the lifts to improve service and response times. The lift works commenced on 21 July and will be completed before the busy Christmas season. During the upgrade, customers who have accessibility needs are en-
couraged to park on Level 1 of Market Square’s car park. “We have provided additional disabled and parent with pram parking spaces on Level 1 of our car park for our customer convenience,” Ms Kelly-Burton said. “The lifts will look the same, but will work much more efficiently. “We would like to extend our thanks to our customers and visitors for their patience during our upgrades and look forward to celebrating our 30th birthday with them during November and December this year,” Ms Kelly-Burton said.

The new look Market Square will reflect the latest architectural inspirations of modern Australian’s landscapes, reflecting a contrasting mono-

No grey areas THE Grey Outdoors Leisure Tours, operated by Sandy and Rob Higgins, conducts small group day and overnight trips for seniors from Geelong and surrounding areas. However, to be eligible for The Grey Outdoors trips, travellers must have one or more visible wrinkles. Everyone is checked before they get on the bus! Rob said that passengers find that small groups of 12 are much friendlier. “They get to know everyone
on the trip because they do not get lost in the crowd - there is not a crowd to get lost in. “Everything is easier with a small group because there are no queues. “It is quicker and easier to get on and off the bus. Meals are served quickly. “There is also more time to enjoy the places we visit because you do not have to wait for the crowd.” Rob adds that small group sizes means the tour can visit places that larger groups cannot.
“Scenic back roads area accessible, small parking areas are a breeze and special places that cannot cater for 50 people can cater for our smaller group.” Rob said that many people find that the hardest part is taking that first step and booking a trip. All passengers receive a $20 discount on their first trip. For further information contact The Grey Outdoors on 5253 1251 or Rob and Sandy Higgins on 0438 798 075.

SCOOTERS Australia in Charles Street, Newcomb, is where oldfashioned service is standard for all customers. Licensed dealers Mark and Susan Dillon train their local team with the motto: “It’s not about providing the best scooter to the customer, it’s about providing the scooter that meets the customer’s needs the best”. The trained staff takes the time to listen to the customer’s requests, evaluate the best solutions and provide a range of options that best suit the requirements of the end user - all done with a smile and a distinct lack of “sales pressure”. “We stock Geelong’s largest range of scooters, to provide products to meet everyone’s needs, and budget,” Mark said. “At any time we can have up to 20-25 scooters in stock with a

Not far to spa
Take the healing waters of Hepburn Springs.
THE HISTORIC Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa has been welcoming visitors since 1895 to bathe in the region’s mineral rich waters. An icon of the region, the Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa is nestled within the Hepburn Mineral Springs Reserve near picturesque Hepburn Springs and Daylesford and draws mineral waters directly from the source to offer a unique spa and bathhouse wellness experience. Traditional communal bathing in warmed mineral water pools is available in the Bathhouse and the Sanctuary, with a range of hydrotherapies including spa and relax-
ation pools, spa couches, aroma steam room and salt therapy pool offered as various ways of “taking the healing waters” of Hepburn Springs. Bathing in the precious Hepburn Spring waters has long been recognised as a valuable addition to one’s health regime, particularly the Private Bathing experience offered at Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa. The addition of specialised naturopathic blends of salts, herbs and flowers to the mineral water, such as Detox, Relaxo Rancho, Goddess, Pregnancy Pause and Cold be Gone provide different health benefits to
meet personal needs and enhance the mineral bathing experience. The Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa also offers a magnificent day spa dedicated to wellbeing where visitors can experience relaxing and reviving treatments, signature massages, body wraps, body exfoliation, massage therapies, facial therapies, hand and foot therapies and spa rituals. It is located in the heart of Australia’s spa country near Daylesford, just 90 minutes from Geelong. Phone 5321 6000 for more information.
Prevention key for podiatry clinic fit shoes properly to make sure people are wearing the right shoes. “So often we see people wearing the wrong size footwear.” Dr Leembruggen says that if clients return with a similar problem the underlying cause has not been resolved. “We fully address the problem and make sure clients are not continually coming back with painful conditions.” Manifold Podiatry also offers a revolutionary, safe and effective treatment for fungal nails. “The sooner we can treat fungal nails, the better the success rate. If people wait until the fungal infection worsens, it is a lot harder to treat,” Dr Leembruggen says. Manifold Podiatry is at 2/84 Shannon Ave, Geelong West, phone 5298 2746.

PREVENTION rather than cure is much more than just a slogan at Manifold Podiatry. Dr Simone Leembruggen says the clinic seeks out the cause of any footrelated problems rather than just treating the symptom. “When people come in we look at the whole person and look at the cause of an issue, looking at why the problem has arisen,” Dr Leembruggen explains. “Then we look at how to prevent it, to enable people to keep doing the things they love doing for as long as they can. “We want to inspire people to value their feet. Feet are important – what would we do without them?” Dr Leembruggen says education and empowering people to look after feet and prevent problems is the key. “We talk to clients about understanding what a good shoe is, how to

Changing Women’s Lives New help to beat incontinence URINARY incontinence, or the loss of bladder control, can range from occasionally leaking when coughing, laughing or sneezing to a sudden overwhelming urge to urinate. Now help is available in Geelong with the MonaLisa Touch Laser, a non-surgical, non-hormonal treatment that improves the health of vaginal walls. Using a CO2 fractional laser, the procedure stimulates the body’s own system to improve circulation and nutrient supply to vaginal skin. “Many of our members have had the procedure and noticed improvements after their first treatment,” said CrossFit Geelong owner Corrine Chalmers. “They now feel far more comfortable exercising. I’m very excited about what this procedure will do for women in Geelong.” MonaLisa Touch Australian pioneer and endogynaecologist Dr Behnia-Willison said the quick walk-in, walk-out procedure is painless for most patients. “The MonaLisa Touch is suitable for women of all ages experiencing symptoms related to vaginal atrophy, including vaginal dryness or itching, urinary urgency and incontinence, burning sensations and irritations of the vagina, fissuring of the vagina opening, vaginal laxity and pain during intercourse.” The treatment is often used in conjunction with platelet-rich plama (PRP), which is prepared from the patient’s own blood and injected into the vaginal

Sore Feet or Legs? Call Healing pain, injury and arthritis
Take the pain out of podiatry. from athletes wanting to return to professional sport, to seniors who’ve suffered for years with pain and mobility issues, and others who’ve been previously told
that surgery and medications are their only options,” said Dr David Kavanagh, who heads the Geelong clinic. “We take a holistic approach to healing, looking past the symptoms and exploring underlying issues to treat the cause of people’s concerns. “One size does not fit all when it comes to healing; appropriate diagnostic evidence and targeted individualised treatment plans are key to achieving optimal, longterm results.” Anyone suffering heel or knee pain, injury or arthritis, ankle, achilles or shin pain, bunions, sports or soft tissue injuries should phone Foot and Leg Pain Clinics.

RENOWNED engine tuner Paul Farrell has brought decades of experience paired with the latest equipment in a state-of-the-art workshop to Geelong. The head of Geelong Performance Centre says he’s already building up his business in the city through reputation and thorough workmanship. Log-book servicing, licensed Arctick air-conditioning servicing and general mechanical repairs are also services provided by Geelong Performance Centre. An expert in tuning performance cars, Paul opened his Tarkin Court workshop in Bell Park just weeks ago but already has a list of satisfied customers. “We can offer expert advice for building performance tuning packages and upgrades to suit every car and its owner,” Paul said. Geelong Performance Centre is the only one of its kind as a re-seller for the highly regarded Walkinshaw brand in Geelong and surrounding areas. The centre also offers dyno-tuning on a fullyequipped all-wheel drive dyno. The workshop delivers on late model diesel and Euro performance tuning as well as performance brake and clutch upgrades. They are also an agent for Steinbauer Diesel Power Modules. “Our reputation means everything to us,” Paul said. “We have the expertise, we have the equipment and we deliver through quality workmanship and attention to detail.” Quotes and bookings are available by visiting Geelong Performance Centre, at 4 Tarkin Court, or phoning 5277 2503.

LOW-IMPACT collisions typical in shopping centre car parks are annoying to say the least. Add to this the fact that people rarely own up to damaging other people’s cars. It has been noticed that drivers are often scared to back-up any further due to very limited vision. These are the occasions where reverse sensors are very welcome. Bumper Master fits reversing sensors to help customers overcome fears of backing into objects or even pedestrians. Reversing sensors help prevent damage to owners’ cars as well as the vehicles of neighbours and other motorists. They can also help when backing out of tight garages and past narrow gateposts. Bumper Master can also help owners improve the appearance of bumpers when selling vehicles. Bumpers are the first part of any car to incur damage – and first impressions are important when trying to sell. All Bumper Master repairs come with a no-questions-asked warranty to give customers peace of mind. Best of all, most bumper repairs are done for less than the cost of insurance excesses. Located behind VicRoads at 3 Dowsett St, South Geelong, Bumper Master has proven experience in providing an alternative repair service to the bumper regions of any car. Owners wanting to improve the resale value of their cars should phone Bumper Master on 5221 0138.

AS MUCH as a small 1.2-litre three-cylinder hatchback could be considered aggressive, the new Micra is more so, according to Nissan. The city runabout has ‘a new style that delivers a stronger, more assertive and dynamic look,’ its maker opines. With almost seven million sales under its belt in more than 30 years, the Nissan small car now checks in with a long list of upgrades, including revised spec levels, a new look and a slew of technical innovations. The Micra, known as Nissan March in some countries, is built in four centres around the world and sold globally. All cars coming to Australia are made in India. Nissan Micra ST manual hits the market at $13,490, plus onroad costs, an automatic version ups the price to $15,290, while the Ti comes in automatic only for $16,990. Nissan made the ST auto available for our week’s road test. The smallest Nissan in Australia has come in for some big changes with more than 50 per
unit producing 56 kilowatts of power and 104 Nm of torque Nissan rates fuel economy on the combined urban / highway cycle at 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres for the five-speed manual transmission grade and 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres for the fourspeed automatics. Cruise control is standard. Passive safety is covered by front to rear curtain airbags, front seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters, rear seatbelts, plus driver’s seatbelt warning and alarm. The usual active safety suspects - vehicle dynamic control, anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist - found in more expensive cars - are standard Micra features. Nissan Micra does not take ‘forever and a day’ to reach 100 kilometres an hour from a standing start, it only seems like it. On more than one occasion during our test the Micra made a meal of getting up to speed when filtering into motorway traffic from a slip road: practice makes perfect, it’s a matter of becoming used to the car.

cent new body panels. It now features the Nissan ‘VMotion’ front grille now delivering a stronger, more distinctive and dynamic look. This frontal shape was introduced in the SUV and 4WD Nissans, yet looks good on this passenger car. In addition, the latest Micra sports a new bonnet, front guards, restyled front and rear bumper, new headlights and rear lamps as well as new-design wheels. Micra Ti grade enjoys 15-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, foglights and auto headlights. Inside, the surroundings are of a higher standard than previously, with trim and surface finishes being given a quality look and feel. All variants feature a new centre cluster, updated dashboard instrumentation and seat trim. Power windows are now standard. By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
HANDS UP: Joel Selwood and Jimmy Bartel at training on Wednesday. 142625 spots in the run home. Scott said the players were determined to focus on the game by playing “as hard as we can” while still giving Sydney “the respect they deserve”. Scott also took time to laud his inspirational captain, hoping the playing group would play well to acknowledge
Joel Selwoods milestone. “It feels like it’s only the beginning,” Scott said. “Over the past couple of years we’ve been moving into a different phase not only of his career but for the club’s position within the competition.
Picture: REG RYAN “He can lead this club for a long time. It’s been a pretty good 200 games but we’re more excited about the next 100. “The thing I admire, and our supporters I suspect, is that when we’ve been under pressure Joel’s the one that stands up.”
Warriors face toughest test after Port Melbourne loss NORTH Geelong will face its toughest encounter of the year in an away match against Heidelberg this Sunday at Olympic Village. The host is coming off a comfortable 3-1 win over Broadmeadows in the FFA cup. With a balanced squad and several routes to goal, Heidelberg will be keen to stop its recent yo-yoing form to make a late charge for top spot. North Geelong will need to dust off from a cruel 3-2 loss last Friday night to Port Melbourne. In the opening 30 minutes Port dominated proceedings with several surging runs from Adrian Zahra and Ryan Opperman, giving the Warriors defence plenty of work. Port opened the scoring on 23 minutes when Opperman received a beautiful ball from Zahra to split the Warriors defence and drill his shot low out of Daniel Zilic’s reach North Geelong fought back, wrestling control in the remaining 15 minutes. Michael Anderson was back on the scorer’s sheet at the 45th minute when he swooped on a poor clearance to sneak the ball under Michael Stark in goals
WARRIOR: Reardo Luka in action for North Geelong. Picture: IVAN DUGANDZIC and level the scores at halftime. The Warriors took control in the second half with several attacks. In their way, though, was in-form Stark who thwarted several attempts including a goal-line clearance in the 57th minute. The Warriors persisted, with Juso Julardzija up-
ended by a clumsy challenge in the 73rd minute, earning a penalty that Matthew Townley dispatched to put the visitors up 2-1. The Warriors didn’t hold onto the lead long, though. In the 77th minute a Port corner kick swung into the six-yard box. North Geelong’s defenders and keeper made no attempt to clear the ball, with Chris Grossman nudging home the easiest of goals. North’s Yusuf Yusuf almost snatched a winner on 85 minutes with a well-taken volley but Stark again was on hand to push it away. With seconds remaining, North gave away an unnecessary free kick 30 metres out. Port pushed everyone forward to crowd the contest, the ball drifted in and was poorly cleared by Matthew Townley. North’s defence idly watched Port attack the loose ball, with an Erhan Yalaz poke bouncing it past Zilic to agonisingly hit the post and roll into goal. The Warriors remain third from bottom in the play-off relegation spot and will need at least one more win from the remaining three matches to secure their place.
WURDEE Boluc Reservoir has always been challenging but anglers who put in the time, like Michael Evans, reap the rewards. Michael managed to bank impressive redfin to 44cm while walking the bank and casing a Daiwa spike lure over the past week. Other anglers fishing mudeyes under floats caught brown and rainbow trout to 1.5kg as rising water levels brought fish closer to the main rock wall. Further down the western district, anglers boated impressive mixed bags of trout and bass at Lake Bullen Merri. Bank anglers got into the action with pink Powerbait on running sinker rigs, catching rainbow trout and Chinook salmon. Anglers slowly trolling Tassie Devils and Daiwa Double Clutches boated Chinook salmon to just over 3kg and rainbows reaching 2kg. The most productive patch of water for boat anglers GRUBBY: Trent Schiller with was the south bank an estuary perch, taken on a area just out from Z-Man grub. the main boat ramp and angling club. Bullen Merri bass are elusive but also some of the biggest in the country. Scott Grey trolled deep last week with minnow-style lures to boat a 42cm bass the shape of a football it was so large. Anglers targeting these fish need to hold on because, unlike the trout and salmon, they head straight for the volcanic bottom of the lake. The fishing was slower down the road at Lake Purrumbete where only the odd brown trout took a trolled lure at first light. A few Chinook salmon were boated but were smaller than their Bullen Merri counterparts, averaging 1kg. Up north, Toolondo produced trophy brown trout again. Charter operator Trevor Holmes reported catches of fish averaging 2kg either trolling and casting Tassie Devils. Trevor and some clients have been trying something different, casting surface lures such as OSP bent minnows among the timber with some surprising results. On the saltwater front, rough weather made the going tough again. Queenscliff Harbour held reasonable numbers of silver trevally to 40cm for anglers casting soft plastics. Squid were also taken inside the harbour but were smaller than others caught in the bight and surrounding waters. Down the coast, Trent Schiller continued banking bream and estuary perch while fishing land-based in the Hopkins River. Z-Man grubs were effective on both species. Next week’s forecast for improved weather promises another chance to chase bluefin tuna at Port Fairy. Small stick baits or skirted lures should do the trick in around 48m at Lady Julia Percy Island. Closer to home, squid should be available from Queenscliff to St Leonards. Freshwater anglers should keep Lake Bullen Merri in mind for trout, salmon and bass.

THE EYES of the football world will be on Geelong tomorrow night - and not just for Joel Selwood’s 200th game. Audiences around the country perhaps in Perth particularly - will be fascinated to see how the Geelong crowd responds to the dramas surrounding Sydney’s Adam Goodes. Most commentators have agreed that if any crowd can provide a circuitbreaker in the booing of the Swan’s champion it will be at Kardinia Park. Now it’s up to the crowd to demonstrate whether the commentators are correct. Players from both sides will try to set the scene when they enter Simonds Stadium as one on Saturday night to run through a joint banner. Cats coach Chris Scott said the club had put in a lot of work with the AFL, players association and the Swans to recognise the issue and do everything possible to encourage good crowd behaviour. “There can be no excuse for booing him in the future,” Scott declared this week. “We’re really confident and hopeful that our supporters will support our players really strongly but be respectful of the opposition as well. “There will be an element, as there is in society, that chooses not to listen to reason and choose not to behave for reason only they can explain. “If that happens it’ll be a bit depressing and I think our players will be disappointed in those people but we’ll also acknowledge there’s not a whole lot more we can do about it.” Scott dismissed suggestions that any booing could temporarily halt the game, saying contrived outcomes were pointless. “If you’re talking really radical things like the game being stopped then I tend to think they have the most impact if they’re organic and unplanned. “Am I optimistic that we’ve moved forward? Yeah, I am, but I’m an optimist.” Scott did pause to remind everyone that although the issue of racial vilification in the AFL was significant, the ultimate reason for the two sides being on the ground was to play an important game of football. In a rare night game this season, the two sides play for crucial finals
