Racism ruckus By CASEY NEILL

1170560-ACM06-15

“ALL Anglos are voting against this decision.” This comment from councillor Jim Memeti at last Monday night’s council meeting has sparked cries of racism from his colleagues. It came as Cr Peter Brown spoke to a motion about selling land in Springvale to Islamic school Minaret College. “I’m trying to explain why I’ve changed my mind and effectively Cr Memeti has called me a racist for doing so,” he said. But Cr Memeti was quick to defend his remarks. “I didn’t call Cr Brown a racist I said ‘all Anglos are voting against this decision’,” he said. Mayor Sean O’Reilly brushed off a call from Cr Brown to kick Cr Memeti out of the meeting. “I’d ask Cr Memeti not to address things on a racial basis,” he said. By Wednesday Cr Memeti was still standing by his comments. “I just said to some of my fellow councillors all the Anglo-Saxons are voting for this,” he said. He said the “multicultural councillors” had voted in favour of selling the land to Minaret and the Anglo-Saxons had not.

“I didn’t say they were racist or anything like that,” he said. Cr Memeti said he didn’t think his comments would create tensions. “What happens on the floor stays on the floor and we move on together for the betterment of our community,” he said. “It’s our responsibility to move on. “To me it’s all done and dusted.” Cr John Kelly said Cr Memeti was “not the sharpest tool in the shed with a comment like that”. “He called us Anglos. That is so racist,” he said. “I’m really upset. It was really terrible. It was about saving that bit of park down at Springvale. It’s a shame Jim has turned this into a racial issue.” Cr Matthew Kirwan said the five councillors who voted against the sale acted to preserve the land for all Springvale residents, whatever their ethnic backgrounds or faiths. “Having been at the forefront of efforts by council to assist asylum seekers and refugees, and a strong supporter of the Interfaith Network, I found that implication particularly offensive. “This is an open space decision, pure and simple,” he said. “It could have been Minaret College it could have been a state school, it could have been a Catholic school.”

Cr Peter Brown said he based his decision on feedback from the public. “They were from a variety of different ethnic groupings,” he said. “It wasn’t just blue-eyed blondes making submissions. “Jim might be happy to leave it all behind but he has to remember that mud does stick. “I think it will stick to him on this occasion." Cr Roz Blades said councillors would have to be professional and move on. “I have,” she said. “Everybody believed their argument was genuinely right. “Everyone was passionate. “People are feeling a bit bruised but we’ve got a city to run here.” Save Glendale Reserve spokesman Mark Dalton said the decision to abort the sale was great news “soured by the disgusting behaviour of Cr Memeti who pulled out his racism card again”. “That’s been the furthest thing from my mind all the way through,” he said. “We were invited to go to the college to have a look around. It is a very well-run school. “I’ve got nothing against the school. It’s the loss of the park that’s the problem.” Green Patch Saved, page 5.

Meters may cost election By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

SABA slams leaked emails dirty tricks Councillor Peter Brown, who has been singled out for his pro-meters stance, said the email suggested SABA had been in support of parking meters and that there had been proper consultation. “When the public find out that SABA has been behind these matters for quite some time, it will certainly discredit their campaign.” In the email, Mr Chang also suggested “sweeteners” by re-investing the revenue into new on-street parking spots in Springvale shopping precinct. The council has since promised to invest the meter’s expected $1 million annual revenue in central Springvale. On Thursday, Mr Chang said the leak was a “dirty tactic” by the council, which had acted “worse than an unscrupulous business operator”. “When I mentioned we

“Twelve months later, you will be able to walk up the street and there will be no-one there because you’ve destroyed it.” Cr O’Reilly told the Journal on Wednesday there had been “no substantive change” in his support for meters in recent months, describing them as increasingly a “fact of life” across

BANGHOLME is to have a $5 million cable water-ski centre in time for summer. City of Greater Dandenong councillors approved an application for the Melbourne Cable Park at 5 Riverend Road, adjacent to the National Watersports Centre (NWSC) on Patterson River on Monday night last week, 10 August. The Journal revealed plans for the park in February, reporting it could attract 90,000 people to Bangholme each year and was on track to open late this year. The company developing the

park, Activ, has leased a grassed area that the State Government declared surplus to its needs. There it will build lakes for water-skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. There’ll be two full lake systems with skate park-like obstacles and circular cable tracks to tow users and another two lakes will have what’s known as twotower systems, which take the user from one side of the lake to the other and are designed for beginners. The council initially received five objections to the proposal but these were later unconditionally withdrawn.

better utilised and in turn, more growth in business activity. The expected $1 million annual revenue is planned to be spent on central Springvale projects such as streetscaping Springvale Road or creating a walk-through from Springvale station to Balmoral Avenue. Cr Truong told the Monday meet-

formally and consulted local traders and no one indicates an objection, fair enough. “But in this case, I wouldn’t consider this proper consultation. “They try to cover themselves but it exposes the way they conduct themselves is far from desirable.”

ing he had fought for a pick-up and drop-off zone, knowing that most councillors supported the meters. Springvale Asian Business Association president Daniel Cheng said he was particularly disappointed that councillors Truong and O’Reilly voted for the meters. “They can’t see the damage it would cause in the area.”

An officers’ report said the site design respected the surrounding environment and amenity. “The proposed facility is envisaged to host local, national and international water sports events, providing a significant direct and indirect contribution to the local economy,” it said. Activ managing director Ian Clark said solar panels would power the cable systems, which each use as much electricity as two washing machines. Mr Clark said the park would average about 250 visitors per day, and the council has restricted numbers on the site to 370 at any one time.

SPRINGVALE Asian Business Association spokesman Stan Chang has lashed out at Greater Dandenong Council after a leaked email suggested his organisation was unopposed to on-street parking meters. The email sent by Mr Chang to council officers in late 2013 comprises “notes re our meeting” on a “confidential” draft parking management plan in Springvale. “SABA has written to council re its position on the proposal of introducing parking meters before in 2004, that we did not have strong objection to that as long as it is managed properly,” Mr Chang wrote. The email is in apparent conflict with SABA’s fierce opposition to the council’s plans to install parking meters this year, including threats to make it a 2016 council election issue.

1135155-ACM21-14

GREATER Dandenong councillors’ support for on-street parking meters in Springvale could cost them the “ethnic” vote, says councillor Youhorn Chea. Cr Chea’s third - and apparently final - formal attempt to prevent the installation of meters was defeated 6-4 at a council meeting on Monday 10 August. He told the Journal that he could do no more to stop the $1.20-an-hour meters being launched within weeks. Cr Chea predicted the issue would cost Springvale-based councillors Sean O’Reilly - who is also mayor - and Loi Truong their seats. “Perhaps the Vietnamese community need to get another representative to represent them much more than Loi. “And the English community finds someone who represents them much more than Sean O’Reilly.” Cr Chea said the issue will also loom large in Greater Dandenong’s other wards in next year’s elections, singling out other pro-meter councillors Peter Brown, Maria Sampey and John Kelly. On Monday, Cr Brown backed the meters after recently telling the Journal he would oppose them. “The people who come to Springvale shopping centre - the majority come from Cr Peter Brown’s ward and Dandenong as well,” Cr Chea said. “All the Cambodian community and Asian community go shopping in Springvale. “Some councillors are very marginal. If the ethnic community doesn’t support them, they’re gone.” Cr Roz Blades told the meeting the meters would drive shoppers out of ‘Sensational Springvale’.

You won’t catch Chunky Charlie on the hop By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS ANYONE could be forgiven for not knowing what is in a bunny chow. After all, Chunky Charlie’s could well be the only place in Australia to serve the South African traditional cuisine, said proprietor Raj Sewpersad. The first thing people ask is whether there’s rabbit in it. More likely, it’ll be a curry of either chicken, lamb, borlotti beans, also known as sugar beans, or lamb trotters – sealed inside a quarter-loaf of bread. The recipe was developed as a convenient transportable meal by Indian migrants, colloquially known as ‘bunyas’, in South Africa in the 19th century. Mr Sewpersad, who was born and raised in Durban, said the bunyas used

carved-out loaves of bread to carry their curries to work. “The idea caught on,” he said.

“There was no Tupperware or containers in those days. “You don’t need knives and forks to eat it. “Five or six people could just tear into it with their fingers.” Mr Sewpersad said he never ate the meal at home. “It was more of a take-away meal, like a McDonald’s burger.” After 10 years running a coffee-shop franchise Coffee ‘N All, Mr Sewpersad opened Chunky Charlie’s in Dandenong late last year. “I found the brand and concept of a coffee shop a bit stale, so I decided to bring in something unique.” Chunky Charlie’s is at Level 2, Dandenong Plaza, Dandenong.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 12 August 1915 The War Continuation of letter dated 16 June 1915 from Sergeant Harold Tullock. “We immediately started to dig in with our small trenching tools, and they proved their worth that afternoon. All the afternoon the enemy kept the shrapnel going on our ridge, but cooled off as night fell. As soon as darkness closed in we went back, a few at the time, and brought up our packs and the picks and shovels. With the aid of these the trench soon began to look different. At about 10pm, when the Turks made their first charge at us, we were pretty secure. They came on with cries of ‘Allah, Allah’ and we allowed them to advance to within about 40 yards of us, when we opened up on them.

They soon got tired of this and beat a hasty retreat, carrying as many of their dead and wounded with them as possible. They made several other attempts during the night but with also the same result. It was during the first charge that A Couve was hit. I was then the only NCO left in our platoon, and took charge till another officer was available. Next day I was appointed sergeant. About noon our platoon sergeant, who had receive shrapnel bullet in the leg the previous day, arrived back again. He had been taken aboard the boat and as they would not take the bullet out he got ashore next morning and came back. We held these trenches for a fortnight when we, the 2nd Brigade, were sent to Cape Helles.

Here we had a couple of days spell. We were then sent as reserves to the left; we had just completed digging our trenches when we received the order to advance and support the firing lines. Nobody understood exactly where the firing line was so we went straight ahead. We passed over some of our own troops entrenched, then on over the Indian troops in support, and finally over the firing line. To be continued...

Dandenong council last week decided to send the invitation to follow up its recent deputation, which was told of surveys being made. Cr Downard said he felt the Minister, Mr Meagher, had been fair with the deputation. “I got the idea he would leave nothing to chance, and any decision he makes will be the right one” said Cr Downard. The Mayor Cr M Jarvis said: “Cr Fotheringham’s motion means that we press on with getting the station.”

An Osborne Street resident said the residents had several concerns but were particularly worried. “The fact that this building will be virtually hanging over our heads make us feel very uncomfortable.” 5 years ago 16 August 2010 Noble Park toasts its community spirit with gala event A Gala dinner and community awards have been lined up to celebrate community spirit in Noble Park. Green patch saved By CASEY NEILL A SLICE of Springvale park land will stay in public hands – but won’t bolster open space shortfalls for another 10 years. City of Greater Dandenong councillors on Monday night last week decided not to sell 75A Whitworth Avenue – abutting Glendale Reserve – to Minaret College. Community group Save Glendale Reserve urged the council to keep the land, demolish the rundown kinder and create more open space. But Minaret has 10 years remaining on a lease of the site and kinder. Council officers recommended halting the sale, but Councillor Jim Memeti moved an alternative motion to proceed. Mayor Sean O’Reilly cast the deciding vote to defeat the motion after a five-votes-all split. Councillors then unanimously passed the recommendation to not

proceed with the sale. Cr Memeti said the kinder had been on the site for 50 or 60 years. “The purpose of selling this kindergarten to Minaret College is to build another kindergarten,” he said. He said more than 50 students attended the current kinder – eight who would attend schools outside Minaret – and a new one could accommodate more than 100. “The next kindergarten they can go to, they have to cross Springvale Road,” Cr Memeti said. “I don’t want any kids to miss out.” Cr Memeti disputed council figures that indicate a surplus of kindergarten spaces in the area. “I think our data is wrong,” he said. He said the municipality was growing so quickly that the council had a responsibility to ensure places were available at short notice. Cr Memeti said the Greens Party was responsible for most of the 161

submissions to council against the sale. “It was probably only about a dozen residents that submissions were from,” he said. But Greens South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Nina Springle said that was “clearly wrong”. “All we did was to create an online form so that residents could more easily make their views about the Glendale sale known to council,” she said. “The submissions were clearly made by concerned members of the community and Cr Memeti knows that.” Cr Peter Brown said he initially supported selling the land. “I’ve met on more than one occasion with Minaret and I understood and valued what they were trying to do for their students,” he said. “But to not sell it was in no way going to prevent a preschool from being constructed, because the college already has the land set aside for a preschool. “If council had de-

cided to sell them the land it would have been a bonus for the school.” “An overwhelming number of the members of the public do wish it to be retained for future generations,” he said. Cr Matthew Kirwan said: “I have found not one resident in Greater Dandenong - that is not associated with the applicant – that actually thinks selling this land is a good idea,” he said. Save Glendale Reserve member Brendan Nicholl said councillors should be commended for listening to residents. “The land was originally donated to the people of this area in the ’50s,” he said. “This is a significant win for retaining park across the shire and respects our need for secure green space. “All of the reserve could be turned to green space in the future. “Our suburbs are becoming denser and our need for green space will actually increase.”

Shisha lounge proposal goes up in smoke By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS GREATER Dandenong councillors have rejected a proposed shisha lounge in Lonsdale Street, declaring it could be illegal under the Tobacco Act. At a council meeting on 10 August, the proposed lounge and restaurant with a maximum of 50 patrons was refused on parking, amenity and legal grounds. The venue was planned

to be near a family martial arts gym, pool hall and slotcar racing centre at a retail area at 111-116 Lonsdale Street. In a motion, councillors declared the proposal could be illegal under a “judicial interpretation” of the Tobacco Act – an interpretation that could extend indoor-smoking bans to shisha lounges. Councillor Peter Brown said it could be argued that

shishas’ main ingredient was tobacco, even if it was less than 50 per cent of the product, because it “is what motivates consumption”. “Quite realistically, I doubt that any shisha lounge would commercially survive if there was no tobacco in the shisha pipe. “The absence of tobacco would make the pipe content unsaleable and thus the presence of tobacco in the

shisha is the significant element, not the quantum of tobacco. “It is this argument upon which I believe the Tobacco Act can and should be interpreted to disallow the establishment of shisha lounges.” Cr Brown said the council had standing to argue its case potentially in the Supreme Court – should the shisha applicant challenge the rejection.

Cr Matthew Kirwan has spoken out against shisha lounges as unregulated health risks, with no minimum age limits or controls on indoor smoking. “When a shisha lounge limits entry to over 18s, we’re only relying on goodwill on that. “If police or a council officer sees a 12-year-old in these venues, they can’t do anything.”

A NOBLE PARK ice addict with an intellectual disability has been jailed for 16 months over a month-long burglary binge - including an aggravated burglary in which he struck an elderly resident. Andrew Roccadavis, 24, who was using up to 3.5 grams of ice a day, had been seeking immediate release from 294 days in remand at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court today. The court heard that Roccadavis committed thefts and several burglaries, netting a laptop, hard-drive, Bluetooth stereo, handbag, jewellery and an electronic tablet in Glen Waverley on 22 October about 5.30pm. During one of the break-ins, a 64-year-old owner in his sixties discovered Roccadavis hiding in a walk-in wardrobe. Before fleeing, the accused dropped a pillow-case of items, and pushed and kneed the man’s leg, causing swelling and bruising. Roccadavis left outside the home a red bag containing 15 sets of house and car keys, a garage remote, house-breaking equipment and a full bottle of

vodka. In a police interview that night, he said he “blacked out“ and couldn’t say where he had been prior to his arrest. He later told police his memory was “hazy at best“ due to regular GHB and ice use. During a Cranbourne West home burglary in October, a 20-year-old female awoke to find Roccadavis in her bedroom. He fled, leaving behind a doona loaded with jewellery and personal belongings in the hallway. On 26 September, Roccadavis broke in and stole a tablet, laptop, mobile phone, camera, jewellery and cards including a Crown Casino membership card from an apartment in Close Avenue, Dandenong. He then gained access to the building’s security car park on several occasions over the next three weeks. On one occasion, he broke into a storage unit and stole several items, as well as smashing his way into a vehicle using a milk crate. In October, Roccadavis - a disqualified driver at the time drove a stolen vehicle during a

petrol drive-off at Noble Park, broke into and stole hard hats and high-visibility vests from a Springvale construction site, and stole toolkits from a Dandenong home garage. On 15 October, he told a Dandenong service station attendant he forgot his wallet and gave a false name, address and phone number after filling a stolen car with petrol. The offending occurred just one month into a 12-month community corrections order. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Roccadavis’s nine months in custody was not enough, even taking into account the accused’s disability. He warned the accused not to hurt people, saying it would have been “terrifying“ for the Glen Waverley victim to be confronted at home. Roccadavis was also sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order upon release from jail on 22 February. He was also ordered to pay more than $12,000 compensation to victims, to provide a DNA sample to police and disqualified from driving for 12 months from today.

POLICE have confirmed that the death of a woman in a unit fire in Dandenong last Tuesday night was not suspicious. The body of the woman in her fifties was found by fire-fighters who were called to the blaze in a rear unit in Sheales Street about 7.10pm. An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said another woman at the scene was taken to hospital. An elderly man, who lived in the next-door unit, said a woman and her daughter had lived there for at least five years. “I didn’t really know them. They were pretty quiet and kept to themselves.” He said he never heard any arguments nor had he seen anything suspicious at the neighbouring residence. Five fire trucks were called to the scene and had the blaze under control within five minutes, a CFA spokesman said. Police are preparing a report for the State Coroner.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT…

HAND Brake Turn in Dandenong has received a $10,000 boost from the Commonwealth Bank’s Community Grant program. Not-for-profit Concern Australia offers Certificate II in Auto Body Repair at the automotive training centre to guide people into employment. Commonwealth Bank's Harsh Modi, Danyelle Prout and Avnish Shah last Wednesday presented the cheque to Hand Brake Turn staff Rebecca Kats and Marc Clothier and Picture: ROB CAREW students Tamara, Harley and John. 142987

IT’S easy to laugh now, but there were sure to be some frowns when Journal staff organised for a helicopter to land in the vicinity of the newspaper’s offices many moons ago. They were off to the Melbourne Cup and were determined to get there in style. That was one of the revelations recalled by former staff at the Journal’s 150th anniversary bash last Monday night at the Dandenong

Club. It probably also seemed a good idea to mock up a version of a Charcoal Chicken store’s advert that read “Cooked Children”. Except when the ‘joke’ version with the advertiser’s name, address and phone number was printed in the paper. A BIG thank you to Myrna Fourkiotis of Noble Park North who sent the Journal a birthday card after receiving her copy of the paper’s special 150th edition last week. THERE’S a saying you should always change your underwear in case you’re in an accident. Maybe extend that to T-shirts – just in case you’re arrested and have to face court. Last Monday, the accused was escorted into the dock at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court fresh from his arrest. He stood respectfully for the magistrate, his Family Guy-themed T-shirt reading: “I’d love to stay and chat but you’re a total bitch.”

COUNCILLOR Peter Brown says he dropped his opposition to installing on-street parking meters in Springvale over a racism row at a council meeting on 10 August. “The decision I made on Monday (to support the meters) was probably the most political decision I’ve made on this council. “Quite frankly, I wasn’t going to support two councillors Memeti and Chea when they were calling me and my colleagues racist.” Nonetheless, despite the vote, Cr Brown told the Journal his preference remained for Springvale’s streets to be free of meters.

Always with you in spirit

We need room to breathe

Due to family reasons, I was unable to attend the function held in Dandenong last week for past and present staff of the Journal to celebrate the newspaper’s 150th anniversary. I know I, unfortunately, had to miss what I’m sure was a wonderful evening of camaraderie and enthusiastic recollections of many present and former staff members... but after perusing the special 150th anniversary issue I felt I had been there! Its incredible content really did do justice to the marvellous community of Dandenong, recalling for me fond, never-forgotten memories of literally hundreds of people who worked (and played!) long and hard - and no doubt still do - to make sure the Journal has maintained its position as the best and most influential community-oriented local newspaper one could wish for. My congratulations to present and past staff, Dandenong identities and the public who collectively ensured that the entire content of the 150th anniversary issue of the Journal would not only be savoured now, but also by future generations and historians. John Woods, Mount Martha.

IT IS pleasing to hear that council took the responsible decision to preserve open public space in Springvale. Recent reports again prove that exposure and access to the natural environment is vital for both the physical and mental wellbeing of people. With the current vested interest push for the acceptance of even more overpopulation in greater Melbourne, and the intrusion of greater proportions of high and medium density housing even in the greater Dandenong area, existing open spaces need to be kept. Over the past 20 years there has been considerable infilling and overbuilding in the metro area and development on a massive scale on thousands of hectares of what was once farmland, market gardens and public land at the fringes and well past Dandenong in what amounts to continuous urbanisation. There is a reasonable argument that many hectares of forested public space are needed near the boundaries of Dandenong. Daryl Budgeon, Noble Park North.

Ash Long: Congratulations to the Dandenong Journal, its staff and the Thomas family on the grand achievement of 150 years - and a splendid 84-page souvenir to mark the occasion. Well done to the entire Journal team.

A Springvale group has won its bid to stop the sale of park land ... but will have to wait at least 10 years to use it ...

Gaye Guest: Congratulations on this milestone edition of the Journal with fabulous local insight to the City of Greater Dandenong as it is now. I have noticed how your stories online are changing rapidly, almost daily, indicating the marvellous events and activities happening in our local municipality. Any possibility of the Journal being published twice a week in hard copy to cover all the news? The Journal had gone from strength to strength in recent years when I feared it might cease completely.

Mark Dalton: Why was the kinder leased for 25 years? I would just like all Lightwood Ward voters to know that both councillors Youhorn Chea and Loi Truong voted to sell public open space in your ward - please remember this when voting next time. Judith Spence: Just heard the news that Glendale Reserve is to be saved as open space for the residents of Springvale. Great news, many thanks to all the Councilors who voted for it and also to all involved in the rallies to save it! Shows what can happen using “people power”!

YOUR VOICE FOR 150 YEARS

DANDENONG JOURNAL

Wedding day saved By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IF IT wasn’t for the Dandenong Journal, Helena and Richard Green would be without a photo from their wedding day. Married in a “small no fuss” ceremony at St Gerard’s Catholic Church in Gladstone Road, Dandenong, the couple decided they couldn’t afford to buy the photos taken on their big day. They were unaware that the original pictures would soon be gone forever. “Somehow the proofs got damaged somewhere along the line and the photo printed in the Journal turned out to be the only one we had left. “The photographer didn’t even tell us he just put it in and then I was reading through it and I said to Richard ‘these people look familiar’ and I read the rest and, of course, it was us,” Helena said. But the miraculous find wouldn’t be Helena’s only connection to the Journal – she also managed to land a job with the newspaper. Helena worked in the Journal’s accounts department for six weeks in a replacement position. “I took calls and did the advertisements when the Journal was in Scott Street, Dandenong, and enjoyed my time there very much,” she said. Helena tied the knot when she was 19 years old and said her marriage had been long and happy. “Richard was 21 years old when we married and we’ve been together 47 years,” she said.

Helena and Richard, who suffered a brain aneurism and stroke 21 years ago, with their one and only Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS wedding photo. 139222 In those years the couple have brought up four children and now have seven grandchildren. They said they have learned how to juggle their day-to-day lives over the years. “Being that busy means you’ve just got to get on with what needs to be done,” she said. Helena’s advice for a long

happy marriage is “separate rooms”. “Richard stays in the lounge room all day and I stay in the kitchen. I think people do need their space,” she said. The pair met in Nicole Avenue in Dandenong North and have lived in Dandenong most of their lives. “I was 17 years old when we met and Richard was 19 years old. We

became good friends and within two years we were married,” she said. Helena had moved into the new estate across the road from her soonto-be husband and she said they have been reading the Journal ever since. “We always read the Journal cover to cover, it’s more important than reading the Herald Sun as far as we’re concerned,” she said.

IT’S a once-in-150-years, special record of the times. Disability-rights advocate Sharon Harris last week presented a 1.5 metre laminated banner to the Journal, congratulating the publication on its 150-year milestone. She travelled the length and breadth of Greater Dandenong for two weeks, collecting about 80 messages from police, council chief executives, sports groups, a historical society, welfare organisations, places of worship, RSLs and businesses. It included signatures of current and former Journal staff – dating back to the 1960s – collected at the launch of the newspaper’s commemorative edition at the Dandenong Club on Monday. Ms Harris said the gesture was about “paying it forward”. “The Journal has been a voice and a heart of our city. “It’s a pleasure to give back because the Journal has been supporting people for so long.”

TAX TIME

This year’s returns get off to a flying start we’ve put a lot of work into refining our myTax product and ensuring it makes it as quick and easy for people to lodge a tax return,” Mr Whyte said. “This year’s myTax product is even more personalised and streamlined, and it’s pleasing to see so many people getting their tax done in a fraction of the time of previous years. “We expect to reach 1 million myTax lodgments in a few weeks which will be an outstanding result in what is actually the 100th year of the tax return in Australia.” Mr Whyte said he expected the strong lodgment figures to continue,

particularly with more information becoming available through pre-filling. “The vast bulk of the pre-fill information we use has now been supplied to us, so if you haven’t lodged already, you’ll probably find most of your myTax return has been completed for you. “This includes things like salary and wage info, bank interest, private health insurance, spouse details and other government payments. “All you need to do is check the data, add in your deductions and you’re done.” Feedback from the ATO’s exit survey has also been positive, with many

people pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to lodge a tax return using myTax. “This has been the easiest tax return I’ve ever filled out,” one taxpayer reported, while another said “good work improving online submission of tax. It is much easier. A breeze. Thank you.” The ATO’s longer-form electronic system e-tax, now in its final year, has received more than 400,000 returns, a significant decrease from last year’s figures as more taxpayers move to the quicker and easier myTax option. Overall electronic lodgments are up 6 per cent from the same time last year,

WITH the first month of tax time gone the ATO is reporting a significant increase in the number of electronic lodgements as an expanded suite of online services strike a chord with taxpayers. Now in its second year, the streamlined online tax return myTax has received almost 800,000 lodgments, more than double the amount lodged at the same time last year. Assistant Commissioner Graham Whyte said it was pleasing to see so many taxpayers using myTax to lodge their returns. “After a successful launch last year

with almost 3.2 million returns already received via myTax, e-tax or through a tax agent. The number of self-lodgers has also increased, with almost 20 per cent more people completing their own tax return compared with last year. There were 775,704 current year returns received through myTax by July, 406,495 current year returns received through e-tax, 3,218,131 total electronic lodgments received through myTax, e-tax or through a tax agent, 1,854,224 refunds have been issued, totalling $4,803m, 14,672,634 visits to the ATO website and more than 1,000,000 calls received through call centres.

NEW HOMES & LAND

BERWICK WATERS’ BOUNTY OF BLOCKS Berwick Waters, the signature masterplanned community by Australand and Mondous Property Australia, continues its success with the recent auction of five prestigious land lots in The Strand precinct. These sales take the total number of blocks sold at Berwick Waters to more than 400. During the final weekend in July, 15 families, some of whom had been unsuccessful in previous attempts to secure the block of their choice, competed for an opportunity to make their dream come true. The five large sized, waterfacing blocks were the last of the blocks featuring water views in this current stage. This prized section of the development, with land lots ranging in size from 476 to 544 square metres, attracted auction bids from $335,000 to $415,000 demonstrating the value placed on securing land in this prestigious estate. Homes at Berwick Waters are set among 52 hectares of magical wetlands with about four kilometres of water and greenery when fully constructed, complete with nine kilometres of walking and bike trails, fitness stations and picturesque viewing platforms over the wetlands. Berwick Waters makes for inspirational living in an enviable location in the City of Casey. Jill Lim, Australand’s Development Director, is proud of the evolution at this landmark estate. “Berwick Waters is a flagship development and, as such, Australand and Mondous Property Australia are especially delighted that the estate still attracts tremendous interest from families keen to secure a block of land on which to build their dream home.

group

NAVOD WICKRAMASINGHE AND HIS FAMILY WITH THEIR PROUD PURCHASE. “The Strand is a particularly exciting precinct and brings with it a stunning vista of water views and lush surrounds perfect for bringing up a young family or even for empty nesters looking for ideal living options that suit their interests and needs,” said Ms Lim. With a vast display village featuring many of Victoria’s top builders, Berwick Waters enables these newest landowners the chance to view the latest offerings in home design and floorplans so they may start their new homebuilding adventure almost from day one. Australand’s General Manager, Residential, Anthony Boyd said that upon completion between 2500 and 3000 families will live at Berwick Waters enabling a new community to thrive in this scenic part of Casey. “Berwick Waters is about providing homes, community and future employment opportunities to a broad demographic, encompassing young families, first-home buyers and retirees, all within a stunning natural setting." Berwick Waters is located at 5 Riverstone Boulevard, Clyde North. For further information, contact Australand on 13 38 38.

Riding the world wave By CASEY NEILL CANDY Bowers is making waves on the world stage but still calls Dandenong home. Circus Oz head-hunted the performer to MC its latest show But Wait... There’s More!, which will hit the Drum Theatre stage this week and features original music and skits. “It will remind you of all the great things about circus,” Candy said. “It’s a really Aussie circus, too, so it’s funny.” Her parents moved to Australia from South Africa and she was born at Dandenong Hospital in 1979. “I love that I’m an international artist that was born in Dandenong,” she said. “I have beautiful memories of my street in Burchall Grove, growing up. “It was a really mixed neighbourhood another South African family at the end of the street, our Dutch neighbours with immaculate gardens, Italians, Greeks, Aussies all mixed in. “We’d always be putting on plays - the whole street, all the kids. “I went to Seena Bird Dance Academy which was in the Uniting Church. “A lot of my notes say ‘work on the technique, excellent smile, very enthusiastic’.” Candy moved to New South Wales at age 10 because Victoria didn’t recognise her mum’s primary school teacher qualifications from South Africa. The family settled in Campbelltown which she said was similar to Dandenong in a lot of ways. “Small towns, suburban towns, socioeconomically disadvantaged - all that kind of stuff,” Candy said. “I think it’s cool that kids can go ‘anything’s possible’. You could end up travelling the world and being a performer.” Candy has hosted multicultural cel-

ebration the Emerge Festival at the Drum and opened Harmony Square in April last year. “There’s a real acknowledgement in the diverse cultures here,” she said. “When I turn on the TV I think ‘what’s this Australia? This isn’t the one I grew up in’. “So when I get back to Dandy I think ‘we should make more art here, we should make TV shows here’. “It was very cool to see how connected the communities were and how supported they were by places like the Drum and the library and the council.” Candy studied acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) in Sydney. “One of the first things I created was an act called Sista She and it was a hip hop comedy act,” she said.

“We did a six minute bit at a friend’s cabaret. “We got picked up to write a fulllength show for the Sydney Opera House. That was our first big break. “It was just pre-YouTube and Facebook and all that so I often wonder how well we would do if that stuff was going on as well.” Radio station Triple J picked up and promoted the act’s music. “It was very unusual - two girls, comics and also having fun with Aussie hip hop,” she said. “After that I went on to write a couple of solo works that I toured around the country with and just recently went to South Africa as well.” She’s also performed in the UK and America and written comedy for television.

After Circus Oz, Candy will be producing a soul and hip hop version of Shakespeare’s comedy Twelfth Night and heading back to South Africa for another tour. “I’ve got a couple of works that I’ll hopefully get around Australia and the world for teenagers,” she said. “There’s also a little duo web series I’m working on out of LA with a comic from there. “Sometimes I have to catch myself! But it’s good.” Circus Oz: But Wait ... There’s More! will hit the Drum Theatre, corner Lonsdale and Walker streets, Dandenong, at 8pm on Friday 21 August and 2pm and 8pm on Saturday 22 August. Tickets are priced from $45. Visit www.drumtheatre.com.au to book.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

First in best dressed for combat protection By CASEY NEILL A PARTNERSHIP spanning Berwick, Dandenong South and the US is helping to keep Australian soldiers safe. Defence Minister Kevin Andrews and La Trobe MP Jason Wood visited Aquaterro in Dandenong South on 30 July. With Australian Precision Technologies (APT) in Berwick, Aquaterro is producing new lines for the Australia Defence Force. CEO Graeme Bulte said the company started in the commercial marine industry in Tasmania, looking for a better way to protect people whose jobs took them into harm’s way. Today it’s a leading law enforcement and defence equipment supplier and is joining with US-based Wilcox Industries, which manufactures tactical equipment and has set up a new

$10 million plant across the road from Aquaterro. Wilcox CEO Jim Teetzel said Aquaterro had distributed Wilcox products for the past seven years. “Basically we’ve been very conscientious as a company not to reach out into a new area - especially on the opposite side of the world - without having the support of someone else who has a lot of trust and integrity,” he said. “Working with Graeme the last seven years we’ve developed a good relationship of trust. “Because of that we started talking about being able to manufacture our products here in Australia. “We’re going to start putting equipment in, making high-tech jobs, and start manufacturing the products that will not only be consumed here in Australia but also in this region.”

Our Walsh to show Premier her talents

A DANDENONG industry leader is on a new Premier’s panel of the state’s best business brains. Actco-Pickering Metal Industries partner Jill Walsh and the other 11 Premier’s Jobs and Investment Panel members met for the first time on Monday, 3 August. She is the only representative from the south east, which she described as the centre of manufacturing in Australia. “I felt an enormous sense of privilege,” she said.

“You meet amazing people and they reinvigorate you to continue your passion.” Ms Walsh also recently joined the Southern Melbourne Regional Development Australia (RDA) committee, is a Committee for Dandenong member and is on the South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) board. She said infrastructure improvements, local content and social cohesion were her top talking points for the panel.

“Jobs bring self-respect and build a sense of community in a region,” she said. A $508 million Premier’s Jobs and Investment Fund will support the panel to provide strategic advice to the Premier on driving economic growth and creating high-skill, high-wage jobs. “The premier was sending a message that this was his panel, he was going to resource it, he was going to set it up to achieve,” Ms Walsh said.

The panel will meet again at the end of the month and then quarterly. Mr Andrews said the government believed in using industry leaders’ voices and their vision to drive economic growth and create jobs. “This panel draws on some of our brightest business minds to create high-skill, high-wage jobs as well as provide us with high-level, strategic advice on where to invest to make Victoria stronger and more prosperous,” he said.

Adam Eckersley in action.

SINCE its official debut at the 2013 Tamworth Country Music Festival, the Adam Eckersley Band has had a steep rise in popularity. Now there is a chance to see what the fuss is all about at the Hallam Hotel next month. To hear Adam Eckersley Band crunching through nimble rockers, fiddle-led stompers, reflective acoustic tunes and blistering country-rock, music lovers are reminded of the broad church that is known as country today. The musicianship, coupled with the gravelly emotive Eck-

ersley vocals, shows why AEB is setting fire to the pews. Having just won the 2015 Golden Guitar Award in January for New Artist of the Year, Eckersley also picked up a prestigious APRA Award for Country Work of the Year for his hit single Give Her the World. The band has also been chosen for Commercial Radio Australia’s coveted spot on the 2015 Global Artist Showcase for CMA Music Festival in Nashville in June. It seems industry and fans alike have come together in their mutual acclaim for Ecker-

sley whose roots are, of course, impeccable. He writes what ZZ Top might call “beer-drinking, hell-raising,” great music – learned from many years of constantly touring both the US and Australia. The indisputable truth is that Eckersley and his heavily bearded band of cohorts play and say what comes from their hearts and souls as long as there’s juice in the van and strings on the guitars. Tickets are on sale for the show on Thursday 24 September at the Hallam Hotel, Princes Highway, Hallam. Phone 8786 0200.

Attacked dad pleas for son By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AN ELDERLY Springvale man has made an impassioned plea in court on behalf of his alcoholic son who had throttled and bashed him at home. The father, 75, argued against the magistrate imposing a full intervention order barring contact at a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing on Monday 10 August. The father told the court that his 45-year-old son was of a “similar ilk to me” – both sharing alcohol problems “as has my father before me”. He forgave his son, describing him as a “great support” through his own alcoholism. “He has no other accommodation. “What I’d like to see is for him to get back with me and get on a program of absolute sobriety. “He’s of an absolute help to me in that regard.”

On Monday, the son pleaded guilty to the assaults and breaching an intervention order preventing him from being drunk at the father’s house. He had also breached a community corrections order imposed in June for drunkenly beating his dad. The court was told that the son arrived drunk and verbally abusive at the victim’s home about 4.30pm on 2 August. In the kitchen, the son grabbed and pressed his fingers against his father’s windpipe, making it difficult for him to breathe. He then punched the father several times, causing bruising and bleeding to his forearm and ear. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Liz Millear said the “shaken” victim told police “he wanted to kill me. He wanted to cut my throat”. The son’s lawyer said the

most recent assault was an “isolated incident” after the son had made “positive steps” in the past three months, including abstinence from alcohol. He said the son had been distressed by the eight days spent remanded in Dandenong police cells – his first time in custody. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen sentenced the son to eight days’ jail - deemed as already served in police remand cells since the incident. He also imposed a familyviolence intervention order barring the accused from visiting his father, but allowing phone and text conversations. Grabbing a victim by the throat was a “red flag” indicating there was a risk of the victim later being seriously injured or killed, Mr Vandersteen said. “It may be in time that the order can be varied but that’s only predicated on you being alcohol-free.”

Scouting for navy cadets By CASEY NEILL SUB-LIEUTENANT Matthew Hine has gone from navy cadet to commanding officer. The Hampton Park 26-year-old is encouraging kids from Casey and Greater Dandenong to follow in his footsteps. Sub-Lt Hine is the Commanding Officer (CO) for the Training Ship (TS) Bataan Australian Navy Cadets (ANC) unit, based at the Monash Barracks in Dandenong. “We moved here last year in October,” he said. “We wanted to focus on the kids that were here first, so it was a solid group before we moved on. “We’re at a stage where we’re ready to recruit again. “Army cadets recruit heavily in Greater Dandenong, so we’re hoping to focus on Casey.” “We’ve got kids from as far away as Pakenham. I’ve got another girl from Mordialloc way.” Sub-Lt Hine said cadets learnt rope work, defence force ranks, leadership and unit structure.

“When we go on camp, we’ve done dragon boating, we’ve done sailing,” he said. “Power boats is something we focus on, and we’re very lucky that we get pretty good access to HMAS Cerberus for camps.” He started his 12 years with the ANC as a Hampton Park Secondary College student. “I was the training officer for a while and then my CO retired last year and I took over,” he said. “I’ve hit it young. “We opened it up to tender, and other staff in the ANC applied for it. “They’re older than me and much more experienced in other ways, but I’ve owned businesses and my management and leadership was what this unit needed to get it into a community stage.” TS Bataan had been at the school for 15 years and received government funding. “Now we’ve got to fund ourselves and seek out our own connections,” he said. Sub-Lt Hine has about 20 cadets, who march under a new banner provided by the National Servicemen’s Asso-

ciation of Australia’s (NSAA) south-east sub-branch. “The banner gives us the ability to parade and be identified as TS Bataan not just navy cadets, or sometimes the public perceive us as Navy recruits,” he said. He said many cadets had social engagement difficulties. “Not everyone in this community wants to do sport, but they want to have an extracurricular activity that’s engaging and exciting,” he said. “More than anything, they get a lot of friendship out of here.” Sub-Lt Hine would love to see them go into the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). “But at the end of the day, it’s youth development, so that they are better prepared for their careers,” he said. “We give them those skills to go out and be socially engaging and active.” Cadets can enrol from the year they turn 13 and are discharged at age 20. A Battle on AFL’s hands By JARROD POTTER TAKING his football to the peak of the junior ranks, Dandenong Stingray Josh Battle has worked his way into an illustrious 2016 draftprospect program. Battle, 16, from Berwick has split his time between the Dandenong Stingrays, Haileybury College and Doveton Football Club this year and will soon add another side to an already jam-packed schedule - the AFL Academy. It makes for a power-packed 2016 as the 190cm (and growing) forward prospect has impressed throughout his time in the junior system. When Josh found out he was set to head to America for a high-performance training camp later this year, it proved a satisfying end to a turbulent 2014 performance. “It was pretty good Henry (Paul Henriksen) the Vic Country coach called me and said congratulations you’re part of the AFL Academy - I was pretty stoked,” Battle said. “I wasn’t part of the academy this year as in the Vic Country game last year I did my hamstring in the last game, so it was good to get in there… Blacky (Craig Black) told me I was close and just had to keep working hard.” He’s learning off the best at Haileybury, with Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd helping him assert his forward line presence and kick truly in

front of goals, while the TAC Cup system also hones his skills as a prime target in the Dandenong forward-50. Given the plethora of achievements so far with Vic Country and AFL Academy selections Battle looks back fondly on his local performance, his senior debut for Doveton this year playing for the same club as his father and brother. “Playing for Doveton obviously because that’s where my dad - Tony Battle - grew up and played… so that was pretty good,” Battle said. “I was a bit shattered I didn’t get to play with my brother Nick, but he broke his hand so what can you do?” Battle isn’t just an elite junior football prospect though, with cricket also keen to get him into the state ranks, but he went with his gut and chose the life chasing the red leather rather than bowling or batting against it. “Getting invited to try out with Cricket Victoria - I didn’t really go because as soon as I found out I had made the academy then I was going to give cricket away,” Battle said. “I always loved footy, but when I started going well at cricket it was a pretty hard decision - cricket was opening up - but then I just sat down with my dad and he said “do what you really love” and I chose footy.” Myles Poholke has also been selected for the Academy in the Level Two squad while under-

Josh Battle will take his football to the next level with selection in the 2016 AFL Academy program. 138869 Picture: JARROD POTTER age Stingrays Aaron Darling, Hunter Clark, Luke Davies-Uniacke and Oscar Clavarino were picked for the Level One squad. Dandenong Stingrays’ coach Craig Black thought Battle AFL Academy selection showed just how capable he is as a footballer and how valuable it is to have him slot back into the TAC Cup side approaching finals. “I think Josh’s games when he’s played for us this year - only played about four or five games this year - every game he’s played he put his best foot forward,” Black said. “Great hands, kicks it well and we’re excited to have him back in our side.

“It’s great reward for these guys that work hard to get to go to the AFL Academy.” Battle wanted to thank his family for their support in his football ambitions. Battle and Poholke are on Stingrays duties at the moment as the side heads towards finals and he hopes the side can keep pushing towards the apex of junior football - the TAC Cup grand final. “Hopefully just finish the year off well,” Battle said. “Just want to play a good brand of footy and come finals… hopefully if we work tighter as a team the rest will take care of itself and we’ll get to play off in a grand final.

Young Kiwi a big flyer By JARROD POTTER IT’S one thing to rise through the junior football ranks en route to the TAC Cup. That’s a predictable path that the best talent will inevitably tread - the way Victorian football pathways are currently structured. But to only have just arrived in Australia late last year and immediately take to his newly adopted country’s national code makes the efforts of Noble Park footballer Manaia Grant even more remarkable. Packing his bags and leaving Wellington, New Zealand in 2014, Grant also packed away his Rugby league and union gear as the 15-year-old decided to give the local code a run. “I just started to give AFL a go… gave Rugby and Rugby league a rest,” Grant said. After starting in a few clashes in the South East Juniors under-15 competition, the Noble Park powerhouse was hand-picked by a Sandringham Dragons’ TAC Cup recruiter to enter their development pathway... an amazing achievement for someone who is only 17 games into their Australian football journey. Being in the pathway doesn’t guarantee him a place in the Dragons’ team in years to come, but is indicative of his endurance, skill-set and most importantly - the raw potential that could see him become a TAC Cup footballer. Grant, who lives with his aunt and uncle in Noble Park, was shocked to get that initial callup to the Dragons’ development ranks as he’s still so fresh to Australian rules. I was pretty surprised when I got into the Dragons ’cos I’ve never played AFL before,” Grant said. “Just for the first season - they (Sandringham) saw me play one of my games and gave me a go. “Makes me feel pretty good… that I’m already at this level.” The rangy back pocket/wingman wants to make the most of his opportunity in the TAC Cup development ranks, especially with Under-16 duties the start, in many ways, of the rise towards elite senior football. “I’m starting to get used to the running for

Less than a year into his football career, Noble Park’s Manaia Grant has already been scouted to join the Sandringham Dragons’ development squad. 141954 Picture: JARROD POTTER AFL,” Grant said. “Even though there’s a lot of it - but I’ve been training my stamina for AFL and I also really like tackling.” “I’m just going to focus on footy at the moment - I just want to make sure that I can take my footy seriously… I want it to take me to where the professionals play and be on TV and that.” In joining the list of New Zealand-born footballers to have ventured over and given the TAC Cup a run. Grant can look up to current Hawthorn rookies Kurt Heatherley - who also played for Sandringham - and former Western Jet Shem Tatupu for blazing the path before him. Granted wanted to thank his parents, aunty and uncle for helping him get to where he wants to be and In2Fitness Health Club for its support.

SLOGGING uphill for the last time in 2015, Dandenong Little Athletics Centre (DLAC) bid farewell to another highcalibre season. At the Little Athletics Victoria Cross Country state championships, held at the end of July, the under-15 boys’ relay side made it two-for-two in recent campaigns as Lochlan Taylor, Luke Scott and Mitchell Kawli earned a team’s gold medal for the centre. Representing Doveton/ Endeavour Hills and Narre Warren Little Athletics Clubs, the trio stormed home in a combined time of 34.24 minutes to win the team relay as Taylor (10.28), finished third overall with Scott (11.52) and Khawli (12.03) also posting strong times for the cumulative victory.

Rounding out the success at the meet, young endurance runner Bradley Hall just missed a top-20 finish in the under-14 boys’ 3000 metre run, clocking in at 13.15 minutes. DLAC president Steve Fenton was proud to see the junior cross country runners excel at the top level at the conclusion of yet another strong season. “Second year in a row for the under-15 boys and they cleaned up again,” Fenton said. “It’s fantastic for them and good for the centre as well.” Fenton said it was an extraordinary year - both track and cross country - for the centre which continues to get scores of runners through the doors at Robert Booth Reserve. “It’s been a fantastic season - we’ve had Casey and Cranbourne join us this season, due to Casey’s track being refur-

bished - but we’ve always had a close connection with Casey as they used to be a club at our centre called Berwick. “Our idea for Dandenong LAC is participation and just everyone having a good time… everyone doing their best and having fun as they do it.” “We’ve had fantastic numbers and our families have always given us great support as well which is always appreciated.” The club wanted to make special mention of Scott de Jong for his tireless work as cross-country coordinator this season. With summer athletics only around the corner, starting up in the first weekend of October, for more information on the Dandenong Little Athletics Centre visit the website dandenong@lavic.com.au or contact via 9794 6502.

SPORT TAC CUP - Round 16

Stingrays straight and true By JARROD POTTER WHAT should have been an impressive battle between two high-flying TAC Cup sides turned into yet another scoreline that should worry anyone that faces Dandenong. Even with first choice names father-son pair Bailey Rice and Jake Lovett - both testing their mettle in the VFL, the Stingrays’ line-up continued to grow stronger with the reintroduction of its schoolboys’ players. Throwing in two All Australians down back and a 2016 AFL Academy candidate into the forward mix, the Stingrays found yet another gear in its pursuit of an inaugural TAC Cup premiership. Putting behind them the goal-kicking hoodoo that plagued its 2015 campaign, Dandenong went on to display an emphatic 15.6 (96) to 7.12 (54) goal kicking clinic. It was not just one player to stand up and shine in the forward arc though as Josh Battle (3 goals) combined with tall tandem Harry Prior and Travis Young (2 goals apiece) as adeptly as the ground-running goal-sneaks Shannon Gladman and Zak Roscoe. Dandenong did however have to work to shake off Oakleigh - the first term lay in the balance before a Stingrays’ barrage took hold. Gladman split his best work between winning aerial and terrestrial contested possession as the margin started to balloon. Dandenong’s chase-down tackling pressure had Oakleigh questioning every possession with the likes of Battle, Brandon White and Mitch Cox sinking their claws into anyone who tried to stroll past. It led to a 49-point buffer by the end of the third term and threatened to completely show up Oakleigh and the

Gach Nyuon flew all day in the ruck as Dandenong monstered Oakleigh in all facets of a 42-point win. 143142 finals double-chance it was working hard to maintain. The Chargers held court through the final term and put away some of the issues that cost them dearly through the first three stanzas, but the damage was already done. A Battle free kick and ensuing 50-metre penalty allowed the Haileybury/Doveton prospect to slot the final goal and help the Stingrays push their winning streak out to five on the trot. “Really happy with that - Oakleigh has been a really good footy team most years and seem to beat us,” Dandenong coach Craig Black said. “The first quarter was scrubby both teams were putting on a lot of pressure - but we settled well in the

Three very dull scripts By JARROD POTTER OUR contenders didn’t fare well on Saturday as Noble Park, Keysborough and St John’s were all beaten in first versus second battles. Similarities between the three games were uncanny - all Dandenongbased sides were in second place and had lost their earlier battles this year with the higher ranked side. From there the top dogs flexed their muscles and showed our lads who really held the crown in EFL Division 1, SFL Division 2 and VAFA Division 2 to leave us questioning the originality of the scriptwriters in local football.

SFL DIVISION 2 - Round 17 DESPITE the best efforts of Davor Rajic and Matt Collett (2 goals apiece) the Burra was outclass by the visiting Oakleigh District lads in a mighty display of top-of-the-ladder ascendancy. Will Gayfer’s defensive efforts were a class above alongside Shaun Dekkers, Shane Dunn and Leigh Williams. Keysborough now face Heatherton away on Saturday 22 August to round out the home-and-away season. In other results, Doveton Eagles (54) was all but given the Division-2 wooden spoon with a 42-point loss to Hampton (96) while Springvale Districts (110) was thumped by Skye (24).

SFL DIVISION 3 - Round 18 ENDEAVOUR Hills’ (68) finals chances came to a halt with a 15-point loss to Black Rock (83), Sandown (94) knocked over Dandenong (59) in the local derby and Lyndale (69) was bested easily by Carrum Patterson Lakes (142).

EFL DIVISION 1 - Round 17 NOBLE Park came out all guns blazing - managing to fight its way around an injury-depleted roster - and had scores virtually level against Balwyn at the first break, but from there the Tigers started to pounce. Woeful kicking from Balwyn kept Noble Park in it, but it was never meant to be the Bulls’ day with a 8.15 (63) to 13.25 (103) outcome left on the table. Dan Keely and Ziggie Alwan (2 goals apiece) were solid up forward while Vergim Faik continued his solid run of form in tandem with Sam Monaghan, Dylan Collis and Tim Kelly. Noble Park will face Lilydale in its last regular season clash before setting its sights on finals.

VAFA DIVISION 2 - Round 17 BELTED out of the contest, by conceding seven goals in the first term, St John’s was left to lick its wounds as Ivanhoe AFC continued its rampage in VAFA Division 2. Beaten 13.14 (92) to 20.15 (135), despite a good chase towards the end of the clash the JOCs efforts were grossly ineffective against the mighty Magpies. Goal end champions Aaron Thornton and Tim Edwards (4 goals each) were impressive while Manny Jakwot, Carson Strobel and Jarrod Gaget held their own. The second ranked St John’s will now face Elsternwick at home Saturday 22 August.

VAFA DIVISION 4 - Round 17 MASALA was badly beaten 7.14 (56) to 29.24 (198) against Parkside. The Tigers’ last match of the year is away at South Mornington on Saturday 22 August.

second and third and our pressure allowed us to absorb theirs and resulted in us getting a bit cleaner footy.” Black was impressed with returning forward Battle and thought across the board the forward group’s tenacity put the Stingrays at an amazing advantage. “Josh kicked three goals, but as a coaching group we’re just as excited to see that chase-down tackle that allowed one of those goals and the forward pressure was just as good,” Black said. Dandenong’s victory helps maintains its second place in the competition - still hunting down North Ballarat who has a one match break - but guarantees the Shepley Oval boys get the double chance. “We think we’ve got a really strong

Brandon White continued his stellar TAC Cup form with another elite Pictures: JARROD POTTER effort from the back line. 143142 list this year and because people are fighting for positions, everyone is hungry,” Black said. “Even if we’re up by two or three goals people are hungry for their spot - it’s not just about kicking goals, but playing their role and if they keep doing that it makes it tough for us at selection.” The first quarter was marred by TAC Cup debutant Stingray Reece Piper being rushed to hospital with suspected back fractures, after he accidentally slammed head-first into the boundary-line fence. The Rays head out to Burbank Oval on Sunday morning 23 August to face the Western Jets in its second last TAC Cup home-and-away clash of 2015.

A spicy mix for television By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Masala Football Club isn’t named so by coincidence. Masala, by definition, is a mixture of different spices and this unique footy club from Noble Park is exactly that. Established in 2013 out of Team India, which competed in the international series, the club is built on bringing new players to Aussie Rules footy and giving them a sense of belonging to a sporting community. Their task was recently given a huge boost with the Nine Network’s AFL Footy Show, through its Nissan Navara Tough Love competition, visiting the Masala Tigers’ WJ Turner Reserve home base in Noble Park North to give it a $10,000 facelift. “We’re here in Noble Park at the Masala Football Club - Australia’s first multicultural football team,” said Footy Show host and former Melbourne skipper Garry Lyon as part of the televised segment on the program last Thursday. “They’re only a young side they’ve been in existence three years and never had their own change rooms or facilities... we’re about to change all that.” Lyon congratulated Tigers’ president Matt Jacobs for his role in the start-up club. Jacobs then explained some of the club’s background during the segment. “The guys from the club, they formed it from the Indian international series,” he said. “They found it hard when they joined football clubs - they’re in the

rated from the public by a tarpaulin. “This is amazing… I’m speechless, and the boys will tell you that’s hard to do,” said Jacobs. “I want to thank the Nissan Navara Tough Love team. “They’ve been fantastic and the work they’ve done here is amazing. “Of course Channel Nine and the Footy Show, too… to have a competition like this, it’s great that you guys can do this for footy clubs around Australia.”

They have a dream By JARROD POTTER BIG V DIVISION 2 MEN - Preliminary Final ONE team, one dream. This unifying catch-cry of all Keysborough Cougars fans, coaches and players showcased the combined effort needed to finally overrun long-time BIG V rivals Craigieburn 68-60. From all parts of the roster Cougars’ coach Nathan Vogt had to find options in the preliminary final match-up on Saturday night. In a deafening room, where Craigieburn and Keysborough fans alike tried to out-holler each other, you could still hear the gears ticking over in Vogt’s head as he searched for the winning match-ups. Vogt went five-in, five-out to match the Eagles’ speed. Pushed Robert Ostojic and Ben Morwood in to defend foul shots and in-bounds. Put the long-shots in Steve Haddrell and Aaron Stirton’s hands. Gave hard defensive tasks to Jamie Le Clerc and Jamal Talo while having the play-call. Utilised the dogged defending of Allen Brusting while giving the keys to the kingdom for Andrew Lowe to shoot - especially after he nailed five points in a minute to put Craigieburn on the back foot. Minute to minute Vogt threw everything the Cougars’ had at Craigieburn - and especially its star swingman Jonathan Maybank (18 points, 8 rebounds). While Keysborough’s champions Malcolm Heard (12 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks) and Dave Smith (17 points, 8 rebounds) were sensational especially Smith’s role negating Maybank defensively - it’s hard to pick out any Cougar who didn’t step up and flourish under immense pressure. It was deadlocked through the first half - 28 a piece heading into the locker rooms as neither side extended the other up to half-time. The elastic only snapped in the last five minutes of the match as Keysborough reclaimed a 56-55 lead through an amazing Heard block, setting up Smith who nailed the ensuring foul shots.

Dave Smith monsters the ball away from a Craigieburn Picture: JARROD POTTER opponent. 143146 Clutch rebounds and tip-ins from Heard and Ostojic started to put the gap beyond Craigieburn’s capabilities before Ostojic reeled in a rebound off a missed free throw, was fouled himself, then nailed the matchwinners from the line. “That was always the plan,” Vogt said. “As we set out to do we really worked them (Craigieburn), worked them and worked them and I thought in the last five minutes there was nothing left that they could give us. “It’s pretty decisive that we blew them out… with five minutes left there wasn’t much in it at 54-53. “At the end of the day we did the hard work early and got to where we needed to be.” The only sour note in the Cougars’ victory lies within its three-point shooting - a mediocre six-of-37 from long range that will need to be rectified heading into the last campaign of 2015. The Cougars now resume hostilities with Western Port in the BIG V grand final series, starting this Saturday at Springers Leisure Centre and Vogt believes a complete effort from his charges will give the Steelers many headaches. “Challenge is definitely what it is, but I’m more than

confident we can get them (Western Port),” Vogt said. “We beat them last time we played at Springers albeit the first five minutes last week, we won the remaining 35, but at the end of the day you need to play 40 minutes to win in finals.”

SEABL - Round 18 SENDING the Brisbane Spartans back home with two losses, Dandenong set up its last homeand-away challenge before next week’s finals. Digging deep to roll over the northern visitors, Dandenong had to fight its way back and outscore Brisbane down the stretch - sealing the win with a 21-11 final term performance led by Daequon Montreal (25 points, 9 rebounds), Lucas Walker (9 points, 15 rebounds) and superb off-the-bench efforts from Matt Owies (12 points) and Dwayne Campbell (11 points). The women did it far more comfortably than the men, snaring a 72-50 victory on the back of starring efforts from Alison Downie (14 points, 8 rebounds), Clare Papavs (13 points, 8 rebounds) and Jacinta Kennedy (9 points, 10 rebounds). Both Dandenong teams faced Sandringham on Sunday afternoon after the Journal went to print.

Second-half blast from City By JARROD POTTER NPL 1 EAST THE Greater Dandenong showdown was once again claimed by Dandenong City, who whitewashed Springvale White Eagles in the second half to take a 3-0 triumph. City built its way into the clash - with a number of forward chances from Keegan Ziada and Ash Cattermole challenging the White Eagles but not breaching their defences. White Eagles subsequently barrelled through the City defenders and sent a few envoys itself towards goal, but nothing was gained through the first half as both sides walked back up the stairs in a stalemate. The scoring spree would begin in earnest mere seconds after the resumption - Ziada worked his magic to cross in the easiest of Cattermole (46’ and 65’) tap-ins before giving Cattermole his second of the afternoon 20 minutes later. A virtual carbon copy - Ziada’s cross to Cattermole’s eagerly awaiting boot - pushed the margin out beyond Springvale’s reckoning as Ziada (68’) added himself to the scoresheet to beat the stranded goalkeeper and finish off the match. NPL DANDENONG Thunder’s time in the top-flight is one round from ending after losing a relegation battle against North Geelong Warriors 0-3. The Thunder had its chances early as Jarrod Paterson and Brodie Paterson couldn’t capitalise on the chances afforded by strong footwork and speed. North Geelong’s Nikola Jurkovic (30’) headed in the first headache of the Thunder’s afternoon as the clash soon

went from bad to worse. From there Gareth Richards (53’ and 77’) immediately took the wind out of Dandenong’s second half sails to slot the second before hammering the final nail in the visitors’ NPL relegation coffin himself. The loss leaves the Thunder - the 2012 VPL treble-winning champions - three points below Round-25 winners Werribee City and North Geelong with one round remaining. It will be Dandenong Thunder’s NPL farewell match when it travels away to face Heidelberg United on Sunday 23 August.

Absolute Power rules absolutely By JASON ADAMS ABSOLUTE Power was absolutely brilliant on Thursday evening claiming his first city win. Absolute Power flew out of box eight and settled in prime position first time past the post. It wasn’t long before he put his rivals to the sword as he gained an eight-length break approaching the final bend before going on to win by six-and-one-quarter lengths in 34.23. The win was his sixth from just eight starts and partner of trainer Jason Thompson, Seona, was delighted with the run. “We were absolutely wrapped,” Thompson said. “I was a little concerned when he drew the pink as I didn’t know if he would be able to get across, but he was just brilliant. “He’s definitely learnt in his last two or three runs how to be a race dog.”

The aptly-named Absolute Power surged to victory on Picture: SUPPLIED Thursday evening. 143141 At not even two years of age, there’s no doubt that there’s plenty of improvement left in Absolute Power. “He’s definitely got improvement in him - he’s still a baby with more to learn. “He’s the ultimate professional, he’s a beautiful kennel dog, he doesn’t carry on and does everything right - he

doesn’t have any bad traits.” The run was his first over 595 metres though the rise in distance will be short lived, with the Thompson team intending to drop him back to 515 metres. “We’ll drop him back in distance… we won’t be rushing him into anything, he’ll go through the grades…” Thompson said.

Styling of the fourth generation Mazda MX-5 sports roadster takes a different direction to its predecessors. Also lower are the seats which may prove a disadvantage to some - as mentioned, Mazda Australia is chasing empty nesters as prime buyers. Being in that class I find it less than easy to get down onto the seats as the old bones are reluctant to cooperate. Once settled in, the seats are great, with good support for enthu-

siastic cornering. Cornering of the type that cries out to be explored and which is guaranteed to bring a smile to the faces of those who love their cars. The MX-5’s ride is impressively comfortably for a car with the sort of balance and superb road grip the MX-5 provides; well done the suspension and tyre engineers. Operation of the soft-top roof is

simplicity itself, undo a single catch in the windscreen header rail, fold the roof back and it clips down into the open position. You can do it in less than five seconds. Lovely! Engine performance from the 1.5 we tested is adequate but no more than that. At times we had to change down a couple of gears on hills that most other cars would have sailed up in top.

THE fourth generation Mazda MX-5 sports roadster takes a completely different direction to its predecessors. Mazda MX-5 is offered with two different engines. On-road charges have to be factored in, but being able to get into the driving seat of a Mazda MX-5 for under $35,000 is likely to have people rushing to showrooms. Available with the same engine / transmission combinations as the lower cost model, the GT gains 16-inch wheels, black door-mirror housings, a seven-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, internet radio, automatic lights and wipers, climate control on the air conditioning, keyless entry and start, together with a few other bits and pieces. The topline MX-5 GT with the 2.0-litre engine and automatic transmission is priced at $41,550; again on-road charges have to be added. The MX-5 now has a soft-top again, not a folding hardtop. Driving the all-new Mazda MX-5 is a sheer delight. The engine has been moved slightly backwards and the little roadster can be classed as mid-engined as its complete powerplant is within the wheelbase. It has also been lowered to bring the centre of gravity just that little bit closer to the ground.

Set to be seduced By DEREK OGDEN CITROEN has now given us an upgraded C4 hatchback. In two models, Seduction and Exclusive, the range features an all-new drivetrain, fresh styling and improved comfort and convenience over the previous model. It has a turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine delivering greater power and torque from the use of less fuel. Both models are paired exclusively to an all-new six-speed Aisin automatic gearbox. Compared to the previous 1.6-litre, four-cylinder, four-speed automatic petrol drivetrain, the new 1.2-litre C4 develops eight kilowatts more power (now 96 kW) and 70 Nm more torque (now 230 Nm), resulting in a 1.1 second swifter run to 100 kilometres an hour. Fuel use sees an improvement of 2.1 litres in fuel use over 100 kilometres (down to 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres). Styling has been brought up to date with new front and rear lighting, front bumpers and new colours. There are halogen headlights with LED signature, 3D effect taillights and chromed door mirror shells, Focus of the cabin interior is an all-new seven-inch tablet-style touch screen that gets rid of 13 buttons from the dash panel resulting in a cleaner, more intuitive set-up. The new touchscreen has allowed the take-up of satellite navigation as standard in both models. There’s also automatic lights and

The Citroen C4 Hatch is more than your average upgrade. wipers, dual zone climate control, cruise control with speed limiter, electro-chromatic rear view mirror, rear park assist and electric folding mirrors. On top of this, Exclusive variants gain blind-spot monitoring, keyless entry and start, Cielo panoramic glass roof, electric park brake, front parking sensors, in addition to those in the rear, and reversing camera. Priced at $29,990, plus in-road costs, added kit in the Seduction adds up to $5500 in value, which more than makes up for the price rise over the previous model ($23,990), while at $33,990, added value of $1500 gives the Exclusive a similar advantage over its predecessor. Options include metallic paint at $800, pearlescent paint $1000. Exclusive models can also be optioned with full leather, including front seat heating and massage function for $2500.

Boot volume is 408 litres. All is useable, it has low load entry and interior fittings, while 60/40 split fold seats and a ski flap allow long, cumbersome objects to be carried. Generous storage includes a large glove box, door panels in front large enough for a 1.5-litre bottle, drawers under the front seats, storage space on the dashboard and under the front armrest. The cabin has a premium feel with soft touch dashboard, quality cloth roof lining and touches of chrome on the steering wheel controls, air vents and gear lever. Seduction has the choice of a new upholstery finish, Rayados Mistral knit, while Exclusive receives a part leather, cloth and alcantara trim as standard. Exclusive also includes electric lumbar adjust and massage for the driver. The optional full leather trim

includes seat heating and massage for both front occupants. Flat yet comfortable seats, large windows, panoramic glazed roof (Exclusive only) measuring 1.3 square metres, and with an electric blind, produce light and airy surroundings. The all-new PureTech drivetrain has provided a weight saving of 125 kg over the discontinued Euro 5 diesel model. The resulting changes to spring and damper rates make for increased comfort. Based on the three-cylinder architecture of the naturally aspirated engines in the PureTech family, the turbocharged version in the C4 hatch operates smoothly. The PureTech 130 drivetrain is mated with a six-speed automatic. It features Quick Shift, a new technology for synchronised control of engine and gearbox. Safety items include electronic brake force distribution, emergency brake assist and traction control coupled with an electronic stability program.
