One door opens.... DARRYN Lyons was all smiles as he launched new developments at City Hall’s industrial estate near Corio on Wednesday. But it was a week of ups and downs for Australia’s most flamboyant mayor, with his floating Christmas tree looking like running aground and State Government seizing planning control of central Geelong. Ex-Alcoa, Ford workers lose new jobs
Double heartbreak UP TO 30 former Alcoa workers from Geelong and at least one ex-Ford employee face redundancy for the second time in 12 months as a Williamstown shipyard sheds another 125 staff. The former Alcoa electricians joined BAE Systems after the Point Henry smelter closed just over a year ago. Electrical Trades Union organiser Troy Knight said the workers were struggling
with facing redundancy again. “It’s pretty hard for the guys to take, Mr Knight said. “A few of them are really struggling. “These poor guys all held long-term positions at Alcoa and thought they were going into another secure role at BAE Systems. “They all put a lot of effort into this because they had to be retrained and certified for the work at Williamstown.
“It was a challenging job but they were all happy to be at BAE. It’s very particular work and they were very good at what they did. “It was a really good fit for those guys. They had to get over the shock of Alcoa and now they’re faced with this. “We’ll be running counselling for them and we have a support group of ex-Ford and ex-Alcoa workers. “They’re all highly skilled and wellqualified but it hasn’t helped them

POLITICIANS, pioneers, soldiers and sailors – they’re just some of the roles that have earned Australians the honour of street names in Canberra. Now add to the list mouth-organ champion, of Geelong no less. Yes, the ACT Government recently unveiled Ketterer St, in suburban Moncrieff, in honour of our very own William Ketterer. And such an honour he richly deserved. After founding the wildly successful Geelong West City Harmonica Band in the 1920s, Ketterer went on to become Mouth Organ World Champion in 1931. Dextrous of gob, he also played the somewhat-larger tuba for Geelong City Municipal Band. His name eventually faded from local conversation but that’s our William Ketterer: famous for the harmonica but never one to blow his own trumpet. EVER wondered how to apply human rights to world heritage conservation? What about the parenting secrets of seabirds? And just what are the superpowers of medical maggots? Well, Deakin University’s Three Minute Thesis challenge tried answering all these obscure questions and more in just 180 seconds each yesterday. Deakin said a full-length oral presentation of the average thesis would take 14 hours, so the challenge really put the heat on participanting students to cut the waffle and get to the arcane point.
Given some of the topics involved, the attentionspan challenge for the audience would have been closer to three seconds than three minutes. WHEN the Google alert flashed up, it looked ominous. “Three crushed to death in Geelong mine, it screamed. Geelong mine? Where the hell is a mine around Geelong capable of crushing mineworkers to death? Was this another Beaconsfield? Turns out it was the Geelong mine in Matabeleland, Zimbabwe, where four illegal miners were crushed to death at midnight while searching for flecks of gold while trying to feed their families. The origin of the Geelong moniker for the mine is difficult to find but was part of the colonisation of then-Rhodesia by the British South Africa Company in the late 1800s. The old Geelong name gets quite an airing around the world – and we thought it was only sourced from the local Wathaurong Aboriginal name for the region, Jillong. Cost could ground Christmas tree 1158308-CB47-14
GEELONG’S floating Christmas tree could be grounded after council terminated a $540,000 contract for storage and installation. Creative Production Services (CPS) told council it wanted out of the contract because the price was too low. Council will investigate alternatives for the tree in this year’s Christmas celebrations after tearing up the four-year arrangement on Tuesday night . A report to council warned that alternative arrangements would likely result in higher costs for storage and installation. “Consideration is being given to (alternative) ways of delivering the ICON: The floating tree. tree, in particular land-based options,

the report said. “To establish indicative costing for a land-based option, further work is being undertaken to identify a suitable location. The report said investigations would have to consider engineering issues to secure the 25-metre-high, 10-ton tree, along with transport, security, electricity and public safety. “There is not expected to be any savings in the first year if the tree is placed on land, the report said. The tree debuted on Geelong’s waterfront last Christmas, with council estimating 180,000 onlookers inspected it over the festive season.

‘Outrage’ at bus, train change sparks forum By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG’S public transport stoush continues with two Liberal politicians announcing a forum following a “public outcry” on recent changes. Federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson and state South Barwon MP Andrew Katos said the forum was in response to a flood of negative feedback on timetable changes. Ms Henderson said the new Regional Rail Link was failing to live up to expectations in a number of areas. “The jointly funded federal/state Regional Rail Link project was intended to deliver better outcomes for all commuters, especially the people
of Geelong and Corangamite,” she said. “The result has been far from satisfactory, with overcrowded trains and unreliable timetables. “To make matters worse, the introduction of a new bus timetable has resulted in bus routes being changed, to the detriment of those who need the bus service the most. “Many local residents are extremely angered by Labor’s timetable changes.” Mr Katos said the Andrews Government had “botched“ Regional Rail Link and changes to bus timetables and routes.
“My office has been inundated with complaints around both the RRL and buses. “The changes to the bus routes and timetables have particularly impacted on the elderly and students. “We’re holding this forum so that public transport users in Geelong can voice their concerns and also to give them an opportunity to offer constructive solutions to the problems created by Daniel Andrews.” The Public Transport Forum will be at Burdoo Reserve, Grovedale, at 7pm on 25 August. Public transport shadow minister David Hodgett and Rural and Regional Transport shadow parliamen-

tary secretary Simon Ramsay will also attend. Public Transport Users Association Geelong convenor Paul Westcott welcomed the forum as long as it was not simply “a bashing”. “If it is a genuine attempt to find out what people see as the problems and find a solution then it can help,” Mr Westcott said. “Both sides of politics bear some responsibility for both sets of changes and I would be disappointed if the forum was just political.” The Government had not responded to the Independent’s request for comment before the paper went to press.
Hoon threat A HOON is endangering lives at Hamlyn Heights with dangerous driving, according to police. They called for information about the driver of a matt-black Commodore involved in burnouts and other illegal antics around Vines Rd’s shopping centre and other parts of the suburb.
Surveillance bid MORE surveillance cameras could be on the way to Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula if City Hall wins a funding application to State Government. The City wants $181,900 to install cameras in shopping areas at Belmont, Norlane, Corio, Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and Drysdale and to upgrade surveillance in central Geelong.
Strait crossing A TORQUAY athlete has paddled across Bass Strait in a kayak with an army veteran. John Jacoby and Queensland’s Brian Freeman believe they completed the second fastest crossing on record, paddling from Wilsons Promonteory to Little Musselroe Bay in 60 hours.

The 19-year-old man was yesterday bailed to face court in September over a series of offences including unlicensed driving, reckless conduct endangering a person and resisting arrest.

CALLS for police help in Geelong’s mall “reduced substantially” over the past five years, a traders forum has heard. Police said crime rates were also down while offering security audits to traders at the forum on improving Lt Malop St Mall. The police statements contrasted with public perceptions of the mall, which had national media attention earlier this year when a brutal assault was filmed and posted to social media. Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief Bernadette Uzelac said the forum was one of a series to “address the issues in the mall”. “These forums give interested traders a chance to discuss their challenges and present possible solutions where everyone can work together to better activate the space,” Ms Uzelac said. “We’re already seeing positive change with the resurgence

Community body to pay $5500 costs DRYSDALE Clifton Springs Community Association has lost its bid to void a costs claim against it over a failed bid to stop a service station development at Drysdale. Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) ordered the community association to pay $5500 in legal costs to Caltex franchisee Milemaker Petroleum by December. Milemaker Petroleum had asked VCAT for $26,000 in legal costs. The company is building a service station at the junction of Jetty Rd and High St Drysdale. Community association committee member Patrick Hughes said the group was not allowed to put its case at the costs hearing. “Milemaker’s lawyers argued that the association’s application should be dismissed, as it had been submitted after the due date for such applications. “The chair of the hearing agreed, dismissed the application and invited Milemaker to apply for legal costs.” Mr Hughes said the association’s request for VCAT to rule out imposing costs received wide community support. Local federal MPs Richard Marles and Sarah Henderson, state MP and Environment Minister Lisa Neville, councillor Rod Macdonald and community groups backed the association, he said. Ms Neville wrote to VCAT with a warning that any costs order against the group “would act as a serious disincentive for any like community organisation involving itself in a local planning matter, to the possible detriment of the community and the planning outcome”. An independent online petition gathered 349 signatures in support of the group. Mr Hughes said the association would ask Milemaker to write off the $5500 as a gesture of goodwill to the community.

A BEARDED, balding and bootless 27-year-old man appeared briefly in Geelong Magistrates Court yesterday over a spate of alleged robberies in the central city area. Police charged Michael Goncalves, of no-known abode, with three attempted robberies of five people in a single night this week. Gonclaves allegedly committed all the robberies over half an hour. Police arrested Goncalves at a McDonald’s restaurant in Ryrie St early yesterday. Police alleged he made three demands for money between 11.45pm Wednesday and 12.15am yesterday. Goncalves allegedly demanded money in James St before moving along to the corner of Malop and Moorabool Sts.
Police alleged that he then made a further demand for cash when he entered a taxi outside a Village cinema complex on Ryrie St. Goncalves was later arrested a short distance along Ryrie St at the McDonald’s restaurant. He was wearing a red sweatshirt with Indianapolis emblazoned across the front when he appeared in court yesterday. Goncalves folded his arms and then plunged them into his pockets during his hearing. Two guards flanked him throughout his court appearance. The court was told Goncalves needed urgent medication because he suffered from convulsions and depression. He did not make an application for bail and was remanded to face the same court on 18 August for a mention hearing.

Mayor backs takeover in CBD By PAUL MILLAR TAKING charge of planning for major projects in central Geelong is a helping hand rather than strong-arm tactics from State Government, according to Darryn Lyons. The Geelong mayor, often at odds with the region’s state and federal politicians, welcomed this week’s announcement, saying it would speed up progress on
‘Helping hand’ to get city moving, says Lyons city projects. “The Central Geelong Taskforce was moving things too slowly and I want things done quicker. This will give it a big nudge and get things moving,” Cr Lyons told the Independent. The taskforce was formed to oversee the development of business incentives and programs and
to identify events and activities to add vitality to the heart of the city. But Cr Lyons said progress was too slow under the direction of the taskforce, so he supported the Government’s intervention. The Government will install an authority to take charge of major development projects in-
cluding Kardinia Park, Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s redevelopment and proposals for a convention centre. The authority was a pre-election commitment to help the rejuvenation of central Geelong. Cr Lyons said the Government now had to lead the way in central Geelong “quick-time”.
“It’s fantastic that they’re focused on Geelong. As the mayor, I’ve been lobbying for more projects and will continue to do so.’ Premier Daniel Andrews said the city area needed more than words and plans. “It needs action. Traders are losing patience, locals are losing faith and Geelong is losing time,”
Mr Andrews said. “The Authority will get the right people in the right place to make the right decisions,” he said. Member for Geelong Christine Couzens said action was “long overdue“. “This will clean up Geelong’s CBD and attract the investment we need to get moving.”
Program unlocks justice system mysteries for refugees New blow for By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong staff RECEIVING an official looking letter requesting a citizen to undertake jury duty can be daunting, even for those who have some understanding of the system. But for new arrivals in Australia, to whom the concept of jury duty is foreign, receiving such a letter can elicit fears and doubts. A Karen family that received a jury duty letter was so uncertain about it they threw it in the bin, explained CatholicCare’s Clare Barrett. Similar examples promoted the agency to run a justice education program for Geelong’s newly arrived Karen families. “Most of them have lived in refugee camps for a long time and normal civil community life is so distant,” Ms Barrett said. “They have different cultural laws, the civil structures are different and this program aims to let them know what to do now they live in Australia.” Program coordinator Nestor Estampa said the program, run in conjunction with Geelong Magistrates Court, offered practical support to Karen families. “We have a key speaker each week from a number of agencies and services presenting relevant legal information to this group of shy and reticent Burmese
DUTIES: Program coordinator Nestor Estampa, with secondary students Dah Dah Poe and Abraham Htoo providing interpretation Picture: REG RYAN help in the background. 142947 refugees,” Mr Estampa explained. “We have representation from Victoria Police, Minerva Services, Consumer Affairs, Dispute Resolution, Family Relationship Centre, Sherriff’s Office and others. “The Justice Education Program is part of a one-year community-based
education program and Karen families are consulted on what topics they like to know more about. “The main thing we explain to them is that there are people and places to go to ask for help.” Mr Estampa said North Geelong Secondary College students Dah Dah Poe
and Abraham Htoo helped with interpretation. Participant Belly Belly said that without the program she would not know where to turn for help when problems arose. “It helps us get to know what to do and plan for the future,” she said.
From page 1 This week’s announcement brought the total reductions to around 600, the company said. BAE had hoped to benefit from a $40 billion federal investment in shipbuilding but most of the work will go to Adelaide. BAE Systems Australia director of maritime Bill Saltzer said the redundancies were necessary because of the project-based nature of the business. “Our employee numbers must match the needs and status of our ongoing and upcoming projects.” Mr Saltzer said the next major contacts for Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) and Future Frigates would not begin until 2018 and 2020. “We look forward to engaging with the Federal Government so we can better-understand the implications this will have for our shipbuilding operations in Australia and the contribution we can potentially make as this country’s leading naval shipbuilding prime contractor. “BAE Systems has world class designs for OPVs and frigates and our highly skilled workforce in Williamstown is unique in having experience building both of these types of vessel in Australia.”

A FUND-RAISING race around the outback in a plane will be a change of pace for a local professor when he takes to the air later this month. Geoff Nicholson is gearing up to fly from Esperance, in Western Australia, to Queensland’s Hamilton Island in the Outback Air Race, a time-trial based competition testing flying precision and airmanship. The event, supporting the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), runs from 23 August to 4 September and resembles a car rally through remote parts of Australia. “Including the flight from Le-

thbridge to Esperance and back home from Hamilton Island the distance we will travel will be around 10,000km,” Professor Nicholson said. The race will be a change of pace for a man more used to writing papers and grant applications for Australian Catholic University. “I'm competing with my brother, Peter, an ex-RAAF fighter and test pilot, as the Bald Eagles. Both of us inherited a lack of hair and a passion for flying from our father, Keith, a former Second World War combat pilot. “Peter’s wife, Marie, is the third member of the crew despite her full head of hair.”
Team Bald Eagles aims to raise $10,000 from friends and sponsors to help the RFDS provide essential medical and retrieval services to Australians living in rural and remote areas with limited access to mainstream medical services. Prof Nicholson has participated in six previous races. “I started flying in 1968 after catching the bug from my father and I initially entered the race with him as my co-pilot before he took his final flight in his mid80s. “It’s always great fun.“ Prof Nicholson is a leading researcher at ACU’s Institute for Health and Ageing. Lara residents’ relief as ‘win-win’ settles trucking operations dispute
Rocke’s rolling on By PAUL MILLAR
DOOR MAN: Mayor Darryn Lyons launches new developments at City Hall’s Picture: REG RYAN industrial precinct near Corio. 142853
LARA residents will sleep easier after a heavy-duty transporter revealed it would move away from their homes to a growing industrial precinct near Corio. Rocke Brothers’ around-the-clock shipping container movements have prompted complaints about slush, mud and excessive noise as the company operates from part of a Josies Transport depot. But in a win-win situation Rocke Brothers announced this week it would move its Lara operations, including 45 employees and contractors, to the council-owned precincet in a $10 million investment deal. The company expected to be operating out of the Corio depot early next year.
Managing director Matt Simmons said Rocke Brothers was “committed to being part of rebuilding economic enterprise in Geelong”. The industrial site, called Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct (GRREP), opened for land sales eight years ago but ward councillor Tony Ansett said it was now going from strength to strength. “The City has invested a lot of resources in getting the land at the GRREP to this stage and it’s certainly paying off. “With excellent access to the Geelong port, Avalon Airport and the regional road and rail infrastructure, it’s an ideal location for the establishment of large, export-oriented manufacturing and production support industries.”
Mayor Darryn Lyons said almost half the 130-hectare development was now sold or under contract. The mayor said the GRREP was a case of ’build it and we will come’, with new tenants on the way. “The City is in the process of negotiating the sale of nine blocks of more than 60 hectares of land,” he said. “We’re talking over $1 billion of investment and over 1000 jobs.” Cr Lyons officially opened two new roads at the precinct on Wednesday. Former Geelong mayor Ken Jarvis said in 2013 that City Hall had spent “at least“ $10 million on the precinct for only one land sale in six years.

Billboard to go in vets’ honour By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG will have a fullyfledged Vietnam Veterans Avenue of Honour after a council decision this week. Councillors voted to introduce a heritage overlay and remove a community billboard at the existing Avenue of Honour site on Melbourne Rd, North Geelong. The Independent reported last year that Geelong Vietnam Veterans Association had requested the billboard's relocation so the group could create a $130,000 legacy memorial. Council's veterans affairs portfolio holder, Rod Macdonald,
said the changes would be a mark of respect for Vietnam Veterans. “The Avenue of Honour is one of only three in Victoria commemorating Vietnam War service,” Cr Macdonald said. “Council recognises the importance of the avenue, dedicated to the memory of the 521 Australian soldiers who died during the Vietnam War and the 60,000 troops who served between 1962 and 1973. By introducing a greater Geelong planning scheme overlay we're protecting the area so future generations can come and visit a place of reflection and peace for years to come.” City Hall would move the
Industry Growth Centres
billboard to an “appropriate” site after May so forward bookings were unaffected, Cr Macdonald said. Geelong Vietnam Veterans Association’s Reiny Nieuwenhof called the vote “fantastic”. “We're now waiting on the Victorian Veterans Council to approve a grant application for the memorial and we are reasonably confident it will come through ... then work can start before the end of the year.” Mr Nieuwenhof said the association wanted the project completed by the Battle of Long Tan’s 50th anniversary in 2016.
Torquay sessions hear anti-frackers By PAUL MILLAR FRACKING protesters gathered at Torquay this week for State Government hearings on unconventional onshore gas exploration. Up to 30 protesters attended the hearings as part of an inquiry into the controversial extraction of underground gas. The investigation is considering issues including health risks, property owners' legal rights, impacts on property values, consequences for agricultural production and effects on water quality. The inquiry will also consider fracking's potential to provide affordable energy. City of Greater Geelong, Colac Otway Shire and Barwon Water produced written submissions

Two cars go Buckets&Bouquets in two days POLICE have seized two cars from a North Geelong man – including his girlfriend’s – after allegedly detecting him driving on drugs with a disqualified licence on successive days. State Highway Patrol officers impounded the 19-year-old’s own car after pulling him over in Corio on 6 August. A roadside drug test returned a positive result. Highway patrol members pulled him over again the following day while driving his girlfriend’s red Honda Accord in North Geelong without number plates. He allegedly returned another postive drug test. Police expected to charge him on summons with driving while disqualified and other drivingrelated offences.

‘Big delays’ for Pioneer works “VicRoads advises that significant delays may be experienced by drivers during peak travel times. Drivers should use the recommended detour or seek an alternate route where possible. “The entrance to the APCO Service Station and McDonald’s restaurant on South Valley Rd will remain open for the duration of these works. “To ensure the safety of all road users and road workers, VicRoads urges drivers to obey the 40km/h speed limit that will be in place for the duration of works. Pedestrians will be directed around the roadworks and are advised to follow signage.”
VicRoads said work on the duplication of Pioneer Rd had forced the closure. The duplication should be complete by mid-2016, VicRoads said. “Once complete, the improvements to Pioneer Rd and South Valley Rd will result in two lanes of traffic in each direction from Rau Crt, Grovedale, to Glastonbury Dve, Highton. This includes a new duplicated bridge over Waurn Ponds Creek, the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Pioneer Rd and Meadowvale Dve, facilities for cyclists, safer pedestrian crossings and a better connection with the Princes Hwy.”

MOTORISTS face a month of long delays during peak travel times around one of southern Geelong’s busiest intersections, VicRoads has warned. Highton-bound lanes of South Valley Rd will be closed from the intersection of Pioneer and Colac Rds to Glastonbury Dve until 13 September, the roads authority said. “Drivers wanting to travel to Highton on South Valley Rd from the Colac Rd intersection will be diverted via Colac Rd, Reynolds Rd and Fryers Rd,” VicRoad said. “South Valley Road will remain open to Grovedale-bound traffic travelling from Highton.

Head competition chef Andrew Ireland said a limited selection of ingredients added to the six-hour challenge. “The students were judged on taste, presentation, their cookery skills and their professionalism within the kitchen," Mr Ireland said.
“The final decision was so close we needed to do a count back. I’m not sure I've witnessed that level of skill in cookery competitions before, especially considering some contestants were patisserie chefs and first-year apprentices.” Patisserie students Tiffany O’Brien and Chris Vanek won encouragement awards, receiving signed copies of a Maggie Beer cookbook. Food writer Gail Thomas, bakery founder Tony Spoljaric and hospitality expert Mary-Ellen Belleville judged the competition.

Letters WHY IS it socially acceptable to badmouth cats and their owners but everyone throws up their arms in protest or outrage if someone criticises dogs or their owners? Lock Up Or Give Up Cats of Highton (Buckets & Bouquets, 31 July) tried to claim that all cat owners get from their pets is “bloody feathers and foul faeces”. If not for cats our homes, businesses and streets would be awash with disease-carrying rats and mice. Why do people hear and focus on cats’ apparent destruction of wildlife but feign deafness to dogs barking all night and ignore them when they poo everywhere or get loose from backyards and maul innocent bystanders or other animals? Dogs can kill, and not just wildlife. Innocent people, most tragically of all defenceless babies, have been mauled to death by dogs. There has never ever been a case of a cat mauling anyone to death and any anti-cat person who said otherwise would be delusional. Everyone, stop hating cats, they have just as much right to live as other creatures. Consider the saying, ‘Oh, they’re just a big pussycat’, which means someone seems bad or evil but is actually gentle, loving and cuddly. That’s what cats are: gentle, loving, affectionate, smart and beautiful animals that are victims of bad press, misinformation, stupid stereotypes and hateful prejudice. Suzanne Bridson Herne Hill
Not Goodes enough, Bob BOB THOMPSON (Letters, 7 August) should have been more informed and empathic before he criticised Adam Goodes. Once again we heard the comment that someone should toughen up. No wonder mental illness and suicide are so prevalent in Australia when people who are sensitive or emotional are viewed as being weak. You have to be tough and skilled to play AFL, especially at the standard of Adam Goodes, but this is not just about football. We all know that giving the finger is very offensive. I would not be offended if anyone pretended to throw a spear at me. It is laughable that anyone could use the excuse that offensive behaviour toward entertainers is acceptable because it has been going on since Roman days.
Amazing Tim testament to human spirit I HAD one of the most amazing experiences of my life in the presence of Tim McCallum. When you sit and listen to this man's story you cannot walk away without being touched in mind, soul, heart and spirit. He is a true testament to the human spirit, proving that the impossible is actually possible. I am in awe of his incredible voice but even more so of the man behind the voice. I walked out of that auditorium with a new appreciation of all that is good in my life, all because of this inspiring, gracious and humble man. Mary Bicanic Bell Post Hill
INSPIRATION: Geelong's Tim McCallum. We have improved as human beings since then but we still have a long way to go. Suzanne Roberts Newcomb
Labor’s regional rail fiasco AS SHADOW parliamentary secretary for rural and regional transport, I had the opportunity over the winter break to experience first-hand regional rail and bus networks across the state. In Mildura, Bendigo, Shepparton, Ballarat and Geelong the story was the same: bus timetables do not connect with trains; peak-hour trains are overcrowded; car parks are overflowing; services are unreliable; adequate rolling stock is lacking; signals are breaking down; tracks close; services to rural and remote towns are infrequent; and the implementation of regional rail link was a fiasco. I found delays at the Deer Park junction where the Geelong line joins the Ballarat line, insufficient carriages on both the Ballarat and Geelong lines, and insufficient services for commuters causing chaos and frustration. The Andrews government opposed the east-west link and ditched the Westgate distributor. It will now saddle Melbourne-bound travellers and commuters with tolls on a proposed western distributor and a 70-year lease for the Port of Melbourne. These measures will further congest traffic movement around the port and the Melbourne CBD, making it harder for regional motorists travelling in Melbourne. Public transport users and motorists are frustrat-
ed and angry with the Andrews Labor Government, which is incompetently managing transport issues with a total disregard for regional Victorians. Simon Ramsay MP Member for Western Victoria Region
Right decision on marriage I CONGRATULATE members of the federal coalition for the recent decision on marriage equality. It seems strange that many of the promoters of marriage equality who wanted a conscience vote in parliament now oppose a plebiscite. Do they prefer change through lobbying activity, such as caused Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson to alter her position? A plebiscite would allow a balanced debate on the effects of redefining the meaning of marriage. We will want to know whether traders, like the clergy, will be free to act according to conscience. Would marriage equality be the final demand in the acceptance of loving relationships? For example, would legislation be proposed for polygamy? When we abandon the culture and wisdom of the past all things become possible. The Biblical code of Judaeo-Christian morality is being actively opposed in many areas, the most important of which is the family. The next generation is being shaped by our decisions. The children of today and tomorrow need the blessing of a good home, under the loving nurture of their natural parents. Pastor Frank Lowry Aberdeen St Baptist Church

Bill’s gender-bender THE NATIONAL ALP conference endorsed Bill Shorten’s call for women to be 50 per cent of all parliamentarians by 2025. Why are women so privileged? Why stop at gender if inclusion is your aim? What about Aborigines and ethnic minorities? Is the working class under-represented? A survey years ago found that 70 per cent of MPs were from private schools, so should there be a quota for state-schooled MPs? Other groups might want in on the action. Should there be more gays in parliament? What of religion? Are more Protestants than Catholics elected? What of the Jewish, Muslim or Hindu minorities? Shouldn't they be guaranteed seats? The list is virtually endless but such lists would hopelessly confound democratic processes to the point of obfuscation. This is where women have the advantage. Gender can be immediately determined but not as a member of the above groups without additional information. It’s also contentious whether greater numbers of women in parliament would create more-diverse and better-representative representation. Most women preselected on the Labor side are generally leftleaning, whereas women on the conservative side are more traditionally-minded and less keen to enter politics. If women haven’t availed themselves of the opportunities available to them then whose fault is that? It’s certainly not the fault of men. Democracy is about genuine free choice, not equal outcomes, which is how it should stay if the merit principle and democracy are to work properly. Alan Barron Grovedale
Corangamite flying away SUPPORTERS of former Speaker Bronwyn Bishop have suggested the principal reason why she took a taxpayer-funded $5227 helicopter flight to Geelong for a party fundraiser was to ensure “she could spend more time with her many friends in the Geelong community”. Spare me. We may live in a provincial city but the 72-year-old functionary should not have treated us as proverbial village idiots. Her behaviour has almost certainly cost the Abbott Government the marginal federal seat of Corangamite. Michael J Gamble Belmont

IT’S NOTHING but fun when selfproclaimed party band The Chantoozies takes over the stage to remind audiences of just how big they were in the ‘80s and ‘90s. The current line-up of Tottie Goldsmith, Ally Flower and Eve von Bibra will head to the Sphinx Hotel on 22 August to continue celebrating the joy of live music. “It’s fun,” Goldsmith told the Independent while helping pilot a threetonne truck out of Dubbo on a regional tour of New South Wales for the play Sex With Strangers. “We love doing live gigs because people of our generation are out again, enjoying the freedom after having done the hard yards raising the family. “People still have a hankering for remembering how amazing the ‘80s and ‘90s were. The music was incredible and we’re honoured to have been part of it. “People of our era all love live music. They know it and it’s what we understand, it’s part of the culture of our time. “People are bringing their kids, particularly their daughters, and they love it. “I hate to admit it but we’re retro,” Goldsmith laughed. And she knows what she’s talking about, having given up career prospects to start a family. Now it’s all about the shared enjoyment with audiences who recall The Chantoozies with fondness. That feeling has been part of the organic life of the band through the years, originally formed for a one

JIMMY Little had a voice with a touch of velvet that carried him through an era of change. Now the story and songs of the legendary indigenous performer will be revived in Geelong later this month. Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) will host the only Victorian performance of a Country Song, a fictional roadtrip based on the life of an artist who became the standard bearer for many of his generation and a poster boy for Indigenous performers, The show celebrates the healing power of music in the turbulent 1970s, featuring the songs of Little as well as fellow Aboriginal musicians Auriel Andrew and Bobby McLeod. Once a smiling, cheeky child of Vaudevillians, Little, played by Michael Tuahine, takes the audience through the thoughts of an artist who must weigh up the political power of his voice. Little, who died in 2012, was an adored musician, actor and advocate whose career spanned six decades. A Yorta Yorta man, he was raised on a mission in New South Wales. Little recorded his first single in 1956 before rising to promi-

MICHAEL Hill Corio Store will hold a special VIP event on Tuesday 18 August from 9am to 9pm. Store manager Jade Drummy said every purchase on the day will go into the draw to win a diamond watch. Michael Hill has been around since 1979 and is now a global brand across four countries – Canada, the US, Australia and New Zealand. But being global doesn’t mean it has lost sight of how important local customers
are according to Jade. “We offer exceptional customer service, 10ct minimum gold content, superb quality diamonds and an inhouse team of master craftsmen,” she said. “At the Corio Store we have long standing staff, Lyn and Ajsela, who are diamond experts – both have been here eight years.” And, of course, they offer all the usual Michael Hill services and products including diamond, gold and silver jewellery as well
as jewellery cleaning, inspections, repairs, handmakes, amazing interest free terms, a comprehensive set of warranties and international lifetime diamond warranty. Watches also come with lifetime battery replacement. The Corio shop at Corio Village is open Monday to Wednesday from 9am to 5.30pm, 9am to 7pm Thursdays, 9am to 9pm on Friday, Saturday from 9am to 5pm and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
Help for those who need most A GAME-CHANGING opportunity has presented itself to improve community services for the most vulnerable children, young people and families in Geelong and the Barwon Region, with the establishment of Barwon Child, Youth and Family. Barwon Child, Youth and Family CEO Sandy Morrison officially launched the new entity at a breakfast held at Deakin University’s Waterfront Campus in Geelong recently. The new agency was formed after the successful merger between three of Geelong’s most respected community service providers in Barwon Youth, Glastonbury Community Services and Time for Youth. “The objectives of the merger were not necessarily about be-
1195211-EG33-15
coming a bigger agency but more so about an agency that is better equipped to provide stronger support services to the most complex and at risk children, young people and families across the region,” said Ms Morrison. “We’ve listened to the voice of our clients and all too frequently individuals and families accessing services such as ours have multiple needs,” she said. “Our new agency has been developed ‘for the people’ and will allow for much more integrated service delivery, meaning that if a client with multiple needs enters our door they will have access to a diverse suite of services catering for individuals and families of all ages.” Former Deputy Commissioner of Victoria Police and recently elected Chairman of the
Board for Barwon Child, Youth and Family John Frame believes the new entity has the opportunity to shape the future of community services across the region. “We’ve got a unique opportunity to leverage off the strongest elements of the three founding agencies,” said Mr Frame. “We are now an agency that is based on integration and multidisciplinary care that puts the needs of our people first. “We are excited by what the future holds for us as an organisation and for the streamlined approach we can now take to tackling some of the region’s most pressing issues,” said Mr Frame. More information about Barwon Child, Youth and Family can be accessed at www.barwonchildyouthfamily.org.au.

GEELONG residents will have a unique opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes view of a veterinary emergency centre when U-Vet Geelong Animal Emergency opens its doors to the public for an open day in September. Members of the public can go behind the scenes between 10am and 12.30pm on Saturday 12 September, at the clinic at 102 Fyans Street, Geelong. Hospital director Phillipa Power said: “U-Vet Geelong Animal Emergency provides an important after hours emergency veterinary service to the community. “You just never know when your pet will need emergency treatment and this is a great opportunity to learn about how our experienced vets and nurses manage pet emergencies. “It’s also a great way for children to understand what happens to their beloved pet during a medical emergency in a non-threatening way, and for mums and dads to get some practical tips too.” The open day will feature fun and interesting activities for the whole family, opportunities to learn about pet care and the chance to ask the experienced U-Vet veterinarians and veterinary nurses lots of questions. Families with small children are encouraged to bring along a favourite teddy or toy animal. For further information and to register your interest please visit www.u-vet.com.au/geelong-emergency U-Vet Geelong Animal Emergency is part of the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences.

a perfect range for a dog’s nutrition. “Our fresh pet meals have been sought out by vets, who are currently looking to stock our products,” Peter said. Geelong Pets Direct sells fresh dog food in two different ranges. The weekly premium range starts at $23.10 per pack and comes in small, medium and large sizes. The Big Value Meal range is sold at $4 a kilo and includes cooked rice, seasonal fruit and vegetables with a choice of premium raw beef, chicken, veal or roo mince. Peter recommends the messfree purse size options for customers. “They’re all packed individu-
ally - you just tear it, pour it, bin it.” Geelong Pets Direct launched its new user-friendly website four months ago. “We have a feature for automatic re-ordering. Customers can cancel and suspend any time – they’re never locked into any contracts,” Peter said. Geelong Pets Direct’s courier delivers 50 to 80 orders a week to customers all over Geelong and surrounding areas. The business also stocks collars, leashes, toys, flea and worming kits, beds, kennels and accessories. If customers find the same item cheaper in Geelong, Geelong Pets Direct will beat it by 10 per cent.

Lowdown on sporty Mazda By EWAN KENNEDY MAZDA MX-5 significantly changed the direction of automotive history when it was introduced to a surprised world way back in 1989. Until then every tightening safety regulations had caused car companies to pull out of designing open-top cars. Mazda, ever the innovator, fought back with this and the MX-5 was the result. Not only is it now by far the biggest selling roadster of all time, the MX-5 made other marques reconsider their strategies and now you won’t find a company of any significance that doesn’t have at least one convertible on its sales list. Significantly, the styling of the fourth generation Mazda MX-5 sports roadster takes a completely different direction to its predecessors. While the second and third generations (1997 and 2005) were evolutions of the original 1989 model, the gen-four design-
Model range Roadster 1.5-litre two-door convertible: $31,990 (manual), $33,990 (automatic). Roadster GT 1.5-litre two-door convertible: $37,990 (manual), $39,990 (automatic). Roadster 2.0-litre two-door convertible: $34,490 (manual), $36,490 (automatic). Roadster GT 2.0-litre two-door convertible: $39,550 (manual), $41,550 (automatic).
ers have tossed away the plans and started with blank computer screens. When I first saw the new MX-5 at the Paris Motor Show late last year I had reservations about its shape. Reservations that haven’t completely gone away. Existing Mazda MX-5 owners also seem divided on the new style and it will be interesting to see if there’s the sort of outcry what overwhelmed Porsche when it tried to replace the original 911 shape with more modern ones, the 924 and 928, back in the 1970s and ’80s. There’s no doubt the all-new
MX-5 falls into line with the other so-called Kodo design of the current Mazda range, something that certainly shows up in the TV commercial that shows the roadster leading a V-shaped group of Mazda hatches and SUVs. Mazda MX-5 is offered with two different engines. A price-leading ($31,990) 1.5-litre, four-cylinder six-speed manual MX-5 is certainly appealing. This engine produces a modest 96 kW of power and 150 Nm of torque. There’s also a 2.0-litre (118 kW / 200 Nm) that comes in at $34,490 with the six-speed manual.

IT’S THE personal touch that sets Keleman Motors apart. Gary Keleman has been in the business since 1982, so he must be doing something right. His care and attention to detail has enhanced his hard-won reputation in the car repair trade. The personal service includes a drop off and pick up service to the city. Gary is known as a Mazda specialist but his tried and true slogan, ‘Anything on any car’, sums up his approach. “We do all major and minor repairs, including exhaust, brakes, clutches and suspension,” Gary explains. “Plus we do the full range of upgrades and servicing, including air-conditioner re-gassing.” Gary and Mazda go back a long way, including his top qualifications in the repair and servicing of the famous rotary engine. Gary uses only genuine parts in his new-car repair and servicing work. “This way our customers can be sure their factory warranties are not affected.” He says customers should be able to receive dealer level service without paying dealer level prices. “We’re always happy to give a quote so the customer knows exactly what they are up for,” he says. Gary’s workshop boasts the latest in diagnostic and scanner equipment. “We’re proud of the quality of all work we undertake and our competitive rates.” Keleman Motors is at shop 3, 13 Crown St, South Geelong, phone 5229 9555.

Toolboxes and trailers leader opens store in North Geelong
T J B
MW TOOLBOX and Trailer Centre, a national market leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of aluminium toolboxes, trailer and canopy products, has arrived in Geelong. The latest addition to the MW network of 26 stores is ideal for tradesmen, corporate and fleet operators as well as families and holiday-makers. MW has more than 15 years of industry expertise, manufacturing more than 100,000 products annually in Australia through its five factories. As well as a strong retail customer base, MW works with fleet customers to ensure products meet all client needs and time frames, with a national hassle-free warranty, support and service. MW can custom-build toolboxes, canopies and trailers providing a quotation and design service. A large range of standard designs is also available, with trade solutions for plumbers, carpenters, electricians, mechanics and decorators. Manufacturing locally means a quick turn-around time of two to three weeks based on the complexity of the design. MW’s products are known for their heavy-duty toughness, being fully water resistant and designed to maximise security. Toolboxes feature a full-length piano hinge and locks can be keyed alike. The popularity of road trip holidays also sees travellers popping into MW Toolbox and Trailer Centres to order camping canopies and secure storage. The Geelong store is at 257 Melbourne Rd, North Geelong, phone 9799 2880 or the national hotline on 1800 55 44 34 or visit the MW Toolbox and Trailer Centre website at toolboxcentre.com.au.

Elite Taekwondo Australia’s head instructor Manni teaches people that self-defence starts with learning to avoid circumstances that can lead you into danger.
Best defence SELF DEFENCE – it’s a term that is thrown around a lot, but few people know what it really means. Those wanting to learn the ins and outs of self-defence should ask Elite Taekwondo Australia’s head instructor, Manni. From humble beginnings, Manni learnt how to look after himself from a young age. He took to taekwondo as a means to defend himself and as a way of focusing and creating discipline. Manni has 42 years of experience in taekwondo and has also worked in security. “I teach people that self-de-
fence starts with learning to avoid circumstances that can lead you into danger. “Through the Elite Taekwondo and women’s self-defence classes I run, I explain the real situations you can face on the streets. “We learn to avoid a confrontation, to recognise and look for signs before putting yourself into danger and we learn what to do in the event of conflict. “Only by understanding everything that surrounds these situations can one truly increase their confidence and increase their ability for self-defence,” Manni said.

‘Good time’ for Hawks Anglers in break Chris Pitman
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
IT WAS the round-one set back that has taken Geelong until this point to overcome – the 62-point drubbing at the hands of Hawthorn. Geelong is finally on a winning run and coach Chris Scott agreed this week that it was as good a time as any to meet the Hawks. “It’s a good chance to see how far we’ve come in a way but we won’t be measuring it based on one game,” Scott told this week’s press conference at Kardinia Park. “It’s an important game for us, there’s no shying away from that, but, to be frank, it feels like the last six weeks have been important. “Three or four weeks ago the Hawks looked unbeatable and I’m not falling into the fact that they’re a little bit off now. “At our best we can present a challenge for them but it will need to be

“And if the game is on their terms they’re almost impossible to stop.” Scott was pleased his team had finally began producing the improvement it had been working toward all season. “We’ve been defending well, which has helped our contested ball and vice versa and both those things have helped our attack. “We’re clear and the players are clear on what we need to do to get those numbers looking better. “The uncontrollable part to a certain extent is what the opposition do. In terms of that challenge it doesn’t get much greater this week. “We’re still confident the things we talked about the last month or so are possible to be executed this week.” Scott considered the evenness of the competition and finding form when it counted were the keys.
“The way the season is going it’s difficult to get a handle on where everyone sits and I suspect that when it gets to the pointy end of the season it’ll be about whose going the best at the time.” Steve Johnson, forgiven for his slip-up against Brisbane, would be selected for his 250th game, Scott confirmed. “He’s a lock and we’re confident he’ll play well. We would have loved to have him in the team last week but the positive of him missing is that physically he’ll be in better shape for this one. “I’m pretty confident he feels like he owes the team one.” Scott used words like “genius”, “self-starter”, “entertaining”, “exhilarating” and “exciting” when describing his place in the coach’s box as “the best seat in the house at the Stevie J show” for the past five years.
to chase bluefin WITH a break in the weather on Saturday anglers travelled to Port Fairy on mass is search of bluefin tuna. After arriving at daybreak, Kevin Hunter and I set a spread of lures in 48m southeast of Lady Julia Percy Island. We soon hooked and boated an 11kg tuna that devoured a Samaki Pacemaker. Soon after Kevin hooked into a tuna that busted him off on a deep run. As the day progressed the fish went deep, holding at 20m to 30m and proving hard to tempt. Anglers who persisted to late afternoon discovered that the tuna began feeding off the surface where they were willing to take small stick bait lures cast into the surface commotion. Tuna were also boated down the road at Portland where they were in small numbers but up to an impressive 80kg. The Hopkins River was also popular down the western district, with anglers boating excellent numbers of bream and estuary perch. Michael Bettanin cast lures along the river edges, landing a well-conditioned 38cm bream with a slowlyworked soft plastic in tight along the cliff faces. Tony Hinds fished the Hopkins last weekend, finding numbers of estuary perch and chucky bream to 41cm. Tony boated 13 bream in one session with lures such as Atomic Shads and vibes. Back home, Queenscliff produced large whiting and squid for anglers who sought out productive water. The grassbeds to the left of the harbour were a hot sport for both species. Symonds Channel out from Queenscliff was a go-to location for gummy sharks, with fish to 10kg caught. Anglers using fresh baits such as squid or salmon fillets achieved the best results. Clifton Springs held reasonable numbers of squid to 600g in 3m to 4m over the patchy grass beds. Small size 2.5 to 3 jigs in natural colours did the trick. Hugh Hanson fished the beach at Moggs Creek where his soft plastics caught feisty Australian salmon to 40cm, which gave him a run for his money on light trout gear. Noah Quail cast ever-reliable Tassie Devil lures around Buckley Falls to land a fat redfin of almost 40cm. Other anglers also fishing the freshwater sections of the Barwon River encountered carp to 6kg, with super-sweet corn kernels the number-one bait. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir continued producing redfin to 45cm for anglers prepared to put in the time. Hugh Hanson cast lures from the main rock wall to bank a 40cm fish. Trout were by-catch at Wurdee Boluc but, with some over 50cm, it was worthwhile targeting them on shallow-diving hard-body lures. Lake Purrumbete remained consistent for brown trout to 2kg. Anglers trolling the east bank at first and last light did well, while during the height of the day mudeyes suspended deep under bubble floats tempted some trout. A forecast of improving weather over the next week should make Port Fairy worth the trip for bluefin tuna. Closer to home, the area from Queenscliff Bight through to the mouth of Swan Bay should be ideal squid, while freshwater anglers could try lakes Purrumbete or Bullen Merri for Chinook salmon, bass and brown trout.
HAVING A BALL: Malcolm Jobson, left, and Kevin Woods, right, with walking soccer participants at Norlane’s Leisure Time centre.
Old and inactive walk right up for easy soccer games By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN WALKING soccer has become a hit in Geelong since it was publicised in the Independent a month ago. The new form of sport for older or inactive people has “taken off” even though its six-week trial period has yet to finish. Melanie Thomas, from Leisure Networks, said more players were registering weekly and a regular core of members had been established.
“We’ve had women joining, we’ve had older men bringing their sons along as well,” Thomas said. “As the program grows we hope to take it to multiple locations and will also start a women’s program in the coming months.” Run through the VicHealth Regional Sport Program, walking soccer aims to develop opportunities to increase the number of people participating in sport. The game focuses on people cur-
rently inactive or who have low levels of physical activity. “The key difference in the rules from the regular game is that if a player runs it’s a free-kick to the other team,” Thomas explained. “This restriction, together with a ban on slide tackles, promotes cardiovascular fitness whilst reducing stress on the body and avoiding injuries.” Thomas said the time length of each game could vary, dependent on
fitness levels and the number of players. “We also see it as a great social outlet, where people can get together after the game and chat about the match and life in general.” Matches are played at Norlane’s Anakie Rd Leisure Time Centre from 7pm Wednesdays, with costs been capped at $4 a player. Thomas said more information was available by phoning her on 5224 9932 or emailing melanie@leisurenetworks.org.
